Europe could have herd immunity by July Europe could have herd immunity against Covid-19 by July, as incoming vaccines are expected to speed up the continent's vaccination roll-out, an EU Commissioner has said. The optimistic news comes even while several

countries in Europe have started reintroducing harsher restrictions as they contend with surging infections, and after mixed messages on the safety of a key vaccine. Thierry Breton, the EU's

commissioner for the internal market said, “Let's take a symbolic date: by July 14, we have the possibility of achieving immunity across the continent. We're in the home stretch, because we know that to beat this pandemic there's just one solution: vaccination. The vaccines are arriving.” More than a third of people in France are now under renewed lockdown, while frustrations over restrictions manifested in weekend demonstrations in Germany, Amsterdam, Bulgaria and Switzerland. The struggle by Europe to contain a third wave of infections has been made even more complicated by a sluggish vaccine programme and several EU nations temporarily suspending the administering of the Astra Zeneca

vaccine in response to concerns over blood clots. Most nations have since resumed using the vaccine after the European Medicines Agency found it "safe and effective". However, Astra Zeneca has delivered only 30 percent of the 90 million doses it promised the EU for the first quarter of 2021. Commissioner Breton however said he was confident that more vaccines will arrive soon, with 300-350 million doses expected between March and June. He added that 55 factories would now be producing vaccines in Europe. Meanwhile, the European Commission has proposed the creation of a Digital Green Certificate to facilitate safe free movement inside the EU during the COVID-19 pandemic. The

Fifty bars being charged with pirating La Liga games Fifty bar owners in Alicante alone are being charged with alleged intellectual property crimes, accused of unlawfully broadcasting La Liga football matches. The Prosecutor's Office has asked to bring fifty bars in Alicante to court for hacking the signal of the broadcasts of the Spanish La Liga de Fútbol. Owners are accused of crimes against intellectual property and a year in jail and the payment of a fine have been tabled by prosecutors for each of them. The broadcasts are said to have taken place before the pandemic, when the screening of big name teams would have drawn a sizeable crowd for each of the bars accused. La Liga offers its audiovisual broadcasting rights on a pay per view basis and is now taking the owners of these premises to court for the losses caused by the broadcasts being shown for free. A sting operation was mounted over the course of several weekends in late 2018 and early 2019. Most of the accusations have been bundled into two macro cases being heard at courts number five and eight in Alicante where bars from Alicante city centre, Benidorm, Torrevieja, Alcoy and Elche are expected to appear. Sources from the Prosecutor's Office specified that the complaints have been divided into two main categories: on the one hand, those who used illegal decoders to be able to offer these games

pirated broadcasts, which led to a complaint to the Central Cybercrime Brigade (BCC) of the National Police in Madrid. After drawing up a list of "suspects", cyber agents of the central brigade designed a coordinated operation throughout Spain when agents were deployed during a broadcast of the Champions League and Europa League matches.

to their clients without paying; and on the other, those who made use of private subscriptions to the pay per view platforms, but with the intention to make a public broadcast. The fee structure for public broadcasting of games is different to that for a private individual seeking to view a game in his or her own home. In some of the premises raided during the investigation, matches that were being broadcast corresponded to foreign leagues, where there was no owner of the audiovisual rights for broadcasting in Spain so the onus fell on the Prosecutor’s Office to investigate as La Liga in these instances would not stand as the plaintiff.

The investigation began as a result of La Liga’s own private investigation in which it commissioned its inspectors to carry out an audit which uncovered more than 4,000 illegal broadcasts in as many establishments. La Liga warned these establishments by letter that they had been discovered shortly after the summer of 2018. In the letter, they were invited to correct the irregularity - by legally contracting the public broadcast of football matches - and they were warned that, if they chose not to do so, action would be taken against them. Around 1,900 bars and betting establishments persisted in showing

La Liga estimates the losses caused by these pirated broadcasts throughout Spain at close to 500 million euro. The figure is believed to be based on the claim that customers who watched the illegal broadcasts in bars were potential spectators who did not pay a private subscription to see a game in which they had an interest. There are differences of opinion between the Alicante Prosecutor's Office and La Liga’s lawyers on what the damage is. While the Public Ministry estimates compensation of 260 euro for the economic damage caused to the holders of the rights; La Liga asks for 1,235 euro considering that the situation lasted for five months and not just the day of the raid.

Digital Green Certificate will be a proof that a person has been vaccinated against COVID-19, received a negative test result or recovered from COVID-19. The European Commission says it will be available, free of charge, in digital or paper format. It will include a QR code to ensure security and authenticity of the certificate. The Commission confirmed it will build a gateway to ensure all certificates can be verified across the EU, and support Member States in the technical implementation of certificates. Member States will remain responsible to decide which public health restrictions can be waived for travellers but will have to apply such waivers in the same way to travellers holding a Digital Green Certificate.

Vice-President for Values and Transparency, Věra Jourová said: “The Digital Green Certificate offers an EU-wide solution to ensure that EU citizens benefit from a harmonised digital tool to support free movement in the EU. This is a good message in support of recovery. Our key objectives are to offer an easy to use, non-discriminatory and secure tool that fully respects data protection. And we continue working towards international convergence with other partners.” Commissioner for Justice, Didier Reynders, said: “With the Digital Green Certificate, we are taking a European approach to ensure EU citizens and their family members can travel safely and with minimum restrictions this summer. The Digital Green Certificate will not

be a pre-condition to free movement and it will not discriminate in any way. A common EU-approach will not only help us to gradually restore free movement within the EU and avoid fragmentation. It is also a chance to influence global standards and lead by example based on our European values like data protection.” All people – vaccinated and non-vaccinated – should benefit from a Digital Green Certificate when travelling in the EU, says the European Commission. To prevent discrimination against individuals who are not vaccinated, the Commission proposes to create not only an interoperable vaccination certificate, but also COVID-19 test certificates and certificates for persons who have recovered from COVID-19.

Defibrillator fundraising walks There is no-doubt defibrillators save lives and facebook group ‘The Irish Community in Orihuela Costa’ has launched a campaign to fundraise for and install machines at local key locations and urbanisations. The initiative is being led by Audrey 0’Gorman and the aim is to begin by getting enough money to buy two defibrillators for La Fuente Centre. The money will be raised through two sponsored 5k walks along the canal path, taking place on Good Friday (2nd April) and Easter Saturday (3rd April). Both walks will see people meet at Ryan’s Sports Bar La Fuente Centre, at 10am for coffee, tea and registration, with the walk starting at 10.30am. A bottle of water for each walker has kindly been donated by Bea and Brand. Walkers will set off in maximum groups of four people every five minutes to ensure covid measures are adhered to.

Each person will pay 20€ to take part and will return to Evolutions Bar where a fabulous brunch with unlimited Cava or beer for two hours will be available. There will also be a grand Easter Raffle

with great prizes to help raise more money for the cause. Aurdrey said: “We’ve had a great response so far and we are really hopeful we will get enough money to get the two defibrillators for the Centre. It would also be fantastic if we can keep this idea going and help

other locations or urbanisations to raise money for defibrillators of their own. “We are working with Derek and Leigh Adamson from Ex Pat Homecare, who will help us source the lifesaving machines and provide the necessary training.” The idea has proven to be so popular that the walk on Good Friday is already fully booked, but places are available for the Saturday. Further details are available on the facebook group or from Evolution Bar. People can also make donations on the days of the walk or by getting in touch with the organisers if they are unable to take part, but wish to support the campaign. Audrey will be placing donation boxes in the bars, businesses and restaurants at La Fuente this week, to enable customers to make a donation.

