Online bullying increased by 39% in Alicante province School closures during pandemic did not reduce cyber bullying The closures of schools and segregation of students did not reduce

cases of cyber bullying in the Valencian Community, a new report has revealed. Despite less contact between students over the last two academic years,

reports of cyber bullying have actually increased with half of all registered cases of cyber bullying in the Valencian Community taking place in the Alicante province. Over the last year, bullying over the internet has increased by significantly in schools (both primary and secondary) in the Alicante province. As part of the Valencian Community’s ‘Previ’ prevention programme which aims to tackle bullying and violence in schools, a log of incidents in the Valencian Community during the 2019-20 academic year shows that almost half of reported cases of online bullying took place in the Alicante province. This was during a time when students were not physically at school from March until June due to the pandemic.

According to figures provided by the Minsitry of Education, over the last two years, cyber bullying has increased by up to 33% in schools in the Valencian Community and by up to 39% in schools in the Alicante province specifically. Face to face bullying is down 25% generally and 27% in the Alicante province specifically. Research carried out during lockdown indicates that of course, a decrease in face to face bullying is due to the closure of schools but a lot of what went on in the school yard was pushed towards cyberspace and a marked increase in online bullying has been noted.

Raquel Pastor is a trainer and certifier of the KiVa method against bullying which was developed in Finland and is now being rolled out in some schools in the Alicante province. Pastor explained that the bases for online bullying are the same as ‘traditional’ bullying – a lack of empathy and a desire for power and status within the peer group. She said, “More respectful communication is needed, the rules are the same in the real and virtual world. The students are online, they have a lot of contact and it is important that parents know what their children are doing online, if they are in contact and with whom, just as if they do it in person.” Valencian Minister for Education, Vicent Marzà, said that his department has "increased by more than 33% the staff of the specialized Attention and Intervention Units" in each territory. For example, Alicante has one inspector and three counsellors. He also revealed that each school has a coordinator for equality and coexistence "with specific training", and that "more than 800 teachers have taken courses on the prevention of bullying and cyberbullying at school" during the last two academic years.

Giant squid washed up in Castellón A giant squid, weighing in at 150kg, was washed up on the beach in Castellón, north of Valencia. The deceased creature was discovered on the shore of Gurugú beach in an advanced state of decomposition. Two tractors worked together, under the direction of local police, to remove the animal’s remains from the beach. Most specimens when they are found are in very poor condition as they are

either washed up dead or found in the stomachs of dead sperm whales. Sometimes, fishing trawlers catch specimens which are then sold to museums, such as the Museum of Giant Squid in Asturias which houses the largest collection on public display.

New traffic cams in Alicante If you have driven in or around Alicante city lately, you may have noticed new white cameras perched above the city’s various traffic lights. Over the last three weeks, Alicante city council has installed 156 of these cameras which form part of an intelligent traffic management network. The system won’t be fully operational for another few months but when it is up and running, will be one of the most sophisticated systems of its kind in Europe. More cameras are yet to be installed, probably around mid July, but already those installed will soon begin gathering data to allow technicians to improve traffic management. Controllers will also be able to access public lighting as well as monitor service machinery such as street sweepers. The information that is not subject to

the restrictions of Data Protection Laws will be uploaded to the municipal website, in real time, so that, for example, a courier company, a taxi or any vehicle planning to traverse the city can modify its route depending on the state of congestion on the roads. The city council has assured motorists that the cameras will not act as speed traps. The cameras (which have two megapixel StarLight Technology, infrared lighting, intelligent perimeter protection, 360 ° continuous horizontal positioner, optical zoom and a weight of 3.6 kilos) have not yet they broadcast images to the control centre. When they begin do so, from September, they will respect the data protection law by encrypting information extracted from the reading of car registration number.

More than 60kg of rubbish collected from La Mata nature reserve Volunteers gathered over 60kg of rubbish from the Natural Park in La Mata this weekend. The initiative was supported by a number of national and local groups including Ecoembes and Proyecto

Mastral. Volunteers gathered plastic bottles, discarded masks, cigarette boxes and even a paper dispenser. The 13 strong group walked over two kilometres around the

perimeter of the park, armed with gloves and bags to collect items discarded by people in the park. The rubbish was classified and later deposited in containers for disposal or recycling.

€500 raised for DEBRA the Butterfly Children Charity On Friday 11th June at the Hillside Bar & Snooker Centre in Urb. La Marina, DEBRA held its first fundraising event this year, with Tommy Rogers as Host and Quizmaster - a good night was had by all. The evening started with supper followed by the Fun quiz won by The Numpties. With ticket money, raffle and various fundraising throughout the evening raising €330, a donation of €60 from the Lemon Challenge held at the Hillside Bar gave the charity a total of €390, Lorna Cowen donated €10 to round it up to €400. Organisers told the Costa Blanca People, “This opened the flood gates and many guests gave personal donations with young Stanley giving us his pocket money. As our youngest volunteer Stanley decided to go around shaking his bucket where another €34.31 was added to the pot. Carl, Kelly

& Aunt Flo gave us a donation which brought the final total to €500.” A spokesperson for DEBRA continued, “A Big Thank You to Tommy & Sue Rogers for all their hard work in organising the quiz and play your cards right. Kelly, Carl & Aunt Flo for all their hard

work and Stanley for his bucket collection. What a great night for our charity, thank you to everyone who attended and your continued support and generosity. We look forward to many more fundraising evenings at the Hillside Bar & Snooker Centre. “

Responsibility requested to help clear coastal streets Twenty months have passed since the Vega Baja was hit by DANA, which inevitably generated massive rubbish deposits of all kinds of waste next to the rubbish bins across the neighbourhoods of Orihuela city, districts and coast. Since then the Department of Street Cleaning says that its collection service has been making an extra effort each day to keep the street clean but it is difficult “due to the lack of collaboration of some residents, who continue to leave belongings, household goods and furniture on the streets. These actions carry serious consequences for both the population and the environment”.

In recent months, the dumping of sinks and toilets and remains of plumbing work, as well as mattresses, entire kitchens, rubble, etc., generated by small home renovations in our streets, has also increased considerably, according to the Councillor for Street Cleaning Dámaso Aparicio. He said: “It is important to end these illegal deposits for which awareness campaigns are continually being carried out with dissemination on social networks, press and radio so that citizens know the correct procedure to follow to get rid of their old junk.” More than 500 incidents have been brought to the attention of the Orihuela Local Police, which is in charge of investigating and

determining who is responsible and then raising the relevant fine for leaving waste without authorisation. The Councillor said: “We need residents to collaborate by reporting these events to the Orihuela Local Police and to act in a civic manner. Otherwise, no matter how many resources we allocate to this service, we will not see our streets clean, since it is impossible to have cleaning workers and policeman on duty 24 hours-a-day next to each container.” There is a free collection service available to Orihuela Costa residents on 966076100 ext. 3516/4511 or www.orihuelalimpia.com

Padron registration campaign The Department of Immigration, led by Almudena Baldó, has announced the start of a campaign to encourage people to register on the padron. The councillor said: “The municipality has a considerable floating population of foreign residents, especially in its coastal area and some districts. Many of these residents have not registered on the padron and this is what we are trying to change. “These non-registered residents causes cannot access many social

or health benefits. The same occurs with groups from nations of the European Union and other third states such as the United Kingdom and even Spaniards reside in our municipality without being registered. The councillor explained that the Department of Immigration has launched a campaign to promote registration so that people can register and ensure they have all civic and social and health rights. This will be promoted through a 20-second

video which can be viewed at: www.orihuela.es/empadronate ”. The campaign uses viral marketing techniques in order to reach the largest number of people possible and those interested can obtain more detailed information on the website, both on the advantages of registration on the padron, as well as the requirements and the process to follow. All information is available in four selected languages: Spanish, English, French and German.

