Concern and confusion over green light for UK holidaymakers Spain has opened its doors to UK holidaymakers without quarantine, PCR tests or proof of vaccination. UK visitors were given the official green light to enter Spain from yesterday – Monday 24th May - by the country's government

after it decided to lift restrictions. It means that holidaymakers from the UK will be allowed without any kind of covid-related restrictions.

However, at the moment, Spain is still included in the UK's Government's Amber category in the traffic light system. Therefore, anyone returning to the UK from Spain must self-isolate on return and take a number of coronavirus tests. Boris Johnson has also made it clear that Britons should not be travelling to Spain for a holiday. He has reiterated that there are only a few acceptable circumstances under which a trip to Spain is allowable such as a funeral or essential work. Despite the rules, thousands have been travelling abroad, and more are now expected to fly out to Spain this week. Flights are expected to increase by 200 percent in the coming days.

The Spanish Interior Ministry has confirmed that the UK will be placed on Spain’s non-EU exemption list, in spite of initial fears over the spread of the Indian variant. The ministry said: "At present the European Union is debating a modification of the recommendation on a temporary restriction of non-essential journeys from outside the EU. It’s foreseeable that Japan and the UK will be included in the list of country exempted. "Several EU states have already put those two countries in that privileged position. Spain receives each year a number of visitors from the UK which is especially relevant in relative and

TIE appointments in Torrevieja Torrevieja town hall is keen to let British residents know that TIE appointments are available in Torrevieja, at the National Police officers on Calle Arquitecto Larramendi 3. We were invited along on Friday to attend an appointment with Jenny Kearney, who was changing her old green residency certificate for a TIE. Councillor for International Residents, Gitte Lund Thomsen was also in attendance to tell us all about the process. “Until now,” explained Gitte, “We have focused on first-time-applicants but now both Spanish and English administrations are encouraging British with green residency certificates to change to TIE when appointments are available.” Jenny, along with daughter Kate, had all the paperwork ready and had booked an appointment online (link below). When they arrived, they immediately told the officer on the door that Jenny was here for her appointment. He confirmed her appointment time, and she was free to wait outside. Once it was her turn, she was called inside. We weren’t allowed to accompany her but Jenny assured us “It was all very straightforward. I went inside, to one of two desks. They checked my documents, took my fingerprints electronically, I signed a form and they gave me a copy of my application. I will return in about a month’s time with my paperwork and collect my TIE.” Gitte also explained that at your appointment, you will be given a receipt for your application (resguardo de solicitud) and here you can see your batch number (‘lote’). The council for international residents, on its Facebook page, is publishing the batch numbers

Gitte (left) and Jenny wait for the TIE appointment

as they are ready for collection so in about a month’s time, Jenny should keep an eye out on facebook.com/Torrevieja-Pangea, when she sees her batch number, she will know her TIE is ready for collection. Gitte added “It is very important that when you return, you bring your old residencia, your resguardo de solicitud and your passport. Without these three things, you will not be allowed to collect your new TIE.” For collection, you don’t need an appointment. To arrange your TIE appointment, simply make a booking on the link below and pay the €12 tax. Print out proof of the tax, and when it is time for your appointment, bring that paper, along with: a photo (size 32mm high x 26mm wide), a recent Padrón (only required IF the address on your residencia is different to your current address), and your passport. You also need to bring an application form EX-23 filled in. It is available on the website where you book appointment.

Contrary to rumours online, there is no rush for Britons already registered as resident to swap their residencia for a TIE. Gitte said, “Those rumours are not accurate, there is no panic, but we would encourage British citizens to avail of these appointments and get the TIE. All administrative processes in the future will be made easier with the TIE. For example, while the old residencia document is still valid, the ‘numero de soporte’ code at the top is not. If you use a Cl@ve PIN for online processes, this code is necessary to use the app, but for Britons with the old certificate, is no longer valid so a TIE will become essential.” The Pangea office is available to help and advise people who are unsure of what to do. Gitte and Jean Paul can be contacted by email at pangea@torrevieja.eu The link for TIE appointments is as follows: https://sede.administracionespublicas.g ob.es/icpco/index

complete free movement, among them the United States, will be able to enter Spain provided they count on a certificate showing they have received their full [Covid-19] vaccinations.”

Local businesses are delighted at the thought of more visitors and the increased spending. However, there is also a certain amount of annoyance and surprise from residents that PCR tests or vaccination proof is not required. People are concerned that whilst the Brits will get a few weeks in the sun, locals may well pay the price with strict measures come autumn.

The Prime Minister also conveyed these messages in English, so that, in his own words, they reached the international press. “I am pleased to inform you that the ministerial order will be officially published today exempting citizens from the UK and other countries such as New Zealand, South Korea or China from temporary restrictions for non-essential trips to Spain,” he said. “I can therefore announce that from Monday, 24th May, Spain will be delighted to receive British tourists again into our country.”

Speaking on Friday at the Fitur tourism fair in Madrid, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez confirmed that from Monday, travellers from the UK and Japan and the other countries already on the list “will be able to enter in the country without health controls on arrival.” He added that, from 7th June, “tourists from other countries with which there is not

However, a tweet later released by the Spanish Embassy in the United Kingdom did clarify that travellers will still have to complete a so-called “health form” before they travel.

Migrants leave Spain and San Fulgencio hosts head back to Morocco Brexit conference for Hundreds of youngsters who arrived in the Spanish North African city of Ceuta this week have returned home. Many of the migrants left Morocco with a little more than their mobile phone and a few dirhams in their pocket. Some swam to the exclave city while others crossed the jetties separating Ceuta from Morocco on foot. Once in Spanish territory, they spent hours wandering the streets. Now, after sleeping outside for one or two nights – some without eating – hundreds of the youngsters have made their way to the border at Tarajal to return home. In the line to leave, organised by the military to ensure an orderly departure, the same phrases are heard: “There is nothing in Morocco,” “I came here to make a living, but there’s nothing here either,” “I tried to reach the mainland, but I didn’t make it.” Ceuta is now seeing the reverse of what happened when between 8,000 and 9,000 migrants crossed into the city, according to estimates from security forces. According to the Spanish government, 5,600 people have since been sent back to Morocco. Spain’s Interior Ministry said thousands of these expulsions were “refusals at the border,” a euphemism for irregular

expulsions or express deportations. But since then hundreds have decided to return home voluntarily. “There is no greater discussion for those who still want to enter [Ceuta] than to see so many people returning,” said a source from Spain’s security forces. The soldiers at the border have been organising the departures practically nonstop. Those wishing to leave are placed in a group of 20 and each group is let out one at a time. At least 60 people, mostly youngsters, but also entire families, left just between 9.30am and 10am last Wednesday. The soldiers are from Ceuta and speak Darija, a vernacular form of Arabic spoken in Morocco, with the youngsters who calmly approach the border with their bags of clothes and food. Waiting in line to leave Ceuta are also women with suitcases who were trapped in the city when Morocco decided to close its border in March 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. This decision cut off the thousands of cross-border workers, many of them porter women, who used to

British community enter the city every day. Now that the border is temporarily being opened to allow the new arrivals to leave, women who were caught in Ceuta are using this as an opportunity to return home. But while hundreds of people have returned to Morocco, the situation in Ceuta has not returned to normal. There are still thousands of migrants in the city. Some are staying in homes, others in warehouses that have been fitted out with beds to deal with the emergency. But many more have nowhere to go. Dozens of migrants have been sleeping outdoors in parks and showering in the fountains. But despite the alarm and concern among Ceuta residents over the breach of Spanish territory, there have been no serious security problems or altercations, according to government sources.

