State of Alarm ends Life is slowly returning to normal and with the State of Alarm ending in Spain on Sunday, changes were immediately evident on the Costa Blanca and across Spain. In Madrid, Barcelona and other cities, police had to intervene to break up large street parties which took place at midnight on Saturday to mark the end of

the State of Alarm. At a local level, big changes were seen on Sunday across the Valencian Community as the curfew extended to midnight and bigger groups were allowed to meet. After six months of tight restrictions on movement and socialising, Sunday marked a day where many people

resumed their social lives as groups of ten were allowed to meet, and bars and restaurants could open later than before, with closing time extended to 11.30pm. In addition, the perimeter closure of the Valencian Community was lifted so for

many, this meant being able to see friends and family members from whom they had been kept apart for months. People from other parts of Spain with holiday homes on the Costa Blanca were also able to travel here at last. Local restaurant owners have expressed relief at the extension of opening hours and hope to see a return to normal levels of business soon. Many also welcomed the end of the perimeter closure saying that customers from Madrid and other parts of Spain have been sorely missed, especially over Easter and early summer. The extension of the curfew and closing time has been a relief for customers too, with many remarking that

they felt at ease to enjoy their evening and weren’t watching the clock, in fear of losing track of time and arriving home after the 10pm curfew. The new measures came into force on May 9th and remain in place for fifteen days when they will be reviewed again by the Generalitat Valenciana.

Torrevieja Friday market back at full capacity Due to the pandemic, the number of stalls allowed to operate at Torrevieja’s popular Friday market was halved. Only 220 stallholders of the usual 500 or so were allowed to do business at the weekly open air market. The announcement was made by Councillor for Markets, Antonio Vidal, who revealed that last Friday’s market (May 7th) would be allowed to boast 100% of the stalls.

From this week, there will be more than 480 stalls offering the usual selection of fruit and vegetables, clothing, gift items, toys, electronics and more. Members of the Torrevieja Local Police and Civil Protection will be on site to ensure that all the safety and hygiene measures necessary for the safe functioning of the market are respected.

Market users can also be benefit from the new bus stop, relocated last month to be nearer to the pedestrian entrance of the market.

Fiestas could resume in September President of the Valencian Government Ximo Puig has assured that local and patronal fiestas could be celebrated as soon as September. The president trusts that by the end of the summer, 70% of the population will have been vaccinated. Puig remarked during an interview on Antena 3 that the level of vaccination that will be reached by September will be enough to allow the celebration of regional and patron saint festivities.

Local Waste Management Plan meeting The last session of public consultation for the Local Waste Management Plan was held in Orihuela Costa on Thursday. Organised by the City Council, the seminars hosted by the Department of Street Cleaning for Orihuela, have now concluded. These meetings were held to discuss the needs of the community and how these can best be implemented going forward. The coastal meeting saw a high attendance, with representatives of associations and local residents highlighting just how important and emotive this issue is to those living in the area. The main conclusions drawn from the surveys carried out are that almost half of the participants (49 percent) consider that the service is bad; 81 percent voted yes to a change of service and more than half (65 percent) raised the need for an eco-park; 43 percent believe sanctions are necessary for those who do not recycle and the rest want a reduction in the rate in line with the amount generated. In addition, other measures voiced by those surveyed are the implementation of community compost bins, door-to-door collection (55 percent), a container return system and a greater number of containers. participants voted for the implementation of the payment for waste generation and would be interested in a composting program. Citizens propose greater training on waste management through all channels and reinforcement of the posters in the collection areas, all this together with public awareness and information campaigns. The councillor for Street Cleaning, Dámaso Aparicio, said that “thanks to citizen participation and technical reports, we will be able to develop an ideal PLR for the municipality. We have been talking about

rubbish collection without any problems and in order to arrive at a new model of waste management in Orihuela, complying with the objective set by the Comprehensive Waste Plan of the Valencian Community (PIRCVA). I greatly appreciate the participation of the neighbours, because of who, we now know more about what the demand is and what we must change”. Valencian Government to appeal to British ambassador The Valencian Government is set to appeal to British ambassador to include the Valencian Community as a safe destination. As news emerged that Spain is not on the UK’s Green travel list (see more on page 14 of this week’s Costa Blanca People), the Valencian Government revealed it would meet with the British ambassador with a view to including the region as a safe destination. The president of the Generalitat Valenciana, Ximo Puig, described the news that the UK had left Spain off the list of safe travel destinations as "very negative". At the same time, he has announced a meeting with the British Ambassador to try to make the British government change its position. “We will do everything possible to make the English authorities

understand that they have to discern,” said Ximo Puig, interviewed on Antena 3. The president of the Generalitat insists that "the Costa Blanca is an important and safe destination in these moments, so we would like to reconsider... ” the position of the United Kingdom. "We hope to reach an agreement" said the president.

New speed limits from today At the end of 2020, the DGT published a broad reform of the Traffic Law that aimed to improve the road safety on national highways. A series of changes that were approved shortly after, but are gradually coming into effect. This will happen with one of the most profound changes: these are the three new speed limits that come into force this week, specifically on Tuesday May 11. The landscape of many cities will change this week, especially those that, until now, have not lowered the speed limits on their streets. The changes were announced some months ago as the General Directorate of Traffic wanted an adjustment period so that the various localities could adapt their signage and we as motorists all have time to adapt and know the new regulations. Until now, the generic speed limit in cities was set at 50 kilometres per hour. As of May 11, this figure will be reserved for high-capacity roads that have two or more lanes for each direction, such as the CV-905 in Torrevieja which saw the speed limit reduced not too long ago. With the aim of eradicating

mortality rates in urban traffic accidents and avoiding both accidents and their consequences, two new limitations are being introduced: 30 kilometres per hour and 20 kilometres per hour, depending on the street. 30 kilometres per hour This is the limit chosen for roads that have a single lane in each direction, which is already being applied in many Spanish towns and cities. It should be noted that the areas reserved for certain vehicles or users (such as those for public transport) are not counted. 20 kilometres per hour This new limit will be the one that regulates traffic on single-platform roads, that is, those streets in which the

sidewalk and the road are unified and, therefore, pedestrians and vehicles share space although the preference is always pedestrians. Sanctions The penalties, consequently, will also change: driving over the speed limit will be considered a serious offence that will be punished with a fine of 100 euro without loss of points on the driving licence. Driving at excessive speed will result in higher fines and the loss of points. Adapting limits Finally, it must be borne in mind that the town councils will have the power to reduce these new generic speeds if they consider it necessary and provided that, prior to making a change, they install signage that announces a different speed limit. To this must be added that, in some exceptional cases, the speed may be increased up to 50 kilometres per hour on roads with a single lane in each direction. Mark Nolan, N332

Four arrested for human trafficking and exploitation Four people have been arrested, accused of human trafficking and exploitation in the Alicante region. Guardia Civil in both Alicante and Almería worked together on the operation which began after two women managed to escape from a house where they had been confined. They fled from Alicante to Almería, alerted the Guardia Civil there and the investigation began. At the beginning of October 2019, two women flagged down a Guardia Civil patrol on a public highway in the holiday town of Roquetas de Mar (Almería). They told the officers that they had been tricked into coming to Spain, specifically to the Alicante area, where they had been victims of sexual exploitation until they managed to flee to Almería. Given the seriousness of the accusations, a joint investigation was initiated by Guardia Civil in both areas. The investigation determined that the women, of Venezuelan nationality, had been brought to Spain by a Spanish couple living in Alicante. This couple, who run a restaurant in the province of Alicante, had created a travel agency with the sole purpose of being able to

bring women from different Latin American countries without raising suspicions. They had previously contacted the women, all of whom had fled their countries of origin due to situations of extreme poverty. The women were told that the agency would bear all the expenses of the trip, and that that amount would have to be repaid later by working as prostitutes in Spain in establishments run by the couple. To those who agreed to the terms, they were sent plane tickets to travel to Madrid’s Barajas airport. They were also given instructions on how to pass through immigration control at the airport: they were sent return tickets (although the return trip was never going to be used) and were told to state that they were visiting Spain as tourists. Upon arrival in Spain, they were brought to a house in Alicante, where they were informed that they had incurred a debt of between 1,500 and 2,300 euro. They were told they would be allowed to go free when the debt was paid in full. They did not have access to their money as their pimps would arrange payment from

the clients. Since the women had no money of their own, the pimps also looked after day to day expenses such as food and clothing although all of these charges were added to the total debt. Problems began when a new partner joined the prostitution business. He took all the keys to the house where the women lived and worked, and told them they would have to ask permission from him to leave the house and even then, they were only allowed out individually for short walks. As well as that, he began to advertise certain services websites without their knowledge or consent. This led the women refusing to carry out certain services, and clients complained, saying that said services had been advertised. The bosses began to threaten the women, saying if they would not perform certain acts, they could not compete with other prostitution rings in the area. The pimps took advantage of the vulnerable situation of the victims, who were alone in a country where they did not know anyone and did not have any financial resources of their own.

Brit dies as plane Orihuela authorises its crashes off first beach for dogs Cartagena coast A British man has died after crashing into the sea off a Spanish beach in his light aircraft. The 66-year-old was killed instantly after his plane plunged into the water soon after he took off from a small airdrome in Murcia called Aeroclub Totana. The man who has been named locally only by his first name of Paul, is said to have lost control of his plane and crashed off Descargador Beach near Cala Reona close to the naval port city of Cartagena. The fatal accident happened around 11.30am Saturday morning. Unconfirmed local reports said the dead man had been performing acrobatic stunts before he crashed in thick fog. Locals practising water sports including a canoeist pulled his body from the sea and a pleasure boat took it to a nearby port. Coastguard divers and police searched the area to rule out any more victims before it was confirmed the expat was on his own in the plane. An investigation into the tragedy is now underway pending the autopsy results. Cartagena Mayor Ana Belen Castejon wrote on Twitter: ‘My sincere condolences to the friends and loved ones of the man who has died. ‘Sadly nothing could be done to save his life.’ Luis Martinez Escudero, one of the men who helped pull the man’s body

from the sea, told a local paper: “We saw a body floating face down in the water five minutes after the plane came down. I put the body on the longboard I was on with the help of a canoeist who also headed to the same spot. We then transferred the dead man into a boat that turned up and took him to a nearby port.’ He also described weather conditions at the time as ‘extremely foggy.’ Another pilot who left the aerodrome shortly before the Brit who lost his life is understood to have complained about low clouds. A spokesman for a regional government-run emergency response coordination centre said: “We can confirm the death of a man aged 66 who suffered a light aircraft accident in Cala Reona in the municipality of Cartagena.”

