Three important restrictions remain despite relaxation of rules President of the Generalitat Valenciana, Ximo Puig, announced on Thursday the much anticipated relaxation of some restrictions as part of the de-escalation plan. The new flexibility of restrictions

represents an important step for hostelry and commerce, which can now remain open until 10pm. There are no changes to the capacity of bars, restaurants or shops but the capacity of cultural events is

expanded to 75% and that of ceremonies to 50%. The head of the regional government was keen to remind citizens that some measures will be maintained until May 9, when the State Of Alarm ends. Among the measures to remain is the regional perimeter closure, so it remains forbidden to enter or leave the Valencian Community except in exceptional circumstances (for work, a medical appointment, to care for an elderly relative, etc). Similarly, the curfew remains in place and at the same time, so citizens must stay at home from 10pm to 6am. Only two families can meet in private, with groups in public (a restaurant for example) limited to six. During his appearance before the media, Puig pointed out that “there can be no relaxation, the virus is still there. We

have to continue to be prudent.” “Right now the incidence is 40 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. It is six times lower than the Spanish average and we are the only community at low risk,” said Puig. Earlier this month, Puig already remarked as of May 9 it might be time for some measures to be lowered, especially the perimeter closure, because "many families have not had contact in a long time. That effort has paid off and now we have to overcome it in some way," he said. It is something that Puig hopes that the Generalitat can manage when the state of alarm ends, insisting however that we must wait until the 9th "and see how the general situation is." When the extension of bar and restaurant closing hours was extended to 10pm to coincide with the start of the

curfew, there was some confusion so the Generalitat clarified the following day that at 10pm customers must already be at home, and that the establishments must be closed.

Guardamar seeks to boost the labour market The Guardamar del Segura City Council and a representative of the Valencian Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FVMP) have met to discuss the collaboration signed agreement signed with the Valencian Employment and Training Service to encourage the labour market in the town. The meeting was attended by the City Council, the Mayor of Guardamar del Segura, José Luis Sáez and the Councillor for Economic Promotion Gisela Teva, as well as an Employment and Local Development technician. A representative of the FVMP, David Fernández, provincial coordinator also attended the meeting. The purpose of these actions is to facilitate the promotion of the labour market, and they include several lines of action. The agreement establishes the general framework for the start-up and development of two mobile Espai Labora points, to which the Guardamar del Segura City Council has agreed. At the mobile points, personalised attention will be offered to different groups of applicants, both to people registered and job seekers in the Espai Labora, as well as nonregistered people who are interested in the services offered. These mobile facilities will also

inform and publicise the services that the Labora provides to improve the employability of local residents. There will also be collaboration to establish a coordination framework for employment and training resources available across the province of Alicante, which will include those made available to local users by the Employment and Local Development Agency. This agreement is part of the Avalem Territori strategy, which aims to make territorial policies for employment more adapted to the real needs of the local community both businesses and potential employees. The Councillor for Economic Promotion Gisela Teva, has stressed the importance of "coordinating all available

resources between administrations to combat unemployment, with the aim of boosting the labour market and helping the local economy in its process of recovery from the effects of the pandemic”. The Valencian Federation of Municipalities and Provinces is an organisation whose purpose its is to defend the interests of the Valencian municipalities, unite resolutions and coordinate actions, in this regard José Luis Sáez, the Mayor of Guardamar, explained the value he placed on the support of the organisation and highlighted the importance of "municipalities to be close to their citizens, and especially at times when proximity is required as a key part of to understanding people's needs and demands".

Local Police in San Fulgencio foil two robberies San Fulgencio Local Police officers prevented two robberies in the area in recent days, revealed mayor José Sampere. The first of the attempted robberies took place on Wednesday when, after a tip off by a neighbour, officers arrived to a house in Urbanisation La Marina and found three hooded men in the process of trying to break into a safe. Upon noticing the police presence, the men fled before being able to steal anything. In their haste to escape the men left a backpack, which has been handed over to the Guardia Civil for fingerprints in the hope they can identify the robbers. Officers also prevented a second robbery on Friday in an establishment in the commercial area of San Fulgencio. This resulted in the arrest of two individuals for an alleged crime of robbery with violence and intimidation. It was the owner who called the police when it was detected that two people were trying to break into the safe. The pair

resisted being arrested, and during the struggle, one of the officers was injured and had to be treated at the health centre. Both individuals were transferred to the offices of the Guardia Civil in Guardamar. The Mayor commended the officers saying the success of both cases “are the result of the efforts of our agents to increase citizen security, in addition to reinforcing the surveillance of our streets in recent months to prevent this type of event from occurring in our municipal area.” The Local Police has reported that, in the coming days, "there will be an increase in random traffic controls in the municipality of San Fulgencio in addition to establishing more prevention points to control vehicles and people. Police Headquarters were keen to appeal to the public to report any suspicious activity in the municipality as quickly as possible, by contacting the Local Police headquarters on the telephone number 966 79 44 53.

Orihuela Costa schools request more classrooms The Municipal School Council has met in the Plenary Hall at Orihuela Town Hall to discuss the school arrangements for 2021/22 and the ‘urgent’ needs raised by some of the education centres across the municipality. Among the matters dealt with and approved unanimously, was the requests to the Department of Education for new units for both of the schools based on the coast - Los Dolses and Playas de Orihuela. The headteachers of the CEIP Los Dolses and CEIP Playas de Orihuela, Isaac Bonafé and

Francisco de la Peña, respectively, have requested the authorisation of new classrooms for the next academic year so that the educational needs of children on the coast can be met. The Municipal School Council was been chaired by the Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, who urged those present to demand and request everything that is needed and to be on the same page. He said: "From the Orihuela City Council we will always be at the disposal of the management teams of the education centres of

our town to support the needs that arise because all this benefits the students and their families." José Aix, Councillor for Education, thanked the schools for the unanimous support for all the proposals, stating that “it is necessary for the Department to respond to the proposal of the Municipal School Council. In terms of 2-year classrooms in La Campaneta and Rincón de Bonanza, this means that families can continue to live in these towns and, at the same time the school can attract families from other places, which means an increase in economic, social and cultural development for these districts. Regarding the request of the schools on the Orihuela coast, the need for space is due to the increase in population.” The Councillorfor Education has agreed the collaboration of the city council in those reforms or adjustments that are necessary to guarantee what is demanded by the school councils and the relevant schools.

Fundraising for Cody The amazing expat community in Orihuela Costa is rallying round to help raise money for a little boy who was born with a number of life-changing defects. Cody Grennan is just 19 months old and is awaiting on-going surgery to correct a birth defect in his oesophagus. He was born in Torrevieja hospital to Mom Pinja and Dad Johnny, who is a well-known local entertainer. The condition Cody was diagnosed with is called oesophageal atresia. He had his first surgery at 4 days old but it was later discovered that in addition, his trachea was nearly non-existent. This double defect is so rare that no-one else in Europe has it. During the first three months of his life Cody had three major operations and his fight to breathe goes on. This little boy, needs the community’s help to survive, his parents need financial support to be able to pay bills, travel to medical appointments and to ensure Cody has everything he needs, which may include medical equipment or specialist care. Due to Covid19 only one parent is allowed in to see Cody at any one time and they are unable to stay at the hospital with him so the fact of the matter is that it is cheaper for them to do that 6 hour round trip from Cabo Roig, sometimes on a daily basis, than it is to stay in Valencia. They are heart-broken, stressed, tired, exhausted and worried about their little boy. Please help There are a number of fundraising initiatives that people are planning to raise much needed funds and organisers

are asking locals to pull together. Spearheaded by The Irish Community in Orihuela Costa local bars, restaurants and businesses are asking people to join a ‘marathon’ effort and run, walk or bike as much of a 26 mile route as they can. The event will be held on 24th May and will start from La Fuente canal from 9am. Call into Evolution, La Fuente, to find out more details and register. One such supporter is Andy Corbett from the Lansdowne, Playa Flamenca Commercial Centre who is planning to run a full marathon on the day. Andy will be joined by wife Laura who will be biking the route. Andy said: “I met Johnny when we took over the Lansdowne and were sorting entertainment. When I heard about Cody

I just wanted to do something to help. We’ve only had a few weeks to train but are determined to complete it.” The couple are no strangers to helping the community having led the fundraising to buy a defibrillator for the commercial centre and organised food parcels during lockdown. The Stray Sod is hosting a coffee morning on Saturday 1st May from 11am with proceeds going to Cody’s fund. Call Audrey on 711066651, tickets are 4€ and there will be live music from The Maverick. There are also plans to hold an entertainment week, where each of the bars mentioned above and Ryan’s Bar will host a fun day of music for all the family. People can also donate through the Go Fund Me page set up in Cody’s name.

Man arrested for infecting 22 people with Covid19 National Police have arrested a man in his 40s for assault after he allegedly infected 22 people with covid – eight of them directly and 14 indirectly. Among those said to be infected by the man are three babies aged one or under. Despite having clear symptoms of coronavirus, and having gone to have a PCR test, the man went about his daily life as normal before finding out the result or quarantining himself from others. According to the man’s colleagues, he continued to attend the workplace despite having a fever of over 40 degrees. The man is said to have stayed at work, even after his colleagues expressed concern about his symptoms. Reports claim that after work, he went for a covid test, and went to the gym, but turned up again for work the next day,

and refused again to go home despite colleagues and bosses telling him to leave. One report even went as far as claiming he walked around at work, lowering his mask and deliberately coughing said, “I’m going to infect you all with coronavirus.” When he was told he had tested positive, five co-workers also tested positive (three of whom had unwittingly infected several relatives). Three people at the gym also tested positive, and infected family members. In total, 22 people were infected with the virus, the national police said. None of those infected ended up having to be admitted to the hospital. The man was arrested on suspicion of assault, his case was handed over to the judicial authority.

