Royal Caribbean seeks volunteers for free cruise travel Royal Caribbean, one of the world's largest cruise lines, is looking for volunteers willing to travel for free on one of its impressive ships to test the new anticovid measures, while it is expected to resume business starting in 2021. They have already received more than 100,000 requests.

Currently, its cruise travel is suspended, but it is expected that they will be able to restart trips from next year. To be able to travel on many of Royal Caribbean’s routes, however, it will be necessary to pass the medical examination of the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the

body that is called upon to supervise anticovid security protocols in the US. These protocols will be very strict and it has been deemed necessary for the firm to test its own anticovid measures. For this reason, Royal Carribean has set to work to study the security measures and is planning an experimentation phase, which will be carried out with simulated cruises with volunteers on board, over 18 years old, who will participate in a series of ‘dry run’ exercises and tests. The company is therefore looking for volunteers to test all-expense-paid cruises. The Volunteers of the Seas campaign has already received more than 100,000 applications, revealed Royal Caribbean with no certainty yet about the dates on which these test cruises will take place. They will likely depart from Fort Lauderdale (Miami) between December and January, bound for CocoCay, the companyowned private island in the Bahamas.

Antigen test unreliable in asymptomatic patients A study carried out in Elche shows that the coronavirus antigen test is unreliable in asymptomatic patients. The study also claims that the test delivers a high percentage of false negatives, especially in patients who do not have symptoms or who have had symptoms for more than six days. The study was carried out with samples from more than a thousand patients who came to local health centres and those who were tested by the emergency services, suspected of having covid-19. "It is one of the most extensive studies that has been done, both in terms of the number of patients and the variety, since it has been applied to children and adult populations, as well as in different settings", explained Félix Gutiérrez, head of Internal Medicine of the General Hospital of Elche. With the samples of these patients, antigen and PCR tests were performed simultaneously, and the results were compared. "We found that there were very few false positives and where the antigen test

works especially well is when it comes to detecting patients with symptoms of less than six days of evolution," said Mar Masia, head of the Infectious Diseases unit of the Elche hospital. From the sixth day of symptoms, the accuracy of the antigen test is lower. The study also found significant differences based on the age of the patients. In patients between 0 and 14 years of age, the antigen tests yielded a higher percentage of false negatives. The researchers' hypothesis is simply "that, as the test is very annoying, the children withdraw immediately, which makes it difficult to take the sample," explained Félix Gutiérrez. Following the study, the researchers concluded that antigen testing would not be a valid test to apply to mass screening programmes. In terms of the results obtained for children and young people, Mar Masia insists on the need for schools to perform PCR tests on those children who have symptoms of the disease when the antigen test has come back negative.

The first case detected was among employees of the carehome, and was registered with health authorities on November 6th. sufficient. The Valencian Govenment reportedly decided to intervene at the residence once it confirmed the outbreak and above all due to the fact that the entire workforce was infected. Healthcare workers from the Torrevieja health area have been supporting the running of the nursing home since the authorities stepped in. No go on Orihuela budget The Popular Party has not been able to implement its 2020 budget plan after its governmental partner, Ciudadanos, voted against as did the opposition parties of PSOE, Cambiemos and Vox. Therefore, the only favourable votes for the budget came from the conservatives, and were not enough to get the budget agreed in the extraordinary plenary session that was held last week. The spokesman for Ciudadanos, José Aix, who has not ruled out supporting future budgets for 2021, detailed during the session the reasons why his group, which forms a government coalition with the Popular Party, decided to reject the budget for the current fiscal year. PSOE announced that they reached out to the PP and showed their intention to approve the accounts if their amendments had been included, but since they were not, they also voted against the budgets in the council

carry out support work during the health crisis and was seen carrying out a deep clean on the nursing home. The unit, based in Paterna (Valencia), was created in 2005 for defence "against threats of a Nuclear, Biological and Chemical nature." Around 25 soldiers in full protective gear arrived on Monday along with army vehicles and two support tents. Soldiers first undertook a perimeter closure and shut down all adjacent streets before moving inside the nursing home to begin the disinfection process.

meeting. Its spokesperson, Carolina Gracia, attacked Ciudadanos, for setting aside its partner in this matter, and announced that PSOE is still willing to reach out again to the PP so that it can take forward the budgets for 2021, "provided they focus on recovering people and the productive fabric." During the meeting, the Councillor for the Treasury, Rafael Almagro, announced that in February he will fully carry out the 2021 budgets to which the government team is already working and, knowing that those for 2020 would not be approved, defended his proposal in plenary session. Cambiemos said it voted against the 2020 budgets, as it considered them harmful to the municipality. According to the party spokesman, Carlos Bernabé, the accounts were "socially useless, environmentally irresponsible, without equality policies and with inflated spending on advertising, parties and on protocol."

Torrevieja’s salt workers are due to come off the ‘ERTE’ and start back to work. The harvesting of the salt is not directly impacted by the health crisis, but the salt mine has, since late 2016, been hit with large volumes of fresh water entering the salt lake system. The fresh water has significantly lowered the salt mine’s annual production output. Storm defences installed over recent years to protect urban areas from flooding meant more fresh water flowing into the lake and each deluge added to the last to cause an imbalance in the salinity of the water. Rain from the DANA in 2019 and Storm Gloria earlier this year added two metres of fresh water to the lake surface, which in turn delayed the salt crystallization process by more than two and a half months. The deeper water also meant that the harvesting equipment could not be used effectively. Now however, the ‘salineros’ can get back to work and harvest Torrevieja’s most famous export.

Alicante City Council in Guinness World Record bid The City of Alicante will pay 14,900 euros more for the giant "Sagrada Familia" Nativity Scene, an amount that is added to the 123,000 euros for the cost for the assembly of the monumental structures that will allow it to vie for a place in the Guinness Book of Records. The government

team said it considers it of interest because of the international acclaim that the distinction of the tallest Nativity scene in the world will have, which will be immediate once achieved. The artist who has built the three

sculptures of the "Sagrada Familia" Nativity, José Manuel García Esquiva "Pachi", recently carried out a second special transportation of the missing pieces to finish the image of Saint Joseph the Virgin and the baby Jesus, 18 meters high at the Plaza del Ayuntamiento.

Coronavirus Christmas measures The Health Department for the Valencian Community has announced the measures it wants to implement for social contact over the Christmas period. The region has taken its proposals to the working commission that is meeting at a national level to try to agree on a common measure among all the autonomous communities for the Christmas holidays. These must be approved by the Inter-territorial Council. The recommendations are that members of the same family meeting at a private home will be allowed a gathering of ten family members. However, social gatherings in private homes or in restaurants will be limited to six people. This measure will apply on 24th, 25th and 31st December and 1st, 5th and 6th January. On these days the curfew will be relaxed until 1am but only on those specific six days. The measures were announced by the Minister of Health, Ana Barceló, who also indicated that the perimeter closure of the Valencian Community could be maintained until January, with the exception of the six indicated days, when it will be possible to freely enter and leave the Valencian Community. The Minister pointed out that the decision to extend or not the perimeter closure will be the decision of the President of the Generalitat, Ximo Puig, who will decide whether to maintain it or lift it by 9th December.

The Health Minister said that the desirable outcome is that there is a common agreement so that each autonomous community does not opt for a different criterion when celebrating the holiday. However, if there is no agreement the region will request to apply these measures. There should be no legal issues because they

do not affect any fundamental right other than those that are currently limited under the protection of the state of alarm decree, which is valid until April. The councillor discussed the possibility that the restrictions on the capacity in shops and hotels could be relaxed leading up to Christmas, but will depend on the evolution of the pandemic. "We are in favour of keeping the measures in force until a week before the start of the festivities and depending on the case numbers, they will be a eased or tightened." The 9th December is the date on which the restrictions in force end and before that day the measures will be reviewed based on the epidemiological situation. She warned that in order for them to be eased, the Community should be "very well, very well, very well, but it does not seem that this is going to be the case given the data”. The reason for limiting the maximum number of people who can meet at parties or gatherings to 6 or 10, is the high number of outbreaks that have their origin in family and friends gatherings – which stands at 92 percent of the total of the social outbreaks. For Ana Barceló «there is something priority, fundamental: that alarming 92% must go down. The Health Minister said: “Only the responsibility of each Valencian, today more than ever, can open the door to a more endearing Christmas”. Regarding the evolution of the pandemic in the Valencian Community, at the moment, the cumulative incidence is 281.55 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to the national average of 340.83 and the reproduction index is 0.89, "which means that, by falling below 1, we are no longer transmitting." However, the councillor remembers what happened as a result of the October 12 bridge holiday, "when we were doing very well and suddenly there was an exponential rise that we did not expect." The occupancy of covid patients in the hospital wards of the Valencian Community is 13.25 percent and in terms of the Intensive Care Units its 31.5 percent.

