Herd immunity might mean no masks by August Experts predict that herd immunity may allow us to get rid of masks by as soon as August. The speed of the rate of vaccination in the Valencian Community could mean that 70% of the population will be

vaccinated by the end of summer. Herd immunity, explained Public Health expert Salvador Peiró, is calculated in the case of Sars-Cov-2 as 70% of the total population. “We consider that with 70% of immunized people, the

reproduction rate will be below 1 and the virus will eventually become extinct,” he said. Herd immunity acts as a collective protection. As vaccines significantly slow down transmission (above 80% on average), even if 30% of the population is without immunization, those 30% can still mix with people who do have the vaccine without much risk. 2.4 million Valencian Community residents will need to be vaccinated in order for the 70% goal to be reached. According to forecasts, if the rhythm of the Continued on page 3

Vaccinations for 4050 year olds likely in mid June

Continued from page 1

Health officials in the Valencian Community will begin to vaccinate the 40 to 50 year old age group in mid-June, it has been revealed. President of the Generalitat, Ximo Puig, announced that June will be the key month in the vaccination calendar in the provinces of Alicante, Valencia and Castellón. The president made his remarks after participating in a meeting to monitor the vaccination process, which was also attended by the Vice President and Minister of Equality and Inclusive Policies, Mónica Oltra, and Minister of Universal Health and Public Health, Ana Barceló, in addition to senior officials and technicians from the health department. Puig revealed that on June 17, vaccination persons aged between 40 and 50 will begin, and prior to this, during the first fortnight of the month officials expect that all those over 50 years of age will have received at least one dose or will already be fully vaccinated. Ximo Puig was keen to highlight that the Valencian Community has exceeded

2 million vaccines administered to date. 16% of the population already has the complete regimen and one in three in the Valencian Community (33%) has received at least one dose. He explained that the vaccination process is progressing "at a good pace", saying that in just one week, a record figure of 290,000 doses administered had been reached. Puig also pointed out that 267,000 doses were received last week, and that a total of 433,000 more are expected to arrive during the last two weeks of May, in addition to those distributed by Janssen, which are yet to be added to the official count. The president of the region also wanted to highlight the "excellent humane treatment and professionalism" of the health workers who are vaccinating; the "efficient coordination" of all logistics; as well as the "massive confidence of the Valencian society" in the vaccination process that he has described as "safe, agile and efficient".

current vaccination rollout is maintained, this figure could be reached by August 31st, fulfilling initial government forecasts of herd immunity by the end of summer. However, other indicators mean that this could be even earlier as more doses arrive and the issuing of appointments is ramped up over the summer months. Spanish government officials maintain that the wearing of a mask will be obligatory until herd immunity is reached and the situation and legislation will be then reviewed. Currently, a mask is mandatory in all closed and open public spaces, and while in natural open spaces such as the beach or countryside, it depends on whether the safety between people can be maintained. Experts believe that mandatory mask wearing could disappear sooner than most of us think. Rafael Toledo, Professor of Immunoparasitology at the University of Valencia said, “With 40 or 50% vaccinated, restrictions could be greatly reduced because even if the virus continues to circulate, it will do so in sectors that do not suffer from the disease.”

What happens if you’re on holiday when your vaccine appointment comes through? A question being considered by many of the people not yet vaccinated - especially since people in Spain are being encouraged to take holidays ‘at home in Spain’ this summer - What happens if I am on holiday when I get a text through with my vaccine appointment? News emerged this week that health authorities in the Valencian Community will this week begin vaccinating 51 to 59 year olds. Despite supply issues for some of the vaccines, the vaccination campaign in the region is progressing at a steady rate. It is expected that in mid June, 40 to 50 year olds will be issued with vaccine appointments (See page 3 of this week’s Costa Blanca People). Much of the population is looking forward to returning to some sort of normality this summer and that includes taking a holiday away from home. With June, July and August the three most popular months for holidays, it is expected that some of us will get the call during the height of summer. If Janssen delivers on its expected 400,000 doses for the Valencian Community as agreed during June, July and August, even more appointments can be

issued during the busy summer months. This vaccine will allow immunization with a single dose to almost 40% of the population. Health officials want 33 million Spaniards to be vaccinated before the end of August and plans to accelerate vaccination during the summer. So it is very likely that many ‘Valencians’ will begin to receive text notifications of appointments on their mobile phones right in the middle of their summer break. The Ministry of Health has anticipated this exact circumstance and it seems that it has already prepared a protocol to keep up the rhythm of vaccine appointments without patients having to sacrifice their holiday, or having to change summer plans at the last minute. Health officials explained that if a patient receives a text message with an appointment and is on holiday (or cannot attend at the agreed time for an important and

justifiable reason), they can simply notify their local health centre and their appointment will be passed to another patient and they themselves go back on the waiting list. The Health Department insists that everyone who misses an appointment will be summoned again to be vaccinated. When the patient notifies that they will not be able to attend the appointment, they will move back on to the waiting list and when all the people in that age group have received the vaccine, Health will resume issuing appointments of those who could not receive the vaccine in the first round.

Local beaches among best in the world A year ago Spain was awarded 589 blue flags for its beaches and another 99 for its yacht marinas and leisure ports, giving a total of 688; quite an achievement for the start of a summer which had been preceded by three months of total lockdown and was still facing major restrictions, including what was looking to be (and in the end, was) an almost total absence of foreign holidaymakers. But even with this being the second year running that involved stringent safety criteria to prevent the spread of Covid-19 as part of the blue flag conditions, Spain has once again surpassed itself with a whopping 713. Of these, 615 are for beaches, 96 for ports and marinas, and two for tourist sailing vessels. And once again, Spain is the world leader for blue flags – it has been non-stop for 34 years now – even beating much larger countries with considerably more coast. Alicante province has the most blue flags, and Málaga has gained more than any other. As has been the situation now for many years, the region with the most blue flags is the Comunidad Valenciana on the east coast, at 137, followed by Andalucía with 115, but this is generally expected, as they are the largest two coastal regions and, in the case of the Comunidad Valenciana, is the only mainland region of more than one

Fugitive arrested in Formentera del Segura The National Police have arrested an Italian fugitive who was hiding in Formentera del Segura. Of the four-and-a-half-years originally received, the man still has 3 years and 7 months to serve. The first investigations into his whereabouts made it possible to find out that the fugitive was hidden in the province of Alicante and officers were then able to locate his home in Formentera del Segura, where a comprehensive operation was put into place, which eventually led to his arrest.

Hacienda mistakenly seizes 8,431m2 of Torrevieja streets The Spanish Treasury has started an action against a bankrupt real estate company that is said to have contributed land as roads 30 years ago. The roads still appear in the name of the real estate company and now tax officials have seized the ‘assets’ of the bankrupt firm. The town hall has already begun proceedings to lift the measures against land that is now developed and working public roads in the town. A report emerged on Sunday claiming that the Treasury has seized over 8431 square metres of public roads because the municipality doesn’t have most of its streets registered in the property registry. The embargo affects some sections within the blocks between Calle Bilbao, Calle Hurtado Romero, Calle El Huerto, Calle San Policarpo and Ronda César Cánovas, along with the Inmaculada Public School and the

Parque de las Naciones. The Treasury embargo, which is in the process of being resolved, was not actually issued to Torrevieja City Council, but rather to the company that still appears as the owner of the land on which these streets and buildings were originally developed. The company, Torrevieja 93, is a former real estate business reported to have numerous tax debts. When the area was developed in the early nineties, this company contributed the land on which the roads are built. The town hall incorporated the roads into its inventory, but did not de facto register them in the property registry. Hence, when the tax office wanted to collect the debt from the real estate company, it seized the assets that were still in its name. Legislation (until the mid 90s) did not require the registration of the land as a

public asset once it was handed over to the town hall. Simply incorporating them in the municipal inventory was deemed sufficient. However, during the last twenty years it has been a legal requirement for land such as this to be registered. The report claims that in Torrevieja, only the main street (Calle Ramón Gallud) and some of its surrounding streets are registered. Every year, municipal technicians warn of the need to carry out this registration process which requires technical reports to verify the situation on the ground so that the data on paper can be confirmed and the land incorporated into the registry. The report, which appeared in Sunday’s Información claims that in Torrevieja there are many more inconsistencies between urban planning and the actual situation.

Flamingos return to nest in Torrevieja

Age Concern needs a volunteer driver to cover Wednesday mornings. Must have a Spanish Licence. Please contact 966786887 for an appointment.

