Puig appeals for ‘prudence’ over Christmas See Main Advert on page 26-27

President of the Valencian Community, Ximo Puig, stated on Monday that "mobility limitations, night curfew and capacity limitations will continue until January 15 in the Valencian Community. If, in the course of the next few days, the

situation changes, we would take action.” Puig has also appealed to the public for "the utmost prudence" over the Christmas season. The head of the Valencian government has said that officials will be keeping an eye on the epidemiological situation of the Community in light of the festive season and if anything changes, restrictions may too change. Specific measures for Christmas will be in force as of December 23 and, among some allowances for festive gatherings is that a maximum of 6 people are allowed at social gatherings unless they are relatives or close friends in which case, on some dates groups of 10 will be allowed. Key dates for groups of 10 are: December 24, 25, 26 and 31, as well as January 1. Over the course of this coming week, if the downward trend of the virus continues, the Valencian Community

Ximo Puig

could see the current 'extreme risk' level lowered. A lot depends on hospital figures which on Friday saw ICU occupancy below 25% (23.99%). Meanwhile it was confirmed this week that the borders of the Valencian Community will remain closed until January 15. However, cross border travel will be permitted on December 23, 24, 25, 31 and on January 1 for visits to relatives and close friends, known as allegados.

Man finds squatters sitting on his sofa Squatting continues to be a hot topic nationally and also in Vega Baja. The Local Police of Callosa de Segura dealt with a case on behalf of a home owner

at around 10pm the other night. The owner had be alerted by his neighbours that lights were being used

in his house, when they knew the owner was not in the property on the main road through the Rafal. The man went to see for himself and could tell that there were indeed people inside his house, it also looked like the door had been forced. Sensibly, rather than confront the occupants on his own, the home owner called the police. The agents, accompanied by the owner, entered the house easily since the door had been forced and was without a lock. Inside they found two men and a woman sitting on the sofa and appearing to have made themselves quite at home. The 'squatters' denied having forced the door and claimed they found it in that state. They claimed that they had been evicted from their home that same morning and believed that the home belonged to a bank. They thought that no-one would care if they took up residence in a bank repossession for a short while until they could get themselves sorted out. The three people were formally identified by the police and left the house without any struggles and arguments.

HELP Vega Baja in San Miguel is a nonprofit organisation whose sole aim is to help people of all ages with all sorts of problems, assisting in all sorts of ways in times of crises, especially when the police or health authorities are involved. When Entre Naranjos resident, Michelle Edwards, heard that they were short of people to help knit warm blankets and clothes for the homeless she got straight on the case and put the word out amongst the Entre Naranjos/Laguna Green urbanisation requesting residents to help knit for the needy. There were no shortage of volunteers and, over just a few short weeks, Michelle has been able to donate to their office in San Miguel 17 blankets, over 15 pairs of mittens and scarves all in various thicknesses and colours, with lots more still to follow. Such has been the interest and enthusiasm from the knitters that

Michelle decided to get the knitters together once a week on a Tuesday afternoon at the local Laguna Tavern for a Knit And Natter session where everyone can come along and help each other out with patterns and ideas for knitting and crocheting. There is, of course, the occasional glass of wine that goes with the knitting and nattering! To date there are currently 30+ knitters helping out to make a difference to the needy. There has also been a great deal of interest from those who cannot knit with over ₏100 being donated for Michelle to buy wool and needles which has been gratefully received. HELP Vega Vaja have been really delighted with these gifts for the needy which everyone hopes will keep them warm throughout the coming winter months. Well done to all the kind hearted people and don’t forget... KEEP KNITTING.

Local Police to Glue increase Christmas gang arrested covid checks Eight people have been arrested for committing around 15 robberies on homes in the Alicante region. The gang used glue filaments on doors of properties to establish whether or not anyone lived there. Using a glue gun, a line of glue was used to seal a door or gateway. Returning later, if the filament was unbroken, it was decided that no one was home and the robbery could proceed undisturbed. National Police arrested eight people, seven of Georgian nationality and one Slovakian. Police say the gang members were highly specialized in this type of robbery and travelled throughout the Alicante province to target homes. Investigations led officers to inspect a number of gold-buying establishments where it is believed the gang members sold on the stolen jewellery. Some was even melted down to prevent identification.

The Deputy Mayor of Orihuela, José Aix, the Councillor for Citizen Security, Ramón López and the representative of the Local Police, Ricardo Cánovas have reported on the measures to be adopted over Christmas across Orihuela. “It will be an unusual Christmas due to the pandemic, so from the Departments of Urban Planning and Citizen Security area we have planned a series of preventative measures for commerce and restaurants with the aim of enjoying Christmas safely ”, Ramón López explained. José Aix, added that “from the Urban area we are going to show generosity by responding to the requests that hoteliers send us to generate regulated and guarded spaces, but at the same time we will be firm in complying with the regulations against COVID- 19 ".

Police sources say the gang was highly organized and structured. Some identified the houses, and marked the doors or gates with a string of glue (usually around dawn) while others carried out the actual break in with specialised tools. Later, other gang members were charged with selling on jewellery and valuables.

From the Citizen Security area, it has been reported that the Local Police will reinforce its presence in the main commercial and leisure areas with special controls to guarantee citizen security and monitor compliance with the measures established against Covid-19.