Orihuela Costa ATM robbery gang arrested Guardia Civil arrested six people in Vejer de la Frontera (Cádiz), the alleged perpetrators of a huge amount of robberies and thefts, throughout Orihuela Costa, across Spain and even in other European countries. The gang are accused of attempting to rob an ATM machine in Orihuela Costa in March 2019 using a tow truck and two stolen vehicles. Investigations carried out at the time pointed to a gang from central Europe, known to a number of security forces throughout Europe and with a multitude of police records. Those investigated were found living in several illegally occupied homes in Orihuela Costa, from which they were evicted in March. While the investigation was underway, three of the men arrested are alleged to have been involved in as many as six robberies or attempted robberies of ATM machines as well as the theft of seven vehicles and seven tow trucks, used in the ATM heists and then abandoned in Alicante, Murcia or Valencia. The gang, sometimes with alongside extended family, moved together constantly through Spain, travelling with young children in motor homes (some of them stolen and bearing false license plates). The gang moved

around and stayed at tourist camping areas, usually for no more than a fortnight at a time. With large numbers of tourists and camper vans, they managed to go unnoticed. Once they had established their local base, police say they went out every day usually in pairs and covering different local areas, in order to commit robberies, stealing either cash or items which they could sell. Most of the robberies were committed on vehicles and camper vans of tourists, while they left them parked in free parking areas where they went to go hiking, go to the beach or to carry out other leisure activities. The gang also targeted car parks around busy shopping centres. The crimes were not entirely random or accidental, since they observed their potential victims, through binoculars, in order to verify if they left backpacks or handbags in the vehicle. Apart from the cash, they also targeted cameras, laptops and other items which could be sold easily and quickly. If, in the robberies they managed to obtain credit cards, they used them to make payments over the Internet, where they paid for access to video game platforms or to stream series and

movies. They also stole or attempted to steal cash using the cards at ATM machines. So far, police have investigated thirty seven robberies and two attempted robberies linked to the gang but believe the real number is actually considerably higher given the intense activity of the gang. The gang also made trips to France, where they have a criminal record, as well as Italy and Germany. The constant movement and measures taken by the gang to avoid detection led to a lengthy and complex investigation over several months until their presence was recently detected in Cadiz and finally they could be arrested. Three men between 36 and 51 years old and three women between 20 and 49 years old, all of them of Bosnian nationality, were arrested and charged with a number of offences. After appearing in court, all were released with charges.

Schools ask police to step in over mobile phone use National Police revealed they are being asked by more and more schools in the area to give talks and advice over the use of mobile phones by children, some as young as nine or ten. Teachers and police fear an overexposure to the internet which according to police has a direct impact on school attendance and more exposure to the risks of being online. The Citizen Participation department of the National Police in Elche, made up of three officers, has given 300 talks so far this year at the request of local schools. Schools have expressed concerns about the increase in the time students spend glued to screens, something that has become worse due to lockdown. Many of the talks offered by the unit have been given online but they have also had to visit classes in person – especially where there has been specific cases of online bullying. The officers say the main risks of allowing minors unsupervised access to the internet are cyber

bulling, scams, exposure to violent and pornographic content, contact with unknown adults, sending images which would compromise the child, viral challenges that include selfharm, and conflict in WhatsApp groups. The root of all this, said the three officers, is that children have a mobile phone in their hands far too early and in many cases without adult supervision. National Police do not recommend the use of a mobile until the age of 12 and recommend it starts with total parental control. The officers advise that the child can be gradually given an independence that depends on their maturity and they are very clear on two things: no social networks before the recommended ages (most are allowed from age 13, except TikTok which is from 12 and WhatsApp which is from 16) and that there must be a time limit. According to these officers, parents have told them that their children are losing sleep

due too much screen time. In addition, the officers now find that mobile phone problems are increasingly beginning at an earlier age. In fact, although the awareness talks they carry out are mainly for 5th class in primary (and usually, up to the second year of secondary school), there are primary schools that are requesting these talks for 4th class. The message with which the National Police always end these awareness talks is that both the children and their parents use common sense to make good use of the mobile phone. Empathy is another of the key "weapons" to combat the problems generated by the internet, according to the officers. "We ask them not to do what they would not like done to themselves, we explain that hurting others, harassing, humiliating, is not a game - it is a crime, even if it seems easy to do it from home", the police explained.

Children's cultural program Orihuela tackles mosquitoes across the for Orihuela Costa municipality After the rains of recent weeks, the Department of the Environment has authorised the Mosquito control service CTL to intensify the treatment to prevent the spread of mosquitoes throughout the municipality. The mild temperatures, together with the rains, shorten the biological cycle of mosquitoes, causing massive hatching to occur. Dámaso Aparicio said: “The larvicide treatments are being carried out both in the rain water scuppers of the old town, districts and coast, as well as in areas that have been flooded in the municipality. The treatments are carried out in areas where the levels of adult mosquitoes are high, using a long-range pneumatic cannon. All in all, a good result is expected from the mosquito control campaign.” The first thing that is being dealt with are "those places in the municipality with recurrent stagnation of water, especially in the course and margins of the Segura River - the Councillor explained - as well as in those areas that become a refuge for the adult mosquito and that affect urban or populated areas. The Department of the Environment will continue to

advance the prevention programme and will act every fifteen days until the month of September. It will also deal with adhoc increases in the pesky insects that occur at various times of the year. "The dates for the treatments are indicative, as the winning company will change the calendars and repeat the treatments, at no cost to the City Council, whenever necessary, whether requested by the Oriolano consistory, by the specialists of the business or requests from local residents,” explained Councillor Aparicio. Again, the Councillor for the Environment has called for ‘greater collaboration from the Generalitat Valenciana to carry out this type of action’. Orihuela has only received

700 euros from the Valencian government, another 18,000 euros is funded by the Alicante Provincial Council, but this means that the City Council assumes almost the entire cost which amounts to 71,775 euros. In addition to these controls that are carried out, individual action is very important to avoid the appearance of mosquitoes in stagnant water where the lava develops. People must monitor and eliminate places that can accumulate water, even a small amount, on patios, terraces, balconies and in country houses. The Department of the Environment has set up an email address so that people can report areas where possible outbreak may fester: www.environment@orihuela.es

Mar Ezcurra, Councillor for Culture and Youth, has presented the children's program that will take place for the first time at the Alameda del Mar Civic Center, Orihuela Costa, on a permanent basis. This is a program similar to the one that is being developed quarterly at the María Moliner Library in Orihuela and which includes workshops, storytellers and theatre. “This cultural program dedicated to the children of the coast began on Thursday (22nd April) at 6pm with a handicraft workshop and will continue every Tuesday and Thursday each week until next July," Mar Ezcurra explained.

The workshops, storytellers and theatres are prepared to cater for English-speaking children. The activities are totally free and comply with all sanitary measures due to the Covid pandemic. Therefore, the capacity is reduced to 20 people and who will enter the room in order of arrival on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. "We have organised expressive painting workshops, watercolors, recycling, poetry, as well as hilarious storytelling in several languages so that the little ones can enjoy a culture adapted to them," said Mar Ezcurra, who thanked the Department of Social Welfare that has provided the space to be able to carry out

these cultural activities. "We intend to carry out this children's cultural program continuously throughout the year and for now have listed the activities planned for this first quarter, hoping that they will have good acceptance and become a fixed appointment for the boys and girls of the coast,” the councillor said. The full schedule can now be viewed on the website of the Department of Culture: culturaorihuela.com and through the social networks @culturaorihuela and @orihuelajoven

Guardia Civil seize 600kg of hash Guardia Civil on Thursday seized over 600kg of hash in two separate raids in Torrevieja and Granja de Rocamora. The first took place in the morning after receiving a tip off from an off-duty national police officer claiming that he had seen two containers that he suspected contained drugs in the Cabo Cervera area. The Guardia mobilized by land and sea and located seven drums with 221 kilos of hashish between La Mata beach and La Zorra cove. An investigation is now underway to locate those responsible. That same day in the afternoon, a car fled a checkpoint in the Orihuela Costa area and after being pursued up the AP-7 by the Guardia Civil, it left for Granja de Rocamora and the driver attempted to abandon the car. He was arrested and in the car, officers found and seized ten bales containing a total of around 400 kilos of hashish.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP The UK’s economy continued its rapid recovery with PMI data for April coming in above its expected levels. The headline data was Composite PMI reading at 60, ahead of the estimated 58.6. Manufacturing came in above the expected 59 at 60.7, and Services, again ahead of estimations, came in at 60.1 just above the expected 59. Most of this data has been conducted since April 12 economic reopening, so it captures both the impact of restrictions being eased and the pace of recovery. Viraj Patel, Global Macro Strategist at Vanda Research has stated the lack of reaction from sterling "to what has been very good data in the UK" suggests that “the UK reopening story is priced in now." He says it also suggests sterling's rally yearto-date had more to do with other local factors, including the Bank of England's decision to walk away from introducing negative interest rates and relief following the Brexit deal. After a few difficult days, it was a positive week for sterling. Finishing joint first place with the Japanese yen, the pound saw an average gain of 0.3%. Through no real fault of its own, the pound found itself at the back of the pack on three of the five days. Technical (chart) issues were reported as being a key contributor in the pound’s fluctuation. Having rebounded from trend support above €1.1450 at the end of February, sterling did so again on Monday morning. Sentiment also played a large part as investors blew hot and cold about a resurgence of the pandemic. The UK economic data were mostly benign. Reports from Rightmovestated that asking prices

for residential property reached a record high in a “buying frenzy”. Official figures confirmed that house prices were up by 8.6% on the year. Jobs numbers were in line with forecast, with unemployment falling to 4.9%. Inflation at 0.7% was almost exactly as forecast. Retail sales in March were much stronger than expected, up by 5.4% on the month and 7.2% on the year. EURO In contrast, the euro began the week well but quickly ran out of steam. Thursday looked to be the start of a potential recovery as it performed well against sterling, however, this wasn’t long lasting. It eventually ended the week relatively unchanged against the major currencies, having added two thirds of a US cent and given up a fifth of a cent to sterling. The main event of the euro’s week was the European Central Bank President’s press conference on Thursday, which followed the announcement that monetary policy would remain unchanged. Christine Lagarde was uncomplimentary about the EU economy, saying it was still “on crutches” and dismissing any idea of tighter policy. The few economic data tended to bear out that position. Inflation rose from 0.9% to 1.3% in March, exactly as forecast. The current account surplus narrowed by 25.7% in February. Construction output was down by an annual 5.8%. The ECB’s own survey found that banks had become more selective in their criteria for lending to businesses. But at least consumer confidence continued to recover, rising by more than two points to a 13month high of -8.1.

