BREXIT: What happens now? See Main Advert on page 26-27

To answer the many questions Britons have about Brexit, their legal living status in Spain and many other issues, the British government has asked the Costa Blanca People to share a series of questions and answers with our readers. This information is the most up to date

available, and is considered accurate at the time of going to press. However, with some issues still being negotiatied, both the Costa Blanca People and the British Embassy strongly recommend that UK Nationals sign up for email alerts to www.gov.uk/livinginspain and https://www.gov.uk/foreign-traveladvice/spain, and follow the Facebook page at www.facebook.com/britsinspain. What happens if I was not registered as resident by 31 December? If you were unable to complete the registration process before 1 January, you will still be protected by the Withdrawal Agreement, as long as you were legally living in Spain before the end of 2020. That means that you were living here and meeting the EU free movement conditions of working, being selfemployed, or having sufficient income

and comprehensive healthcare cover to support you during your retirement or studies. For information on the citizens’ rights elements of the Agreement visit: https://www.gov.uk/.../withdrawalagreement-explainer-for.... Your rights come from your living legally in Spain before 31 December, not from possessing the residency card itself. We recommend you have as much documentation in place to demonstrate that you were legally living here before the end of the Transition Period as possible. That might include, but not be limited to, a padrón certificate, utility bill, healthcare policy, work contract or flight ticket. If you are having difficulties with your residency application, there are three organisations, who have received funding to support UK Nationals with this, so please do contact them for help.

Events include conferences, music, theatre, dance, contests, circus, magic, monologues, clowns and more. The Councillor for Culture, Antonio Quesada, and the manager of the Municipal Institute of Culture "Joaquín Chapaprieta", Miguel Fernández, presented the Cultural Program for the first half of 2021 which includes toplevel activities and events for all audiences, with prices that range between 5 and 10 euro per ticket.

Having been previously honoured by the Queen during my military service it is unbelievable to be awarded for a third time. I would like to thank my wife Annie, family, friends, the Vice President of FAST Gordon Clive and all FAST members for their support and assistance. This honour really belongs to them”

Barry Hamilton, President and Director of Training for FAST (Medical Emergency Responders), assists his local community of 4,000 British nationals in Camposol, a vast housing estate in Murcia, through the provision and coordination of medical and other charitable services. Barry has shaped FAST, which is a charity that responds to medical emergencies whilst awaiting an ambulance. This provides essential support in an area where ambulances take time to arrive due to Camposol’s distance from the main health centres and hospitals as well as the layout of the area. Barry has ensured that all the volunteers for FAST have been provided with proper training. Barry has also worked to link all of the charities in the area together, and to create stronger connections with the local Spanish community, allowing people to get the support they need. His work has enabled many British nationals to get better support than they were able to access previously.

Barry’s work in bringing different parties together, promoting collaboration and helping shape the community around shared objectives of helping each other, is remarkable. Third wave ‘unstoppable’ The figures indicate that we are headed towards an unstoppable third wave of the virus, with the highest figures since April reported as people rang in the New Year. 558 people were admitted to hospital in the Alicante province in the first two days of January, with 117 of those in the ICU. A so called ‘avalanche’ of cases in Alcoy has brought the hospital to brink of collapse. Between January 1st and 2nd, 13 people died in the Valencian Community as a result of the coronavirus with infections in the region reaching 1098 (539 of these are new infections in the Alicante province). These latest deaths bring the total number of deaths due to the pandemic in the Valencian Community to 2988.

The data released on January 2nd shows a worrying return to the high figures of the early days of the pandemic. The number of patients hopsitalised due to covid in the Valencian Community has not been this high since April 6th. Since the pandemic began, only ten days show hospitalisations higher than the figures released this week. The number of patients admitted to hospital, and those admitted to ICU, is a key indicator of the prevalence of the virus and a data point keenly watched by health authorities. The latest data shows that in the last week, that figure has risen by 31%. ICU admissions have also grown, by 27% in the last week.

Police warn of vaccine appointment scam Local Police in Pilar de la Horadada have taken to social media to warn people of a Covid 19 vaccine hoax. Several residents of Pilar received phone calls claiming that health personnel would shortly be calling to their home to administer the Covid 19 vaccination. Police have confirmed that this is a hoax and that health services are not calling patients to arrange home appointments

for the vaccine. The Local Police emphasized that "if someone receives this type of message, they must exercise extreme caution as it is a fraud." The police have asked that if anyone does receive a call like this, save the telephone number or if you can, record the conversation in order to help identify those behind the scam.

UK travel ban extended FCDO travel warning as UK flight ban extended for Spain & Canary Islands. Winter sun holidays to Spain are still off the cards for those in the UK. The country is currently absent from the travel corridor list, with the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office warning Britons against all but essential travel to Spain and the Balearic islands. British government advice aside, Spain won't let the vast majority of

Britons in to the country until midJanuary. Spain applied a ban on flights from the UK as well as sea arrivals after a mutant strain of highly infectious coronavirus was identified in Britain. The travel ban was supposed to end today, January 5th but an announcement made at the weekend indicated that the ban has now been extended until January 19.

Bristol flight makes an emergency landing at El Altet There was a scare for several passengers at Alicante-Elche airport over Christmas when a plane from Bristol was forced to make an emergency landing. The pilot detected that there was a problem with the plane’s brakes and proceeded to activate the emergency protocol. Several firefighting vehicles were dispatched to the runway as soon as the

Ryanair plane, landed, with a slower than usual landing. Apparently, the brakes had overheated and there was a risk of fire, according to sources at the airport. The firefighters placed a number of high powered fans on the brakes to reduce the heat and passengers had to wait to disembark.

Locksmith charges woman €1077 to open her door on New Year’s Eve

A locksmith in Cartagena has been criticised for charging a 59 year old woman €1077 to open her door on New Year’s Eve. The woman left her bag at home with the keys inside and on returning to her apartment, realised she needed the services of a locksmith. Her husband has a heart condition and requires oxygen regularly so she urgently needed to access her home. She called the local locksmith, but he was unavailable and, despite knowing the risks of engaging a company without first looking at the reviews she had no option but to make the booking because of her husband’s condition. "For him, a cold means hospitalization," she explained, saying that "a hotel was not an option, because my husband needs oxygen." When the locksmith arrived, the woman claims that three times she asked how much it would cost to open the door but the man avoided answering the question until the door was open and the bill, for €1077.29, presented to her.

New traffic fines from this week A new series of modifications to Spain’s traffic law sees new or changed fines and sanctions being introduced from this week. The new laws came into effect on January 2nd with the aim of improving driver habits. There are five main areas where the DGT has either increased the amount a driver will be fined for an infraction, or has introduced a new fine where previously there were none. 1. Use of mobile phone Until now, the use of the mobile phone while driving was punishable by a 200 euro fine and the loss of three points from the driver's license. Now this penalty is raised to 500 euros and six points, in addition to increasing the possible situations in which phone use is subject to a fine. For example, a driver is no longer allowed to hold a phone in his or her hand regardless of whether the phone is being used or not. This is because, previously, it was difficult for the police to determine if the driver had actually used the phone

while driving or not. 2. Seatbelt and other safety systems Previously, driving without a seat belt, child restraint systems or a helmet in the case of motorcycles, was punished with a loss of three licence points. From now on this increases to four points and includes incorrect use of seatbelt, child seat or helmet. 3. Speed limit Some speed limits have been modified so that, on roads with a single lane and pavement, vehicles should not exceed 20 km / h. Roads with a single lane per traffic direction will have a limit of 30 km / h and on roads with two or more lanes per traffic direction,

the limit will remain 50 km / h. Pay attention to road signage to determine if the speed limit in your area has been reduced. This legislative reform also removes the possibility that cars and motorcycles can exceed the speed limits on conventional roads by 20 km / h when they pass other vehicles. 4. Radar detectors It is now classified as a serious offense to carry radar detection equipment in a vehicle, which will mean a penalty of 200 euros and the loss of three points. Until now, the use of said devices was only sanctioned while actually driving. 5. Theoretical driving test This is a new offence, classified as ‘very serious’, which consists of committing fraud while sitting the driver theory test using unauthorized devices. The penalty will be 500 euros and a ban of 6 months before being allowed to retake the exam.

