Ambassador reflects on Armed Forces Day

HMA Hugh Elliott reflects on Armed Forces Day and the Royal British Legion centenary

“Most of you will know me as British Ambassador to Spain, but like many of us i wear and have worn a variety of other hats. i’m a husband and a

father. i have served as trustee of the British Spanish Society and Chair of Canning house, the uK’s centre for latin America and iberia; i am Patron of the British Benevolent Fund and an active supporter of Multiple Sclerosis charities. i also keep up the struggle against the impact of the gastronomic wonders of Spain through being a mediocre hockey and squash player. however, one of the roles i am most proud to fulfil is that of Patron of the Royal British legion in Spain. And as we celebrate not only Armed Forces day, but the centenary of the legion, i wanted to reflect a little on what it means to me and why its work is so important to uK nationals in Spain. on Saturday i was honoured to attend an event in orihuela, alongside serving

officers, veterans, families, reservists and volunteers, to mark this double commemoration. Just four weeks ago, i was lucky enough to be able to visit hMS Kent, while she made a port visit to Alicante – a visible demonstration of the close cooperation between the British Armed Forces and our Allies. it was international collaboration brought to life: we had a British frigate, working as part of a nAto task group, under the command of a Spanish admiral, contributing to europe’s regional security. the ship’s captain had nothing

but praise for the welcome he and his crew had received in Alicante, which is a glowing testament to our countries’ continued cooperation on defence and security. in historical terms we are in a particularly good place, as not all of the previous hMS Kents (and there have been eleven since 1652) enjoyed the same relationship with the Armada! the work of the legion is likewise both longstanding and bilateral. over the last 100 years, it has fought to improve the lifelong care and support to serving and ex-serving personnel and their families, but its achievements are wider than many appreciate, both as champion of the Armed Forces and its contribution to wider society. it works very closely alongside Spanish charities such as Cruz Roja and makes every effort to relieve pressure on the Spanish support services where they can. And speaking at the anniversary event, the mayor of orihuela, emilio Bascuñana Galiano, could not have been more welcoming or supportive.

Continued from page 1 to many of us, the legion is only visible during the Poppy Appeal, but as i was able to hear in person from don Cubbon, district north Chair, and many others in orihuela, it provides year-round support, which goes largely unseen. two years ago, the branches around Alicante and Murcia provided invaluable financial and practical assistance to those who were victims of the devastating floods. over the last 18 months, the fundraising climate and CoVid restrictions have made the

work of the Community Support team incredibly tough, but the legion’s dedicated volunteers have found ways to deliver much-needed support to its beneficiaries in Spain, despite the difficult circumstances. the legion is an essential partner to our consulates – sharing our Brexit and travel advice, providing financial assistance to welfare cases and supporting British prisoners with visits. the emotional, practical and financial support it has provided to vulnerable uK nationals in incredibly complicated

Three officers injured in Pilar pub arrest A man was arrested in Pilar de la horadada at the weekend after attacking three police officers, injuring himself and causing damage to a nearby vehicle. the altercation took place on Saturday night at a premises in the town. the detainee attacked and spat blood at one of the officers and bit another police officer. officers had been called to the scene when the man was

leaving an establishment on Saturday night and became violent. he had broken part of a parked car and began to injure himself with a nearby metal door. the officers arrived and tried to calm the situation but unprovoked, the suspect is alleged to have attacked them. the police then went to arrest the man but he continued to scratch, kick, and spit at the police as well as biting one of the officers.

and challenging circumstances has been truly invaluable. it is not an overstatement to say that some individuals would not have made it through without it. that is why the work of the Royal British legion in Spain matters and why, as we mark this important moment in its history, i look forward, come november, to wearing my poppy with pride; safe in the knowledge that – whatever the challenges of the future – the legion will continue to serve our communities here in Spain for the next 100 years and beyond.”

Torrevieja claims to have the safest beaches in Spain for the second year running For the second consecutive year, torrevieja claims it boasts the safest beaches in Spain with a state of the art information and control system in place along beaches and coastal walkways. Around 275 people will this summer be responsible for the safety of the beaches of torrevieja including controllers, informers, riders, guards and lifeguards. the mayor of torrevieja, eduardo dolón, alongside councillor for Antonio Vidal, visited the natural swimming pools on Juan Aparicio promenade to officially launch the Access Management and Control Service. the service was first instigated last year due to CoVid-19 and it was decided earlier this year to extend the service into Summer 2021 with the incorporation of additional information and control services in areas and times of greatest influx of passers-by. Along with the mayor and the beach councilor, the manager of Recreativos Acuáticos horadada, Víctor José González, was also present. the company was awarded the contract for sunbeds and recreational games

on the beaches of torrevieja. Also present was José Areste, manager of BRÓColi, the company with the contract for beach security and cleaning. the company, founded only last year in the midst of security measures imposed by the

Spanish government, has quickly become one of the most successful on the entire Mediterranean coast, offering a comprehensive service to control beach capacity and safety, as well as cleaning and disinfection of public toilets and footbaths. A €1.2m contract was awarded to BRÓColi which creates 194 jobs, including 40 posts in the new boardwalk control service, 120 beach controllers, 10 cleaners and more. the service, which began

on Friday, will continue until the end of September. the mayor of torrevieja pointed out that in addition to these 194 people, there are 31 beach controllers, all of whom are under 30 years of age and part of a working scheme subsidized by the Generalitat Valenciana over the next three months, as well as the 50 lifeguards and beaches surveillance workers. in total, 275 people will be working for the safety of torrevieja’s beaches to make them the safest in Spain. At the launch, the mayor eduardo dolón also revealed that there are accessible areas such as ramps to access the beaches and bathing areas for people with reduced mobility, thus providing a higher quality of service on the beaches of torrevieja as well as sunbed services, recreational games and beach bars. improved toilet facilities have also been installed with toilets for all (whether they are clients of the beach bar or not), as well as pergolas for people with reduced mobility equipped with hoist showers with amphibious chairs.

New mask wearing rules Masks ceased to be compulsory on Saturday – 26th June - outdoors, but there are exceptions apply and national health authorities have attempted to clarify a number of queries that have arisen from the general public since the move was announced. it is still a legal requirement to wear a mask in a range of situations, so it is strongly recommended that everyone has one available to put on if they need to. Although they are not technically required just for walking down the street, they must be worn even in open-air spaces where it is impossible, or difficult, to keep a minimum distance of 1.5 metres between people, except where these people are members of the same household. this means fines can still be handed out for those not wearing masks in, for example, crowded shopping streets

or when gathering in groups outdoors in public. And fines continue to apply for not wearing a mask in indoor spaces, other than private homes. Minister Carolina darías says the new mask rules are a ‘tremendously important’ decision, taken because ‘all indications show improvement’ and the vaccine roll-out is ‘moving at a very swift pace indeed’.

this, she says, allows the government to ‘introduce a certain level of flexibility’, albeit ‘cautiously’, and always founded on ‘scientific evidence’, based upon the fact that viral transmission through the air, or contagion, is much lower than in enclosed spaces.

Balearics go green, but not rest of Spain the Balearic islands are being moved to the uK government’s green list of countries and territories, which are considered safe for travel. According to the government website, the Spanish archipelago will move to the green watch-list at 4am, tomorrow - Wednesday 30th June. this means that travellers will not have to quarantine for 10 days upon arrival in the uK, although they will still need to take a Covid-19 test on or before day two (and quarantine if the result is positive). A test is also required before travel. the Balearics, which include the popular islands of Mallorca, Menorca, ibiza and Formentera, have traditionally been an important destination for British tourists. in 2019, nearly four million of them spent

time in the Mediterranean archipelago, mostly in Mallorca. the rest of Spain will remain on the amber list, where the uK government tells its citizens they should not travel. Passengers arriving from amber list countries must quarantine at home or in the place they are staying for 10 days, and additionally take a Covid-19 test on or before day two and on or after day eight. A test is also required before travel. the list gets reviewed every three weeks. Although the uK government considered the possibility of leaving fully vaccinated people out of the quarantine rule, this step has not been taken yet. the World travel and tourism Council, an industry group, has written an open letter to the Boris Johnson administration

warning that “the uK will lose a staggering £639 million (€740 million) a day during July if international travel remains off limits.” Meanwhile, German chancellor Angela Merkel, backed by French President emmanuel Macron, is leading an initiative to make eu countries introduce quarantines for uK travellers upon arrival, as is already the case for British passengers arriving in Germany. this would be a complicated decision for countries like Spain, Portugal, Greece and italy, which rely more heavily on British tourism. Spain was one of the first european countries to announce that it would no longer require a PCR test from passengers arriving from Britain.