The Councillor for Beaches for Orihuela, Luisa Boné, authorised the coasts first Dog beach at Cala Cabo Peñas, better known to all as Cala Mosca. Orihuela has possibly the best set of beaches and coves on the entire Mediterranean coast, holding several different awards to mark their quality and now our four-legged family members can enjoy one too. Councillor Boné said: “From today the high number of citizens who had been asking to have a beach on the Oriola coast where they can go together with their pet to enjoy it, are being granted their request. In addition, it is no longer enough to offer that traditional sun and beach tourism, we must offer - in addition to the strategic asset we have of excellent quality sea and sand – specialist beaches such as Surfing in Cala Cerrada. For this reason, having a beach for the enjoyment and leisure of people

accompanied by their pets responds to a specific demand and will enhance our economic tourism activity.” The Councillor said she informed the managing body of the beach service about two months ago of her intention to have a dedicated beach for dogs and once the file was opened, the mandatory municipal reports were requested from the relevant services within the Beach Management System: Citizen Safety, Environment, Urban Cleaning, Infrastructures, Emergencies and Tourism, all of which were favourable. A poster will be placed at the access point to the beach where all the rules that regulate the access and stay of dogs will be listed in two languages (Spanish and English) and with pictograms to facilitate understanding. Among which will be the obligation to collect your dogs poop in a bag and deposit it in the bins provided, potentially dangerous

dogs must wear a muzzle and be restrained at all times, the owners must also carry a health passport and carry a microchip for the animal and respect both the flora and fauna of the environment. Luisa Boné took the opportunity to explain that her time at the Department of Beaches will be very short, “I assumed responsibility around two months ago exceptionally and temporarily due to the terrible loss of our colleague Ramón and in the next plenary session in May another colleague, Antonio Sánchez, will take office and assume responsibility. I wanted to take advantage of my brief stint at the council to finalize the dog beach, something that was pending for me during the last legislature. I now consider that we have fulfilled our commitment to local residents with the legalisation of a beach for dogs in Orihuela Costa.”

Court dismisses case against covid ‘bleach cure’ dad A Costa Blanca court has dismissed a case against a man who was alleged to have given his children water and bleach to drink as an anti covid measure. The case was brought to court by the children’s mother who claimed that her ex husband gave the children, aged 8 and 12, a bleach and water mix to drink. The case was dismissed by the judge and now the father is planning to resume his visitation rights to the children, which had been revoked as a precaution in October last year when the case was first brought to court. Donald Trump and others had popularized the use of chlorine dioxide against the coronavirus. The Spanish Medicines Agency warned of the health risk associated with consumption of bleach but the father’s defence lawyer maintained that it has been demonstrated that “chlorine dioxide is not toxic or dangerous, as long as it is applied diligently.” According to the Calpe lawyer, the mother learned from her two children and from her ex-husband himself that they drank water with chlorine dioxide and so, she decided to report him on the grounds that he endangered them and failed to comply with their “legal duties of care inherent to the custody". In the complaint filed at court,

the mother provided an emergency report from the Hospital where her daughter had been treated. Despite the fact that examination and laboratory tests did not indicate a serious illness, the hospital report did refer to “toxic ingestion” as the main diagnosis and “ingestion of chlorine dioxide” as a secondary diagnosis. The defence claimed it surprising that the hospital gave this diagnosis, when the same medical report contained a toxicity analysis with normal values, in addition to indicating that the children “had good appearance, adequate coloration, good peripheral perfusion and good temperature, among other observations.” The father explained in court that he mixed a milligram of chlorine dioxide for each litre of water and that he began to do it for protection against covid and in order to neutralize "components such as microorganisms,

pathogens and heavy metals, among others." The judge asked the Institute of Legal Medicine (IML) of Valencia for a report and a forensic doctor concluded that there was no injury to the minors after the ingestion of chlorine dioxide. The IML report also highlighted that chlorine dioxide "has been used by some doctors as a treatment for viral infections, such as malaria or covid." The specialist pointed out that poorly administered chlorine dioxide "could cause irritation to the mucous membranes, ruling out that it had occurred in this case." The court therefore ruled out any crime of injuring or abandonment and ruled out "any indication of criminality in the conduct of the investigated."

Spain plans to introduce tolls The Spanish government is planning to introduce “a payment mechanism” on the country’s high-capacity roads beginning in 2024, according to the national recovery plan that Spain has sent to the European Commission in Brussels. Drivers would pay to use the network of autopistas (highways that charge a toll, although some have partially been made toll-free in recent years) and autovías (high-speed motorways that are free of charge). The plan furthermore opens the door to charging a fee on other national and regional roads. So far, the Spanish government had been moving in the opposite direction, making some sections of the AP-7, AP-4 and AP-1 highways tollfree after concessions expired. According to the plan, which seeks to adapt to the EU’s principle of “polluters pay,” tolls would first be charged on the 12,000 kilometres of state-run highcapacity roads, which include autopistas and autovías, and the model would later be scaled up to the 14,000 kilometres of national single-lane roads that are part of the state’s infrastructure. The government would also open negotiations with regional authorities to introduce the system in high-capacity roads controlled by the latter, according to the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan sent to Brussels by the government of Pedro Sánchez, of the Socialist Party (PSOE). Sources at the Transportation Ministry said that the project only targets highcapacity roads, not local ones. They added that Spain’s proposal is part of a wider plan to converge with the rest of Europe,

where the largest economies have extended tolls to many of their motorways. The same sources said that the plan will not be rolled out for now due to the economic crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic. They also insisted that the measures will only be implemented with political consensus and hand in hand with the transportation sector. Despite recent statements by members of the executive, the plan appears to target all road users, including passenger cars and trucks, and regardless of nationality. The plan suggests offering discounts to “financially underprivileged groups or regular road users on certain road sections.” As for transportation professionals, the government has pledged to seek payment formulas that would place the financial burden on the freight contractor, not the truck driver. Aware that this will be a very unpopular measure, the government is planning an awareness campaign aimed at the transportation sector and the general population. The executive argues that Spain has the most extensive highcapacity road network in Europe, and that growing maintenance costs cannot be covered directly by the national budget. Pere Navarro, the head of Spain’s traffic authority DGT, told the Senate that there would be exceptions to the payment rule. “When you introduce a toll of any kind, normally you exclude a few cases such as daily travel for work purposes.” Asked by Popular Party (PP) politician José Julián

Gregorio whether senior citizens going to the doctor would also have to pay, Navarro replied: “It could perfectly be added that when grandma goes to the doctor, she does not have to pay either.” The PP politician noted that “in many Spanish villages, the only way out of town is the autovía.” He asked the government to reconsider a measure that, he said, will make a lot of people take less safe roads in order to save money. The executive said that the fees will be “affordable, but enough to guarantee financing.” The exact amounts have not been specified, although industry associations have offered some ballpark figures. The infrastructure maintenance association Acex said that a fee of €0.03 to €0.05 per kilometre on average would be enough to end the €8 billion deficit the government has racked up on road maintenance. And the construction company industry association Seopan, which supports the idea of a fee, has suggested €0.03 per kilometre for light vehicles, and €0.14 for heavy vehicles. In a hypothetical scenario of €0.04 per kilometer, motorists travelling from Madrid would pay €9 to drive to Burgos, €12 to Zaragoza, around €14 to Valencia, €15 to Córdoba, €16 to Badajoz and €22 to A Coruña.

Around Europe Unlike other proposals sent to Brussels, the road-fee system is more than a document: it is a legislative bill that is already at the draft stage and affects several ministries. A draft is expected to reach the Cabinet for first reading in the first half of this year, and could be approved in the second half. If so, the law could go into effect in 2024. Following the financial crisis of 2008, neighbouring Portugal introduced tolls in its entire high-capacity road network, for both light and heavy vehicles. In France and Italy, tolls are the norm on the highways, whereas in Germany they are free of charge. But no European country charges a fee on single-lane roads.

Until now, the Sánchez administration had been moving in the opposite direction: it did not renew several expiring concession contracts, ending toll collection on the Burgos-Armiñón section of the AP-1 highway in December 2018, the Tarragona-Alicante section of the AP-7 in January 2020, and the SevilleCádiz section of the AP-4 on the same date. Tolls are also expected to end in late August on the Barcelona-La Junquera section of the AP-7, and on the ZaragozaMediterráneo section of the AP-2. This represents over 1,000 kilometres of newly freed up roads. The state has also bailed out eight other turnpikes – including Madrid’s radial roads – that went under in recent years.

