Britons fear deportation from this week British expats living in Spain are facing fears of deportation for failing to successfully register for residencia under new post-Brexit rules. Spanish immigration officials are expecting to deport around 500 Britons over the

coming weeks and according to reports in the UK press over the weekend, authorities already have some people earmarked to be sent back for not having the correct paperwork to remain here. Up until now, authorities have usually

turned a blind-eye to Britons living, but not legally registered, here. However, under new rules, those in an irregular situation with no residency paperwork have to be out of the country by March 31st when they will be deemed as illegal immigrants because their 90 day legal stay comes to an end. Already people locally on the Costa Blanca are reporting a small scale exodus of people being forced to return to the UK as applications for residencia are being rejected. Those who do not wish to apply for residencia must return home to Britain, as EU freedom of movement laws no longer apply. If a British citizen does not want to apply for legal residency, or if their application is rejected, they must leave Spain by 31st March or they will be deemed an illegal immigrant, with the

potential risk of deportation. According to a report in Monday’s Independent, “Spanish police reportedly expect to begin deportation action for up to 500 British citizens within the first week.” Many Britons living on the Costa Blanca were able to regularise their residencia situation before now but in many cases, the systems in place are struggling to keep up with demand – with additional pressure due to the Covid-19 pandemic – and in many cases, regional bodies cannot keep up with demand and are struggling to confirm if long term British residents in Spain are allowed to remain here or not with many applications underway but not yet complete. In most EU countries, Britons can now only stay without a permit for 90 days out of every 180 days.

Torrevieja beaches to be safest in Spain

Torrevieja beaches will be one of the safest in Spain, claims the Town Hall, with the launching of a new information and control service which will create 194 jobs. 40 of the new positions will form a new coastal patrol which will control the seaside walkway between Paseo Vista Alegre and Punta Margalla. Torrevieja’s Councillor for Beaches Antonio Vidal presented the plans this week which deal with the contracting of the service for managing and controlling Torrevieja’s beaches – a much more complicated than usual process due to the health

measures in place during the pandemic. This management and control service, which was launched last summer following safety regulations outlined by the Government of Spain, was one of the most successful and comprehensive on the entire Mediterranean coast, as it oversaw not just capacity control, but also the cleaning and disinfection service for public toilets and footbaths. As a new feature for this coming summer, the contract will include an information and control service on the activity and

use of the promenade areas, offering an even greater level of safety and security on the coastal transit routes. This service will have a schedule adapted to the various boardwalk and promenade spaces, covering the hours with the highest number of visitors. The value of the contract amounts to € 1,671,987.45 (VAT included), with a total of 194 jobs, 40 of which will cover the new boardwalk control service. The service, which is scheduled to start in the second half of June, will run until the first half of September.

Police continue to search for suspected rapist in Orihuela The National Police are investigating the serious sexual assault of a 57-year-old woman that occurred at around 9am on Sunday 21st March. The incident took place at the popular recreational area Soto de los Pinos where the victim had gone for a walk along the Segura river. Officers are looking for a man of North African origin, aged between 35

and 40 years old, as the perpetrator of the alleged rape. Sources say the woman was walking along the river at around 9am on Sunday when she was accosted and dragged into the nearby field where she is believed to have been raped. The man then fled on foot along the riverside.

Shortly afterwards, the victim was found lying on the ground by a passing couple who helped her and raised the alarm. The Soto de los Pinos is a popular recreational area, especially at weekends, used by families and athletes. It is just two kilometres from the Murcian town of Beniel.

Four boats arrive Hit and run driver on Alicante coast arrested in one day Four boats in just one day have landed along the Alicante coastline, bringing at least 50 people into Spain, including a pregnant woman. The latest boat to arrive made landfall at Tabarca Island, off the coast of Santa Pola. As well as Tabarca, the boats landed in Alicante and on two beaches in Torrevieja. In addition to these four boats, there were already six other ‘pateras’ (small motor boats) landed along the Alicante coastline so far this week, three of them in Cabo de las Huertas. All of those on board are believed to be of Algerian nationality. The first of these most recent boats arrived at Cabo de las Huertas at around five this morning with six people on board, five men and a pregnant woman. The woman, in line with protocol, was transferred to the General Hospital of Alicante for a more indepth examination, although the Red Cross indicated that she is in good health. The second boat reached the coast of Torrevieja shortly after five in the morning, with another 16 people on board. Specifically, to the town beach of

Los Locos. There, instead of running away to try to hide, the people on board waited for the arrival of the local police who monitored the group until the Guardia Civil arrived to take over. Two of the group claimed to be minors. Shortly after, another motor boat, with 12 immigrants on board, arrived at Cala Ferris, also in Torrevieja. Two people driving the boat let the men disembark on the beach before returning to sea at full speed. On this boat, there were also two minors. All of the passengers have been transferred to the marquee facility in the Port of Alicante so that the Red Cross can submit them to a medical examination to determine their state of health and where they will also undergo a PCR test. The, fourth boat of the day was intercepted in the vicinity of Tabarca with fifteen other people on board, where the vessel appeared to be stranded. The boat was assisted by Maritime Rescue and was towed to port. According to the Red Cross, all of those on board were in good health.

Torrevieja Local Police arrested a driver who fled the scene on Thursday after hitting a cyclist on the roundabout next to the hospital before fleeing the scene. After what police described as an “exhaustive investigation”, officers located the driver on Friday morning. The Department of Emergencies of the Torrevieja City Council extended its thanks to all the citizens who offered their collaboration with the search. The cyclist was seriously injured after the hit and run which took place at around 8.45am at the access to Torrevieja hospital on the CV-95. After running over the cyclist, the driver fled the scene at full speed along the CV-95 towards San Miguel de Salinas and Orihuela. The wounded man lay on the road bleeding profusely. Police officers, first to the scene, covered the wounded man

with a blanket until the arrival of the ambulance. The paramedics treated him at the side of the road due to the severity of his injuries and he was later transferred to Quirón Hospital with a broken hip. Several units of the Torrevieja Local Police and the Guardia Civil were dispatched to the scene of the incident and were able to verify, through eyewitnesses, that the car involved in the impact fled the scene at speed. The driver was located and arrested on Friday morning.

Guardamar robber caught in the act A Guardamar Local Police patrol has detained a Lithuanian national as the alleged perpetrator of a crime of "robbery with force". The detainee was caught redhanded when he was found inside a home whilst

committing the robbery. Numerous tools commonly used for this type of activity were seized, including door bowlers that can also be used for the encroachment or occupation of homes. In turn, the chilling amount of 17,000

euros in banknotes was also found. Local police and Civil Guard continue investigations regarding the event and other previous crimes and are searching for other possible accomplices.

Rojales to get three new facilities The municipality of Rojales is to have a elderly person home and two centres for people with serious mental disorders. The Generalitat Valenciana is making an investment of 10 million euros and the tender process for the award of the projects will begin this year. The Director of Social Services Infrastructures, Enric Juan, stressed that the viability of this project has been "thanks to the collaboration and joint work" of the Rojales City Council, which has donated the land for its construction, the Alicante Provincial Council and the Generalitat. The home for the elderly will provide full time residence for the elderly who are in a situation of dependency, the others will be a centre for people with chronic

Land all ready go

mental illnesses (CEEM) and a rehabilitation and social integration centre (CRIS). These works are part of the Social Infrastructure Plan promoted by the Department to promote the network of social services "in those regions with the greatest need for resources." In addition, Enric Juan himself has indicated Vega Baja as a

priority department to increase the quality and access to social services, due to its low coverage of social resources that it has. The construction of the three centres, the residence for the elderly and the CEEM and CRIS will be located on a land with an area of 16,000 square meters surrounded by a residential area with services.

