Christmas restrictions for the Valencian Community See Main Advert on page 30-31

The Generalitat agreed at the weekend what measures it would adopt for the region over the festive period. The curfew has been made more flexible on 24th, 25th and 31st December with the time to be off the street extended

to1.30am. For the rest of the days, the midnight curfew is maintained as before. In addition, the Generalitat extends the perimeter confinement of the Valencian Community until 15th January. The interdepartmental commission also agreed to maintain the limitation to six people in social gatherings but raises the limit to 10 in family gatherings on 24th, 25th, 26th and 31st December and 1st January. However, in these family gatherings it is recommended not to exceed two households. In addition, closing time for catering and hospitality establishments on 24th to 26th and 31st December is 1am, and no orders can be accepted after 12.30am. President Puig said that ‘the current epidemiological situation advises the Generalitat to extend the restrictions to try to stop the infections, whilst

establishing flexibility in some of them on the occasion of the Christmas celebrations’. Following the meeting Puig demanded prudence and maturity and for people to have a different Christmas and with “responsible joy". He was joined in the meeting by Minister for Health, Ana Barceló. The interdepartmental commission also agreed that the control measures that are currently in place be adopted until 15th January (with the exception of the days and measures outlined above). Puig said that a month and a half after the measures agreed in October, which includes the perimeter closure, the situation is hopeful. He added that although he sees a change in trend, he also foresees critical months in December and January due to the cold, flu season and the festive social contact.

Spain considers a fourday week Spain’s Ministry of work is 'loosely' considering cutting the working week to four days over 32 hours rather than the standard 40 hours over five days – and opinions are divided over whether it would work. Experts across the board largely believe the idea is a good one, but some have doubts about whether Spain is

'ready for it' and how it would work out in practice. Nuria Chinchilla of the International Work and Family Centre, an expert in work-life balance issues, says what is needed instead is 'flexibility' on the part of employers. “What would be really useful is if companies, as far as they are able,

introduced flexible working hours according to their needs; cutting the working week to four days could actually be counter-productive – five days but with less-rigid hours is more sensible,” she says. Employment psychologist Juan Pedro Sánchez, an expert on helping companies increase productivity, applauds the idea and calls it 'magnificent' – as long as the firm's activity allows it and productivity does not decrease. “Undoubtedly, having an extra day off would allow us to spend more time on our personal lives and with our families and friends; this said, it's probably more important for this worklife balance to be found on a daily, not weekly, basis. We mustn't forget that work and rest are two sides of the same coin: Productivity,” he argues. Head of workplace health at one of Spain's main unions, the Labourers' Commissions (CCOO), Óscar Bayona, says the proposal is 'interesting on paper' because it 'could have really positive impacts on employee health', but laments that Spain is 'light years away' from being able to make it work. “Labour relations are becoming more and more precarious and working

conditions more and more hazardous to health,” he warns. “We work seven million hours in unpaid overtime every week. Millions of hours we're giving free of charge to our companies.” Many companies and countries have carried out experiments with working hours to try to improve general employee health and productivity, reduce stress and anxiety, and motivate their staff. New Zealand-based legal company Perpetual Guardian allowed its staff to cut their working week to four days, with fewer hours but on the same pay – and it turned out to be such an 'absolute success', according to the firm, that it now plans to adopt it permanently. Academic research found that 78% of the 250 employees were just as able to complete their work in four days as in five, and that they were able to manage demands of professional and personal life much easier, leading to stress levels falling by 7% and job satisfaction rising by 5%. Many unions, academics and experts have been campaigning for some time for different working structures for the 21st century, considering the typical eight-hour day to be 'old-fashioned' and

that a system which 'better suits the times' should be introduced. At the moment, the idea is still at the 'social dialogue' and 'exploring' stage, but one of the reasons for its being raised, in addition to better quality of life all round, is that it could lead to more jobs being created. Unions have long warned that companies who allow, or expect, their staff to work unpaid extra time are reducing availability of jobs, since if nobody worked any longer than they were paid to, the additional hours would need to be covered and new vacancies could be created. Podemos believes that, in theory, if staff were to work 80% of their usual week, it would create a 20% increase in vacancies as the extra time would need to be covered; although on the flip side, it believes many employees would be able to fit their entire existing jobs into 80% of their current hours, giving them more time to relax, enjoy themselves, and spend time with friends and family. One of the main drawbacks experts have highlighted, though, is that companies may opt to cut wages by 20% in line with the reduction in hours, and even if this was not permitted by law, would be difficult to police.

CaixaBank shareholders vote in favour of Bankia buyout

Processionary caterpillar spraying starts

The Department of the Environment of the Orihuela City Council has started the treatment against the processionary pine caterpillar across the municipality. Councillor Dámaso Aparicio explained that in the first phase "a treatment will be carried out against the caterpillars that are feeding on the needles of the pines at this time of year, using a biological spray. The processionary pine caterpillar attacks trees in the Mediterranean pine forests causing defoliation and limited growth. The damage weakens them and makes them prone to the attack of other pests. The caterpillars are also harmful to animals and children, as their hairs cause

irritation to the skin, eyes and nose. In severe cases they affect the respiratory system. Between January and March the next phase of the treatment will continue with the placement of interception rings to stop the descent of the caterpillars from their nests in the trees. Once they descend to the ground they bury themselves and form the chrysalis from which the butterflies will emerge in the months of May and June. For this reason, between the months of May and August (the butterfly flight period), the males will be captured using pheromone traps, in order to disrupt the flight curve.

A majority of CaixaBank's shareholders have voted in favour of a merger with partially State-owned entity Bankia – the result of which would be the largest financial firm on the high street. Following an extraordinary general meeting, it was decided that the firm would continue under the name of CaixaBank, its head office would be in Valencia, and its subsidiary headquarters would be in Madrid and Barcelona. CaixaBank chairman Jordi Gual says the takeover would create a 'more solid, efficient and profitable' corporation which is likely to become the biggest high-street bank in Spain. Over 15,400 shareholders – some present and some via their representatives, and who own 70.3 percent of CaixaBank's capital – took part in the meeting, although it is not clear how many voted in favour of the buyout. Bankia – the result of a State bail-out of high-street entities Bancaja and Caja Madrid in 2012 when both were facing closure – would be completely swallowed up by CaixaBank, which would hold 74.2 percent of the capital to Bankia's 25.8 percent. The move, and the resulting structure, were voted upon and agreed at an extraordinary shareholders' meeting Bankia held on 1st December. Having been given the nod by shareholders of both banks, the merger is likely to get under way within the first quarter of 2021 and be fully operational before the end of next year – subject to agreement by the relevant regulatory and competition authorities. Gual – now due to step down as chairman - defends the decision, though, on the grounds that CaixaBank 'needs to be ready for the demands in the business environment' arising through an imminent 'new wave of restructuring' in the banking industry. And managing director for CaixaBank,

Gonzalo Gortázar, calls it a 'great opportunity to create added value' for 'all stakeholders', including both banks' shareholders. The buyout will allow the joint enterprise to save up to €1 billion a year in expenses - €290 million in major investments and around €770m in running costs – and, by the year 2022, an improvement of between one and two percentage points in return on tangible equity (RoTE). With the pandemic still an issue, Gortázar admits he is unable to predict likely profit increases over the next few years, but using data reached through recent consensus among analysts, a posttakeover situation could see RoTE hover around 8% and dividends on shares rise by about 28 percent by the year 2022. The stock swap ratio has been set at 0.6845 new ordinary shares in CaixaBank

per Bankia share, plus bonus shares at 20 percent. CaixaBank shareholders have nominated the new board of directors for the post-merger era: José Ignacio Goirigolzarri Tellaeche, Joaquín Ayuso García, Francisco Javier Campo García, Eva Castillo Sanz, Teresa Santero Quintillá and María Costa Duarte Ulrich. Executive directors will include the current MD, Gonzalo Gortázar Rotaeche, Tomás Muniesa Arantegui (deputy chairman), José Serna Masiá, María Verónica Fisas Vergés, Cristina Garmendia Mendizábal, María Amparo Moraleda Martínez, Eduardo Javier Sanchiz Irazu, John Shepard-Reed, and Koro Usarraga Unsain. CaixaBank was originally set up in Catalunya 115 years ago, and has been known as Caixa Catalunya and La Caixa until it took on its current name recently.

Orihuela supports workers with disabilities The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, and the Councillor for Employment, Víctor Valverde, have taken delivery of three new vehicles after the previous vans were damaged in the DANA last September. After the catastrophe, the three vehicles, which were used to transport ILDO personnel for gardening and cleaning duties, were declared a total write-off and so the local government had to acquire three new vans for a total amount of 74,700 euros. ILDO is a special employment centre and municipal company of social initiative, whose main objective is to ensure the employment of people with functional diversity who are experiencing difficulties in accessing the labour market.

It is an organisation committed to the integration of people with disabilities and the Councillor for Employment was keen to highlight the support Orihuela Town Hall gives. He explained that according to a study by the ONCE, this year there have been 32 percent fewer hirings of people with disabilities at a national level, however “in Orihuela we broke that trend with the hiring of 20 people now added to the current staff, and to the 14 hirings that took place in 2018, so we maintain our commitment to the integration of people with disabilities into the workforce and to the work of ILDO”. Mayor Bascuñana highlighted that these vehicles "are one of the essential tools for the transfer of personnel to the

different garden areas of the districts of Orihuela, as well as for taking the cleaning staff to the different social centres”. The Mayor said he wanted to congratulate all ILDO workers "for their commitment and good work in all the assignments and tasks they perform on a daily basis." The activities carried out by ILDO are the service of conditioning, conservation and maintenance of parks and green areas, maintenance and conservation of mountains and forests, interior and exterior cleaning services and laundry duties. In addition, since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, it also offers a disinfection service for public indoor and outdoor spaces.

Orihuela to host top beach handball tournament The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, and the Councillor for Sports, Víctor Bernabéu, recently me with the delegation of the Spanish Handball Federation, represented by the first vice-president José María Fernández; the president of the Beach Handball Commission of the RFEBM, Francisco Ordóñez; and the director of the RFEBM “Arena Handball Tour” national beach handball circuit, Óscar Miras. The meeting resulted in Orihuela being named as the location for the Arena1000 tournament for the next three years. The competition will be hosted at la Zenia’s Cala Bosque, during the months of June and July.

The Councillor for Sports stressed that despite the circumstances this year in which this event could not be held due to the Covid-19 pandemic “we have our hopes set on the next event, since we are hosting the greatest beach handball event in our country, and we have the opportunity to showcase Orihuela”. The Mayor highlighted the success of previous tournaments held on the Oriolan coast, and said that "the contract will soon be formalised to advance this important agreement for the promotion of Orihuela through sport." The first vice-president of the RFEBM said: “We are facing an exemplary tournament at the European level and we take into account that it will be an

Olympic sport in the future, that is why we are making a great bet on beach handball and we are obtaining very good results. For us it is a pleasure to have Orihuela hosting again because it has always shown a special affection for this sport.” Mayor of Orihuela congratulated the Councillor for Sports and his entire team ‘for the important work they do to guarantee the continuity of sporting events of this calibre in Orihuela’. He also explained that he believed "this tournament is a great showcase for the promotion of our city at all levels, and will have a positive impact on the economy and tourism in our municipality."

