More than half of the population staying home at weekends Perimeter closures in the province of Alicante have prompted more than half of the local population to remain at home during weekends. The

weekend confinement of cities and towns with populations of over 50,000 people now means that journeys on Sundays are just 45% of what they

were before the pandemic. Weekend closures of the main cities in the Alicante province now mean that more than half of the population is staying at home on weekends. This is according to a study carried out by the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda through the positioning of mobile phones. Since the new restrictions were implemented in the Valencian Community, more than 50% of the inhabitants of the Alicante province have chosen not to travel at weekends, particularly on Sundays. The report therefore shows that these latest measures to reduce mobility are working. With a view to trying to reduce the spread of the coronavirus, at the height of the third

wave of the pandemic, new mobility restrictions were put in place and closed off towns including Torrevieja and Orihuela from 3pm on Friday until 6am on Monday. On the first Sunday of the new restrictions, 1,012,673 people did not make any significant journey away from home within the Alicante province. According to the Ministry study, the subsequent Sundays saw 974,127 and 949,766 individuals also choosing to stay at home. The lack of movement is not as evident on Saturdays, but is quite high nonetheless: 881,272 people stayed at home on Saturday January 30, and on subsequent Saturdays the figure hovered at around 850,000. It must be taken into account that a good portion

Spain announces new target groups for vaccination Spanish health officials have defined new priority groups for the coronavirus vaccine. Shortly after several regions began inoculating the 80-and-over population, the public health committee of the National Healthcare System said that next in line for the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are people between 70 and 79 years of age, who will in turn be followed by the 60-to-69 age bracket. This expert committee also decided that the AstraZeneca vaccine, which is being administered to around 5.1 million essential workers (such as teachers and police officers) under 55 years of age, will next target the general population between 45 and 54, as well as any under-60s with preexisting health conditions that

make them especially vulnerable to Covid-19. These medical conditions have not yet been defined, however. What is also unclear is exactly when these new priority groups will get their shots, as this depends on the size of the shipments and the speed of administration in a healthcare system whose resources are already stretched thin. Different regions of Spain are proceeding at different speeds. For now, seven have begun immunizing the 80-and-over population, while most are still working on the Phase 1 priority groups: residents and workers of care facilities, health personnel and people with need for daily assistance who do not live in a care home. Meanwhile, essential

workers under 55 are also getting immunised with the OxfordAstraZeneca vaccine. Although no specific timelines have been announced, the goal is to vaccinate 80% of seniors 80 and over before the end of March, which means administering two doses to around 2.8 million people. But other groups will likely start getting their first jabs before that process ends, to ensure that there are no breaks in the pace of vaccination. Once Spain’s seniors have been immunised, it is hoped that the epidemiological data will change significantly. Right now, eight out of every 10 deaths from Covid-19 are occurring among the elderly. Even if the virus remains in circulation the way it has to date, deaths should decline noticeably.

of the trips that were taken at weekends may have been due to work reasons. The study of mobile phone data has shown that the current situation has definitely curtailed common practices such as going away for the weekend or taking a day trip on a Sunday for example. It is not only the fact that residents of larger municipalities cannot leave. The fact that no one from outside of these cities and large towns can enter also has an impact on local behaviour. The restrictions dictate, for example, that no one can go to Alicante or Benidorm for leisure time at the weekend. Add to this the total closure of the hospitality industry, which can be a decisive factor in choosing to leave the house at the weekend, given that the options for recreation are significantly reduced. Given the circumstances, it is not surprising that the volume of internal movement within the province during the last few Sundays is less than half of what was before the pandemic. According to the report from the Ministry of Transport, Sunday trips are reduced to 45%. On Saturdays there is a little more traffic, but even so the highest number of trips is recorded at around 51% of the usual average. During the week, on Monday through to Friday, internal travel within the province of Alicante is at around 75% of what it was a year ago (the week of February 14th to 20th, 2020 was taken as a point of reference for the study). Journeys between provinces are significantly lower – 60% during the week and on weekends, less than 20% of what they were this time last year.

Date forecast for ‘fourth wave’ of coronavirus The fourth wave of the coronavirus already has a predicted date, and it is closer than many of us may have thought. Prestigious Spanish scientist, Margarita Del Val, was interviewed this week and made a number of predictions about the summer holidays, the fourth wave of Covid, and when she thinks we can leave our masks at home. Virologist, immunologist and prominent researcher at the Severo Ochoa Centre for Molecular Biology (CSIC-UAM), Margarita del Val, remarked that the predicted fourth wave will be "as strong as this one and there will be many older people dying." Del Val made the prediction in an interview this week with Spanish newspaper 20 Minutos and has revealed that she estimates the fourth wave of coronavirus will hit Spain: "perhaps at the end of March." She explained "if we have made plans for Easter, we will not change them, we will meet with people, it will continue to be cold and there will be activity indoors" - a dangerous cocktail for the spread of the virus. The return to normal Asked about when she thinks we can return to "normal", the scientist is not very optimistic. This, she explained, is due to

the rush by administrations to relax restrictions as soon as they detect stabilization of the data or a downward trend in contagion. "As soon as the curve flattens out, we start to de-escalate," says Del Val. In contrast to the actions of the Spanish central and regional governments, the scientist gave the example of Australia and New Zealand that both managed to bring their infections to zero by applying strict quarantines and closing borders as soon as a positive case was detected. "The choice we have made as a society has been to live on the edge, despite the fact that there are many deaths" Summer and beyond With many people’s hopes pinned on a summer vacation, the virologist is more hopeful. This is because the vaccination campaign will be further along and also with good weather and outdoor activities, "the probability of being infected is ten times less." Regarding the obligation to wear a mask, this is closely linked to the progress of the vaccination campaign says Del Val. When the most vulnerable of the population are protected by immunization, it will be possible to reassess what measures need to be taken in terms of wearing masks.

Orihuela requests ‘Blue Path’ status for Cabo Roig

Ángel Noguera, Councillor for Infrastructure, has announced that Orihuela has applied for Sendero Azul (Blue Path) status for the Paseo Cabo Roig, which runs along the coast between La Caleta and Cala Capitán. This municipal initiative is a joint initiative between Miguel Hernández University, the FAOC (Federation of Associations of Orihuela Costa-Alicante) and the Litoral Ecological Institute. Ángel Noguera said: “This initiative is aimed at the recovery of coastal paths to turn them into valuable spaces for environmental education and the development of sustainable activities that bring our visitors

closer to the environmental and heritage values of the surroundings of the Blue Flag beaches.” Luisa Boné, Councillor for Beaches, has expressed her full support, and explained that initiative “was born from the 11 Blue Flags that the 11 beaches of Orihuela have, since it is necessary to have the Blue Flags to be able to progress to the Blue Paths”. The “Paseo Cabo Roig” is of great interest due to the geological materials that make up the cliffs and beaches, as well as its considerable historical and archaeological value, such as the Torre de Cabo Roig, military

watchtower from the 16th Century, listed as a ‘Site of Cultural Interest’. Throughout the entire walk people can enjoy the seascape, from Cabo Roig to La Manga del Mar Menor and Isla Grosa, observing the shadows in the water of the Posidonia Oceánica meadows, as well as the native and endemic vegetation, fauna and flora adapted to the coastal environments, as well as numerous species of seabirds. To this Sendero Azul project, others will be added, such as the Nacimiento River, with the aim of providing the coast with a new attraction to visit Orihuela Costa at any time of the year.