BITE SIZE NEWS:

Finally finished... after three centuries A key part of Barcelona's iconic Sagrada Família cathedral has been slotted into place, with the final touches and embellishments due to be added over the course of 2021. Constructors are back on track and expect to meet their deadline of December for the Torre de la Mare de Déu ('Tower of the Mother of God'), after long-term plans for Europe's most famous unfinished building were scuppered due to the pandemic. The internationally-loved landmark is quite possibly the world's longestrunning building project: Since the foundation stones were first laid, work has never stopped for more than a few months at a time and always due to extreme circumstances, such as last year's lockdown; and yet, in that time, construction engineers, planners, and visiting tourists have been born, lived to a ripe old age and died from natural causes. And the work is still in progress. The long-term goal was to have the cathedral 100 percent complete according to the original design of the architect, Antoni Gaudí, in 2026, the 100th anniversary year of his cruellyironic death after he was run over by a bus whilst crossing the road to his own creation. Depending upon how things pick up, it could well be that the cathedral is fully finished by the 105th or 110th anniversary of Gaudí's demise. Even then, cultural historians far into the future will not know whether to call it a 19th-, 20th- or 21st-century structure,

but will definitely struggle to fit any of its architectural elements neatly into the typical styles of any era over these three. Indeed, the Sagrada Família is about as atypical as you can get – evidence of Gaudí's wacky, highly-unconventional approach to building architecture is clearly on display at the psychedelic mosaïc Parc Güell complex a few streets away, and in his red-and-green-tiled spire-shaped restaurant in Comillas, Cantabria. Delightfully weird and tastefully crazy, even visitors who are not usually overawed by church or cathedral architecture find the Sagrada Família a source of intrigue; it is not common to see mass taking place beneath a cubist stained-glass Virgin Mary next to a cement-mixer, or towers that look like a cross between pock-marked cacti and red-hot pokers, but Barcelona residents have been very used to seeing all this on their horizon for the last five generations. Last Tuesday, the pinnacle of the 'Virgin's Tower' – set to be the secondtallest, after the 'Jesus Tower' ('Torre de Jesús') at 127 metres – was fitted, creating the basic framework, which will now be gradually cemented and plastered and decorated over the next seven or eight months. Follow the star The pinnacle was built in a workshop, and the 12-point star which will top the tower is also being constructed at ground level – which is necessary, since, even though it will look like a small

Christmas-tree adornment that you could easily miss if you don't look up, it will measure 7.5 metres in diameter. This will be worth the 135-year wait after 2021, you can follow this star to Barcelona and admire the latest feature. Each face of the 3D star will have lights fitted inside it, and each of the 12 points will be glassed over, so it will glow brightly over the city at night, resembling the mythical star the Magi followed to reach Bethlehem and Christ's birthplace. The star itself will be supported by six criss-crossing concrete beams covered in a multitude of light-reflecting pale-blue and white tiles, emerging as three overlapping posts at the summit, set within a crown-shaped base, so it looks as though the top part had been peeled.

A man is rescued from ditch in San Fulgencio A man has been injured in a work accident after falling into a sinkhole on the CV-859 road, in the municipality of San Fulgencio. The 38-year-old man fell into a ditch at a construction site in San Fulgencio. The accident occurred due to the collapse of a low wall that gave way. The firefighters from Almoradí were called to the scene, and formed a walkway in order to have better access to the accident victim. We can all hear the sharp intake of air when you discover the price of your dream home. More often than not, it’s higher than what you’d ideally like to pay. You’ve watched hundreds of episodes of A Place In The Sun. You’ve seen how they do it on t.v. and now you think you’re ready to make an offer that won’t be refused! So how can you make sure your offer will be accepted?

• The more homes that are on the market for sale means you can go in with a sensible offer. Beware! Go too low and you could offend the seller, then they won’t be open to any negotiation at all….. it’s their memories that they’re putting a price on after all, so be compassionate. Don’t get carried away with the property programmes. They often advise in making a cheeky offer, but what you must take into consideration is the year in which the programme originally aired. Like any housing market in the world, it does fluctuate from year to year.

When crafting your offer remember this… • The fewer homes that are available for sale means your offer needs to be pretty close, if not the full asking price.

So when it comes to negotiating on that perfect price, all offers may be welcome, but only a few will be considered!

Pandemic Investing – How It Can Work For You. The pandemic has overhauled the lives of most households over the past year. The changing way we live has come to the fore during the coronavirus pandemic, as much of the world has had to adapt to social distancing and national lockdowns. This has sped up the adoption of technology, with work moving online, lockdown restrictions making people more reliant on streaming services to stay entertained, and internet shopping for their deliveries. There are plenty of technology stocks that have benefited from this theme. Beyond the pandemic, investors could consider

technological, scientific and medical advances or themes such as climate change or shifting social and economic demographics. Investing in trends means you can invest in the future and understand where your money is going. However, diversification is the key word for any portfolio. This means parts of your portfolio can perform well even if others slump and should smooth out any losses over the long-term. Searching company financial and performance data to choose the top stocks for your investment portfolio can be baffling and time-consuming.

Compulsory masks outside questioned Wearing a face mask outdoors and then putting it into your pocket when you enter a bar is like wearing a helmet to go for a walk and taking it off when you get on a motorbike. Despite this, it is common to see this paradox in many countries such as Spain, where it is mandatory to wear a face mask outside, but there are exceptions for indoor spaces such as restaurants and offices. But a growing number of leading experts have begun to question these contradictory measures, including Marc Lipsitch, the head of the Centre for Communicable Disease Dynamics at Harvard University in the United States. “I am generally a hawk about maintaining rules with a clear benefit. Outdoor masking has notable costs and really no evidence of benefits,” he wrote in a message on Twitter. There has been substantial data on the issue of coronavirus contagion for a year now. A study of 318 coronavirus outbreaks in China, carried out at the beginning of the pandemic, found that 317 took place in indoor spaces. Only one of the 318

outbreaks happened outdoors when a 27-year-old man presumably caught the coronavirus in a town talking outside to a person who had recently arrived from Wuhan, where the virus was first identified. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) only recommends that masks be

worn in confined spaces, but “can be considered in crowded outdoor settings.” However, in Spain, face masks are mandatory even if a person is going for a walk by themselves in a park. Under the current rules, a mask must be worn in all public spaces, regardless of whether social distancing can be respected. On 6th April, the Madrid Public Health Association (Amasap)

called for an end to the “absurd” mandatory use of face masks in outdoor spaces. The coronavirus is predominately spread through the air, via aerosols that build up like an invisible cloud when a person talks or coughs, according to new research published last week in the medical journal The Lancet. The authors of the study – led by doctor Trish Greenhalgh from Oxford University in the United Kingdom – say the way to prevent contagion is to: avoid being indoors with people from a different household, increase ventilation, use wellfitted masks in indoor spaces and reduce capacity. “It is only necessary to wear a mask outdoors when we are doing strenuous exercise, such as running if we pass very close to someone, for example, on a pavement,” says Greenhalgh. “For everything else, it is not necessary to wear a face mask outdoors, because the virus quickly dissipates in the air. But if I breathe in the air you have just exhaled, I am at risk.”

Madrid cannibal on trial over Mother’s death The grisly details of what police found at the home of Alberto Sánchez Gómez's mother were heard at the start of the trial in Madrid. The is man accused of killing his mother, then dismembering and eating her. Alberto Sánchez Gómez, now 28, was arrested in February of 2019 by police in Madrid, after the remains of his mother were found at her house when a friend expressed concern that she had not seen her for a month. The gruesome details of what police found at the home of María Soledad Gómez, 66, were detailed at the start of the trial in the Spanish capital. A police officer testified that human remains were found all over the house, including in the fridge, in a pot in the kitchen and the shower. After the defendant was arrested he confessed to strangling his mother, then cutting her up with a saw and two kitchen knives, eating parts of her and feeding other parts to his dog. Speaking in court, the officers who took part in the arrest said: “He was very calm, I didn’t see any emotion of any kind. He was very calm, very cold.” “We had come to her home on other occasions,” the officer said. “There was a restraining order [against Sánchez Gómez] for

verbal abuse.” According to police, while he confessed to murdering his mother, his mind appeared to be elsewhere: “He told us that he was worried about his dog.” Officers told the court that they were surprised by how nonchalantly he described what had happened, as if it were a “casual conversation.” When questioned in the station by an officer about his reasons for killing his mother, his response was terse. “He said that it was because she made his life impossible,” said the officer who took Sánchez Gómez’s statement. Sánchez Gómez told the court that he heard voices telling him to kill his mother. After his mother filed a restraining order against him, Sánchez Gómez had been

living on the street, in friends’ places and in squatter homes. His daily life revolved around “drinking every day, smoking pot and hearing voices,” he said, adding that he “saw hidden messages” when he watched television. Sánchez told the court that he has had psychological problems for years, and that he began hearing voices at the age of 16. After returning from an internship in Greece some years ago, he was admitted to Princesa Hospital on several occasions to undergo psychiatric treatment. In court, Sánchez said he does not remember anything from the day his mother died. Prosecutors are seeking a sentence of 15 years and five months for murder. The trial continues.

Who can spin my cat hair? Last week, local craft association Amata received an unusual request: “Good morning, I’m looking for somebody who can spin the hair of my cat.” As it so happened, there was a spinner listed in Amata’s database – not only that, but they were living in the same village as the caller! On another occasion somebody asked for a craftsman who could repair or replace a broken part of some antique furniture. And again, such a person was found within two days. This is not as surprising as it sounds: Amata has been organising craft fairs over the last 20 years or more and consequently has collected the data of over a thousand artisans from all over Spain and in every imaginable craft, from glass blower to bookbinder, from

blacksmith to chair mender. The funny part of it is, that so few people realise how versatile real craft people are. An artisan is not just somebody who makes nice things to sell in craft fairs. He or she has the skill to repair or restore, decorate furniture and other objects, add an image or a text to a chosen piece of work and, last but not least, accept special orders.

At their virtual craft village www.puebloartesano.es Amata introduces you to some forty real artisans and invites you into their workshops and stores, where you can watch them at work and buy what they have made. Other artisans have set up a stall in the virtual fairs that are held in this village. And if you haven’t found what you are looking for, you can put your request to Amata and they will look for the most suitable artisan for your query. However unusual the item you are thinking of, Amata will try and find the person who can make it for you!