Easter interregional travel This Easter weekend will be another where the usual holiday traffic jams on motorways are very unlikely, since all regions in Spain – except the Canary Islands – have shut their borders to prevent mass movement across the country. But there will be exceptions allowing people to travel beyond their home regions, and different criteria for proving these. Anyone who does need to leave their region over the coming fortnight is advised to take any proof they may be able to find with them, just in case. Those most likely to be affected will be residents close to regional borders – such as where their nearest district hospital or place of work is in a neighbouring region. Anything relating to healthcare, such as attending GP appointments, clinics, hospitals or other medical and social care-related facilities, is permitted, as is going to work or to anywhere connected to one's job, like seeing clients, or making deliveries for those whose job involves long-distance driving. Going to school, college, university, nursery or infant school and dropping off children there or picking them up is permitted – some universities and colleges are still providing their tuition online, but schools are largely open, although primary and secondary schools at least will be shut for normal classes over Easter. Care and assistance for the elderly,

minors, the disabled, persons considered 'especially vulnerable', and dependants in general is allowed. Drivers who need to go to petrol stations just over their regional border, where this is the nearest, can do so, as can anyone whose bank, insurance company or other financial entity is in another region and they are required to travel there over Easter. The same applies with any legal and administrative appointments – court cases, renewing passports or ID cards or driving licences, or anything else that falls within the description of 'legal' or 'officialdom' and which cannot be postponed until later in April. Exams and tests, where these cannot be postponed, can be carried out in another region if there is no way of doing so in one's own. Emergencies of any type, or situations of 'extreme necessity', force majeur, natural disaster, or pressing issues or engagements which cannot be put off allow for travel outside one's home region, although if stopped by the police blockades expected to be set up at all borders, it is likely such cases will be open to interpretation, so all care should be taken to provide as much evidence of their urgent nature as possible – unless this is obvious, such as a fire or flood which involves immediate mass evacuation. Returning to one's main residence, or family home if this is not the same place – such as students, or people

who live alone and decide to spend Easter with their parents or other close relatives – is permitted. The Valencian region requires paperwork to prove the need, which could be a letter of confirmation of a doctor's or hospital appointment, a job contract, or similar. Most regions in Spain are expecting to review their situations from 12th April onwards – cases of contagion have fallen considerably since the beginning of the year, but are starting to rise again in some parts, particularly the north, and authorities are concerned Easter may bring a fresh

spike in numbers. Travel to holiday homes outside one's region of residence is not permitted, and a woman from Madrid who recently moved into her summer house in Alicante has been fined. These rules are expected to relax as the spring progresses, especially as the vaccine roll-out continues – so far, around 2.5 million people in Spain have had both doses of the Covid vaccine, meaning that even though they can still catch the virus and may be able to pass it onto others, the inoculation should prevent their suffering the effects of it.

Orihuela gets new rubbish collection lorry

The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, and the councillor for Road Cleaning, Dámaso Aparicio, have taken delivery of a new side-loading rubbish truck. It is a state-of-the-art vehicle that, added to the four previous ones acquired two years ago, will mean an improvement in service and the renewal of a third of the existing fleet. With the new vehicle, the Department also benefit from significant savings in repairs and in the leasing of vehicles in the summer season. This fifth truck was a commitment of the previous government team in which €900,000 was allocated to tender four trucks, with a saving of €147,000. The vehicles that we purchased last year ‘already have more than 40,000 km because they have to go every day to the Jijona or Alicante plant’, the Councillor explained. These five trucks, alongside 1,000 new containers, 189 litter bins, a pressure washer, an octopus truck represent an investment of €1,200,000 in recent years.

3 kilometre caravan of cars protest the ‘Valencian’ decree The platform for "For Linguistic Freedom", made up of families from Pilar de la Horadada, along with other associations such as AMPAS Vega Baja and the Platform of Teachers for Linguistic Freedom, among others, gathered on Sunday morning in a 3 kilometre caravan of vehicles to demand that the Plurilingualism Law 4/2018 be repealed. The law sees the imposition of Valencian in schools across the region with less Spanish and English taught as a result. Students will be taught core subjects through Valencian instead of Spanish, which in areas such as the Vega Baja where Valencian is not widely spoken as a first language, is feared to jeopardize the education of tens of thousands of children. Cars, vans and trucks gathered at the local sports centre before driving the protest circuit with huge participation from local groups and families, as well as representatives from other parts of the Valencian Community. A spokesperson for the Platform for Linguistic Freedom explained that the new law flagrantly violates the constitution, which recognizes the right to an exemption from the Valencian language for citizens based in areas known to be mainly Spanish speaking. The call to protest was issued by

a variety of parents’ groups across the region as well as national action groups ‘Hablamos Español’ and the Platform of Teachers for Language Freedom. Other organizations from the Vega Baja also joined the protest, such as farmers, businesspeople and citizens who, despite not having a direct link with the educational world, turned out to support the protest. Organisers said they were satisfied with the huge turnout for the protest, which caused local police in Pilar some headaches – the planned route had to be

changed in order to sufficiently accommodate all the participating vehicles. Organisers said, “Citizens of all regions and of all political colors have come together, putting aside everything that separates us to prioritize what unites us, the common concern for the rights of our children and their vital future, although it is surprising that, already well entering the 21st century, it is necessary to take to the streets to defend internationally recognized values such as the right to education in the mother tongue.”

First Spanish Royal visit to Andorra in 602 years King Felipe VI and his wife Queen Letizia have arrived in Andorra for an official visit – which might not seem very newsworthy were it not for the fact they are the first Spanish monarchs to do so in 602 years. And this makes them the first Spanish monarchs ever to do so, since Andorra's Parliament has only been in existence for six centuries. Nestled into the Pyrénées and popular for skiing and hillwalking breaks, and for its duty-free shops, Andorra is also the only country on earth whose sole official language is catalán, the regional tongue of Spain's north-eastern region of Catalunya. In fact, the nearest heliport, and where HRHs Felipe VI and Letizia were 'dropped off', is in La Seu d'Urgell in the Catalunya province of Lleida. It would never have occurred to the Spanish public that their Royal leaders had never made an official visit to Andorra, given the fact that it shares a land border with Spain and that anyone who heads north of the Pyrénées via any mode of transport more or less passes it en route – but perhaps this geographical proximity is the reason. Indeed, few Spanish residents could even name the president of Andorra – but, currently, he is Xavier Espot, and his deputy is Roser Suñé. Five parties have seats in Andorra's Parliament, which comprises a total of 28 MPs. Although a sovereign, independent nation, the Principality of Andorra's official heads of State are not resident there, and it is one of the few countries

on earth that has two – in a similar way to HRH Elizabeth II's being head of State of the Commonwealth, Andorra's are King Felipe VI of Spain and French president Emmanuel Macron. This makes it one of the only known countries where the head of State rôle is shared between a republic and a monarchy. The highest authority figure to have visited Andorra so far has been former Spanish president Mariano Rajoy, in 2015, exactly four years after Spain ceased to formally consider Andorra a 'tax haven'. King Felipe and Queen Letizia's visit has started off with a tour of the city hall in Andorra la Vella, or the Comú, and HRH Letizia had planned a meeting with Andorra's education minister Ester Villarubla to find out more about the nation's system for including disabled pupils in mainstream schooling. Now the Spanish Royals have finally

King Felipe VI and his wife Queen Letizia

set foot in the country in an official capacity for the first time in 602 years, it seems unlikely they will leave it so long before doing so again. In fact, King Felipe will be back there on duty on 21st April, since it is Andorra's turn to host the latest edition of the Ibero-American Summit. He will be joined by Spanish president Pedro Sánchez. King Felipe and Queen Letizia have not gone abroad on a State visit since November 2019, when a Royal engagement took them to Cuba; they were due to make a similar appearance in the USA in April last year, but the outbreak of Covid-19 worldwide led to its being called off. Non-State but 'duty' visits abroad have also been off the agenda for over a year – the last of these they made was in early March 2020, to Paris, just before lockdown.

Vaccinations in Orihuela for key workers

The City Council has everything ready for the vaccination of about 6,000 teachers and education centre staff. The programme began on Friday in the Bernardo Ruiz de Orihuela Pavilion. The location became a COVID-19 vaccination point for about 6,000 people, including teachers, staff of public educational centres including cleaners, monitors, administration. Also receiving their first jabs were pharmacy staff and other health personnel who have not been vaccinated before, all belonging to the Orihuela Health Department. During the last weeks, municipal workers have been adapting the pavilion to facilitate the immunisation campaign, in addition to guaranteeing all sanitary measures are in place. The vaccination of these groups began Friday afternoon and continued throughout the day on Saturday. They will also be vaccinating on Wednesday 31st March and Thursday 1st April in the morning. The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, accompanied by the councillors of the government team, Rafael Almagro, Dámaso Aparicio and Víctor Valverde

who have supervised the preparing of the facility. The Mayor said: “Last January, we offered this facility to the Ministry of Health, as we did with the medical offices and other municipal facilities. We have allocated all the human and material resources available at the municipal level in order to speed up and facilitate the vaccination process against COVID-19.” Teachers and other personnel from the 18 municipalities that make up the Orihuela Health Department will travel to the Bernardo Ruiz Pavilion. These include: Albatera, Algorfa, Almoradí, Benejúzar, Benferri, Bigastro, Callosa de Segura, Catral, Cox, Daya Nueva, Daya Vieja, Dolores, Granja de Rocamora, Jacarilla, Rafal, Redován, San Isidro, Orihuela and its districts La Aparecida, Rincón de Bonanza, Desamparados, Arneva, Hurchillo, La Murada, La Matanza, La Campaneta, San Bartolomé, Virgen del Camino , Molins, Correntias, El Escorratel. Orihuela Costa and Torremendo areas are not included as these belong to the Torrevieja Health Department.

