Field Hospital receives first covid patients As the Alicante province registers 3346 new infections in just 48 hours, the provincial field hospital is admitting its first patients. The field hospital, located in the grounds of Alicante General Hospital, has been equipped with 80 beds to cope with the surge in numbers across the

province. The field hospital can be extended to cope with 242 patients if necessary. The Alicante field hospital, like its counterparts in CastellĂłn and Valencia, will treat patients over 18 who are positive for covid (confirmed by PCR), and

who have previously been admitted to an acute hospital. In accordance with the protocol of the Ministry of Justice and Public Administrations, spaces have been enabled in the facility for migrants who require isolation due to having been close contacts of infected people. To deal with recent low temperatures, Public Health also revealed that the air conditioning systems have been reinforced so that the temporary hospital maintains an optimal temperature at all times, both for patients and health workers. The Ministry of Health on Sunday revealed 1,110 new coronavirus infections (confirmed by PCR test or antigen test) in the province of Alicante. The previous day (Saturday) figures were almost double with 2,236 cases in the Alicante province. Experts speculate that Sunday’s decrease in numbers could be

due to the lower number of tests administered over the weekend, especially given that tests administered on Friday would often be confirmed on Saturday.

Keeping Orihuela Costa clean and green will cost 2m euros a year The Orihuela City Council plans to award a new contract for the conservation of green areas in Orihuela Costa in the middle of this year at a cost of almost 2.2 million euros per year – double the current cost. This will ensure that the parks and gardens provision would be legally protected under a contract that which has been lacking since February 2017. The contract would cover one hundred percent of the green areas of the coast. Complaints about the neglect and lack of maintenance of these public spaces have been documented in neighbourhood complaints in Orihuela Costa – which has a population of nearly 30,000 - for decades. The current service, managed by Actúa, began in March, 2011 and ended its last annual extension in February 2017. Despite the administratively illegal situation, the City Council pays them because the company continues to provide a service. The monthly expense amounts to about

75,000 euros for an annual total of about 900,000 euros (VAT included). During the previous term, the City Council hired the preparation of an external technical report that would draw up the specifications for the new contract. The report indicates that if it wants to cover one hundred percent of all green areas, the municipality must assume an annual cost of 2,181,000 euros (VAT included) to cover 115 hectares or 1,150,000 m2 of green areas with a staff of around 41 people. This also includes the maintenance of all hedge and tree lined areas on sidewalks and party walls between roads of different directions, traffic roundabouts, slopes, and all kinds of municipal road islets. The current service only covers 35 percent of the surface of public green areas in Orihuela Costa and does not include spaces that have not been ‘received’ by the City Council, whereas the new contract will include all green spaces.

Second vaccine doses Cases being rolled out locally increase locally The Department of Universal Health and Public Health began on Sunday to administer the second dose of the Pfizer vaccine. The residents and social health personnel of the Verge del Miracle Residence in Rafelbunyol, Valencia, were among the first to receive the first dose and this Sunday they will be vaccinated with the second. According to the forecasts of the pharmaceutical company, within a period of 10 days, those who were vaccinated on Sunday will acquire immunity against COVID-19. The efficacy level of this vaccine is 95 percent. Over the next few days, the 5,151 second doses will be supplied to complete the first vaccination cycle for the people with whom the process began on 27th December. The forecast is to receive 17,550 vaccines yesterday (Monday 18th), 58 percent of the usual ones due to the incidence reported by Pfizer. By Monday 25th, according to the forecasts of the ministry, 30,255 doses

Five years for stabbing classmate in Torrevieja A teenager has been sentenced to five years in prison for attacking a fellow student with a 27 centimetre blade at a secondary school in Torrevieja. The attack took place in October 2019 when a then 18 year old student of Pakistani origin, resident in Spain since childhood, attempted to stab another boy who ‘blasphemed’ against the prophet Muhammad. At the court case, which took place last week in Elche, the defendant pleaded guilty having reached an agreement with the Public Prosecutor’s Office. Prosecutors had initially demanded a longer sentence – eight years for a crime of attempted murder or 12 years for an ‘aggravated’ crime seeing as the motive was "racist, antiSemitic or other kind of discrimination related to ideology, religion or beliefs of the victim." The five year sentence will be accompanied by a nine year restraining order as well as a compensation payment of €11,000 to be paid to the victim. The incident took place early in the morning, on October 29, 2019, at Torrevieja institute number 5, known as Torrevigia. With ten minutes to go before

an English class drew to a close, the defendant, who was 18 years old at the time, approached a 17-year-old classmate from behind with the intention of killing him "for blasphemy." He attacked him with large ham knife that he had kept hidden in his schoolbag.

will already be received, and in a few weeks the 12,705 doses that were not received will be replaced - a setback that has forced to temporarily modify the vaccination plan to guarantee that all those people vaccinated in the first dose will receive the second on time. Carmen Gómez was the first to receive the second dose of the Pfizer vaccine in the Valencian Community. All the residents of the Verge del Miracle center in Rafelbunyol "are excited" and all those who received the first dose want to receive the second, said nurse Cristina Palacios, who was in charge of Sunday’s vaccination programme. At the moment, 86,927 doses of the Pfizer vaccine have been administered in the Valencian Community of the first dose in residential care homes and among health personnel, 92.1 percent of all those received so far. By provinces, 11,653 have been administered in Castellón, 32,472 in Alicante and 42,802 in Valencia.

Saturday, a day when 2,236 new cases were confirmed across the Province of Alicante, Almoradi added a new outbreak of nine cases social origin. This came hot on the heels of Rojales Mayor Antonio Perez calling for his local residents to act responsibly after cases doubled in a week to 46 positives. Los Montesinos and San Miguel have also seen a marked increase as has Orihuela Costa.

Outbreak at Torrevieja nursing home

Puig guarantees healthcare provision but asks for maximum caution

An outbreak of covid at a Torrevieja nursing home has resulted in all the residents as well as some of the staff testing positive for coronavirus. Forty-two residents of the Mar Bella nursing home in Torrevieja, in addition to staff and the director of the facility, have tested positive following a PCR test for covid. The residents and staff of the home received their first dose of the covid vaccine on January 4. The first cases at the home began to appear seven days later, on Monday the 11th. Public Health and the department of Torrevieja had planned to supply the second dose this week on Monday the 18th. The vaccine generates antibodies against the disease around the 10th day. Most of the infections are asymptomatic at the moment although five residents have been admitted to University Hospital Torrevieja. The management of the home, which had been covid free during the first and second wave, describes the outbreak as "incomprehensible" although they prefer not to question the efficacy of the vaccine. This is not the first time that the virus has hit a nursing home during the vaccination process. Virgen de las Nieves in Pilar de la Horadada and a mental health facility in Redován were impacted when outbreaks were detected just days before the first doses were due to be administered.

Amid spiralling figures in the Valencian Community, the head of the regional government Ximo Puig has confirmed that there will be more restrictive measures if necessary, although he indicated that a home confinement is the decision of central government and for now he "does not contemplate it". President of the Generalitat Valenciana, Ximo Puig, said at the weekend that healthcare in the Valencian Community is guaranteed, both for coronavirus patients and for patients with other diseases that cannot wait for treatment, despite the high level of occupation that hospitals are experiencing right now. However, he called on all citizens to take every precaution possible to try to stop the spread of the virus, given the current worrying situation. Puig addressed the population in an official message to the public, in which he admitted "a situation of hospital stress", with 70% of beds occupied, but still wanted to "send a message of calm", since there are 931 beds in auxiliary field hospitals and other repurposed healthcare spaces. Almost a thousand additional places, he said, "doubles" the regular hospital capacity. The head of the regional government stressed that "very hard days are coming", but praised the "immense work of doctors, nurses, Public Health workers and the entire health community" to deal with the situation. At the same time, he emphasized the

Did you know the International Residents Office has moved? Torrevieja’s Office for International Residents has moved to the secondary town hall in La Mata – great news for anyone who struggles with parking in Torrevieja town centre. The Pangea office will still operate at its existing location for those who wish to be attended in Torrevieja, but the new offices at the state of the art town hall in La Mata are easy to access and delightfully modern.

Appointments for the many functions of the International Residents office can be made online at https://torrevieja.sedelectronica.es/cita previa.1 with slots available most weekdays from 9am to 1pm. Councillor for Foreign Residents, Gitte Lund Thomsen, and her team can help you with padrón issues, residencia renewal, learning Spanish and much more.

need for everyone to take all preventive actions that are within their power, and outlined ten actions for “personal selfprotection against the virus.” Among these ten actions is that of "isolating oneself when noticing any symptoms without waiting for a confirmation test", as well as avoiding as far as possible direct contact with anyone outside your usual contacts. If encounters with others are unavoidable, the recommendation is that they take place outdoors. Puig also stressed that just because an activity is legally permitted "does not mean that it does not entail risk", so he appealed for "extreme common sense and precaution." However, with regard to home confinement, he said that the Valencian Community "is already in a situation of semi-confinement" and that, this region "imposed the most social restrictions at Christmas" which have now been tightened even more. This was done to reduce the risk of contagion, "without completely paralyzing society and without causing the physical and mental health problems associated with prolonged confinement at home." Home confinement, said Puig is an "extreme" measure that, "could only be decreed by the Spanish Government and which is currently ruled out." However, he said "if necessary, the Generalitat will adopt even more restrictive measures in the area of our competence."

A challenging year for Reach Out 2020 was a challenging year for charities across the world and at Reach Out the situation was no different. The pandemic almost forced the charity to close its doors, which would have meant no services for the area’s homeless people. This week, charity president David Young looked back over the year that was almost catastrophic for Reach Out and had some very special messages of thanks. “Reach Out Extienda La Mano would like to take this opportunity to offer our sincere gratitude to ALL those individuals, clubs and associations who have generously supported our work here in Torrevieja over the last year. When

we were near closure in July/August the generosity was amazing, and our successful bid for food help was a turning point with the donation from The Church of Latter Day Saints (The Mormons), which has guaranteed our food for the next 9 months. As our operating bills still had to be paid, and the shops being closed for 3-4 months, the contingency fund which we had built up over the last 9 years was depleted. To further reduce our outgoings, the decision, after long consultation, to close Shop 2 in Calle Dona Sinforosa was not taken lightly. Our gratitude extends to the landlords who have helped us as best they could until it was

inevitable. Our Volunteers are also thanked for their unstinting work and time to meet our Mission Statement, without whose commitment would have caused Reach Out to close. We look forward to 2021 bringing some sort of normality in our situation, and continuing the work helping the homeless and needy families in Torrevieja. We still need volunteers and appreciate any time given in pursuit of our Mission Statement.” Please contact our office on 965713063 or email info@reachouttorrevieja.eu with any type of donations or to offer your time to volunteer.

Eurostar in danger Confinement of collapse breaches revealed The Eurostar, the train service that runs via the Channel Tunnel linking France with the UK, is in "a very critical" state after a collapse in travel between Britain and the European continent, a top French rail executive has warned. Eurostar has been severely impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, with its special platforms and facilities in Paris, London and Brussels now devoid of people. Currently, there is just one service a day between Paris and London, whereas prior to covid, the company was running two trains an hour during peak times. "I'm very worried about Eurostar," Christophe Fanichet, a senior executive from France's state SNCF railways, which is the majority shareholder of Eurostar, told reporters. "The company is in a critical state, I'd even say very critical," added Fanichet. Fanichet revealed that Eurostar's passenger numbers were down by as much as 85 percent in 2020 from the year earlier and that the group is now in need of extra cash to prevent it from collapsing. Meanwhile, travel restrictions are becoming tighter, with France announcing on Thursday that arrivals from Britain will need to observe a sevenday quarantine and undertake a PCR test at the end. Britain already has a quarantine system in place. Fanichet said the problem for the

London-based group was that it was seen as French by the British government and as British by the French, meaning it had been difficult to secure bail-out cash. "Given the passenger numbers, it's a group that has been hit more than airlines," he said. The company was negotiating a government loan in Britain and could potentially be further recapitalised via its shareholders. In November, Eurostar chief executive Jacques Damas wrote that there was a "risk that this iconic service will be left to fail, threatening jobs, connectivity and reversing the progress to reduce travel emissions." Writing for the Independent newspaper, Damas said that 200 million euros had been already secured from its shareholders, but he called for more help from the British government. The group is 55 percent owned by the SNCF, 30 percent by Canadian institutional fund manager Caisse de depot et placement du Quebec (CDPQ), 10 percent by Britain-based fund Hermes Infrastructure, and five percent by the Belgian railway SNCB. Eurostar had been gradually expanding its services, with new lines opened up from London to Amsterdam, the Alps, the south of France and other destinations in recent years in addition to the regular lines between Paris and Brussels.