In many of cases the owners did not notice the theft until they went to look for jewellery and realised it was no longer there.

Pilar Carols

Currently investigators have not yet located all owners of the recovered jewellery, so if during the last few months you have been the victim of a break in at your home, and have had jewellery stolen in Alicante or Elche, it might be useful to get in touch with the Alicante Provincial Police Station in case your items are among those recovered. Proof of ownership would likely be required, as well as any paperwork pertaining to the initial police report on the robbery itself.

For the very first time the Royal British Legion Concert Band will be playing Christmas Carols in the main square at Pilar de la Horadada on Saturday December 19th at 12.30 pm. Everybody welcome.

The objective of the Local Police this Christmas "is not only to control compliance with the measures against COVID-19, but to collaborate with the establishments that need support," Ramón López stressed. Compliance with the use of the mask, social distancing, and control of the measures imposed on commercial and hospitality activities for the prevention of COVID19 will continue to be monitored. “We are committed to the health of the residents of Orihuela and at the same time we support the economy. With these two variables we believe that there is nothing better than enjoying Christmas in Orihuela with all the guarantees and in a safe way,” said José Aix, Deputy Mayor of Orihuela. Police across the municipality will ensure that the community complies with the resolutions established on the 5th and 9th December in relation to gathering numbers, hotels, nightlife. People are reminded that the beaches will be closed to large gatherings on Christmas day. Exceptions to the resolutions are only permitted for 24th to 26th December and 31st December with the curfew extended to 1.30am and no new orders after 12.30am.

More tests now accepted for entry to Spain Travellers or returning residents to Spain can now show a blood test sample to prove they are Covidfree if they cannot get a PCR test and children under six are exempt, the health authority has announced. All tests, however, must be taken less than 72 hours before arrival in the country – not 72 hours before boarding the plane – and results must be negative. Although Spanish nationals, wherever they live, and residents in Spain of other nationalities cannot be denied entry, they are likely to be fined if they do not have proof of a negative test result. Also, until now, test results were required to be in either Spanish or English, but they can now also be in German or French. The move comes after a handful of Spaniards living in Manchester, UK – a country where up to a quarter of a million Spanish nationals reside permanently – complained via the media that they were having to pay up to £250 for a test just to be able to spend Christmas with their families, and that results of tests carried out by the British National Health Service (NHS) in cases where they were thought to have

had contact with a 'positive', only gave their name and UK address and no identifying data such as a passport number or Spanish national ID. It is not clear whether a blood test result will prove to be a cheaper or more convenient alternative, since this will depend

upon availability in the traveller's country of departure. But the exemption for kids under six will certainly save time and money for many families with small children. The Spanish Health Ministry will also accept a negative coronavirus test known by its initials TMA from air travellers arriving in Spain, as well as the better-known PCR test. Since 23rd November, a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of arrival in the country’s airports has been a requirement from so-called “risk countries,” with

the threat of a fine of up to €6,000 for those who fail to produce one. The Transcription-Mediated Amplification (TMA) test has been developed by the multinational Grifols, which is of Spanish origin, and detects the presence of the coronavirus in an individual. Samples are taken in a similar way as a PCR test, via a nasal swab. Also like a PCR test, the process looks for genetic material from the coronavirus, amplifying it and measuring it. The difference in practice is that the results come back in around two hours, instead of four for a PCR test, and a TMA test is usually cheaper – just under €100 compared to above €100. These two tests have been chosen by the ministry as requirements for entry into Spain given that they directly detect the coronavirus, and as such diagnose an active infection. Antigen tests, which are cheaper and faster, can sometimes pick up past infections, which is why the government has ruled them out for now. These changes were announced by the Spanish government in a press release and became official after being published in the Official State Gazette (BOE).

Brussels Spain urges to reform in return for EU funds The European Commission wants Spain to address its unresolved structural problems on three fronts – pensions, jobs and market unity – and it is demanding to see a credible and coherent plan setting out Madrid’s reform agenda as part of the deal to release a recently approved package of European stimulus aid. Brussels, instead of seeking to impose reforms, is asking countries to approve structural changes in exchange for a flood of money included in Next Generation EU, a European recovery fund aimed at addressing the fallout of the coronavirus crisis that will allocate €750 million in total, half of it in grants. Spain has secured €140 billion of that amount, making it one of the biggest beneficiaries. The European Commission wants to use this massive injection of funds to ensure that countries complete reforms that have only been partially addressed. In the case of Spain, Brussels wants the government to make commitments on three major issues: guaranteeing the sustainability of the pension system, producing new rules to reduce temporary contracts, and drafting a law that will unify market criteria and avoid the fragmentation of regional regulation. The EU’s executive branch would also like to make some of

the recovery funds conditional to the actual implementation of those reforms, although Brussels and the IMF maintain that this could be an incentive if the aid is used to compensate for the shortterm costs of any in-depth reform. Spain is now negotiating a package of measures with Brussels that it wants to present in January, coinciding with the announcement of the projects that the EU aid will fund. Brussels wants to approve the national recovery plans setting out member states’ reform and investment agendas by April, so it can issue European bonds before the summer. According to the government’s plans, there will be some changes to the 2013 economic market unity law that was passed to reduce bureaucracy and bottlenecks derived from the various central and regional administrations involved in the process. Meanwhile, Social Security Minister José Luis Escrivá has already drafted a pension reform plan, although the EU Commission is wary of the numbers. And on the jobs front, Economy Minister Nadia Calviño and Labor Minister Yolanda Díaz are battling to impose their respective views of what labor reform should look like: the former would like to leave things essentially the way they are, while the latter wants to partially