The sad truth about a pandemic means it is inevitable some of you will inherit a property in Spain. But what are you supposed to do with it? Move in? Sell it? The inheritance process in Spain is relatively simple. Providing your loved one left a Will, everything should be straightforward. If you’ve inherited a property here in Spain the first thing to do is, speak to a local Spanish Lawyer. They will be able to give you a timeframe on winding up the Estate. This means having the property registered in your name. You may not have to pay anything up front, as if you’re intending on selling the house you’ve just inherited, your Lawyermay let you pay their fees and associated taxes upon the completion of the house sale*. Allow approximately 3 months, once your Lawyer has received all relevant paperwork, for everything to be registered in your name. Did you know that, whilst your Lawyer is winding

up the Estate, you can still start the process of selling the property you just inherited? You can! Providing you let your Real Estate Agent know the circumstances, they will be able to find you a buyer in the meantime, then complete the sale once the inheritance is finalized. As long as your Real Estate Agent is aware of your reasons for selling, they can help guide you through this difficult time. So take one step at a time and don’t be afraid to ask for advice. Most importantly, don’t be afraid to ask the Lawyer if they are prepared to wait for their payment until the completion of the home sale. You’d be surprised at how accommodating they can be! *Every Lawyer has different policies, therefore you must check with your own Lawyer and ask whether you can pay their fees and taxes on the completion of the house sale.

CaixaBank's Bankia buyout gets green light The proposed takeover bid by CaixaBank for State-run entity Bankia has been approved by the National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC), subject to certain clauses about charges for accounts and cashpoint use, and ensuring banking services continue in rural communities. The future megabank will be a high-street leader, but Spanish and European laws would not allow the acquisition to proceed if there was any chance of its holding a nearmonopoly. Also, the merger – in practice, a buy-out by CaixaBank – will affect credit and debit card companies, card payment machines, cashpoints, and sales and administration of insurance and pension plans. The CNMC concludes that the CaixaBank-Bankia operation will 'not prove a threat to competition principles' as either its market share 'would not be large enough to cause concern' or because 'there would be sufficient competition' to prevent a monopoly. But this would, in fact, be the case in individual areas of operation, even if not with the takeover as a whole, meaning certain legally-binding

News

CostaBlancaPeople 30th March - 5th April 2021

guarantees will have to be made by the future holding company. The CNMC has identified 21 postcodes in Spain – postcodes being the same for entire towns or, in large metropolitan areas, districts or suburbs, rather than changing by street as in some countries – where the new company would be the only bank on the high street. It has flagged up another 65 postcodes where the resulting

firm would only have one other bank as its competition. In both cases, this means at least a very limited, or even no 'market pressure' in these areas, which would provide the CaixaBank-Bankia fusion with 'a high level of market power that could influence its behaviour'. For example, if CaixaBank decided to close down some of its branches, where these affected the 21 postcodes in which it is the only entity, it could create a 'situation of financial exclusion' by

leaving an entire village with no bank at all. Additionally, it could be tempting for the firm to charge more in commissions and admin fees and provide poorer-quality customer service, safe in the knowledge that its captive audience did not have the choice of 'shopping' elsewhere. This could particularly be the case with Bankia customers, given that it is their entity which will, effectively, disappear after being absorbed by CaixaBank. Customers with ING, Banco Sabadell, or banks that form part of the Euro 6000 network, such as Kutxabank, all of which have agreements with Bankia allowing them to use its cashpoints without charge, could find they are hit with commission every time they make a withdrawal if their only available ATM is run by CaixaBank instead. This would be 'especially noticeable' in areas where Bankia has a high number of cashpoints, says the CNMC. CaixaBank is aware that if it wants to go ahead with the Bankia buyout, it has no choice but to find solutions to this issues first, and ensure those solutions stay in place once the deal is done, to avoid massive fines under anticompetition legislation.

Community call to support Jodie Quesada resident Jade Danielle Carter is kickstarting a community fundraiser for Jodie Lee Baxter. Jade told the Costa Blanca People, “I decided to raise money for Jodie as she is urgently in need of a lift to assist with her mobility. She is confined to the basement/garage of her house because she can’t manage the stairs with her wheelchair, and I think if we as a community could help her install a lift, she would be able to spend time with her family, and enjoy the simple things like putting her children to bed – it would be wonderful.” Jodie is 33 years old and a mother of three wonderful children. A talented photographer, Jodie has suffered with debilitating fits since childhood. For

many years, medical staff told Jodie she was having panic attacks and didn’t recognise her condition as epilepsy. Jade told us, “After numerous times of this happening I remember getting a call from her husband in 2018 on a Sunday saying that Jodie had been taken into hospital and they had put her into an induced coma because they realized they were seizures and were getting worse.” At this stage, even though Jodie was in a coma her brain was still active, and thus she continued having seizures. This went on and on until eventually she was transferred by helicopter to Valencia hospital. Jade continued, “Can you imagine how hard this was for her husband and kids? Well, in between hospitals and the amount

of time she was in an induced coma she now has reduced mobility from the waist down. As you can imagine, this has caused lots of sadness for Jodie as she used to love doing stuff, helping people and finds it very hard to deal with life in a wheelchair.” Jodie lives in an apartment which is only accessible by stairs. She can’t leave the house without her husband lifting her down the stairs. Her husband leaves for work at 6 in the morning and does not return until 10 at night, sometimes later, so Jodie often finds herself locked in all day. Jade explained, “She has tried getting a loan but has been denied because they have classed her as permanently disabled. She really needs a lift to be able to deal with her family again, get the kids ready and take them to school and not have to depend so much on everybody else.” “I know Jodie well,” said Jade, “And she doesn´t like asking for help but I am asking for help on her behalf. It would be great if people who know her, and even those who don’t know her, could donate as much as possible so we can get her back to some semblance of normality.” After three years, and several more fits, comas and visits to hospital, Jodie has been told she won’t walk again. Her husband has partially adapted the apartment’s basement garage so that Jodie can live downstairs after two years of not being able to go out due to not being able to manage the stairs.

The compromise here is that she is separated from family life. If the children are home from school, Jodie can’t be downstairs in the garage and leave them by themselves. If she wants to be able to go out, she has to stay in the basement away from her family. Those who already know Jodie know that she is a great help to the community. She is often found translating for people (and often, without charging anything), offering help and advice and has raised lots of money for local charities. Jade said, “This girl is amazing and has helped so many people through the pandemic and through the floods we had in 2019 and has never asked for anything, she

has even set up a food bank to help people in the village who are without work through no fault of their own. She also set up a Facebook page called: Vega Baja Community Support to help people understand all the new restrictions and the new measures in place during the pandemic.” The goal is to raise enough money to have a lift installed so that Jodie can live a normal family life. To donate, simply go to the fundraising website: https://gofund.me/5fa5e330 or call Jade on 621273832 Equally, if you are a bar, restaurant, club or group and you would like to fundraise for the campaign please get in touch with Jade.

Winter Beach on the Costa The City Council of Orihuela has launched the fifth edition of its popular ‘Winter Beach’ programme of activities, which will take place every Sunday on the Beaches of Orihuela The programme began on Saturday – 27th March – and was launched at two different locations: Cala Cerrada and in La Caleta in Cabo Roig. The Beaches of Orihuela are a unique environment and perfect for carrying out the 33 water and sports activities that the Beaches and Youth departments have scheduled for the spring-summer season. Luisa Boné, Councillor for Beaches, said “we return again this spring with 'The Winter Beach' taking advantage of the magnificent climate of our area, to be able to continue enjoying activities in the best framework we have, which are our beaches. The aim is to de-seasonalise the beaches so people use them all year round and not just during the summer. We also aim to introduce people to the many different

types of activities, rather than just swimming and sunbathing and create family-friendly days out.”

As a new offering in this fifth edition, on Saturdays from 3rd April to 29th May, from 9am, visitors can practice surfing at Cala Cerrada. This activity is aimed at beginner and intermediate levels from 6 years old upwards. Those taking part only need to bring a wetsuit, all other equipment will be supplied. On Saturdays and Sundays,

from 27th March to 13th June at La Caleta, visitors can practice Paddel Surfing and Canoeing from 11am. The water activities are aimed at users over 8 years old and a neoprene suit is necessary to participate. “The activities are free and information will be provided every week through the Facebook pages of the Beaches and Youth Councils of the calendar of activities. ‘The activities promote outdoor sports, which are so necessary for physical and mental at this time, and on weekends when the majority of people can enjoy them,’ explained Mar Ezcurra, councillor for Youth. The Yoga and Pilates activities scheduled on Saturdays and Sundays in La Caleta are postponed until a later date due to Covid restrictions.

Investment Jitters? Investors could be forgiven for being a little on edge. Financial markets have been on a rollercoaster ride for the past year.

As banks are offering all time low returns, where else can you put your money to get a decent return?

The value of the UK's biggest 100 companies has plunged by a fifth – with sectors such as leisure, tourism and some retail businesses on their knees.

Part of the stress of investing can be watching financial markets swinging this way and that – and trying to work out how to react.

There are likely to be more stomach-lurching moments ahead as the Europe-wide lockdowns take their toll along with the fall-out from the No Deal Brexit.