Cultural Centre promised for Orihuela Costa The latest Plenary Meeting of Orihuela Town Council resulted in a major boost for Orihuela Costa, with a firm promise that the Coast would at last have a Cultural Centre with an auditorium of its own, as befitting for a resident community of one third of the population of the municipality. It was at this meeting that C.L.A.R.O. requested a commitment to provide Orihuela Costa with a Cultural Centre with a library, rooms for cultural and social activities and an auditorium suitable for a population of between 30,000-50,000 people, depending on the time of the year. Only then, argued C.L.A.R.O., could the coast benefit from the annual cultural budget of some 2 million euros. Since there is no suitable indoor facility in Orihuela Costa for cultural and social activities of any significance, what is provided from the annual culture budget are open air activities which cannot take place in the winter months and, even in the summer, are subject to the vagaries of the weather. Otherwise social and cultural activities in Orihuela Costa take place on private premises, mainly in bars and restaurants, for which participants must pay out of their own pockets. The City of Orihuela, on the other hand, with a population similar to that of the coast, has several municipal venues for social and cultural activities and even the smaller inland villages with populations of a few thousand at most have such facilities. In the plenary meeting the Mayor

Proposed location of promised Orihuela Costa social-cultural centre on municipal land adjacent to La Zenia Boulevard

acknowledged that it was justified that the coast should have culture facilities and that they were working on solutions. C.L.A.R.O. has been campaigning for such facilities for a decade or more. In 2017 there was provision in the budget for drawing up a project but it was not taken further and nothing has been done since. Now it is promised that a project will be ready by the end of the year. Fortunately, the location of such a centre should not constitute a problem. C.L.A.R.O. believes that the obvious location is on the municipally owned land adjacent to Zenia Boulevard shopping centre which is used at present as a supplementary car park without any form of agreement with the Town Hall and

without any payment to the public coffers on the part of the owners of the Boulevard. In effect, says C.L.A.R.O., the taxpayers of the coast are subsidising car parking for a hugely successful private, commercial enterprise. Providing the money for the centre will be the next step after finalisation of a hopefully ambitious plan based on detailed suggestions already advanced by residents in meetings with the relevant councillor. Choice of the municipal land adjacent to Zenia Boulevard for the location will enable considerable cost savings since the land is already levelled, laid with tarmac, has drainage, is illuminated and all the access roads are in place.

3 THINGS THAT COULD RUIN YOUR SALE Rebecca Serwotka Rebecca Serwotka - Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward - 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today!Featured on Best Buy Spain - Property TV.

You’ve sold! You’ve found yourself a buyer… Hooray! You’ve agreed a move out date and you’re well on your way to completion. Everything is going according to plan. It’s easy to get complacent with how well your sale is progressing, but sometimes there are little hiccups along the way. Take notice of these 3 things that could jeopardize your sale: 1. HAVING NO FLEXIBILITY - With the current pandemic buyers have valid reasons for why they need you as a seller, to be flexible. Travel restrictions for one, could mean they aren’t able to make the agreed date for completion, and may need to delay by a few days or even a few weeks. If you’re being awkward and won’t accept a delay, you may lose your buyer completely. Do you really want to go through this whole process again and try to find another buyer? I think not. We all need to be a little flexible right now. So take a deep breath and have some patience. Both you and your buyer want the transaction to take place, so work through it together. It’ll be worth the wait!

2. REMOVING MORE ITEMS THAN WHAT WAS ON THE INVENTORY - Your buyer will be inspecting the property before heading to the Notary to complete the purchase/sale. They’ll be checking you’ve left all items that you agreed to include in the deal. If you think they won’t notice, they will! All homes have been photographed and videoed. Buyers have been watching those videos over and over again and have probably memorized every item in the house! Don’t be tempted to take more than you agreed to, or you’ll run the risk of money being held back by the buyers Lawyer to pay for a replacement! 3. NOT HAVING YOUR PAPERWORK IN ORDER This is the number one reason why sales fall apart. It is always advisable to seek guidance from a professional before offering your property for sale. Check up front what paperwork you’ll be required to supply to be able to complete your sale without any delays. Five arrested for kidnapping man to force his brother to cut cocaine In scenes reminiscent of the hit TV series Breaking Bad, it has emerged that a drug trafficking gang based out of Alicante and Murica kidnapped a man in order to force his brother to cut drugs for them. The now disbanded criminal organization operated in the provinces of Alicante and Murcia and, allegedly, was engaged in the trafficking of cocaine, hashish and anabolics for sale and distribution in Spain and Sweden. National Police made five arrests during the investigation which was following the movements of a gang allegedly involved in arms and drug trafficking as well as the sale of encrypted mobile phone terminals. Those arrested, one Spaniard and four Swedes between the ages of 29 and 44, even kidnapped the brother of a specialist drug ‘chemist’ to force him to "cook" and cut cocaine in order that the gang would make more profit. The investigation, which began in July 2019 by the National Police, involved the collaboration of the Swedish Police. The operation began when officers in Spain learned that the head of a Swedish criminal gang – arrested in Torrevieja in 2012 – was back in the drug trafficking business. At the time of his

arrest eight years ago, the then 30 year old was one of the 30 most wanted fugitives by INTERPOL and had been in hiding in the Alicante area since 2005. Spanish police heard the man was back in business and suspected he might have been trafficking cocaine, hash and anabolics in Spain and Sweden. Furthermore, this time his gang had also added arms trafficking to its repertoire.

The operation came to a climax last week when the Spanish drug squad, alongside Swedish Police, carried out a series of raids and arrested five gang members. Officers seized half a kilo of cocaine, 200 grams of hashish, 32 cans and 200 pills of anabolics, a semiautomatic shotgun, two pistols, a silencer, 140 cartridges, 8 encrypted telephones and 100 mobile cards for the use of these phones. The agents also found several weapons hidden in a vehicle that the gang appeared to use solely for storage.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP After a roaring start to the week, sterling settled for millimetre gains against the major currencies. GBP lost out to the Northern Scandinavian crowns, as well as the antipodean dollars, however it climbed 0.7% and 0.9% against the safe-haven USD and JPY, respectively. The performance owed to better-than-expected economic data, including lower public sector borrowing than investors had feared. In addition, retail sales improved by more than forecast, while there was a mixed bag from the provisional purchasing managers’ indices, reflecting a weakness in services but a boost in manufacturing from pre-Brexit stock-building. This week saw the Chancellor of the Exchequer reveal his Spending Review, which was mostly as investors had been led to expect. No surprises were in store, which helped the pound climb higher immediately after the speech. Investors are anticipating it taking at least two years for the UK economy to return to pre-Covid levels. The countdown is continuing to the end of the Brexit transition period, with a deal still yet to be announced, however positive sentiment from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyenreporting "we have seen...better process”, helped to raise optimism within the markets.

EURO It was a quiet week for the euro in terms of economic data, and what did come to light revealed the lingering sense of pessimism from consumers, businesses and investors. Even the euro picked up on this vibe, losing an average of 0.2% to the other major currencies, only profiting from the even sorrier USD, by two fifths of a cent. The only real significant revelation emerged from Germany, and even that was two months out of date. While more recent, provisional purchasing managers indices were less upbeat. The pan-Eurozone reading was five points lower on the month at 45.1, with the Markit’s Chief Economist commenting that “the Eurozone economy has plunged back into a severe decline in November amid renewed efforts to quash the rising tide of COVID-19 infections. The data add to the likelihood that the euro area will see GDP contract again in the fourth quarter.” This pessimism was also reflected in the EC’s index of consumer confidence, resulting in a two point fall to -17.6 (a six-month low). Businesses also retained a gloomy outlook, with German business sentiment reducing by two points to 90.7 (a four-month low).

Gender violence statistics To coincide with the recent Day Against Domestic Violence, Councillor for Equality, Almudena Baldó, reported the statistics from the Municipal Service for Attention to Gender Violence (SEMAVIG) for 2020. This year a total of 79 women have been attended, of which 8 have required just information and specific advice, while 71 have used the service in a broader way, such as psychological support, social services, referrals to other services. This data shows a decrease in the number using the service in comparison to the previous year. However, the Councillor explained: “Given the months of confinement, despite the fact that there have been fewer complaints and assistances, does not mean that there has been no violence, in fact the number of calls to the dedicated support telephone line 016 have increased during this specific period.” The Councillor broke down the specific data, highlighting that the age range of the users is the highest between people aged between 31 and 40, with 28.9 percent. "This year no women under 18 have been treated, which does not imply that there have been no cases, but rather

Two thousand euros found in an envelope handed in At a time when it’s good just to come across any news that’s not covid-related, a local story from Almoradi has restored faith in humanity and highlights the kindness that exists in our local communities. This was, on the face of it, a heard-before tale where someone loses money and someone finds it and returns it. Nothing extraordinary; no heroes or lives saved. However, given the hard and uncertain times we all find ourselves in at the moment it would have been very easy to keep the money and it’s hard not to read the story and wonder what you would have done it that situation. The story unfolded on Friday 13th but ended with lots of good luck for one local resident. In Almoradí, the intersection of Tomás Capdepón with Avenida de España is at the heart of the a financial centre of the city. On any day the area is busy with people carrying out errands at the Town Hall, the banks or generally shopping – so anyone could have found the lost envelope. However, it was one honest and kindhearted resident that noticed an envelope in the road, whilst using the pedestrian crossing. She

actually nearly missed at as it blended with the white paint. Peering inside, the lady could see there were lots of bank notes inside. Being close to Plaza de la Constitución, she thought it best to go to the Almoradí Town Hall and report the find. Meanwhile, at the same time as the police were alerted, another resident of Almoradí was frantically searching for the envelope containing €2,000 that it appeared he had lost. The man had been to the bank to withdraw the money to pay his bills. This was a lot of money for the man and was all he had to pay his debts. He was distraught at the thought of losing the cash and knew he must have dropped it in the street. The man was certain he would never see the money again.

