Orihuela Costa Emergency Centre on target for June The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, alongside the councillors for Emergencies, Víctor Valverde, and of Citizen Security, José Aix, visited the new Emergency Services Centre in La Zenia.

The politicians were shown round by Eduardo Merino and Gonzalo Rodríguez, Director and Site Manager of construction company Doalco who had good news to share as the Centre on track

to be completed before this summer. The Councillor for Emergencies said that “this is complicated work without set guidelines. It is a living project that is undergoing many modifications as it progresses, recommended by the professionals who will work and carry out their duties here”. As the building evolves, the experts are spotting issues as they arise and these are being address now, rather than when the centre is up and running. It is hoped that the 3,500 m² build will be ready for summer, so that the emergency services will be in place as the population increases with tourists and holiday-home owners. Victore Valverde explained that: “At the moment, we are holding different conversations with the Provincial Firefighters Consortium and with Forest Fire-fighters so that they can also have

their base here in the summer season. Considering that this centre is in the heart of Sierra Escalona the response time to any call outs from the new Centre would be quite short. “We are also having meetings with the Ministry of Health so that SAMU has a presence in the area 24-hours a day. This Centre is going to be a national benchmark because very few city councils are committed to this type of facility, where it is very important to streamline facilities and actions.” This project began in 2007 but ground to a halt after the construction company was declared bankrupt. In 2010 the contract was resolved but it wasn’t until 2015 that the project was rescheduled. The works were awarded a year ago to the Orihuela-based company Doalco for €2,064,000.

Alligator rescued in Sax

Sunday rain causes havoc with 60 litres of rain per m2

Seprona, the environmental unit of the Guardia Civil, have rescued an alligator from a farm in Sax. The 1.6 metre alligator has since been transferred to Rio Safari in Elche where it will be cared for by reptile experts. The animal had been put up for sale on a buy and sell website for €2000. Seprona officers were tipped off to the existence of a large and potentially dangerous alligator which was being kept at a country house in Sax. The house is located very near the Vinalopó river – a risky situation because if the animal had escaped, it would have found an ideal habitat among the river vegetation to hide and survive, which would have presented a real danger for people who walk or go fishing along the Vinalopó riverbed. To find the animal and its owner, Seprona launched an investigation with the collaboration of the College of Veterinarians and the Official Export Inspection, Surveillance and Regulation Service (Soivre) to find the alleged owner of the alligator and the farm where the animal was being kept. As soon as officers were able to identify the person involved, and were able to locate the house in the town of Sax, agents went to carry out an inspection. Not only did they find the alligator, but officers also discovered a Harris's eagle. The owner was asked to prove the legal ownership of the two animals but could only provide the eagle's transfer document and could not prove lawful ownership of the alligator. He could not prove the origin of either animal and for the alligator, he did not appear to have the necessary insurance for the possession of potentially dangerous animals. For this reason, the Guardia Civil intervened. Officers brought the alligator to Rio Safari Zoo in Elche, where a microchip was administered and the animal registered in the Official College of Veterinarians of Alicante and in the Animal of Registry Valencian Identification (Rivia)

After 50 days without rain, Sunday was a washout in many parts of the Vega Baja. In Torrevieja, cars were stranded and streets were closed as emergency services were deployed to help motorists. A dead dolphin was found on Playa de los Locos in Torrevieja on Friday. The specimen, a striped dolphin, was removed by emergency services and town hall workers and will be frozen in order that the cause of death can be later determined by the municipal biologist. EU recovery funds treble Spanish coffers Spain is likely to be one of the first to receive a payout from the European Recovery Fund, set up to help member States rebuild and improve on their economies after these took a battering from the Covid-19 pandemic. Of the total pot of €750 billion, Spain is eligible for up to €140bn – of which half will be direct, nonrefundable grants, and the other half can be requested in no-strings loans. Although there will be no imposed austerity measures such as tax hikes or high-street restructures like those required when Spain applied for a €100 million bank bailout from the EU in 2012 – particularly as all 27 countries are, this time, automatically entitled to a cut – each nation is required to send in a detailed plan of what it will do with the cash, and which must be signed off before it is paid out. Portugal, currently the president country of the EU, is aiming for the funds to be released as early as this summer. Sra Ferreira says: “It's a tsunami of money, and it's a tsunami of responsibility.

“Spain has all the right characteristics to be able to get the best possible out of this historic opportunity.” This is likely to be because of the nation's heavy dependence upon tourism and the catering industry for its income – both

together, in a normal year, these would make up around 30 cents in every euro of Spain's GDP – and the fact that a third of its workforce are self-employed and around 75 percent of companies are small and medium-sized, mainly family-run, businesses. To qualify for the funds, member States are requested to detail their home resources and confirm their applications by April at the latest – although so far, only six countries have done so. “There's a real need to speed up this process – there are different

institutional mechanisms which need to be complied with, and yet just six countries have done it,” Sra Ferreira warns. Completing this procedure is in the general interest. Spain's President Pedro Sánchez and his government sent in the country's draft spending, or investment, plan in October, and it is being analysed by the Recovery and Resilience Working Group set up by European Commission Secretary-General, France's Céline Gauer. According to Commission sources, the examining process of Spain's application is 'heading in the right direction'. These same sources say the procedure, for Spain, is among those of five countries which are 'the furthest ahead so far', and looks set to be one of the first applications to be approved for the funds to be transferred 'as soon as they become available'. Spain intends to send the Commission the definitive version of its recovery plan before the end of March.

New community group is instant hit If there has been one positive outcome of the global pandemic, it’s that those of us reluctant to embrace technology have had our hand forced. A number of factors are at play but mainly, the enforced separation from friends, family and community has prompted us to use the digital space more to our advantage and reconnect with our friends and neighbours. Testament to this is the instant success of a new Facebook group on the Southern Costa Blanca: The Irish Community in Orihuela Costa which has gained over 1000 likes in its first week of operation. The group was established by Kildare native Audrey O’Gorman who lives in La Zenia. Audrey told the Costa Blanca People, “Since arriving to this beautiful part of the world, there have been so many changes: new businesses, new people, new urbanisations, the opening of Zenia Boulevard, the expansion of the N332, the closure of San Javier airport, the Gota Fria, the Brexit scenario and the infamous Covid - we now all live in a very different world.” We asked Audrey what prompted her to set up the Irish community Facebook page. She explained, “I’ve always known we had a strong Irish community here, and a large business input into the area - yet, with all the buy and sell Facebook pages, groups and so on, there was none set up for any particular community... so I just thought, ‘why not?’”