Authorities to keep record of those who refuse the vaccine Health authorities will keep a record of those who reject the COVID vaccine, it has emerged. The Minister of Health, Salvador Illa, revealed that within Spain’s vaccination programme, citizens will be issued with appointments for vaccination and whoever rejects the vaccine will have their name logged in a central registry that will be shared with other European countries: “It will be recorded, but it is not a document to make public, he explained. The elderly and health workers from all over Spain were among the first to be administered the Covid vaccination. "What we ask of you is that, when you are summoned, go," Illa pleaded in an interview with La Sexta, in which he insisted that the vaccine will be administered meticulously following the objectives set out in the vaccination plan. The Minister recognized that there has been an upward trend in infections in recent weeks and admitted that this "gradual increase" in cases "worries [us] a lot." Regarding the new, more infectious variant of the

coronavirus from the UK, which has already been detected in Spain, Illa acknowledged that there is "concern", but stressed that it is a strain that was already sequenced in September and, for now, the cases detected in Madrid and Andalusia are people with mild symptoms. Regarding the commencement of the vaccination programme, Illa said it was a "special moment", in which he highlighted "the work

done" and the "combined effort between science and industry." The minister insisted that, around the summer, Spain and Europe will be "in a very relevant immunization phase, which will allow many things to be done that cannot be done now." "The forecast is that on May 9 we will be in a position to put an end to the state of alarm," he added, while indicating that a third wave will not lead to a new confinement.

Continued from page 1 You can find their details here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/living-inspain#visas-and-residency What should I do if I can’t get an appointment? COVID restrictions have meant that there are fewer appointments available in some areas, but you should keep trying. You should also remember that you can complete the first stage of the residency process by submitting your documents electronically if you have a digital certificate. You can find out how to get your digital certificate here: https://www.sede.fnmt.gob.es/en/certific ados/persona-fisica. If you do not have a digital certificate you can also use a thirdparty representative to submit your documents for you. Meanwhile, you should make sure you have as much documentation in place to demonstrate that you were legally living here before the end of the Transition Period as possible. That might include, but not be limited to, a padrón certificate, utility bill, healthcare policy, work contract or flight ticket. Is my green certificate still valid or does it need to be exchanged for a TIE? The green residency certificate – both A4 and credit card-sized – remain valid documents to demonstrate your status as a resident and your rights under the Withdrawal Agreement. The Spanish Government emphasises that the biometric TIE is more durable and may simplify some administrative processes and border crossing. If you decide to exchange your green certificate for the TIE, there is no deadline for doing so. See https://www.lamoncloa.gob.es/lang/en/ brexit/howtoprepare/Paginas/190108resi

dence.aspx Will I still be able to access healthcare in Spain? People who have settled in the UK or EU before 31 December 2020, will continue to have life-long reciprocal healthcare rights provided they remain covered under the terms of the Withdrawal Agreement. That means if you live in Spain or moved there before the end of 2020, your rights to access healthcare in Spain will stay the same for as long as you remain resident. Visit gov.uk/healthcareinspain for more information. Is my EHIC valid after 31 December? A new EHIC has been developed for those eligible under the Withdrawal Agreement to protect the existing healthcare rights of people living, working and studying in the EU prior to the end of the transition period. Residents who have a registered S1 form and students will need to get the new UK-issued EHIC which will be valid from when they receive it and for travel from 1 January 2021. They can apply on the NHS website: https://www.nhs.uk/using-thenhs/healthcare-abroad/apply-for-a-free-e hic-european-health-insurance-card/ The Withdrawal Agreement also protects UK and EU nationals who find themselves in a ‘cross-border situation’ over 31 December 2020 (for example, someone whose holiday begins before but ended after the 31 December 2020). These people will be able to continue to access ‘needs-arising treatment’until they leave that country by travelling to another EU MS or returning to the UK. If treatment is needed people will need to contact NHS BSA (https://www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/contact-us) for a Provisional Replacement Certificate (PRC) which shows that they are entitled

to treatment in the EU. They may need to provide evidence that they travelled to the Member State before 31 December 2020 and did not leave the country before they required treatment. The Government always advises that anyone travelling overseas, whether to the EU or elsewhere in the world, should take out comprehensive travel insurance. This remains our advice. UK residents visiting Spain should visit https://www.gov.uk/guidance/healthcare -for-uk-nationals-visiting-spain for the latest information. Can I still exchange my driving licence from 1 January? All valid UK driving licences will be recognised for driving in Spain until 30 June 2021. We have consistently advised UK nationals to exchange their UK licence for a Spanish one. As long as you registered the details of your licence with the Spanish traffic office and the licence was verified by 30 December 2020, you have until 30 June 2021 to complete the exchange. If you were not able to start the process before 30 December you should sign up to email alerts on gov.uk/livinginspain to be informed of the latest developments on the future exchange of driving licences. In the meantime, you can use your valid UK licence until 30 June 2021. If you have exchanged your UK licence for a Spanish one you will not need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive in the UK. If you move to live in the UK, you can exchange your UK licence without having to take a test. Can I continue to claim my pension in Spain? If you are legally living in the EU, EEA or Switzerland by 31 December 2020 you will get your UK State Pension uprated every year for as long as you continue to live there. This will happen even if you

start claiming your pension on or after 1 January 2021, as long as you meet the qualifying conditions explained in the new State Pension guidance. For more information visit: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/living-inspain#pensions I have a second home in Spain. Can I still come and stay there in the same way? UK business visitors and tourists will still be able to travel to the Schengen area for stays of up to 90 days in every 180-day period. From 1 January you will require permission from Spain for any stay longer than that and this may require applying for a visa or permit. You should contact the Consulate General in the UK for further information. This will limit the time you can spend in your property, but your property rights will not change. Can I still travel back to the UK with my dog? There will be no change to the current health preparations or documents for pets entering Great Britain from the EU from 1 January 2021. From 1 January 2021 onwards, the UK will have Part 2 listed status under the EU Pet Travel Scheme, meaning that people travelling from England, Wales or Scotland with their pets and assistance dogs will need to follow new requirements in order to travel to Spain. For further information visithttps://www.gov.uk/guidance/pettravel-to-europe-from-1-january-2021, where you will also find contact details for the pet travel hotline. Will there be changes at the border when I come into Spain? Do I need to do anything differently? If you live in Spain, you should always travel with both your valid passport and proof of your residence status (TIE or green EU residence certificate). From 1

www.costablancapeople.com

January, UK Nationals will not be able to use the passport lanes for EU/EEA/EFTA/Swiss citizens and should use the lanes for Third Country Nationals (TCNs). The COVID situation is evolving and travel restrictions can change quickly, so you should sign up for alerts to https://www.gov.uk/foreign-traveladvice/spain, so that you are kept up to date with the latest information. Can students continue their studies in Spain? UK nationals who are resident in Spain by the end of the transition period will continue to be treated on an equal basis to Spanish students in terms of eligibility for student support if they wish to go to a Spanish university, even if that is after the end of the transition period. UK nationals who move to Spain to study a full degree from 1 January 2021 must apply for the relevant visa before travelling and may have to pay the fees applicable to non-EU citizens. Are there any changes to mobile phone roaming? If you have a UK mobile phone, you should be aware that there may be new roaming charges from 1 January 2021. You should check with your provider for details. Where can I find more information? Carols in the Theatre

For the very first time the annual Carols in the Square event took place in the Municipal Theatre, Torrevieja on Monday evening the 14th December. Because of covid restrictions the audience was limited by ticket only to 306 people. It really was an evening to remember, compered by Keith Nicol. The carol singing was lead by Rebecca Holt and Shannon Campbell, accompanied by the Royal British Legion Concert Band under the musical direction of David Last with such festive favourites as Hark the Herald Angels Sing, Good King Wenceslas, White Christmas and Jingle Bells, the audience joined in with great enthusiasm. The Asila Choir sang three Spanish favourites, Feliz Navidad, Fum Fum Fum and Las Campanas de Belen to great applause. The well known Sette Voci Septet sang five numbers, including the traditional Silent Night, once more to enthusiastic applause. The evening was a great success and all involved in organising and putting together this event, under very difficult circumstances are to be congratulated.

More smoking restrictions The Minister of Health, Salvador Illa, this week met with the Tobacco Board, the highest representative body of the tobacco sector, in order to make it clear that he is committed to the health of the Spanish population and that, "as soon as possible", he is going to bring in tighter restrictions with more smoke-free spaces and the stricter regulation of the electronic cigarette. Illa has been immersed in managing Spain’s reaction to the coronavirus pandemic for months, but does not forget what he considers the most significant preventable cause of death in Spain, smoking and diseases caused by smoking, causing around 60,000 people to die each year in Spain. He is very concerned because "there is an increase in the prevalence of smoking in segments of the young population." "I have already met at least twice with the entities and associations that are in the fight

against smoking, and I have also met with the sector (the Tobacco

Board) and I have told them that our obligation is to protect public health of all citizens," Illa remarked to news agency Efe, alluding to a meeting with the tobacco sector that he later reported to the National Committee for the Prevention of Smoking (CNPT). It is not very common for a Minister of Health to meet with the Tobacco Board, where large

multinationals such as Philip Morris, Altadis and BAT are represented, as well as farmers, distributors and processors. The official interlocutor between the Tobacco Board and the government is the Commission for the Tobacco Market, an autonomous body overseen by the Ministry of Finance. Despite this, Illa agreed to meet with the tobacco sector and remind them: "Our obligation is to protect the health of all citizens...And, therefore, we are going to strengthen and review" tobacco regulation "as soon as possible." Illa revealed that his intention is to "increase smoke-free spaces to areas not currently covered", as well as "regulate new forms of smoking and to smoke (electronic cigarettes)” and to ensure these new devices are covered by the law. According to Illa, electronic cigarettes produce “deceptive situations” because the public perceives them to be less risky than traditional methods of smoking.

