Non residents to be vaccinated Health authorities in the Valencian Community confirmed that they will begin to vaccinate non residents if they can prove a planned stay of more than one month. With an influx of national and international tourists expected this week, health authorities have drawn up instructions to vaccinate all of those people who, although not registered in

the region, are planning to stay The Ministry's instructions indicate that, all of them, "will be vaccinated according to their classification in the population information system (SIP)." The instructions are in accordance with the provisions of the National Vaccination Strategy, that is, "guarantee the vaccination of all people according

to the risk group to which they belong." Therefore, all those not registered as resident but who need to be vaccinated, according to their risk level or age group, should register with the SIP system at their local health centre, and join the waiting list for vaccine appointments. In the event that these people have already had a dose elsewhere and are requesting to complete their immunization here, the protocol establishes that the patient must "prove the date of vaccination, type of vaccine and place where it was received." According to reports, some tourists with second homes have already claimed the second dose of the vaccine in the Valencian community. Coming from Britain and northern Europe, they have arrived at local health centres with their identification document to request either the second dose or in some cases, both doses, depending on their age and the risk situation in which they are classified. A health worker said at the weekend that the language barrier is proving an obstacle. “Many of them don't speak Spanish well. Some come without a translator, a fact that makes it even more difficult to communicate with them,” she explained. One example given was British woman who was administered the AstraZeneca in the UK, but according to her age group, here she would have been given Pfizer. The health worker explained “When she was inputted into the nominal vaccination registry, she did not report that first dose. Soon after, a family member came who, with a little more command of the language, explained that the first dose was with AstraZeneca, like most of the United Kingdom” and so the case was notified to Public Health for follow up

More protests about hospital changeover The organisation ‘Plataforma Ciudadana Sanidad Excelente’ (Citizen Platform for Excellent Health) held another protest at the weekend to highlight its rejection of the reversal of the Torrevieja Hospital into public hands. Politicians from all over the Vega Baja area and residents of Torrevieja and surrounding areas supported the platform in the gathering, which took place on Saturday evening in Torrevieja’s main square. A spokesperson for the Platform read a manifesto arguing its opposition to the hospital becoming publically managed. In October of this year the contract for Ribera Salud to run the hospital ends and the department will be managed by the Ministry of Health. The changeover will impact the 11 municipalities served by the ‘health area’ covered by the hospital. At the protest, loud clapping was heard to mark solidarity and support for the 3000 health workers who, in the middle of the vaccination rollout, were fired by the Generalitat Valenciana by WhatsApp, explained the Platform. Members of the Platform spoke about their fears for what the future holds if and when the hospital reverts to public

hands, citing examples of previous such reversions where waiting lists have soared and talented medical staff have left due to deterioration of conditions. The protest ended with a speech by health worker from the hospital, Juan Antonio Franco, who referenced various specialist programmes that will no longer be part of the hospital, and the loss of health professionals. He also highlighted that platforms like Yo Salud, the online patient interface which allows patients and staff to interact online and manage appointments and results, will no longer work after the changeover. The day was closed with the statement that the current management is in charge of the health centres and the hospital so that the patient is currently receiving a comprehensive treatment, allowing a preventive approach to treatment. “Today”, said the spokesperson, “we have a modern, dynamic management that is viable, not stagnant or burdened by political whims, which is where they want to lead us.” Around Torrevieja in recent days, signs have appeared on bridges and fences reading ‘NO to the hospital changeover’.

‘Votes for life’ for British citizens living in Spain .● British citizens who have The changes, which will form registered for longer, including moved abroad will be given ‘votes for life’ as the UK the scraps Government arbitrary 15-year limit on the voting rights .● New measures announced today will also make it easier for overseas electors to remain registered to vote for longer. .● Together, these changes will empower more British citizens living overseas to participate in the UK’s democracy. New measures announced in the Queen’s Speech will make it easier for British citizens who to abroad moved have participate in British democracy. Decisions made in the UK Parliament on foreign policy, defence, immigration, pensions and trade deals affect British citizens who live overseas. It is therefore right that they have a say in UK Parliamentary General Elections. The Government is setting out further detail on plans to scrap the arbitrary rule that prevents British citizens from voting in General Elections if they have lived abroad for more than 15 years.

part of the Elections Bill, will also include measures to enable overseas electors to stay registered to vote for longer, with an absent voting arrangement in place. HMA Hugh Elliott, said:

“In an increasingly connected world, most British citizens living in Spain retain deep ties to the United Kingdom. Many still have family there, worked there for many years, and some have even fought for our country. “They deserve to have their voices heard in Parliament, no matter where they live, and I am delighted that UK Nationals living in Spain will now be able to participate in our democracy.” The proposals fulfil a manifesto commitment to deliver ‘votes for life’, extending the voting franchise for UK Parliamentary General Elections to all British citizens living overseas who have been previously registered or previously resident in the UK. These changes will come into effect in time for the next scheduled General Election in 2024. In addition, new rules will mean overseas electors can stay

voting absent an with arrangement in place, requiring them to renew their registration details once every three years, rather than annually. Electors will be able to reapply for a postal vote or refresh their proxy vote at the same time as renewing their voter registration, streamlining the process and helping to ensure overseas electors have appropriate voting arrangements in place ahead of an election. wider Government's The Elections Bill will also: improve access to voting for electors with disabilities; prevent foreign interference by hostile actors; tackle electoral fraud by post, proxy, in polling stations or through intimidation and undue increase and influence; transparency and accountability within our elections. Further announcements will be made on its measures ahead of the Bill’s introduction. as the system “does not allow registering a second vaccine different than the first, so it is referred to Public Health to decide individually, which vaccine should be administered.” Another obstacle is the “influx of citizens who arrive without proof of their immunization in their country of origin. Hence the importance of a European and national registry, to avoid this type of situation.”

Juan Francisco Navarro, president of the Valencian Society of Preventive Medicine, said that as this region receives national and international tourists, the summer “should be a bit like the previous one, with a series of measures such as the control of nightlife and ‘botellones’. I believe that we will have to continue to maintain precautions.” Navarro also said that the “orderly arrivals of tourists complying with the controls, especially from countries that have a higher vaccination rate than us, will not hurt us at all and

will reactivate the economy.” President of the Generalitat, Ximo Puig, announced on Sunday that 351,000 vaccines will be administered this week, a record number since the vaccination process began. The head of the Consell insisted that June will be the key month for achieving immunity among the population as soon as possible, which in turn will allow for economic recovery to be addressed safely. Puig appealed to the public not to relax their prudence and compliance

with protection regulations, because "the virus is still there and in recent days we have noticed a slight increase that we have to stop." He stressed that the population must be aware that "we are still in a pandemic and that the latest measures that allow greater mobility can lead to an increase in infections." Thus, "we cannot take steps back because it would be very negative, and if we want to reach the gates of summer with the situation we have, we must continue combining vaccination with prevention," he insisted.