Orihuela Costa Councillor for San Miguel Beaches dies of Coronavirus launches first allotment scheme The Orihuela Councillor for The Citizens Party (Cs) responsible for the Beaches of Orihuela Costa, Education and Citizen Safety, Ramón López Cabrera, has died from coronavirus. The politician was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Vega Baja Hospital at the beginning of February. Senor López Cabrera, 59, had to be admitted to the hospital on 6th February, a day after confirming he had tested positive for Covid-19, in order to better control on-going medical conditions he already had. Four days later he had to be transferred to intensive care because his prognosis was complicated. Since then, he had remained intubated and his diagnosis suggested the coronavirus was not responding to treatment. The spokesperson for Cs in Orihuela, José Aix, gave the sad news of his passing on social networks. "As spokesperson for Cs Orihuela, I see myself in the duty of communicating the most difficult news that I would ever want to tell: a little more than half an hour ago our colleague and friend Ramón López Cabrera, Councillor for Education, Beaches and Citizen Security, has passed away", the Deputy Mayor of Orihuela wrote on his Facebook page. The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana of the PP, said he is "dismayed", and also wanted to express his condolences through social networks. "Thank you Ramón for your dedication and work during these two

Residents in San Miguel de Salinas can now register for a plot in the town’s first urban municipal allotment scheme. The initiative is open to anyone who has been listed on the municipal register for at least one year and locals have until 29th March to request a plot. The ‘urban garden’, as the authorities are calling it, has a total space of 2,860m2, and has cultivable plots of varying size between 14m2 and 25m2. The land is located in the area of the SUS-A sector, in front of the West Rotunda. To start up the garden project an investment of € 8,234.54 has been made, an amount that has been 90 percent subsidised by the Alicante Provincial

years as a councillor in charge of the areas of Education, Public Safety and Beaches. We will always remember you," he said. Given that Ramón López's medical condition was showing no signs of improvement, on 18th February, the Cs spokesperson, José Aix, announced that he was assuming the areas of Education and Citizen Security while the Councillor for Human Resources, Luisa Boné, assumed responsibility for the beaches "in order to guarantee the proper functioning of these areas." After the

Council. MªPaz Pascual, the councillor behind the project, is encouraging local residents to be part of this initiative. She explained that it has two objectives "on the one hand to generate a community space, where people can carry out traditional tasks such as gardening, growing flowers and produce and agricultural work, and on the other, to offer the population the opportunity to be trained in the art of cultivation, since this will be an educational garden in which we will provide workshops and training courses aimed at promoting healthy eating habits”. Anyone interested should contact the San Miguel council.

death of their colleague the governing team will now have to reorganise the workload. López Cabrera came to politics in this mandate for the Cs. At the beginning of 2019 he left the presidency of the FAPA, which includes associations of mothers and fathers of public school students in Alicante, after having remained in office for almost 13 years, from 2006 to 2019. On 15th June 2019 he took the role of councllor. The news of his death has caused great sadness in his native district of Hurchillo.

Man dies Perimeter closure in Dolores checkpoints generate house fire more than 160 fines National Police and Guardia Civil in the Alicante province have issued more than 160 fines this weekend as checkpoints were mounted, aimed at enforcing the perimeter closure during the long weekend. A total of 168 fines were issued throughout the Alicante province for breach of covid border closures. Of these, 103 were issued in the city of Alicante (30 at the bus station to passengers breaking the travel ban without justification); 17 in Benidorm; 12 in Elche and 6 in Dénia. 75 National Police checkpoints were mounted around the province, with the participation of 414 troops and special surveillance units at train and bus stations, at tourist areas popular with A man has died in a house fire in Dolores which broke out on Sunday night. A woman also suffered burns in the incident. At 10:20pm, the Emergency Information and Coordination Center (CICU) was alerted to a fire at a house on Calle Conde de Vallellano. Ambulances were dispatched to the scene but nothing could be done to save the life of the 70-year-old man. A 78-year-old woman treated for burns and later was transferred from Dolores health centre to the Vega Baja Hospital for further treatment.

second home owners, as well as random controls at entrances to large towns. Apart from one arrest and around thirty fines for not wearing a mask, there were no other notable incidents over the long weekend. Guardia Civil manned 32 controls throughout the Alicante province between Thursday evening and Friday, the feast of San Jose when many were off work. 65 officers participated in the checkpoints, which saw over a thousand vehicles and 1,229 people inspected and 23 fines issued. Local Police also issued a series of fines ranging from breaching the border closure, not wearing a mask, having more than four people in a group and having dogs on the beach.

Torrevieja begins to install the new beach bars The successful bidders for the operation of Torrevieja’s ‘chiringuitos’ began to install their new kiosks on beaches at the weekend. Last year, Torrevieja beaches did not have this facility. Between the pandemic and a delay in the administrative process which was finalized in August 2020, as the summer season drew to a close - the

concessionaires decided to wait until this year. The period in which the chiringuitos can open is from March 15 to October 31. 10 chiringuito licences have been awarded - 22 bids were presented – and each will pay an annual fee to the town hall of at least €7,900 and another to Costas - of about €8,000.

Mercadona reveals four Spain’s coronavirus year environmental plan incidence rate rises for Supermarket chain Mercadona has detailed its game-plan for cutting plastic waste, which includes using 100 percent recycled material for its 'squeezeyour-own' orange juice bottles. The company's 'Strategy 6.25' includes cutting plastic use by 25 percent by the year 2025, using only packaging, wrapping and containers which can be recycled, and recycling all its own plastic waste. Although the orange-juice counter – where nationallyproduced, and usually very locally-grown, oranges are stuffed into a giant press for customers to fill up themselves – has long been extremely popular, some consumers had expressed their concerns about the high amount of disposable plastic it involves. Bottles are taken from the rack by the customer and filled, but even though washing and reusing them does not cause any problems with the bar code at the till, this is not generally permitted and was not recommended even before the pandemic. Suggestions of a scheme whereby customers return their used bottles and get a small discount on their juice have not been taken up, but these were redesigned a few months ago and are now 100 percent recycled plastic, meaning the issue of their

disposable nature and potential pollution is only a problem if users put them in the landfill bin rather than the yellow recycling bank. By making its bottles solely from recycled plastic rather than from newly-manufactured material, Mercadona will prevent the creation of 700 tonnes of 'new' plastic every year, thus contributing to the circular economy. In addition to their recycled bottles, Mercadona has replaced its lightweight 'weigh-your-own' fruit and vegetable bags – instead of traditional plastic, they are now made from plant fibre, meaning they are biodegradable. These can be disposed of in the 'brown bins', the latest addition to Spain's recycling bank collection, used for organic waste which is then turned into biomass for fuel or compost for the agricultural

industry. As yet, not every town in Spain has a 'brown bin', but at least, if the plant-fibre bags are disposed of in landfill, they will break down very quickly rather than taking centuries to do so as plastic does. Potato-fibre bags used in store will eventually mean a reduction of 3,200 tonnes of 'new' plastic per year. Mercadona's Strategy 6.25 is sonamed because it has six environmentally-friendly objectives it intends to meet by the year 2025 – as well as the three relating to plastic use, and adapting its stores to be more energy-efficient, they include coordination with suppliers and contractors, and waste management, which includes guiding the public on how to separate their rubbish for recycling.

first time since January Last week marked the first time that the 14-day cumulative number of coronavirus cases per 100,000 inhabitants has risen in Spain since 27th January, the day that the third wave of the pandemic peaked. Since that date this key indicator has fallen from 899.93, but last week came in at 127.91 according to the latest report (at time of going to print) from the Health Ministry. The rise from the previous day was barely 0.11 points, which statistically speaking is more of a plateau than an actual rise. But there are doubts as to whether the incidence could start to go up again in Spain or the increase simply marks an oscillation that can be expected when the values hit their minimum. The problem for the country is that these 127 cases per 100,000 inhabitants are still far from the 50 or 25 that the government set as a target, and that represent the epidemic as being under control. The end of the second wave was clear to see in the data on 10th December, when the 14-day cumulative incidence fell to 188.72 with no oscillations seen since it fell from 529.43 on 9th November. The data arrived just before San

José, Father’s Day, on Friday 19th March, which is a holiday in most parts of Spain and what’s more, Easter week is just around the corner. Inter-regional mobility is prohibited during these upcoming fiestas, but specialists still expect for there to be a rise in

cases after these holiday days. They also fear that the worsening will begin from an incidence level that is already high. Health Minister Carolina Darias called on people to be personally responsible and abide by the measures put in place.