“Masks are going to give way to smiles,” the health minister says.

Clearing and cleaning the streets in Orihuela Costa

Work underway

the department of infrastructures of the orihuela City Council has been informed of the reinforcement, through AdiS, for the cleaning and clearing of the streets of orihuela Costa. Ángel noguera, Councillor for infrastructure, has indicated that “due to the continuous rains so far this year there has been a greater presence of weeds in the roads of orihuela Costa, so it has been decided to reinforce this service responding to the demands of coastal residents”. Work has already started, clearing sidewalks and tree pits in la Zenia. these works will continue through teams of the unemployed who will begin shortly and continue with these clearing tasks both in orihuela Costa and in the rest of the municipality of orihuela for three months.

BUYING A HOLIDAY HOME Rebecca Serwotka Rebecca Serwotka - Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today! Featured on Best Buy Spain - Property TV.

Purchasing a holiday home should be an exciting time! you’ve worked hard saving up for this investment. or maybe you’re honoring a loved one and are buying a property with your inheritance. either way, there will be a few things you need to consider.

Access to a swimming pool is usually a “must have” on any holiday makers wish list, especially if you’re wanting to benefit from renting during the spring and summer months, i.e. short term rentals. however if you prefer to cater to a long term rental, then swimming pools are not so important.

2. Keeping it for your own use? What time of year will you be intending on using it?

if you have no intention of renting your property out, deciding on an area is also a factor to take into consideration for yourself. if you are planning on using the property at all times throughout the year, you need to be in an area that remains open. Being closer to the beach means you’ll be the only people around in the winter months. Whereas being in a residential area, means you’ll always have amenities open, no matter when you choose to visit.

if you’re hoping to use your investment as an income, i.e. renting it out, how many people are you wanting to cater for? if you were to purchase a two bedroomed property, you can accommodate up to 6 people by using a sofa bed too!

For information on the buying process in the Costa Blanca, head to www. BuyMyHomeInSpain.com to download a complimentary “Spanish Property Buying Guide for 2021”.

Before you start your property search, have a clear vision of what you want in a holiday home. For example: 1. Will you be wanting to rent the property out? if so, short term or long term?

GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP Sterling’s big event this week as the Bank of england’s Monetary Policy Committee meeting, which was the last one attended by Chief economist Andy haldane. the result was a dovish statement from the Boe, where haldane argued that the Bank should remove £50bn off its £895bn money printing programme. he was a lone voice in the MPC to tighten monetary policy though, and while investors had no reason to expect any different outcome, they feigned disappointment and sent sterling lower. its average loss of 0.3% to the ten most activelytraded currencies was entirely the result of a bad day on thursday after said meeting. What else happened this week to steer the pound? Well, Rightmove’s index revealed the “biggest seasonal rise since 2015” for uK house prices. the provisional purchasing managers’ indices delivered a full set of two-month lows, not as disappointing as that might sound since they were all comfortably above 60. Public sector borrowing was no higher than could reasonably have been expected, with the onS confirming it remains elevated. Another obvious problem for sterling was the uK retail sales data for May. instead of the forecast 1.6% monthly increase, sales fell 1.4%. even the 24.6% year-on-year increase was a disappointment; a 29% rise had been expected. the biggest hit came from a 5.7% fall in food sales, supposedly because “people returned to eating and drinking at locations such as restaurants and bars”.

EURO having bounced dramatically as lockdowns were lifted around the world, it should perhaps not come as a surprise that purchasing managers’ indices have not continued ever higher into the stratosphere. they are after all limited to a 0 – 100 range and the bell curve peaks at 50. nevertheless, analysts’ optimism for the most recent readings was overdone in some cases, but the eurozone however, was not one of those cases. the composite provisional PMi reached a 15year high of 59.2, helped by a 10-year high from Germany. it might seem churlish to describe an 11-month high from France as a disappointment but analysts had predicted an even better result. Although the provisional PMis from euroland were not as high as the uK numbers, they were more impressive to investors. in other data news consumer confidence improved to an almost three-year high. Business confidence in Germany delivered a similarly positive result. italian industrial sales were strong in April and eurozone consumer confidence rose to a two-and-a-half-year high. european Central Bank President Christine lagarde used a speech to remind investors that the bank is sticking to the conventional major central bank line. She spoke about the economic outlook “brightening”, with a “vigorous bounce-back of services activity” and “robust” manufacturing production. however, “tightening [monetary policy] would be premature and would pose a risk to the ongoing economic recovery”. the euro is little-changed on the week, flat against sterling and a fifth of a cent higher against the uS dollar.

National Police intercept narco boat with 6 tons on board Spain’s national police have intercepted a drugs sailboat, loaded with six tons of hashish. the boat was in international waters of the Mediterranean and three Bulgarian nationals on board were arrested. An investigation began when the uK’s national Crime agency detected a powerful Bulgarian criminal organisation that was thought to acquire high class sailboats in turkey in order to transport hashish and cocaine into europe. in May, police became aware that the gang had acquired two new boats and that they planned to carry out a series of modifications to increase the power of the boats’ engines. investigators learned that days after the modifications had been made, one of the boats left the turkish port of Fethiye and was later located

off the coast of Alicante where it had run out of fuel. two other gang members flew to Alicante and used another smaller boat to transport fuel to the large boat. the boat resumed its journey until eventually, authorities

intercepted and boarded the vessel near the italian island of Sardinia. three arrests were made but the operation is still underway and several other vessels believed to be used by the gang are currently under observation.

Scaremongering! By Sam Kelly dipPFS, eFA, BA (hons) Managing Partner Chorus Financial

Without fail, every time there’s a new piece of legislation or an update that may affect Brits living in Spain, certain financial advisory companies will shape it into something to encourage you to send your hard-earned money to them! We saw this very obviously with the Modelo 720 in Spain, where financial advisers, left right and centre, would use our lack of familiarity with this simple form to encourage you all to move your monies into ‘compliant investments’. now, compliant investments in themselves, for example ‘Spanish Compliant investment Bonds’ can be very useful products for those looking to invest, but moving monies into them that you didn’t intend to invest, simply to avoid completing a simple asset declaration, may not be the best advice.