Youngster to compensate policemen after an attack in Guardamar Two Civil Guard officers will be compensated for a minor who attacked them during an arrest in Guardamar del Segura. The incident happened while the youngster was trying to carry out a robbery at an empty property. The events occurred on the afternoon of 5th January when two individuals jumped over the perimeter fence of a house with the clear intention of carrying out a robbery, but luckily the security alarm went off. The would-be thieves then jumped the fences of several adjoining houses to make their escape. The Civil Guard patrol began a chase on foot and was able to capture one of the criminals, while the other individual escaped. The caught man began to push and hit one of the officers, causing both of them to fall to the ground in the struggle. The other officer intervened. As a consequence, one of the Guardia

suffered minor injuries and the other, significant injuries that required medical assistance, as well as medical follow-up and rehabilitation. The injuries prevented him from carrying out his normal functions as a law enforcement officer for several days. One of the officers injured is affiliated with the Unified Association of Civil Guards in Alicante, and requested the legal services of the association. The trial was carried out in the Juvenile Court No. 2 of Alicante, as the detained turned out to be a minor, and he was convicted of a crime of robbery with force and an attack against police officers which resulted in five months at a semi-open detention centre followed by one month of probation. The parents of the minor were ordered to compensate the injured offices with 3,655 euros as civil liability and 160 euros or the other injured officer.

Elche Children’s Home is to benefit from the money raised recently by Gary Minton, who completed a near 7-hour sponsored cycle ride on Friday to raise much-needed funds. Gary, aged 57, was a postman in the UK and began cycling in Spain during the lockdown. Friday’s mission was sponsored by Lovelo cycling Club, Villamartin and Danny’s Bar and Grill in Campoverde. The bar acted as the start and finish line and also hosted a Ladies Day with market stalls, prize raffle and a donation tin. The stalls all contributed to the fund raising by donating part of their profits. Gary was accompanied by fellow cyclists Andy and Chippy for the first 25km, before battling the elements on his own to complete the route. Gary said: “It was tough going against the wind and rain at the start of the route, but once that eased I could build up more speed and enjoy the ride.” The day was such a success that Gary is considering making it an annual event; and he would like to thank everyone that supported the initiative, especially wife Sheila, Danny and Nicky.

Local party aims to make difference for the Costa In 2018 fourteen key members of local political party C.L.A.R.O broke away and established Partido Independencia Orihuela Costa (PIOC). The group is dedicated to equality and independence for the coast, seeing that this has been a positive move for neighbouring areas such as San Miguel, Los Montesinos and Pilar. PIOC believes that the coast is unfairly managed considering that 49.8 percent of the revenue for the municipality – around 60m euros each year – is generated by local residents. Since its inception PIOC has focussed on helping the local community improve services and the quality of general daily life; rubbish collection, the state of the roads, pavements and parks being the key focus areas. Peter Houghton, President, PIOC said: “The Orihuela government pays a specialist company 75,000e a month for the maintenance of parks across the municipality. We would question what is actually being achieved for that considerable investment? Certainly most of the parks on the coast look neglected and abandoned; the equipment is broken, often leaving

dangerous ironwork exposed.” Peter and his team have been working hard to expose the neglect they see in local communities. They take videos, which they post on their Facebook page and send to local and regional media to highlight the plight. Hazel Connor, owner, Paddy’s Point, said: “No-one has done more for the local community than Peter and Peter Houghton, President, PIOC his team at PIOC. For years step is to have candidates from I have been complaining to the Town Orihuela Costa stand in the next local Hall or local pressure groups about election, to be held on 28th May 2023. rubbish left uncollected, uneven However, in order to be successful, pavements, broken bins, overflowing PIOC will need the full support of the drains and dangerous parks - but local community. Unfortunately, nothing was done until PIOC became residents of Orihuela Costa do not have involved.” the best track record at turning out to In order to take its work further, PIOC vote. Which, considering the amount of is currently going through the lengthy complaints about facilities and services procedure of establishing itself as an and the general dissatisfaction with the official political party and has a legal local government in the community is team working on its behalf, but the surprising. process will take at least a further six Peter said: “The pandemic has months. The driving force behind this opened people’s eyes and changed

their attitude towards Orihuela Costa. I believe that the long walks have made people more aware of the local area, maybe seeing sights that usually would be glanced at without a really sinking in. The lack of tourism and the understanding of how much the local economy relies on visitors had also made people want the area to look welcoming and have excellent infrastructure.” Peter is hopeful that this means the local community is now ready to take control and forge its own future. To this end PIOC will be running a dedicated information programme to help all residents – of all nationalities understand how important their vote is in the local elections and guide them through the registration and voting process. This will include local information meetings at local venues such as The Emerald Isle, Paddy’s Point, La Fuente Centre and Villamartin Plazza. Written step-by-step guides in a number of languages will be printed and distributed and tutorial videos will

be available on Facebook. More residents, more votes Thanks to Brexit there are now 9,000 people registered on the padron, up from 7,000 and it is hoped that most will be motivated to vote in order to help regenerate the coast. At the last local election in 2019 of the 7,200 people registered on the padron, only 2,100 actually made the effort to vote. The crux of the matter, of course, is that there is no point people complaining about the state of the beaches, roads, pavements, parks, rubbish collections or the lack of a library, theatre, concert venue, medical centres etc if people do not exercise the right to vote. That is the only way the area will be allocated funds. Peter and his team are optimistic about the 2023 elections and excited about the opportunities that lie ahead for Orihuela Costa and about meeting the needs of the local community – but this will only happen if everyone works together. For further information contact Peter Houghton on 604 38 81 83 or through the PIOC facebook page.

Yes it took a bit of getting used to, but what was considered “new” this time last year, is now classed as “normal” when it comes to viewing a property “virtually.” (Without being in Spain in person.) Whether it’s because of travel restrictions or work commitments the easiest way of finding your new home, is online. It does take the legwork out of the house hunting process and ultimately, it will save you money. No more unnecessary renting or hotel stays, as you’ll be able to move straight into your new home once you’re able or ready to return to Spain. And it’s not just happening in the Spanish property market either! Even as the world is opening back up, many people worldwide are continuing with this “new normal” process and use the internet with video calls to secure their next home. If you’re familiar with a specific area, it does make the decision to buy “sight unseen” easier. This terminology means you’re purchasing a property without having seen it in-person. Interested in buying a house “sight unseen”? Here are 3 tips to help with your online property search:

