Fire fighters stumble upon drug plantation in Torrevieja Fire fighters were in for a surprise when they came across a marijuana plantation when called out to tackle a fire at a residence in Torrevieja. The incident took place on Saturday when, just after 11.30am, emergency services received

reports of an explosion and fire on Calle Río Tajo in the Altos del Limonar Urbanisation on the outskirts of Torrevieja. Fire crews are used to tackling all sorts of situations and are trained for a number

of scenarios not associated with actual fires – opening doors during emergency rescues, cutting car crash victims from vehicles and animal rescue. However, fire fighters in Torrevieja this weekend were shocked when they were called to a fire which had broken out on the ground floor of a semi detached house in the area. Not only did the team discover a fire, but also a comprehensive marijuana plantation. One of the possibilities being considered by investigators is that the explosion and subsequent blaze could have been produced by an overload in the electrical supply necessary for the “indoor” cultivation of the plants. The fire caused significant damage in several rooms of the townhouse. The occupants of the house fled the scene of the fire, although not immediately, claim local reports.

Although it was nearby neighbours who alerted emergency services about the fire and not the occupants themselves, sources say that those responsible for the plantation would have been monitoring the area for a few minutes until the Local Police and the Guardia Civil arrived, at which point they hastily left the area. Fire fighters protected themselves with breathing apparatus and entered the property to successfully tackle the blaze. Discoveries of marijuana plantations in residential homes have been on the up in recent months, partly as a result of investigations carried out by the Guardia Civil in the region who are cracking down on such activities. This last week alone, the central command of the Alicante region Guardia Civil reported three such interventions - in Redován (see page 9 of this week’s edition), Torrevieja and

Orihuela Costa. In each case, the complete house or basement was dedicated to cultivation, in most cases with fraudulent hookups to the electricity supply.

Fourth wave feared Local beaches invaded in Spain

New safety measures at markets

The coronavirus incidence in Spain is continuing to rise day by day. The latest report from the central Health Ministry (at time of going to press) released on Thursday, reflects a new increase in the 14-day cumulative number of coronavirus cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The national average went from 167.97 on Wednesday to 174.52, with the data point creeping back toward the “extreme risk” limit barrier of 250 as defined by the Spanish government. The regions of Madrid, the Basque Country and Navarre, as well as the North African cities of Melilla and Ceuta, have already exceeded the 250-mark. This rise reflects the fact that more and more coronavirus cases are being diagnosed. Last week the ministry reported 9,901 infections – that’s nearly 3,000 more than the previous Thursday, when the figure was 7,041. Two weeks ago, on 25th March, the number was

The Councillor for Markets, Víctor Bernabéu, has announced the new task that the council has allocated to the municipal company ILDO, in order to "provide the services of assembly, disassembly of access points and general control of the necessary security measures due to COVID-19 in the markets and flea markets of Orihuela city, coast and villages.” ILDO workers will carry out different functions from this week in the different markets and flea markets that the city of Orihuela organises across the municipality. Councillor Bernabéu said: “We are convinced that ILDO workers will perform an extraordinary job as they have been doing since the beginning of the pandemic with disinfection work in various locations, they are very professional and we need to count on them to ensure compliance with the measures of health and safety at our markets.” Among the tasks to be carried out by ILDO is the assembly and disassembly of the safety circuit and pedestrian routes, market access control points; cleaning and management of chemical toilets; supply materials such as information brochures, disinfectant gel, marking tape, the control of access and capacity, ensuring the use of the mask and disinfectant gel by visitors, among others. The cost of this service, which will last for a total of 12 months, is 99,364 euros. The Department of Markets has set up a one-way communication group on WhatsApp to send fast and direct information to merchants about news or changes that may occur and ensure the process runs smoothly.

6,393 cases, 3,500 fewer than those reported on Thursday. The growth in infections is sustained and is gradually gaining pace. Another data point that reflects this rise is the positivity rate of coronavirus tests: 8.18 percent of those carried out came back positive, according to Thursday’s report, compared to 6.84 percent a week ago. The pandemic is worsening in all of Spain’s regions apart from in the Canaries and Catalonia. The biggest rise, for now, is in Andalusia, where the incidence of the virus has grown 40 percent since last Thursday. In the North African city of Ceuta, the figure has risen 47.77 percent in seven days. Navarre is the region with the highest incidence, at 379.46, followed by Madrid with 315.49. The areas with the lowest rates are here in the Valencian Community (34.64), the Balearic Islands (64.27), Galicia (67.33) and Murcia (67.36).

Local beaches are reporting high numbers of jellyfish-like creatures know as ‘sea rafts’. The images of vast swarms of electric-blue sails covering the ocean’s surface and littering the sand are indeed spectacular, but people might well wonder what exactly these strangelooking beings actually are. And this of course leads to the next question – should we be afraid of them? Velella velella (to give them their scientific name) are often assumed to be a type of jellyfish but, while biology does lump them in with jellyfish, sea anenomes, and corals in a group known as Cnidaria, Velellas are not all that closely related to the common jellyfish. The beaches of the Vega Baja have been dyed blue as the large number of ‘sea rafts’ that have appeared on the coasts of Orihuela, Torrevieja, Guardamar del Segura. The creature is very common in the Mediterranean and although it is

related to the dreaded jellyfish, it is totally harmless, since its tiny tentacles cannot penetrate human skin. They are unable to move on their own and so they float in the water and are transported thanks to a structure like a sail, which gives them their name. These animals can get stranded alive, in which case a dark blue mass will be observed, or already dead, leaving a whitish structure. The velella are one of the typical foods of the loggerhead turtles that, will no doubt be having a feast before they vanish. But the sailboats also have other predators that are stranding on the beaches of the region in these days. However, bathers and paddlers beware as the stinging and luminescent jellyfish Pelagia noctiluca have also appeared, and if they come into contact with your skin will sting and leave you needing medical assistance.

No more dangerous dogs A law dating back 22 years requiring owners of certain dog breeds to register them with the council, pay a tax and keep them muzzled and on a lead could be about to change now that Spain's government is considering a review of the 'dangerous' label. Director-General of Animal Rights, Sergio García Torres, spoke at the political conference organised by the Spanish Royal Canine Society, and advocated the 'dangerous breeds' criteria be assessed on a 'dog-by-dog' basis. Most people who have any contact with animals have met pitbulls, Rottweilers, Dobermanns or other, similarly-categorised ‘dangerous’ dogs who are complete 'softies' and would not harm a fly, whilst some dogs who have shown aggressive behaviour may be of breeds not on the 'compulsory registration' list. García Torres and the Royal Canine Society are concerned that the 'potentially dangerous' list creates prejudice against entire breeds which may not be at all justified in a high number of individual cases. To this end, a law reform under way is seeking to 'validate the behaviour' of specific animals 'without taking into account the given breed they were born into'. Replacing Law number 50/1999, the legislation will cover dogs whose character means they need 'special handling' or 'expert management', and require them to be trained in behaviour improvement techniques to prevent, or

stop, them being 'dangerous'. Unlike in other countries, Spanish legislation does not automatically require a dog who attacks a human to be put to sleep – in fact, this is avoided as far as possible and would only happen where the animal was a serial public danger and too 'far gone' for even canine behavioural experts to retrain them to be safe. García Torres says he wants national law to work towards an end to pets being dumped and for zero animal euthanasia except on purely humane grounds, where the creature is actively and incurably suffering and no remedies are available in life – much along the same grounds as the newly-approved euthanasia law for humans. The Royal Canine Society (RSCE) has called for legislation that makes dog identification universal, protects and promotes native breeds, accredits the work of 'ethical and responsible breeders', and actively educates children and young people in 'values that encourage respect and empathy for animals'. García Torres says the law being prepared by Spain's government – the draft of which is at the 'public information' stage, meaning it can be consulted by society and is open to appeals – focuses on streamlining the 17 different regional government laws, none of which are exactly the same, and on setting up an 'Animal Protection Registration System' (SRPA). The planned SRPA will cover a blanket identification system, with details of domestic animals on one single national

database that can be consulted in real time for any pet in the country, as well as 'guarantees' of 'professional standards' in animalbased businesses, in rescuing neglected, dumped or illtreated animals, and also covering pet shelters. A National Register of Professionals will be set up for dog trainers to sign up to, and which owners can consult to find a legitimate behavioural expert near them. Official breeders Another list, a National Pet Breeders' Register, will include amateurs as well as professionals, but only those named on it will be allowed to breed, other than for purely personal reasons. One of the new criteria for breeders will be for all pets or other domestic animals being bred for purchase to be logged on the identity register within the first three months of their lives and before they are sold. A separate 'offenders' register' will be created, to block names of people or organisations convicted of ill-treatment

Prince Philip has passed away A statement from Buckingham Palace said: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully [...] at Windsor Castle. Further announcements will made in due course. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.” The Duke, aged 99, was married to Queen Elizabeth II for more than 70 years and became the longest-serving consort in British history. The ceremonial royal funeral will be held at St George's Chapel, in the grounds of Windsor Castle, at 15:00 BST on Saturday, 17 April. The event will be televised.

or neglect and prevent their being able to own any animals. Another issue García Torres wants to tackle is an amendment to the Penal Code to provide for much stiffer punishment for animal abuse and neglect. In Spain, unless the offender has a previous custodial conviction, a prison sentence of less than two years does not have to be served, meaning in practice, almost nobody ends up behind bars for ill-treatment of animals. The new animal legislation will also try to encourage adoption as much as possible, since many shelters are full to bursting with abandoned or rescued pets who are crying out for new, loving homes.

Catral shooting: Two of the three arrested sent to prison Police are still making progress in investigating the shooting that took place in Catral on Good Friday. Three people were arrested and brought to appear before a judge in Orihuela. Two were sent to prison and the third has been provisionally released but is under obligation to appear each week in court to present himself. His passport has also been seized. One of the two sent to prison is a man who was admitted to Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital in Murcia with three gunshot wounds. The man was brought to hospital by a friend for treatment but none of the shots were life threatening. One of the shots entered his chest and exited his arm without hitting any vital organs. Sources say the wounded man claimed not to be involved in the shooting but had been caught in the

crossfire. However, Judicial Police appeared to have enough evidence to detain the man and so, arrested him in Murcia and transferred him to Orihuela to give a statement before he was remanded to prison. The shooting occurred at around 12.30pm on Good Friday in the centre of the town, on Calle Almoradí. After reports emerged of shots being fired, Guardia Civil were dispatched immediately to the scene but those involved had already fled. Officers located a vehicle with three people which fled in the direction of Orihuela. The three were tracked down and arrested, charged with a series of crimes including drug trafficking. Initial reports suggest the shooting was over a settling of accounts for drug related matters.