BITE SIZE NEWS: New bus station Torrevieja has approved the project for a new municipal bus station. The new state of the art facility will replace the current premises, owned and managed by Costa Azul, and will likely be constructed at the same location. The first step, exploration in terms of planning, safety and environment will be underway this year. The project has a budget of €60,000 during 2021 and a further €147,000 for 2022 in order to start the process. New niches for La Mata cemetery La Mata cemetery will see 124 new ‘niches’ (vertical plots) added. The project will cost €88,424 and will take around two months to complete. Budget passed Torrevieja has finally been able to pass its municipal budget after many false starts. Opposition had tried to stop the budget in court, but this was overruled. The town hall will now take the opposition to court for the cost of the delays. A spokesperson said “At least now things can move forward, there are many projects that have been put on hold, like La Siesta Park. Now we can get things going again.” The spokesperson also said that the impact of the delays means the townspeople have suffered because of the political agenda of a certain group of people. They added, “The town hall has done all it can to help citizens and business owners during Covid. We have brought the cost of the IBI tax down as

low as is allowed by central government, and we are not charging taxes or fees for the market stalls or use of terraces by bars and restaurants at all in 2021. Now that the budget is passed, we can add to this by moving forward with other plans too.”

Vaccine update An update from the CMO vaccine centre in Torrevieja says that all citizens over 60 theoretically should have been vaccinated. If you are over 60 and you have not received your vaccine, you should go to your health centre and make enquiries as there is likely an error in your contact details. Furthermore, all of those who are staying in Torrevieja for more than two months can obtain a temporary SIP number in order to be vaccinated if they have not already been vaccinated in their home country. To obtain a provisional SIP number, there is a form on the health department website, or you can go to your nearest health centre for advice. Holidaymakers should be vaccinated in their home country, but those staying for longer periods of time (over two months for example) can ask to have their first, second or both doses here. For those who were given the first dose with Astrazeneca, they will be given the second dose of Pfizer, but they can request for Astrazeneca to be administered for the second dose instead. If this is the case, the patient will be asked to sign a form to acknowledge that they are aware of the studies carried out showing the risk of thrombosis with the Astrazeneca made vaccine (which is

called Vaxsevria).

Shopping bonus The shopping bonus scheme ‘Bono Consumo’ was announced this week as a joint initiative between the town hall and local businesses. From 18th June, citizens can log in to the site (https://torrevieja.bonoconsumo.es) and purchase vouchers of 5, 10 and 25 euro to spend in local businesses. The idea is that the vouchers can be used for special offers or discounts and so, will save money for the consumer. There is a maximum of 100 euro in vouchers for each person. Bl**dy Mosquitoes! The town hall has been working flat out to tackle the recent plague of mosquitoes in Torrevieja. Many citizens have enquired why they don’t spray with the aeroplane anymore but a spokesperson told us that this is no longer allowed from a European level. Every day, the facebook page ‘Torrevieja Sanidad’ publishes a list of the areas that have been sprayed. The last number of weeks have been challenging due to the constant rain every few days. Add to this, the number of private pools that have been unmanaged for almost 18 months due to the pandemic, and the mosquito population became out of control. If you have a problem in your area, email the full address and telephone number (preferably of a Spanish speaker) to sanidad@torrevieja.eu or DM through the Torrevieja Sanidad Facebook Page

HELP Vega Baja expands its support to the community This week HELP Vega Baja introduced its new Welfare Team. Following a request for volunteers, a team of 6 new volunteers were appointed. President of the charity, Michele Masson said: “The new Welfare Team provides a far greater opportunity to support people who are struggling with welfare related needs. Not only do we now have people who have experience with benefit applications such as attendance allowance, we have a team that has vast experience in other areas. For example, we have a qualified Occupational Therapist with experience working alongside patients with dementia and Alzheimer’s. Sonia can be called upon to offer general advice and make recommendations on mobility aids, adaptations in the home etc. “Similarly, the team will be able to call upon other team members plus of course the practical support that HELP Vega Baja is renowned for. With experienced listeners on-board we are also able to offer emotional support. Several members of the team have experience volunteering with UK Samaritans, and counselling. We are also very aware of the support needed for carers and we have several projects in mind which we believe will support this group of

Additional help at hand

people, many of whom struggle daily. We would like to remind people that all our services are offered completely free of charge.” Following the success of creating the Welfare Team the charity is now looking to recruit a fundraising team. Working together it is hoped that fundraising can start once again. “We very much appreciate the support we receive in our charity shop and at the various market stalls we attend but we need to raise funds with events, raffles and other fundraising opportunities. If anyone is interested in becoming part of

this new team, please do get in touch,” Michele added. Based at their San Miguel Centre, the Welfare Team coordinated by a member of the Elective Committee, is ready to meet people and can be contacted by calling 966 723 733, WhatsApp on 634 313 325, email: office@helpvegabaja.com or simply by sending a message via the charity Facebook page. HOW TO CHOOSE “WHERE” TO BUY A HOME Rebecca Serwotka Rebecca Serwotka - Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward - 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today!Featured on Best Buy Spain - Property TV.

Deciding where to buy is just as important as choosing the right home to purchase. Location should be taken into consideration when searching for your ideal place in the sun. For example running costs on the property can vary depending on which Town Hall/municipality the home is registered under. Here are 3 points to pay attention to, when choosing an area: 1. What are the annual rates/council tax (IBI Suma) on the property? You’ll find the coastal towns do charge more than the smaller villages, as they have more overheads. Remember the coastal Town Halls have to pay for the maintenance of our lovely beaches! 2. Is the property amongst residents or in a tourist area? The Costa Blanca offers many beautiful places to own a home. If you’re heading

to the coast, many beach towns close down for the winter months. If you’re planning on using your property during Winter, you should consider a location where there are residents. This means that all local amenities will remain open year round. 3. Will you need to apply for permission from the Ministry of Defense? If you are a British Citizen (Not an E.U. member), you may need to apply for a certificate granting you permission to own a property in certain areas. If a property is located on Military land, you’ll need to apply for a criminal record check from your country of residence. This can delay your completion by months! When purchasing a property, choosing the right location is more than about how pretty it looks! To learn more about the buying process in the Costa Blanca, head to www.BuyMyHomeInSpain.com to download a complimentary Spanish Property Buying Guide for 2021.

Missing Financial Adviser? Maybe your financial adviser has retired or moved away and the parent company has allocated you an adviser you have never met, it might now be the perfect time for an independent review by a local adviser. If you are currently paying a financial adviser to manage your investments, but never sit down in front of your adviser to review your portfolio, then you are what we would call an orphan client. However good the funds looked when your money was invested, if the markets are not monitored and your funds assessed, then there is a danger that your money is not being managed to ensure the best possible returns.

If your current adviser does not offer this service, then you might wonder why you are paying an annual management fee.