Man stabs wife and children in Alcoy A man has stabbed his wife and two children, aged 5 and 12, before taking his own life in Alcoy at the weekend. The aggressor severely wounded the mother and daughter who were inside the house before also stabbing the five year old after finding him hiding in the doorway of the building. The child had to be transferred to Valencia’s La Fe hospital due to the seriousness of the injuries The stabbing took place just after 5.30pm at a house on Avenida Hispanidad in Alcoy, north of Alicante. According to police sources, the man is alleged to have entered the house and stabbed his wife and his twelve-year-old daughter in the presence of his motherin-law, who was not injured. After injuring the two women, man was leaving the house and found the youngest child - not yet five years old - who was seriously injured in the attack. Neighbours, who were on their balconies in nearby apartment buildings, reported that after the initial fight they thought that the woman was drunk since she emerged on to the street half naked. They then realised she was injured and immediately went to her aid, providing her with a shirt to cover up and called the police. Other people nearby tried to restrain the alleged aggressor but in the end he stabbed himself in the heart with a knife. Health services arrived at the scene and have tried to revive him but were unable to do anything to save his life. The woman and daughter are being treated at hospital for knife wounds and for shock.

Fast ferry to link Dénia Waterspout in with Balearics Torrevieja and snow The ferry company, Balearia, has allocated the Eleanor Roosevelt – the world’s first gas powered fast ferry – to the Denia – Ibiza/Mallorca route from this April. The Eleanor Roosevelt measures 123 metres in length and is 28 metres wide, making it the longest in the world in its category. The company has invested 90 million euro in this fast ferry with capacity for 1,200 passengers and 450 cars, which has become the figurehead of Balearia’s sustainability plan. Company chairman Adolfo Utor said, “We are betting on the Balearic Islands as a destination with our new flagship, a pioneering fast ferry worldwide in terms of sustainability and innovation", claiming that 20 years ago the company already “revolutionized” the Dénia-Ibiza-Palma route by incorporating high speed routes and now intends to do the same “with a ship that, in addition to being fast, is ecoefficient and smart.” Balearia say that comfort and safety have been prioritized in the design of the ship. The interiors have been adapted to the current situation, taking into account the distance between seats and wider corridors and spaces. In addition, the new catamaran boasts an array of high-tech innovations that considerably reduce movement, vibrations and noise, all with passenger comfort in mind. Technology is also at the fore

throughout the ferry, including a free platform for digital entertainment (series, movies, games and news), video surveillance of pets through webcams as well as wifi coverage. For safety, tickets are also digital and boarding passes will be sent to passengers via WhatsApp. The ship is now in the final phase of construction and testing at the Armon shipyard in Gijón. In a few weeks, she will sail to the Balearic Islands and start the Dénia route It is estimated that every year, the Eleanor Roosevelt will reduce CO2 emissions equivalent to eliminating more than 8,900 conventional passenger cars or planting almost 27,000 trees. Why Eleanor Roosevelt? According to Baleària, the name of new ferry, the Eleanor Roosevelt, is a tribute to this writer, gender equality activist and defender of the civil rights of African and Asian Americans and Second World War refugees. Roosevelt stands out for being the first president of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights and one of the driving forces behind the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Balearia claims that naming the ferry after Eleanor Roosevelt pays tribute to pioneering women in their respective fields as part of its commitment to one of the Sustainable Development Goals: equality and female empowerment.

in Alicante

After the balmy temperatures of recent weeks, the skies darkened on Thursday and we were treated to a deluge of rain. The downfall began just after nine in the morning along the coast of the Vega Baja, leaving as much as 21 litres of rain per square metre. People in Torrevieja were treated to a meteorological phenomenon when many witnessed a ‘waterspout’, a spectacular display similar to a tornado but over the sea. These waterspouts very rarely make landfall but are spectacular to watch.

Perhaps even more surprising after the recent warm weather was the return of snow and ice to the north of the Alicante province. Just two days after the official beginning of Spring, at high points such as Serrella and Sierra de Biar, temperatures plunged to 0 ° C, for the second time this year. A yellow alert for rainfall was in place all weekend. The University of Alicante’s weather lab revealed that their models indicated that it could snow in areas as low as 800 metres.

Spain becomes fifth country to legalise euthanasia Spain has joined the likes of the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and Canada, becoming one of the first countries in the world to regulate euthanasia. The lower house of parliament, the Congress of Deputies, has passed a law that was promoted by the Socialist Party (PSOE), which is governing in coalition with leftist Unidas Podemos. The legislation will come into force in three months. In order for people to request their life be ended, the affected person must “suffer a serious or incurable disease or a serious, chronic and incapacitating condition,” which causes them “intolerable suffering.” The legislation covers euthanasia, i.e. “the direct administration of a substance by the relevant medical professionals,” as well as what is known as medically assisted suicide, with the “prescription or supply to the patient by a medical professional of a substance, in a way that this can be selfadministered, to cause their own death.” With the approval of the law, Spain is joining the few countries where euthanasia is regulated. In Portugal, the Constitutional Court has opposed such a move, while in Colombia the practice is legal, according to a court ruling, but is

not regulated. A similar law is due to come into force in New Zealand in November, while in parts of the United States and Australia it is also permitted. Unlike other laws in force elsewhere, however, the Spanish legislation sets out a series of steps that could see the process take up to a month from the moment the patient requests it. This begins with a written request submitted twice over the space of two weeks. In it, the patient must express their clear will to end their life, and they must have been supplied with information about their medical condition and the alternatives that are available to them. Once the process has begun, the patient may change their mind at any

time, and once they have received authorization, they can delay its application as long as they want. Once the second request has been made, the patient’s doctor must pass the request on to the corresponding regional commission, which will appoint two professionals with no connection to the case for its analysis. The commission will then approve or reject the decision reached by these two specialists. The law does not set out the composition of this commission, which will be determined by each region, apart from it having at least seven people and including medical, legal and nursing experts. The commission has 19 days to reply to a request.

Ethical Investing From Niche to Mainstream Saving the planet and making big business more accountable are two of the greatest challenges of our lifetime, which explains why ESG – environmental, social and governance – investing is always at the centre of controversy. Poor economic stats earlier in the week caused sterling to stumble, and while the economy only contracted 2.9% (having been forecast to shrink by almost twice that much), manufacturing and industrial production delivered worse than expected results. Monthly and annual declines in manufacturing were 2.3% and 5.2%, while the broader industrial output fell 1.5% and 4.9%. The scary one was trade, with exports to Europe falling 40.7 in January and imports from the EU down by 28.8%. Brexit Minister David Frost’s argument - that preyear-end stockpiling was to blame – did not go down well with seafood producers either. However, after this slew of bad news, sterling had a clear run. Rightmove’s index of estate agents’ listings showed house prices rising 2.7% in the year to March. Gfk reported that “consumer confidence shows green shoots of recovery” with the index improving by seven points to -16, its highest level in a year. On Thursday, the Bank of England did as expected, calming any trader anxiety and leaving interest rates unchanged. Monetary policy will remain relaxed “at least until there is clear evidence that significant progress is being made in eliminating spare capacity and achieving the 2%

inflation target sustainably”. Next Wednesday’s inflation data are unlikely to bring that date any closer, though a spike up to that level is possible later this year. EURO There was little relief for the euro once again, as Europe still struggles with its rollout of Covid vaccines. Concerns surrounding the AstraZeneca jab halted the programme, but has since resumed after the EU regulator has deemed it has safe. Now supply issues are once again front and centre of the EU’s difficulties. In another display of division, the EU has yet to implement the €750 billion recovery plan agreed by the European Council eight months ago. Not a cent has been spent, and ECB board member, Isabel Schnabel, suggested this week that, even when the disbursement begins, the plan may be inadequate. Economic data was also pretty woeful. Industrial production went up by a monthly 0.8% in January. Inflation was steady at 0.9% in February, with national rates ranging from Greece’s -1.9% to the Netherlands’ 1.9%. The best news came from ZEW. Investor sentiment in Germany improved by more than five points to 76.6, within a point of last September’s high, and in the euro area it was up by more than four points at 74, fractionally ahead of the September peak.