New market supports local Food Banks

A new market kicked off with great success this month in Mar Azul. The first edition of the monthly market raised €145 for the La Florida Friends Foodbank. Stallholders included clothing, art and crafts, jewellery, home decor, food and a tombola. Organisers said, “Each time we are going to nominate one of the Food Banks as recipient from money from pitches, tombola and food donations from customers. Each stall holder will also bring food to make up a separate hamper. The market is held in the Pool Bar Mar Azul, next to Restaurant Christopher. It’s a fab venue with a pool, full bar for cold beverages and Christophers put on a barbeque too. It starts at 11.30am till 3.30pm. As well as the money we raised, we also gathered a couple of bags of food for the food bank. Our next one should see 20 plus stalls with a wide variety of goods for sale and a drop off point for food donations too.” To book a pitch, people can phone Audrey on 711066651 or Fiona Gallagher 688792490. The next market takes place on 7th May 2021 and proceeds will go to the Blue Lagoon Food Bank.

Britons may not be able to holiday in Spain Brits may not be able to travel to some popular holiday destinations such as Spain or France if they fail to meet the Government's requirements. Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has confirmed that foreign holidays can resume on 17th May at the earliest. A traffic light system will be put in place to categorise countries based on their COVID-19 risk level. Mr Shapps said the move will allow Britain to “reopen travel safely and sustainably”. Each country will be labelled as either green, amber or red – each with different levels of restrictions. The Government’s Global Travel Taskforce said it will consider infection rates, variants prevalence, access to genomic sequencing and vaccination rates when determining the colour of each country. The vaccination threshold requirement could be as high as 50 percent. Currently under the system, British travellers would only be able to visit Israel and Gibraltar with the Seychelles and the Maldives also close to making the cut. However, here in Spain we are currently highly unlikely to be a busy getaway in May as the country has a vaccination rate below 15 percent. Despite

the fact the country is traditionally highly popular with Brits of all ages. France and Italy are also not close to making the cut to be a ‘green’ list country – both with similarly low vaccination rates. Countries under the ‘amber’ category may require British visitors to quarantine for 10 days on return and undertake more testing. Speaking to the BBC, Mr Shapps said: "This is the first time I'm able to come on and say I'm not advising against booking foreign holidays. Yes, you'll want to check what the

situation is in two or three weeks' time when that list - the green, amber, red, is produced. You'll want to know that you've got good holiday insurance and flexible flights and the rest of it. "But for the first time I think there is light at the end of the tunnel. “We'll be able to restart international travel, including cruises by the way, in a safe and secure way, knowing about the vaccinations, everything we know about the disease this year, and of course that abundance of caution - having the tests in place."

All over 80s have been vaccinated, claims Ministry Valencia’s Ministry of Health claims that all citizens over 80 have been vaccinated, at least with a first dose, despite several people within this age group claiming that they have not yet had their first dose. Health authorities confirmed on Saturday that it had reached the goal of vaccinating all those over 80 which, according to the publication of the latest data update from the Ministry of Health, is a total of 276,733 people. There is some confusion over figures as the aim was to vaccinate 276,531 people over 80 – so 100.1% of octogenerians have had at least one jab. However, the figure could reflect those that turned 80 very recently. In any case, there are several people over 80 who claim not to have received the first dose. Specifically, reports in Sunday’s edition of Información claim delays Vinalopó and Torrevieja. In some cases, patients were not notified, while, in other cases there were errors in the data, due to the uncertainty of the patient or other causes. Meanwhile, public health plans to administer 213,834 doses of the Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca vaccines this week. Most of these will go to people born between 1942 and 1946

CostaBlancaPeople 13th - 19th April 2021

(106,750 doses of Pfizer) and between 1956 and 1958 (70,000 doses of AstraZeneca). 17,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine will go to people with at risk health conditions. The remainder, making up the total, are second doses pending. In the case of the groups of the age groups that are next in line, Ministry officials emphasize that they should not go to their vaccination centre if they have not received an SMS or a telephone call telling them to do so. No AstraZeneca for under 60s Spain decided it will not administer the AstraZeneca vaccine to under 60s amid concerns about blood clots. Spain limits vaccination with AstraZeneca to people over 60 years of age. The radical change in strategy leaves two million active "essential" workers, mainly teachers and police officers, who have already received the first dose in limbo. Spain, like a number of other European countries, declared late last week that it would be stopping use of the controversial Oxford-AstraZeneca formula in people under 60. The decision came after the latest European Medicines Agency (EMA) confirmed a 'link' between the vaccine and the rare

blood clots found among relatively young, newly inoculated people, especially women aged between 16 and 60. The EMA do not know the cause and insisted that the benefits continue to outweigh the risks. The use of the vaccine is favourable among older people because the chances of becoming seriously ill or dying from covid far outweigh the chances of suffering complications caused by a blood clot. For the health workers waiting for their second dose of AstraZeneca, the Health department will study the possibility of inoculating them with another brand (an option that until now had been categorically rejected by the ministry's own specialists) or leaving them only with one dose, trusting that they will develop immunity – thought to be 70%, as promised by the laboratory. Head of the EMA Risk Assessment Committee, Sabine Straus, confirmed that the regulator has already documented 228 episodes of embolisms (169 brain and 59 abdominal), including 18 cases of deaths vaccinated people, after the administration of some 30 million doses.

Orihuela Council plans to build cemetery on the coast The local government is looking for a plot in Orihuela Costa, where there are about 30,000 residents on the padron, to locate a cemetery, as locals are forced to travel up to 35 kilometres to bury their loved ones. Orihuela Costa would be the ninth cemetery in Orihuela, one of the largest municipalities in the Valencian Community. Much of its population lives on its coastal strip, but the lack of a cemetery is forcing people to bury their dead miles away as the closest cemetery within the municipality is in Torremendo. Many residents on the coast decide to bury their relatives in cemeteries in nearby towns, such as Torrevieja, Pilar de la Horadada, San Miguel de Salinas or Los Montesinos. However, their cemeteries are now only accepting burials of families registered in those municipalities; a situation that has been complicated by the covid-19 pandemic due to the greater number of deaths. The residents of the Orihuela Costa have long requested to have a cemetery. Therefore, the Town Hall is now planning the construction of such a facility. At the end of last year, the Health area

transferred to the Town Planning and Heritage Department the problems due to the lack of a cemetery in Orihuela Costa so that they are now in charge of looking for the appropriate land for its construction within the municipal plots of land on the coast. Not an easy task since the plots must comply with strict regulations on mortuary matters. The main problem is that many of these plots, those that meet the characteristics to be able to locate a cemetery, are close to homes, and the City Council is aware that this could lead to the site being rejected by neighbours. The land needed to locate the cemetery must have special characteristics and be a considerable size, not only to accommodate the niches that are required in a cemetery, but also to have room for anticipated expansion during the 25 years following its

construction, as established by the regulations. Another handicap is its financing. It is a project that involves a level of investment that is difficult for a city council that currently has budgets carried over from 2018 to carry out. But it is a necessary

investment for an area with almost 30,000 registered residents and between 15,000 and 20,000 residents who reside without being on the padron. In addition, its population is becoming larger, more stable and older. A large number are European expat residents who, although some are repatriated when they die, the

Joint agreement The Orihuela Costa CLARO party explains that many residents on the coast end up opting for cremation against the will of the deceased, due to the difficulty of finding a niche in a cemetery closer than that of Orihuela, 35 kilometres away. The party spokesman gave an example of a resident who had to have his deceased wife kept for more than a week in the funeral home chamber due to the difficulty in finding a niche, which he finally managed to secure in Los Montesinos. The party is calling on the local government to look into the possibility of reaching an agreement with the Torrevieja City Council so that, with the planned expansion of its cemetery, it could offer a joint service, with spaces reserved for registered residents of Orihuela Costa. An option that municipal sources indicate has not been discussed, but might be considered.

Torrevieja family uninjured in house fire A family in Torrevieja were uninjured after a fire broke out inside their home. The fire started in the early hours of Friday morning in the kitchen of the house on Calle Ancora, near Avenida Cortes Valencianas. Just after 2am, neighbours alerted the fire brigade of smoke and flames coming from the house. The glass in the windows of some rooms had exploded due to the heat from the blaze. Inside the house at the time of the fire was a married couple of French nationality, a 3-year-old boy, an 84-yearold and two dogs. Luckily no one was injured in the fire and the family were able to leave the house of their own accord, said the fire department. Fire crews from Torrevieja worked until 3am to extinguish the flames.

Police swoop on Pilar pub party Local Police in Pilar de la Horadada have closed down a gathering in a bar out of hours. During routine surveillance on Saturday evening, officers noticed that there were a number of people still drinking on the terrace of a bar at 8pm, two hours after the official

closure time for the hospitality industry due to Covid measures. The officers made the out of hours drinkers leave the premises immediately and also found that several people who were inside the bar were not following the legal sanitary

measures. These offenders were warned for non-compliance and could receive fines. The people present were drinking alcohol, smoking and eating without respecting measures such as social distancing, use of masks and smoking is not allowed in a public place.

Young British man killed in tragic crash A young British man, aged just 24, was killed in a tragic accident just outside the Pilar tunnel on the AP7 motorway. The accident took place on Friday morning when for reasons currently under investigation, the man lost control of the vehicle and hit the central barrier which caused the car to flip several times before crashing 50

metres away, into the road at the entrance of the tunnel. The accident, which was recorded by traffic surveillance cameras, occurred at 11:20 am. The young man was the sole occupant of the vehicle. The

Information and Coordination Center received several calls from other drivers, warning of the terrible accident. A SAMU unit was dispatched but the medical team could only confirm the death of the driver. His body was transferred to the mortuary in Torrevieja and his family, living in La Manga, was informed.

Fundraising for the animal shelter Easter weekend was another great fundraising day at Misol Bar organised by Lisa and Lesley. The event was to raise funds for a local animal sanctuary. There were stalls, raffle tickets etc raising a total of €353. However ADAT (an association dedicated to the health and safety of animals) decided to match the money raised at the event, making the final total €706. The Sanctuary also fosters some of the cats that have difficulties and long time medications for the Albergue Shelter in Torrevieja, of which ADAT has many volunteers helping. Well done everyone. Spain introduces first ever climate change law For the first time in history, Spain is about to bring a Climate Change Law into effect in a real and determined attempt to halt rising global temperatures, harmful emissions and the death of the world's oceans, among other crucial planetary emergencies – but are the new criteria enough? Environmental groups do not think so. But some of their members believe it is at least a start, given that the country has never before had any such legislation, and the provisions within it are heading in the right direction. The law itself is not what has disappointed ecologists, but the scope of it – although the more optimistic of them believe that it is a framework which can be expanded when its deficiencies become apparent, that it is a legal instrument which can be referred to when lobbying, and that, overall, it is a useful springboard for greater action which has not, hitherto, been available. Drawn up by Spain's Commission for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge – part of the ministry of the same name, led by deputy president Teresa Ribera, which

deals with environmental and energy affairs, and which has been given full jurisdiction over the lawmaking process, meaning the contents do not have to go through to Parliamentary debate – the new legislation gained 22 votes in favour, five against (from the far-right party Vox), and 10 abstentions, from the right-wing PP and the independent liberal-

left Más País. The year 2050 is often cited by environmental experts – as a time by which increasing earth temperatures need to be kept to within specific limits, a time when countries have pledged to be carbon-neutral, and a time by which there will be more plastic in the sea than fish unless recycling means this material becomes a circular economy and it is no longer dumped. By the year 2050, Spain wants to

be completely carbon-neutral and for its electricity supply to be 100% renewable, with no fossil-fuel use at all – and has left the door open for this to happen earlier if possible. Other key element of the Law include: no more fossil-fuel mining, zero carbon, emission-free cars and healthier air in towns. Youth for Climate and Fridays for Future, organisations created through the inspiration of young Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, call the new law 'disappointing' and 'unambitious', saying they had expected a 'breath of fresh air' after the 'pessimism of the pandemic' and 'so many demonstrations and debates', but that the law-making panel 'has not listened to science'. Greenpeace and Ecologists in Action used that uniquelySpanish-language and highly-descriptive adjective, 'decaffeinated', to describe the new law, which they said was 'fundamental' and 'eagerly awaited for a long time', and question whether its terms will come anywhere near Spain's fulfilling its commitment to the Paris Agreement.