1. Find a Real Estate Agent you trust. If you don’t trust your agent to give you a truly honest opinion, then this option is not for you. You need them to be your eyes and ears, and not only tell you the good things, but you need to hear the bad things too. 2. Watch the virtual tour (video). This is the best option, as you can have a thorough look throughout the home, going through room by room. You can easily see things like flooring to air conditioning units and light fittings. Also, if the home is being sold furnished, you can have the inventory next to you, as you scan each room. 3. Most important of all: You need to accept the home will not be 100% perfect. There may be small things that you won’t like, or that need fixing. As long as you’re prepared, it will work out fine. Buying a home “sight unseen” can be a great option if done properly. If you use the technology that’s out there, you’ll never risk losing out on a home you love and at a price you’re willing to pay, again! GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP Sterling started off strong, facing a few blips, not bumps in the road, and is finishing May confidently. This week though has been a test for the pound, despite encouraging ecostats. The provisional purchasing managers’ index was on the mark, and retail sales data increased by 9.2% in April, 42.4% above the same month last year. Yes, the numbers are distorted by artificially depressed sales during the first lockdown, but they are still positive figures. What will be interesting to watch out for is the final unwinding of the furlough scheme, and just how employment, and unemployment has really been affected by the pandemic. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves, as furlough is scheduled to end in September 2021, so still quite a way to go until the true economic picture is revealed. More news on the vaccination programme and the protection it offers against the Indian variant has supported sterling, and all eyes over the next few weeks will be on if, and when, PM Boris Johnson announces more, and potentially final, easing of restrictions. Could GBP/USD rise above 1.43 off this news? It remains to be seen, but we did recently see sterling rise above 1.42 for the first time since February, after positive economic results saw the Bank of England revise its forecasts. Government borrowing also fell in April, but it’s still the second highest for April since records began. Speaking of the Bank of England, Governor Andrew Bailey found time to describe the recent upturn in

inflation as ‘transitory’ when talking to Parliament’s Treasury Committee about monetary policy. EURO It’s been a quiet time for Europe and the euro of recent, but finally news is coming out of the block. The ECB upgraded its economic forecasts as Europe's vaccination campaign finally gathered pace. Growth is now estimated to be 4.3% for this year, instead of the 3.8% forecast from February. Positive news came from Germany, with the Ifo reporting that “sentiment among German managers has improved considerably”, with the business climate index nearly three points higher on the month at 99.2 in May. Companies are “more satisfied with their current business situation [and] regarding the coming months”. The euro barely reacted to the news though. Optimism from the UK and US banks when it comes to inflation was not matched by Europe. European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde said again that current inflationary pressures are “of a temporary nature”. Her comment suggests that the bank will not hurry to tighten monetary policy. As the vaccination programme across Europe ramps up, could the euro appreciate more in value in the coming months after a lacklustre start? The summer months will be interesting to watch and see how the euro performs against sterling, but for now, the euro is steadily creeping back.

House building project in Cala Mosca faces new obstacles Since the plan to build 1,500 new houses on Cala Mosca, the last green area of Orihuela Costa, was approved in 2007, every effort has been made to avoid this environmental disaster - which would add thousands to a population already deprived of basic services such as street cleaning and maintenance of parks and gardens. A decisive step was the presentation of a petition with more than 7,000 signatures by C.L.A.R.O in 2010 to the European Parliament. This resulted in paralysing the project for several years. In November last year, under the leadership of the Ciudadanos Councillor in charge of Urbanismo, approval by the Orihuela Town Hall came perilously close and was only stopped by the Secretary General because of numerous irregularities in the proposal. It emerged that the latest plan was not for 1,500 new houses but 2,000 which would result in an increase in the population of Orihuela Costa of some 6,000, 20 percent of the existing registered population. Since then a number of other

irregularities have emerged which could seriously damage the chances of this destructive plan being approved by Orihuela Town Hall. The latest is an intervention by the state Fiscal Prosecutor requiring an up to date census of the two protected species present in Cala Mosca, a plant and a snail. It would appear that the numbers

provided by the Developer, Gomendio, do not correspond to the reality. It could be that by underestimating the number of the two species, the Developer has obtained more land for the construction of houses. This issue, raised by the state Prosecutor, is potentially very damaging and will be followed with close attention.

It comes on top of a hugely important report by the national Traffic Department objecting to the construction project – which was then only 1,500 new houses on the grounds that the principal exit from the planned urbanisation leads directly on to N-332 and would add thousands of additional vehicles to the already congested road, plus a corresponding noise contamination. The Orihuela Town Hall has apparently no intention of requiring the Developer to take measures to meet the objections of Trafico. Finally, the Town Hall has been notified that before approval, the construction project requires a Cultural Impact Study. Among the reasons for requiring this study is the fact that remains have been found on Cala Mosca of an ancient water system which might need to be preserved. All in all, there are an impressive number of obstacles which give hope that the destruction of Cala Mosca can be saved and Orihuela Costa can maintain its last green natural area of coastline. The rest is already covered in concrete.

Should you move your pensions into one pot? By Tracy Storer Senior Partner Chorus Financial than has been paid in.

If you've had more than one job since your career begun, it's likely you've got pensions with different providers. It can be difficult to keep track of them all, and there’s a chance your money could end up in expensive, poorly performing funds as a result. So, should you consider transferring them all into one easyto-manage pension plan? Here are five reasons you might want to think about it: 1. More convenience It’s much easier to manage one pension than half a dozen. Rather than have to check values with a number of pension providers and

schemes, you only have to deal with one. 2. Greater control Bringing your pensions under one roof can also give you greater control. For example, perhaps one of your old pensions has limited investment choices. Transferring to a single pension could let you cast off these shackles and take greater control. That doesn’t mean you have to pick your own investments if you don’t want to, you can appoint a local adviser to manage your pension plan for you. As with most investments, the value of pensions can go down as well as up, so you can get back less

3. Appoint a local adviser UK based pensions will often only allow UK based advisers to manage them. This can leave people who live outside the UK in a position where some or all of their pensions limit them to seeking local advice. Moving all of your pensions into one place, could also mean moving them into a product such as an international SIPP which will allow a local financial adviser to manage them on your behalf. 4. Potentially lower costs Older pensions sometimes have higher charges, so transferring to a modern one could reduce the cost of administration and fund management. And even a seemingly small reduction in the charges you pay could increase your eventual pension pot by a significant amount in the long term. 5. Easier to track and switch It can be easier to track and switch your investments if they’re in one place. Modern pensions allow you

to look online to see where your pension fund is invested and how it’s performing. You can follow your progress and use online tools to see if you’re on the right track for a comfortable retirement. But don’t dive in without looking first As you can see, there can be several advantages to consolidating your pensions, depending on your circumstances. However, it’s important to be aware that transferring pensions isn’t right for everyone, and there’s no guarantee that you’ll be better off by doing so. Before transferring, it’s important to check your current pension/s to make sure you won’t miss out on any valuable benefits or guarantees as a result – and to check you won’t incur any excessive exit fees. An adviser at Chorus Financial will be able to help you with all this. If you have several pensions and you would like some advice on consolidating them, call Chorus today on 965 641 163, email info@chorusfinancial.es or visit www.chorusfinancial.es.

Investment contracts are intended as medium to long term investments, and all investments have some level of risk. Figures in our articles are examples of what can be achieved and cannot be guaranteed; the value of your investments can go down as well as up. Fees and charges can vary and will be fully explained to you before any advice can take place. This article should not be considered as investment advice or a recommendation of any particular product.