However, luckily after just halfan-hour the police had found him. Police were happy given the man’s account that he was the rightful owner and checked the withdrawal with the relevant bank. Suffice to say the man was delighted, and according to the police was ‘crazy with happiness’ and had not only his money restored but his faith in humanity. Explaining the happy ending of this event, Almoradi Chief of Police highlighted the honesty of the action of the lady who gave the envelope with the money to whoever could best find its owner, and pointed out that returning what one finds (especially if what you find is money) remains an exceptional action which shows the true character of the person.

This Week´s Movie Picks Christmas with the Kranks

The Secret Life of Pets

Sunday 6th December – Channel 5, 6.00 pm

Saturday 5th December – ITV2, 5.50 pm

As strange as it may sound, Luther and Nora Krank, the award winning couple for their cheerful Christmas spirit, have decided for the first time, to skip this year's annual festivities when their daughter, Blair, departs for Peru after joining the Peace Corps. With the intention to save the staggering amount of $6,000 plus spent on previous year's holiday season, they are determined to invest the money on a sun-drenched, 10-day Caribbean cruise, much to their friends and neighbors' chagrin. However, that is easier said than done, and before long, menacing phone calls and angry protests on the snow covered pavements will betray that there is definitely no easy way out for Luther and Nora who has turned their backs on Christmas. And then, unexpectedly, Blair and her new fiance, Enrique, are coming home, unbeknownst to them that the empty family nest is far from ready for the event. Can Luther and Nora "generate" Christmas out of nothing in less than a few hours?

In a Manhattan apartment building, Max's life as a favorite pet is turned upside-down, when his owner brings home sloppy mongrel Duke. They must put their quarrels aside when they learn that adorable white bunny Snowball is building an army of lost pets determined to wreak revenge.

Shop Local

CostaBlancaPeople 1st - 7th December 2020

SHOP LOCAL • When you shop local, you create job stability for current working citizens in your community, as well as opening the door for more local hiring opportunities.

In early September the Costa Blanca People was the first English language newspaper in Spain to launch a ‘Shop Local’ campaign, in an effort to empower local businesses, and encourage locals to buy, eat and enjoy locally rather than online. We believe that we as a community can come together, even in some small way, to make a difference to the local economy by fuelling local support. In terms of the campaign itself, we do not charge businesses to participate as it is open to everyone, whether or not you advertise with us. Supporting the local small business economy is never more important than at Christmas time when many small retailers rely on festive revenue to establish themselves for the year to come. According to studies, when you shop local, approximately 48% of the cost of your purchase is recirculated back into the local economy. When you shop at a chain store, that number drops to only 14%. Instead of taking your hard-earned cash to a multi million euro chain store, think about how beneficial it would be to invest your Christmas spending money in your local economy and help support a small business owner's family. There’s no denying that summer has been difficult for small business owners – while many were still reeling from lockdown, further restrictions made doing business harder than ever. However, it is our hope that together, the local community can help sustain the local economy through the Christmas season. If you’re not already convinced, here are a few of our favourite reasons to shop local this Christmas....

• Good customer service can be hard to find (especially at large chain stores where often employees are more interested in talking to each other or on the phone than ringing up your purchases or helping you find what you need). Some of the biggest perks of shopping local are the personalized customer service and the unique, hand-crafted items you come across. Small business owners don't build their own business from scratch just for kicks - they do it because they are passionate about keeping their products and services in their community. • When you order from a small local business, somebody somewhere does a little happy dance (...ok so we saw that one on Facebook, but you get the idea – you’re directly impacting someone’s happiness). • You’re more likely to find unique, personalised Christmas gifts from local independent shops. • Almost half of small business owners say that if everyone in their local community just spent €6 (£5) extra per week with small businesses it would help to keep them open in the long term, according to The Independent. We know that with social distancing restrictions still in place, online shopping will continue to be a major trend in the retail sector throughout the Christmas season, but consumers themselves are starting to indicate a desire to shop locally both online and in-store. In fact, 21% of UK shoppers think it is unlikely they will venture onto the high street for gift shopping this year and 32% prefer to shop in local stores to avoid large crowds. Marketplaces like Amazon and eBay continue to be very relevant for consumers, particularly in the run up to Christmas as they search for gift ideas. According to advertising agency Rakuten, 48% of UK shoppers are now using online marketplaces as the primary source of inspiration during peak shopping, while 46% take into account referrals from friends and family.

Tips for successful Local Christmas Shopping ASK FOR RECOMMENDATIONS: The majority of towns and villages have community pages set up on Facebook. Asking about small businesses, gift recommendations or where to shop on your local Facebook page means you’ll have a ton of hot tips on where to shop in your local area. VISIT A VIRUTAL CHRISTMAS FAIR: Many of the traditional Christmas Fairs in the UK and Ireland have moved online this year. Give your area a google and see if there are any virtual fairs set up. And, if there aren’t any, why not consider setting one up yourself? It’s a great way to support local businesses and small local shops – as well as a great way to rally some community spirit, too. SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL BUTCHER: Support your local butcher or delicatessen. When it comes to sourcing your traditional roast dinner, it’s all too easy to head to one of the big supermarkets. Don’t forget about local independent butchers and delis: from fresh fruit and vegetables, to delicious cakes and pastries, to the roast turkey or ham itself, many allow you to place orders well in advance – and there are usually plenty of bargains to be found, too. A quick look around our local Facebook groups here on the Southern Costa Blanca has revealed that many small butchers are putting together Christmas Packs so you’ll get a great bargain too! ASK FOR A VOUCHER: If you can’t find the perfect gift, why not consider asking your small local business to make a voucher for you to give

as a gift. This way, you can give the gift of a beautiful blowdry, a manicure or massage, clothing, a facial treatment...the possibilities are endless. If it’s somewhere you usually shop, why not ask if they offer gift vouchers. It’s a one-size-fits-all gift! How can local businesses get involved? Display a Shop Local Christmas poster to promote your local business and neighbourhood so residents invest in the local economy by shopping locally. Collect a free poster from our office or, email us and we will send you a copy to print for yourself. Alternatively, go to our website to download a free copy. Use our Shop Local Shop on your website, email signature and social media to promote the campaign. Feel free to copy the logo from our website or social media, or email us and we will send you a copy. Buy locally from other businesses when purchasing goods and services for your business. Let your customers know you are open along with promoting business offers, discounts and opening hours.

Will the campaign make a difference? We certainly hope so! Sometimes, all it takes is a reminder to make buyers pause to think twice about whether to buy online or locally. If we can all get on board, and become our own advocates - ambassadors for the local economy if you like – together, we can keep our local economy, and all of our livelihoods, afloat. Don’t forget, if you have an offer or special deal to entice new business, let us help you shout about it! Tag us in your social media posts promoting your deals or offers and we’d love to share them to our followers! Advocates We are looking for advocates for our Shop Local campaign. To get involved, all you need to do is display the campaign poster in your business and social media. Use the hashtag #CBPShopLocal and tag us in your posts so we can share your business with our followers – this applies to all local businesses, not just those who currently advertise with us. Together, we can ensure that our local economy not only survives this Christmas, but thrives.