When selling your home establish realistic expectations upfront about its price. Some home sellers believe that it’s best to price their home high and negotiate down. The novice agent will buy into this concept when the seller suggests it, but an experienced agent knows the golden rule - overpricing a property will ultimately under value it in the end. At first glance, it seems to be a good idea, but it can be disastrous to profits. If a house is priced too high for too long, it will often linger on the market, and observant buyers will be suspicious as to why it’s not selling. Then if a realistic offer is made, the seller is often insulted that someone would offend them with such a “low offer.” But in reality, the offer made by the buyer is just fair market value or close to it. Pretty soon negotiations begin to ping back and forth, and it becomes more of an arm wrestle than a fact-based process. By overpricing a

property initially, a homeowner is actually at a disadvantage against the other homes in the area. When buyers view your property, comments will flow about what is missing in the home in comparison to the other houses seen on the home tour. Because of the elevated price, the seller’s property is psychologically thrown into a different class of homes. Their higher-priced home will be categorized with properties that have more amenities, or square meterage and in comparison with other homes legitimately priced in that range, it will appear to be lacking in value. Price your home according to market value.

Masterpiece nearly sold for €1,500 in Spain Before it was pulled from sale, lot 229, a small oil painting of the scourged Christ attributed to the circle of the 17th-century Spanish artist José de Ribera, had been due to go under the hammer in Madrid recently with a guide price of €1,500. Closer inspection, however, raised suspicions that the Crowning with Thorns may be the rather more valuable work of the Italian master Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, leading the Spanish government to impose an export ban on the painting. The canvas, which measures 111cm by 86cm, is now being studied by experts to determine its authorship. The possible misattribution may be understandable: Ribera, the son of a shoemaker, studied in Rome and was a noted follower of Caravaggio and an admirer of his use of chiaroscuro, the use of strong contrasts between light and dark. Spain’s culture ministry said it had moved quickly to place a precautionary export ban on the painting after receiving a call from experts at the Prado. Specialists at the museum said there was “sufficient stylistic and documentary evidence” to

suggest it could be an original Caravaggio. The ministry agreed to the ban at an emergency meeting last week and notified the auction house, Ansorena, which withdrew the painting from Thursday

evening’s auction. “Given the speed at which all this has been happening, we now need a thorough technical and scientific study of the painting in question,” said a source at the ministry. “There needs to be an academic debate about whether the Caravaggio attribution is plausible and accepted by the

scientific community.” Some are already convinced. The Italian art critic and MP Vittorio Sgarbi said he had recognised the painting as a Caravaggio last month after an artist friend and art history professor showed him a picture. “I see it and immediately realise that the work is by Caravaggio and think that with the help of funding I can get it back to Italy,” Sgarbi told Italian media on Thursday. “Its price could be around €100m€150m if you sell it privately, and €50m if you sell it to a museum such as Prado.” But not everyone agrees. “It’s not a Caravaggio,” Nicola Spinosa, one of the top scholars of 17th century Italian painting, told il Corriere della Sera. “In my opinion the painting is a highquality Caravaggesque.” The Prado, which was alerted to the issue, said none of its experts had been able to inspect the painting in person since it was withdrawn from the auction. But it is possible that the museum’s specialists could be called on should the Madrid regional government decide to declare the work a cultural heritage item, which would strengthen its legal protection against being sold.

Redovan drug gang busted The Civil Guard has dismantled a criminal organisation that was dedicated to the cultivation and sale of drugs. To do this, the gang members occupied houses in a district of Redován and threatened the neighbours with firearms. In the raid phase, almost 100 officers were required to make 7 simultaneous searches, resulting in 7 detainees and numerous weapons and ammunition being seized. The events date back to last July when the Civil Guard in Callosa de Segura learned that numerous threats with firearms were taking place in the Rincón de Redován district, as well as an increase in drug trafficking activity, which led to considerable social alarm in the area. The Investigation Area of the Civil Guard of Callosa together with the Territorial Team of the Almoradí Judicial Police began investigations under the code name “Operation Rhescon”. As a result of these investigations, officers found that the main suspects all belonged to the same family. In addition to being able to verify the threats and drug trafficking of which there

was conclusive evidence, the investigators discovered how their criminal activity had expanded with the “indoor” cultivation of marijuana. In order to grow the crop, the gang occupied adjacent abandoned houses, which they enabled for their activity with electricity wired from the urban street lighting. Due to the magnitude of the illicit activities carried out by this criminal group, the Civil Guard deployed a broad operation with about 100 active officers from numerous specialties, including the Citizen Security Unit (USECIC) of Alicante and Torrevieja, the Reserve and Security Group (GRS3) of Valencia, various teams from the Cynological Service (including drug, money and weapons detecting dogs), the Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) of Orihuela, as well as different personnel from the Post of the Civil Guard of Callosa de Segura and Torrevieja.

The seven people arrested were charged with the crimes of belonging to a criminal group, threats with firearms, drug trafficking and cultivation and electricity fraud. The detainees are five men and two women, all of Spanish nationality and aged between 28 and 54 years. Two firearms and 200 cartridges of ammunition, three airguns, 10 large bladed weapons, more than 400 euros of cash, two high-end vehicles and numerous materials designed for the indoor planting of marijuana were found. The Court hearing the case was in Instruction Court No. 3 of Orihuela, which after receiving the detainees released them with charges pending a full court case.

Military court for man who breached Guardamar antenna restricted area The curious case of a man who jumped the fence at the Guardamar radio antenna (La Torreta de Guardamar) during full lockdown will be heard by a military court, it emerged this week. Because of the military element of the case, the man will not be tried in the usual manner for ‘serious disobedience’ which would be heard at Torrevieja’s Court Number 1. Instead, he will be judged by a military court. The Supreme Court intervened during a conflict between defence and prosecution and eventually, Magistrate Carlos Lesmes determined that the man’s unauthorised access to the military compound constituted a ‘raid’ and as such, should be heard at a military court. The public prosecutor agreed. The incident occurred during the full lockdown of 2020, specifically on Friday 10th April 2020 when at around 10.20pm surveillance cameras detected the presence of a suspicious man who threw stones over the fence and after about ten minutes, jumped over the fence into the enclosure – a feat that is not easy given the high fencing surrounding the military enclosure. Once inside the fence, the man was concealed by the pine trees that surround the huge telecommunications antenna,

used by the Cartagena naval base and visible for miles around the Vega Baja. The station's own security detail and Guardia Civil units were dispatched to the scene to locate the intruder. Despite issuing instructions to ‘come out’ over the loudspeaker, police were only able to arrest the man an hour and a half later when he attempted to flee the scene. The crime of trespassing on military installations, for which this man is set to be tried, carries a penalty of between 3 months and 4 years in prison. For an additional charge of disobedience, he could serve between 3 months to 1 year or have to pay a fine. In the view of the Supreme Court, the incident was “a crime against the means or resources of national security or defence, of potential danger.” The telecommunications tower was built by the United States Army in the early sixties on Montcaio de Guardamar. For many years it was operated by US military personnel. As consideration for the use of Spanish land for its military installations, Spain received aid from the US for various projects. In Alicante, for example, the funding of the reforestation of an area of La Mata to avoid erosion around the salt lakes.

The tower remains still today the tallest structure in Spain at 380 metres, the tallest in the European Union, and the tallest military structure in Europe. Officials say that the antenna continues to be used today, despite the advancement in communications technology, for submarine communication. In recent years, the Navy replaced the permanent presence of military personnel at the tower with

remote video surveillance devices instead, investing €140,000 in 2019 in upgrading security around the 600,000 square metre military zone. Google Earth has blurred the area surrounding the ‘Torreta de Guardamar’ on its satellite imagery and Guardamar town hall managed in 2017, in coordination with the Ministry of Defence, to organize the first and only guided visits to the site.

Torrevieja police officer arrested for drug trafficking A Torrevieja Policia Local officer has been arrested, alongside four others, accused of drug trafficking. Guardia Civil arrested four men and a woman on Orihuela Costa, believed to be members of an organisation which sold marijuana and cocaine. The arrested woman belongs to the Torrevieja Local Police force and prosecutors say she used her status as a police officer to facilitate the distribution of drugs. Three of the detainees are charged with the crimes of drug trafficking and belonging to a criminal group, one of them is considered to be the "leader" of the organization, and is also accused of electricity fraud. The police officer is charged with drug trafficking, belonging to a criminal group and the dereliction of duty. This investigation began once another operation ended in September 2020, in which twelve members of a criminal organization involved in the cultivation and trafficking of marijuana in rented chalets across the Vega Baja region were arrested. As a result of the investigations carried out in the previous operation, investigators became aware that an officer of the Torrevieja Local Police could be involved, so a new investigation

was launched. Inquiries unveiled the involvement a neighbour of the police officer. It was discovered that this man looked after the "retail" end of the cocaine and marijuana distribution, as he sold the substances both from his home in Orihuela Costa and engaged in their distribution around Orihuela Costa and Torrevieja. According to Guardia Civil reports, drops were sometimes made by the officer, who took advantage of her position in order to notify the gang of police checkpoints. Authorities believe that on one occasion, while on duty and while the perimeter closure was in place on weekends, the police officer entered closed towns (at a time when towns with

more than 50,000 inhabitants were locked down at weekends), dressed in uniform and in an official vehicle, made trips between towns as part of the drug trafficking operation. Guardia Civil also discovered what they described as a “significant” marijuana plantation in a home linked to the gang. The operation drew to a close with the arrest of four men and one woman. In addition, 126 marijuana plants and other substances were seized. A judge ruled prison without bail for the leader of the gang while the others have been released but with charges. For her part, the police officer has been released with charges and has been prohibited from leaving the country.