Province registers lowest number of infections since December On Sunday Alicante registered the lowest number of new coronavirus infections since December. In total, according to the latest data update from the Generalitat Valenciana (at time of going to print) there were 253 new positives in the province. This level has not been recorded since an isolated day at the end of last year, just the day after Christmas. The decline in the number of people admitted to hospitals is, however, slower, as there are still 658 in the province, of which 144 are in ICUs. There are already 140,996 people that have been affected by covid in Alicante – which is the figure supported by medical evidence such as testing. The figure is tremendously high (despite the fact it may be underestimated), but there are fewer people adding to it than have been adding to it in recent weeks: especially the 253 new low of positives. Although 26th December was the last day that the province recorded this figure,

in reality we have to go back to October to see this amount of normal and constant daily positives. Between October and February, only five days have shown a lower number of positives. The number of people hospitalised also continues a downward progression, although

In Elche there have been three new outbreaks, all of them of social origin, while in Elda there has been one of these episodes with educational origin and four infections, and in Dolores one of work, with five affected. Across the Vega Baja most new cases come from n work environment. The Valencian Community has registered 644 new cases of coronavirus confirmed by PCR test or through antigen test since the last update, which places the total autonomic figure of positives at 375,034 people. By provinces, the distribution of new positives is as follows: 253 in Alicante -140,996 in total-, 290 in the province of Valencia 195,629 in total- and 100 in Castellón -38,406 in total-. In addition, an unassigned case has been registered, so that the number of unassigned cases is three. In this Sunday update, the Generalitat indicated that it has not been possible to report the number of the deceased and that it will be recovered in the next update.

COVID 19 it does so in a much more subtle way. Currently, according to the Sunday update, there are 658 patients admitted, which is around half the number of those recorded just fifteen days ago. Those admitted to the ICUs of the province are 144, 40 percent less than two weeks ago.

Paseo de La Glea First municipal aid payments made reopens

The Councillor checks the finished area

Ángel Noguera, the Orihuela Councillor for Infrastructure, has announced that the department has completed the repairs to the Paseo de La Glea in Orihuela Costa. These works have been carried out as a result of the terrible damage inflicted by the 2019 DANA. This final phase has taken one month to complete, at a cost of €72,003.28. The projects include: the building of a block wall that gives continuity to the existing one, filling the existing tunnels and paving the promenade, the sidewalks and the road, both in the damaged part and on the existing one. The drinking water fountain and public lighting have been replaced, as have the horizontal and vertical signage and provision of street furniture.

The Councillor explained that the La Glea promenade is once again consistent with the mouth of the Nacimiento River and has pedestrian walkways. The is currently no traffic allowed along the paseo as this is the responsibility of the General Directorate of Coasts of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the body will not allow the city council to reorganise the traffic flow through Avenida de la Adelfas. Ángel Noguera said: “The Orihuela City Council has restored the surroundings of the mouth of the Nacimiento River at La Glea beach. We are liaising with Costas in regard to the repair or replacement of the road to allow traffic flow along the promenade on the Nacimiento River. It was

initially denied because it was in an area of ‘maritime-terrestrial public domain’, but a claim has been filed with a possible dispute if Costas does not allow us to recover the road at the mouth of the Nacimiento River.” The Orihuela City Council stance is based on the special urban planning of the "Campoamor Tourist Centre" approved by a 1969 government decree where this road is located. This planning is prior to the demarcation of the Coasts in that area, and was declared "of public interest", which is why it is estimated that the road and the stretch of promenade should be able to be replaced. At the same time, action has been taken to clean and adapt the banks of the Nacimiento River at its mouth.

The Department of Commerce, led by Víctor Bernabéu, has authorised the first 368 of the municipal aid payments to the self-employed, SMEs and smallbusinesses of the municipality, after its approval by the Local Government Board. The total amount is 402,200 euros and corresponds to the first call for applicants made last September to which there were 462 responses. Councillor Bernabéu said that it was necessary “to carry out a credit modification, due to the contribution of funds by other municipal areas to obtain a total of 400,000 euros plus the contribution of provincial funds”. He said: “Once again I want to reiterate my thanks to my colleagues Rafael Almagro, Almudena Baldó, Víctor Valverde and Mariola Rocamora for their support, for understanding the importance of this aid and the need to make a gesture of support to our entrepreneurs and businessmen in the bad economic situation that we are suffering.” The 94 applications that were left out of this first call, were

found to have debts with the administration or had not correctly presented their claim. However, 24 of them have since benefited from a second opportunity, thanks to the

opening of a new application period. There have been 279 new applications submitted that are currently being processed. In order for the aid to reach everyone who needs it, the Department of Industry and Development contacted any possible beneficiaries informing

them of the reasons that they did not comply and indicating the way to solve the issues. Hopefully, this means all of those requesting aid will receive it. The purpose of the municipal aid programmes is to support the productive and social fabric of the Orihuela municipality. It aims to speed up the necessary compensation for the expenses incurred by the self-employed and SMEs as a consequence of the forced closure of their companies due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the months of April to May 2020.

The businesses benefitting from the financial help have all met the requirements. These include: having suspended activity as a result of the measures adopted by Royal Decree 463/2020, of 14th March, or in the event of continuing activity, having reduced billing by at least 50 percent for the months of April and May 2020. Businesses also had to prove that the activity affected by the closures has not been compensated by an increase in billing through an increase in the volume of online or telephone business.

Climate change to bring more frequent and more violent storms to the Alicante coastline A new book by professors Joan Romero and Jorge Olcina warns that sea temperature here has risen by 1.3 degrees since 1982, three times more than that of the air. The increase in the temperature of the Mediterranean Sea, specifically along the coast of the province of Alicante where during the summer the water reaches maximum temperatures of 28/29 degrees, has become the focus of great concern of scientists studying climate change in the Alicante region. In the last 40 years, the average temperature of the sea off the coast of Alicante has increased by 1.3 degrees. The rise in temperature in the medium and long term will have significant consequences for the busy stretch of coast, where 60% of the provincial population resides. Action is urgently needed, according to climatologist Jorge Olcina, who together with Professor Joan Romero, from the University of València, edited the book “Climate Change in the Mediterranean, processes, risks and policies”; a publication in which experts from a variety of disciplines analyze the consequences of climate change. Olcina says that the warming of the sea has not stopped since 1982, and to address the problem will require taking difficult but necessary action. He explained, “Climate change is going to cause us to have a great maritime storm every two or two and a half years, when 20 years ago they were much less

frequent. They will also be more intense, and not only in the generation of torrential rain, but in the greater intensity of the sea beating against the coast. For this reason, it is urgent that the 2013 Coastal Law be revised, which extended concessions for homes and businesses for up to 75 more years. It is not that the sea level will rise excessively, but it will increase the intensity, strength and frequency of the storms.” Olcina added that we can expect, “A significant increase in atmospheric extremes with episodes of intense rain, and more intense periods of drought, of shorter duration but more frequent in onset. The presence of an increasingly warmer sea in the Mediterranean basin plays a decisive role in these regional manifestations of climate warming.” The increase in sea temperature is, according to Jorge Olcina, a key factor in episodes of instability such as the ‘gota

fria’ and heavy torrential rains over such a short space of time that it is difficult for the land to retain water. The situation, according to the new publication, contrasts with what the current prediction models indicate, which forecast a reduction in ‘normal’ rainfall, decreasing circulation of water in the Júcar and Segura rivers by between 8% and 10%. "The rains will accumulate on the coast and not inland," warns Olcina. In the book, Professors Romero and Olcina analyze climate change, its socioeconomic and territorial impact. The book brings together the diagnosis and the solutions presented by 20 specialists brought together under the framework of a seminar organized by the Prospect Valencian Community 2030 Chair. It aims to provide information to inform both government and citizens in order that we can all take steps to mitigate the effects of change climate in the Mediterranean.