Brits face three month stay limit after Brexit Boris Johnson has given short shrift to Britons with holiday homes in Europe whose stays will be restricted under post-Brexit EU rules. From next month, UK nationals will be limited to a maximum of 90 days in any six month period in most European countries without a visa or residency permit. The rule will affect the estimated half a million British citizens with properties on the Continent and campaigners are calling on ministers to intervene in the hope that Brussels will relax the restrictions. They are asking that the limit be changed to 180 days in any 12 months, which would give more flexibility including the ability to stay for a longer period on any one trip – such as through the summer. However, Downing Street has dismissed the issue as a consequence of leaving the EU. Asked if Mr Johnson is sympathetic to the plight of the holiday home owners and whether he will lobby the EU on their behalf, his spokesman said: “The Prime Minister has been clear on the fact we are leaving the European Union and what that entails in terms of bringing back control of our money, borders and

laws.” Holiday home owners have complained that they are being treated worse than EU citizens, who are able to stay in the UK for up to six months without needing a visa. Earlier this year, Cabinet Office Minister Penny Mordaunt ruled out seeking an exemption from the EU rule. In response to a

parliamentary question, she wrote: ‘The Government is not seeking to agree specific mobility arrangements for owners of a second home.’ Campaign group 180 Days Visa Free has been calling on the Government to persuade the EU to change the rules. Earlier this year they wrote to MPs: ‘The Schengen 90/180 day rule will severely limit the rights of UK citizens to access their property assets at times of their choosing. ‘Many people spend one long period in the summer in their

house in Europe and also visit at other times. The 90/180 rule will prevent this. 'For example, if you spend July and August in the Schengen area, then visits will have to be limited to less than four weeks between March and June and less than four weeks between September and Christmas.’ The UK Government guidance on the rules state: ‘From January 1, 2021, you will be able to travel to other Schengen area countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa for purposes such as tourism. This is a rolling 180-day period. To stay for longer, to work or study, or for business travel, you will need to meet the entry requirements set out by the country to which you are travelling. ‘This could mean applying for a visa or work permit. You may also need to get a visa if your visit would take you over the 90 days in 180 days limit. 'Periods of stay authorised under a visa or permit will not count against the 90-day limit.’ David Young, an award-winning novelist, bought a two-bedroom home on the Greek island of Syros with his wife Stephanie two years ago.

San Miguel residents call for road changes The Neighbourhood Association "San Miguel Arcángel" and local residents from the town’s Balcon de la Costa Blanca urbanisation have written to the Department of Transport, Public Works and Mobility to request that changes are made to the CV-95 road works that are currently under way to the east of the town. The works will see two roundabouts added to main road as it skirts the town. The locals are requesting that a connection is made with the CV-95 in the San Miguel-Torrevieja traffic direction with the service road at the intersection of Avda de la Ronda Norte and Gran Vía streets, in the Balcón de la Costa Blanca urbanisation - which is the main artery that connects the town centre of the municipality with this residential area. This similar connection, has been carried out just opposite the urbanisation, in the service road to give access to the Ford dealership

Residents warn that the bus stops that have been planned on the edge of the road will block the traffic travelling along the CV-95 - which has a density that at that point exceeding ten thousand vehicles per day – as the road is narrow and vehicles will have to wait behind the bus as passengers get on and off. They are also concerned for the physical safety of passengers, as they will have to cross the service road and the two lanes of the CV95, to catch the bus if they want to travel in the direction. To solve this problem, residents propose that in the direction of the San Miguel-Torrevieja the bus stop be moved to the service road and that to guarantee safety in the Torrevieja-San Miguel direction, push-button traffic lights be installed to allow locals to cross safely. The neighbours want the Department of Public Works to respond to their requests, after claiming that Mayor Juan de Dios Fresneda (PSOE) has not helped,

despite his commitment to support the demands of the residents of the urbanisation. San Miguel Arcángel and local residents believe that the Mayor has done nothing to ensure greater security and accessibility within the works that are being carried out on the CV-95 as it passes through the municipality. The construction works of the roundabouts themselves, which were formally presented by the Generalitat in the previous mandate and began in October 2018, have been paralysed for a year for reasons that the Generalitat is unable to clarify. One of the roundabouts, which connects the road with the urban area, has been constructed and has resolved what was a black spot for traffic accidents. However, the signage hasn’t been installed and there are still works needed before it is completed. The project will see an investment of 1.4 million euros.

Spain’s coronavirus incidence rate falls According to the ministry’s latest report, released last week, the national incidence rate in Spain now stands at 251.61. This is less than half of what it was a month ago, when it reached 521 on 2nd November. Just days later, on 9th November, Spain recorded its highest incidence rate since the beginning of the pandemic: 529 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. With the exception of Castilla y León, La Rioja and the North African exclave city of Melilla, all of Spain’s regions now have an incidence rate below 400. What’s more, this number is falling across all regions in the Spanish mainland. Only the Canary Islands, the region with the best epidemiological situation in Spain, recorded a slight rise, with the 14day cumulative number of cases per 100,000 inhabitants now at 80. In the Balearic Islands, the figure has remained stable at 80 cases. The incidence rate is the most accurate indicator to measure the evolution of the pandemic – since it is a cumulative figure taken over several days it fluctuates less than the number of new daily cases, providing a more stable picture of

the situation. But there was also good news with respect to new diagnoses. According to the latest report, the Health Ministry recorded 9,331 cases last Wednesday, the second-lowest number since 13th October, confirming that new infections have fallen below 10,000. The number of Covid-19related deaths continues to fluctuate. Last Wednesday, the

Health Ministry added 273 fatalities to the official toll, a significant fall from Tuesday, when 442 victims were recorded. Tuesday’s figure was one of the highest recorded in Spain’s second wave, while the number reported on Wednesday was the lowest in nearly two weeks. The southern region of Andalusia recorded the highest number of Covid-19-related

deaths (85), followed by Catalonia (64) and Castilla-La Mancha and Valencia, which both reported 24. The official death toll since the beginning of the pandemic now stands at 45,784, although the real figure is likely to be much higher given that thousands of people died without being diagnosed during the first wave, meaning they were not included in the official count. Pressure on hospitals and intensive care units (ICUs) also continues to ease. According to the latest report, coronavirus patients now occupy 25.66 percent of ICU beds, down from 26.3 percent on Tuesday. The occupation rate of hospital beds also fell, dropping from 11.52 percent on Tuesday to 10.96percent. In principle, this positive trend should lead to a progressive fall in the number of deaths. The lower the pressure on ICUs, the lower the number of seriously ill patients, which makes deaths from Covid-19 less likely. The positivity rate, i.e. the percentage of tests that come back positive out of the total, also fell to 8.67 percent.

Calls for more accessibility in Orihuela The opposition councillor María García has commented on the activities to commemorate Disability Day stating “the gestures that have been carried out to commemorate the day of disability such as the lighting of the facades of some buildings or the reading of the manifesto are fine. However, at PSOE we hope that in addition to the gestures the government team has made, we want to know what commitments or projects does Councillor Baldó have to eliminate the barriers that continue to exist in the day-to-day life of people with disabilities”? Garcia added: “Orihuela continues without any specific projects, once again we only have the aesthetic moves, the photos of the national day but nothing more.” The socialist councillor recalled that although it has been practically a year since the accessibility meeting of the city council nothing has been achieved, the four working groups that were created more than 3 years ago lack activity. She called for the government to revisit the plans made and make advancements in improving the quality of life of these people. She pointed out that ‘the pavements are still narrow, the ramps in poor condition, lack of accessibility in shops and administrations, there is little adapted transport, and very little sports provision for people with any type of disability’. PSOE insists that this group is being severely hit by the Covid-19 health crisis since they are seeing increased difficulties they face daily “we hope that in the Budget Project for 2021, this department has included all these proposals from the manifestos such as the one that was read on Disability Day”.

Orihuela Costa residents horrified at rat infestation

Rubbish lying in the streets of Orihuela Costa is an on-going one of contention between local residents and the Town Hall. However, that battle has increased after a pile of rubbish in Villapiedra attracted a plague of rats. The rats run freely in the streets and have even entered homes and chewed through fibre optic cables. "The garbage and belongings accumulated on the street have been there for more than a month," says Antonio Cerdán, from CLARO, who alongside local residents recently denounced the situation which is also affecting three surrounding urbanisations - Cabo Sol, San José and Lomas de Cabo Roig - where there were also insect infestations. CLARO explained that although all

residents have been affected by the rats, some have suffered more than others. Leslie and Phil have had to renovate the entire fibre optic provision in their home after the rats destroyed it by gnawing on all the cables. Maureen Mooney, vice president of the neighbourhood association of "Lomas de Cabo Roig" complained about the lack of cleanliness and sanitation, although in recent days, at least, the City Council has finally removed the prunings that had accumulated in the park after two months. The complaint of the neighbours have now reached the ears of the Councillor for Health, José Galiano, who announced that he will meet with them to tackle the problem and make the arrangements to carry out the extermination of the annoying plague.

It’s definitely safe to say that almost everyone has faced extreme challenges this year. From an Estate Agents perspective, this year we’ve had to deal with some heartbreaking stories of reasons why people have needed to sell. I am glad to say it’s not all sad stories though, there are other reasons for selling properties this year like requiring more room to work from home. The main reason was needing more outside space whether that be a garden, roof solarium or just a bigger balcony. This year has highlighted for many, the exact characteristics they really want in a home and what features they’re willing to compromise on. Selling properties this year “virtually” has been challenging. Not impossible I hasten to add! But definitely challenging! We’ve had to come up with creative ways to show houses to prospective buyers that aren’t even in Spain. To this I say “thank God for technology!” WhatsApp video calls, FaceTime and Zoom have been a Godsend! Back in April when we were allowed to start showing properties again in person, was scary. We

only knew as much as everyone else did about the virus, and the thought of showing someone around other peoples homes was a frightening prospect. We created our own “Very Important Protection” (V.I.P.) bags and kitted all our prospective buyers out with face masks, hand sanitizer, gloves and even shoe covers! As it turned out, this was the smartest thing we could have done. Both our buyers and homeowners appreciated our extreme efforts and were grateful we have kept them all in a safe environment for viewings. On a few occasions this year we did have to postpone some completions, but not as many as we were anticipating. Buyers from abroad have made it over to Spain to complete their purchases whereas some sellers chose to leave Power Of Attorney in order to complete their sale without them being here. Remember this… No matter what, there are always solutions for practically everything! If you’re a buyer outside of Spain that’s ready to reserve a home here but the additional cost of a PCR test is holding you back from travelling right now, we have the solution! Anyone that reserves a property to buy through us during the month of December 2020, we will pay for up to two PCR tests! San Fulgencio pet register San Fulgencio town hall has launched a campaign to encourage residents to register their pets. The campaign, it says, aims to promote responsible pet ownership, to facilitate the recovery of the animal in case of loss and to reduce incidences of animal abandonment. The Department of Animal Welfare of San Fulgencio Town Hall, led by councillor Ana Mª Villena, wants to encourage residents of San Fulgencio to register their dogs, cats and exotic animals at a special ‘pet census’ as part of the municipal registry. Councillor Villena said that this is an action that “not many people know is mandatory, as stated in the municipal ordinance.” She also said that the aim of the pet register is “to facilitate the location of the owner or person responsible in case of loss or abandonment of the animal, promoting in this way responsible ownership.” Residents who live full time, or part time, in San Fulgencio can register their pets at the municipal registry offices located on Calle Trafalgar, and also at the Social Center on the urbanisation.

The registry will be open from Monday to Friday, from 9.00 am to 1.30 pm, and it will be necessary to request a prior appointment through the Sede Electronica or by calling 96 679 42 01 (San Fulgencio) or 96 679 56 99 (La Marina Urbanisation).

test proves the physical and psychological capacities to keep animals of these characteristics.” Owners of dangerous animals will also be asked to provide proof of civil liability insurance for damages to third parties valued at 1,202,020.42 euros.

Documentation required to register your pet includes the updated passport of the animal with all vaccinations up to date, the RIVIA certificate (Valencian Computer Registry of Animal Identification), the owner's identification document and the proof of payment of registration fees.