State of Alarm to end President Pedro Sánchez has announced plans to end the 'State of Alarm' on 9th May this year. Sánchez says he has 'no plans' to extend it beyond its initial deadline. It was first declared on 14th March, 2020, then lifted towards the end of the spring as contagion rates showed a drastic improvement, but with the onset of autumn, a sudden spike which is being referred to as the 'third wave' meant numbers of positives and mortality figures rose to several times the level seen in the early part of last year when the entire country was in full lockdown, only permitted to leave the house for 'essential errands' such as supermarket shopping, and alone, and required to return home immediately. This drastic worsening of the pandemic, in Spain and in almost every other country on earth, led

Sánchez's government to declare another 'State of Alarm' in the autumn. But instead of continually reviewing and renewing it as it had done in the spring, the government opted to set it to run right through until May, since it was the only legal instrument it had available to allow them to call immediate blanket restrictions if needed. The fact that this legal instrument will not be extended beyond 9th May strongly hints the government does not feel it will have to impose any restrictions after that date. At present, restrictions remain in place, albeit 'lockdown' has not been part of Spain's collective vocabulary for nearly a year – the limitations involve a curfew between midnight and 05.00, which regional governments can extend up to two hours in either direction if they wish, plus a

compulsory reduction in numbers of people on premises such as in shops, and even in outside areas such as bar and restaurant terraces. Within this framework, each regional government has set its own rules according to official contagion figures – in some, bars and restaurants have only just reopened after a long shutdown, and a set closing time, typically anywhere from 6pm to 9pm, applies, with many regions having banned smoking on outside terraces. Smoking in indoor public places has been outlawed in Spain since the first day of 2011. Masks must still be worn everywhere outside the home, including in the open air and even where social distancing is possible, with no exceptions permitted except for when taking part in strenuous, active sports such as running or cycling.

Still Using Your UK Adviser? If you take financial advice from the UK but live in Spain, what do you need to think about after Brexit? 1. The end of passporting If you have a good relationship with your UKbased financial adviser, you may understandably wish to continue using them, despite now living in a different country. 2. The limits of UK advice If you still retain UK investments, a UK-based adviser may be able to continue supporting you there. But if you hold savings and investments with an EU-based institution, from 2021 they may not be able to accept instructions, such as top-ups, from a UK adviser.

3. The advantages of local knowledge As well as the legal and practical implications, you should also review whether an adviser based in a different country is best placed to help you take advantage of opportunities available to you here in Spain. For example: • Will they fully understand the intricacies of the tax regime and how it interacts with UK taxation? • Will they have in-depth knowledge of the local residence, domicile, tax, succession law and reporting rules? • Do they know about – and have access to – tax-efficient solutions that offer significant benefits to EU residents?

4. The suitability of UK planning Remember: financial planning that is tailored for a UK resident is unlikely to remain suitable once you become resident elsewhere. At Seagate we pride ourselves on putting our clients first. If you are still using your UK adviser, but would like to know what we can offer, then give us a call. As a firm of advisers that all previously worked for Lloyds Bank in the UK we believe that a good relationship with our client is at the heart of our business. GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP Sterling has stumbled after such a successful first quarter, and yet there wasn’t anything among the UK economic data releases to justify its collapse. Various news outlets have suggested that snags in the vaccination programme are to blame, another believes “traders are starting to questionthe destination” of the prime minister’s post-lockdown road map. Investor jitters could also be caused by concerns over the safety of Oxford-AstraZeneca’s vaccine, casting a shadow over the UK recovery. There are only four days in this shortened postEaster week, and for the first three of them sterling was the weakest among the major currencies. Since the previous weekly report last Thursday sterling has fallen by an average of 1.5%, with losses ranging from 0.2% to the USD and 2.4% to the CHF. The purchasing managers’ indices for manufacturing and services were both higher on the month and comfortably positive at 58.9 and 56.3 respectively. While the services PMI missed its 56.8 forecast, it was still seven points higher on the month and the best reading since August. The construction PMI at 61.7 was the highest in six and a half years. Investors have never needed a concrete reason to push the pound back and forth and they did not have one this week. All eyes will be on how the lockdown exit stages are executed as the UK moves towards reopening non-essential retail and hospitality (outside), next week.

EURO A different story for once for the euro, because while sterling blundered into the mire, the euro could do almost nothing wrong. It strengthened by an average of 0.3% over the eight days, adding almost two US cents and taking more than two cents off sterling. Economic data from the euro area, such as they were, tended to be helpful to the euro. The manufacturing PMIs last Thursday all came in comfortably above the breakeven line at 50. Results ranged from Greece’s 51.8 to Germany’s 66.6, a record high, with factory orders up by a monthly 1.2%. The services PMIs on Wednesday averaged out at 49.6, narrowly missing breakeven, while the composite reading for all countries and sectors came in at 53.2, the highest since last July. The only other ecostats for the Eurozone as a whole were for producer (factory gate) prices. They went up by 0.5% in February and were 1.5% Higher on the year. The Account (the expurgated minutes) of last month’s ECB policy meeting brought nothing really new to the table, though the euro did move higher following its publication.Unemployment statistics fell below 4 million after the third largest monthly drop in the history of the series. Italian unemployment increased from 9% to a provisional 10.2%. Unemployment in the Eurozone was in line with forecast and unchanged at 8.3%.

Did you take pension or investment advice since moving to Spain? By Sam Kelly DipPFS, EFA, BA (Hons) Managing Partner Chorus Financial ‘Transfer your pensions overseas!’ for apparent tax benefits that in many cases don’t exist. You’ve been tied into investment plans and unwittingly paying 2, 3 even 4 times more than you realise, and have no doubt been left scratching your heads over how you haven’t seen better returns over so many years of strong markets.

I’m sure many of you reading this will already be aware of Chorus Financial, and the essential message we have been spreading across the British communities of Spain over the last few years. From the day we opened, we have campaigned for transparency in the investment, pension and financial planning industry here in Spain – we are very proud that those campaigns have won us international awards. For too many years IFA’s have targeted our communities with socalled ‘solutions’ loaded with layer upon layer of hidden fees, inappropriate risk, and unnecessary product tie-ins. Brits have been encouraged to

We’ve even seen an alarming trend of clients being encouraged to take their pensions as ‘annuities’ for apparent tax benefits. These solutions are now resulting in Brits in our area being investigated by the Spanish authorities. While Chorus Financial have already helped hundreds of clients on the Costa Blanca avoid such practises, we are now upping our efforts to educate those living in your area, to help ensure you do not become yet another victim. In this column each week we’ll explain the structures created specifically to hide fees and commissions within popular investment and pension products offered to Brits living in Spain. We’ll discuss diversification and risk – too many times have I seen

portfolios held by people on the South Costa Blanca where the clients have been placed into a handful of investment funds, without any thought for how diversification helps reduce volatility and risk when investing. All too often these recommendations are made because the IFA is getting paid by all parties – so you agreed to pay them an initial or annual fee, but beyond that, an insurance company, or ‘bond provider’ (for example Spanish Compliant Bonds) have paid them up to 8% initial commission – that is facilitated by locking you into these products for up to 10 years, where you could be paying 4 times more than you need to. Then lastly the fund managers pay them. So rather than an IFA going into the open market and carefully selecting high quality, low-cost funds, clients are finding themselves shoe-horned into particular funds that pay commission to the adviser. Such funds can add as much as 3% per year in charges, and often the clients have no idea such fees apply.

At Chorus we make a simple promise:we are only ever paid by one party – our clients. And you only pay us specific fees we have clearly explained to you, in both monetary and percentage amounts. That means that when we select products you pay the lowest price available, and when we select funds, we do so with fees and quality at the forefront of that advice. Chorus have already been operating in Costa Blanca South for many years, and have hundreds of clients in this area, but with the opening of our new Chorus Financial Business Centre in Benijofar this summer, we look forward to seeing many more of you and offering the highest quality, most honest and transparent service in the region. If you have concerns over existing investments or pensions, or are considering a new solution, speak to a Chorus Financial adviser today. An initial consultation is free and without pressure or obligation. Call me direct on +34 664 398 702, email s.kelly@chorusfinancial.es or visit www.chorusfinancial.es for more information.

Investment contracts are intended as medium to long term investments, and all investments have some level of risk. Figures in our articles are examples of what can be achieved and cannot be guaranteed; the value of your investments can go down as well as up. Fees and charges can vary and will be fully explained to you before any advice can take place. Spain maintains Masks for sunbathing uturn vaccination drive Spain’s central Health Ministry has declared that face masks are not be obligatory at all times while on the beach, provided that citizens are bathing in the sea, playing sport or resting in a fixed spot, and that a safe distance of 1.5 meters can be maintained from other people. While this change of heart – which has been conveyed to the country’s regional governments – does not specifically mention it, this would mean no face coverings while sunbathing. The new decision comes after national legislation was published in the Official State Bulletin (BOE) last week making masks obligatory even when people are alone in open spaces, something that was widely rejected by a number of regional governments. The new plan was discussed at a meeting of the Inter-Territorial Council of the National Health System (CISNS) at the end of last week, which brought together the central Health Ministry and the regional healthcare chiefs in order to tackle the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The new text comes after Health Minister Carolina Darias told the regions that a revision and update of the regulations

would be forthcoming, but still means that people will have to wear masks while taking walks, including on the beach. But it exempts people from wearing the coverings when bathing in the sea, lakes, reservoirs, rivers or other natural aquatic spaces, as well as in swimming pools – whether indoors or outdoors. The previous text of the law stated that masks must be worn “in public, in outdoor spaces and in any enclosed space with public use or that is open to the public.” However, as soon as the law was published in the BOE, it was rejected by regional governments. The national government also quickly admitted that the guidelines in the BOE may have

been overtaken by reality and improved knowledge about the coronavirus. “Face masks are mandatory, but we have to see whether the law leaves some room for manoeuvre,” said Health Minister Carolina Darias at a previous press conference. The use of face masks in public spaces in Spain has been obligatory since May of last year, “in open-air spaces and any closed space that is for public use or that is open to the public, where it is not possible to maintain [an interpersonal] distance,” according to the BOE published at the time, when the authorities were beginning to deescalate the coronavirus measures that were in place during the initial lockdown.

