Travel chaos as countries close borders to UK passengers See Main Advert on page 26-27

There was travel chaos at ports and airports in the UK on Monday as countries around the world closed borders to passengers from the UK due to the appearance of a new strain of Coronavirus in the United Kingdom

which is described as “out of control”. The Government of Spain indicated on Sunday that it will carry out stricter verifications of PCR tests at airports and ports for anyone entering Spain from the UK. At the time of going to press, the Spanish government had ruled out suspending flights and ferries from the UK but over the weekend, the Netherlands, Belgium, Bulgaria, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Ireland, France, Sweden, Canada, Turkey and Hong Kong decided to close borders to UK passengers in a bid to stop the spread of the new, more infectious, strain of coronavirus. India will suspend inbound UK flights from midnight tonight (Tuesday) while Israel, Iran, Croatia, Argentina, Chile, Morocco and Kuwait have also imposed

restrictions on UK travel. Saudi Arabia has suspended all international flights for one week because of the pandemic. Outbound train services through the Channel Tunnel have also been halted. France closed its border with the UK for 48 hours, with no lorries or ferry passengers able to sail from the port of Dover. Lorries bound for Spain, via France, were stuck in queues at UK ports with many giving up and turning back. Ireland banned passengers on flights and ferries for 48 hours, but will allow freight to keep supply chains open. EU member states met on Monday to coordinate an approach to the developing situation but it was not confirmed when we went to press if Spain will continue to allow UK passengers to arrive as per Sunday’s

announcement. Advice across the board is to check with your airline or ferry company before beginning your journey. The Spanish Government emphasised that, in order to travel to Spain “it is mandatory that all passengers from countries or areas at risk undergo a Diagnostic Test for Active Infection, PDIA, for SARS-Cov-2 in the previous seventytwo hours upon arrival with a negative result.” Rule reversal Meanwhile in the Valencian Community, there has been a reversal of the decision to relax rules over Christmas. Despite the hope that people could meet in groups of 10 and the planned relaxing of curfew restrictions over Christmas, the Valencian Government has decided at the last minute to reverse the decision to relax the rules this festive season. It emerged late last week that rather than being relaxed, the midnight curfew will now be brought forward to 11pm (with the exception of Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, when it will be midnight). Meetings are restricted to six people and only those returning to their habitual place of residence may cross the border into the Valencian Community. With the expectation that groups of ten would be allowed to meet on certain days over Christmas, and that the curfew would be extended until 1.30am, many people were also expecting the arrival of close friends and family from elsewhere in Spain as community borders were set to open for special occasions. With the reversal of the rules now confirmed, families are hastily rearranging and in some cases cancelling plans for

Christmas. Restaurants, having already suffered the impact of the global pandemic over the last nine months, are also scrambling to change table plans to reflect the new rules. Many had taken bookings for groups of ten over Christmas and New Year and with the regulations stating that groups be from two households only, festive bookings have been thrown into chaos. The perimeter closure will not be relaxed and as such it is not allowed to leave or enter the Valencian community except to return to the habitual place of residence. Puig indicated that the government took a u-turn on its decision due to "the speed of growth of infections", which forced the regional government to make these changes a week before Christmas for which he said he was sorry. According to Health Minister Barceló, infections began to subside in early

November but after four weeks of decline they rose again in early December. The Minister claimed that in the absence of a more exhaustive analysis, the increase in transmission could have been due to a "relaxation in measures" and specified that 90% of the outbreaks had been traced to social and family gatherings. Despite the increase in cases both Puig and Barceló made it clear that the Community has had a lower incidence than the rest of Spain and said that it would be "unfair to blame anyone" . "Valencian society has done well," Puig remarked. Puig also announced that the Valencian Community is ready to receive, store and distribute 60,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine in the coming days. "We do not know the time or day for the first vaccines, but we are ready.”

Get your floor clause claims in now Spain’s Ministry of Consumer Affairs has caused controversy with a shock announcement on mortgage-related cases against banks. The government department issued a notice via social media that the final deadline for all such claims would be 21st January 2021. The surprising decision has riled consumer law experts, as well as those across the property sector. The issue in question relates to an oft-included clause in mortgage contracts issued by Spanish banks. The clause requires the mortgage holder to pay all mortgage-related expenses, including IAJD tax (mortgage tax/stamp duty), notary and land registry fees. However, on 21st January 2016, the Supreme Court ruled that this was unfair on the mortgage holder and that the cost should not be solely borne by them. This was because many of those expenses were in place in

order to protect the bank issuing the mortgage, rather than the borrower. The 2016 ruling opened the doors for mortgage holders to begin claiming such expenses – often amounting to several thousand euros – back from their banks. A ruling on 26th October 2020 then clarified further that the expenses should be split as: Notary split equally between the lender and the borrower, IAJD

paid 100 percent by the borrower, registration and management paid 100 percent by the lender. Now, less than two months after this clarification, the government has announced a final deadline for making claims of 21st January 2021 (this being five years after the initial ruling). This is a move that has caused surprise and consternation as it was completely unexpected. The announcement itself, with its talk of judicial deadlines, is very unusual. There was already a huge lack of clarity on this issue and the deadline announcement could be a considerable Christmas gift to the banks and a move that some believe is being made to counteract some of the monetary losses they have suffered due to the Covid pandemic. Anyone wishing to make a claim or who believes they may have a valid claim is being urged to seek professional advice immediately.

Covid free Christmas

Avalon Funeral Plans celebrates a year of fundraising for local charities Employees at Avalon Funeral Plans are celebrating a year of successful fundraising for local charities across the region throughout 2020 - a year in which the pandemic's impacts mean charities and their services are more reliant on fundraising than ever before.

Christmas dinner is just around the corner and everyone is hoping to be able to celebrate with at least some of their loved ones and, above all, without anyone getting or spreading the COVID-19 virus. Doctors and other health workers are publishing lots of tips to keep your, your family and close friends as safe as possible over the festive period... Right at the top of the list is avoiding all unnecessary contact with other people in the days leading up to Christmas, and always using a mask when in the company of others. Specifically with the Christmas meal in mind, the Spanish Association of Paediatricians (AEP) has given the following advice to minimise risks: apart from the already well-established recommendations about not mixing with people you don't live with, respecting the safety distance and always using a mask, ventilate your home as much and as often as possible, increase social distancing where elderly people are concerned, do not share food, have pre-dinner drinks standing up and wherever possible out of

doors and do not clink glasses when making a toast. This year is going to be a very different year when it comes to celebrating Christmas and people should be as careful as possible when it comes to the safety of the elderly and the very young in the home. In general, "caution and common sense are this year's festive watchwords" said María García-Onieva, secretary of the AEP. Dr José Manuel Moreno Villares, also of the AEP, recommended that this year "the elderly and the very young should not share the same table unless basic safety measures can be adhered to or unless they usually live together". Shortening the time people are sat at the table for meals is also being advised. People should only be sat close to one another for as long as strictly necessary to finish their meal. Hence the advice to have the aperitif standing up, with everyone respecting the safety distance between one another; wherever possible, a distance of 1.5 metres between people is recommended around the table, with the person opposite in zig zag pattern.