"We thus continue with the commitment made by this government team since the first day of the legislature, in which we are committed to a more respectful and conscious San Fulgencio with Animal Welfare," said Villena.

The cost of registration is 15 euros "which includes an identification plate with the registration number, as well as a gift from the Department," said Councillor Villena. In the case of registering a dog considered a potentially dangerous breed, in addition to the aforementioned documentation, Councillor Villena indicated that “a ‘responsible statement’ must also be provided certifying that the owner is trained to provide care to the animal and has not been sanctioned for infractions in the matter of keeping animals; a certificate of criminal record, and a psychotechnical

Census of feral cat colonies In addition, the Department of Animal Welfare of San Fulgencio has made a call for citizen collaboration to carry out a census of colonies of feral cats in the municipality. Thus, people who feed feral cat colonies are requested to send an email to avillena@ayto-sanfulgencio.es, indicating their name and surname, email and contact number, location of the colony and the number of animals. The town hall wants to be able to locate and monitor each of the feral cat colonies "with the aim of gradually controlling the population of these colonies through the CES program of capture, sterilization and release."

Home Covid tests No bank in pharmacies merger midDecember Home testing kits for Covid-19 are about to hit high-street pharmacies in Spain for the much-more-affordable price of €25.50 – a massive reduction on the cost of a PCR test, which ranges from €95 to €150 and is only available at a private clinic for those who do not have symptoms and have not been near a 'positive-testing' person. PrimaCovid tests for the antibodies IgG and IgM, which shows whether the person has the SARS-CoV-2 virus or, indeed, has ever had it. Results appear within 15 to 20 minutes and it is carried out at home by pricking a finger and taking a drop of blood. Spain's Ministry of Health says that as it has been approved by the European Union, it does not have to be signed off by the national drugs authority, the Spanish Medications and Healthcare Products Agency (AEMPS), which will allow it to hit the shelves much earlier. Any medicine which bears the 'CE' kitemark, meaning it has been given the green light by the EU, can be sold freely in pharmacies, the ministry says. The AEMPS has requested 'complementary information' about PrimaCovid, however, from its manufacturers in Switzerland, in order to review it – which

is standard procedure.

Spain’s second-largest bank BBVA and smaller rival Banco Sabadell have announced they have scrapped plans for a possible tie-up that could create the country’s largest lender.

Health Minister Salvador Illa stresses, though, that an antibody test has 'limited use' from a diagnostic point of view, and is mainly suitable for those who need to 'prove they are negative'. The distribution company in Spain, ELIX Pharma, expects it to be on sale between 10th and 15th December, with around half a million delivered over the next three months. Managing Director Fernando Díez says the recommended retail price is €25.50 – which means it may be slightly more or slightly less when it becomes available to the public – is because ELIX Pharma is 'committed to avoiding market speculation', or is focused on its being of service to the community rather than a profit-maker. The idea is that economies of scale will eventually allow the distributor to reduce the price, meaning it is expected to be cheaper within about three to four months. Unfortunately, though, it will only be available on prescription, and the criteria for GPs to prescribe it is not yet clear.

Sabadell said in a statement that it had “decided to terminate these discussions” as the two parties had failed to come up with a share exchange agreement. Banks across Europe are struggling to cope with record-low interest rates and the economic downturn sparked by the coronavirus pandemic, which has raised pressure on them to boost liquidity by selling assets or through tie-ups. BBVA posted a net loss of 15 million euros for the first nine months of 2020 while Banco Sabadell, Spain’s fifth-largest bank, saw net profit fall during the period by 74 percent to 203 million euros as it increased provisions for bad loans.

Elche mother arrested as two year old locked outside A woman has been arrested in Elche after her two-yearold son was found alone outside, wet and under a beach umbrella. The boy was found in his pyjamas, huddled under a parasol on a dog bed, soaked by the recent rain and his own urine. Local Police in Elche arrested the woman for alleged abandonment of a minor after finding her twoyear-old son locked outside on the patio in the rain. The incident occurred on November 27th at around midday when neighbours reported hearing a child crying for around an hour. Local police went to the address and heard cries coming from the ‘patio de luces’, an internal courtyard or galleria at the property. With the help of a neighbour, officers used a ladder to look over the wall and saw a young child of around two years old, huddled under a beach umbrella sitting on a dog bed. The child was soaking wet from the recent rain and had also wet himself. Officers said that the child was "clearly nervous and trembling" due to the cold, so one of the officers entered the yard to help him. Due to the child’s age, it was not possible for him to explain to police how he got there and how long he had been outside. The police officer lifted the child over the wall to his fellow officers to be cared for while he tried to access the house to establish what had happened, the fear that the adult responsible for the child had become incapacitated.

However, all the doors and windows were closed. Eventually, the officer saw through one of the exterior windows that there was a 17 year old boy asleep inside the house. When officers managed to wake the boy, the child’s brother, he said that he was not aware that the toddler had been crying, that he did not know the whereabouts of his mother, and had assumed that his father would be at home working. Officers also found that the access door to the patio was barred with furniture and the windows were closed from the inside. While the police were trying to establish the whereabouts of the parents of the two minors, the mother arrived home with another child. The woman, who explained that she had gone to the dentist and did not know what had happened in her absence, was arrested for the crime of abandonment of minors. The child was transferred to a health centre for a medical evaluation, which determined that he was in good health and was later transferred to the Provincial Care Home while his siblings were left in the care of their grandparents.

New luxury hotels for the Costa Blanca Despite the covid pandemic investment in the Costa Blanca’s tourism industry has just received a considerable boost, with the announcement that next spring, two new luxury hotels, owned by a Basque investment group, will open in La Nucia. The 5-star facilities will be managed for 25 years by the Mallorcan chain Barceló, which already has Asia Gardens and Occidental Alicante in its portfolio. In total, 242 rooms that will be added to the provincial offer and includes the new Selomar hotel La Nucia in Benidorm (272 rooms) which is planned to open in 2024 and whose remodelling works will also start next year. In Alicante, the works of another 50-room hotel, near the Town Hall owned by a promoter, are also continuing at a good pace, and an investment of seven million euros has also been announced through the transformation of the old ‘Generali’ building into a luxury hotel. The future of the old Ideal Cinema, which is also destined to become a hotel, is still pending.

Gaspar Sáez, regional director in Andalusia and the Valencian Community of the Barcelo group, highlights that all the indicators point to a recovery in tourism from June next year, "with precautions but without living in hotels as if they were hospitals,"

he points out the regional director of Barceló for the Valencian Community and Andalusia. The hotels in La Nucía, owned by a private investor who is investing more than 40 million euros, are being built under different concepts. One is a 94room complex focused on sports tourism (teams), long stays and work meetings. The other located 250 meters away and to be called Barceló Hills, a 5-star establishment with 148 rooms. "We are optimistic that

recovery may be a reality as of next spring, and for Barceló the province has great appeal as demonstrated by the opening of Occidental Alicante in June," said Gaspar Sáez. In this hotel, 1.2 million euros were invested in the internal reform of the old establishment during six months of works. March 2021, is the scheduled opening of the Barceló La Nucía Hills, an aparthotel with 94 rooms and in May the Barceló la Nucía Palms, with 148 rooms. The developer Corisa, plans to open its 50-room luxury hotel, a few meters from the Amérigo, next summer. The hotel will also occupy another building annexed to the one on Altamira Street. The building, at number 19, belonged to the Montesinos family, and was always a residential building and on its ground floor was the Just Furniture Store, one of the shops that are part of the history of the city. On 31st July, 1943, the building was one of the most affected by the El Gato armoury explosion.

Spanish stock market sees 'biggest rise in history' Spain’s stock market has experienced its best month in history, closing November with a record increase, according to market data. The Bolsa, as the national share price index is known in Spain, soared by 25.18 percent between 00.01 on 1st November and 23.59 on 30th November, a rise never seen before. Rocketing share values have been largely driven by pharmaceutical laboratories as market speculators invest heavily in them ahead of the release of the

imminent Covid-19 vaccines. The increase was tempered slightly by a 1.39 percent shrinkage at opening on the last day of the month leaving it on 8,100 points, pulled down by the fall of Wall Street and the petroleum industry and losses suffered by the banks. Spain's main share price indicator and list of its top 35 companies by capital, the IBEX-35, dropped by 113.8 points, or 1.39 percent, to 8,076.9, with an accumulated annual decrease of 15.42 percent.

A fall of over 1 percent in Wall Street at the last minute, and a reduction of 1.5 percent in Brent crude oil prices to US$47.50 per barrel had a knock-on effect on the IBEX-35 and the Bolsa, explain analysts. The 'big six' in the IBEX-35 all experienced reductions in November – Repsol at 5.04 percent, Telefónica 2.11 percent, Banco Santander 1.93 percent, Inditex clothing empire at 1.52 percent, BBVA bank at 0.71 percent, and Iberdrola utility board at 0.22 percent.

Madrid honours Rafael Nadal Top tennis star Rafael Nadal has been awarded the greatest distinction possible in the Greater Madrid region in recognition of not only his sporting achievements, but his overall attitude to his career – one that is often upheld as an example for future generations of players. The Gran Cruz Dos de Mayo, or 'Great Cross of the Order of May 2', is the highest award ever granted by the region which is home to Spain's capital city and is presented to individuals who 'display exemplary conduct', 'outstanding public service', or both.

In the case of Rafa Nadal, his eponymous charitable foundation in his home town of Manacor – run by his mother Ana Parera and project-managed by his wife Mery Perelló – helps fund and provide everything from drop-in centres, sports lessons and tablets with built-in internet for children from deprived backgrounds through to supporting flood victims; in fact, the former ATP world number one was seen bailing out buildings and scooping up mud after last year’s DANA left his native island awash one winter, and opened his sports academy as emergency overnight accommodation for evacuated

residents. Regional president of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso said the 20times Grand Slam winner is 'a great example' to the public, especially youngsters, because of the 'exceptionally high standards' he demands from himself, and that he 'never shirks his responsibilities, looks for excuses or blames others'. During his 'thank-you' speech, Nadal said he had 'always felt very close to' Madrid, a city and region where he 'always received special affection' and had spent 'unforgettable moments', both personally and professionally.

Shop Local

SHOP LOCAL • When you shop local, you create job stability for current working citizens in your community, as well as opening the door for more local hiring opportunities.

In early September the Costa Blanca People was the first English language newspaper in Spain to launch a ‘Shop Local’ campaign, in an effort to empower local businesses, and encourage locals to buy, eat and enjoy locally rather than online. We believe that we as a community can come together, even in some small way, to make a difference to the local economy by fuelling local support. In terms of the campaign itself, we do not charge businesses to participate as it is open to everyone, whether or not you advertise with us. Supporting the local small business economy is never more important than at Christmas time when many small retailers rely on festive revenue to establish themselves for the year to come. According to studies, when you shop local, approximately 48% of the cost of your purchase is recirculated back into the local economy. When you shop at a chain store, that number drops to only 14%. Instead of taking your hard-earned cash to a multi million euro chain store, think about how beneficial it would be to invest your Christmas spending money in your local economy and help support a small business owner's family. There’s no denying that summer has been difficult for small business owners – while many were still reeling from lockdown, further restrictions made doing business harder than ever. However, it is our hope that together, the local community can help sustain the local economy through the Christmas season. If you’re not already convinced, here are a few of our favourite reasons to shop local this Christmas....