Spain’s regions have managed to administer nearly 1.3 million Covid-19 vaccines between 30th March 30 and 6th April, according to the Health Ministry. That figure is similar to that of the seven previous days, when 1.25 million shots were injected, which suggests that the campaign was not slowed down by the Easter break. But this pace will not be enough to hit the central government’s targets: the current speed is equivalent to 600,000 people a week, while 1.4 million will be necessary if 70 percent of the adult population is to be vaccinated by September. The data supplied last week by the Health Ministry indicates that, to be precise, 1,284,390 doses have been administered in the last seven days, compared to 1,249,531 shots the week before. During the vaccination campaign so far, 9,021,001 doses have been injected, while 2,902,291 people have received the two shots necessary for the full protection offered by the vaccine. A further 6,118,710 people now have at least one dose, which is important given that a single shot has been shown to offer a high level of

protection from Covid-19. In the Valencian Community the health department has administered 76 percent of the vaccines it has received and has vaccinated 262,861 (as of 5th April). The number of people who have already been vaccinated shows that the regional governments are moving forward without keeping hardly any of the vaccines in reserve. After its use was briefly suspended due to fears over blood-clot cases, the OxfordAstraZeneca vaccine is once again being used in Spain. What’s more, now that it has been shown that the second dose can be delayed with no effect on the protection offered by the vaccine, Spain’s regions are opting to vaccinate as many people as possible with the first dose. The latest report from the ministry shows that more than 93 percent of the vaccines it has sent to the regions have been used. What’s more, as the campaign has progressed, differences in the rate of administration from region to region have evened out, and practically all of Spain’s

territories are administering all of the vaccines that they are receiving. The speed of the campaign is still slow, however, as Fernando Simón, the Director of the Health Ministry’s Coordination Centre for Health Alerts (CCAES), admitted. “We could absorb a lot more vaccines if we were to receive them,” the government’s chief epidemiologist said. He cited the country’s flu shot campaign, during which as many as 14 million people were vaccinated in seven weeks “without making a major effort.” In fact, that rate of two million doses a week has still not been reached with the Covid-19 vaccines. The aim now is to roll out the immunisation process to groups of younger people, who are easier to assemble at massvaccination sites and have fewer risks. What’s more, the Janssen vaccine – which has been approved by the European authorities for use but is not yet being administered in Spain – requires just one shot and does not need to be stored at extremely low temperatures. The use of this medication will help to speed up the process.

office cyber attack Between 80,000 and 150,000 people will suffer delays this month in the collection of unemployment benefits, according to unions. Those impacted are unemployed people who applied for benefits at the SEPE (unemployment) offices during the four days in which the cyber attack on SEPE left it completely inoperative. The Ministry of Labour claims however that "the cyber attack has not caused delays, that the payroll files have been sent to the banks and that the payment windows are maintained as before." Manuel Galdeano, national coordinator of union Csif disagrees, claiming that unlike what the Minister of Labour, Yolanda Díaz, and the Secretary of State for Employment, Joaquín Pérez Rey, have been saying, "from Csif we found that

between 80,000 and 90,000 unemployed are going to see their benefits payment delayed.” Galdeano also claims that these delays are not just a result of the cyber attack in early March, but also as a consequence of a backlog at SEPE due to the pandemic. Estimates from union CCOO are higher, with representatives claiming that delays are impacting up to 150,000 people. In terms of the emergency plan launched by SEPE in the aftermath of the cyber attack, CCOO says that the issue has not been resolved. SEPE offered voluntary overtime to workers on two Saturdays in order to deal with some of the backlog but according to CCOO fewer than ten members of staff opted for the extra work.

Fire at abandoned warehouse in Almoradí On Wednesday, around 8.21 pm, firefighters received reports of plumes of smoke coming out of an abandoned industrial warehouse on Avenida Orihuela in Almoradí. A number of units from Orihuela and Almoradí fire stations were dispatched to the scene, fully equipped to tackle the blaze. Fire crews worked on the warehouse for over an hour and were able to bring it under control shortly after 9.30pm.

This Week´s Movie Picks I, Tonya Suicide Squad Saturday 17th April – ITV2, 10.00 pm

Sunday 18th April – BBC2, 11.00 pm

It feels good to be bad...Assemble a team of the world's most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government's disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren't picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it's every man for himself?

From the proverbial wrong side of the tracks in Portland, Oregon, former competitive figure skater Tonya Harding was never fully accepted in the figure skating community for not inherently being the image of grace, breeding and privilege that the community wanted to portray, despite she being naturally gifted in the sport athletically. Despite ultimately garnering some success in figure skating being national champion, a world championship medalist, an Olympian, and being the first American woman to complete a Triple Axel in competition, she is arguably best known for her association to "the incident": the leg bashing on January 6, 1994 of her competitor, Nancy Kerrigan, who, unlike Tonya, was everything that the figure skating community wanted in their representatives. Her association to that incident led to Tonya being banned from competitive figure skating for life. Tonya's story from the beginning of her figure skating life at age four to the aftermath of the incident is presented.

First pandemic year leaves 401,000 unemployed

Rojales Local Police stop four illegal parties The Local Police of Rojales had to stop four illegal parties in the urbanisations of Doña Pepa and Ciudad Quesada over the Easter weekend. The gatherings breached the Decree of Measures of the Consell to fight COVID19. In two of the parties it was the neighbours who alerted the police and with the other two it

A little more than a year ago, the Spanish labour market suffered an unprecedented blow from the coronavirus pandemic. The number of contributors to the Social Security system – which is considered a measure of job creation – started to fall days before the Spanish government declared a state of alarm to control the spread of the pandemic. Under this emergency measure, public-facing businesses were closed and all Spaniards were ordered to remain at home. By the end of the month, nearly 900,000 people had lost their job as a result of the lockdown. The number of Social Security affiliations fell even further in February, when they hit their lowest point. From that moment on, employment figures began to recover but more than one year later have still not returned to pre-

pandemic levels. According to new data released by the Labour and Social Security ministries, there are nearly 440,000 fewer contributors to the Social Security system than there were in midMarch, when the 18.9 million were recorded. Meanwhile, unemployment has also risen during the pandemic. In the last year, 401,328 people have lost their jobs. In March of this year, the number of jobless claims fell by 60,000, pushing the total number of people registered as unemployed below the four-million mark. However, the job market figures from the pandemic should be considered with caution, given the central government’s efforts to mitigate the economic fallout of the coronavirus crisis with public aid, such as the ERTE employment retention scheme and subsidies to self-employed

workers. The furlough scheme, which allows companies to temporarily send workers home or reduce their working hours, but forces them to take them back after a certain amount of time, has prevented the massive job losses seen in other crises. Unlike other recessions, such as the 2008 financial crisis, employment figures have seen a smaller fall than the drop in gross domestic product (GDP) – largely thanks to the ERTE furlough scheme. According to the latest data, the number of furloughed workers reached 743,628 at the end of March this year. “With respect to the worst moment of the [coronavirus] crisis, in April 2020, the number of furloughed workers has fallen 2.9 million, according to the date of registration,” the Social Security Ministry explained in a press release.

was the Police who spotted the get togethers. In addition, the Local Police in that are raised a total of 29 sanctions against Covid measures during the holidays – sending a strong message that regulations must be adhered to. The Mayor of Rojales, Antonio

Pérez, has highlighted the good behaviour, in general, of the majority of the residents of Rojales in terms of respecting the prevention measures of COVID19. The Mayor has reported that, at this time, the municipality has two people with coronavirus detected during the week of 29th March to 4th April, according to data provided by Public Health.

Robbers arrested The National Police have arrested six members of a criminal organisation dedicated to carrying out robberies with force in well-known restaurants, of which two were well-known fast food franchises located in various towns in the province, including Orihuela Costa. The modus operandi used in all of them was the same; the robbers used blunt tools with which they forced the door of the warehouse or storeroom and stole, among other items, oil in industrial quantities that they later resold to third parties. The members of this organisation not only stole the oil from these restaurants, but also took it from recycling sites to later resell it to individuals and businesses. Officers from the Investigation

Group of the Northern District Police Station of Alicante initiated an investigation following several complaints that led to the identification of all the members of the organisation, who were living in the town of Villajollosa. The agents carried out extensive surveillance that resulted in the arrest of six people who have been charged so far with seven robberies committed in Orihuela

Costa, Alicante, Denia and Gandía. In the searches carried out, two vehicles were seized, which were those used by the criminal network to commit the restaurant robberies. Four of the six detained are of Spanish nationality, aged between 30 and 48 years old, all were placed at the disposal of the Investigative Court of Villajoyosa.

Freemasons support This is the suitcase we’ll all need when we’re allowed travel again 'Help at Home' The Worshipful Master of local Freemason’s Lodge, Las Salinas, Keith Carter presented a much needed hospital style bed to “Help at Home” General Secretary Susie Brice on Wednesday 31st March at their premises in Cabo Roig. President Patricia Muirhead thanked the Freemasons most sincerely for their support, adding that the new bed would be put to good use right away. “Help at Home” is a registered charity that offers short term support and assistance for people of all ages in their own homes. Voluntary services include transport to medical centres, respite care, shopping, companionship, advice on social services and welfare benefits, legal matters, and translation. Housekeeping services can be arranged at a cost of fifteen-twenty euros per hour, and can include assistance with personal needs and meal preparation if desired. “Help at Home” has an office and furniture shop at Cabo Roig, and a charity shop at Playa Flamenca and Quesada.

Fans of Lidl will be delighted with the supermarket’s new travel range, especially this smart suitcase that costs less than €35. The smart aspect is thanks to the OKOBAN® identification system that serves to identify lost luggage faster. Frequent flyers will never lose luggage again with the system, created by Travel Sentry - the global Lost and Found system used by millions of people in 198 countries around the world. Further details can be found at www.helpathomecb.com Volunteers can be contacted by email: helpathomequesada@gmail.com or telephone: 711039558. Picture Foreground: Worshipful Master Keith Carter, and General Secretary Susie Brice. Picture Background: President Patricia Muirhead, Welfare Officer Sheila Powell and Shop Volunteer Lynette Johnson.

It consists of an UID (unique identification code), which once registered (this can be done in just a few minutes) creates a logged link between the suitcase and the owner. In the event that the luggage is found waiting on a carousel or simply abandoned at arrivals, one of more than 2,800 Lost Property offices at airports worldwide will enter the UID code,

which will issue a signal by SMS or email to the owner, telling them where their bag has been located and how to retrieve it. The smart suitcase is priced at €34.99 and is only available online at www.lidl.es. Its capacity is 30 litres and the case itself is very light. It has very robust outer covers, a 5-position telescopic handle with a locking button and four multidirectional wheels for ease of manoeuvrability. This Lidl suitcase measures 40 cm long, 20 cm deep and 55 cm wide, thus complying with most carry-on regulations of almost all airlines. Inside it has two zippers, 2 elastic cross straps and 2 zippered mesh compartments. And it also includes a separate bag for shoes or dirty clothes. And in terms of security, apart from the OKOBAN system, it also has a padlock with a numerical combination.

Weird food facts... It's often said that fact is stranger than fiction and that certainly applies to some of the weird and wonderful things you’ll find out about food and eating when you dig a little deeper. Indeed, some of these tasty trivia seem so strange you’ll wonder if they’re true.... Almonds have twice as much calcium as milk Gram for gram this is absolutely true – 100g of almonds have 240mg of bonebuilding calcium, while semi-skimmed (2%) milk has 120mg per 100g. That said, we tend to drink milk in bigger quantities than we eat almonds (and the calcium from milk is easily absorbed), so the dairy option is a better source day-to-day. Chocolate really doesn’t give you spots Acne is caused by the production of hormones, and the effect these have on the sebaceous glands, not so much by what you eat. A generally unbalanced diet might exacerbate the condition, and excess dairy and refined carbs might play a role, but this remains unproven. There’s certainly no evidence specifically linking chocolate with spots. Darker drinks come with more of a hangover Drinks with high levels of congeners – flavouring agents and other chemicals – can worsen a hangover. Generally, the paler the drink, the smaller the congener content, so vodka is a lot less likely to

cause a hangover than a dark rum for example. Vegans narrowly missed being called “benevores” The term vegan was coined in November 1944, when a group of nondairy vegetarians got together to discuss non-dairy vegetarian diets and lifestyles. This group – which grew into the Vegan Society in the UK – toyed with the names "dairyban", "vitan" and "benevore", before settling on vegan, which contains the first three and last two letters of vegetarian. Your hay fever symptoms can predict food allergies People with allergies to grasses may have a reaction to peaches, celery, tomatoes, melons and oranges. If

you're allergic to birch tree pollen (your hay fever kicks in earlier in the season), watch out for reactions to pitted fruits like nectarines and apricots as well as peanuts. Eating cholesterol-rich foods doesn’t raise your blood cholesterol Unless you have some unlucky genes, this holds. Foods such as prawns and eggs are rich in cholesterol, but when you eat them your internal production of cholesterol goes down in response, so your blood cholesterol levels don’t get raised, or only get raised minimally. It's saturated fat that’s of concern when it comes to high blood cholesterol. Tea bags were an accident According to the Tea and Infusions Association, Thomas Sullivan, a New York tea merchant, started to send samples of tea to his customers in small silken bags in around 1908 – and rather than empty out the

contents, people assumed the entire bag should be put in the pot. It was through this mistake that the tea bag was born. You can hear rhubarb grow A method called "rhubarb forcing" involves putting rhubarb in a dark shed, tricking it into thinking that it's spring. This will cause the rhubarb to grow at a massively fast pace. So fast, in fact, you can hear the rhubarb popping as it grows.