Bake Off winner smuggles trophy home The Great British Bake Off came to an end with Peter Sawkins being crowned the series' very deserving winner. At just 20 years old, Edinburgh-born Peter has the distinction of being the youngest-ever winner in the show's 10-year history. But now that the episode has aired on Channel 4, Peter can finally share his good news with everyone – a welcome relief after the student had to keep his big secret for months, something that caused him a lot of stress when he travelled back home following the competition and had to somehow keep the Bake Off cake stand trophy hidden. "After winning the trophy I had to smuggle it on the plane back to Edinburgh," Peter said. "I was a bit stressed when we went through the scanners. And then it stayed on my family worktop in the kitchen hidden in a box. I can't wait to crack it out of the box and give it as much use as I possibly can." This year's Bake Off was certainly the most unique, with the show having to be filmed in a bubble due to coronavirus restrictions. Speaking about the odd filming circumstances, Peter said: "Filming in the bubble was certainly a unique experience inside and outside the tent. It was a very intense environment to be

Science says a glass of red wine can replace 1 hour exercising Are you a red wine drinker? What if we tell you sipping in a glass of wine can equate to an hour of exercise? Well it can and it’s tried and tested. A new scientific study has just confirmed this wonderful news. So next time you hold a glass of Merlot, you can brag about one hour of hard slog in the gym. What the study found out “I think resveratrol could help patient populations who want to exercise but are physically incapable. Resveratrol could mimic exercise for the more improve the benefits of the modest amount of exercise that they can do.” I’m not saying this, but the study’s principal investigator Jason Dyck who got it published in the Journal of Physiology in May. In a statement, Dyck pointed out that resveratrol is your magic “natural compound” which lavishes you with the same benefits as you would earn from working out in the gym. And where do you find it? Fruits, nuts and of course, red wine! Did I forget to mention Dyck also researched resveratrol can “enhance exercise training and performance”? There are limits, of course But, all is not gold as they say. If you’re a lady who likes to sip a glass of cold white wine in the heat of those balmy Spanish summers or are simply a roselover, there’s bad news. The “one hour workout” formula only works with red wine, not non red wines. And don’t be

mistaken and think you’ve managed 4 to 6 hours of workout sessions if you happen to gulp down a whole bottle of red wine, because that doesn’t work either. And, of course there are so any benefits to exercise what can replace the golden lifetime benefits of keeping fiy? Exercise is so important as you age. But let’s look at the bigger picture here. A glass of red wine is nothing to feel guilty about and in fact is good for you. As we all know red wine is a healthier choice when boozing. Red wine is the most calorie friendly alcoholic beverage. You won’t mind adding up to a mere 100 calories per 5-ounce glass of red wine after you realise it contains antioxidants, lowers risk of heart disease and stroke, reduces risk of diabetes-related diseases, helps avoid formation of blood clots and

lowers bad cholesterol level. Want more goof facts....Wine could also replace your mouthwash because the flavan-3-ols in red wines can control the “bad bacteria” in your mouth. To add to that list of benefits, moderate wine drinking may be beneficial for your eyes too – a recent study mentions. By the way, when chocolate is paired with wine, particularly red, they can bring you some exceptional benefits towards your health. All of which is enough not to discard the vino tinto from your “right eating” regimen just because it stains your teeth blue. Of course, having mentioned all the ‘goods’ about red wine, you cannot underplay the fact that it is still an alcohol, which isn’t the best stuff to pour into your body. Please remember all alcohol should be taken in moderation.

in but it was hugely fun whilst filming and also in our down time. "You saw Paul on his moped, the crew doing Yoga or playing rounders or tennis. It was like a grown ups holiday camp for seven weeks." Peter was crowned Bake Off's 2020 winner after beating Laura Adlington and Dave Friday in what judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith described as the "closest" final they've ever judged.

For his final three challenges, Peter had to make custard slices, walnut whirls, and a Showstopper dessert tower that reflected his Bake Off experience. After winning the series, Peter said: "I wanted this a lot. When I was 12, I was watching repeats of Bake Off back to back, and it got me into baking big time. "I am a Bake Off nerd, and I think 12-year-old Peter would be in awe, and just the most excited giddy kid. I am that excited giddy kid right now."

Free chocolate with Cadbury’s Secret Santa Cadbury’s Secret Santa campaign is back for 2020, but things are going to be a little different this Christmas. The Secret Santa scheme gives people the chance to send loved ones a free bar of Cadbury chocolate – secretly, of course. Last year, Cadbury set up special purple letterboxes, where you could send your bar to a loved one. But - as with all things - things will be done slightly differently this Christmas. You now simply have to visit Cadbury's virtual postal service online to send a bar of Cadbury Dairy Milk to a friend or loved one in the post anonymously, free of charge. Which is even better for those of us living here in Spain....but it doesn’t end there. New for 2020, Cadbury has partnered with the Trussell Trust, a charity which supports a network of food banks in the UK, to help bring a little bit of extra Christmas magic for people who need to use food banks at this time of year. When Secret Santas send chocolate through the Postal Service to a friend or family

member, Cadbury will also donate a second bar on your behalf, free of charge, to someone who needs to use a food bank in the Trussell Trust network. Paola Cassinelli, Senior Brand Manager for Cadbury Christmas says, “We can’t wait to bring our Secret Santa campaign online and give everyone the chance to send chocolate secretly to someone they love. It’s been a particularly tough year for many which is why we felt it was more important than ever to bring back our activation and let people secretly give to both to those they know and love, and to those who might really appreciate a small treat this Christmas. We’ve partnered with the Trussell Trust and for every free Secret Santa sent Cadbury are donating a bar to a food bank in the Trussell Trust’s network. We want to help bring that little bit of extra Christmas magic to a family or household who might really need it.” The Secret Santa Postal Service will be running online between 2nd – 13th December.

Portion control tips To lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you eat, which means being aware of your portion sizes. But you're not necessarily doomed to a growling stomach. You don't want to feel like you're on a diet, but you have to eat fewer calories. Start you meal with water Drink 16 ounces (a big glass) of water before you eat. Filling your belly with water will naturally make you less likely to overeat, she says. Plus, some symptoms of dehydration may actually be what's causing your rumbling belly, so sipping some water before you eat may eliminate your "hunger" altogether. Wear fitted clothes We're not suggesting you squeeze into trousers that are too tight. However, wearing an outfit with a waistband or perhaps a jacket with buttons can serve as a tool to prompt you to slow down and assess how you feel during your meal. As your clothing begins to feel a little snugger, it may keep you from going back for seconds. Fill up on veggies Bulking up your meals with veggies is one easy way to cut calories while filling you up fast. Spinach, for example, can be used as a sandwich-topper or can add fibre and nutrients to pasta and stir-fries. Other ideas to eat more veggies: swap in mushrooms for half the ground meat in most recipes, make oatmeal more filling

with diced apples, and use a wholewheat pita in place of bread so you can stuff it with more veggies. Try portion control dinnerware The colour of your plate may influence how much you eat, according to a 2018 study in Nutrition Journal. The study conclusions suggest that if you want to eat less, select plates that have a colourcontrast to the food you're eating for dinner, like pasta with red sauce on a white plate. Or if you want to eat more healthy foods, like a bigger salad, eat greens from a large green plate or bowl. Set the scene Dim lights and listen to relaxing music to set the tone for a more leisurely meal. Taking your time while eating increases enjoyment and decreases portions. Remember to chew slowly, put down your fork between bites, and sip water to make your meal last longer. Slow down Here's another way to slow down your eating: munch on foods that require shelling, peeling, or individual unwrapping. Oranges, edamame, and pistachios in their shells are healthy options. Plate up When you sit down with a bag of chips, do you really know how many you're eating? Researchers from Cornell University sought to answer this

question in a study and found that people ate 50 percent more chips when they were given no visual cues as to how large a portion should be. So if you buy a bag of pretzels or tin of nuts that contains 10 servings, divide the contents of the container into 10 smaller bags ahead of time. Sup some soup Before you dive into your starter, have some soup. Though it may seem counterintuitive to add more to your meal, research shows that starting a meal with soup may help you reduce your overall calorie intake. In a study from Penn State University, people who ate soup before their lunch entrĂŠe reduced their total calorie intake by 20 percent. Your best bet: a broth-based soup, preferably with veggies to help you feel full from the natural fibre. Here

are a few healthy soup recipes to get you started. Drink from a tall glass It's okay to have a cocktail with your meal if that's what you really want, but keep it to one glass and enjoy it slowly. To trick yourself into believing you're having more, pour your drink into a tall, thin glass. A study published in the journal BMJ revealed that practiced bartenders who poured what they thought was a shot of alcohol (1.5 ounces) into a short, wide glass poured

20 percent more than when the glass was tall and thin. Add extra ice to your drink to make it look like even more. End your meal with a different sweet treat Many people have trained themselves to expect a sweet treat at the end of a meal. Swap in a new, healthier ritual after meals to signal that you're done eating. Try brewing a flavourful decaf tea like peppermint, cinnamon, chocolate, or one of your favourite fruity varieties for low-or-no-calorie sweet-tooth satisfier.

Sweet memories Remember saving up your pocket money to spend on sweets after school? Some of our strongest childhood memories are attached to the chocolates and candies we fell in love with growing up. From Milky Way and Opal Fruits to Pop Rocks, here are the sweetest treats of our youth. Marathon Everyone’s favourite nougat, peanut and caramel chocolate bar was first invented in the US in the 1930s, sold under the brand name Marathon. The packaging was exactly as it is today except for the name. In 1990 it was changed to Snickers and it’s one

of the most popular chocolate bars in the world. Kit Kat Today Kit Kats, the chocolate and wafer bars, are a tasty treat in their own right but when they were first introduced in the UK in 1937 it was to replace the muchloved Chocolate Crisp. It could no longer be produced in wartime due to milk shortages, so the Kit Kat was made instead and had blue packaging. Following the war, it returned to the original milk-based recipe and red packaging, but the new name stayed.