National Arms Registry created

Two arrested for Torrevieja shooting Two people, a man and a woman, were arrested on Christmas Eve for the fatal shooting of a young woman from Murcia. Judicial police and Guardia Civil made the arrest after the 26 year old from Almería was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head at an address in Torrevieja. The arrested parties are believed to be a man and a woman – the man believed to be the perpetrator and the woman an accessory, also accused of helping to cover up the crime. The young woman who was shot was talking on the phone with her girlfriend when, suddenly, communication was abruptly interrupted. Fearing that something had happened to her partner, it was victim's girlfriend raised the alarm and notified police. Officers from the Armed Institute were dispatched to the victim’s, broke down the door and found the girl's remains, in a pool of blood. The victim was found with a single shot to the head on Tuesday night in a house in the Los Leandros urbanization, in

www.costablancapeople.com

Torrevieja. Investigators from the Guardia Civil are following the hypothesis that the murder is linked to a settling of scores related to drug trafficking. The victim was allegedly linked to a criminal group which stole drug hauls from other organized crime gangs. A few hours after the girl's body was discovered, investigators recovered a firearm from a bin near the scene of the crime, the subsequent analysis of which confirmed that it was the weapon used to shoot the victim. The girl’s body was sent to the Institute of Legal Medicine for an autopsy to be performed and with the murder weapon found just hours after the body was discovered, investigators already had two people under suspicion. The two suspects were arrested on Christmas Eve at a house in the Region of Murcia, and, after two nights in the cells, appeared in court last Saturday. Sources close to the investigation said the man was sent to preventive detention.

New regulations for the ownership of arms have come into force this year. Among the new legislation introduced is the creation of a National Arms Registry. This new body will be overseen by the Guardia Civil. The registry will include a record of weapons, ammunition, components, guides, authorizations and licenses as well as records of ownership. In accordance with European Parliament directives, Spain’s Arms Registry will declare expired any data 30 years after the destruction of a weapon or arms component. Access to the records is only allowed by the authorities. Until now, identification records of firearms and of the persons who acquired or owned them, appeared in a file called “ARMS”, which was regulated by the Interior Ministry. With the new modification to legislation, the old records are now renamed the National Registry of Weapons, and will contain all historical information so that the details of every weapon from its origin to current ownership status are accessible at all times.

Like it or not, selling a home is not the same today as it used to be. Lots of changes have taken place during the past year that we’ve all had to get used to and will be considered “standard” in 2021. More online viewings and less face to face interaction is now the “new normal”. Preparing your home for sale in 2021 will involve being more creative, especially when those photos and videos are being taken. No more “it’ll do” attitude! You need to focus on what buyers are seeing online. Do your photos really showcase your homes features? Property descriptions. Many agents don’t even bother writing a compelling description on a home. But in 2021 buyers will be reading everything they can get their hands on. Remember, they’re doing research themselves online without the privilege of being in Spain and walking into an Estate Agents

office. The more information you can give a buyer, the better. There will be even more online property purchases in 2021 instead of buyers waiting to jump on a plane, together with completions being finalized by Power of Attorney instead of being here in person. Changes are always difficult to get used to. They are in place to keep everything moving forward and everyone safe to enjoy life in Spain! Is your home ready to be sold in 2021? Own a home in Spain? What will Brexit mean for you? There’s been plenty of talk about how Brexit will impact Britons’ ability to go on holiday within the EU from 1 January 2021 onwards but what about those who own property there? Brexit tasks are, of course, ongoing, but in response to a wide range of queries from anxious British owners of property in Spain, the experts at CostaLuz Lawyers have shared their insights into what Brexit will and won’t affect, based on what we know so far. Keith Rule of CostaLuz Lawyers told the Costa Blanca People “We’ve been responding to plenty of queries about residency over the course of this year but also about property ownership in Spain and how that is affected. As the Brexit deadline looms, many property owners’ concerns are increasing, so we wanted to share some detail about what the future holds in order to allay property owners’ concerns – and those of anyone looking to buy property in Spain in 2021 as well.” Will the property purchase process change as a result of Brexit? No. Britons who buy property in Spain will still have to follow the same purchase process. I own property in Spain – will Brexit affect my rights as a homeowner? No, it won’t. Property rights are never linked to residency status. All owners of property in Spain have the same rights and obligations, regardless of where they are from. Are there any tax implications? There aren’t any tax implications in relation to property ownership. However, the rate of non-resident income tax that British nationals have to pay will increase from 19% to 24% from 1 January 2021. This is because Spain, along with other EU countries, distinguishes between EEA and non-EEA nationals. How long can I stay in my Spanish property after Brexit? From 1 January 2021, rules regarding the length of your stay in Spain will change. You will no longer be allowed to stay for more than 90 days at a time in a 180-day period. Note that the 90 days starts as soon as you enter the Schengen Area. This means that if you travel to Spain via France, for example, the time you spend in France counts towards your tally of 90 days. What if I want to stay for longer – can I join two periods of 90 days? No. At present you can only spend up to 90 days in Spain, then you must leave the country. You will then not be able to return to the Schengen Area until 180 days have passed since your date of entry into Spain (or elsewhere in the Schengen

Area). You can, however, divide the 90-day period into smaller chunks, for example by spending two periods of 45 days each in Spain. Does the 90-day rule apply even if I own property in Spain? Yes, it does. Spain may, of course, introduce new legislation to favour British property owners and allow them to spend longer periods of time in the country. However, at present the government has not announced any new rules. Will Brexit affect my rights as a homeowner in Spain? No. The UK’s decision to leave the EU does not affect homeownership rights in Spain. These will continue to be the same as they were prior to Brexit. Will my NIE change when the UK leaves the EU? No. Your NIE (foreigner’s identification number) is valid throughout your lifetime and does not change.

What if I am officially resident? If you have a Spanish residence permit (known as the Tarjeta de Identidad Extranjero/TIE), your status falls under the Withdrawal Agreement set up between the UK and EU. This means your rights in Spain and the rest of the EU do not change after Brexit. What if I live in Spain but am not officially resident? If you don’t have residency, you won’t enjoy the same benefits as other EU citizens in Spain. Note that, on 4 July 2020, the Spanish authorities introduced a new residency card for British nationals in Spain. Known as the TIE (tarjeta de identidad de extranjero), the card expressly states that the holder is a beneficiary of the Withdrawal Agreement between the UK and the EU. It also confirms the holder’s right to live in Spain. Keith said “There is bound to be a period of adjustment following 1 January 2021 for Britons who own property in Spain, particularly for those impacted by the 90-day rule. It’s important for property owners to stay abreast of any further developments over the course of 2021 (and beyond) to ensure that they are fully aware of their rights and obligations.” For more information, please contact CostaLuz Lawyers’ UK office on +44 1908 635 111 and speak with Keith. Underground motorway will link coast with inland Vega Baja The reality of a motorway connection between the interior of the region and the coast is a little closer. Radio Orihuela revealed in an article this week that the Ministry of Development together with the Ministry of Infrastructure, will soon present a project for the connection both by road and by rail between the urban area of Orihuela and the coast. The most striking thing about the studies carried out is that it appears plans are being examined to build the stretch of motorway underground. The environmental problems involved in crossing the entire Vega Baja at surface level and the proximity of protected areas such as Sierra Escalona led the administration to make a decision to go underground, which despite being higher in terms of cost, is more environmentally friendly. Regarding the total cost of the project, a final figure is not yet confirmed but speculation is that the savings to be made by not having to carry out

expropriations will compensate for the increased cost in tunnelling the 23 kilometres outlined by the study. In addition to the road connection, the project includes the railway connection. The exact entry and exit points of the new CV-95 will be announced during the final presentation of the project, but according to insiders one of its entrances will be very close to the town of Orihuela since, in addition to the road, the project includes a railway connection. The Miguel Hernández train station in Orihuela is thought to be one of the main points that will be linked to the new tunnel.

Along the route, entrances and exits to the underground road will be established (Jacarilla and San Miguel de Salinas will have new train stations) so that the new connection will also serve to structure the region. Another issue to be determined is how the road infrastructure will be divided into four ‘arms’ once it reaches the coast so that it can serve the four coastal municipalities. The Valencian Government will initiate a round of talks in Brussels in the coming weeks in order to seek new lines of financing in the European Union.