The regional secretary for the European Union and External Relations, Joan Calabuig, met with the British community in San Fulgencio about the possible consequences of strict conditions of residence. The Mayor of San Fulgencio, José Sampere, alongside the Councilor for International Relations, Darren Parmenter, Regional Secretary for the European Union and External Relations, Joan Calabuig, and the Territorial Director Antonia Moreno, met with local British citizens and groups. The objective of the meeting was to discuss potential negative consequences of the difficulty of current requirements on Britons seeking residencia in Spain and that how the situation could negatively affect towns like San Fulgencio. The mayor said “we are a municipality open to residents of other countries of the European Union, chosen by a large majority of citizens of the United Kingdom to live, and that is why we want to

facilitate as much as possible any procedure they have to carry out to come to as a result of leaving their country of origin from the EU”. The Councilor for International Relations, Darren Parmenter, indicated that the main problem for the British who apply for residence after Brexit and who are not included in the scope of the

Withdrawal Agreement “are the financial requirements to be eligible”. Under these conditions, “a very high minimum income is required”. To be able to apply successfully, a couple should have an income of more than €2,800 per month, or have an equivalent amount for one year in the bank, a balance of more than €33,800.

The economic conditions will be even tougher when the first visa has to be renewed after one year with the requirement that "the applicant must have double the original amount that he had in the bank at the time of the first visa application or continue receiving the minimum monthly income required,” reported Mr Parmenter. Both the Councillor for International Residents and the Mayor pointed out the potential negative consequences that these demands could have for San Fulgencio, causing British citizens to decide to retire to other EU countries with more flexible requirements to settle, such as France or Portugal. In the long term, Mr Parmenter estimates that this situation would would significantly reduce the number of inhabitants” in addition to also affecting the economy of the municipality, and having a negative impact on real estate sales and on local businesses owned or used by international residents.

New plea for murder suspect believed have fled to Spain Police have released a new picture of a fugitive wanted in connection with the murder of a man 15 years ago today as the victim’s twin sister issued a heartfelt plea for information. The renewed appeal comes as Crimestoppers mark the anniversary with a £5,000 reward for anyone who comes forward to them with information which helps lead to the arrest of Allan Foster. Popular dad David ‘Noddy’ Rice, 42, was shot multiple times at close range on May 24, 2006, as he sat in his vehicle in a car park. Police launched a manhunt to trace the killer and soon Allan Foster, a friend of David’s also from South Shields, was identified as the prime suspect. It was believed Foster fled to Spain in the days which followed the fatal shooting and has remained one of the UK’s most wanted fugitives ever since. One man, Steven Bevens, was jailed for life in 2007 for his role in the murder, and driver Derek Blackburn, was sentenced to two-and-a-half years for assisting an

offender. Detective Chief Inspector Graeme Dodds of Northumbria Police’s Homicide and Major Investigation Team (HMET) is now heading the investigation and continues to work with the National Crime Agency’s International Department, the International Crime Coordination Centre, Crimestoppers at home and abroad as well as the British Embassy in Spain. Earlier this week (Monday, May 24) on the 15th anniversary of the fatal shooting, David’s sister Shirley Rice has also opened up about the impact his death has had on her family as she asks those harbouring information to come forward. She said: “It’s been 15 years since I last saw or spoke to my brother and not a day goes by where I don’t think about him or

wish I could speak to him. “It’s awful to think there are people out there who are deliberately keeping information to themselves which could ultimately give me and my family closure. “If you know something please come forward. Think of where your loyalties lie, no allegiance should be that strong that it covers up for someone capable of causing so much devastation.” Det Chief Insp Dodds added: “We know the passage of time can change a lot of things – friendships, allegiances, even family ties. We believe there will be people out there who hold the key to our investigation and have information which can greatly assist us. “So my message today is simple – if you know Allan Foster or have information which will help us locate him, please come forward. “If you don’t want to talk to my

Cash boost for local food bank

As always, the local community rallied round to support a worthy cause on Thursday as the Stray Sod hosted a charity day in aid of the Blue Lagoon Food bank – and raised more than 3,500€. The event saw Stevie Spit and Nikki G entertain the crowds from 12noon and there were also market stalls to browse and a

BBQ menu. The majority of the money was raised through a grand prize raffle and charity auction which saw a wide range of excellent prizes up for grabs including a TV, mini golf break, autographed Madonna photo and a week-long holiday villa rental. The Blue Lagoon Food Bank is

the sister branch of La Florida Friends Food Bank and help people of all nationalities who are struggling in the current economic climate. The charity provides food stuffs, toiletries and general goods to anyone in need. For further information check out either group on Facebook.

WhatsApp scam Valencia region warning pushes for UK Unscrupulous crooks have developed a scam which sees victims unwittingly pass on a six-digit code - which could give them access to your cloud messages and lock you out of your account. A worrying WhatsApp scam has been reported by frustrated users - with people locked out of their accounts after being taken in by the trick. People say they have received messages claiming to be after a six-digit code - with those who do get it urged to delete it. Victims receive a message seemingly from a friend which states: "Hello, sorry, I sent you a 6digit code by mistake, can you pass it to me please? It's urgent?" In reality, the code which is sent alongside the message, gives criminals access to your account. Whenever anyone upgrades their handset, WhatsApp generates a six digit code so you can get hold of messages archived in your chat. This is sent in a text message. If you hand this over, it means someone else can access your messages leaving you locked out of WhatsApp, victims say. One WhatsApp user posted on Twitter: "Three members of my family have lost access to their

green list WhatsApp this morning. Hackers send a text message from WA with a verification code, then a WhatsApp text from someone you know saying they desperately need the code. Do not send the code or click the link." People who have been taken in by the scam include Radio 2 presenter Jeremy Vine, who said criminals had been able to use his contact list to target more people. A Digital Privacy Expert said: "WhatsApp users need to be on the lookout for a worrying new scam that is allowing cybercriminals to hack into people’s WhatsApp accounts. "Anybody who receives a message out of the blue with a one-time PIN code should be extremely wary because this is

how the attack starts. "Following the receipt of the unexpected OTP code, the hacker will send the victim a direct message claiming to be their friend or contact. They will then ask to be forwarded the code by claiming to have mistakenly sent it to them. "That code is actually the twofactor authentication code for accessing the victim's WhatsApp account, and once the victim forwards it to the hacker they will use it to hack into their account. "Always be on the lookout for any text messages that contain an OTP code and never, ever forward or screenshot or otherwise pass those codes on to anybody, no matter how genuine they sound."

The president of the Valencia region is to meet Britain’s ambassador to Spain this week to press for the region to be added to the UK’s green list of acceptable travel destinations. Valencia, which includes the resorts of Benidorm and Alicante on the Costa Blanca, claims to be the safest place in Europe, with a Covid infection rate of 29 cases per 100,000 inhabitants compared with Spain’s overall rate of 140 per 100,000. On Friday the Spanish government added the UK and Japan to the list of countries whose residents can enter without presenting a negative PCR test for coronavirus, but Spain remains on the UK’s amber list meaning only essential travel there is advised and all arrivals from Spain face restrictions. The regional government says Ximo Puig, the Valencian president, will meet Hugh Elliott to argue for an agreement so that British visitors can travel to

the region without having to quarantine on their return to the UK. “The generalitat wants the UK to treat us as a region, rather than treat Spain as a single territory which has a Covid average that is much higher than in Valencia,” a spokesperson said. For several weeks the Valencian hotel and tourism organisation Hosbec has been pressing the regional government to take the initiative, especially since Portugal was granted the green status that Spain has been denied. “Portugal is part of the Iberian peninsula and the Valencian community can offer an identical option because it’s a controlled area that can function like an island so that tourists don’t go to other parts of the country,” said Toni Mayor, the Hosbec president. Puig has announced that the region will issue its own vaccination passports to

residents. Tourism is vital to the Valencian economy and in 2019 Britons accounted for 29.7 percent of the region’s 9.5 million visitors, rising to 40 percent in Benidorm and the Costa Blanca. The Valencia hotel sector says it has racked up losses of €1bn during the pandemic and only 16 percent of its workforce is actively employed. The absence of tourists is estimated to have cost the region a total of €11bn in lost income in 2020. As well as being a popular tourist destination, Valencia has Spain’s second highest British resident population after Andalucía. According to Spain’s national statistics office there about 78,000 British residents in Valencia, of whom 69,000 live in Alicante province. The British Business Association in Benidorm said this month that more than 100 mostly British residents were dependent on its food banks.