repeal the 2012 labour law introduced by the conservative Popular Party (PP), which made firing cheaper. The executive is working on all three areas, but declining to provide details about commitments that could potentially lead to confrontation with the unions and employer groups, with the political opposition, and even among coalition partners. EU sources said that Spain is one of the countries requiring the most attention. European forecasts are predicting a 12.4 percent contraction of gross domestic product (GDP) this year and soaring debt levels. And the job market is largely stable thanks to a government retention scheme known as ERTE which is due to expire early next year. The Commission is unhappy with the fact that Spanish pensions are tied to the consumer price index, and wants measures to guarantee that this expense will be covered without pushing up debt levels. Brussels is also expecting moves on the labor front, but does not want to see the 2012 law repealed. The Commission is mostly interested in reducing Spain’s over-reliance on temporary contracts, and some sources said it also wants to see training programs for workers who will lose their jobs next year when the ERTE furlough scheme ends.

Orihuela installs its AACC largest nativity scene continues The Orihuela nativity scene has surpassed all expectations this year with the installation of more than 2,000 figures and new biblical and traditional scenes can be found in the municipal Bethlehem that was inaugurated last Thursday in the Episcopal Palace and which is located in the centre of the patio, which was the only place large enough to accommodate it. The protocols set by the health crisis are also met by having an entry route and an exit route. In the midst of the pandemic, safety and hygiene measures have been taken to the extreme for the visit to the nativity scene, with a limited capacity, hydroalcoholic gel points and signs on the ground to keep distances. The Belen has two new scenes from the Bible, Grand opening such as the Massacre of the Innocents and the inscription in the registry of the Child Jesus, as well as other traditional ones from the Vega Baja garden. The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, officially opened the municipal nativity scene, together with

the councillor for Festivities, Mariola Rocamora, and the Councillor of Health, José Galiano. The event was also attended by the Hernández Cabrera family – creators of the Belen, and José Antonio Martínez, director of the Museum of Sacred Art. Councillor Rocamora explained that this year “we have a nativity scene that maintains the most traditional aspects and that has important new features. This Nativity scene is large and has been expanded with care and detail, with many hours of work to be completed with more than 2,000 figures”. The Councillor of Festivities has highlighted that figures from previous nativity scenes have been restored and incorporated with new figures that the City Council has acquired over recent years. The Municipal Nativity Scene is located in the cloister of the Episcopal Palace, and can be visited from 10th December to 6th January, from 10am to 2pm and from 4pm to 9pm. On 24th, 31st December and 5th January, the hours will be until 8pm.

to battle cancer

The AACC volunteers continue to work hard to raise much needed funds to help in the fight against cancer and also to raise awareness for early detection in order to save as many live as possible in the local community. Like all other charities, the AACC has struggled to raise funds but recently it has been able to boost the coffers from a number of local events. In October to mark International Breast Cancer Awareness the charity raised €2,000 thanks to Zenia Boulevard which supports the AACC throughout the year and have done so since it opened. These specific funds were raised because the management at the Boulevard paid a percentage of its customers’ receipts to us. Maria Wilson said: “I would like to thank them so much for their continued support. Zenia Boulevard has always supported Maria and the Pink Ladies in its fundraising for local anti-cancer charities.”

Colin Philpot raised over €901

Colin Philpot a valued member of staff at CK1, at Via Park III, personally raised €901.60 by abstaining from alcohol and staying Sober for October. Of the money raised €200 was donated to Macmillan nurses in the UK and €701.60 to Maria and the Pink Ladies. Finally, The Local at La Florida held a Christmas Fayre on Friday 4th December on behalf of Maria and the Pink Ladies, there was an array of Christmas stalls and live entertainment throughout the day. A much-needed €480 was raised on the day, even though the weather wasn´t very kind and didn’t encourage people out of the house.

The Local at La Florida raised €480

All of these funds will be passed directly to the AACC to help in the fight against cancer. Maria and the Pink Ladies has managed to keep its office open most of the time post lockdown and continues to arrange early detection appointments for residents of the local community. These can be booked either by telephoning 965329841 or email: info@pinkladies.es or visiting our web site at www.pinkladies.es The office at Playa Flamenca will close for the festive season on Friday 11th December 2020 and reopen Monday 11th January 2021 but volunteers will still be arranging early detection appointments for Orihuela Costa locals during this period via the appointments page on its web site at www.pinkladies.es

Four lions at Barcelona zoo test positive for coronavirus

Four lions at a Barcelona zoo have tested positive for COVID-19, officials have said. Three 16-yearold females, named Zala, Nima and Run Run and Kiumbe, a fouryear-old male, were tested after keepers noticed they showed slight symptoms of the disease. They are suffering symptoms similar to very mild flu, with no signs of difficulty in breathing and have been treated with antiinflammatories. It's the second time big cats in a zoo are known to have contracted coronavirus, the first being at the Bronx Zoo in New York, where four tigers and three lions tested positive in April. All

the animals recovered. The Veterinary Service of Barcelona contacted their colleagues in New York for advice on how to deal with the outbreak. Keepers carried out PCR tests on the lions in the same way as humans are tested as the animals are accustomed to contact with zoo staff, two of whom tested positive for coronavirus last month. According to Spanish national newspaper El Pais, the staff at Zoo Barcelona worked with the lions, but the zoo has not confirmed this, and officials have launched an investigation into how the animals became

infected. Barcelona zoo said in a statement: "The zoo has contacted and collaborated with international experts such as the Veterinary Service of the Bronx Zoo, the only one that has documented cases of Sars-CoV-2 infection in felines. "The lions were given veterinary care for their mild clinical condition - similar to a very mild flu condition - through anti-inflammatory treatment and close monitoring, and the animals responded well." The lions have had no contact with other animals at the zoo, which is open to visitors.