• Good customer service can be hard to find (especially at large chain stores where often employees are more interested in talking to each other or on the phone than ringing up your purchases or helping you find what you need). Some of the biggest perks of shopping local are the personalized customer service and the unique, hand-crafted items you come across. Small business owners don't build their own business from scratch just for kicks - they do it because they are passionate about keeping their products and services in their community. • When you order from a small local business, somebody somewhere does a little happy dance (...ok so we saw that one on Facebook, but you get the idea – you’re directly impacting someone’s happiness). • You’re more likely to find unique, personalised Christmas gifts from local independent shops. • Almost half of small business owners say that if everyone in their local community just spent €6 (£5) extra per week with small businesses it would help to keep them open in the long term, according to The Independent. We know that with social distancing restrictions still in place, online shopping will continue to be a major trend in the retail sector throughout the Christmas season, but consumers themselves are starting to indicate a desire to shop locally both online and in-store. In fact, 21% of UK shoppers think it is unlikely they will venture onto the high street for gift shopping this year and 32% prefer to shop in local stores to avoid large crowds. Marketplaces like Amazon and eBay continue to be very relevant for consumers, particularly in the run up to Christmas as they search for gift ideas. According to advertising agency Rakuten, 48% of UK shoppers are now using online marketplaces as the primary source of inspiration during peak shopping, while 46% take into account referrals from friends and family.

Tips for successful Local Christmas Shopping ASK FOR RECOMMENDATIONS: The majority of towns and villages have community pages set up on Facebook. Asking about small businesses, gift recommendations or where to shop on your local Facebook page means you’ll have a ton of hot tips on where to shop in your local area. VISIT A VIRUTAL CHRISTMAS FAIR: Many of the traditional Christmas Fairs in the UK and Ireland have moved online this year. Give your area a google and see if there are any virtual fairs set up. And, if there aren’t any, why not consider setting one up yourself? It’s a great way to support local businesses and small local shops – as well as a great way to rally some community spirit, too. SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL BUTCHER: Support your local butcher or delicatessen. When it comes to sourcing your traditional roast dinner, it’s all too easy to head to one of the big supermarkets. Don’t forget about local independent butchers and delis: from fresh fruit and vegetables, to delicious cakes and pastries, to the roast turkey or ham itself, many allow you to place orders well in advance – and there are usually plenty of bargains to be found, too. A quick look around our local Facebook groups here on the Southern Costa Blanca has revealed that many small butchers are putting together Christmas Packs so you’ll get a great bargain too! ASK FOR A VOUCHER: If you can’t find the perfect gift, why not consider asking your small local business to make a voucher for you to give as a gift. This way, you can give the gift of a

beautiful blowdry, a manicure or massage, clothing, a facial treatment...the possibilities are endless. If it’s somewhere you usually shop, why not ask if they offer gift vouchers. It’s a one-size-fits-all gift! How can local businesses get involved? Display a Shop Local Christmas poster to promote your local business and neighbourhood so residents invest in the local economy by shopping locally. Collect a free poster from our office or, email us and we will send you a copy to print for yourself. Alternatively, go to our website to download a free copy. Use our Shop Local Shop on your website, email signature and social media to promote the campaign. Feel free to copy the logo from our website or social media, or email us and we will send you a copy. Buy locally from other businesses when purchasing goods and services for your business. Let your customers know you are open along with promoting business offers, discounts and opening hours.

Will the campaign make a difference? We certainly hope so! Sometimes, all it takes is a reminder to make buyers pause to think twice about whether to buy online or locally. If we can all get on board, and become our own advocates - ambassadors for the local economy if you like – together, we can keep our local economy, and all of our livelihoods, afloat. Don’t forget, if you have an offer or special deal to entice new business, let us help you shout about it! Tag us in your social media posts promoting your deals or offers and we’d love to share them to our followers! Advocates We are looking for advocates for our Shop Local campaign. To get involved, all you need to do is display the campaign poster in your business and social media. Use the hashtag #CBPShopLocal and tag us in your posts so we can share your business with our followers – this applies to all local businesses, not just those who currently advertise with us. Together, we can ensure that our local economy not only survives this Christmas, but thrives.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP After approving the Pfizer vaccine, the UK is gearing up for a rollout as early as next week. Optimism is the word of the day for investors and financiers, with the government aiming for a return to normal by spring 2021. In other news, the Brexit negotiations seem set to continue for another week at least. With less than 30 days to go until the deadline, midweek doubt over whether a deal will be agreed sent the pound lower against the euro. While Thursday evening saw sterling reclaim some of its losses, it was a short-lived movement as both parties appeared to confirm the deadlock was yet to be broken. Despite enjoying gains on the underperforming US dollar, sterling ended the week down on the euro. Surprisingly, UK money and credit data was significant enough to move the pound. Net lending was £4.3 billion in October, in line with the trend before the pandemic, while consumer credit continued its decline for a second month. The highlight, however, was mortgage approvals, which made the difference at 97.5k, a record high not seen since prior to the 2008 global financial crisis. On the retail front, there were a number of casualties this week, which included Debenhams, Topshop andBonmarché. For those still trading, however, footfall jumped 85% on last week as the second lockdown ended and shoppers returned to the high street in time for Christmas.

EURO The euro emerged from this week victorious, beating sterling, the US and Canadian dollars and the antipodeans. Shrugging off last week’s economic woes, the single currency profited from a weak performance from the US dollar and from a hardline stance over Brexit negotiations making the pound suffer. With Chief Negotiator Michel Barnier’s declaration that a deal is “hanging in the balance”, it was enough to dissuade investors from the appeal of sterling and dampen hopes that a deal was right around the corner. Data-wise, it was a mixed bag for the Eurozone. The European Commission noted that economic sentiment was “markedly down” in November, falling five points to -17.3. In addition, consumer confidence dropped two points to -17.6 and industrial confidence was a point lower at -10.1. While slight improvements were seen in business climate (up from -0.73 to -0.63), these were immediately offset by a decline in economic sentiment (falling three and a half points to 87.6). European HICP data put inflation at -0.9% in Spain, 0% in Italy and -0.7% in Germany. However none of this had much of an impact, while German factory orders rising in October for the sixth month in a row, up 2.9% MoM, helped keep things afloat.

Carols in the Theatre This year’s Carols in the Square event has changed format and venue in order that it can still go ahead. Jean Paul Mulero from the foreigner’s office in Torrevieja told the Costa Blanca People, “The Mayor knows how important this event is to the international community so has insisted that we pull out all the stops to make sure that the event can go ahead in a safe and controlled setting.” With this in mind, the town hall has facilitated the use of the Municipal Theatre where the event will take place on Monday 14th December at 6.30pm. The evening will be compered by Keith Nicol and will feature music by the members of the RBL band, as well as the ASILA choir and the acclaimed vocal group Sette Voci, a phenomenally talented septet. There will be strict controls in place to ensure the safety of all participants and attendees – for example, temperature control and hand sanitising at the entrance, distanced seating

Carols in the Square 2019

arrangements and masks to be worn at all times. Numbers are limited to 306 in order to ensure that seating is appropriately distanced. Members of the same household are allowed to sit together in groups of two. Tickets are absolutely free of charge and can be obtained from the Pangea office, or by calling Jean Paul Mulero on 619 93 05 05. You can also get tickets from the Costa Blanca People (email us and let us know how many tickets you would like and we will arrange that they are reserved for you) or from David Last, the Musical Director of the RBL band on 638 108 078. David Last, together with Jean Paul Mulero and professional musician Sam Arthur have been working night and day to ensure the event goes ahead and that all the necessary permissions and protocols are in place to guarantee that this important festive event can still be celebrated under the current circumstances.

Audience members are encouraged to wear something Christmassy and to ensure everyone has a chance to sing along to all the Christmas Carols, the Costa Blanca People will be providing songsheets to everyone on the night – so there’s no excuse not to join in! There will also be a chance to make a monetary donation to help families in need this Christmas. Don’t forget that tickets (for free) are essential as numbers need to be controlled. For families, don’t forget that seating is in twos so with a family of four, mum might have to sit with one child and dad with the other. Either way, it’s a great chance for a bit of free, festive fun for all the family and a chance to don the santa hats, Christmas jumpers and sparkly earrings at least once this festive season. For more information, call Jean Paul Mulero on 619 93 05 05 or call in at the Pangea office (the small blue tourist office near the seafront in Torrevieja).

Are superfoods a waste of money? Do we need to be spending massive amounts of money on superfoods, powders and supplements? Many regular foods found easily at any supermarket have amazing nutritional properties and health benefits, and can be put under the term ‘superfood’ for their incredible impact on our health. These include dark leafy greens, berries, green tea, pulses/legumes, raw nuts and seeds, garlic, ginger, turmeric, avocado, wild salmon, mushrooms, fermented foods, seaweed and many others. These foods are high in antioxidants, have dense amounts of important micronutrients and phytonutrients to support health, and are a vital part of a healthy diet. However due to soil degradation and depletion from intensive modern farming, the soil our produce is grown in contains far fewer nutrients than it used to. As a result there may be fewer nutrients, vitamins and minerals in the fruits and vegetables coming from the soil. So a carrot pulled out of the ground today has fewer nutrients than it did fifty years ago.

these losses will have nearly doubled by today. It has been shown that soils on organic farms with regenerative farming methods have much high levels of nutrients and are therefore passing this on to the vegetables that grow there. This is another reason why it is important to consume organic produce wherever possible aside from the chemical fertilisers and pesticides used in conventional farming. Another factor contributing to this problem is that nutrient levels decrease every day after harvest and before getting to our plates. Our modern food system means that we are often eating fruits and vegetables that have travelled hundreds or even thousands of miles and may have

been picked out of the ground a week or two before it gets into your shopping bag, and then how long do they sit the fridge before we eat them? The modern world is bombarding us with pollution and chemicals at every turn. This puts our body under greater stress and results in the need for even more nutrition to fight the adverse effects of environmental pollutants and stresses of our modern lives. So although it’s best to receive as many nutrients as possible from whole food sources, we just might not be getting enough of the good stuff to really cover all our bases with food alone. To support our diets, health and busy modern lives, it can be beneficial to supplement with some additional superfoods to bridge the

gap in nutrients and cover all the bases. However just one stroll around a health food store or certain corners of the internet can quickly make things seem overwhelming. Experts recommend: For everyone: A good quality greens powder: look for a mix of spirulina, chlorella, wheatgrass, barley grass and moringa For immunity: Echinacea, rhodiola, rosehip, elderberry, reishi and astragalus For inflammation: Turmeric, ginger, collagen, biotin, selenium, grape skin extract, blueberry, raspberry, cranberry and pomegranate extracts, acai berry For

workout

recovery:

MSM,

magnesium, L-Glutamine, L-CArnetine, Beetroot powder For hormone balance: Maca, lucuma, ashwaganda, chasteberry, milk thistle, fenugreek, ginseng, saw palmetto It is also important to be aware of the quality and provenance of the products you’re consuming, as many can be contaminated or packed with additional ingredients that you don’t want. When buying supplements check the ingredients and ensure it is 100 percent the nutrient you are buying with no added preservatives, stabilisers or fillers. Look at the quality of packaging. As with fresh produce, the nutrition content of supplements also decreases with time so ensuring packaging that is airtight and light protected is crucial. The best is aluminium pouches or vacuum sealed dark glass jars. So basically, if you can’t find out anything on the company’s website about their quality standards and business practices, testing and producers, stay well away. There may be a lot of superfoods out there that are not worth the hype and if not produced responsibly might do more harm than good. But starting with adding a greens powder to your routine is a great simple way to add some extra goodness to your diet, and pretty much everyone can benefit from a high quality green blend. We should all be trying to get as much nutrition as possible from organic whole foods, but we also may need to give our diets a little boost with some high quality superfoods to help us reach ultimate health and wellbeing.