The group immediately captured the imagination of the local Irish community with 600 members in less than two days and over 1000 witin a week - as Audrey said, “Little did I know that my phone would be constantly beeping since I set up the group! My main idea was to create a group to help and support the Irish lads and ladies in the area with good advice, places to go and highlight tourism in Orihuela Costa, but also to give the Irish businesses a boost too!” Audrey explained that although the group is Irish in essence it is open to everyone, saying “ We need to support all locals, and that’s why anyone can join the group, anyone can advertise, even tell a joke or two, but we won’t tolerate negativity or bullies!” In terms of her vision for the future purpose of the page, Audrey told us “I hope with the current economic climate that the group page could also be used as a platform to hire staff, or offer advice on the Spanish social welfare system, vaccinations, medical care etc - all useful information would be appreciated by our members.” Audrey continued, “I hope that once we begin to resume some type of normality, that members can ask for places to rent, enquire about best eateries and things to do in the area. We can boost local small businesses, the heart of the local economy.”

Los Montesinos marks 8M Los Montesinos town hall is marking 8M, International Women's Day, by focusing on trafficking and slavery in the 21st Century. From 5th March to 28th March, the town is hosting a travelling photographic exhibition showcasing 40 photographs of women who have been victims of human trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation – but have managed to get out of the control of their captors. “This exhibition aims to highlight what is behind what has been called the ‘oldest trade in the world’ and that in reality is the most serious form of violence against women. Around 95 percent of women who practice prostitution in Spain come from trafficking and trafficking is slavery,” said Councillor for Equality, Ana Belén Juárez. The exhibition can be seen from 9am to 7pm from 5th to 28th March in the Assembly Hall of the Civic and Social

Centre, Plaza del Ayuntamiento, with a limited capacity of 25 people at a time. Continuing with this theme on Thursday 11th March, at 7.30pm, the Auditorium of the School of Music will host a round-table discussion entitled ‘Trafficking in women: the slavery of the XXI century’. This will be hosted by Modes Salazar Agulló, Head of the Gender Violence Unit of the Alicante Government sub-delegation, Gemma Martínez Sánchez, Social Educator of the OBLATAS Alicante Program and María Jesús Navarro Ríos, Director of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Gender Studies CIEG of the UMH. The three women know the problem of trafficking and will give a true picture of what lies behind - a business of sexual exploitation of women that moves 3.7 billion euros a year in Spain. Again capacity is limited, so please call to register on: 9666721087 or email your name and a contact number to: equality@losmontesinos .org. The event will also be streamed through the town hall’s Facebook page.

The Irish Community in Orihuela Costa Audrey O’Gorman

Audrey has managed to keep her own business – The Celtic Cocina – afloat throughout the pandemic and knows firsthand the power of social media. Cooking tasty dinners and baked goods, Audrey has made her mark locally with her signature Guinness Brown Soda Bread and her weekly Slimmers Menu (a godsend for those following a slimming plan – all the meals are ‘slimming world’ friendly

and come in weekly batches that just need to be reheated). Keeping a small business going during a global pandemic hasn’t been without its challenges, but Audrey considers herself fortunate to be part of a supportive local community. She told us, “For me, my regular customers have never let me down and I’ve had huge support from local businesses all over the area such as Evolution in La Fuente,

Paddy’s Point, Brian Kiernan, Milo’s, O’Riordans, The Lansdowne, Transylvania Garden, Blush Hair Salon, The Madhouse and Domos Bistro – I’m truly blessed to have their support.” To sum it all up, Audrey says, "Join the group. Everyone is welcome! The more the merrier!” Find the group on Facebook by searching for “The Irish Community in Orihuela Costa”

Backlash as Spanish princesses get Covid vaccine abroad A revelation that two sisters of Spain's King Felipe VI were vaccinated during a trip to Abu Dhabi last month has sparked a political backlash. Media reports revealed Princess Elena, 57, and Princess Cristina, 55, had got the jab whilst visiting their father. The former King, Juan Carlos, left the country in 2020 amid mounting scandals and has been living in self-exile in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) since last August. Although he denied wrongdoing regarding mounting corruption allegations, his departure heightened debate and scrutiny about the royal family. Both princesses, who do not yet qualify to get a vaccine under Spain's roll-out, defended and explained their decision. "My sister and I went to visit my father and in order to be issued with a medical certificate which will allow us to continue to visit him regularly, we were offered the chance to get vaccinated, which we

accepted," they said in a statement to Spanish national newspaper El Mundo. "Had it not been for these circumstances, we would have waited for our turn to get vaccinated to come around in Spain," they added.

Princess Elena and Princess Cristina

Equality Minister Irene Montero was among the politicians who criticised the princesses after the revelation was first reported by online news website El Confidencial. "The vaccination of the princesses is more news which contributes to discrediting the monarchy. For the public, this constitutes preferential treatment

and privileges," the minister told the public TVE network. Labour Minister Yolanda Diaz described the matter as "very unpleasant, very ugly". "We, the people who exercise some sort of representation, must lead by example," she added. A royal palace source declined to comment on the reports to Reuters on the basis that the sisters are not formally part of the institution but said the king, Queen Letizia and their daughters would get the vaccination when it was their turn. Spain has only administered about 4m vaccines so far, with over-80s and essential workers currently being prioritised. A similar scandal rocked the country in January, when some senior figures including the country's top military chief resigned after they were implicated in "queue-jumping" allegations of their own.

Alicante building voted ugliest The pyramid building in Alicante has been voted the ugliest building in Spain. The triangular Montreal building, known locally as "La Pirámide" was built in 1968 by Elda architect Alfonso Navarro. It is one of the most symbolic buildings of the city and is usually included in lists of architectural aberrations. Despite its divisive design, the 25 storey yellow building is popular among residents. “We live very well here. The

rooms are large and the views are wonderful,” said one resident. 'La Pirámide' is not the only building in the province criticised in the survey. The Intempo building in Benidorm and the Gran Sol hotel, in Alicante also made the ugly building list.

After praising Eddie’s ill with the disease.

Saladares The Department of Historical Heritage, led by the Councillor Rafael Almagro, has completed the preliminary work at the Los Saladares site that will give way to the archaeology and research work that will begin in the coming weeks. “Once the clearing is completed, the access fence to the site has been repaired and the area marked, the dig can begin. Using the latest high-tech equipment has allowed us, without the need to carry out deep excavations, to make a complete scan below ground level and at great depth for the exact location of the archaeological remains. We have also used a precision drone to carry out the cartographic work,” the Councillor explained. Once the authorisation has been received, experts will remove asbestos from the 1970s structures left from previous excavations and that are now in

a state of ruin. The archaeological work will begin in less than two weeks and archaeologists who are completing their doctorate will join specialists under the expert eye of Alberto Lorrio, professor of Prehistory at the University of Alicante. The Orihuela City Council has signed an agreement with the University of Alicante to carry out the studies and excavations of the Los Saladares site over the next 4 years. The Ministry of Culture has highlighted the scientific relevance of the location and the project will include converting the site into a museum allowing public visits. The archaeological site of Los Saladares is located on a 10,000 m² plot owned by the Orihuela City Council. It is a protected area classified as B.I.C. and located in the Los Cabecicos Verdes between the districts of Arneva and Desamparados.