M&Ms The man behind the Mars empire was inspired to invent M&M's to solve the problem of chocolate sales falling in summer – bars of chocolate would quickly melt on hot days. He created candy-coated M&M's and supplied the mini sweet treats exclusively to US soldiers during the Second World War. Following the war, M&M's also became available to the public and soon everyone was hooked. Milky Way “More malted milk content than a soda fountain double malted milk!” was the selling point of the first Milky Way bars, launched by Mars in 1923. They were huge in size, weighing

85g (3oz) in comparison to today’s 51g (1.8oz). By 1935, the confection had made its way to the UK without the caramel. These days the Milky Way generates more than £81.7 million in annual sales. Nestle Crunch This flat milk chocolate bar filled with crisped rice was first introduced by Nestlé in 1928. The tagline was “More fun to munch!” Crunch bars came to the UK in 1965 and they're still on sale today. Twix Twix was originally launched in 1967 in the UK and didn’t make it to American shores until

1979. The twin biscuits (hence the name Twix) with soft caramel and chocolate have done remarkably well ever since with the launch of variations such as Twix ice cream, mini Twix bites and even Twix spread. Opal Fruits When Starburst first launched in the UK in 1960, the chewy sweets were called Opal Fruits and the four original flavours were strawberry, lemon, orange and lime. Only when it crossed the Atlantic in 1967 it was renamed Starburst and in 1998 the name caught on in the UK too. Its flavours now include cherry, sour green apple and mango melon, plus there's a new product for 2020 – chewy sticks called Swirlers.

Skittles These colourful candies first appeared in the UK in 1963 and in the US in 1974. Made in shades of green, purple, red, yellow and orange, Skittles' tagline was “Taste the Rainbow”, one of the longest running advertising campaigns in history. However, it has been recently revealed Skittles all taste the same. Chupa Chups Surprising to most people, this iconic candy brand was founded in Spain in 1958 when inventor Enric Bernat started producing the lollipops and their striped packaging. The original flavours were strawberry, orange, lemon, strawberry and cream, chocolate and vanilla, coffee and cream, and mint. By the 1990s they had grown close to world domination, on sale in 164 countries.

Are vegans really any healthier than carnivores For some it’s a lifestyle choice, for others an ethical one. But for whichever reason, the number of people who choose to be vegan has quadrupled in five years. There are some 600,000 vegans compared with 150,000 in 2014 according to The Vegan Society. But is this way of eating (in which you avoid all animal products including meat, fish, eggs, honey and dairy) actually good for you? The question was brought into sharp focus this week with news that a vegan diet may increase the risk of broken bones. Researchers from Oxford and Bristol universities tracked 65,000 people aged over 17 and found vegans were more than twice as likely to break a hip than meateaters. Overall, vegans were 43 per cent more likely to suffer a

bone fracture - which the researchers believe was because the vegans consumed less calcium, a mineral that helps build bone and protein. Dr Tammy Tong, one of the study team, says these findings highlight the risks of cutting all animal-based products from your diet. ‘Unless they are actively supplementing or opting for fortified foods, it can be difficult for vegans to achieve a sufficient intake of calcium just from their diet,’ she tells Good Health. So can a vegan diet be healthier than a meat-based one? Or are vegans putting their longterm health at risk by cutting out certain dairy-based food groups? The fact is that the evidence for and against veganism is varied. In October 2019, for example,

there were claims a vegan diet can improve a man’s virility (based on a study of just three people, in a Netflix documentary). A more scientific study, published in September 2019 in the BMJ, found that meatfree meals could raise the risk of stroke by 20 percent. The researchers suggested lower levels of vitamin B12 (found in meat, fish and eggs) could play a role. ‘We tend to confuse ethical choices with healthy choices when we make up our minds about good diets,’ says Rick Miller, an independent dietician at King Edward VII’s Hospital, in London. ‘The best diet is that which meets the needs of our biochemistry without lacking something essential.’

The Spanish executive has secured enough support to get its 2021 budget plan approved in Congress, bringing added stability to the minority centreleft government of the Socialist Party (PSOE) and Unidas Podemos. Spain has been functioning since 2018 with a budget that was approved by the previous Popular Party (PP) administration. The country held a snap election in April of last year after parliament voted down an earlier draft, and this was followed by another early election in November. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez of the PSOE is hoping that this new budget deal will see him through the remainder of the political term. Support is being provided by three regional parties that also backed Sánchez’s return to the prime minister’s office in January of this year. The executive said it has reached a “preliminary deal” with the Catalan Republican Left (ERC), and ensured backing from the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) and Bildu, a far-left Basque party. Together with the governing coalition partners, they represent 179 seats, three more than required for an

absolute majority. But Ciudadanos (Citizens), a national centre-right party that had initially offered support, said that it cannot join a pact with ERC, which played a key role in the Catalan government’s 2017 attempt to unilaterally secede from Spain, or with Bildu, whose leader Arnaldo Otegi was once a spokesperson for the political wing of the now-defunct terrorist group ETA. Sources at ERC who were present at the negotiations said that they accelerated their own talks with the government and with the two Basque parties in a bid to “keep Ciudadanos out of the equation.” The parliamentary spokesperson for ERC, Gabriel Rufián, said that his party has reached a preliminary agreement with the executive, although the deal still needs to be ratified by the senior leadership of the Catalan party. Under the draft plan, the Catalan government will have “all its powers restored to manage its expenses,” according to ERC. The Catalan government feels that its financial independence was curtailed in 2015 when the central executive, then under

Rajoy of the PP, introduced spending controls to prevent regional officials from using the funds towards independence goals. These controls were introduced before the application of Article 155 of the Spanish Constitution following the illegal referendum of October 2017. Some of those restrictions were lifted by the PSOE government two years ago. The current budget was passed in June 2018, just a few days before a no-confidence vote led by Pedro Sánchez ousted former prime minister Mariano Rajoy from office. Since then, a highly fragmented parliament has failed to agree on a new spending plan. Nearly two years ago, a draft budget put forward by the PSOE and Podemos was rejected by right-of-centre parties and by Catalan nationalists, leading to early elections in April that were won by the PSOE. But Sánchez’s inability to form a government led to another general election in November, which the PSOE won again but by a smaller margin, leading to the formation of Spain’s first coalition government in recent democratic history.

Exceed exercise recommendations to offset prolonged sitting People who sit for prolonged periods should exceed exercise recommendations, according to guidelines from the World Health Organisation (WHO). Experts have long warned those who are sedentary for much of the day could face an early death, with some even claiming “sitting is the new smoking”. The WHO has therefore recommended people take part in 150 to 300 minutes of moderate intensity exercise – like brisk walking, dancing or even raking leaves – a week. Alternatively, those who are more time-pressed could do at least 75 to 100 minutes of vigorous exercise – such as jogging, cycling or carrying heavy objects – every seven days. The guidelines coincide with a study of more than 44,000 people, which revealed those who sat for 10 or more hours a day – like office workers or lorry drivers – were at a greater risk of a premature death. The scientists behind the research added, however, finding the time for 30 to 40 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise a day “substantially weakens this risk”, bringing it in line with people who spend very little time sat down.

The WHO has stressed any activity is better than none, urging people to take the stairs over the lift, walk around the block and get stuck into household chores. “These guidelines are very timely, given that we are in the middle of a global pandemic,

which has confined people indoors for long periods and encouraged an increase in sedentary behaviour,” said Professor Emmanuel Stamatakis from the University of Sydney. Exercise has numerous benefits for both physical and mental health, with research repeatedly linking high activity levels to lower rates of heart disease, cancer and depression, to name a few conditions. Based on research by more than 40 scientists across six continents, the WHO has recommended all adults be moderately active for 150 to 300

minutes a week. Alternatively, 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous exercise – or some combination of strenuous and moderate activity – every seven days is said to have the same benefits. Among children and teenagers, the WHO recommends an hour of moderate-to-vigorous intensity exercise across the week. The organisation also stressed people of all ages should minimise time spent sat down, but added “evidence was insufficient to quantify a sedentary behaviour threshold”. “Although the new guidelines reflect the best available science, there are still some gaps in our knowledge,” said Professor Stamatakis. People aged 65 or over should particularly focus on strength training and activities that promote balance at a minimum moderate intensity on three or more days a week. Writing in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, the WHO lists examples of balance training as “walking backwards or sideways, or standing on one foot while doing an upper body muscle strengthening activity, such as bicep curls”.