Calls for smoking ban on all beaches Tens of thousands of people are calling on Spain’s Environment Minister to support a blanket ban on smoking on Spanish beaches. A petition has been signed by almost 300,000 people, and has been submitted to Minister Teresa Ribera, calling on her department to introduce national legislation to ban smoking on all beaches. The association behind the petition, No Fumadores, has been campaigning for years to bring about the ban on all beaches. Raquel Fernández Megina of No Fumadores said in a statement published on Friday that the hundreds of thousands of signatures already gathered “send the message that we can’t wait any longer”. A blanket ban would protect beachgoers from the effects of second hand smoke while also ridding unsightly and polluting cigarette butts that are discarded on many of the country’s beaches, said Fernández Megina. No Fumadores claims that already, 475 beaches in Spain have been declared smoke free. An 2018 analysis undertaken by the European Environment Agency suggested cigarette butts and filters were among the most commonly found items on Europe’s beaches. Their harms have been widely documented by scientists; prompting warnings that nicotine, heavy metals and benzene contained in cigarette ends may leach out, contaminating soil and aquatic environments, and that filters represent a serious ingestion and entanglement risk to marine wildlife.

Skeletal donkey rescued by local centre The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre has seen more than is fair share of cases of neglect and abuse over the years, but as new equines come in, it still shocks centre cofounders Sue and Rod Weeding to the core and pulls at their heart strings. Despite being completely strapped for cash with the current climate and their charity shops struggling to bring in money for the rescue centre, the couple simply cannot refuse to help. Such was the case this week when they had yet another call from the police saying they had found an abandoned donkey. The little creature was in a skeletal condition, covered in sores. He was tied up with heavy metal chains by the river in Algorfa. Sue said: “He is just skin and bone. I know times are hard financially, we have 122 animals to care for and feed, but if we had said no this poor little creature would still be down the bank of the river tied to the palm tree with no food or water.” The rescue came just weeks after the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre received a call from Spav La Vila Joiosa, a rescue centre in Villajoyosa about a donkey abandoned in a ruin in a small village. They don't have the facilities to deal with a larger animal and called Easy Horse Care

Villa Joyosa rescue

for help and assistance. Sue said the conditions were once again appalling: “We found the poor little guy in this hell hole, alone in his dirty pen. We were told that he was fed bread by the neighbours after the owner had vanished.” He needed urgent attention from their equine vet Dorothea who was worried about his stomach and he continues to be monitored. The Rescue Centre, based in Rojales, continues to be at the forefront of such rescues and is the first point of contact for the authorities when they are dealing with cases of animal abuse and neglect and yet, despite these close ties with the police and Town

Halls, they still receive no funding or financial support. Everything comes from Rod and Sue's own pockets or through public donations. With two more mouths to feed they need help more than ever. To add to this, their van, which is vital to the charity shops to help collect donations of furniture, is currently in the garage. Repairs are expected to cost around 1,500e and 5,000e is still owed to the Alicante horse hospital for previous treatments. For more information on the work the Rescue Centre does or to make a donation, visit website www.easyhorsecare.net

What does buying within a community actually mean? When purchasing a property with shared communal areas such as a swimming pool, gardens, entrances, garages, etc. there will be annual charges that must be paid. They are for the general maintenance and upkeep. The communal fees are shared between all properties within the community. These charges are generally split into four payments a year (quarterly). They can vary depending on the amount of properties that belong to the community. The communal charges also depend on the size of the land the property sits on. Homes that are on corner plots usually incur higher fees. Each community has different rules that must be abided by. For example, you can’t change the colour of the exterior paintwork without prior consent. Or use the swimming pool out of the stated hours of use. Want to remove a tree or add on an extension? If the community rules say no, it’s a no!

A community is run by a President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary and a company of Administrators. These positions are elected by a voting system between all homeowners within the community. A meeting (AGM) is usually held once a year. This is a particularly good way of meeting your neighbours as many hold barbecues or drinks after! In general the benefits of being on a community makes sure all shared amenities run smoothly and look their best! Purchasing a property within a community is a good option if you’re wanting to have the use of certain types of amenities such as a swimming pool, but without the maintenance of looking after it yourself! Still Holding UK ISAs? Many expats living here in Spain retain their UK ISAs as they understand how they work and although the returns are low, the interest is tax free. Unfortunately, for Spanish tax residents, there is no such thing as tax free interest. ISAs are designed specifically for UK tax payers and were set up to encourage people to save in a safe and easy way through their bank or building society. As soon as you are no longer a UK tax resident there are no benefits to holding ISAs.

office. Although ISAs are not illegal here in Spain, you must declare any interest gained on your annual tax return and this could be taxed up to 23%. As interest rates are at an all-time low, this requirement renders them unsuitable and unprofitable for expats. This is the exact same scenario for Premium Bonds.

At Seagate we have a range of tax efficient products designed for Spanish residents, from household names such as the Prudential International. Not only do these products offer significant tax benefits over non-compliant UK products, but they also take away complex In fact, just the opposite is true, as they could reporting requirements and calculations that land you in hot water with the Spanish tax are required when manually declaring such

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP A good week for sterling started off with the pound pushing higher against the US dollar after better than expected UK job figures. The ONS has announced that 84,000 jobs were created in the three months to March, which is much higher than the expected 50,000 that was predicted. Sterling hit 1.42 in response, a marked difference from the start of May when GBP/USD was hovering around the 1.38 mark. The last time we saw 1.43 that was over three years ago back in April 2018. The continued easing of the UK lockdown and resumption of some international travel has also helped to push the pound higher, while at the same time markets are choppy with the threat of the Indian variant potentially blowing the full unwinding of lockdown off course. However, multiple reassurances throughout the week have helped. In a week by dominated once again by talk of inflation, sterling’s real claim to fame was the readiness and ability of the NHS to ramp up vaccinations in response to an increase in Covidinfections. As for inflation itself, the data were not unduly helpful to the pound. Although consumer prices more than doubled to 1.5% in the year to April it was still not a very high number and investors’ reaction was not appreciative. They found some joy in this Friday’s retail sales figures, with April’s sales increasing by a monthly 9.2%, up by 42.4% from the same (lock-down hit) month last year.Beaten only by the euro and Swedish krona, sterling had a moderately successful week. It strengthened by an average of 0.3%, keeping pace with the Swiss franc

and adding one and a third US cents. EURO Gross domestic product in the Eurozone shrank by a revised 0.6% in the first quarter of the year, in line with forecast. The numbers confirmed a double-dip recession (another two successive quarters of negative GDP) but failed to dismay investors. The estimate now is that Europe “will log a strong second-quarter rebound”. Interestingly, at 1.6% headline Euroland inflation was not materially different from Britain’s. National rates ranged from -1.1% in Greece to 3.3% in Luxembourg. Gross domestic product in the Eurozone shrank by a revised 0.6% in the first quarter of the year, in line with forecast. The European Central Bank was mostly silent, although on the theme of inflation the press reported that former ECB chief economists have warned of a Eurozone debt trap if inflation comes back. Chief Economist Philip Lane echoed the view of the Bank of England and Federal Reserve that inflation is not a threat though. He told the Institute of International and European Affairs to “look at the level” of inflation rather than monthly spikes, and to consider other economic indicators. The Account (the redacted minutes) of the European Central Bank’s April policy meeting was unilluminating. For example; the Governing Council was “ready to adjust all of its instruments, as appropriate, to ensure that inflation moved towards its aim in a sustained manner, in line with its commitment to symmetry”.None of this did the euro any harm: it strengthened by an average of 0.5% to take first place for the week.