First olive oil produced from the "Palmeral de Orihuela"

The Councillor for the Environment for Orihuela, Dámaso Aparicio, has presented the first oil produced from the Orihuela Palm Grove, a Site of Cultural Interest. The Councillor explained that "the extra virgin olive oil has been collected from more than one hundred existing olive trees and that currently the grove has 229 after the planting that took place at the beginning of the legislature." With the production of this oil "we value this Site and make known the fruits of our palm grove that can now be tasted," he added. The Councillor emphasised that it is a unique variety of olive oil and thanked the municipal biologist, Gonzalo Escudero, as well as the members of the Gardening Employment Workshop, and the Los Ministros Oil Mill, for the work carried out to harvest, create and produce this product.

The Department of the Environment began the recovery of the agricultural orchards in their natural environment after the planting of 12,000 m2 of alfalfa and wheat, fulfilling one of the objectives of the Master Plan and Management of the Palm Grove. At the same time, the council has launched a study of 600 palm trees to determine the best specimens which produce dates, with 34 finally being selected. The Councilor for the Environment explained that the oil produced is currently only intended to be used for the promotion of the Palm Grove, and will not go on general sale. The Department of the Environment plans to deliver a significant amount of oil to associations in the San Antón neighbourhood and to Cáritas Interparroquial.

La Finca Fillies La Finca Fillies is a group for women, which began in January 2019, for women that lived or had holiday homes on La Finca Golf. This grew to include the surrounding areas of Lo Crispin, Algorfa and close areas. Organisers told the Costa Blanca People, “Initially it was a girly get together, but realised we could put it to better use, and raise money for charities in the process. To do this for €1 per go we play bingo, do a quiz specific to the special day that we have the meeting and a raffle. We have a lot of fun, prizes are donated from the members which there over 100 now. This helps keep the money in the pot and not needed for purchases. We meet once a month for lunch and sometimes an evening event. We also have days out to other towns. We have several very talented girls that

make an array of crafts which we sell at local events i.e. xmas fayre, McMillan day and any Fiestas held on the La Finca commercial area.” In 2019 La Finca Fillies contributed considerable amounts to the families of the surrounding areas that were victims of the floods and it was decided by vote to donate the remainder to Cancer research here in Spain. 2020 has been a little different in terms of Covid 19 restrictions, however, this did not stop La Finca Fillies raising money. The spokesperson told us, “Even though we couldn't meet, we played on line Bingo, which also helped boost morale. We also raised money for the McMillan day in September and Elf day for Alzheimer's in December. It will be decided at by all the attendees at January's anniversary meeting where the

remainder of our charity pot will go this year.” “Every October we have an Annual Auction night meeting, there are no games played, instead everyone brings along any unwanted gift or item to Auction off. In 2019 the money went to the families affected by the floods where the money helped to purchase fridges, washing machines and doors. This year we explored the Orphanage in Orihuela, and after discussions with the director there and the fundraiser coordinator. We raised over €1200 which was spent on an individual gift for each if the 54 children there and the €780 left after this was given in Vouchers to spend at Primark, for clothes, shoes, warm coats etc. These were presented to the director of the Orphanage at our December Christmas jumper day meeting.”

British fugitive arrested in Rojales for exploitation and child pornography Officers of the National Police arrested a 61 year old man of British nationality at his home in Rojales. The man had a European Detention Order against him for being on the run from the UK for alleged crimes of sexual exploitation of children and child pornography. At the beginning of December, the SIRENE unit of the National Police (International Coordination Office of the International Cooperation Division) received an alert about a potential fugitive in the area. The report, filed by British authorities, detailed the search for a person who was on the run from UK authorities for alleged crimes of sexual exploitation of children and child pornography in a series of events that occurred between 1999 and 2002 when the underage victims were 9 and 11 years old, and who were allegedly abused while in the care of the suspect. A specialist unit dedicated to the location of International Fugitives began investigations to find out the whereabouts of the suspect and soon tracked him to the Costa Blanca town of Rojales. This specialist unit reached out to the Alicante Provincial Police

to coordinate the search effort with agents of the Organized Crime unit of Judicial Police. The various units worked together to collect all possible data that would eventually lead to the identification and location of the suspect. The man sought by police had several previous convictions for similar acts of sexual violence, being convicted in 1990 of three crimes of sexual assault against a minor under 14 years of age and in 1995 convicted of two crimes of sexual assault against a male under the age of 16. All of the sentences were handed down by

the Swansea Crown Court in Wales. The officers in charge of the case carried out a multitude of inquiries until they were able to locate the man at his own home in Rojales. After the discovery, a surveillance unit was established to confirm the man’s identity. Once he was located, British authorities confirmed the man’s identity and the investigation moved to the next phase – arrest. The fugitive was arrested in the vicinity of his home with heavy security measures in place to process his delivery to the British authorities.

Many people opt to try a plant based diet in January, feeling that the ‘clean’ eating of a vegan lifestyle helps to balance out the excesses of the festive season. Even if you aren’t prepared to go full-on vegan, keeping meat out of your diet for one or two days out of the week is certain to offer health benefits. If you are removing meat from your diet, it is important to replace the protein with plant based alternatives which luckily, is very easy to do as most vegan recipes are abundant with protein rich beans, pulses and more. If you’d like to give it a try, here are some easy vegan weeknight dinners that are a good place to start.

Creamy Vegan One Pot Pasta This Asian style vegan one pot pasta with coconut milk and red curry paste is absolutely perfect. Easy, healthy, and so incredibly delicious and creamy. Ingredients 1 onion, chopped 2 cloves of garlic, minced 1 courgette, chopped 1 small red pepper, chopped 4 1/2 cups uncooked pasta 1 1/2 teaspoons red curry paste 3 cups diced tomatoes (canned) (do not drain) 1 cup canned coconut milk (whole fat) (use the creamy part) 1/2 cup frozen peas 1/2 cup cherry tomatoes, cut into halves salt, to taste black pepper, to taste 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice

Instructions 1. Heat some oil in a large pot and sauté the onion for about 2-3 minutes. Then add the garlic, the courgette, and the red pepper and cook for 2 more minutes. 2. Add the remaining ingredients except for the cherry tomatoes. Cook for about 15 minutes (uncovered and on medium heat, then add the cherry tomatoes and cook for two more minutes. Season with salt and black pepper. Enjoy!

Vegan spaghetti with meatballs Ingredients For the vegan meatballs: 1 15 oz can kidney beans 1/2 tablespoon olive oil 1 large clove of garlic, minced 1/2 onion, chopped 1 teaspoon oregano 1 teaspoon basil 1 tablespoon tomato paste 1 teaspoon soy sauce 1/2 cup rolled oats 1/3 heaped cup sunflower seeds salt black pepper For the chunky marinara sauce: 1/2 tablespoon olive oil 1 small onion, chopped 1 large clove garlic, minced 1 carrot, cut into small pieces 1 tablespoon tomato paste 1/4 cup dry red wine 1 can diced tomatoes (14,5 oz) 1 teaspoon oregano fresh basil leaves, cut into small pieces salt black pepper For the spaghetti: 9 oz whole wheat spaghetti For the cashew Parmesan: 1/2 cup unsalted cashews 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder salt Instructions 1. Cook the spaghetti according to the instructions on the package. 2. Rinse and drain the kidney beans. Put them in a medium bowl and mash them well with a fork or a potato masher. 3. In a medium pan, heat some oil and sauté the onions for 3 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.

4. Put the sunflower seeds in a food processor and pulse until a fine meal is achieved. 5. Use your hands to thoroughly mix everything. Then form about 12-14 balls. 6. Preheat the oven to 350 °F bake the vegan meatballs for about 15 minutes. Carefully flip them halfway through the baking time. 7. Add the sauteed onion and garlic to the mashed beans together with the spices, the tomato paste, the soy sauce, the ground sunflower seeds, and the oats. Season with salt and pepper. 8. Alternatively you could also pan-fry them. In a medium pan, heat some olive oil over medium heat and gently roast the bean balls for about 4 minutes until they are golden. You'll achieve the best results with a cast iron pan. However, I would recommend the baking version. Not only is this

version oil-free, they meatballs also become crispier and firmer this way. 9. Make the marinara sauce: In a medium pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Sauté the onions for 3 minutes, then add the garlic and the carrot. Cook for another 2-3 minutes. Stir in the tomato paste and cook for 2 minutes. 10. Then deglaze with red wine and allow to evaporate. Add diced tomatoes and simmer for about 10 minutes. Season with oregano, salt, and pepper. Before serving add some fresh basil leaves. 11. Make the cashew Parmesan: Put the cashews, nutritional yeast, salt, and garlic powder in a food processor and pulse until a fine meal is achieved. 12. Serve the spaghetti with the marinara and vegan meatballs and sprinkle with Parmesan and fresh basil leaves.