Public Health officials have revealed details of several cases of people caught breaching their confinement. Currently, the requirement is that from the moment you are deemed a close contact of a positive case, you must self isolate for ten days unless health officials deem it necessary that you are tested in which case, a positive or negative result dictates the protocol from there. In the town of Benetússer in the north of the Valencian Community, residents are under confinement due to the high incidence of cases there. Mayor of the town Eva Sanz, took to Facebook to communicate some serious breaches of protocol and to urge residents to stay at home. "We are paying dearly for the excess of mobility and social contact," said Sanz. Among other breaches, Public Health revealed cases of people who had gone for a coffee in a bar after having a PCR test, unaware whether or not the result was positive and thus putting customers and staff at risk. In one case, a young woman was telephoned by health workers to tell her she had tested positive. At the time of the call she was found to be in the supermarket with her mother – both women should have been in isolation. Another case involved a pair of brothers who mixed with cousins and

grandparents on Three Kings day, as well as meeting up with classmates despite recommendations to limit social contact. This latest pair prompted the tracking and isolation of more than 50 people. Sanz revealed that in another example, the police had to be called in to locate a woman whom health workers had been trying to find for five days. Police found the woman at work and living a “normal life”, despite her positive diagnosis for coronavirus. Mayor Sanz said that she wanted to highlight these “delusional and irresponsible anecdotes” to raise awareness of a problem “that is getting out of hand” due to attitudes that she considers are not “responsible” and that are causing the "collapse of the system." Sanz revealed that the town has had to ask for support to monitor the entrances and exits of the border confinement since officials observed citizens continually breaching the confinement such as those “who insist on making discount purchases outside the town or going to see the snow.”

New investment of €780,000 for food banks in Torrevieja

Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, visiting one of the food banks in May 2020

The town hall of Torrevieja has approved a further investment of €780,000 for food parcels for families in need in the town. Back in May 2020, emergency contracts were drawn up to allow the purchase of essential food and hygiene items for the town’s most vulnerable families. The first investment of €764,790 saw direct aid being offered to people at risk of social exclusion. The latest approval of a further investment of €780,192 brings the total investment in helping the town’s poorest citizens to €1,544,982. Councillor for NGOs and Volunteering, Concha Sala explained that the contract for providing food parcels will run until the end of the State of Alarm in Spain, that is, until May 9th 2021, or until any extensions to that date are determined. Currently, the town’s three main food banks are able to distribute, according to weekly demand, up to a maximum of 1,000 food parcels every two weeks (feeding approximately 3,000 people), estimating a maximum of 12,000 parcels to be delivered throughout the duration of this new emergency contract. Councillor Sala explained that the food parcels include non-perishable food, fresh products, personal hygiene and cleaning items, fruits and vegetables and bakery products. The distribution and delivery of the parcels is managed with the collaboration of volunteers from Alimentos Solidarios Torrevieja, the local branch of the Cruz Roja and Cáritas de la Parroquia de San Pedro y San Pablo. The town hall, the food banks and charities, and the social welfare department specifically, are constantly evaluating the situation of a number of families that due to their employment status and other factors do not receive any other financial aid. Finally, Councillor Sala highlighted the economic effort being made by Torrevieja City Council, as well as the great work being carried out by both the technicians and workers of the Department of Social Welfare and the volunteers of Cruz Roja, Cáritas and Alimentos Solidarios.

Repairs underway at La Glea promenade

Councillors watch as repairs begin

Preliminary preparations have begun in order to start the works on the Paseo de La Glea, Dehesa de Campoamor, Orihuela Costa. The Councillor for Infrastructures Ángel Noguera, together with the director of the project, municipal technicians were all on site to see the repairs underway. Councillor Noguera said: “Due to the enormous amount of repair work caused by the damage wreaked by the DANA across the municipality of Orihuela, the subsequent stoppage of activity due to COVID-19 and the beginning of the summer season, these repair works could not be started earlier. We understand the annoyance and frustration that the delay may have been caused to local residents and visitors, but finally the time has come to fix the

promenade so that it once again looks good, as it deserves to.” The Councillor explained that “from my department, we always try to start the works within the established deadlines, but sometimes difficulties arise that cause the established times to be altered as has happened with this work”. For him as the head of the Department of Infrastructure, the important thing is that Orihuela carries out the planned actions and investments quickly now they are underway. The damage caused as a result of the DANA in September 2019 consists of a total of three section where the promenade was completely undermined by the flood water between Rambla del Nacimiento and Calle Rubén Darío. This mainly affected the

pedestrian area of the seafront walkway, as well as the urban infrastructures of public street lighting and the supply of drinking water. The planned works include the following actions: a decorative wall of blocks to give continuity to the existing ones, filling the existing tunnels and re-paving the promenade, the sidewalks and the road - both in the damaged part and on the remaining sections, the replacement of drinking water and public lighting, horizontal and vertical signage and new street furniture and lights. Finally, Ángel Noguera indicated that "the contract has been awarded for an amount of €72,003.28 and with an execution period for the completion of the works of just one month."

Pilar Police save baby’s life The Local Police in Pilar de la Horadada have saved a baby of less than one year old from choking to death. The police headquarters received notification through a 112 emergency call to report that a minor needed emergency help. The caller said that the child "had purple skin and apparently was not breathing because it was choking." According to reports posted on the social network pages of the Policia Local, officers on shift dashed to the home and "while they were waiting for the ambulance they had requested, they began the emergency resuscitation procedure." They placed the baby face down on the knee of one of the officers and "began to gently tap her on the back, at the same time pressing on her stomach." "After a few agonising minutes," says the statement from the Local Police, "they managed to make the minor respond. She moved her arms and legs slowly." It was then that the emergency health services arrived at the scene and took control of the situation. According to the lead officer "this type of intervention makes us feel proud of our work and reminds us of the vocation of service for which we decided to be policemen."

Pop stars call for visafree touring A petition calling for Europe-wide visafree travel permits for touring professionals and artists has received more than 222,000 signatures. The UK officially left the European Union on 31st January last year. The EU trade agreement deal finalised on 24th December allows several specific occupations to enter the EU for short-term visits without a visa, but this does not include artists and musicians. If touring Europe, musicians may be required to secure a visa for each country they perform in and apply for temporary “passports for goods”, known as carnets, if transporting gear. This will be costly and require excessive paperwork, making touring harder to afford for both musicians and touring entourage such as sound engineers. It is expected that this will be challenged by lawyers. The petition, which was started by Tim Brennan, states: “We would like the UK Govt to negotiate a free cultural work permit that gives us visa free travel throughout the 27 EU states for music touring professionals, bands, musicians, artists, TV and sports celebrities that tour the EU to perform shows and events & Carnet exception for touring equipment. “The UK has a huge music / event touring industry which has suffered immensely due to Covid. After the end of the transition period, we face further hardship when trying to tour the EU on a professional basis, with potentially each country asking for its own visa, that would

be valid only for one trip. As a freelancer I and many like me travel through the EU countless times a year on different tours and events, this will become impossible due to cost and time if we do not have visa free travel.” The UK government must now respond to the petition and parliament must consider it for a debate, as is a requirement of any petition that receives more than 100,000 signatures. A number of artists, labels, venues and music organisations have shared the petition, including Dua Lipa object blue, Josey Rebelle, NTS, Hyperdub and Rye Wax. Muscians including One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson and former Boyzone star Ronan Keating have also encouraged their fans to support the campaign. Cabinet Officer Lord True recently said that talks with Brussels over visa-free travel for artists were ‘unlikely’ to restart in the near future.

Most times you’ll hear people say, you should keep your property for at least 5 years before selling it, especially if you want to recoup the legal costs too. However, there are times when this rule is just a myth and should be ignored. 1. You purchased it much below market value. If you bought a “bargain,” and the market is hot, selling up sooner rather than later is absolutely the right thing to do. You purchased it low knowing you’d make a tidy profit, so there’s no point in waiting for 5 years. If you can make money on it now, do it! 2. The area has gone down. Buying in an area that is going downhill will ultimately have a negative effect, on your home’s value. Selling as soon as possible would be the ideal scenario, to try to salvage as much of your home’s equity as possible. Sometimes it’s better to cut your losses and get out while you can. 3. You hate living there. Money isn’t everything, and if you just really hate living there, then you most definitely should sell.

SE VENDE There is no legal limit on how long you have to keep a property after buying it. You could purchase on a Monday and sell it on Tuesday! The decision of how long to own a home is entirely up to you. However! Bear this in mind… Even if you are a retired Resident and you’re selling at a profit, be prepared to pay Capital Gains Tax. Gas explosion in San Fulgencio A 70-year-old man has suffered serious injuries in an explosion caused by a gas leak in San Fulgencio. The blast caused by the butane in a stove caused a fire and serious damage to two houses in the Marina del Mar urbanization, Urb La Marina. The man suffered severe burns to more than 50% of his body after the explosion which occurred at around 10pm on Thursday night. Fire crews from Almoradí and Orihuela attended the scene as well as two ambulances. The exact cause of the blast is investigated but initial speculation from the fire department points to a butane cylinder fuelled gas heater, typical of many Costa Blanca

homes in winter. The man was rushed to hospital and is now being treated at the burns unit of Hospital La Fe de Valéncia. A 75year-old woman was brought to

Torrevieja hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. The explosion caused considerable damage to the man’s house and the neighbouring house.

San Fulgencio town hall buys PPE and cleaning products San Fulgencio town hall has spent just over €10,000 on health and cleaning supplies in the latest battle with Covid-19. The town hall recently announced the acquisition of a large quantity of sanitary material as well as cleaning and disinfection products, which aim to "keep the municipal buildings and schools that depend on the town hall stocked", as explained Councilor for Health, David Vives.

The total cost of purchasing these products amounts to €10,905. Vives said that with this investment, the town hall, rather than waiting for regional health “has acted to provide itself with the necessary material with a long-term forecast, in the event that there may be a worsening of the situation related to the pandemic of the Covid-19.” The shopping list includes over

770 litres of hydro-alcoholic gel for hand disinfection, which will go to the dispensers around the various municipal offices; in addition to 1,000 individual protection FFP2 masks for workers. The list also includes disposable gowns, 600 litres of surface cleaning and disinfection products, as well as paper towel dispensers for drying hands hygienically.

Demand for second ERTE extended homes in Spain soars until end of May The number of Britons seeking a second home in Spain soared in the first week of January as more families cast their sights to the European country amid the lockdown, property experts said. The real estate company Taylor Wimpey Espana found that interest in Spanish properties rose by 39 percent during the first week of 2021 when compared to the first week the year before despite post-Brexit travel restrictions. They also reported a surge in would-be UK buyers using their virtual tours to view dream properties in areas including Alicante and the Costa Blanca in general. It comes after travel restrictions, which came into force on 1st January, stated that Britons would be prevented from spending more than three months at a time at a holiday home in the EU after Brexit. The restrictions mean that Britons will only be allowed to stay in a European country without a visa for a maximum of 90 days in every six month period. People who exceed the 90 day limit could face the threat of a fine or even be banned entry to the EU's Schengen travel zone. Despite the extra hurdles involved after Brexit, Taylor Wimpey Espana also reported that interest from other European countries was also on the rise, with web visitors from Germany up 51 percent and those from Belgium up by 44 percent. Domestic visitors have increased

too, with website visits from Spain up 15 percent on the year before. Marc Pritchard, sales and marketing director for Taylor Wimpey Espana, said: 'Unfortunately, both the UK and Germany are in lockdown right now, while Spain, France and a whole host of other countries have extensive restrictions in place. But that doesn't mean that would-be buyers aren't dreaming of owning a home in the sunshine. The appeal of Spain's golf courses and expansive beaches is only emphasised by stay-athome orders. 'Families are itching to return to normality with a new found zeal for travel and leisure time.' Among the properties currently available with Taylor Wimpey is a private three-bedroom development in Alicante, south east Spain, which is currently priced at £169,846.35 (€191,000). The property features a fully-fitted kitchen, a garden, private parking, gas central heating and sits just a stone's throw away from the Alenda Golf Course. Also on sale are new apartments in Punta Prima, Torrevieja, Costa Blanca, which are on sale from £160,064.62 (€180,000) onwards. It said the mixture of affordability and sunshine that the Costa Blanca delivers has long been a favourite with British buyers. Mr Pritchard said: 'We are delighted that interest in Spanish second homes has

grown considerably in the past year, despite the many challenges that the pandemic has delivered. 'Being able to travel freely and enjoy unrestricted second home ownership is going to feel so incredibly welcome after the events of 2020.' There are an estimated 500,000 Britons who currently own a holiday home somewhere in Europe. However anyone who now wants to stay in an EU country for longer than three months will likely have to apply for a visa. Campaigners are calling for the rules to be changed to allow people to use their 90 day allocations continuously. This would allow them to spend six months in a row at their holiday home so they could take full advantage of the Spring and Summer months. In November, David Young, who set up the campaign group 180 Days in Greece to fight the new rules, called for parity. He said: 'Like me, many Brits divide their lives between two countries, but after Brexit – unless they apply for full residency in the EU country where they've bought their property, pay taxes there, and lose their NHS provision back home – second-home owners will be limited to stays of a maximum of 90 days.' He added: 'Citizens from the EU, EEA and Switzerland who want to stay in the UK for up to six months will not require a visa post-Brexit. All we are asking for is parity.'