Online advisory talks for foreign residents Continuing with its work of advising foreign residents, the Department of International Residents, led by Mariola Rocamora, has organised two on-line seminars – or webinars, as they are known – aimed at expats. The first one, on Wednesday 2nd June, will deal with ‘Post Brexit’ is aimed especially at British residents and it will give useful information about living in Spain after Brexit and will dispel the myths and rumours.

The second, on Thursday 3rd June, will deal with taxes in Spain and will talk about SUMA taxes, tourist apartments, taxes for non-residents and income taxes. The talk will be given in English and Spanish. Both will begin at 11.30am. The Councillor for International Residents, Mariola Rocamora, explained that "the previous talks, which were held the first week of May, have been very well received and we believe that it is necessary to

continue informing and advising our international residents." The talks will be held through the digital platform zoom and to register it will be necessary to send an email to: residents@orihuela.es. These seminars have been presented thanks to the ‘Call for Subsidies’ destined for Town Councils of the Alicante Provincial Council for projects, programs and activities in the field of Foreign Citizens.

We need to talk about your financial adviser… By Sam Kelly DipPFS, EFA, BA (Hons) Managing Partner Chorus Financial commission could be squeezed out of the client, whether through the funds themselves, or an investment bond – i.e., a Spanish Compliant Investment Bond, or an International Bond held under a QROPs or SIPP.

Looking back, it’s obvious I was fairly naïve when I first moved to Spain in terms of just how the financial services industry works here. I have been an investor since my teens, more than 20 years now, and have successfully managedinvestment portfolios for many years. When I made the decision to move permanently to Spain, I had no idea the journey it would take me on… beyond the 40 hour drive itself! I arrived here following a job offer from a large global financial advisory firm, well-known here in Spain, with what I perceived to be a pretty good reputation. The truth is, within my first week I was both dumbstruck and horrified by the practises I saw. The entire advice model wasn’t built around client needs and outcomes, transparency and expertise, it was built around how much undisclosed

I immediately realised I could not remain at this company, so quickly began speaking with the other major firms here in Spain. To my amazement I found that every firm I spoke with had exactly the same approach. However they dressed it up, and however well they presented their recommendations, these plans were basically all the same. A bond with a tie-in and a limited fund choice, both of which paid enormous commissions to the adviser whilst the client ultimately saw sub-optimal returns. This wasn’t the type of career I wanted. The reality is, I was already very comfortable in terms of my personal finances, and I hadn’t moved to Spain for some ‘get-richquick’ scheme. I was here because my family have always had a close connection with Spain, my mother has lived here for decades, and every time I got off the plane, when that

warm air hit me, it made me feel like I was already home. I was here to build a life and build a client base who would want to remain with me for many years, not discover a few years down the line that I had ripped them off! Sadly though, that is the case for so many of you living here, and you probably don’t even realise it yet. Spain has had no law requiring fee and commission disclosure like we had in the UK, and many firms deliberately targeted our communities for this very reason. It would not be uncommon to see a client who had been tied in for 5, 8 or 10 years to a Spanish investment bond, QROPs, even an International SIPP, who had signed paperwork that generated as much as 13% commission for their adviser on the very first day – a combination of bond and fund commissions. With no other company out there that I wanted to join, Chorus Financial was founded. Chorus was built off a vision of ethical, high quality, transparent advice. We have worked tirelessly for many years now to educate our communities here in

Spain, and on two occasions we have won major European awards for those efforts. Sitting here today writing this article, itfills me with so much prideto knowthat Chorus has flourished to become one of the most trusted and successful financial advice companies in Europe, from our offices here on the Costa Blanca. Our vision and promise continues to be that we will advise you to the best of our abilities, always promising to put you first, with full fee transparency, value and the best investment portfolios available to you. Whether you’re looking for a new pension or investment recommendation, or have an existing plan, perhaps a QROPs, SIPP or Spanish Investment Bond from companies like SEB, Quilter (formally OMI), Lombard International or others, Chorus can help you. To discover how Chorus can transform your financial future, email me on s.kelly@chorusfinancial.es, call +34 664 398 702, or visit www.chorusfinancial.es for more information.

Investment contracts are intended as medium to long term investments, and all investments have some level of risk. Figures in our articles are examples of what can be achieved and cannot be guaranteed; the value of your investments can go down as well as up. Fees and charges can vary and will be fully explained to you before any advice can take place. This article should not be considered as investment advice or a recommendation of any particular product.

The AfterBrexit Retrospective Licence Manifesto: a must read if you have carried out unlicenced building work. 1. What are the consequences of having building work (extensions or pools) carried out without a proper licence? What is the cost of fines? As from May 2021, building work done without a proper licence will be subject to a fine and demolition order if detected by the Spanish authorities. The cost of the fines will vary between different town halls, size of the extension, kind of plot, etc., but they can easily be over 300€ per square metre.(EG a fine for a 10 square metre shed, can easily reach 3,000€.) The building work can also develop into a court case. For the above reason and if not detected by the authorities, it will devalue the price of the property if it is being marketed. Property owners feel anxious or stressed for having done unlicensed building work and fear, not only receiving a heavy fine, but also that it could be problem at the sale or inheritance process. 2. When Is It Obligatory to have a Building licence? In Spain it is currently compulsory to have a licence for any kind of building work, including minor work such as rendering, installing new windows, retiling etc. Retrospective Licences are only valid for major building work such as house extensions, garages, carports, glazed areas, underbuilds, pools, workshops, storage areas etc. If the property has been extended with building work, or a pool constructed without a proper licence, owners can

still obtain Retrospective Licences after Brexit if the building work meets the necessary conditions. 3. What are the Conditions to Obtain a Retrospective Licence for an Extension Built Without A Proper Building Licence? • In Murcia, to obtain a Retrospective Licence it is essential that the building work already done is at least 4 years old. • In Almeria, the building work needs to be over 6 years old. • In Alicante, the building work needs to have been completed before August 2010 (over 11 years approximately). No Retrospective Licences can be issued for extensions that have already received a fine. 4. Are Retrospective Licences for Building Work done without a building Licence after Brexit still possible to obtain? Can law changes affect Retrospective Licences? Yes, law changes can affect the conditions to be able to obtain a Retrospective Licence and in fact the conditions have changed over the years. At the moment Retrospective Licences are still possible to obtain after Brexit. If and when there is a law change that makes these licences unavailable Martinez de la Casa Architects will inform the general public. Once the Retrospective Licence is issued, the unlicensed extension/pool

cannot be objected to by any authority, regardless of any future law changes. So, if you feel anxious, stressed or concerned for having done building work without a proper licenceit is just the perfect time to fix the matter, (only in case the building work meet the conditions mentioned in point 2) the process is 100% trouble free and straight forward. 5. In case a Retrospective Licence is possible, what is its cost and procedure? Currently the process for obtaining a Retrospective Licence is straightforward and only Spanish architects are able to issue them. Once confirmed, Martinez de la Casa Architects will arrange an appointment to survey the pool/extension requiring only your NIE and current Title Deeds. Back in our office we check the age of the pool using satellite images (pictured is an example used in the process for Retrospective Licence Certification) along with the measurements and documentation we take during our on-site visit. The Retrospective Licence/Certificate of Antiquityis stamped by the Official College of Architects or Notarised and delivered within 10 working days (guaranteed). The price of a Pool Retrospective

Licence (Certificate of Antiquity) is 190€+IVA (229€ IVA incl) and for Extensions 270€+IVA (326€ IVA incl. All extensions in the property included). Martinez de la Casa Architects is the Number One company for Architectural Certification in Southern Spain, including Energy Performance Certificates (121€ inc IVA) and

Habitation/Occupation Licences (prices depending on each Town Hall) and Retrospective Licences. For all enquiries or to arrange an appointment, please call 665 810 411 (English) or visit www.martinezdelacasa.com to see an impressive list of over 300 testimonials by different clients.