A happy outcome of last year’s lockdown was the historic nesting of hundreds of mating pairs of flamingos, a phenomenon which hadn’t happened in almost 40 years. The flamingos arrived weeks ago to the salt lake in Torrevieja and it had appeared they left again. However, they had actually simply moved to a less visible area. Now, the group has moved to the central wetland and appear to be nesting there, just as they did last year for the very first time. According to Amigos de los

Humedales del Sur de Alicante (AHSA), the rains this spring and the drop in salinity have allowed an increase in brine shrimp, an arthropod on which the flamingos feed. According to AHSA, some 500 flamingos have been observed in the same area where they nested last year. The central wetland is used by heavy machinery for the salt harvest but it is hoped that the company in charge of salt extraction will respect this exceptional phenomenon.

Fight over drugs Orihuela audits its leads to shooting playgrounds The Orihuela National Police have arrested a 37-year-old man who tried to kill a 53-year-old man. The victim was dumped out of a vehicle, badly wounded, in a remote location. The events took place in November 2019 when someone walking their dog noticed the badly injured man on the outskirts of Orihuela. The man immediately alerted the emergency services, and the National Police were called to the scene. When they saw the severity of the wounds, they activated the Protocol of Action against Violent Crimes to assist the victim, protect the crime scene and collect all possible information to establish what has happened. The wounded man was bleeding profusely from his head and legs, and although he was not a Spanish speaker, he managed to explain to the officers that he had been shot. The man was rushed to hospital where they managed to stabilise him. Doctors told the officers that the man had suffered two gunshots to the femur and a blunt force blow to the head. Given the

circumstances, the Local Scientific Police unit collected forensic evidence from the clothing and nails in case a fight with the attacker had left vital clues as to his identity. The officers began their investigation by looking for similar crimes, determining after many months of work who the

mystery attacker was. Verification of the identity was confirmed by the results of the DNA samples collected as the alleged perpetrator had been detained on previous occasions in which DNA samples had been taken. By logging the new data obtained from the victim's nails and clothes into the National Police database, the program recognised the fingerprints as those previously taken in

connection with other crimes and it was a definite match. Once the attacker’s identity was known, an operation was started to locate and arrest him. This was an investigation that was difficult to carry out since the detainee frequently changed his address. Finally, after several surveillances and liaisons with the international police services, the alleged perpetrator was arrested in mid-March in the town of Crevillente. He was an extremely violent man, with a diverse history of robbery, injuries and drug trafficking, among others. It had only been two months since he had been released from jail after spending more than a year inside for another crime. The victim, who had initially been uncooperative, finally told officers what had happened and admitted that he had gotten into the man's car to buy drugs. Once in the car, he tried to steal the money and they started fighting which ended with the shooting. The detainee, of Moroccan nationality, was placed at the disposal of the Court of Instruction for Crevillente.

The Department of Infrastructure for Orihuela City Council, led by Councillor Ángel Noguera, has received the results of the study it commissioned from AIJU (Association for Research of the Related and Related Toy Industry) on the 150 playgrounds in the municipality of Orihuela. This study, carried out for the first time across Orihuela, cost € 17,242.50, took 12 months to complete and included a safety evaluation, inspection and certification of the games and equipment in the playgrounds of the municipality, mainly focused on items such as swings, springs, slides and synthetic tile coatings. Councillor Noguera said: “Based on these reports, an action plan is being prepared with the

corresponding assessment to begin adapting safety regulations and in order to make playgrounds more inclusive. Priority will be given, above all, to the arrangement and improvement of children's areas that are in worse condition and with greater possibilities of use due to their proximity to residential areas.” The Oriolano Municipal Parks and Gardens Service is also working, based on the information collected, on the possible decision to keep or not keep any of these spaces in locations where they do not serve their purpose because they are not attached to areas with any houses, due to the lack of urban development originally planned. The estimated cost of the

necessary replacements will serve the council to make a map of the parks throughout the municipality, design a coordinated and effective maintenance service and adequately budget for both replacements and maintenance annually according to economic possibilities of the area. In addition to improving the safety of children's play areas based on this study, maintenance work is routinely carried out on children's areas and their surroundings throughout the year to prevent widespread deterioration. Special emphasis is placed on the necessary collaboration and support of the local community to conserve parks as they are vital to the enjoyment of families.

When a buyer walks in, how will they see your home? Will the condition of your property be inviting, repellent, or neutral? Neutral means nothing special. We want the buyer to KNOW your home is something special when they first set foot inside! Remove, fix, paint, or patch anything that makes the house look as if it isn’t ready to be sold. Present your home in its best condition, competitively priced with the best terms available, and the sale will be much more fluid. Home buyers seek a fresh, clutter-free environment with which to fall in love, one that appears to be well cared for and in good repair. As in fine dining, presentation is everything! In today’s world, preparation applies to the virtual environment, too. The average home buyer has already spent hours on the Internet searching for homes. They’ve watched the virtual tour and have seen inside your living room. Online, the photos may make your house look like a showroom or a model home. Will the on-site tour live up to the online images?

Both impressions are equally important. The condition of your property starts with clear pictures on the Internet, professional photography that captures all the positives, diminishes any negatives, and relays visually stimulating scenes in every area of your home. By continuing this same mindset with the first face-to-face visit with the home, you create confidence with the prospective buyer and build upon that initial image of credibility. This is a home they liked online, and when they visit this becomes a home they like when they’re standing inside it. Real estate agents call it curb appeal! There’s that 10-second rule when meeting people, where you sum up who they really are immediately… that first impression. Houses are the same. Make sure your home is inviting, and have it cleaned from the curb to the front door. Once the buyer enters, let nothing be offensive or disorganized. Pay attention to the details! How does it smell? Make sure there’s no odour, clutter, picture, sound, or furnishing that is overpowering. Make every detail positive and memorable. Department of Culture presents ‘Music in Spring’ Mar Ezcurra, Councillor for Culture, has launched the "Music in Spring" festival, a wide and varied program of concerts in which bands and musical associations from the municipality of Orihuela will entertain local residents across the municipality. "The Department of Culture has developed this musical program that will take place both in Orihuela, some districts and the coast across May and June with the aim of offering an alternative cultural leisure activity for weekends," explained Ezcurra, who also explained that this music festival will financially help bands and musical associations by providing paid work during the still difficult times we face

due to the Covid-pandemic. This festival includes 14 concerts that will be held on weekends, at 8pm and in Orihuela Costa they will take place on the Promenade of Playa Flamenca. The performances will be free of charge to enter until full capacity is reached and will comply with all pertinent sanitary measures. Environment Councillor travels to Valencia to demand solution to cactus invasion The Councillor for the Environment for Orihuela, Dámaso Aparicio, travelled to Valencia to demand an urgent solution to eradicate the invasion of the Arizona Cactus in the Sierra de Orihuela, which has already spread to the Monte de San Miguel and the urban area. Councillor Aparicio registered an urgent request that the Agriculture Department carry out a project to put an end to this plague. The PP Councillor said: “If the authorities do not act and continue ignoring this proposal, we will file a complaint with the EU with a possible sanction to the Government of Spain for not continuing with the project." For about 40 years the Sierra de Orihuela has been colonised by an aggressive invasive exotic species, known as “cardenche” or “Arizona Cactus” that causes significant losses. Between 2010 and 2013, important works were carried out for its control with European funds, achieving 99 percent of its extinction but now, due to the neglect of the autonomous administration and the total absence of any maintenance, it is once again present in the mountains, progressively expanding to other nearby

areas, such as Monte de San Miguel and the Orihuela Palm Grove. Dámaso Aparicio denounced the attitude of "laziness and passivity" of the Valencian government. He said: “The cactus, under a so-called green government, is expanding uncontrollably. We have been warning for a long time that, as long as there is no action it will become an impassable area and a problem for the surrounding fauna. Not only is the incompetence of the Ministry expanding through the mountains, but it has reached the urban edges of the city and threatening the BIC palm grove of Orihuela, the second most important in Europe. It is necessary to act at once.”