If you would like to talk to an expert, then I would be happy to discuss your requirements and recommend the best options for you.

Many people had endowment mortgages in the eighties and nineties and were told that at the end of their mortgage, there would be enough money left over for that dream car or holiday. Unfortunately, as the funds were not monitored, most people found they had a shortfall and needed to switch to a repayment mortgage.

There are a number of financial advisers on the Costa Blanca so the question is “why choose Seagate?” I believe that we offer a unique service to our clients. We have a fully staffed local office in Benijofar with a back-up admin team, a Client Account Manager and a Relationship Manager. This means that we have a team that will support you with six monthly reviews of your investment or pension and we provide full administration for withdrawals, encashments and tax guidance.

The above is simply an example of how important reviews of your investments are to ensure your goals can be realised.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP Another week of mixed fortunes eventually left sterling only 0.2% lower on average against the other majors. It was unchanged against the euro and added seven eighths of a US cent. On Wednesday the pound shared last place with the NZ dollar and the following day it led the field. The trickle of UK economic data during the early part of the week was positive for sterling. House price measures from Halifax and the RICS both portrayed robust demand for residential real estate. Halifax reported that house prices rose 1.3% in May, putting annual growth at 9.5%. In its statement, the building society said that evolving tastes, growing confidence and a further easing of restrictions “are likely to support house prices for some time to come, particularly given the continued shortage of properties for sale”. Bank of England Chief Economist Andy Haldane was also chatting about the property market, saying it was, “on fire” and that the economy is “going gangbusters”. The BRC reported that “Retail sales were buoyant in May thanks to the reopening of hospitality, coupled with the afterglow of non-essential retail’s own return”. Sales for the month were up by 18.5% from May last year.Sterling’s only real stumbling block was Brexit. The EU told Britain that continued failure to comply with the withdrawal treaty would result in economic sanctions, and US President Joe Biden warned the UK PM not to imperil the Good Friday peace agreement. EURO The main event for the euro was Thursday’s

European Central Bank monetary policy press conference. Following a statement that rates and asset purchases would not be adjusted, President Christine Lagarde explained that rates will not go up until the 2% inflation target sustainably achieved. Because investors had been hoping (albeit unreasonably) for something a little more hawkish from the ECB, the euro lost ground on most fronts following her appearance. It is an average of 0.2% lower on the week. A broadly uninspiring set of Eurozone economic statistics included some quite striking numbers but almost all could be explained by Covid-driven lockdowns 12 months earlier. The revised numbers for first quarter gross domestic product showed the Eurozone economy shrinking by 0.3% in Q1. Among the individual countries the outliers were Ireland, which enjoyed 7.8% growth, and Portugal, which suffered a 3.3% contraction. Other data from Europe showed economic sentiment (investor confidence) softening in Germany and in the Eurozone as a whole. Expectations are nevertheless high, and “the outlook is now much more positive than in summer 2019”. A 23.9% annual increase in Euroland retail sales looked less impressive alongside the 3.1% monthly decline. There were similar dichotomies with German factory orders (up 78.9%, down 0.2%) and industrial production (up 26.4%, down 1%). The Sentix survey of more than 1,500 European analysts and institutional investors found them more confident than at any time since February 2018. Its investor confidence index for the Eurozone was up by seven points at 28.1.

Alicante man hid camera in ex’s bathroom A man has been arrested in Alicante for installing a spy camera in the bathroom of his expartner. National Police officers arrested a 40-year-old man of Dominican nationality, accused of alleged crimes against privacy, breaking and entering, corruption of minors and child pornography. It was the underage daughter of the complainant who discovered the hidden camera behind the grille covering of the ceiling extractor fan in the bathroom. Mother and daughter immediately went to Alicante

National Police Station. The woman’s ex still had her spare key and so was the prime suspect once the crime was reported. The relationship had ended, but the man remained living there while he found another place to stay. It is believed that he placed the wireless camera during this interval. The mini camera had Wi-Fi so it could be controlled remotely, in addition to storing the recordings on a memory car. When officers viewed the footage, they could even see how the defendant

placed the camera in the extractor fan opening, securing it with duct tape. In other recordings, the victim's youngest daughter could also be observed, so officers of the Minors department joined the investigation in order to process additional charges. The man was subsequently arrested and charged with a series of crimes. The victim also asked for a restraining order. The detainee, without priors, has been placed at the disposal of the Alicante Court of Investigation.

LET TERS TO THE EDITOR Dear Editor Re: Page 8 - Skeletal donkey rescued by local centre Week after week, another poor animal is rescued. Be it a horse or a donkey. Fines are issued to the owners, but that money should be given to the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre ! It is beyond belief, that these valiant people, do not receive a single cent from the fines issued, to assist them, in the fantastic job they do. Something is wrong with the Spanish authorities, as I believe the Guardia Civil are involved, in making sure, the Easy Horse Rescue Centre, both collects the animals and cares for them.

What is going wrong here. I have rescued a 3 month old dog, sealed in a black plastic bag, placed in a wheelie-bin outside a Mercadona supermarket. What is going wrong in Spain, regarding the care of animals. Not much, is there! PM-S Dear Editor The 'Letter to the Editor' in this week’s edition (892) suggesting a 'NON RESIDENT HOME OWNERSHIP CERTIFICATE' made me laugh but sadly it demonstrates the sense of entitlement and loose grip on reality some (too many) Spanish holiday home owners seem to harbour.

Simple property ownership has never been and never should be a reason to discriminate either for or against any British citizen, it's an obscene and utterly self serving suggestion. The suggestion that an up to date padrón be include in the supposed qualifying package further evidences the writers’ lack of comprehension. It's 90 days in any 180 - or Spanish residency, property owning or not there is no middle ground! C Farmer

Scaremongering! By Sam Kelly DipPFS, EFA, BA (Hons) Managing Partner Chorus Financial

Without fail, every time there’s a new piece of legislation or an update that may affect Brits living in Spain, certain financial advisory companies will shape it into something to encourage you to send your hard-earned money to them! We saw this very obviously with the Modelo 720 in Spain, where financial advisers, left right and centre, would use our lack of familiarity with this simple form to encourage you all to move your monies into ‘compliant investments’. Now, compliant investments in themselves, for example ‘Spanish Compliant Investment Bonds’ can be very useful products for those looking to invest, but moving monies into them that you didn’t intend to invest, simply to avoid completing a simple asset declaration, may not be the best advice. We then saw my industry having a

field day with Brexit! Over the last few years there’s been a rush to try to encourage people to move their money into trusts, QROPs, all sorts of exotic (and often expensive) arrangements- basically anything outside the UK. As if the UK would suddenly prevent those living in the EU from having a pension or some savings! There are Brits living all over the world who still have UK based pensions, bank accounts, savings etc. The idea that those of us living in the EU will suddenly lose access to ours is simply not true. The latest trend is back to good old QROPs! QROPs, which are overseas pensions recognised by HMRC, are an effective pension vehicle for certain clients. For example, if you are approaching your pensions Lifetime Allowance (currently £1,073,100) then Chorus may well recommend a QROPs because this may offer significant benefits. However, for most of you, a UK SIPP designed for Brits living overseas should likely provide you with everything you need. You can enjoy a well-regulated and flexible pension product without the need for a QROPs. Chorus clients would generally pay around £500 per year more for a QROPs than a UK SIPP, so we must ensure this additional