Four arrested for posing Madrid's largest drug distribution network smashed as Red Cross workers to A joint operation between law enforcement from Spain and Colombia has dismantled what investigators describe as the largest drug distribution network in Madrid, authorities have said. Authorities conducted raids in the Spanish provinces of Badajoz, Guadalajara, Madrid, Málaga and Valencia, where they arrested at least 12 members of the gang. The drug trafficking gang largely based its operations out of Madrid and the Málaga resort town of Marbella and was led by a Moroccan man identified as Said Al Moui and his two siblings, Mohamed Al Moui and Moustafa Al Moui. The network had been under surveillance since 2020 as part of operation Toga, according to Spain's National Police. Authorities seized nearly 600 kilos of cocaine, 20 luxury vehicles, weapons and nearly $1million in cash in the raids. They reportedly purchased large crops of marijuana from growers across all of Spain and used the proceeds to expand its business by purchasing cocaine that was smuggled from Colombia and hashish that was illegally ferried over from Morocco. The marijuana that was processed from the plantations was then stored away and later shipped in packages that weighed at least 20 kilos to the Netherlands and central Europe.

The Spanish National Police learned that Moustafa Al Moui allegedly supervised the logistics of the smuggling and Mohamed Al Moui the distribution of drugs while Said acted as a frontman. The trio were aided by other relatives and associates, including a lawyer, identified as Alvaro S., who police said laundered the group's earnings and took part in some drug sales. Spanish newspaper ABC reported that Alvaro was released after posting $59,500 bail. Mohamed Al Moui and a woman identified as the wife of one of the three Moroccan men were freed after posting a bail bond between $5,900 to $9,500. Said Al Moui reportedly tested positive for COVID19. Police investigators described the gang as 'sophisticated,' having a setup that allowed them to dispatch 'huge drug quantities' of drugs under 'dexterous security' conditions, including drivers transporting the drugs who wore suits to pretend they were businesspeople. Source close to the investigation said that the Moui brothers partnered with a Bulgarian criminal organisation that was in charge of shipping the drugs to central Europe. Instead of the usual way of selling the cocaine by the kilogram, police said that the gang found an easier way

of distribution by dividing it into packages of 370 to 390 grams, which were sold for around $11,950 each. Illegal gains Authorities impounded 16 apartments and around $835,000 in cash. While raiding a home in Madrid, the cops discovered almost $273,900 hidden over the ceiling panel of a bathroom. An inspection of a second home in the Spanish capital led authorities to 150 kilos of cocaine which was concealed inside a section of the apartment's floor. The police also confiscated an additional 200 kilos from a third dwelling. Authorities seized several firearms and sharp weapons, including three Japanese swords, that belonged to the alleged drug traffickers. Law enforcement agents also seized 20 vehicles, including six that featured secret compartments. Authorities also impounded a Ferrari worth $298,000, a Mercedes C63 priced at $297,600 and a Mercedes GL V8 valued at $180,000. As part of the same operation, the Spanish National Police's Special Operations Group shut down the attempt of two members of the drug trafficking organization who sought to recover a container with cocaine delivered from Colombia. The agents discovered 208 packages of cocaine totalling 230 kilos.

rob the elderly

Four people have been arrested by Guardia Civil for posing as Red Cross workers in order to gain access to the homes of the elderly and subsequently, steal from them. The victims lived in Torrevieja, Novelda and Monforte del Cid. Three women and a man were detained by police after officers found they gained access to victims’ homes by posing as Red Cross workers. The four are being charged belonging to a criminal organisation, theft inside the home, and fraud. In addition, two of them are also charged with a crime against road safety for driving without ever having obtained a driving license, according to information provided by the General Directorate of the Guardia Civil. Officers began the investigation on July 27 after receiving a complaint in Novelda from the son of a couple in their 80s, residing in the Alicante town of Monforte del Cid. The couple had had jewellery stolen from their home. The

man claimed that two women had entered the house posing as Red Cross workers, with the excuse of needing a glass of water. Soon after, the Guardia Civil received other similar complaints, all with the same modus operandi and all against elderly victims. Officers began their investigations around the geographical area of the first reports, but soon widened their net to include Torrevieja and even Murcia. In one report from Torrevieja, the gang are believed to have stolen jewellery and valuables, as well as a credit card, which they used to withdraw 500 euro in cash at an ATM near the victim’s home. Officers investigating the crimes discovered that this was an organized network made up of four people: a 25year-old man, the getaway driver, as well as three women, aged between 23 and 43, who made the ‘house calls’. All of them are of Spanish nationality.

Sunday 28th March – Channel 4, 3.20 pm

The spaceship, Starship Avalon, in its 120-year voyage to a distant colony planet known as the "Homestead Colony" and transporting 5,258 people has a malfunction in one of its sleep chambers. As a result one hibernation pod opens prematurely and the one person that awakes, Jim Preston (Chris Pratt) is stranded on the spaceship, still 90 years from his destination.

Rango is a pet chameleon always on the lookout for action and adventure, except the fake kind, where he directs it and acts in it. After a car accident, he winds up in an old western town called Dirt. What this town needs the most is water, but they also need a hero and a sheriff. The thirsty Rango instantly takes on the role of both and selfishly agrees to take on the case of their missing water.

Spain looking at Europe’s first fourday work week Orihuela For years, advocates for a four-day workweek have argued that a compressed schedule could lead to more productivity and a better worklife balance - a perspective that has gained credence in some countries amid the coronavirus pandemic, which has wrought drastic changes to the way people work. Spain is about to find out firsthand whether it works. The country is poised to become one of the first to experiment with a 32-hour workweek, which would allow workers to spend less time at the office without any change in pay. Exactly what the pilot program will look like is unclear: An individual with the industry ministry told the Guardian that nearly every detail was still up for negotiation, including how many companies will be involved and how long the experiment will last. The test run was proposed by Más País, a left-wing party that has argued that longer hours don’t necessarily lead to higher productivity, and it is now in talks with the government to figure out the exact details of the arrangement. According to Spanish media outlets, the pilot program is intended to reduce employers’ risk by having the government make up the difference in salary when workers switch to a fourday schedule. “Spain will be the first country to undertake a trial of this magnitude,” Héctor Tejero, of Más País, said. “A pilot project like this hasn’t been undertaken anywhere in the world.” The experiment is expected to cost about 50 million euros and last three

years. According to reports, it could begin as early as this fall. Although the push for a four-day workweek was already gaining support before the pandemic, the radical upending of office life has made the idea seem more viable to politicians around the world. So has the fact that furlough programs mean many employees are already being paid to work fewer hours a week - or not at all. In May, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern suggested employers should consider the switch to a four-day week “if that’s something that would work for your workplace.” The crisis has also led to an increased push to address burnout and allow more flexibility for employees at a time when job duties frequently spill over into home life. Until last year, workers in many European nations benefited from a “right to disconnect” that barred emails and phone calls after the end of the workday. But the switch to remote work has tested those limits, and some politicians feel there needs to be a sharper line drawn between work life and home life. For employees juggling work with taking care of young children, even a standard 40-hour week can be overwhelming. Switching to a 32-hour

reopens the parks across the municipality

workweek would mean “putting mental health at the centre of the political agenda,” Iñigo Errejón, a leader of Más País, wrote on Twitter over the weekend. Large corporations like Microsoft and Shake Shack have experimented with four-day workweeks in the past, but Spain’s pilot program would be much larger in scale. Más País calculates that the budget should be enough to allow around 200 companies to take part. That means that anywhere from 3,000 to 6,000 workers would have regular threeday weekends. Spain was one of the first countries in western Europe to limit the workday to

eight hours, but recent studies have found Spanish workers put in more hours than many of their European counterparts, with no corresponding increase in productivity. Proponents of a four-day workweek argue that allowing more people to work fewer hours could go a long way in addressing the high unemployment rates that have plagued so many countries throughout the pandemic. But many business leaders have been less than enthusiastic about cutting hours without cutting pay, which is where Spain’s proposal to cover some of the costs comes in.

The Department of Infrastructure of the Orihuela City Council has reopened all the parks in the municipality, after being closed due to sanitary restrictions of the pandemic. Ángel Noguera has requested compliance by users with all the relevant COVID regulations, such as use of a mask, keeping a physical distance, using hand sanitiser when using children's play equipment and not exceeding the limit of the people gathered, which at present is four.