Living in Spain but still have a UK based financial adviser? By Sam Kelly DipPFS, EFA, BA (Hons) Managing Partner Chorus Financial

Chorus Financial are receiving an increasing number of enquiries from those of you living in Spain looking to move your pensions and investments to a local financial adviser. A number of those enquiries were directly prompted by the UK adviser themselves, who had informed those clients that they could no longer advise them due to Brexit. There is a lot of confusion in this area so I will do my best to share what we know so far. Before Brexit, the Spanish investment, insurance, and pensions regulators – the DGS and CNMV – allowed UK regulated entities to advise those of us living in Spain through the freedom to provide services regime or by means of an establishment. When Britain left the EU, those rights were removed for UK based firms. In preparation for Brexit Spain published Article 13 of the Royal Decree Law (which you can read here: http://www.cnmv.es/Portal/Brexit/FAQRDL.aspx?lang=en). Within this, the CNMV have confirmed

that, according to Article 13(3) of the RDL, “contracts for the provision of banking, securities, insurance or other financial services, pursuant to which an entity provides services in Spain while domiciled in the United Kingdom”… “will remain valid provisionally, until 30 June 2021, in order to carry out the necessary activities for an orderly termination or transfer of the contracts concluded prior to 1 January 2021”. In more colloquial terms, this is saying that for any existing business with your UK IFA, they can continue to provide service to you until 30th June 2021. This extension is granted to allow time to either end your relationship, or for your IFA to transfer you to an entity that can provide advice in Spain. I wanted to further clarify this with the FCA, so sent them some direct questions, and they were kind enough to respond as follows: “Firms intending to do business with persons resident in the EEA need to ensure they do so consistently with local laws and local regulatory expectations. Whether a firm can provide services to Spanish clients (whether ex-pat or otherwise) is a question of Spanish law.” With this response the FCA are stating that it is the country where you are resident that sets its rules, which supports the Spanish regulator’s position in terms of advising those of us who live

in Spain. So where does this leave you if you still have a UK IFA? Well, the first place to start is by speaking with them directly. It may be the case that their firm have set up a subsidiary in the EU and that through that entity they are able to continue to advise you here in Spain. For many of you who will find yourselves looking for a new financial adviser because of these changes there are some steps you can take. The FCA have set incredibly high standards for UK advisers, and this means the advice you will have been receiving over the years will likely have been transparent, appropriate and from a fully qualified adviser. You should expect that standard to continue here in Spain. In simple terms, transparency means your adviser should go out of their way to fully detail all charges you will be exposed to, and of those charges, exactly how much they will receive. I would expect this to be detailed in both % terms and in monetary values. Remember, many products and funds in Spain still pay advisers non-disclosed commissions, something that was made illegal in the UK many years ago. This can make your overall fees incredibly high. One big clue is that if a product has a tiein, for example 5, 8 or even 10 years, then it will be paying an initial commission to that adviser, and we’ve seen those as high as 8% of your investment value. You

should always be offered an option with no tie-in or exit penalties. When it comes to qualifications, there are several bodies an adviser in Spain could be qualified from, and all of these have online registers where you can confirm your advisers’ credentials. With myself, as an example, I am both UK and Spanish qualified. You can find me on the UK register at https://www.thepfs.org/membership/m ember-search/ which covers all those UK qualified advisers registered with the CII and PFS. You can also find me on the Spanish register at https://www.efpa.es/busca-tu-asesorfinanciero-certificado. Again, in Spain it is possible for someone to operate as a financial adviser without having any qualifications, so it is important that you confirm the advice you are receiving is from someone who is appropriately qualified. Ask your financial adviser to confirm which register they are on and what formal qualifications they hold so you can verify this independently. Of course, if you really want to be sure, then speak to a Chorus Financial adviser for a recommendation – this is always free and without pressure or obligation, so you can explore your options and make the best decision for you. Gun seized as Formentera thief arrested The alleged perpetrator of two aggravated robberies in Formentera del Segura has been arrested. Guardia Civil arrested a 47-year-old man, the alleged perpetrator of two home burglaries. Both robberies took place in Formentera del Segura and in once incident, the residents were at home, creating widespread social alarm in the vicinity. The events date back to October of last year when the Guardia Civil learned of a violent robbery at a home in which the owner was injured. The thief broke into the house and was surprised by the owner while he was in the process of

stealing jewellery and other valuables. When the owner tried to confront him and retrieve his belongings, he was attacked by

the thief with the very same tool that he had used to force entry into the house. The homeowner sustained injuries to his arms.

Days later, there was another robbery at a home with a very similar modus operandi, but this time the thief was not disturbed and managed to steal a mountain bike, which was later recovered, among other items of value including a game console. After a lengthy investigation, eventually in April of this year, officers located the man near his home and he was arrested. During the arrest, the suspect tried to remove a firearm, a compressed air revolver, from his belt without success. The gun was seized and the man brought into custody. He appeared in court the next day and was released with charges.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP Sterling climbed after the UK elections, outperforming its closest rivals, the US dollar and the euro. As markets have responded to a combination of election results, the easing of lockdown restrictions and the continuation of vaccine rollout success, investors have welcomed the further alleviation of imminent risk. As a result, the pound gained confidence, climbing close to 1.41 against the US dollar – the highest since February – and almost 1.16 against the euro on Monday. With the UK economy set to reopen further in just a week’s time, hopes are high for additional economic progress in the coming months. The UK economic data was constructive or neutral, with no significant verbal interventions by the government or the Bank of England. Overall sterling was the top performer among the major currencies, with an average gain of 1.2% and no losses. Compared with a month ago the pound is an average of 0.9% firmer, beaten only by the Canadian dollar. The strongest UK data came from residential property. The Halifax house price index went up by 1.4% in April, putting the average price at £258k, a record high. Prices are 8.2% higher on the year. The RICS UK house price balance jumped to +75%, its highest level in more than 40 years as demand far outstripped supply. A stack of UK ecostats on Wednesday morning came in mostly better than

expected. The trade deficit for March was smaller than anticipated. Industrial and manufacturing production were well ahead of forecast. The decline in first quarter gross domestic production was revised from -1.6% to -1.5%. EURO There was almost nothing in contrast from Europe to influence buyers or sellers of the euro. Figures from the EU showed Italian industrial production increased by an annual, and rather Covid distorted, -37.7% in March. However, ZEW’s surveys of economic sentiment – investor confidence – revealed improvements in Germany and the Eurozone. But while data from Britain and the USA arrived by the bucket-load, the numbers from Europe were more of a trickle. The 10.9% annual increase in industrial production lost impact in the same way as almost all comparisons between the first lockdown and the recent economic reopening. The same was true of the European Commission’s updated economic forecast: it came as no surprise to see “a significant upgrade of the growth outlook”, for all the obvious reasons. Perhaps the biggest driver of the euro was the changing fortunes of the US dollar, which ended last week badly and recovered somewhat this Wednesday. The euro came out of that contest best, but only to the tune of a fifth of a US cent. Overall it strengthened by an average of 0.4%, losing almost a cent to the class-leader, sterling.

Spain planning selfemployed Social Security contributions Spain’s Social Security system could be about to change. Negotiations underway with employer and worker representatives may lead to a new multi-tiered system of contributions for the selfemployed based on annual revenue, as well as new benefit reduction rates for early retirement. Paying contributions based on real income, rather than a fixed monthly amount regardless of how much they make, has been a longstanding demand by some leading freelancer associations, although not everyone agrees. Social Security Minister José Luis Escrivá has made the proposal to the main labour unions UGT and CC OO as well as to the employer groups CEOE and Cepyme, the contents of which are detailed in a 14-page document. Although a deal has been described as “imminent,” ministry sources cautioned that there are still several options on the table, and that this may not be the definitive text. The document also details new benefit reduction rates for early retirement: there would be a reduction of up to 21 percent for people who stop working 24 months before their full retirement age, and 2.81 percent for those who stop one month early.

Social Security Minister José Luis Escrivá

Also under the new rules, there would be 13 contribution brackets for the self-employed, who would pay a monthly amount anywhere between a minimum of €90 up to a maximum of €1,220, depending on their income. There are substantial changes to the way the self-employed pay into the system. Right now, with a few exceptions, it is possible to choose one’s contribution base, which in turn determines the monthly fee to pay, regardless of actual income. There is a minimum payment to make even for the lowest earners. Right now, 85 percent of Spain’s self-employed have opted for the lowest available contribution base, which is €944. This amounts to a monthly payment of around €250 or more for most freelancers.

By comparison, the lowest base for salaried employees is €1,108, although the employer covers much of that contribution. Instead, Escrivá is proposing the creation of 13 contribution brackets based on the selfemployed worker’s income. The new system would be introduced next year, although its effects would not be felt until 2023, and there would be a transition period spanning nine years. Under this system, the selfemployed would choose their contribution base according to their estimated revenue, and they could alter this up to six times a year. In the event of a mismatch between contributions and real revenue at the end of the year, contributors would either make an additional payment or request a refund.

Body of missing Irish expat found Those searching for missing expat Suzanne Knowles, missing since last weekend, found her lifeless body nor far from her home of Forna, 20 miles inland from Denia. Her children had flown to Spain the night before her body was found, desperate to find their mother. A large number of volunteers searched routes and places where they thought the

woman – missing since 8th May – could be found. Suzanne, 51, had told friends she was going to buy a horse and the alarm was raised when she failed to return and did not answer any of the calls made to her phone. She was last seen a few miles from her home in her beige Fiat van. Once the alarm was raised the Guardia Civil issued a speedy ‘disappeared’

message on social media in an effort to find her. It appears that Suzanne’s body has been at the location where it was found since Saturday. However, no further information on the cause of death has been given, but it is believed that no third parties were involved and police are not looking for anyone else in connection to the death.

