Record numbers for Alicante province: 43 per hour See Main Advert on page 26-27

Last week was the worst week for infections since the pandemic began with 43 infections every hour in the Alicante province. Figures for the last seven days have broken the record, with more than 7,200 positive diagnoses. At the weekend, for the first time in months

the Generalitat Valenciana issued data on infections on a Sunday, a clear indication that the situation is becoming more and more worrying. Figures for Saturday in the Alicante province (1943 infections) are the highest daily record since the crisis began. The latest overall figures for the region show that the total of positives in the Valencian Community since the coronavirus pandemic began is 171,505. Broken down by the three provinces: 96,760 from Valencia, followed by 56,233 in Alicante and 18,487 in Castellón. Non urgent operations postponed, visitors barred, field hospitals being prepared The government of the Valencian Community postponed all non-urgent operations and has barred visitors to hospitals across the region in the face of

this alarming increase in admissions due to Covid. In an announcement made on Friday, the Valencian Ministry of Health revealed it had taken the decision to postpone all non-urgent surgical activity and diagnostic tests in public hospitals across the Valencian Community. The Ministry has also issued orders that all available ICU beds are to be readied and that visits to patients are now prohibited. The new restrictions are part of a document, “'Organizational measures for health care in response to covid-19” issued by Health Minister Ana Barceló and revealed by CESM medical union. Given the current situation in terms of hospital bed and ICU occupancy, the Ministry of Health confirmed it has suspended all scheduled non-urgent surgical activity including surgery without admission. Diagnostic tests and other non urgent

Valencian President says home confinement rumours are fake news The Generalitat Valenciana has taken to the social network Twitter to address rumours that that home confinement is going to be imposed in the in the Valencian Community due to the uncontrolled contagion levels. The ‘news’ has been circulating on the internet and social media and the statement has been confirmed as a "hoax" by the

Generalitat Valenciana. In the message on Twitter on Sunday they said that "tomorrow it will be made official and public" that this is not true. In less than 140 characters, the Consell explained that the claim was a "hoax" and asked members of the public to "verify and obtain information on the official Generalitat channels

before spreading any news." The head of the Consell, Ximo Puig , when asked recently by RNE about a possible home confinement said "nothing can be ruled out because we are going to live extraordinarily complicated weeks" but once again reiterated that this would be a final step after all other options have been exhausted.

Ryanair stops flights to Spain Low-cost airline Ryanair is completely cancelling hundreds of flights to Spain including those scheduled for Alicante and Murcia until the end of March. Despite having previously refused to cancel flights, which meant they were not obliged to offer a refund, the Irish airline has now announced that most flights from Ireland and the UK will be cancelled in the coming weeks. Customers whose flights have been cancelled will be emailed to let them know of any refund or

reschedule that they are entitled to. Checking on the Ryanair website, it is impossible to book flights to Spain until the end of

March. Ryanair has criticised both the UK and Irish Governments for lockingdown the general

population and confirmed that it is set to have a 96 percent fall in passenger numbers until April. Ryanair has also said it expects to lose 95 percent of its traffic in February and March, with few if any flights operating from the UK and Ireland, because of the latest Covid lockdowns and travel restrictions. The Dublin-based airline, which normally carries the most passengers in Europe, lambasted “brutal lockdowns” and called on the Irish government in particular to accelerate vaccinations.

Continued from page 1 scheduled admissions are also postponed, except in the case of cancer treatments. Health workers have been instructed to prioritise attendance by patients through non-contact consultations by Primary Care staff. "Significant increase in cumulative incidence" According to the general director of Healthcare, Mariam García Layunta, the situation in the Valencian Community is the same as in the rest of Spain and Europe, in that officials are "recently noticing a significant increase in the accumulated incidence". García Layunta said, “The number of cases is increasing, and that is, logically, creating an increase in the pressure on our hospitals, both for hospital admissions to general wards and to ICU". García Layunta confirmed that the health departments, as they did during the first wave, are applying their contingency plans, which basically consist of “expanding spaces, doubling beds in order allow for greater healthcare capacity in the ward and in ICU.” “This means that at this moment we still have sufficient capacity to respond to the demands we are having and we also have other facilities that we did not have in the first wave, such as the field hospitals that are ready to be installed or the Ernest Lluch hospital,” she explained. She also recalled that back in November, the Minister of Health issued a resolution so that the resources of private hospitals would be made available to public healthcare in a publicprivate collaboration. Field hospitals are being prepared The spectacular increase in positive cases in recent weeks is straining hospital capacity to such an extent that sources from the Ministry of Health confirmed that field hospitals in the three provinces - Alicante, Valencia and Castellón - are being prepared for a possible saturation of the system in the forthcoming weeks. Other instructions from the Ministry include an order that transfers of noncovid critically ill patients will be carried out to private hospitals, preferably according to the geographical proximity to the patient's home. In addition, all hospital beds must be ‘enabled’, which includes the doubling up of individual rooms and the use of spaces usually dedicated to other activities. This is the case, for example, in Elche General

Hospital where beds have been installed in the hospital chapel and in Vega Baja where operating theatres are being converted to secondary ICUs. Hospital La Fe in Valencia, and the General Hospitals of Alicante and Castellón have been instructed to prepare all necessary infrastructure so that field hospitals are operational in the shortest time possible. Surgical patients that are not in a position to be delayed will be referred, primarily if they are oncology patients to the IVO (Valencian Oncology Institute) and if it is not possible, these and the remainder of urgent surgical cases would be referred to private hospitals. The instructions for admitting covid patients indicate that both suspected and confirmed cases can be housed on the same ward until capacity is reached. When hospital occupation is high enough, two patients can be placed in the same private room (if both cases are confirmed positive). Furthermore, in health departments with two hospitals, covid cases will be confined, as far as possible, to the same hospital. Non urgent diagnostic tests are suspended, as are non urgent scheduled admissions, except in the case of rapid cancer screening (breast cancer, colon cancer, etc). Visits to patients are prohibited The Health Ministry has prohibited visits to admitted. However, hospitals will allow, if necessary, the presence of a single companion as caregiver to patients deemed chronic or long-stay, minors or dependents, as well as women giving birth. Likewise, an exception will be considered in special cases such as complex social situations or end of life care, or if it is considered that the physical

presence of a companion or volunteer is necessary. In every case, any person with respiratory symptoms or fever must refrain from accompanying a patient to a hospital or health centre. In addition, management must contact the families of those admitted at least once a day to report changes and allow, as far as possible, contact through tablet-type devices, provided for use by the hospital if the patient does not have one of their own. End of life care Due to the latest restrictions, new instructions for end of life care indicate that in a terminal situation, the patient should be transferred to an individual room that is silent and as far away as possible from the other rooms, whenever the situation allows it. In this situation, access will not be granted to any family member with suspected Covid symptoms. If a family member is allowed, a device may be provided so that the visitor can put the rest of the family in contact with the patient. In the case of covid patients, the necessary protection will be provided to the visitor during the process.