Guardians of Stone expo to visit Torrevieja A travelling exhibition, staged by the MARQ archaeological museum of Alicante, is set to visit Torrevieja following an agreement between curators and Torrevieja Town Hall. The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, alongside vice president and deputy for Culture of the Provincial Council, Julia Parra, signed an agreement so that this fascinating exhibition will be displayed at the “Vista Alegre” until May ‘Guardianes de Piedra. Los castillos de Alicante’ The expo, entitled Guardians of Stone. The castles of Alicante will arrive next month at the Vista Alegre Exhibition Hall, where it can be visited until May. The installation reviews the powerful legacy that the province boasts, with more than 300 castles, fortifications, coastal towers, refuge towers, forts and batteries. Parra is looking forward to the exciting exhibition, telling the press this week that "from next month until May, Torrevieja residents will be able to visit one of the selections of the Archaeological Museum that has had

the most success among the public, undoubtedly spectacular because it [is] of great historical and cultural value." Mayor Eduardo Dolón, thanked the

curators of ‘Guardianes de Piedra’ saying, “It is a privilege that both Torrevieja residents and tourists who come to our city from all over the Valencian Community can come here to see this important exhibition, with the guarantee that they will have all

the necessary measures to enjoy a safe cultural experience.” ‘Guardianes de Piedra’ was first inaugurated at MARQ in 2015 with a show that won the National Emporia Gold Award for the best travelling exhibition of the year. The exhibition pays tribute to the extraordinary historical and architectural heritage of the Alicante region through a careful selection of fortresses, organized as different routes, which allows the visitor to trace their own path to discover these monuments. The exhibition design uses new technology to bring its content to all audiences. For example, it includes a model of the province of Alicante with a selection of the fortifications manufactured by a 3D printer. For greater accessibility for all groups, QR codes are used throughout the expo to expand and develop on the information by bringing the visitor to relevant section of the MARQ website and help improve understanding of the piece in question. The exhibition is currently in transit, having traveled so far to Villena, Xixona, Orihuela, Crevillent, Calp, La Vila Joiosa, Cocentaina, Guardamar del Segura and Monforte del Cid.

Third dead dolphin in two weeks appears on Torrevieja coast On Wednesday at 6.45am a local resident found the remains of a striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba) on the coastline of the San Roque neighbourhood in Torrevieja. Torrevieja Town Hall and the municipal biologist activated the civic protocol which means that the body was removed by town hall workers directly to municipal storage, and from there was removed by the Department of the Environment to undergo autopsy at the Universitat Politècnica València.

As reported by the town hall, this is the third such finding in just two weeks, which raises suspicions of a new viral epidemic that these animals are said to suffer periodically.

Boat with 14 occupants arrives in Pilar de la Horadada In the early hours of Monday morning, a boat was intercepted off the coast of Pilar de la Horadada with fourteen people on board, all men and apparently of Algerian origin. The boat was sighted when it was detected several miles off the coast at around eleven o'clock at night by the Comprehensive External Vigilance Service (SIVE) of the Guardia Civil. The

boat made landfall at around 1.30am at the Costa de Conde, in Pilar de la Horadada, where armed patrols were awaiting to detain its occupants. The men were transferred to the port of Alicante to be treated by the Red Cross and undergo PCR tests, as set out by the anti-COVID-19 protocol. All have been made available to the National Police for processing.

Fall in cases allows health centres to increase facetoface appointments by up to 50% The health centres of the Alicante province are gradually returning to normal after the third wave of the pandemic once again forced the suspension of follow-ups on chronically ill patients and for medical staff to carry out the vast majority of consultations over the phone. In recent days, face-to-face appointments have been increasing and already represent, on average, 50% of the total appointments. That’s according to data collected from the various health centres around the province, as well as from the Valencian Society of Family Medicine. At the worst moment of the third wave, eight out of ten patients were attended to by telephone, and face-to-face consultations were reserved only for those cases in which an examination of the patient was essential. At the moment the first contact with the GP is still by phone, but there are many patients who, after this call, are summoned in person to the health centre. The delay in obtaining a telephone appointment has also decreased. At the worst point of the pandemic, it was more than 20 days in many health centres. Now, the average wait at most

health centres is a few days or a week. Many of the auxiliary clinics that closed in January are also being reopened in order to focus resources on health centres. In some health departments, such Alicante, vaccination programmes are being removed from health centres to avoid overcrowding and to guarantee more availability of face-to-face consultations. The same is being done with PCR tests in areas such as the General Hospital of Alicante, where they are carrying out PCR tests at the field hospital in order to free nurses working at health centres from having to carry out this task and instead focus on normal duties. With the return to normality, the priority is being given to the chronically ill, especially if they are also elderly. President of the Valencian

Society of Family and Community Medicine, María Ángeles Medina, is happy that the normal rhythm of consultations is being resumed. "We really wanted to see our patients again because the covid came to monopolize 80% of our consultations in the third wave." Medina believes that the impact from the lack of follow-up with the chronically ill during the third wave, as well as the lack of in person visits will not take long to show its face. Her concern is, for example, with diabetes patients, this gap in treatment may manifest later in the form of kidney problems, eye problems, strokes, etc. The positive, she says "is that many patients who were very dependent on their doctors have become empowered and it is necessary to ensure that this autonomy in health is maintained."

Food hacks: the secret to success Fast track to kitchen success with the best-ever hacks for food storage, quick meals, baking, barbecuing and more. These tried and tested tips will have you cooking like a pro in no time...

Omelettes aren't the only microwave marvel you can make for breakfast. To make scrambled eggs, add a dash of milk and seasoning to beaten eggs before a minute and a half in the microwave on high, stirring midway through. It’s the perfect hack to avoid washing-up pots and pans. Save overripe bananas for banana bread If you end up with black or brown bananas, fear not. Overripe bananas are best for use in baking as they're sweeter and easier to mash into batter. Banana bread is a favourite for using the fruit. To reduce the saturated fat in your favourite muffin recipe, you can use three ripe, very well-mashed bananas, instead of around 8tbsp (half a cup) of butter.

Use cling-film to make perfect poached eggs If your attempts at poached eggs always end in a disaster, follow this top tip. Lay a piece of cling-film (plastic wrap) in a bowl, lightly oil the inside and crack in an egg. Gather up the sides of the cling-film and tie it tightly on top. Add to boiling water for two to four minutes, depending on the size of the egg and how soft you want it. Save time with an omelette in a mug Cooking an omelette in the microwave is quick and simple. Whisk two eggs, seasoning and some grated cheese or chopped ham, pour into a greased mug and microwave on high for one minute. Stir, and cook again on high for another minute.

Achieve gooey cookies by taking them out early If soft and gooey chocolate cookies make you melt, you need to start removing them from the oven a couple of minutes early. Don't worry if they don't look ready yet, they will continue to cook and harden up once they've come out. Add white beans to smoothies for protein More blander-tasting beans like cannellini or butter beans are perfect in a smoothie, as they add protein and make it more filling. Try whizzing a small handful along with a banana and berries to make an energising breakfast drink.

Use mashed avocado instead of mayo If you're trying to avoid butter or mayo, use a thin layer of puréed avocado in sandwiches instead. It goes particularly well with a tuna or chicken salad filling. Squash potatoes to make them extra crisp The trick to crispy potatoes is to increase spuds’ surface area. When you make the surface area larger, more of it is exposed to the heat. To do this, squash potatoes lightly with a fork. This technique works whether you are cooking them in the frying pan or the oven. Add pesto to mash for flavour Mash doesn't need to be plain. You could stir through pesto for an Italian twist or add cream, spring onions, parsley and thyme to make this recipe for traditional Irish champ. Alternatively, swap half of the potatoes for blitzed cauliflower next

time you make mashed spuds – you'll not only be adding another portion of veg, you'll be giving it a lovely, light velvety texture and sweetness. Cook rice in stock for extra flavour Even if you're cooking plain rice as an accompaniment to a dish, you can liven it up by cooking it in stock. Throw in a bay leaf, a sprig of rosemary, some grated ginger or garlic. You could also fry the rice in a little oil before adding the water or stock to bring out the flavour. Bulk out dishes with lentils If you’re cooking on a budget, lentils are a great way to make meals go further. Bulk out meat sauces, soups and salads with the legume for a filling dish. They’re

also a great source of fibre and protein. A winner all round. Add anchovies for umami Instead of adding a fishy flavour to dishes, anchovies add umami, a savoury, salty taste. Always keep a tin to hand to marinate lamb, make a puttanesca sauce or whizz into a salad dressing. Speed up BBQ with foil To get meat cooking quicker, you can try wrapping it in foil with a little water or apple juice. The steaming effect from the liquid speeds up the cooking process. Prevent soggy salad with paper towels A bag of salad leaves is always one of the first things to lose its freshness. Make it last longer by opening the bag as soon as you’re home from the shop and removing any soggy or wilted leaves. Pop a couple of clean paper towels in to absorb excess moisture, then clip the bag shut.