We then saw my industry having a field day with Brexit! over the last few years there’s been a rush to try to encourage people to move their money into trusts, QRoPs, all sorts of exotic (and often expensive) arrangementsbasically anything outside the uK. As if the uK would suddenly prevent those living in the eu from having a pension or some savings! there are Brits living all over the world who still have uK based pensions, bank accounts, savings etc. the idea that those of us living in the eu will suddenly lose access to ours is simply not true. the latest trend is back to good old QRoPs! QRoPs, which are overseas pensions recognised by hMRC, are an effective pension vehicle for certain clients. For example, if you are approaching your pensions lifetime Allowance (currently £1,073,100) then Chorus may well recommend a QRoPs because this may offer significant benefits. however, for most of you, a uK SiPP designed for Brits living overseas should likely provide you with everything you need. you can enjoy a well-regulated and flexible pension product without the need for a QRoPs. Chorus clients would

generally pay around £500 per year more for a QRoPs than a uK SiPP, so we must ensure this additional cost is justified. With other firms in Spain, we’ve seen clients pay over 6% in layered(andpossibly hidden) fees on their QRoPs, which is why we always urge caution before moving your pensions to such arrangements. So, right on cue, i’m seeing adverts scaremongering people to move their pensions out of the uK on the basis that uK based pensions ‘may’ be exposed to Wealth tax… one day… possibly… in our post-Brexit world! let’s be clear here, there is a small risk of this, but would you really consider a significant financial decision based on something that is very unlikely to happen? Beyond that, do we really believe that Spain, a country that has been embracing Brits for decades, that has employed thousands of people to help Brits with their residencias etc, would introduce such damming and illogical legislation against an essential group to Spain’s economy? Come to think of it… i suspect many of you may think they would! But let me reassure you, Spain has never demonstrated any negative bias to us Brits here and i cannot imagine them being motivated to do so in the future.

let’s be practical here, if such legislation were ever confirmed, then clearly Chorus would assess those of our clients potentially affected and take the appropriate action. if that meant moving our uK SiPP clients to QRoPs, then we would work with those clients to find the best, lowest price solution, ensuring no client is left out of pocket. We would certainly not be moving them to a QRoPs layered with unnecessary fees, product tie-ins, hidden commissions etc. Financial advice should always be appropriate and client focussed, not a ‘one-solution-fits-all’ approach where every client is encouraged to go into the same products, the same funds, possibly even an unnecessary trust. our industry should focus on low cost, transparent, high quality advice and ensure each client has their individual needs considered. if you want to seek a second opinion on your savings, pensions and investments from a company who guarantee no unnecessary or hidden fees, and a 100% ethical and client-focussed approach, then contact me direct today on s.kelly@ chorusfinancial.es, +34 664 398 702 or visit www.chorusfinancial.es for more information.

Traps laid for processionary caterpillars the butterflies of the processionary pine caterpillar are about to emerge from their chrysalis and so now is the perfect time to stop the dangerous, and sometimes fatal, pest from spreading across the municipality. therefore the department of the environment for orihuela this week has placed 25 biological pheromone traps to attract the males of the species in different pine forests across the municipality. the traps have been placed in strategic areas where a greater number of caterpillar incidents were detected in January and February. By capturing the males, the probability of breeding is minimal and so are future infestations. this biological control method does not use harmful chemicals and will be operational between June and September. the traps will be reviewed periodically to count the number of males captured. From the results obtained, a graph with the curve of the species will indicate the most appropriate moment to start phytosanitary treatments in autumn. last december, the treatment against the pine processionary caterpillar was carried out throughout the municipality by spraying a biological product. the pine processionary produces two types of damage: it attacks the trees causing the defoliation of the pines and a decrease in their growth, it manages to weaken them and makes them prone to attack by other pests, even drying out. Secondly, they cause stinging and breathing difficulties in people and animals, causing irritation to the skin, eyes and nose, sometimes causing severe allergic reactions, which

Young unemployed help on the beaches the orihuela Councillor for employment Promotion, Víctor Valverde, has welcomed 24 unemployed young people from the municipality who will carry out information and support tasks on the beaches of orihuela Costa this summer. the event was also attended by the deputy Mayor, José Aix and the councillors for human Resources, luisa Boné and tourism, Mariola Rocamora. the scheme was carried out through the Auxiliares de Playas employment program and is aimed at young people over 18 years of age and under 30. Councillor Valverde explained: “We have received a grant of 107,000 euros, to which 51,000 euros more than the funds of the council. these young people will serve for three months, in different work shifts, from Monday to Sunday. they will receive an online training course where they will learn tourism or essential lifeguard support. in addition, we have guided them on

New municipal vehicles for Orihuela the orihuela City Council has acquired seven vehicles for the areas of Road Cleaning, emergencies and local Police, departments that all provide essential services. the vehicles were needed due to the progressive deterioration that existing ones have suffered either due to the age of the vehicles, due to being exposed to arduous situations such as the dAnA in September 2019 or the current CoVid-19 pandemic. Article 6 of Rd law 23/2020, which approved the measures in the field of energy and economic reactivation, allowed local governments to allocate up to 7 percent of the positive balance remaining of the 2019 fiscal year to finance investment expenses in vehicles with a Zero or eco label. to this end, the government team carried out a full proposal at the end of 2020 to qualify 283,745 euros to tender the acquisition through a supply contract of three hybrid 4x4 off-road vehicles, two 100 percent electric 5-seater vans and another two of 3 and 9 hybrid seaters. the delivery time of the vehicles is between 1 and 2 months. At the last governing board, lots 1 and 2 were awarded, leaving lot 3 for the next few weeks. the expected savings on the tender are around 19,000 euros. the Councillor responsible for the Municipal Fleet, José Galiano, said: “With these acquisitions we complete the agreements in full and comply with the tenders. in addition, we improve the fleet so that workers have greater safety when they are providing these essential services for the community. All this coupled with caring for the environment since these vehicles are all labelled as Zero and eco.”

Quarantine rule change Tax drop on electric for the fully vaccinated the Spanish health Ministry has announced that people who are fully vaccinated against Covid-19 will no longer have to quarantine if they come into contact with a positive case. this decision was reached by Spain’s Public health Commission, which brings together the health Ministry and representatives from the region. “People who are fully vaccinated and considered a close contact [of a positive case] will generally be exempt from the quarantine rule,” the health Ministry explained in a press release. A close contact is defined by the health Ministry as anyone who has been in the same place as a positive case, at a distance of fewer than two meters, for a cumulative sum of more than 15 minutes in 24 hours. under the previous rules, anyone who met this definition needed to selfisolate for 10 days – regardless of whether they had been immunized. People who have full protection against Covid-19 will, however, be required to take two PCR tests – one at the beginning and another seven days after the last contact with the coronavirus case.

People who are fully vaccinated have a very low risk of developing a serious case of Covid-19, but they can still spread the virus, even if they show no symptoms. Studies in the united Kingdom, however, suggest that they have a lower capacity to transmit the coronavirus than people who have not been immunised. the health Ministry recommended that those with full protection who have come into contact with a positive case not attend crowded events, wear a face mask during social interactions and avoid “vulnerable and unvaccinated people.” A person is considered to have full protection against Covid-19 if they have received two shots of the Pfizer-Biontech, Moderna or oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine,

or a single dose of the one-shot Janssen vaccine. People who have recently recovered from the virus and then received one dose of the Pfizer, Moderna or AstraZeneca vaccine are also considered to have full protection. A total of 14,745,736 people in Spain have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19, according to the latest data from the Spanish health Ministry. the government aimed to have 15 million people with full protection by June 20, but fell short of this target by more than 500,000. the situation was blamed on delivery setbacks with Janssen and AstraZeneca, even though Spain has nearly three million doses in storage. the decision from the Public health Commission comes as the incidence rate in Spain continues to fall.