Every year, Avalon employees commit to supporting charities across the regions in which they operate and, despite the challenges 2020 brought to companies and expats alike, this year was no different. Whether it’s making donations or attending and sponsoring local events to raise funds, their employees are dedicated to making a difference to the charities they support. One such charity is Help at Home, Costa Blanca. Help at Home provide support to vulnerable people in the local expat community including advice on accessing benefits and carers and care homes, alongside providing a friendly face to talk to. Avalon also supports selected charities to showcase their great work by supporting the funding of their events and charity shops, as they so with Lions La Cala and Lions Diabetic Support Group who provide important support for the local community in Malaga, including caring for the environment, and help for vulnerable people. In addition to this, they have also supported the Samaritans in Spain at a

time when the need for access to mental health charities and services are as important as ever. Numerous other charities have been supported by Avalon across the year including Easy Horse Care, a rescue centre for neglected horses, ponies and donkeys; The Royal British Legion who provide support for the armed forces community; and Alzheimer and Dementia Support International (ADSI) who support people living with Alzheimer's and dementia and their carers, to name but a few. This year’s charity fundraising follows a period of success for Avalon in what has been a challenging year for many businesses. They recently took home the coveted title of ‘Best Funeral Plan Provider’ for the second year running at the 2020 Personal Finance Awards. This award recognises Avalon’s dedication to its customers, as well as the high standard of its customer service. Speaking about this year’s fundraising efforts, Avalon’s CEO, Susan Stevenson, said: “Caring for families is a fundamental part of what we do, and this year we have provided peace of mind for thousands of bereaved families through our funeral plans. We have seen first-hand the impact of the pandemic on families and charities and it was more important than ever this year that we continue to support charities across the region so they can continue to provide support

to the people who need it most. We are so proud to be able to support a large variety of charities across the regionwho all provide such important services to support their local communities. From charities that provide support to vulnerable people, our armed forces, or animal rescue centres, we are pleased that every penny donated to these charities will go towards helping the communities who need it most” A spokesperson from Help at Home said ‘We are delighted with the support we will receive from Avalon. Avalon have donated a stand and various marketing aids to help the team when they are doing events and raising money for the charity.’ Avalon has over 26 years’ experience providing funeral plans for more than 85,000 customers across the UK and Europe and is the most trusted funeral plan provider*. The company provides specialist expat funeral plans, working in partnership with local funeral directors, so families always have support closeby. Regulated in the UK by the Funeral Planning Authority (FPA), Avalon is based in the UK and Spain and operates across Europe. "It's best if just one person serves the food and that they do so with a mask on. Try to avoid shared platters or eating out of the same dish, and, although it's a sad to have to say this, no clinking of glasses", says Dr Moreno Villares. Regular hand-washing with soap and water is still the order of the day, and we are being reminded to keep bottles of antiviral gel in different parts of the house, especially near the dining table, but well out of reach of small children.

Spain’s parliament votes to legalise euthanasia Spain’s parliament has voted to approve a bill that will allow physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia for long-suffering patients of incurable diseases or unbearable permanent conditions. The bill, which was backed by Spain’s leftwing coalition government and several other parties, passed in a 198-138 vote. The conservative Popular Party and the far-right Vox party voted “No.” The bill will now continue its legislative journey, facing a vote in the Senate where it is also expected to pass. According to the draft of the law approved by the lower house, it won’t go into effect until three months after being published in the government gazette. “As a society, we cannot remain impassive when faced with the intolerable pain that many people suffer,” Spanish Health Minister Salvador Illa told lawmakers. Spain is following the footsteps of Iberian Peninsula neighbor Portugal, whose parliament approved similar bills to legalize physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia in February. Those bills

have yet to become law and could yet face resistance from Portugal’s president. Euthanasia - when a doctor

directly administers fatal drugs to a patient - is legal in Belgium, Canada, Colombia, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Switzerland. In some U.S. states, medicallyassisted suicide - where patients administer the lethal drug themselves, under medical supervision — is permitted. A small group of people gathered outside Madrid’s lower house of parliament waving black flags with skulls and crossbones to protest the bill. Groups that support legislation to legalize medically assisted suicide planned

rallies in cities across the country to celebrate the passing of the bill. The law will allow health professionals, both public and private, to assist patients who express their wish to die rather than continue suffering “a serious and incurable disease” or from a “debilitating and chronic condition” the person considers “unbearable.” Patients must ask to die on four different occasions during the process, which can last over a month. The first two requests must be in writing and submitted over two weeks apart. The patient must reaffirm that request a third time after consulting with a doctor and a fourth time just before undergoing the procedure to end his or her life. The process must be overseen by a medical team led by a physician and another doctor who acts as an external supervisor. An oversight board in each region must approve requests. The person asking to exercise his or her right to die must be a Spanish citizen or resident, of adult age, and able to make rational decisions. The law will also allow any medical worker to refuse to participate on grounds of belief.

Spain’s Brexit fears The price of sovereignty will be measured in euros and pounds starting on 1st January. If there is no post-Brexit deal, trade relations between the United Kingdom and the European Union will fall under the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO), involving average tariffs of around 7 percent. But regardless of whether there is a deal or not, Spain will be more exposed to the British economy’s ups and downs than many other European countries, according to the Bank of Spain. In a report released earlier this month, the central bank said that Spain’s trade exposure to the UK is “significant,” noting that Spanish exports of goods and services to Britain accounted for 9.6 percent of total exports in 2019, representing 3.4 percent of Spain’s gross domestic product (GDP). This figure is higher than in Germany, France or Italy. The report also underscored the importance of British tourism to Spain: the UK is the country of origin of a majority of tourists, accounting for 21 percent of all arrivals and 19 percent of tourist spending in 2019. It also noted that British nationals are the main foreign buyers of homes in Spain, representing 14 percent of all purchases by nonresidents last year. Brexit has already weakened the value of the pound, reducing Britons’ purchasing power. And if the UK crashes out of the EU, it could have an even bigger impact on its currency. This, coupled with potential issues regarding air links between Britain and Europe, could hurt tourism. And Spain has a lot to

lose on this front. British nationals accounted for 21 percent of all arrivals and 19 percent of spending in 2019. Over 18 million British travelers visited Spain last year. According to the Bank of Spain, the Spanish regions that would be most intensely affected in a tariffs scenario are Murcia, Valencia, Galicia and Aragón, due to the significant weight of the British market in their exports. But the Spanish employer organization CEOE warns that even a post-Brexit deal will not solve everything. According to this group, even if deal talks are successful, the contents of the resulting agreement are likely to be “modest or low-quality, compared with other trade agreements signed by the EU, sometimes with more faraway countries.” The CEOE is concerned about matters that go beyond tariffs, such as public procurement, getting professional degrees recognized (for engineers and architects, for instance), technical barriers to trade, food safety, or intellectual

property, among others. “Once the transitional period ends at midnight on December 31, the implications for Spanish businesses will be negative, deal or no deal,” said the CEOE. Murcia vulnerable When the Bank of Spain said that Murcia could be highly vulnerable to Brexit, it was thinking of the Mediterranean region’s powerful fruit and vegetable industry. According to the central bank’s study, Murcia’s exports to the UK accounted for over 3 percent of the region’s GDP. According to the Spanish Federation of Fruit and Vegetable Producers and Exporters (Fepex), the British market ranks third after Germany and France. Last year, 1.5 million tons of produce were exported to the UK, including red berries, clementines and tomatoes. Meanwhile, 88 Spanish fishing boats employing around 2,150 crewmembers and working in British waters are anxiously awaiting the outcome of talks.