Pilar gives gift vouchers to residents The people of Pilar de la Horadada are to receive the "gift voucher" of 30 euros to spend this Christmas in the bars, businesses and restaurants in the municipality with the aim of promoting the local economy in these difficult times. Residents can collect their vouchers from the specially erected tent in Avenida Felipe VI until 16th December from 9am to 1pm and from 4pm to 7pm. The initiative is proving a big hit with local residents and considerable queues have been seen every day. The City Council of Pilar de la Horadada will distribute a total of 300,000 euros during this campaign by issuing 10,000 consumer vouchers worth 30 euros to promote local spending and that can be used until 10th January. The vouchers are being given to those citizens, among its 21,000 residents, who were registered in Pilar de la Horadada prior to 14th March, 2020, when the first state of alarm began, and who are still registered as of 1st December on the register of inhabitants of the municipality, and of legal age. The establishments that are taking part in the campaign are published on the website: www.pilardelahoradada.org. The consistory has arranged several service posts in the tent to make the handover of the vouchers more speedy, while the Civil Protection is ensuring compliance with safety and hygiene measures. The vouchers must be spent in the same establishment and the participating premises are obliged to

accept them, unless the maximum number of exchangeable vouchers has been reached, which is 333 for each business. The Councilor for Commerce of Pilar de la Horadada, José Antonio Martínez, explained that, with this initiative, it is intended “to support local commerce by promoting consumption in shops, services and hotels and, on the other, to allow Pilarean families deduct 30 euros from the Christmas purchases they make in local companies”. This measure is part of the Impulse Plan for Economic Reactivation that the PP government team has been carrying out in recent months aimed at families, companies and the self-employed, in order to reduce the economic and social

impact that is being caused by the coronavirus health crisis. The local government has provided 1.5 million euros to fund this plan aimed at the business fabric of the municipality. Among other measures to improve the situation of the local economy, the City Council of Pilar is going to distribute aid of half a million euros among local selfemployed, who can request aid of up to a thousand euros to counteract the losses caused to their businesses by the state of alarm and forced closure. In addition, the municipality will also give each of the 400 municipal employees two vouchers for an amount of 25 euros each that can be exchanged until 10th January at the 150 bars, restaurants, shops and businesses that are part of the campaign.

Will you be prepared to maximize that investment when it’s time to sell one home and buy another? The truth is, most homeowners aren’t prepared. Some might focus on the sale, but forget that the next purchase is just as important when it comes to their life plan, lifestyle, and overall portfolio and investment strategy. No matter where you are in life, or what neighborhood you live in, your home is very likely one of your largest investments. You’ll care for it, invest in décor, furnishings, and upgrades, and by the time you’re ready to sell it you will have had many different experiences inside those walls: birthdays, love, family gatherings and dinners. The home becomes more than just a house, it becomes the place where life existed, flourished, and grew. It’s the place families were strengthened and children were raised, the place where infants were sung to in the night. By the time you sell your home, it has become a place where memories dwell, and is much more “just a house.” So how will you navigate all the decisions that need to be made when it’s time to part with your home? Choosing the right real estate professional is key. Real estate is a business, just like anything else. And choosing the right business partner is key. Your home

sale (and the purchase of another) will hinge on the success of your real estate professional and their business acumen and communication skills. A home sale is not simply about whether the home looks great or not, it’s about a host of other decisions and factors. Your home sale will go smoothly if the agent has done their homework, asked the right questions, and prepared the buyer and/or seller appropriately. In other sales industries, a salesperson would have several customer interactions via telephone or face-to-face, conduct in-depth discovery sessions, and use probing questions to fully understand expectations and motivations. However, in a typical real estate transaction, you may have one or two meetings before a listing is awarded to someone. When it comes to real estate advice, most of us have heard the mantra “location, location, location!” But it’s really much more than that. Investments are also contingent upon market prices, supply and demand, and what’s going on in the community around you. There are 25 rules every homeowner needs to follow in order to sell a home, regardless of what you’ve heard in the past. These rules will help make your entire transaction smoother, more profitable, and even fun! Mystery monolith appears in Spain A forbidding Spanish hillside, a small German town and a muddy potato field in Belgium have become the latest places to discover a mysterious silver monolith in their midst, in a puzzling trend which has now spread to six countries. One of the bleak silver columns appeared by the ruins of an old church in Ayllon, Spain, where local authorities warned people to steer clear of the dangerous slopes. Another showed up over the weekend in Sulzbach, Germany, overlooking a field near a shopping centre, while a third was spotted today in the Flemish village of Baasrode. After a monolith first appeared in the Utah desert last month - sparking comparisons to the Stanley Kubrick film 2001: A Space Odyssey - similar structures have popped up in Colombia, Romania, Holland, the Isle of Wight and elsewhere in the US. The objects have sparked wild speculation about aliens and some of them have vanished soon after their appearance, adding to the intrigue. In Spain, the town of Ayllon is no closer to knowing how its monolith got there, but mayor