Police to check shopping centre capacity The Generalitat has asked the representatives of the main associations of shopping centres and department stores – including Zenia Boulevard and Habaneras - to take extreme measures to control capacity to prevent the spread of COVID-19, which at this time are set by the health authority at 30 percent of maximum occupancy. A spokesman indicated "the concern of the Consell that large commercial areas are safe spaces and comply with the maximum capacity of 30 percent" set by the Ministry of Health in the Resolution made on 6th January. The Interior Minister announced that the Generalitat Police will intensify the controls of these establishments to ensure compliance with the regulations. Minister Gabriela Bravo has pointed out that now, after the closure of the hotel and catering establishments at 5pm, an assigned police unit "will redirect part of its staff to control the capacity of commercial establishments." At a meeting, between councillors and representatives of the National Association of Large Distribution Companies (Anged) and he Association of Ceetrus Shopping Centres it was requested that large shopping

with the measures and also provide data for future decision-making. The Minister of Sustainable Economy,

outlets have capacity control mechanisms that count the people inside them in real time and also requested that this information be visible at the entrance of the establishments. Both Anged and Ceetrus have committed to transferring this request to their associates and to working on the implementation of these devices so that the occupation in real time is visible both to the clientele and to the security forces and bodies in charge of compliance with health measures. Another of the commitments arising from the meeting will allow the Generalitat to have periodic information provided by Anged and Ceetrus on the assistance to each shopping centre in the Community. This information will make it possible to objectively assess compliance

Productive Sectors, Commerce and Labour, Rafa Climent, said he was thankful "for the collaboration that shopping centres and large supermarkets have shown from the first moment in May" while acknowledging "the effort that these establishments have made to adapt their spaces to Health regulations to prevent COVID . “Most of these establishments have done their job well and comply with the measures that the Generalitat has adopted so that shopping centres are safe spaces, but it is necessary that all centres continue with maximum security measures for both employees and consumers," he added.

Torrevieja rushes massive shipment of salt to Madrid Torrevieja salt workers are readying a shipment of 3,500 tons of salt destined for Madrid. Madrid City Council is sending 90 trucks to move the cargo between Monday and Tuesday of this week. Work began at 7am yesterday (Monday) to load the salt to help combat the ice and snow that has brought central Spain to a halt. Mayor of Torrevieja Eduardo Dolón spoke with his counterpart in Madrid, Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida with the offer of help that Madrid readily accepted. Dolón remarked that this is unprecedented in the history of Torreiveja salt works – 3.5 million

kilos of salt being prepared in just 24 hours. Madrid City Council is sending between 80 and 90 trucks which will be loaded with salt by excavators at the Torrevieja facility. Many trucks are already en route to Torrevieja and the rest are expected to arrive today (Tuesday). A further 50 trucks with bagged salt already departed Torrevieja on Monday destined for other parts of Spain with great demand for salt in the wake of Storm Filomena. For this reason, and with the anticipation of more trucks

arriving from elsewhere in Spain and Europe, Torrevieja Town Hall has made preparations avoid traffic jams on the N332. Local Police, Guardia Civil and Proteccion Civil will be on hand to direct traffic and ensure there are no delays (as happened last week with the number of trucks queuing at the salt works for loading). In addition, two special parking areas have been set up so that trucks can wait off the main thoroughfare. These are located at Acequión and beside the water park. Each of the trucks will carry special permits due to the various border closures around Spain.

Storm Orihuela Chamber launches campaign to Filomena was promote local business a blessing The Orihuela Chamber of Commerce has launched a campaign to promote and encourage purchases in local shops. The ‘Consume Orihuela’ campaign will support a promotional video and two training courses aimed at business owners and is a joint initiative between the Chamber and the City Council. The campaign will be communicated through social networks and the Orihuela Chamber website, as well as different local and regional media. With the title 'Consume Orihuela' some of the many reasons that exist to buy in the city are highlighted to the public. "History, tradition, trust, closeness, style, freshness or quality are some of the words that make up this campaign and that define our local business, while demonstrating that it is not necessary to go abroad to have all that," said Mario Martinez the president of the Orihuela Chamber. He added that "this is the year of promoting our business more than ever, the year of helping it get ahead". The Councillor for Commerce, Víctor Bernabéu, recalled the diversities that the municipality has experienced and with it, its business community, such as “the

damages caused by the DANA of September 2019, the pandemic due to the COVID-19 virus that we still suffer”. Councillor Bernabéu thanked the Orihuela Chamber for its involvement and highlighted the need to work together, as is being done, to maximise the synergies between the two entities. Apart from the 'Consume Orihuela' campaign and within the City Council's Commercial Promotion initiatives, Orihuela Chamber has produced a video that will also serve as a promotional tool for commerce and hospitality, but also for the industrial sector and related companies. Mario Martine explained that “in our territory there are many businesses with a great presence inside and outside our borders”. To help companies reach full potential training sessions have been carried out in collaboration with the Department of Commerce of the Orihuela City Council and the Orihuela Chamber to cover topics such as corporate design and commercial marketing. These talks can be viewed online on the Cámara Orihuela website: www.camaraorihuela.es

Storm Filomena spread around 40 litres per square meter of much-needed rain across the orchards and fields of the Vega Baja and has been heralded as quite a "blessing" by local farmers. The Bajo Segura had suffered months of extremely low rainfall with a very dry autumn and winter. The cold, without intense frosts, has also been welcomed as citrus fruits, which are the main products of the local agricultural sector, needed that rainwater and the cold to flourish more strongly come spring. The storm has been positive for all crops, even for the almond trees in the dry areas of Torremendo and Barbarroja - there are 1,500 hectares that needed rain and cold to begin to encourage flowering, which this year has not happened in December as is usually the case in the region. The rain will improve the calibre of some varieties of mandarin now in the middle of the final harvest season, in addition to lemons – for which demand has fallen because at least 40 percent is usually purchased by the hospitality sector. The lemon is vital for the agricultural sector and especially in the Vega Baja where most of its growth is concentrated; it has an annual turnover of around 110 million euros in the province. The artichoke has once again reached 2 euros per kilo at first sale after starting the season with three euros per kilo. Artichoke production in this area has an annual turnover of around 15 million euros.