Rescue Centre involved in drugs raid with National Police An emergency call from the National Police recently led to the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre in Rojales being involved in a drug raid operation. Ten tonnes of horse feed had just turned up on an articulated lorry at the centre when the call came through, which co-founders Sue and Rod Weeding had to deal with before racing off to assist the police and recover seven horses. The couple said they received a desperate and urgent call from the authorities who had smashed a drug operation in Almoradi. As National Police carried out the operation, searching and seizing items from the property, they discovered there were seven horses on site at the raid which had to be removed from the premises. A court order was issued for them to be put into the care of the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre and whilst the couple say they will always do what they can to assist the police and give horses a safe haven, the situation once again highlights the need for the Rescue Centre to receive official and regualr government funding, “This isn't the first time that the National Police have called us out to rescue equines, we have taken horses in from all over the country at the request of the police.” Sue explained. “If we had said no, the police would have had a huge

problem because the animals have to leave the premises as everything is being legally seized. What the outcome will be, I don't know but they have been put into our care and custody and as always we have to find the money to keep these animals and we get no funding. “It's just so important that the public understands the work we are doing. We are working with the police and yet we are still getting no financial support. These horses cannot be re-homed

under the court order and we need some sort of funding from the councils and government.” Sue added that three of the horses are with the Centre’s equine vet, and whilst not being able to comment too much on the ongoing police case she noted that all seemed very well cared for. “There is never a dull moment for us!” she added. For more information on the work the Rescue Centre does or to make a donation, visit website www.easyhorsecare.net

Spanish property sales slump Spain’s National Statistics Institute has confirmed what everyone had already guessed; 2020 was a bad year for buying and selling a property in Spain. The country’s property market had already experienced a drop of 2.4 percent in buying and selling properties in 2019, but nowhere near the 17.7 percent fall seen across 2020, which is the largest drop since 2011. The annual total of 415,748 property transactions in 2020 was around 90,000 lower than the previous year. The last time property sales were this low in Spain was in 2016 when there were only 405,000 sales carried out. Foreigners bought 46,300 properties in Spain in 2020, a 26.5 percent fall compared to 2019's figures. Although the figures are dramatic, the drop in property purchase agreements of 17.7 percent is not as spectacular as that seen in 2008 when the global financial crisis sent even bigger shockwaves through Spain’s real estate market with a fall of 29 percent in just one year. Brits continued to be the foreign nationals buying the most properties in Spain with 6,043 purchases (2,715 fewer than in 2019), followed by French nationals (3,777 properties, 1,153 fewer) and Germans (3,589 properties, 885 fewer).

None of us need experts to explain the reasons behind the slump; the global pandemic left most countries in lockdown at some point and resulted in various travel restrictions. There was economic instability as people lost their jobs or were furloughed. And even when none of the above were in effect potential buyers were wary of leaving the safety of their homes and interacting with estate agents and private sellers. Both new builds and secondhand homes have been equally affected. However, according to Spain’s leading property portal Idealista, 2021 will see a return to normal sales figures. Big regional differences All of Spain’s autonomous communities saw a drop in sales but the regions with the highest rate of properties sold in 2020 were Valencia (1,469 per 100,000 inhabitants), La Rioja (1,306 per 100,000) and Murcia (1,258 per

100,000). Alicante was the Spanish province with the highest rate of property sales per inhabitant in the whole country, 35 percent of which were bought up by foreigners. However, it’s generally the regions that are popular with foreign visitors that have seen the biggest drops in sales, even though in Valencia’s case their rate of property sale per inhabitant is still the highest in Spain. By contrast, the smallest changes to the property market in 2020 were recorded in Extremadura (-6.5 percent ) and Asturias (-9 percent). In terms of total numbers rather than rates per inhabitant, Andalusia was the Spanish region with the most housing operations last year, with 83,760 purchases, followed by Catalonia (65,064), Valencia (58,745) and Madrid (56,723).

Alternative residency proof for expats returning from UK The British Embassy in Madrid has published an update on travel to Spain for UK nationals who were already legal residents of the country before 1st January, 2021, when the Brexit transition period came to an end and the UK definitively left the European Union. “We are aware that some of you who were legally living in Spain before 1st January, 2021 have faced difficulty returning to Spain from the UK, as you don’t yet have a residence document (green certificate or Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero - TIE),” said the embassy in a statement on its Facebook page. The embassy has shared a list of alternative documents that UK nationals without either one of these two proofs of residency may use instead. “If you are resident in Spain, you should carry your residence document (the green paper EU residence certificate or the new TIE), as well as your valid passport when you travel,” notes the embassy. The list of acceptable documents, which have reportedly been communicated to airlines and other operators, is as follows: • Residence card issued under Article 18.4 of the Withdrawal Agreement (the TIE – Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) • Temporary or permanent EU

residence certificate (Certificado de Registro de Ciudadanos de la Unión) Receipt of application for the TIE (Resguardo de presentación de la solicitud de la tarjeta de residencia) Confirmation of the positive outcome of your residence application (Resolución favorable por la que se concede la tarjeta de residencia) In the absence of any of the above documents, other documents that credibly evidence your legal residence in Spain before 1st January, 2021, such as a padrón certificate (issued by your town hall), a work contract, a rental contract, or proof of property purchase In the case of students, documentation that

demonstrates enrolment in an on-site or in-person course and proof of accommodation In addition, travellers must show a valid passport and comply with the other documentation requirements, such as a negative COVID test within 72 hours of arrival. Restrictions extended to 2nd March On 22nd December, Spain introduced travel restrictions on passenger travel from the UK by air and sea, after a new and apparently more contagious strain of the coronavirus was identified in the UK. These measures have been extended repeatedly, and are now set to last until 6pm mainland Spain time on 2nd March.

Over 20 arrests as police bust massive cocaine ring National Police seized 34 kilos of cocaine and more than 200,000 euros in cash in a series of searches carried out as part of an operation to dismantle a drug organization also said to be involved in cockfighting. National Police have dealt a massive blow to a network of drug traffickers that operated in Alicante and Murcia with the arrest of at least 22 people, the dismantling of a cocaine laboratory in a warehouse in Almoradí and the seizure of 34 kilos of cocaine, more than 200,000 euros in cash and a quantity weapons. The drugs, cash and guns were uncovered during several searches carried out across the Vega Baja and Aspe, as well as in the Murcian towns of Molina de Segura and Águilas. The operation was headed up

by the Drugs and Organized Crime Unit (central UDYCO) with collaboration of the Police units from Orihuela, Alicante and Murcia. Alleged to be the head of the criminal organisation is a man known to police as El Chato. The suspected crime boss lives in a chalet on the outskirts of Aspe and is known to local security forces for alleged cockfighting and drug trafficking. However, sources close to the investigation indicated that never before has El Chato been found with such a quantity of drugs. Police revealed they turned El Chato’s property upside down during the search – he was not at home at the time of the operation. Officers found more than 12 kilos of cocaine buried in the area where he housed his roosters. His partner and another relative were arrested during the

raid early on Wednesday morning. The latter was said to be carrying a shotgun when police arrived. The cocaine laboratory was discovered in a warehouse in Almoradí, where police seized more than 16 kilos of cocaine as well as chemicals used in the cutting process. Police also conducted searches in Albatera, Águilas and Molina de Segura. In the Region of Murcia they arrested at least two more people, one with half a kilo and another with five kilos of a substance that tested positive for cocaine. Those arrested were all brought to appear in front of a judge in Orihuela. 14 were freed; seven were sent to prison without bail while the alleged gang leader’s wife was released with bail.

The risk of missing routine eye exams Specsavers Ópticas is urging people to make their eye health a top priority amid growing concern that symptom-free conditions are going undetected during the pandemic. Mike Stone, a store director at two Costa Blanca Specsavers Ópticas stores, says: ‘There is a genuine concern that some people may have a symptom-free condition that has gone undetected because they failed to attend a pre-booked sight test. We estimate that approximately 7,500 Specsavers Ópticas customers forwent their sight test last year due to lockdown restrictions . Our stores remain open for appointments, with a series of hygiene and personal protection measures in place to ensure a safe and reassuring experience. We would urge those who have not seen an optician in more than two years to book an appointment as a matter of urgency.’ ‘We recently detected a case of glaucoma in a customer who was experiencing no symptoms, but was at risk of irreversible blindness if the glaucoma progressed. He was very surprised that there was an issue, as he hadn’t noticed a

change in his vision, which is very common. Using a combination of tests, we were able to identify possible glaucoma at its very early stages and refer the customer to a specialist who could prescribe drops to reduce the pressure and stop any damage being done to his eye.

This recent referral is an excellent example of the importance of eye tests. Millions of people around the world are living with eye conditions that increase their risk of sight-loss such as agerelated macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma. Many of these conditions do not have symptoms in the early stages and so patients are not aware of the problem until irreversible damage has been done. However, the good news is that fifty percent of sight loss is

avoidable with early detection, which is why Specsavers Ópticas urging customers to continue to attend their scheduled appointment and make sure that they visit the optician for an eye test every two years. ‘As

an essential service, opticians are not affected by travel restrictions and we are open to provide the full breadth of optical services to customers. We are absolutely committed to making sure that everyone is taken care of in the best possible way, both in the test rooms and in the rest of the store. That’s why there are restrictions on the number of customers in the store at any one time, and we’ve introduced the highest hygiene and personal protection measures. Our number one priority is the safety and wellbeing of all our customers and colleagues, so every measure that we have taken is designed to put safety first. Please request an appointment in advance to help with social distancing.’ To request an appointment and find your nearest store log on to specsavers.es/stores. Investment Jitters? Investors could be forgiven for being a little on edge. Financial markets have been on a rollercoaster ride for the past year.