I work for a small English business, and have been there just over twelve months. The owner is pleased with me and my work, but the manager is very difficult to deal with, and picks on me. He tells me daily that I was lucky to keep my job in the pandemic. There are others who work here too, and they have also complained to me that he can be like that. But he seems to pick on me more. He tells me he has the ability to fire me if he wants to, and that he could replace me ‘like that’. Recently I took a day off holiday that had been booked with the owner and the book keeper months ago. When I got back in to work the next day, the manager went ballistic and told me I had no right to take a day off, and that he had not been informed of it. I feel I am being victimised. I need my job and he knows this. I am very unhappy working here, but I cannot leave. There are simply no jobs out there at the moment. If you haven’t spoken to the owner yet, then do so. Also tell the person who keeps the books because as you were required to put in a holiday request with the book keeper, it may be they also have duties which involve administration and welfare of the staff. Please don’t let this person bully you. If you know the owner is pleased with you and the work you do, then the manager should have no problems with you. Speak to the owner without telling this manager first. You don’t have to speak to the manager about this problem, it is the owners responsibility to sort out any problems between you.

electricity bills will be charged a value-added tax (iVA) at 10 percent rather than 21 percent. the change came into effect from thursday 24th June as a temporary measure to keep bills down – although government coalition partners unidas Podemos is pushing to make it permanent. For the moment, 10 percent iVA will apply instead of 21 percent until the end of this year, and only when the price of wholesale energy exceeds €45 per megawatt per hour (mWh). the move comes after soaring power prices led the ministry of energy and environmental transition, run by socialist and deputy president teresa Ribera, and the ministry of social rights, led by unidas Podemos’ ione Belarra, to take urgent action to stop bills going through the roof. it will apply to customers who have contracted a power level of up to 10 kilowatts (kW). Although iVA will go back to 21 percent where energy prices drop below €45 per mWh, it will stay at 10 percent for consumers considered ‘severely vulnerable’. in all cases, though, it will only be until the end of 2021. Also, tax on value of electrical energy production, currently 7 percent and payable by utility companies but passed onto the customer, will be temporarily

axed – a move teresa Ribera made for a short time in 2018 as damage limitation when power prices rocketed – and this time, it will only be waived for the third quarter of this year, from July to September inclusive. unidas Podemos is calling for the iVA reduction to 10 percent to be permanent for all households with a power level of 6kW contracted and all

businesses with up to 15kW. the left-wing party insists that this would help improve cashflow and income for small and medium-sized businesses, allowing them to grow and potentially improving job opportunities. iVA adjustments should not be subject to market price fluctuations, unidas Podemos says, as this would involve ‘frequent reviews’ that would ‘make the system far more

complex’. the impact of an iVA reduction will cost the State around €3 billion a year, but unidas Podemos says this can be compensated for by limiting what has become known as ‘benefits that fall out of the sky’ straight away, rather than in a few months’ time as originally planned. these ‘benefits’ are where utility companies pass onto the customer the charge they would have to pay as a penalty for carbon dioxide emissions they produce, and which can be a way of electricity boards increasing their profits: Making this a standard charge and integral part of the fixed element of energy bills even where their electricity production does not generate Co2 emissions. this is the case with nuclear and hydroelectric plants – no emissions are created which the utility board has to pay a penalty for, but the amount of this penalty is still passed onto the end consumer. the State gets 90 percent of the Co2 emissions penalty charges, every quarter, and spends 90 percent of this figure on financing the transition to renewable energy production, then the remaining 10 percent helps fund bill reductions or payments for low-income households.

Ab Fab wouldn’t be made today, says Jennifer Saunders Jennifer Saunders thinks ‘Absolutely Fabulous’ wouldn’t be made today due to cancel culture. The 62-year-old comedian - who wrote and starred in the hit 1990s sitcom - has claimed the show would never have made it to TV screens in case it offended viewers. Speaking at an event at the Garrick Theatre, she said: “What p****s me off? Quite a lot of stuff actually. I get annoyed by people and gentle criticism all the time. This is a modern thing, isn’t it? If someone says something it always has to be, ‘Oh, but sorry, you can’t say that’. I say, ‘Oh f*** off’. “It’s not a crime to have an opinion or say something. It is always petty and small-

mindedness that p*** me off bigotry and small-mindedness.” Jennifer played boozy PR guru Edina Monsoon opposite Joanna Lumley’s fellow hellraiser Patsy Stone from 1994 to 2004 but she believes the pair would have talked themselves out of cracking certain jokes as people are too “sensitive”. She explained: “I think it has changed comedy like what we used to make. I think we would probably talk ourselves out of most of it now. It would be like, ‘We won’t have a good answer so let’s not do that’. “I think people do talk themselves out of stuff now because everything is sensitive. It stops a lot of the fun, maybe, like jokes. I remember jokes. Silly

jokes.” However, the comedy legend says she faced far worse in the 80s when she received sexist comments whilst onstage with Dawn French. She recalled: “There were not many female acts then. One night it was a really lousy crowd. We went on and someone shouted, ‘Get your **** out’. Dawn stopped and said, ‘Right. No. Stop it. Lights up. Who’s that? Now sit down and stop it’. “And there was just silence and they stopped it and afterwards they came and apologised and it was the river police on a stag party. I felt very safe after that. Dawn does not take any nonsense.”

Council probes Ed Sheeran gazebo Ed Sheeran is facing a council probe over a new wooden gazebo on his property. The 30-year-old pop star gave fans and his neighbours a behindthe-scenes look at his Suffolk estate when he posted a jokey video on Instagram of him glugging wine - but the clip appears to have triggered a potential problem. A source told tabloid newspapers: “It beggars belief that anyone would take the time to phone the council and complain about it but someone has. “The gazebo was spotted after Ed posted a video of himself in the garden last month talking about his music comeback. It can be seen when he is standing outside his boozer, the Lancaster Lock. “He had permission to build a bar area, with decking and a pizza oven, along with two barbecues. But whoever complained is saying that the gazebo was never there before. “Now the council is looking into whether he needs planning permission for it. Because his

property is Grade Two listed, all sorts of hoops have to be jumped through if any work is done.” East Suffolk council has confirmed that it’s investigating the complaints. The authority said: “We have been made aware

that a gazebo has been erected at this property and we are making enquiries to establish if there are any planning requirements.” Meanwhile, Ed was recently announced as the new sponsor

25

of Ipswich Town, his favourite soccer team. The pop star who previously sponsored an under-11 girls team - revealed it took a lot of hard work to strike a deal. He said: “I started sponsoring Framlingham Town Under-11 girls team, they emailed me ... and then I was like, I wonder how it is to sponsor Ipswich?” Ed knew that the team’s previous sponsorship deal was ending and he was keen to fill the void. The singer thinks the news has been broadly welcomed because fans know he cares passionately about the team. He said: “I just enquired, ‘Do you guys need a sponsor?’ and they were like, ‘Yeah for sure.’ “It’s been a long, long process. I think the positive reaction stems from the negative reaction from the European Super League. It’s like a polar opposite of really, really, really rich people who own a team and monetise a team and people who love a team and want to see it do well.”

Huge success during first week of Bono Consumo From June 18th to 24th, the first week of the ‘Bono Consumo’ voucher scheme, residents and tourists bought vouchers worth €110,805 (with spending value of €221,610) through the website torrevieja. bonoconsumo.es. The Bonoconsumo campaign

is an initiative by Torrevieja City Council, in collaboration with APYMECO, designed to encourage spending in the town, especially in small businesses and the hospitality sector. In the first week of the scheme, 164 establishments have signed up to the initiative. The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, expressed his satisfaction at the great reaction to the initiative. Anyone living

in or visiting Torrevieja can buy the voucher and exchange it in any of the participating establishments until September 30, 2021. The campaign has an initial municipal investment of €500,000, which will have an impact on direct spending of

one million euro. In addition, the mayor revealed that for the last quarter of the year the town hall has planned to continue with another investment of €500,000. In total, the town hall intends to invest one million euro in the scheme, which would have a direct impact on local spending of two million euro. Both the town hall and the Association of Small and Medium Merchants of Torrevieja

(APYMECO) predict that during the month of July, the first €500,000 worth of vouchers will sell out. There is a limit of €100 per person and there is a list of participating establishments, including a number of popular restaurants, bars and shops, on the website. T h e vouchers have a value of 10 and 20 euros, of which the buyer contributes half the amount, that is, you pay 5 or 10 euros for a voucher worth 10 or 20. The remaining amount is directly paid by Torrevieja City Council to the establishments participating in the campaign. Once you buy the vouchers, you can display it on your mobile or print the PDF. To buy vouchers, or to register your business as a participant in the scheme (if your business is based in Torrevieja) log on to the website www.torrevieja. bonoconsumo.es