What do you know about Case working for the RBL? I am a case worker for the RBL and have been for the last 5 years. Our service is totally volunteer based, with a Coordinator heading up the team who allocates the cases to the case worker. How does the co-ordinator know who needs help? It depends largely on information provided by RBL branches about the people in need, in their community. Calls are also made by the general public to the Co-ordinator and she also receives information via UK based staff where local people in Spain call the UK Call Centre number. Information is also passed via the consulates and other charities, with whom the RBL work. Whilst the RBL support is focussed on Veterans and their families, support in the form of information and guidance can also be offered to members of the

general public. Once the cases are allocated, there is a 48 hour requirement to follow it up with the person in need; however in these difficult times of the Covid -19 pandemic, much of the work is carried out over the phone or via email. If this is difficult because of age or infirmity, a visit will be organised although the case worker has to obey the rules with people not in their ‘bubble’: wearing face masks, using sanitiser, sitting outside where possible and maintaining a social distance. The information gathered is to ensure the person seeking the support obtains the right sort of help, perhaps funding for a wheelchair or a hospital bed, but once the caseworker visits, he or she may notice other things which would help the person to remain independent: It could be a shower chair, with a commode facility, where the person can be wheeled to the toilet or the shower, or a rise and recline style bed. While the caseworker is talking to the individual, he/she may notice that the person’s teeth do not fit well, making speech difficult or perhaps they are hard of hearing: The caseworker will normally ask to see the kitchen and the bathroom, as these are areas which may be refurbished so that

the person can more easily keep themselves clean and manage meal preparation more effectively. New white goods may also be sourced, or a wet room created. Other equipment that enables mobility could include a stairlift, wheelchair, mobility scooter: Support could include repatriation to a care facility in the UK or support to gain qualifications to earn a living, or in the case of people in prison, visits to ensure that they are able to speak English to someone and gain support in terms of clothing or books in English. Assistance may also be offered for funerals and where requested, a standard bearer will attend. For vulnerable people living alone, we work with Cruz Roja to support their pendant alarm system, so that if the person falls or feels unwell, they can talk to someone at Cruz Roja, in English, and if necessary, an ambulance will be sent to their home. Help may also be given to complete the Attendance allowance forms or the Personal Independence Payment made by the UK, or to register with social services, in Spain. There are many other ways in which people have been helped and during this period of Remembrance, it is important to continue to support the RBL with donations, so that this work

may be carried out, As things stand in Spain, now, we will need financial support from the UK, for the first time in December or early in the New Year. The money raised in Spain stays in Spain for supporting UK veterans who have fallen on hard times. This year has been a difficult time in terms of fund raising, as we have been unable to host social events, as we normally would.

We are also seeking more case workers, so that our work may continue. Full training will be given and a period of mentorship will support the new caseworker. If you feel that you have time to help us to continue this work, then please call the Co-ordinator on 0034 676 451 780

Instructions STEP 1 Tip 1.6kg braising steak, cut into large chunks, into a large bowl with 3 bay leaves, a small bunch of thyme, 2 bottles cheap red wine and some pepper, then cover and leave in the fridge overnight. STEP 2 Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. STEP 3 Place a colander over another

large bowl and strain the marinated meat, keeping the wine. STEP 4 Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large frying pan, then brown the meat in batches, transferring to a plate once browned. When all the meat is browned, pour a little wine into the now-empty frying pan and bubble to release any caramelised bits from the pan. STEP 5 Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large casserole and fry 3 large or 6 normal carrots, cut into large chunks, and 2 roughly chopped onions until they start to colour. Stir in 3 tbsp plain flour for 1 min, then add 1 tbsp tomato purée. STEP 6 Add the beef and any juices, the wine from the frying pan and the rest of the wine and herbs. Season and bring to a simmer. Give everything a good stir, then cover. STEP 7 Transfer to the oven and bake for 2 hrs until the meat is really tender. Cool. Will freeze for up to 3 months.

Beef Bourguignon Ingredients 1.6kg braising steak, cut into large chunks 3 bay leaves small bunch thyme 2 bottles cheap red wine 2 tbsp oil 3 large or 6 normal carrots, cut into large chunks 2 onions, roughly chopped 3 tbsp plain flour 1 tbsp tomato purée To serve small knob butter 300g bacon lardons 500g pearl onions or small shallots, peeled 400g mushrooms, halved chopped parsley

Bars & Restaurants

STEP 8 To serve, defrost completely overnight in the fridge if frozen, then place on a low heat to warm through. STEP 9 Meanwhile, heat a small knob of butter in a frying pan and add 300g bacon lardons and 500g peeled pearl onions or small shallots. Sizzle for about 10 mins until the bacon starts to crisp and the onions soften and colour. STEP 10 Add 400g halved mushrooms and fry for another 5 mins, then stir everything into the stew and heat for 10 mins more. Serve scattered with chopped parsley.

Ingredients 12 skinless chicken pieces - a mixture of thighs and drumsticks on the bone, and halved chicken breasts 3 tbsp plain flour 2 tbsp sunflower oil 2 onions, sliced 2 carrots, diced 200g bacon lardons, smoked or unsmoked, or streaky rashers, snipped 3 bay leaves 3 sprigs thyme 250ml red wine 3 tbsp tomato paste 1 chicken stock cube For the herby dumplings 140g cold butter, diced 250g self-raising flour 2 tbsp chopped mixed herb - try parsley, thyme and sage or chives Instructions STEP 1 Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Toss the chicken pieces with the flour and some salt and pepper, to coat them – it’s easy to do this in a plastic food bag. STEP 2 Heat the oil in a casserole with a lid. Brown the chicken pieces well on all sides – you’ll need to do this in batches. Remove all the

pieces to a plate, and tip the onions, carrot, lardons, bay and thyme into the pan. Cook gently for 10 mins until the onion is softened. STEP 3 Return the chicken pieces, with any juices that have collected on the plate. Then pour in the red wine, 250ml water and tomato paste and crumble in the stock cube. Add a splash more of water if you need, until the chicken is almost covered. Bring to the boil, then cover with a lid and bake in the oven for 20 mins. Remove the lid and bake for another 10 mins while you make the dumplings.

STEP 4 Rub the butter into the flour with your fingertips until it feels like fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the herbs with ½ tsp salt and some pepper. Drizzle over 150ml water, and stir in quickly with a cutlery knife to form a light dough. Use floured hands to shape into ping pong sized balls. STEP 5 Place the dumplings on top of the stew and bake for 20 mins more until the dumplings are cooked through.stir everything into the stew and heat for 10 mins more. Serve scattered with chopped parsley.

What Is the CICO Diet and does it work? If you’re fed up by trying diet fad after diet fad, the minimalism of what's known as the CICO diet might seem pretty appealing. Put simply, it stands for stands for “calories in, calories out” and in the past couple of years, CICO has been all over the internet, especially on forums like Reddit and with Facebook groups like Lose Weight Eat Pizza attracting tens of thousands of members. After failing at strict eating plans like Keto, one Redditor commented that she “had an epiphany that CICO isn’t actually a ‘diet’ to lose weight, but relearning to eat in the manner I would be if I was at my ideal size…I had to admit I had no idea how little my body needed.” Another Redditor actually went as far as cancelling his weight-loss surgery after successfully shedding more than 90 kg on CICO. What is the CICO diet? A complete simplification of weight loss, CICO stands for “calories in, calories out” - and it’s a dieting concept that’s been around for decades, explained dietician Torey Armul. Because losing weight ultimately comes down burning through more calories than you’re eating, “there is a lot of truth to it. It’s been gaining steam as a trendy diet,” she says. There’s no official book or app, paid membership or celebrity spokesperson: Followers of the CICO diet simply calculate their calorie needs online, and then track how much they eat, drink, and work out in a given day to ensure they have a deficit (if their goal is to lose weight) or to maintain their current

weight. What are the benefits? Experts agree that the theory behind the CICO diet is, at the most basic level, true: Eating fewer calories than what your body needs to survive results in weight loss. If you have struggled with overly restrictive diets in the past, the CICO mindset - which avoids the concept of “forbidden” foods - might work. “For someone who’s completely confused about conflicting nutrition messages, CICO can be a very simple, easy place to start,” Armul explained. Even if you don’t plan to go full on CICO, tracking your calories for a few days can be very eye-opening. “People are often surprised by how many calories are in their food and how much is burned by exercise,” Armul says. “Knowledge is power. If you’re aware of what’s on a menu, that helps you to make better choices.” What does CICO get wrong? While we could all benefit from a simple and easy to follow nutrition plan, many experts claim CICO oversimplifies it. Being beholden to the number on the weighing scale and using our weight to dictate our health is not always the answer. If you follow CICO without paying attention to where your calories are coming from, you run the risk of missing out on the nutrients, vitamins, and minerals you need to feel good and stay active, focused, and healthy. Not all foods are created equal: Some