Orihuela promotes tourism at FITUR 2021 The International Tourism Fair FITUR 2021- has opened its doors with an air of hope and optimism, among the attendees. All are looking to recover a sector extremely damaged by the pandemic over the coming months. The municipality of Orihuela is attending under the umbrella of the Alicante Provincial Council and the Costa Blanca Provincial Tourism Board, with a strategy outlined and strategically defined by the Department of Tourism. The councillor for Tourism, Mariola Rocamora, is committed to rejuvenating the municipality, which has everything from sun and beach, through to mountains, sport, culture and heritage. This year also includes one more incentive to the tourist offer - the AVE high-speed train link between Madrid and Orihuela - which opens up a whole new range of possibilities. The first day at FITUR 2021 was attended by the Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, who was in charge, together with the Councillor for the Environment, Dámaso Aparicio, of presenting the new image of the city’s Palmeral (B.I.C.) "The City Council, with the help of European Funds, has made a large investment during the last year to make the Palmeral one more addition to the tourist offer

Local tourism push

of our city," said Councillor Aparicio in his speech. In Orihuela we have the second largest palm grove in Europe “traditionally it has brought Orihuela a lot of wealth and now we have a magnificent setting, with a recently opened interpretation centre that invites you to visit. After the recovery work in the Environment area, we now know that it is Mariola Rocamora's turn and that she will know how to promote it adequately, ” added the Mayor. The Costa Blanca, as a whole, is represented with a 205 square meter stand within the Valencian Community space. The security measures and anti-Covid protocols, established by IFEMA, have been extreme, with severe capacity control

measures at the stands, and so many of the presentations will be carried out digitally. The Provincial Board will have a QR download area with all the promotional material of the 141 municipalities in the province. In this "Zero Waste" brochure download area, in line with the sustainable development objectives, you will find various municipal tourism publications. Orihuela, big in Japan Orihuela has also showcased at the International Flower Fair of Shanghai, a dedicated commitment of the Oriolano City Council and especially of the Tourism and Agriculture councils, where the municipality represents Spain at this important world event.

Millions of syringes donated to regional vaccine roll out Three million syringes with hypodermic needles have been donated to public vaccine centres for Covid immunisation in the Comunidad Valenciana by the wife of the Mercadona national supermarket chain. Hortensia Herrero, a successful businesswoman in her own right, who runs a charitable foundation bearing her name – and who is married to Mercadona chairman Juan Roig - supplied the equipment to help maximise the vaccine roll-out in the region, in a bid to get life back to normal as quickly as possible. The disposable 1ml syringes with safety needles are fully compliant with the medical requisites for the inoculation programme, and will cut the cost to the public coffers involved in administering shots to, potentially, every single resident. Vaccines nationwide are being given at central points where those whose turn it is are all called in en masse – albeit given different dates and times to avoid crowding – rather than through booking appointments at GP surgeries. Immunisation 'centres' are set up in different towns or health service catchment areas in, usually, publicly-owned buildings, such as theatres, school classrooms and community halls.

The syringes provided by Mercadona's 'First Lady' will be distributed in all three provinces in the region for use in four different 'vaccine centres'. These are the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia, the Ciudad de la Luz ('City of Light') film studios in Alicante, the IFA major trade fair centre near the Costa Blanca's main airport, in Elche (Alicante province), and the Congress centre in Castellón. This is not the only mass donation the Hortensia Herrero Foundation has made since the start of the pandemic – in April last year, through her charity, Sra Herrero distributed a million masks to five hospitals in the Comunidad Valenciana, at a time when these were difficult to come

by even for medical staff. “I'm proud to be able to cooperate and do my bit in this fight against Covid-19,” she said. “Last year, I was able to help by donating masks, and at the moment, when it seems that we're finally seeing some light at the end of the tunnel, I'm also proud to be able to deliver syringes and hypodermic needles to contribute towards the vaccine roll-out moving at a suitable pace.” Already, in January, regional government health authorities had placed an order for four million syringes, meaning Hortensia Herrero's three million will be a huge help and make considerable savings for the Comunidad Valenciana's public medical care system.

You deserve Spain A three-month Europe-wide campaign has been launched by Spain's tourist board urging foreign travellers to return, backed by an €8 million investment and social media advertising. “You deserve Spain,” reads the slogan across different photographs, the most frequently-seen being one of a family, from the back, standing on a beach looking out over the sea. Instead of the usual bright sunshine, the people in the image are watching a sunrise over the sea. Director of Turespaña, Miguel Sanz, says the advert has been pinned everywhere from Piccadilly Circus to German buses, and will stay there for the next 10 weeks. The campaign is mainly targeting its top four European holidaymaker output countries – France, Germany, Italy and the UK – and to a lesser, but still significant, extent, the four main emerging Spanish tourism

markets on the continent, Belgium, The Netherlands, Poland and Sweden. Adverts are tailored specifically towards the four main 'niches' of visitors to the country – young adults, families, adults without children, and the retired population. Videos and billboards feature people at home 'pretending' to be out for a country hike, whilst actually on a treadmill; attempting to cook but without much success, and simulating surfing on a board lying on the floor indoors. The picture then changes to these people actually hiking and surfing and, instead of cooking, enjoying local cuisine in restaurants in Spain. These activities replace the usual scenes of lounging on a beach or by a pool, in a bid to show off a side of Spain that goes beyond mere sun-seeking trips and to appeal to those who choose their holidays based upon

the culture, countryside or cityscape of their eventual destination. The slogan 'You deserve Spain' means, on a subconscious level, the viewer associates travelling to the country as a 'reward', and creates the idea in his or her mind that they need to practice a little self-care after the challenges of the long pandemic year. It talks to the viewer personally, like a concerned friend telling him or her to look after themselves and treat themselves, because they have either 'suffered enough' or 'worked hard for it'. Tourism and industry minister Reyes Maroto says the slogan also generates a sense of 'trustworthiness, quality and safety', in an attempt to 'get holidaymakers to overcome their reticence of travelling or going abroad'. “Spain is ready now to open itself up to the world,” assures Sra Maroto.

Seann Walsh Angelina Jolie's Brian Conley eyes spot on Britain's Got says Strictly kiss new thriller flops Talent judging panel ‘destroyed’ career Brian Conley would love to land a spot on the 'Britain's Got Talent' judging panel. The 'EastEnders' newcomer - who made his debut as Sonia Fowler's (Natalie Cassidy) estranged father Terry Cant on the BBC One soap recently - has revealed another dream job he is eyeing up. After co-hosting daytime variety show 'Let Me Entertain You' with Christine Bleakley on BBC Two between 2006 and 2007, the entertainer has set his sights on a job on the ITV talent contest. He said: "Is it true I would love to be a judge on 'Britain’s Got Talent'. I think I could contribute to that just because of all the things I have done in the business. I also did a show on BBC Two years ago called 'Let Me Entertain You' and that was way before 'Britain’s Got Talent'. I love nurturing talent." The current panel for 'BGT', which won't be on screens until 2022, features head honcho Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon and David Walliams. Meanwhile, Brian recently confessed he got lost in Albert Square after filming his first scene. The comedian recalled going into the Queen Vic to pick up his things after shooting a scene in the Square, but he went back outside and was stunned to see everyone had left.

He said: "My first scene is with my daughter Natalie Cassidy, Sonia, and we had to do this scene outside just right in the Square and it’s very dark and we had this dramatic scene and everyone goes, 'Alright that’s it, thanks.' "I went back into The Vic and I put my coat back on, found my script, got my coffee and when I came back out everyone had gone and I didn’t know how to get back." At one point, the 59-year-old star thought it might have been a prank and the cast and crew were going to "jump out" and surprise him. He added: "Then I was thinking, 'Oh maybe this is a joke and they’re all going to jump out.' "I was just wandering around the square all on my own, it was very weird."