Cheese is the most stolen food in the world After surveying nearly 1,200 retailers representing 250,000 retail outlets all across the world, the UK’s Centre for Retail Research discovered that the most stolen food is none other than a block of cheese.

Only some countries sell eggs refrigerated The Americans, Australians and Japanese all wash and sanitise eggs. That means they also have to oil and then refrigerate them, as washing removes the natural protective barrier on the eggs that prevents bacteria entering. In the UK, and across the EU, it’s the law not to wash grade A eggs. This keeps the natural protection in place so they can be sold from the shelf and not the chiller cabinet. Bananas are radioactive Bananas are rich in potassium, a mineral that balances water levels in the body as well as keeping blood pressure healthy. But a small proportion of that potassium is the unstable radioactive form, which you are swallowing alongside the regular potassium every time you eat the fruit. Other fruit and vegetables rich in potassium will also be a teeny bit radioactive in the same way. Thankfully it's next to impossible to get a significant dose of radiation from eating fruits and veggies.

Live longer with We’ve all been two dietary tweaks drinking tea wrong Living a long and healthy life has never been more achievable thanks to advances in science and medicine. Perhaps the greatest revelation to come out of these fields is the ease at which people can boost their lifespan. The answer invariably lies in the food we eat and research continues to show how simple improvements can have an outsized impact. This is the guiding principle behind Human Health by The Clinic, an independent clinic founded by Dr Mayoni Gooneratne. "We aim to encourage patients to start slowly to change the direction of the trajectory of their health journey," she explained. "Implementing small regular changes that then become habits are far more achievable than suddenly deciding to become a triathlete and with better health benefits for most individuals." Dr Gooneratne pointed to two key dietary principles that can have a profound impact on your lifespan. The first tip Dr Gooneratne advised to boost longevity is reduce your sugar

intake. She explained: "Reducing sugar intake will reduce the inflammatory effect that refined sugar has on all our cells. This single behaviour will begin to reduce the risks of chronic disease." One of the primary benefits of reducing your sugar intake is that it helps to keep obesity at bay. Dr Gooneratne cited a review published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) that illustrates the dangers of added sugars in particular. Added sugars are defined as sugars that are added to foods during food processing, manufacturing, or preparation. "Most health authorities agree that overconsumption of added sugars, and particularly sugar sweetened drinks, has contributed to the obesity epidemic," the study researchers noted. In meta-analyses of trials in adults consuming unrestricted diets, reduced intake of added sugars was associated with a modest decrease in body weight, while higher intake is associated with a comparable gain. According to Dr Gooneratne,

the other key tip (which is linked to the first) for boosting longevity is to cook from scratch. "Eating ultra-processed foods has been shown to result in weight gain with all of its associated medical issues," warned Dr Gooneratne. "Also there are huge health gains associated with eating homemade fermented foods such as Kombucha and Kimchi." Fermentation describes a chemical change brought about using microorganisms. Kombucha is a fermented tea and kimchi is a fermented vegetable. The benefits of consuming these fermented products include a reduced risk of heart disease, research suggests. According to a rat study published in the journal Springer Nature, kombucha greatly improved two markers of heart disease: "bad" LDL and "good" HDL cholesterol, in as few as 30 days. Bad cholesterol clings to the inside of your artery walls, hiking your risk of heart disease. Good cholesterol counters this harmful process by picking it up and transporting to the liver where it is flushed out.

This Morning presenter Ruth Langsford has explained hat according to experts we have all been making our favourite cuppa wrong. Apparently, putting the milk in to tea first is more flavoursome, according to science. She said: "The proteins in the milk lock in the taste of the tea." Although this new way of drinking the nation's favourite drink was popular amongst some people, Ruth shared how she couldn't think of anything more horrible. She added: "I couldn't think of anything more horrible than putting milk on top of a cold tea bag and then adding the water. "I always do tea, hot water and then the milk." Vanessa Feltz also appeared as a guest on the show and revealed that putting milk in first was "absolutely horrible". She said: "Well I've tried it, it's absolutely horrible and the idea of pouring cold milk on a horrible tea bag and then the whole thing sogging up before you put the boiling water on it is absolutely revolting." Nick Ferrari agreed with Vanessa, Eammon and Ruth sharing how the milk must go in

last. Twitter users also took to the social media site to share their thoughts on the tea debate. One person said: "It's tea bag, hot water, wait one minute and then milk." Another wrote: "Nothing like a proper cup of tea brewed in a teapot, drunk from a china cup with a dash of milk splashed in at the end." According to science, the sudden change in temperature from pouring milk into hot water causes the proteins to unfurl and clump together. To avoid this, experts recommend placing a tea bag in your mug and adding your desired milk first. After, add the hot water and stir before adding sugar if needed.

This of course is only if you have milk in your cuppa, some This Morning users shared their "disgust". One person said: "What am I seeing before my eyes? #ThisMorning making a cup of tea with milk, I look at that in disgust. Always black, tastes better and it's healthier." Another agreed and said: "I totally agree with the science behind it, although I'm not too sure I can taste the difference." Eamonn joked and explained that the only complaint he had about Ruth's method of making tea was the temperature. He said that he hates it when the drink is too hot that he has to "slurp" the mug so it doesn't burn his mouth.

Chronic pain sufferers should take exercise, not painkillers Patients suffering from chronic pain that has no known cause should not be prescribed painkillers, the medicines watchdog announced this week. The recommendation instead is that these patients be prescribed exercise, talking therapies and acupuncture as an alternative. UK health watchdog NICE (The National Institute for health and Care Excellence) categorises chronic primary pain as “pain with no clear underlying cause, or pain (or its impact) that is out of proportion to any observable injury or disease.” The new advice heralds a major change in pain management policy in the UK, with NICE saying that in the future, doctors should advise chronic pain sufferers to use physical and psychological therapies rather than analgesics to manage their pain. The new recommendation has the potential to impact the way many hundreds of thousands of people in England and Wales tackle their condition with between 1% and 6% of the population of England estimated to suffer from chronic primary pain. Pain that can be attributed to a known underlying health issue such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis or endometriosis is known as chronic secondary pain whereas pain with no identified cause that has persisted for a period of at least three months is termed chronic primary pain. The new guidelines claim there is “little or no evidence” that treating the

condition with painkillers makes any difference to the person’s quality of life, or the pain they suffer or their psychological distress. Doctors are now urged to draw up a care and support plan alongside patients in order to set out how a patient can manage their pain based on how it impacts their daily life and what activities they feel they can undertake. NICE also

calls for honesty between doctors and patients “about the uncertainty of the prognosis”. The plan should include “interventions that have been shown to be effective in managing chronic primary pain. These include exercise programmes and the psychological treatments cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). “Acupuncture is also recommended as an option, provided it is delivered within certain clearly defined parameters,” Nice says. The antidepressants amitriptyline, citalopram, duloxetine, fluoxetine, paroxetine or sertraline can also be used,

it adds. Sufferers should not be started on commonly used medications such as paracetamol, non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs, benzodiazepines or opioids, which pose additional risks including addiction, the watchdog says. Dr Paul Chrisp, director of Nice’s centre for guidelines, said: “Based on the evidence, for most people it’s unlikely that any drug treatments for chronic primary pain, other than antidepressants, provide an adequate balance between any benefits they might provide and the risks associated with them.” The Royal College of GPs backed the move away from painkillers but warned that patient access to the new forms of treatment being recommended was variable, saying “access to these therapies can be patchy at a community level across the country, so this needs to be addressed urgently, if these new guidelines are to make a genuine difference to the lives of our patients with primary chronic pain.” Lucy Ryan, a patient representative who helped NICE draw up the new guidelines, welcomed the acknowledgement of the risks that the administration of tablets for chronic primary pain can involve because often, she claims, patients are sometimes not informed about added dangers. “Everyone with chronic pain experiences pain differently, so I feel the more options available to help people effectively manage their pain, the better,” she added.

Best athome workouts On any ‘normal’ year, mustering up the motivation to not only make a fitnessfocused resolution, but also following through on that plan, can be challenging enough. Throw in a pandemic and rampant gym closures for the better part of 2020 (and now well into 2021), and that goal can feel downright impossible. Weight loss is complicated, and it takes much more than just adding a few more steps or workouts to your routine. The most significant factor in your ability to lose weight is maintaining a calorie deficit, which, you guessed it, stems mostly how much food you're eating. To burn 100 calories, you might need to walk for 45 minutes. To consume 100 calories, all you need is a few spoons of ice cream!

Below are expert approved home workouts, all you need to do to search Google, Playstore, Tik Tok or YouTube and everything you need is at your fingers tips...absolutely free. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) While exercise alone won't cause you to lose weight, if there's one workout that can give you a slightly sharper edge than others, it's HIIT: alternating between short, intense bursts of energy with less intense (or completely restful) periods in between. Any time you're doing a hard burst of activity with a shorter recovery, your heart rate and temperature go way up and these two physiological changes have a direct impact on your metabolism.

As your body works to bring those two variables back down (or achieve homeostasis) for the next few hours, you're still burning calories. And the best part of all? No equipment (or abundance of space) is required, making it a perfect at-home workout. Strength training Weight training won't burn a ton of calories in the moment, but it will help to increase your muscle mass - which can affect your resting metabolic rate, or how many calories your body is able to burn at rest. And the more calories you burn at rest, the easier it can be to maintain (or potentially lose) weight. And although you do need weight (or resistance) to strength train, it certainly doesn't need to be in the form of dumbbells. Anything that has mass (including your own body, for bodyweight exercises) can be used to build muscle. It's the muscle fatigue, rather than actual weighted equipment, that determines if you grow stronger. As long as you take whatever exercise you're doing to a point where you're fatiguing your muscles, you will see strength gains.