Cambiemos requests Mental Health Plan Cambiemos Orihuela has presented a motion to the Plenary Meeting of the council to request the development of a Municipal Mental Health plan. This would include measures to raise awareness about mental health problems, learn to recognise them and to help people know when to ask for help. In addition, they proposed a municipal psychological care service and aid to pay for private treatments. The councillor for training, María Sandoval, explained that the pandemic has generally aggravated the anxiety and/or depression experienced by people. “We propose that the Local Government create a municipal psychological care service, as other municipalities such as Murcia have already done, and pay some or all of the expenses derived from private mental health care, as a way to facilitate access urgently. “Fees are often expensive for many people and so they never apply for help because they cannot afford it. Let us think of young people, the elderly who live alone and have a low pension or the unemployed or those who work in precarious jobs, are all more likely to require psychological support and cannot access it. Tourism cheers return of the Brits Travellers from the United Kingdom are no longer subject to the coronavirus restrictions for visitors to Spain from outside the European Union and the announcement has been welcomed by Spain’s main tourist destinations. All are eager to recover from the devastating impact of the coronavirus crisis. However, although the sector has welcomed the news that Spain has lifted restrictions on British travellers, it says it is important for the UK government to place the country on its coronavirus “green list” of destinations. Currently authorities in England have placed Spain on its “amber list” of countries. This means in practice that travellers from the UK can come to Spain, but must quarantine for at least 10 days on their return and take two home coronavirus tests, which must come back negative before quarantine can end. UK Business Minister AnneMarie Trevelyan also urged British citizens not to visit destinations on the amber list unless it is strictly necessary to do so. “Please don’t go unless there is an urgent family reason and so on,” she told

Sky News. She later told Times Radio: “The reality is, at the moment, amber countries [such as Spain] are still not meeting the criteria for our scientists to say that they should be green. So the recommendation remains don’t go unless you have to and remember that, if you do go, you will have to quarantine for 10 days and that will be monitored.” But Spain’s secretary of state

for tourism, Fernando Valdés, is confident that Spain will be added to the coronavirus “green list” of destinations given transmission rates in the country are falling and the Covid-19 vaccination drive is advancing at a good speed. The next review of the UK’s traffic light system will take place on 7th June. A lot is riding on this

decision as the UK is the main source country of tourists to Spain. In 2019, 18 million UK nationals visited the country, accounting for 21.6 percent of all arrivals. The Valencia Region will be one of the destinations that will most quickly see the positive effects of the decision to lift travel restrictions on British tourists, says Nuria Montes, the secretary general of the Benidorm Hotel Association (Hosbec). Alicante province is home to the highest number of Britons in Spain, with 70,000 UK residents. What’s more, the British market makes up onethird of all international tourists to Valencia. According to figures from the tourism sector, 89 percent of visitors from the UK in Valencia travel to Alicante. According to Montes, if the UK government lifts the travel restrictions on Spain, occupancy could return to pre-pandemic levels in June. Ximo Puig, the premier of Valencia, argues the region’s low incidence rate makes it “the safest destination in Europe.”

One thousand assistants to guarantee safe beaches The President of the Generalitat, Ximo Puig, has announced the renewal of the 'Estiu Segur' program that will see the hiring of 1,000 information assistants who will ensure compliance with health regulations in the prevention of COVID-19, both on the beaches of the Valencian Community and in popular places. This was explained by the president after holding a meeting on the public health and safety arrangement for the coming summer months. The objective of the campaign is to "create a space of maximum security on the beaches of the Valencian Community", which will contribute to reinforcing the image of the Valencian Community as a safe place and holiday destination, and to reactivate the tourism in a summer season that is going to start with a good epidemiological situation. Puig pointed out that the program will promote job creation among young people, one of the most vulnerable groups in the workplace and stressed the importance of the performance of these assistants since "they will not only give advice for compliance with health regulations on the busiest

beaches but also offer tourist information and help lifeguards with the prevention of drowning". This year it will be the municipalities that will directly hire the assistants and their selection will be made by Labora. For this, the Generalitat will grant a direct subsidy of 4.5 million euros to the 71 boroughs that have a coastal beach, of which 32 are in the province of València, 19 in Castellón and 20 in Alicante. The distribution of the number of assistants per municipality will be established using objective criteria, such as the kilometres of beach, the number of hotel rooms or the services that the beaches have, among others, with a minimum number of 2 assistants per municipality. The team of assistants will provide information on the COVID-19 regulations, especially on the control of access and capacity of the beaches, ensuring

compliance with the measures contained in the Health regulations, as well as the provisions contained in Safety and Rescue plans, and contingency plans. In order to carry out the role, the people hired will receive dedicated training through IVASPE and in which Emergencies, Health and Tourism will participate, which will be mandatory and will offer the necessary tools to give the best attention and information to local residents and visitors alike. The assistants will be in constant communication with local police to ensure they are fully informed of any breaches in regulations that occur.

Paella bids for official cultural heritage status The Valencia region is aiming to turn paella into UNESCO Intangible Heritage. However, the iconic rice dish has a few hurdles to jump first. The immediate plan is to grant paella the status of Bien de Interés Cultural Inmaterial, otherwise known as a BIC, and which approximately translates to 'Intangible Heritage Interest Asset', and works in the same way as a national or regional version of the UNESCO tag. The process for declaring paella a BIC Inmaterial has already started, and was announced recently in the Official State Bulletin (BOE), the site which is updated daily with legal and government official statements. In it, paella is described as having 'diverse variants' throughout the Valencian region, which 'results in a process that encompasses all the villages, towns and cities in the Comunidad Valenciana' – in other words, the Comunidad Valenciana is the 'home of paella’ and any location within it that serves it will be giving you a 'native' version. “Paella is the epicentre of the Valencian culinary tradition and the backbone of it; this, together with its preparation process and its cultural relevance in Spain, has turned it into one of the most

prestigious global brands,” the BOE states. It's not just a dish, the announcement argues, but an edible 'thread' linking the whole of Valencian society together – it is the subject of local, national and international paella bake-offs, family events, university and fiestas, parties, college celebrations, weekend leisure, closing and opening parties, official engagements, exhibitions, and formal receptions and

conferences in embassies. Its origins come from the days when rice was an affordable staple grown in the salt-marshes between the far north of the province of Alicante and the city of Valencia, engulfing the coastal stretch of the southern half of Valencia province. Rice often made up the bulk of people’s diets and was often the only real nutritious ingredient they were able to afford. Local people will

tell you that as recently as the 1970s, and certainly in the postwar years – when hunger and poverty were widespread and over a third of the workforce was in agriculture – that at the weekends, the whole family would go out into the countryside searching for ingredients to put in the rice pot. Whatever wildlife they caught or plants they pulled up would be thrown into the rice and become Sunday lunch. The relevant authorities want paella to achieve national and international by making a very clear point about the fact it is specifically Valencian. To this end, they are seeking a Denomination of Origin, or Certificate of Origin – known simply as a 'D.O.' in most of the Latin-based languages – in the same way as is already held by Feta yoghurt, Greek cheese, champagne and various other wines, cheeses and olive oils. This means Paella could only be called paella if made in the Comunidad Valenciana, or follows the exact same processes using standard ingredients. Once all this is in place, Spain and the Valencia region will seek the ultimate kitemark: UNESCO Intangible Heritage status.