Seann Walsh has revealed the extent to which the Strictly Come Dancing kissing scandal has affected his life. The comedian appeared on the BBC show in October 2018, and was embroiled in controversy after he was caught kissing his professional dance partner Katya Jones on a night out in London, despite the pair both being in relationships. At the time, both Walsh and Jones issued an apology, and maintained that it was a “drunken” mistake. Now, speaking on podcast Take Flight, Walsh, 35, said that from the moment the kiss became public knowledge, his life “changed forever” and that it left him having panic attacks. He said he had one as recent as “last week”, and was forced to “lie down in the street” until it passed. Walsh continued: “A kiss and a statement destroyed my dreams and who I was. What I could have been, what

my life could have been – what I could have made myself – was gone.” He said he is on anti-anxiety medication, which helps with the panic attacks, and that exercise is also a big help. Following Walsh’s apology, his girlfriend at the time, actor Rebecca Humphries, announced the end of their five-year relationship and accused him of dismissing her suspicions that something untoward was going on by calling her a “psycho”.

Humphries published an open letter urging women not to stay in controlling relationships. Jones stayed with her then boyfriend Neil Jones, also a Strictly dance professional, until their separation in August 2019.

Marvel's Angelina Jolie's new survival thriller Those Who Wish Me Dead has flopped at the box office. Released in cinemas and on streaming service HBO Max simultaneously, this Taylor Sheridan-directed film features Angelina in the role of veteran fire-fighter Hannah Faber, who protects a teenager with two assassins on his tail. The movie welcomed $7.1 million globally in its opening weekend, while Chris Rock's Spiral: From the Book of Sawtook $12 million. Box Office Pro's chief analyst Shawn Robbins felt that Those Who Wish Me Dead ultimately had a number of factors working against it, as he shared (via Variety): "The film was barely promoted even by pandemic standards and effectively went under the radar as both as a theatrical

and streaming release. "We've seen a number of genre thrillers aimed at audiences of a certain age open during the past year, so there could also be an element of saturation in play." It's not yet clear how the movie has performed on HBO Max, as Warner Bros hasn't made viewing figures available. Meanwhile, first reviews for the film seemed mixed, with critics praising its atmosphere and direction while questioning some "disasterflick cliches". "Those Who Wish Me Dead sees Angelina Jolie return to her action roots in what amounts to an underwritten vehicle. While there's plenty of large entertaining set pieces, Sheridan's intriguing premise withers under its overabundant components," wrote one reviewer.

Spice up your life... Spices are transformative. They are the key to flavourful recipes and are often the differentiating factor that gives a dish a sense of place and origin. The same protein, grain, and vegetable simply prepared with different spices will result in completely different food experiences. In addition to being flavour

bombs, spices have incredible health benefits (related to their bioactive compounds) that have been touted since the time of ancient civilizations. And thanks to modern science, many of these spices now also have the evidence-based research to back this up. Spices deliver the complete package, boosting both flavour and nutrition (without any downside). A well-stocked pantry of spices will be slightly different for everyone depending on personal flavour preferences and cultural backgrounds, but keep these top three spices to keep on hand (along with your other favourites) as they are versatile Continued on page 28

across cuisines and also have the most significant benefits in terms of health.

Cinnamon Cinnamon is one of the most familiar and

commonly utilized spices and can be used in both sweet and savoury cooking. Health Benefits There are numerous studies demonstrating cinnamon’s blood glucose-lowering effects, including this 2020 study that showed just 500 milligrams of cinnamon (about ¼ teaspoon) three times per day can lower fasting and post-meal blood glucose levels in people with prediabetes. Cinnamon’s bioactive compounds collectively have antioxidant, antimicrobial, anticancer, and antifungal

activities. There is even some preliminary evidence that cinnamon may help lower total cholesterol and triglycerides. Culinary Uses In the kitchen, cinnamon can go far beyond its ubiquitous use in oatmeal and sweet desserts. Cinnamon sticks can be used to infuse cinnamon flavour into beverages, such as cinnamon tea or coffee, or added during the cooking process to a braising liquid, stew, or tomato sauce, or even rice. Ground cinnamon can be added to smoothies, yogurt, granola, baked goods, used as part of a spice rub or seasoning for meat and vegetables, or simply sprinkled on top as a finishing garnish.

Turmeric A member of the ginger family, turmeric is an essential ing redient in Indian cuisine, but can be utilised in any home kitchen. Health Benefits Turmeric’s health benefits are numerous and its active compound curcumin is one of the most widely studied phytochemicals due to its powerful anti-inflammatory and

Continued from page 27 anti-cancer benefits. Some studies show curcumin may inhibit the growth of tumor cells as well as reduce inflammatory markers in the body. Turmeric is also being researched for its gut and brain health benefits and may also help lower total cholesterol and triglycerides. Additionally, there is some evidence that curcumin may play a role in managing symptoms of depression as well as be integrated into therapeutic treatments for Alzheimer’s disease. Culinary Uses Turmeric is a root, similar to ginger, that can be consumed freshly grated or dried. Dried ground turmeric is what you will find in the spice aisle. Turmeric can be added to a variety of foods from vegetables and grains to soups and stews to curries, as well as smoothies and snacks, such as turmeric-spiced nuts and popcorn. It is a key ingredient in "golden milk," due to its signature golden hue. To optimise absorption, it is best to consume turmeric after it has been heated in some kind of fat (oil or butter) and also

paired with piperine, the active ingredient in black and white pepper.

Ginger Ginger can be consumed as a fresh root or dried and ground, used as a spice. Health Benefits Ginger contains an active compound called gingerol, which contains phytonutrients that acts as an antioxidant along with antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial, antiinflammatory, and analgesic properties. Both scientific and anecdotal evidence shows that ginger can help alleviate nausea and vomiting, specifically related to those symptoms during pregnancy and chemotherapy. Ginger consumption may also help

alleviate pain associated with rheumatism. Specific amounts in studies vary, but conclude that generally less than 1 teaspoon of ground ginger per day will provide effective relief. Culinary Uses Dried ginger has a strong concentrated flavour, especially if recently opened. Ground ginger is used commonly in baked goods paired with falls spices, such as cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg, but is also a great spice to use in savoury dishes. It works well in spice rubs for meat and poultry, as well as marinades for vegetables and tofu. Ground ginger is also commonly found in North African spice blends, such as ras el hanout.

No ‘safe’ amount of alcohol for brain health, study finds I have enjoyed a carefree lifestyle; I've never been married or had children. I love nature and feel strongly about saving the planet etc. I am vegan and this can result in rolling of eyes and tut tuts from some of my friends when it comes to choosing places to eat. One complained that we always have to go to a veggie restaurant when I am with them. A couple of weeks ago I found out by accident that three of them had gone out without me. When I confronted them, they said they were sorry I wasn't included, but they'd gone for a steak and beer, and knew I wouldn't have wanted to do that. I admit I have vetoed restaurants because I simply cannot sit amongst people who are eating meat. When I think about it, I don't have a lot in common with these ladies, but it was nice to be included by one of the girls, who knew I was on my own. There's nothing wrong with being vegan of course, but some people might get a bit fed up if others' choices seem always to be put ahead of everyone elses. If you mind eating amongst meat eaters, and have said so, I can see how this situation has come about. The fact that three of these ladies went off and had a secret meal by themselves suggests that they were getting a bit fed up, and perhaps you could see their point of view? The upshot is that if you refuse to be in their company when they are eating meat, then you run the risk of being excluded some more. Try and find a compromise and think about joining them in a restaurant that caters for both meat eaters and vegetarians. Tolerance on both sides would be good here.