Maria Jesus Sanz suspects it is meant as a 'joke'. The mayor was unimpressed with the craftsmanship of the item, saying it was made of three metal sheets which had already collapsed several times. However, local authorities warned people to

avoid the hillside which 'can be harmful and dangerous'. They also called for 'individual responsibility' in light of coronavirus, after some of the other monoliths attracted small crowds of visitors. Another monolith was discovered at Compton Beach in the Isle of Wight, encouraging a few camera-wielding visitors to pose for pictures. 'The person who put it there knows what they're doing,' said Tom Dunford, who stumbled on the 7.5ft object as he walked his

dog one morning. 'It's someone playing a practical joke. I don't believe in any of these conspiracy theories,' he said. The original monolith, a shiny pillar in the remote Utah desert, was first spotted on 18th November by baffled local officials counting bighorn sheep from the air. The discovery fired the imaginations of UFO spotters, conspiracy theorists and Stanley Kubrick fans around the world. Photographer Ross Bernards, who visited the monolith, described how four men suddenly appeared that night, pushed the object over and dismantled it before carrying it off in a wheelbarrow. A community called 'The Most Famous Artist' founded by American artist Matty Mo has since claimed credit for the Utah monolith. The group is said to be selling three full-sized monoliths similar to the ones found in different parts of the world for $45,000 each. When Mo was asked if the group was claiming responsibility for the Isle of Wight stunt, he said: 'The monolith is out of my control at this point. 'Godspeed to all the aliens working hard around the globe to propagate the myth.'

FITUR International Tourism Fair 2021 moved to May One of the planet's largest tourism industry trade fairs has already set its dates for 2021, but not in the usual month – instead of being held around the third week in January, FITUR will take place in May. The Feria Internacional de Turismo, which fills Madrid's huge IFEMA exhibition centre for five days, is – along with London's World Travel Market (WTM) – the one tourism trade fair practically no town in Spain wants to miss, even if it comes at a high cost to the local budget. This is because Madrid's International Tourism Fair is among the world's biggest, is a place where literally hundreds of deals are struck between local councils and tour operators – among other key industry businesses – and where local, national and regional authorities in countries on every inhabited continent can gain a clear picture of a municipality's or province's main attractions for visitors. FITUR attendance is an investment rather than an expense, and there are very few other chances for travel agencies based in, for example, Gabon, South Korea, Niger and Papua New Guinea to see footage of ski resorts in Aragón, mineral mud-bath beaches in

Formentera, or local cuisine or country breaks in Alicante or Málaga, under the same roof. As a result, the FITUR organising committee and IFEMA's management consider the fair to be 'absolutely essential' for the recovery of Spain's and the rest of the world's ailing tourism industries, nearly all of which ground to a halt this year because of the pandemic. But in January, when it always takes place, the Covid-19 crisis will still be unresolved, as only a few countries will have started vaccinating their populations and, in these, only the most vulnerable and highly-exposed residents. By the spring, it is hoped that the vaccination efforts will have started to bear fruit and that most of the world, with the exception of young, otherwisehealthy adults, will be

immunised. To this end, the organisers plan to stage the FITUR between 19th and 23rd May, 2021. Every year, FITUR sees over 11,000 companies from around 165 countries and representatives from local and national governments in almost every nation on earth gather together in one venue. The fair typically brings in about €330 million in one hit for Madrid and for Spain as a whole. This January, before the word 'Coronavirus' had even entered the ordinary civilian's vocabulary, FITUR representatives reported that holidaymaker numbers in Spain had topped 83 million per annum – nearly double the nation's year-round population of 47.1 million – and that, collectively, visitors to the country spent a total of €92 billion annually.

We need a deal, says Spain’s foreign minister With Brexit negotiators now under orders to turn matters over to their political bosses, Spanish Foreign Minister Arancha González Laya offered a pointed message: "We need a deal." Among EU27 countries, Spain maintains some of the closest relations with the UK, with more than 365,000 UK citizens registered to live in the country, extensive economic and trading ties, and the British territory of Gibraltar attached as a tiny appendage to Spanish soil. In a recent interview, González Laya said of Brexit: "What it has shown at the heart of it is ... the illusion of independence and the need to manage interdependence — and this is why we need a deal, because we need to manage our interdependence." Spain's desire for an agreement reflects the shades of differences on Brexit among the EU27. While all of the EU national leaders have said that a bad deal would be worse than no deal, some capitals clearly dread the prospect of a nodeal scenario more than others. Despite such differences, there is no indication the bloc is prepared to shift its negotiating mandate or brightest red lines on outstanding

issues like the so-called level playing field to maintain fair competition and governance of any final agreement. "It's OK to insist on the dream of independence. It's fine," González Laya said, using the coronavirus pandemic as an example. "But when you look at reality every day, you know that the vaccine is