There are thousands of products on the market that can take advantage of the stock market whilst balancing returns against risk. The best way forward is to make sure you don’t put all your eggs in one basket.

There are a number of financial advisers on the Costa Blanca so the question is “why choose Seagate?” I believe that we offer a unique service to our clients. We have a fully staffed local office in Benijofar with a back-up admin team, a Client Account Manager and a Relationship Manager. This means that we have a team that will support you with six monthly reviews of your investment or pension and we provide full administration for withdrawals, encashments and tax guidance. Do not delay making a decision, call us today.

But for investors who can live with market volatility, the next few months could present some good opportunities.

If you are looking for help, then the team at Seagate Wealth are on hand to advise you every step of the way.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP It was the first anniversary of Britain’s initial Covid lockdown, and despite the pandemics impact on economies worldwide, sterling has fared okay during lockdowns, with an average gain of 2.6%. This week the pound faced a poor start and a strong finish, leaving it an average of 0.1% firmer against the major currencies; in other words just about unchanged. Overall though, the UK economic data was a mixed blessing for the pound. Investors' were not enthused by the UK inflation numbers, most of which were lower than forecast. Factory gate prices were 0.9% higher on the year while consumer prices rose just 0.4%. Although the retail price index was up by 1.4%, the measure does not figure in the rate-setting decision process. UK employment figures showed small increases in the number of employees, although, since February 2020 their number has fallen by 693k. The rate of unemployment fell to 5%. Wage growth remained strong at 4.8%, mainly because of the loss of more lowly-paid jobs and the payment of deferred bonuses. What has been interesting is watching sterling’s performance over the past month, as the US dollar had added an average of 3% against other majors. In the short term sterling has underperformed against the euro despite the UK’s fast pace at vaccinating the population. Perhaps investors are concerned about the threat of an EU-UK vaccine war, or maybe they simply have one eye on how the economy will perform post-Brexit. Only time will tell.

EURO By and large, the US economic data has been at least as good as the numbers from Europe, but not in every case, which brings up the question of why the euro has struggled. Provisional purchasing managers’ indices from the manufacturing sector in Germany and the Eurozone came in at 66.6 and 62.4, with the equivalent US reading at 59. It is hard to avoid the suspicion that investors are keeping the euro at arm’s length because they fear the EU will be left behind economically as a result of vaccine disarray. Speaking of vaccine disarray, it was another week of political wrangling on vaccine production and trade dominating the euro’s narrative once more. The euro did well to hold steady against the pound, given the underlying concern that vaccine inefficiency could delay Europe’s economic recovery. There was no help from the Eurozone economic data, not because they were ugly but as a result of investors’ preoccupation with vaccines and lockdowns. Consumer confidence in Germany and the Eurozone both showed improvement, helped by the lifting of lockdowns. The provisional purchasing managers’ indices, early indicators of economic activity in the private sector, all came in better than expected. The consolidated euro area measure put manufacturing at a record high of 62.4 while the composite was back in its comfort zone at 52.5, an eight-month high.

UK variant is now dominant strain in Spain The new, more contagious strain of the coronavirus that was first detected in the United Kingdom now accounts for half of all new coronavirus cases in Spain. Given that the strain – known as B.1.1.7 – is more contagious, it has been able to spread across the country and is now the dominant variant in Spain, said Spanish Health Minister Carolina Darias. Speaking after a meeting of the Inter-Territorial Council of the National Health System, which brings together health officials from the central and regional governments, Darias warned that Spain is facing a “possible change in trend” as the incidence rate continues to rise. The news comes after the central government announced that it is lifting a ban on air and sea arrivals from the UK that had been in place since December in a bid to contain the B.1.1.7 variant.

After two months of a downward trend, as the third wave of the pandemic subsided, this data point has been steadily rising since last Wednesday. On 27th January, the 14-day cumulative number of coronavirus cases per 100,000 inhabitants peaked at 900. “We are at a decisive moment,” said Darias. “We must strengthen all control measures and reverse this trend.” Although the InterTerritorial Council of the National Health System did not reach an agreement on whether the restrictions planned for Easter week should be tightened, it did indicate that the regions – which are in charge of handling the response to the pandemic in their territories – may choose to strengthen the measures if considered necessary. Eleven of Spain’s 17 regions, as well as the North African exclave cities of Ceuta and Melilla,

reported a rise in the incidence rate from last week. Melilla continues to have the highest 14-day cumulative number of cases (511), followed by Ceuta (253), Madrid (228) and the Basque Country (199). On the other end of the spectrum are the Balearic Islands, Valencia region, Extremadura, Galicia, Murcia and La Rioja, where the data point is below 100. Darias warned that hospitals continue to be under pressure in many regions of Spain. While Covid-19 patients occupy 18.6 percent of all intensive care unit (ICU) beds in the country, this figure is more than 30 percent in Catalonia, Madrid and La Rioja. This percentage refers to total ICU capacity, including spaces in operating theatres. If only designated ICU beds are counted, the occupancy rate is closer to 100 percent in some regions.

Support in Spain extended to Costa Blanca Valuable information website for older and vulnerable British people living in Spain expands into the Costa Blanca and Murcia

“It is always useful to plan ahead for the future. Many of us see our or our friends’ personal circumstances change and this website is a really good way to check up on the help that's available.”

The Support in Spain website (www.supportinspain.info), run in collaboration with the British Embassy, aims to help with the welfare challenges of the foreign-resident population and is being launched over the next two weeks at a series of virtual events for voluntary groups and social workers in and around the Costa Blanca and Murcia.

Neil Hesketh said: “The site is in Spanish, as well as English, so that social workers, medical staff and Spanish-speaking friends can, for the first time, access information on English-speaking support available.”

The site contains useful information on how to get extra support and help on a wide range of topics, such as healthcare, disability services and benefits, as well as providing a directory of local support organisations. The service was designed in collaboration with the University of Birmingham and the British Embassy Madrid, and has had over 90,000 visitors since it first launched. British Consul Sarah-Jane Morris said: “There is some incredible work carried out by so many volunteers across the Costa Blanca and Murcia to support foreign residents who are in need. This website will be a valuable tool to support voluntary groups in their work and for residents as well.

Website address: www.supportinspain.info More information: info@supportinspain.info Support in Spain project The Support in Spain website is the result of a close cooperation between the British Embassy and the School of Social Policy at the University of Birmingham. The original project set out to research the issues older and vulnerable British people face while living in Spain and to suggest possible solutions to help prevent them becoming socially isolated in the future. One of the conclusions of the study was the need to develop a website that included all the contact information of the different voluntary groups and Spanish statutory authorities available locally, as well as

helpful advice on common questions, such as how to secure extra social care, help for a disability or assistance with paperwork in Spanish. The project was funded by the UK’s

Economic and Social Research Council and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office. The content of the website currently covers the Costa del Sol, Almeria, the

Canaries, the Balearics, coastal towns and cities in Catalonia, and now the Costa Blanca and Murcia. It is published in Spanish as well as English and has had over 90,000 visitors since it was launched.

Spring The sun peeps through a golden hue to bathe the morning air. The Blackbird sings and spreads his wings to tell us spring is here. The buds awake and gently shake the dewdrops from their eyes. The breezes dance on hyacinths and winter slowly dies. Now as the stream awakes from dream and softly trickles by. His icy coat is free to float beneath the morning sky. So be aware of what we share with every living thing. Wish not to change or rearrange The wondrous gift of Spring. Jean Roy, Monte Azul

THE BLIND CUPID SHAKESPEARE COMPANY AND QUARANTINE KIDS STORYTIME PARTNER IN PRODUCING A SERIES OF SHAKESPEARE INSPIRED AUDIO DRAMAS

gratefully received. The funds will go directly to the companies and the actors, all of whom have been struck by the effects of the pandemic and theatres shutdown.

The Blind Cupid Shakespeare Company, as featured in the Costa Blanca People earlier this year, has announced a new partnership with Quarantine Kids Storytime to produce short form audio dramas of Shakespeare's plays. The collaboration aims to deliver classical content made accessible to young audiences and those new to the Bard. Each play will be performed by a talented array of international actors.

In a moment of solitude and isolation, the project aims to enable the listeners to travel beyond borders with the help of their imaginations through the words of the most famous of storytellers. The poster emulates the idea of a subway station: each train stop corresponds to a play based in a different country, for the Blind Cupid Team believe, “If we can’t travel physically, then art will have to carry us.”

The stories presented are adaptations by Charles and Mary Lamb, as Quarantine Kids founder Sascha Cooper revealed: “This is the perfect opportunity to showcase how Charles and Mary Lamb not only made these plays accessible, but also strip down the most complicated plots to make them easier to follow and understand.”