Spain's employment minister, Yolanda Díaz, said on Wednesday that the latest extension to the ERTE furlough scheme will maintain the current protection for businesses and employees and involve some changes in order to streamline its administration. Díaz explained that there will be no alteration to the "ultra-protected" sectors, including those most recently incorporated within the framework of the plan for hospitality and retail, e.g. drinks' wholesalers; botanical gardens, zoos and nature reserves; and gambling businesses. She added that companies will still have to commit to maintaining employment for six months if they take advantage of ERTE. A ban on dismissal, dividend distribution and overtime working will continue. ERTE, Díaz stressed, is supported by public funds. In return for workers having to "sacrifice" 30 percent of salaries, employers have to maintain employment. Moreover, she said, "it would not make sense" to dismiss

employees after 14,000 million euros have been spent on preserving 550,000 businesses and 3.4 million workers at the most serious moment of the crisis. The minister highlighted the fact that employees will continue to receive benefit equivalent to 70 percent of their base and that protection for employees with 'fijo discontinuo' contracts will continue. She was optimistic that final agreement on the extension will be reached with employers' organisations and unions on Friday. The extension is expected to be to 31st May. In Spain, there are currently 756,000 employees on ERTE terms. These represent 79 percent fewer than the maximum number in spring last year. The percentage of reinstated workers in Spain is the second highest in European countries where the furlough mechanism operates; in the Netherlands it is 85.7 percent. Spain is therefore above Germany (72.1 percent), France (65.5 percent) and Italy (56.4 percent).

Spanish researcher develops 'potentially lifelong' Covid vaccine A Spanish scientist is working on a Covid-19 vaccine that could offer immunity for many years or even for life, in the same way as the Yellow Fever, Hepatitis and tetanus jabs do. In fact, Lorena Sánchez Felipe's research is based upon the Yellow Fever vaccine, which only has to be given once in a lifetime. She and her team at Lovaina University's Rega Institute in Belgium are also working on more and more effective treatments for those who catch the SARS-CoV-2 virus, and other, similar strains. The state-of-the-art laboratory where Dr Sánchez Felipe and Institute boss Johan Neyts have been 'searching for a needle in a haystack', as they both describe it, has been practically their main home for months as they painstakingly analysed 1.7 million substances to work out which ones could help reduce the proliferation of the deadly strain of the Coronavirus that has almost shut the world down over the past year. “I've been working here for four years, in the vaccines group – my main rôle is designing, and

discovering new vaccines. I deal with the whole molecular biology part linked to them,” says Lorena, a graduate in biology and biochemistry from Salamanca University who obtained her PhD from New York's Albany Medical Center, researching the Hepatitis C virus over three-and-a-half years. “From the moment we started working on a Coronavirus inoculation, I quickly made the designs based upon our existing knowledge of other vaccines, in particular, the one for Yellow Fever. We've made an incredible effort. We've brought together several teams working on the different parts that were needed to create the vaccine in as fast a time a possible. We've all been working practically day and night, Monday to Sunday, since we started,” Dr Sánchez Felipe reveals. “Even though you're always motivated in a normal situation, with the devastating effects of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, that motivation is even greater when you realise you may be able to produce something that could stop all this.”

The Rega Institute is confident its long-term, or even lifelong, vaccine will be authorised for use in the year 2022 – so far, they have tested it on hamsters and obtained very pleasing results; the next stage is clinical trials, where it will be tested on humans. It uses the genetic code of the virus present in the Yellow Fever vaccine as a 'vector', or carrier, of the protein in the 'spine' of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, so that the immune system responds in a similar way, offering 'efficient protection' against both conditions at the same time – this will mean, effectively, that anyone who has the Rega Institute jab will have been inoculated against the deadly tropical disease and will be able to travel to countries where it is present; also, it could be given out to third-world communities in these countries, with the double benefit. Clinical trials are not likely to happen before autumn 2021, which Dr Neyts admits 'might sound a bit late in the day' compared with the Pfizer and Moderna jabs.

New Year – New Opportunities As 2020 proved, anything can happen, in the investment world and beyond. With the pandemic still sadly going strong, markets could be just as volatile and full of surprises - good and bad - this year too. While some areas like technology did well in 2020, others did not. For example, trading in physical property funds was suspended and Brazil was one of only two countries - Russia being the second that managed to underperform the much unloved UK market, dragging the rest of Latin America down with it. Trying to predict the future is for some

people the very essence of investing.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP It was an unusually – and surprisingly – successful week for sterling, continuing its fine start to 2021. On three days the pound was in either first or equal first place among the major currencies, with six days of unchallenged gains seeing it soar to a seven week high against the euro. GBP/USD also reached a level not seen since April 2018. Better-thanexpected GDP data for November was a good sign for the UK, helping to reflect that November’s lockdown had not been as economically damaging as anticipated. Disappointing falls in manufacturing and industrial production were offset by the GDP news, much to sterling’s benefit. Investors are still holding onto their relief of avoiding a no deal Brexit thanks to the last-minute trade deal agreed between the UK and EU on Christmas Eve. Red tape friction obstructing trade with Europe that has come in since Brexit, but MPC member Silvana Tenreyro’s call for negative interest rates were not helpful though. Neither was the PM’s words that hinted at a further tightening of Covid restrictions, contributing that, “We’re going to keep the rules under constant review. Where we have to tighten them, we will.” Chancellor Rishi Sunak also said that, “the economy is going to get worse before it gets better.” On any logical basis, the pound ought to have had a bad day after that, but luckily the positives outweighed the negatives. The Bank of England also helped, with Andrew Bailey distancing the BoE from the expectation of negative interest rates, with him arguing that, “there are lots of issues”, that make them undesirable. UK vaccination efforts have also ramped up, and Covid-19 cases have dropped. In terms of jabs per capita the UK is ahead of Europe

and the United States. EURO It has been a week for investors to reassess their views on financial markets, often more than once. Possibilities such as negative UK interest rates, rising inflation, fiscal stimulus and an oversupply of government bonds have sent investors in conceptual circles, and the EU was no exception. On monetary policy, the word from the European Central Bank was steady ahead. The account of the ECB Governing Council’s policy meeting in early December reiterated “the need for an ambitious and coordinated fiscal stance” from EU governments. The ECB “continued to stand ready to adjust all of its instruments, as appropriate”. President Christine Lagarde said separately that “any kind of tightening at the moment would be very unwarranted… and could lead to very serious risks”. Although it avoided last place among the majors (the Swedish krona was down by 1.3%), the euro shared the penultimate slot with the NZ dollar. The pair lost an average of 0.5%, with the euro giving up one and a half US cents and falling by two cents against sterling. Like sterling, the euro was not afforded much in the way of economic data to motivate potential buyers. Data from Europe centred on industrial production, in the Eurozone it went up by 2.5% in November, cutting its annual decline to 0.6%. The only ecostat of any consequence early in the week was the Sentix measure of Eurozone investor confidence, which improved from -2.7 to 1.3, its highest level since February. However, German GDP shrank by 5% in calendar 2020, so a data story of two halves.

Ryanair and Virgin Atlantic worst for lockdown flight refunds Ryanair and Virgin Atlantic have been rated the worst airlines for customer service by people who tried to get a refund after their flight was cancelled in 2020. Both airlines are said to have scored “abysmally low” in a recent survey carried out by consumer watchdog Which? The results of the survey, carried out in September of 2020, showed that as many as eight out of 10 customers were dissatisfied with the refund service they received after their flight was cancelled in 2020. Millions of flights around the world were grounded in 2020 as a result of the global pandemic, leaving passengers scrambling for refunds - which they are legally entitled to receive within seven days of a flight cancellation. The Which? survey also found that a third of passengers surveyed who had a flight cancelled by Ryanair or Virgin Atlantic waited more than three months for their refund. None of the Ryanair passengers surveyed received their refund within the legal time frame of seven days. A spokesperson for Virgin Atlantic this week acknowledged that refunds were delayed at the height of the pandemic but said it returned to dealing with them within the required timeframe in November 2020. A statement from the airline read, “We recognise that at the height of the pandemic, the huge volume

of refund requests we received, combined with the constraints on our teams and systems, meant that refunds took longer than usual to process, and we sincerely apologise to our customers for this. As planned, we completed the backlog of remaining refunds in November 2020 and returned to processing refunds within a normal timeframe, which we continue to do. Since 1 March 2020, we’ve processed £550m worth of cash refunds to Virgin Atlantic customers, comprising 245,000 refund claims.” Of the six airlines Which? included in the survey, Jet2 came out as best for customer service with a satisfaction score of 76%. Eight out of 10 Jet2 passengers (83%) told Which? they received their refund within 28 days, with 34%receiving it within seven days. None reported waiting more than three months. Tui had the second highest satisfaction score, at 57%, followed by British Airways with 50%. Easyjet scored 45%.

Half of British Airways passengers received their refund within seven days, which was better than any other airline in the survey. However, in separate research conducted more recently, Which? found that both British Airways and Ryanair are refusing to offer refunds on flights that continue to operate, despite people not being able to travel due to national lockdown rules. Which? asked five airlines about their policies. Jet2, Tui and easyJet said customers could claim a cash refund, even if the flight went ahead. British Airways said passengers had to rebook. Ryanair didn’t respond to Which? but its website claims that passengers can rebook. Rory Boland, editor of Which? Travel, said: “As the UK approaches the anniversary of the first nationwide

lockdown, it’s vital that lessons are learned from the previous handling of refunds and cancellations. Airlines cannot be allowed to continue to behave in this way, so the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) and Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) must be ready to act if any are found to still be breaking the law on refunds.” The CMA is now investigating whether airlines have broken consumer law by failing to offer cash refunds for flights people could not lawfully take because of lockdown restrictions. Boland pointed out that many people whose flights were grounded at the start of the pandemic rebooked for this year, little knowing that they might face the same problem in spring 2021 if travel restrictions have not been eased.

How’s your driving? How much do you know about the rules of the road in Spain? The DGT, Spain’s traffic authority, has launched an online quiz to test drivers with 15 multiple choice questions about driving in Spain. The test (available here: http://revista.dgt.es/es/test/Test-num256.shtml) is in Spanish but if you don’t have a good grasp of the language, simply paste the link into your Google Translate app or on your web browser and you can translate the entire text of the site into English. The theoretical and practical training of future drivers is very important to guarantee safety on our roads. However, experts believe it is just as important to refresh the knowledge of drivers who passed their test many years ago, since certain rules or road signs can easily be forgotten. For this reason, the DGT launched the new test last month and have invited drivers to test their knowledge and discover how much they know about traffic regulations.