Baby leaves Valencia Hospital after 70 days fighting covid

New York Times names Spanish firm as ‘Best in the World’

A barely three-month-old baby has left hospital this week after spending nearly all of his short life fighting Covid-19, including a stint in intensive care, the hospital said. "Petru is one of those exceptional cases where Covid-19 has badly affected a minor," said the Vithas 9 de Octubre hospital in the port city of Valencia in a statement released on Thursday. The infant was born "in perfect condition" in October, but on going home with his mother he became infected through his brother who was asymptomatic and had to go back to hospital when he was just nine days old. He was immediately placed in the paediatric intensive care unit after initially showing "breathing problems and later on feeding problems which required a complex process of rehabilitation". His

illness "caused great distress" to his parents who "could only see him by video link... until he finally tested negative". Footage released by the hospital showed medics and nursing staff applauding as his parents were finally able to take him home, his mother appearing close to tears with emotion. Severe cases of Covid-19 generally affect much older people. In Spain, two-thirds of the victims who died since May have been over 80 years old, according to figures from the Carlos III health institute. By contrast, only 12 children under the age of two died during the same period out of the 21,382 confirmed cases among this age group. Spain has so far counted more than two million confirmed cases of Covid-19 and nearly 52,000 deaths.

A Spanish company has been named as one of the best in the world by the New York Times annual list for 2020. Every year, the US-based broadsheet reviews the political, social and health situation nationally and globally and picks out the businesses that have contributed the most in humanitarian, scientific and technological terms to improve the state of the world and quality of life in general through their contributions. Among them, mountain and forestry engineer Joaquín Ramírez's firm based in the province of León, Technosylva, has been highlighted. Technosylva's modelling software enabling authorities to predict forest fires – calculating the direction of the flames, speed, and climate conditions that could influence its progress – turned out to be crucial in the fight against the infernos in California last year. The programme created by the startup company was used in nine US States, helping the country's department of forestry culture and fire protection in working out strategy for tackling these natural disasters – in particular the one that swept through the south-west. Technosylva, run by a Spaniard and based in Spain, branched out into San Diego, California in April 2020 when it won a contract for the fire prediction service it provided. The firm was up against 131 corporate giants – even Google and Microsoft – when it won the bid.

We all know the issue right now regarding getting out and about. Especially with the travel restrictions. But life will not be limited like this forever! Reserving a property now, ready for your future is the best way of securing a great investment. In 2020 it was reported that 82% of the population needed something to look forward to, to keep a healthy and positive mind. After just one week of being in lockdown their wish was travelling to warmer shores again. Spain has always stood the test of time as being the most popular holiday destination in Europe. We’ve witnessed that first hand! So what if you can’t actually make it to the area you wish to buy a home in? Bearing in mind, you’re not the only ones looking! There are buyers that are able to visit, especially if they’re moving within the same area. By putting your search on hold, you could risk losing out on a great opportunity! Thanks to technology, buying a home without physically seeing it in person, is more common than you think. It’s called buying “sight unseen.” If you’re thinking of buying a house “sight unseen,” here are 3 top tips to reser-ving a home without stepping one foot inside!:

1. Find a local Real Estate Agent you trust. You need them to be your eyes and ears, and not only tell you the good things, but you need to hear the bad things too. Make sure they’re local to the area you’re buying in. A local Agent will know all the ins and outs from a social perspective, and not just read you a list of facts about the property. 2. Watch the virtual tour (video). This is the best option, as you can have a thorough look throughout the home, going through room by room. You can easily see things like flooring to air conditioning units mounted on the walls. Also, if the home is being sold furnished, you can have the inventory next to you, as you scan each room. 3. Most important of all: You need to accept the home will not be 100% per-fect. There may be small things that you won’t like, or that need fixing. As long as you’re prepared, it will work out fine. Buying a home “sight unseen” is a great option and very popular right now. Use the technology that’s out there, to your own benefit. Remember “still images” can be cropped to hide things from view, whereas virtual tours (videos) can show you, even the minutest of detail! Whether you’re ready to buy your home “sight unseen,” or are here to view it in person, start by taking a look at our amazing 3D videos online. Head to www.homes4u.es today!

In addition, we are also making provision to increased staff numbers in order to provide this higher level of service.” The statement did not clarify how many officers will be under the command of the new Chief; although the figures offered by the opposition party claim that there are only 8 police officers. Police reinforcement has remained one of the main demands of the residents of San Miguel de Salinas, which has more than six thousand residents, for the past year. This is particularly important in a municipal area with a large dispersion of isolated urbanisations. Neither the successive governments of the PP - the last one in coalition with Cs nor the current one, have been able to resolve the lack of officers, which in this location is made more concerning given the limited resources of the Civil Guard, which has no 24-hour service in the municipality. This is particular felt at weekends when, in an emergency the patrols have to relocate from Torrevieja, which is more than 10 kilometres away.

5,000€ from 83yearold A woman has been arrested for an alleged theft after stealing thousands from an 83-year-old woman on the Costa Calida. The accused was identified after CCTV footage showed her stalking her victim at the bank of a local bank. She was seen using the cash-point machine as she watched the elderly person withdraw 5,000e from their savings account at the cash desk from the bank teller. The thief then followed her victim out of the bank and to the shopping area in Puerto Mazarron. She bided her time and waited until the victim was distracted and grabbed the cash from the shopping trolley. Luckily the Police were able to identify the suspect thanks to the ATM transaction she made in the bank whilst she was casing her victim. The arrested is due to appear in court at Totana.

Rojales installs 30 bat boxes Concerns over slow Covid for natural insect control vaccination programme A total of 30 bats boxes were placed in various areas around Rojales recently in order to provide shelter for different species of these wonderful nocturnal mammals. The initiative by Rojales town hall aims to help the natural control of insects, since bats are known as great insect eaters – and luckily, they love eating mosquitoes! "It is estimated that every night a single bat can consume up to 1,000 insects the size of a mosquito", explained Rojales’ Councillor for Culture, Historical and Natural Heritage, Inmaculada Chazarra. The councillor also revealed that the town hall will continue this environmental project with the installation of more bat boxes and also, nesting boxes for various species of bird as well as insect hotels. Councillor Chazarra pointed out that bats naturally prey on several species of moth, many of which

constitute pests for agriculture during the larval phase. The wooden shelter boxes have been installed in various spots near the Segura riverbed by the Association of Southeast Naturalists (Anse). Over the next few months, experts from the group will periodically monitor the boxes to verify the success of the

project. This is the second phase of the project in Rojales. Last year, 31 wooden nest and shelter boxes were installed in the town itself, designed to house bats, as well as other species such as the owl, kestrel, sparrow, hoopoe, wryneck, chickadees, titmouse and the long tailed tit.