Check the uV Protection of your sunglasses for National Sunglasses Day The 27th of June is National Sunglasses Day, an awareness day to celebrate and share the importance of wearing UV protective eye wear to protect your vision. To support this cause, throughout this summer Specsavers Ópticas are offering a free UV checking service in store to allow residents to check the protection that their sunglasses are giving their eyes. Francisco Jurado, Director of Specsavers Ópticas in Torrevieja explains, “UV rays can damage our vision as well as our skin. Prolonged UV exposure has been linked to cataracts, macular degeneration, and even some types of eye cancer. Sunglasses are not just fashion accessories, so it’s particularly important that you wear a good pair that offer high levels of UV protection. Unfortunately, not all sunglasses provide sufficient protection from damaging UV rays, so make sure your sunglasses conform with agreed safety standards. Look out for CE (European Community Standard), BSEN1836 (British Standard) or UV400 markings and aim for a pair that offer 80 percent light

reduction. Wearing sunglasses that do not meet the European industry standard protection of UV380 rating, especially those with dark lenses, is more damaging to the eyes than not wearing any at all. Dark lenses make the pupil dilate and let in more harmful rays than if you weren’t wearing them, because without the glasses the eyes would naturally squint to keep the rays out. This is why we’re offering UV protection checks in store, to make sure your eyes are properly protected from the sun this summer.” There are five Specsavers

Ópticas stores on the Costa Blanca offering the UV check service, in Javea, Calpe, Benidorm, Guardamar and Torrevieja. Visit www. specsavers.es to find your nearest store.

What is a hysterectomy and when would it be performed? A hysterectomy is surgical intervention that consists of removing the uterus. Women who undergo this surgery lose their ability to become pregnant, something that can have many psychological and physical effects, especially in younger patients.

Why is this procedure performed? One of the main reasons why women should have regular gynaecological check-ups is the prevention of certain diseases, including uterine cancer. In fact, one of the usual tests in gynaecological consultations is the Pap test (smear test), which consists of taking cells from the cervix for analysis. Cervical cancer, although a rare disease, is one of the main causes for recommending a hysterectomy, although it is not the only one. As Dr. Rodolfo Díaz, gynaecologist at Quirónsalud Torrevieja and Alicante explains, there are multiple indications why a woman should have her uterus removed. He explained, “Uterine cancer is possibly the most serious cause for which we must perform a hysterectomy. But there are also other benign diseases for which we must perform the same procedure. Some of them are fibroids, adenomyosis, endometriosis, heavy menstrual bleeding or functional metrorrhagia,

and genital prolapse. In these cases, the goal of performing a simple hysterectomy is to improve the quality of life of patients.” hysterectomies can be: • Subtotal hysterectomy. In this procedure, the upper part of the uterus is removed, but the cervix is left in place. • Total hysterectomy. It is the most common hysterectomy, and in it the uterus and cervix are removed. • Radical hysterectomy. In it, in addition to the uterus and cervix, the tissue surrounding the cervix, known as the parametrium, is also removed. As the name suggests, a radical hysterectomy is the most serious and invasive, and is performed only in cases of cervical cancer. Sometimes the ovaries are removed during the surgery but this depends on the reason for surgery, the age of the patient and her hormonal status. In addition to the type of hysterectomy, the gynaecologist must also choose the most appropriate approach for each patient. The routes to perform a hysterectomy can be: Laparotomy (opening the abdominal wall) or laparoscopic: minimally

invasive technique, in which the surgery is performed through small incisions. There is also the vaginal route in which the birth canal is used to remove the uterus.

The type of anaesthesia used will depend on the approach and will impact the recovery time of the patient. Dr Díaz explained, “For a laparoscopic and laparotomic hysterectomy, general anaesthesia is used. For the vaginal route, general or local anaesthesia can be used. If the route used is minimally invasive or vaginal, the patient can lead a normal life in two weeks. After a laparotomic hysterectomy or a total abdominal hysterectomy, recovery can take up to a month.”

What happens after the hysterectomy? Some of the side effects of hysterectomy and its postoperative complications include the risk of bleeding, infections, fistulas, or injury to neighbouring organs in the pelvis. Another obvious and direct consequence of the removal of the uterus is the inability to gestate an embryo and, therefore, to achieve a pregnancy, something that can affect women both physically and psychologically. In premenopausal women, it is recommended to leave the ovaries intact to continue producing hormones and not to induce menopause with surgery. Even so, to become mothers, these patients must opt for techniques such as in vitro fertilization (embryo transfer will need to be carried out using a surrogate), uterus transplantation or adoption. In postmenopausal women, the decision can be more straightforward. Dr Díaz, specialist in gynaecology at Quiron Salud Alicante and Torrevieja, explained, “Once the menopause has arrived, the uterus has finished with its physiological function. Therefore, in the case of menopausal women,

if there is an indication to remove the uterus, it can only lead to an improvement in the quality of life without any physical consequence. As for the psychological impact, it will depend a lot on each individual patient. “ gynaecological care and controls after a hysterectomy For women whose main issue is pain, hysterectomy represents a significant improvement in their quality of life. Post operative recommendations, which can vary depending on the type of hysterectomy, usually include total rest, not lifting weights, not engaging in intense sports, or avoiding intercourse for a period of time. On the other hand, all patients are recommended to perform pelvic floor exercises, maintain healthy and active lifestyle habits, and eat a balanced diet. ‘Kaffir’ lime leaves deemed racist Jamie Oliver is to drop the term “Kaffir lime leaves” in his recipes in favour of “lime leaves”. His decision comes amid concerns that the term has historically been used as a racial slur in South Africa. Going forward, the celebrity chef will no longer use the term in his recipe books or TV shows, and his team are reportedly in the process of editing his online content to remove the term. Kaffir lime leaves come from the citrus hystrix plant, which is native to Southeast Asia. It

is known as kaffir lime, Makrut lime, Thai lime or Mauritius papeda. In South Africa, “Kaffir” is a highly charged racial slur that refers to black Africans. It was used widely in the apartheid era and is now commonly referred to as the “K-word”. A number of supermarkets, including Waitrose and Tesco, have also chosen to remove the word from their lime leaves packaging. Last week, Waitrose was the first supermarket to announce its plan to change the

product name to avoid causing offence. The retailer said the decision was “in response to customer comments we’ve received” and the product would be labelled as Makrut lime leaves on its packaging, its recipe cards and at its Cookery Schools. Waitrose packaging with the new name is due to be rolled out by early next year. The dried lime leaves are a staple in Southeast Asian cooking, but many are unaware of the racial connotations.

At last HELP concludes its bike raffle On Saturday 26th June HELP Murcia Mar Menor was at last able to present the bike that has been trying to raffle for nearly two years. The machine was donated to HELP by an ex pat who was returning to the UK in the summer of 2019 and it was decided to raffle it to raise some much needed funds for the Charity. As with so many plans made over the last couple of years every time a date was set to draw the winning ticket Spain went into a lock down due to the Covid 19 epidemic and the draw had to be canceled. Due to the lifting of restrictions HELP was able to hold a fun golf morning at Golf Delux on Friday 18th June and it took the opportunity to draw the winning ticket for the much

delayed raffle. The lucky winner Amber Hetherington was presented with the machine by Joan Mitchell, Office Manager

for Help at HELP´s office in Los Alcazares. Amber was delighted with her prize and we wish her many happy hours using it.

Drinking four cups of coffee a day can reduce the risk of chronic liver disease Drinking up to four cups of coffee a day can help reduce the risk of chronic liver disease, a study has found. Researchers from the University of Southampton and the University of Edinburgh found drinking caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee was associated with a reduced risk of developing liver conditions, including liver disease, when compared to not drinking coffee. The benefit peaked at three to four cups a day, the research suggests. Scientists found that coffee drinking had a 21 percent reduction in

risk of chronic liver disease, a 20 percent reduced risk of chronic or fatty liver disease and a 49 percent reduced risk of death from liver disease. The benefits were seen in people who drank ground coffee, which contains a high level of Kahweol and cafestol. Both ingredients showed benefits against chronic liver disease in animals. Instant coffee also showed a reduced risk of liver disease, but it was smaller than the reduction seen in ground coffee drinkers.