As we are in Winter, many homeowners think that they should take their property off the market or not put their home on the market at all right now and wait for Spring, as buyers will be too busy preparing for Christmas. This is not true! You will be helping other homeowners sell their homes before yours, due to the fact that buyers won’t even have the opportunity of looking at yours if you’re not on the market in the first place. Some properties actually show better during Winter. Especially if they are South facing. Winter sun purchasers often have “South facing” at the top of their wish list! If your property is on the market and you’re tempted to remove it until Spring, find your willpower and stay the course. There is always lower inventory during the Winter. If you wait until Spring to list your property for sale, you’ll be competing with everyone else that has that very same opinion. You don’t want to be competing

Tenerife closes borders for 15 days banning holidays Holidays to the Canary Islands have been dealt yet another blow today after it was announced the popular holiday island of Tenerife closed its borders for 15 days from Friday (18th December). Tenerife is to close its borders for 15 days from midnight on Friday in a shock new move to fight rising cases of coronavirus. Holidays to the island will no longer be allowed. How it will impact those with flight and getaways booked is not yet clear. The news was announced by the president of the Canary government, Angel Victor Torres. There will be exceptions to the rule but having a holiday will not be one of them. Torres said on Wednesday that Tenerife has had to take exceptional measures to stop the advance of COVID-19. Tenerife has been on red traffic light alert for the last fortnight. Covid cases have gone from well below the national average to among the highest in Spain. The decision was taken at an extraordinary council meeting and will last until the end of December at least, therefore covering Christmas and the New Year. Many prospective holiday makers have taken to Twitter to ask how to proceed. "What number do you call? I have already bought flights to Madrid next week and I am not sure if I will be allowed to leave the island. To return I have no problems, I am registered and work in Tenerife, but it is more to go out if they allow me for Christmas reasons with family," one Tenerife resident wrote. "Are you still travelling to Tenerife from

Saturday onwards? Thanks," one hopeful holidaymaker asked airline Jet2, while another asked the carrier: "Can you advise what we need to do? Just arrived in Tenerife yesterday and I hear they are closing their border to tourists. Should we return to BFS straight away? A third quizzed the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO): "Will you now change your advice on the canaries as Tenerife enters lockdown?" The FCDO has yet to change its Spanish advice and airlines have not all yet responded to the news.

As the news was announced TUI said it would update customers if and when changes were made. A TUI spokeswoman said on Thursday: “We’re aware of the news reports regarding the recent announcement that Tenerife will close its borders from Friday, 18th December. We are currently working through what this means for our holiday programme and will update customers as soon as we have more information." The Canary Islands government has already clashed with the mainland over the types of covid tests allowed for entry to the archipelago. Island leaders previously said in their travel advice they

would accept travellers with negative rapid antigen tests. These are considerably cheaper than PCR tests and are "easier to obtain". However, the Spanish government is now set to overrule the controversial decision to allow international travellers entry to the islands on the back of rapid coronavirus tests. Spanish newspapers are reporting Madrid won't allow the Canaries to make this decision and says only full PCR tests are acceptable, not rapid ones. Torres has indicated that the Government is very concerned about the data from Tenerife, especially as the next

fifteen days would have seen one of the highest levels of internal mobility. In September there were 90 cases a day, in October it went to 125 cases, in November it increased to 180 cases while in December the daily average has reached 256 cases for three days, he said. It is understood there will be some exception to entering or leaving Tenerife over the 15 day period, including for health reasons, education, work, going back home, urgent judicial action, taking an official exam which can't be changed, a totally unavoidable event or to look after a dependent.

Minimum wage increase proposed The minimum wage in Spain has once again become the focus of fierce debate within the coalition PSOE / Unidas Podemos government, with calls on one side to raise it again in 2021 being met by pleas on the other side to keep it at 950 euros. The minimum wage (salario mínimo interprofesional or SMI) was raised by the government to 950 euros per month in February last year - a measure that affected over two million workers. Employment Minister, Yolanda Díaz, now wants to increase it again, this time to 1,000 euros per month (in 14 payments) in 2021, a move that has brought criticism from other members of the Government, like the Minister for Economic Affairs,

Nadia Calviño. Trade unions have naturally voiced their support for the motion tabled by Pablo Iglesias's party, which would equate to a 5 percent wage increase. However, other members of the government have underlined the major difficulties currently being faced by many businesses across the country and have expressed their desire to see the minimum wage frozen for the time being, or increased by no more than 0.9 percent, in line with the projected consumer price index rise. The Podemos-controlled Employment Ministry led by Diaz, has distanced itself from and rejected this call for caution from prominent members of the government, and declared its

"outright objection" to a freezing of the minimum salary. On the other side, government ministers and business owners alike are arguing that now, in the middle of an economic crisis brought about by the coronavirus pandemic, is not the moment for such a rise, and that to ask small and medium-sized businesses to make such a considerable financial effort at this point could result in major job losses. The Government has made no secret of the fact that achieving a minimum salary of 1,200 euros by the end of its legislature bringing the country more in line with other EU nations like France, Germany Belgium and the Netherlands - is one of its immovable objectives.

Brits warned to carry residency docs when returning from UK Only residents returning to their home in Spain will be permitted to enter the country after 31st December. This is because once the UK leaves the EU its nationals will no longer be automatically entitled to enter the EU and will only be admitted if virus numbers reduce to what is considered a safe level. People planning journeys for the early part of next year need to be aware that this restriction may

prevent them from entering Europe other than for essential or work-related journeys.

them if they travel over Christmas and return in the new year.

Therefore, only residents returning to their habitual place of residence will be permitted to enter Spain and the British Consulate has warned that all expats that live in Spain and have applied for residency before the 31st December deadline should carry their documentation with

If you live in Spain, but don`t yet have your residency documents, the advice is to have with your any documents that show you live in the country. Such as: TIE application, Spanish work contract, tenancy agreement or pardon

Girl, 12, gives birth after lockdown pregnancy A 12-year-old Spanish girl has given birth at home after her lockdown pregnancy went unnoticed by her family and schoolmates, according to reports. The girl, whose name has not been revealed, gave birth to a baby boy at her mother's house in the northern Spanish region of Cantabria last weekend. Both mother and baby are reportedly in good health, despite the fact it was considered a risky pregnancy and birth due to the girl's age. Local media have reported the father is a 17-yearold boy who is close to the family and was living with them at the time, but this has yet to be

confirmed by officials. The family has not been identified to protect the girl's identity and all of them were shocked at the fact that she turned out to be pregnant at such a young age. Authorities are also investigating the circumstances under which the girl became pregnant. An underage girl cannot give consent to sex, and officials are still trying to find out if she was forced into it by the 17-year-old or another man. She fell pregnant at the beginning of Spain's coronavirus lockdown in March. When lockdown was lifted, the girl returned to school and neither her

teachers nor her fellow classmates noticed that she was pregnant there either. She continued to achieve good academic results at school, and her family have said the baby will be put up for adoption, reports suggest. Emergency services were called after she went into labour and paramedics arrived in time to help with the birth of her son. Mother and child were then taken to the Marques de Valdecilla University Hospital in the city of Santander where a social worker evaluated the situation. The girl has been released home while the baby boy is still at the hospital under surveillance.