Young man accused of drugging girl at Alicante disco The Provincial Court is presiding over the case of a young man accused of having abused an 18 year old girl who was celebrating a birthday party with friends in a nightclub in Alicante. The man is also accused of putting a drug in the girl’s drink. The Prosecutor's Office is asking for six years in prison for a crime of sexual abuse. The defendant told the court during the trial that both he and the girl were kissing each other, and that they did not have intercourse, nor did he put any type of substance in the drink to put her to sleep. The alleged incident is believed to have taken place in the early hours of August 12, 2017 in a nightclub in the centre of Alicante. The victim, who was 18 years old at the time, was celebrating a birthday with a group of friends, and they

had been drinking at various venues in the city before arriving to the nightclub in question. The prosecution maintains that the defendant, who was also 18 at the time, took advantage of the fact that the victim was drunk to put a narcotic in her drink. The prosecution claims that the drug left the girl unconscious and alleges that the accused took advantage of this moment to take her away to a place where a sexual assault is

thought to have taken place. Once he finished, he is alleged to have dressed her and dropped her off at the tram stop to go home. The victim could hardly remember anything from that night. After blood tests, a drug called Tramadol was found in her system, which is a synthetic opiate drug that depresses the nervous system and is sold on prescription at the pharmacy. Forensic doctors who testified at the trial were not able to pinpoint the moment at which the girl may have consumed the drug. One of the elements that made the girl suspect that she had been a victim of abuse that night is that she had been wearing a tampon, which she believes was removed during the assault. She also had a missing piercing and a small wound where the piercing had been.

Spain to welcome Brits The Spanish minister for industry, commerce and tourism, Reyes Maroto, has said that British tourists could begin to visit Spain once more from 20th May onward, provided that the authorities in the United Kingdom place the popular vacation destination on its coronavirus “green list” of countries. Speaking at a press conference held after the weekly Cabinet meeting, Maroto said: “We know what we have to do to allow British people to travel to Spain, which is to lower the cumulative incidence and keep on vaccinating.” The statement comes ahead of the European Union’s plans to relax restrictions on non-essential travel from countries outside of the EU where the 14-day cumulative number of cases per

100,000 inhabitants is lower than 100. In the UK, this data point currently stands at 48. Currently, Britons cannot travel to Spain unless for a series of exceptional reasons, and if they can take the journey must present a negative PCR test on arrival in the country. Those returning from Spain to the UK, meanwhile, must also provide a negative test on arrival, quarantine for 10 days and take two Covid-19 home tests. Maroto added that citizens entering Spain from the United Kingdom from May 20 were likely to be excluded from the requirement to provide a negative PCR test on arrival given that the cumulative incidence of the virus in the country is currently very low. The vaccination process in the UK began earlier than it did in European countries such as Spain,

and its progress has had a marked effect on the epidemiological curve. The UK government last week announced the creation of a “green list” of 12 countries and territories to which its citizens will be able to travel from 17th May onward. These include Portugal, Gibraltar and Israel, but for now exclude Spain, France and Greece. The list is due to be revised every three weeks. More than 18 million British tourists travelled to Spain in 2019, making up the biggest group of foreign visitors, according to news agency Reuters. The arrival of the coronavirus pandemic saw these numbers fall to just 3.2 million in 2020, with the restrictions on travel causing an 80% fall in international tourism to the country.

Rare bird offered protection Virtual dog walk raises important Torrevieja town hall has taken a series of measures to safeguard the nesting of the rare and protected bird ‘Chorlitejo Patinegro’ or as it is known in English the Kentish Plover. The town hall, in collaboration with the Department of the Environment and the Provincial Coastal Service, has been working in recent months to safeguard a nesting site in the dunes of the "Molino del Agua". After the successful nesting of the Kentish Plover (Charadriusalexandrinus) in "Molino del Agua" area of La Mata in Torrevieja last year, the Department of the Environment of the town hall has redoubled its efforts to ensure that local beaches can facilitate the nesting of this protected species. The plover is a small bird typical of coastal lagoons and beaches with dune systems. It is in danger due to steady population in recent decades. The Wildlife Service of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, Climate Emergency

and Ecological Transition and the Provincial Coastal Service of the Ministry for Ecological Transition have also collaborated in this initiative. In addition to issuing specific instructions to the beach cleaning service, an additional marker has been established, which will be removed once the main period of breeding of the species is over. Because the plover builds its nest directly on the sand, and because of its size and muted colours it is a difficult bird to detect. Because of this, it is very important not to cross the nesting area which is now temporarily limited in terms of access, and in addition, to try to separate ourselves as much as possible from the nesting area when we walk or sunbathe. The Councillor for the

funds for guide dog charity

Environment, Antonio Vidal, stressed that one of the main threats to the plover is loose dogs, which is why he appeals to all citizens, even though dogs are not permitted on that stretch of beach anyway, “if you do come early or late in the day to walk along the beach, on this stretch we ask that you bring your pets on a leash to prevent them from chasing the plovers.” Dogs playing in this manner “ can spoil a nest or harm the defenceless young.” "The beach cleaning services are also involved in this campaign to protect the plover, which will only be successful with the participation and involvement of the public," added the Councillor Vidal. At the end of the breeding season, the protection measures will be evaluated to try to improve on them next year, as part of a preservation campaign that the town hall intends to maintain over a long period of time. Before I depended on my wife and my children so much,

but now I am independent and I wish that many more people could have the same opportunity.’ Irene Garcia, Director of the ONCE Foundation in Fuengirola says that to breed, train and place a guide dog with someone, it costs approximately 35,000€. She was delighted to hear of the Specsavers Ópticas campaign and said that all contributions are welcome, as there is so much demand for guide dogs. Spain approves landmark employment law The Spanish Cabinet has approved a new royal decree that recognises food-delivery riders from digital platforms, such as Glovo and Just Eat, as employees and not self-employed workers. “Today is a day of great satisfaction,” said Labour Minister Yolanda Díaz at a press conference following the Cabinet meeting. According to Díaz, with the approval of the law, “Spain has become a world leader on this issue.” “The world and Europe are both looking to us,” she added. The so-called “Rider law” is the product of six months of negotiations between unions and business associations, which reached an agreement to reform the labour rights of food-delivery riders in March. These negotiations began after the Supreme Court ruled in favour of a former worker for Glovo last September, arguing that “the relationship that exists between a rider and the Glovo business is of a professional nature.”This was the first time that Spain’s top court had recognized food-delivery workers as employees, rather than being self-employed.

The Supreme Court ruling meant that Spanish businesses had a duty to reform labour relations with food-delivery riders. But if there were any doubts about their status, these have been eradicated by the new law. “This law protects the most vulnerable because it affects the young people of our country and that’s why what we are doing is so

important,” said Díaz. According to the labour minister, who is also a deputy prime minister, 16,794 people have had their work status regularized thanks to the efforts of inspectors. This has had an economic impact of €29 million, she said. The new law comes into force once it is published in the Official State Gazette (BOE). From that moment, businesses have three months – until August 12 – to

make the necessary changes to their working relationships with food-delivery riders. Many companies in Spain take advantage of what is known in the United States and the United Kingdom as the “gig economy,” a term that refers to workers who are self-employed and work temporary, flexible jobs such as delivering food from a range of establishments to customers. But in recent years, workers in this sector have been demanding recognition as salaried staff and petitioning for the corresponding rights, such as sick leave and paid vacation time. The new law, however only affects fooddelivery riders, not workers of other digital platforms, such as ride-hailing apps. The approval of the new law sparked varying responses from unions and business associations. Although the legislation is set to give fooddelivery riders more security, it has been rejected by the Delivery Workers United movement on the grounds that it will lead to job losses.

Fallas festival moved to September Luckily, all is not lost for this year's local Fallas festivals– they will merely take place six months late. Representatives of the region's biggest annual fiesta met with the Valencian government this week, and agreed the Fallas would go ahead between 1st – 5th September, 'Covid permitting'. By then, it is hoped most of Spain's regions will be on track with their plan of having at least 70 percent of their headcount vaccinated, and the Comunidad Valenciana calculates it could be onto low-risk residents in their 40s or even 30s by early September. Also, if the festival is held in the first week of that month, children and teens would not yet have gone back to school, and would be able to take part in the Fallas in full. Some changes will, of course, be made, the regional government says. Fiesta organisers are considering erecting the fallas, or colourful, house-sized papier mâché caricatures, on 31st August; this setting-up session is known as the plantà.

A socially-distanced prizegiving has been agreed to, since it is this competitive element that gives the 'edge' to the fiestas, determining which of the fallas are the favourites, and dictating the order in which they are set light to. The traditional flower-offering to the Virgin, or Ofrenda – where a giant wooden frame with Mary's head on is set up so that the bouquets, when slotted in one by one, make up her body and gown – will also take place, as this is one of the key events. Unlike in previous years, if the September Fallas plan is able to proceed, the Ofrenda will take

place over several days, so the groups of falleras, or 'fiesta girls' in traditional Valencian costume, can be much smaller, enabling them to keep a safe distance from each other. Finally, the cremà, or burning, would be on 5th September, when the fallas go up in flames one by one in order of losers to winners – an act which seems to be a travesty but, in fact, ensures the continuity of the festival as falla artists spend the best part of a year building them and would be out of a job if they did not have to make replacements for their annually-destroyed works.