Alicante Airport sees a Spain to get EU post 75% drop in 2020 Brexit boost Aena has made public the final balance of passenger traffic at Alicante Airport in 2020. December closed with 126,143 passengers, 85 percent less. A horrible end to a horrible year in which only 3,739,499 passengers have passed through the terminal; from the 15 million in 2019, that’s 75 percent less. El Altet falls one place in the national traffic ranking to sixth in Spain, surpassed by Gran Canaria. The third wave of covid has once again sunk air traffic at the Alicante-Elche airport in January, which has also suffered the consequences of the tightening of anti-covid measures in Europe and, above all, in Great Britain from where there are no longer daily flights to the Costa Blanca. The Government has also extended, until 2nd February, the limitation on the entry of conventional tourists to the province - only residents with a negative PCR can arrive- which represents a new hurdle for the hotels that remain open, some empty of tourists on certain days of the week. The terminals this week showed scenes reminiscent of the March confinement with just a handful of flights. The airport has had to reorganise its operations once again due to the

circumstances, with a further drop in passengers being detected. There is only one filter channel for the control of travellers who access the departure lounges and many commercial establishments are still closed due to the lack of potential customers nearly one year after the start of the confinement that would end the 2020 tourist season. The tourist crisis derived from the covid pandemic shows no sign of easing and the hoteliers of the Costa Blanca who work with the British market have now received a new blow. Jet2.com has postponed its return to the airport until 25th March due to travel restrictions in the United Kingdom. In principle, the aim of the airline was to have returned in mid-February. Passenger traffic at the airports in the Aena network fell by 72.4 percent in 2020, equivalent to almost 200 million fewer people, due to strong restrictions on mobility to deal with covid-19, although traffic from cargo suffered somewhat less. Aena reported that the number of passengers at the end of 2020 stood at 76.06 million compared to 275.24 million in 2019. The movements of aircraft operated were 1.10 million, 53.4 percent

less than a year before and 787,848 tons of cargo were transported throughout the network, 26.3 percent less. Virtually all passengers (75.6 million) were commercial and, of them, 33.75 million made domestic flights (60.6 percent less than in 2019) and 41.89 made international routes, a 77.8 percent decrease. The fall in passenger traffic was due to restrictions on mobility both in Spain and in the rest of the world, caused by the spread of covid-19 since last March and which still persists. By airports, the Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas registered the highest number of passengers in the network, with 17.11 million and a decrease of 72.3 percent compared to 2019; followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, with 12.74 million (-75.8 percent). In Palma de Mallorca, 6.11 million people were counted (79.4 percent); in Malaga-Costa del Sol, 5.16 million (-74 percent); in Gran Canaria, 5.13 million (61.3 percent); in Alicante-Elche, 3.74 million (-75.1 percent); in Tenerife South, 3.39 million (-69.6 percent) and in Tenerife NorthCiudad de la Laguna, 2.79 million (-52.1 percent).

Spain is one of seven countries set to receive a multi-million cash injection from the European Union to help support its industries that could be affected the most by Brexit. The reserve fund has been set aside for those whose trade with the UK could suddenly become loss-making, less lucrative, impossible or lead to a rise in costs due to customs barriers and other aspects of the eleventhhour deal reached by prime minister Boris Johnson with the rest of the bloc before Britain left the 'club' at the stroke of New Year. Ireland will benefit the most, given its geographical proximity to, and the fact it shares a land border with, the UK will mean it suffers the greatest financial impact. Spain is seventh on the list in terms of amounts given, and will receive €184.2 million, most of which will be for helping out its farming and fishing industries. Given that a majority of the UK's oranges come from the Valencia region and much of its fruit and vegetables is Spanish – lettuce typically comes from Murcia and tomatoes from Almería, for example – Spain will continue to trade with Britain broadly as before, other than where

timescales mean it is not viable for fresh produce, but costs will increase. One additional cost will be man-hours and new systems set up for the customs requirements now needed for Spanish and other European goods and produce to enter the UK, and the sectors receiving EU grants will likely spend some of their money on adapting these aspects. The Spanish fishing industry, among that of other European nations, will also be affected, since the 'sticking point' that held up the final Brexit trade deal until time had almost run out centred on access to British waters. With over 3,000 species of fish involved, many of which are not habitually consumed in the UK and the catch of which would almost entirely have been for other nations' use even prior to Brexit – such as herring, in the case of Sweden – negotiations in this area are unprecedented. Some of the EU reserve fund given to Spain and other affected nations can be used for creating and protecting jobs in all industries and professions, meaning a slice of it may help finance the 'furlough' or temporary lay-off programme through which employees are able to claim dole money, whether or not they have

accumulated enough through their working lives, to enable their firms to shut down or cut costs for a short period and afford to stay in business. In total, the reserve fund is €5 billion, of which €4bn will be handed out in 2021. Calculating how much each country was to get was based upon the 'relative level of economic involvement' the different nations had with the UK, which explains why some wealthier northern European countries will receive more than Spain as geographical closeness meant their trade was more constant and made up a bigger chunk of their national economy. A second payment will be made in 2024, by which time the EU will have a clearer idea of how much Brexit has cost recipient nations. This second and final cash injection is designed to recoup expenses incurred by affected industries, and which they are required to declare to European authorities. Where these additional expenses – accumulated purely as a consequence of Brexit – exceed the sum granted to the country in question in 2021, or are more than 0.06% of the national gross income for that year, the member State will receive a second payment.

Trump impeached for historic second time President Donald Trump has been impeached for a historic second time after the House of Representatives secured enough votes to charge him. A total of 10 Republicans voted against their party and Mr Trump, with the final result standing at 232 votes to impeach and 197 against. He is the first US president to be impeached twice previously charged over his calls with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. This time, Mr Trump is accused of inciting an insurrection following the deadly riots at the US Capitol on 6 January. The Republicans who voted for impeachment were: Anthony Gonzalez of Ohio, Peter Meijer of Michigan, Fred Upton of Michigan, Liz Cheney of Wyoming, John Katko of New York, Adam Kinzinger Illinois, Tom Rice of South Carolina, Jamie Herrera Beutler of Washington, Dan Newhouse of Washington and David Valadao of California. But the Senate trial that follows the House vote will not be imminent, with majority leader Mitch McConnell claiming there is not enough time for a "fair or serious trial" to take place before Joe Biden is sworn in. He said: "The president-elect himself stated last week that his inauguration on 20 January is the 'quickest' path for any change in the occupant of the presidency. "In light of this reality, I believe it will best serve our nation if Congress and the executive branch spend the next seven days completely focused on facilitating a safe inauguration and an orderly transfer of power to the incoming Biden

administration." Mr Biden fell short of welcoming the impeachment decision, but said instead: "I hope that the Senate leadership will find a way to deal with their constitutional responsibilities on impeachment while also working on the other urgent business of this nation." When the Senate finally do put Mr Trump on trial, they will need a two-thirds majority to officially impeach him. They can also vote to ban him from standing for election ever again - which only requires a simple majority (50% + 1). Mr Trump did little to condemn the riots in Washington DC as they took place, nor in the immediate aftermath, but in recent days has attempted to ease tensions. In a recorded statement from the White House after the impeachment vote he said: "There is never a justification for violence. If you do any of these things, you are not supporting our movement." He vowed to bring those involved in the riots "to justice", but did not mention his impeachment during the five-minute clip, saying the country's focus "must be on advancing the interests of the whole nation". The scenes at the Capitol left him "shocked and saddened", he added, describing the violence as a "calamity". More than 160 cases have been opened as a result of the rioting, with 70 people charged so far. It emerged that five-time Olympic medallist Klete Keller is among those charged. The 38-year-old swimmer stands accused after a video appeared to show him storm Capitol

buildings with a mob of Trump supporters. Since the riots, the president has been banned from most social media platforms - including Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and most recently Snapchat - and there has been little communication from the White House. But he did release a Twitter-esque statement via the press secretary ahead of the impeachment debate, saying: "In light of reports of more demonstrations, I urge that there must be NO violence, NO lawbreaking and NO vandalism of any kind. "That is now what I stand for, and it is

not what America stands for. I call on ALL Americans to help ease tensions and calm tempers. Thank You." Twitter founder Jack Dorsey posted to say he "does not celebrate or feel pride in having to ban @realDonaldTrump from Twitter".

But he says although it "sets a dangerous precedent", it was the right decision.

Snow leaves Madrid with Spain receives its first mammoth piles of rubbish doses of the Moderna Heaps of plastic rubbish bags were piled up alongside snowdrifts in downtown Madrid after a historic storm paralysed the city's infrastructure, leaving some 9,000 tonnes of uncollected waste lining its streets. Waste collection, which was suspended the previous Friday, restarted last Tuesday and had reached 40 percent capacity by that evening, the city council said in a statement. But discontent at the council's handling of the storm is rising, especially in the outskirts, according to the FRAVM federation of residents' associations. "Many of their streets remain blocked, there is no public

transport and they (residents) are suffering a lack of supplies," the group tweeted alongside pictures of stranded cars, heaps of trash and an ambulance crew struggling to dig out their vehicle. Just 15 percent of roads in the Spanish capital had been cleared of snow and ice by mid-last week, three days after Storm Filomena crashed through central Spain, bringing record low temperatures and cutting off transport links. Schools, universities and nurseries remained closed until at least yesterday. Some cars were circulating slowly on avenues in the centre, but many smaller streets remain

blocked by downed trees or treacherous ice patches. As the cleanup continues, politicians are struggling to count the cost of the damage wrought by the storm. "Madrid will receive a large bill from Filomena, one that reaches beyond several hundred million euros for sure," Madrid Mayor Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida told COPE radio station, adding that the hospitality sector alone had taken a 70 million euro hit. After some 150,000 trees were downed by the storm, Almeida said his administration would shortly put out a 15 million euro contract to assess the status of those that remain standing.

Covid19 vaccine Spain has received its first 35,700 doses of the Moderna Covid-19 vaccine, several weeks into its vaccination campaign, which until now has made exclusive use of the PfizerBioNTech inoculation. In total, the country is due to receive 600,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine before the end of the month of February. According to Spain’s Health Minister Salvador Illa, speaking after a Cabinet meeting, the quantities received will gradually rise, with 50,000 due to arrive in two weeks’ time, another 127,000 in a month, and 383,000 more in the third week of next month. The first doses arrived last Tuesday in 357 boxes on board a truck from Belgium, and were taken to a Health Ministry storage unit in the central area of Spain. The country is currently receiving 350,000 doses a week of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. Illa also pointed to the positive news that the AstraZeneca laboratory in the United Kingdom has also requested authorisation from the European

Medicines Agency to distribute its Covid vaccine in the European Union. The arrival of the new vaccines will not mean significant changes to the immunisation plan, which is currently focusing on seniors in residences and their carers, as well as front-line health workers. Judge decides to vaccinate Meanwhile, for the first time in Spain a judge has obliged an incapacitated resident of a senior home to be vaccinated against Covid-19, despite the opposition of her daughter. A court in Santiago de Compostela, in the northwestern region of Galicia, took the decision in record time after receiving the request from the DomusVi San Lázaro senior home on Friday evening. By Saturday evening the judge had

ruled in favour and gave instructions for the 84-yearold woman to be immunized. The judge found that the health of the woman should prevail over the opinion of her daughter, and despite the Covid vaccinations being voluntary in Spain. “Is it urgent to vaccinate a senior during the pandemic? The infection rates suggest it is,” the judge said. “It is well known that there is a high number of deaths and it was urgent to protect her. There are few more urgent things than saving a life.” According to Spain’s Institute for the Elderly and Social Services (Imserso), residences from all over the country have turned to the courts for permission to immunise incapacitated seniors despite the opposition of their families. In this case in Galicia, the daughter of the woman in question opposed the vaccination on fears of an adverse reaction to the vaccine and due to the “responsibility of having to make a decision for another person.”

Young Tom Hall (Art Parkinson) and his misfit friends fight to save "Buster" the baby elephant during the German air raid bombings of Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1941.