“Coffee is widely accessible and the benefits we see from our study may mean it could offer a potential preventative treatment for chronic liver disease,” said Dr Oliver Kennedy, the lead author. “This would be especially valuable in countries with lower income and worse access to healthcare and where the burden of chronic liver disease is highest.” Dr Kennedy and his team studied UK Biobank data on 495,585 participants

with known coffee consumption, who were followed for around 10 years to monitor who developed liver conditions. Overall, 78 percent (384,818) drank ground or instant caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee, while 22 percent (109,767) did not drink any type of coffee. During the study period, there were 3,600 cases of chronic liver disease, including 301 deaths. The researchers warned that as coffee consumption was only reported when participants first enrolled in the study,

the study does not account for any changes in the amount or type of coffee they consumed over the study period. The participants were predominantly white and from high social-economic backgrounds, so the finding may be difficult to generalise to other countries, the study adds. According to the British Liver Trust, deaths due to liver disease have increased by 400 percent since 1970 and every day, more than 40 people die from the disease in the UK.

Poor diet could lead to dangerous driving Having a poor diet may increase the risk of dangerous driving for truck drivers, a new study suggests. A Beijing-based team of researchers looked at the diets of nearly 400 male truck drivers in Suzhou, China - a city west of Shanghai in the Jiangsu province. They determined that drivers who ate more more junk food, snacks and animal proteins were more likely to be fatigued and drive dangerously, which could lead to car crashes. Conversely, truck operators who ate vegetable-rich diets were more likely to be safer and more alert on the road. Most of the drivers were between the ages of 31 and 60, with between six to 10 years experience as a driver, and between 31,000 to 62,000 miles (50,000 and 100,000 kilometers) on the road in an average year. Each of the drivers in the study, printed in the Occupational & Environmental Medicine journal, was given a survey, asking how often they ate each of 25 different types of food over the past 12 months. Drivers were placed into categories according to their reported diets: vegetable rich, staple foods (like eggs, milk and other common items), animal proteins and snack foods. They also completed Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory surveys, which judge physical and mental fatigue, and they were surveyed on their behaviors and attitudes while

on the road. Those who ate vegetable rich or staple food diets were found to have less fatigue and be safer drivers. They were more attentive, made fewer errors while driving and were less aggressive with their driving. Meanwhile, drivers with animal protein-based diets and those who were on snack food diets were more likely to be unsafe drivers. All truckers in these two groups were likely to make more errors and be more aggressive than their peers, with drivers on snack food diets being especially unlikely to exhibit positive driving behaviours. ‘The results of this study support a relationship between dietary patterns and driving behaviour in a sample of professional truck drivers,’ the researchers wrote. ‘Moreover, through the pathway analysis reported, it is possible to conclude that positive driving behavior can be predicted by prudent dietary patterns such as vegetable-rich diets, while some dangerous driving behaviors (errors, lapses and violations), can be predicted by unhealthy dietary patterns characterized by high intake of fats and [sugars].’ Both of the latter two categories were also associated with higher levels of fatigue.

There have long been links between eating a healthier diet and having more energy throughout the day, and being more attentive. Truckers often eat at truck stops, and do not have time to cook for themselves, instead eating the food available to them at these stops. About 37 percent of the truckers in the study either ate all of their meals or a lot of their meals at truck stops. Truckers who brought food from home were often eating healthier foods like fruits, vegetables and nuts rather than the meats, snack foods and sugary foods those who ate on the roads did. The researchers also note that there are demonstrable links between making unhealthy life choices and also living a more dangerous lifestyle, as people who eat more unhealthy food are more likely to take unneeded risks. Because fatigued drivers were more likely to be dangerous, and fatigued drivers were more likely to make the poorer diet choices, researchers believe the fatigue played a role in less attentive and error prone driving as well.

Fourth country in the Eu with fewer deaths Pere Navarro and Jesus Monclús, General Director of Traffic and Director of Prevention and Road Safety at Fundación MAPFRE, respectively, are the editors of the book “From Infinity to Zero: This is how we did it”. This publication collects the living testimony of more than 50 protagonists of road safety from the last 30 years. Because Spain is the fourth European country with the lowest mortality on the road and is an international benchmark in road safety. The data Spain has become an international benchmark when it comes to reducing traffic accidents. Between 1989 and 2019, the number of traffic victims went from 9,344 deaths to 1,755, which represents a reduction of 80%, a figure that in 2019 placed Spain as the sixth country with the lowest rate of traffic deaths, behind Sweden, Ireland, Malta, Denmark, and Luxembourg. In 2020, Spain rose to fourth position in this ranking. The autonomous communities that have most reduced road accidents in the last three decades are Asturias (88%), Castilla La Mancha and Castilla y León (87%), Cantabria (84%), the Basque Country (83%) and Galicia (82 %). The testimonials The keys to success have been many. We are talking about a model, which, in the opinion of the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, has been based on a “greater general awareness”, civil society as the true engine of change, which has relied on “the work of many”, from different sectors and actors that have collaborated together in an integrated manner, and that has made it possible for road accidents to be perceived as“intolerable”. For

the minister “The strength of our road safety policy is based on four fundamental pillars: education in values and continuous training of drivers; a precise and necessary regulation, which is complied with; the Safe System, based on accepting human error, that prevents deaths and injuries; and the associations of victims of road violence, our best guide and to whom we have given a voice”. Most experts believe that the reduction of road accidents and serious injuries is the result of great efforts in different areas, such as education, awareness, regulation monitoring and key legislative changes, such as the points system or the reform of the Penal Code, which have been produced in an environment of significant improvement of roads and vehicles, promoted by the European Union, the United Nations and the WHO, which have made it possible to improve mobility and signalling, vehicle safety and transport of dangerous goods, harmonise the different types of driving licences and driver training, among others, and where victims’ associations have played a crucial role in making the problem visible and mobilising individual, collective and political consciences, essential for action. But there are many other factors, such as the existence of a State policy over and above the political debate and an institutional organisation such as the DGT that has led it, as well as plans for the improvement and unfolding of the highways; the AVE, which has prevented many long-distance journeys and many victims; the improvement of health emergency services; have a well-trained, committed and stable body of public professionals at the state, regional

and municipal levels; the importance of research, fundamental to discover, learn and improve the effectiveness of road safety work; the radar plan and the creation of the road safety prosecutor’s office, as highlighted by Pere Navarro and Jesus Monclús, General Director of Traffic and Director of Prevention and Road Safety of Fundación MAPFRE, respectively, The largest retrospective in the history of road safety The book collects the living testimonies of more than 50 protagonists of road safety in Spain in the last three decades. It also analyses the factors that have made it possible for Spain to go from being at the bottom of Europe, at the end of the 1980s, to occupying one of the positions highlighted by its relatively low accident rates. The Spanish population rate in 2019 stood at 37 deaths per million inhabitants, extremely far, for example, from that of most Latin American countries, whose index is between 142 and 209 deaths per million inhabitants. It also allows us to recognise the work carried out by public and private entities, to appreciate their effort, to reflect on the experiences that have allowed us to get to where we are, to learn, to teach and to gain momentum to advance and achieve Goal Zero. Among them, several general traffic directors stand out, such as Miguel María Muñoz, Gregorio Serrano and María Seguí; Juan José Matarí, president of the Road Safety Commission of the Congress of Deputies; Bartolomé Vargas, coordinating prosecutor for Road Safety; Mar Cogollos, director of AESLEME; Álvaro Gómez, director of the National Road Safety Observatory; Mario Arnaldo, president