Holly Willoughby to do Strictly? Wedding plans for Denise Van Outen Holly Willoughby has been mentioned in connection with Strictly Come Dancing and the 2021 series. It comes as Giovanni Pernice and Anton Du Beke spoke about their new venture and revealed the Italian professional dancer would choose the This Morning presenter as his celebrity partner if he had the choice. Could the mother-of-three represent the ITV magazine show on the popular BBC dance competition? Anton and Giovanni, who have an upcoming tour called Him & Me were asked to pick the "ideal dance partner" for each other. Giovanni said he had a "good one" for Anton and then named Great British Bake Off icon Mary Berry. "We would be the cherry on the cake!" Anton replied and his colleague added: "I like what you did there!" "Who would I pick for Giovanni?" Anton questioned. "If it was a same-sex partner... Luke Evans! "Or, I know who would be great... Holly Willoughby!" Giovanni replied: "I would love to dance with Holly Willoughby on the show. We would have so much fun and she would do amazing."

This isn't the first time Giovanni has mentioned Holly dancing with him on the show. Early last year, the professional dancer appeared on the show and was asked who his perfect partner would be. He said he didn't know

and Phillip Schofield then pointed at Holly, who said everyone was asking in her ear whether she was waiting for him to say her name. "I keep telling you, you have to do the show," Giovanni said. "I know," Holly replied. "You know I love the show, I'm a massive fan." Phillip insisted Holly "can

dance" and said she would be "great on there". Holly wouldn't be the only This Morning star to swap presenting for the dance floor; back in 2014, Alison Hammond performed with Aljaz Skorjanec on the BBC show. Then in 2017, Ruth Langsford was partnered with Anton while This Morning's resident doctor Ranj Singh also took part a year after Ruth in 2018 and he danced with Janette Manrara. As for what it has been like for Anton to work with Giovanni, he explained to North West End: "He has been the best, the loveliest. He loves the show Strictly Come Dancing and he understands the show is about his celebrity partner. He's so generous to them and he gets the best out of them, which is why he has done so well over the years. "Made so many finals... which I'm not jealous about at all!" As for what advice Anton gave Giovanni when he started on the show, the Italian revealed: "He said to always keep your feet on the ground. Everyone is replaceable, so enjoy, but stay grounded and don't become a diva!"

Denise van Outen and her longterm partner Eddie Boxshall recently opened up about their plans to get married. The Dancing on Ice star was asked how the idea came about, what sort of wedding they would like and when they are planning to tie the knot. When chatting to Denise about how their post-lockdown wedding plans were coming along, the star told Hello! magazine: "We haven’t made any plans yet, because we've always said we won't do a big wedding. It would be much more of a low key event, just close friends and family. I wouldn’t be wanting a massive church wedding or

anything. But we haven’t really planned anything because we don’t know what's going on with the numbers and what we can and can't have. "I think if we are going to do anything it will probably wait until next year because we are trying to get all of our house finished, so we said this year it might be a bit tricky. Plus, I'm so busy with work at the moment so by the time I finish my stint in my show it takes us into the winter and we don’t want a winter wedding so I suspect probably spring or summer next year." Denise had previously revealed that she was planning to propose to Eddie during the leap year, but

Denise Van Outen and Eddie Boxshall

unfortunately this didn’t happen due to the pandemic. For some women, a big part of a proposal is the ring, however Denise revealed that this isn’t something she is worried about. "We'd probably just do bands, we're not doing an engagement ring or anything. As much as I like nice things, I'm really not a materialistic person and I think people place far too much value on the size of a diamond to equate to how much someone loves you. To me that doesn’t make any sense. I think kindness and support is the biggest diamond any woman can have so I feel like I've already got a diamond."

Two sugary drinks a day can double young women’s risk of bowel cancer Drinking two or more sugary drinks a day more than doubles younger women’s risk of bowel cancer, researchers have warned. A new study found that each daily serving was linked with a 16 per cent higher risk of the disease. But it found that replacing sugarsweetened beverages with artificially sweetened drinks, coffee or milk led to a lower risk of disease. Cases of bowel cancer diagnosed before the age of 50, formally known as early onset colorectal cancer, have been increasing in many high income countries over the past two decades. In the US, adults born around 1990 run twice the risk of colon cancer and four times the risk of rectal cancer compared to those born around 1950. Scientists are not sure why, but suspect there could be a link to increased consumption of sugary drinks. However, it is known that sugar-sweetened drinks suppress feelings of satiety, so risk excess energy intake and associated weight gain. These drinks also prompt a rapid rise in blood glucose and insulin secretion, which, over the long term, can induce insulin resistance, inflammation, obesity and type 2 diabetes. Emerging evidence also suggests that fructose can impair gut barrier function and increase gut

permeability, which could promote the development of cancer. A team of researchers in the US examined data on sugarsweetened beverages among more than 95,000 women who had reported their consumption levels every four years. And around 41,000 of these women also had data of their sugary drink consumption in adolescence based on previous surveys. The team found that during the follow-up period, there were 109 cases of early-onset bowel cancer found among the study participants – meaning they were diagnosed under the age of 50. The study, published in the journal Gut, concluded that compared with people who drank less than one sugarsweetened beverage each week, women who drank more than two of these sugary drinks each day had a 2.2-fold higher risk of early bowel cancer. Replacing each serving per day of a sugar-sweetened beverage with an artificially sweetened drink, coffee, reduced fat milk or whole milk, was linked to a 17 to 36 per cent lower risk of bowel cancer, they added. "Sugar-sweetened beverage consumption may contribute to the rising incidence of early onset colorectal cancer," the team

wrote. "Reducing sugar-sweetened beverage intake and/or replacing sugar-sweetened beverages with other healthier beverages among adolescents and young adults may serve as a potential actionable strategy to alleviate the growing burden of early onset colorectal cancer." Dr Lisa Wilde, director of research and external affairs at Bowel Cancer UK, said: “This study further shines a light on the complicated relationship between our diet, lifestyle and risk of developing bowel cancer. Although the disease is much more common in the over 50s, each year more than 2,500 people under the age of 50 will be diagnosed with bowel cancer in the UK. The disease is the fourth most common cancer in the UK, every 15 minutes someone is diagnosed, but we know that around half of all bowel cancers could be prevented by having a healthier lifestyle. “Making simple changes to your diet like limiting sugary drinks, having plenty of wholegrains and fibre, avoiding processed meat and limiting red meat, being of a healthy body weight, having regular physical activity, stopping smoking and cutting down on alcohol can help stack the odds against developing bowel cancer.”

You’re drinking prosecco all wrong As warmer weather is upon us, it’s time crack open the prosecco. Typically, when we buy prosecco, it’s because we don’t want to spring for expensive champagne, but despite that, we still tend to pour it into a nice champagne flute to feel fancy. But it turns out, that’s not how to do the fizz justice. Prosecco has become quite a staple for many wine cupboards or cellars. Not only is the sparkling wine affordable, it’s packed with vibrant and crisp flavours of pear, melon, peach, honeysuckle, and apple - all things that remind us of a bright and sunny day. It’s also used in popular cocktails such as the Bellini. But if you’re drinking this fresh sparkling wine from a champagne glass, that is not the way to do it. If you want to serve the

sparkling goodness the correct way, you need to have a stemmed

glass with a wide rim and rounded bowl. This shape is a contrast to the narrow shapes of champagne flutes. So why exactly is a stemmed glass with a rounded

bowl and wide rim better? Narrow champagne flutes are strategically created to “minimise the wine’s actual surface area, so your bubbles have less room to fizzle out.” But a rounded body glass will allow you to catch a whiff of some of the aroma profile we outlined above. In research conducted by Statista, in 2020, 412.8 million bottles of prosecco were sold worldwide. Prosecco came from a town in Northern Italy called Prosecco and is created with Glera grapes, which have Slovenian origins. The production of the wine now extends to northeast regions such as Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia. Let’s be honest, you can drink your prosecco in a stemless glass, champagne flute, or regular cup if you like and it will still taste delicious!