going to be invented somewhere; is going to be bottled somewhere else; is going to be shipped around the world. And until all of this happens, you are not going to be safe and your citizens will not be safe. I'm taking this as an example. I could take many others." "From a very pragmatic Spain," she said, "we have always maintained that a deal was more desirable than breaking up without a deal." González Laya warned that no deal would have a terrible impact on people and businesses. "We

looked at the consequences of what this no deal would mean," she said. "In Spain it’s pretty clear: there will be a border — in Gibraltar ... this will become the external border of the European Union and this will have an impact for Gibraltarians as well as for Spaniards in the region." "We know what it will mean for shipments of fruits and vegetables. We know what it will mean for the activities of banks and automobile factories. And because we know all of this — it's called interdependence — our obligation is to find a deal. Now that's not a deal at any cost," she added. Based on her experience in trade negotiations, González Laya said only a fair result would be acceptable, and that it would likely reflect the UK's limited willingness to remain bound to EU rules. "We need to find a deal that is balanced," she said. "We know that it will be less ambitious than what we had hoped for because the appetite is simply not there. Fine. But at the end of the day, let's find a deal. We owe it to our businesses and we owe it to our people today. Adding more turbulence to the current extremely volatile economic and social environment will only make matters worse."

Spain takes part in global breast cancer research A ground-breaking study that could change treatment for breast cancer for the first time in 30 years has included a major contribution by Spanish researchers. Working with scientists from the USA and South Korea, the team concluded that a third of patients in Spain who would otherwise have been treated with chemotherapy may not, in fact, need it. A total of 792 women, via 21 Spanish hospitals, made up nearly 20 percent of the 5,083 patients studied worldwide in trials conducted by Canada's NCIC CTG, France's Unicancer hospital network, the National Cancer Centre-Korea, the US-based groups ECOG-ACRIN Cancer Research Group, NRG Oncology and The Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology, and Spain's Breast Cancer Research Group (GEICAM). Women who have gone through the menopause and whose breast cancer is HER2negative with positive hormone receptors (RH+), with one to three lymph nodes affected and a recurrence score of 25 or less – on a scale of 0 to 100 – make up a third of patients in Spain with breast cancer and, like everywhere else in the world since around 1980, have been treated with chemotherapy and hormone therapy, typically by taking

Tamoxifen or similar for five to 10 years after surgery. But the RxPONDER project has found that the prognosis for this patient typology is just the same with hormone therapy only as it is with both. About 8,000 women a year in Spain fall into the category of patients studied, he says. A genomic test, 'Oncotype DX', was used for the trials – a predictive tool created by Exact Sciences and distributed in Spain, exclusively, by Palex Medical – examines 21 genes in the tumour and indicates whether or not the cancer is likely to return, and whether the patient would benefit from chemotherapy. The 'Oncotype DX' test was carried out on 5,083 patients worldwide, of whom two-thirds were post-menopausal and the rest pre-menopausal; those with a recurrence score of 25 or lower were split into randomly-selected groups to be given either hormone treatment and chemotherapy or just hormone treatment. They were monitored for five years, says Spain's chief researcher involved, Dr Emilio Alba, and it was found that where they had between one and three affected lymph nodes – a situation that arises in about 5,300 women

annually in Spain – their prognosis was no worse without chemotherapy than for those who were given it. Among the pre-menopausal patients, though, chemotherapy is still strongly advised to prevent a recurrence; post-five year survival rates, which is a cautious way of referring to a complete cure, rose by 5.2 percentage points where both types of treatment were given. Patients who had not yet gone through the menopause were alive and cancer-free after five years in 94.2 percent of cases, compared with 89 percent of those who only had hormone treatment and no chemotherapy. The research showed that prognosis for all groups was 'excellent', even where they had up to three affected lymph nodes, with a post-cancer five-year survival rate averaging over 90 percent. It will mean a huge weight off the shoulders of thousands of women in Spain and beyond every year, since often, knowing they have to go through chemotherapy is every bit as devastating as a cancer diagnosis in itself, given the unpleasant sideeffects and, particularly, the knowledge that their hair would fall out.

Video production A video of your business allows an audience to see the genuine nature of ‘how you do what you do’. It can have a powerful impact that builds customer confidence and increases the likelihood they will buy from you or visit your business. • Video is one of the top shared pieces of content on social media, 81% of businesses use video as a marketing tool - up from 63% over the last year. The truth is that ‘Social Media Marketing’ takes time and lots of it! For a small monthly fee, everything could be managed for you. 9. Facebook marketing Combined with hard copy advertising it becomes a major benefit as the two routes to market feed one another. Costa Blanca People provide your business with the vehicle to become widely known across all types of prospects/people whereas Facebook provides you with ability to reach an exact audience and build on the awareness already gained from hard copy advertising. Facebook allows you to sell online, interact with customers, get to your

customers on mobile devices, pass on information, show videos etc. Many small business owners do not use it to its full potential, but a dual marketing process can increase your prospects, increase your audience, and increase your sales. • As of Q1 2020, there are 2.6 billion monthly active Facebook users. (Statista, 2020) • Facebook is the primary content distribution channel for marketers today. (HubSpot, 2020) • As of April 2020, 35% of global Instagram audiences were between the ages of 25 and 34. (Statista, 2020) 10. General IT Support Businesses today need technology. It plays an essential role in any business, big or small. If your technology fails, the effects on your business can be catastrophic. We can provide you with online support both preventive and problem solving. We do not fix computers, we fix what happens with them when they run slowly, or have been hacked, or lack SSL Security checks 11. WordPress websites If you have a WordPress site and it’s not running as it should then there are problems, it could be anything that requires a security audit, through firewall installation, caching and out of date plugins to image sizing and deadlinks. CBWS can help fix these problems. This Week´s Movie Picks Geostorm