Ancient ruins

Orihuela City Council has announced that the playgrounds in the municipality will remain closed at least until 14th March, despite the recent relaxation of measures against Covid-19. This decision will not affect general parks and green areas, but only children’s play parks and playgrounds. The Councillor in charge of the Parks and Gardens service, Ángel Noguera, justified this decision explaining that ‘even though the incidence rate is improving in Orihuela, something which interpersonal distancing has specifically influenced, the department is aware that it cannot lower its guard. The hard work would be ruined if playgrounds become places of transmission across age groups’. The team are aware that parents and grandparents often taken children to parks and that households mix whilst playing, which could result in an outbreak. Orihuela has more than 200 playgrounds in its municipal area, and opening them could generate the same number of possible sources of contagion. It would be impossible to ensure that the regulation group of four is maintain in a play environment and so from a health perspective it is best to keep them closed.

Residents asked to help formulate Local Waste Management Plan The Department of Road Cleaning, led by Dámaso Aparicio, has organised a participatory information day, which will take place on 11th March at 12:30pm, in a ‘webinar’ format with which the roadmap of the Local Plan of Waste Management (PLGR) will be discussed. Councillor Aparicio explained that “since mid-2019 the Valencian Community applied the new regulations that established the obligation that municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants must have the PLGR approved before September. We, within the difficulties that we have had in

recent months, have not stopped working to have this plan that we want to address not only the future but also the present. The rules are becoming more restrictive and we must act to conserve our planet. This Plan is not only an obligation but from the government team we see it as an opportunity for Orihuela to move towards a new waste management”. The PLGR will be developed in the most participatory way possible because "if we really want to have a city that is cleaner and more respectful of the environment, it has to be born from the participation of all citizens of both the coast and the

districts as well as the city”. To participate in the webinar, all you have to do is register on the council's website or facebook. Once this is done, work groups will be created to collect citizen thoughts and contributions so that by July this Plan will be drawn up and approved by the Municipal Plenary. Councillor Aparicio concluded by explaining that "the management of waste in this City Council is done directly, after a provisional agreement reached in 2012, so at the moment we are all, including the opposition groups, hoping to approve a plan by consensus because it is the future of our city”.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP It was not all plain sailing for the pound, but it enjoyed an overall successful week, only beaten by the US dollar. Last Friday and again this Wednesday, the pound was the top performer, while on Monday it was the back marker.UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak’sBudget was all investors could focus on, and on the same day sterling enjoyed itself as the top-performing currency. However, while there was only a loose connection between the two events, the speech did help answer the question of how much additional support the government is prepared to offer businesses and individuals whilst the unlocking process is underway. The Chancellor outlined a number of policies and business support measures, including the extension to the furlough scheme and stamp duty holiday, although both had already been reported in the press. With many of the measures already preannounced, currency movements were already priced in to an extent. What could have been a bigger help to the pound was the slightly brighter assessment from the Office for Budget Responsibility, the government’s independent economic forecaster and analyst. The OBR upgraded its predictions for growth and jobs, lowering its estimate of peak unemployment from 7.5% to 6.5% at the end of this year. It hopes the combination of budget stimulus and vaccination will bring “a swifter and more sustained economic recovery, albeit from a more challenging starting point than we forecast in November.

EURO Playing catch up on the vaccine rollout is still very much shaping the success of the euro. This week the Italian government blocked the export of 250,000 doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine from its facility in Italy to Australia. Italy is the first EU country to use the bloc’s new regulations that allow exports of the vaccine to be halted if the company providing vaccines had not met its obligations to the EU. It’ll be interesting to look out for any repercussions. There was a great deal of indecision among investors with regard to risk-appetite. In general they claimed to favour risk, and to chase returns, but that did not translate into steady upward pressure on equities and nor did it mean any further concerted markdown for bond prices. It did, however, result in losses for the safe-haven Japanese yen and Swiss franc, as well as for the euro. The euro fell an average of 0.2% on the week, losing nearly two US cents and giving up a cent and a third to sterling. Economic data from the Eurozone suggested that Germany is continuing to re-establish itself as Europe’s industrial prime mover. Manufacturing sector PMIs put Germany in first place with a 37-month high of 60.7. Italy achieved a 56.9 and France was at 56.1. Only Greece missed the cut at 50, with a score of 49.4. Predictably, in view of Covid restrictions, the services PMIs were a bit sketchy, with Germany and pan-Eurozone both at 45.7. Lockdowns also dampened retail sales, with monthly and annual declines of 5.9% and 6.4%.

Spain heads toward an Easter Thirdwave pushes week without interregional travel up unemployment Spain is approaching an Easter week four weeks, it will be complicated at with restrictions on movement the current rate of descent. The Ministry’s comments echo those of leaving perimetral lockdowns of their territories in place. These are in of Fernando Simón, the director of the force in all areas, apart from Madrid, Health Ministry’s Coordination Center Extremadura and the Balearic and for Health Alerts (CCAES). Speaking to Canary islands. The Health Ministry is present the daily coronavirus report he said: “I’m an studying a common plan that would recently, be implemented across the country, epidemiologist, and I’m interested in and is seeking support to back it from keeping the epidemic under control. the regions. The Health Ministry referred to the words of its minister Carolina Darias, from last week: “The objective is to get down to 50 cases [per 100,000 inhabitants over the last 14 days]. It is easy for that number to go up and difficult to get it down. We are focused on protecting the health [of the population] and continuing saving lives. [We are calling for] prudence, responsibility and Carolina Darias common sense. We are on a good path, but we cannot be Obviously, my visions are different overconfident. We are in the midst of from those that a businessman, for the vaccination process, which is example, could have. If the speeding up and it’s important that transmission conditions are not correct for there to be a little more of everything goes well.” According to the latest data from a reopening, I believe that it should the Health Ministry, Spain’s 14-day not even be considered,” he stated. This same message was backed by cumulative number of coronavirus cases per 100,000 inhabitants is government spokesperson María 168.44, and while it would not be Jesús Montero, speaking after the impossible to get below 50 cases in weekly Cabinet meeting last week. She

also called for “prudence,” for there not to be an “abrupt” deescalation in order to avoid a fourth wave of the pandemic. Madrid, meanwhile, which currently is not under a perimetral lockdown, has distanced itself from this position. But its regional premier, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, has not made a definitive announcement about its approach. During the pandemic, the Madrid regional government has often been at loggerheads with the central administration, which is led by the Socialist Party (PSOE) and junior partner Unidas Podemos. In the autumn of last year, this led to the central government intervening in the region to introduce stricter coronavirus measures in the face of Ayuso’s refusal. The regional government, which is run by the PP in coalition with centerright Ciudadanos (Citizens) and propped up by far-right Vox, has also opted not to follow the lead of other regions and close bars and restaurants during the third wave. Madrid’s 14-day cumulative number of coronavirus cases per 100,000 inhabitants is 273.39 according to the latest Health Ministry report, the worst of all 17 regions and the only territory that is still over the 250-mark considered “extreme risk” by the Spanish government.