We need to talk about your financial adviser… By Sam Kelly DipPFS, EFA, BA (Hons) Managing Partner Chorus Financial i.e., a Spanish Compliant Investment Bond, or an International Bond held under a QROPs or SIPP.

Looking back, it’s obvious I was fairly naïve when I first moved to Spain in terms of just how the financial services industry works here. I have been an investor since my teens, more than 20 years now, and have successfully managedinvestment portfolios for many years. When I made the decision to move permanently to Spain, I had no idea the journey it would take me on… beyond the 40 hour drive itself! I arrived here following a job offer from a large global financial advisory firm, well-known here in Spain, with what I perceived to be a pretty good reputation. The truth is, within my first week I was both dumbstruck and horrified by the practises I saw. The entire advice model wasn’t built around client needs and outcomes, transparency and expertise, it was built around how much undisclosed commission could be squeezed out of the client, whether through the funds themselves, or an investment bond –

I immediately realised I could not remain at this company, so quickly began speaking with the other major firms here in Spain. To my amazement I found that every firm I spoke with had exactly the same approach. However they dressed it up, and however well they presented their recommendations, these plans were basically all the same. A bond with a tie-in and a limited fund choice, both of which paid enormous commissions to the adviser whilst the client ultimately saw sub-optimal returns. This wasn’t the type of career I wanted. The reality is, I was already very comfortable in terms of my personal finances, and I hadn’t moved to Spain for some ‘get-rich-quick’ scheme. I was here because my family have always had a close connection with Spain, my mother has lived here for decades, and every time I got off the plane, when that warm air hit me, it made me feel like I was already home. I was here to build a life and build a client base who would want to remain with me for many years, not discover a few years down the line that I had ripped them off! Sadly though, that is the case for so

many of you living here, and you probably don’t even realise it yet. Spain has had no law requiring fee and commission disclosure like we had in the UK, and many firms deliberately targeted our communities for this very reason. It would not be uncommon to see a client who had been tied in for 5, 8 or 10 years to an investment bond, QROPs, even an International SIPP, who had signed paperwork that generated as much as 13% commission for their adviser on the very first day – a combination of bond and fund commissions. With no other company out there that I wanted to join, Chorus Financial was founded. Chorus was built off a vision of ethical, high quality, transparent advice. We have worked tirelessly for many years now to educate our communities here in Spain, and on two occasions we have won major European awards for those efforts. Sitting here today writing this article, I have just come off a Skype call with a client in Mallorca, completed investment instruction for a couple in Marbella and had some clients from Javea pop in for a review. It fills me with so much pride today that Chorus has flourished to be one of the most trusted and successful financial advice companies in Spain, with clients all

across the mainland, the Balearics, the Canaries, and many now scattered around the World. Our vision and promise continues to be that we will advise you to the best of our abilities, always promising to put you first, with full fee transparency, value and the best investment portfolios available to you. Regardless of where you live in Spain you too can benefit from having a Chorus Financial adviser. Whether you’re looking for a new pension or investment recommendation, or have an existing plan, perhaps a QROPs, SIPP or Spanish Investment Bond from companies like SEB, Quilter (formally OMI), Lombard International or others, Chorus can help you. To discover how Chorus can transform your financial future email me on s.kelly@chorusfinancial.es, call +34 664 398 702, or visit www.chorusfinancial.es for more information. If you’re a qualified financial adviser looking to work for a different kind of financial advisory firm, you can contact us too! We are opening our 300 square meter Expat Financial Services Centre in Benijofar this summer. It will be the leading facility in Spain, and we need quality, ethical financial advisers to join our Costa Blanca team.

Investment contracts are intended as medium to long term investments, and all investments have some level of risk. Figures in our articles are examples of what can be achieved and cannot be guaranteed; the value of your investments can go down as well as up. Fees and charges can vary and will be fully explained to you before any advice can take place. This article should not be considered as investment advice or a recommendation of any particular product.

Two Harris's hawks and a black kite join the demo team at Terra Natura

Spain prepares for vaccine passports

Two Harris's hawks (Parabuteo unicintus) and a black kite (Milvus migrans) have been added to the team of birds of prey that take part in educational flight demonstrations run by Terra Natura, Benidorm, to raise awareness about the conservation status of these birds. The two Harris's hawks each weigh around 600 grams, measure about 35 centimetres and still have their characteristic juvenile plumage, since they are less than a year old. In the case of the kite, it is a larger female that measures about 60 centimetres and weighs approximately 800 grams. The demonstrations showcase the flight of birds of prey to visitors, as well as highlighting the art of falconry and the flight techniques used by this type of bird. The conservation of these species is essential for the biodiversity of ecosystems, since they contribute in a natural way to pest control. Harris's hawks organize the hunt in a group and leadership of the group rests with a matriarchal figure. Kites are migratory birds that can travel thousands of kilometres during the migration. Both species are outgoing and

The Spanish Government has decided to permit European Union citizens to enter the country without being subject to COVID19 test and self-isolation requirements, provided that they hold a Digital Green Certificate from June. The EU authorities announced that the Digital Green Certificate, also known as a vaccine passport, will be ready by June. It will allow tourists to travel freely without being subject to COVID-19 travel restrictions throughout the EU Member States, including Spain. “It will allow for more people to arrive in a safer manner and facilitate the mobility of people in the European Union, guarantee public health protection and permit social and economic activity to resume free of charge,” the General Secretary of Digital Health Alfredo Gonzales said. Furthermore, Gonzales pointed out that the certificate is not a passport or a precondition in order to be able to travel. However, it would tremendously help in boosting tourism in Spain during the summer season.

sociable. Harris's hawks are native to northern and central South America, and kites from various areas such as Europe, sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, and Oceania. Terra Natura Benidorm is home to many birds of prey from rescue centres, which cannot be reintroduced into the wild due to

physical problems that they have and that would prevent them from surviving. The park facilitates their socialization through contact with other birds, and shows them to visitors in educational demonstrations to raise awareness about their conservation.

Gonzales also noted that Spain had started the process of certificate implementation in order for it to be ready in time for June, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports. In regards to this, the EU Commission has explained that each country’s authorities will be

responsible for issuing the certificates. Nevertheless, it has not been decided yet through which institution Spain will issue them. The EU Commission was the first to propose creating a Digital Green certificate back in March to make it possible for those vaccinated EU citizens to travel without any restrictions throughout the bloc.

The Member states will still be able to require arrivals from EU countries to test or self-isolate. However, they must inform the Commission and all Member States of their decision while providing valid reasons. According to the EU Commission, the Vaccine Certificate will include the holder’s following information: • Name and surname • Date of birth • Issuing Member State • A unique identifying QR code • Vaccine product, manufacturer, number of doses, and date of vaccination for those who took the vaccine • Type of test, time and date of the test, test centre, and test results for tested travellers • Date of the positive test result, the issuer of the certificate, date of issuance, and validity date for recovered travellers The certificates would be issued in two languages, in English and the official language of the issuing country.

Hotel bookings Spain’s population falls for May News that the 'State of Alarm' in Spain will not be renewed after it ends on 9th May has caused holiday bookings to soar, especially on the islands. Worldwide, Spain has the second-highest number of hotel reservations for May, beaten only by the USA. According to various booking platforms, 'staycation' reservations in Spain for the month of May have rocketed by 122 perent, and are already at around 60 percent of the figure for 2019, the last year of world 'normality'. Searches for trips and accommodation for summer remains stable, but as the season gets closer, they are expected to rise and showing signs of heading in that direction already. Just a few weeks ago, bookings for May had all but dried up – and then Spain's president Pedro Sánchez announced 9th May would be the last day of the 'State of Alarm' declared last year in response to the pandemic, meaning, technically, all restrictions nationwide on movement and trade should be lifted. From that moment on, reservations shot up almost overnight. Tourism minister Reyes Maroto said

that bookings for the Balearic and Canary Islands, travelling from the mainland, had 'exploded'. Sra Maroto has, however, warned Spain-based holidaymakers to 'act with caution', since until everyone is vaccinated, those who have not can still suffer harmful effects if they catch the SARS-CoV-2 virus. It is believed that being vaccinated does not prevent a person catching and passing on the virus, but stops it from making them ill. Meanwhile, holiday platform TravelgateX has reported Spain's booking numbers for the whole of the month of May are the secondhighest on earth after the USA, ahead of México, Greece and Portugal, in that order, who make up the rest of the top five. Another booking site, Destinia, says 24 percent of its reservations made for next month so far are for destinations in the Canary Islands, whilst 8 percent are for Madrid city, and 6 percent for the eastcoast metropolitan area of Alicante. Bookings are much welcome across the local area whose businesses need the custom and income. Of course the Southern Costa Blanca typically enjoys some of the warmest, sunniest weather in the country year-round.

Spain’s population fell by 106,146 people last year, the first drop after four straight years of growth. That’s according to provisional data released by the National Statistics Institute (INE) and based on local registry statistics. Of the country’s 47.3 million registered residents, 88.6 percent have Spanish citizenship (41.9 million) and 11.4 percent are foreign nationals (5.4 million). Demographers said that factors such as deaths from the coronavirus pandemic and decreased migration flows due to border closures have played a role in this dip in Spain’s registered population. A fall in the birth rate has also influenced the overall decline to a certain degree. Every new statistic serves to confirm the impact of the Covid-19 health crisis on Spain’s demographics. Earlier this year, the INE released provisional figures showing a historically high number of deaths and a record low number of marriages in 2020. Now the figures are showing a 0.2 percent reduction in Spain’s population, which has been felt more intensely among Spanish nationals in absolute terms (79,815 versus 26,331 foreign residents). Expressed as a percentage, however, the drop is bigger among the foreign community: 0.5 percent compared with 0.2 percent. “What we’re seeing is an interruption of the continuous growth of the last four years due to a very serious event, a pandemic, that has caused disruptions in every aspect of society – from a traumatic situation in the health system, which has caused high mortality, to individual movement constrained by the border closures,” explains Diego Ramiro,

director of the Institute for Economics, Geography and Demographics of the National Research Council (CSIC). The expert adds that fewer births have also played a role, if a smaller one, on the population decline. Before the Covid-19 pandemic there was already a downward curve in birth and fertility rates. But the health crisis has intensified the trend. The INE’s early estimates show a 10 percent drop in November 2020 compared with the same month in 2019, followed by a drop of over 20 percent in December. The lower birth figures for this latter month show the first effects of confinement, as those babies were conceived in March 2020, when a threemonth lockdown began. Many couples have since postponed having children due to economic and health-related uncertainties. The most densely populated regions of Spain on 1st January, 2021 were Andalusia, Catalonia and Madrid. At the other end of the spectrum, La Rioja, Cantabria and Navarre had the smallest registered populations. The number of registered residents has dropped in most Spanish regions over the last year.