Research into nutrient value of foods conducted by the British Food Journal between 1930 and 1980 found that in twenty common vegetables there was a 19 percent reduction in calcium content, 22 percent reduction in iron content and 14 percent reduction in potassium content as well as reduced levels of vitamin A and C, magnesium, zinc, copper, thiamine, riboflavin and niacin. These are significant reductions in a relatively short period of time and if this degradation continues at the same rate,

This Week´s Movie Picks Pearl Harbor

Arthur Christmas

Sunday 13th December – Channel 5, 6.45 pm

Saturday 12th December – ITV2, 5.40 pm This movie reveals the incredible, neverbefore seen answer to every child's question: "So how does Santa deliver all those presents in one night?" The answer: Santa's (Jim Broadbent's) exhilarating, ultrahigh-tech operation hidden beneath the North Pole. But at the center of this movie is a story about a family in a state of comic dysfunction and an unlikely hero, Arthur (James McAvoy), with an urgent mission that must be completed before Christmas morning dawns.

Pearl Harbor is a classic tale of romance set during a war that complicates everything. It all starts when childhood friends Rafe and Danny become Army Air Corps pilots and meet Evelyn, a Navy nurse. Rafe falls head over heels and he and Evelyn and Rafe hook up. Then Rafe volunteers to go fight in Britain, and Evelyn and Danny get transferred to Pearl Harbor. While Rafe is off fighting, suddenly one morning comes the air raid we now know as "Pearl Harbor."

Stuffing Balls

Spiced Parsnip Soup Ingredients 1/2 tsp cumin 1/2 tsp coriander 1/2 tsp cardamom seeds 2 tbs olive oil 40g unsalted butter 1 onion, chopped 1 garlic clove, chopped 3cm piece ginger, grated 1/2 tsp ground turmeric 1/2 tsp garam masala 2 Granny Smith apples 500g parsnips, peeled, chopped 3 cups (750ml) Massel Chicken Style Liquid Stock 1 tbs caster sugar Creme fraiche, to serve Chopped flat-leaf parsley leaves, to serve

Method 1.Toast cumin, coriander and cardamom in a dry frypan over medium heat for 1 minute or until fragrant. Transfer to a mortar and pestle and grind to a powder. Set aside. 2.Heat 1 tbs oil and 20g butter in a pan over medium-low heat. Cook onion with 1/4 tsp salt for 4-5 minutes, until softened. Add garlic, ginger, turmeric, garam marsala and ground spices, and cook for 1 minute or until fragrant. Peel, core and roughly chop one apple and add to pan with parsnip, stock and 1/2 cup (125ml) water. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low. Cook, uncovered, for 40-45 minutes until parsnips are very tender. Remove from heat, cool slightly, then transfer to a blender and whiz until smooth. Return to pan. Remove from heat and keep warm.

Ingredients 1 tbs olive oil 1 small red onion, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 2½ cups stale white breadcrumbs ⅓ cups dried cranberries, chopped ⅓ cup dried apricots, chopped 1 egg, lightly beaten 1 tbs chopped parsley 50g butter, melted Method 1.Preheat oven to 200°C. Heat oil in a nonstick frypan over medium-high heat. Add onion and garlic. Cook, stirring, for 3 minutes or until soft. Transfer to a bowl. Add

Method 1.To make the glaze, place sugar, spices and 1 tablespoon of water in a large fry pan over high heat. Swirl pan occasionally until bubbling and golden. Add pineapple pieces and vinegar and cook for 6 minutes, turning pineapple pieces occasionally, until pineapple is golden and a glaze has formed from the fruit juices. Set aside to cool slightly.

2.Preheat oven to 180C. Line a rack with bay leaves. Using a small sharp knife, cut around ham shank in a zigzag pattern, then carefully run knife under skin, around the edge of the ham. 3.Gently lift off skin in 1 piece by running your fingers between the rind and the fat. Discard skin, then score fat in parallel lines, 1cm apart. Baste fat with some of the glaze and place ham on the rack and set in a large roasting pan. 4.Roast ham, basting with remaining glaze every 20 minutes, for 2 ½ hours or until caramelised. Add the pineapple pieces in the last 30 minutes. Slice and serve with caramelised pineapple.

breadcrumbs, cranberry, apricot, egg, parsley and butter. Season with salt and pepper. Mix well to combine. 2.Shape mixture into 16 balls. Place on a tray lined with baking paper. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until browned. Serve.

Bourbon and Pineapple Glazed Ham Ingredients 2/3 cup brown sugar 6 cloves 6 bay leaves 1 pineapple, core removed, sliced 2 tbs chardonnay vinegar ½ bunch bay leaves 1 8kg smoked ham

www.costablancapeople.com

Ingredients 1 apple, grated, excess water squeezed out 100g unsalted butter, melted 100g brown sugar 100g drained morello cherries in juice (see notes), finely chopped 100g slivered almonds 100g candied peel, finely chopped 100g each currants, seedless raisins and sultanas 2 teaspoons finely grated lemon zest, plus 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 teaspoon mixed spice 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon grated nutmeg 100ml brandy Icing sugar, to serve Pastry 2 2/3 cups (400g) plain flour, sifted 200g chilled unsalted butter, chopped 1 egg yolk, beaten with 2 teaspoons milk Method 1. You should get the pre-soaking

ingredients ready the night before you make the cake. Put all the fruits in a bowl and mix them with the brandy, cover with a cloth and leave them to soak for a minimum of 12 hours. 2. When you’re ready to cook the cake, pre-heat the oven to 140°C conventional oven, gas mark 1. Now all you do is sift the flour, salt and spices into a very large roomy mixing bowl then add the sugar, eggs, treacle (warm it a little first to make it easier) and butter and beat with an electric hand whisk until everything is smooth and fluffy. Now gradually fold in the pre-soaked fruit mixture, chopped nuts and finally the grated lemon and orange zests. 3. Next, using a large kitchen spoon, transfer the cake mixture into the prepared tin, spread it out evenly with the back of the spoon and, if you don’t intend to decorate the cake with marzipan and icing, lightly drop the blanched almonds in circles over the surface. 4. Finally take a double square of baking parchment with a 50p-sized hole in the centre (for extra protection during the cooking) and place this not on top of the mixture itself but on the rim of the brown paper. Bake the cake on the lowest shelf of the oven for 4 hours until it feels springy in the centre when lightly touched. Sometimes it can take 30-45 minutes longer than this, but in any case don’t look at it for 4 hours. Cool the cake for 30 minutes in the tin, then remove it to a wire rack to finish cooling. When it’s cold, ‘feed’ the cake by making small holes in the top and bottom with a cocktail stick and spooning in a couple of tablespoons of Armagnac or brandy, then wrap it in parchment-lined foil and store in an airtight tin. You can feed it again at odd intervals up until Christmas.

Crumpet slippers Warburtons crumpets are an iconic brunch staple, much-loved for decades and they have now created the perfect Chritmas gift...crumpet slippers! The Warburtons Crumpet Slippers, which are available to buy online are sumptuously soft and feature a mouthwatering design, in a shape inspired by the circular goodness of the brand’s iconic crumpet. And more than just keeping your toes toastie (or should that be ‘crumpetie’?), for every pair of slippers purchased, the equivalent of 64 meals will be donated to those most in need during this festive period; in total, the proceeds from the campaign will enable charity, FareShare, to distribute over 85,000 free meals. Jonathan Warburton, Chairman at Warburtons says: “This year has been incredibly challenging for many families and communities across the country, both financially and from a healthperspective. That’s why we have worked hard to ensure we can feed the nation, both by getting product onto shelves but also by supporting food banks, community groups and breakfast clubs across the country.

“It was reflecting on this achievement that we realised we needed to find a festive way to finish the year, not only putting a smile on the faces of loved ones on Christmas Day, but also giving back to the loyal crumpet lovers who ensure we can donate as much as we have. “As we enter some of the toughest months for those in need, FareShare’s incredible work fighting hunger was an obvious partner and we are proud to be able to donate all sale proceeds from the slippers to such a worthy cause.” Linsay Boswell, CEO at FareShare says: “We are delighted that Warburtons have chosen to donate sales of their festive crumpet slippers to FareShare to help us feed families across the UK this winter. “Getting good, nutritious food to vulnerable people has never been more vitally important than it is now, and this donation will make a big difference to the communities we support. Each pair of slippers sold will help FareShare provide 64 meals and we are so grateful to Warburtons for their support.” The limited-edition slippers will set you back £19.99 (incl. delivery), and are available in sizes XS-L.

Spanish wine company sends free cardboard cutouts of loved ones

www.costablancapeople.com

Homemade Bailey’s floods internet Christmas is less than one month away and we're beyond ready to drink litres and litres of Baileys (responsibly of course) for the foreseeable future. But there's only one problem. That would cost us a fortune. So, the next best thing is, of course, to make it yourself and the internet and social media sites have been teeming with recipes. Luckily, with just a few simple ingredients, you will be well on your way to making the most delicious Baileys you've ever had...or so it is claimed.

warming way to spend the Christmas party season with your friends. For a limited time every bottle of Campo Viejo Rioja Tempranillo or Campo Viejo ViuraTempranillo Blanco bought from Shareawine.com will come with a free, life-size cardboard cut-out of a friend or family member. You just have to supply the picture. The wine costs £15 including nationwide delivery (and your cardboard pal), so would make a great Christmas gift. You could even send your loved ones a cut-out of yourself. Lucy Bearman, Brand Director from Campo Viejo said in the press release: "For almost a year we’ve all been stuck at home missing our friends and family and whilst we’re glad everyone has been

abiding by the rules, it hasn’t been fun. "We want to bring a little bit of joy to people as Christmas gets closer. Having your best friend round for a glass of Campo Viejo wine is the perfect antidote to a glum weekend stuck at home!" A recent survey by Campo Viejo found 26 percent of people asked said they’ve leaned on friends, family and neighbours more this year than before, and 27 percent said they've spent more time with friends despite being apart. We've all really managed to be there for each other in new and imaginative ways this year and this is a light-hearted way to honour that. Both silly and brilliant, it will be sure to put a smile on someone's face all through the festive season.

Here's what you need: Half a bottle of whisky 6 eggs Tin of condensed milk Tin of evaporated milk 1 tsp of vanilla essence 1 tsp coffee or 1 tbsp of hot chocolate powder And it couldn't be easier to make. Simply place all the ingredients in a blender, give them a whiz, chill in the fridge and serve over ice. Et voila! homemade Baileys for days. You may find that your homemade bottles don’t last very long, but it will keep for at least a week in the fridge. If you fancy switching things up, you can swap the vanilla essence with orange essence if you wish, and you can also pick between coffee and hot chocolate powder. Well, it looks like we know what you'll be doing for the rest of the afternoon...

10 simple steps to a more sustainable lifestyle

Sarah & Steph

As awareness continues to grow around the importance of reducing our impact on the planet, it can be hard to know where to start and overwhelm can cause people to lose hope. To help people to see that it doesn’t have to be difficult or complicated to start to make a positive change, the team at Eco Passion have produced a free guide, with a ten-step plan to leading a more sustainable lifestyle. Founder Sarah Spencer explains, “We all know we should be more eco-friendly, but speaking to hundreds of people about their lifestyle and their environmental impact it became clear to me that many like to have guidance on where to start. I strongly believe that small

changes, made by large numbers, will be essential to turning the tide and creating real change for our planet. So, this guide offers some very simple changes that people can make and the reasons why they are important to our planet. These can include simply stopping buying bottled water and taking reusable bags to the shops, reducing meat intake and recycling. All easy changes to incorporate into our modern lifestyle, and if adopted by hundreds of thousands of people, they will not only make a difference to the waste we’re producing and the resources we’re consuming but also send a message to the corporate giants that our consumer habits are changing.”