What to watch next If you’re nearing the end of your last binge worthy series, we have put together a list of our recent favourite so you can fire up Netflix or Prime and be ready to go with another great watch…

The Queen’s Gambit Nine year-old orphan Beth Harmon is quiet, sullen, and by all appearances unremarkable. That is, until she plays her first game of chess. Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels herself fully in control. By the age of sixteen, she's competing for the U.S. Open championship. But as Beth hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting. Based on the book by Walter Tevis. Interestingly, when the show first launched in autumn of 2020, multiple news outlets (including the New York Times, NPR, FOX Business, CNN, Forbes, Variety, and many others)

reported that due to the popularity of this series, sales of chess sets had skyrocketed and interest in learning the game had greatly increased. You A dangerously charming, intensely obsessive young man goes to extreme measures to insert himself into the lives of those he is transfixed by. Based on Caroline Kepnes' best-selling novel of the same name, YOU is a 21st century love story that asks, "What would you do for love?" When a brilliant bookstore manager crosses paths with an aspiring writer, his answer becomes clear: anything. Using the internet and social media as his tools to gather the most intimate of details and get close to her, a charming and awkward crush quickly becomes obsession as he quietly and strategically removes every obstacle - and person - in his way. Sex Education Socially awkward high school student Otis may not have much experience in the lovemaking department, but he gets good guidance on the topic in his personal sex ed course -- living with mom Jean, who is a sex therapist. Being surrounded by manuals, videos and tediously open conversations about sex,

Otis has become a reluctant expert on the subject. When his classmates learn about his home life, Otis decides to use his insider knowledge to improve his status at school, so he teams with whip-smart bad girl Maeve to set up an underground sex therapy clinic to deal with their classmates' problems. But through his analysis of teenage sexuality, Otis realizes that he may need some therapy of his own. Chernobyl In April 1986, an explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics becomes one of the world's worst man-made catastrophes. This series follows the stories of the men

and women, who tried to contain the disaster, as well as those who gave their lives preventing a subsequent and worse one. The series, which won two Golden Globes, follows Valery Legasov, the lead scientist working to control the disaster, Boris Shcherbina, a Soviet politician representing the interests of the Soviet government during the disaster, and Ulana Khomyuk, a nuclear physicist working to uncover the truth about what really happened at Chernobyl. The series Chernobyl tackles the problems that arise when the truth is ignored and kept from the public, begging the question:

"What is the cost of lies?". Avatar: The Last Airbender Released in 2005, this animated series has gained new traction since it started streaming on Netflix. In a war-torn world of elemental magic, a young boy reawakens to undertake a dangerous

mystic quest to fulfill his destiny as the Avatar, and bring peace to the world. The world is divided into four elemental nations: The Northern and Southern Water Tribes, the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation, and the Air Nomads. The Avatar upholds the balance between the nations, but everything changed when the Fire Nation invaded. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, can stop them. But when the world needs him most, he vanishes. A hundred years later Katara and Sokka discover the new Avatar, an airbender named Aang. Together they must help Aang master the elements and save the world.

Phillip is Rylan reveals why he waiting quit This Morning for a fall

Despite the pandemic, Phillip Schofield has barely been off our screens in the last year, but he admits that Dancing On Ice holds a special place in his heart. The 58year-old, who presents the ice spectacular with his This Morning cohost Holly Willoughby, says simply, “There’s nothing else like it. “We’ve got an amazing line-up. I’ve already had a phone call with Jason Donovan who said, “Mate, do you think I’m going to be alright?” I said, “You’re going to be fantastic.” He, like everyone, was pushed into doing the show by his kids. He’s frightened that he’s going to get broken, as is everyone, but that’s the nature of taking part in Dancing On Ice. Dancing On Ice will be a winter boost for all of us As always, there will be great dancing, great sparkle and great atmosphere. We’ll be big and we’ll be brash, bright, fun and full of fake tan, sparkles and glitter. You never want to see anyone hurt themselves but seeing someone skimming across the ice on their butt is always funny”.

Rylan Clark-Neal has revealed why his decided to quit This Morning. The Celebrity Big Brother and X Factor star, 32, solidified his TV favourite status with regular This Morning appearances but hasn't graced the sofa for two years now. And opening up about his decision to step back, Rylan says the show was letting him get too comfortable in his career. "I had a lovely time there and learnt a lot when it came down to working live and going on to host the show eventually," he said. "I took a step back and I think it was the right decision for me to get out of that bubble of not really pushing myself. I loved This Morning, but now it's nice to sit and watch it from home instead." Rylan added: "And I like a lay in too much. I can't deal with the early starts." And though Rylan adores Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary, Rylan admitted he was "gutted" to see "telly mum and dad" Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford go from their Friday slot. ITV announced last year that Alison

and Dermot would be replacing Eamonn and Ruth, who'd presented the Friday show for 14 years. But despite the shake-up, Rylan still tunes in on Friday mornings to watch "diamonds" Alison and Dermot. Rylan first shot to fame on The X Factor, before entering the Big Brother house. And since quitting This Morning he's landed a string of impressive gigs, including Big Brother's best of show last year and Strictly sister show It Takes Two over at the BBC. Rylan's first flirtation with fame was at just 18, when his Big Brother stint was called off before it had even begun. What followed was an appearance on a Sky Living modelling series, in which he reached the final, before in 2012 he stunned The X Factor judges with his vocals. A year later and with a stroke of poetic justice, he landed a spot in the Celebrity Big Brother house - and won it. "I got £100,000 to be in Big Brother," he said, "So to me, I'd won the lottery."

TV shows being rebooted With the news that Sex and the City will be making a return, it's got us thinking about what other series we need back in our lives. From the modern shows cancelled way before their time to the classic hits ripe for a revisit, there are dozens of fictitious worlds to dive back in to. As well as SATC's reboot (albeit without Kim Cattrall's Samantha), shows such as Gossip Girl and Dexter are lined up for new episodes.Even the Friends cast are set to reunite. Sex and the City It's the one everyone's talking about Carrie Bradshaw and co will return to the streets of Manhattan for a new 10-part installment of Sex and the City. Kim Cattrall won't be rejoining the cast in her role of Samantha, though. It will be the first time the cast have reunited since the second film was released in 2010. Gossip Girl After years of following this group of privileged teens around the Upper East Side of New York, the identity of Gossip Girl - a mysterious gossip blog that spied and meddled in their lives - was finally revealed.

The original programme launched the careers of Blake Lively, Penn Badgley and Ed Westwick, but there's a new roster of high-society teens taking to the screen this time around. 10 hour-long episodes are due to be released in 2021. Dexter Dexter was a run-away success in its early years, but its finale left viewers cold. Michael C Hall will be reviving his sympathetic serial killer role of Dexter Morgan though, with the new 10episode series set 10 years after the end of the original. Showrunner Clyde Phillips said: "It’s a great opportunity to write a second finale for our show." Friends It's not the reunion we'd all hoped for, but after so many years of wondering, we'll take whatever we can get out of the Friends cast. Jennifer Aniston, Matt LeBlanc, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, Matthew Perry and Courtney Cox will be back together for a reunion special. The cast will revisit the set of the hit sitcom for an hour-long event, but HBO Max have stressed that it's not a new episode.

Spain extends coronavirus restrictions on travel from United Kingdom The Spanish government has extended its restrictions on air and sea arrivals from the United Kingdom until 2nd February at 6pm. Only flights and ships carrying Spanish or Andorran citizens or official residents of those two territories will be allowed in, said Health Minister Salvador Illa following last week’s Cabinet meeting. Andorra is a microstate nestled between Spain and France. Authorities cited the epidemiological situation in Britain and concerns about the new strain of the coronavirus first detected in the UK as the reasons for this latest extension. “The epidemiological situation in the UK has grown progressively worse, and now shows a cumulative 14-day incidence of 1,031 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. This situation, together with the detection in Spain of cases involving the new variant, make it necessary to keep the measures in place until their impact on the evolution of the pandemic is known, especially the ways in which it could affect our country,” said the government in a statement. The travel limit was first introduced on 22nd December, then extended on 29th December for a period due to end on 19th January. The newest extension pushes the deadline to 2nd February, but leaves a door open to an earlier ending date.

during the first days of January due to airline confusion regarding permitted travel documents.

“Depending on how the situation and the pandemic evolve, and especially on what decisions might be taken in a coordinated way in the European Union, the Health Ministry could lift these limitations before the end of the period,” added the government statement. Passengers arriving in Spanish airports are required to have taken a PCR test or equivalent alternatives TIE receipt grace period expires Legal residents of Spain planning to

fly back from the UK should be aware that a grace period has ended for those who have applied for residency papers but have yet to receive their official documents. Due to confusion over changes caused by Brexit, the Spanish Foreign Ministry recently confirmed that the only documents currently being accepted as evidence of residency are either the recently created Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero (TIE) biometric identity card, or else the green residency

certificate (either the credit card-sized version or the A4 page). But from 4th to 10th January, authorities were also accepting proof of application to receive or renew TIE cards, a receipt known in Spanish as “resguardo de solicitud o renovación de tarjeta de extranjero.” This document was considered acceptable evidence for flying to Spain, even though in practice there were many cases of Spain-bound passengers who were refused boarding in the UK

Indonesia to resume Generalitat announces search following air crash a fund of 120 million to

help 33,000 companies

Indonesian divers prepared to resume a search for the remains of 62 victims and the cockpit voice recorder from a Sriwijaya Air plane that plunged into the Java Sea soon after takeoff, officials said. The search at the crash site of the downed Boeing 737-500, that was travelling from Jakarta to Pontianak, was temporarily suspended on Wednesday after bad weather whipped up high waves. "We hope that today’s weather will be calm," said search and rescue director Rasman MS. "With good weather that can support our operations, they (the divers) hope to achieve optimum results in finding the victims and plane debris.” A team of divers recovered one of the plane’s so-called black boxes, the flight data recorder (FDR), from the seabed earlier this week with efforts underway on Thursday to retrieve the cockpit voice recorder (CVR). With the cause of the fatal crash of the 27-year-old plane unclear, investigators will rely heavily on the black boxes to

determine what caused the jet to lose control minutes after take-off. Indonesia’s national transportation safety committee expects to download the FDR data in the coming days, said the committee’s chief, Soerjanto Tjahjono. The country’s transport ministry previously confirmed the ill-fated jet had been grounded in the early months of the coronavirus pandemic, but had passed airworthiness requirements in mid-December and resumed service shortly after. Divers had continued to retrieve plane debris, as well as body parts and the personal effects of the 62 Indonesians on board. The national police's disaster victim identification (DVI) team has identified six victims from the flight, including a crew member and two passengers, according to CNNIndonesia. The Sriwijaya crash is the second major airline disaster in Indonesia after 189 people were killed onboard a Lion Air Boeing 737 Max that plunged into the Java Sea minutes after take-off in 2018.

Regional President Ximo Puig has announced an aid scheme for the sectors most affected by the pandemic. The Generalitat will promote, together with councils and municipalities, a fund of 120 million with the aim of saving 33,000 companies and business owners across the Valencian Community from closure. The Generalitat will contribute 50 percent of the resources, the councils 30 percent and the town halls 20 percent. It is intended to give a boost to the groups of the hostelry industry, restaurants, nightlife, recreational activities, cultural activities, those associated with traditional festivals and travel agencies. These are the sectors hardest hit by the pandemic and restrictions and have been selected based on a technical report carried out by the Valencian Institute of Economic Research (Ivie). The initiative, which will come to light more over the next few days with the approval of a decree, has the objective of ensuring that those viable and autonomous companies with businesses that are now under minimum turnover are not forced to close and resist these hard months to return to being profitable once the epidemiological situation has been resolved. During his speech, the president stressed that the agreement has been

reached during a meeting of the institutional table with the support of all parties, including the Alicante Provincial Council led by the PP’s Carlos Mazón, who took the opportunity to also demand cuts in tax. “We have addressed the best possible help for the affected sectors, in this transition to the second semester in which we expect economic recovery after the advance of a vaccination," said President Puig. The head of the Consell also referred to the meetings that he has been holding in recent times with representatives of entities from the social and business sphere of the Valencian Community, and was convinced that “an agreement will be reached to facilitate the firms that is as viable as possible for the maintenance of their future activity ”. The Business Confederation of the Valencian Community (CEV) thanked those involved for the creation of the fund. In the absence of knowing how it will be exactly specified, the Valencian employer's association assured in a statement that it trusts that this project will contribute to alleviating the difficult situation that companies and self-employed hoteliers, hostellers, leisure, or travel agencies are going through. It also considered that a plan independent from the one announced is necessary for the hotel sector.

Travel to UK: new requirement Faced with a new surge in coronavirus cases, British authorities recently announced new pre-departure testing requirements for travellers to England. The British Embassy in Spain noted that the rule also applies to Scotland. “From 4am on 15 January, we will be introducing pre-departure testing requirements for all inbound passengers to England. Passengers arriving by ship, plane or train will have to take a test up to three days before departure and provide evidence of a negative result before they travel,” the Department for Transport said in a statement. “This will be an additional requirement that applies to all passengers, including those travelling from a travel corridor country, other than those on a very short list of exemptions. This extra layer of protection is in addition to existing selfisolation requirements,” added the note. The department said it would provide clear guidance and advice to passengers regarding testing standards and capacity. It mentioned PCR tests and said that accepted tests “could in some cases include LAMP and lateral flow tests within set limits.”