The Blind Cupid Shakespeare Company is a multinational and neurodiverse group of creative artists who aim to bring fresh, inclusive, collaborative, empowering classical theatre to international communities to encourage continued relationships across borders and backgrounds, reaffirming that theatre connects people from all walks of life, and belongs to everyone. The company aims to bring its first full scale production to the Costa Blanca of Spain, which due to the pandemic has been delayed, but watch this space as they are working hard and fast to make things possible. In the meantime, they launched with their first production in February, the ‘Alls Well As it Ends Well’ Valentines Showcase’, which is now available to watch on YouTube. For more information visit www.blincupidshakespearecompany.co m

Beginning April 10th, two plays will be released each weekend, on Saturdays and Sundays at 2pm GMT respectively, running for 10 weeks until June 13th. The audio dramas will be available to stream via Quarantine Kids Storytime’s YouTube Channel. In the hope of reaching as many audiences as possible, and making Shakespeare’s work accessible, the content will be available to listeners for free. For those who can afford to, an eventbrite will be available where donations will be encouraged and

Quarantine Kids Storytime was set up in 2020 as an online community project by Alice J Crouch and Sascha Cooper (Crimson Horse Theatre) in order to entertain children, families and those young at heart through these uncertain times, with the power of reading books. Based in Brighton, they slowly built a reading team, consisting of professional actors, teachers and mental health specialists who give their time to the cause. “This project is a way of saying thank you to our wonderful team for giving the time they have, so please donate to help us develop further projects and support our actors.” says

Cooper. Guardia Civil officer arrested for bribery and revealing of secrets A Guardia Civil officer stationed in Santa Pola has been arrested, suspected of bribery and revealing secrets. The officer was detained by his colleagues in Alicante for the alleged crimes of bribery, infidelity in the custody of documents and violation of secrets. His arrest was carried out within the framework of a joint operation between Guardia Civil, National Police and Europol. The larger operation spanned six provinces with the aim of bringing down a criminal organization dedicated to the manufacture and distribution of counterfeit 500 euro bills, holiday rental scams and drug trafficking, among other crimes. An Elche court authorised a wiretap which led to the identification of the officer from Santa Pola who already had a record for other allegedly questionable acts.

The officer was summoned by the ECO in Alicante and after being arrested and refusing to testify, was released. Investigators consider that, according to the telephone conversations with one of the 37 people arrested for counterfeit bills, drug trafficking and other crimes, the officer provided information to an alleged trafficker in order to obtain narcotic substances, free of charge or an advantageous price. This information was gleaned thanks to his work in the Santa Pola barracks or through access to police databases. In one of the intercepted calls, the officer is heard informing an alleged trafficker of the arrest of an acquaintance. In another they arrange to meet in person after the Guardia Civil officer warned the gang member that he had detected on the computer that "something strange was coming out."

“Let's Go For Tapas!” 2021 coming soon After the success of previous events, the Association of Hospitality Companies of Torrevieja is launching the 6th Edition of "NOS VAMOS DE TAPAS" – “LET’S GO FOR TAPAS”. This gastronomic event aims to celebrate the tradition of tapas and the high quality of the tapas offer in Torrevieja and the Vega Baja region. LET'S GO FOR TAPAS! 2021 will be held from April 15 to 18 and from April 22 to 25 (Thursday to Sunday) as long as health regulations allow it to take place. As a novelty for this year’s event, the format of the activity has been changed slightly, adapting it to the current situation caused by the pandemic. Establishments participating in ¡NOS VAMOS DE TAPAS! must offer a ‘tabla’ or board composed of 4 tapas plus 2 drinks. Those restaurants and bars

interested in participating in the event must complete the registration form and the tapas board with two drinks should have a price of 10 euro (VAT included). The registration form is available from Correo@aehtc.net and must be submitted before April 5th along with one photo (high resolution, at least 300 dpi) of the tapas board being offered. The Board of Directors of the AEHTC has decided that this year registration will be free, so the usual €25 registration fee will NOT have to be paid as in previous editions. Any participant who has not filled in the form correctly and sent the image before the deadline will not be allowed to participate. For more information, participants can contact the association at Correo@aehtc.net or by phone (in Spanish) on 678 673 494.

Alicante neighbour reports Madridian woman for visiting second home A 78-year-old woman from Madrid was reported to Alicante police when neighbours discovered she had bypassed the perimeter closure of the Valencian Community to arrive to her second home on the Costa Blanca. According to Alicante City Council, this woman was located and identified on Thursday at around 5.30pm after a report received from a neighbour, informing police that despite the border closure, the Madrid woman had arrived to holiday on the coast. Now, t he 78-yearold faces a sanction that can carry a fine of up to 600€. Alicante Councillor for Secuirty José Ramón González reiterated the importance of "strictly complying with the rules this Easter to stop a possible fourth wave of the pandemic." In a statement, he added that there will be "maximum police control in these areas to protect us from new infections and prevent the incidence of the virus from increasing again", for which noncompliance with the perimeter closure will be monitored. Police will also be on the lookout for meetings of more than four people, illegal parties and the use of masks.

Easter travel confusion Find original and Spanish government spokesperson María Jesús Montero justified the fact that foreign travellers can arrive in Spain with negative PCR tests, as this is on the basis of "reciprocity" with action carried out by the other European countries. The Minister was quizzed about the apparent lack of coherence in travel policy. While foreign travellers can arrive in Spain over the Easter holidays, Spanish travellers are unable to move between regions because of the perimeter closures applied by regional governments. Montero admitted that while this may seem incoherent, it is necessary to respect the "rules of the game" in reciprocity with other countries. Therefore, foreign travellers can arrive with negative PCR test results, while they will have to respect the limitations that are applicable. Referring to the "cogovernance mechanism" between the government and the regions, Montero observed that if it is the case that people should not enter or leave a region in order that there is better control of the pandemic, the criteria must be respected, "even though they may appear to be inconsistent with the entry of people from other countries". The European Commission had previously asked Spain for "consistency" in the travel restrictions that it applies within

traditional crafts online

the country with respect to travel to and from other European Union states, pointing out that the risks linked to coronavirus are similar for national or cross-border travel. "The recommendation (proposed by the Commission and adopted by the 27) clearly states that since transmission and risk is similar for domestic and cross-border travel, member states should ensure consistency between the measures applied to the two types of travel," said the spokesman for Justice of the commission, Christian Wigand. At a press conference in Brussels, Wigand said, in response to a question about the situation in Spain, that he did not wish to make "specific" comments on the case, but would explain the Commission's position regarding travel movements within member states and between them. Freedom of movement within the Schengen borderless area is a fundamental right of Europeans over which the European Union

has powers; but it cannot interfere with the measures that each country decides to adopt within its territory to contain the pandemic, the spokesperson indicated. Meanwhile, new legislation voted in by UK parliament could mean fines of £5,000 for anyone leaving England without a reasonable excuse. Nonessential travel is currently banned in England under the stay-at-home order. Anyone leaving the country needs to fill out a travel declaration form declaring the nature of their trip. Upon their return home, UK residents are grilled by border patrol about the reason for their trip. The new legislation allows foreign travel for work, volunteering, or study abroad. Medical needs, funerals, and weddings are also legallypermitted reasons to travel out of England. People who are residents abroad are also allowed to leave.

What all artisans like best is making beautiful things and selling enough of them to make a living of their craft. Until a year ago traditional Spanish craftsmen spent all week in their workshop and weekends at local craft fairs selling what they had made during the week. However, when the pandemic came, they suddenly had no craft fairs and therefore no income. In the face of this setback members of Amata, a craft association that has been

organising craft fairs for more than 20 years, have created a Virtual Craft Village, with workshops, stores and fairs. In this Village you can watch the artisans at work, you can buy original craft items and browse

some forty craft stalls. The Village will continue even when the artisans can once again participate in actual craft markets, because the main advantage of the Village is that you can visit it at any time and wherever you live. Spain hopes number of tourists rebounds Spain hopes the number of foreign tourists visiting its sunkissed islands and picturesque villages can rebound this year to half pre-pandemic levels, Tourism Minister Reyes Maroto said on Monday. "Maybe the ideal goal is ... to get half of the tourists we had in 2019. This, for the industry, would be an achievement," she said in an event held by Europa Press news agency. In 2019, Spain had the world's second highest number of

foreign visitors at more than 80 million. This plummeted by more than 80 percent to 19 million tourists in 2020, the lowest level since 1969, as a result of the travel restrictions imposed to curb the pandemic. While tourism accounted for around 12 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2019 and one job in eight, activity plunged in 2020. The industry accounted for between 4 percent and 5 percent of Spain’s national output, according to

estimates from the Funcas thinktank. The Spanish government is among countries pushing hard for international vaccine certificates to be ready for the summer season. Tens of thousands of German tourists arrived in the Balearic islands at the weekend, in a welcome boost for local tourism that has created some controversy at home as Spaniards cannot go because of a travel ban.