104yearold woman recovers from coronavirus in Madrid A centenarian has been discharged from a hospital in Spain after recovering from coronavirus, one year after overcoming influenza. 104-yearold Elena wished for “good health”, with medical staff applauding her as she exited the hospital in Madrid. “I make a wish for good health, may it never be missing. And everything should get fixed, for good,” Elena said.

Alvaro Alejandre de Ona, a doctor at the hospital, said: “She is a 104-year-old patient, who lives at home, she is a survivor. We have had her admitted here mainly because of her age, it was something that worried us. We are very happy. It is always a joy to see something like this end very well.” Elena was in the Covid-19 ward at Gregorio Maranon hospital for

14 days, and is the 4,149th recovered coronavirus patient discharged from the hospital.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP It was crunch time last week, and the week before, and the week before that. However, it appears now it really is the final countdown for a Brexit deal to be done. And sterling strengthened once again as investors became optimistic, up by an average 1% and taking the top spot among other majors. The UK Prime Minister and the President of the European Commission decided to “go the extra mile”, bypassing Sunday’s ‘final’ deadline. Nearly a week on, it is looking more like two miles but the negotiations go on, but if there is no agreement by the end of this weekend the European Parliament will not have time to approve it before the end of December.Investors have become steadily more confident that the PM and the EC President will not jump together over the cliff edge, and that a compromise “skinny” deal will be found, with fish as the main sticking point. This rosy outlook, despite the UK PM continuing to insist a no-deal Brexit was very likely, was much needed for sterling, as the economic data certainly didn’t help. Employment, inflation and retail data was quite unpleasant. UK manufacturing beat expectations with a 37-month high but services missed the cut at 49.9. The UK consumer and producer price index data for November were all lower than forecast, with headline inflation down from 0.7% to 0.3%. The retail price index, which will be reformed dramatically in the future, was 0.9% higher on the year. Sterling edged upwards after the data came out but that was probably coincidence: slowing inflation normally implies a lower currency. Still, the pound went up to its highest level against the US dollar in two and a half years. In

other news investors were not encouraged by the Bank of England’s fairly downbeat assessment of the economic outlook but neither were they surprised. EURO Sterling wasn’t the only currency knocking the US dollar around - the euro still managed to take another cent off the stuttering greenback. Technically, it shows every sign of being able to regain the highs of early 2018 around $1.25, with the prospect of another three US cents above that if the stars line up. Brexit news in Europe took the form of French fish catchers threatening to blockade Calais in the event of a no-deal redistribution of quotas, despite the threatened deployment of a flotilla of British gunboats. Also in focus is Germany, where Chancellor Merkel has instructed most shops and educational establishments to shut down as a counter-Covid measure, with closures lasting until at least 10 January. The government is trying to reduce the impact on the economy by the provision of €15 billion of support to businesses. Eurozone economic data was few and far between this week, and none were relatively shocking. Inflation was unchanged for a third month and in line with analysts’ forecast at -0.3%. Nationally, the rate ranged from Greece’s -2.1% to Slovakia’s 1.6%. The provisional purchasing managers’ indices for the Eurozone were ahead of forecast with the composite close to breakeven at 49.8. German manufacturing at 58.6 was a 34month high. Eurozone industrial production increased by 2.1% in October, leaving it 3.8% lower than the same month last year.

Spain to get €140bn New Year Covid after deal finalised vaccinations in Spain Now that the European Union's budget has been approved, Spain is set to get €140 billion – of which €27bn has already been taken into account in the country's spending for 2021. Of the total due to Spain, €72bn will be transferred directly as a grant rather than a loan, and Pedro Sánchez's government has planned to use it over the next three years. The EU was finally able to convince Hungary and Poland to lift their veto on the 2021-2027 budget, but was already looking into excluding them from the voting process to be able to get the financial plans pushed through. On Thursday, the Council of Europe – currently presided over by Germany – has rubber-stamped the budget and it is now set in stone. Hungary and Poland have, however, bought themselves time: They have filed an appeal with the European Court of Justice over the 'legality' of the terms of the budget, but until a verdict is passed, the funds cannot be held up. The process could take up to two years. National leaders Viktor Orbán's and Mateusz Morawiecki's appeal is based upon the fund distribution to member States being on condition of each of the 27 complying with the Rule of Law, which includes respecting human rights as laid

down in the EU treaties. The aim of the 'Rule of Law' mechanism is to 'protect the European budget and recovery fund against any type of fraud, corruption or conflict of interest' and that its application should not be 'discriminatory', but 'impartial'. Unnamed sources within the EU, however, have assured Spanish national media that the Hungarian and Polish joint appeal is 'little more than hot air', even though it was 'very predictable'. This is because Poland, after Italy and Spain, is set to receive the third-largest sum out of the recovery fund. The deal struck with Hungary and Poland complies with European Parliament's red lines, though, and until the ECJ rules in favour of or against the two dissenting countries, funds will still be paid out in the meantime.

Spain's first consignment of vaccines against Covid-19 should begin to arrive in the country within the next three weeks. Authorisation from both the European and Spanish drug agencies is expected to be granted on December 29th, with vaccines beginning to arrive on 4th January. Vaccination itself will not start until a few days later, once vaccines have been distributed to each of the autonomous communities. The first vaccine expected to be available in Spain is the Pfizer one, which is the one that requires storage at around 80 degrees below zero. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) will meet to analyse the results of the Moderna vaccine on 12th January. If it is deemed acceptable, it could be authorised for use "in a matter of weeks or even hours" according to health minister Salvador Illa. As established in the government's Vaccination Strategy, the first doses will be administered to the four priority groups identified among the population: elderly or disabled people in care-homes, care home personnel, frontline health workers and people in a state of high

dependency outside of the care home system. The Government hopes that this first phase of vaccination will end in March, and it will then continue with the remaining groups into which the population has been divided: people over the age of 64, at-risk individuals, those who work or live in enclosed areas, those at risk for socio-economic reasons, essential workers, teachers, children, teenagers and young people, the adult population at large, pregnant or nursing women, those who are sero-positive for Covid-19. According to this calendar, it is anticipated that 70 percent of the population will be vaccinated by the end of the summer. Meanwhile, several regional authorities are considering tightening restrictions again ahead of the country's Christmas celebrations, after numerous fresh outbreaks of the virus were recorded. Authorities in Valencia have said they are monitoring the situation all the time and are willing and ready to tighten restrictions if hospital figures suggest a need to do so.