The guide is available in English and Spanish and includes 10-steps to take to becoming more eco-friendly and a checklist to chart your progress and see how far you’ve come. The Eco Passion team encourage you to work through the steps at your own pace and feel proud of each achievement along the way. Store cupboard staples A well-stocked pantry allows you to pull together healthy meals in a hurry and makes it much easier to stick to eating healthily. We have flipped through the scientific journals to find the foods with the most impressive health benefits. Some items you may already have, while others you'll want to add to your list next time you head to the shops. Apple Cider Vinegar If you only buy one vinegar, make it this one. Apple cider vinegar can not only be used to whip up healthy, fat-fighting marinades and homemade salad dressings, but it also has been linked to benefits such as blood sugar regulation, weight loss, and hunger suppression. Olive Oil This Mediterranean diet staple can be used in place of butter, but that's not the only benefit. This minimally-processed cooking oil is rich in antiinflammatory polyphenols, is linked to improving heart health, and decreasing inflammation linked to arthritis. Mustard Thanks to the capsaicin and phytochemicals responsible for giving the mustard its distinct flavour, eating just one teaspoon of the stuff can boost your calorie-burning furnace by up to 25 percent for several hours after you consume it. Cinnamon Because this sweet spice improves insulin sensitivity, when you consume it along with something sweet, less of the sugar you eat is stored as fat. It's also shown to enhance cognitive processing and brain function. Sprinkle it into coffee, pancakes, chili, oats or Greek yogurt. Chilli Powder Studies suggest that this redhot spice can do everything from lower blood pressure to clear up sinus inflammation. But fiery capsaicin, the compound that

gives chillies their kick, is best known for its ability to alter key proteins found in fat. After we eat it, scientists say, it boosts metabolic rate and decreases appetite, aiding weight loss. Black Pepper Just about every savoury recipe calls for pepper, so it's a good idea to keep it on hand. Recent animal studies also suggest that piperine, a powerful black pepper compound, may be able to decrease inflammation and stop the formation of new fat cells, resulting in less body fat and lower cholesterol levels. Canned Tuna Even if you don't eat it regularly, tuna is a great protein staple to keep stocked. When you realise you've run out of fresh chicken breasts and you're in need of a post-workout hit of protein, you'll be glad it's there. Just don't douse it with mayo if weight loss is your goal. Eat it plain or mix it with a bit of black pepper and balsamic vinegar if you need a bit of flavour. Walnuts If you only have room in your budget for one type of nut, make it a walnut. Thanks to its antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids, this brain-shaped tree nut can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease. In fact, consuming just one ounce of walnuts five times a week can slash heart disease risk by nearly 40 percent, studies show. It's also rich in fibre and protein, so munching on walnuts can help quell hunger pangs and promote a healthy weight. Dark Chocolate In addition to making our tastebuds sing, dark chocolate can also zap excess body fat and whittle the waistline when eaten in moderation. Keep a bar with at least 70 percent cacao in your kitchen and break off a bite whenever the craving for something sweet strikes. Along with some fresh fruit, dark

chocolate shavings also make a great addition to overnight oats and Greek yogurt. Quinoa This ancient grain is packed with plant-based protein and loaded with fibre, a nutrient that aids blood sugar control. Because it's also a complete protein (meaning it contains all nine essential amino acids), it's also one of the best sources of plant protein out there. Use it instead of white rice as a side dish or whip up one of our favourite quinoa recipes for weight loss. Sprouted Grain Bread This nutrient-dense loaf is overflowing with good-for-you sprouted grains and seeds like barley and millet, and fibre and folate-filled lentils. It also has four to six grams of protein per slice, making it a better all around pick than most other breads on the supermarket shelf. Steel Cut Oatmeal Leave the cold cereals on the shelf and stock up on this more filling, versatile alternative. Because it's high in fibre and protein but low in sugar researchers say it can ward off hunger far longer than ready-toeat breakfast cereal, and studies also suggest that eating one cup of cooked oatmeal two to four times a week can lower the risk of type 2 diabetes by 16 percent! Use the grain to make overnight oats or pulse into flour for baked goods. Beans Beans are a great source of vegan protein and one of the best high-fibre foods, two nutrients that can ward off high cholesterol and constipation and help you stay slim. Plus, they can be added to rice, salads and soups, or used to make a homemade dip. In fact, the more you eat them (experts say we should consume up to three cups a week), the less likely you are to experience belly trouble.

Spain goes crazy for Lidl black dress

Every woman needs a little black dress in her winter wardrobe, but a Lidl black dress? The women of Spain have gone crazy for Lidl’s latest fashion offering with the sparkling black party dress sold out across the country. The party dress sold out in all sizes in a matter of hours and priced at just €11.99, it is any wonder? Since its sell out coloured trainers hit stores briefly in October before being snapped up in less than three hours, Lidl has been making its mark in the

fashion world. The surprising success saw the Lidl branded footwear (coloured in the corporate colours of the supermarket chain, blue yellow and red, and with the company logo on the tongue of the shoe) sell out in record time only to appear on resale sites at vastly inflated prices. The RRP was €19.99 but pairs were swapping hands for up to €200 online. It seems the German budget supermarket has done it again with a short hemmed, long

sleeved, sequinned sweater dress that costs less than a nice lunch. And, although the dress has not appeared on selling platforms such as Ebay or Wallapop, at least for the moment, buyers will have to search several Lidl stores to find one. The fine knit dress is out of stock on the Lidl website in all sizes. Fashion buyers at Lidl have not commented on possible reruns of the garment, so if you want to get yours, you will have to put in the work to find it.

German Covid experiment concert results Researchers who staged an experimental concert in Germany found that adequate ventilation and hygiene precautions greatly lowered the risk of spreading Covid-19 at large gatherings. Team of scientists from three universities asked pop singer Tim Bendzko to stage a live show at an arena in Leipzig, Germany. Researchers studied the evolution of Covid-19 among concert goers. The results showed that the risk of

exposure to aerosol droplets increased substantially when the venue had a poor ventilation system or failed to implement precautions. The team found that adequate ventilation and hygiene precautions could significantly reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19 at mass gatherings. All of the involved staff and participants tested negative for the disease within 48 hours ahead of the event and wore N95 masks and contact tracing devices throughout the concert. The researchers ran three different test concert scenarios over the course of the day. The first performance had no physical distancing restrictions or other precautions that have since become common at gatherings during the pandemic. The second performance included moderate precautions, like double the number of entrances to reduce crowding and checkerboard pattern seating that left every other seat empty and kept people distant. The researchers added even more restrictions to the third concert, quadrupling the number of entrances typically used at the venue and seating people in pairs, with about 5 feet of distance between each couple. The results showed that a seated indoor concert with strict hygiene precautions, like masks and physical distancing, and good ventilation had “minimal effects” on the overall number of infections that were likely to occur in the community. The researchers also found that the risk of potential exposure to aerosol droplets, which can contain the virus that causes COVID-19, increased substantially when the venue had a poor ventilation system or failed to implement precautions.

Can't shake the gloom I doubt I am not the only one right now to be feeling gloomy about Christmas approaching. When Lockdown first happened, I thought it would only be a couple of weeks before we'd all be back to normal. However, I got through the months of isolation living alone, and didn't feel too bad about it before we were plunged into restriction again. Now with Christmas approaching I am beginning to feel quite melancholy and cannot seem to shake off the gloominess. I know we in Spain are in a much better situation restriction-wise, and the crisis at home for my family is much much worse. And of course there are people still dying of this disease, and we must not forget that we are still all at risk. Normally I would have flown back home to stay with my family over Christmas, but this is not to be this year. Any suggestions on how to cope? At least we in Spain have our lovely outdoor life to embrace. We are still able to visit bar and restaurants, however I would advise that we all sit outdoors because we are hearing stories of folk picking up the virus having been indoors with other patrons. I believe walking clubs are still operating so why not go along, and why not suggest to friends that you meet on the beach for Christmas Day this year for a picnic. Facetime with family back home - we've all got to get on with it this year haven’t we, and those of us who lived through the war know to adopt a hardy attitude and just forge ahead with what we CAN do. We will beat this. Chins up! WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. A PSEUDONYM WILL BE USED IF YOU WISH. SARA READS ALL LETTERS AND CAN GIVE A PERSONAL REPLY. Traffic fines should fund BMW 2 Series Coupe ramps up for 2021 launch driving lessons The money raised through traffic fines should be used to pay for driving lessons and tests for young people from hard-pressed families, says left-wing Podemos. The party governing in coalition with the socialists (PSOE) says that although public transport passes for free or at a discounted rate are available for people with very low incomes, outside of large cities, such methods of transport can be virtually non-existent. And without being able to drive, young adults are unable to apply for jobs. In Spain lessons are only legally permitted through an accredited driving school, which is usually state-run. It is against the law for a parent or other adult to take a learner out in their own car with L-plates, even off-road. Tests are expensive for families struggling to make ends meet, and an estimated 73 percent of candidates will fail their first one at least. Whilst in Spain, the 'rush' to take driving lessons on the very day young people become legally old enough is more of a 'stroll' – most youths will spend their university summer holidays taking lessons, or even leave it

until they graduate – not being able to get about could seriously hamper their chances of finding work. In Spain, lessons and tests can only be taken from the age 18 upwards, although most brandnew drivers tend to be in their early 20s. The proposal is for the under25s to be given financial help to learn to drive and get through their tests where they are 'out of work', in 'severe monetary

difficulties', or both. This help could be financed through the fines paid by drivers for speeding and other breaches of road traffic law. Podemos points out that Spain's youth unemployment rate is one of the highest in the

Eurozone, exacerbated by the pandemic. Podemos claim there is a 'Catch-22' situation, in that if youngsters do not have jobs they cannot afford driving lessons, which then limits their chances of finding a well-paid position or even a job at all. This is born out by the fact that the number of driving tests passed has dropped in the last few years and driving schools are reporting much lower takings. Rural Spain, which is struggling to hang onto inhabitants and avoid a population wipe-out – and, especially, to attract people of working and childbearing age – would benefit the most, since public transport is not only practically absent, but the nearest sources of jobs, in large towns or cities, are too far to travel to by bus or moped. Also, learning to drive a car and doing so legally would mean young adults who do not have university education or qualifications beyond compulsory schooling would be able to apply for jobs such as delivery driving, or train to be taxi or lorry drivers.

BMW is stepping up winter testing of the upcoming 2 Series Coupé ahead of its reintroduction next year, with everyone wanting a look at the firm's smallest twodoor model. Given the huge amount of secrecy it’s difficult to draw many conclusions beyond the overall profile being that of a classic twodoor, four-seat coupé. Visible links to the shape of the latest 4 Series are apparent, in particular the long bonnet and wide rear stance, although at the front BMW appears to have grafted the face from the 2 Series Gran Coupé onto it, rather than borrow from the controversial 4 Series. Due to be produced at the firm’s San Luis Potosí plant in Mexico, the 2 Series Coupé is known internally under the codename G42 and is scheduled for an unveiling during 2021. Significantly, the new coupé shares very little of its architecture with the 2 Series Gran Coupé as it will be rear-wheel drive. Shunning BMW’s front-driven FAAR platform, it will instead utilise an evolution of its versatile CLAR platform. As well as underpinning BMW’s largest saloons and SUVs, the architecture is also found underneath the current Z4 and its Toyota Supra sibling. Details of what will power the

new 2 Series variant at launch have yet to be confirmed, although expect to see three- and four-cylinder petrols, and possibly the return of a diesel, for the mainstream models. The full-fat M2, expected in 2022, will keep a six-cylinder powertrain. Specifically, it will use a detuned version of the S58 3.0-litre unit found in the BMW X3 M and X4 M, and soon to be offered in the latest M3 and M4. Insiders hint that the M2 will offer at least 420bhp in its standard form - a 16bhp increase over today’s M2 Competition - to

usurp the 416bhp Mercedes-AMG A45 S hot hatch. However, the CLAR platform provides the basis for a 48V electrical architecture, meaning the M2 is likely to feature mild-hybrid technology during its life cycle. As before, the M2 should also retain a manual gearbox option, along with select variants of the standard 2 Series Coupé line-up. However, there won’t be a new generation of the 2 Series Convertible alongside this as BMW looks to streamline its model portfolio and focus resources on electrification.