Leaving the cities Statistics also show a rise in registered residents in Murcia, Castilla-La Mancha and Cantabria. “We’ll have to analyze internal-population movements. It’s possible that some people left the big cities to go live elsewhere,” notes this expert. Last year, there was a drop of 37,870 EU nationals registered as residents of Spain. Meanwhile, registered non-EU residents grew by 11,539 individuals. The overall population decline of 2020 is expected to be felt again in 2021, given that the effects of the pandemic are not yet over. “Our population has been growing for years, basically due to immigration. The crisis has suddenly halted those dynamics, which is something that also happened during the previous economic crisis,” notes Albert Esteve, director of the Centre for Demography Studies at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. “It is to be expected that the drop will continue in 2021; it will all depend on how the economy recovers and whether mobility restrictions are eased, but probably there won’t be time enough for immigration to recover.”

Fossilised Neanderthal footprints Spain can’t afford another summer like 2020 found on a beach in Spain Paleoanthropologists have discovered more than 80 fossilised footprints in Southern Spain, on an uneven span of rock that used to be a sandbar. In their analysis, the research team determined the prints were made by 36 individuals, a group of Neanderthal adults and children. The team’s findings are published in Scientific Reports. They come on the heels of the 2019 discovery of 80,000-year-old Neanderthal footprints on a beach near Le Rozel, France. The newly announced trace fossils date back to over 100,000 years ago, which may make them the oldest known Neanderthal prints. “The discovery of these Neanderthal footprints is part of a period where more and more fossil hominin footprints are being discovered,” co-author Jérémy Duveau, a paleoanthropologist at the National Museum of Natural History in Paris who also studied the Le Rozel footprints, said in an email. Duveau noted that each successive discovery has improved paleoanthropologists’ techniques going forward, but “it is undeniable that, as in June 2020, a crew of researchers led by Eduardo Mayoral, a paleontologist at the University of Huelva in Spain, saw fossilized animal tracks on the beach, which is called Matalascañas and is on the Iberian Coast in Doñana National Park. It was only later that they realised the ancient human presence. In all paleontological or archaeological discoveries, there is a certain amount of luck involved.” “Nobody recognised the existence of the hominid footprints at that time, which were only discovered by my team two

months later, when we began to study the whole surface in detail,” Mayoral explained. Analysing scans of the footprints, which revealed their sizes and the depth of the depressions, the team was able to determine specific individuals in the group and their rough heights and ages. The total assemblage yielded 11 probable Neander-kid prints and 25 adult prints. The adult Neanderthals averaged between 4 and 5 feet tall, though there was an outlier who seems to have topped 6 feet. The researchers posit those prints may have just been extra-pressed into the ground by a Neanderthal of a more standard height who stomped a bit harder than everyone else. When at the beach, how can one resist having some fun in the sand? As for why these Neanderthal footprints keep on being found beachside, it’s not just that they loved

soaking up the sun. Rather, these beaches in France and Spain offered unique opportunities for our cousins’ footprints to fossilize and subsequently be discovered. “The fact that Le Rozel and Matalascañas sites are located on the coast does not necessarily mean that Neanderthals spent more time in this type of environment,” Duveau said. “We must keep in mind that Neanderthals were hunter-gatherers who moved regularly to acquire resources.” Last year, evidence turned up that Neanderthals were diving for clams off the coast of Italy and consumed seafood. Other research has found that these extinct humans often suffered from swimmer’s ear. Clearly, they took advantage of the ocean’s resources, which is not surprising for a species whose intelligence and emotional complexity has long been underestimated.

Despite rising coronavirus infections and hiccups in Spain's vaccine rollout, its secretary of state for tourism said that the country is working to recover its tourism sector this summer. "We can't afford another summer like 2020," said Fernando Valdes in a conference at Madrid's Nebrija University. Between July and September of last year -- Spain's high season -- the number of international tourists plummeted by 79.2 percent. The country, highly dependent on tourism, saw its GDP shrink by a historic 10.8 percent last year -- one of the steepest drops in the world. Valdes acknowledged that tourism would not recover to pre-pandemic levels yet, but said Spain's Tourism Ministry was working to spread the message that travel "is not incompatible with safety." His statement came as the EU agreed on the basic pillars of the so-called vaccine passport. One key amendment was that it would not be "a precondition to exercise free

movement rights and it is not a travel document, in order to stress the principle of non-discrimination, in particular towards non-vaccinated persons." That could be seen as a blow to countries like Spain that were hoping the document could allow those who have been immunised to travel freely. Spain, like all of Europe, has suffered major delays in vaccination, particularly due to problems surrounding the AstraZeneca and Janssen vaccines. Still, the country has managed to give 17 percent of its population at least partial immunity through vaccination. But, Spain's infection rate continues to rise and has reached its highest level since late February. On Wednesday, the Health Ministry reported more than 10,000 new cases. Yet, with test positivity rates beginning to level off, it appears that Spain's fourth wave may end up being relatively small compared to previous ones that overwhelmed the healthcare system.

Below is a short extract from a release by our Council. “Orihuela will contract an external company for its financial control. The City Council seeks an audit to support and complement the area of Intervention in economic control. The Auditor and the Mayor of the Treasury justify subcontracting due to the lack of specialized personnel in the department.” If you use this analogy, then the whole council should be replaced as well who are grossly overpaid for their lack of specialised personnel. Mayor €61,537 Deputy mayor €52,000 Councillors € 46,152 Advisors €37,000 Plus expenses. They are guilty of wasting money by doing substandard work that has to be redone time and time and time again, they are just pouring OUR money down the drain. When it comes to Orihuela Costa, lately,

there has been a lot of propaganda being posted by various departments on how well they are performing, streets, parks, beaches etc, but these Councillors, Deputy Mayor and the Mayor himself, never learn from their mistakes, only perfecting on how to do a bad job even worse. Right now the coast is becoming a serious health hazard, there is a great example in Campoamor with live cables being exposed with an estimated 20,000

Can we allow the Council to continue wasting our taxes that we all pay for services that are totally inadequate and discriminatory to everyone living in Orihuela Costa. We owe it to our children and future generations to campaign for the services and cultural events that are held in every town and village in Spain, including Orihuela city and surrounding villages, but not here in Orihuela Costa. We can campaign together, by joining Partido Independencia Orihuela Costa (PIOC) and vote at the next local elections in May 2023. Peter Houghton

Is Line of Duty's Gregory Piper set for Strictly Line of Duty's Gregory Piper - who plays OCG member and corrupt police officer Ryan Pilkington - is reportedly being lined-up for Strictly Come Dancing 2021. The 23-year-old actor appeared in the first series of Jed Mercurio's police procedural as vulnerable teenager groomed by the organised crime syndicate, who has since graduated as a police officer, stationed at Hillside Lane. He's wormed his way into the investigation of the murder of Gail Vella, an high-profile journalist who is believed to have uncovered police corruption within the OCG, and as a result was shot dead outside her home in Kingsgate. It's being reported that Strictly bosses are keen to sign Gregory up for the upcoming series, as the young star is now "a household name because of his turn as evil Ryan", UK tabloids claim. Strictly recently confirmed the line-up of professional dancers returning to the show, which include Oti Mabuse, Aljaž Škorjanec, Amy Dowden, Anton Du Beke, Dianne Buswell, Giovanni Pernice, Gorka Marquez, Graziano Di Prima, Janette Manrara, Johannes Radebe, Karen Hauer, Katya Jones, Luba Mushtuk, Nadiya Bychkova, Nancy Xu, and Neil Jones. The judges haven't been confirmed yet, but viewers are expecting to see Shirley Ballas, Craig Revel-Horwood, Motsi Mabuse and Bruno Tonioli back on the panel. Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman are returning to host the show. Fans will have to wait a little longer until the celebrity contestants are unveiled. Strictly Come Dancing returns this autumn.

This Week´s Movie Picks Skyfall Assassin´s Creed Saturday 1st May – Channel 4, 10.00 pm

Sunday 2nd May – ITV, 9.00 pm

Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar de Nerha, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.

When James Bond's (Daniel Craig's) latest assignment goes gravely wrong and Agents around the world are exposed, MI6 is attacked, forcing (M Dame Judi Dench) to relocate the agency. These events cause her authority and position to be challenged by Gareth Mallory (Ralph Fiennes), the new Chairman of the Intelligence and Security Committee. With MI6 now compromised from both inside and out, M is left with one ally she can trust: Bond. 007 takes to the shadows, aided only by field agent, Miss Eve Moneypenny (Naomie Harris), following a trail to the mysterious Tiago Rodriguez, a.k.a. Raoul Silva (Javier Bardem), whose lethal and hidden motives have yet to reveal themselves.

between Daphne Bridgerton, played by Phoebe Dynevor, and Simon Bassett, played by Regé-Jean Page, it was revealed that Nicola was the voice behind gossip writer Lady Whistledown. And Kim was just as shocked as the millions of fans of the show after it was announced last month that the steamy Duke would not be returning for the second series. Producers announced that the popular period drama was renewed for season two in January and has successfully commissioned for a further two series.