Spain could develop coronavirus herd immunity by summer 2021

Spain should achieve herd immunity from COVID-19 by the end of summer 2021 if enough people are vaccinated by then, the health minister said in an interview. Salvador Illa said a vaccination programme will start in January and by the end of the summer more than two thirds of the population of 47 million should be vaccinated. "In Europe, even if it is not the final end, we will be in a very different stage. That is why I think we are at the beginning of the end with this time horizon that I say, from five to six months," he told a Spanish national newspaper. Asked if this meant that Spain would achieve herd immunity, Illa replied: "Yes. It is what the technicians call that, that people have immunity either because they are vaccinated or because they have had the disease." However, Illa cautioned Spaniards against dropping their guard during the Christmas period. Spain has been one of the worst hit countries in Europe by coronavirus.

Christmas dinner around the world No matter where in the world you are, Christmas is about more than tradition and family – it’s also about food. But what is actually served for Christmas dinner varies by country – with commonplace turkeys rarely having a place on the table outside of the UK or US. From Puerto Rican eggnog served in coconut shells to the Swedish egg-andanchovy mixture gubbröra, traditional Christmas dishes from around the world provide an insight into the various ways that people celebrate and indulge on the holiday.... Sweden In Sweden, the Swedish julbord or “Christmas table” usually begins with cold fish dishes, then meats, hot food, and dessert. In most instances, the table features a Christmas ham, boiled then glazed with eggs, breadcrumbs and mustard – and served cold. Apart from the centrepiece, Swedish Christmas dinner usually includes meatballs, lutfisk, a potato and fish dish, and pork sausage. The traditional drink is Glögg, a mulled wine, which is drunk before or after the meal. Puerto Rico In Puerto Rico, the national dish and meat component of the meal is a roast suckling pig known as lechón. The process is quite arduous and requires at least two people turning and watching the pig – often beginning at two in the morning so it is ready in time for Christmas dinner. Morcilla or blood sausage is also served, as are pasteles or

meat pastries. For dessert, tembleque, a coconutbased pudding is perfect when paired with coquito, a Puerto Rican spin on eggnog made with condensed milk, coconut milk and rum. Japan Christmas in Japan revolves around fried chicken – with KFC experiencing its busiest time of the year! The tradition began in 1974 when the chicken brand created an advertising campaign called “Kentucky for Christmas” and it became popular. Most families have to place their Christmas orders weeks in advance to secure their fried chicken meals. In addition, traditional Japanese Christmas also sees Christmas cake eaten, especially strawberry shortcake. Hot sake is also served on the holiday to wash down the meal. Portugal To celebrate the holiday in Portugal, most people eat variations of codfish and boiled potatoes. However, it is the variety of desserts and pastries that take centre stage. There are two types of Christmas cake, Bolo Rei, a nut- and fruit-filled concoction and Bolo Rainha, a variation with no candied fruit, as well as filhoses, fried dough covered in cinnamon and sugar, and Broa, small sweets made from egg yolk and sweet potato. Eastern Europe Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine all offer variations on an intricate 12-dish

Christmas Eve feast. Meat, eggs and milk are all kept off the table by the regulations of the Nativity Fast practised by the Orthodox and Eastern Catholic churches, and while this fast is not so strictly observed as it once was, one can expect to see an array of pescatarian and grain-based dishes laid out on the table. The fish dishes usually involve herring, carp or pike, and mushrooms also frequently appear. Beverages such as dried fruit compote or cranberry kisiel are also common. Germany Christmas in Germany is observed with a dinner involving duck, goose, rabbit or a roast, and sides such as potato and red cabbage dumplings. For dessert, Stollen, a fruit bread of nuts, spices and dried fruit topped with powdered sugar is a traditional favourite, in addition to gingerbread Mattak houses, called pfefferkuchenhaus. As for beverages, Feuerzangenbowle or “fire tong” punch, a hot mulled wine and rum beverage is popular, as is regular mulled wine, called Glühwein. Norway On Christmas Eve, the most popular dish in Norway is roasted pork served with sauerkraut and boiled potatoes. Whole, steamed sheep’s head is also on the menu, with the ear and eye meant to be eaten first while the brain is taken out and served boiled or fried. For dessert, Multekrem is made by

mixing cloudberries with whipped cream and sugar. America In America, Christmas dinner resembles Thanksgiving – there is turkey or ham, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy. For Jewish people living in America, the tradition is to eat Chinese food – with most Chinese restaurants open on the holiday. Greenland In a heart-warming tradition, men serve the women throughout the Christmas meal in Greenland. The meal consists of mattak, strips of whale blubber encased in whale fat, and “kiviak,” a dish of flesh from auks buried in whole sealskin for several months and served once it begins to decompose. A popular dessert is Christmas porridge served with butter and topped with cinnamon and sugar. Jamaica In Jamaica, Christmas dinner is usually prepared the night before, and includes fruits, sorrel, meat and punch. For dinner, the main may be anything from turkey to curry goat or stewed oxtail. Britain Christmas dinner in Britain isn’t complete without turkey, roast potatoes, Brussel sprouts, parsnips, pigs in blankets, stuffing, gravy, and

cranberry sauce. Christmas pudding tops off the end of the feast and there are often mince pies with coffee or tea. And Christmas dinner wouldn’t be complete without mulled wine, although a sparkling wine or champagne Spain Many Spanish have their main celebratory meal on Christmas Eve, while another special meal is eaten on Three Kings’ Day, on 6th January. Entremeses are like an appetiser plate, and are often served at the start of the Christmas or Christmas Eve meal. The plate may contain charcuterie such as ham, chorizo, morcilla (black pudding) and local cheeses such as Manchego. Seafood plays a big part in a Spanish Christmas meal, and is often served as the main course instead turkey. Lobster and prawns are particularly popular, as is a seafood soup or stew as a starter. Cochinillo or roast suckling pig or roas t lanb is another favourite Christmas meal in many parts of Spain. It is cooked until the skin is brown and crispy, and is often cooked on a bed of onions and potatoes. The Roscón de Reyes is the Spanish version of a Christmas cake. Essentially it is a sweet bread ring topped with pieces of candied fruit and sometimes filled with whipped cream. While it’s eaten for the whole Christmas period, it’s traditionally consumed on Three Kings’ Day. No Spanish Christmas meal would be complete without a glass of Cava, the Spanish version of French Champagne.