More than four million people are now registered as unemployed in Spain. The restrictions of the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic led to 44,436 new jobless claims in February, pushing the total to 4,008,789. The last time that this symbolic threshold was crossed was in April 2016. The Social Security system added an average of just over 20,000 contributors, reflecting new jobs, according to data released on Tuesday by the Labor and Social Security ministries. But this increase is much smaller than in other years, and meanwhile, the number of people affected by the government’s ERTE furlough scheme grew by 91,500. The figures reflect how businesses are showing signs of exhaustion after a crisis that has dragged on for close to a year now. February is normally a transitional month when jobs, as measured by Social Security affiliations, bounce back after the usual January slump. This has happened again to some degree, and total affiliations now number 18.85 million. But the February rise was much greater during

the eight preceding years. And seasonally adjusted figures, which factor in the effects of harvesting and tourism on hiring, show that affiliations fell by over 30,000 in February. Coronavirus restrictions have also had a noticeable effect on the number of furloughed workers. Significant limits on movement and business activity – with the exception of the Madrid region – have led employers to temporarily send home or reduce the working hours of nearly 900,000 workers. It remains to be seen whether the Easter holidays, when regional governments are expected to further ease restrictions based on improving epidemiological figures, will help boost the labor market. But so far, the first quarter of the year is confirming that the government’s relief programs – including the ERTE job-retention scheme and state-guaranteed loans – are not enough to shore up distressed businesses. And it looks like the recently announced €11-billion package will not contain direct aid despite reiterated requests by affected industries.

New look for Coopers Regulars at Coopers in Dona Pepa couldn’t help but notice the stunning changes to the bar as it reopened recently. The interior is now light, bright, chic and stylish but is still as pleasant and welcoming as always. Since taking over from her parents, who ran The Copper’s Arms for more than 11 years, Chanade Cooper wanted to improve and modernise the space, whilst keeping all the elements the locals love. There are now comfortable chairs at all the modern wooden tables, there is a soft seating area with sofa and coffee table where friends can meet to chat and relax. With interior spaces still closed, Coopers has the perfect answer as the refurb included creating a large covered terrace, complete with patio heaters. All tables are spaced to meet current regulations so customers have peace of mind whilst enjoying a drink and a meal. Keeping its reputation as the best bar for watching sports, the heated terraces has

a large screen and a 3-meter projector, to ensure customers don’t miss out on any of the sporting action. The fabulous food at Coppers has always been a huge hit, drawing customers from near and far. Now opening at 8.30am, breakfast at Cooper’s is the perfect way to start your day. Breakfast like a King is an adage that holds true here, with a dedicated breakfast menu. This includes small and large traditional full cooked English breakfasts or a range of bacon, egg or sausage breakfast sandwiches. If you looking for something a little lighter then the ‘Something on Toast’ section offers toppings from jam, beans, eggs or tomatoes to cheese or kippers. And if you fancy a real treat, then why not start you day with Eggs Benedict or Eggs Royale. Taking you through the day, Coppers offers a day-time menu with a huge selection of hearty pub grub and family favourites. Its main courses include its

much-loved Fish & Chips as well as classics such as Lasagne and Cajun Chicken. There is a range of sandwiches, baguettes and wraps, salads, jacket potatoes, omelettes and burgers and if there’s still room check out the tasty side orders. There is also a children’s menu. Award winning Of course on a Sunday, Coopers is the home of award winning Sunday Lunches, which are renowned across the area and so popular that booking is always advisable. These are served from 1pm to 6pm and are just 11e for 2 courses and 13.50e for 3 courses, both include a small beer, glass of wine or soft drink to accompany the best homemade traditional Sunday Roast for miles. If you want to test the old ‘grey matter’ and enjoy a good afternoon out, then Thursday Quiz Afternoon is for you. The fun starts at 3.30pm and the event includes a full quiz and Play your Cards Right.

Cooking advice... to ignore The truth is out From washing raw chicken to throwing out bread that's stale, there's a lot of terrible cooking advice out there. Spanning the downright dangerous to the simply unhelpful, these are the cooking tips you should always ignore. Sauté onion and garlic at the same time Adding garlic to the pan at the same time as onions is a common mistake. Garlic cooks very quickly, and the smaller it’s been chopped or minced, the faster it will cook. Avoid the bitter taste of burnt garlic by adding it towards the end of cooking – unless the dish contains a sauce or liquid, which will prevent it from burning. Ginger needs peeling Nope, ginger needs scraping and here’s how: simply scrape the skin off this knobbly root with the tip of a spoon. This way you don’t lose lots of the flesh while trying to peel the skin. Spices can be added at any stage Most spices should be lightly toasted at the beginning of cooking to release their aromas. The exception to this is garam masala – this fragrant spice is traditionally added towards the end of cooking as it heightens the overall flavour of a curry. Scrambled eggs need milk For the perfect scrambled eggs, you need do nothing more than give eggs and seasoning a vigorous whisk before cooking them in hot butter. Adding more liquid such as milk, cream or water will give you runny eggs with a diluted flavour – not the soft, fluffy eggs you’re

hoping for. It's OK to bake with cold eggs and dairy These products may seem fresher straight out of the fridge but cooking with cold produce can create a dense bake. Eggs and dairy that have had 30–60 minutes to come up to room temperature contain more air, so make for a lighter bake. Check what the recipe is asking for. Usually pastry and biscuits want cold butter, and cakes and buttercream call for room temperature ingredients. A non-stick pan is the best choice Non-stick pans aren't always the best option for what you’re cooking. They don't heat up as quickly as their cast iron counterparts, so browning takes longer and food runs the risk of being overcooked. Non-stick pans are better for fragile foods such as delicate fish or dishes that are cheesy or eggy. For more robust dishes such as steak and stir-fries, use a seasoned cast iron pan. Pre-heating pans and ovens isn't necessary The presumption that pans and ovens don’t need to get up to temperature is a rookie mistake. Food cooks more evenly and will be ready in the time stated in the recipe if you use a pre-heated pan or oven. When using a pan it’s especially important that fat is hot before adding ingredients. You can ruin a bake if you use an oven that's not hot enough too. Resting meat is a waste of time Until it rests, meat is not at its best. Allowing meat to rest relaxes the muscle fibres and helps contain the juices. Leave

the likes of steak or chicken loosely covered in foil for five to 10 minutes (thin cuts won’t require as long) for a more succulent bite. Cook risotto rice straight from the packet Arborio rice greatly benefits from being lightly toasted. Toast on a gentle heat in a little hot olive oil for a couple of minutes until it turns opaque then add a ladle of stock or white wine to stop the rice burning. Toasting infuses the rice with a nutty flavour and helps it to steadily absorb liquid. Pasta water is waste water Pasta water is a very handy thing indeed. After draining pasta, keep aside a couple of ladles of the starchy, salty liquid to mix into the dish – it makes a sauce silky, creamy and rich and helps it cling to the pasta. Leftovers need to cool down before going in the fridge The advice that leftovers need to cool down completely before being chilled is outdated, a hangover from when food was stored in iceboxes. Professional bodies now recommend that food is put in the fridge soon after serving and definitely within a couple of hours. This is because when it's left in temperatures of 4°C to 60°C (40°F to 140°F) bacteria can double in number every 30 minutes. Chicken should be rinsed Rinsing chicken in water before cooking doesn’t get rid of any nasties; in fact, splashing water might actually spread bacteria and is advised against. Cooking meat thoroughly to an internal temperature of 74°C (165°F) will kill any bacteria present.