cost is justified. With other firms in Spain, we’ve seen clients pay over 6% in layered(andpossibly hidden) fees on their QROPs, which is why we always urge caution before moving your pensions to such arrangements. So, right on cue, I’m seeing adverts scaremongering people to move their pensions out of the UK on the basis that UK based pensions ‘may’ be exposed to Wealth Tax… one day… possibly… in our post-Brexit world! Let’s be clear here, there is a small risk of this, but would you really consider a significant financial decision based on something that is very unlikely to happen? Beyond that, do we really believe that Spain, a country that has been embracing Brits for decades, that has employed thousands of people to help Brits with their residencias etc, would introduce such damming and illogical legislation against an essential group to Spain’s economy? Come to think of it… I suspect many of you may think they would! But let me reassure you, Spain has never demonstrated any negative bias to us Brits here and I cannot imagine them being motivated to do so in the future. Let’s be practical here, if such legislation were ever confirmed, then

clearly Chorus would assess those of our clients potentially affected and take the appropriate action. If that meant moving our UK SIPP clients to QROPs, then we would work with those clients to find the best, lowest price solution, ensuring no client is left out of pocket. We would certainly not be moving them to a QROPs layered with unnecessary fees, product tie-ins, hidden commissions etc. Financial advice should always be appropriate and client focussed, not a ‘one-solution-fits-all’ approach where every client is encouraged to go into the same products, the same funds, possibly even an unnecessary trust. Our industry should focus on low cost, transparent, high quality advice and ensure each client has their individual needs considered. If you want to seek a second opinion on your savings, pensions and investments from a company who guarantee no unnecessary or hidden fees, and a 100% ethical and clientfocussed approach, then contact me direct today on s.kelly@chorusfinancial.es, +34 664 398 702 or visit www.chorusfinancial.es for more information.

The 31-yearold is said to have been rushed to hospital with a severe head injury and damage to internal organs as well as multiple fractures. Local reports said the unnamed Brit had tried to jump into the swimming pool below the third-balcony during a party with friends, a practice known as balconing in Spanish. Reports claim that the man missed the water and instead hit a sunshade next to the pool before crashing to the ground. The incident happened around 7pm at an apartment complex in San Pedro de Alcantara near the popular tourist resort of Marbella. Emergency responders spent nearly 40 minutes stabilising the injured man at the scene before he was taken by ambulance to the Costa del Sol Hospital a 20-minute drive away. He was subsequently transferred to another hospital in Malaga and admitted to intensive care. His condition has been described as “very serious.”

The pandemic has wreaked changes on us all and local charities have felt its effects too. Many businesses are working at a reduced capacity, but the number of animals rescued by Finca la Castellana each week has increased. Most of these are pets that can no longer be looked after due to people losing their jobs or returning to their home countries, rather than animals found abandoned on the streets. Of course, it makes no difference to the charity where these animals come from, they need help, love and care...and the charity needs your support in order to do this. An open day was held on Sunday (13th June) to raise funds, but donations can be made at any time. The charity’s third charity shop opened in Los Dolces yesterday - Monday 14th June – so please pop down to show your support ad browse the goodies that have been kindly donated. Royal British Legion Concert Band success Following the Royal British Legion Concert Band’s success in December playing at 'Carols in the Square' both in Torrevieja and Pilar de la Horadada, the band was ready to start rehearsing again in January. However, once again, because of covid restrictions, it had to cancel all activity until the end of March. The band is now in rehearsals for the Joint Armed Forces Day Service in Orihuela Cathedral, to take place on Saturday 26thJune. This is the third time that this important event has taken

place and gives the opportunity to support the work of the many who serve in our respective countries armed forces; sailors, soldiers, airmen and here in Spain members of the Guardia Civil, the national and local police forces. Looking to the future the band will be very busy later in the year with a centenary concert in Alicante, Poppy Appeal launches in Benidorm and La Zenia Boulevard and the annual Remembrance services in November and of course Carols in the Square,

Torrevieja in December. The Royal British Legion Concert Band is always looking for more musicians to join the string, woodwind and brass sections. If you are interested please contact Graham Robinson at: robinsongraham256@googlemail.com or call 658663846, or alternatively come along to one of the bands rehearsals. These are held in the basement of the Sophia Wellness Centre, Cabo Roig every Thursday afternoon 4pm - 6pm, you will be made very welcome.

Investment in Employment The Spanish government has announced a €5 billion investment in tackling unemployment in young adults, and legal changes that mean temporary job contracts can only be issued where a nonpermanent position can be 'justified'. Work minister Yolanda Díaz (Unidas Podemos) has called for companies to engage with the government's quest to get young people into the job market and building up a career. “We cannot keep having young adults on salaries of €436 a month,” she argues. “It gives a very poor impression of our country, our national culture, and our companies.” With the funding, a microcredit programme and free legal and financial advice will help young people who wish to do so to start their own businesses, and Sra Díaz (fifth picture) calls it 'the greatest investment since the Transition to democracy' in 'tackling one of the key problems in this country'. The umbrella project is called the Plan de Garantía Juvenil Plus ('Youth Guarantee Plus Plan'), but

has many different sub-sections, and will be rolled out over the next six years, financed by the European Social Fund. Sra Díaz warns that unemployment in the under-25s, particularly, is 'a huge problem in our in-tray', although young adults out of work the scheme will target are likely to be aged up to 30 or 35. Joblessness in the young in Spain varies drastically according to region, but the national figure is over 39 percent - the highest in the Eurozone. “We cannot have a country without young people, without the talents of our young adults in our businesses,” says Yolanda Díaz. The scheme has been worked out with significant input from companies and unions, as well as the regional governments, and its six key areas focus on career advice, training and education, job opportunities, equal opportunities, new business and becoming self-employed, and brand improvement. Sra Díaz says the ultimate aim is to offer 'personalised advice and guidance for every single young person' and provide them

with the skills, training and qualifications they need to 'transform our productivity as a country'. She calls for both the public and private sector to engage as much as possible and for a 'change in corporate culture', attracting back home those young adults who have been forced to emigrate to find meaningful work. Spain's governments, of varying political colours, have often pointed out that its younger adults are among the most qualified in history; typically they will be aged 22 or 23 when they finish university, and a college education or the equivalent vocational training is almost essential for being able to get any job at all, let alone a meaningful career. And even lower-skilled positions generally require experience in applicants, as onthe-job training for those with potential but little or no history in the rôle is limited; getting this experience is, however, impossible without having a job first, resulting in a vicious circle many young adults find themselves unable to break.