How the world starts the day Breakfast might just be the most important meal of the day, and plenty of places celebrate it in style. From tablecovering spreads to a simple sip of coffee, here's a look at what different countries around the world are eating first thing in the morning. Australia: avocado and Vegemite toast The land Down Under has been known for topping toast with avocado long before it became a craze in California. However, the Oz version sports a tangy twist: Aussies butter their toast and then smear it with Vegemite (or a similar yeast-extract spread) before adding on the avocado. Don't forget to add a hot drink – Australia's coffee culture is one of the best in the world. Jamaica: ackee and saltfish At first glance, Jamaica's staple breakfast dish looks a lot like scrambled eggs, but it's actually a tasty combination of ackee fruit, salted cod and (hot!) Scotch bonnet peppers. These three ingredients also happen to serve as a representation of Jamaica's history – the ackee fruit was introduced from Ghana and the fish from Europe (both during colonial times), while the Scotch bonnet pepper is native to the island. Turkey: Turkish breakfast spread Turkish breakfast spreads are legendary and take up a lot of room on the table. Exact dishes will vary based on the region, but you can expect a variety of bread, cheeses, jellies, butter, olives, fruit, tomatoes, cucumbers and boiled

eggs or an omelette. Turkey may be known for its strong coffee, but most Turks start the day with a cup of hot tea. Ecuador: mote pillo In the Southern Highlands of Ecuador, breakfast is prepared by scrambling eggs with chunky hominy corn that has been softened by soaking it in water. The result is a filling and delicious start to the day that will keep you satisfied until lunch. Italy: espresso Italians aren't big on big breakfasts. Instead, they prefer to start the day with a hot shot of espresso, a cup of coffee or sometimes even a latte. If that's not enough to do the trick, they're also known to nibble on sweet biscuits or the occasional small pastry. Georgia: khachapuri The country of Georgia starts off the day with its decadent national dish, khachapuri. This baked dish consists of leavened bread that has an open middle filled with melted cheese and a cracked egg. The idea is to rip off pieces of the thick crust and then dip them into the ooeygooey centre. Mexico: chilaquiles Chilaquiles is a Mexican breakfast staple that dates back to the Aztecs. It's made by simmering corn

tortilla chips with either red or green tomato sauce, and then topping them off with fried eggs, red onion, creme fraiche and either Cojita cheese or queso fresco. If you can't decide between red or green, order it "divorced" style to have it served half-and-half. Denmark: smørrebrød Tiny sandwiches for breakfast? You bet! In Denmark, breakfast looks beautiful with a selection of smørrebrød. These small, open-faced rye-bread sandwiches are topped with ingredients such as smoked herring, boiled eggs, cucumbers, thin-sliced radishes, herbs and butter or cheese. It's a fresh and fabulous way to begin the day. Russia: kasha Russians make a morning porridge out

of kasha, or toasted buckwheat groats. The porridge is cooked with either water or milk and can be eaten plain or with butter, sugar, honey or a number of different toppings and mix-ins. South India: Idli vada Idli vada with chutney and sambar is a common breakfast staple in southern India. Idli are white disk-like cakes made from steamed rice and black-lentil batter. These cakes are often eaten alongside vada, fried dough that's similar to a savoury doughnut. Small side dishes of chutney and sambar, a vegetable-based lentil soup, are also served. Morocco: msemen Msemen is a type of flatbread from North Africa. In Morocco, it's served plain for breakfast, often with honey and a hot cup of tea. You can also find quesadilla-like versions with cheese or meat fillings, but this is more of a lunchtime affair.

Portugal: patéis de nata Originally a dessert, the small Portuguese tart known as pastéis de nata is now eaten at any time of day. And it's the perfect breakfast pastry, especially when paired with a steaming espresso. This crave-worthy tart consists of creamy, caramelised egg custard that's dusted with cinnamon and cupped inside a delicate, flaky crust. In the video, which lasts about 15 seconds, Antonio Torres, one of the employees of Casa Corro, tells viewers how we should mark the area that

we want to cut from the ham with a pointed knife. And then with another knife at the ready, he explains how he removes the layers of fat until he reaches the whitest layer. Once the fat is removed, Antonio cuts a very thin slice of the popular delicacy. In the previous video, the same employee teaches viewers the first steps to prepare the ham before opening it, but has only been seen by around 2,000 people. Scientists demonstrate Covid link to erectile disfunction

I leant a friend a large sum of money so she and her husband could stay in the country. They had never applied to be residents in 25 years. I've known her a long time and she has never given me the impression that she could not be trusted to repay a loan, so I was happy to do it. She said that she would repay it as soon as she and her husband became residents. She was delighted I could help, and she constantly said that I'd saved their future here in Spain. Now, we are 12 months on and there is no sign of the money being repaid. I reminded her several times and she has fobbed me off saying they are still waiting for their cards, but a mutual friend of ours told me that they had got their cards weeks ago. When I went to their house their neighbour told me they had gone to Benidorm for two weeks. I can't help thinking they are spending the money and have no intention of paying it back. I saw my solicitor and his advice is that he should write to them in strong terms.. You value your longstanding friendship, but it seems that your friend does not. When she gets back from the holiday she did not tell you about, you should pay her and the husband a visit and remind them that without you, they would be back in England. And, you expect the debt to be repaid by a certain date. Tell them you have seen your solicitor, and that he has pointed out the implications of their actions. This, hopefully should be enough for them to settle their debt with you.

Researchers in the US demonstrated that COVID-19 can be present in penis tissue long after men recover from the virus. The widespread blood vessel dysfunction, or endothelial dysfunction, that results from the COVID-19 infection could then contribute to erectile dysfunction, according to the study which was recently published in the World Journal of

Men's Health. Endothelial dysfunction is a condition in which the lining of the small blood vessels fails to perform all of its functions normally. As a result, the tissues supplied by those vessels could undergo damage. Author of the study, Dr Ranjith Ramasamy explained, "Our research shows that COVID-19 can cause widespread endothelial dysfunction in organ

systems beyond the lungs and kidneys. The underlying endothelial dysfunction that happens because of COVID-19 can enter the endothelial cells and affect many organs, including the penis. In our pilot study, we found that men who previously did not complain of erectile dysfunction developed pretty severe erectile dysfunction after the onset of COVID-19 infection."

Alicante Gin recognised at a global level Alicante gin Malabusca conquers London and Hong Kong with two new awards. The premium gin, devised by a group of entrepreneurs from Alicante and Elche and made entirely in the Alicante province, Malabusca won the silver medal at the London Spirits Competition 2021 and named Spanish Gin of the year at the Asian International Spirits Competition of Hong Kong 2021. What began as an idealistic project between a group of friends from Elche and Alicante is on the way to becoming a gin of world reference. The Spanish gin also won silver in the San Francisco World Spirits in 2018 and was admitted entrance to the exclusive club of the Spanish

Luxury Association after a rigorous quality control process. César Ramírez, manager and head of marketing for Malabusca Gin said, “We are delighted because this is exceptional news not only for us, but for the entire sector at a very difficult time due to months in which it has not been possible to carry out the activity in leisure and restaurant restoration in a way that we would have liked. It is undoubtedly a compliment to the good work of

Spanish producers in general and of the Valencian Community in particular, of which we are delighted to be a part.” Malabusca began as a local product, available only in the province of Alicante before expanding to the Valencian Community and from there to nearby provinces such as Murcia and Albacete. Now, it is possible to find it in restaurants or gourmet stores throughout Spain, and is recommended at Michelin starred restaurants.