AA Real Members’ Stories Throughout 2020, each month, the Costa Blanca People has featured a real life story from real people about what it is like to suffer from Alcoholism, what they did to overcome their addiction with alcoholic, and how they lead their lives today on their road of recovery. This month is our last instalment and we would like to offer our sincere thanks to the men and women of the AA here in Spain for sharing their personal stories with us, and our readers, in the hope of helping others overcome their own struggles with addiction. What is AA? Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for AA membership, it is self supporting through its members’ own contributions. AA is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organisation or institution, does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety. An AA Member’s Story... My name is Bridget. I am an alcoholic . I was born and raised in a small village

in the West of Ireland. I had one brother and one sister. My childhood memories are happy ones, despite not having money. My parents worked hard, they never drank alcohol, so I was not exposed to drunkenness. Looking back I see that I was raised in a sheltered environment. Primary school was easy. I rebelled in secondary school. I did not enjoy the drudgery of study. I opted for getting a job. I wanted my own money. At twenty three I met a man of thirty six. He introduced me to brandy and wine. At this point I started on the path to destruction. I did not have any feelings for this man. I did notice, however, that when I sipped the brandy, my feelings toward him changed. I felt a warmth toward him. I felt "madly in love". I got engaged, drank my way through the engagement. My fiancé escaped. The engagement lasted two months I felt relieved. I was also acutely aware that when I drank alcohol, everything around me changed and I felt comfortable. I loved the feeling of "belonging ". I started carrying a half bottle of vodka in my handbag. After a short time the half bottle was not enough. On social occasions I needed vodka in order to be the life and soul of the party. I loved attention. I generally ended up in a drunken mess. Next morning I would swear off drink forever. The progression, in my case was rapid. In those early years a friend suggested that I try Alcoholics Anonymous. I took her advice, started attending meetings, not because I wanted to stop drinking. I only went to

please my family and to get friends off my back. I would stop drinking for a short period, sometimes I survived for three months. Inevitably I would pick up the drink again. Hospitalisations became more frequent. My parents looked on in despair. They visited me in hospital with only one question "why did you drink again?". I never had the answer to that question. I was bewildered. I would always promise them that I would never drink again. When I was making that promise I truly meant it. However, when I began to feel well again that promise did not last. Between hospitalisations I often found myself in frightening situationsawakening to find strangers in my flat. I could not remember where I met those people. I was now experiencing blackouts. One day as I walked downtown , I saw my sister come toward me. When she saw me she crossed to the other side of the street. In that moment I felt deeply ashamed. I knew my sister did not want to associate with me. Something happened shortly after this experience. One day I found myself walking to the nearest telephone kiosk and phoning a member of AA. For the first time in my life I asked for help, knowing that I needed it. The AA member came to my flat. She sat and listened. She did not judge. Instead she shared with me. She became my sponsor. From that day onwards I started to feel hope. In those early days my sponsor was my chosen Higher Power. I willingly took

direction from her. She asked me to read the steps as outlined in THE BIG BOOK OF ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS. As I read I started to feel identification. One day , as I plodded through the mess created in my life through drinking, I saw that I was getting through each day without a drink. Step 2 was clear to me. There was a Power Greater than me. That lead me to doing the other steps. In Step 4 I started to see the "causes and conditions". I started to see plainly why I craved alcohol to give me that sense of belonging. Through the steps I cleared away the wreckage of my past. Today I have maintenance steps, which help me live a sober, useful life. I am happily married. I truly enjoy a life beyond my wildest

dreams. This life "beyond my wildest dreams" is not dependent on wealth and prosperity, rather it is built on self honesty, a growing relationship with my Higher Power, and a feeling of ease with those around me, I am a truly grateful alcoholic. Grateful to the fellowship of AA and to the programme. Do you have a problem with Alcohol? Is Alcohol costing you more than money? Christmas traditions from around the world It’s the most wonderful time of the year. For a couple of weeks every year the world takes on a magic glow, people seem merrier and even winter somehow feels cosy. These weir and wonderful Christmas traditions from around the world guarantee oodles of festive fun... Giant Lantern Festival, Philippines The Giant Lantern Festival (Ligligan Parul Sampernandu) is held each year on the Saturday before Christmas Eve in the city of San Fernando – the “Christmas Capital of the Philippines.” The festival attracts spectators from all over the country and across the globe. Eleven barangays (villages) take part in the festival and competition is fierce as everyone pitches in trying to build the most elaborate lantern. Originally, the lanterns were simple creations around half a metre in diameter, made from ‘papel de hapon’ (Japanese origami paper) and lit by candle. Today, the lanterns are made from a variety of materials and have grown to around six metres in size. They are illuminated by electric bulbs that sparkle in a kaleidoscope of patterns. Goat, Sweden Since 1966, a 13-metre-tall Yule Goat has been built in the center of Gävle’s Castle Square for the Advent, but this Swedish Christmas tradition has unwittingly led to another “tradition” of sorts – people trying to burn it down. Since 1966 the Goat has been successfully burned down 29 times – the most recent destruction was in 2016. If you want to see how the Goat fares

Goat, Sweden

Krampus, Austria

this year when it goes up on 1st December, you can follow its progress on the ‘Visit Gävle’ website through a live video stream. Krampus, Austria A beast-like demon creature that roams city streets frightening kids and punishing the bad ones – nope, this isn’t Halloween, but St. Nicholas’ evil accomplice, Krampus. In Austrian tradition, St. Nicholas rewards nice little boys and girls, while Krampus is said to capture the naughtiest children and whisk them away in his sack. In the first week of December, young men dress up as the Krampus (especially on the eve of St. Nicholas Day) frightening children with clattering chains and bells.

No Brooms, Norway Perhaps one of the most unorthodox Christmas Eve traditions can be found in Norway, where people hide their brooms. It’s a tradition that dates back centuries to when people believed that witches and evil spirits came out on Christmas Eve looking for brooms to ride on. To this day, many people still hide their brooms in the safest place in the house to stop them from being stolen. Day of the Little Candles, Colombia Little Candles’ Day (Día de las Velitas) marks the start of the Christmas season across Colombia. In honour of the Virgin Mary and the Immaculate Conception, people place candles and paper lanterns in their windows, balconies and front

yards. The tradition of candles has grown, and now entire towns and cities across the country are lit up with elaborate displays. Some of the best are found in Quimbaya, where neighbourhoods compete to see who can create the most impressive arrangement. Get your skates on, Venezuela In Venezuela, every Christmas Eve the city’s residents head to church in the early morning – so far, so normal – but, for reasons known only to them, they do so on roller skates. This unique tradition is so popular that roads across the city are closed to cars so that people can skate to church in safety, before heading home for the less-than-traditional Christmas dinner of ‘tamales’ (a wrap made out of

cornmeal dough and stuffed with meat, then steamed). Lighting of National Hanukkah Menorah, Washington, D.C. The Jewish holiday of Hanukkah is celebrated with much fanfare across the United States with one of the most elaborate events taking place on a national stage. Since 1979, a giant ninemetre Menorah has been raised on the White House grounds for the eight days and nights of Hanukkah. The ceremony in Washington, D.C. is marked with speeches, music, activities for kids, and, of course, the lighting of the Menorah. The lighting of the first candle at the White House takes place at 4pm, rain or shine, and an additional candle is lit each successive night.