When the time comes to receiving an offer on your property, preparation is definitely key to being able to move forward swiftly. Time kills all deals. The longer it takes you to accept an offer, you’ll risk your buyer making an offer on another property. So what do you do if your first offer is lower than you’d have liked? Don’t automatically disregard it just because it’s the first offer that you’ve received! Many people tend to think the second offer will be better. This is not guaran-teed. In fact, we’ve always found the first offer to be the best one! You never know when the next offer will even come along. Sometimes holding out for a figure that you have in your head, could cost you a sale in the long run. Here are 3 reasons why you should accept the

first offer: 1. When properties remain unsold buyers assume something’s wrong with it. You don’t want the property sitting on the market longer than it should be, losing value. This could negatively influence a buyers offer. 2. If you’re ready to move on, you need to consider your first offer with care. If it means you can move forward with your next purchase, then accepting the first offer is definitely the way to go. Who knows when your next offer will be forthcoming. Knowing the property is sold will give you the peace of mind you need to be able to plan your future with certainty. 3. Sometimes an offer is more than just about the money. It’s about timing and how smooth the transaction could be. Seriously consider that first offer, especially if it could work with your timescale. Treat your first offer with care. Safe Investments with High Returns? To be perfectly transparent, no investment is 100% safe from all risk. Because of fluctuating markets and a sometimes unpredictable economy, it’s hard to say which single investment is the safest. However, there are some investment categories that are much safer than others. Deciding where and how to invest money to get good returns in 2021 should be based on your short-term and long-term financial goals, timeframe, tolerance to risk, and how much money you currently have in the bank. These individual factors should make it easier to determine where to safely invest your money

while still earning returns that will help you reach your financial goals and build lasting wealth. As fully independent advisers, the Seagate team has access to a huge variety of funds that can give high returns for those who want a little spice in their investments whilst understanding the peaks and troughs associated with this type of investing. Costa Blanca man arrested for planting webcam in neighbour’s bathroom A Costa Blanca man has been sent to prison, accused of installing a mini spy camera in his neighbour’s bathroom. The suspect had offered to fix a light fixture in his neighbour’s bathroom in Dénia. He took the opportunity to install a hidden surveillance camera inside the light. National Police officers arrested the 42-year-old man of Spanish nationality, now accused of the crimes of discovery and disclosure of secrets, sexual abuse of minors and production of child pornography. An investigation began after a complaint by a young woman who went to the National Police Station to inform officers she had discovered, in the false ceiling of her bathroom, a surveillance camera hidden in a small hole next to the light fixture. According to the victim, months ago one of the lights in that bathroom had broken and one of her neighbours offered to repair it for her. To carry out the repair, the complainant left the neighbour with the keys to her home, a moment that he allegedly took advantage of to install a mini spy camera in the false ceiling of the bathroom. Based on the statements made

by the victim, officers asked the court for a warrant to carry out a search at her home where sure enough they found a mini camera in the bathroom. Officers from the Technological Crimes Brigade, specialists in the analysis and study of computer devices, collaborated in the operation. During the investigation, police officers located videos allegedly related to the victim, as well as numerous files of paedophile content, some of which had allegedly been produced by the perpetrator himself. After the man was arrested, officers continued with the

investigation and identified more victims, locating another "mini spy camera" also placed in a bathroom of another home where the man had previously lived. The man has been remanded in custody and will await trial in prison.

Covid deaths in April fall to lowest point since last summer The Spanish Health Ministry recorded 2,757 Covid-19 deaths in April, the lowest monthly figure since last September. While the pandemic continues to take a heavy toll on the country, the rollout of Covid-19 vaccines is prompting optimism. As more than eight million doses were administered in April, the number of daily fatalities fell from around 200 in March to 90. Although the exact number of daily deaths will not be known until the Carlos III Health Institute consolidates the data – a process that usually takes three weeks – the downward trend is clear. A similar number of daily fatalities has not been recorded either by the Health Ministry or the regions since last summer. Regions that were hit hard by the third wave, such as Valencia, the Balearic Islands and Asturias, recorded half the number of deaths in April as in March. But in Navarre, Aragón and the Basque Country more fatalities were reported in April than the previous month. Despite this, the data shows a clear difference with the first months of 2020. “The transmission of the virus continues to be elevated, but the majority of the most vulnerable groups are protected thanks to the vaccines,” says José

Luis Alfonso, professor of preventive medicine and public health at Valencia University. “We can also see this in the fall in the hospitalisations of older age groups. They are no longer getting sick from the virus, or if they are it is a mild version. The vaccination drive has been a great step forward.” While experts are optimistic about the situation, they insisted on the need for caution. The worst may have passed thanks to the immunisation drive, but there are still many uncertainties, such as the new variants of the coronavirus. Last summer, the 14-day cumulative number of cases per 100,000 inhabitants dropped as low as 10, and on some days not a single death was recorded. But experts explain that these levels were only reached thanks to the strict spring lockdown, when millions of Spaniards were confined to their homes. The coronavirus began to spread again over summer and Spain was hit with a second wave between October and November. Infections began to rise again in the lead-up to the Christmas holidays. And in January, Spain recorded more than 11,000 deaths, the secondhighest monthly figure of all the pandemic, as confirmed by the

data consolidated by the Carlos III Health Institute. It is important to note, however, that many people died in the first wave without being tested for the coronavirus, meaning they were not included in the official toll. But experts do not think the pattern from last year will be repeated again. “The situation is not like it was then,” says Alfonso. “Now the vaccination drive is targeting increasingly younger age groups and research has already confirmed that the vaccines are safe for adolescents. This is going to significantly reduce the incidence rate now that we have managed to reduce the mortality rate.” The Covid-19 vaccination campaign is racing ahead – nearly two million doses are administered every week, nearly twice the number of just one month ago. And the speed of the drive is expected to accelerate even more as more shots are delivered and new vaccines are incorporated. But the end of the pandemic is far from over, say experts. There is still a long way to go before 70% of the population is vaccinated, which should begin to translate into herd immunity. At the current speed of the drive, this goal could be met by the end of summer.

Environment adheres to the #UnÁrbolPorEuropa initiative The Orihuela City Council, through the Department of the Environment, has joined the initiative "#UnÁrbolPorEuropa" which aims for each municipality plants at least one tree a year. The campaign is supported by the Office of the European Parliament, which hopes to achieve major sustainable development goals. The initiative is promoted by the young Europeanists of Equipo Europa and proposed by David Sassoli, President of the European Parliament. As a sign of adherence to # UnÁrbolPorEuropa, the Councillor for the Environment, Dámaso Aparicio, has planted a palm tree in the Palmeral de San Antón. More than 5,000 trees have been planted during the legislature with some 3,000 near the Segura river to aid the recovery of the riverside forest. Around two hundred palm trees have been planted in the BIC del Palmeral as well as another 1,200 palm trees that will be planted in the future. The rest of the planting, which will exceed the indicated figure, corresponds to fruit trees in the

Palmeral, as many in the surrounding urban orchards, the restoration and improvement of the Soto I6 and the upcoming landscape adaptation of Monte de San Miguel. Councillor Aparicio indicated that “through the City Council, incessant work is being carried out both for the planting of numerous trees in the municipality and for the protection of the existing ones. To this, we must add the

thousands of shrub species that are also being planted”. He pointed out that each planted specimen will allow the municipality to reduce around half a ton of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere each yer, which means reducing the emissions caused by a car in the same time frame. Therefore, with the planting of these 5,000 trees, 2,500 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) will be reduced per year in the municipality.

Did you take pension or investment advice since moving to Spain? By Sam Kelly DipPFS, EFA, BA (Hons) Managing Partner Chorus Financial doubt been left scratching your heads over how you haven’t seen better returns over so many years of strong markets.

I’m sure many of you reading this will already be aware of Chorus Financial, and the essential message we have been spreading across the British communities of Spain over the last few years. From the day we opened, we have campaigned for transparency in the investment, pension and financial planning industry here in Spain – we are very proud that those campaigns have won us international awards. For too many years IFA’s have targeted our communities with socalled ‘solutions’ loaded with layer upon layer of hidden fees, inappropriate risk, and unnecessary product tie-ins. Brits have been encouraged to ‘Transfer your pensions overseas!’ for apparent tax benefits that in many cases don’t exist. You’ve been tied into investment plans and unwittingly paying 2, 3 even 4 times more than you realise, and have no

We’ve even seen an alarming trend of clients being encouraged to take their pensions as ‘annuities’ for apparent tax benefits. These solutions are now resulting in Brits in our area being investigated by the Spanish authorities. While Chorus Financial have already helped hundreds of clients on the Costa Blanca avoid such practises, we are now upping our efforts to educate those living in your area, to help ensure you do not become yet another victim. In this column each week we have explained the structures created specifically to hide fees and commissions within popular investment and pension products offered to Brits living in Spain. We’ve discussed diversification and risk – too many times have I seen portfolios held by people on the Costa Blanca where the clients have been placed into a handful of investment funds, without any thought for how diversification helps reduce volatility and risk when investing.

All too often these recommendations are made because the IFA is getting paid by all parties – so you agreed to pay them an initial or annual fee, but beyond that, an insurance company, or ‘bond provider’ (for example Spanish Compliant Bonds) have paid them up to 8% initial commission – that is facilitated by locking you into these products for up to 10 years, where you could be paying 4 times more than you need to. Then lastly the fund managers pay them. So rather than an IFA going into the open market and carefully selecting high quality, low-cost funds, clients are finding themselves shoe-horned into particular funds that pay commission to the adviser. Such funds can add as much as 3% per year in charges, and often the clients have no idea such fees apply.

Chorus have already been operating on the Costa Blanca for many years out of our Javea and Quesada offices, and have hundreds of clients in this region, but with the opening of our new Chorus Financial Business Centre in Benijofar this summer, we look forward to seeing many more of you and offering the highest quality, most honest and transparent service in the region.

At Chorus we make a simple promise:we are only ever paid by one party – our clients. And you only pay us specific fees we have clearly explained to you, in both monetary and percentage amounts. That means that when we select products you pay the lowest price available, and when we select funds, we do so with fees and quality at the forefront of that advice.

If you are a financial adviser working on the Costa Blanca perhaps it’s time to also consider working for a different kind of financial advisory company? Just as we treat our clients with honesty & integrity, we treat our advisers like that too. We provide incredible support and facilities to help you be successful. You can contact me confidentially on the details above.

If you have concerns over existing investments or pensions, or are considering a new solution, speak to a Chorus Financial adviser today. An initial consultation is free and without pressure or obligation. Call me direct on +34 664 398 702, email s.kelly@chorusfinancial.es or visit www.chorusfinancial.es for more information.

Investment contracts are intended as medium to long term investments, and all investments have some level of risk. Figures in our articles are examples of what can be achieved and cannot be guaranteed; the value of your investments can go down as well as up. Fees and charges can vary and will be fully explained to you before any advice can take place. This article should not be considered as investment advice or a recommendation of any particular product.