Think outside the banana With everyone and their granny making banana bread during lockdown (or so it seemed), there was a surprising surge in recipes using banana skins. British chefs Nadiya Hussain and Nigella Lawson were among the many chefs who shared their surprisingly popular recipes involving banana peels. The publich were shocked when Nigella demonstrated a recipe from her latest cookbook, “Cook, Eat, Repeat,” on her BBC television show of the same name. Her fragrant cauliflower and banana peel dish caused quite a stir and even prompted newspaper headlines. “I certainly didn’t expect newspaper headlines about it!”remarked the chef, “It’s hard to overcome the cultural assumptions about what is and is not edible, and to start eating what we have customarily regarded as waste.” A few months before Nigella’s foray into the banana peel trend, Bake Off winner, chef and cookbook author Nadiya Hussain, appeared on a “Good Morning Britain”. While talking about cooking during lockdown, Hussain said “Everyone’s making banana bread,” as she offered tips on using scraps to avoid food waste. “Don’t chuck the (banana) peel away. Cook it up with some garlic and onions and barbecue sauce, stick it in a burger, and you’ve got, like, pulled pork, pulled chicken.” Banana skins have been popular among vegans since around 2019,

when recipes began circulating online for ‘bacon’ like recipes using banana peels. At around the same time, a recipe for banana peel pulled ‘not-pork’ had went viral, courtesy of Canadian blogger Melissa Copeland. Copeland had shared an article and recipe on her vegan recipe blog, The Stingy Vegan, accompanied with an explainer video on her Facebook page. Copeland revealed she had developed the banana peel recipe after learning that vegans in Venezuela use bananas’ outer jackets for an alternative to carne mechada (shredded beef), and in Brazil a similar swap is popular in a dish known as carne louca (or “crazy meat”). A few months after her original article was published, Copeland revealed that her recipe for ‘pulled peels’ had made it on to the menus of several restaurants in places as far away as Hawaii, Malta and New Zealand. Other popular recipes include Nigella’s cauliflower and banana peel curry as well as banana bread using the whole banana, which is reported to give a caramel like taste and a spongy texture to the bread. Of the banana peel, Nigella believes that “if you had to guess what the cut up banana peels were, without knowing, you’d be much more likely to think them related to aubergine.” If you’re brave enough to give it a try, here are a few easy recipes to begin with...

Banana Peel Vegan Pulled Pork (from the Stingy Vegan blog) Ingredients 2 medium organic bananas YELLOW, firm and not quite ripe 1 ½ tablespoons olive oil 1 teaspoon hot smoked paprika ¾ teaspoon chili powder ¾ teaspoon dry mustard ¾ teaspoon garlic powder ¾ teaspoon onion powder ¼ teaspoon cumin A few splashes of water 2 tablespoons vegan barbecue sauce A pinch of salt

Method • Wash the bananas well. • Slice the top and bottom off the bananas remove the peels. Scrape the white part off the inside of the peels with a spoon. • Shred the peels with a fork and cut them into 2 to 3 inch-long pieces. • Transfer to a bowl and add the olive oil, paprika, chili powder, mustard, garlic powder, onion powder and cumin. (It's important not to add salt yet). Mix well and set aside to marinate • Heat a pan over medium heat and add the shredded banana peels. Add a small splash of water to help them steam and

tenderize • The cooking time will depend on how ripe your bananas are (the riper they are the faster they cook). It’s important that they are tender enough to bite through but not so overcooked that they turn to mush. They should be done in around 5 10 minutes. Add a splash of water and keep cooking if the pan goes dry before they are tender • Add the barbecue sauce and give them another 30 seconds to a minute more to soak up the flavour. Add a pinch of salt to taste. Remove from the heat and let cool for a minute.

Nigella Lawson’s Cauliflower and Banana Peel Curry Ingredients 3 large banana peels, stems and bottoms trimmed 1 small cauliflower, trimmed into bite-size florets 1¼ teaspoons ground turmeric Fine salt 2 to 3 large shallots, peeled and roughly chopped 1 (3.8cm) piece fresh ginger, peeled and sliced into thick coins 1 fresh red chilli, quartered 4 fat garlic cloves 1 small bunch coriander, stems separated and reserved, leaves chopped ¾ teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 2 tablespoons tomato paste 1 (400g) can full-fat coconut milk 2½ tablespoons lemon juice 1½ teaspoons sugar 2 teaspoons flaky sea salt, plus more to taste

Cooked rice or flatbread for serving (optional) Method • Bring a large pot of water to a full boil. • Put the banana peels in a medium-large heatproof bowl. Pour in enough of the boiling water to cover, reserving the rest for cooking the cauliflower. • Add the cauliflower florets and leaves to the pot and boil for 5 to 7 minutes, or until fork tender. • While the cauliflower cooks, gently stir ½ teaspoon each turmeric and fine salt into the bowl with the soaking banana peels. Let sit until they’ve softened up and are cool enough to handle, around 30 minutes. • Meanwhile, once the cauliflower is tender, drain and set aside • Prepare the curry paste: Place the shallots, ginger, chilli, garlic, coriander stems,

cinnamon and the remaining turmeric into a measuring jug or wide jar that accommodates an immersion blender. Blend to a paste Drain the banana skins, squeezing out any excess liquid, and either chop them into slightly smaller-than-bite-sized pieces, or shred with a fork Heat the oil, add the curry paste and fry for 7 minutes (stirring continuously). Add the tomato paste, coconut milk, lemon juice, sugar and flaky salt. Cook, uncovered, for 5 minutes, letting it bubble, reduce and thicken a little. Add the banana skins to the pan, lower the heat and bring to a simmer for another 10 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened and the banana skins are soft. Tip in the cauliflower florets and leaves and cook until they’re hot all the way through. Scatter the coriander leaves on top and serve with rice or flat bread.

Sponsor a child this summer Children in Spain have nearly 12 weeks school holidays during the summer. Any parent who has at least one or more child at school knows how difficult, and expensive, it can be to keep them entertained during that time - imagine if you had 24 hungry teenagers! That's the task for the carers at the Elche Children's Care Home and the ECCH charity helps by providing the funds to take them on excursions at least once a week if possible to either the beach, fun park, cinema or even just out for a burger and ice-cream. Otherwise the children are confined to the home for most of the holidays which can be quite stressful, especially in the hottest months of the year.

At this time of year, ECCH volunteers and supporters are usually busy organising and attending fund raising events to provide the money for the summer outings. However, due to the current situation,

fundraising is difficult and the team are desperately trying to think of alternative ways to fund the children through summer. President of the charity, Michelle told the Costa Blanca People, “At the moment we have Garry Minton's sponsored 100 miles cycle ride on the agenda, which we hope you will support, but we also need to look for other ways of finding the money to ensure that we can give the children the summer fun they can usually expect from the ECCH supporters.” The charity is asking members of the public to sponsor a child for a day out or a summer treat, for as little as 10 euros - see image for details. Or if you are a group of friends or club you could join together and sponsor a group of children

I met my partner when he came to the restaurant every week where I waitress. We got chatting and got on well, but he didn't ask me out for four years even though I'd asked him out. Finally, after 5 years he started to show interest. I’d heard he was not to be trusted, and that he was keeping in touch with an old flame who messed him around. I worried that he only took up with me because he'd been dumped, but I ignored it. After a while I realised that he wasn't such a nice guy, and that he had two sides to him - he could be vile one minute, and cracking jokes the next to get me on side. Someone told me that he was still keeping in contact with the other woman; and I read messages from him to her that indicated that as far as he was concerned, it was not over and he hoped for a reconciliation but she was not interested unless he could pay for her trip. He even sent her flowers while we were going together, but never gave me flowers. I'd hear the rumours that this woman just used men in Spain for good times, but he told me it had been over for years, but that he was still a friend. I lent him a lot of money and he disappeared back to England he said to see his ‘family’ but he didn’t contact me once. It turned out he was still trying to woo this woman, on my money. He is overweight, and not all that, but he made me laugh. Now I feel like an idiot. It’s a shame you’ve wasted so much time on this person, but it takes time to really get to know someone, and how well do we really know the people we meet. We only know what they tell us, and it could be all lies. I think it’s always wise to listen to advice, just in case there’s some truth in it. Forewarned is forearmed. WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. Thirty in the City The Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, pointed out this week that the legal reform that limits the speed on streets with a single lane in each direction to 30 kilometres per hour “places Spain at the forefront of a global movement that, aligned with the Goals of Sustainable Development of the United Nations, wants our cities to be more humane, that our streets be streets of life and for life”. On Tuesday, May 11, the law entered into forcemodifying the Reglamento General de Circulaciónand introduced various new features in the regulation of urban traffic. One of the most important measures is the reduction of the generic traffic speed limit on urban roads from 50 to 30 kilometres per hour for those streets that have only one lane in each direction of movement. The objective is to reduce road accidents, especially those affecting the most vulnerable groups; guarantee the fluidity of trips made on the city's main avenues, and reduce the negative impact of vehicle traffic on air quality in cities. Grande-Marlaskaaccompanied the mayor of Valladolid, Óscar Puente, in the presentation of the information campaign promoted by the Valladolid municipal corporation on the occasion of the entry into force of the limitations, a campaign that is based on the slogan chosen by the General Directorate of Traffic with this same reason: 'At 30 there is more life'. Aligned with the UN The Minister of the Interior explained

that the reduction of the speed limit is not limited to seeking the reduction of road accidents, but is "one of the most important measures that Spain has approved in terms of mobility and road safety because it helps to build cities for its citizens, where the streets serve above all for living, it transforms our cities so that they are more humane". Grande-Marlaska recalled that the United Nations integrates road safety into its 2030 Agenda for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), specifically in areas related to climate action, gender equality, health and well-being, planning of sustainable cities and

communities, quality education, infrastructure, responsible consumption and production, as well as the reduction of inequalities. The United Nations has recommended the limitation of urban speed to 30 kilometres per hour in the Stockholm Declaration of February 2020, emanating from the Third World Road Safety Conference, and in the Resolution that the General Assembly approved on August 31, 2020 And on May 17, the Sixth World Week of the United Nations for Road Safety begins, convened with the slogan 'Streets for life' and the hashtag #Love30.