I am being used I have a friend of 25 years. She has always been very popular, and I am sure all of her girlfriends think they are her best friend. As I’ve got older, I can see that although very charming, she really doesn’t put much into relationships, unless it suits her. She’ll suggest going out but only to places she wants to go. If I arrange something and she considers it boring, she will cancel and suggest doing something else. If you get invited to her place, she has often invited other people, and I would also find she would bring others along when I had arranged a day out, often talking to them more than me. Because of this, I cooled the relationship and I didn’t see her for 7 years, although I sent Christmas cards. But when she heard we were moving to Spain she got back in touch, and I noticed she was making a big effort with our friendship. She invited herself to stay, and after her first visit to Spain, I discovered she intended to come a further four times in that year, which I called off. It was hard because I felt like I was being unkind, but I felt I was being used again. I think she took offence and went off radar for a bit, but now she has popped up saying now that she misses our friendship. If I am honest, I don’t want her in my life again. Friendships are a two-way street. I am afraid it does look like she has been using you. I also think this is how she treats her other ‘friends’. I don’t consider anything will change if you welcome her back into your life. Personally, I don’t think Leopards can change their spots. If you let her in again, it might not be long before she is asking to come for a free holiday. Best just keep to Christmas cards. WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. A PSEUDONYM WILL BE USED IF YOU WISH. SARA READS ALL LETTERS AND CAN GIVE A PERSONAL REPLY. EMAIL YOUR QUESTION TO SARA@COSTABLANCAPEOPLE.COM OR SARA IS AVAILABLE FOR PRIVATE CONSULTATIONS, TELEPHONE 650 054 467.

What this means: So long as you're feeling a burn from a biceps curl with a full wine bottle, or performing reverse lunges with your own bodyweight, you're working to strengthen your muscles and potentially increase their mass. Flagons of water, bottles of pop or tins of beans can replace kettlebells or dumbbells while doing front squats. Pick an object - be it flagons or water or a suitcase filled with books - that will fatigue you in 12 to 15 reps. Dance Dancing - be it in the form of ballroom dancing or trendy TikTok dances - has the potential to contribute to weight loss. That's because it's a form of aerobic exercise which can support weight management. It can also increase joint mobility and spinal flexibility, key factors in preventing injury (and ensuring you are limber enough to execute living room burpees and jump squats with confidence). But perhaps the most critical benefit of all - especially right now? Dancing is

straight-up fun. Dancing has an emotional, energising component that can't be beat. But it's a super-effective way to burn calories, too, often without you even knowing you're doing it. Experts that track their cardiovascular workouts using heart rate monitors frequently find that dancing will produce the highest heart rate - something they credit to the joy people feel while doing it. Yoga As anyone who's taken a vinyasa or Bikram yoga class will tell you, it's entirely possible to get your heart rate soaring during flows - especially when the room is heated. While a direct tie between yoga and weight loss is pretty murky, it might help you execute other exercises that do maximise calorie burns (HIIT, strength training, and dance) with more efficiency. Any kind of strengthening and stretching is beneficial for weight loss because it will make your body stronger and more limber. This makes it possible to tackle your cardio and weight sessions with more intensity.

New Speed Limits in May At the end of 2020, the DGT published a broad reform of the Traffic Law that aimed to improve the road safety on national highways. A series of changes that were approved shortly after, but are gradually coming into effect. This will happen with one of the most profound changes: these are the three new speed limits that come into force on May 11. That will be the official date on which the landscape of many cities will change, especially those that, for now, have not lowered the limits of their streets. And it is that the General Directorate of Traffic has wanted some margin so that the different localities adapt their signage and we all have time to adapt and know the new regulations. Until now, the generic speed limit in cities was set at 50 kilometres per hour. As of May 11, this figure will be reserved for high-capacity roads that have two or more lanes for each direction, such as the CV-905 in Torrevieja which saw the speed limit reduced not too long ago. With the aim of eradicating

mortality in urban accidents and avoiding both accidents and their consequences, two new limitations will arrive: 30 kilometres per hour and 20 kilometres per hour, depending on the street.

platform roads, that is, those streets in which the sidewalk and the road are unified and, therefore, pedestrians and vehicles share space although the preference is always of the first. Sanctions The penalties, consequently, will also change: driving over the speed limit will be considered a serious offence that will be punished with a fine of 100 euro without loss of points on the driving licence. Driving at excessive speed will result in higher fines and the loss of points.

30 kilometres per hour This is the limit chosen for roads that have a single lane in each direction, which is already being applied in many Spanish cities. It should be noted that the areas reserved for certain vehicles or users (such as those for public transport) are not counted. 20 kilometres per hour This new limit will be the one that regulates traffic on single-

Adapting limits Finally, it must be borne in mind that the town councils will have the power to reduce these new generic speeds if they consider it necessary and provided that, previously, they install the signage that announces a different limit. To this must be added that, in some exceptional cases, the speed may be increased up to 50 kilometres per hour on roads with a single lane in each direction.

April 15 is the Day of the Cyclist Global semiconductor Although the origins of this day are somewhat historically disturbing (revolving around the creation and transport of hallucinogenic substances during the Second World War), and not to be confused with World Cycling Day (also known as WCD is held annually on the 17th of September internationally), it is a good day to remind ourselves of the need for vigilance, respect and responsibility surrounding some of the most vulnerable road users, cyclists. Drivers should always remember to give plenty of room for cyclists, indeed a minimum separation of 1.5 metres is always required when overtaking. When overtaking cyclists you are permitted to cross the lateral solid white lines, so long as no vehicles are approaching in the opposite direction. If they are, keep well back until clearance can be ensured. Cyclists can help themselves by remembering that when you are riding a bike you are in control of a vehicle, and as such are governed by all the same traffic laws as other road users. You cannot ride the wrong way down a one-way street, ride through red lights, consume alcohol above the permitted limits, or drugs, etc. You too must also respect other road users by only riding at a maximum of two abreast, moving to single file if traffic is wanting to pass, not riding on pavements unless permitted, and in that case giving pedestrians a similar wide berth.

Wearing a reflective vest is mandatory during times of poor visibility, and it is advisable at all times. When a cycle is on the road, it is a vehicle just like any other, and the rider must abide by the same laws, including the maximum permitted alcohol level of 0.5 grams per litre in blood or 0.25 milligrams per litre in expelled air. At pedestrian crossings, you must get off the bike to cross. Cyclists are not

permitted to ride across pedestrian crossings any more than a car can. It is also important to remember that the pavement is for pedestrians, unless cycles are expressly permitted. Using headphones or a mobile phone is expressly forbidden when driving a car, but the same also applies when riding a bicycle, the same rules apply remember. We have also compiled a list of another ten of the most popular mistakes that can result in infractions, all punishable by a fine, and here in no particular order: When a circular sign notifies cyclists of the presence of a cycle lane, it is

mandatory for cycles to use it, not the main carriageway of the road. The only exception being for high-powered racing bikes outside the city. Bicycles must have both front and rear brakes, and both must be working. As mentioned, the use of headphones connected to music players or other devices is prohibited. You must signal your intention to manoeuvre, and wear a helmet. In the city it is mandatory for children under 16 and it is compulsory for everyone on the roads outside city limits. Any manoeuvre must be signalled in advance and performed in sufficient space. On roundabouts, cyclists in a group have priority when on the roundabout, provided that the lead cyclist has already entered the roundabout. Lights at the front and rear are mandatory. When on a one-way street, cyclists must always flow in the direction of the traffic. A bell is mandatory on a bicycle. In areas where cycling is permitted, pedestrians must be given adequate space and clearance. The roads are shared environments where all vehicles (including bicycles which are a vehicle as we have reminded once again) have equal rights to be present. We must respect that and act accordingly. Space, patience, and courtesy are the most important traits of good driving attitude.

shortage impacts motor production As the worldwide shortage of semiconductors worsens, consumers are facing rising prices and shortages of products such as games consoles, cars, TVs and smartphones. The shortage is hugely impacting the motors industry with announcements this week from Ford and General Motors that several factories in the US will halt production due to the issue. The shortage of these essential chips - the "smart" element within every electronic device - has been gradually worsening since last year. At the outset, the issue was a temporary delay in supplies as manufacturing plants shut down when the Covid-19 pandemic first hit. Despite production now being back to normal levels, a surge in demand fuelled by the effects of the pandemic has pushed the problem to crisis point. The rise in demand has been driven by increased investment in electric vehicles by carmakers as well as a boom in sales of computers and TVs, the launch of 5G-enabled smartphones and new games consoles. Cars use dozens of semiconductors to control air bags, windows and other parts. “We continue to work closely with our supply base to find solutions for our suppliers’ semiconductor requirements and to mitigate impact on GM,” GM spokesman David Barnas

said. “Our intent is to make up as much production lost at these plants as possible.” The pandemic-related chip shortage has hit nearly every major automaker, leading to production cutbacks worldwide that have also affected Toyota, Volkswagen, Honda and others. Chinese electric-vehicle maker Nio also temporarily halted production in March. Ford said profits could be hit by as much as $2.5 billion this year as a result of the shortages. Nissan has also begun slowing production at plants in the US and Mexico, and General Motors has said it could also be facing a drop in profits by as much as $2 billion. The global auto industry will produce 1.5 million to 5 million fewer vehicles this year than originally planned because of the supply constraints. There is no quick solution to the issue, despite pressure from major governments and businesses to ramp up production. Chip factories cost billions to build or expand, so there is no simple way to quickly boost production. The complexity of auto supply chains is also not helping the problem. GM alone buys auto parts from roughly 250 suppliers that in turn buy chips from 11 different semiconductor makers.

Car dependency increasing despite lockdown The Covid-19 pandemic, as well as having had a dramatic impact on car usage, is also reinforcing the bond between drivers and their cars, new RAC research reveals. Worldwide lockdown restrictions first imposed in March unsurprisingly led to a marked decline in traffic levels. But the 2020 Report on Motoring has found that motorists are now more reliant on their vehicles than in the past – largely due to concerns about the safety of public transport and a lack of adequate alternatives. Almost half (49%) of the UK’s 40 million drivers report that their vehicle usage has declined in the past 12 months – by way of comparison, only 21% of motorists said their usage had fallen in 2019. Three-quarters (75%) of those say that Covid-19 is the main reason that they are driving less, with a further 18% citing the pandemic as a contributory factor. But interestingly, a third are using their vehicles just as much as last year and 17% are using them more. Clearly, the rise in the number of people who started working from home rather than commuting to an office or other workplace since March played a

significant role in the drop in car use. But the figures suggest that the switch to homeworking could, in a limited number of cases, become permanent: while 67% say they typically travelled to and from work by car pre-Covid-19, 64% expect to do so in the future. At the same time, while 18% of car owners said they normally worked from home prior to the pandemic, 24% expect to do so even as we emerge from the crisis. And more than a third (36%) of motorists believe they will work from home more frequently – even if not all the time – in the post-pandemic world. Nonetheless, for many motorists, working from home is not an option – which could help explain why car use levels are unchanged for a third of them (33%). It should also be noted that the Report on Motoring research was carried out before the re-opening of schools in September – a development that is likely to have led to a rise in vehicle use for many families. Only 31% of motorists say they have become more dependent on their cars in the past 12 months compared with 35% in 2019 – a figure that should not

come as a surprise given this year’s movement restrictions. But despite this decrease in dependency, drivers say that having access to a vehicle has become crucial: 57% of motorists say that having access to a car is more important given the pandemic than in it was before. To underpin this finding, the majority of motorists (52%) say they will use public transport less in future as a result of the pandemic – and the potential for tightly packed buses and train carriages to increase the spread of infection. Meanwhile, for the first time since 2002 fewer than half of drivers (43%) say they would use their cars less if public transport was improved – down sharply from 57% in 2019. While drivers were asked to consider their use of public transport in non-pandemic times, the coronavirus has likely had a significant impact on how drivers answered. Nonetheless, taken at face value, the declining appeal of public transport seemingly represents a seismic shift compared to recent years, and suggests drivers are more wedded to their cars than they have been for a long time.