Virtual Dog Walk to raise money for guide dogs Dog lovers on the Costa Blanca are being encouraged to grab their leads and put on their walking boots to join hundreds of other people in a virtual walk for charity. To celebrate International Guide Dog Day (28th April) and raise funds for the ONCE Foundation for Guide Dogs (FOPG), Specsavers Ópticas is launching itsVirtual Dog Walk 2021 initiative. Taking place between the 26th of April and the 2nd of May, this will be a chance to fund the vital work that this guide dog association does and allow dog owners to get involved with the campaignwithout concerns about social distancing and COVID-19 restrictions. Mike Stone from Specsavers Ópticas in Javea and Calpe explains, ‘Due to the pandemic, we have sadly been unable to plan any big public events this past year to support our national chosen charity, the ONCE Foundation for Guide Dogs (FOPG). However, we are not going to be defeated by lockdown restrictions and have an exciting new campaign to raise vital funds for the charity - a virtual dog walk. To put it simply, members of the public will be encouraged to walk their chosen distance with (or without) their dog and

help raise money for FOPG. All they need to do is donate a minimum of 5€ to the charity in their local Specsavers Ópticas store and choose a walking route and distance that suits them – along the beach, in their local park, wide open spaces or just down their local streets. It’s entirely up to them. Not only will this event raise much-needed funds for the charity, it will also increase awareness of the important work they do in breeding and training guide dogs and placing them with people with severe visual impairment in the community, enabling them to live the fullest lives possible. We have pledged to raise over 5,000€ for FOPG during 2021 and this will be an important event to help us to reach our goal and fund the training of the guide dogs, which are so essential. To participate in the Virtual Dog Walk, visit your local Specsavers Ópticas store

Specsavers Ópticas want to see participants getting involved and share the love. They’re asking you to take a picture of your dog on their walk and tag @SpecsaversOpticas on Facebook or @specsaversspain on Instagram and the best will be shared to show our support for guide dogs. To find your nearest store to make a donation visit www.specsavers.es. To find out more about FOPG visit www.perrosguias.once.es

to make a donation to FOPG and collect your Virtual Dog Walk Certificate. There are stores in Javea, Calpe, Benidorm, Torrevieja, Guardamar and La Zenia on the Costa Blanca.

About FOPG Fundación ONCE del Perro Guía (FOPG) is a welfare foundation created by ONCE in 1990 with the purpose of breeding and training guide dogs for people with severe blindness or visual impairment. It provides its services to people with visual disabilities throughout Spain, by virtue of the collaboration with ONCE itself, and offers

the guide dog as a free social service for people affiliated with that organisation who request it and are eligible. The FOPG is a permanent member of the International Guide Dog Federation (IGDF), the European Guide Dog Federation (EGDF) and the European Breeding Network, a working group specialised in the breeding and genetic improvement of guide dogs in Europe and the USA. The foundation breeds its own dogs and takes responsibility for the entire process of training the guide dog and pairing it with the most suitable applicant. They also train the new owner how to make best use of this mobility aid and supports both the owner and the dog throughout its life as a guide dog. The work of this foundation is essential to increase the autonomy of blind people or those with a serious visual disability. Changing from walking with a cane to doing it with a guide dog represents a huge improvement in their mobility, speed and security of their movements and allows them to integrate with society in a much more meaningful way. How your diet affects your mental health In 1825, French gourmet Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin wrote, in The Physiology of Taste, one of history's most famous aphorisms: Tell me what you eat and I will tell you what you are. Nearly 200 years later, this celebrated phrase remains just as relevant. Your intestines are linked directly to your brain. These organs produce 95 per cent of our serotonin, indicating that diet has a large influence on mental health. What you eat can determine whether you feel happy, sad, depressed, or downright suicidal. The Mediterranean Diet primarily includes plant-based foods, like fruit, vegetables, nuts, legumes, and whole grains. Those who follow the Mediterranean diet also eat fewer processed foods, sugar, and pastries. Many physicians and specialists recommend this diet because of the numerous health benefits it offers, such as a reduced risk of heart disease and cancer. It also has a positive effect on mental health. One study concluded that this diet can protect those who follow it from depression. In other words, it promotes improved mental health.

Eating a lot of fast food doesn't just put you at risk of gaining weight. High in trans fats, fast food changes the body's balance of omega-3 acids. Several studies have shown that people who are low in omega-3 can feel more

pessimistic, depressed, and aggressive. The ketogenic diet continues to grow in popularity, especially among those who wish to lose lots of weight. In essence, the diet encourages decreased carbohydrate consumption while increasing fat intake. A ketogenic diet can greatly benefit mental health by stimulating production of the neurotransmitter GABA, which reduces stress and anxiety and increases mental concentration.Plus, in some cases, people living with mental illnesses, such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, experience a reduction in their symptoms.

Vegans eat no animal products, including meat, milk, eggs, and cheese. While some may find veganism too restrictive, studies have revealed that this diet supports mental health. For instance, in one study, researchers discovered that vegans are happier than people who eat meat and fish, indicating that they were at a lower risk of becoming depressed. A vegan diet reduces blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and weight while increasing calcium, magnesium, potassium, and vitamin C intake. Veganism also helps alleviate anxiety and reduce stress levels. Alcohol can certainly improve your mood in the moment, making you feel more relaxed. However, if alcohol consumption is a part of your daily life, you risk suffering numerous mental health problems. Alcohol is a depressant. It modifies your brain chemistry by interfering with the neurotransmitters responsible for good mental health. Regular drinkers are at a higher risk of suffering anxiety, depression, and memory problems. There is also a link between the regular consumption of alcohol and suicide, self-harm, and psychosis.

Colin copy could lead to charity boost It looks like Aldi may have finally got in trouble for its not-so-subtle copies of iconic products. It’s been announced that Marks & Spencer has begun legal action against Aldi over its Cuthbert the Caterpillar cake. In case you hadn’t guessed, M&S believes that Cuthbert is just a smidge too similar to its iconic Colin the Caterpillar. M&S is claiming that their similarity leads consumers to believe they are of the same standard and “rides on the coat-tails” of M&S's reputation. It lodged an intellectual property claim with the High Court this week. The result M&S wants is for Aldi to remove the product from sale and agree not to sell anything similar in the future. A spokesman said: “Because we know the M&S brand is special to our customers and they expect only the very best from us, love and care goes into every M&S product on our shelves. So, we want to protect Colin, Connie and our reputation for freshness, quality, innovation and value.” After reacting to all this with some very, funny memes, Aldi is now trying to convince M&S, plus all the other supermarkets that sell caterpillar cakes to club together to raise money for charity.

Hey @marksandspencer can Colin and Cuthbert be besties? We’re bringing back a limited edition Cuthbert and want to donate profits to cancer charities including your partners @macmillancancer & ours @teenagecancer. Spanish wines top ‘World’s Most Admired’ A variety from Spain is officially the World's Most Admired Wine Brand, according to the annual survey of the same name carried out by and among the most prestigious professionals on earth. Oenologists, sommeliers, international traders, wine critics and writers are among the panel which compiles the ranking each year, with every one of them choosing and giving points to six different types based upon quality, authenticity and brand image. Often, in world wine lists, Spain is near the top and usually makes the cut somewhere in the list, but as its wines suffer from being sorely underrated and barely understood by the general public, typically lose the number one slot to brands from France, Italy, Australia and South Africa. But with the World's Most Admired Wine Brands survey, Spain has consistently hogged the top spot and is very present elsewhere in the standings. Three Spanish wines are in the top 10, and eight are in the top 50. The 'pandemic year' has been hard on wine producers – exports have not suffered, particularly to countries which produce little or no wine of their own, and a slight increase has been seen in purchases by the individual consumer, but neither has been enough to make up for long months of restrictions on bar and

restaurant operations; even when open all hours, as most were in Spain throughout last summer, social distancing necessarily meant that customer numbers were fewer, and this period was preceded and followed by complete closures in many regions. A firm with a strong market presence nationwide and also in Chile and Argentina, the Catalunya-based Família Torres has topped the ranking in previous years, so doing so this time around, although something to celebrate for the brand, was nothing new. Hailing from the province of Valladolid, Castilla y León – one of Spain's biggest wine-making regions – the iconic Vega Sicilia is the third-most admired brand on earth.

A household name in the northern region of La Rioja and well-known on a national scale, CVNE comes eighth. Between Família Torres and Vega Sicilia, the second-most admired wine brand on the planet is from Argentina, Catena, whilst numbers four to seven inclusive are Henschke (Australia), Concha yToro (Chile), Penfolds (Australia) and Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (France). Completing the top 10 behind CVNE are Antinori (Italy) and Château Musar (Lebanon). In terms of countries, France leads the field with 12 brands among the mostadmired – the only nation which beats Spain. Campo Viejo, another trademark La Rioja brand, is 32nd; Bodegas Abadal, from the province of Barcelona, 37th; Ramón Bilbao (which is based in La Rioja, not in the Bilbao area, as this refers to the merchant's name) comes in 43rd; the cavaproducing firm Raventós Cordoníu – which is, in fact, a national company made up of 16 wine merchants' nationwide in Aragón, Catalunya, La Rioja and Castilla y León and does not, therefore, represent a sole wine region, but owns more square metres of vineyard than any other firm in Europe – came in 47th, and closing the list at number 50 is La Rioja Alta.

Custody battle over pet dog A Benidorm judge will have to preside over a joint custody case of a dog, it was revealed this week. A man has filed a case against his ex partner because, he claims, she will not allow him access to the dog. The court in Benidorm will hear the case of a man who has asked for a joint custody regime for the dog. The case comes at a time when the Congress of Deputies is reforming the Civil Code in order that animals are considered as living beings and not things. Experts believe that this opens the door for courts to have to award custody, although for this case, the new Civil Code is not yet in place. The lawyer filing the case represents the owner of a dog, a white Maltese named Bimba, who he bought with his expartner. The man claims his ex does not let him see the dog. The couple also have a daughter in common, as well as another girl from a previous relationship. The dog was living in the family home during the relationship and the man claims he took care of the dog and covered any expenses relating to

her care. Since the couple's breakup in December 2019, a joint custody regime was established for the daughter they have in common. Without any judicial intervention, the couple mutually agreed to a shared ownership of the dog, making it coincide with the days that either party would have the little girl. During the first year the agreement worked well. But over time the relationship deteriorated and in February of this year, the woman is said to have refused to hand over the dog, claiming that Bimba belonged to her older daughter and that he could no longer have access to her. The man disagrees and has taken the case to court to claim the right to see his dog, demanding a shared custody regime. In the pet registry, the woman appears as the official owner of Bimba. The plaintiff claims that this registration is a mere formality as she just happened to be the one who brought the dog to be micro chipped, since on that particular day, he could not attend the appointment. The

Spanish Network for the Identification of Companion Animals only allows the registration to appear in the name of one person. At that time, the man did not see any problem with the dog being in his partner’s name because he had confidence that the ownership of the dog would be shared, without knowing that things would go wrong later. The plaintiff maintains that the situation is causing him serious moral damage by depriving him of the company of Bimba “since such is the love he professes for the dog. Not to mention that his youngest daughter does not understand why Bimba is no longer with her on the days when she lives with her father.” The lawsuit demands that coownership of the dog be established and the shared right of custody and enjoyment of the animal be declared, coinciding with the days in which the youngest daughter is with each of the ex-couple, as well as establishing a sharing of expenses such as the veterinary visits and vaccinations.