Spain reminded to test all tourists by EU The European Commission has asked Spain for "coherence" after it relaxed some coronavirus travel restrictions. It has pointed out that the consensus within the EU is to require a negative PCR for tourists from outside the European Union travelling to a member state - and that includes the British. The Spanish government had relaxed travel restrictions on passengers from several countries that allowed them to enter the country without complying with the EU-wide measure "It is your responsibility, but we ask for consistency for the good of the citizens of the European Union," said the chief spokesman of the European Commission, Éric Mamer, when asked about the opinion of Brussels on the Spain's decision to allow passengers from the United Kingdom to enter its territory without a PCR test requirement. In addition, the European Commission spokesperson for Home Affairs, Adalbert Jahnz, has pointed out to Madrid that the recommendation endorsed by 27 member states establishes that they must “request a negative PCR from all people from outside the EU who travel, whether for essential reasons or not". That said, it may exempt "vaccinated" tourists from

this requirement. Only "in the specific case", said Jahnz, that a member state exempts European vaccinated passengers from the PCR test requirement in their country of origin could they apply the same exemption to non-EU travellers. The spokesperson added, the European Commission expects member states to "apply this approach in a fully coordinated manner". The Spanish government defended its change of criteria that was introduced on 24th May, in which tourists from several countries were not required to present any coronavirus test regardless of whether they are vaccinated or not, despite reminders from Brussels. The EU does have a small list of less than ten countries outside the bloc with which it allows nonessential travel - although subject to restrictions such as PCR or quarantines – but the countries of the United Kingdom are not on it

despite the fact that some member states, including Spain, requested it. However the list, which includes countries such as Israel, Japan and Australia, is not mandatory because border management is ultimately the responsibility of each national government. In the case of travel within the European Union, the 27 member states have agreed on guidelines so that only travellers in green areas are exempted from all kinds of restrictions on their movements. It is recommended that negative PCR tests should be requested at the departure or arrival point of the trip for the orange and red areas and that this requirement be mandatory for those travelling from dark red areas.

Local AstraZeneca appointments moved back Hundreds of local residents aged between 60 and 65 in the are Community Valencian currently receiving text messages from the health department cancelling their appointments for the second dose of the AstraZeneca COVID jab. The first reports were made public last week as confused locals, who were looking forward their completing to

immunisation over the coming weeks, received texts telling them they would have to wait a little longer. The confusion has arisen because the first people in this age group to be vaccinated back in were given a second appointment ten-weeks after the first. At the time this was in line with the guidelines for the AstraZeneca covid vaccination

strategy. However, the medical guidelines have since been updated and this means appointments are being deferred. A spokesman for the Generalitat issued an statement informing patients that they will shortly receive another SMS text message giving them a new date, time and place for their second dose, timed to be administered 12 weeks after the first.

Spain joins EU ‘Covid pass’ scheme Spain has been included now on the European Union's list of countries issuing the so-called 'green passport' – at the beginning of today (Monday), its status was showing as 'ready', but this has changed to 'in effect' after the ministry of health made contact with Brussels. Seven regions are now starting to issue 'Covid passports' showing the holder has been vaccinated, is immune through having had the virus, or has a negative test result. Several thousand of these cards were requested in one day alone, and although the national health authority has started the transactions for sending them out via its own website, the responsibility for issuing them lies with regional governments. So far, the Comunidad Valenciana – made up of the three provinces of Alicante, Valencia and Castellón – the southern region of Andalucía, and in the north, Galicia, Aragón and Navarra have just started issuing 'Covid passports', whilst Extremadura, in the west, has already handed over 1,297 of them and Castilla y León, north of the centre, is up to 8,682 'passports'. The national health ministry has received a further 60 applications for these via its website, mainly from regions that have not started printing them directly. Director-General of 'digital health', Alfredo González, says he

is 'confident' that the 'majority' of region will start to produce them over the course of this week. He says all of them should be doing so in time for July 1, when these become compulsory for cross-border travel. Although it is still a pilot scheme for the rest of this month, the documents issued pre-July will still be valid from the start and continue to be so after they become mandatory. Spain is now country number nine to join the 'green passport' scheme and it status is currently 'in effect' according to the list. transport Meanwhile, authorities have moved quickly: 'Covid passport' readers are now in place in all Spanish ports and airports for any passengers arriving from other European countries. Creating the Europewide 'green passport' has been 'a complex operation', González admits: Preparation started around two months ago and over 200 meetings between the health ministry and the regional governments took place, since some regions 'had a more advanced system than others'. Also, Spain had to ensure its systems nationwide were set up to be able to recognise 'Covid passes' from all EU member States issuing them. González stresses that from the very moment a person has his or her 'green passport', they can travel to another EU member State immediately, and no other

requisites for entry are required. In Spain, however, the traveller information form still has to be completed and the 'Covid certificate' entered on it, meaning the details on the will passport' 'green automatically appear when the usual QR code, generated by the travel form, is scanned by border guards. Elsewhere, as long as the destination country is part of the scheme, the traveller only has to scan the 'pass', without having to queue. It either comes in paper format or can be downloaded onto a mobile phone, both of which can be scanned. González says he is reluctant to call it a 'passport', since not having one is no barrier to travelling within the EU, but 'it makes the process much quicker and easier'. He considers maintaining the passenger information form is a 'safeguard' or 'reinforcement', since it allows contacts to be traced if an infected person has been on an airline. If the traveller has not been vaccinated, and has not had developed and Covid-19 antibodies rendering him or her immune, they must take either a PCR test or a fast-track antigen test – the cheaper option – within 48 hours of arrival, and be able to show the results which, of course, must be negative. Tests have to be paid for, but the actual cards are free of charge.

Noise can affect food choices The music you listen to at meal times can affect the type of food you eat. That's the finding of a new study from Aarhus University in Denmark, which compared food choices when people listened to different types of music. One group heard slow music, the other a fast, less harmonious composition played in a minor key, known to trigger emotions such as sadness or suspense. Writing in the journal Appetite, the researchers report the slowmusic group was more likely to pick healthier foods. Perhaps because the group wasn't distracted by, or experiencing, negative emotions from the music, they gave more consideration to better food choices. This is not the first time noise has been shown to affect what

we eat. In 2013 researchers at the University of Birmingham analysed 24 studies into the effects of distraction by noise and visual stimuli such as television and found that not only do we eat more food at a meal when we're distracted, we eat more at the next one, too. It's thought this is because when deciding what to eat at a meal, we subconsciously factor in consumption at the last one, too, balancing our intake. But if we're distracted, our recall of the last meal isn't so strong and our internal balancing system doesn't work as well. In fact, some experts say any music - or other disturbing noise such as the TV or conversation should be avoided at meal times, and suggest it is an effective tool for controlling food consumption.

Silent eating can also focus your attention on taste. But total silence may not work for all. It can be particularly difficult for people who use food to hide or distract them from their feelings. Sitting in silence may force them to dwell on these feelings. So if you do find it hard to sit in silence, try playing quiet background music as you eat, but make sure it has a slow beat. This is because your body tends to match the beat of the music and chewing slowly can give your body time to register satiety. If you don't want to spend your whole meal in silence, focus on just eating the first five bites of your meal without speaking but paying attention to everything about the food instead, recommend the experts. You could then progress to a silent meal a day or even a week.

I lost my wife last Spring. It was not easy for her daughters to fly over so I made the decision to have a private ceremony with just myself at the service. It's not what either of us would have wanted, but I was left with little option. This of course did not please her girls but I believe they could have made special arrangements to come to the funeral, however they kept on asking me to delay it another month because of Lockdown. Despite explaining to them that this could not happen, and it would be extremely costly, my wife's children have taken against me. The relationship was always strained because my wife left their father to make a new life with me. I said the best I could do was to hold a remembrance service for them when they were able to get over. I’ve heard nothing from them since. Now they are asking me to clear out their mother’s things and take the things of no worth to the charity shop, and send them things of value. My wife was not a poor woman, and although on one hand I see why her children would want personal mementos, I do not want to part with anything yet. They have even asked for her expensive wardrobe to be given over to them. Your longer letter tells me that they are due to inherit on your death, and that they are aware of this. You could write to them and say you are not yet ready to dispose of your wife’s personal belongings, however, this is something you may do in time and ask them to respect your wishes for the time being. These things are your property until you are ready to do something with them so you’ve no need to bow to pressure. WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. A PSEUDONYM WILL BE USED IF YOU WISH. SARA READS ALL LETTERS AND CAN GIVE A PERSONAL REPLY. EMAIL YOUR QUESTION TO SARA@COSTABLANCAPEOPLE.COM OR SARA IS AVAILABLE FOR PRIVATE CONSULTATIONS, TELEPHONE 650 054 467.