Tutu trek Three friends decided recently, over a beer (or two), to try and raise some money for charity. The three – Mark, Michael and Phil – decided to climb a mountain dressed in tutus. Mark explained, “The outfit choice was decided by our friends, family and fabulous customers (from both Casa Mia and Carmen's) via a Facebook poll. Tutu was by far the favourite choice!” The Callosa mountain, at 518

metres high, took the trio a total of three and a quarter hours to climb before enjoying a picnic lunch at the summit before descending. “Fortunately there were no injuries or mishaps!” said Mark, “Each of us feel very passionate for the charity we individually chose. I chose Combat Stress as the charity does so much for veterans who are suffering with PTSD and other mental health issues and I am a veteran, retired from the

British Army after a 26 year career. Michael chose Little Pod Association as he is a very big animal lover and this particular charity is struggling at the moment. Phil chose the Jose San Obrero Orphanage as he knows how much the children appreciate all the help and extra support that they receive via the generous donations raised by everyone. We raised a total of €3018, €1006 for each charity. We were overwhelmed.”

Worried for my son My 24-year-old son has been seeing a girl for several months. His girlfriend is very flashy and wears expensive clothes. At the moment this girl's parents finance her wardrobe, but when I bumped in to her mother, she said she and her husband would be glad once she leaves home so that she can pay for these things herself. I am worried this burden will fall to my kind, generous son. He has a job but they will need their money to pay rent on a home. I am worried because when I asked him about it, he said he would just get a second job. I can see trouble ahead, and I want to speak to them both, but my husband says to let him make his own decisions / mistakes and I should keep out of it. It's very hard when you can see your children heading for a fall, and so tempting to want to protect them. I think to a degree your husband is right in letting young adults make their own mistakes - it's how they learn. However, you have already spoken to your son and he has resigned himself to getting an extra job to keep her happy. I don't imagine this situation will last long, as resentment usually sets in further down the line. However, you could try speaking to them both. It's not enough to say, 'leave them to it', but be careful not to criticise your future daughter in law. Rather point out that everyone has to tighten their belt when starting out in life - you know this because you've been in that situation, and it's all about getting priorities in order. Advise that they don’t want to end up in debt. After that, you can leave them to it. WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. A PSEUDONYM WILL BE USED IF YOU WISH. Companies can refuse to hire people who do not wish to be vaccinated against coronavirus The President of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), Christa Schweng, said on Sunday that “it is obviously possible” for companies to avoid hiring a worker if they refuse to be vaccinated against Covid-19. “As an employer, I can decide with whom I sign a contract”, said the president of the EESC, the consultative body of the European Union which issues guidance to Community institutions on behalf of employers, workers and organizations of the European Union. “The worker,” Schweng says, “can decide whether he wants to work (for the company) or not” although “it would have to be seen if an employer only wants vaccinated people in his company.” “I don’t know what they’re going to do,” she said. Faced with the vaccination campaigns that European governments are starting to present, the President of the EESC does not think that the injection should be compulsory, “each one must decide individually if he wants it or not”. She believes that the first to benefit should

be health workers, “because it is they who are most easily in contact with patients” and the elderly at risk. Schweng claims that “the contracts of the European Commission (EC) with pharmaceutical companies to guarantee vaccines for all of Europe” were “a good idea” because “with individual action by member states, this would not have never worked so well “. Brussels has signed agreements with Pfizer and BioNTech, AstraZeneca,

Sanofi-GSK and Johnson & Johnson and has concluded negotiations with CureVac and Moderna. All vaccines must first receive approval from the European Medicines Agency (EMA), which has already indicated that it does not plan to evaluate anything before the end of the year. “This crisis has shown how important Europe and (…) European cooperation is” and “this is where we say that a European Health Union is needed”, said Schweng.

A virus could be new killer weapon against cancer A 'stealth bomber' virus could be the new killer weapon against cancer - and it's put together like Lego blocks. Many cancer researchers have already devised "smart bombs" that allows a controlled release of two different anti-cancer drugs. But scientists say that what has been missing is the stealth bomber - a delivery system that can slip through the body's radar defences. Now they believe that the newly engineered virus could stamp out tumour growth in metastatic cancer patients. Study lead author Professor Dmitry Shayakhmetov, of Emory University School of Medicine in the US, said: "This is a new avenue for treatment of metastatic cancers. "You can arm it with genes and proteins that stimulate immunity to cancer, and you can assemble the capsid, a shell of the virus, like you're putting in Lego blocks." Cancer killing viruses, known as oncolytic viruses, have been discussed and tested for decades. One such virus against melanoma was approved by the Food and Drugs Agency (FDA) in 2015. But scientists have always faced an overwhelming barrier in the fight against metastatic cancers, being the human immune system. The body's defence system quickly captures viruses injected into the blood stream and sends them to the liver, the body's rubbish disposal. Now, researchers have found a way around that barrier by reengineering the virus delivery system so that the virus is not easily caught by parts of the immune system. This makes it possible to inject the virus into the blood without causing a massive inflammatory reaction.

Prof Shayakhmetov said: "The innate immune system is quite efficient at sending viruses to the liver when they are delivered intravenously. For this reason, most oncolytic viruses are delivered directly into the tumour, without affecting metastases. "In contrast, we think it will be possible to deliver our modified virus systemically at doses high enough to suppress tumour growth -- without triggering lifethreatening systemic toxicities." The study includes a structure of the reengineered delivery system and the virus's ability to eliminate disseminated tumours in mice. Scientists focused on reengineering adenovirus, a delivery system that has been used in dozens of cancer clinical trials to stimulate host antitumour response. Adenoviruses have also been central to gene therapy studies. Prof Shayakhmetov recalls the death of Jesse Gelsinger during a gene therapy clinical trial in 1999. The volunteer died of cytokine storm and multi-organ failure connected with high doses of an adenovirus vector delivered into the

bloodstream. Prof Shayakhmetov said: "That event inspired me to retool adenovirus, so that it would not set off a strong inflammatory reaction." He views the re-engineered adenovirus as a platform technology, which can be adapted and customised

for many types of cancer, and even to individual cancer patients as a form of personalised cancer therapy. Prof Shayakhmetov started working on the modified virus technology while he was at the University of Washington and founded a company, AdCure Bio, to bring a potentially life-saving therapy to patients with metastatic disease. In 2012, he published research on how

adenovirus interacts with one host factor in the blood, coagulation factor X, in Science. Co-study author Professor Phoebe Stewart, of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, said: "Sometimes even small changes in structural proteins can be catastrophic and prevent assembly of the infectious virus. "In this case, we modified adenovirus in three places to minimise virus interactions with specific blood factors. "We found that the virus still assembles and remains functional for infecting and killing tumour cells." It is still possible for a slower-building adaptive immune response to develop to the modified virus, similar to that observed with a vaccine. The researchers say a panel of viruses could be used among cancer patients to extend therapeutic benefits. Prof Shayakhmetov said: "Our study is the first to show that we can modify the binding of natural IgM to adenovirus. "We introduced mutations that

prevent virus inactivation in the bloodstream and its trapping in liver macrophages, the largest pool of immune cells in our body that trap and destroy pathogens. "Up to now, the prevailing view has been that any regular repeating structure, like the shell of the virus, would attract low-affinity natural IgM antibody binding, leading to its prompt inactivation and removal from the blood." The researchers also replaced part of the adenovirus that interacts with human cellular integrins, substituting a sequence from another human protein that targets the virus to tumour cells. When injected into mice, high doses of standard adenovirus triggered liver damage and death within a few days, but the modified virus did not. The modified virus could eliminate disseminated tumours from some, but not all mice engrafted with human lung cancer cells. A complete response - lack of detectable tumours and prolongation of survival - was observed in about thirty five percent of animals. And scientists found tumour sites in the lung were converted into scar tissue. Now, Prof Shayakhmetov's lab is exploring approaches to further increase the proportion of complete responders. He added: "In the clinic, metastatic lung cancer would be the type of cancer most appropriate to test an oncolytic virus against. "The technology could also be harnessed for gene therapy applications." The findings were published in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

Van Halen’s Ferrari on sale

The late guitarist Eddie Van Halen's custom six-speed manual 2000 Ferrari 550 Maranello is up for grabs on the auction site Gotta Have Rock and Roll. The Ferrari is powered by a 5.5litre V-12 that produces 479 horsepower. The legendary guitarist passed away in October at the age of 65 from lung cancer. He was an avid car collector and owned, among others, a Lamborghini Miura, a Porsche 911 GT3 RS, and two Audi R8s, a V-8 and a V-10. He also owned this custom, six-speed manual 2000 550 Ferrari, which is currently up for auction with a $200,000 reserve.