Stuck in the UK After living for 20 years in Spain, and getting plenty of cash in hand work cleaning holiday apartments, my girlfriend and I had no choice but to move back to the UK at the end of last year when we could no longer afford to live in Spain. We took a chance and made sacrifices, and were doing great until the virus hit. Neither of us imagined that the holiday business would disappear overnight. We were in rented accommodation that we'd been in for years, and had little savings to rely on. We are now in the UK. We've both got jobs and have rented a house in Yorkshire, but life is grim and we long to come back to Spain. However, we find that Spain will not have us back unless we can confirm that we are residents. Unfortunately, we never bothered becoming residents as we didn't think we would need to. We are now in receipt of our old age pensions from England, and can afford to come back to Spain to live. England is so bleak, cold and depressing and we long to come home to the sun. I would advise you to have a video link consultation with a Solicitor in Spain. You need to tell the Lawyer that now you are in receipt of your pensions, and ask if they can help you get residencia. You tell me that your house rental contract is still current so you could ask the Lawyer if this will make a difference. You will also need to make sure you have had the required vaccinations and Covid tests so you can return to Spain, and also make sure you have the correct medical documentation for entering Spain - your Spanish solicitor will be able to help you with this. Spain bans covid fighting nasal spray Spanish drug regulators have banned the sale of a readilyavailable nasal spray touted as a potential coronavirus treatment. The Taffix spray, sold in a pack of four, was credited with preventing dozens of Jews from catching Covid at a religious festival in Israel last year. But despite its promise, Spain's medical regulator, the Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS), has banned its sale on the basis there was 'not enough clinical evidence' it was effective. The UK's medicines regulator said it was also reviewing the nasal spray. Experts say unproven Covid remedies may give people false confidence to be riskier in their behaviour, such as visiting a vulnerable relative. A study by Nasus, the Israeli biomedical firm which makes the spray, and scientists from the University of Haifa and the University of Virginia, followed 243 people who attended a Jewish new year festival last September in the city of Bney Brak, 6.3km east of Tel Aviv. None of the 81 Jews who used the spray properly got infected, compared to 16 in the other group who did.

The spray - which provides enough for 200 pumps in each bottle - is said to coat the inside of the nose in an acidic powder that makes it difficult for viral particles to penetrate. Despite not being subject to the same rigour as a controlled scientific study, it provides one of the largest realworld tests of the sprays – which some scientists believe could play an important role in fighting the

pandemic. However, Nasus Pharma warned the nasal spray is not a substitution for face masks or social isolation and should be used as an 'addition'. Other lab-based studies have shown it can stop the virus from replicating in petri dishes, but there has been little real-world

research on its efficacy. It is not known if the firm is planning on conducting rigorous scientific trials to prove whether their nasal spray works. Taffix’s spray has no known side effects, according to an FAQ on its website – but may cause a ‘tingling or burning sensation in the nose’. The spray prevents infection by capturing the virus in the nose and coating it. This means the virus cannot escape and renders the it inactive and harmless. The researchers believe using the spray four times a day will be enough for general protection. However, it is safe enough to be applied every 20 minutes if required, for example, if a user is in a high-risk environment. Other scientists are also developing nasal sprays to fight off Covid, including a team at the University of Birmingham. Their spray - which has not been named - has been in development since April last year and could hit the shelves as early as this summer. It is made from ingredients that are already approved for medical use in the UK, meaning it is safe for humans and does not require further clearance.

Storm Filomena was historic in every sense. Not only because it buried large areas of the centre of the peninsula under 60 centimetres of snow, but for the effort made by the State, autonomous communities, and municipalities to help those affected by the snowfall and bring back to normality to very wide areas of the national geography. As with every major incident on the roads, there are lessons to learn, and Filomena was no exception. These are seven lessons that Filomena and her snowfall have taught the DGT. 1: LEFT LANE: FOR EMERGENCIES One lesson from Storm Filomena and its historic snowfall - the biggest since 1971, according to Accuweather - is the importance of the left lane. Or more specifically, the importance of leaving that lane free in an emergency. The DGT has learned to such an extent the need to keep the left lane free in the event of serious incidents, that, in the words of Pere Navarro –Director General of Traffic–, “we are studying including the obligation to leave the left lane free in certain cases of problems in the circulation” in a forthcoming modificationof the Traffic Regulations. 2: ONLY ESSENTIAL DISPLACEMENTS: CHANGING THE MESSAGE Pere Navarro, General Director of Traffic, commented, when taking stock of the episode of snowfall due to the storm Filomena, that “the message in which we ask citizens to stay at home and that they only make the essential movements, because it is not understood. It is the only way to understand that shopping malls were full of people on snow Friday until closing time”. For this reason, the DGT will study how to specify this type of messages that are launched in the days prior to these episodes, so that they are clearer and more unequivocal. 3: THE IMPORTANCE OF WARNING ... TO PREPARE It is summarised by a phrase from Civil Protection: "Anticipation is the best tool," in a statement. Thus, on December 31, 2020, AEMET (State Meteorological Agency), 8 days before the snowfall! Reported the arrival of the storm Filomena and announced the possibility of heavy snowfall. This note was ratified on January 3 and became a special notice on 5. In addition, on January 7 the alert was raised to red level in much of the Community of Madrid. This early warning of the storm “allowed us –explains Jorge Ordás, deputy director of Mobility Management and Technology of the DGT– to prepareourselves and have a greater capacity to react, reorganize and reinforce the troops”, with a modification of work shifts and days off of the essential maintenance personnel and control centres of the DGT. Also, the Traffic Group of the Guardia Civil made a collection of the necessary material to face its services (vehicles with chains, shovels, salt ...) and the personnel to cover them. On January 5, Civil Protection notified all the autonomous communities, brought together the Risk Assessment Unit –with AEMET, DGT and the General

Directorate of Roads– and activated the pre-emergency phase of the State Emergency Plan –approved on 15 December. For its part, the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda placed 1,300 snow ploughs and 3,000 operators at strategic points. In addition, the AEMET notices were widely reported in the press and were repeated in numerous interviews with authorities (36) and government ministers and delegates (300), which contributed to many drivers preparing their vehicles or postponing their journeys. And, as a DGT mantra says, "an informed driver is a safer driver" and in this line, Jorge Ordás points out, "dissemination and communication are key." 4: IF YOU LEAVE THE VEHICLE: CONTACT According to data from the emergency services SUMMA 112, about 1,500 vehicles had been stopped on the roads and highways in the Community of Madrid alone due to the storm Filomena on January 8 - and according to the Guardia Civil – there were more than 4,374 during the entire Filomena episode. Many vehicles whose occupants were transferred by the Guardia Civil with their vehicles to authorised places had to be removed by the Guardia Civil after cleaning the roads and taken to deposits –in Madrid, the transfer of a facility was negotiated with the City Council–, but it would have been easier for everyone to be able to notify the owners that they could remove them from where they had been trapped. The Guardia Civil should not have moved them nor should each owner go to the warehouse where they were left. The problem is that there was no way to contact them. For this reason, it is being evaluated how to articulate that, when a driver must abandon a vehicle on the road due to a justified circumstance, he must leave a contact telephone number visible from the outside. 5: PRIORITIES WHEN AVOID DISBURSING. TO COLLAPSES The heavy snowfall caused by Filomena made clear the importance of logistics centres. In fact, the enormous flow of trucks coming and going to the logistics platforms for the distribution of goods was one of the main objectives of the measures to avoid the collapse of the roads. Thus, the DGT and Guardia Civil allowed the passage of trucks on the roads that remained open or were being opened depending on the destination. “When we started to stop trucks”, explains Colonel Monzón, “we let those whose destinations were north, where the snowfall did not affect the roads, but we bagged those who went to the logistics platforms in Madrid”. Thus, the double objective of not interfering with the supply of areas not affected by the storm and not blocking roads affected by ice and snow was achieved. Monzón also highlights the importance of links:“On Sunday, the main roads in the most affected areas were clean, but it was necessary to keep trucks until the links with these roads could be cleaned, otherwise heavy vehicles could slip and collapse again. routes”. Jorge Ordás - Deputy Director of