English lady first to get Covid jab at Orihuela Costa care home Last Friday (8th January) saw 98year-old Pamela Sullivan become the first person to receive the Covid vaccination. The Pfizer vaccines arrived at the Savia Residence for the Elderly in Orihuela Costa and Pam became

the first resident to get her jab, Juan Jose Paredes was the first of the homes care workers to be vaccinated. The momentous occasion was witnessed by the Orihuela Councillor for Health Jose Galiano

and the Director for the care home Ma Luz Serrano. Those living and working in two residences for the elderly in Orihuela have also received the first dose of the Covid-19 jab.

Salvador Illa has announced that the first treatments will arrive in seven to 10 days from now as concerns grow about the speed of the vaccination drive in some regions. The Spanish Health Minister said that the country will receive 600,000 doses of the coronavirus vaccine developed by US pharmaceutical company Moderna, which was granted conditional marketing authorisation by the European Commission. “The forecast we have based on the information from the company is that we will begin to receive the first doses of this vaccine in seven to 10 days’ time,” said Illa at a public event in Catalonia. The shipments will be spaced out over a six-week period. According to Illa, the vaccine will be stored at the Health Ministry’s central storage centre and from there be distributed to the regions. “We have already informed the coordination teams of the regions,” said Illa. The health minister explained that the Moderna vaccine requires two shots, meaning that the 600,000 doses will immunize 300,000 people. The Moderna vaccine is the second coronavirus vaccine to be approved by the European

Medicines Agency and authorized by the European Commission, after the vaccine developed by US pharmaceutical Pfizer and German laboratory BioNTech was given the green light at the end of 2020. “It is very positive news,” said Illa, who added that the arrival of a second vaccine will “not change” Spain’s vaccination plan. With respect to the immunization drive, which has been slow to roll out in some regions, Illa was positive: “We are reaching a steady pace. Now we are going to receive new doses of the Pfizer vaccine, we are going to administer the Moderna vaccine and there are others that are being reviewed by the European Medicines Agency, so we believe that by summer we will be able to achieve the very

significant figure of 70 percent of the population vaccinated.” With respect to the uneven speed of the vaccine rollout, Illa did make any comment, arguing the government is “not going to rank” the regions. Asturias has administered 100 percent of the vaccines it received in the first shipment, and is now at 54 percent following a second delivery this week. But in Madrid the figure is currently 5.4 percent and in Cantabria it is 5.1 percent. The health minister said he believed regional authorities were administering the vaccine as quickly as possible and following the criteria of “safety and efficiency.” “This is a longdistance race, not a sprint, and the object is to carry out a longdistance race that is going to last for months,” said Illa.

Record cold spell for Spain The mercury dropped to levels typical of a Siberian winter in Spain mid-last week. According to the met office, last Tuesday night broke historic lowest-temperature records, and then Wednesday night smashed them yet again. On Wednesday (6th January ) at 5.19 in the morning, the weather station in Clot del Tuc de la Llança in the land-locked Catalunya province of Lleida, just on the edge of the Pyrénées, showed a temperature of -34.1ºC – breaking the record set in 1956, of -32ºC at the weather station of EstanyGento in the same province. However, before Spain and the rest of the world had closed their mouths after a collective global jawdropping and picked themselves up off the floor, the mainland broke its own record yet again, having only just done so for the first time in nearly 65 years. The weather station in Vega de Liordes in the province of León registered, at 7.06 on Thursday morning, a figure that would even be cold for Arctic Greenland in January: 35.6ºC. Castilla y León is typically one of Spain's coldest regions in winter, and summers – although warm and pleasant – are far less sweltering than on the southern and Mediterranean coasts; winters in this centre-northern region are frequently very chilly and snow at

ground-level is very common towards the end and beginning of the year, although even then, a hard winter might mean night temperatures of -10ºC, which would normally be considered newsworthy. The following days on the Mediterranean saw night temperatures ranging from around 3ºC to 7ºC and day figures between 5ºC and 14ºC, although the 'real feel' was typically lower. Spain has been battling the end of 'storm Filomena', although 'storm' conditions were not experienced everywhere; mostly,

she brought exceptional cold.

snow

and

Previous bad weather records Along with the 1956 temperature of -32ºC in the province of Lleida, earlier 'unprecedented' lows which have now been surpassed include that of Calamocha, Teruel province on

17th December, 1963, when the mercury plunged to -30ºC – at the time, the coldest December temperature ever recorded, and certainly chillier than local residents could ever remember, even in a province where winters at high altitudes regularly come in at -7ºC and, although not 'normal', -12ºC or thereabouts is not exactly headline-grabbing. We have also experienced prolonged rainfall recently and whilst wet weather is not frequent but, when it happens, it really means business: Autumn often brings a spell of a few days of nearmonsoon-like conditions with flash floods, followed by weeks and weeks of clear skies and mild temperatures, a phenomenon known as a gota fría. At these times, it is not unheard of for rainfall to reach 40 litres per square metre within an hour (about four centimetres, or just under two inches), although recordbreaking downpours have registered over 20 times that amount. In 1987 the southernmost town in the province, Oliva, was hit by a whopping 817 litres of rain in 24 hours (81.7 centimetres, or 32.17 inches – over 2'8” of water), and residents on news broadcasts still show reporters the pen-marks they drew on their inside walls to show how high the floods reached.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP Despite ending last year on a high, sterling hasn’t enjoyed the best start to 2021. This is in large part due to the third lockdown, announced by the Prime Minister earlier this week. The PM confirmedthat people should work from home where possible and that schools and non-essential shops must close. The next day, Chancellor Rishi Sunak provided some good news, however. This came in the form of a £4.6 billion package of helpfor retail, hospitality and leisure firms that have been forced to close. On top of this, an additional £594 million will go to local authorities and other bodies. In the wake of the announcement regarding this relief package, the attitude of investors was not overly positive. They appear unconvinced that the money is substantial enough to offset the negative effects of the lockdown. As a result, GBP struggled to keep its head above water for the opening week of the year. While it was not the worst performer of the bunch, thanks to the Japanese yen having an even tougher time,it still lost an average of 0.7%. This included surrendering a quarter of a cent each to the USD and EUR. Despite averting the uncertainty of a no-deal Brexit, and a new financial package from Sunak being revealed, the sentiment amongst investors is to keep their distance from the pound until they are given more to be cheerful for.