As banks are offering all time low returns, where else can you put your money to get a decent return?

The value of the UK's biggest 100 companies has plunged by a fifth – with sectors such as leisure, tourism and some retail businesses on their knees.

Part of the stress of investing can be watching financial markets swinging this way and that – and trying to work out how to react.

There are likely to be more stomach-lurching moments ahead as the Europe-wide lockdowns take their toll along with the fallout from the No Deal Brexit.

There are thousands of products on the market that can take advantage of the stock market whilst balancing returns against risk. The best way forward is to make sure you don’t put all your eggs in one basket.

There are a number of financial advisers on the Costa Blanca so the question is “why choose Seagate?” I believe that we offer a unique service to our clients. We have a fully staffed local office in Benijofar with a back-up admin team, a Client Account Manager and a Relationship Manager. This means that we have a team that will support you with six monthly reviews of your investment or pension and we provide full administration for withdrawals, encashments and tax guidance. Do not delay making a decision, call us today.

But for investors who can live with market volatility, the next few months could present some good opportunities.

If you are looking for help, then the team at Seagate Wealth are on hand to advise you every step of the way.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP The pound was among the front-runner currencies throughout the week, leading the pack and strengthening by an average of 1.3% after a dramatic Friday which saw sterling scuff the 1.40 mark against the US dollar. This break above 1.40 was the highest sterling has been against the US dollar since April 2018. The pound has been steadily climbing since falling below 1.15 in March 2020, and has enjoyed over 20% appreciation in less than a year. This has mainly been attributed to the current success of the UK’s vaccination programme, and post-Brexit uncertainty fading. Another catalyst for the move surrounds FX flows, which ordinarily would filter to the euro when exiting the US dollar. However, these are now moving toward the pound with Europe’s postCovid recovery continuing to look rocky in comparison to the other side of the Channel. The UK economic data headed in a different direction to the pound though. Although last Friday’s figures for fourth quarter growth were better than expected, with GDP expanding by a quarterly 1%, the same could not be said of production or December’s trade deficit. Inflation was higher than expected in January, with the headline CPI rate edging higher from 0.6% to 0.7%, but was not enough to alter expectations for a protracted period of near-zero UK interest rates. This Friday’s retail sales data for January were always going to look horrid, given the mandated closure of hospitality venues and unnecessary shops. With that in mind, investors only briefly

marked sterling down when the predicted 2.5% monthly decline materialised as an actual 8.2% plunge. EURO The euro lost an average of 0.3% and gave up a cent and three quarters to sterling, no doubt from the different vaccine rollouts mentioned above. However, confidence is up in Europe, so it wasn’t a bad week for the euro.An unusually low-profile week threw up few headlines, economic or political, from the Eurozone. The confirmation of Mario Draghi as Italy’s prime minister might have had more impact had it not been widely expected for so long. Investors do still see significant potential upside for Italy with Draghi at the helm, and his presence has already pushed down government borrowing costs. But Italy is only a part of Euroland, and the other parts had little to say for themselves. Investors were also upbeat about Eurozone economic data, seeing similar improvement in sentiment among German and Eurozone institutional investors. ZEW’s survey reported economic sentiment in Germany rising by more than nine points to 71. In the Eurozone, it went up by the same amount to 69.6. Although neither was a record high, they were not a mile adrift, and both were well ahead of forecast. The theoreticallyimportant Eurozone data for gross domestic product and employment were close to forecast, and therefore had minimal impact. GDP fell by an estimated 6.8% in 2020 as a whole.

Zara dog Not content with just dressing humans, Spain's largest and most world-famous fashion empire has started a new clothing line for pets. As well as collars, leads and pup-beds, dogs can now strut about the streets of Spain in the latest New Zealand rugs to protect them from the cold and rain, bomber jackets for extra padding, or cotton scarves and jackets to shield them from the heat, thanks to the new Zara range for the furry members of the family. Dogs shown on Zara's new online catalogue showcasing justreleased designs are all family pets of the human models presenting the high-street store's seasonal range for bipeds, and creators behind the scenes said the pooches were very 'content', 'well-behaved', 'relaxed', and generally just enjoying the attention. The fact their own humans were their handlers during the photo-shoot meant they were completely at ease, the team reveals. Pet outfits from the most global brand owned by the fashion empire Inditex vary in price from around €9.95 for 'doggie-bag bags' – so you don't

have to stuff your pockets with plastic pouches for poocollection when out walking – through to around €25.95 for a padded coat. Many of the new pooch pieces are in similar colour schemes, patterns and fabric as the women's, men's and children's

collections, so fashion-conscious dogs can make sure that their human accessory complements their own look. Shopping in style The new range to hit the 'dogwalk' comes just four months after Zara launched its collection of pull-along shopping trolleys, in a bid to keep on selling at a time when nobody was buying. With lockdowns and restrictions on movement and trade, home-working being advised wherever feasible, the average consumer in Spain has had no real need to buy new

clothes since the start of the pandemic as there are few places they can go to wear them – but supermarket trips will always be necessary, and buying larger grocery hauls cuts down on the need to leave the house for those who are wary. To this end, a large, padded, waterproof trolley with an ample front pocket is a handy addition – as the designer brand based in Pedreguer, northern Alicante province, knew it would be. Zara's trolley comes in grey or beige, costing €49.95 each, and sold out within days of their release, but stocks have since been replenished. Pull-along trolleys are not just an elderly ladies' accessory in Spain – they come in all patterns and colours and are used by all ages; in fact, smaller versions are very popular among school children who use them to lug their textbooks to class every day. Zara has also created a line of fold-up cloth bags with a pouch to stuff them in, to add a bit of flair to the grocery run which standard plastic supermarket carriers tend to lack – you can get them in navy-blue with daisies, olive-and-white checked, or blue, white and maroon, for €12.95 each.

Spain spends six hours a day online, two on social media Eight in 10 people in Spain use social media every day, and are connected for a total of two hours, according to the latest worldwide research into online habits. Hootsuite and We Are Social have just released their 10th annual report, Digital 2021, which reveals that 4.2 billion people have at least one social media profile kept active – nearly six in 10 of the earth's inhabitants, or about 56.5 percent of the planet's population. Unsurprisingly, last year, with its various lockdowns and restrictions on meeting people in person, social media use rose sharply – by 13 percent around the world, or 490 million new users. In fact, 15 people register on a social media platform for the first time every second. Digital 2021, given that it is an annual comparison, may not necessarily reflect a permanent or even long-term change in trends – with many workers temporarily laid off, family and friends unable to see each other and shops, bars, restaurants and leisure facilities shut or severely restricted, the amount of time a typical human spent in front of a screen of any size will have been much greater on average for 2020 than for 2019. In Spain, nearly 43 million people use the internet – out of a population of 47 million – and spend an average of six

hours and 11 minutes a day online. A total of 80 percent use social media daily, for an average of two hours a day. Across the board, around 45 percent of people on earth aged between 16 and 64 inclusive use social media for brand information, and around 40 percent use it for work or work-related factors. In Spain, the most-used social media platform is WhatsApp, with 89.5 percent of surfers availing themselves of it daily. YouTube is very close behind, with 89.3 percent of those with internet access using it every day. Facebook is used daily by 79.2 percent of surfers, and Instagram by 69 percent. Applications most often employed in Spain are messaging or chat (96 percent), social media applications (95 percent), and video and entertainment (81 percent). A total of 57 percent of internet-users in Spain have made video-calls at least once, 53 percent have scanned QR codes, and 34 percent have used their phones to watch TV programmes. According to Digital 2021, nearly 94 percent of internet-users go online via their mobile phones, and preferred browsers are Chrome (72 percent), Safari (14 percent) and FireFox (5 percent). As for content, 95 percent of Spanish internet-users watch videos online, 62 percent listen to music via streaming

and 46 percent listen to podcasts. How does Spain compare with the rest of the world? Worldwide, 2020 saw people spending an average of six hours and 54 minutes a day on the internet – a total of 4.66 billion, or almost six in 10, people on earth are surfers - of whom 63 percent use it to search for information, 56 percent to connect with friends and family, and 55 percent to keep up to date by browsing news and events. Also internationally, nearly 91 percent of internet-users watch videos online, 73 percent listen to music via streaming platforms, 51 percent watch videoblogs, 47 percent listen to the radio online, and 44 percent listen to podcasts. Nearly 99 percent use their phones to access social media, spending a daily average of two hours and 25 minutes on these sites, with Facebook the mostused, followed by YouTube and then