Easter cancelled due to covid, again The bishop of Alicante-Orihuela, Jesús Murgui, has signed a decree to abolishes all of the Easter parades and the penance stations in the Diocese for 2021. That is, for the second year in a row there will be no processions in the towns including Alicante, Orihuela, Elche, Crevillent and Torrevieja , because of the alarming increase in coronavirus cases. The decision is made in agreement with the Diocesan Board of Holy Week Brotherhoods. The bishop invited the brotherhoods to prepare for Lent and to increase aid to those who suffer loneliness and economic deficiencies due to the pandemic. A statement issued said: "The processions as they are known each year in each neighbourhood and parish have been suspended, but Holy Week itself will not be cancelled, it will be possible to enjoy in the privacy of our homes and parishes, a heartfelt and very intimate Holy Week In this sense, we all believe that it will be a Holy Week back to the origins of Holy Week itself and of the Passion of Our Lord. “We will soon meet with the mayor, the bishop and the brotherhoods to prepare an intimate and beautiful Easter."

Secrets of a happy daily routine From not hitting the snooze button when you wake up, to little changes you can make throughout the day, Dr Stuart Farrimond shares the secrets of a happy daily routine. Don’t start with coffee Caffeine is a powerful stimulant: it speeds up thinking, boosts motivation and lifts mood. Within 10 minutes of your earlymorning hit, caffeine sets to work on your brain by blocking adenosine, a naturally calming hormone. At this time of day, adenosine levels are naturally low, while the morning “wake-up” hormone, cortisol, is almost at maximum. A strong coffee or tea on top of that doesn’t make you more alert – it simply throws a few matches on to an already raging bonfire, promoting anxiety and jitteriness. You’re better off waiting a few hours until cortisol has waned and adenosine started to rise – then you can reap the full benefit of caffeine’s boost. Better yet, get out into daylight to boost levels of wake-up hormones. Try some gentle stretching to increase your heart rate, and improve blood flow to the parts of your brain that are still “asleep”.

Don’t hit snooze The most effective alarms are noisy, triggering a primal fear response in an area deep in the brain called the amygdala. Your heart rate soars as cortisol and adrenaline stream through the body. Hitting the snooze button only makes matters worse. When the alarm shocks you awake after 10-15 minutes, you go through the same biological torment. Over time, this can lower your mood and affect your physical health: years of this contributes to

the clogging of blood vessels, which can in turn increase the risk of heart problems. Know your body clock Everyone has a different body clock timetable (chronotype) that controls when they naturally wake, eat, work, play and sleep. A small proportion of us (14%) are primed to fire on all cylinders as soon as the sun rises (“morning larks”). Nearly a quarter of us are

energised around sundown (“night owls”). The rest fly somewhere down the middle. Most of us should avoid doing anything important for the early part of the day, because in the first few minutes after waking, reaction times are 360% slower and our ability to make good decisions is 51% worse. For threequarters of adults over 25, the brain hits primetime between 9am and noon; the body is primed for exercise between 2.30pm and 4pm; creativity peaks in the evening. Personalise your workspace Chaos is uncomfortable, but sterile, impersonal spaces are worse; they stifle creativity, while increasing anxiety and the risk of aches, pains and concentration difficulties. You’ll be more at ease and productive around familiar items: photos, posters and trinkets. You also need somewhere to put your feet up. Prioritise having a relaxing “third space” – a comfortable area, with ample daylight and ideally some greenery – to unwind and reflect. 18 arrested for buy and sell scams 18 people have been arrested, accused of over 100 so called ‘Nigerian Internet Scams’, revealed Guardia Civil this week. Victims were targeted in Alicante, Murcia and all over Spain through popular buy and sell sites and apps. As well as the 18 arrests, a further 13 people were questioned since the operation began back in November 2019. An investigation was launched after Guardia Civil received a spate of complaints from citizens who had been scammed by the gang. The modus operandi of those now under arrest consisted of contacting the victims through well-known buy and sell web portals, and after negotiating the purchase of an item, without haggling over the price and even offering more money for shipping costs, they agreed to payment when the item was delivered. Of course, once the item was delivered the money never materialised. To convince the seller that the payment had indeed been made, the scammers used email accounts impersonating the sales site, or the bank, to send false payment confirmation emails. Once the items were received, the members of the gang sold

them in secondhand shops, often using third party sellers, thus making the investigation even more difficult. Items included mobile phones, electrical appliances, video games consoles, computers and more. The proceeds from the sale of the items were mostly transferred to bank accounts in Nigeria. Guardia Civil were able to confirm around 100 crimes of fraud carried out by the gang and took the opportunity to issue a series of recommendations to internet users who wish to buy or sell items onlilne. • Always check that the page you are visiting is secure, especially if you are providing sensitive data. • Special care must be taken with the ‘offers’ that appear on the internet. You should not trust all the promotions and offers that appear on screen or in your email inbox. Always do your research before making a purchase (a very useful resource is TrustPilot which allows you to check the legitimacy of a website or online shop).

• The Guardia Civil has special dealing with internet crime which can be found at gdt.guardiacivil.es – here you can report fraud, and find out more about internet safety. • Other important tips include: Update your operating system regularly, always use an updated browser, choose strong and varied passwords for each internet service. • Regularly check the transactions of your bank account if you use your card to buy anything online. • Use an updated, licensed antivirus software and install a firewall. • Be wary of strange messages that you receive on social networks, especially if they include a link to access other content. • If you have a wireless router to connect to the Internet, change the default passwords and set a more secure one.

Benidorm in black Mercadona's new hair product takes social and white Benidorm archive workers have unearthed two cinecam movies from the 70s and 80s filmed to promote the town as a tourist destination. Workers at the Municipal Archive of Benidorm recovered the black and white footage, which was filmed on 16 and 35 mm cameras 40 years ago. The Councilor for Historical Heritage, Ana Pellicer, explained that "both films were in the Municipal Archive but until now we had not been able to know their content, since we lacked the technical means to reproduce them." Councillor Pellicer explained, "through an agreement with the Valencian Film Library we have been able to resolve this issue” revealing that the Valencian Cultural Insitute took on the task of digitising both film reels. The first of the films, 16 millimeters, is entitled Next Year Benidorm and was shot and produced 45 years ago. A large

part of the team in charge of the promotional video were from Benidorm itself. The film lasts just over 17 minutes and showcases some of the main tourist attractions that emerged in Benidorm in the 70s. As well as the beaches and hotels, viewers

can also see some of the very first nightclubs to emerge in Benidorm in the mid 70s such as Cable Sky or the legendary Limón Express. About the second film, entitled simply ‘Benidorm’ and shot on 35mm, experts do not yet know which year it was filmed but guess it was around 1985. The 7 minute short film shows new landmarks and urban

development as well as the Fiestas, nightlife, entertainment and family activities. Councillor Pellicer said that "in addition to showing the evolution of the city and leaving us images to remember such as our Levante beach with awnings, these audiovisual documents are of great value from the point of view of research." She concluded, "they allow us to study the evolution of tourism promotion and marketing in Benidorm and analyze the changes that took place in just one decade in aspects such as language, communication, image or the tourist products that were promoted" . The city council is now looking at ways to publicise the content of the videos and anticipate that the cultural department will be working to recover and digitize all the audiovisual promotional material found in the Municipal Archive.

Mars, Snickers and Superfoods that are going Twix now come in to be huge in 2021 100 calorie bars There’s nothing nicer then settling down on the sofa with a huge cup of tea/coffee/hot chocolate and a chocolate bar. Mars bars are particularly great for dunking, if that’s your thing (of course it is – dunking is everyone’s thing.) But if you’ve started the year how you mean to go on by cutting back a little on treats like chocolate bars, you may be struggling to delete them from your life completely. That’s where these snazzy little 100 calorie bars come in. Mars, Snickers and Twix bars now come in 100 calorie (or less) bars for those of us trying to cut down a little after the over-indulging that Christmas inevitably brings. These snackable bars cater to the 68 percent of those surveyed who recently said they would rather have a smaller

portion of their favourite chocolate bar than a larger amount of a lower-sugar chocolate bar. Makes sense to us! Kerry Cavanaugh, Marketing Director at Mars Wrigley UK (which makes all three chocolate bars) said: “If you’re like me and love a sweet treat but are calorie conscious, these chocolate bars are for you! Our new 100 calorie range gives people their favourite brands in a smaller size. Which is perfect for those who said recently that they would prefer less of their favourite chocolate than to compromise on taste.” The 100 calorie or less range is widely available and can be bought in single bars or in 10-packs and will soon be stocked in local shops selling British products such as Iceland and Tesco Food Co.

the basics. Do you know what makes something a superfood? The definition of a superfood is "a food (such as salmon, broccoli, or blueberries) that is rich in compounds (such as antioxidants, fibre, or fatty acids) considered beneficial to a person's health." Now that we've established what they are, let's get to the good stuff. Here, 11 superfoods that are primed to reach banana bread-level fame this year. Fermented foods Love a good bottle of kombucha, bowl of yogurt, or pickles straight from the jar? Then you're already familiar with fermented foods. Basically, they're foods that contain good bacteria and yeasts, aka probiotics. Kimchi is another great example. Fermented foods help to support gut health, which can, in turn, support immune health and obviously, our immune systems are a huge priority these days.

seeds - are already having a moment, and they'll continue to be big in 2021. They're just a great way to add protein and fibre to pretty much anything you're eating.

Green Tea Green tea sales are on the rise, probably thanks to the fact that it's know to support immune health. The drink is packed with flavonoids, powerful

antioxidants that are good for overall health. Plus, it's anti-inflammatory so it can help your immune system calm from inflammation.

Blueberries If blueberries aren't already a staple in your fridge, they totally should be. They're really high in antioxidants, which are good for internal health. Oh, and they have a lot of fibre too.

Avocados Avocado is one of the most-loved superfoods, and will continue to be this year. Which is a good thing, considering they're a major source of healthy fats.

Seeds Seeds - especially chia and hemp

Spinach & leafy greens These guys are full of fibre and

nutrients, so you should aim to incorporate them into your meals on the reg. Besides spinach, the leafy greens category includes things like mustard greens, kale, and cabbage, bok choy, and basically anything else that's leafy and green. Nuts Just like avocados, nuts contain lots of healthy fats which help give you energy and can make meals feel more filling. Walnuts are a good choice because they're high in omega-3 fatty acids, which support immune health and overall well-being.

Ancient grains Here's a category of superfoods that you probably haven't heard of. Ancient grains is a term used to describe protein, fibre-, and potassium-rich grains like amaranth, millet, teff, farro and freekeh. Think of them like rice—but with more nutrients. Salmon Salmon is also an amazing source of omega-3 fatty acids (although technically a different type of them). It provides a lot of protein, too. And if you can only find the canned version, don't panic. You'll still get the benefits.

There’s a scientific reason McDonald's Cola tastes better Why is it that McDonald’s CocaCola tastes a million times better than any other Coke? It is 100 percent Coca-Cola, so it’s not some magic even-better-thanCoke beverage that gets pumped out in Maccy D’s. So, what is it that makes it hit different? Well, apparently, it has a lot to do with the size of the straws...yes really. TikTok user and former McDonald’s employee @evilglitterqueen (also known simply as Michael) revealed that the straws at McDonald’s are made to be a certain length and width so more bubbles hit your tongue when you drink it, and that makes it taste better. Michael, who lives and worked in a US branch of McDonald’s, was replying to someone’s request for

employees of larger companies to share insider information from their job when the straw secret came out. Michael started the video by saying, “I worked at McDonald’s and I learned so much stuff. You think that they’re just fast food and whatever but there’s so much science behind it. “For example, your straw at McDonald’s is larger - do you know why it’s larger? Because it lets more carbonation hit your tongue and makes the soda taste better. “That’s why it’s better at McDonald’s.” The McDonald’s US website confirms the straw thing, and also adds that the Coke syrup is prechilled before it’s added to the

drinks machines; adding to the amazing flavour. In a FAQ section of the website, the answer to “Why does the Coca-Cola taste so good at McDonald’s?” reads: “The water and Coca-Cola syrup are prechilled before entering our fountain dispensers with the ratio of syrup set to allow for ice to melt. We also keep our fountain beverage system cold, so your drink is always refreshing. In order to ensure our drinks are always meeting a gold standard, we filter all the water before it enters fountain dispensers. “There’s also our straw - it’s slightly wider than a typical straw so all that Coke taste can hit your taste buds.”