Cadbury finally explains why Twirls aren’t Flakes covered in chocolate Thanks to someone on the internet, everyone has been wondering if Cadbury Twirls were in fact just Cadbury Flakes covered in chocolate. Making us all question everything we thought we knew about Cadbury chocolate. TikTokker @thegoosefighter posted a video which claimed that a Twirl and a Flake are basically exactly the same thing. In the video, he points to both chocolate bars and says five words that will haunt us forever: “They’re the same thing, man.” But here’s the thing – turns out a lot of people have thought this for years! Comments on @goosefighter’s video include, “In other news… water is wet and fire is warm! Everyone already knows this.” Luckily, Cadbury has now set the

record straight. A Cadbury rep finally broke the compnay’s silence to set the record straight. “Both Cadbury Twirl and Cadbury Flake bars are made with the Cadbury chocolate that we all know and love. “We can confirm they are not one and the same, how each of them are made is a secret though, known only to our brilliant chocolate makers.” So there you have it, the balance of the universe is restored – they are different. Also, not that we need more validation, but another comment on the TikTok helped confirm that Flakes and Twirls are totally different: “You can melt Twirl. But you can’t melt Flake. It’s a completely different type of chocolate.” That’s true: you really can’t melt a Flake...now you are all going to buy and Flake and try and melt it!

Supersimple way to chill wine and beer Picture the scene: the sun is out, you’re finally allowed to have a drink with a group of your friends and family, and life is just generally pretty good for the first time since March 2020. Well, things are generally good until you realise you forgot to put that bottle of wine you were so excited to buy in the fridge. It’s just been sat in your Bag For Life on the kitchen counter all morning. Luckily, all is not lost and your garden gettogether isn’t doomed – there’s still hope for you and your warm rosé. This is because there is a super-simple way to chill wine and beer fast. Thanks to this super-easy hack, you can chill wine and beer in just seven minutes. All you have to do is wrap the bottle in damp kitchen roll or a damp tea towel and stick it in the freezer. When you take it out in seven minutes, you’ll be left with an ice-cold beverage for you and your guests. So, your wine is now nice and cool, but you want it to stay that way, right? And you know ice cubes will just water your wine down, and nobody wants that. So, next time you know you’ll be wanting an ice-cold glass of wine, stick a few grapes in the freezer a few hours before. Once they’re frozen, you can pop them in your glass of wine and they’ll keep it cool without diluting your precious, precious booze.

Pina Colada Bailey’s is summer in a glass As always here in sunny Spain, we are going to have a pretty nice summer this year. If things carry on going the way they are, we should be able to see even more friends and family soon. And by summer, hopefully things will be back to some kind of normality, which of course obviously means… boozy BBQs! Just think of all the tasty summer drinks and cocktails you could be enjoying in a few months. And now forget about them all. Because the only thing you’ll be drinking this summer is Baileys’ new flavour pina colada. The super-tasty beverage is described as “a blend of Baileys irresistible Irish Cream with the flavours of creamy coconut and sweet, juicy pineapple to create a smooth and creamy drink that’s ready to serve straight from the fridge.” There are just so many wonderful words in there, what’s not to like. Right now, Baileys Colada is only available in the US, but it will be coming to the UK and Europe in the not-sodistant future, so keep an eye out in supermarkets – especially to overseas specialists. And of course, as soon as we know when and where you can buy it, you’ll be the first to know. If the rest of the Baileys flavours are anything to go by (red velvet cupcake, apple pie, pumpkin pie and salted caramel), pina colada flavoured Baileys is going to go down very, very well. Literally…,

Healthy smoothies These meals in a cup can get a bad rap for their high sugar content and weak macros, but when blended right, you can make your smoothie work for whatever your health goal. Even better these healthy smoothies taste like milkshakes...

smooth. Depending on how thick you like your weight-loss smoothies - and how powerful your blender or food processor is - you may need to thin these out with a little liquid, such as non-fat milk.

Here are the four things you need to create your own tasty, healthy weightloss smoothies. 1. Liquid Base: Dairy milk (1 percent or non-fat) because it's rich in vitamin D and calcium, which can help your body break down fat. But non-dairy alternative milk, like soy and almond, are fine too as is flavoured water. 2. Lean Protein: Getting protein at every meal helps you maintain lean muscle mass, which means you burn more calories throughout the day. Your best bets: plain non-fat yogurt, silken tofu, or unflavoured protein powder. 3. Healthy Fats: These give you energy, make your protein shake for weight loss actually satisfying, plus help your body absorb vitamins. Use up to two tablespoons of an ingredient that contains the good - that is, monounsaturated - kind, like avocado, seeds, or nuts. 4. High-Fibre Carbs: Any fruit will do, but raspberries and blueberries deliver the most fibre and the least amount of sugar. As for veggies, spinach and cucumber have the mildest, easiest-to-mask flavours. Put the liquid in first, then add the solid ingredients, and blend until

Tropical Morning Smoothie Good morning, sunshine! A sweet mix of mangoes, pineapple, and banana will surely pep you up for the day ahead. Makes 1 serving • 6 ounces plain nonfat Greek yogurt • 1/2 cup fresh or frozen mango chunks • 1/2 cup fresh pineapple chunks • 1 frozen banana, chopped • 2 tablespoons ground flaxseed Sweet Spinach Weight-Loss Smoothie Grapes, spinach, pear, and avocado? Sounds like a crazy flavour combo for a weight-loss smoothie, but we promise all you’ll taste is the fruit. The avocado lends luxurious texture and the spinach offers an undetectable dose of vitamins. Makes 1 serving • 6 ounces plain nonfat Greek yogurt • 2 cups spinach leaves, packed • 1 ripe pear, peeled, cored, and chopped • 15 green or red grapes • 2 tablespoons chopped avocado • 1 to 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice Chocolate Chia Cherry Smoothie Johnston put together this amazing antioxidant duo of dark chocolate and cherries to make this weight-loss

smoothie taste like dessert. But chia seeds turn it into a nutritional powerhouse - just a tablespoon packs two grams of protein and more than five grams of fibre to keep you full till lunch. Makes 2 servings • 1 cup unsweetened nut, soy, or dairy milk • 2 tablespoons chia seeds • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder • 2 cups pitted, halved cherries • 1 medium-size ripe banana • 4 to 5 ice cubes Mixed Berry Cobbler Smoothie Opt for coconut milk in this antioxidant-rich mixed berry weight-loss smoothie for plenty of healthy fats to keep you satisfied. Makes 1 serving • 1/2 cup almond, hemp seed, or coconut milk • 1/2 cup fresh or frozen blueberries • 1/2 cup fresh or frozen strawberries • 1/2 cup fresh or frozen blackberries • 2 to 3 Medjool dates Nut Butter Smoothie Almond butter and protein powder give this protein shake for weight loss some real staying power. Peanut butter is fine, if you can’t get almond. Makes 1 serving • 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk • 1/2 cup water

• 1 tablespoon almond butter or other nut butter • 1 scoop whey protein powder • 1 teaspoon honey • 7 to 8 ice cubes

• • • • •

1 tablespoon goji berries 1/4 teaspoon gingko powder 1/2 teaspoon flaxseed oil 1/2 teaspoon coconut oil 1/4 ripe avocado, peeled and chopped • Scant 1/2 cup pomegranate juice, coconut water, or green tea

Berry, Flaxseed, and Pomegranate Smoothie This weight-loss smoothie offers healthy fats, protein—and a big brainboosting benefit. It’s spiked with the ancient Chinese herb gingko, which may help improve cognitive function and prevent memory loss. Makes 1 serving • 1 small handful fresh or frozen blueberries • 3 strawberries, stemmed and chopped • 2 teaspoons shelled hemp seeds • 1 teaspoon acai berry powder

Basic Fruit Weight-Loss Smoothie You can use any fruit in this weightloss smoothie. Experiment with frozen peaches, tropical fruit mixes, or anything you have handy. Makes 1 serving • 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk • 1/2 cup water • 1 cup frozen mixed fruit • 1 scoop whey protein powder • 4 to 5 ice cubes