Mobility Management of the DGT highlighted the coordination effort necessary to carry out a disbursement with priorities, with more than 11,000 trucks stopped at 127 points: “They are disbursed depending on the destination and the state of the roads. This prevents the collapse from reproducing itself. For this, it is necessary to gather and manage the possible destinations, the state of the roads, etc.” 6: TRUCKS: RETAINING TO AVOID CHAOS At its peak - and never better said with a snowfall - the Guardia Civil had collected, at the request of the DGT, just over 11,300 trucks, in a total of 127 areas, "with thecoordination effort that this implies, explains Jorge Ordás, DGT's Deputy Director of Mobility and Technologies–, but also to supply blankets, food, water and other urgent matters to the truckers”. However, Ordás is satisfied with the result of the measure, since, he explains, “a stopped truck blocks a road”. "A car that stops - explains Benito Monzón, colonel of the Madrid Traffic sector of the ATGC we can remove it, but a truck collapses the road". In addition, according to both those responsible, to move these vehicles you have to get to the place where a grua has stopped, stop many vehicles and move the truck, which with such a heavy snowfall and many cars stuck behind, complicates the operation. “For this reason, as soon as the yellow level for snow was decreed, we decided to stop the trucks,” says Jorge Ordás. In addition, the Deputy Director of Mobility Management believes that it is better to carry out the bagging in the large winter road car parks (“because since then it is necessary to manage the arrival, departure and supplies of aid and food, it is more operative that they are few and large”), although when these were full it was necessary to use service areas and even gas station parking lots. He also believes that "they must be somewhat far from where the snowfall occurs, at least 50 kilometres before where the problems occur" , although this causes inconveniences:"The truckers, in the pockets, do not see snow and complain that they are being held back, they always have a friend who tells them that later on it has not snowed and there are pressures to allow them to continue traveling," explains Ordás. 7: DEPENDING ON THE PRIORITY PRODUCT: SHIPMENTS Although the confinement decreed in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic already revealed how essential the transport of food and merchandise was, storm Filomena has highlighted the need to prioritise shipments. For example, the DGT established an order of priority when facilitating and allowing the passage, when a road was semiclear, of certain transports. Thus, the transport of salt, fluxes and pharmaceutical products were among those determined as priorities, according to Jorge Ordás, deputy director of Mobility Management. And, of course, the shipments made of the vaccines against Covid-19, which were also in the first order of priority.

Top Gear presenter and motor sport driver Sabine Schmitz dies Sabine Schmitz – the German professional racing driver who presented on BBC motoring programme Top Gear from 2016 to 2020 – has died at the age of 51 after a battle with cancer. A legend of the sport, Schmitz was dubbed the “Queen of the Nürburgring”, the legendary racing track at which she became an infamous "Ring Taxi" driver, shuttling fans around the 21 km circuit at high speeds. The iconic German track revealed the news of her death in a statement, saying it had lost “its most famous female racing driver. "Sabine Schmitz passed away far too early after a long illness. We will miss her and her cheerful nature. Rest in peace Sabine!" Scmitz grew up around motor racing from a young age. She was raised in west Germany in the basement of her parents’ restaurant, which was located within the perimeter of the Nürburgring Nordschleife, the racing circuit that loops around the village of Nürburg. Her first taste for competitive driving came in the form of drives in the family car around the track with her two sisters. Her first major wins came in 1996 and 1997 when she and codriver Johannes Scheid won the 24 Hours Nürburgring, a 24-hour annual touring car and GT endurance racing event that takes place on the track. Significant wins in her cars of choice (BMWs

and Porsches) came in 1998, 2006, 2007, 2008 and Schmitz quickly became a notable name in motor sport. She gained more widespread attention with the public as one of the two BMW M5 "ring taxi" drivers around the Nürburgring; she estimated that she had completed laps of the Nürburgring more than 20,000 times over the course of her career. Schmitz’ unusual claim to fame as ‘the fastest taxi driver in the world” coupled with her charisma led to her becoming an occasional motor sport

commentator in Germany known for her cheerfully dry delivery, and in 2006, she began hosting German motoring show German television D Motor. She first appeared on Top Gear in 2004, besting then presenter Jeremy Clarkson in a time-trial around the Nürburgring by 47 seconds, and gleefully quipping she could beat his time “in a van”. When trying to film the segment, the film crew were unable to keep up, and had to turn to the skills of a Jaguar test driver to pilot the cameramounted car to follow the action.

Elche CF, Travelled Twice Last week, Elche CF played two away games, one of which they lost and the other which they drew. On Wednesday the Franjiverdes took on Sevilla in the final of their two postponed starts of the season matches. The teams met only last month at the Martinez Valero when Elche CF was the 2-1 victor. Escriba continues to improve his side, who knew what to do, when and how, although their concentration and energy slipped towards the end of each half, a fault which Sevilla took full advantage of. The first half was more or less a monologue by Sevilla interspersed with sparks of brilliance by Josan, Boye and Carrillo, none of which turned to gold. Just two minutes before the half time whistle, the Moroccan En-Nesyri, sprung high to receive a strong cross from Suso, and sent a stronger header past the normally unbeatable Badia. The second half was a different game, Elche enjoyed more possession and more opportunities and were wanting their first point away from home under Escriba.

Sevilla seemed to tire and it was only an uncharacteristic move by the Italian and Argentinian International Franco Vazquez which provided the final nail in the coffin. With his back to the goal he stopped a through ball with his left, bounced it off his right and then back healed towards the goal mouth, where it sneaked past the goalie to create the final scoreline of 2-0. Then, on Saturday Elche travelled to Madrid where they fought for a draw against Getafe and survived due to their guardian angel Badia. Pere Milla, following an injury to his hand after just 17 seconds, opened the scoring on the 20th minute. Elche were the better side during the first half but as always, they seemed to step off the gas towards the end, allowing Getafe a free run before the whistle. This invigorated the home side and

once play resumed the 23 year old Turk, Enes Unal, scored on the hour. The pink clothed referee, Hernandez Hernandez, made his second controversial decision and awarded a penalty to Getafe. Angel, a former Elche CF player from 2010-2012, stepped up. Despite a well placed shot, the hand of the Elche guardian angel, Edgar Badia, made another point altering save for a 1-1 draw. Following a break for Internationals, Elche CF will play at Home on Easter Sunday 4th April at 16:15 against Real Betis. As soon as spectators are allowed back into the stadiums, EuroTourGuide will once again be offering Coach Tours with Match Tickets to support Elche CF. Abbey Anglers After a forced absence of several weeks, we again started match fishing in the Valencia region on Tuesday the 16th of March. The weather was set fair and we thought we were in for a great days fishing, this was in fact not the case. The venue was the El Bosquet complex near Crevillente and we had a great attendance of 25 anglers. All covid rules and regulations were followed and the match was run in a very safe environment. We fished a section of 4 on the new section A1 to 7 and the rest were spread about on pegs 17 to 40 all in sections of 3. Winner on the day was the Wizard of Humberside or Keith Hirst to his friends. Keith drew the end peg on the new section, peg 7. After a slow start he caught several carp using the pole and the new Fjukahookable pellets for 11.52kg. Second on the day was ex World Veterans Champion, Harry Billing who fished 4mm expander pellets on the long pole on peg 33 for 10.78kg. Harry is trekking back to England this week and he will return in the winter.

Third was John “please don’t draw me on the old back channel or I´m going home” Waples, with 9.68kg from peg 31. He again fished the pole towards the far bank. Overall the match fished extremly hard with several dry nets and some very low weights. Other section winners were Ian Brown 4.62kg, Richard Wood 1.10kg, Nick Bastock 1.72kg, Richard Smith 5.56kg and finally Ricahrd King with 7.14kg. The pairs competition was won by Keith and Richard Smith with 17.08kg. Next weeks match will also be at this complex and we will be fishing pegs A1 to 7 and 26 to 40. Pegs 17 to 25 and 8 to 16 will be available to pleasure anglers.