EURO Developments in both London and Washington provided a handy smokescreen for a highly uneventful period in the Eurozone, allowing the euro to gain a quarter of a cent against the pound.Economic data at the end of last year were few and far between, while even the early 2021 figures have not provided much to write home about. Most of what was of note came from Germany. Retail salescontinued their recovery in November 2020, with the 1.9% increase boosting sales 4.1% higher YoY. Also, factory orders in Germany were up 4.0% from their pre-crisis level, while unemploymentfell for a sixth straight month. Across the rest of the Eurozone, the ecostatshaven’t been as promising. Purchasing managers’ indices were lower than forecast in most cases. The main anchor weighing them down appears to have been the services sector. Consumer price inflation remained depressed in Spain (-0.6%), France (0%), Germany (-0.7%) and Italy (-0.3%). In addition, across pan-Eurozone, prices dropped by 0.3% last year. Fortunately for the euro, it did not pay too close attention to the downbeat data. While it lost an average of 0.5%, things could have been worse and it remained unchanged against the USD and JPY, enjoying a lead over GBP as the week comes to a close.

Brexit skirmish erupts as Spain demands Gibraltar police presence Gibraltar's post-Brexit agreement with Spain is already in jeopardy as the European Union member state has requested a police presence at docks and airport between the two countries. Jesus Verdu from the University of CĂĄdiz' explained that it will be difficult for Gibraltar to accept that Spain has the last word on certain policies. He added that Gibraltar will eventually accept the measures but it will not be easy. Mr Verdu said: "While the parties have negotiated this deal quickly it could have been easier to find a solution. "Now with all the parties exposed by the daylight of Brexit, it is difficult for Gibraltar to accept that the last word is going to come from Spain. "Since there is no other option anymore, I believe Gibraltar will eventually accept it but it will not be easy. "It will need to be an exercise either of a certain makeup or of compensation for Gibraltar in the negotiating process." Earlier this week Spain's Foreign Minister claimed that Brexit will let his country have sole control over who can enter Gibraltar. Gibraltar agreed to a deal to join the Schengen travel zone hours before the UK left the European Union.

The deal between Gibraltar and the rest of the EU ensures the free movement of people and goods from the bloc into the territory. Spanish foreign minister Arancha GonzĂĄlez Laya told Spanish newspaper El Pais: "Schengen has a set of rules, procedures, and instruments to apply them, including its database, to which only Spain has access. "Gibraltar and the United Kingdom do not. "In order to enter a Gibraltar integrated into the Schengen area, the responsibility for border control is in Spanish hands.

"That is why the final decision on who enters the Schengen area is Spanish, of course." The Spanish foreign minister added: "With this agreement, the fence is removed, Schengen is applied to Gibraltar. "It allows for the lifting of controls between Gibraltar and Spain." Gibraltar voted Remain in the 2016 referendum but First Minister Fabian Picardo has since insisted the territory should make the best of the situation. The new deal will enable the 15,000 Spanish people to continue working in Gibraltar without barriers.

Interest continues in Spanish holiday homes Despite the uncertainty surrounding Brexit and its implications for Brits living abroad, estate agents, real estate developers and property portals are all reporting strong interest in the Spanish property market, with enquiries already significantly up on last year. Whilst Covid-19 is still casting a shadow of uncertainty over people's lives, the pandemic has pushed people to reassess how they might use a second home, and a trend towards longer stays in sunny climes combined with extended periods of remote working is emerging. With vaccination now well underway across the globe, there is an air of cautious optimism surrounding the Spanish property market, with potential

buyers making enquiries about homes both on the mainland and the Spanish islands. The property portal thinkSPAIN has seen a 47 percent rise in buyer enquiries during the first five days of 2021 compared with 2020, with a 19 percent rise in UK/English language enquiries over the same period, following on from a 66 percent year-onyear increase in 2020. Demand for new build properties also appears to be increasing with the real estate developer Taylor Wimpey EspaĂąa reporting "a flurry of enquiries from Britons interested in buying homes in Spain", citing a 30 percent increase in leads in the first week of January 2021 compared with the same period in 2020. In addition, it has said

that website traffic from the UK is up 57 percent over the same timeframe, with its first sale of the year being made to a British buyer. As more people than ever have had to work remotely because of the coronavirus lockdown, many are now re-evaluating whether their 'remote' location has to be in the UK, or whether it could, in fact, be in one of Spain's sunny islands or coastal resorts. Remote working has opened many more people's eyes to the possibility of extended stays overseas. Those who own second homes in Spain can now genuinely consider the option of splitting their time between the UK and Spain, rather than using their holiday homes just for a few weeks in the summer.

New strain of coronavirus in Spain for two weeks The new, more contagious strain of the coronavirus that was first detected in the United Kingdom is already circulating in Spain with the two carriers people who have no epidemiological connection with that country. That’s according to a preliminary genetic analysis carried out by the Fisabio Foundation research institute in Valencia, which has found the same mutations of SARS-CoV-2 that were detected in the UK in samples taken two weeks ago from two patients who had not travelled to the country, nor come into contact with someone who had. The official confirmation of this discovery is pending the completion of the genome sequencing of the virus by researchers, something that is likely to be done by next week. At the same time, hospitals in regions such as Madrid and Andalusia are waiting for the results of genetic sequencing so that they can also confirm cases of this new strain that have no link to UK travel. The results in these cases are also not available yet. “There has been community transmission of the new variant for around two weeks now, but at levels that should be very low,” explains Fernando González Candelas, a genetics professor at the University of Valencia and a researcher at the Fisabio Foundation. “We have done a partial sequencing and have seen that the sample presents the same mutations as those detected in the United Kingdom,” he continues. “I have no doubt of it because it is not just one mutation, but rather many, although for now we need to complete the genome sequencing.” The new variant of the coronavirus has

more than 15 mutations, according to information from the UK. Of these, the most important ones affect the spike protein used by SARS-CoV-2 to infect cells. Sources in the UK say that this strain is as much as 70% more transmissible than the one that has been circulating since March, although this information will have to be confirmed by new research. The government of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has attributed the highly infectious nature of this new strain to the exponential rise in cases in the country, which led to a new national lockdown. Pere Godoy, the president of the Spanish Epidemiological Society, believes that “it is not possible to predict the behaviour of the new variant in other countries. This is a process that depends on a lot of factors, such as possible new changes in the virus itself, the rollout of vaccines, the number of people who have already had the infection, local dynamics… We have to monitor everything that happens from now on,” he adds. The Health Ministry and the regions – which are in charge of their own health systems in Spain – discussed the issue at a recent meeting about the progress of the pandemic. According to a spokesperson, the sequence of the virus is “being studied with the National Microbiology Centre and other centres to see if this strain is present in Spain.” The ministry adds that “it cannot be confirmed that there is community transmission” of the variant until the genetic sequencing of the samples is