Panning is a growing online community that challenges the beauty industry’s encouragement of overconsumption of projects. Rather than simply binning unloved makeup and skincare products, Project Panners choose to start panning (finishing) the products that they already own. The term pan is a reference to the silver pan that many products come in. Online users of Reddit and other social media networks are joining Project Pans

Beauty Blogger ‘The Curated Heart’ said of Panning, “The biggest problem with beauty products is that it takes us five seconds to buy them, but it can take us anywhere from 3 months to 3 years to use them up. The project pan opens up your eyes about how much use we get from one product.”

Simple ways to reverse the clock Getting older may sometimes feel like a drag, but there are some fun and relaxing things you can do to help turn back the clock on aches, hearing loss, thinning hair, and more. Stay healthy and happy with these comforting remedies that that make you look and feel younger... Ease aches with a creamy latte When your stiff knees or creaky joints to flare up, take a moment to relax with a hot drink: Simply warm a mug of 8 ounces of coconut milk, then stir in 1⁄4 teaspoon each of cinnamon, ginger, and turmeric. A Stanford University study found that this tasty brew can cut even chronic aches by 63 percent, delivering better results than aspirin or ibuprofen. Thanks goes to the spices’ pain

killing antiinflammatory compounds and to plant fats found in coconut milk that boost the healing of strained muscles, tendons and tissues. Sharpen hearing by listening for the guitar A fun game that ensures you’ll never miss a word: Switch on some tunes and

try to home in on the lead guitar or recognize when the piano comes in. Northwestern University scientists found exercises like this improved participants’ hearing by up to 65 percent. They strengthen the brain’s ability to process what you hear, allowing you to tune into important sounds and filter out background noise. Think faster with wine and cheese Sprinkling parmesan over pasta and pouring yourself a glass of wine is a tasty way to feel younger and boost your brain power. A new 10year Iowa State University study found it’ll keep your thinking sharp as you age. When scientists analysed the diets of folks over 50, then measured their ability to think on the fly, those who enjoyed any amount of wine and cheese daily scored 27 percent higher on problem-solving exercises than those who never indulged. Researchers suggest unique compounds in cheese lower harmful inflammation in the brain, while wine improves nourishing blood flow to ward off mental blips. Halt hair loss with a rosemary massage When levels of the scalp-nourishing hormone estrogen dip, it contributes to thinning hair for 66 percent of women. The fix: Mix 5 drops of rosemary essential

oil into 1 ounce of almond oil, then massage into your scalp for 3 minutes before shampooing it out. The herb’s nutrients nourish damaged follicles and boost blood flow, and research in SKINmed found it’s as effective at

I am an older single lady, and would like to meet a decent guy. In normal times I have socialised a lot and meet lots of people, but hardly ever do I meet any ideal men. All the decent ones seem to be taken, or married. I got together with someone recently, who I'd kind of known socially for a while but he came with a lot of baggage, which I can't be doing with at my age. He was full on, and after only one date he was professing love for me, and wanted us to move in. I had not felt any chemistry for this man, although I enjoyed his company, and we were able to talk to each other well. Am I being too fussy? I've had three serious relationships in my life, and need to find someone who suits me perfectly. I have a friend who is in a similar situation, and she tells me that 'all the good ones are taken, and that there is only rubbish left out there'; her words! Dating for older people can be a minefield. We are probably over-cautious because we have had life experience and probably know the pitfalls. You say you knew this man in your wider social circle, and this is I think the best way the meet people. If you don't have any romantic feelings, it's best to be honest at the beginning. Most older people come with 'baggage', so sacrifices and tolerance sometimes need to be made; perhaps someone may view our life as having 'baggage'? But there's no harm in waiting for the right person. There's no need to 'settle' at any age. Keep socialising as much as you are able right now, and enjoy life as it is; things are hard enough without the pressure of finding the perfect partner. Love usually finds us when we least expect it to. Keep busy with hobbies and interests.

combating hair loss as the drug minoxidil. Nix muscle loss with protein this way To dodge the muscle loss that affects women by age 60, divide your protein intake throughout the day. A study in Nutrients found that getting 30 percent of your calories at each meal from protein-rich foods like eggs and chicken provides a constant source of fuel to build metabolism-revving muscle tissue. Elche CF, a Season Saving 4 Points Abbey Anglers On Tuesday the 19th of April we once again visited the El Bosquet complex at Crevillente. The Weather was set fair and 20 anglers took part fishing pegs A1 to 7 and 26 to 40. Winner on the day and no this is not last weeks report was none other than Neil McBernie. Neil is without doubt the dominant angler on this complex and draw on peg B1 he fished across up in the water on maggot to take 29.86kg of carp. Second and pegged next to him was the one arm wonder himself, Tony McMillan. Tony has been suffering from a snapped shoulder since December and due to complications he has been waiting for an operation to put it right. His shoulder is heavily strap and to watch him fish with virtually one arm is a sight to behold. He took a steady stream of carp and several large barbel all on maggot for 20.50kg. In third place, draw on the other side of the complex on peg 40 was Alan Smith. Alan fished across on pellet or down the side on bread to catch a large number of carp for

20.40kg. The pairs competition was won by Neil and Richard Wood with 38.74kg. Other section winners were Terry Brindley with 12.42kg , Terry Screen 14.26kg, Bill Reade 13.40kg and Richard King with 8.28kg. Rods N Reels The following day due to Covid injection appointments and the threat of some bad weather only 10 hardy souls attended the match. We were rewarded with possibly the best average weights we have ever had at this complex. The weather was fished in decent conditions apart from the last 2 hours were a light drizzle was present. Doing the double was theKing of El Bosquet, Neil McBernie. Drawn on peg 6 he fished maggot up in the water to take a magnificent 43.44kg of mainly carp with the odd barbel and mullet. The only blemish on his recent record was that he broke his very expensive pole with a schoolboy error by picking it up incorrectly. Second on the day was yours truly Ian Brown. Draw on the same channel on peg B1 I

fished maggot all day either up in the water or 4 inches off the bottom to catch quality carp and the odd mullet for 30.86kg. Third was Bill Reade draw on peg 35 with 21.18kg of carp caught on bread or maggot. The pairs competition was won by Neil and Steve Higgins with 63.46kg. The average weight between the ten anglers was 20.60kg so credit should be passed onto the owners for the splendid job that they have done in restocking and maintaining the complex. Next week we will be again fishing the same complex. If anyone is interested in joining any of the above clubs then please visit our website at www.abbeyanglers.es

Las Ramblas Golf Society Having played the game of golf for over 30 years now I thought I knew just about every scoring format there was. Monday however saw a new one on me! Known as Medford it involves playing the first nine holes as Stroke Play (or Medal) and the back nine as Stableford. After the number of gross strokes has been adjusted by handicap to give a net score the number of points achieved on the back is then deducted. The winner is the player with the lowest score, (a score of 19 would be attained if a player were to play exactly to his handicap) With just 12 points Mike Chapman was our winner but only after countback over Joyce McClusky. Ron Luffman was in third place with 14. Wednesday’s Stableford saw some incredibly high scoring. I managed 37 points and didn’t even get into the top six! With 41 points John Dobson came out on top. He was followed by Marja Oldenziel on 40 points which put Ron Luffman into third place again after countback. With a rollover pot for the ‘2’s competition was fierce and no less than five players qualified for one (Marja actually managed to get two ‘2’s but won nothing as she doesn’t go in it!) We also saw today the debut appearance of George Hogg who is extended a warm welcome as our latest new recruit. ‘Albert’ certainly played well in Friday’s ‘Original Counter Game’. This is the

version where you don’t know how many scores are to count until after the hole has been played. Alongside Ron Phipps, Nigel Price and Joyce McClusky he was on the winning team with 95 points. Taking second place with 93 (after countback) were John Dobson, Mike Chapman, Friedel Knebel and AnneMarie Weisheit. We received the sad news on Thursday that the clubhouse bar and restaurant would no longer be functioning under its current management. Two fixtures last week for the Franjiverdes, from which they took a vital season saving 4 points.

ball sailing directly to Olaza, who knocked it past the goalie for a goal against the run of play.

Elche had to receive Real Valladolid at the Martinez Valero as if it was a cup final, after a run of 6 games without a win, which had caused them to slip down into the relegation zone. The team had in their favour the remarkable home record of 2 wins and a draw under the new returning managership of Fran Escriba. Against them they had the disadvantage of preparation time, with Real Valladolid having enjoyed a break of 10 days against Elche's 72 hours.

The draw took Valladolid out of the relegation zone and cemented Elche into it. But the Franjiverdes did not have time to reflect, as just 3 days later they faced fellow Comunitat Valenciana side; Levante.

Elche took command from the whistle and looked strong and hungry in attack and strong and organised in defence, a great combination. Their efforts were awarded when Pere Milla crossed to an unmarked Fidel who finished the move with a goal on the 22nd minute. Elche CF continued to remain in control and it seemed that only a lapse in their concentration could gift Valladolid with an equalizer. That lapse unfortunately came in the 86th minute. From a corner Rigoni made a deflective defensive header, but managed to send the

Levante have been on a downward spiral since their cup semifinal defeat. A lapse of self doubt that Elche took full advantage of. Escriba's men had the upper-hand all the way through and managed to walk away with 3 vital points. Following a defensive error by Levante, Lucas Boye found himself unmarked with just the keeper for a defence. He confidently crossed the ball in front of the goal mouth, hitting the bottom back corner for the only goal of the match. Elche had other opportunities, one of which hit the post whilst the other was saved by Levante's goalkeeper.