The role of mouthwashes in our fight against Covid19 Many of our patients will know that we have been recommending the use of mouthwash containing CPC in our fight against the COVID-19 virus. We use it in the surgery before treatments, and recommend our patients to use at home. Mouthwashes play an important role in the daily oral hygiene routine because they have the ability to reach all areas of the oral cavity (gums, palate, less accessible areas) and provide benefits according to their composition: if they contain fluoride they help to remineralise the enamel, if they contain antiseptics they help to control the formation of bacterial plaque, there are also vitamins that help to care for the oral tissues. Numerous studies being carried out on the coronavirus and its ways of spreading seem unanimous in considering the mouth as one of the main access routes of the virus to our organism. The tongue, in particular, is an important site of accumulation of the virus. Given this premise, the need to maintain proper oral hygiene seems obvious. Cetylpyridinium

chloride

(CPC) is a well-known, broad spectrum antimicrobial agent used in over-the-counter rinses to promote dental health. The chemical has antiseptic properties that are effective in killing bacteria and other microorganisms .Cetylpyridinium Chloride (CPC) allows the degradation of the lipid bilayer of the envelope of several strains of influenza virus, which suggests its effectiveness against other viruses with similar envelopes, such as coronaviruses. CPC has a substantivity of between 3 to 5 hours, is soluble in alcohol and in aqueous solutions, can act as a detergent and antiseptic, is not corrosive, neither oxidant and has a neutral pH. Gargling or rinsing with mouthwashes containing cetylpyridinium chloride can therefore lower your mouth's viral load. However, keep in mind that those recommended for home and clinical use are those with a 0.05% concentration of cetylpyridinium chloride. Therefore, when choosing the mouthwash with which you are going to take care of your oral health, make sure that its composition includes this percentage of CPC.

Mouthwashes that contain alcohol (ethanol), typically at 1114%, are unlikely to be effective against viruses at this concentration and time relevant to mouthwash use. We recommend daily use of the mouthwash and also if you have left your home for a trip to a restaurant, or to the shops, gargle on your return home. Studies for COVID-19 suggest the viral load may be reduced in the mouth for up to six hours by using mouthwashes containing CPC. The findings indicate that mouthwash could become an important addition to other protective measures like handwashing, physical distancing and mask wearing in our fight against the spread of the virus . Hopefully the introduction of the vaccine along with our own measures will keep us and our families free from COVID-19. I wish you all a safe and healthy Christmas and hopefully a virus free 2021. Carrying a Load while driving - including driving consisting of emergency braking or turning suddenly. Not project from your vehicle in a way that is likely to injure a person, obstruct the path of other drivers or pedestrians, or damage another vehicle or anything else. Be restrained using an appropriate load restraint method. Anything on the back seats must be secured with the seat belt.

You may be getting set to do your very own Santa run with gifts for all your friends and family, but if you are carrying a load in your car it is essential that it is secure. If you are driving a vehicle that is carrying a load in the car, you must make sure that the load is restrained properly. Load restraint is not just about making sure that the load does not come off —it is also about making sure that the load does not shift in a way that makes the vehicle unsafe to handle or allows the load to crash into the driver’s cabin, which may cause injury or death. Please restrain the load properly, if you

have a traffic accident, you could have serious injuries caused by the load you carry. The Spanish Traffic Law requires that any load carried on or in your vehicle must:

Be secured so it will not move or fall from your vehicle

the hospital bed to the treatment room,” which could be very frustrating and nervous for the young patients. “We want our technology to help improve the lives of our customers in various mobility spaces beyond the roads,” Jinmo Lee, senior research engineer at Hyundai Motor, comments. “We hope the EAVC technology on the minicar will provide a fun, safe mobility experience for young patients and help improve their health outcomes.” In a promotional video, the little electric car helps an anxious patient to be better emotionally prepared for treatment. The zero-emission vehicle interacts with the kid depending on its mood. “The hospital is very excited to have such a technology available for kids,” head of the Pediatric Cardiology Department at SJD hospital, Joan Sanchez de Toledo, adds. “This will dramatically change the way patients will face treatment.”

When Santa is out and about with his sleigh, he always makes sure his reindeer are secure. The same applies when we´re carrying animals in our car, they too must be secure. There is a specific offence in the road traffic regulations: Insecure Animals in the Vehicle. Having an animal in the vehicle that could interfere with the driver can result in a fine, so a dog sat loose on the front seat for example is not allowed. Carrying animals which are not properly restrained is dangerous to them too. The

same applies for cases, cages, and boxes with the animal inside, they too must be properly secured. The fine for carrying an animal in an insecure manner is 80 euro. The reason is given that animals are unpredictable, especially in environments they are unsure of or not used to. If loose, they could interfere with the driver´s ability or visibility. In the event of a crash, the animal would suffer considerable injury and, most likely, death.

‘White Stick’ Variations Being Aware of Impairments We might already be aware that if we see a person holding or walking carrying a long, white stick that it indicates the person has visibility problems, but did you know there are variations and different colours.

but those using these sticks, or assistance animals, should be afforded even greater care. The sticks and dogs are used to assist them in navigating their way around their otherwise restrictive world, but they also serve as an indication to others of their particular impairment

Green stick - Person with visual impairment: Poor vision. White stick - Person with visual disability: Blindness. Red and white striped stick: Deaf and blind person.

Not be placed in a way that makes your vehicle unstable or unsafe.

Hyundai Mini 45 at Barcelona Children's Hospital

In October this year, Hyundai unveiled its smallest electric vehicle to date. At the time, the automaker didn’t give the cute EV an actual name but now it’s returning as the mini 45 in a heartwarming new role. Hyundai has decided to give patients at the SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital in Spain at least a few smiles in these difficult times by giving them the chance to ride in the mini EV. The goal of the South Korean team was to to the children at ease and make them giggle by using its advanced Emotion Adaptive Vehicle Control (EAVC) system. The technology combines information from different sensors measuring heart rate, respiratory rate, facial expressions, and others to create an atmosphere that’s better suited for the driver according to his mood. In this application, it is installed in the mini 45 EV that’s been donated to the hospital and will be used for “the journey from

It is advisable that you do not carry anything in the passenger area of a car, please use the boot. In case you need to carry load in the vehicle, use the seat belt to ensure the load, and if you carry heavy things, use a car net, it is forbidden to take a heavy load without a load restraint net.

Truck-makers to end combustion engine in Europe by 2040 September marked the first time in history when hybrid, plug-in, and fully electric cars combined outsold diesels in Europe. There’s little doubt this trend will expand even further in the coming months and years, as the Old continent is preparing for zero-emission mobility by the middle of the century. Some of the world’s largest truck-makers have also just agreed the sector will go CO2-free relatively soon. Daimler, Scania, Man, Volvo, Daf, Iveco, and Ford have signed a pledge to stop selling vehicles with internal combustion engines by 2040, a full decade earlier than initially planned. The industry aims to spend between €50bn and €100bn on developing hydrogen, battery, and clean fuel technologies. “If we can make this happen, we need to work all together,” Scania chief executive Henrik Henriksson, who also chairs ACEA’s commercial vehicle board, told the Financial Times. The carmaker association is working with the Germanfunded Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research on the best technologies and approaches, which include higher taxes on carbon across the continent. The industry divides heavy-duty

transportation into two main segments inner-city deliveries and long-distance haulage. The former can be more easily pushed towards zero-emission operations but the latter is more dependable on combustion engines because of the long distances and charging times. “It’s the backbone of any society in the world today, but we have to recognize that they are very dependent on the internal combustion engines to transport all the goods of every industry,” Professor Johan Rockström, director of the Potsdam Institute, commented about heavy trucks. All this probably means there will be diversification when it comes to the green technologies for the large trucks of tomorrow. Battery tech will be preserved for in-city deliveries, while hydrogen is expected to be a more likely scenario for the largest longdistance trucks. Biofuels are seen as a short-term solution. “There is no silver bullet; it won’t be that one technology will rule everything, there will be parallel technologies over time. They will come in different paces, but if we sit and wait for the perfect technology to emerge we will burn the planet,” Henriksson added