Boris put Spain on amber list There is no green light for UK tourists to visit Spain when Prime Minister Boris Johnson lifts the current travel ban on 17th May. Green, amber and red lists have been created, with all countries graded depending on factors including their vaccination rate. There will also be a green “watchlist”, designed to help give people early warning that a country is at risk of being moved off the green list. People coming from green list countries need a negative predeparture Covid test, and they will not have to isolate at all upon their return. They will have to take PCR test on day two after their arrival. PCR tests are specified because they are more accurate than lateral flow tests. Those entering England from amber countries will need a negative pre-departure Covid test, have to isolate at home for 10 days and get a PCR test on days two and eight. They can still use the test-to-release system on day five, a negative test result meaning they can end their quarantine immediately. Travellers arriving from red list countries will need a negative pre-departure Covid test, undergo managed quarantine at a hotel for 10 days that cannot be cut short, and get a PCR test on days two and eight. The British government has decided to put all of Spain including the Canary and the

GBP / EUR UPDATE Balearic Islands - on its amber list for travel, meaning English holidaymakers in Spain will have to quarantine for ten days upon return. The government has said people should not travel to amber and red countries for leisure. “Whilst the British Government wants to see the safe return of international travel, we have decided that given the risk posed by variants of concern, and to protect the progress that the UK has made on vaccination rollout, we need to maintain strict border measures and testing requirements,” the British Embassy wrote on its Facebook page. “This means that only a very limited number of countries (12) have been categorised as green in our new traffic light system. We are removing the stay in the UK restrictions from the 17th of May, but the UK government has said that people should not be travelling to red or amber countries for leisure. Spain has

been categorised as an amber country”. Neighbouring Portugal – including the Azores and Madeira - and Gibraltar are among the small list of countries and territories included in the UK’s green travel list, alongside Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Brunei, Iceland, Faroe Islands, Falkland Islands, Israel and Jerusalem, South Georgia and Saint Helena. The UK’s traffic light system for travel will be reviewed every three weeks. “As the epidemiological situation improves worldwide, the UK government expects that more destinations will be added to the green list,” reads the UK embassy statement. UK holidaymakers are crucial to the recovery of Spain’s ailing tourism industry, representing 22.5 percent of international tourists in 2019 – 18 million people who spent €17.9 billion on their Spanish holidays.

GBP It was a strange week for a wavering pound. On Tuesday it had strengthened, fallen sharply and recovered swiftly for no obvious reason, eventually becoming the day’s top performer. Over the seven days, Friday morning to Friday morning, it was all but unchangedon average, and exactly flat against the JPY and NZD. The Bank of England announced that it would reduce the size of its monthly QE asset purchases, but also insisted that it was not tapering. It’s Money and Credit report continued the pattern of recent months, with further net repayments of consumer credit and increased household and corporate deposits. Although the number of mortgage approvals fell to 87.2k in March, the net increase of £11.8 billion in mortgage lending was a monthly record. The BoE’s Governor Andrew Bailey also proclaimed, “Let’s not get carried away” by the upgraded economic forecast. The pound fell in response, which was a shame as the economic data was quite positive. Markit’s manufacturing sector purchasing managers’ index was up by two points on the month and above forecast at 60.9. It was the highest reading since the record of 61.0 was set in July 1994. UK elections haven’t quite had an impact, yet, as most results are still not known. The wild card at that point will be the outcome in Scotland and the implications it might have for another

independence referendum and, through that, for sterling. . EURO Strange for sterling and quiet for the euro, it had little to say for itself. It played a mostly reactive game, with activity dampened by Labour Day holidays in several member nations at the start of the week. On average the euro fell by an average of 0.3%, giving up a fifth of a cent to sterling and losing half a US cent. Economic data from the euro area came in four sets: the consumer price index, gross domestic product, the purchasing managers’ indices and retail sales. Last Friday’s CPI numbers put headline Eurozone inflation at 1.6% in April, up from April’s 1.3% and in line with forecast. At the same time GDP was reported to have shrunk by a provisional 0.6% in the first quarter, a little less than analysts had predicted. The PMIs for manufacturing and serviceswere less sparkling for sure, lower on the month and below forecast. Manufacturing at 62.9 was a record high (since 1997) though, and retail sales increased by a monthly 2.7% in March and were up by 12% from the same month last year. There was not much reaction to any of those numbers because as with ecostats from elsewhere around the world, they are distorted by the base effect of last year’s Covidinduced slump. That said, the Netherlands, Austria and Italy did report record highs.

Spain begins Covid Spain joins EU jab for under60s campaign for India Spain is beginning to administer the first Covid-19 vaccines to the general population aged under 60 years of age. The regions of Aragón, Andalusia and Navarre have started to schedule vaccination appointments for people aged over 55, while Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and the Basque Country are set to do so next week. This is despite the fact that the Spanish Health Ministry has yet to outline a plan for the vaccination of this younger demographic. The last update to the ministry’s vaccination strategy only states that people in the 50-59 age group “will receive the vaccine considered best based on availability, the context of the pandemic and scientific evidence.” For now, this group is being vaccinated with the Covid-19 vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna, which both work by using RNA messenger technology. The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine was restricted to the 60-69 population after the European Medicines Agency (EMA) found a “possible link” between the medication and rare blood clot cases in younger patients. A similar link was also found between the single-dose Covid-19 vaccine from Janssen, a unit of the

US pharmaceutical Johnson & Johnson, which led to a temporary halt of its use. The Public Health Commission, which is made up of the central Health Ministry and the country’s regions, must now decide if one of both of these vaccines should be used on the 55-60 age group or be reserved for the older demographic, given most of the blood clot cases detected occurred in younger age groups. This decision will determine the future of a million doses. A total of 5.5 million Janssen vaccines are set to arrive in Spain just in this quarter. But most of these doses will remain in storage until a decision is made on whether or not they should be administered to the under-60 population, given that the AstraZeneca vaccine is primarily being used on the 60-69 group and the Pfizer and Moderna on the over-70s. Although a decision has not been reached, several regions – which are in charge of the vaccination drive as well as containing the pandemic in their territories – have decided to start vaccinating the under-60s with the Pfizer and Moderna vaccine. This comes as more doses begin to arrive in Spain. As of May, Pfizer alone is expected to deliver 1.3

million shots a week. Pfizer and Moderna are so far the only vaccines recommended for the under-60s. Although AstraZeneca shots were initially administered to essential workers in this age group, that stopped on 7th April when the Health Ministry changed its criteria in response to the EMA’s finding on the link between the medication and thrombosis cases. The Valencian government expects to administer 324,190 doses of the four authorised Covid-19 vaccines this week. Of the Pfizer doses, 108,908 will be administered to the 70-79 age group as second shots, while 74,730 will be administered as the first dose to the 69-72 population. Most of the Moderna vaccines (2,460) will go to the 70-and-over group, who are receiving their second dose. The AstraZeneca shot will be used as the first shot for the 60-69 demographic. A total of 84,280 doses will be administered in mass-vaccination sites and another 26,100 in primary healthcare centers in remote areas. The regional government will distribute 13,000 doses of the single-shot Janssen vaccine in large vaccination centres, which will be used on people aged between 70 and 72.

Spain has sent oxygen cannisters and ventilators to India to help the stricken subcontinent cope with its devastating Covid-19 epidemic, the European Commission has revealed. Along with 14 other European Union member States, Spain has joined a mass campaign through the bloc's Civil Protection Mechanism as contagion rates spiral out of control, with nearly 20 million people affected and intensive care units filled wall to wall – many of the patients are as young as 30, according to Indian authorities. “Collective action is the only solution if we want to win our fight against the pandemic,” said Janez Lenarcic, Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management. Lenarcic says he is 'very proud' of the EU countries which have joined forces to provide this 'substantial assistance' to the Asian nation 'at such a difficult time'. Last week, offers of aid came from Ireland, Belgium, Romania, Luxembourg, Portugal, Sweden, France, Italy, Austria and Finland, and since then, Spain, The Netherlands, Germany, the Czech Republic and Denmark have

signed up. All the equipment and medication provided will be sent to India en masse. From Spain, 119 portable oxygen cannisters - like those in the above photograph and 145 ventilators are on their way. The others have donated 500 oxygen cylinders (Czech Republic), 53 ventilators (Denmark), 100 oxygen cannisters, 30,000 phials of the anti-viral drug Remdesivir and 449 ventilators (The Netherlands), and 15,000 phials of anti-viral medication, 516 ventilators and an oxygen generator (Germany).

The European Commission will jointly fund the transport and coordinate delivery. With almost 20 million cases, India has become the secondworst hit country on earth in terms of numbers – rather than percentage – with only the USA reporting more cases of contagion, at 32.4 million. India is grappling with a fastmoving 'second wave' of the virus, in the form of a new mutation which is proving exceptionally aggressive and contagious and has left its health service overwhelmed.

Torrevieja bars and restaurants allowed to use streets for tables and chairs

Hungry family? Try Lidl’s 4 pizza tray

Torrevieja officials will once again this summer authorize that the bar and restaurant industry can occupy sections of the street with tables and chairs. The town hall will allow bar and restaurant owners to use complete sections of streets and even close some streets to traffic to allow tables and chairs to be placed outside during high season. The Councillor for Public Road Occupation, Federico Alarcón, together with the Councillor for Commerce and Hospitality of Torrevieja Town Hall, Rosario Martínez, met with the president of the Association of Hospitality Companies of Torrevieja (AEHTC), Joaquín Guillamó , with the aim of restarting the initiative that was launched during the deescalation period last summer. Those establishments wishing to apply for a street closure can do so at a new office located in La Plasa Market on Plaza Isabel II. The Department of Public Road Occupation said that the feasibility of each case will be studied individually, and " will be accepted as long as it complies with the provisions of the Municipal Ordinance and as long as it does not affect traffic or access to private garages, among other issues, which must be taken into consideration.”