Levante's horror continued when Vezo was shown a red after taking down Piatti in front of goal. The Levante players appealed (a lot!) claiming that Piatti had received the ball as a deflection from the Referee. VAR was consulted and the red annulled. In the end Levante finished with just 10 men as they had thrown all of their substitutes into the game, only for Dani Gomez to be injured. It made no difference as the script had already been written, and it allows Elche to breath as they slip out of the relegation zone. Elche CF hope to maintain their home record of no losses under Escriba on Saturday the 1st May, when they will take on top of the table Atletico Madrid at 16:15. As soon as spectators are allowed back into the stadiums, EuroTourGuide will once again be offering Coach Tours with Match Tickets to support Elche CF. England defeat France to defend women’s six nations title England secured a third consecutive Women’s Six Nations title as Simon Middleton’s side held off a second-half France fightback to triumph 10-6 at the Twickenham Stoop. A first-half try from Poppy Cleall, converted by Emily Scarratt, on the cusp of half-time proved to be enough for the Red Roses to seal an eighth straight win over Les Bleues. A couple of penalties from Caroline Drouin piled the pressure on the defending champions after the interval as France attempted to regain the crown

they last clinched in 2018. But a late penalty from Scarratt, who had missed a couple of penalties in the first half, ensured England got over the line again and confirmed a hat-trick of Championship titles. In a low-scoring match, defence was king and no player embodied England’s resilience when under pressure better than Zoe Aldcroft - the deserved Women's Six Nations Player of the Match. Scotland wrapped up fifth place in the 2021 Women’s Six Nations with a bonuspoint 27-20 victory over Wales as the

Well Hi everyone and welcome to the first of what I hope will be a regular column on the motor bike world. I hope to include something for all bikers but in the racing season I will be concentrating on that as I’m a big fan, hope you are too. I will cover other aspects of biking so let me know what you’d like to see via my email at the end of the piece. The big (and I mean massive) news in MotoGP is the return of the one and only Marc Marquez who lined up in Portimaofor the Grande Premio de Portugal. At the ripe old age of 28 Marc is already an 8 time world champion, 6 of these in the elite class. Not to take anything from Joan Mir’s success last year on the Suzuki but we’ll all wonder what if…. won’t we?My favourite Marquez comment is from MotoGP doctor Claudio Costa. After declaring his love for Marc he went on to say ”…the wound lasted

months, it is the wound of a hero, psychologically he will have the strength of a hero”. That’s the effect he has on people, amazing. Marc managed 7th which was a fantastic achievement after what he’s been through. If he can stay Marquez in tears in his garage at the end of the race. fit he’ll be in the mix at It was all a bit too much for him. Bless. the end I’m sure but at Next stop Jerez at the end of April. With the moment it’s the Yamahas that are 2 weeks to get stronger can Marquez flying having won all 3 races.Fabio challenge the flying Frenchman Qartararo followed up his win at the 2nd Quartararo? Will the Yamaha domination Qatar race with the topof the podium in continue? I can’t wait. Portimao. He now heads the standings Any feedback or suggestions (polite on 61 points from Francesco Bagnaia on ones only) by email at 46 and Maverick Viñales who won the 1st jacknottim@gmail.com Qatar on 41. TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Editor: “Don’t forget to keep the word count to around 1250 words, please. You know the readers don’t want too much of your drivel”. Well, it’s a bit of luck not much has happened since the last time I scribbled my drivel for you then, isn’t it? Let’s be honest, we could probably do twice that just on the events of 23:23 Sunday through to about 19:16 Tuesday - otherwise known as the rise, fall and death of the European Super League. Oh, and Jose got the boot. And Mr Ed quit. And fans, all over the world, patted themselves on the back for a job well done as if the owners of those clubs had actually listened and reacted to their outrage.

with a way of milking the football cash cow dry in a different way to how they planned to milk it dry themselves. And then they started to crumble Chelsea first, then City. Then United and Liverpool. Sure, Arsenal and Spurs hung around for as long as they could in the hope they might actually win something just by being there. Then the Italians and Atletico Madrid quite too - meaning only Barca and Real were standing. It was “over” except it wasn’t - it’s been paused folks, and there’ll be more fallout to come over all this. Uefa will hammer it as hard as they can, secretly relieved that their almost-as-awful plan for revamping

Rumours were swirling that Mourinho had refused to take the players out to train in protest at the ESL news. These rumours were false, it was purely that Jose was doing a terrible job and that football had moved on. I think I apologised for getting it wrong about him in-andaround December. Turns out that I was wrong about that and right about the fact he’s yesterday’s man. A very rich yesterday’s man.

and it bounced up from approximately 15 centimetres and touched Wilson’s arm before he got the ball over the line. Don’t blame VAR for this one, blame the lawmakers.

Ma-Son got off to a good start against Southampton. We now have a Premier League manager born in the 1990s as Class of 92’s Ryan Mason takes temporary charge of Spurs - and his half-time team talk saw the side come back from 1-0 down to win 2-1 against Southampton.

According to Jorginho, Frank Lampard was a club legend and all that but wasn’t ready to manage the club. Goalkeeper Edouard Mendy feels that Tommy Tuchel has transformed the club’s ability to defend. All that Tuchel love meant that there could only be one winner against West Ham and so it was - Timo Werner of all people slipping home the winner. Controversy didn’t pass the game by completely, however Fabian Balbuena was sent off for kicking a ball, slipping, and catching Ben Chilwell with his follow-through. Even though the ref saw it perfectly the first time, those ‘above’ suggested he should have a look on the video and you know what happens next the Moysiah called the decision “rank and rotten” and you can only be grateful it wasn’t Roy Hodgson uttering that statement in disgust.

Personally, if I was to launch a plan to take over the world, I’d probably do it late on a Sunday too. After all, there’s always a chance the news might get missed, right? Given the collective intelligence of the people behind the grand plan, that might have been part of their ploy. For anyone that has been living under a rock for the last seven days in football and who, frankly, could blame you if you had - twelves football club owners got together and decided that they wanted more of their cake and wanted to eat it as well. That took the form of “The Super League”, a new breakaway competition where 12 teams (including United, City, Liverpool, Chelsea and - try not to laugh - Spurs and Arsenal) would be in there with eight others and could not be relegated no matter how bad they were and would still qualify no matter how badly they performed in the Premier League. Which they still wanted to be part of, you understand. This was much more a two-fingers up at Uefa than the Premier League. City, Chelsea and Real Madrid were to be kicked out of the Champions League meaning Neymar and Mbappe would be celebrating PSG’s first title by default. West Ham were not sure whether they should be celebrating or commiserating - were they or Leicester now the Premier League champions-elect? And Wolves awarded themselves the title from two seasons ago. Gary Neville nearly self-combusted as the realisation that rich men are typically in things for the money. The football world united at pace to condemn these greedy men wanting even more and a plan that was certain to bring the end to football as a credible sport - you know, just like football died when the Premier League was invented and the European Cup became the Champions League. Fans were up in arms, players and coaches furious at the expectation of playing even more matches. Uefa went loopy over another organisation coming up

the Champions League now looks half-decent (if you compare it to the ESL). There’s still talk of the clubs being punished, though nobody really knows how. And really, given the state of everything else in the world does it really matter? Even if it did, where were these voices when the bad men owners took over their clubs promising to deliver global superstars and silverware? It didn’t seem to bother people that much back then, did it? Let’s look at the positives - it’s led to Ed Woodward calling it a day at Old Trafford. It’s shown that if there is an issue big enough, people will get together and kick up a fuss. Just a shame none of the actually important issues of the day get such traction, eh? I’m still not convinced that it wasn’t all a ploy for Daniel Levy to sack Jose Mourinho in the hope it got lost in the furore. It didn’t, Daniel - we are coming on to that. The biggest crime in all of this, though - nobody asked the Dulux dog what he thought of it all. Back to Jose - £25m he’s getting for failing at Spurs. 17 months or so, a very brief flirtation with a title-bid before regressing to his mean. And boy, was he mean. Given how much Jose loved totting up the little trophies to inflate his overall career haul, he’ll be fuming at the fact he wasn’t leading Tottenham out at Wembley, even if defeat was pretty much guaranteed.

We’ll leave the potential new manager chat for another day. Ed Woodward is going to go full Sir Alex at Old Trafford and choose his replacement - United really never learn, do they? Bruno won’t be signing a new deal until Pogba does. That’s how much they love each other now. Leeds, having set the moral tone against Liverpool, took a point off United meaning they are currently unbeaten against any of the ESL founding clubs. If there was one club guaranteed to keep the blunders coming until much later in the week, it was Arsenal. Bernd Leno managed to tuck home Richarlison’s cross in a hilarious manner, keeping Everton interested in the top four finish that might still mean something. Post-match, it emerged that the Spotify CEO was interested in taking the club off the hands of the Kroenkes - something that you wonder if football fans had cottoned on to. It’s all very well wanting these billionaire owners out of your club, but the only people that can afford to buy them now are other billionaires who might know even less about football. Liverpool took to the field for the second time since the ESL news broke and ended up with exactly the same result as against Leeds - minus the tshirts, that is. That said, Newcastle can probably feel a little disappointed not to have pinched all three points given how much of a farce the handball law is. Callum Wilson bundled his way towards goal, Alisson blocked the ball

Newcastle bounced back instantly, Joe Willock scoring once again - King Klopp admitted that the ESL might actually be a good idea after all as at least they’d qualify for that even playing like this.

At Wembley, 8,000 fans suffered a match that both the owners of City and Spurs would happily do away with in an ESL future. Mind you, given how bad a game it was they might have a point. Ryan Mason need not have worried too much about Harry Kane’s fitness given he wasn’t really needed in the first 45 minutes. Spurs managed to restrict City to just three shots on target in the 80 minutes before conceding something Jose would have loved, of course. Not that they’d have done that for Mourinho, you understand. Tottenham would have scored early, sat back and then eventually conceded twice in the last ten minutes. Instead, the goal came from a set piece - something that would have never happened on Jose’s watch. Oh. Should Laporte have been on the pitch? Probably not, but it would have been very unfortunate to have picked up a second yellow for stopping Tottenham’s only first-half counter. Wolves slumped to a 4-0 home defeat against Burnley. It’s quite difficult to play football with your flip flops on, you know. Nuno had already ruled himself out of the Spurs running, but made double sure with this result. Brighton could have also started to plan their holidays, but a 1-0 defeat to Sheffield United - such a Brighton game to lose - means they are not safe in the mathematical sense just yet and these league tables do get judged in a mathematical sense. Well, until that lot get their way. 1600 words. I’ll be getting my ‘Daniel Levy call’ on Monday without the payoff. It’s been nice knowing you. Maybe I’ll have to release a video apology taking all the blame.