The car has 28,000 miles on the odometer. Van Halen used the V12–powered Ferrari to race alongside his brother, Alex Van Halen, who was the drummer of the band Van Halen. The black 550 Maranello is equipped with custom wheels, racing seats, and a roll cage and was reportedly serviced by a Ferrari mechanic. Michael Jordan also owned a 550, which was seen in the ESPN docuseries The Last Dance. The Ferrari 550 Maranello is powered by a front-engine 479hp 5.5-liter V-12 and could be had with a glorious six-speed manual transmission. During Car and Driver testing, a six-speedmanual-equipped example

reached 60 mph in 4.2 seconds and a 12.7-second quarter-mile at 115 mph. Eddie Van Halen's 2000 Ferrari 550 Maranello sale went live on November 25 with a reserve set at $200,000. The original registration in Van Halen's name, and a Gotta Have Rock & Roll certificate of authenticity is included in the sale. Bidding closes on Friday 4th December. https://www.gottahaverockandr oll.com/Eddie_Van_Halen_Owne d_2000_Black_Ferrari_550_Custo -LOT34808.aspx

Keep your Number Plate Clear The number plate on a vehicle serves as a unique visible indicator that allows for the identification of certain elements such as the vehicle´s owner, to those with access to the necessary database. For everyone else, it still serves to provide information which could be of use, such as the age of the vehicle if you are planning to purchase it, for example. In Spain, number plates used to carry a distinction which identified where the vehicle was registered. This can still be seen on some older vehicles, such as the prefix “M” for Madrid, “A” for Alicante or “MU” for Murcia. These days, the number plates don´t display those characteristics, but are formed by 4 numbers and 3 letters. If you check the DGT website, dgt.es, you will be able to see the current series of letters being used, which are LLD as of November 2020. There are also apps available which will allow you to work back and show the age of a vehicle, or at least when the series in the number plate was being used. You can of course check the full vehicle history on the DGT website as well. Normally, the number plate must be displayed, and in a fixed location such as the bumper, at both the front and rear of the vehicle. Some vehicles have special locations for the display of the rear number plate, which is also acceptable if that location is part of the original manufacturing specification and has been approved. Motorcycles and scooters (including microcars) must display their number plate at the rear. There are very clear specifications for the number plate, in terms of the height of the characters for example, the colour, size and shape, all of which means that only certified manufacturers of number plates are allowed to make them. You are not allowed to simply take

a piece of cardboard and colour it in with a crayon, for example. Tampering with the original number plate is also an offence. There have been countless occurrences of drivers attempting to mask the real number of their vehicle, sometimes using tape, sometimes using specialist sprays that claim to hide the numbers in the event of being snapped by a traffic camera. Whether these methods work or not is irrelevant, they are illegal.

These days, new acrylic number plates are replacing the old metal ones. The metal number plates soon faded in the sun, rendering them both useless and illegal, whereas the modern acrylic ones remain clear at all times. If you do have a metal number plate, especially if it is faded, you really must get them replaced immediately. Metal number plates were also prone to damage. Sometimes an object may

strike them and cause damage, and it was not unknown for children to occasionally inflict damage to them by bending them. Bending them back in shape often caused them to break. Their acrylic relatives are far more resilient to damage and bending, and last considerably longer. The number plate must be visible at all times, day and night, and must not be obscured by anything, including dirt. At night, it must be illuminated. You are also not allowed to alter the number plate in any way, such as putting stickers or name tags on it for example. Only number plates which are certified for use in Spain can be used on vehicles registered in Spain. That is why, if you are towing a trailer for example, you must replicate the vehicle´s number plate at the back, in addition to the unique number plate of the trailer, if applicable. If you are carrying items such as bicycles, they sometimes come with an additional holder for the number plate, as the original may not be visible when obscured by the carrying frame. It is also why the traffic police have been able to fine a number of Catalan drivers recently, who, in their hope of independence from Spain, are installing number plated displaying the Catalan flag, and three-letter code “CAT”, which is not currently (if it ever will be) recognised in Spain, and therefore illegal. The number plate is an essential element of the vehicle. They do allow for identification in the event of committing an offence, but also allow for identifying and locating a vehicle in the event of theft or damage. Keeping your number plates clean and clear is a must if you want to avoid being stopped and facing a fine, or worse.

Can I Dial 999 to Summon Help in Spain?

There are many questions we come across on a regular basis which have become embedded in popular culture, shared through social networks, like the bar and pub of old, and the internet sites of new, and have become firmly fixed in many a people's mind. But that belief can also have potentially serious consequences, if the information is wrong. Can I Dial 999 to summon the emergency services in Spain? NO! The European emergency number is 112. Please get that number firmly

embedded in your mind, 112. It is true that if you have a UK mobile phone, even without credit or contract, it can be used in an emergency, but if you're in a European country (not the UK), the number which works is 112. All mobile operators are committed to ensuring that emergency contact is available, irrespective of if you have credit. You may, on occasion, have seen your phone status saying something like, "Emergency Only". If you try to phone your mum to ask her to warm your spaghetti hoops up because you're "starving", that's not a real emergency and your phone won't work

if in emergency mode. But if you are in serious need of assistance, dialling 112 will put you through to the emergency operators, who do speak English in Spain by the way. Similarly, many smartphones have a locked function to protect our data. That locked function can often be bypassed in an emergency, but only for summoning help. If you are in Spain, or any other European country, the number to remember is 112. Repeat with us, "in an emergency, dial 112", and forget what you may have heard about that other three digit number.

Elche v Cadiz a Game of Two Halves Match reports Abbey Anglers & Rods N Reels On Tuesday 24thNovember Abbey Anglers fished the second round of the Memorial trophy at the ever popular El Bosquet Complex. Upon arrival the temperature was at a very low 3 degrees and we feared the worst for the fishing. 22 anglers took part and as usual we fished pegs 17 to 40. The weather soon warmed up and the match took place in very nice conditions and the complex fished well. Winner on the day was Terry “Mr Paste” Brindley who took full advantage of a favourable draw and fishing the pole and expander pellets he took several carp to weigh 16.94kg. Second was Neil McBernie who again fished the pole but with maggots to weigh 10.26kg and he was closely followed in third by yours truly Ian Brown with 10.24kg who used similar tactics and maggots. The pairs competition was won by Terry and Neil with and myself and a newcomer to the club Trevor Howard (Not “The Trevor” from Up Pompei fame) taking the runners up spot. On Wednesday 25th November 2020, Rods N Reels fished the annual Fur& Feather match at the El Bosquet Complex. The weather was overcast and the temperatute was about 8 degrees upon arrival. Due to the

numbers competeing we had touse pegs 13 to 40 which included 4 pegs on the new section. Winner on the day was the venue specialist and a fantastic fisherman Neil McBerie, he fished the pole with maggot from peg 39 for 21.94kg. Second drawn on the hot new peg , peg 16 on the new section was ex England International fly fisherman, Richard “ Tricky Dickie “ Wood, who also fished the pole in a very unconventional style according to his fellow competitors to catch 20.84kg of small carp. Third was Tony McMillan who again fished the long pole from peg 37 for 17.26 kg. The pairs was by Tony McMillan and Vinnie Smith with a combined weight of 28.20kg closely followed by Neil & Bill Read with26.06kg. Section winners apart from the above were Terry Brindley 10.98kg, Richard King 11.22kg and John Waples 5.06kg. Several anglers attended the Final Whistle at La Marina after the match for curry and chilli. All the anglers would like to thank Bill Reade for all his organisation of the match and the hard work that he does. Further details of how to join both the clubs and details of any forthcoming matches can be found on the website abbeyangling.es Ian Brown

Having drawn their last 2 games Elche CF drew again on Saturday to make it 3 in a row! Elche started their 9th game of the season in 10th place with 12 points, whilst their opponents, Cadiz, were in 5th with just 2 more points. The away side, nicked named the Yellow Submarine, held this seasons best away recorded within La Liga, winning 4 out of the 5 games including beating both Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao. It was going to be a tough ask. Jorge Almiron made 2 changes which included starting with Cadiz born Luismi and Guido Carrillo, the signing from Southampton, whilst continuing with his 5 man defensive plan. From the off the Franjiverdes wanted the ball and they got it, with Cadiz only managing to profit from inaccurate passes. However, goal opportunities were not available until the 35th minute when 3 came along all at once! Firstly Pere Milla unleashed

an 18 yard belter which really tested Ledesma the yellow submarine's goalie. Secondly Elche tried and failed with a bouncing header to the corner. Thirdly Lucas Boye, former River Plate and Reading player, executed a clinical and successful shot to put Elche ahead, and for a short while in 5th place in La Liga! Just 5 minutes later the ref awarded Cadiz with a penalty, as 2 rival players collided mid-air in front of the Elche goal. VAR was consulted for many minutes before the ref admitted that it was a handball by the Cadiz player, Jonsonn. 3 minutes into the extra 5 minutes of stoppage time, Lucas Boye went from hero to villain. VAR was not needed for his sending off, as he elbowed Fali right in front of the ref. The Argentinians ingrained natural over exuberance, getting him his second yellow of the game and resulting in Elche having to play with just 10 men. Needless to say, the second half

was a Cadiz monologue. The inevitable goal came on the 55 minute mark. Poignantly it was scored by Elche born Alvaro Gimenez. He had gone through the Ilicitiano youth programme and played for the Franjiverdes in 2007-2008 and then from 2013 to 2016. Cadiz scored again, only to have the goal disallowed as it was assisted by the arm of one of their own players. Elche did well to keep the Yellow Submarine in check and to gain another vital point. Elche CF will travel the 250km within the Comunidad Valencia to Estadio de la Cerámica in Villarreal, for their next game on Sunday 6th November at 18:00. As soon as spectators are allowed back into the stadiums, EuroTourGuide will once again be offering Coach Tours with Match Tickets to support Elche CF. TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT stick five past the Hammers, you hope Burnley are up soon.