WhatsApp. Men are more active on social media, with 54 percent of users being male and 46 percent female. At present, 5.22 billion people worldwide use a mobile phone and spend an average of four hours and 10 minutes a day on them, of which 92 percent is via Apps and 8 percent on internet browsers. Online shopping has also reached the overwhelming majority of internetusers: 81 percent have searched for a

product or service with a view to buying, 90 percent have visited an online shop, and 77 percent have bought something online, of whom 55 percent used their phones to do so. It comes as no shock to find out that in terms of most common online purchases in 2020, spending on travel, accommodation and holidays fell by more than 50 percent, whilst sales of cosmetics, toiletries and groceries via internet rose the most.

Brexit Uncertainty: How to Plan for the Future as an Expat As of the 31stof December2020, Britain has officially left the European Union. Understandably, this is causing much uncertainty for expats. British expats living in Europe are still unsure of what life will be like in this new post-Brexit world. With more than 300,000 Brits formally registered as living in Spain, many are worried about how Brexit will affect their right to work, pension and healthcare. Since the referendum took place in 2016, it has caused many expats to rightfully question the future, how can they prepare for life abroad now that Britain has left the European Union? One way you can prepare for the future is with an Avalon funeral plan. It’s probably the last thing you want to think about when you’re enjoying your life in the sun but planning ahead for your funeral is something all British expats in Spain should do. Protect love ones from unfamiliar procedures Traditional Spanish funerals happen as quickly as 24 to 48 hours after the person passes away. Funerals for British expats can take longer to organise. But beware – this delay could cost your loved ones hundreds of Euros in extra mortuary expenses, which are most often charged by the day. In addition, it’s common practice for Funeral Directors in Spain to request either part or full payment upfront. That means your next of kin might have to pay hundreds or thousands of Euros before the funeral can take place.

Is my money protected? Yes. All money paid into an Avalon funeral plan is held separately to the company in an independent UK trust. The trust is managed by independent trustees, so you can rest assured that your money is completely safe and secure and you will get the funeral you paid for when the time comes. Will Brexit affect the features of my Avalon funeral plan? No. Brexit will have no impact on the features of our range of expat funeral plans. Each plan has been specially designed to suit the needs of expats living abroad. The features and benefitsof our expat funeral plans will remain the same regardless of Brexit. Our plans are also valid in both the UK and the European countries we operate in, so whether you decide to remain abroad or come back to the UK, your plan is valid in both countries. I’m moving back to the UK, what do I need to do? If you decide to move back to the UK, it’s simple to transfer your plan over. All you need to do is call up our friendly Englishspeaking customer services team who will be able to update your address and issue you with a new certificate. We willreallocate your plan to one of our trusted, local Funeral Directors near your UK address. Don’t worry, this will all be done free of charge. Why choose Avalon Funeral Plans? You know you’re in good hands with

Avalon. We were voted Best Funeral Plan Provider and the Personal Finance Awards for two years running. Not only that, but we are also the fastest-growing provider of funeral plans across Spain & the Canaries, Portugal and Cyprus and the most trusted funeral plan provider on Trustpilot, with more than 2,500 reviews from real customers and a 5-star excellent rating.

Ride Along

This Week´s Movie Picks About Time

Saturday 27th February – ITV2, 10.00 pm

Sunday 28th February – Channel 5, 11.50 pm

Ben must prove he is good enough to date cop James' sister. By doing this he goes on a "Ride Along" to show that he is not weak and he will do whatever it takes to get James' approval but along the way runs into a few obstacles that he has to overcome in a very funny way.

At the age of 21, Tim Lake (Domhnall Gleeson) discovers he can travel in time... The night after another unsatisfactory New Year party, Tim's father (Bill Nighy) tells his son that the men in his family have always had the ability to travel through time. Tim can't change history, but he can change what happens and has happened in his own life-so he decides to make his world a better place...by getting a girlfriend. Sadly, that turns out not to be as easy as you might think. Moving from the Cornwall coast to London to train as a lawyer, Tim finally meets the beautiful but insecure Mary (Rachel McAdams). They fall in love, then an unfortunate time-travel incident means he's never met her at all. So they meet for the first time again-and again-but finally, after a lot of cunning time-traveling, he wins her heart. Tim then uses his power to create the perfect romantic proposal, to save his wedding from the worst best-man speeches, to save his best friend from professional disaster and to get his pregnant wife to the hospital in time for the birth of their daughter, despite a nasty traffic jam outside Abbey Road. But as his unusual life progresses, Tim finds out that his unique gift can't save him from the sorrows and ups and downs that affect all families, everywhere. There are great limits to what time travel can achieve, and it can be dangerous too.

Ultraprocessed foods to bin right now ‘Ultra-processed’ foods are pretty much exactly what they sound like: processed foods that contain additives - like hydrogenated oils, artificial flavours, and emulsifiers - with long names you don't recognise. The researchers also found that these ultra-processed foods account for 90 percent of the added sugar we consume, increasing our risk for obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. Experts are constantly stressing the importance of cleaning up our diets and there is one relatively simple way to avoid excessive added sugar - not replacing real food with ultra-processed food and drink products. Here are some of the worst ultraprocessed foods in your cupboard right now, and healthier versions you can buy or make at home instead. Crisps The most notorious offenders are brands that contain artificial flavours, colours, and preservatives. (That means anything neon-orange is out.) Your best bet is a basic kettle chip with just three simple ingredients: potatoes, olive or sunflower oil, and salt. Other good options include organic corn chips and popcorn, which are low in calories, high in fibre, and packed with antioxidants. Or better yet, go the DIY route. Baked kale chips are easy to make, as are ovenroasted sweet potato chips.

Oprah to interview Meghan and Harry

that diet fizzies have zero nutritional value, they contains artificial sweeteners like aspartame, saccharin, and sucralose, and has been linked to headaches, depression, and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. If you can't get used to plain old H2O, opt for sparkling or flavoured water. Just be sure to choose one that contains only carbonated water and natural flavours.

Packaged snack cakes Those plastic-wrapped cakes that seem to last forever in your pantry are packed with sugar and preservatives (hence their longevity). Whipping up your own sweet treats is a much better option. You can use a nutrient-rich alternative to white flour, such as chickpea or almond flour, and also cut back on sugar and butter with healthier substitutions. Try replacing half of the sugar in the recipe with pureed fruit (mashed bananas and date paste both work well); and swapping each tablespoon of butter with a half tablespoon of avocado. Diet fizzy drinks Yes, you've heard it before. But seriously, it's time to ditch your diet drink stash once and for all. Besides the fact

Frozen pizza Sadly, there doesn't seem to be a minimally-processed version of premade pizza. The best alternative is making your own. Even using shopbought dough and adding you own toppings is a better alternative. Certain breads You already know to avoid ultraprocessed white bread in favour of fibrerich whole grain breads that offer healthy perks. But picking the right loaf can be tricky because even healthy-seeming varieties can contain additives. Bread is one of those foods where reading the ingredient list is really very important. In general look for a whole grain or glutenfree, or even grain-free bread that doesn't have any artificial additives or preservatives. When in doubt, check the frozen foods section as some of the healthiest breads need to be frozen because they don't contain any preservatives.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have agreed to talk to Oprah for the first time since their exit from the royal family in 2019.The uncovering of the upcoming explosive interview followed less than 24 hours after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex revealed that their son Archie is due to become a big brother. The couple announced the news by releasing a black and white photograph of them posing in the grass where you can see expectant Meghan, 39, clearly cupping her baby bump. The couple will open up to Meghan’s good friend Oprah during an intimate tell-all chat covering everything from expecting baby number two, to their relationship and of course, leaving the royal family. America’s TV network CBS will air the much talked about interview between Harry, Meghan and TV host Oprah, who was a guest at their 2018 wedding. CBS have announced that the interview is

set to air on Sunday 7th March at 8pm (US time). Currently it’s not been said which UK channels will broadcast the interview, but US network, CBS has agreed to release the footage for “global distribution”. The primetime chat between the three famous faces will last 90 minutes and although Harry will sit in front of the cameras with his wife, the interview will mainly focus on Meghan. In a statement CBS claimed that The Duchess of Sussex opened up to Oprah in "a wide-ranging interview covering everything from stepping into life as a royal, marriage, motherhood and philanthropic work, to how she is handling life under intense public pressure." "Later, the two are joined by Prince Harry,” the statement continued. “And they speak about their move to the United States and their future hopes and dreams for their expanding family."