Child Seats and Children in Cars Children measuring 135 cm in height or less must ride in the rear seats of a vehicle, irrespective of their age, and must sit in the correct and approved seat appropriate to their size and weight. The Child Restraint Systems provide the best protection for a child when on board a vehicle. That is why the law dictates their use, to enforce the maximum protection for children. The use of child restraint systems reduces injuries by up to 75% in the event of a collision. According to data from the DGT, road traffic incidents are the leading cause of death amongst children under 14 years of age, and, tragically, 40% of those children who lose their lives wore no protection system, and, according to the statistics, could well be alive today. The law also requires seats to be of an approved standard. Those which meet the minimum required standards carry an orange label, usually located at the rear, which guarantees that the seat has undergone a series of tests to prove safety and reliability. The approval system is based on a European standard and EU regulation ECE-R44.03, which also ensures certain information is listed on the label. Classification of Child Restraint Seats There are a number of classifications for car seats

which are based on the physical characteristics of the child, the most important being weight and age. Group 0 This category includes the baby from birth through 1 year. It can be used for children up to 10 kilos of weight. There are two elements that are typically used either a bassinet with harnesses to locate in the rear seats and which engages the seat belt or a child safety seat slightly tilted that may be placed in the front seat in the opposite direction of travel, or at the rear, in which case it is preferable to place it in the centre so as to minimize possible damage in the event of a side collision. If placed in the front, we must ensure that the airbag device for the passenger seat is disconnected. It is safest to place it in the back seat in the opposite direction of travel. Group 0+ It is a new category that extends the weight up to 13 kg and for children up to 18 months. It is a chair that normally sits on the back seats and in the opposite direction of travel so as to better protect against any collision. Placing the chair in this way further protects the neck and spine. Group I Children weighing between 9 and 18 kilos, and approximately 1 to 4 years. The chairs are hooked in the seat belt of the vehicle. They are always located facing

the direction of travel, using the fitted vehicle seat belt or an extension on the chair itself. The latter incorporate a harness of 4 or 5 points of anchorage. Group II For children 3 to 6 years, which with a weight between 15 and 25 kilos. It consists of or booster cushion with backrest provided with lateral protection for the head and is fitted at the rear in the direction of travel and, if possible, in the centre. You should include lateral guides to position the belt tight at the hips, avoiding injuries in the abdominal cavity or column. Group III For children between 5 and 12 years, weighing between 22 and 36 kilos. It is a booster cushion, possibly backed with side and head protection and height adjustment, so as to allow it to be vehicle seat belt to fit firmly over the child's collarbone. Tips for buying a seat Before purchasing a child seat, check your vehicle manual for instructions on how to secure the seat and to ensure it is compatible. Take your vehicle to the location where you are purchasing the chair and ask them to demonstration assembly. Do it yourself in the presence of the seller. Take your child and try the chair in order to verify that the child can sit comfortably and safely.

More Life Less Noise and Less Smoke At 30 kilometres per hour there is more life. This is the motto chosen by the United Nations for the VI World Road Safety Week, which was celebrated between May 17 and 23, and which has practically coincided with the entry into force, in Spain, of the new speed limits for towns and cities. Along these lines, the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, during the inauguration of a conference on the impact of 30 kilometre per hour limit in the General Directorate of Traffic, has assured that, with this decision, Spain has It has become part of that small group of avant-garde countries that have chosen to reduce the maximum speeds of their cities. In addition to recalling that at 30 kilometres per hour the risk of dying in an accident significantly decreases, the Interior Minister stressed that this is a measure that goes beyond road safety because the objective is to "build calmer, healthier, more sustainable cities". In short, he said, "streets to live in, in which the public space serves to interact and exercise citizenship with freedom." Grande-Marlaska has also pointed out that this was a demand from many municipalities, expressed through the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) and also international organisations such as the United Nations, the WHO (World Health Organization) or the European Union. In addition to recalling that the accident rate in urban areas increased 6% in 2019 (in interurban it was 6%

less), 80% were vulnerable users, he has said that the 30 kilometre per hour speed limit has affected 70% of Spanish streets. A necessary regulatory umbrella Alfonso Gil, president of the Mobility Commission of the FEMP, has pointed out that the reform of article 50 of the Traffic Regulations that was approved in November 2020 and that came into force on May 11, is "a regulatory umbrella that cities needed". He spoke of a "historic" decision because "it leads us to a city without smoke, without noise and without deaths." In his opinion, it will change the appearance of cities and, also, the pattern of mobility for society as a whole. However, Gil has pointed out that there is a question to be solved before 2040, before it becomes a problem: ensuring that the distribution of goods - the pandemic has boosted in a remarkable way - must be "effective and efficient". Tactical urban planning with a paint pot As IñaquiCarnicero, general director of Agenda Urbana y Arquitectura, has pointed out, the new speed limits in cities have a "great relationship" with the sustainable city model that we want. He added that sustainable mobility involves designing "proximity cities" (with a mix of uses, the city of 15 minutes) and achieving "sustainable transport" (in which the private vehicle loses ground). Carnicero has also spoken of the socalled "tactical urbanism", a flexible and

low-cost strategy, in which "a simple paint job can make it possible to recover public space for walking." He has ensured that the 30 kilometre per hour limit "is perfectly aligned" with the Urban Agenda of Spain for the future because we will achieve better cities (less pollution and better coexistence), safer (less accidents), healthier and more dynamic from an economic view. The high cost of transportation Pedro Prieto, director of Energy Saving and Efficiency at IDAE (Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving), has put the accent on energy consumption. As he explained, we use the same energy to move as to maintain our homes. For this reason, the new modes of transport must seek, above all, energy savings, in addition to reducing our great dependence on petroleum products. In this regard, he has left on the table some alternatives such as: new ways in which we move around the city (for example, through urban planning and the promotion of low-emission zones, LEZs, which limit the use of private vehicles), more efficient use of means of transport (efficient driving courses), renewal of the Spanish car fleet (very old, over 12 years on average) and promotion of the electric vehicle. He ended by assuring that, without a doubt, the reduction of speed in urban areas will help to "promote the change of model". Within the 2030 Agenda As explained by Gabriel Castañares,

general director of Palanca Policies for the Sustainable Development Goals (ODS), speed 30 is "a coherent measure" that will serve to promote the mobility policies of the 2030 Agenda. On the one hand, he added, mortality and the severity of injuries caused by road accidents will be reduced, deaths due to pollution will decrease and "safe public spaces will be achieved, especially for the most vulnerable road users." And the distribution of goods? Jaime Moreno, general director of Terrestrial Transport, has affirmed that 30 kilometres per hour is "a safe speed" that puts the pedestrian in the centre. As he added, this change perfectly allows the development of autonomous driving. He has pointed out, however, that we must not forget the distribution of goods in cities and on the table, he has launched the proposal to create fords or loading and unloading areas in the streets, places specifically designed for that task. The example of cities: Malaga and Valladolid The councillors of Mobility of Malaga and Valladolid, José del Río and Luis ÁngelVélez, respectively, have contributed to the conference the experience of cities with speed 30. Del Río has said that this change is not a minor measure, but that it will save lives because, with a higher speed, the number of fatalities increases. He has given as an example, what has been