of AutomovilistasEuropeosAsociados; the researchers, Francisco Aparicio and Blanca Arenas; businessmen such as Jorge Cosmen, president of ALSA; Jordi Jane and Teófilo de Luis, former presidents of the Congressional Road Safety and Sustainable Mobility Commission; María Teresa Sanz, former administrator of Road Safety at the European Commission; Doctors Isabel Casado and Salvador Espinosa, and international experts, such as Matthew Baldwin, European Coordinator of Road Safety and Sustainable Mobility of the European Commission, among others. Challenges for the future The book shows that Spain needs to “revitalize” its road safety policy in the coming years, to fight against what has been called “exhaustion” of certain road safety measures. It also highlights that to fight against the accident figures and the human pain they represent, it is necessary to focus on vulnerable users, such as pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, and users of scooters, who in 2001 represented 32% of the deceased and, in 2019, 53% of the total. It also proposes promoting active and sustainable travel, such as cycling; pay special attention to new mobility, such as shared vehicles; and promote greater coordination in national, European and global mobility in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), which, according to most authors, will contribute to halving, by 2030, the number of deaths and injuries serious, and achieve Goal Zero in the shortest time possible. “The challenges for the future - says Pere Navarro - are, first, the safety of motorcyclists: every year we have more accidents and more deaths on motorcycles: second, pedestrians

and cyclists, because there are more vulnerable deaths than occupants of cars, vans ; and third, a decided commitment to the connected vehicle, which will allow communication with other vehicles and with the infrastructure and which represents the great leap in road safety”. For Matthew Baldwin, European Coordinator for Road Safety and Sustainable Mobility at the European Commission: “Road safety continues to be one of the great unsolved global challenges: 1,350,000 people die on the roads around the world every year. One of the basic conditions to achieve continued success is to continue improving and Spain is demonstrating this with the application of measures such as limiting city traffic to 30 kilometres per hour. Advances do not happen by chance. They are the result of visionary leadership”. More research, technology, and education The book emphasises that to achieve this objective we have the necessary knowledge and measures, and that it only takes more leadership, more resources and greater coordination in all areas. In this sense, it highlights the role of the investigation, essential for the statistics to be completed with detailed reports, which are analysed in real time by technical committees and allow immediate measures to be proposed to prevent the same incidents from occurring again. It also emphasises the need to make better use of traffic management technology, smart roads, advanced vehicle safety systems and connectivity, and the importance of emphasising road safety education in schools, improving awareness of drivers, with talks given by road victims.

Match Fishing report This week both clubs, Abbey Anglers and Rods N Reels made the journey into Murcia to fish the beautiful Embalse De Argos near to Carravacca De La Cruz. Day 1 Abbey Anglers The match was fished in lovely sunny weather with a nice cooling breeze. The only problem with this is that it did attract a large amount of small black flies that were constantly in and out of your bait. We fished either side of the the match point as per usual with 7 anglers on the warm side and 3 on the cold. Winner on the day was Barry Smith, drawn on peg 5 he fished the feeder with maggots or pellet for a nice net of carp for 38.68kg. In second place was myself , Ian Brown, I was drawn on peg 11 on the cold side nearest to the point , I caught for most of the day mainly fishing a slow sinking feeder with a 6mm pellet

for 31.44kg which included at least 6 barbel. As is the norm at this venue I did loose an incredible amount of fish mainly near to the net but this is just fishing. In third place on peg 7 was Nick Bastock. He also fished the slow sinking feeder for 30.68kg. The `pairs competition was won by Barry and Ricahrd King with 50.86kg. Day 2 Rods n Reels The weather and conditions were exactly the same for day 2. Richard King who was drawn on the famed peg 1 for the second day running, fished an excellent match to weigh in 34.78kg of carp. He also lost a lot of fish close to the net and was fishing pellet or wafter on the method feed at about 25m out. In second place was his room mate and travelling partner Richard Tricky Woods. Drawn on the end peg 8, he

again caught carp on the method feeder for 33.10kg. In third place was Barry Smith who used feeder tactics for 32.26kg allthough he did have a very baron spell mid match were he struggled to catch a fish. The pairs competition was won by Barry and Nick with 59.68kg. Once again we stayed at The Argos hotel which is two minutes away from the venue an allthough only a 2 star establishment the rooms and service were spot on and ideal for a fishing trip to this venue. Further details can be found on our website www.abbeyangling.es Ian Brown

After its successful debut a couple of weeks ago we played the competition known as ‘Medford’ on Monday. This is where the number of points scored on the back nine holes is deducted from the number of net strokes taken on the first nine. The lower your final score the better! Andrea Martin kept up her run of winning form with 16. Just one shot behind her was Pat Cassidy who edged out Andy Martin on countback. It was a ‘Joker Stableford’ on Wednesday with each player nominating two holes before starting where the number of points scored was to be doubled. Pat Cassidy got his revenge and took the day with an outstanding 46 points (and yes handicaps would be cut on these results). Paul Brown managed runners up with 42 whilst Andrea

is contemplating turning pro after earning third place with 40 points. Two ‘2’s today, both from the same player, but we don’t mention his name anymore! After a bit of a lean spell I was finally part of the winning team on Friday. Together with Andy Martin (yes he gets a mention), Mike Chapman and Olga Douglas we scored 153 points in a ‘Yellow Peril + 2 to score’. With 142 it was Lindsay Forbes, RegAkehurst, Alan Douglas and Joyce McClusky who took silver. Breaking news! The World Health Organisationhas announced that dogs cannot contract Covid-19. Dogs previously held in quarantine can now be released. To be clear, WHO let the dogs out. Pues hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell

Thirty two members, including 2 playing for their Handicap and 1 guest competed in an individual stableford competition. The course as normal was in good condition and the greens were slick, as usual. With the temperature edging towards the summer peak, my hopes of posting a good score, like a lot of others, wilted in the midday sun! Following the game we made the short journey back to the Lo Crispin Tavern, where as usual we were also provided with Tapas and the day’ s prizes distributed. gold Division 1st. Place - Ray Hampton 33 pts. off 11 2nd. Place - Mark Good 25 pts. off 16 (on count back) 3rd. Place - Bill Croft 25 pts. off 18 Silver Division 1st. Place - Mike Ellson 31 pts. off 25

P. on Par 3s Hole 3 - Paul Flanaghan Hole 6 - Howard Soltau Hole 13 - Richard Brady Hole 16 - John Dunnion The Guest Prize (including those playing for Handicap, was once again won by 11 year old Jamie Ellis, with a score of 28pts. off 36. There were no 2s, so the ‘pot’ will roll over for a 2nd time in succession. The Free Game Draw was won by one of our Committee Members, Charlie Robertson. Finally, our next game will be at Villamartin on 7th. July, when we will be playing for the Summer Cup. Steve Harrington. (Membership and Handicap Secretary)

TALES FroM THE ToP FLiGHT n chris darwen chris@costablancapeople.com

This Euro 2020 thing only really gets going on Tuesday, right? The small matter of England, oh so conveniently at home, versus Germany - a German side that many are calling/ hoping the worst German team since Euro 2000. Tuesday night is the moment when we find out whether Gareth Southgate is an elite football coach who happens to be a very nice man or just a very nice man. Germany are there for the taking, Gareth - so take them, please. Please take them. Nobody can deny what Southgate has done in his tenure to date - coming across brilliantly in the media, enforcing a set of morals in the national team where possible, navigating the stormy waters of last year or so plus notching up the small matter of a World Cup and Nations League semi-final double. He’s got England out of their Euro 2020 group without conceding a goal (just don’t look too closely at the goals for column). We no longer stick rigidly to 442, or 451 or whatever it was Uncle Roy had us playing against Iceland. Yet, none of that matters if he does not get Tuesday night right. Rumour has it that the FA are already lining up Southgate’s next contract as a reward for the job he has done to date. The FA are clearly still idiots if this is the case. If Southgate fails to take us past Germany in what is tantamount to a tournament on home soil which the quality of player he has available, he should not be rewarded with a new deal until a full review is written up (and probably ignored). Granted, better candidates are hardly banging on the door, but let’s not get too hasty in securing failure for the next couple of years, eh? But, getting all positive briefly, England can beat the Germans if Southgate is brave enough to set the right players loose. There’s chat that Mason Mount will be brought straight back in after sitting the Czech game out after spending 180 seconds too long trying to understand what Billy Gilmour was talking about in the Wembley tunnel. There’s also a belief that Southgate might go with a back three. Bakayo Saka, superb against the Czechs is awaiting the tap on the shoulder and the ‘your time will come’ conversation whilst goal-creating Jack Grealish will also be nervously waiting for the team sheet. Both simply have to play which means for me, Mason is on the bench - sorry Frank, sorry Tommy T, sorry to everyone else who thinks Mount is the greatest thing since nicely sliced wholemeal. Grealish and Saka did nothing to warrant being dropped and Mount didn’t do anything against Croatia or Scotland to nail himself down in the team. England need pace to get at