If you install a tiny camera on a side of your windscreen and record constantly with no help from the driver, and the camera do not obscure your vision when driving, it is LEGAL. The video can be used as evidence for accidents/incidents in a trial, and it would be very helpful if all cars would have one, then we could see the accident from different points of view and see who was the responsible easily. Nowadays there are many devices to film in public places, you have to take care what you do with the video you are recording. If you decided to publish on internet you could have problems if any of the persons who you have filmed, do not want to be published on the website. We have the example of google which have taken photos in everywhere, but it can not show people faces.

How Amazon’s ‘The Grand Tour’ Kept Motoring During Covid The Grand Tour producer Andy Wilman has revealed how Amazon’s motoring show stayed on the road during the coronavirus pandemic - despite having to cancel a major shoot in Russia and falling ill with the disease himself. The executive producer was speaking as Amazon Prime gears up to launch the next Grand Tour special, A Massive Hunt, which was filmed in Madagascar last year, but was edited at the height of the Covid-19 outbreak, during which Wilman was laid low for 10 days after contracting the illness. He delivered the episode to Amazon in early summer and it will premiere on 18th December, featuring Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May on some of the most treacherous roads they have ever encountered, in cars that had some heavy-duty modifications. Hammond, for example, replaced the wheels on his Ford Focus RS with tank tracks. But, as always with Wilman and co, they’re thinking about the next adventure and, after being forced to cancel their Russian road trip in March because of the pandemic (losing “hundreds of thousands of pounds” in the process), the motoring show stayed closer to home. The team recently wrapped a 10-day shoot in Scotland for a film that will ultimately fill the Russiashaped hole in their Amazon duties. Wilman said recording the episode

was an experience unlike any other, with the presenters and production team having to observe strict Covid safety protocols laid down by Amazon protocols that, he admitted, would usually frustrate Clarkson, Hammond, and May in any other circumstance. “Amazon has got the protocols and you’ve got to adhere to them. If you lose the money, it’s all down the drain. We were all really grown up about it,” he said. “We’re not slapdash on health and safety as we’re all still alive after 20 years, but those kinds of processes, we usually groan and roll our eyes. But we thought we’ve got to do this because if you follow them, you’ve got a chance of making it to the end.” A mobile testing unit was established to serve the production team, staffed by specially-trained medics. Or as Wilman described it, a “Scooby-Doo van with three boffins in it.” He explained: “They were really tough on us. On the third day, we started to get a bit slack and revert back to muscle memory, so I jumped in someone else’s car. The chief medic guy, tore strips off me, to bring us back into line. But it was what we needed.” Some £50,000 ($67,000) was spent on coronavirus tests, he added. They were all swabbed at the end of each day and got the results at 11PM that night. If the results were negative, they were clear to continue filming for another day. No positive test results were returned for the

main team during the shoot and Wilman said the daily dose of good news “gave us a bit of a zip.” He called the show a “rolling bubble,” which unlike some static shoots, meant producers and presenters engaged with the outside through necessities such as gas station stops. “Everything was a lot more measured and disciplined,” Wilman continued. “The sound man would put on all the nuclear Chernobyl gear before he mic-ed up the presenters, whereas normally they would be sharing a fag. It was all in the detail.” Overall, he was proud of what was captured and admitted that, in some respects, the Scotttish adventure marked a return to their Top Gear roots, when UKbased shoots were a mainstay. “Scotland was tremendous. In adversity - a slight element of backs to the wall - we’ve got a really great film. If you don’t have Madagasgar or the Mekong River… it makes you work harder. We don’t leave as much to chance, you set up more scenes and that is like going back to the old

days,” he explained. The Scotland special will premiere next year and then The Grand Tour boys have another two specials to make under their existing Amazon contracts. Wilman is exploring further UK shoots in the current pandemic climate, but is still hoping to remount the Russia special and other overseas trips. Beyond the next two films, he said there remains an appetite to continue working with Amazon. “They’ve got to want us and we’ve got to want to,” he said. “There’s still plenty of petrol left in the tank. As long as people want to watch, and as long as Jeff [Bezos] wants to go “here’s a few quid to do it,” then we’re all good to do it.”

New Year, New Rules The Spanish Government has approved a package of legal reforms that, as a whole, substantially modify road traffic legislation with the objective of generating a new model of road safety aligned with the policy of the European Union and the recommendations of the World Health Organization to reduce, over the next decade, the number of deaths and serious injuries caused by road traffic incidents by 50 percent. The changes include the draft law relating to driving licences and, in particular, the points lost for behaviours considered to be the greatest risk to road safety, and promotes the mechanism of safe driving courses as a formula to improve road training for drivers. The ultimate objective of the preliminary draft is to increase safe behaviour at the wheel, for which it includes, among others, the following measures: Increase from 3 to 6 the points to be deducted for driving while holding mobile phone devices. Increase from 3 to 4 points deducted for not using the seat belt, child restraint systems, helmet, and other protective elements. In addition, it explicitly incorporates the misuse of these elements as a cause of sanction (for example, wearing a safety helmet or seat belt without fastening it) because the negative consequences for the driver's safety are the same. It classifies as a serious offense “carrying in the vehicle” radar or cinemometer detection mechanisms, which will result in a penalty of 200 euro and the loss of 3 points. At present, only the use of these devices while driving is sanctioned, but experience has shown that, before a road control, drivers deactivate them to prevent traffic agents from being able to prove their use, so once the reform commences the mere possession is sanctionable. The reform eliminates the possibility that cars and motorcycles may exceed the speed limits on conventional roads by 20 kilometres per hour when overtaking another vehicle. The abolition of this measure, which had already been eliminated in the rest of the countries of the European Union, reinforces the message that the overtaking manoeuvre carries a risk of frontal collision. The reform also introduces the possibility of recovering 2 points of the licence for the completion of the safe driving courses certified by the General Directorate of Traffic. A ministerial order will develop the necessary requirements and the conditions that must be met. The reform unifies in two years the period that will have to pass without committing infractions to recover the initial balance of points, a period that now varies depending on the seriousness of the infraction committed. It includes a new “very serious” offence, committing driving test fraud using unauthorised intercom devices. The penalty will be 500 euro and a penalty of 6 months without being able to attend the exam. On-line access to the driver registry is provided for companies that transport people and goods so that they can find out if their workers' driving licence is valid or not. It will only be reported in red or green depending on whether it is

current or not. The draft, which has already passed the consultation and public information process, has also been reported by the Higher Council for Traffic, Road Safety and Sustainable Mobility; the Office of Coordination and Regulatory Quality; the Spanish Data Protection Agency, and the current Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda. After its approval in the first round by the Council of Ministers, the draft must now be informed by the Ministries of Finance, Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, Labour and Social Economy and Territorial Policy and Public Function. Secondly, the Council of Ministers has approved a royal decree that modifies both the General Traffic Regulations and the General Vehicle Regulations regarding urban traffic regulatory measures. The purpose of this text is to reduce the accident rate in the urban area while regulating the new emerging forms of citizen mobility. The Royal Decree redefines the general speed limits on urban roads (article 50) based on their different classification:

On roads that have a single carriageway and pavement platform, the limit will be 20 kilometres per hour. On roads with a single lane in each direction of traffic, the limit will be 30 kilometres per hour. On roads with two or more lanes per direction of traffic, the limit will remain at 50 kilometres per hour. These limits will not apply until six months after the publication of this project in the Official State Gazette, so that citizens are adequately aware of them and so that public administrations have sufficient time to adapt the signage. Personal mobility The second major area of incidence of this Royal Decree is the regulation of personal mobility vehicles, defined as vehicles with one or more wheels equipped with a single seat and powered exclusively by electric motors that can provide the vehicle with a maximum speed of between 6 and 25 kilometres per hour. This definition, which excludes vehicles for people with reduced mobility, means that their movement on pavements and in pedestrian areas is prohibited. They will have to comply with traffic regulations like other vehicles and their circulation on interurban roads, crossings, as well as highways that pass within the town or in urban tunnels is also prohibited. In order to circulate, personal mobility vehicles must have the corresponding certificate of circulation that certifies that they comply with the technical requirements contemplated in the characteristics manual that will be approved by resolution of the General Director of Traffic. Access to the driving licence Finally, the Council of Ministers has approved a royal decree that reforms

the General Regulations for Drivers to partially incorporate Directive (EU) 2018/645 of the European Parliament and of the Council, of April 18 of 2018, on the initial qualification and continuous training of drivers of vehicles intended for the transport of goods or passengers by road, and Directive 2006/126 / EC of the European Parliament and of the Council, of 20 December, on the Driver's Licence. Its main points are: The minimum age required to drive trucks is reduced to 18 years after having passed the 280-hour Professional Aptitude Certificate (CAP). Until now the established age was 21 years. The minimum age required to drive coaches is also reduced to 18 years, but only without passengers and within a maximum radius of 50 km. It will only be from the age of 21 and with the CAP of 280 hours when they will be able to carry passengers. Both modifications respond to the adequacy of the age for obtaining the driving licence with the established age at which the CAP can be taken. In addition, it is a request made by the road transport sector due to the shortage of professional drivers and opens the possibility for young people to access the labour market. It increases from 3,500 kg to 4,250 kg the weight of vans that can be driven in national territory with the B permit for the transport of goods, only when the increase in mass is due to the new propulsion systems. It is a measure that favours the use of nonpolluting alternative fuels. The Royal Decree also introduces some improvements in the training tests necessary to obtain a driving licence. Among other: It specifies the mandatory protective equipment that applicants have to wear in the skills and driving tests to obtain motorcycle licences. It establishes the possibility that, in certain cases and after an individualised medical and mechanical assessment, access to truck and bus driving licences can be authorised for people with problems associated with the locomotor system. Advances in prosthetics and vehicles make it possible for these people to obtain such permits. Entries into force The modifications related to the Traffic Regulations and Vehicles will enter into force on January 2, 2021. However, the amendment to article 50 of the General Traffic Regulations (speeds in urban areas) will enter into force six months after its publication in the Official State Gazette so that citizens know them adequately and so that public administrations have enough time to adapt the signage. The obligation to have a certificate for circulation and its identification, in accordance with the provisions of the Manual of characteristics of personal mobility vehicles, will be applicable 24 months after the publication of the manual of characteristics of personal mobility vehicles in the Official State Gazette, as established in the sole transitory provision. Transitory Regime of the Royal Decree. The modifications related to the Drivers Regulation will come into force the day after the publication of the Royal Decree in the BOE.