completed. The research by Fisabio is the most advanced, but a chance discovery by British researchers is allowing hospitals to progress in detecting the strain thanks to the PCR tests from the company Thermo Fisher. These kits use three regions of the virus to detect its presence in samples. But one of these regions is where the new strain has mutated the most, meaning it is not detected by the PCR test. “This means that if the test comes back positive in this part, you can definitely rule out that the virus is the new strain,” explains Juan Carlos Galán, head virologist at Madrid’s Ramón y Cajal Hospital. “If the test, which is called Multiplex, is positive in the other two regions and negative in this one, it’s a significant indication that you’re dealing with the new strain,” he adds. Using this strategy at Ramón y Cajal, “from 700 positive cases, seven – 1% – have given us the profile of the new strain. But we have gone further and we have applied another technique from the same company called Singleplex, and the results have gone the same way. With the two tests, and ahead of the genetic

sampling confirming the results, this opens the path to identify the new strain nearly in real time without having to wait for the genetic sequencing,” Galán continues. Andalusia is another Spanish region where the new strain has already been detected, in part due to the presence of Gibraltar, the British Overseas Territory located off the southern coast of Spain. Two heads of service at major public hospitals have also confirmed that there have been “several cases with no epidemiological link to The Rock,” as Gibraltar is commonly known, “or to the

United Kingdom.”With the Thermo Fisher PCR tests, this “points to community transmission of the new strain.” All experts consulted believe that the arrival of the strain in Spain was inevitable given the steady stream of people moving between Spain and the United Kingdom, as well as the weeks that passed since the new variant began to circulate in the latter country to the time that restrictions were put on passengers arriving in Spain from that territory – currently limited to Spanish citizens and non-nationals with residency status.

Mediterranean diet tops the charts again The best diets in the world for 2021, as ranked by the US News and World Report, were announced this week and topping the charts for the fourth year in a row is the Mediterranean diet. In tied second place are the DASH diet (dietary approaches to stop hypertension) and the Flexitarian diet which encourages followers to be vegetarian most of the time but allows the odd animal based meal. The three top diets have one key element in common. They stress reducing or eliminating processed foods, and focus on meals full of fruits, vegetables,

beans, lentils, whole grains, nuts and seeds. The Dukin and keto diets, which stress eating high-protein or highfat foods with minimal carbohydrates, came in last and second last in the diet rankings. Those diets are typically rated poorly by experts because they are extremely restrictive, hard to follow, and eliminate entire food groups, which is not recommended by dietary guidelines. To judge the diets, a panel of experts in heart disease and diabetes, nutrition, diet, food psychology and obesity reviewed

research about the diets from medical journals, government reports and other resources. "We've convened a panel of 24 experts who live and breathe diet, weight loss and obesity," said Angela Haupt, managing editor of health at U.S. News & World Report. "They score each diet on a number of different measures: how easy it is to follow, how likely it is to lead to long-term weight loss, how healthful and safe it is, and how effective it is at preventing or managing chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease," she said.

Foods with misleading health halos On top of the classic new year’s resolution to get healthier in January, nutrition has become increasingly topof-mind as we fight against a pandemic wellness could very well be our best protection. However, health halos are lurking to throw you off course. Food marketing continues to get more buzzy and sophisticated; unfounded claims on social media go viral; and influencers earn more sway on the general populace than health professionals have. All of this makes it difficult to sort out the truth when it comes to trendy diets and claims of health benefits. We’re here to examine and shatter some of those health halos. Juice Cleanses At the top of the list of things that concern dieticians and nutritionists are juice cleanses, which earned a unanimous clamour of indignation from our consulted professionals. Our bodies need macronutrients to function normally ― that means protein, complex carbs, fats and fibre. However, going on a juice cleanse deprives your body of those important fortifying elements, since your goal is to restrict all actual food and consume only juices. When we restrict energy to this degree, our bodies go into energy preservation mode, prioritizing survival functions like heart pumping, breathing… but all the other functions go by the wayside. That’s why people feel so fatigued and weak when they do juice cleanses. Detox Teas Also unpopular among the experts are detox teas, which are having another ‘moment’ on social media, especially

among celebrity influencers. Just as juice cleanses claim to clean out your system, so do these teas, but the body is well equipped with organs that already work to detoxify our systems. No drink can replace what the body naturally does. Rather than detoxifying your bodies, experts claim these teas include ingredients that act as laxatives and diuretics, which expel water weight and solid waste. Many experience side effects such as diarrhoea and abdominal cramping. Fake Meat Another big money-maker backed by

great marketing is the fake meat industry, which is already appearing among mainstream fast food. Sure, the advantages of switching to plant-based protein are unmistakable when it comes to our planet’s wellness in terms of mitigating climate change, saving water and using less land. But for individual health? Not so much. Plant-based ‘meats’ often have as much saturated fat and sometimes even more sodium than a meat equivalent. While a great alternative for vegetarians and vegans, it’s not always healthier and can be considered a processed food. The level of processing is high and the list of ingredients is long. A lot of additives are required to enhance the meat-like qualities of alternatives. Açai Bowls Açai has been touted as a superfood with miraculous health benefits, bursting onto the wellness scene like a ripe, popped berry. However, what most folks don’t know is that most açai bowls have only small amounts of this valuable fruit. In fact, that photogenic deep purple base that you think is all superfruit is really just a puree of other fruits, thickeners and sometimes dairy alternatives for added creaminess, with just enough powdered berry or sometimes juice concentrate to give it

flour and sugar doesn’t make it any less a box of cookies. It could even have more calories, fat, sugar, sodium, carbs, and ingredients overall than the massmarket “regular” brands. This halo circles around gluten-free foods, too. Many people assume they are sensitive or allergic to gluten and will thus opt for gluten-free items. However, Gluten-free foods can be void of certain vitamins and minerals, and some glutenfree foods can have even higher sugar, fat, or sodium contents than the withgluten items! When removing gluten, you have to make up for this ingredient, which means adding things in, making a gluten-free diet no “diet” at all. that dramatic hue. It’s not often that it’s even frozen pure açai berry, which carries an even higher cost for an exotic fruit that already requires a lot of preparation and processing for shipment. Organic And Gluten-Free Labels Just because something is labelled “organic,” “natural” or “gluten-free” doesn’t make it the healthier choice by default. Organic foods are sometimes deemed healthier than their conventional counterparts, but that’s not necessarily the case. Just because a box of cookies is made from organic

Protein Finally, another craze that’s been alarming dieticians is going heavier than needed on protein. With keto, paleo and now the carnivore diets flourishing in a world growing more distrustful of carbs, protein has been crowned the new nutritional king. However, not all protein is created equal. Protein isn’t considered a nutrient of concern by many of us. For some time now, people have felt that more is more with this macronutrient, but eating excess protein ― like any macronutrient, can lead to weight gain without any additional benefits.