Tik Tok trend causes heart attack It seems every day there's a wacky if consumed in high quantities, as new challenge or craze gripping Ms Portillo unfortunately users on TikTok. discovered. Another trend has since been flagged as dangerous after a TikTok user claims to have ended up in hospital because she suffered a heart attack. Briatney Portillo, from Briatney Portillo Florida in the US, has warned She wrote: "When you do a dry people to learn from her mistake pre-workout scoop for the first and not to try everything they see time knowing you don't consume online after she gave 'dry caffeine regularly and end up in scooping' a go. hospital for a heart attack. Her chest pains later got worse while she was at work and her left arm began feeling numb - which was when she knew something was really wrong. Ms Portillo added: "I never thought something like this would ever happen to me. Especially because I’m so young." As well as the risk of a heart attack, the dry scooping trend is dangerous as it also poses risk of high blood pressure and choking. Some pre-workout powders can contain as much as 500mg of caffeine, which is around the same amount you'd find in five cups of coffee. Victoria Taylor, Heart Health Dietitian at the British Heart Foundation, said: "Pre-workout supplements often contain more caffeine per serving than a cup of coffee or energy drink, as well as other stimulants. "Some people are more sensitive to caffeine and can experience palpitations." Experts say drinking more than four cups of caffeine-rich drinks can increase your blood pressure. There could also be a risk of choking on the powder.

Insomnia sufferers are more likely to die sooner People who have trouble sleeping are at higher risk of dying than those without sleep problems, especially if they are diabetics, a new study suggests. Researchers examined data from around 500,000 middle-aged UK participants who were asked if they had trouble falling asleep or woke up in the middle of the night. They found that people with frequent sleep problems are at a higher risk of dying than those without sleep

problems. During the nine years of the research, the study found that people with type 2 diabetes were 87 percent more likely to die of any cause than people without diabetes or sleep disturbances. Additionally, results showed people with diabetes and sleep problems were 12 percent more likely to die over this period than those who had diabetes but not frequent sleep disturbances.

“Although we already knew that there is a strong link between poor sleep and poor health, this illustrates the problem starkly,” said first author Dr Malcolm von Schantz, professor of chronobiology from the University of Surrey. The question asked when the participants enrolled does not necessarily distinguish between insomnia and other sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea.

“Still, from a practical point of view it doesn't matter. Doctors should take sleep problems as seriously as other risk factors and work with their patients on reducing and mitigating their overall risk,” he added. The team says that to their knowledge, this is the first study to examine the effect of the combination of insomnia and diabetes on mortality risk. “Diabetes alone was associated with a

67 percent increased risk of mortality,' said senior co-author Dr Kristen Knutson of Northwestern University. “However, the mortality for participants with diabetes combined with frequent sleep problems was increased to 87 percent. In other words, it is particularly important for doctors treating people with diabetes to also investigate sleep disorders and consider treatments where appropriate.

Mosquitoes ‘hacked’ to fight Dengue fever Cases of Dengue fever have been cut by 77% thanks to a groundbreaking trial that used the very mosquitoes that spread the disease to combat it, said scientists this week. Scientests infected with mosquitoes with "miraculous" Wolbachia bacteria, reducing the insect's ability to spread dengue. The trial took place in Yogyakarta city, Indonesia, and is being expanded in the hope of eradicating the virus.

The World Mosquito Programme team says that this mosquito manipulation could be a solution to a virus that has gone around the world. Dengue wasn’t an issue 50 years ago, but in recent years it has increased dramatically with up to 400 million infections every year. Dengue is commonly known as "break-bone fever" because it causes severe pain in muscles and bones and explosive outbreaks can overwhelm hospitals.

On some 7,000 kilometres of the secondary road network in Spain, the maximum permitted speed limit is set at 90 kilometres per hour, on roads where no other restrictions are in force, in other words, where there are no signs indicating a stricter limit.

The maximum permitted speed on the secondary road network is 90 kilometres per hour, for cars, motorbikes, small motor homes and pick-ups, as well as buses (except under certain circumstances), derivatives of cars, and mixed adapted vehicles.

This is in effect the same concept as the commonly referred to “National Speed Limit” which is in place on British roads, where a maximum is automatically set on roads outside of towns.

In Spain, speed limits are dictated by three elements, the road, the vehicle, and the driver (in some cases). Therefore, some vehicles are still restricted further, such as trucks, vans, large motor homes, articulated vehicles, vehicles towing a

2020, the year of the pandemic, has been a negative year for road accidents, according to a study of the accident data carried out by the insurer LíneaDirecta in collaboration with INTRAS. Although last year the number of traffic accidents reached historical lows, 870 deaths (24-hour count), the insurer has calculated what this figure would have been from the point of view of normal mobility without restrictions. "In relative terms, the data is not so positive. In relation to mobility, 2020 has been the worst year of the decade in the field of road safety. If we take into account mobility and the evolution of accidents in Spain, in 2020, 128 more people have died than should have been registered," explains Mar Garre, general director of the LíneaDirecta Foundation. Fundación LíneaDirecta has carried out 1,700 surveys of drivers in which it

has detected that during the confinement at the beginning of this year (from March to June), speeding increased by 39% and that in 36% of accidents the victims were not wearing seat belts. Likewise, 20% of those surveyed admit to currently consuming more alcohol, drugs and medication and one in five considers themselves a worse driver after confinement. In addition, 60% are critical of the mobility restrictions that we have experienced in 2020 and 2021 and 24% acknowledge having skipped them on some occasion. 1,100 dead in 2021 Following the current trend, the study makes a forecast on the accident rate and calculates that we could reach the figure of 1,100 deaths on the roads in 2021. And it points out the causes that could lead to

National Speed Limit trailer, and others not listed, which are restricted to a maximum permitted speed of 80 kilometres per hour on these roads. Bicycles and mopeds are restricted to a maximum permitted speed of 45 kilometres per hour. Remember, we are talking only about the secondary road network, where no other restriction is in place, so if there is a sign saying that the maximum permitted speed is 80, or 50, for example, then that

is the case. Similar vehicular restrictions are also in place on motorways, as we can see from the table. It is important to know what classification your vehicle is, if it´s not so easy to identify such as is the case of cars or motorbikes, and you can find that information on your documentation. Some drivers are also restricted such as may be the case those suffering certain medical conditions, for which the doctor has determined a restriction is necessary.

this upswing in the accident rate. "The current situation is marked by tension and exhaustion. The relaxation in the use of the seat belt, the increase in speeding and the consumption of alcohol, drugs and medicines and the loss of skills due to inactivity during confinement can trigger the figures at 2019 levels, with the aggravation of being produced with 25% less mobility. We have relaxed, and driving is always a danger," says Mar Garre. With these forecasts, the study authors warn about the need to change the current trend in road accidents. "If we are not aware, 2021 will be worse because a general increase in mobility of 30% is expected, with 416 million longdistance trips, drivers will drive their car much more than before the pandemic and 71 % of those who travel in summer will do so by car".