37

Rods N Reels The Following day Rods N Reels visited the same complex. Only 15 anglers took part and they fished pegs 26 to 49. Winner on the day was John Waples with 15kg, 2nd was Alan Priest with 11kg and third was Richard Smith with 10kg. Sorry but these are the only details I have as I did not attend the match. Next week numbers permitting Rods N Reels will be fishing pegs A1 to 16 , please book on with Bill Reade to secure your place. TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Ah, the magic of the FA Cup. The quarter-finals where winning teams guarantee a trip to Wembley. The kind of game that can give a confidence boost when you are absolutely rubbish in the league (Sheffield United and Southampton), be a pleasant distraction from the pressure of trying to win promotion (Bournemouth), be a way to actually win a trophy (Everton, Chelsea, Leicester and Manchester United) or keep the unspoken dream of a quadruple alive (Manchester City). Mixed in with a bit of Premier League action, there was enough variety in the weekend football to help us all forget of the upcoming and utterly pointless international break. Before we dive into it all feet first, let’s quickly come together to reflect on the week before the weekend. Gareth Southgate picked his England squad and decided that a Premier League and Champions Leaguewinning right-back wasn’t good enough for the Three Lions. Admittedly, England are over-stocked in that position, but still. And if ‘form’ is the reason, how on Earth has Eric Dier slipped in ahead of the likes of Ezri Konsa and Ben Godfrey? The European draws took place with Pep’s Man City clear favourites to see off Borussia Dortmund whilst getting the opportunity to live scout Erling Haaland before snapping him up in the summer. Tommy Tuchel reckons Chelsea should be feared in the competition so let’s see if Porto are particularly papping it in the ‘teams Jose Mourinho has managed’ derby. Liverpool face Real Madrid in the battle of league champions that are nowhere near as good this season. In the Europa League, Tottenham’s exit means that Jose has pretty much got to win the League Cup to keep his job for next season and Arsenal will play

Manchester United in that fantasy world where Arsenal get to the Europa League final rather than losing to Slavia Prague. And, to the actual action. Jonathan Woodgate has done very well to get sacked by Middlesbrough and end up in temporary charge of Bournemouth in the Championship, but it was little surprise that Southampton were able to remember they have been a very good side at some point this season for long enough to sweep the Cherries aside. Nathan Redmond gave the classic ‘too good for the Champ but probably not good enough for the Premier League’ performance as Ralph’s side booked a Wembley slot with a 3-0 win. Everton’s clash with Man City was a test of patience - not just for the viewer who had to watch the first 82 minutes but for City who eventually managed to break Ancelotti’s side down. Mind you, it helps if you have KDB on the bench and a midfielder scoring more goals than most of the strikers in the league. Whilst knocking the Toffees out of the cup, the quadruple hopefuls are now the favourites to sign Villa’s Jack Grealish for £100m+ - and as we all know, that will work out really well for Grealish. City will finance this move by ripping out 1500+ seats at the Etihad and replacing them with more LED advertising displays. You cannot deny, it’s a creative solution to the fact they never sell the stadium out.

When you are as absolutely garbage as Sheffield United this season, it’s not going to help if you score an own-goal to put Chelsea in the lead. The last team to score against Tuchel’s side was Luton Town way back in an earlier round of the FA Cup and given that Sheffield United have scored about six goals all season there was never going to be a way back. Take David McGoldrick’s miss as exhibit A. More interesting was the midweek chat about Chelsea being interested in Sergio Aguero if he leaves City. I mean, I guess Lampard went the other way. Aguero is believed to have an offer from the maybe-becoming-less-crazy-nowLaporta-is-back Barcelona. I’d want to see exactly how less crazy the Catalans are before heading there though. All this means that Tammy Abraham will be on his way - the big clue being that they’ve stopped the contract talks at the Bridge. Take the hint, Tammy. Get yourself over to West Ham. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to be judged on his league position, not his trophy haul - which is great for him after Leicester City dumped them out of the FA Cup. Leicester took the lead after Fred cleverly linked up with Iheanacho who rounded Henderson to score. The best Donny van Beek has done for United since signing from Ajax is letting the ball go through his legs, which allowed Greenwood to level but it was Youri Tielemens who took advantage of the red sea parting before drilling home the winner. Both Chelsea and City would have been celebrating that result - the winner

Las Ramblas Golf Society Benedicte Kruses the 1st Major! Monday saw us play the ‘original’ Counter Game. This is the one where you find out how many scores are to count only after the hole has been played. With 99 points it was Ron Luffman, Nora Betts, Ron Phipps and ‘Albert’ who took to the winner’s podium. Nine points behind them were John & Ellen Drakesmith, Mike Mahony and Joyce McClusky. Our first ‘Major’ of the year, the Caja Murcia Trophy, was competed for on Wednesday. This magnificent trophy was donated to us by the bank of that name twenty years ago. Benedicte Kruse took the accolades with a tremendous score of 41 points. Hot on her heels, with 40 points, it was Pat Cassidy followed by John Drakesmith with 37. Having achieved 18 points on the first seven holes I felt I could have been in contention. However, the wheels came off in a dramatic fashion and I

finished last with a total of just 25 points! Three ‘2’s today going to Mike Chapman, Paul Brown and Pat Cassidy. It was down to the final wire for Friday’s best 2 from 4 and all to count on the par 5’s. With two teams coming in with 95 points it was Ron Phipps, Olga Douglas, Dave Pulling and Reg Akehurst who, after countback, took first place. Just missing out were Andy Martin, Benedicte Kruse, John Dobson and Mike Chapman. Por ultimo, Mike Mahony says to his caddy, ‘What do you think of my game?’ to which caddy replies ‘it’s very good but personally I prefer golf’. Pues hasta la semana que viene

of their semi-final will surely go on to lift the FA Cup this season. Given how pathetic Newcastle were in their 3-0 battering by Brighton, you’d suspect Fulham will regret not beating Leeds on Friday night. Potter’s clash with Bruce was far from the turgid, nervous, quality-free relegation battle you’d expect. Brighton were as glorious to watch as always and even put the icing on the cake by scoring actual goals. Newcastle, well their punishment is that Mike Ashley is refusing to sack Steve Bruce as he feels sympathy for him. Patrick Bamford reminded Gareth Southgate that he’s probably not called up the right strikers by scoring at Craven Cottage and you had to feel for Leeds’ skipper Luke Ayling who, thinking he’d scored his first-ever Premier League goal, let his hair down in a true air guitar celebration only for VAR to intervene. Who is this Jesse Lingard fella that is playing at West Ham? Lingard was on fire against Arsenal, even taking the game to the point where it was plainly obvious there are not enough clever quick free-kicks in the world. Paul Merson called him the ‘midfield Emile Heskey’ and if you know whether that was a compliment or not, let us know. The Hammers were probably still applauding it when Lacazette headed in at the far post to level the game at 33, having been three down. Is it unfair to point out that West Ham were winning before they brought on Mark Noble? As mentioned before, Jose has to qualify for Europe somehow to keep his job heading into next season with Daniel Levy getting closer and closer to admitting he made a big, big booboo by appointing him in the first place. However, a 2-0 win away at Aston Villa helps - especially when both Carlos Vinicius and Harry Kane started and scored. Yes, that’s the Vinicius that Spurs won’t be paying £36m for at the end of the season, apparently. They need that money to make the Bale deal permanent.

Torrevieja swimmer ranked in World Masters Top Ten The achievements of 77 year old Beryl Altabas are being celebrated this week. Beryl has been named in the top ten rankings in the FINA World Masters Top Ten short course rankings in 2020 in the female age category 75 – 79 years. She has been competing in both open water and pool competitions for many years in this region and even though this year has only allowed three pool competitions and very sporadic and limited training, this has not deterred Beryl from some great achievements. When the pools closed, training continued in the sea, alone or when allowed, with other teammates. This last year has been very difficult due to the pandemic but in the three competitions Beryl participated in, she managed to achieve world rankings in each of her races (see below for details of her achievements) FINA World Masters Ranking Top 10