Tasty tongue twisters There are some food names that are just hard to wrap your tongue around. Whether they’re dishes or cocktails that many people get wrong, or ingredients that you rarely hear said out loud, it can be an edible minefield. Here are some of the most commonly mispronounced foods – and how we should be saying their names... Quinoa This South American grain has become a hugely popular superfood in the past decade or so – and it’s always been a victim of mispronunciation, especially when it was relatively new to many people. Rather than “keenoh-ah”, as the spelling suggests, it’s actually supposed to be a slow-spoken “keen-wah”. The name comes from Quechua, a language mostly spoken in the Andes. Pho The spelling of this infinitely slurp-able Vietnamese soup might suggest it’s spoken as “po” or “foe”, though the correct pronunciation is actually “fuh”. The fragrant soup is made with a deep, flavoursome broth to which rice noodles, herbs and meat are added, and is so synonymous with Vietnam it’s widely considered the country’s national dish. Acai The grape-like berries of the açaí palm have reached

superfood stardom in many countries and are packed with antioxidants. Their slight sweetness, balanced with a sharp tartness, means they’re also pretty delicious in a breakfast bowl or smoothie – though the name isn’t so easy to say. Despite its brevity, this Brazilian berry’s name has three syllables and is correctly pronounced “ah-sigh-ee”. Laphroaig Serious whisky fans tend to swoon at the sound of “Laphroaig”, the favoured Scotch for lovers of peaty single malts. Unless the name is said wrongly, perhaps. Anything with this many vowels is easy to get wrong. This whisky from the Scottish island of Islay (“eye-luh”) is pronounced “lah-froyg”, which is harder to remember than its distinctive, slightly salty taste. Bruschetta Bruschetta, an Italian dish of lightly toasted bread topped with garlic, perfectly ripe chopped tomatoes and a drizzle of olive oil, is summer encapsulated in one dish. But its name is as tricky as the dish is to share (cutting up topped toast rarely occurs without spillage). It’s commonly mispronounced with a “ch” sound, which should actually be a “k” – meaning its name is spoken as “broo-sket-tah”. Sriracha Occasionally

an

ingredient

becomes the next big thing despite lots of people having no clue how to say its name. Sriracha is a prime example. The spicy, tangy Thai sauce, made with red jalapeños, garlic, vinegar, sugar and salt, has achieved a cult-like status, with fans drizzling it on prawns, eggs, chips and pretty much everything else. Its name looks like a trip-hazard for your tongue, but it’s actually pretty simple: just drop the first “r” and pronounce it “see-ra-cha”. Caipirinha This is another of those cocktails that becomes increasingly hard to order the more you’ve had. Brazil’s national cocktail, the caipirinha is a zingy mix of cachaça – a spirit made from sugarcane, incidentally pronounced “ka-cha-sa” – muddled with sugar and lime and served with lots of ice. It’s pronounced “kai-puh-reen-ya” – but try saying that after a few sips. Chipotle Whether you’re referring to the chilli peppers or the popular fastfood chain that bears the same name, chipotle should be pronounced “chi-poat-lay” (as opposed to the commonly uttered “chi-pot-el”). The chillies are ripened jalapeños that have been smoked and dried, giving them a distinctive deep maroon hue and wrinkly skin. They bring a deep, rich, smoky flavour to many Mexican dishes.

Victoria Beckham told ‘diet is poisoning you' She’s always been incredibly strict when it comes to what she eats – sticking to a diet of mainly steamed fish and vegetables – but Victoria Beckham was horrified to be told that her supposedly healthy diet was actually harming her health. The star was forced to make changes after tests revealed she had “off the scale” levels of toxic mercury in her blood – the star was warned by medics that she was eating far too much swordfish and tuna, which can contain the highly poisonous methylmercury. “Victoria had off the scale levels of mercury. So, doctors gave her a liver flush to help rid the body of toxins,” an insider said, after Posh took the tests during a trip to a luxury health spa in Germany last year. "She feels brilliant and is as lean and fit as ever.” Now the designer – who has children Brooklyn, 21, Romeo,18, Cruz, 15, and nine-year-old Harper with husband David – has altered her diet to include more salmon after the wake-up call. “Vic would always she had the healthiest diet out of anyone she

knew so it was quite a surprise to hear it could be harming her,” an insider said. “To hear that you could be poisoning yourself is quite worrying and she had no idea the levels in mercury in those types of fishes. Taking good care

of herself is a priority to Vic so she took on all the advice and has made changes. But she didn’t want to relax her diet too much as she knows it’s what helps keep her slim and fit so she’s never going to be eating loads of pasta, meat and carbs for dinner. She still does what feels right for her.” Victoria, 46, has always been quite open about her diet and exercise regime and admits she’s

very strict and has to work hard to get her slim figure. She drinks apple cider vinegar each morning, before breakfast, which is normally a green smoothie or scrambled eggs with smoked salmon. Lunch is usually sushi and salad, while dinner is fish and steamed veg, even though David and the kids will have something different. But she is only human and still indulges by drinking red wine and tequila. “I am very, very disciplined in the way that I work out, in what I eat,” she said in an interview two years ago. “That’s how I’m happiest. I expect a lot from my body – I’m 44, I’ve got four kids, I work a lot, I travel. For me to do all that, I have to eat healthily and work out…. I was vegan for over a year, but I just felt like I didn't have the energy that you need." After giving birth to Brooklyn in 1999, Victoria lost a lot of weight and denied claims she was suffering from an eating disorder. And over the past few years she has really got into exercise, which has helped her figure get leaner and more toned.

Needy neighbour Since the virus restrictions started, my neighbour thinks it's ok to monopolise my time. She lives by herself and is in her 70s. In normal times she was active with hobbies and friends, but has been less so since the virus came because she is trying to avoid catching it. Both my husband and I work and we have three children, so we are pretty busy. We suffered financially in the first lockdown, so we are trying to do all the work we can. My neighbour seems to think we are here at her beck and call. She is perfectly fit but asks us to bring in shopping for her. To begin with we would help her out, but as we got more freedom and things returned to normal in May, we expected her to start fending for herself again. She is perfectly fit and doesn't have any mobility problems. Also it's not as though she is nervous about going out as she has been dining out a lot with her friends over the months. She waits until I've just come back from the shops to give me a list of groceries, and she also wants me to go to different stores, is fussy about the brands of foods she wants. I've told her how busy we are but she complains that we are not being good neighbours. In your shoes I would give her the telephone number of a carer as this seems to be what she wants. Explain that you were happy to help in the first lockdown because we were all off work, but now things are different and you simply do not have the time and you need to find paid work. You are not leaving her high and dry as you are finding her a replacement, so don’t feel guilty. WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. A PSEUDONYM WILL BE USED IF YOU WISH. SARA READS ALL LETTERS AND CAN GIVE A PERSONAL REPLY. EMAIL YOUR QUESTION TO SARA@COSTABLANCAPEOPLE.COM OR SARA IS AVAILABLE FOR PRIVATE CONSULTATIONS, TELEPHONE 650 054 467.