Impact of Covid19 on eye health By Prof. Jorge L. Alió Professor of Ophthalmology at Miguel Hernández University The COVID-19 pandemic is affecting our population in an unexpectedly intense and prolonged way. As a consequence, eye complications are appearing and warnings related to some of the problems that arose at the beginning of the pandemic are being ignored. All of this has had a negative impact on eye care and eye surgery. The eye is the target organ for COVID-19 because the conjunctiva is directly exposed to coronavirus, which makes an eye an important portal of entry for the virus. This does not occur in the cornea, which due to its surface receptors and anatomy proves to be an impenetrable shield for the virus. Hence, it appears that 30% of those infected with COVID-19 suffered from conjunctivitis and had the virus in their tears and could have transmitted it to other people as has been demonstrated in a number of scientific studies. Moreover, it has been found

that other structures of the eye are also affected by the virus, although very marginally. It should be also mentioned that it is more difficult to infect a patient if he or she wears glasses. So, in places with a high risk of infection (especially hospitals, places where patients are in enclosed spaces such as nursing homes, etc.) the use of protective eyewear is recommended. Studies conducted in China show that People who wear glasses contract COVID-19 up to 30% less often compared to people who do not wear glasses, which proves the effectiveness of glasses as a preventive measure. Long-term mask wearing can also affect eyes. The proximity of some models to the eyes, especially when they go up very close to the lower eyelid, has been making glasses usage very uncomfortable (this is the ideal time to wear contact lenses or undergo a surgery for myopia correction or any other refractive issues the patient may suffer from). Moreover, it has been proven that blepharitis and dry eye symptoms can be caused by long-term mask wearing. These minor diseases

are very uncomfortable and annoying. They affect people in their workplace and cause discomfort which requires attention. Using eye drops with a suitable composition, applying hydrating eye cream on the lower eyelids and choosing a mask that is not too close to the eyes are very important elements of eye hygiene, especially now, when we are facing such a long period of mask wearing due to the evolution of the epidemic. Fortunately, ophthalmic manifestations of COVID-19 are not significant at the moment and don´t have any particular implications other than those typically present after viral conjunctivitis, which are selflimited. Awareness of preventive care can help keep the eyes healthy, avoid the infection and prevent subsequent virus spread. Application of preventive measures, knowledge of ophthalmologic manifestations, hygiene regulations and prudence are the best measures to adhere to currently. Take care of your eyes during the pandemic.

New AstraZeneca trial data Strong coffee before exercise 'could burn more fat' raises more unwanted vaccine questions Despite extensive evidence and repeated regulatory assurances that the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine is safe to use, confidence in the life-saving jab remains worryingly low. From questions over its efficacy among the elderly, to reports of blood clots in some recipients, the vaccine’s rollout has been repeatedly slowed and hampered outside of Britain. Encouraging trial data from the US raised hopes that any lingering doubt surrounding the jab could finally be put to bed. Hours later, however, new concerns were raised by American health officials that AstraZeneca had included “outdated information" in its large-scale study, which may have provided "an incomplete view of the efficacy data”. Dr Anthony Fauci, the White House’s chief medical adviser, said the company’s interpretation of the trial results seemed to be “in my mind ... an unforced error”. “I was sort of stunned,” he said, by how positive the results were, even compared with previous trial data from the company. “We felt that we could not remain silent.”

The setback, at a time when millions of people around the world are waiting to be vaccinated, threatens to further undermine faith in the jab. Already, research suggests that large chunks of Europe have lost complete faith in the vaccine, once heralded as a tool that could

bring an end to the pandemic on account of its simple logistical requirements – foremost, that it can be kept at fridge temperature for months – and low costs. A recent YouGov poll of 8,000 people across the continent found that 55 percent of Germans now consider the jab to be unsafe – a 15-point increase in a month – while 32 percent consider the vaccine to be safe. In France, 61 percent of the people surveyed considered it to be unsafe. Both

Spain and Italy saw a 27-point rise in the number of people who no longer trust the vaccine. The latest AstraZeneca trial, which has been conducted in sites across America, Chile and Peru, is ongoing, with recent results based on interim analysis of data that has a cut-off point of 17th February – a detail not initially revealed by the company. This means that any important developments seen in the trial after that date, which could impact conclusions drawn around the vaccine’s efficacy and safety, have yet to be taken into consideration. But although AstraZeneca failed to provide this initial timeline in its press release, it made clear its findings were not final or definitive. The pharmaceutical giant said it would “continue to analyse the data and prepare for the primary analysis to be submitted” to the US drugs regulator in “the coming weeks”. The rest of the world will watch on in the meantime, waiting for answers from yet another perplexing episode that is likely to fuel anxieties over the vaccine.

Stranger Danger I had suggested to my elderly friend repeatedly that she keep her front gate locked, and only answer the door to people she knew, or had made prior arrangements with. Sadly, she was robbed of money that she kept in the house after the caller, a man in his 30s, convinced her that he was a neighbour who was locked out of his home having lost his keys, and could he use her telephone to call a Locksmith. She allowed him in, and later told Police that he had distracted her by asking for a glass of water. Please can you inform your readers that these scammers are again doing the rounds. My friend lives in the Villa Martin area. Thank you for writing in. This is an age-old scam that's been going for years. It is not necessary for homeowners to open their front door to anyone they don't know. Thankfully here in Spain most of us have front gates or grills, and we should keep them securely locked at all times. The advice is not to open your front door to anyone, unless you know them, have a prearranged appointment, or if you have ordered something from a particular delivery company; and even then, you can do business through the gate. Think before you act. If you are vulnerable, or elderly please telephone a friend if you are unsure when someone is at your front door. Also, please be vigilant when taking telephone calls. The scammers also pose as bank employees, and also from utility companies etc. Remember genuine bank operatives will not ordinarily call you, and if they do you will be asked to go to their offices, rather than you being asked for your bank details over the telephone, which you should NEVER give out. Remember, the motto is 'If I don't know you, you're not coming in'. WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. A PSEUDONYM WILL BE USED IF YOU WISH. SARA READS ALL LETTERS AND CAN GIVE A PERSONAL REPLY. Drinking a cup of strong coffee 30 minutes before working out could burn more fat, a new study has found. Researchers from the Department of Physiology of the University of Granada (UGR) have shown that consuming caffeine half an hour before exercise significantly increases the rate of fatburning. The team also found that if participants drank strong coffee and then worked out in the afternoon, the fat burning effects were more prominent. For the study, a total of 15 men, with an average age of 32,

completed an exercise test four times at seven-day intervals, and drank 3 mg of caffeine – or a placebo – at 8am and 5pm. "The results of our study showed that acute caffeine ingestion 30 minutes before performing an aerobic exercise test increased maximum fat oxidation during exercise regardless of the time of day," lead author Francisco J. AmaroGahete explained. The results also showed that fat burning was also high if a workout took place in the afternoon without drinking coffee beforehand.

The study, published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, wanted to explore how effective caffeine was in helping to improve performance during exercise. "The recommendation to exercise on an empty stomach in the morning to increase fat oxidation is commonplace. However, this recommendation may be lacking a scientific basis, as it is unknown whether this increase is due to exercising in the morning or due to going without food for a longer period of time," Amaro-Gahete added.

More than 28% of drivers in fear of driving More than 28% of drivers suffer from amaxophobia, that is, fear of driving. This affects men and women almost equally, although men are more reluctant to acknowledge it publicly. The CEA Foundationlaunched a specific group therapy 8 years ago, through which more than 500 drivers have already passed, 80% of whom have overcome their fear and have returned to driving safely, controlling each of the effects they suffer when they look at the wheel. There are many victims who, after suffering a traffic accident, experience anxiety, stress, irritability and other symptoms,

prey to the fear that they have developed to drive. Driving becomes difficult and sometimes, even impossible, many people need to use the car daily for professional or private reasons and, despite suffering amaxophobia and its consequences, they continue to drive regularly, becoming their own factor and unrelated to road safety risk. All these circumstances have been highlighted in a digital conference organized by the CEA Foundation. Maribel Muñoz, head of the organisation of the free specific therapies of Fundación CEA, recalls that these specific therapies can be performed

thanks to the aid received from institutions, companies, organizations and individuals and without these donations or contributions it is impossible to continue helping victims of traffic accidents who want to resume driving and therefore their lives normally. Post-traumatic stress disorder Ignacio Calvo, an expert psychologist in amaxophobia, has made known the different symptoms suffered when one is afraid to drive and how to work on them from group therapy to control them while driving. Amaxophobia for a traffic accident victim is a posttraumatic stress disorder, accidents being one of the most obvious causes of the development of this problem. Jaime González, director of the CEA School of Driving and an expert in students with amaxophobia, states that people with this driving panic should resume their driving normally for their own good and for the good of road safety. It is important that drivers feel safe when driving, only then can they face adverse situations and avoid accidents and incidents in general.

Goodbye to the Triangle In summer, the process will begin whereas we will begin to say goodbye to the traditional emergency triangles that have been with us since July 1999. Emergency triangles are set to be replaced using a flashing orange light which, when fixed to the highest part of the vehicle, such as the roof, provides a more secure method of indicating that a vehicle is in trouble on the road. Officially, the lashing light is known as the V-16 signal. The reasoning behind the change is that, according to data from the DGT (not counting Catalonia and the Basque Country), between 2019 and 2020, 28 pedestrians were killed on the road after getting out of their vehicle. To this figure, we must add the 4 people who died in the same circumstances that have already been counted until January 31, 2021. How is it used? In the event of an emergency situation such as a breakdown, the light is placed on the highest possible part of the vehicle. We thus guarantee maximum visibility. To place it, we do not need to get out of the vehicle or walk along the road avoiding traffic, as was the case up to now with triangles. How do you find me? The device incorporates a geolocation system that, once activated, sends the location of

the stopped vehicle to the DGT 3.0 cloud every 100 seconds, so that this information reaches other drivers. From when? The use of the new devices comes into force on 1July 2021; however we will still be able to use traditional warning triangles or a light without geolocation until 1 January 2026. From that date, the only thing allowed to signal incidents will be the light signal with geolocation. Why has it changed? The modification of the V-16 signal (official name, according to the General Vehicle Regulations) is included in the Royal Decree that regulates

emergency services on public roads. Jorge Ordás, general deputy director of Mobility Management and Technology of the DGT, explains that the emergency triangles are removed due to the high number of fatal accidents that occurred when drivers left their vehicles to place or collect them after having suffered a mishap on the road. What if I must get out of the vehicle? According to the new regulations, “as a general rule”, we will leave the vehicle if there is a safe place off the road and always on the opposite side to the flow of traffic. If we cannot safely exit, we will wait for assistance inside the vehicle with our seat belt on.