Among Lidl’s best selling products at the moment is a four tier baking tray allowing you to cook four pizzas all at once. The four pizza tray was €22.99 but has recently been reduced to €9.99 on the Lidl website and in selected stores. The gadget would prove useful for big families, those having a pizza party or perhaps for those with different tastes, allowing you to cook a Hawaiian, pepperoni and a vegan pizza all at once. Cooking pizzas one by one can be offputting, especially if you prefer that the whole family sits down to eat together. The four pizza tray from Lidl seems to solve that problem and not only that, it folds away so it can be stored in a drawer for its next use. The tray is available this week in some physical supermarkets as well as the online Lidl store (shipping is €3.99) Resistant up to 230 degrees, it can be used in any conventional oven. The outer structure is made of chromed steel wire while the trays are made of sheet steel. In addition, it weighs 1,035 kilograms and the trays

Last summer the municipality authorized several street closures in the town centre for this purpose. The most notable closures last year were on Calle Zoa at Plaza de Oriente, which neighbours complained prevented direct access to the underground car park, and on Calle Bazán at Plaza de la Constitución.

themselves are 29 centimetres in diameter by 2.5 centimetres high, suitable for most standard supermarket fresh or frozen pizzas. Another extremely popular product (so popular in fact that it has completely sold out online, but available in some Lidl stores in Spain subject to stock) is an over sink drainer. The handy foldable ‘sieve’ like drainer has extendable arms which rest on the sink allowing you to easily drain pasta, rice or vegetables without having to hold a sieve or colander with one hand and a hot saucepan with the other. It is priced at €6.99.

Heineken to offer more 0.0 options Heineken’s Brew a Better World initiative will see the introduction of even more alcohol free beers to its range. The company says it wants to empower consumers by providing choice, transparency and with zero tolerance for the harmful use of alcohol. Following the massive success of its flagship Heineken 0.0, the company has over 130 nonalcoholic extensions in the pipeline and will continue to invest in innovations across its low and non-alcoholic portfolio. It aims to make it increasingly easier for consumers to reach for a low or nonalcoholic option depending on their preference and the occasion. By 2023, the company says it will ensure at least two zero-alcohol options are available in the majority of its markets. In addition, Heineken continues to be strongly committed to tackling the harmful use of alcohol. The company will continue to cultivate local partnerships to address alcohol harm including topics like the prevention of underage drinking, drink-driving and binge drinking. There has been a major shift in consumer trends in terms of alcohol consumption over the last three to five years and the alcohol free drinks industry has experienced a surge of growth. Changes in drinking behaviour, healthier lifestyles and the simple desire for more choice and variety have all contributed to the rise of the low- and no-alcohol drinks.

Jobs increase in April Although the effects of the coronavirus pandemic continue to be felt in the Spanish labour market, the latest figures offered by the Labour and Social Security ministries are affording some relief. Spain’s unemployment figure decreased by 39,012 individuals between the end of March and the end of April, for a total of 3,910,628 people currently registered as jobless. Meanwhile, the Social Security system added 134,396 new contributors over the same period, to reach an average of 19,055,298. The labour market improved in April thanks to job creation in construction, agriculture, fishing and the livestock industry. The tourism sector, on the other hand, continued to shed jobs. April is traditionally a good month for employment in Spain, partly because of seasonal factors such as the arrival of warm weather and the Easter vacations that kick off the tourism season. But the coronavirus pandemic has affected two Easters in a row now, undermining the stimulus to the hospitality industry. Whereas April 2017 set a new record for monthly drops in unemployment, in April 2021, there were 79,425 more jobless people in Spain than a year earlier – despite the fact that in April 2020, everyone was confined in their homes due to the coronavirus lockdown. The figures also offer a clear picture of the gender gap: women account for 57.8 percent of Spain’s unemployed

population. Broken down by regions, the highest jobless numbers are to be found in Andalusia (984,497), Catalonia (497,185) and the Valencia region (447,650). Despite this, Catalonia experienced the second-biggest drop in monthly unemployment (-8,715), after the Basque Country (-3,039). Although 1,356,845 new contracts

were signed in April, it was still 47,262 fewer than in March. Additionally, 87.9 percent of these were temporary contracts, reflecting a longstanding structural problem with the Spanish job market. Despite ongoing restrictions on mobility that are hurting tourism, some measures have been eased – including longer opening hours for bars and

restaurants – and this has provided some relief to struggling businesses. Help has also come in the form of the government’s ERTE job retention scheme, although the latest extension to this program is due to expire on May 31. According to Social Security figures released recently, there were 638,238 people on the ERTE program on 29th April, representing a drop of 36,621 from the end of March. The scheme has saved thousands of businesses from going under during the pandemic, but some companies are already transitioning to collective layoffs (EREs) that could affect as many as 35,000 workers in the banking, retail and auto sectors. Determining the exact number of jobless people in Spain is difficult: furloughed workers on the ERTE scheme are not being counted as unemployed and the two ministries offer different figures. This is because the Labour Ministry relies on a voluntary register where people seeking a job of under 20 hours a week or a contract of less than three months are not considered unemployed. The other key indicator, the EPA workforce survey, uses a different methodology and counts as jobless any individual who has not worked a single hour on the week of the survey despite actively wanting to. According to EPA figures, there was an average of 3.6 million people without a job in the first quarter of the year, for an unemployment rate of 15.98 percent.

Spanish submarine breaks record A submarine from Spain has beaten the national depth record by plunging into the second-most profound section of the Mariana Trench, and the third on earth. This Trench, which lies in the western Pacific Ocean and runs several hundred kilometres to the south-west of US-owned island Guam, east of The Philippines and north-east of Indonesia, goes down to 36,037 feet, or 10,984 metres. The DSV ('Deep Submergence Vehicle') Limiting Factor, built by the Catalunya-based firm Triton Submarine EMEA and piloted by engineer Héctor Salvador from the province of Lugo, Galicia, descended to the bottom of the Sirena Deep, which is 10,714 metres or 35,151 feet and the third-furthest down on earth after Horizon Deep and Challenger Deep. Located in the Tonga Trench between New Zealand and Fiji, the Horizon Deep is approximately 10,800 metres or 35,433 feet down, and Challenger Deep, in the Mariana Trench and within the offshore territory of Micronesia, is estimated to be around 10,929 metres, or 35,856 feet down. Along with co-pilot and mission leader Tim MacDonald, from Australia, the 12hour immersion – the second-deepest in history to date – was aimed at recovering a scientific module that had become trapped on the sea floor the previous day. The crew then took samples of

microbial tissue from the sediment in the Trench, which are of huge interest to scientists and are now being studied in a laboratory. Other samples from the bottom of the Trench are due to be delivered to the Spanish Navy to be put on display in the Illustrious Marines Pantheon in San Fernando, Cádiz province, as a tribute to the Naval officers who lost their lives during the 16thcentury round-the-world trip in the Nao Victoria, the first-ever circumnavigation of the globe led by Portugal's Fernando Magalhães and Spain's Juan Elcano. Triton Submarines operations manager, Héctor Salvador said: “You suddenly realise the monumental depth of the Mariana Trench when it takes you four-and-a-half hours to get to the bottom. “The dramatic sea-bed formations, where the oldest oceanic crust in the world is being destroyed beneath the Mariana Plate, bear testimony to the immense forces that shape our planet.”

This Week´s Movie Picks Fantastic Beasts and Where to The Find Them Mountain Between Us Sunday 16th May – ITV, 8.30 pm Saturday 15th May – Channel 4, 10.00 pm

Stranded after a tragic plane crash, two strangers must forge a connection to survive the extreme elements of a remote snow covered mountain. When they realize help is not coming, they embark on a perilous journey across hundreds of miles of wilderness, pushing one another to endure and discovering strength they never knew possible.

In mid-1920s New York, Newt Scamander, a British young activist wizard, arrives in the city, holding a mysterious leather suitcase that shelters diverse and magical creatures that exist among us. Amid an already fragile equilibrium of secrecy, and the increasing disasters ascribed to the dark wizard, Gellert Grindelwald, Newt's precious suitcase goes missing, and to make matters worse, several creatures manage to escape. Before long, this unforeseen complication catches Senior Auror Percival Graves' attention who targets Newt, against the backdrop of an invisible, devastating, and utterly unpredictable menace that still wreaks havoc on 5th Avenue. In the end, is there a hidden agenda behind Graves' intentions? Moreover, what will happen to the remaining fantastic beasts that are still on the loose?

Complaints over Alan Carr’s Epic Gameshow Alan Carr's Epic Gameshow has been hit with 190 complaints to Ofcom after some viewers "objected to the ethnicity of the contestants". The shocking figures were included in the TV watchdog's weekly report after a recent episode of the ITV show featured a line-up of black players. The episode in question was a rebooted version of Michael Barrymore’s Strike it Lucky, with all six participants hoping to win big money prizes. Some racist viewers took to Twitter why the gameshow was on to complain that there were no white people playing. But other fans of the show were quick to hit back, with one person tweeting: "Knew Alan Carr’s Epic Game show would have the fragile white people up in arms that all the contestants are black (which I think is great btw!). Another added: "Keep it up @itv. The more we normalise this, the more we can tackle racism head on." A third person tweeted: "What?

Why are people complaining about a black family being on Alan Carr’s game show? Not everyone’s white in this world. Also, IT. IS. A. GAME. SHOW. Why should it even matter?" A fourth viewer posted: ""What sort of country do we live in when people have to criticise an Alan Carr gameshow because there are black people on it." Alan Carr's Epic Gameshow, fronted by the 44-year-old comedian, revives a classic gameshow each week with members of the public taking on the games in exchange for cash and prizes. Both ITV and 44-yearold comedian Alan are yet to comment on the backlash. Viewers will remember that ITV showed their support to Diversity last year after Britain's Got Talent received thousands of complaints regarding the dance group's Black Lives Matter routine. Over 20,000 viewers lodged official complaints to Ofcom about the performance.