More than 30 years after Prince Akeem Joffer and his sidekick Semmi first travelled to the United States to find a royal bride, Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall reprise their roles in comedy sequel "Coming 2 America". Murphy, creator and star of the 1988 film - which proved more popular with audiences than critics when it came out returns to the fictional nation of Zamunda, this time as Akeem prepares to become king. A father to three daughters in a country where only a male heir can sit on the throne, Akeem finds out he has a son in America and returns to Queens, the New York borough he first visited decades ago, to meet him. "This movie is like the first movie. It's (an) all black cast and it's ... not about race, and it's not about civil unrest or social injustice or there's no preaching," Murphy told Reuters in an interview. "(It) is just total escapism ... it's a movie

about family and love and tradition and doing the right thing." In the first film, the pampered prince foregoes his luxuries to find a woman who will love him for himself. Most of the original cast reprise their roles in the sequel, which is released on Amazon Prime Video on Friday, including James Earl Jones as King Jaffe Joffer and Shari Headley as Akeem's wife Lisa. New faces include Murphy's daughter Bella Murphy. "Being on the movie set with my daughter was a big deal for me," Murphy said. The 59-year-old and Hall revisit the barber shop scene, a fan favourite from the original movie, where the actors portray multiple ageing characters. "There is a part three that happens in 16 years," Murphy said, jokingly leaving the door open for a future film. "I don't think the barbers will be in this one though."

Good carbs We may have started a new year, but the low-carb craze continues. There are also millions taking it a step further by committing to a keto diet and with a staggering 3.9 million posts under the hashtag #keto on Instagram, the ultra popular diet shows no sign of losing speed. The medical diet first surfaced in the 1920s as a treatment for patients with drug-resistant epilepsy. These days, the high-fat, low-carbohydrate meal plan is followed primarily as a means for weight loss. Keto meals are comprised of about 70 percent – 80 percent fat, around 20 percent protein, and around 5 percent carbs. That means both “good” and “bad” carbs are basically off-limits on the keto diet. Limiting your intake of refined carbohydrates like white bread and baked goods is never a bad idea. But restricting complex carbs like those found in whole grains, fruits, and veggies can lead you to lose out on critical vitamins and minerals. Below are five carb-rich foods that deliver major health benefits.... Carrots Whatever diet works best for you, veggies should really be at the forefront and make up at least half of your plate. Apart from their ability to lower chronic disease risk, vegetables provide fibre phytonutrients, and bulk that helps keep us satiated. Take carrots, for example. A half cup of baby carrots (about six) delivers 6 grams

of carbs. That relatively high carb content is likely to cause keto eaters to avoid carrots like the plague. These veggies are also packed with beta carotene, the antioxidant precursor to vitamin A, which promotes eye health and skin health and is critical for proper immune function. Oats Right off the bat, cutting carbs can result in low blood sugar, low energy, moodiness, hunger, and exhaustion. When people cut out carbs long term, we find that when they add them back in they regain all the weight lost and then some. Plus, carbs are delicious and food is meant to be enjoyed. It’s more about choosing the right ones and keeping quantity in check. Keto eaters are advised to significantly limit their intake of whole grains like oats, which serve up 14 grams of carbohydrates per half cup, nearly a third of the carbs allotted for one day. Yet oats aren’t empty carbs. The breakfast staple contains soluble fibre that’s critical for maintaining heart health and lowering cholesterol levels (which may be even more important when you’re loading up on animal foods high in saturated fat while eating keto). Oats also contain some protein and important minerals like iron, folate, and magnesium. Bananas Keto lovers like to think of fruit the same way most of us think of candy: as a once-in-a-while treat that’s not to be consumed daily. While low-glycemic

fruits like berries are allowed in moderation on the ketogenic diet, fruits that fall higher on the glycemic index are on the outs. A medium banana containing 27 grams of carbohydrates, then, is almost a sure keto nono. While it’s true that diabetics may want to steer clear of the starchy fruit, avoiding bananas simply because they fall on the higher end of the carb spectrum isn’t necessary for everyone, especially since they provide potassium, vitamin B6, and fibre. Bananas also act as prebiotics—aka food for the good bacteria in your gut. Lentils Eat a cup and a half of cooked lentils (which contains around 60 grams of carbs) and you’ve already exceeded your keto carb intake for the day. That leaves no room for fruits, veggies, whole grains, or dairy on your plate at any other meal. It’s not surprising, then, that keto eaters stay away from pulses. Lentils are far from the enemy, though. Just one cup of cooked lentils contains around 18 grams of protein (as much as three eggs) and 15 grams of fibre; minerals like copper, manganese,

zinc, and phosphorous; and no saturated fat, making them a plant-based nutritional powerhouse. Still, if you do choose to try the ketogenic diet, be strategic about when you nosh on your allotted carbohydrates. Consider eating your carbs pre-workout, as they give you a quick energy spike. Cashews Nut lovers beware, cashews aren’t keto-friendly. Though most of us place nuts in the fat or protein category, they do contain carbohydrates, and the amount in certain varieties can add up

when following a ketogenic meal plan. A quarter cup of cashews, for example, will set you back about 10 grams of carbohydrates, roughly 20 percent of your daily recommended carb intake while eating keto. While we don’t suggest eating a whole cup of cashews, placing the nuts on your don'teat list isn’t necessary. Why? Eating an ounce of cashews—about 18 nuts—will give you 17 milligrams of healthy omega-3 fatty acids (an ounce of almonds, on the other hand, contains 0 mg). Early research even shows adding cashews to your diet may lower “bad” LDL cholesterol.