The Grinch

Geostorm is a 2017 American science fiction disaster film directed, cowritten, and co-produced by Dean Devlin in his feature film directorial debut. The film stars Gerard Butler, Jim Sturgess, Ed Harris, Abbie Cornish, Richard Schiff, Alexandra Maria Lara, Robert Sheehan, Daniel Wu, Eugenio Derbez, and Andy García. The plot follows a satellite designer who tries to save the world from a storm of epic proportions caused by malfunctioning climate-controlling satellites.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas is a 2000 American Christmas fantasy comedy-drama film directed by Ron Howard and written by Jeffrey Price and Peter S. Seaman. Based on Dr. Seuss's 1957 book of the same name, it was the first Dr. Seuss book to be adapted into a full-length feature film. The film is narrated by Anthony Hopkins and stars Jim Carrey in the title role along with Jeffrey Tambor, Christine Baranski, Bill Irwin and Molly Shannon in supporting roles, as well as Taylor Momsen as Cindy Lou Who. Because the film is based on a children's picture book, many additions were made to the storyline in order to bring it up to feature-length, including some information about the backstory of the title character and reworking the story's minor character Cindy Lou Who as a main character.

Gordon Ramsay's daughter prefers mum's cooking to chef dad's Gordon Ramsay may be one of the most well-known chefs on the planet – but that doesn’t mean he’s without a couple of critics. The Hell's Kitchen star’s daughter Tilly isn’t the biggest fan of his food, and much prefers her mum’s cooking. Aspiring chef Tilly, 19, shared the shock revelation during a candid challenge with her famous Dad. The father-daughter duo competed against one another in the 'This or That' challenge which saw them answer truthfully to an array of rather controversial questions. Gordon and Tilly recreated the viral TikTok challenge as they danced around to Run DMC's 'It's Tricky' from their home in Cornwall. Sporting matching black outfits, the giddy pair said they both preferred going out to staying in while Tilly admitted she likes her mum’s cooking more than her dad’s famous dishes. After fans questioned her revelation, she later revealed that she much prefers plain food over spicy food, and this is the reason why she’s not a huge fan of Gordon’s cooking. "That makes sense, just

because her dad is a chef doesn’t mean she has to love everything he makes," defended one fan in the comment section. "Bit weird having a dad as a chef and not liking his food. Everyone else could only dream of that!" another debated. While a third added: "Tilly how

could you not enjoy your dad’s cooking? That’s crazy!" Gordon shares five children with his wife Tana, 46, who has written several cookery books. The happily married couple share Jack and Holly, 20, Megan, 22, Tilly, 19, and 18-month-old Oscar.

Common Causes of Road Rage For the majority of motorists, driving in a courteous manner is the most natural way to progress, however, even though it is the season to be jolly, there are occasions when a normally calm driver sees red and is transformed into a monster. Road rage can affect everybody, but most of the time the most frustrating causes of an increase in stress levels are caused by other people,

often unintentionally, but sometimes by those few drivers whose selfish and almost bullying attitude poses a risk to everybody on the road. Amongst the most common bad habits is “aggressive driving”, defined as “any ways that directly or indirectly affect both pedestrians and drivers and cause, harm or damage to other people moving at the

same time where traffic flows”. In high-traffic situations, when there are many drivers who interact at the same time, there is often an increase in aggressive behaviour by some, but this is not necessarily a new phenomenon as it has been present almost as long as roads and cars themselves have existed. Social factors largely determine this aggressiveness. Haste, noisy environments, many people in a confined space, stress that accompanies our daily lives, are all situations that increase our aggressiveness behind the wheel, according to a recent report by LegalCar. Their report offers two main reasons why this aggressiveness increases. When driving a car without being aware of the many psychophysiological mechanisms that will be useful to strengthen the capacity to react in time to adversity when we are driving, and the increase caused by drivers being seemingly unpunished for their actions. Many of the elements that influence the violent reactions behind the wheel have to do with stereotypes. For example, some people react aggressively on the grounds of sex against women, against novice and older drivers. In addition, racism and even a person´s clothing can cause an increase in driver aggression. Other driver´s actions such as seeing a driver using a mobile phone or carrying out a seemingly dangerous or unnecessary manoeuvre, or speeding, can all increase the stresses of driving. Many of these factors are illegal, as they can all be extremely dangerous, and so we will look at some of the most common mistakes, in the hope that if we are aware of some of the factors that can cause road rage, we can avoid creating the situation