Lowest Calorie Alcoholic Drinks It’s more than understandable to want to kick back with a drink at the end of a long day, especially after you have one of those days. And while there’s no shame in that game, it’s easy to forget about those liquid calories you’re sipping. Unfortunately, they can add up fast especially if you’re drinking regularly. And, before you know it, you’ve sabotaged the healthy eating plan you’ve laid out for yourself and those hard won results from your New Year fitness regime. Pared-down margarita Margaritas can be calorie bombs thanks to the use of lots of sugar and triple sec. Pre-made mixers can also be an issue due to high sugar content. To get around that use fresh lime juice, tequila, and a dash of honey or stevia on the rocks. You’ll keep the sugar and calories down. Want to add some nutrients to the mix? Add avocado, mango and orange juice for a big dose of essential vitamins and minerals that help fight wrinkles and cancer. Calorie count: 95 cals Gin & Tonic A gin and tonic is a classic combination, but it can pack up to 142 calories per serving. Why? Tonic water is generally made with high-fructose corn

syrup, the same sweetener that’s found in cola - and a 12-ounce can of tonic contains eight teaspoons of added sugar. Adding soda water or light tonic to a cocktail is always a great choice since it provides zero calories and zero grams of sugar. Calorie count: 97 cals Red wine Yes, small amounts of alcohol, including red wine, can be a part of a healthy lifestyle. But are you sabotaging yourself with a heavy-handed pour? It's all too easy, and common, to consume too much. But, sticking with the proper serving size - 5 ounces - and having just one glass of wine in a sitting will help keep calories down. It’s a good choice in terms of calories, go for drier varietals like sangiovese, cabernet sauvignon and pinot noir. These tend to be lower in sugar and calories. Calorie count: 125 cals White Wine A glass of chilled white wine can be totally refreshing during this hectic time of year, but pick the type you sip on carefully. Dry white wines, such as a sauvignon blanc or pinot grigio, tend to have lower sugar content, which translates to fewer calories. Sweeter varieties like Riesling could have closer to 165 calories per serving.

And, again, serving size matters. You want to strive for five ounces which, is a smaller pour than most of us do. Calorie count: 121 cals Light beer Beer’s often thought of as the ultimate bloat-bringer, but it may not be all that bad. In one study of over 70,000 women, researchers found that those who drank moderate amounts of beer had lower blood pressure than those who drank wine or spirits. Beers contain several B vitamins. A 12-ounce beer also packs more calcium, magnesium, and selenium, which is a key antioxidant, than a serving of wine. The regular version will set you back closer to 160 calories per 12 ounces. Many beers don’t list calories on their labels, so look for a beer that has an alcohol by volume of four and you’ll be getting about 100 calories for a 12 ounce serving.

Calorie count: 100 cals Mojito A mojito is a combo of muddled mint leaves, rum, and soda water, with sugar. You want to strive for a six-ounce serving with this one. Just know this: If you get your mojito from a restaurant or bar, it may be a bit bigger than that. Also, scaling back on how much sugar you use, or swapping in a sweetener like stevia for regular sugar, can help cut back on calories. Calorie count: 143 cals Vodka Soda Sure, it’s a little basic, but a vodka soda may be your healthiest choice if you’re in the mood for hard alcohol. When you combine a shot of vodka with soda or light tonic, you skirt excess calories and a nasty hangover. Soda water or club soda is calorie-free since it’s just bubbly water. It’s also a good cocktail mixer because it hydrates and contains no added sugars or artificial sweeteners. Plus, the bubbles may slow you down so you don’t glup the drink. Calorie count: 97 cals

Gogglebox stars top Channel 4 show's rich list Gogglebox will be back on our screens next Friday as the Channel 4 series returns for a brand new season. Friday nights will once again be dominated by the Channel 4 show, with new episodes airing from 26th February onwards. The Gogglebox episodes will drop at 9pm and bring back all of our favourite cast members - including Ellie and Izzy Warner, the two sisters from Leeds. And it turns out the Yorkshire duo are

actually top of the rich list of the Channel 4 show, thanks to their social media accounts. The duo could be making an eye-watering £1,137.64 per post on Instagram, according to new research. Food allergy deaths have decreased Food allergy deaths have decreased in the last 20 years, but scientists have warned about continued risks for children and young adults. Scientists at Imperial College London analysed hospital admissions for food-induced anaphylaxis – a severe allergic reaction – between 1998 and 2018. The results showed that despite an increase in hospitalisations, the number of deaths has dropped. Between 1998 and 2018, hospitalisations for food-induced anaphylaxis rose by more than 5 percent per year. In 1998, 0.7 per cent of people admitted to hospital with food-induced anaphylaxis died. By 2018, that figure had dropped to 0.3 percent. The study’s authors suggested this may be because of better awareness of food allergies and improved treatment. It is estimated that nearly two million people in the UK suffer with food allergies. Symptoms of allergic reactions can be mild, including an itching sensation inside the mouth, ears and throat, a rash, and facial swelling. Sufferers in some cases experience anaphylaxis, which can be fatal. However, deaths from anaphylaxis are rare. The researchers estimated there are fewer than 10 fatalities caused by food allergies per year in the UK.

Although the low fatality rate is good news, the study’s authors urged vigilance when it comes to cow’s milk. The researchers found that cow’s milk is the most common cause of fatal foodinduced allergic reaction in school-aged children. Vigilance with cow’s milk The study’s lead author, Dr Paul Turner from Imperial’s National Lung and Heart Institute, said: “There is now a lot of awareness of allergies to peanut and tree nut, but many people think milk allergy is mild, perhaps because most children outgrow it.” “However, for those who don’t, it remains a big problem because milk is so common in our diet, and people don’t realise how dangerous it can be.” Sushma Acharya, of the Food Standards Agency, said the findings also showed that young adults are most atrisk from “severe and fatal” allergic reactions to foods. Acharya encouraged young people to ask for allergen information when ordering food.

Spiteful sister Last September my boyfriend and I got engaged. This year has been difficult because of the virus but we decided to go ahead and put a bit of enjoyment into our lives. My sister, who has always been spiteful towards me did not congratulate me, nor did her boyfriend - not a word - she didn't even address it or ask to look at my ring. I let it pass. Then we had a party for a few friends and family. Normally my sister would bake and decorate a cake for every occasion going, but for my engagement party she did not. Again I let it go. She managed to buy us a present of a cheap wooden rolling pin! Again I ignored it. Last week my sister got engaged to her boyfriend. We were both at my Mum's and she thrust her hand in front of my face to show off her ring. I was big enough to look at her ring for a good while and congratulate them both. Then, because old feelings were boiling up, I said, 'but you haven't seen my ring have you?', and I showed her mine. Things were left like that, but I heard from my brother that I'd behaved badly when I apparently 'took away her limelight' and ´upstaged her´ by showing her my own ring. No one seems to be on my side. I'd have let it go, but this is not the first time that my sister has behaved towards me. I’ve truly never done her any harm as I’m not that kind of person. She’s jealous, plain and simple. It’s classic passive aggressive behaviour denying you your moment when you got engaged. Personally I would leave people like this to their own devices even if they are relatives. Just be civil when you are in their company and leave it at that. I am a great believer in not playing peoples games. WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. A PSEUDONYM WILL BE USED IF YOU WISH. SARA READS ALL LETTERS AND CAN GIVE A PERSONAL REPLY. 7 in 10 would consider electric car, but charging and prices are still a concern A recent survey found that 7 in 10 adults with a valid driving licence would be interested in getting an electric vehicle (EV) at some point in the future, but charging and prices remain a concern for buyers. 31% of those surveyed say they would consider getting (27%), or plan to get