■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Sean Dyche must have had a plan so cunning it could have been a Leicester mascot - but we never got to fully understand it after his side went behind before any of his three strikers even touched the ball.

Ah, the first Premier League column after the death of one Diego Maradona. You see, if I was a football commentator I’d have a lovely long list of Maradona things to crowbar into today’s column even some as tenuous as Allan dribbling past half a player for Everton to find himself likened to the Argentine god because, yes, they both played for Napoli. I admit that was the first likeness I had in my head as the defensive midfielder slowly moved three yards looking surprised that he still had the ball at his feet. Anyway, we have bigger things to concern ourselves with - that cyber attack Manchester United faced last week was way bigger than we first reported. Apparently, top dogs at Old Trafford are concerned that the club’s transfer plans might have been hacked and are in the hands of people demanding a ransom. I kid you not, there are cyber criminals out there expecting United to cough up millions for a one-page document that has JADON SANCHO scribbled on it using very big crayons. The biggest clash of this weekend was not Spurs vs Chelsea, Brighton vs Liverpool or even Southampton vs Manchester United - it was, in fact, against BT Sport. King Kloppo was not in the greatest mood before the game, probably down to the fact that his cries of ‘12:30 on a Saturday is crazy if you played on a Wednesday’ were falling on very deaf ears. He was even more grumpy having seen three VAR decisions all (correctly) go against his side and watched James Milner limp off with a muscle injury which was, without doubt, the black magic work of the TV broadcaster. Firstly, Jurgey-lad upped the sarcasm levels to comment on how ‘armpits’ and ‘club badges’ had been called offside this season and now ‘a toe’. Yes, Jurgen and a toe is offside no matter how much it upsets you, I’m afraid. There was no argument over Mane’s goal being chalked off and then there was that penalty. To remain consistent with my thoughts over this kind of malarkey, I revert to my tried and tested ‘anywhere else on the pitch’ test - and, sorry Kloppo, that’s a foul anywhere else on the pitch. Like it or not, Robbo kicked Welbz in the foot after Welbeck got to the ball first and that’s a penalty. If anything, we should be applauding the officials for getting it right - ah, actually you did do that Jurgen, my apologies. Hendo would rather play without VAR and Milner has suggested it’s making people fall out of love with the game - I tend to agree, but whilst it is alive and kicking it’s time to suck it up and move on to the next thing on the moans list. Which just happened to be Chris Wilder who is, apparently, the Scrooge of football for not wanting everyone to have five substitutes allowed. Each to their own, Chris - you do have slightly bigger things to worry about after all,

having lost 1-0 to the other team that looked incapable of winning this season.

tap out some ‘Ole Out!’ chat into social media after the first 45 minutes on the South Coast? Liars, all of you.

Brighton, as good as they were, will have been delighted that Neal Maupay had gone off injured by the time it came to another penalty needing to be taken. We’ve seen some shockers (mainly from Fulham) recently, but Maupay certainly gets on the podium.

In a different time, we’d be calling this ‘classic United’ - turning around a 2-0 deficit with an injury time winner from a substitute. In fact, that is almost the most ‘classic United’ thing you could describe - unless they’d got a penalty as well, of course.

Frank Lampard’s Chelsea showed off the Premier League title ambitions by being unable to break down Jose Mourinho’s equally hopeful-of-a-title Spurs at Stamford Bridge. Last week, we called Tottenham’s win over City a Mourinho masterclass but in retrospect, this was more the classic Mourinho match against a close rival. Why win it when a point will do? And in fairness, Jose is right in this instance what with every other team looking reluctant to take control of the title race - I know, I am starting to sound like I actually want Jose to win the title and you know what, maybe I do. It feels very much like a Jose title to win this season, a war of attrition where not losing is almost as valuable as winning.

For a moment, forget KDB - it’s all about JWP. James Ward-Prowse didn’t deserve to end up on the losing side as he reminded Solskjaer of the days he played with someone with an equally deadly set-piece.

Imagine how many Edinson Cavani might have scored had he had his boots on when the second half kicked off at St Mary’s? Hands up if you were one of the millions already starting to

If you are a Man City fan and worried that your team isn’t scoring enough, you normally check the fixture list to see when you are next playing either West Ham or Burnley. And if you fail to

But after David de Gea injured himself trying to save a free-kick from behind the line, a pointless exercise in itself, United moved into top gear. Bruno Fernandes buzzed about and was at the middle of everything less rubbish than in the first half and between him and the chisel-jawed front man, helped United take all three points. And those three points give this side a new club record for amount of consecutive away wins. ‘Ole out?’, eh?

Carlo Ancelotti vs Marcelo Bielsa has taken a quarter of a century to come together and it was very much worth the wait. You know what they say, it’s usually the 35th shot of the match that gets the result and that was the case at Goodison Park. Between them, both sides found multiple ways to hit the woodwork, get goals disallowed and, frankly, just miss sitters until Raphinha stuck one past Jordan Pickford from distance. Friday night treated us to the gift of two teams going at it playing 442 in some kind of early 90s retrothrowback. I’m not saying that Roy Hodgson or Steve Bruce are oldfashioned, but it was quite reassuring to watch a game where I could name each position on a pitch without needing an analyst to explain it to me. In a game that was likely to involve both Joelinton and Christian Benteke, you’d have been wise to back a 0-0. Sadly for you, Callum Wilson is pretty lethal in front of goal and even Joelinton got one to almost go in cleanly. We end today safe in the knowledge that Chelsea Football Club do put their supporters first and that charging inand-around £75 to let their 2000 fans in for the first time is purely to make sure those that really, really, really want to be there apply. If today’s column has made you think ‘oh, Jimmy would like this’ then go one step further and buy Jimmy a Christmas present in the shape of my Tales from the Top Flight Premier League Yearbook available on Amazon for less than a tenner (or eight Chelsea tickets).

New Stray Sod Golf Society plays Las Colinas

Las Ramblas Golf Society Firstly this week we offer a very warm welcome to two new members of our society, Andy and Andrea Martin. I’m sure you’ll be seeing their names quite often in the future. Fourteen pairs took part in Monday’s ‘2 ball better ball’. With 44 points it was Friedel Knebell and John Shervell who took the top spot on the winner’s rostrum. Standing just below them, with 43 points, were Trevor Pullyblank and Mike Chapman. I awoke early on Wednesday and managed to convince myself it was actually a Tuesday (it comes to us all in the end you know!) Resplendent in my ‘final round’ navy blue and white (sound familiar?) it was a mad dash to get down to the 1st tee for the 6th and final round of this year’s Club Championship. With the player’s best 4 cards to count, one good score could change everything! On the day it was Trevor Pullyblank who took the spoils with 40 points. Graham Murray was a close second with 39 (and beating me on countback with 37) it was Lindsay

Forbes who took the bronze. Best finish of the day for the ladies went to AnneMarie Weisheit, again with 37 points. Two ‘2’s today which went to Mark Western and Graham Murray. Lindsay’s final round score was enough to hang onto 1st place and with a total of 144 points be crowned this year’s champion. Myself and Trevor were hot on his heels with us both scoring a total of 141. After countback it was it was Trevor who got the nod to finish this year’s runner up. In the ladies section Olga Douglas’s final round score of 36 saw her take the overall title with 139 points. Petina Murray fell at the last hurdle to take the runner’s up place with a total of 135 points and Joyce McClusky claimed 3rd

with 132. Aptly Trevor and myself, together with John Dobson and ‘Albert’, with a score of 86 points, made upthe winning team in Friday’s ‘Change Partners’. Just one point behind us were Bryan Neal, Mike Chapman, Petina and once again ‘Albert’. Pues hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell

Friday saw the second outing of the new Stray Sod Golf Society, with 33 players braving the elements to sample the delights of Las Colinas. The results were: Nearest the pin Stewart Clancy and Gerry Gibbson. Longest drive male: Jono O’Keeffe, longest drive female: Eithne Dempsey. In third place with 35 points was Gerry Gibbson, second place with 36 points was Jono O’Keeffe and in first place with 39 was Trainer John. Despite the rain, a great day was had by all and the players retired to The Stray Sod for a warming bowl of Irish stew. The next outing will be La Finca Golf on Tuesday 22nd December and will be the Festive Fun round. To book your place call Aisling at Stray Sod Green Fees on: 966 775 920.