Abbey Anglers On Tuesday the 23rd of March we visited the ElBosquet complex near Crevillente. Twenty one anglers took part and all covid rules and regulations were followed and the match was run in a very safe environment. We fished seven sections of three, two of these section were on the new pegs a1 to 7 and the rest were on pegs 26 to 40. Winner on the day after a short absence with a bad back was venue specialist Neil McBernie. Drawn on peg 37 he took mainly carp fishing shallow for 16.10kg. Second was Mr Pastry himself, Terry Brindley who did indeed fish the paste on peg 26 and took several carp for 14.38kg. Third place was taken by Richard King on the new peg 5. Richard fished his shiny new pole across and caught several big mullet and carp for 12.70kg. In general this new section fished quite well and is full of very big mullet and lots of small bass along with barbell and carp. Other section winners were Barry Homer on peg 3 with 12.04kg, Richard Smith peg 31 with 6.88kg, Alan Smith on peg 34 with 4.38kg and finally Tony Felstead with 9.08kg from peg 39. The pairs competition had an unusual result with Barry Homer taking first and second place. When we have an odd number someone gets two partners.

Petina rises up the rankings!

Firstly, he won the pairs competition paired with Richard King with 24.74kg and came second with Russell Davidson with 21kg. Rods N Reels The Following day Rods N Reels visited the same complex. Only 15 anglers took part and we fished pegs A1 to 4 and 8 to 16. Winner on the day was again Neil McBernie. He performed what was described by anglers near him as a master class in fishing the long pole up in the water with pellet. He took numerous carp from peg 11 for a magnificent 43.74kg. Fishing mainly at 16M in a wind without a bump bar whilst pinging pellets takes some doing. In second place was Terry Brindley who again took advantage of a favourable draw to catch carp on paste from peg 16 for 14.80kg. In third place was Richard Smith. Richard was draw on peg 3 on the new section he fished across on maggots and pellets to catch carp, barbel, bass and mullet for 14.76kg Other section winners included, the newly crowned wizard of Humberside Keith Hirst who weighed 8.40kg from peg 8 and Barry Homer who continued with his good comeback to the local match scene with 12.5kg from peg B1

were he fished maggot across on the pole. The pairs competition was obviously won by Neil McBernie and his joyful partner Geoff Tempest with 47.96kg. Second were Terry Brindley and Richard Smith. BREAKAGES. A new section I thought we would add as its always good for a laugh. John Waples, 1 top section. Please book on with Bill Reade to secure your place for next week For further details please visit our website www.abbeyangling.es Ian Brown

Our week began with a Yellow Ball (where the points scored are doubled) plus 2 to count on each hole. With 149 points first place went to Friedel Knebel, AnneMarie Weisheit, Olga Douglas and Mike Mahony (who also happened to bein the record scoring team back in 2017 who managed 171). Paul Brown, Reg Akehurst, Petina Murray and ‘Albert’ claimed the silver with 147 points. Wednesday and it was round two (of six) to decide this year’s champion golfer. With a remarkable 45 points Paul Brown won the day and shot way up the leader board. Petina Murray became a serious contender in the ladies competition with 41 points whilst Andy Martin had another good day scoring 38. Just the one ‘2’ today which meant that Pete Dunn went home with a nice pocketful of euros. Two teams finished with a total of 86 points in Friday’s ‘3-2-1 Dusty Bin’. Just edging it on countback were Joyce McClusky, John Dobson, Terry Field and ‘Albert’. Missing out were Bryan Neal, John Shervell, Mike Mahony and Andrea Martin. And remember, ‘I’ve spent

most of my life golfing - the rest I’ve just wasted’. Pues hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell

I mean, how else would we be expected to see the mighty San Marino, Albania and, er, Luxembourg otherwise? What, someone lost to Luxembourg? This kind of pointless pause in the domestic game normally has us scrabbling around for things to comment on but, fortunately, the football world has been kind to us in the last seven days by filling the column inches with all kinds of rubbish just begging to be looked at. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to be given a new contract even if Manchester United fail to lift a trophy this season - and given that the only thing they can still win is the Europa League, there’s no pressure to win that now.

please Harry Maguire, unless Varane speaks English.

scoring goals for fun. Well spotted - no centre-backs on that shopping list.

Another might be Erling Haaland who Solskjaer is constantly phoning (allegedly, allegedly) for ‘a chat’ and possibly, maybe suggesting Manchester is lovely in the winter. Have the rules changed? I am no expert, but I’d have thought that falls very much in the category of ‘tapping up, bigtime’.

Tommy and Tammy have fallen out at Chelsea. Abraham is likely to be sold this summer, regardless of whether Chelsea sign that Norweigan lad who everyone believes they are getting.

Having seen Jesse Lingard be more productive than Brogba in recent weeks, United are thought to be lining up an olive branch for the England international in the hope he can forget how they ushered him out of the door and return to the club bringing that new-found form with him. United, along with Manchester City, are being linked to Brazilian wonderkid Gabriel Veron who plays

Christian Pulisic isn’t planning to stick around to see it happen - he wants to play in the Olympics this year and leave Stamford Bridge, so a busy late-summer for him then. According to Jose Mourinho, Jose Mourinho is still one of the most ‘important’ managers in the game. He’s also a little-known super-sleuth and his current mission is to find out the identity of the club mole who has been telling people senior players do not like his training sessions. Jermain Defoe reckons Harry Kane

One might be Raphael Varane, who is said to have decided on a move to Old Trafford in the summer. That won’t

Arsenal legends Ian Wright and Nigel Winterburn are disagreeing on what Arsenal should spend their fairy-tale transfer budget on this July. Wright thinks Arteta should persuade Martin Odegaard to quit Real Madrid on a permanent basis and take up residence in North London. Winterburn thinks Arteta should get Jack Grealish from Aston Villa. I think we can all agree Wright’s thinking is slightly less insane. Chris Wilder wanted £4m to leave Sheffield United according to their owners - a million a win this season then. Mind you, it’s also a million for each shot on target Rhian Brewster has achieved since moving from Liverpool. Leeds United are tightening up their cyber-security defence after the recent hacking scandal at Man United - surely their priority should be on their actual defence? The aforementioned Paul Ince feels Gareth Southgate is handing England caps out like confetti - one of the players to benefit from Southgate’s generosity was Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins who has risen from playing non-league to scoring international goals against the mighty San Marino. Yeah, he probably found his stint at Weston-Super-Mare more taxing.

One club legend is moving on, though - Pele’s favourite defensive midfielder Nicky Butt has called it a day having achieved his coaching ambition of winding up Thomas Tuchel on the touchline. Butt doesn’t see eyeto-eye with John Murtough, the new appallingly titled football director at United - so has walked out. He probably won’t be out of work for too long as he is being lined up to join Roy Keane at Celtic when that car crash waiting to happen gets announced. Paul Ince thinks Murtough needs to pull his finger out and start signing “heroes” - and to think I thought Ince might be a United manager in waiting when he started his career so well at Macclesfield. Which heroes is Incey imagining, I wonder?

for Palmeiras in South America United do, after all, have a great success rate with players called Veron. King Klopp is plotting a summer spending spree - Liverpool are being linked to Dutch international Donyell Malan, Sheffield United’s Sander Berge, Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho and Patson Daka - Salzburg’s replacement for Haaland who is

needs to leave Tottenham if he wants to win anything - presumably because he thinks Tottenham aren’t ever going to win anything. Gareth Bale’s agent has been quick to dampen down any flames lit by his client claiming he was heading back to Madrid this summer by suggesting the comments were taken out of context the context being, incidentally, a

Albania’s plan to grow the grass under the feet of the England team on Sunday night nearly worked. Fortunately, Harry Kane scored his first England goal since 2019 and Mason Mount continued his quest to be the first name on the teamsheet for any manager who has ever managed him. In not facing a single shot on target, Nick Pope became the first England goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet in his first six matches - and if that fact is the most interesting thing to come out of this international break it tells you everything you need to know.