Any amount of alcohol consumption is harmful to the brain, a new study has found. The study, which looked at 25,000 people, found that even moderate drinking is linked to lower grey matter density. The study, suggests that the more alcohol consumed, the lower the brain volume. In short, the more you drink, the more harm you are doing to your brain. “There’s no threshold drinking for harm – any alcohol is worse. Pretty much the whole brain seems to be affected – not just specific areas, as previously thought,” said the lead author, Anya Topiwala, a senior clinical lecturer at the University of Oxford. Researchers on Topiwala’s team used the UK Biobank, a massive database designed to help researchers look at genetic and environmental factors that lead some people to develop

diseases while others don’t. Researchers for the alcohol brain impact study analysed data from 25,378 participants such as age, sex, education, self-reported alcohol consumption, brain size and health from MRI scans, information about hospital and outpatient visits, and memory tests. A higher volume of weekly alcohol consumption was linked to lower grey matter density – the researchers found, with alcohol connected to a 0.8% change in grey matter volume, even after accounting for individual biological and behavioural characteristics. 0.8% might appear to be a small change, but it is larger than other risk factors – for example, it is four times the contribution of smoking or BMI. Alcohol consumption also impacted the integrity of the brain’s white matter – the fibres

that ‘scaffold’ billions of neurons making up grey matter. Moreover, researchers found that alcohol made other underlying conditions, such as high blood pressure or high BMI, stronger in terms of negative brain impact. The study contradicts many previous studies that suggest there are benefits to drinking wine when compared with beer or spirits. This study found no evidence to suggest that the type of alcoholic beverage type made any difference in risk to the brain. Perceived benefits of wine drinking might be based in socioeconomic factors, explained Topiwala, saying “If you look at who is moderately drinking, at least in this country, they are better educated, wealthier people that would do much better on a memory test … just because of who they are, than people that are less educated.”

Google announces Zara beauty launch tool to identify skin conditions Google’s latest foray into health care is a web tool that uses artificial intelligence to help people identify skin, hair, or nail conditions. The company previewed the tool at I/O and it says it hopes to launch a pilot later this year. People can use their phone’s camera to take three pictures of the problem area - for example, a rash on their arm. They’ll then answer a series of questions about their skin type and other symptoms. The tool then gives a list of possible conditions from a set of 288 that it’s trained to recognise. It’s not intended to diagnose the problem, the company said in a blog post. Google decided to tackle skin conditions using artificial intelligence because of their prevalence, says Karen DeSalvo, the chief health officer at Google Health. “People are coming to Google to ask questions about skin conditions. We get about 10 billion annual skin condition

queries,” she said in a magazine interview. Of course, experts can help people determine if it’s something simple or indicative of a more serious illness, but there’s a shortage of dermatologists all over the world. DeSalvo hopes this tool can help get people accurate information about potential conditions, quickly, without having to spend hours doing their own online research. The team trained the model on millions of images of skin problems, thousands of images of healthy skin, and 65,000 images from clinical settings. The model takes factors like age, skin type, sex, and race into account when suggesting possible conditions. When it was tested on around 1,000 images of skin problems from a diverse range of patients, Google says it identified the correct condition in the top three suggestions 84 percent of the time. It included the correct condition as one of the possible issues 97 percent of the time.

The new system builds on Google’s past work using artificial intelligence tools to identify skin conditions. The company published the first iteration of its deep learning system in Nature Medicine last spring. That paper showed that the system could identify 26 common skin conditions just as accurately as dermatologists and more accurately than primary care doctors. In April, the company published another study showing that the system could help nondermatologist physicians diagnose skin conditions more accurately. Google is also working with a Stanford University research team to test how well the tool works in a health care setting. The company obtained a Class I medical device mark for the tool in the European Union, designating it as a low-risk medical device. It has not been evaluated by the United States Food and Drug Administration.

Imanyo Golf Society “Charity Queen Vase” at Roda Abbey Anglers On On Tuesday the 19th of April we once again visited the El Bosquet complex at Crevillente. The Weather was set fair and 20 anglers took part fishing pegs A1 to 7 and 26 to 40. Winner on the day and no this is not last weeks report was none other than Neil McBernie. Neil is without doubt the dominant angler on this complex and draw on peg B1 he fished across up in the water on maggot to take 29.86kg of carp. Second and pegged next to him was the one arm wonder himself, Tony McMillan. Tony has been suffering from a snapped shoulder since December and due to complications he has been waiting for an operation to put it right. His shoulder is heavily strap and to watch him fish with virtually one arm is a sight to behold. He took a steady stream of carp and several large barbel all on maggot for 20.50kg. In third place, draw on the other side of the complex on peg 40 was Alan Smith. Alan fished across on pellet or down the side on bread to catch a large number of carp for

20.40kg. The pairs competition was won by Neil and Richard Wood with 38.74kg. Other section winners were Terry Brindley with 12.42kg , Terry Screen 14.26kg, Bill Reade 13.40kg and Richard King with 8.28kg. Rods N Reels The following day due to Covid injection appointments and the threat of some bad weather only 10 hardy souls attended the match. We were rewarded with possibly the best average weights we have ever had at this complex. The weather was fished in decent conditions apart from the last 2 hours were a light drizzle was present. Doing the double was theKing of El Bosquet, Neil McBernie. Drawn on peg 6 he fished maggot up in the water to take a magnificent 43.44kg of mainly carp with the odd barbel and mullet. The only blemish on his recent record was that he broke his very expensive pole with a schoolboy error by picking it up

incorrectly. Second on the day was yours truly Ian Brown. Draw on the same channel on peg B1 I fished maggot all day either up in the water or 4 inches off the bottom to catch quality carp and the odd mullet for 30.86kg. Third was Bill Reade draw on peg 35 with 21.18kg of carp caught on bread or maggot. The pairs competition was won by Neil and Steve Higgins with 63.46kg. The average weight between the ten anglers was 20.60kg so credit should be passed onto the owners for the splendid job that they have done in restocking and maintaining the complex. Next week we will be again fishing the same complex. If anyone is interested in joining any of the above clubs then please visit our website at www.abbeyanglers.es Ian Brown

This is the first time we played for the re-named Charity Queen Vase which used to be the Parkinson’s vase sponsored by Geoff Ham who handed the reins to Dons Ralph to continue to raise money for our charities. This was our first visit to Roda as the border to Murcia only opened up last week. The early day started with the usualfull English breakfast at Imanyo’s. The weather was very sunny and breezy with a nice temperature of 80 degrees. We have to compliment the ground staff at Rodaasthe course was in excellent condition from the tee boxes to the greens. The only thing missing was the Club house which was closed due to refurbishment. The format wassingles full handicap

Elche CF Yes We can and Yes We Did! The final matches of the Spanish La Liga season took place this weekend. Elche CF started the fixture in the relegation zone. Worryingly their survival did not solely depend on their performance, but also on the results of other teams. This made for a tense nail biting season finale. Adding to the drama fans were allowed back into the Martinez Valero, for the first time in 477 days. Both David and myself along with a handful of regular coach goers, were some of the lucky 5,000. The whole process was very well organised, with all supporters adhering to the regulations and a great confidence booster for the return of fans next season. The club anthem was boisterously sung and the Franjiverdes reacted to the encouragement of the crowd. The team played with hunger, speed and discipline, however they lacked the ability to finish off the final moves of many of their set pieces. The Basque visitors had the first chance on 8 minutes, with Vesga rolling it along the grass into the waiting hands of Gazzaniga. Mfulu had the first opportunity for the home side, but he sent it sailing high over the bar. Around the half hour mark the crowd roared as the first goal was scored by Lucas Boye whose foot guided Pere Milla's cross just out of the reach of the keeper to the back of the net. This galvanised Athletic resulting in them

almost equalising when Berenguer's shot forced Gazzaniga to make a remarkable save. The second half was played on two pitches. It was critical to Elche's survival that Valencia continued to draw or win at Huesca. The stats were not looking good for us at the Alcoraz as Huesca were playing out of their skins, fighting for their survival with a final shot tally of 23. Back at the Martinez Valero, Elche scored again with a blast of a shot from Raul Guti. With 6 minutes of extra time, the final whistle went and a hushed silenced descended over the eager crowd. The quiet was broken just 30 seconds later with shouts of joy when the final whistle was also blown at the Alcoraz and the 0-0 scoreline ensured Elche's La Liga survival.