Abbey Anglers On Tuesday the 11th of May we fished the El Bosquet complex. Twenty two anglers took part but unfortunately I only have brief details of the match as I was unable to attend. What I do know is that normal service was once again resumed and the match was won by the undoubted venue specialist Neil McBernie. If you ever want to improve your match fishing then just watch this man in action on this venue. The key to his success is redoubtably his feeding and accuracy with a catapult which really has to be seen to be believed. Draw on peg 18 on the old back channel he caught lots of decent carp for 31.640kg. In second place was Tony Felstead with 23kg and in third place was Richard Wood with 20.750kg. The pairs competition was won by Neil and Alan Hill with 33.32kg. The match was run in very windy conditions and several anglers broke pole sections etc.

Rods N Reels The following day we again attended the same complex, a match that I participated in. 13 anglers took part and as no other pleasure anglers were on the complex we fished sections a1 to 7, 35 to 40 and 18 to 24. The match was completed in much better conditions than the previous day, with a light breeze and sunny conditions with temperatures around the 27 degrees mark.

Now this is getting boring, winner on the day was Neil Mcbernie with yet another master class. Draw on peg 6 he fished the pole across on maggots to take lots of carp, mullet and bass for 42kg. In second place was Bill Reade, who draw on peg 35 caught numerous carp, a sunfish, barbel and a tench for 29kg. In third place was Steve Higgins with 28.40kg from peg 1 The pairs competition was won by Neil and Jim Rouse with 47.78kg.Other section winners were Nick Bastock with 19.12kg from peg 20. Earlier in the week both clubs and several other volunteers attended the Embalse De Pedrera and made repairs to the access roads and the venue is now easily accessible near to the old entrance. Big thanks go out to all that gave up their time to complete these repairs. For further details please visit our website abbeyangling.es Ian Brown

Elche CF Take it to the Wire! This week Elche CF took three points away from a possible six as their struggle to remain in La Liga continues. On Tuesday evening there was a real opportunity for 3 points as the Franjiverdes faced fellow bottom of the table team Alaves. In this duel of fear for both sides, Alaves emerged as the victors. Right from the whistle they were impressive, reaching the goal line twice within the first three minutes. The away team scored from a corner on the 40th minute, with the ball bypassing the feet of 3 Elche defenders before being pinged in by Joselu. Their second goal came on the 54th minute, courtesy of a defending mistake by Josema, which allowed Joselu to steal the ball midfield and remain undefended until he reached the goal, where he crossed it to Rioja who punched it to the back of the net. In fact very little of a positive nature can be said about Elche's performance, except Boye's back footed air bourne strike, which could have been a game changer if it had not been saved by the Alaves keeper.

Hoping to boost moral, Elche's owner Argentinian Football Agent Christian Bragarnik, took an hour long midweek press conference focusing on the future of the club, including unveiling plans to develop the stadium and the club shop which returning fans can look forward to. In order to prepare for this, all articles are on sale now at just 9,95€! On a blistering hot Sunday Elche played Cadiz, against whom they have never won a La Liga match! Within 15 minutes Cadiz had scored from a penalty, but this was contrary to the run of play and would prove to be their one and only highlight. On the 49th minute VAR denied Pere Miller a goal citing the off side rule, but this was of little consequence. In the second half, Elche banged home 3 goals, their most impressive score of the season so far and dominated the game with

69% possession. The final match of the season will take place at the Martinez Valero on Saturday at 18:00 against 9th place Athletic Bilbao. Elche CF are in the relegation zone due to the head to head result with Huesca, who are on the same number of points. Huesca are managed by Pacheta who masterminded Elche through 2 promotions in 3 seasons. Elche's La Liga survival depends on them getting a better result than Huesca. Nail biting drama as Elche CF take it to the wire!! As soon as spectators are allowed back into the stadiums, EuroTourGuide will once again be offering Coach Tours with Match Tickets to support Elche CF. Hapless In Hondon Hondon Nieves "C" v CD Montesinos TEAM:- 13 Tommi, 3 Fernando, 5 Manu Rodenas, 8 German, 10 Alfredo, 14 Pamies, 16 Dani Saez, 20 Damian, 22 Toni, 23 Maccan, 24 Gocu. SUBs:- 2 Christian, 6 Adrian, 7 Trevino, 11 Kevin, 12 Barroso, 21 Paco. Played on what looked like a stretched out five a side pitch (the locals claim it was both the minimum allowed size AND all the local ayuntamiento could stretch the budget to), in the relentless heat of the early summer we seem to be enjoying, and set near the delightful village of Hondon, high in the Crevillente and Sierra de Algayat mountains, the match commenced with a furious bout of hoof ball where both teams attempted to do serious damage to the neck muscles of the watching crowd. Football, nope, it wasn't, it looked more like rugby, with players kicking into touch to gain territorial advantage, not at all pretty to watch. Neither team seemed to be able to embrace either the climatic conditions or the size of the pitch and it was only through a set piece, that the home side scored on 35 minutes (nice, clear, accurate clock on the side, thanks Hondon council) with a lashed shot at the back post from a corner, when sleepy defending allowed the Hondon winger way too much time and space.

The game then returned to its former state, with very little actual quality football from either side on display. Both teams equally guilty of overplayed/overhit, long balls. The busiest players on the pitch were both goalkeepers! The blessed relief of half time saw Hondon hold on and both teams trudge off as we all headed for some shade and a collective grumble HT: Hondon de Nieves C 1 – 0 CD Montesinos The second half opened with, yes you've guessed it, more of the same non-football. Monte lacked real bite up front and Toni, virtually playing as a lone striker, looked fed up and forlorn as he regularly chased his own knockdowns. Hondon had started to gradually impose themselves and on 55 minutes, a neat chip saw the home forward deservedly double their lead, clipping the through ball over the advancing Tommi in goal. Monte were going nowhere fast, or indeed slow, and even a sending off for Hondon mid way through the second (why do footballers think they can raise their hands to an opponents face? Madness!) didn't alter the likely final outcome. Monte had precious few genuine sights of goal, so poor was their attacking prowess, rather than coming up against a stout

defence. The final “coup de grace” was delivered on 82 minutes when, again from a corner Hondon made it three with a unchallenged header on the six yard box. Hondon conspired to miss several gilt-edged chances to possibly double their lead, but the game petered out, with the score remaining the same. Heading back out of the ground, someone pointed out that perhaps Monte were missing their home ground and the atmosphere and the music, other, wiser heads pointed out, perhaps hitting the nail on the head, they were simply missing how to play football. Well MotoGP never ceases to amaze does it? What a race in Le Mans. The rain played havoc with practice and then the race. Marquez kept us guessing, A strong performance in qualifying got him to 6th, his best since he Miller with the trophy came back but he was behind Quartararo, Viñales and Miller who occupied the front row. Miller led from the start and then the heavy rain came causing the riders to switch machines and chaos ensued. Miller picked up a double long lap penalty for speeding in the pit lane and Marquez got to the front after a very quick change but dropped it just as I was thinking of more superlatives for him. Miller battled it out with Quartararo for a few laps but once he got out in front it was all over. He’s gone from favourite to be replaced at Ducati to a real contender for the title. He now sits on 64 points with his back to back wins behind Quartararo (80), Bagnaia who crashed out (79) and Zarco who overhauled his French compatriot on 69. Two Frenchmen on the podium for the first time ever. World Superbikes starts this weekend and I can’t wait to see if anyone can

threaten reigning champ Jonathan Rea. He has identified his main challengers as Redding, Rinaldi, Toprak and Chaz Davies. I think it’ll be a cracking season. On the roads we had our first venture into Murcia for a long time this week. I love the road from Pinoso to Fortuna, it’s got everything, long straights, tight curves and fantastic views. There’s also a great place to stop in café Los Collares near Salado Alto. I also like a run to Santa Pola and to sit in a harbour side bar and watch the world go by. If you’re going to biker events or hosting them please let me know and I can publicise them for you, Free. Early warning for Sunday 20th June there is a concentracÍon in La Nucia. More details to follow. Any feedback or suggestions (polite ones only) by email at jacknottim@gmail.com Stay safe moteros, Jack (not Tim)