(4%), an electric vehicle the next time they purchase or lease a vehicle. More public fast-charging stations would help convince them that an EV is the right choice. When asked what was holding them back, nearly 5 in 10 drivers said “not enough public charging stations.” And, when asked what policy

action they would like to see introduced, the top answer was to see “Public charging stations along motorways”, a move that would most likely increase their interest in purchasing or leasing an EV. “Drivers are used to plentiful gas stations, and may not realize that if they have a personal garage or driveway, they’ll be doing most of their charging at home,” explained Chris Harto from Consumer Reports, the researchers behind the survey. “Even though our research shows that the typical driver would do as little as 6 stops at a public charging station per year, a more robust network of fast-charging stations would help alleviate buyers concerns about switching to an electric vehicle.” More than 7 in 10 drivers also agreed that carmakers should make a wider variety of vehicle types (like SUVs and pickups) available as plug-in electric models. There are currently no electric full-size SUVs or electric pickups on the market. “One of the big benefits for consumers of going electric are the overall cost savings,” Harto says, claiming that carmakers “...should use their marketing muscle to educate consumers about electric vehicles, including their fuel and maintenance savings and great performance.”

Airbags for Motorcyclists Campaign TheAsociación Nacional de Empresas del Sector de Dos Ruedas (Anesdor), an association which is formed of companies working in the two-wheeled motoring sector, along with the Real Automóvil Club de España (RACE), have launched a campaign which focusses on the use of airbags for motorcyclists. The campaign, accompanied by the hashtag #PonteUnAirbag, aimsto raise awareness among motorcycle and moped users of the advantages of wearing a vest or a jacket with an airbag. In an accompanying website, created for the campaign, you can find all the information about these systems: advantages, experience of competition riders, how it is activated, what types of airbag vests and jackets exist, how are the impact studies or how they are homologated. As both RACE and Anesdor have underlined in the presentation ceremony, motorcyclists are vulnerable users in traffic and their road safety should be a "priority" on the social agenda. For this reason, the jackets with airbags have stood out, which protect the torso, vital organs, and the cervical area in the event of an accident. This campaign has had the collaboration of the general director of Traffic, Pere Navarro, the president of Dorna, the company in charge of organizing the world motorcycling championships and with the image of the motorcycling champion Jorge Martínez Aspar. Among the conclusions, it stands out that seven out of ten respondents know

about motorcycle airbags, but only 4% use them regularly, 5% occasionally and 91% have never used these protection elements, has lamented the president of RACE, Carmelo Sanz. The general secretary of Anesdor, José María Riaño, has highlighted the "great importance" of the airbag for motorcyclists, "an accessible reality in the market that has great potential to reduce injuries in the event of an accident". Airbag protection The RACE in support of this campaign has produced a study in which the effectiveness, in an impact test, of three different types of airbags for motorcyclists has been propagated. In all three cases, the airbag deployed before the manikin hit the vehicle (in less than 120 milliseconds). Deceased motorcyclists In the words of Pere Navarro, during 2020 there were 870 deaths on all roads. Over the weekend in Spain there were more than 900 from coronavirus ... which gives an idea of the magnitude of the dramas. The DGT will not use 2020 as a road safety reference because it has been very rare. But in 2019, 416 motorcyclists died, 11 percent more than in 2018, and since 2014, the number of victims has

increased every year, and 220 of them on a secondary road, most of them on weekends, off the road, with somewhat old motorcycles. Motorcycles in Spain are 19 percent of vehicles and 27 percent of accidents, hence the interest of the DGT in improving the safety of motorcyclists. Bikers opinion The RACE has prepared a survey, with 1,330 online interviews of drivers over 18 years of age, conducted between July 14 and 22 of last year. In it, 7 out of 10 respondents are aware of the existence of motorcycle airbags. Regarding which systems with airbags are, jackets are the best known to motorcyclists, with 3 out of 4 motorists knowing these garments, followed by neck protectors with airbags with 61% and harnesses with airbags with the same. We have seen how 3 out of 4 motorcyclists know about the protective jacket with incorporated airbag, but only 4% of those surveyed use them regularly or always, so the level of use of these systems is not very widespread today.

Slow Down

In 2019, inappropriate speed was present in 6,049 road accidents, 8% of the total. In addition, 298 of them had fatalities, which represents 23% of all accidents. These data show that driving too fast continues to cause many casualties on the road. The generic maximum speed limits are set out in article 48 of the General Traffic Regulations: 120 kilometres per hour on motorways and 90 on conventional roads for cars and motorcycles (the latter came into force in January 2019). For buses, trucks, and other vehicles the limits are lower. However, as explained by the General Directorate of Roads of the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (MITMA), it is not possible to travel at the maximum speed in all sections of a road. In some of them, the regulations reduce these limitations to precisely guarantee that driving and possible braking continue to be "in conditions of comfort and safety", as stated in Technical Instruction 3.1-Ic. This standard includes a mathematical formula that sets what the maximum speed should be on a certain section of road. It considers variables such as the driver's perception and reaction capacity, the vehicle's braking capacity, the coefficient of friction and the geometric visibility of the road, among others. Speed reductions are applied in three cases, included in article 7 of Standard 8.1-Ic on Vertical Signalling: When visibility decreases. As, for example, on bends. At road crossings, even when you have priority. From the General Directorate of

Roads, they explain that "there must be sufficient visibility so that drivers who circulate on the road that has priority can stop their vehicle in case another vehicle is crossing it unexpectedly". For road safety reasons. The conditions of the road, the state of the road, weather conditions, a greater presence of heavy vehicles (trucks) or frequent retentions "may make it advisable to establish values that increase the safety of all users". The maximum speed at which we can travel on a road is also reduced if work is carried out in a section, as regulated by the Road Standard 8.3-Ic on Works Signalling. Crossings The generic speed on crossings is 50 per hour. However, kilometres depending on the configuration of the population, and with the prior agreement of the owner of the road and the municipal authority, this limit may be reduced or increased. This change “must be adjusted to the type of crossing, the urban configuration of the population crossed, the type of traffic supported by the road (long or short distance, number of heavy vehicles, average daily intensity, etc.), and fundamentally to the degree of coexistence between motorised traffic and vulnerable users”, explains Pedro Tomás, Head of the Mobility Management Area of the DGT. Also remember that the only safe speed of movement in the case of coexistence between pedestrians and cyclists with motorised traffic is 30 kilometres per hour.

Land Rover Defender pickup possible Land Rover has re-launched the Defender in two- and four-door versions, two wheelbases, and three lengths - 90, 110, and 130 - intending to create a variety of models for the first new Defender in decades. But a significant variant is missing at the moment: a pickup. It's difficult to imagine Land Rover skipping pickups entirely with the current model, given the demand in a number of pickupfriendly markets like Australia, Spain and the US. When we would see such a model, however, is unknown, as is what it might look like. Land Rover has indicated there have been requests for such a model and has pointed out the ease of adapting the Defender to this body style. Jaguar Land Rover's executive director of vehicle programs, Nick Collins, said that there is customer

demand for such a version, and that "there were no structural limitations" to the Defender's monocoque design. Most trucks of this type still feature body-on-frame architecture. The Defender pickup is imagined as lifestyle truck, a four-door model with a truncated rear door and a stretched cargo box based on the 110 chassis, making it longer than the 110 SUV without a wheelbase stretch. Such a layout would keep the Defender to a manageable footprint while giving it a usable (but not too generous) cargo capacity. Experts also speculate that it would be a four-door model with a relatively short bed. The chances of a two-door model in addition to this one are slimmer, as with the Jeep Gladiator; such a layout would pit it against much less expensive trucks intended for farming or construction, and not the typical Land Rover buyer.