Suddenly they turned against me I lost my husband at the end of last year; it was our second marriage. My husband's children, who have always been very pleasant towards me, expected their father's inheritance. I have told them that their father and I made Wills leaving everything to each other, and then to our respective children on the final death of whoever is left at the end of the day. They are now saying that their father would never have wanted it that way. We thought we were being fair in leaving our respective children the percentage of assets that each of us brought to the marriage; i.e. I had a house, and my husband also had a house. My daughter will receive the percentage of the value of what I brought to the marriage. It's entirely fair, but my step-children are demanding their money now. I have sent them a copy of their father's and my Will, but they say to expect court action. We even recorded a video message to all of our children, in the presence of our solicitor and notary, to state our intention but this doesn’t seem good enough for them. I can’t afford to give them their inheritance now, it would mean selling our lovely home. This has really upset me and I don’t know what to do. It seems like you’ve been very fair in your plans. In your longer letter you say that your husband may have had some inclination that his children may cause a fuss when he died, and that they are claiming that he was not in his right mind at the time of making his Will. Let them seek legal advice, and wait for any repercussions, but please don’t feel tempted to change the arrangements just because they have turned against you and are putting pressure on to you; remember this is what your husband wanted. See your solicitor for reassurance.

How Meghan and Oprah met The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been interviewed by American TV juggernaut, Oprah Winfrey. It will mark the couple’s first televised interview since they stepped down from their royal duties at the start of 2020. However, the interview and its UK TV airing have been slammed for poor timing, given Prince Phillip’s poor health. Insiders say the interview covered “everything from stepping into life as a royal, marriage, motherhood, philanthropic work to how she is handling life under intense public pressure”. Winfrey was just one of the Alist celebrities who attended the couple’s wedding in May 2018, describing it as “transformative” in an interview after the event. “It was a cultural moment and you could not be there or watch on television and not feel that there was a shift that just happened in the middle of it,” she said. “It’s bigger than them.” 0prah had only met the Duchess once prior to being invited to her wedding and the impending interview is the result of a three-year discussion between the two women. The 67-year-old got in touch with Meghan through CBS, The Times reports, and they spoke on the phone. Since the wedding, there have been numerous incidents where Oprah has spoken publicly in

support of Meghan and Harry. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Winfrey said she was “proud” of the couple’s decision not to reveal the name of their godparents for their son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten Windsor. When they announced their departure from the royal family, Winfrey told TMZ.: “I support them 1,000 percent. You know why I support them? I support them because I believe, when you have thought about this as long as they have - and even in the Queen’s statement [she] says, ‘This has been going on for months,’ these discussions have been going on for months - and when Harry said in that charity statement the other day that he had to make the decision to move forward in peace with his

new family.” Winfrey is also friendly with Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland. After photos emerged of Ragland leaving Winfrey’s home with gifts, reports claimed that the TV host had showered her with gifts in a bid to get her to do a tell-all interview. Winfrey laughed off the reports. “I love the story, it was that Meghan’s Mum came to my house and she left with gifts. Do you know what the gifts were?” she told Entertainment Tonight. “For lunch we had dessert with kumquats and she said, ‘I love kumquats and I said, ‘I have a kumquat tree, do you want some kumquats?’ For all of the people who said I’m giving her gifts, I’m trying to bribe her for an interview, they were kumquats.”

The Pandemic and Mobility The consequences of Covid-19 have also caused changes when it comes to mobility. In fact, it may come as a surprise to find that the use of private vehicles and personal mobility (bicycles etc) has increased by + 35% and + 18%, respectively, while public transport has collapsed by -46% and taxis and VTC by 29%. The figures are confirmed by the Safe and Sustainable Mobility Study of the PonleFreno-AXA Study Centre, presented this week at an online press conference and in which the General Director of Traffic, Pere Navarro was present. The director of the DGT explained that in Spain "there is a certain awareness of road safety" and the awareness-raising work of public institutions, together with private entities, has made it possible. "There is no ideology here. There is scientific evidence. You have to do what you have to do. We can copy what has gone well in other places and thus we are all moving forward," Navarro stressed. On the other hand, he has indicated that journeys on foot "are going to be one of the main protagonists of the mobility to come. Because we are all pedestrians, because Spain has an increasingly aging population, because the elderly walk and vote. This condition will mark the political agenda for the next few years. Produced by Kantar between September and October 2020 and with the collaboration of PONS Seguridad Vial, the report collects the perception of more than 4,000 drivers on travel habits and on aspects related to safe, sustainable, accessible, and connected mobility. Regarding the various alternatives to try to improve safety, reducing speed in cities would be clearly

accepted: 62% would be in favour of limiting speed to 30km / h. However, there is not such a general opinion on the need to implement a greater number of radars, only 21% believe that it is insufficient, compared to 55% who consider that there are enough and 23% who believe that the number is excessive. In general terms, the majority opinion about safety is that it has not evolved, improved, or worsened over the last year (65%). Only a quarter think they have improved, a figure that increases among the youngest (38%), while women are clearly more critical (13%), as in Catalonia (15%) and Madrid (18%). Of those who think that it has worsened (11% of the drivers consulted), the distractions caused by the use of mobile devices, misuse of scooters, the lack of driver education and recklessness on the bike, as well as the so-called technological pedestrian (the person who walks using a technological device to speak, listen to music, etc.), represents a danger for 20% of drivers in the city. The expectation on road safety is not at all positive. Speeding and short safety distance are the inappropriate behaviours most observed by drivers who have participated in this survey. Another of the pending subjects that is perceived is the training of drivers, since only 29% believe that we leave well prepared to take the car after passing through driving schools, results that increase among the youngest (39%) , while among men (45%) and the age group 35-44 years (48%) there is a greater criticism in this regard. Therefore, there is a clear consensus on improving training: the need to use more audio-visual resources (73%), the training of technological and safety systems that vehicles incorporate (73%), the

possibility of obtaining extra points after receiving courses on safe driving (70%) or establish a minimum of practical classes (68%). With regard to sustainable mobility, one of the main conclusions is that 9 out of 10 think that vehicle pollution is an important or very important problem, although it is also true that the industry is for the interviewees the main factor that contributes to the pollution in cities (64% in the first option), followed by private vehicles (13%) and heating systems (9%). In relation to the environmental label of vehicles, 1 in 2 say they do not have it and of these, 54% do not want to put it on their vehicle - a figure that increases in Andalusia (61%), Aragón (70%), Balearic Islands (69 %), The Canary Islands (64%), Valencia (63%), Galicia (73%) and the Basque Country (71%). Only Madrid and Catalonia stand out for a higher degree of use of the label (79% and 68% respectively). Regarding the usefulness of labels, 70% highlight their use to reduce or restrict the mobility of certain vehicles, 60% to be aware of the degree of contamination of the vehicle, 64% as guidance to choose a car model and 55 % consider that its purpose is to collect money or to fine. Regarding connected mobility, 1 in 2 believe that there is not enough information about traffic in real time, which could be solved with applications that help plan better and faster routes, to which drivers would be willing to transfer your personal data. In this sense, of the available apps, navigation systems are the most used (76%), followed by payment in regulated parking lots and the use of public transport (44%), compared to the minority use of both vehicle rental and parking. mobility aggregators, around 15%.