Germany, a team that were so poor they apologised to Thomas Muller and Mats Hummels to get them out of a Jogi Lowimposed retirement to play in this tournament. Germany were five minutes away from being knocked out by Hungary though it is unlikely they will be that bad again.

England have been practising the long walk to the penalty spot in case this one follows the pattern of 1990 and 1996 and goes to a shoot-out. If it does, my money is it being Jordan Henderson and/or Harry Maguire who miss. Wales’ trip around Europe has come to a shuddering halt. The Welsh had to travel 5,000 miles plus in their four matches - whereas some other nations (hi, England) have barely had to cross the road to get to their next match. Denmark scored four, Wales didn’t in Amsterdam - leading to the biggest question of the evening. No, not that of Gareth Bale’s future which he answered with good grace - that of why “we” call Denmark Denmark and why “they” call it Danmark. Just wait until that person learns that they have a whole language of their own as well. Heads will explode. If Austria can put the wind up Italy, are they actually all that? Given that this record-breaking run the Italians are on hasn’t included not losing to anyone who is actually any good, should anyone be that scared? Probably not and now watch them win it. Matthijs de Ligt might not be feeling his happiest this morning. The Netherlands should have been 1-0 up after they missed a great chance and, in standard football biting-you-on-thebum style they were down to ten men moments (well moments plus VAR time added on) later after De Ligt handled and the referee, upon, review thought he should take an early one. Frank de Boer clearly hadn’t planned for the Dutch ever being a man short as they were utterly clueless from that moment and the Czechs went through 2-0, de Boer being hit with a very big Schick and is now in a bit of a Holes. The rest of the tournament will no longer be a personal crusade for Cristiano Ronaldo to top Ali Daei’s international goal record. Portugal were knocked out by Belgium 1-0 with the other Hazard scoring the winner - meaning Ronaldo is stranded level with Daei on 109 goals. Ah, bless. Away from all the Euro 2020 stuff, there’s the small matter of a transfer window still in play. Manchester City are believed to have been a little busy, throwing out £100m plus players bids for Harry Kane and Jack Grealish. In all their keenness, it looks like Peppy G and crew have now alienated Raheem Sterling whose nose is firmly out of joint at being offered to Spurs as a makeweight to get Kane. It could have been worse, Raheem - they might have suggested Villa. City also want nobody-has-everheard-of Umar Sadiq from Almeria to replace Sergio Aguero. Hang on, I thought Kane was replacing Aguero?

Maybe Sadiq is replacing one of the other five City are binning off to get Kane - one of which is bound to be Gabby Jesus. Oh, and they’d also like Reece James (understudy to Kyle Walker for England) to replace Kyle Walker. For City, that is. Not for England. City don’t care about the England team, and why would they? Gary Neville and the rest of the world are equally bored of the Jadon Sancho to Manchester United saga. It’s thought that United will now pay about £75m for Sancho and not be completely put off by the fact that Dortmund want shot of him and there must be a reason he’s getting nowhere near the England team right now. That said, if the rumours of Sancho legging it back to Manchester at every available opportunity are true, you can understand why Ole Gunnar Solskjaer thinks it might work. Edinson Cavani is losing so much faith in United’s scouting capabilities that he’s taking it upon himself to file some reports - as a result, United are looking at River Plate’s Nicolas De La Cruz (or Nicky of the Cross which might be a subtle hint from Cavani about the service he’s been getting at Old Trafford) who has impressed in the Copa America. Eduardo Camavinga of Rennes has been a “next big thing” for a couple of years now, so it’s a surprise it has taken this long for United to be concretelylinked to him. Camavinga in, Pogba out to Juventus? That rumour is as old as Camavinga himself. Chelsea are going through a run of near-misses Timo Werner would be proud of. Hakimi has chosen PSG over Stamford Bridge and it looks like if Romelu Lukaku is to also leave Inter it will be for Bayern Munich who must be starting to look to the postLewandowski era. Julian Nagelsmann would also like to restore Werner to his previous glory - a deal Chelsea would probably be open to, maybe if Lewa gets thrown in. Arsenal have bid £50m for Brighton’s Ben White who has every man and his dog telling him to stay put and wait for a proper offer from a proper club. The move for White might be partly funded by shipping Hector Bellerin off to Inter who need a replacement for Hakimi (off to PSG, remember? Do keep up). Granit Xhaka is also keen to help Arsenal’s transfer pot by claiming Rome is one of the most beautiful cities

in the world - just in case Jose was serious about wanting to sign him. Arteta will need some of that extra wedge as he is also keen on Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin and believe they can compete with Real Madrid for the England striker. DLC might not be needed at the Bernebeau after all given that they’ve lined up Erling Haaland for £150m, if you believe the word on the Madrid street - which I don’t incidentally. Everton would like to send someone to Spain, however - they are hoping to persuade Carlo Ancelotti to take James off their hands by way of an apology for stitching them up and leaving. AC Milan hope to have something to say about that move. Liverpool need to get moving in the market and one of their preferred striker options, Salzburg’s Patson Daka, looks set to sign for Leicester City and get labelled the “new Jamie Vardy”. King Klopp has higher hopes for snagging Arsenal reject Donyell Malen and Bayern wideboy Kingsley Coman who, I think, probably has a World Cup medal in his bathroom. Malen might want to practice his one-v-ones before signing a deal. Aston Villa will use some of the Grealish money on Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham - there won’t be much change out of £40m and West Ham continue to believe that all footballers come from the Czech league and want Sparta Prague striker Sima. Tottenham’s new Director of Football is being linked to every available Serie A player but I’d advise all Spurs fans not to get too excited until Fabrizio Paratici can prove he can get a new coach sorted. Leeds understandably want to build on being rather good last season and are aiming to sign Hertha Berlin’s Matheus Cunha and Barcelona’s Junior Firpo for not very much at all. And, of course, the managerial stuff is far from sorted. Steven Gerrard is about the 11th manager to be linked to Tottenham Hotspur since Daniel Levy relieved Jose from his duties - and Gerrard, if he has any sense, will be the 11th to say no. Nuno is thought to be back in the running having not been interesting enough earlier in the recruitment phase. Brighton’s Graham Potter

has made it clear he would not be interested in the job, which is good to know. Everton are inching closer to annoying their fans more than when they appointed Big Sham - Rafa Benitez is on his way to Goodison Park, the board deciding that appointing a good manager is slightly more important than the feelings of fans who still believe Everton should be as good as they were in 1984. They’d have won the European Cup, don’t you know? Lucien Favre, sacked by Dortmund last season, had agreed to take over at Crystal Palace and then changed his mind at the last minute - someone probably told him that Croydon isn’t really in London but they like to pretend it is. At this stage, we have no idea who is next. I mean, Frank de Boer might be free again and cheaper than last time. Yet, the biggest question in all of the latest managerial rumour mongering is this: WHERE IS EDDIE HOWE?