actually slightly increase your calorie burn. Known as thermogenic effect, fibre-rich foods like whole grains and veggies actually require calories for our bodies to break down. While we’re only talking tens of calories a day, in the long run that difference could play a role in the number of calories our bodies require to maintain a healthy weight. What are the downsides? Quality of nutrition: The CICO diet doesn’t account for the quality of what you are eating, as long as you don’t go beyond your day’s total calorie count and that’s not great news for your

overall health. It’s hard to stick to: Counting calories involves almost religious tracking, and that gets old fast. It can leave you deficient: If you’re focused only on calories, you could be in danger of missing out on essential vitamins and minerals. You may feel tired and more hungry: It depends on what you eat on CICO but again, many people tend to reach for simple carbs like bagels, crisps, and biscuits. Those foods quickly spike and drop blood sugar, causing you to feel hungry and tired. You’ll get an energy boost in the short term, but you’ll crash

because it’s not staying in your stomach for long. Can you make it work? Of course. As long as you don’t take a simple view of CICO. Technically, you could live on pizza for a month and lose weight as long as you were coming in below your recommended daily calorie intake. And you don’t have to be a nutritionist to know that in terms of your long term health, that’s not good. If you are counting calories in, be mindful of your nutrition too. Consider taking a good supplement and always ensure you are getting enough fibre.

Phoenix car club Christmas Carols

The boys and girls of the Phoenix Car Club were on the road again in November and December with two drives within the Valencia region in keeping with the current restrictions. In November, drivers ventured to Hurchillo, Molins, Jacarilla and

Chocolate for grownups What a time to be alive. Finally, a chocolate bar that you won’t have to share with the kids. Say goodbye to hiding chocolate until they’ve gone to bed, or retreating to the bathroom to enjoy a bit of chocolate in peace (like you’ve never done that?!). American company Eat Gold Organics has created the type of chocolate that only adults can have: bars infused with wellnessboosting ingredients. Self-proclaiming to be "organic, functional...& f*cking delicious," this premium chocolate brand is infused with adaptogens and nootropics. Or, in simpler terms, chocolate that's loaded with the good stuff to help adults do certain things better like create, explore, sleep, push out the good vibes and even orgasm.

The brand offers eight bar options to choose from, each of which serves its own purpose. Currently, the line-up includes Be Happy (the one for good vibes), Create Magic (the one for genius time), Sweet Dreams (the one for better sleep), Big Orgasm (the one for "doing it"), Immune Shroom (the one for an extra boost), Menopausal Goddess (the one for hot flushes), Pre Pump (the one for working out), and New Mama (the one for mood & milk). The idea of the founder is that rather than trying to cram goodness into a daily smoothie, why not cram it into an enjoyable chocolate treat. Chocolate is already loaded with antioxidants. These helpful compounds keep your cells “clean” of damaging free radicals, fight aging, reduce inflammation, and give your

immune system a boost. Who wouldn’t want a bite of all that? Part of wellness is the ability to adapt, no matter what life throws at us. That’s where the adding of adaptogens comes in. Adaptogens are nature’s toolkit for helping the body roll with the punches of daily living. These herbs and roots prime us to resist stress by promoting healing on a systemic scale - protecting the body from degeneration, tweaking hormone production, and supporting the immune system. Finally come the nootropics, also known as “smart supplements.” Where adaptogens work on the body, nootropics work on the brain. Sourced from natural ingredients, these supplements can boost cognitive function, creativity, memory, focus, and motivation.

There IS such a thing as too much exercise Believe it or not, too much exercise could actually make you put on weight, and although that's not the worst news we could hear today, it’s not great. It's all down to 'burning out', apparently: too much exercise, and you'll stop being able to train properly, which in turn will affect your body's ability to burn fat. One Personal trainer and injuryprevention specialist said: “Exercising at a high intensity for an extended period of time, especially in addition to the stress of work, life, relationships, and body image, can throw you into adrenal fatigue. 'Your body essentially has exhausted its capacity to fight, but you continue to put it in 'fight or flight' mode by exercising - especially high-intensity, long-duration exercise. This throws your hormones out of balance, causing fatigue, poor performance, fogginess, and weight gain - especially around your middle.” If this revelation has left you wondering if you're affected, some signs of adrenal fatigue include constant tiredness, trouble focusing, and slow recovery time – however, it's always best to seek a doctor's advice if you're struggling with these symptoms or are worried about exercise. Bear in mind that 'more is not necessarily better' when it comes to your workout – and instead, sometimes it’s advisable for those who are training to lose weight to 'choose a routine that supports your goals...Stick to longduration/low-intensity, or shortduration/high-intensity'. And the ultimate gym sin? ...Exercising twice a day. Remember that rest days are important to give your body a chance to

recover; without them, you could throw your hormones out of whack. That's not to say exercise shouldn't still be incorporated into your routine – even if it's just a gentle walk. As with everything, balance is key. So if the scales aren´t rolling backwards, how can you stay motivated to carry on with those workouts? It is possible to become friends with fitness without ending up hating it down the road. Here are a few tips to stay happy, healthy, and motivated for the long-term. 1. Switch up your workouts Hitting up a high-intensity class every day before work? The weight-loss results might be there, but they're not sustainable if you're constantly pushing your body beyond its limits without giving yourself a break. Go back to doing things that are more restorative in nature - like walking, meditation, and yoga - and not just doing the push-push-push. Workouts like HIIT are addictive - they get our adrenaline so high. But they can do damage to your joints and muscles, as well as your adrenal glands. Instead, try cross-training, meaning training in many different activities to achieve full-body results and keep you out of a rut. You can work out seven days a week. What you shouldn't do is highintensity workouts or weight-training seven days a week. Three of those seven days should be more gentle workouts, like Tai Chi, Pilates, or yoga. Then three days a week doing something highintensity. Then the seventh day, have a fun workout day.

2. Find a change of scenery Instead of spending every day of the week at the gym or in a class, take at least one day to spice things up. Your mind will thank you for the change in routine. Go to the beach, play volleyball, go on a hike; do something outside. Sometimes people who are workout people - think that if they don't go to the gym or a workout class, they're not getting a workout in. A hike counts! 3. Catch some zzzs Sometimes it’s OK to cancel your fitness session and get some sleep - that's the number one thing. Number two is nutrition. And number three is doing more therapeutic movements. That's going to get you both the calming effects, and also the workout effects. In hard workouts, you're putting your nervous system into more shock. It's more important to make sure you get in the calming workouts and the highintensity workouts. 4. Take time for yourself Sometimes you just have to get away from it all - no sweat included. Take a walk by the beach, along the coast, with your dog and just relax. If after all that, you’re still not falling back in love with your workouts, then switch to something more sedate so that you are still exercising and reaping those health benefits, but don´t find it such a chore. Walking can be a wonderful way to help whittle away your waistline... Practise interval-walking It's not just walking faster that burns more calories – changing pace will hike (excuse the pun) calorie-burn too, one

study found. Researchers from Ohio State University found that changing pace can increase metabolic rate up to 20% more than maintaining one fixed pace. The study also found we tend to walk faster when we cover longer distances, contrary to what you might think. Once a week, plan a longer interval-based walk of 40-plus minutes to really notice a difference. Incidental exercise Incidental exercise, the stuff you can squeeze into your daily routine, is the exercise that will really make a difference simply because you're more likely to stick to it. Walking burns around four calories a minute, give or take a calorie or two depending on your build, so if you manage to walk at least 15-20 minutes as part of your existing Monday-to-Friday routine, you could lose a pound over eight weeks. And the data to support this is hefty – a study published in the BMJ found those who actively commuted had both lower BMI and body fat than their non-active commuting counterparts. And the benefits don't end there. Researchers from UEA and the University of York found 'active travel' offered a boost to mental wellbeing too, in particular for stress management, decision making and mood-boosting. Change the gradient Expect to burn around 30 percent more calories by adding even a small gradient to your walk. It's a no brainer that you'll expend more energy walking uphill but a third is a worthwhile hike. You'll work hamstrings (backs of thighs) and glutes (bum muscles) more by

walking uphill too. Take the stairs Including as many flights of stairs into your daily routine is a must if whittling waistline is one of your goals. Just over 10 minutes a day of climbing the stairs will burn off that mid-afternoon chocolate bar! And when it comes to your heart health, pace doesn't matter – new research has found that sprinting up the stairs will do the same as opting for a slower pace. So you can mix and match your pace, depending on how you feel. And there's more; you'll be giving your brain a boost every time you ditch the lift, too. Researchers at Concordia University found the brain age can decreases by 0.58 years from daily stair-climbing! Ditch the tracker Contrary to what you may have been led to believe, your fitness tracker may not be helping you to drop a dress size as much as you think. A study published in JAMA found participants who didn't use a tracker lost five pounds more than those who did. The authors concluded that "the gap between recording information and changing behaviour is substantial." Instead, buddy-up If you're ditching the digital motivation, try replacing with a gymbuddy. It's the social encouragement and positive feedback that comes from using a tracker that helps to create long lasting behaviour change, rather than the data alone. University of Aberdeen researchers also found enlisting the help of a gym buddy increased the amount of exercise participants took.