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Ah, the business end of the season where we start searching for some remaining business to make the footballing weekends vaguely interesting. Manchester City finally stumbled over the Premier League line thanks to Manchester United reserves not really being up to scratch. Leicester City made Gary Lineker cry by nicking the FA Cup from Chelsea thanks to a Tielemens thunderbolt. Fulham joined West Brom and Sheffield United as thoroughly condemned to Championship football next season. So what’s left then? Can we really get that excited by whether Liverpool can somehow find a way into the Champions League places? Will Leicester’s last seven days be enough to see them through to the end of the season meaning either one of Tommy T and King Kloppo won’t be among Europe’s elite next time around? Unless, of course, Tuchel learns how to win a cup final and lifts the Champions League trophy ahead of Peppy G in a fortnight. Having seen their top-four dreams fade and die, can West Ham burst their bubble sufficiently to avoid both the Europa League and the Europa Conference and, therefore, avoid a relegation battle next season? And what about Tottenham? Will their new gaffer prefer a nonEuropean season or a jaunt in an utterly pointless gig to kick start his reign? And who will he actually be? As mentioned, City were crowned champions by virtue of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reserves losing to Leicester on Tuesday. Resting the team made a lot of sense, given they’d want to beat Liverpool on Thursday but hey, the best-laid plans and all that. Peppy G treated his football family to some dancing, some beer and then, the best bit - some pizza - to celebrate regaining what was previously theirs. They then headed to St James’ Park to take part in a Premier

League classic, beating Manager of the Month Steve Bruce’s Newcastle 43 with a cheeky little hat-trick from Ferran Torres. Does Torres’ triple convince Pep even more that he can play as a nine? Meaning that it doesn’t really matter that Borussia Dortmund are reaching peak Borussia Dortmund levels with their claims that Erling Haaland is going nowhere this summer? That won’t please Noel Gallagher. In the distant past, an FA Cup Final would have been the lead in this column - but if football cannot be bothered to make it top priority in a weekend neither can I. If it is to be crowbarred in amongst many other matches, I will lose it somewhere in the middle of this malarky. But, massive congratulations to Leicester City who, against some odds beat Chelsea 1-0 at Wembley in front of 22,000 actual football fans. Chelsea were utterly toothless for the second game running, having contrived to lose to Arsenal 1-0 during the week, but take nothing away from the class shown by Brendan Rodgers’ team. The winner was a goal befitting a Cup Final - Youri Tielemens picking it up and absolutely larruping it past Kepa in goal. Naturally, as is their want, Chelsea fans talked of conspiracy forgetting that Ayoze Perez didn’t handball it according to the Laws of the game and that Ben Chilwell, no matter how harsh it might feel, was actually offside in the build-up to that very late nonequaliser. Kasper Schmeichel, a man with significant boots to fill, was a hero alongside young Wesley Fofana who marshalled the defence brilliantly mind you, on reflection, he only really had to mark Timo Werner. The win made Lineker cry - or, alternatively as suggested by Have I Got News For You, he’d just seen his tax bill. Tommy T’s wife might also be regretting her decision to change up her pre-match routine. Apparently, the manager’s missus felt that seeing as her hubby always loses a cup final

she might try something different. That’s going to make her decision on the day of the Champions League Final a must-know detail. Given the goal he was responsible for against Arsenal and his complete disinterest in closing Tielemans down at Wembley, the proposed swap deal seeing Jorginho head to Barcelona in return for Pjanic might catch Tuchel’s eye. He’d rather get Marco Veratti, though. Liverpool kept their outside chance to nip into 4th place alive with the last touch of the game at the Hawthorns. Alisson, having a challenging year, became the first Premier League player ever to score in tracky bottoms something that will now haunt Gabor Kiraly forever. Big Sham might have seen his proud record of never being relegated go up in smoke, but he’ll always have that point against at Anfield, right? Hal Robson-Kanu, an amalgamation of two of my favourite footballers of all time, incidentally, might wonder why nobody has let him start a match since 2017 after his lethal finish to put the Albion ahead. Mohamed Salah equalised, but this was all about Alisson and his bonce. Tottenham’s match against Wolves was considered an audition for Nuno Espirito Santos in some people’s eyes. His team did the eminently sensible thing in which case and lost - 2-0, Harry Kane in the goals again, obviously. What odds on Daniel Levy panicking in the summer and giving Ryan Mason the job? With Uncle Roy Hodgson likely to be announcing his departure from Crystal Palace in the next week, he’ll be able to look back on their 3-2 win over Aston Villa as one of their best attacking performances during his time there. Christian Benteke looked like the striker Tim Sherwood reckons he got a tune out of, Wilf Zaha and Andros Townsend ran riot and then there was Eze - a player who will be getting a few top-six phonecalls this summer for sure. Jack Grealish was back and notching up his 101st foul against him within 2.6 seconds of coming on the pitch.

Las Ramblas Golf Society With no game to report for Monday due to heavy rain I thought I’d take the opportunity to give an update on this year’s Club Championship. With five rounds having been completed (leaving just one more to play) the competition is fierce. Taking the best four scores so far into account Andy Martin leads the way in the men’s division with 152 points. Snapping at his heels with 150 is Dave Pulling and Paul Brown is still in the chase with 143 points. In the ladies section Petina Murray is way out in front with 154 and is followed by Andrea Martin on 143. Despite a disappointing round five Yvonne Phipps sits in third place on 136 points. Wednesday’s Stableford saw some very good scoring. MarjaOldenziel just

edged out Lindsay Forbes on countback with 39 points. Ron Phipps claimed the bronze with 38. Alan Douglas picked up a tidy sum of euros as he was the only player to score a ‘2’.

Friday’s format was ‘Change Partners’. Winning with 86 points were Olga Douglas, Bryan Neal, John Shervell and John Dobson. Just one point behind them were Paul Brown, Dave Pulling, Mike Brentnall and AnneMarie Weisheit. There’s plenty of drama to look forward to next week as we will be teeing up for this year’s Singles Matchplay Knockout Trophy. This week’s quote comes from none other than Arnold Palmer who commented, ‘I have a tip that can take five strokes off anyone’s golf game. It’s called an eraser’. Pues hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell

Burnley were confirmed as safe earlier in the week and their performance against a rampant Leeds would suggest they might have enjoyed a little too much dancing, real ale and hot pot in the coming days. Leeds smashed them in a way not many other than Leeds have enjoyed doing this season. Southampton and Fulham both put in performances that kinda summed up their respective seasons. Southampton, pretty good when it all comes together (also see their 3-1 win over Palace earlier in the week). Even Theo Walcott turned up. Fulham, pretty good for ten-minute spells which, as we all know, isn’t really enough to stay in the league. Sheffield United spent £20m+ on a young striker supposed to score the goals that kept them in the Premier League this season. On Sunday evening, a young striker scored his first goal for the club as they beat Everton (at Goodison Park, obviously) 1-0. Daniel Jebbison, not Rhian Brewster, opened his club account at the age of just 17 meaning he is now linked to every big club in the land. Everton? Well, they are just Evertoning themselves to 8th place now. It’s everyone out at Arsenal this summer (other than the manager, apparently) as Hector Bellerin, David Luiz, Bernd Leno, Ainsley MaitlandNiles (to United, really? Surely not), Granit Xhaka and many more being directed to the exit. This usually means some players are being targetted - and Arsenal are being linked to Europe’s hottest young central midfielder in France’s Eduardo Camavinga. Just the small matter of seeing off PSG, Juventus, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Barcelona to get that deal over the line. More likely is that Ryan Bertrand will join them on a free - be still those beating Arsenal hearts. Less likely is that Silent Stan will ever tell the truth - Daniel Ek, he of Spotify wealth, reckons he made quite an attractive offer to buy the club last week. Kroenke denies any bid was received. It’s probably more fun to believe Ek.

Lo Crispin Golf Society Claret Jug Twenty six members and one guest (11 year old son of one of our members) competed our 2nd. 'Major' of the season, the Claret Jug at La Finca Golf on 12th. May. The conditions for playing golf were good, except the wind, as it usually does, increased notably in the early afternoon. As usual also the course was generally in good condition and the greens fast. Following the game we made the short journey back to the Lo Crispin Tavern, where we were supplied with Tapas and the day's prizes distributed. The prize for the best Guest score, including those playing for handicap, was won by the son of one of our members Graham Ellis, Jamie Ellis with a score of 27 pts. off 36. Although unable to win the Claret Jug, as he was playing as a guest of his dad Jamie achieved the best score of the day with 27 pts.off 36. He, like everyone else, played from the yellow tees !