Michael Harris, Anne Hernández, Debbie Williams and Sue Wilson have been named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List Michael Harris, Anne Hernández, Debbie Williams and Sue Wilson, who all run prominent citizens’ rights organisations in Spain, have been awarded MBEs for services to British Nationals in Spain and the European Union, in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List published on Friday 11 June 2021. Based in Madrid, Michael Harris is the founder and Vice President of EuroCitizens and a British in Europe committee member. A long-time resident of Spain, and a former teacher and writer of English-language textbooks, Michael founded the grassroots organisation EuroCitizens in September 2016. The group’s purpose was, and remains, to defend the rights of UK nationals in Spain and has particularly provided a forum for those of working age. Michael has worked consistently to keep citizens’ rights firmly in the public eye, both informing the UK community and lobbying the Spanish government to great effect. He has also created strong working relationships with UK Nationals’ groups across Europe and been an integral part of the British in Europe coalition. HMA Hugh Elliott said: “Mike has made an exceptional contribution in standing up for the rights of UK Nationals in Spain and his work to effectively lobby key political interlocutors in Spain and the EU on their behalf has been hugely impressive. I am also grateful for the way he has worked alongside the Embassy – providing just the right level of support and challenge! His work to defend their

rights has been invaluable to so many of the British community in Spain.” Michael Harris said: “I am pleasantly surprised to receive this MBE for my work with EuroCitizens and British in Europe, campaigning for the rights of Britons in Spain and the EU affected by Brexit.” Anne Hernández, a retired university lecturer, moved to Spain over 30 years ago. Based in Andalucía, Anne spearheaded the formation of Brexpats in Spain. As its President, Anne has worked tirelessly to inform UK nationals of their EU exit rights and responsibilities. She has championed key issues, supported UK nationals to access services, lobbied the Spanish local authorities for improvements, and supported the Embassy and Consulates to disseminate accurate information. HMA Hugh Elliott said: “Anne has given freely and selflessly of her time, actively and practically supporting UK nationals, the Embassy, and the Spanish authorities. As the driving force behind Brexpats in Spain, Anne has brought together a body of trusted experts to provide free and accurate information to members; ensuring UK nationals are aware of their rights and take the necessary actions to protect them. Her work has had an indisputably positive effect on the lives of so many UK nationals living in Spain.” Anne Hernández said: “I have never in my life refused help to anybody and, to think that just by offering that same kindness to my fellow Brits in Spain could result in this prestigious award, it is

honestly overwhelming. Steering one’s way through the maze of requirements and changes since Brexit hasn’t been easy for many and I am honoured that my help to them has been recognised in this way.” A former member of the armed forces, Debbie Williams, based in the Valencia region, set up the grass roots organisation Brexpats - Hear Our Voice (BHOV) as a pan-European group a few days after the EU Referendum in June 2016. Moving from Belgium to Spain shortly afterwards, she continued her lobbying, engagement and awarenessraising efforts, considering the impact of the UK’s departure from the EU on both UK Nationals in Europe and EU Nationals in the UK. She has made a huge contribution in raising awareness of the impact of the UK’s exit from the EU on the lives of UK nationals in Europe, not only as founder of Brexpats Hear Our Voice, but as a member of the British in Europe Steering Committee, and co-editor of the In Limbo Project. HMA Hugh Elliott said: “Debbie’s voluntary contribution has been outstanding – going beyond lobbying to provide a voice to citizens and to raise awareness of the impact the UK’s exit from the EU has had on the daily lives of individuals on both a practical and emotional level. Through Brexpats Hear Our Voice, Debbie has created a platform that ensures the voice of everyone who is affected by the EU referendum is heard, regardless of their nationality.” Debbie Williams said: “I was surprised

and humbled to hear that I merited this honour. I am grateful for the recognition, but none of this would have been possible without the assistance of so many other wonderfully dedicated campaigners who, for the last five challenging years, have been volunteering on behalf of so many people, especially the vulnerable.” As Chair of Bremain in Spain, Sue Wilson is one of the most visible campaigners for the rights of UK nationals in the EU. When moving to Spain to retire over 10 years ago, she had no experience of advocacy, campaigning work or speaking in public. However, the result of the 2016 EU referendum affected her deeply and since then she has worked on the issue of UK nationals’ rights in various different ways. Sue has lobbied UK and EU influencers and made great efforts to inform the UK Government’s work on citizens’ rights, including appearing in front of the Select Committee for Exiting the EU. She has multiplied the reach of key messages to thousands of UK nationals – writing articles in the press, actively participating on social media and appearing alongside British Embassy and Consular colleagues at outreach events. HMA Hugh Elliott said: “Sue has worked with great determination to raise the profile of citizens’ rights amongst politicians and key influencers. Her remarkable contribution and collaborative approach has helped the UK government minimise preventable consular cases by ensuring UK nationals

in the EU are reflected in the negotiations and that they have a clear understanding of their rights and how to access them. Her work has had a positive impact on the lives of thousands of UK nationals.” Sue Wilson said: "It has been a great pleasure working with Ambassador Hugh Elliott and his Embassy staff in Madrid, helping British citizens navigate the post-Brexit landscape. It has been a labour of love - a tough one at times - but to have that work recognised and appreciated is a wonderful and unexpected surprise. I'm absolutely delighted!" The four UK nationals named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List are: • An MBE to Michael HARRIS, Vice President, EuroCitizens. ‘For services to British Nationals in Spain and the European Union’. • An MBE to Anne Patricia Dawn HERNÁNDEZ, President, Brexpats in Spain. ‘For services to British Nationals in Spain’. • An MBE to Debbie WILLIAMS, Founder, Brexpats Hear Our Voice. ‘For services to British Nationals in the European Union’. • An MBE to Sue WILSON, Chair, Bremain in Spain. ‘For services to British Nationals in Spain and the European Union’.

Abbey Anglers On Tuesday the 8th of June we fished the El Bosquet complex at Crevillent. It looks like summer has finally arrived and the match was fished in temperatures approaching 26 degrees with a light breeze. Fourteen anglers took part and the winner at the venue as usual was Neil McBernie. He fished peg 6 and as I was not fishing the match I took some time to sit and watch him fishing. He mainly fished just off the far bank with maggot, at the same time he was constantly feeding at least two other lines by hand and with a catapult. Neil weighed in a fantastic weight of 58.260kg. In second place was Doug Hornblow with 20.260kg. The former Welsh International team captain was drawn on pegs 26 to 40 and unusually for him fished the feeder the entire match to take some quality carp. In third place was Mick “the gooner” Hill who fared slightly better than his beloved football team. He fished the pole to take carp and barbel for 15.260kg. The pairs competition was won by Neil and Terry Screen with the highest weight we have ever had in the pairs of 73.140kg. Rods N Reels The following day we again fished the same complex, the same pegs and inevitably the result was the same. The match was won by Neil McBernie. He used exactly the same tactics with maggots, using in excess of a litre of loose fed maggots . Drawn on peg 2 this time he weighed in another great weight of 45.86kg. On this occasion he also caught several big carp close in, in the margins. In Second place was the paste master

himself,Terence James Brindley. Drawn on peg 5 he fished maggots, only joking he fished paste to take lots of decent carp for 27.78kg. In third place was mysel , Ian Brown. I was drawn on peg 26 and struggled for the first 3 hours of the match mainly due to a Spanish family that were fishing across from me on peg 15 and 16. Four people were fishing these two pegs including a young boy and the noise was excessive to say the least. Soon after they had gone I fished pellet up in the water right across to take carp after carp. I eventually weighed 21.80kg. Other section winners were Doug Hornblow peg 39 with 11.10kg and Bob Rafferty with 12.44kg from peg 36. Bob is the oldest member of our club well into his eighties but still enjoys match fishing and it was good to see him amongst the prizes. The pairs completion was won by Neil and Barry Homer. TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