Honda recalls 1.79 million vehicles worldwide for safety issues Honda is recalling 1.79 million vehicles worldwide in four separate campaigns, including some linked to reported fires. The Japanese automaker said one recall covers 268,000 2002-2006 model year CR-V vehicles to replace power window master switches. Honda said there had been no reported injuries, but 16 fires reported related to the issue. Honda conducted a prior recall of the power window master switches in 2012. The new recall is in response to moisturerelated failures of switches repaired under the previous campaign. Honda is also recalling about 735,000 2018-2020 Accord, Accord Hybrid and 2019-2020 Insight vehicles to update the Body Control Module software. A programming flaw could disrupt communication causing illumination of several warning lights and malfunction of electronic components, it said, including "the rear view camera display, turn signals and windshield wipers." Honda is also issuing two recalls covering 430,000 vehicles with significant road salt use to inspect and potentially replace front drive shafts. Both are in response to possible breakage of the drive shafts due to corrosion. No injuries have been reported in relation any of the recalls, the company said. Honda said repair parts are not available for all vehicles involved in the drive shaft recalls. The recalls cover some 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid, 2007-2014 Honda Fit, 2013-2015 Acura ILX 2013 Acura ILX Hybrid and 2013-2015 Honda Accord vehicles. No crashes have been reported in the drive shaft or software recalls.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

What I would have given for Uncle Roy to have uttered the words, “the better team lost” after Crystal Palace’s 7-0 thumping at home to Liverpool in the Premier League. After all, that’s what you are meant to deadpan into the camera after you’ve been beaten by Jurgen Klopp’s champions, isn’t it? Saturday’s early kick-off was refreshing in many ways. Firstly, Liverpool were given that slot once again despite them having to play in a very important game on Wednesday night and, for once, Kloppo didn’t have a moan about it after the match - it’s amazing what a 7-0 win does for your mood. Secondly, it was great to see some goals in the 12:30 game which (traditionally, and there are probably a million recent facts that I’ve forgotten) are typically quite dull. Dull this one was not - even before kickoff there was a mini-drama as Mo Salah was benched. The conspiracy theorists like myself wanted to believe it was because Salah had not ruled out a move to Real Madrid or Barcelona in the future in an interview with a Spanish paper. He’d also said he’d been ‘disappointed’ not to skipper the Reds a couple of weeks ago. Yeah, with that evidence it was more likely Klopp wanted to give him a rest. Not that Liverpool needed him - they were already very home and dry by the time Salah came on to help himself to the goods on offer. Sadio Mane was absolutely gutted to be replaced and you could understand why. Seven out of eight shots went in - and if they hadn’t all been pretty fine you’d have wondered what Palace’s keeper had been up to.

Tottenham have been labelled as the team looking to win the title by nicking games here and there and keeping it tight at the back but given they’ve not let a goal in for 628 Premier League minutes, surely it’s Man City that are most deserving of the ‘throw-back to when football was different’ mantel? As Ralph said, Southampton played better here than when they beat City 1-0 last season and the Saints will be ruing the missed opportunity to further their worryingly-real Champions League qualification credentials. Not a lot seems to have been made of either incident, but this very confused armchair analyst felt that Hassenhutl’s lot could have had two penalties. The first was when Ruben Dias’ boot ended up very close to Danny Ings’ eyebrows - anywhere else on the pitch, that’s given as a free-kick even if Ings was ducking into the ball ever-soslightly. And as for the handball shout against Raheem Sterling - I’m that lost on what is and what isn’t nowadays that I’m probably wrong in thinking that was a nailed-on penalty. City are picking up points without hitting their straps fully. And for that alone, the rest of the front-runners should be looking nervously over their shoulders. Two of those front-runners are Jose’s Tottenham and Brendan’s Leicester City and those two got down to a game of football chess on Sunday. Now, chess would be an absolutely terrible sport to watch on TV and the first half of this battle really wasn’t much better. The main thing I found myself pondering, as the first 45 was petering out, was how utterly Arsenal it was to go to St-Etienne for a defender and come back with William Saliba when Wesley Fofana was hiding in plain sight - and then Serge Aurier rewound the clock to his pre-Jose days.

This was the match of the weekend that certainly posed many a question - Is there a better striker playing against alleged bigger/better teams than Jamie Vardy? Probably not. Does Gareth Bale look like someone who actually wants to play club football? Could he become the first international-only footballer? And did the best team lose this one too, Jose, eh? If you are wondering whether I am slowly backing away from my statement that Tottenham can win the title this season yes, yes I am. And not even that slowly. So, here’s another question - if they don’t sack him, could Arsenal actually go down? They are in dire straits - they will spend Christmas in the bottom six after another defeat, this time to Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton and there are rumours of a very, very divided dressing room. Answer me this, too - when Mikel Arteta and Ancelotti took over on pretty much the same day a year ago you’d have naturally expected the two teams to be the other way round when you look at the Premier League table today, wouldn’t you? Arsenal went into this one without their skipper, Yo-Pierre and, unfortunately for them, with Willian. The Brazilian is going some to be the biggest Brazilian waste-ofspace in an Arsenal shirt given the competition David Luiz gives him, but the ex-Chelsea man is doing what he can to earn that title. No shots, no completed crosses, no successful take-ons, no tackles and no successful duels is what Willian returned in his afternoon’s work on Merseyside. Is he the worst Premier League signing based on expectation vs actual return? Quite possibly. Scott McTominay dominating the midfield like Paul Pogba should and could wasn’t a great look for Pogba or Leeds United at Old Trafford. The Scot helped

himself to a brace within the first four minutes as United waited for Leeds to expose themselves horribly, do silly things and concede goals - six of them in total. As expected, Leeds did get a couple and should have had several more - but if six wins in the last seven Premier League matches is a crisis at United then Arsenal would love that kind of crisis. Is Callum Wilson the kind of striker that could keep Newcastle up this season? And by that, I don’t mean the kind of striker that takes a hilarious tumble the second he gets in the area despite knowing he was fouled three seconds before - because we all can see he is also that. To be fair, he needs to be - at the moment, there are three ex-Bournemouth players who seemed to make decent moves preseason to get another stab at Premier League life and, right now, you’d do well to convince me that Wilson, Ryan Fraser and, of course, Aaron Ramsdale won’t be getting back-to-back drops. Scott Parker was right to be ‘confused’ at how anyone can watch that replay so many times, then go back for one final look and still decide that the foul happened inside the area. But hey, you know, VAR. If there was one team that might have a soft-enough middle for Sheffield United to pick up a win against, you’d have probably suggested Brighton (not Manchester United on Thursday…) were that team. And when the Blades found an edge and scored, they must have thought that they might finally win a Premier League game. Yeah, not so much. Danny Welbeck is back and breaking hearts. And Brighton spectacularly contrived not to get all three deep into injury-time in the finest goalmouth scramble of the weekend. 1-0 down within five minutes and his skipper sent off before half time. Has Big Sam really missed it that much?