achieved in Malaga, on the Paseo de la Alameda, where now 70% of the space belongs to pedestrians. According to the councillor, "with road safety there is no play and there should be no political conflict." On behalf of the Valladolid City Council, Luis ÁngelVélez stressed that speed 30 is "a very important decision for the life of the municipalities", although, he admitted, it was not an easy measure to carry out from a regulatory point of view. As explained, it will allow cities to move towards more sustainable mobility, while reducing accidents, environmental noise, and pollution. The aim is to promote journeys on foot and by bicycle to the detriment of those made by private vehicle (70% of them are less than 3 kilometres). More than ten years At the close of the day, Pere Navarro, General Director of Traffic, recalled that the idea of boosting speed 30 arose more than 10 years ago, although it has only been approved now. He stressed that the objective is not to increase the number of fines that are issued, but to convince drivers that they should slow down when traveling in town. He has also highlighted the influence that this decision can have on Ibero-American countries (in fact, Costa Rica has already approved a similar measure). Finally, he pointed out that 30 as a generic speed in the city will allow removing many obstacles from the sidewalk (traffic signs, for example).

confident of catching more fish. Winner on the day and winning his first ever match with the club was Justin Hepburn. The day started well for Justin as it was his birthday. He drew the first peg on the cold side and caught carp consistently on the methiod feeder with corn for a much improved 28.74kg. He is pictured here with one of the carp, a photo he took himself remotely.

Abbey Anglers On Tuesday the 25th May we travelled up into Murcia to fish for two days on the Embalse De Argos, staying in the nearby Hotel Argos. We have not been able to fish this area due to covid restrictions and we were looking forward to fishing this beautiful lake near to Caravacca De La Cruz. On the first day the weather was set fair and 12 anglers took part. It turned out that for whatever reason the fishing was quite difficult with several anglers struggling to catch and the weights were in general quite low for this venue. Winner on the day was Richard King with 18.30kg. He fished the method feeder with corn from peg 7 on what is

Lots to talk about this week as both WorldSBK and MotoGP were in action over the weekend but first a poignant reminder that this glamourous high octane sport is very dangerous. 19 year old Swiss protegé Jason Dupasquier tragically died of injuries received In Qualifying 2 of Moto 3 after being hit by another bike. RIP Jason. In MotoGP Fabio Quartararo had a 4th straight pole position, smashing the lap record on the beautiful Mugello circuit. When the lights went out for the main show he was initially behind Peco Bagnaia and Johann Zarco but Bagnaia crashed out on lap 2 and he soon overcame Zarco. It was all overas a contest from lap 5 as the affable Frenchman stretched his lead very quickly and kept it, winning by 2.5 seconds. The fun and games were all behind him with a real battle for second between Miguel Oliviera and last season’s champion Joan Mir. Mir’s Suzuki team mate Alex Rins was also in the battle until the closing stages but he crashed out too with just 5 laps left. This was his 4th DNF in a row and he is going to have to pull his socks up if he wants to keep his seat in that competitive team. Marc Marquez’s woes continue as he went off early attempting an aggressive move that was clearly too much. How he must be looking forward to the

Second on the day was Barry Smith he put the mishaps of the following day behind him and weighed in 24.68kg from peg 7 all caught mainly on the feeder at distance. In third place continuing his good run of form was Richard King. Draw next to Justin on the cold side he again fished the method feeder with corn mainly close in for 22.04kg. myself with 20.02kg from peg 5 and Richard Woods with 15.94kg again from peg 2. The pairs competition was won by Justin and Terry Screen. I would like to thak all that took part and the Hotel Argos who really looked after us. Further details can be found on the website abbeyangling.es Ian Brown

known as the sunny side. Richard was closely followed by myself Ian Brown with 18.22kg. I also fished the feeder but caught several large barbel on the slow sinking feeder with pellet from peg 4. In third place was Richard Wood, he fished feeder, pole, corn, paste, pellet, wafter, you name it he fished it and weighed in 14.56kg from peg 2. We also fished 3 pegs on the cold side and this section was won by Graham Patterson with 8.44kg. The pairs competition was won by myself and Barry Smith. break. Quartararo’s win puts him on 105 points, 24 ahead of Zarco and a further 2 from Bagnaia. Jack Miller, winner of the last 2 races had to be content with a 6th and is in 4th with 74 points. Over in Portugal Scott Redding followed up last week’s race 2 win with a superb victory in Race 1 from Toprak Razgatlioglu and champion Jonathan Rea. He got to the first corner in the lead and stayed out front for the whole race, no mean feat under that pressure. Rea and his team decided it was time for a change and switched tyres for Sunday’s superpole race and it worked a treat, bringing the points home from Razgatlioglu and Redding to give the

podium a familiar look. Race 2 initially had a familiar look too with Rea and Redding battling it out after Razgatlioglu got a double long lap

penalty but it all went wrong for the Englishman on lap 14 when he went off. The chaos allowed Chaz Davies in on the action to claim his first podium of the season in 2nd and guess who in 3rd? No one other than Toprak who overcame the penalties for 3rd. A fantastic achievement.

Jonathan Rea enjoying another victory. (Don’t try this at home)

Redding knew he to be consistent this weekend but the fall has put him a point behind Razgatlioglu and an ominous 36 behind Rea. In reality he needs Rea to crash out a

couple of racesif he’s going to get near him because if Jonnie doesn’t win he’s always on the podium and 36 is a lot of points. In between races Mrs. Not Tim and I managed to get away with our club (Dragonriders) last weekend and although it was cut short by torrential rain a very good time was had by all. We stayed in a small town in Castellon called Benasol but the scenic highlight was a visit to Morella, a medieval town built on a hill. The roads were fantastic too and I can thoroughly recommend the area if you want a short break. Any feedback or suggestions, including venues for short breaks by email at jacknottim@gmail.com Stay safe moteros, Jack (not Tim)