So, in Gareth in we trust, right? It didn’t look quite like that after England’s starting XI was leaked online early Sunday morning. Kieran Trippier at left-back? But you have two actual left-backs in the squad, Gareth. Kalvin Phillips and Declan Rice? Bit negative, no? RAHEEM STERLING? Have you seen him play this season, coz nobody else has! Tyrone Mings? May as well play an injured Harry Maguire. It was nice to see England maintain their tournament traditions of picking unfit key players, placing others out of position, and weirdly leaving players believed to be on form players on the bench, or - in the case of Jadon Sancho - not even in the squad. But, as the full-time whistle went, Southgate would have been well within his rights to give himself a little pat on the back - every single big call he made came off and some. Kalvin Phillips, England’s man-of-the-match, he who was a defensive choice, went past two and set up Sterling for the only goal of the game. Mings, dodgier than a dodgy kebab in the two warm-up matches, was a rock alongside Stones. And Trippier, a La Liga winner this season do not forget, added that experience and consistency on the outside of Mings that made a lot of sense when you got over the fact that Chilwell had just won the Champions League. One concern could be the skipper if you are taking a moment to be a little critical. Harry Kane looking around aimlessly to find someone to give the armband to summed up his day. For Sterling, it was his first goal in a tournament finals for England in a day unwanted records tumbled - Jude Bellingham also became the youngest player ever in the tournament (that one, not so unwanted). Granted, minimal competition, but this was easily England’s best opening day performance since France in 1982 though, even with injury-time starting,

did anyone truly believe they’d see it home given that England had never won their opening game at a European Championship and had thrown away a lead in 1980, and 1996, and 2000, and 2004, and 2012, and 2016. Was it perfect? No. Does that matter? No. Is it coming home? Let’s address that question next week, shall we? For a column that is 100% based around mocking the football circus and poking the finger of fun at anything that moved, you’ll understand why the Christian Eriksen incident/collapse/near-tragedy (I mean, what on Earth do you call it?) is

Wales will be grateful Kiefer Moore headed home their equaliser otherwise their “hit the big man” tactics would have been questioned. Nice to see Gareth Bale seems to have retired from football before the tournament.

What about the transfer stuff? Well, Ben White (now in the England squad for the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold) is now, as a direct result, firmly on Arsenal and United’s radar. Daniel Levy wants a cash-only deal on Kane, but that price might have dropped about £50m this weekend.

Maurizio Sarri has taken over at Lazio and in true “who used to play for me that I might be able to sign” fashion, fancies a bit of Ruben Loftus-Cheek. You thought I was going to say Jorginho, admit it. The whole manager merry-go-round still hasn’t stopped turning.

not going to get much airtime here other than to say, what an amazing job by the medical team and those around them to save his life. It goes without saying, a full recovery is wished for and that everyone affected gets the support that they need. Belgium looked a bit good - or did Russia look a bit bad? Either way, Romelu Lukaku took his Serie A form into the game and unless you are Belgian, let’s all hope he’s peaked a bit too early. Those of you foolish enough to have followed this shambles for some time now will not be surprised to learn I tipped Turkey to be the dark horses of this tournament and go further than many expected. I did not say they

A Week Of Two Firsts!

Joyce’s run of form continued and with 42 points she must have felt she’d done enough to take this year’s President’s Day trophy on Wednesday. However, it was John Shervell (scoring 9 less than his handicap!) with a massive 45 points who won the title. 41 points saw Tom Hardie take bronze which in most societies would be a winning score. Nearest the pins went to FriedelKnebel, Ron Luffman and

Italy looked decent, moving the ball well and stepping it up to do the pretty important task of scoring goals in the second half. Another team that must have peaked far too soon - you’re supposed to grow into these tournaments, right?

watch over the weekend was the most entertaining. The Dutch are back after a nine-year absence and have Frank de Boer in charge - not something that would inspire confidence that the Netherlands could win this thing. Having thrown a two-goal lead down the toilet to the Ukraine, Denzel Dumfries - easily my favourite player name in today’s column - scored the later winner.

Donny van de Beek’s amazing year continues - the United midfielder injured and out of Euro 2020. Next, he’ll be sold to Arsenal or something. Maybe to replace Xhaka who is off to be Jose’s new Nemanja Matic in Roma.

Las Ramblas Golf Society Results for w/c 7.6.21

Joyce McClusky and Paul Brown took Monday’s 2 ball better ball with a resounding 49 points. Close, but not close enough, with 46 points it was myself and Ron Phipps just edging out Nigel Price and Mike Mahony on countback. This was despite Nigel scoring his first ever Eagle on the second!

would win it - and I apologise to anyone from Turkey reading this for pretty much guaranteeing that they are going home in the group stages.

Graham Murray. For the ladies Olga Douglas was nearest the pin in two on the 5th and for the men it was Mark Western closest in 3 on the par five 18th. Friday’s 6x6x6 was won with 86 points by Andy Martin, Yvonne Phipps and a somewhat hungover John Drakesmith (Perhaps that’s the answer)? Overshadowing them, huge congratulations go out to Nora Betts who recorded her first ever hole in one on the difficult 12th hole. Thanks for the beers Pat and Nora! Finally; what word becomes shorter when you add two letters to it? Short. Pues hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell

On the day Bellingham became the youngest player, Goran Pandev netted one for those of us that are old enough to have had a legal pint during Euro 96. Pandev scored North Macedonia’s firstever goal in a major finals after absolutely broke Real Madrid’s new £500k a week defender David Alaba collided with his somewhat foolish goalkeeper. Alaba did make up for it though, setting up the goal which means Austria have won their first-ever match at the Euros. It’s almost as if this is a massively extended tournament or something. Marko Arnautovic looks like he’s chilled out a bit since leaving West Ham, as well. Naturally, the Euros match I did not

Nuno was going to Palace but then some last-minute demands meant that’s not happening. That meant Everton picked up the phone, but whatever the ex-Wolves manager said led to Everton then being linked to Rudi Garcia, Rafa Benitez and Fatih Terim in the preceding 24 hours. Spurs are on the verge of doing the ultimate retro 90s Spurs thing possible by appointing Paulo Fonseca. Fonseca is the sacked Roma coach, the man Roma got rid of because they thought they could get Mourinho. I know, I know. And Levy hopes to keep Kane, what can I say? The ESL 6 have all been fined £20m for their part in that mockery to football. Hang on, sorry - they were fined £20m between them which is, frankly, as daft as Chris Smalling seeing UFOs.