Red Bailey’s is back for Valentines Day Stop what you’re doing immediately and listen up. Baileys has just announced that it is bringing back its red velvet flavour for Valentine's Day 2021. Baileys Red Velvet was first introduced in the USA when the cream liqueur brand joined forces with America’s Georgetown Cupcake. And after it was such a big hit in the UK last year, it's now

returning and spread its wings across Europe. Were certainly hoping local retailers here on the Southern Costa Blanca will be stocking up. Baileys says, “Now you can have your cupcakes and drink them too”, and describes the dreamy drink as, “Sweet, silky and creamy. And wonderfully warming and seductive whether

it’s poured over ice and served in a tumbler or added to your coffee.” The booze brand adds, “Encapsulating the classic cake taste of sumptuous chocolate and cream cheese frosting without being too sweet – Baileys Red Velvet has cocoa running through it to provide a slight but irresistible richness.

More toothpaste brands Allergens found in ‘perfumefree’ cosmetics switch to recyclable tubes A recent study has found a concerning number of European cosmetics products marked as ‘perfume-free’ contained allergens. The study was coordinated by the EDQM (The European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines and Healthcare) and concluded that cosmetics sold throughout Europe failed to comply with legislation governing allergy inducing fragrances. Tests were conducted by the European Network of Official Cosmetics Control Laboratories (OCCLs) to assess compliance by cosmetics brands in terms of EU legislation on safety, labelling and claims. In total, 932 samples of cosmetics, such as skin, hair and lip care products, as well as deodorants and perfumes, were collected in eight European countries between 2018 and 2020. The sampled products had been manufactured in 34 different countries, with the majority (85%) manufactured in Europe. Of these, 544 samples were marked “perfume-free” (or a similar statement). The overall compliance of products tested in this market surveillance study was 80% but it fell to 59% for perfumes. Incorrect labelling All samples were tested for the presence of 24 specific allergenic fragrance compounds. Results showed that 7.7% of samples were noncompliant with legislative requirements due to a missing or false declaration of allergenic fragrance compounds and 2.3% due to claims that the authorities considered misleading.

Furthermore, 3.1% of products marketed as perfume free, fragrance free or similar contained allergenic fragrance compounds. Linalool, benzyl alcohol and limonene were the most frequent sources of noncompliance. 12.7% of the samples tested were deemed non compliant for a range of other reasons including incorrect labelling or unauthorised claims. Some preservatives were also not in accordance with European regulations (iodopropynyl butylcarbamate, methylisothiazolinone). Further objections were due to high content of cadmium or low molecular weight mineral-oil compound found in lip-care products. Two products (0.2%) were assessed as unsafe products, one due to the prohibited use of iodopropynyl butylcarbamate in a body lotion and one because of microbiological contamination. According to the EDQM, there was no significant difference in the noncompliance levels within the different European countries included in the study. “Ensuring compliance of cosmetic products is key to avoiding potential health risks. The problems revealed by this study demonstrate the continuing need for close co-operation between Official Cosmetics Control Laboratories, in the interest of public health in Europe,” commented Susanne Keitel, Director of the EDQM.

Consumer giant Procter & Gamble is starting the switch to recyclable tubes for its Crest, Oral-B and Blend-a-med toothpaste brands. The change is being rolled out this month with a full conversion of its inventory across Europe and the US by 2025. P&G reached an agreement with Albéa to start using their proprietary Greenleaf Generation 2 HDPE tube technology. The transition begins this month, January 2021. “Toothpaste tubes are used by millions of consumers every day; however, its multimaterial construction poses a challenge for recycling facilities around the globe. The solution to this is the HDPE – HighDensity Polyethylene – tube, which provides the same product protection as current tubes, and which has been certified by North American and European recycling bodies to be compatible with existing recycling technologies. These HDPE tubes can be recycled where collection programs exist,” explained P&G. Procter & Gamble is in discussions with several HDPE tube suppliers and has already reached an agreement with Albéa to start using its tube technology. Albéa’s Greenleaf tubes are the first to be recognized as recyclable by the APR (Association of Plastic Recyclers) in North America and by RecyClass and SUEZ.circpack in Europe. “These certifications confirm that the tubes can be recycled within the existing HDPE bottles recycling streams,” said Albéa. Colgate-Palmolive launched its first HDPE toothpaste tube last year. Virginie Helias, P&G’s Chief Sustainability

Officer said “Our leading oral care brands touch millions of people around the world. This new packaging innovation will contribute to making the toothpaste tubes recyclable at scale in existing recycling streams, hence reducing our footprint and striving for circular solutions. It’s no longer about if or what we can do, but how quickly we can do it.”

Even low levels of alcohol consumption increase the risk of heart problems Drinking half a pint of beer or a small glass of wine a day increases the risk of irregular heart rhythm by 16 percent, research has found. Increasing alcohol consumption to two drinks a day, meanwhile, increases the risk by 28 percent, which rises to 47 per cent for those who consumed more than four a day. A study of 108,000 people has found that even people who regularly drink a modest amount of alcohol are at increased risk of atrial fibrillation, a condition where the heart beats in an abnormal rhythm. “These findings are important as the regular consumption of alcohol, the ‘one glass of wine a day’ to protect the heart, as is often recommended for instance

in the lay press, should probably no longer be suggested without balancing risks and possible benefits for all heart and blood vessel diseases, including atrial fibrillation,” said Professor Renate Schnabel of the University Heart and Vascular Centre in Germany. The researchers analysed information on 107,845 people taking part in five communitybased studies in Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark and Italy. A total of 100,092 participants did not have atrial fibrillation when they enrolled and their average age was nearly 48 years old. During the follow-up period of nearly 14 years, 5,854 people developed atrial fibrillation. The associations between alcohol consumption and the risk of atrial

fibrillation were similar for all types of alcoholic drinks and for men and women. The study is published in the European Heart Journal. Prof. Schnabel said: “To our knowledge, this is the largest study on alcohol consumption and long-term incidence of atrial fibrillation in the community. Previous studies have not had enough power to examine this question, although they have been able to show a relationship between alcohol intake and other heart and blood vessel problems, such as heart attack and heart failure. In our study, we can now demonstrate that even very low regular alcohol consumption may increase the risk of atrial fibrillation.”

Feeling left out I live alone, and am trying to make the best of things given the current situation. I suggested to my friends at home that we all go on a group chat. At first it was great, and we all chimed in, chatting regularly. Then I noticed that they were all having conversations amongst themselves. Truthfully, I started to feel very much left out. They rarely remember that I am over here by myself. In previous years they have been happy to come and stay with me in the summer for their holidays and also Christmas, but I have never received an invitation from them to go over and stay with them. Two Christmases ago they all got together and stayed at a posh country spa hotel in Yorkshire, and didn’t think to invite me to fly over. I can understand. When we first moved over here, all my old friends (and some I didn't know that well) were queuing up wanting to stay with me, with no one offering to return the favour or put me up when I needed to fly home. As far as the group chat is concerned, don’t cut off your nose to spite your face; there’s nothing stopping you from joining in with the conversations. Ok, they’ve been a bit insensitive but some people rarely realise there’s a problem until they are told about it. You could say hi, and are wondering why no one has questioned where you have gone, but that may make you look hurt. Join in again with light comments and responses to their posts and you may find everything reverts back to the way it was. Remember we've all been through a lot this last year. As for them wanting to stay with you in Spain next time (once things are better with Covid of course), make it clear to them that you would welcome a return of favour next time you want to go to the UK.

Bold new branding for Kia Kia has revealed its new corporate logo and global brand slogan that it hopes will signify the automaker’s bold transformation and all-new brand purpose. The introduction of the new logo represents Kia’s ambitions to establish a leadership position in the future mobility industry by revamping nearly all facets of its business. A Kia spokesperson said, “The logo is a symbol of Kia's new brand purpose and the values it promises to offer customers through future products and services, and the experiences these enable. Kia seals its brand promise by developing the new logo to resemble a handwritten signature. The rhythmical, unbroken line of the logo conveys Kia's commitment to bringing moments of inspiration, while its symmetry demonstrates confidence. The rising gestures of the logo embody Kia’s rising ambitions for the brand, and, more importantly, what it offers customers.” “Kia’s new logo represents the company’s commitment to becoming an icon for change and innovation”, said Ho Sung Song, Kia’s President and CEO.

“The automotive industry is experiencing a period of rapid transformation, and Kia is proactively shaping and adapting to these changes. Our new logo represents our desire to inspire customers as their mobility needs evolve, and for our employees to rise to the challenges we face in a fastchanging industry.” The new logo was unveiled during a record-breaking pyrotechnic display in the skies above Incheon, Korea. The event saw 303 pyrodrones launching hundreds of fireworks in a synchronized artistic display, igniting and celebrating Kia’s new beginning. This set a new

Guinness World Record for ‘Most unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) launching fireworks simultaneously’. The dazzling display can be seen on the Kia Global YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/s61_IsjqLzc

Older, wealthier drivers more likely to speed, claims survey A third of drivers admitted to breaking the speed limit, with older, higher-earners among the worst offenders, a new survey has revealed. The survey found that mature, employed, higher earners more likely to break the law than their younger counterparts The study, carried out by Venson Automotive Solutions, also highlighted a need for a greater number of visible speed limit signs, as motorists admit they have unwittingly speeded because they did not know the limit for the roads they were driving on. It also found that employed 35-54 year olds, earning an above average salary, are more likely to speed than their younger counterparts –

knowingly or otherwise. Simon Staton, Director of Client Management at Venson Automotive Solutions comments, “Our survey findings suggest that more needs to be done to make people aware – both in terms of in-car tech to alert drivers to their speed and dominant signage on roads – of varying speed limits, particularly in the wake of new reduced limits across many towns and cities. Driving a vehicle at excess speed is one of the most common motoring offences. However, with the HSE estimating that "more than a quarter of all road traffic incidents may involve somebody who is driving as part of their work at the time" more must be

done to curb speeding.” “Fleet managers and businesses need to ensure they have a Duty of Care policy in place that includes driver licence checking, driver risk assessments and driver training. It is important to also monitor speeding fines and accident data to understand the drivers that pose a risk to the business, themselves and other road users, and work with them to improve their behaviour behind the wheel. Businesses can also encourage user-choosers to consider in-car technology to help them drive responsibly such as intelligent speed assistance systems. Educating drivers and ensuring best practices are in place will in turn save lives.”

The launch of the new logo follows the announcement of Kia’s ‘Plan S’ long-term business strategy in 2020. Under Plan S, Kia, among other objectives, has the ambition to take a leading position in the global car market. This is focused on popularizing electric vehicles and introducing a broad range of mobility services, tailored to meet the needs and tastes of individuals and local markets.