The importance of scrapping your vehicle legally Having worked in the scrap business on the Costa Blanca for over a decade, the team at Bradley Breakers could tell us all a horror story or two about people who thought they had scrapped their old car only to find that the car was still registered, and even in some instanes driving around accumulating fines, many months later. There are car owners on the Costa Blanca who have faced large fines after the vehicle they thought they’d dealt with was still driving around. Unfortunately, as long as your name remains on the document of ownership you are legally responsible for that vehicle. Here in Spain the system of scrapping a vehicle is much different from anything you are likely to be used to

Ireland or the UK. If you also have the added complication of a language barrier it is even more imperative that, when considering disposing of a vehicle, you use a company in which you have complete trust. One such company is Bradley Breakers. They are experts in the field and they can make the whole process simple and uncomplicated. Simply make the call, they will make you a cash offer for your vehicle and if accepted they will collect the vehicle on a tow truck from your home ensuring the minimum of disruption and fuss for you. They will then leave you with the necessary legal documentation, indicating that they have taken ownership of your old vehicle and then, once the vehicle has been officially

‘scrapped’, you will be issued with the official DGT Certificate (Baja). Do be aware that, if this is something that you are currently considering, you need to ensure that your vehicle is scrapped by 31 December to avoid any further SUMA bills. Bradley Breakers said, “We can’t overemphasise the importance of doing the ‘baja’ of a vehicle properly in Spain. It saves so much hassle and heartache further along the line doing it in the correct way with a trustworthy company.” Bradley Breakers, which employs over 40 people, now have an impressive new scrapyard consisting of a 20,000 square metre site on which they house a 3,000 sqm warehouse in which they store thousands of used parts which they have removed from cars. All parts

are recorded on a computer stock system and stacked on racking within the warehouse. You can even buy parts online. So, if you are looking for a component for your car, before you buy new, you could save time and money by going directly to Bradley Breakers. At any one time, they also have over

2000 cars on-site so they will always be able to find that elusive part from a small wheelnut to a complete gearbox or even an engine. Contact Bradley Breakers Central in English on (0034) 607 848 332 or drop an e-mail to bradleybreakerscatral1@outlook.co m. Facebook Bradley Karl Thompson. In addition, 90 trucks were immobilised for different reasons attributed to the driver or the vehicle and were prevented from continuing due to road traffic safely. As usual, the most numerous offenses have been those caused by excess driving hours, which now account for more than 13% of the total, compared to 10% in the previous season. Specifically, traffic officers have processed 2,417 complaints for violations related to driving times (2,388 for trucks and 29 for buses) and 314 for issues related to the tachograph (300 trucks and 14 buses). It should be remembered that not respecting the driving and rest times increases the risk of suffering or causing an accident since it can generate fatigue

and distractions and can be classified as a minor, serious, or very serious infraction depending on the percentage of excess in driving times or in the reduction of breaks. There is also a slight increase in both the number of complaints for speeding, with 160 drivers traveling at speeds higher than the permitted speed, of which 158 were truck drivers, and those relating to documentation, the vehicle, or the driver, which suppose that 992 drivers (924 trucks and 68 buses) circulated with administrative irregularities. On the contrary, both complaints of excess weight and poor cargo arrangement decreased (604, of which 601 were for trucks and 3 for buses), as well as for infractions related to seat belts and other safety devices (125 trucks and 3 buses). The number of truck drivers testing positive for drugs (15 in 2021 vs. 17 in 2020) and alcohol (9 vs. 11) has also decreased, while none of the bus drivers tested positive for these substances.

Imanyo Golf Society Elche CF, Relegation Relief 9 Iron Cup at Bonalba On a wet, windy, grey sky Saturday afternoon Elche CF faced Sevilla at home. The boys in Red had just suffered a moral crushing mid week extra time defeat at the feet of Barcelona, in the second leg of the Copa del Rey semi final. The first half was as uninspiring as the weather; damp, cold and without sunshine. Neither keeper was overly challenged. Sevilla enjoyed more possession, but Elche kept better form, both sides denying each other chances. It was the action of the coaches which changed the game after half time. Sevilla's Lopetegui, a former goalkeeper and the Spanish National Coach who was sacked whilst at the 2018 world cup following the announcement of his agreement to join Real Madrid after the tournament, decided to make a triple substitution. His team did not respond according to plan, and Escriba's men seized their opportunities. Firstly Lucas Boye stole the ball in midfield, breaking through the line of three defenders only to have his shot deflected by the foot of Czech born Vaclick. The second

opportunity was slickly executed. Carrillo passed to a crowded Fidel who after a quick glance, passed it across the goal to an unmarked Raul Guti to finish off with his right foot. Just 9 minutes later, Elche CF got their 2nd goal following a VAR referral. Carillo sent a header which bounced on the goal line travelling further inside the net before being caught and thrown out by Vaclick. Sevilla went into attacking mode, and Edgar Badia once again made several stunning saves, however he couldn't keep out De Jong well directed header. A fantastic but well deserved result of 2-1 for the Franjiverdes which has lifted them out of the relegation zone, just in time for their journey to the capital to play Real Madrid on Saturday 13th March at 16:15.

Another bit of good news for the boys in green and white is the arrival of a talented Argentinean left winger and part time forward called Pablo Piatti. At 31 years old and 5'5'' he has played for Estudiantes, Almeria, Valencia, Espanyol and Toronto scoring 64 goals over 360 matches since 2006. His Wikipedia entry is rather promising, listing him as a 'dynamic, explosive and fleet– footed attacker, he is known for his turn of pace, which along with his dribbling technique enables him to get past opponents and make runs into the penalty area'. As soon as spectators are allowed back into the stadiums, EuroTourGuide will once again be offering Coach Tours with Match Tickets to support Elche CF. First of all, we would like to thank Mo Chaplin for sponsoring the 9 Iron Cup, this was only our third competition of 2021 to be played due to covid and was the first time we have been back to Bonalba in over a year. Due torestrictions and courses only opening up on Monday there was no Club House open but we managed to find a bar with a nice outside terrace to have the presentation and pre-golf coffee or in the case of “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly a beer or two. The weather was a pleasant 70 degrees with a light wind, perfect for a day’s golf and the course was in reasonable condition due to the greens just been tined. The format was full handicap Stableford split into two groups, A and B with a winner from each group, one being the overall winner. The winnerof the 9 Iron Cupwas“Mr Twelve Trees” Steve Ayrefrom group A with a scoreof 37points, runnerupin groupA was“Mr Amstel“Peter Kellywith34 points. Winner from group B was “Cash Point”Alan Boyden with32 points, runner up

in group B was “Keep it in the Family” Alan Ralph with 31points. Only three nearest the pins were won, hole4 “He’s on Fire” Steve Burns, hole 8 “The Joker” Mick Billins and hole 11” Mr Five Wood” Chris Houghton, best front 9 was won with 18 points on a 3 way count back between Peter Kelly, Alan Ralph and Alan Boyden and the

eventual winner was “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly, best back 9 was won with 21 points by “Mr Twelve Trees” Steve Ayre. The Twos pot was not won so €30.00 will be in the pot next time. Picture shows Steve Ayre with the 9 Iron Cup. www.imanyogolfsociety.com imanyogolfsociety@gmail.com