Dani Dyer is set to join Dad on EastEnders Dani Dyer is reportedly joining her father Danny on EastEnders next month. According to reports, the former Love Island star, 24, will make a cameo appearance as a taxi driver who picks up Danny's character Mick Carter. It is said their scenes were filmed three weeks ago, and Dani's cabbie will only be making the one appearance on the soap. A source said: 'Soap fans are going to be thrilled to see father and daughter acting opposite each other. Unlike some other celebrities who come on the show, she won't be playing herself, she will be a cabbie who picks up Mick in the street. But it's only a small role and not one which bosses are planning on keeping as an ongoing character.' The father-and-daughter duo have previously appeared on screen together in his films Vendetta, Run For Your Wife, Doghouse and The Other Half.

Dani previously auditioned for a role on EastEnders, but didn't land the part and instead joined Love Island where she was crowned champion alongside exboyfriend Jack Fincham. In 2018, she said of the audition: 'They wouldn’t let me in it. I think it’s because my dad is already on it, so if I went on it, there would be a massive outrage.' Meanwhile, Harry Redknapp confirmed last week he will have a role on upcoming episodes of the soap, and official pictures of him on set were recently released. In the pictures, Harry posed next to the sign for the show's famous Albert Square and also stands with his hands in his pockets in front of the Queen Vic pub. He has joined the soap as a friend of Danny's character Queen Vic landlord Mick, and it has been claimed the pair are already 'inseparable'.

The Apprentice won't air new series this year Lord Sugar won't see you now. Or at all until next year, it seems. That is the apparent plan for the next series of The Apprentice, which was supposed to come out last July but has been continuously postponed due to COVID-19. In a recent interview with The Sun, Lord Sugar said that the 16th series of the BBC business contest has been delayed once more until 2022. "I think you'll see it in the early part of next year, in fact that's the plan," he explained. "If things go well, and there's no outbreaks or third waves, we're planning to start recording later this year and it should be just after Christmas that they'll start it again." Meanwhile, Lord Sugar has been keeping busy down under. He was able to film a celebrity version of The Apprentice in Australia, even though the country put in place some of the strictest COVID protocols in the world.

Recently, the UK show came under fire after former contestant Lottie Lion called on the BBC to make a major change. "When Lord Sugar fired me he said if I was five years older it could work," she said. "My message to Lord Sugar is the minimum age must be raised to at least 21. I was too young." She also commented on the show's aftercare, alleging that she wasn't contacted by producers after deleting her social media. In a statement, a representative for The Apprentice said: "The wellbeing of candidates is of paramount importance. We have a robust duty of care protocol in place which includes an experienced network of support before, during and after filming.

Vegan boost as threeMichelin starred restaurant goes plantbased One of the world’s most revered and famous restaurants will serve a plant-based menu when it reopens on 10 June after the head chef dubbed the modern food system “unsustainable”. The three-Michelin-starred Eleven Madison Park in New York is overseen by the chef Daniel Humm, whose decision to abandon meat further marks veganism’s shift into the mainstream. In a statement posted on the restaurant website, Humm said: “We have always operated with sensitivity to the impact we have on our surroundings, but it was becoming ever clearer that the current food system is simply not sustainable, in so many ways … It was clear that after everything we all experienced this past year, we couldn’t open the same restaurant. “We’ve made the decision to serve a plant-based menu in which we do not use any animal products – every dish is made from vegetables, both from the earth and the sea, as well as fruits, legumes, fungi, grains, and so much more.” Though Mr Humm was not available for further comment, his friend Jason Atherton, who has, among others, the Michelinstarred Pollen Street Social, said the move will only push others to explore similar ideas.

Mr Atherton, who serves a plant-based tasting menu at Pollen Street alongside a classic one incorporating meat and fish, said: “I absolutely think he’ll hold onto three stars. Humm is a serious guy and when he does something, he does it properly. He’s a special chef. “His is a legacy restaurant and if anyone is going to lead the way, it’s him. I’ll miss the duck there, but when I heard the news my wife and I said how excited we were – he’s had the courage to do it.” Mr Atherton said he will also continue to develop his own vegan food in London: “It would be too big a risk to go completely plant-based now. I have staff, suppliers, and landlords to think about. But things are heading that way – not a world without

meat and fish, but one where we take more care. Fine dining has always been an example and it’s important we carry on coming up with ideas for vegan food, but also for creating a more sustainable planet. At Pollen Street, vegan food has become really important.” The French chef Alexis Gauthier has been at the forefront of plant-based fine dining at his restaurant in Soho, where a vegan tasting menu has long been the focus, and which recently became the only choice for diners. Last month, he also announced the new 123 Vegan in Mayfair, as the demand for meat-free options scales up. Last year, the vegan restaurant ONA in France became the first of its kind in Europe to win a Michelin star.

Peloton forced to recall Space wine could fetch $1m at auction treadmills over safety issues Fitness brand Peloton has been forced to recall treadmills in the UK and in the US after a series of safety concerns including the death of a six year old child. A US watchdog said that the Tread and Tread+ treadmills could cause injury or death to adults, children and pets if they are pulled underneath. Tread machines sold in the UK are also being recalled because display consoles could fall off. Peloton boss John Foley said the firm had "made a mistake" in not recalling the machines sooner. nIn March of this year, Peloton issued a warning to parents to keep children away from its Tread+ machine after the death of the six-yearold, who was pulled underneath the rear of the treadmill. At the time Mr Foley called it a "tragic accident" - one of a "small handful" of incidents in which children have been hurt on the firm's exercise equipment. In a statement this week however, Foley said, “I want to be clear, Peloton made a mistake in our initial response to the Consumer Product Safety Commission's request that we recall the Tread+. We should have engaged more productively with them from the outset. For that, I apologise.” An agreement between the watchdog and Peloton means the firm must stop selling the machines in the US and give a full refund to people who want to return them. Because of the type motor used in the Tread+, the machine needs a higher ground clearance than typical treadmills. A report by the PA news agency said a Peloton spokesperson

had confirmed that the recall also related to the Tread in the UK. There have been reports of minor injuries such as abrasions, cuts and bruises in the UK and Canada. The touchscreen on the Tread can detach and fall, according to the CPSC. However, the Tread+ carries a more serious hazard because "adult users, children, pets and objects can be pulled underneath the rear of the treadmill, posing a risk of injury or death". Peloton rose to prominence during the pandemic as a premium option for allowing people to exercise from home with live video from trainers, as gyms were forced to close. Shares in the New York-based company fell more than 14% after the recall announcement. In addition to the death, there have been about 72 reports of adult users, children, pets and objects being pulled under the rear of the treadmill, including 29 reports of injuries to children such as second and third-degree abrasions, broken bones and lacerations.

A French wine that spent more than a year in orbit on International Space Station could fetch $1m at auction, it was revealed this week. The wine, named Petrus 2000, was one of 12 bottles sent into space in November 2019 and according to experts, tastes “delicious.” The wine was sent into space by researchers hoping to learn more about the potential for "extra-terrestrial agriculture". The wine returned to earth 14 months later, with the taste subtly altered, according to experts. Now the bottle of wine, originally priced at $10,000, is to go on sale at Christie's auction house - where staff believe a wine connoisseur could pay as much as $1m to own it. International director of Christie's wine and spirits department, Tim Tiptree, said wine has been "matured in a unique environment" of close to zero gravity aboard the ISS. "It's just a very harmonious wine that has the ability to age superbly, which is why it was chosen for this experiment," he said. The wine reached stratospheric levels after being sent into orbit by private space start-up, Space Cargo Unlimited. Researchers wanted to develop a better understanding of the ageing process, fermentation and bubbles in wine. At a blind taste test in March at the Institute for Wine and Vine Research in Bordeaux, 12 connoisseurs compared a bottle of space wine to the same vintage that had remained in a cellar. They described a difference in taste - but said it was hard to describe. One expert said the wine that remained on Earth tasted a bit younger while the space-aged version was "softer and more aromatic".

Christie's will host a private auction for the space wine, which comes with a terrestrial bottle of the same vintage for

comparison, together with a decanter, glasses and a corkscrew carved from a meteorite. It will all be displayed in a hand-carved wooden trunk with decoration inspired by "Star Trek" universe, as well as science fiction author Jules Verne. Other bottles from the dozen that travelled to space remain unopened and there are no plans to sell them, Christie's said.

The low down on Celiac Disease One out of every 100 people in the world suffers from celiac disease. This serious autoimmune disorder affects a person’s diet-more specifically, their ability to ingest gluten. We have everything you need to know... What is celiac disease? A person with celiac disease should not consume food containing gluten - when they do, their immune system reacts abnormally and attacks the interior wall of the small intestine. Over time, it becomes more and more difficult for the small intestine to absorb nutrients like calcium, iron, proteins, and vitamin D. The person then becomes susceptible to malnutrition, anaemia, and other health problems, such as infertility and some types of cancers. Which foods contain gluten? Gluten is a sticky, elastic protein. In some types of foods, it allows the various ingredients to stick together, just like the glue you would use in arts and crafts. Gluten is found in wheat, kamut, barley, and rye, and in many other products we consume every day like bread, cookies, cereal, pasta, beer, and breaded foods. Is celiac disease hereditary? Celiac disease is hereditary. People who have a parent, a child, or a sibling with the disorder are up to 20 percent more likely to be diagnosed with celiac disease. Aside from heredity, there are other risk factors for celiac disease. For example, people with type 1 diabetes are up to 6 percent more likely to have celiac disease

as well. People with rheumatoid arthritis, other autoimmune diseases (particularly thyroid disease), Down syndrome, and Addison’s disease also have an increased risk of developing celiac disease. How is celiac disease diagnosed? Surprisingly, despite the media attention given to celiac disease over the past few years, researchers estimate that only 20 percent of people with the disease receive a diagnosis. However, diagnosis is relatively easy, requiring a blood test and a biopsy of the small intestine. Of course, it’s also possible to eliminate gluten from one’s diet to see how the body reacts. However, it’s better to get the advice of a health professional so that gluten isn’t needlessly removed from the menu. If you don’t have celiac disease, avoiding gluten is not recommended, according to a new study in the British Medical Journal. Is there a cure for celiac disease? Unfortunately, there is still no definitive cure for celiac disease. In most cases, doctors recommend that patients follow a gluten-free diet. In the first few days of the new diet, the patient should notice an improvement in their health. Symptoms disappear progressively, as does the inflammation in the intestine. Patience is key, though - it can sometimes take several years to make a full recovery. In addition to a gluten-free diet, a person with celiac disease can take vitamin and mineral supplements, as long as they are gluten-free and recommended by a health professional. These supplements

may be prescribed in the case of a deficiency. It’s also recommended to drink lots of water. If you’re on a gluten-free diet, you should never cheat. Even eating a small amount of food that contains gluten can make the disease flare up. You may not notice symptoms right away, but your small intestine could suffer more damage.