Elche CF, the nightmare ends with the reappearance of Escribá Elche CF and their fans were celebrating after their win on Saturday, although it would be true to say that we had almost forgotten how to!!! Last week’s report ended with the resignation of Almiron and this week’s report starts with the appointment of Fran Escriba. He was welcomed back to the club with open arms (following covid distancing rules of course) and will remain at the helm of what has been a very troubled ship until at least the end of the season. Escriba was the architect of Elche's fabulous 2013 promotion campaign, and he will be joined by former captain David Generelo from that season, as assistant coach. Right from the first whistle the Franjiverdes displayed evidence of Escriba's presence. Changes had been made to the starting line up and structure and discipline showed, with the first yellow card not being issued until the 41st minute. Eiber was without doubt the dominant side for most of the first half, launching long balls to the Elche CF goal mouth.

Shots by both Sergi Enrich and Kike García, were saved by the safe hands of Edgar Badia. The game changing moment came in the 32nd minute from a short corner. Antonio Barragán sent the ball sailing into the box and Dani Calvo made a massive jump to beat his defender and deftly headed the ball into the top corner, an impossible save for Eiber's Serbian born Marko Dmitrović. During the second half, Eiber continued to press generating several opportunities. However, the Elche defence remained calm and collected and continued working as a team. They successfully repelled the attacks, giving the normally active Badia little to do. Meanwhile, Elche players continued to pressure and goal chances were available to Boye,

Pere Milla and Josan. Sadly none were converted. The three points, the win and the breaking of the losing streak puts Elche in good stead for the coming onslaught of terror matches which will take place in the next couple of weeks. Starting with Barcelona who they will play on Wednesday 24th February. After just a couple of days recovery they will take on Granada on Sunday the 28th at 18:30 at the Los Cármenes Stadium. As soon as spectators are allowed back into the stadiums, EuroTourGuide will once again be offering Coach Tours with Match Tickets to support Elche CF. TORREVIEJA GETS WORLD’S FIRST OLYMPIC SIZED ‘SMART POOL’ After the system has been installed in 25 metre pools in Japan, the United States and some Spanish cities, Torrevieja has become the first city in the world to boast the pioneering ‘Smart Pool’ system in a swimming pool of Olympic standards (50 meters). The pool will also have the new Nagi Distance system, a tool that helps to combat COVID-19, since it allows the controlling of the safety distance of swimmers and can help in track and tracing in the event of a positive diagnosis. The system was presented by the Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, alongside the Councillor for Sports, Diana Box, the CEO of the Nagi Smartpool company, Javier Bosch, as well as its Product Manager, José Miguel López. The pioneering technological safety system now in place in Torrevieja’s municipal swimming also helps to prevent drowning and offers state of the art management of the safety distance between swimmers. Torrevieja becomes the first city on the Mediterranean coast with a smart pool and the first in the world to use this technology in a 50-meter pool.

In addition to safety, the system is revolutionizing the experience of swimmers. The technology allows all swimmers to know "live", through screens located next to the pool, records of their activity in the water (activity time, distance, rest time, best marks, etc...) With a click, the swimmer can be located within the building both in and out of the water thanks to a tracking technology installed by Spanish company Nothingbutnet. This location will allow the swimmer to stay safe for the duration of the session for two

reasons: the prevention of drowning - in case of being submerged for longer than established by the system, the device will emit an emergency signal to the lifeguard so that he or she can act immediately. Secondly, the system offers real-time control of the capacity and the safety distance. In case of breaking the distance with other swimmers, the device will emit an alert that will warn the swimmer that he is too close to another swimmer and will continue to emit the warning until the distance is corrected.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT top four. West Ham. 4th. And good for it too, I can tell you.

■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Jesse Lingard’s rebirth is a pleasure to see and his finish for the Hammers’ winner will be overlooked because it was in a West Ham shirt with Lingard on the back and not a United shirt with Fernandes above the number.

There’s bad, and then there’s losing to the Ev at Anfield in the Merseyside derby for the first time in over a decade bad. This time last week, there was underground talk that Jurgen Klopp had walked out on Liverpool rumours to this intense level not started since one of those Beatles were leaving the band or something. Of course, it wasn’t true - but do you think King Kloppo might be starting to head that way in his mind? You have to feel a bit for Ozan Kabak - I mean, how bad can Liverpool be if he is wondering whether life at Schalke is less depressing? He’s been thrown in, and rightly so given he was signed to play in a defence that has no central defenders, and he’s looking around and wondering how this lot won the title last year. And that’s the point - this lot didn’t win the title last season. No matter how cool it looks seeing Jordan Henderson sweep the ball out to the wing from a deeper position, it doesn’t make him a centreback. You can get away with it for so long, but then it catches up - so why Jurgey-lad insists in keeping him there (therefore losing him in midfield) when he has actual defenders who could play there is bizarre. Rather than focus on that, Klopp reminded the world that it really is very windy in Liverpool and that ‘God must be a Man City fan and you cannot beat God’. Well, not with Hendo at centre-back, you can’t. Still, Carlo Ancelotti finds himself in Everton folklore already with the win and rare credit has to go to Jordan Pickford for not finding a way to make the game more difficult than it needed to be. And once again, Richarlison is a decent player if can spend enough of a match on his feet and not rolling about on the floor. Man City looked like they were very much in the mood for the first eight

minutes against Arsenal before realising they didn’t really need to over-exert themselves to maintain their lead at the top of the Premier League table. Kevin de Bruyne is back, which hardly damages their chances and the way John Stones casually eased Yo-Pierre off the pitch towards the end of the match bodes well for the summer - if only Ruben Dias was more English than Harry Maguire. 18 wins in a row for Pep’s lot now. Ten points with no other team looking consistent enough to take advantage of any slip-ups? I doubt it’s that cut-and-dry. Ole Gunnar Solkjaer is certainly hoping it is done and dusted. Manchester United saw off Newcastle 3-1 at Old Trafford with Rashford and James scoring plus, of course, the obligatory Brunaldo penalty. But where City look rock solid in defence, United have a perma-injured Lindelof and the aforementioned Maguire who, we must presume, was trying to head it out for a corner rather than dollying it up for Alain Saint-Maximin to volley home. Thomas Tuchel has made his first mark at Chelsea. Hooking Callum Hudson-Odoi after 76 minutes having only brought him on at half time is the

kind of managerial move that makes me like a manager a lot. We have no idea at this stage where Hudson-Odoi sits in the Stamford Bridge player power rankings that have seen off many a coach before Tuchel, but he did not look too impressed when his number went up. Minamino starred for Southampton again, scoring his second since his loan move from Liverpool and Mason Mount probably finds himself top of the class under his new teacher following his penalty-based equaliser. It’s incredible to think that when Tottenham were 3-0 up with ten minutes to go against West Ham earlier in the season I was prepared to hail Jose Mourinho’s comeback as an amazing thing and how Spurs were very much title-challengers this season. Those that have read this column for some seasons (come on, there must be a few of you) will know this isn’t my worst tip ever - but it’s not aging very well, I’ll give you that. West Ham are actually revitalised under the second coming of Moyes and their win over their London rivals kept them in the Champions League places. Yes, that means they are in the

It was all very well Tottenham pushing hard late on - do you remember the days when they’d do that at the start, lead, then give away a daft equaliser? - West Ham were good value for the win that keeps my predicted title-winners in 9th. Ouch. It’s also the first time the Moysaih has beaten Jose Mourinho. Still, Jose’s coaching methods are still second to none according to, er, Jose. Leicester City managed to widen the gap between them and any other topfour wannabes with a 2-1 win over a Jack Grealishless Aston Villa. That allowed James Maddison a bye in the Grealish vs Maddison undercard clash and he took full advantage by scoring the Foxes’ second - which turned out to be the decider. You’d think Sheffield United would have circled Fulham away as a match they could win to have any chance of staying up. You know Fulham would have done the same - and it was Scott Parker’s team who took all three points in a rare case of ‘player does big prematch exclusive interview in the paper and then actually plays well that afternoon’ as Ademola Lookman nicked the winner. Ilian Meslier has made some mistakes this season, there is no denying that. However, Leeds’ French keeper cannot be blamed for Adam Traore’s piledriver hitting the bar, bouncing down and hitting him on the backside before crawling over the line. Even for Leeds, this was a new way to lose. Burnley and West Brom ending goalless was far from the biggest surprise of the weekend, I am sure you’d agree.