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

In the week that Liverpool fans started a GoFundMe page to finance the signing of PSG’s Kylian Mbappe, you wonder whether the French World Cup winner would fancy signing for a team playing in the new Europa Conference League. King Klopp (and he will be called that until he is asked to abdicate) made seven (seven) changes to his team in a vague hope of avoiding six consecutive home defeats. After all, they were playing the mighty Fulham - as tough a match as you can get at Anfield at the moment. Last time out, there was controversy over Mohamed Salah’s reaction to being subbed early and how his agent cryptically used social media to make a point. This time, it was impossible to decide whether Salah was picked as Klopp didn’t want the aggro or whether Salah was picked to make a point in itself. If it was the latter, it was the only point Salah was getting on Sunday as it was his feeble defending that allowed Lemina to pinch the ball and score the winner. It was a goal that moved Fulham level with Brighton in the Premier League race to survival. It was also a goal that probably didn’t lead to Klopp spoofing his way to counting to six on the team coach. That said, getting those ‘six baby’ trademarks seem like the kind of forward-thinking the club could have put into its transfer dealings. It was also a goal that might have had the fans that spent money on yet another plane flyby wondering whether they had wasted their money. Unity is strength, but a couple of goals from open play is probably more in need right now. Those mentality monsters really have become mentality midgets - and it is not often I agree with Jamie Carragher.

21 wins in a row played 21 matches unbeaten away from home at the Etihad in the Manchester Derby. Peppy G’s Man City had not been behind for 19 of those matches and that lasted all of 90 seconds after United went ahead, unsurprisingly, via the penalty spot. Brunaldo will hardly get Roy Keane and Graeme Souness to pipe down by hitting the net from 18 yards, but it was better than him missing. Kyle Walker gave us a sneak preview of what he will be doing when he retires - commentary on one of the various world feeds covering the Premier League. His ‘he’s saved it!’ was very convincing as Fernandes stepped up - if not factually incorrect. Luke Shaw conjured something incredibly rare - no, not another injury - a fine goal to make it 2-0. And it was nice of Anthony Taylor to get involved in a bit of timewasting to help United in injury time. OGS becomes the first-ever United manager to win his first three away Manchester derbies - for those of you that love an absolutely pointless stat. It was the first time that both City and Liverpool have lost in the same Premier League weekend in four seasons. OK, I’ll stop now. Is Jose repeating last season’s trick? The trick I refer to is being absolutely abject to the point where fans think any kind of Champions League qualification is utterly out of the question before suddenly finding a spark and making a late charge before securing a top-four spot. Four was the number against Palace and that Gareth Bale lad looks like a bit of a player. I think he is comfortably past the amount of goals I suggested he might score this season, though many of us critics would still like him to do something against teams slightly better than Roy Hodgson’s. VAR proved to be more use to Arsenal at Turf Moor than Granit Xhaka. Their clash with Burnley had a

bit of everything - Arsenal being peak Arsenal, Sean Dyche being peak Sean Dyche and Xhaka, of course, being peak Granit Xhaka. Arsenal led before Bernd Leno sold Xhaka up a bit of a river and the Swiss swung his standing foot only at the ball - sending said ball into Chris Wood’s hip and into the net for Burnley’s equaliser. Xhaka apologised and David Luiz slipped him £10k to thank him for continuing to taking the heat off him this season. Nicolas Pepe missed the kind of chance you’d probably expect a clubrecord signing to take and Dyche was seen congratulating Arsenal players on some ‘real good screaming’ postmatch. Can Southampton and Ralph Hassenhuttl start to sleep a little easier? Chris Wilder says he would like to get rid of some players tomorrow if he could - something that’s not exactly going to make their funeral march any more enjoyable. Che Adams doesn’t score many, but when he does they are screamers - with Danny Ings going off injured again, he might need to get a couple more like that to make sure. Credit to Conor Coady, the Wolves skipper. He’s one to take personal responsibility at least 72 times in postmatch interviews. Yes, he should have scored both chances that came this

way but you have to wonder whether Romain Saiss is grateful to his captain for taking the hit in public. Saiss’ effort took this weekend’s ‘defied the laws of physics award’ when managing to get the ball up and over the bar from about six inches out. Ollie Watkins nearly broke the bar for the Villa as Jack Grealish spent Saturday afternoon sliding into some DMs. I’d written Leicester off last weekend and when Brighton scored a rare, rare goal it looked like it was going to be another nail in Brendan Rodgers’ Champions League coffin. But, it is easy to forget that Brighton are this season’s masters at walking off a pitch wondering how they’ve lost and once again they managed to find a new way to sink to a late defeat. Keeper Sanchez had been safe as houses all afternoon and just needed to see the last five minutes out before missing a cross completely - leaving Daniel Amartey to score his first goal in about 1500 years and steal three points for the Foxes. Steve Bruce’s week was far more entertaining than Newcastle’s clash with WBA. Reports of training ground scuffles with Matt Ritchie having thrown him under a bus last weekend were abound, but Bruce refuses to walk away and the single, goalless point was worth more to him than Big Sham at the end.

Las Ramblas Golf Society Yes, we’re back! Monday saw our first game back after the course had been closed for the best part of six weeks due to the latest lockdown. We eased our way back in with a gentle ‘3-2-1 Waltzer’ and it was John & Ellen Drakesmith together with Ron Luffman and ‘Albert’ who took first place with 89 points. A close 2nd, with 87, were Dave Pulling, Mike Brentnall, Ron Phipps and Benedicte Kruse. With a superb net score of 58.3 Mark Western, Ron Luffman, Olga Douglas and Mike Chapman must surely have thought they had done enough to take the top slot in Wednesday’s Texas Scramble. However with 8 birdies between them and no bogies, finishing with a fantastic net score of 55.8, the glory went to Graham Murray, Nora Betts, Paul Brown and Pete Dunn. The other highlight of the day went to John Shervell who managed to fall out of his buggy after Bryen Neal took a sharp left

turn! Friday saw us compete in a ‘Greensomes’ competition. For anyone unfamiliar with this format it is played in pairs with both players teeing off on each hole. Having then decided between them which is the better of the two shots that ball is played alternatively until the next hole. It was another good day for Paul Brown. Partnered with Dave Pulling they won the day with a net score of 62.4. Two teams then followed with 67 but after countback the nod went to Heinz Lei and Ron Phipps. When Heinz was asked afterwards why he preferred a buggy to a caddy he replied, ‘The buggy can’t count, criticize or laugh’. Pues hasta la semanaque viene Peter Reffell