Celiac Disease

Symptoms of celiac disease: Diarrhoea - Having diarrhoea does not necessarily mean you have celiac disease. However, if you’ve noticed that you almost always have diarrhoea after eating food that contains gluten, you may have celiac disease. Fatigue - Like many other illnesses, celiac disease causes fatigue. In fact, it’s one of the most common symptoms, caused by the small intestine having difficulty absorbing nutrients, and by anaemia (an iron deficiency) - both of which are effects of celiac disease. Weight loss - You should always consult a doctor about any unexplained weight loss. In the case of celiac disease, weight loss is caused by a deficiency in vitamins and minerals. On the other hand, some people with celiac disease gain weight, but this is quite rare. Abdominal pain - Abdominal pain occurs frequently in people with celiac disease. These cramps usually begin shortly after the consumption of food containing gluten.

Lately I have not been able to look forward to any kind of future. I also find that I focus on death a lot. I am late in my early 70’s and think to myself that I must only have another 10 to 15 years left to live. I don't think I've achieved much in life other than produce one child, who I rarely see, and I am divorced so that did not work out either. Lockdown confirmed to me that I don't have any true friends, but someone told me I am insincere and treat people badly; something that came as quite a shock to me as I considered I was well liked, but as no none stayed in touch with me from my local pub, I am starting to wonder if it is true. Friendship should not be one-sided. You say that no one kept in touch with you during Lockdown, but did you contact any of your former friends? Perhaps you need to make more of an effort as a potential friend. Have you thought of inviting friends over; either individually or otherwise (when we are able to mix more). Being a good friend to someone is not expecting others to always do for us, but to show interest in them and do nice things for other people. Perhaps you have been selfish and insincere as one person told you. Maybe it's time to turn over a new leaf. If your old friends are no longer there for you, you will have to make new friends. Start by volunteering, or helping a neighbour who you know is in need. You might get a feeling of satisfaction from helping others; something which is proved to help our inner self.

Wind - It’s completely normal to have wind, especially after drinking a carbonated beverage, for example. What’s not normal is having a lot of wind, or having wind all the time. In the case of celiac disease, wind usually appears after the consumption of foods with high gluten content. Constipation - Suffering from chronic constipation is a daily reality for many patients with celiac disease, who have

difficulty with their bowel movements and sometimes go several days without going to the bathroom. Swollen legs - Some people with celiac disease experience swelling in the legs, which is caused by a lack of proteins in the body. If the nervous system is affected, the patient will experience numbness in the hands and feet, and may have trouble maintaining balance.

Motorcycles: 10 Dangerous Infractions May is recognised as Motorcycle Awareness Month, when warmer weather often means an increase in motorbikes on the road, and therefore a reminder to us all the vulnerability of two-wheeled road users. However, we must also be aware that motorcyclists themselves must also play a part in their own road safety and be aware of the dangers they too can put themselves in whilst on the road. According to all recorded data, inappropriate speed is the primary cause of incidents with victims in which motorcycles are involved. In other words, a factor which is primarily the responsibility of the rider themselves is the primary cause of injury incidents. The motorcycle is an agile and practical vehicle in urban traffic, and pleasant on roads. Its construction, lacking bodywork, offers a different experience to the driver and passenger, but also little protection. Therefore, driving a two-wheeled vehicle requires continuous concentration and anticipation, complete knowledge, and strict compliance with traffic regulations. Avoiding certain unregulated manoeuvres and, above all, dangerous ones, increases safety and comfort for both the rider and other road users. Here are the ten most common

infractions, each one a very dangerous practice, which are frequently observed. Overtaking without separation Motorcyclists also have the obligation to distance themselves laterally from the vehicle they are overtaking. In town, it must be a sufficient separation; but on the open road, where the speed of traffic can be much higher, this lateral safety distance must be at least one and a half metres, a margin to avoid possible conflicts with other vehicles caused by distractions, lack of observation or unexpected manoeuvres. Inappropriate speed Adapting speed to the road and the conditions is fundamental, arguably more important when on a motorcycle. Excessive speed, or even inappropriately slow, can be synonymous of incidents where the rider is put at extreme risk. As mentioned, inappropriate speed is the first cause of injury incidents involving motorcycles, 23% of all accidents, and speeding is the most frequent violation committed by motorcycle riders, almost half of all the infractions committed in accidents with victims. Driving on the hard shoulder As a general rule, drivers

of

motorcycles - and other cars - are prohibited from driving on the hard shoulder. Of course, they can occupy it for an emergency, or if creating an undue hazard for other road users, but using the hard shoulder for other purposes – such as overtaking traffic is a misuse and sanctionable. Mopeds are permitted to ride on the hard shoulder, but not motorbikes. Overtaking on the right Overtaking on the right in interurban areas - roads, highways or motorways - is forbidden as it can be very risky if the vehicle being overtaken intends to return to the right lane at that precise moment. And the risk is even greater for a two-wheeled vehicle, less visible and more unstable. Changing direction where it is not allowed This manoeuvre must be performed where it is safe, in the time and space essential and signalling in advance. Therefore, it is forbidden to do so on

level crossings, tunnels, motorways, curves and changes of gradient with poor visibility. Riding with the light off The front and rear lighting makes a motorcycle more visible. For this reason, motorcycles must have their lights on at all time, night and day. Overtaking between cars Like other vehicles, motorcycles must travel in their corresponding place, becoming visible in the centre of their lane, which they may abandon only to overtake, turn, change lanes etc. Moving between vehicles without proper separation is risky, as vehicles and movements are unpredictable. Parking on the pavement Pavements, walkways and other pedestrian areas are places where motorcycles and other motor vehicles are prohibited from parking as a general

rule. However, municipalities can regulate stopping and parking for twowheeled vehicles in these places, as long as they do not interfere with or endanger pedestrian traffic. Pay attention to traffic signals in these areas. Excessive speed in residential areas The agility and manoeuvrability of the motorcycle can cause a false sense of control to its driver in residential streets, near pedestrian crossings, schools or markets, where the emergence of pedestrians on the road can be continuous and unforeseen. Therefore, in places with a high likelihood of a vehicle-pedestrian 'encounter', drivers must reduce speed as much as necessary. Invading the opposite direction On occasion, motorcycle riders may be tempted to invade the opposite direction to move more quickly down a standing street. Even doing so for just a few metres can be considered a serious infraction, with a 500€ fine and six points. The reason is that it is dangerous for the motorcyclist as the risk of collision against vehicles that are travelling correctly is greatly increased, and it can cause unnecessary stress and movement of vehicles forced to move out of the way.

Abbey Anglers On Tuesday the 4th May we visited the El Bosquet Complex at Crevillente. Hopefully in the not too distant future the borders will be opening up as restrictions are lifted following this dreadful covid pandemic and it will be possible to mix up the venues and venture further afield. In truth this complex has been a godsend during these testing times. After very heavy overnight rains we feared the worst regarding the road access but the recent improvements by the owners meant that all the roads around the complex were easily passable. We once again fished pegs A1 to 7 and 26 to 40 and once again the winner on the day was Neil McBernie. Neil fished maggot and pellet on the pole from peg 5 and took a large amount of carp and mullet for 27.70kg. It was nice to see that Neil was sporting some more sedate trousers after abandoning last weeks outlandish apparel. In second place was Russell Davidson who fished pellet close in on the pole from peg 26 for 12.46kg of carp and in third place was Terry “Swing em” Screen who put last weeks disaters behind him to take

12.02kg of carp from peg 4. Other section winners were , yours truly Ian Brown with 11.50kg, Tricky Dickie Smith with 11.10kg, Richard King with 7.06kg and Terry Brindley with 11.64kg The pairs competition was won by Neil and Mr Pastry himself, Terry Brindley with 39.34kg. Rods N Reels The following day we once again fished the same venue. On this occasion we also decided to include a section on pegs 17 to 25 along with the usual sections. The weather was set fair and most of the match was fished in a slight to moderate breeze and glorious sunshine with temperatures around 25 degrees. Winner on the day was Mick ´´The Gooner´´ Hill who after what was a disastarous previous day were he only caught one fish ten minutes

before the final whistle, put all that behind him to weigh 32.14kg. Drawn on peg 5 he fished double maggot across to take lots of carp and mullet. Well done Mick. In second place draw on peg 21 was Terry Brindley. Terry almost tripped up over his lip on his way back to his van whilst sulking after drawing this peg as he thought it would fish poorly. He fished his usual Paste on the pole to take lots of quality carp for 27.96kg. Third on the day was Steve Higgins who fished maggot on the pole from peg 7 to take a steady stream of carp and mullet for 26.88kg. The pairs competition was a very close affair and Mick Hill and Neil McBernie ran out the eventual winners with 55.64kg. Neil had the audacity to say he had drawn a snaggy peg in peg 19 but still managed to weigh in 23.10kg. Other section winners was again yours truly Ian Brown with 13.52kg,Tony´´One Arm´´McMillan with 16.80kg and Richard Tricky Wood with 19.04kg. Elche CF leave Empty Handed Elche CF travelled to San Sebastian in the Basque Country for their Friday night fixture against Real Sociedad. Both teams had something to fight for, albeit at very different ends of the spectrum. Elche were fighting for their La Liga survival, whilst Real were hunting down a place in the Europa League. The historical statistics were not in favour of the Franjiverdes, as they had only won once in their last 20 visits to the Anoeta Stadium. The opening minutes of the game were promising for Escriba's men, but that promise was short lived, as on the 10th minute Raul Guti was awarded a yellow card for a tackle. That was not the end of the incident as the referee exited to review it on VAR. On returning to the pitch he rescinded the yellow and produced a red instead, followed by another 3 yellows to protesting fellow Elche team mates. The Franjiverdes were forced to play the remaining 80 minutes with just 10 men, which they managed surprisingly well in the first half. VAR worked in Elche's favour a

little later by disallowing a goal due to the millimetre offside position of David Silva during the build up to the shot.

of Elche is not only in their hands but also in the hands of their relegation rivals. Very few points separate the season stragglers.