Elche CF, Relegation Realisation Abbey Anglers On Tuesday the 6th of Aprilwe once again visited the El Bosquet Complex at Crevillente. The Weather forecast was for warm and sunny conditions and this was in fact the case, with temperatures reaching 30 degrees in the sun but a freshening breeze made conditions difficult in the second half of the match. Twenty two anglers competed and we fished the pegs a1 to 7 and 26 to 40 made up of 7 separate sections. Winner on the day after a welcome return to form was yours truly Ian Brown. Draw on peg 1 on the new section I fished maggot across just off the bottom to take a steady stream of large mullet, carp and barbel for 19.26kg. Second was Barry Homer. Drawn on the favoured peg 26 for the second week running he also fished maggot on the pole across for 18.46kg. Third was Neil McBernie who after a very slow start caught carp late on for 16.96kg from peg 7. The pairs competition was won by Terry Brindley and John Waples with 23.88 kg. Other section winners

included, Terry´´MrPastry¨´Brindley 13.58kg `peg 40, Tony´´One arm¨ Mcmillan with 8.28kg from peg 37, Richard¨Veterano¨King with 7.56kg from peg 30 and Richard¨Im not laughing¨Smith with 8.50kg from peg 2. If anyone is interested in

joining the club, please visit our website www.abbeyangling.es for further details. We are a very friendly club with some talented anglers and everyone is welcome. Rods N Reels The following day Rods N Reels fished the same venue and pegs . This time the weather forecast was not in our favour and high winds made fishing the pole on some of the

pegs impossible. The match anglers get some bad comments regarding us fishing this venue but only one other fisherman was fishing the complex. Neil McBernie showed why he is without doubt the best angler on this complex. Draw on peg 40, which was at times shielded from the wind, he caught nine barbel and a load of carp for a fantastic weight of 38.62kg. He fished the pole shallow with pellets to his right on this peg. Second on the day was Richard´´Tricky´´ Wood. Drawn on peg 26 he fished the method feeder with wafters and late on the pole down the edge with paste for 23.22kg. In third place was Bill Reade from Peg 4. He fished across with maggot for 13.10kg. Other section winners were Richard Smith, peg B1 with 12.76kg and Mike´´TheGooner´´Hill with 11.08kg from peg 5. Overall the complex fished reasonably well with lots of decent weights. The pairs competition was won by Neil and Terry Screen with 45kg. Tight lines. Ian Brown

On Friday evening Elche CF faced a 6 pointer fight against Huesca. Elche occupied the place just above the relegation zone, whilst Huesca was at the top of the zone. The match was further complicated as Huesca had employed the ex Elche manager, Pacheta, who coached Elche CF to their miraculous elevation to La Liga during the 2019/20 season. As the saying goes, when the referee blows his whistle there are no friends. This was certainly true of Pacheta, he gave Elche no special favours, although one of his players did score an own goal. The play was frenetic. Huesca scored after just 3 minutes. Rafa Mir number 11, on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers deftly headed the ball into the Elche goal to become Huesca's top La Liga scorer. In the very next minute, on the very next run of play, the scoreline returned to an equilibrium. Barragán crossed the ball in front of goal and Vavro, the 25 year old Slovak, tapped it into his own goal. Then followed a string of events which ended

with a penalty decision in favour of Huesca. This was questioned as further up the string Huesca had committed a foul. VAR was rewound and consulted and the penalty was annulled. In a rare micro error of judgement, Badia let in the second goal on the 30th minute. The ball bounced a few meters before his line and Badia's hands raised just nano seconds too slowly as the ball brushed the top finger seams of his gloves. The second half was more pedestrian, neither side worrying the other. The final goal came from the second penalty of the match, again generated by Mojica, the 28 year old Columbian defender. Rafa Mir stepped up to take and convert it, scoring his 12th goal in the La

Liga and his second of the match. The 3-1 score sent Elche CF down into the relegation zone, a position that neither the manager, players or fans want to occupy for long! With 26 points, Elche is facing a rough relegation rumble, as only 3 points separate them from bottom placed Eibar. On Sunday the 18th at 14:00 18th placed Elche CF will play 14th placed Osasuna. As soon as spectators are allowed back into the stadiums, EuroTourGuide will once again be offering Coach Tours with Match Tickets to support Elche CF. CD Montesinos v CD Benijofar Team: 13 Carlos, 5 Manu, 9 Manu Sanchez, 10 Alfredo, 11 Kevin, 14 Pamies, 16 Dami, 18 Luis, 20 Damian, 22 Toni, 24 Gocu. Subs:- 1 Tomi, 3 Fernando, 6 Adrian, 8 German, 12 Barroso, 21 Paco, 23 Maccan. Saturday 10th April was the local derby game and could be called the game of the Titans with Benijofar 3rd in group 10 of the Valencian Primera Regional football league, with 16 points and Monte 6th, with 14 points, and what a game it was with end to end football from both teams with Monte perhaps taking the final edge with a 2-1 win. For those of us who were allowed to see the game behind closed doors there was some trepidation after last week’s terrible game, and playing a local derby team that came to us with great credentials, we were not expecting great things. But we were led to believe that Purito, our new manager, had read the riot act and the team had had some great training during the week, so….. Within minutes of kick-off, it was obvious that we were in for a great game with Monte off like a bat out of hell and getting a corner within 5 minutes of the start. Then after 3 minutes of attacking football there was a great goal from our new striker, Toni, following a long pass from Damian to Manu Sanchez who quickly passed to Toni, who slotted it into the net. 1-0 to Monte. The game continued with end to end play by both teams, with Benijofar getting their first corner on 22 minutes, which Monte promptly despatched away. 3 minutes later Manu Sanchez misses a great chance

by heading a ball straight into the goalie's hands with plenty of room either side to score! The game continued to go both ways and on 34 minutes the 1st yellow was given to a Benijofar player. Then on 41 minutes Alfredo missed a great chance to go 2 up. Half Time 1-0. But it was still anyone’s game. For those officials attending, including me, it was looking as if the 2nd half would ignite one way or another and that it did, as on 48 minutes Monte had a free-kick just outside the box following a foul on Toni, but was surprised that Luis stepped up to take the free-kick instead of Damian, who is a master at this type of kick and he shot the ball straight over the bar! On 55 minutes Monte's Manu get the first yellow. Still its attack and attack from both sides, and on 60 minutes Carlos makes a great save to deny Benijofar levelling the score, but then things started to go wrong for Monte who went off the boil. Changes took place on 62 minutes with Adrian and Barosso on for Alfredo and another! However

things were still not going Monte's way with Damian missing an open goal on 65 minutes. At this time it was also noticed for the first time that George a first team player with Monte a few years back was in the green kit of Benijofar. Good to see you George. Then the inevitable happened, which has to be said was due, 1-1 after 70 minutes because we were still in a sleep mode and were probably going to lose if we continued as we were. On 76 minutes, The Tank is on replacing Kevin, almost immediately another poor shot from Manu Sanchez. On 77 minutes Manu Sanchez is replaced by Maccan who takes up the centre forward role, and all of a sudden we are alive again. On 83 minutes we go 2-1 ahead with a 2nd goal for Toni, following another great cross from Damian who laid it on a plate for him.

For our presentation we returned to our sponsors bar “ Little Leias “ which is located close to Consum in Quesada, to be greeted by the staff who had prepared an assortment of sandwiches for us, the results were as follows NTP hole three Rob Ashman, the sixth hole was taken by our guest Duncan Roberts, Martin Collin won the twelfth, then converted his nearest the pin to a two which resulted in him winning the two’s pot, Ian Allison won the seventeenth, along with our soccer card by selecting Swansea, all nearest the pins won either a sleeve of golf balls or chose wine, the competition resulted in requiring a count back as Stephen ‘Gilly’ Gilbert and Barry Grinsell

So for Monte, after today’s game, move up the league. Regret, no final results or league positions available at the time of this report but its all to play for. So once again VAMOS MONTE. Report by David Winder

It's still end to end stuff and then on 89 minutes its 3-1 with an own goal but was disallowed as a Monte player was off side. What a shame to an end of a great game. VAMOS MONTE.

Busters Golf Society Our April competition was held at the Severiano Ballesteros designed Alicante golf course, where we competed for our annual Alroreal Trophy, this game is usually played at Altoreal Golf course but due to the Murcian borders being closed we had to make alternative arrangements, as Alicante was available and also being a course that’s popular with all of our members it was selected, to play there for the trophy. Alicante was a credit to its greens staff, the course and greens were in excellent condition albeit the green played a little slow, but with great company and reasonable weather for April, a good day was had by all.

Now it's also been announced that with end of season in sight, and 15 games still to play, after the next 2 games i.e. Aspe UD who are currently top of the league and Torrevieja, that the league standings at that time will be divided into 2 divisions, and whoever are in the top 7 will play one another to see who will be promoted, and the 7 below will play one another to see who will be relegated.

both scored thirty three points, also both players scored seventeen points on the back nine, however Gilly ended up taking second place as he lost to a better back six, the winner and runner up both received wine with Barry taking home the Trophy, correction Barry will take the Trophy home when John Rush last year’s winner is able to return to Spain after the Covid restrictions are lifted as the Trophy is still in John’s Spanish home. If you are interested in joining our small friendly society (it's free) please contact me at bustersgolfsociety@hotmail.com stating your phone number, and handicap. Barry Grinsell.

Imanyo Golf Society “Los Amigos Cup” This is the third year we have played for this cup, sadly Tony Whyatt, passed away two years ago but fellow members and friends, Andy Godfrey and Alan Martin, have taken the sponsorship in Tony’s memory. This was the first time in five years that we have played at Alenda and we found the course in very good condition; it was a very cold day (Spanish cold) for the five teams. We played Tony’s favourite format which had four players in a team changing partners every 6 holes scoring with the better ball Stableford points. Winners of the Los Amigos Cup were Chris Houghton, Brian Court, Derry Quinlan and Tom Goulden with 91

points, runners up were Peter Kelly, Martin Gadney, Mo Chaplin, and Steve Day with 84 points. Only two out of the five nearest the pins were won, hole 12 in 4 shots was Tom Goulden and hole 16 in 2 shots was Alan Boyden, longest drive went to Chris Houghton and the two’s pot of €20 was won on hole 16 by Martin Gadney. The football card was won by Steve Daywith Sheffield Wednesday winning €20 and raising €20 for this year’s charities.