Shouts of 'si se puede' and 'somos somos de primera division' reverberated around the stadium. 'Yes we can' and yes we did, we remain in La Liga. As soon as spectators are allowed back into the stadiums, EuroTourGuide will once again be offering Coach Tours with Match Tickets to support Elche CF. We would like to thank Antonio and staff at Imanyo’s Bar for the great food and great hospitality. TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

You have to applaud Tottenham Hotspur FC, really. They had us going there, I almost thought they were going to pull off one of the most perfect final day results going. To the untrained eye, it looked like Tottenham went to Leicester fully intending to win and secure their place in next season’s new, interesting and some-might-say-prestigious Europa Conference League. But to those of us who like to think we know a thing or two, Tottenham conveniently used the media narrative of being “Spursy” to their advantage giving away two penalties that would raise an eyebrow in the anti-corruption circles of Asian football had the match taken place in Singapore. Those two penalties were tucked away nicely by Jamie Vardy meaning Leicester got their wish of Champions League football and Spurs got theirs not wasting their time kicking a ball around in another meaningless competition on Thursday nights. Better still? The defeat would allow Arsenal, naively winning 2-0 at Brighton, to slip into 7th. Oh, how Ryan Mason and the lads must have been grinning in the second half as the perfect set of events unfolded Harry Kane imagining finally achieving something meaningful in his time with the club. And then Leicester realised they were going to finish in the top four and proceeded to collectively, and I believe this is the technical sporting term, utterly pap themselves. Having been in the top four spots all season until momentarily slipping out during the week having lost to Chelsea, Leicester managed to get back in there with about 20 to go only to utterly self-implode in quite impressive style. I mean, they bottled

it from a great height last season but this was a new level. You have to feel a bit for Kasper Schmeichel - the Wembley hero - punching a corner into his own net and basically finishing the season there and then. Brendan Rodgers needed Chelsea to do them a favour (they need another one next week) and boy, did they. Imagine going to Villa and losing when you only needed a positive result to secure Champions League football next season. Of course, this could be the ultimate double-bluff (or something, I am confusing myself now, let alone you) from Tottenham. Did they suddenly realise that by killing off Leicester’s dreams of the Champions League that Rodgers might suddenly be interested in taking them over next season? If so, I applaud Daniel Levy once again for pure genius. Kane got the Golden Boot, naturally, and Gareth Bale chose his last minutes in a Tottenham shirt to actually look like a Premier League footballer again. Imagine if Florentino Perez watched that and stumbled across a new cunning plan for the summer. Balo has decided, apparently, but is keeping it to himself - not the first time he’s gone all mystic Meg on an on-pitch interview after his last kick of a season. I believe the modern vernacular is “fraud” - and I would not have been surprised to see that word and Thomas Tuchel in the same Tweet had Chelsea managed to finish 5th in the table. 5th, losing the FA Cup Final and probably losing the Champions League to City? I am sure Frank

Lampard could have managed that. OK, that might be pushing it - and it didn’t actually land like that but it was very, very close. Can we all get off the Tommy T bandwagon now? I’m setting myself up for an almighty fall when they topple Pep’s lot next week, but he doesn’t win finals and he got Chelsea to the point where it was 100% in their own hands going into the weekend and lost the match they had to win and needed Spurs, Spurs of all people, to bail them out. Are we sure he’s all that? Credit to Aston Villa, though Bertrand Traore, one of many rejected by Chelsea, proving to be pivotal where many other Chelsea wide men with bigger reputations decided to put in a no-show. All the chaos at the King Power and Villa Park distracted us from a very efficient job by the former Champions at Anfield. Jurgen Klopp’s team revived themselves from the graveyard to finish 3rd. Sadio Mane did enough to mean he probably won’t the forward under threat for his place next season. On any other day, the real story would have been Pep Guardiola sending on Sergio Aguero at the perfect time to wave farewell to Premier League football. City’s record goalscorer was on the pitch a matter of minutes and had scored two of the most classical Aguero goals you could possibly imagine. Thank goodness Everton were the opposition or it probably wouldn’t have happened. Imagine suggesting they might be in a title race earlier in the season. Aguero now has the most Premier League goals for a single club and heads off to repair the self-inflicted damage at Barcelona.

Las Ramblas Golf Society

Whose is this year’s Grand Prix? With the course resembling the Circuit de Catalonia 32 players made it down to trackside on Monday for the start of this year’s Individual Match play Championship. After today’s time checks only 16 would be left on Wednesday’s starting grid. In pole position Lyndsay Forbes was overtaken on the final lap by rookie George Hogg whilst I hit an oil slick and went out to Pat Cassidy 5&3. Mark Western finally saw off Joyce McClusky on their 20th hole. Team Murray (Graham and Petina) both made it through their respective matches and will face each other in the next qualifier. Alas Team Robertson (Ken and Liz) were not the ‘Flying Scots’ on the day and both spun off the course. Yvonne Phipps encountered engine trouble (literally) as she went out to Nigel Price 4&3 whilst Benedicte Kruse was caught in John Shervell’s slip stream and also crashed out 4&3. Paul Brown’shandling of this year’s hot tip Andy Martin on the final

hole brought the crowd to their feet. With the chequered flag getting ever closer John Drakesmith turned on the turbo charger to see off Ron Phipps 6&5 on Wednesday. Not to be out manoeuvred Mike Brentnall also won 6&5, this time over Nigel Price. Mark Western will be hoping to stand on top of the winner’s podium for the second year in a row having beaten George Hogg 4&2. It took Paul Brown 20 laps before saying goodbye to Nora Betts and Graham Murray took the bold (if not unwise) decision to pass wife Petina on the last. Those no longer racing in the Singles played a Stableford and a special mention goes to Andy Martin. Playing off a handicap of 4 he racked up 42 points! (That’s 2 under par, gross). Mark Western had obviously been on the Red Bull on Friday as he kept Graham Murray in the rear view mirror and won

6&5. John Dobson lost to John Drakesmith on the 20th lap whilst Paul Brown continued his winning streak over Team Martin this time beating Andrea 4&3. Mike Brentnall un- expectedly hit the crash barriers after Ellen Drakesmith knocked him out 3&2. Pues hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell

Are Newcastle fans still digging out Steve Bruce? He got you to 12th, folks equalling anything your precious Rafa Benitez managed and achieved it in one of the more challenging seasons that club will ever have. I mean, imagine Liverpool losing two of their best players for prolonged periods and seeing how they get on. West Ham really seem to be all grown up now. There were zero dramas, few heart-stopping moments, none of the “great, we’ve messed it up again” stuff at the Athletics Stadium as the Moysiah led the Hammers into 6th and Europe with a 3-0 win over Southampton. Everyone rightly talks about his repair job on Jesse Lingard, but what about Pablo Fornals, eh? Juan Mata may well have scored his last goal for Manchester United on the day another Academy kid scored his first - United ruined Nuno’s goodbye to Wolves by winning away from home (again) with a dubious penalty (again) and managed to win without going behind - that has to be a good sign ahead of Wednesday’s Europe League Final. Leeds ended their season in style, smashing Big Sam’s WBA 3-1 in what could well be Allardyce’s final ever Premier League match (probably not, on reflection - Watford, December 2021 - you heard it here first). Sheffield United beat Burnley in the match nobody cared about in the slightest - even their fans. Oh, and a note to Tim Sherwood. You can call them “matches” and “clubs” you are not contractually obliged to say “football match” and “football club” every single time. We are watching the football. We understand the context. Thanks. “Tales from the Top Flight: The slightly tongue-in-cheek review of the 2020/21 Premier League season” yearbook will be on sale via Amazon in the not-too-distant future.