Forgetting the Rules Has the Covid-19 pandemic changed your driving habits? According to the study presented by Autopistas, many drivers have adapted their driving, but not for the better, increasing speed, forgetting indicators, and not respecting safety. More speed The study has shown that 58% of light vehicles and 53% of heavy vehicles travel on motorways above the maximum speed limits. Let's remember that these limits are 120 kilometres per hour for light vehicles, 90 kilometres per hour for heavy vehicles and 100 kilometres per hour for coaches. This has led to an increase in the average speed, considering all vehicles: it has gone from 111.8 kilometres per hour to 112.6 kilometres per hour. The highest speeds are recorded on weekends. Indicators matter The report also revealed an alarming fact: how little we use indicators when we are going to overtake or change lanes. Almost 75% of drivers do not correctly signal these manoeuvres, even though it is mandatory. Better, at a distance The regulations

require

driving while respecting a minimum safety distance, something that 15% of light vehicles do not comply with, according to the Autopistas report. The mobile, a danger The study also determines that more than 3% of drivers continue to use a mobile phone while driving. Standing for an hour at any point on the highway, we can see up to 35 people with their mobile in hand while they are behind the wheel. We must not forget Knowing the results of this study serves as a reminder that driving at an inappropriate speed increases the probability of dying or suffering serious injuries in the event of an accident. It also limits our ability to react to any unforeseen event. It is the so-called "tunnel effect": the faster we go, the more our field of vision is reduced, so we also decrease our ability to anticipate. Regarding the use of turn signals, Autopistas emphasises that it is mandatory to signal any manoeuvre that we are going to

carry out, as stated in the General Traffic Regulations. Not using the indicators carries a financial penalty of 200 euro. The regulations also oblige us to keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of us, which guarantees us to be able to brake in the event of an unforeseen event without risk of collision. The mobile phone can be a great ally for driving or a dangerous enemy with fatal consequences. In this sense, Autopistas reminds us that using the telephone while driving causes us a triple distraction: visual, cognitive, and manual. For example, dialling a number on the phone when we drive at 120 kilometres per hour means that we will blindly travel more than 400 meters (about 4 football fields). This distance increases if, instead of a call, we write a message. According to the data, around 30% of traffic accidents are caused by distractions. Although the use of seat belts has become widespread in recent years, Autopistas consider it necessary to continue insisting it is used because itreduces, by half, the risk of death in the event of an accident. It should be remembered that last summer, 27% of people who lost their lives in a traffic accident were not wearing their seat belts.

Proper Seat Belt Use

Hidden Vehicle History – Buying Advice A recent survey reveals that a staggering 42% of used car buyers don’t know who legally owns a car that has finance owing on it. The truth is that a vehicle with outstanding finance belongs to the finance house, which has the legal right to repossess that vehicle at anytime, without warning; 1 in 4 cars checked by HPI are subject to outstanding finance. Nearly a quarter of those surveyed (23%) assumed the car belongs to the person named on the vehicle’s Log Book, highlighting the extent of misconception amongst consumers. The good news for consumers buying from a dealer is, that if they later discover the vehicle is on finance and repossessed, they will be protected by Innocent Purchaser Protection (IPP) and will be able to get back their money and buy another car. HPI recommends that you always conduct a vehicle history check BEFORE you buy, it will tell you if the car has outstanding finance against it and enables you to ensure that the finance agreement is concluded before you complete the purchase. In Spain, similar checks can be conducted through the website of the traffic department, the DGT, via www.dgt.es.

On the front page of the website, under “Trámites”, you will see a link that reads “Informe del Vehículo”. There are many other useful links too, all which are worthwhile looking into, but it is this “Vehicle report” that we are concentrating on here. The vehicle registry in Spain is managed by the DGT, but the information contained in the database is available to members of the public who have a legitimate reason for requesting the data. If you know the vehicle number plate or chassis number, you can find out such details as the vehicle Ownership, specifications, number of previous owners, administrative status and ITV expiration date. Your identification by means of a digital certificate needs to be provided in order to obtain the information on record; this might prove a hurdle to non-Spanish speakers, but on on-line translator such as Google can help with most of the content. There is a small administration fee for obtaining the information, which can be paid for by credit or debit card. Although that fee is considerably lower than the financial risk of purchasing a car that has a dubious history or has sanctions in place against it.

Seat belts are designed for one purpose only, to save lives. Statistics show that by wearing a seat belt the probability of death when involved in a collision is halved, whereas according to the data from the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) and the Instituto Universitario de Tráfico y Seguridad Vial (INTRAS), the risk of death is cut by a staggering 77% in an overturned vehicle. However, for the seat belt to be effective, it must be worn correctly, in order for it to fulfil the function it is designed for fully. The correct way to wear the seat belt is for it to go across the torso diagonally, and across the waist, firmly secured in these positions. The top part must be on the hard part of the collarbone, halfway between the shoulder and the neck. The lower end sits against the hardness of the pelvis. The three-point seat belt, which is fitted as standard to most modern vehicles, has an upper (thoracic) and a lower band (pelvic). Both must be snugly fitting against the body. For the seat belt to offer maximum protection it must be on the hard parts of the body, leaning against the collarbone, halfway between the shoulder and neck at the top, and the iliac crest of the pelvis, never on the abdomen. Accessories such as cushions or other additions should not be used. Once you have pulled the seat belt across your body and secured the strap in the locked position, make sure that the seat belt is not twisted at any point. If it is, undo the seat belt and remove the twists. Once secure, pull the seat belt so that it fits snugly against the body, with any slack being taken back at the top. If the seat belt is not worn correctly, it can cause further problems in the event of a collision. For example, if the upper band is taken off the shoulder, it can cause a head impact with the windscreen, dashboard or seat in front. It can also produce cervical lesions. If the belt is not firm around the body it can cause the vehicle to slide under the belt, casing lower body and spinal injuries. This is often referred to as the “submarine effect”. To prevent “submarining”, the vehicle occupants must also sit in a proper position when riding in the vehicle, with the seat belt securely fastened as mentioned, and without having any additions such as pillows or cushions which may contribute to the reduction of effectiveness of the seat belt. It is also important to remember the one seat belt – one seat rule. All vehicle occupants are obliged to wear a seat belt, both in the front and the back seats. Some vehicles only have two seat belts in the back for example, and so that vehicle can only carry two passengers on that seat. There are other rules regarding children in cars. Primarily, children under 1.35 metres in height are not allowed to travel in the front seats and they most use an appropriate restraining system for their height and weight.

Elche CF, Oh Dear! It is not often that La Liga matches are postponed due to snow, but that is exactly what happened to Elche's Sunday fixture against Madrid based Getafe. It was played 24 hours later on Monday 11th, once the transport networks were restored. It was a must win match as the Franjiverdes had slipped down into the relegation places following 11 league matches without a win. The Getafe side presented a couple of interesting team members; Firstly the Getafe gaffer José Bordalás Jiménez, was born in Alicante. He played for Torrevieja and many other local teams as well as managing Elche CF from 2009 to 2012 where he a win ratio of 44%, he has been with Getafe since 2016. Secondly; 19 year old Japanese born Kubo arrived at Getafe on Friday on loan from Real Madrid. Due to the storm he had not even completed a training session with his new team before being substituted on in the 65th minute. The game started well for the Franjiverdes with a near miss by Boye within seconds of the opening whistle, followed just 4 minutes later by a goal from Raúl Guti, his first in La Liga after his 4 million euro transfer from Real Zaragoza. Then Almiron's men took their foot off the gas and paid a high price. Getafe, after several failed attempts found the back of the net with a powerful header from Cucurella. The second half started badly for Elche. One of their most talented players, Fidel, was injured and then the ex Boca Junior Marcone, fell foul to the pepper in his blood and after receiving

a yellow was dealt a red by the ref, leaving his team a man down. Elche did not recover and could not retain the draw. Kubo, the Japanese, entered and with his first kick took a great shot that Edgar cleared as best he could, but the rebound found Mata and then the back of the net. The final blow came when Elche's Verdu conceded a penalty which Angel pocketed without a problem. 1-3 with all 3 of the golden points going to the visitors. On Saturday Elche fielded a much changed team for their 32nd round of the Copa del Rey against Real Vallecano, as Almiron was saving his men for Tuesdays fixture. Originally planned for a 12:00 kick off, the match was changed twice due to the snow which had made the pitch unplayable. First it was delayed until 16:00, but less than an

hour before kick off the location was changed to the Las Rozas stadium and kick off delayed until 22:00, when the temperatures in Madrid were -3 degrees. Needless to say the makeshift team did not worry Real Vallecano, who won the match 2-0. This week, Elche CF have two matches. On Tuesday the 19th at 19:00 they will play Valladolid and then they will face Barcelona on Sunday 24th at 16:15. As soon as spectators are allowed back into the stadiums, EuroTourGuide will once again be offering Coach Tours with Match Tickets to support Elche CF. TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Massive media build-up, tick. Managers sniping at each other, tick. One set of fans getting ideas above their station, tick. All the ingredients for the ultimate flat pancake were in the pan going into the top-of-the-table clash at Anfield - and who really believed we’d be heading into this match with it (a) being a top-of-the-table clash and (b) it being United who were top? King Kloppo clearly wasn’t that worried by the threat of Manchester United, selecting Jordan Henderson at centre-back (no choice) and Shakiri in midfield (plenty of choice). And, in fairness, he could have played himself at the back in the first-half as United rarely threatened to do to the counter part of their counterattacking game. Realistically, this match was always likely to be a draw as United would have been delighted with that and Liverpool really could not afford to lose - but given that Liverpool had scored in the previous 43 games at Anfield and United had scored in the last 23 matches away from home you’d have banked it as a 1-1, not a 00. Should United have gone for it a little more given the makeup of Liverpool’s defence? Meh, maybe but was it worth the risk of losing their three-point lead over their rivals? Probably not. It was the kind of spectacle that gets filed under ‘tactically interesting’ which is a nice way of saying it was a little dull - but hey, at least the Premier League didn’t have to worry about inappropriate celebrations in close proximity being beamed around the globe. Ole claimed United were ‘disappointed only to draw’ but you’d have struggled to tell that given some of the reactions of his players on the final whistle. Manchester City were possibly the biggest winners from the tepid clash, and would have been further boosted with the absence of Wilf Zaha from Crystal Palace’s line-up reducing the Eagles’ chances of winning to 1% from 5%, though Christian Benteke also being out threatened to move them back up to 4%. John Stones has been cast as a footballing Renaissance man in recent weeks with City struggling to concede with him back in the side but he made a difference at the other end of the pitching scoring a brace goals that must have inspired Raheem Sterling to remember where the back of the net was, the England international boosting his tally to something like 3 in 13. City have been grinding out wins recently, but a 4-0 over Palace? Be worried pace-setters, be very worried. Up at Brammal Lane, you could feel

the collective groan from Tottenham fans after Serge Aurier scored so early against Sheffield United. Surely, even against the worst team in the Premier League, Spurs would not sit back and consider the job done with a single goal lead? They must have learned by now, right? Well, against all odds, yes they have - and you could even argue the Blades scored at the perfect time for Jose Mourinho’s men not to find a way of grabbing a point from the jaws of all three. Son and Kane were involved throughout, obvs, but it was the casual outside-of-the-boot-from-acrazy-angle-when-not-even-looking from Tanguy Ndombele that settled matters - some are (wrongly) suggesting it’s a goal of the season contender. Gareth Bale must be hoping another cup game against a minnow opposition is coming up soon so he might get a run-out. Mind you, at least he made it into the squad - Dele Alli clearly didn’t show enough fight in training to convince Jose to make him an equally unused substitute for this one.

It would not have been a great surprise if the Chelsea dressing room had been singing ‘Here’s to you Mr Robinson’ after their win at Fulham the red card for Scott Parker’s left-back following a bit of a bad challenge on Azpilicueta was the turning point in a finely-balanced match. Mason Mount keeps getting told he is ‘Frank’s teachers’ pet’ or ‘Frank’s boy’ or ‘he needs to score more goals’ and he got the winner - will that get him a week off from the needless negativity? Maybe. It was a decent finish after Callum Hudson-Odoi, Chelsea’s most effective attacking player this season if you actually look at the data, brought some urgency to the field. Kasper Schmeichel had the perfect 400th day out for Leicester City - three points, a clean-sheet and a front-row seat of some socially-distant celebrations from James Maddison. It wasn’t just Maddison who will have caught the eye of Gareth Southgate watching on from the stands - Harvey Barnes is continuing to live up to my early shout of ‘could be as good as Raheem Sterling’ by adding goals to his game. Granted, there’s a few players in an England queue ahead of him but he’s got to be worth a shout

for the Euros if he keeps this up until the end of the season. Leeds were nailed on to beat Brighton by five or lose at Elland Road. And they lost - courtesy of Neal Maupay’s goal, something that will be celebrated by strikers worldwide given how often we are seeing teams line-up without a recognised centreforward nowadays. Equally nailed on was West Ham and Burnley to be under 1.5 goals, for those of you that love losing your money at the weekend. Michail Antonio needed a matter of minutes to show the Hammers’ fans that selling Haller for a £25m loss almost made sense and David Moyes will now be finding creative ways to ensure Antonio’s hamstrings last the rest of the season. Big Sham is finally underway at the Albion - and he’d do well to thank the defending of Wolverhampton Wanderers. It is very, very rare that you see Connor Coady have a shocker but that is exactly what he had - at least Willy Boly had the decency to go and get an assist and a goal having given away a penalty.