Elche CF, a valuable point against Unai Emery's Team Match reports Abbey Anglers On Tuesday 1stDecember Abbey Anglers fished the third round of the Memorial trophy which also included the annual Fur & Feather Christmas match at the ever popular El Bosquet Complex. Upon arrival the temperature was at a very low 5 degrees and the roads around the complex were only just passable with care after the heavy weekend rains in the area. Twenty threeanglers took part, another great turn out for the time of year. In a very tight contest at the top. Neil McBernie again took the honours. Fishing the pole with maggot on peg 30 he took several carp and a couple of barbel for 14.28kg. He was again followed very closely by Ian brown who fished a small cage feeder with maggot on peg 40 to take several quality carp and a barbel for 14.20kg. Third on the day was Richard Smith on peg 38 who had a few carp but mainly mullet for 7.56kg. Other section winners were as follows Terry Brindley 7.20kg,Tony “can I borrow some maggots Roper with 5.90kg,Keith Hirst6.30kg, Bob Rafferty 4.64kg and John Waples with 7.18kg. The pairs competition was won by Ian Brown & Alan Smith with 17.70kg and Neil McBernie& Graham Patterson were runners up with 14,28kg.

Rods N Reels The following day Rods N Reels fished the 8th round of the summer Championship, again at The El bosquet Complex. You will see that most of our recent matches are fished at this venue, this is because due to Corona restrictions where we are unable to travel into the Murcia region to access other venues. Upon arrival the weather was once again bitterly cold for Spain and was only about 3 degrees. This affected the turn out and only 13 anglers took part and fished pegs 26 to 40. Neil McBernie , who at the moment is virtually unbeatable on this venue again ran out the winner. Fishing peg 29 with pole and maggot he took numerous carp for a toal of 14.60kg. Second was his partner in crime Tony McMillian who used similar tactics on peg 27 for 9.50kg and third was John Waples with 7.38kg. The pairs competition was won by Neil and Steve Budd and runers up were Tony Mac and Bob Rafferty. The club does have vancancies for membership and further details can be found at abbeyangling.es Ian Brown

On Spaniah Constitution Day Elche played in the 23,500 seater Ceramica Stadium, home of Villarreal, only 250km away between the cities of Valencia and Castellon. The Villarreal manager, multi trophy winning Unai Emery, was all set for a game in which his side would monolplise. After all, his team had 20 points and occupied a Champions League 4th place in the La Liga table. Elche were just 3 points above the relegation zone, but still mid table in 10th place. Anticipating this the Elche manager, Jorge Almiron, set up his team to defend. The first half passed without much to comment on. Elche CF played with order and disicpline in almost all of their actions. They did their job of closing down every one of Villareal's moves before the ball made it near Badia's goal. This tactic did leave them short of opportunities, but

it also left Unai Emery wondering just how to deal with the Franjiverdes. Both teams upped their games after half time, all to no avail. Elche CF had their 3rd and final attempted shot on the 55th minute. Villarreal had more chances including two corners in rapid succession, none of which were converted. Tensions were mounting and consequently a few yellow cards were issued, with the award for the best theatrical dives going to Villarreal. The home team continued to have chances, including a very near miss on 72 minutes. Freshly substituted Japanese International Kubo, finished off an exceptional set play piece involving Gerard and Parejo both Spanish International players. Kubo aimed the ball to Badia's bottom right corner, but Badia was not to be beaten and once again he saved Elche. Almiron was so content and confident and

certain of his teams ability and performance that he decided not to make any changes, leaving it to the 87th minute to make his first substitution. The stats really reflect the game. Elche had 3 attempted shots with none on target, whilst Villarreal had 12 shots, 3 of which were on target. Despite gaining just 1 point from the draw, Villarreal managed to move up 1 place on the table, whilst Elche maintained their 10th position. Elche CF will take on 7th placed Andalusian based Granada on Sunday 13th November at 18:30 in the Martinez Valero. As soon as spectators are allowed back into the stadiums, EuroTourGuide will once again be offering Coach Tours with Match Tickets to support Elche CF. TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Football is a simple game, apparently. And you could argue that even some very basic tactics taken straight out of Sunday League have a place in the Premier League - as proven by Manchester United this weekend. When I was kicking around on a Sunday morning, we realised as a team that it was actually better to finish the match with your strongest eleven instead of starting with it. Why? Because when the opposition were getting tired and bringing on their notso-good subs we’d be bringing on fresh players that were better than the ones we were replacing. I reckon Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has caught wind of this approach as, for the second time this season, he called Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford off the bench at half-time to turn a dire United performance into a good one. Not that United coming from behind away from home to win is anything new, oh no. They’ve done that five Premier League matches in a row now, much to the disappointment of David Moyes. Moyseh felt that Henderson’s clearance-stroke-amazing-pass to Fernandes had gone out of player, based on the fact that ‘it went over my head’ which was the best angle anyone was able to get of it. All this technology ruining the game and they don’t have a camera going straight up and down all of the lines on a pitch. Even the BBC, yes the BBC, were one step ahead in MotD able to show ‘beyond reasonable doubt’ that the ball was clearly out which means that Paul Pogba’s lovely little finish from distance should have been chalked off. But, it wasn’t - and the 2,000 fans allowed into the Athletics Stadium had to watch their West Ham side take the lead, watch Sebastian Haller get hit by a sniper having rounded the keeper and then fall to a 3-1 defeat courtesy of Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford MBE. I’d love to know how tempted some were to leave after the third went in, hard-wired habits are hard to break after all. Pogba insisted it was a positive result over and over in the post-match interview, a turn of phrase that still has other connotations in this day and age given how Newcastle and Aston Villa was postponed on Friday night. The Sunday papers said that United were prepared to double Bruno’s wages to ward off interest from Madrid and Barcelona. Mr Ed is once again showing his foolishness - only doubling them? The North London derby must have gone exactly as Jose Mourinho planned - even if he had expected Tanguy Ndombele to turn up on Sunday morning. “Lads, do not worry - Sonny will score early, Harry will score because he always scores against Arsenal and Mikel will have learned more from me in this than in any silly documentary”.

Given my inability to accurately predict anything in football, don’t go anywhere near a betting shop based on this but I not only want Tottenham to win this Premier League title this season, I now truly believe they can. I mean, they won’t - but they can. Why do I want them to win it? Because I’ve spent the last five years calling Mourinho finished, yesterday’s man and so out of date when it comes to modern football he may as well be Sir Alf Ramsey. And I really, really want to be wrong right now. This would be the ultimate Jose thing to do - the ultimate comeback, the ultimate two-fingers up to all naysayers like me who thought he was done. Go on, Jose - and better still, do it with Bale sitting on the bench for the season which would be, frankly, hilarious (and a lot colder for him than the Madrid bench). According to Jurgen Klopp, Chelsea are favourites for the Premier League and they certainly lived up to that tag by seeing off Leeds at Stamford Bridge. Patrick Bamford managed to silence the Chelsea fans in attendance by running on to the assist of the season so far from Kalvin Phillips, before Olivier Giroud continued his one-mancrusade to remind the world that he really should be picked more often than he actually is by scoring his 5th in four days.

to beat an opposition was a new, funky idea. And gameplan or no gameplan, it kinda helps when you have about 13 attacking options to pick from, right Frank?

City’s midfield generally - is the same as Claude Makele was. Now, that’s either massively overstating Rodri’s abilities or one of the more insulting jabs you can have at Claude without getting sued.

Of course, all Jurgen is trying to do is distract us from the fact that it’s not his players that are suffering from extreme fatigue, it’s actually him - and it’s making him very, very grumpy. That said, Kloppo has come up with a narrative that might finally get people onside about having five substitutes - Jurgen has been saying it might help Gareth Southgate and England win the Euros. Now, now Jurgen. Unless having five subs is going to force Gareth to stop playing that 343 monstrosity, that isn’t going to change a thing.

Up at Turf Moor, Sean Dyche briefly forgot he was Sean Dyche and Sean Dyche hates players falling over cheaply - making his insistence that ‘he doesn’t want that to be a foul’ but ‘it is a foul’ in the modern game a little grating. Richie and the DLC - sounding very much like a late 90s funk band - linked up once more to get Everton level. And, in that single goal, Everton regressed to the mean getting 1-1 draws away at Burnley.

Liverpool may not be favourites in their gaffer’s eyes but they did a decent job on Wolves in front of some fans at Anfield. Connor Coady endeared himself to the 2000 watching on by gifting Mo Salah the opener before undoing all his popularity by seemingly taking a bit of a dive in the area after Mane got nowhere near him. Jose reminded us that Liverpool would have to win by “many” to top the table by the end of the evening and that they “wouldn’t beat Wolves by many” but they managed to beat Wolves 4-0 so does that count as many? I know, I know, not the biggest question of the weekend.

Kurt Zouma and Christian Pulisic finished the job, but it was the nonpenalty given after Ben Chilwell caught Poveda in the exact same way that Robertson caught Welbeck last weekend that caused this match’s token VAR outrage. The only difference between the two was that Welbeck stumbled to the floor and Poveda managed to stay on his feet - so that’ll help players stop going down with the merest of touch then, eh?

I’m not sure which milestone Pep was notching up when he led Manchester City into battle with Fulham - something like his 200th/300th/400th game in charge or something, I didn’t check - but I doubt there have been many in there where he’s never made a substitution. This was one of them, as the eleven that started were the eleven that finished and beat Fulham (only) 2-0.

Frank Lampard said post-match that Chelsea had been working behind the scenes to come up with a gameplan to beat Leeds in a way that would suggest coming up with a gameplan

It was a strong gust of wind that got Raheem Sterling tumbling over for KDB to get the crucial second from the spot, but something even more amusing was Steve McManaman’s claims that Rodri incredibly immobile in the middle of

Did anyone have 5-1 Palace on their acca? No? You surprise me. A far more likely bet was VAR and the referee combining in some form to completely ruin a game of football - Graeme Souness is going to think anything other than ABH on a football pitch is ‘soft’ but it’s hard to disagree with him that Mathieu Perreria was a touch hard done by to get his marching orders for that. Palace took so much advantage of WBA having ten men that even Benteke got a brace. Chris Wilder might be getting under Jurgen’s skin, but there are more weekend references to their spats than goals being scored by the Blades. Sheffield United looked like they were taking a decent point away from their match with Leicester until Jamie Vardy did what he’d been threatening to do for most of the match - scoring, and leaving Wilder’s side with easily the worst start to a Premier League season in history.

If you are still frantically searching for amazing Christmas gifts for under a tenner, then you could do a lot worse than getting everyone still on your list a copy of “Tales from the Top Flight: The Premier League Yearbook” off Amazon - which is a lovely compilation of all my columns over the 2019/20 season in one book. Ideal for Secret Santa, I’ve been told.

Busters Golf report A cold and blustery wind took us to Vistabella for our December Stableford, this end of our year game is always a touch different as we have players jockeying for the final of our player of the year tournament. Our game this December was made more difficult by the cold winds and occasional rain, I played alongside Rob Ashman whose excellent putting and some admirable recovery shots resulted in a score of thirty-six points, this held his lead giving him our player of the year award, well done Rob. As is the norm we returned to Bar Little Leias ( ex Bar El Toro ) in Calle Vigo Quesada, for our presentation, our best front nine with twelve points were taken by Allan Collis and our best back nine winner was John Rush who scored an excellent twenty-one points, both taking home bottle’s of wine, in second place with thirty-three points was our Captain Martin Collins and our winner with thirtysix points was Rob Ashman both also taking home wine, I must thank Ian and his staff for providing a warm welcome along with sandwiches on our return, also a thank you to Ian the boss of Little Leias for sponsoring our prizes. We had two, twos this game, sharing our twos pot were Ian Allison and Phil Harris, well done all winners and players on this very wintry day. Busters Golf Society is a small friendly group of like-minded people who play on the first Friday of the month , depending on the time of the year we generally have between sixteen and twenty-four players, over the six years since we first formed the society some of our original members have moved on, either returned to their country of origin or have ventured to pastures new, so we are looking for a few more members to swell our ranks, if you are interested in joining our society (it's free) then please email me Barry Grinsell at bustersgolfsociety@hotmail.com quoting your phone number and current handicap and I will usually get back to you within a couple of days.