International Driving Permits As part of the new rules governing Brexit, holders of UK issued driving licences were expected to obtain an International Driving Permit for use in some European countries. These permits, obtained from the Post Office, were used to accompany the licence and were different depending on the country you planned to drive in. However, following an agreement between the United Kingdom and the 27 European Union countries, these permits are no longer required. The Secretary of State for Transport, Rt Hon Grant Shapps MP, took to Twitter to share the news, saying, “Welcome news for UK drivers. We've now secured agreement with all 27 EU Member States to recognise UK licences WITHOUT the need for an International Drivers Permit. From tomorrow, UK drivers can continue to drive in the EU without an IDP (once Covid restrictions lifted)”. Of course, if you are habitually resident in another country, such as Spain, the requirement to exchange your licence for a local equivalent is still active, the change in status refers to tourists or other visitors to the European countries.

Snow Stops Play for Elche CF Sunday's home match for Elche CF was postponed due to the extreme weather brought by Storm Filomena. The record breaking snowfall caused transport services to cease, resulting in Madrid based Getafe CF being unable to travel to the Martinez Valero. At the time of writing the match has been rescheduled for Monday 11th at 19:00, so the report will be published next week. However, there is always something interesting in the world of Football! Once again Elche CF legend Nino has been making new records. With last weeks match against Athletic Bilbao, the Almeria born striker became the first player in history to play 700 league games in Spain's La Liga. At the age of 40 and 207 days he has clocked up an impressive 129 games in the Primera and 571 in the Segunda, Less than a month ago he also broke another record, this time by becoming the oldest scorer in the Copa del Rey at the age of 40 years and 189 days. He has the opportunity to break his own record as Elche CF continue their Copa del Rey campaign. They will take on Real Vallecano in Round 32 at the Estadio de Vallecas in the south easterly suburbs of Madrid on Saturday the 16th January. Regular readers and all Elche CF fans will remember that last season Nino achieved the title of the most prolific Elche CF goal

scorer, when he overtook the previous record of 129 club goals. He is also the holder of the title for the most number of official matches played for Elche CF. The 'grandfather of goals' is now looking to become the oldest scorer in the Primera. A record which has been held by the Brazilian born ex footballer Donato since 2002, when he was playing for Deportivo de La Coruña. Elche CF will play 4 matches in the next 2 weeks! The postponed

fixture against Getafe on Monday 11th, the 32nd round of the Copa del Rey against Real Vallecano on Saturday 16th, then against Valladolid on Tuesday the 19th at 19:00 and finally they will face Barcelona on Sunday 24th at 16:15. As soon as spectators are allowed back into the stadiums, EuroTourGuide will once again be offering Coach Tours with Match Tickets to support Elche CF. TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Ah, the FA Cup 3rd Round. One of the few romantic moments left in global football, when massive underdogs get to take on their Goliaths and get their moment of fame. And, of course, this season’s round had the added jeopardy of a virus rendering entire first-team squads unpickable meaning that opportunities were there to be taken. I don’t think it is too wrong of me to have wished Joe Hart had made even more of a hash of that long-distance effort from Marine. The ball smashed against the Spurs crossbar as the 8th tier club edged towards 20 minutes without conceding. Sadly, they didn’t get past the 22nd. Carlos Vinicius showed his Premier League class completely miskicking his first effort and getting lucky that there was still a second bite of the cherry on offer the goal probably didn’t warrant the celebration, in fairness.

(remember the name, certainly in context to Jamie Vardy) equalised you could sense that they believed ever-so-briefly that they could beat that champions.

Unfortunately for Marine, it looked like Ian Wright’s tactical tips expired after half an hour as Tottenham went on to turn the screw. Tottenham paid Marine the appropriate amount of

Naturally, what actually happened was that Liverpool realised FA Cup egg on their face would not be the greatest look so they sorted themselves out and won 4-1.

respect by bringing Gareth Bale off the bench and only scoring five - the perfect number to show the job was done professionally, but without killing the spirit of a team who will never get to do that again in their lives.

Leeds put a semi-decent side out away to Crawley Town and Marcelo Bielsa probably wished he’d gone a bit bigger given that their League Two opponents stuck three past them without reply in the second half. Still, it means Bielsa can focus on winning and losing Premier League matches 3-2 for the rest of the season.

Aston Villa might well have regretted sticking five past Liverpool’s kids (albeit for entirely different reasons) last season as King Klopp named a super-strong XI to take on Villa’s U23 squad. Credit to Villa’s kids, when Louis Barry

If only Crawley had some kind of token reality TV star in their ranks, they could really cash in on the exposure of this cup run.

Neither Manchester clubs had an issue seeing off their challengers United beat Watford 1-0 thanks to another early Scott McTominay strike and City also dealt in midfielders only finding the net with Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden seeing them past Birmingham. The FA Cup can be a good opportunity for completely out of

form teams, yes I am looking at you Sheffield United and West Bromwich Albion, to pick off a lower-league foe and remember what it feels like to win a match. However, Big Sam and Little Sam are still yearning that glow of victory having managed to lose to Blackpool on penalties. Sheffield United not only managed to score three but succeeded in only conceding two as they edged past Bristol Rovers. Some felt Stoke might cause Leicester City a few problems and they

could not have been more wrong - the Foxes saw off Michael O’Neill’s men 40 without really breaking sweat. Chelsea went into their match with Morecombe thinking that if Timo Werner and Kai Haverz can’t do it against a League Two side then they might have made a mistake in paying multi-millions for them. Fortunately for Lampard, and the two players, they

both got on the scoresheet in a 4-0 victory. Newcastle put up a good fight against Arsenal and if Andy Carroll had headed his chance from three yards rather than side-footed it he might well have scored the goal that put them through. As it was, Carroll missed and Emile Smith-Rowe scored the all-important extra-time goal to break the Magpie resistance. No comment this week from Mesut Ozil, though - probably tying up his move to Turkey.