Health & Beauty SALE

I hate what I've become I found out my husband was seeing another woman. I knew there was something between them – I knew her, she was part of our hobby group. He started sneaking out, which was difficult to do during Lockdown, but he made excuses. When I confronted him he said it was just friendship and he was going to call it off, but didn’t. He’s lied and lied to me repeatedly telling me it was me he wanted to be with, only for me to catch him at it again. I threw him out and to my horror he moved in with her. But he still bothered me with visits and phone calls, and it turned out that she went back with her husband. Over weeks of serious talks I let him back because he said it was me he loved, and he’d made a mistake. Then I discovered romantic texts she sent to him, and replies in the same vein so it appeared as though it is all on again. I’ve also seen Christmas gifts hidden away, which I know are not for me, he’d never buy me such nice things. I hate him so much, but I also love him and want him to love me. I never thought I would react in this way. Am I an idiot? No, you’re not an idiot. Of course you still love him, and he’s broken your heart. It’s not easy to switch off your feelings. And yes, you will be feeling hatred. Hate is a powerful emotion very similar to love. In order to hate someone, you must first have loved them. You are going through a rollercoaster of emotions at the moment. You will find the strength one day to finish this relationship, but you will need to love yourself more before that happens. Dry January We’ve all been there – after a fortnight of indulgence, Dry January can feel like a much-needed purge. The rules are simple: no alcoholic drinks whatsoever for the 31 days of January. But will abstaining from booze for one calendar month have a positive effect on our overall health? The latest research on Dry January has given the practice a vote of confidence. Staying off alcohol until February will put you more in control of your alcohol habits, while leaving you more energised, slimmer and with better skin, according to a University of Sussex study of 816 people who kept off alcohol for the month of January. More benefits Giving up alcohol in January has long been a trend; if you've never attempted Dry January yourself, then it's highly likely you have friends or relatives who have attempted to banish the booze for a month. While we all know there are many benefits of giving it up - for both your bank balance and your body - it turns out there's also a surprising longer-term bonus. Those who took part in Dry January were also all drinking significantly less eight months later, in August. And this wasn't just a trend among those who completed Dry January, but also among those who merely attempted it. While the average drinking days per week per participant were originally 4.3, this fell to 3.3 by the time the research concluded. This meant people were drinking on one less day per week on

average than before they did Dry Jan. The number of units they consumed each day that they drank also fell, and the frequency of being drunk dropped from 3.4 to 2.1 times per month. "The simple act of taking a month off alcohol helps people drink less in the long term; by August people are reporting one extra dry day per week. There are also considerable immediate benefits: 9 in 10 people save money, 7 in 10 sleep better and 3 in 5 lose weight," said Dr Richard de Visser, Reader in Psychology at the University of Sussex. "Interestingly, these changes in alcohol consumption have also been seen in the participants who didn’t manage to stay alcohol-free for the whole month - although they are a bit smaller. This shows that there are real benefits to just trying to complete Dry January." So whether you make it through the month without a drop to drink, even making an effort to stop could have some really positive long-term effects. Try these expert tips to cutting down on alcohol slowly without it being a total shock to the system: • Change your routines around the time of day you would normally have started drinking e.g. go for a walk after work, have a shower or bath and change into comfy clothes, hit a bucket of balls at the golf range, go for a swim or drive a different way home as by making many small changes you will help break the habitual routine of reaching for a wine or a beer. • Offer to be the driver so you can’t drink

at all. • Lose a drink on a table when you are out socially, make an excuse to go to the toilet and come back empty handed. • Switch to sparkling water with a slice of lemon or lime. When out socially make an excuse, say “I am thirsty”. No one will stop you having a water if you are thirsty. At home you can flavour sparkling water with fruits, mint leaves or rosemary stems. Try making a different flavour each night. • Visualise your life as a non drinker, see a film running in your mind as the new you. What your mind sees your mind delivers. • In the morning prepare a tray with a teapot, cup and herbal tea. When you finish your day you will know in your mind that you are going home to drink an herbal tea. You will begin to see the teapot in your mind rather than an alcoholic drink.

Blow away the January blues In addition to dry January, there are a range of things that you could try to blow away those January blues. Get moving: One of the best ways to boost your mood is with exercise and the good news is that you don't even need to join the January gym crowds to do this. Try an exercise you enjoy, whether it's walking, yoga or pilates, and blow away the cobwebs in the new year. There's no need for it to be a chore either as exercise could be a hobby you start doing with a friend, such as tennis, or a great activity for spending quality time with the kids, like swimming and cycling. Hit the sales What could be better than treating yourself to some retail therapy while making huge savings during the winter

sales? By sticking to a budget, setting out with a list and doing price comparison checks, you can bag some excellent bargains this January. Get crafty With the chilly nights and weekends making us want to stay in more, there's no better time to pick up those knitting needles, have fun with decoupage or enjoy stitching. Pamper yourself If the buzz of Christmas and New Year leaves you feeling frazzled, you have a great excuse to make January a time for relaxation. Treat yourself to some athome pampering, splurge on new skincare products or book a table at your favourite restaurant. Make time for yourself and indulge in that welldeserved "me-time" – even if it's simply a long bubble bath or tucking into a box of chocolates!

The DGT Strengthens Telematic Services

More than thirty of the services provided by the DGT can be performed by telephone, internet, or mobile application. As a result of the Covid crisis, the DGT has accelerated the digitisation of its services, making more than thirty services available online without having to make an appointment or go in person to the provincial Traffic headquarters. This drive for digitisation is a

commitment by the DGT to offer citizens another way of communicating with the administration, in a more comfortable, faster way, and with the same guarantees as if it were done in person. Although the Electronic Headquarters of the DGT began its journey at the end of last year with the inclusion of some administrative management, theCoronavirus has been a particularly important driver in accelerating

thedigitisation of many other services. According to Miguel Martín, IT Manager of the DGT, the Electronic Office pursues a triple objective: “to better organize the information on the procedures that can be carried out digitally with theDGT, secondly to offer personalised information and services through the my DGT section, and thirdly to improve the accessibility and usability of the Headquarters to make the user

experience more pleasant”. In the Electronic Office you can find everything related to a holder's driving licence or vehicle: request a duplicate of the licence, a temporary withdrawal, the payment of a fine or consult important information related to the DGT. The Headquarters is accessible in all the official languages of the Spanish State, Catalan, Basque and Galician, and also in German, English and French. According to Martin, “the objective is that by next year, practically all of our procedures do not require face-to-face travel, especially those with the greatest volume and impact.” DGT PROCEDURES WITHOUT LEAVING HOME Some of the procedures available via the online service are: Transfers (change of ownership) Vehicle report Usual driver communication Temporary withdrawal Notification of Vehicle registration temporarily deregistered sale Vehicles Final discharge CAT Authorized Centres (scrap yards) Ordinary registration and green plates Duplicate vehicle documentation Change of tax address

Regarding the procedures related to the driving licence, the DGT also offers the possibility of carrying them out or presenting them without going to the headquarters. Points query Duplicate due to loss, theft Permiseinternacional Recovery courses Points Driving licence Points certificate Renewal The Electronic Office also offers the possibility of consulting the driving licence exam note -the same afternoon of the theoretical exam and the next day, if it is the practical or theoretical exam carried out on paper- and the environmental badge that corresponds to our vehicle. The latter is the most common query with 21 million queries made. Appointment Request Other formalities Registration of powers of attorney Consult Environmental badges Distinctive acquisition You can access the electronic office at dgt.es, or via the official app miDGT available in the app store.

Snow Preparations

Emergency car lights replace triangles 2020 was not only a tragic year due to the pandemic, but on Spain’s roads too. There were a large number of accidents caused by vehicle breakdowns. To end this, the DGT has approved for 2021 the use of the V16 emergency light to replace the customary warning triangles.