ourselves, either unintentionally or otherwise. Some of the most common avoidable “mistakes” that can lead to road rage include blocking junctions, such as a vehicle stopping in the middle of a crossroads when their exit wasn´t clear, thus blocking the flow of traffic across the junction when the priority changes. Centre-lane hogging on motorways, or even, in some cases, remaining in the lefthand lane on a motorway. In Spain we drive on the right, in fact as far right as possible, according to the law, and although multiple lanes exist for overtaking, a vehicle must return to the right-hand lane once the move is complete, subject to instructions from signs and signals. Weaving in and out of lanes in a traffic jam causes frustrations, largely as this impedes the flow of the lane that the vehicle is joining and can amplify delays for everybody waiting. Dazzling oncoming vehicles because our headlights are not set correctly or we may have them on full beam unnecessarily. The same applies for fog lights, which should only be used in the case of a severe reduction in visibility. Having alight out is also a frustration for many, and a dangerous and illegal situation too. At night, a car with only one headlight may be confused for a motorcycle. Having a back light or brake light missing can not only cause confusion, it is extremely dangerous, which is why it is illegal. Stealing parking spaces is high on the list of frustrations for many drivers. When you wait patiently for a vehicle to vacate, and another car sneaks in the gap before you can be one of the most frustrating

conditions that drivers find. Trying to sneak past traffic cues by using the hard shoulder or slip road is equally frustrating for many. At these same slip roads, some drivers will actively accelerate in order to prevent a vehicle from joining the main carriageway. This increase in speed also means that your vehicle is heading faster towards a potential collision situation. It is far better to take the courteous option, if possible, and back-off to allow vehicles to join the flow of traffic with you. The same applies for overtaking. A vehicle is only allowed to overtake if it can return to the flow of traffic safely in front of the vehicle it wants to pass. However, if that, or any other vehicle prevents its safe return by perhaps increasing speed, then the situation becomes extremely dangerous. Failing to maintain the correct distance from the vehicle in front is a very dangerous and illegal move, and it is one of the biggest frustrations for many. Maintaining a safe distance is crucial at all times. However, the biggest cause of aggressive behaviour and the biggest frustration for many road users is failing to use indicators. Remember, indicators are there to “indicate” our intentions to other road users. They should be used BEFORE a manoeuvre is carried out. Always remember the basics, Mirror – Signal – Manoeuvre. If you don´t indicate, or if you indicate too late, you are not telling other road users of your intention, creating a potentially dangerous situation, and for that reason you face a fine. The same applies to cancelling your indicators. Make sure they have been cancelled once the move is complete.

Elche CF, Rocket or Slide? On Sunday Elche played at home in the empty 33,500 seater Martinez Valero Stadium. Their opponents were 7th placed Granada who had just returned from their Thursday night Europa League match in Greece against Panthessaloníkios Athlitikós Ómilos Konstantinopolitón or PAOK for short. Granada have 1 more game to play in their Europa League group E, but they have already qualified for the next stage.

Monday’s ‘Bowmaker’ (Don’t forget that’s the best three scores out of four to count) was won by Nigel Price, Reg Akehurst, Yvonne Phipps and Dave Pulling. With a very impressive 122 points they were just six short of the record set back in 2018. With all eyes looking forward to Wednesday’s ‘Pairs Club Championship’ it was pure coincidence that Lindsay Forbes and I were drawn out once again to partner each other, having only just recently won the ‘Pairs Matchplay Trophy’. Starting as firm favourites it was rumoured that Ladbrookes were refusing to accept any more bets on our winning this time out! Alas it was not to be. With a total of 40 points we didn’t even make it into the top three places. A good outside bet though would have been on Alan Douglas and Mike Mahony as

they took the title with a sparkling 47 points. Behind them were Olga Douglas and Dave Pullingon 45 and in third place, with 43 points, it was Nigel Price and Nora Betts. Friday and it was 2 from 4 to count with all on the par 5’s. I certainly had a game of 2 halves; 23 points going out and only 7 coming back! Winning, with 99 points were Bryen Neal, John Shervell, Petina Murray and Nick Campbell. Just one point behind them were Lindsay Forbes, Mike Mahony, Andrea Martin and (making his first appearance on the leader board) John Halliday. Apparently Heinz Lei said to his caddy, ‘I’m going to drown myself in the lake’. To which the reply was, ‘Think you can keep your head down that long? Pues hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell

This was a pivotal match for Elche CF, a win would see them rocket to 7th place and a defeat would see them slide to 13th place. Unfortunately the visiting Andaulsian team was the clear dominator. They played with more intent than the home team, although both lacked real goal opportunities. Granada had their first chance after 6 minutes with a great header from Rangel Herrera. He powered the ball to the bottom corner, but Badia was not to be beaten and once again his secured hands made a sensational save. Then it was Elche's turn. From a corner kick, Verdú had an unbeatable chance as he controlled the ball first with his chest before forcefully volleying. The visiting goalie was equally alert and made a magnificent move to repel the shot. As the first half progressed,

Elche looked more comfortable, but they still did not worry the Andalusians. The first and only goal of the game came on the 42nd minute. Darwin Machis charged down the right wing leaving his Franjiverde defender in his wake and sent a pin point accurate pass to Luis Suárez who slotted the ball in at the near post. The half time score of 0-1 did not change as the game lost rhythm and momentum, with continuous interruptions. Both teams had a couple of chances, the most memorable one coming

from Granada's former Real Madrid player, Roberto Soldado. Elche CF will take on 2nd place Atletico Madrid on Saturday the 19th December at 14:00 in the Wanda Metropolitano. They have two more games left this year, against Osasuna and Real Madrid. As soon as spectators are allowed back into the stadiums, EuroTourGuide will once again be offering Coach Tours with Match Tickets to support Elche CF.