Elche remained strong in defence choosing to play for the 0-0 draw, a tactic which was reflected in the statistics of 1 goal attempt, 0 attempts on target, 0 corners and just 26% possession. Real did not have the same objective, and scored twice in the last quarter of the game. Aritz sent in a header from a corner on the 72nd minute. During extra time, Oyarzabal struck a raising bullet of a shot which nipped in under the cross bar whilst Gazzaniga was still routed to his spot.

All La Liga sides have the opportunity for 6 points next week as they play midweek as well as weekend games. On Tuesday evening Elche will play Alaves at 20:00, then they will travel south to Cadiz for their fixture on Sunday at 18:30.

With just 3 games to go, the fate

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT weekend.

■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Oh, Sergio. No. No, no, no, no. As Gary Lineker’s media team succinctly tweeted, what kind of idiot tries to do that when there is so much on the line? Those of a certain age (which, to be fair, will be most of you I suspect) will remember Lineker trying to be just a little bit too clever when taking a spot-kick against Brazil to level Sir Bobby Charlton’s England goalscoring record. I don’t think we called it a Panenka back then, we just called it rubbish. Aguero, with City 1-0 up against their Champions League Final opponents Chelsea and with a win securing this season’s Premier League title - not to mention the chance to equal Wayne Rooney’s record of scoring the most Premier League goals for one club - thought he’d make a fool of Eddie Mendy. As you can probably guess, there was only one fool. Tommy Tuchel seems to have the measure of Peppy G as Chelsea sorted themselves out at half-time and came out to win the match 2-1. Sure, they were helped by Aguero’s tomfoolery and Kurt Zouma unbelievably getting away with a nailed-on foul on Raheem Sterling, but a win is a win and all that.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer clearly has a formula that works, so why deviate? Aston Villa took the lead, obviously, United sorted themselves out in the break and won. I am sure that Douglas Luiz would like the opportunity to make that decision again. Mason Greenwood is quietly becoming pretty lethal once again meaning United probably don’t need to go and waste 150 million big ones on Erling Haaland. Harry Maguire’s record of playing every single Premier League minute this season came to an end after Edinson Cavani managed to send a Villa player flying into the United skipper. Cavani made up for this by scoring the third, whilst Ollie Watkins was probably a little hard done by to be given a second yellow for diving given that Henderson did make the tiniest bit of contact - not enough for a penalty, not enough to send him off. Maguire might now miss the European final and the European Championships - it just seems that summer vacations in Europe do not agree with him. Thanks to their fan protest, United now have a fixture pile-up and one less £200m sponsor after one pulled out due to the negative publicity of being attached to the Glazers. Swings and roundabouts.

With both City and Chelsea navigating their way through their Champions League semis to book a date in Istanbul (or London, if common sense actually prevails for once), there’s no way on Earth Tuchel’s team are going there for a nice day out. Sacking a manager before going on to win the European title? Peak Chelsea, no?

Leicester seem set to achieve the impossible for a second season running - that’s finding a way to not qualify for the Champions League despite being well set for the entire season. They went down 4-2 to Steve Bruce’s Newcastle on Friday night and it’s amazing how Bruce’s team seem to be a lot better now they have their two best attackers available again. You know, just like he said.

Manchester City’s champagne is going to be nice and cold at this rate - especially after United’s fans graciously allowed them to play this

With Leicester’s wheels falling off, there has to be renewed hope at Anfield that if they can just be reasonably good for the next few

games then they could find themselves remaining at the top table next season. Sadio Mane scored an oh-so-rare goal and Thiago opened his account for the club against Southampton - whose players are putting a cunning plan into effect by making sure Hassenhuttl isn’t poached by a bigger club by making it look like he is not very good. Brighton were very, very Brighton once more - they led against Wolves through Lewis Dunk only to see the very same player pick up his second red card of the season. Wolves went on to win before Neal Maupay managed to pick up the latest Premier League sending off this season, a full seven minutes after the final whistle. All this does seem to make Graham Potter a very good fit for Spursy Spurs. Tottenham went to Leeds and were shown what a well-coached, joinedup, all-on-the-same page football team looks like leaving any slim hope of Champions League football in the bin. The best Spurs can now hope for is avoiding the Europa Conference League. Rookie manager Ryan Mason is still rewatching Harry Kane’s disallowed goal to see if he was actually offside. Marcelo Bielsa had a point - “the conclusion was the difference in desire of the players”. The story of Tottenham’s season in one translated phrase, right there. The list of new managers seems to be ever-rotating. Serie A winning Inter boss Antonio Conte is now being linked along with Simone Inzaghi. It’s pretty clear which one the Spurs fans would prefer given a choice West Ham seem to have run out of steam and Everton showed that they are marginally better away from home, Ancelotti beating the Moysiah 1-0 at the Athletics Stadium. Everton remain on course to be utterly insignificant in 7th. Christian Benteke summed up his entire football career against Sheffield United. Palace’s frontman saw

everything he hit cleanly turned away by Aaron Ramsdale yet the one he did get given was deflected in after he shinned it - by the same token, Palace’s two goals summed up everything about Sheffield United. Both were deflected in past Jonah Ramsdale (who actually played well). Having seen his Arsenal team fail miserably to join United in the Europa League Final, Mikel Arteta has made it clear that even more changes need to be made in the squad. His immediate concern should probably be the chance of immediate change being made in the manager’s chair - with exChelsea manager Maurizio Sarri being linked to the Emirates. Whether it’s Arteta or someone else, Arsenal’s future must be built around Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith-Rowe, the two academy boys that can help prevent the Gunners make any more shocking buys in the transfer market. Nicolas Pepe, the fifth most expensive signing in British football history, is often considered one of those shocking buys (certainly around here) - but his strike was rather tasty. Mind you, do it when it matters Pepe - like a Europa League semi-final, as opposed to against a pretty-much relegated Baggies. The same could be said for Willian - signed on a free but on a decent wage, you’d imagine. Great free-kick, just in the wrong game. Defeat means Fireman Sham cannot claim to have never taken a team down - mind you, he’ll always have Liverpool, Man City and Chelsea from his WBA days and, no doubt, he’ll remind us.

CD Montesinos vs Atletico de Catral CF With all the palaver of the ongoing pandemic and the cringe-worthy excesses of the comedy European super league this year, it felt good to be back sat on the warm concrete terraces of the Cauldron. Sat with like minded amateur pundits and commentators who would, in most cases, give (alleged tax-dodger) Lineker and Shearer a run for their money. Live, real, local, passionate football was back and it felt good, I can attest.

for next season. They can't be relegated from this group, but could be promoted from it. Hopefully, that clears that conundrum up.

The accursed pandemic had ridden roughshod over the remnants of the 2021 season, so, in an effort to make the best of a bad job, the Valencian FA have split the Regional 1st into two sections, following the last game against Monnegre (a 4-2 win for the Reds), this meant that Monte would play out the rest of this season in the "Top 7" group, effectively meaning that they had secured their place in the 1st Regional

Onto the game then. Catral finished in 2nd place before the split, so were likely to be tricky opponents and so it transpired. Both teams contributed to a busy, bright start to the game and it was Monte who drew first blood when TONI (22) pounced on a blocked shot to blast home from the edge of the area. Catral drew level with an equally neat, turn and finish by Gelardo. Other than the referee brandishing more cards than

were on display at Methuselah's last birthday, there wasn't a lot more than could be said about the half. Decent enough football, but, to be honest, we were just happy to be there. HT: CD Montesinos 1 – 1 Atletico de Catral CF Sadly, the second period simply wasn't as good as the first. The referee, who to be honest, had a shocker, continued to miss blatant fouls, yet carded the smallest infringements, to the frustration of both teams. As if to illustrate the point, during a Monte attack,TONI (22), returning from an offside position, then strayed offside again and not just an elbow or a big toe, but by several, big, metres, collected the over the top ball and calmly slid it past the onrushing and presumably totally bemused Catral keeper. The gathered mass and I suspect pretty much the whole Monte team were

actually embarrassed that the goal had been given. Catral were visibly and vociferously stunned, but, the goal stood. Further flurries of yellow cards and substitutions caused the game to turn scrappy (but still watchable) and it was with an air of creeping inevitability that two things were going to happen next. Someone was going to get a second yellow and walk and Catral were going to draw level. The leveller came, again, from Gelardo, with a crisp chip over the advancing Tommi, proving that if you give a decent forward time and space in the box, he will punish you. The second yellow came when Manu Sanchez was given his marching orders for a silly shirt tug near the half way line. All very unnecessary and avoidable. Monte switched to siege mode for the remainder of the game and, to be honest, Catral huffed and puffed, but

didn't really look like grabbing the winner. So, it ended all square. Most didn't mind, Monte looked OK in some areas of the pitch, but in others looked tentative and tired. Bigger tests are on their way. Creativity was sadly lacking in the usual key areas (you know what I'm talking about). The referee was conspicuous by her presence and detracted from what what was a physical but not violent game by being overly fussy and missing key infractions. But, despite this, being real football fans and suckers for punishment, I'm sure we'll be back for more. Final: CD Montesinos 2 – 2 Atletico de Catral CF The Full Monte sponsored the game, and El Presidente Eddie awarded Man of the Match to TONI. Match Report by Steve Robinson