For those who live in the sunnier areas of Spain, the thought of snow may seem a long and distant memory, but the reality is, even such sun-drenched places like the Costa Blanca, are less than an hour away from mountainous regions where snow can quickly close roads shutting off towns and villages. If there is a risk that you will be driving in snow, you really need to consider purchasing snow chains for your vehicle. Carrying snow chains is not a mandatory requirement, but in some areas, where snow packs the road, it becomes compulsory to use them, and so having them ready is advisable. The Guardia Civil, police or other authorities responsible for the road can impose a restriction without warning,

placing signs on the roads indicating that the use of snow chains compulsory, and if you don´t have them with you, you have just one option, to wait until the road has been cleared by a snowplough or naturally, until the restriction is lifted. Failure to adhere to the mandatory use is not only extremely dangerous, you risk a fine. If you see the “cadenasobligatorias”, or variant thereof, you must stop driving if you don´t have snow chains on your vehicle. It might also be wise to take additional equipment with you, such as warm blankets, emergency food and drink, and always advise somebody of your journey and route, as mobile phone signals are not always as reliable as we might hope.

This V16 emergency light means that a driver does not even have to leave the vehicle to signal a breakdown, because all you have to do is open the window and attach the light to the roof of the vehicle. The light is activated automatically as soon as it is magnetically attached to the roof of the car. The V16 is a flashing yellow light, which provides visibility for more than a kilometre. In general, the battery should last a year and a half, and can run for about two and a half hours in emergency mode. The lights are priced at around 20 euro and are available in car shops and online. From 2021, it is mandatory to have a light OR triangles. Gradually though, triangles will be phased out and from 2024, the light will replace the triangles completely. Given the greater safety of the light (mainly, the fact that in the instance of a breakdown the driver does not have to get out of the car and risk walking along a busy motorway to place a warning triangle) it is definitely worth investing in the V16 emergency light sooner rather than later.

Elche CF, 9 Point Present? Elche CF played 3 matches during the festive period, from a possible 9 points they secured just 2. On December 22nd they took on relegation placed Osasuna, a must win game as Elche had been gradually slipping down the table. The recent Positive Covid Test by the coach Jorge Almiron, meant that he had to direct his men virtually from isolation. Osasuna opened the scoring on 10 mins. They broke down the right, crossed past two Elche defenders and Edgar in goal and finished off with a light touch by Garcia at the back post. They fluffed their next opportunity, sending a golden rebound high over the bar. Elche started the 2nd half with a copy cat goal down the same side of the pitch. They crossed into the box, followed by a flick from Rigoni which found Fidel at the far post 1-1. Just minutes later, Osasuna replied with another similar effort, the cross found Brasanac who stroked the ball past Edgar for 1-2. Elche were then gifted a golden opportunity courtesy of an Osasuna defensive mistake. Thankfully Carillo converted with a well taken strike inside the box to save a point for the Frankiverdes. Final Score 2-2. Playing at home again, Elche faced the Mighty Real Madrid on December 30th. A team costing 436 million against one costing 34 million, a mind boggling, eye watering fact! Real Madrid pressed early and intensely. With Edgar already beaten, Marcelo saw

his shot smash the bar. Next, Asensio fired a bullet toward Edgar who incredibly tipped it onto the bar, only to see Modric head home the rebound from close range. Elche hung on and it was 0-1 at half time. On 52 mins Elche were awarded a penalty which Fidel fired past Courtois to even up the score. Buoyed up Elche's Lucas Boye narrowly missed as his shot shaved the wrong side of Real's post. Then Real started pressing once again and Edgar once again saved his team in the final minutes, denying both Kroos and Ramos certain winners. However the last kick of the game fell to Elche and Verdu, only for his free kick to be superbly tipped away by Cortois. Final Score Elche 1-1, a brilliant result. Finally Elche travelled to the San Mames to take on Athletic Bilbao. The first half was all about Athletic playing good football and Elche playing bad football as they gave the ball away time and time again. The deciding goal of the game come on the 25th minute by the captain Iker Muniain, nicked named Bart Simpson he has only ever played at Bilbao. He made his debut in 2009 and has so far notched up over 430 appearances. Elche played a little better during the second half and Athletic missed many opportunities resulting in a 1-0 scoreline. Elche CF will play Getafe on Sunday the 10th 18:30.

As soon as spectators are allowed back into the stadiums, EuroTourGuide will once again be offering Coach Tours with Match Tickets to support Elche CF. Please sign up to receive your free newsletter on www.eurotourguide.com

Welcome to the Premier League 2021 style where Brighton’s Dan Burn wishes it was still 2020, Big Sham is far less chirpy and several Premier League footballers feel that certain rules don’t apply to them - even if Jose has sent you a lovely bit of pig. We start the New Year with Sam Allardyce and West Bromwich Albion would you like us ‘pundits’ to chalk the last two batterings with an aggregate score of nine to diddly squat down to luck, Sam? Or would you like to take as much credit for them as you were angling for from the 1-1 draw at Anfield - a result, it would be fair to say, is looking more and more down to luck each time WBA kick off again. Allardyce is already the second favourite to get the sack next and he’s been there less time than Kyle Walker’s been self-isolating. In that short space of time, Allardyce has worked out how to wear his mask correctly, suggested a team that went on to batter his lot 4-0 were in a relegation battle and called for the league to stop for a couple of weeks though rumours that his request for that was so he could teach Ajayi how to actually defend are currently unconfirmed. If I described an Arsenal goal where the player received the ball wide on the left, shimmied inside on to his right foot and then curled one top bins, you’d probably assume I was talking about Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang back in those not-solong-ago days when he was a bit of a goal threat. And, of course, you’d be wrong to assume that - this beauty was scored by Kieran Tierney, a player recently being likened to Stuart Pearce by Tony Cascarino. I’m sorry Tone, but I don’t think I ever saw Pearce do that with his right foot. Mikel Arteta says ‘the handbrake is off’ which begs the question what it was doing on in the first place? Mesut Ozil is no fool - he’s loving the impact being had (in his position, mind you) by Emile Smith-Rowe, calling him the ‘difference-maker’ and suggesting the team looks good with a number ten in it. Three was the magic number at Spurs - not the amount of Tottenham players getting together for a Christmas bash but the goals scored against Leeds United. Harry Kane was celebrating the birth of his third child by scoring from the spot - despite the foul starting outside the area and VAR choosing to ignore that fact etc etc and then setting up his telepathic strike-partner Son for his 100th goal in a Spurs shirt. It’s fair to say that Meslier is the perfect goalkeeper for Leeds, with all the flak coming his way. He specialises in chaos, you never know what is coming next - brilliant or terrible - and he is happy to go looking for work rather than waiting to see what unfolds. Leeds were far from terrible here, though - they created 10 decent chances themselves, to Tottenham’s

12. The problem was, Tottenham took theirs. Three was an equally magic number for Manchester City - and it had nothing to do with Benjamin Mendy. City scored three at Stamford Bridge, took all three points and notched up their third successive Premier League win for the first time this season. To say 3-1 flattered Chelsea tells you a lot - to quote an unusually subdued Roy Keane, Chelsea were indeed ‘shocking’ and you have to wonder how long it takes for Roman Abramovich to deduce that he should be getting a lot more for that £200m plus spent in the summer. It’s rare Alan Shearer makes an oldschool comment that I can get on board with, but Peppy G’s side did have a debutant goalkeeper so surely it made sense to test him as soon as possible to see what he was made of? By the time Callum Hudson-Odoi netted the injury-time nonconsolation that ship had well and truly sailed. If King Klopp is going to pick off his

title-challengers by suggesting they are favourites to take Liverpool’s crown, then he’d do well to shout from the rooftops that Man City are back and are the ones who will be lifting the trophy come May. Who had Brighton versus Wolves down as a six-goal thriller? Dan Burn’s substitution was the classic case of stable doors and bolting horses as the damage to Brighton had already been done with one of the worst individual displays of the season (I was going to say 2021 for jokes, but it would stand the test of time in 2020 too). Just the mention of Adama Traore is likely to bring Burn out in cold sweats for the foreseeable future. Who enjoyed the way Palace’s big summer signing Ezed his way through the Sheffield United defence, then? Eze scored a lovely goal as any Blades’ New Year Resolutions to start winning football matches fell at the first hurdle. According to OGS, United ‘must improve’ to win the title this season however, he didn’t mention exactly how much or where Liverpool fit into this equation so let’s add ‘more than is actually possible’ to the end of that

statement for him. That said, if they follow Paul Pogba’s advice to Luke Shaw to the letter, United could feasibly increase their penalties given quota from two a game to four a game, and the way Bruno tucks them away could guarantee several more wins. Anthony Martial, a player that Manchester United history will place at the same level as Peter Davenport, opened his 2021 account - but Villa’s manager Dean Smith definitely had a point when he observed it looked like Pogba had tripped himself up for their penalty. If only there was some kind of video review system available this new year to sort out these kinds of errors. The best thing about Newcastle versus Leicester City was Andy Carroll scoring his one-and-only goal of 2021 which is, folks, one more than Gareth Bale will score for Spurs this year, Recently improved Everton lost to recently improved West Ham United with the winning strike coming from the new Fellaini. Football may have moved on since the Moysiah was at Goodison but his tactical blueprint has not.