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Well, it wasn’t a bad weekend for west London, was it? A week, let alone a weekend, is a long time in football and it was only seven days ago that people who know nothing about football (ahem) were writing Tommy Tuchel off as a “fraud”. Imagine saying that, especially in the national press? In my defence, I think I also said it probably would come back and bite me firmly on the backside when Chelsea won the Champions League and would you look at that? Finally, I predict something accurately. Tuchel was brought into the Chelsea to guarantee Champions League football next season and, having done his very best to avoid it in the Premier League table, nailed it with an absolute undoing of Pep Guardiola once again. Tommy T is the first manager to beat Pep three times in a row and, to be fair, even Pep doesn’t beat himself that many times consecutively. Was Chelsea’s win down to their performance or Pep’s desire to do something “a bit different” in the biggest game in the club’s history. Now, it is far from me to suggest that Peppy G got his tactics wrong but - go with me here - considering Chelsea are electric on the counter, have Ngolo Kante who gets through more work than City’s local rivals’ entire midfield in one 90 minute outing and had already shown twice this season how they go about beating them it might have made sense to pick your captain and best defensive midfielder, no? This might have also allowed your top scorer to get into those positions that allowed him to score all those goals this season, as well. Ilkay Gundogan must have gone to bed expecting to see Kante in bed before him, then in the bathroom when he got up for a latenight pee and then getting to the breakfast buffet before him the following morning. Tuchel will most likely get a new contract via fax by Wednesday meaning he is almost certain to be gone by Christmas - after all, temporary fixes have won as many trophies at Stamford Bridge as the permanent

options in a fraction of the time. If it works, don’t try and fix it. If Kevin de Bruyne is lucky, Antonio Rudiger will do the decent thing and lend him his face mask for the Euros. Where it was a good weekend for west London as mentioned, (well done Brentford, keep hold of Ivan Toney and you might stay up next season), it was a bad week for Manchester. Despite Old Trafford being able to hold more people than live in the entire place Villarreal come from, Unai Emery reacquainted himself with the feeling of being a Europa League champion. United’s failure to win on penalties David de Gea missing the 112th having not being able to save any of the ones he faced in the ultimate tribute to Peter Shilton - will kick-start a lot of transfer activity this summer. Juventus know there is one thing that United won’t be able to resist in their ongoing pursuit of Paul Pogba Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo is thought to be open to idea of a second spell at OT - nothing to do with the insane signing-on fee, the fact that nobody likes him at Juve or the wages United will throw at him. Pogba would probably welcome another spell in Italy - everyone is a winner, even Graeme Souness might be happy with this outcome. Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer is believed to have decided to pursue Erling Haaland

over Harry Kane - a wise choice given that he is (a) younger, (b) better, (c ) far less injury-prone and (d) most likely cheaper. United will try and tempt Dortmund into letting them take their two best players off them - Sancho maybe available for €70m - and we all know how open Dortmund are to doing business with the Red Devils. This means that Kane might still be off to City with Gabby Jesus heading in the other direction - that is, of course, unless Daniel Levy gets back with his ex and brings the Poch back to London. Pochettino is unhappy in Paris - well, you would be if you’d failed to win Ligue 1 and very open to returning to a better place. Would this mean Kane stays? Given the Poch didn’t exactly do much winning with PSG, you’d think not. Antonio Conte is also available and probably owns a house in London. Zinedine Zidane is also available and probably doesn’t. City might also activate a buy-back clause on Douglas Luiz which is surprising, given that Pep doesn’t seem to see the need for actual defensive midfielders anymore. Villa are expected to move for Tammy Abraham, who is suspecting his Chelsea career might be over, and Ruben LoftusCheek, also likely to be on the way out after all, Dean Smith’s last signing from Chelsea went really well, eh Ross? Sobered up yet? Many names will be linked to getting

the hell out of Arsenal this summer but Granit Xhaka seems to be first out the door - linked to Jose Mourinho’s Roma. That’s either going to be a genius move or end in tears very quickly. Watford are very keen to take Eddie Nkietah off their hands as well, and feel he is the guy to get on the end of Ashley Young’s inswinging crosses as they plan to bring him back from Inter. Brighton are looking to start their process of “selling high” and will flog Yves Bissouma to Liverpool and Ben White to one of the many admirers waving their cheque books around. If King Klopp cannot get Bissouma, he’ll take Youri Tielemens, thank you very much. Liverpool are also up for a bit of Patson Daka, Salzburg’s ready-made replacement for Erling Haaland. West Ham are also interested but, given the choice, you know which Daka will most likely prefer. Moysey will console himself by snapping up Espanyol’s assist machine Adrian Embarba - no, me neither. But then, I’d never heard of Tomas Soucek and that one came off quite nicely. Eddie Howe has left Celtic in the lurch as he was unable to get the Bournemouth band back together in Glasgow - he’ll be in Palace’s sights now along with Swansea’s Steve Cooper. Bruno Lage will be announced as the new Wolves manager this week because Jorge Mendes said so. Sean Dyche would like to nab Nat Phillips from Anfield as he won’t fancy being 5th choice this season after Liverpool signed Konate from Leipzig. Dyche also wants Forest’s Joe Worrall for about £4m. West Brom want to cash-in on Sam Johnstone for £20m which is the going rate for a relegated shot-stopper likely to be England’s third-choice in the Euros. Finally, Gary Lineker has quit BT Sport as he wants to follow Leicester in Europe with his sons next season. But Gary, what are you going to do after Christmas?

Breaking news! In a bid to blaze a trail for team Drakesmithin the semi-finals of this year’s Singles Match Play, John and Ellen came up just short, leaving the final to be battled out (as it was last year) between Mark Western and Paul Brown. In a reversal of fortunes from their previous meeting, congratulations go to Paulwho stole the spoils this year by winning 3&2. In other news, with 157 points it was Dave Pulling, Mike Brentnall, Yvonne Phipps and Nigel Price who were crowned winners in Monday’s ‘Yellow Peril plus 2’. Moving on, there were no less than 40 players in the field for Wednesday’s Stableford. It was Petina Murray who‘thundered’ into first place with 38 points, whilst new ‘Boy George’ Hogg gets his first mention after claiming

2nd place with 37 after countback from Yvonne Phipps. Two ‘2’s today; Andy Martin (I think I should only mention it when he doesn’t get one!) and Benedicte Kruse. Now most of us manage to lose one or two balls whilst navigating our way around the tricky terrain that encapsulates Las Ramblas, but Hendrick Oldenziel headlined this week by managing to pilot his trolley directly into a barranca! Probing further into this incident, our Rojales correspondent, John Shervell, aptly

observed: ‘If you’re allowed 3 minutes to look for a ball; how long do you get to find a battery?!’ Before handing you back to the studio we can report that Bryan Neal and Andrea Martin won Friday’s Greensomes with a score of 61.8. John Drakesmith together with Mike Brentnall took silver with 63.0. On a lighter note a courtroom artist was arrested today for an unknown reason, details are sketchy! Pues hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell

Welcome back petanca to Orihuela Costa. We have missed you during the last year. Both the Torrevieja and Sunshine Leagues are well into the Spring/Summer season. Summer of 2020 and Winter of 2020/2021 having been completely cancelled due to covid. Luckily most of the players here did not catch it and have now had their two jabs. Players were so happy to meet and greet other people but NO hugging yet. It is fair to say that some teams have fallen by the wayside, some have had to find new pistes to use and some have recruited new members. We are all getting back to normal as best we can. The Monday Torrevieja League currently consists of 8 teams. 6 from the bar Dominos plus Pumas and Rojales Thader. It would be

great if other teams joined the league for Winter. We sure have fun but do take the game competitively. At the time of writing Domino McCoys head the leader board with Domino Genesis holding the column up. The Sunshine League has 4 divisions with 27 teams spilt between them. The current leaders are Division 1 Rocajuna 1, Division 2 Europea, Division 3 Falcons, Division 4 Laguna Rosa Bandits

The photo is of Domino Dolphins after losing a match 4 games to 3. If you are interested in learning to play petanca, then go along to a local club and have a chat, you will be most welcome.
