New restrictions, more to come

After a surge in infections in the Valencian Community, the regional government rolled back some of the ‘freedoms’ of recent weeks and

reinstated certain restrictions once more in a bid to control the spread of the coronavirus and all its variants. As the Costa Blanca People went to

print on Monday, the Supreme Court (tSJCV) was studying whether or not to approve the reintroduction of two of the most controversial restrictions placed on citizens: the night curfew and a limitation on social gatherings.

the Supreme Court announced on Monday that it would not oppose the measures, allowing the curfew to be imposed in selected locations. the final decision is now in the hands of Supreme Court Magistrates and is expected to be announced on Monday night or early on tuesday, just as the Costa Blanca People goes to print. the Valencian Government made a series of requests late last week in the face of a massive surge in infections,

mainly among 20 to 29 year olds where the rate has tripled. the situation has “significantly” worsened, say authorities. the department of health has revealed that outbreaks originating in the “social sphere” in recent days have increased fivefold.

President of the Valencian Community Ximo Puig announced his intention to roll back deescalation in order to stop the spread. While Supreme Court Magistrates decide upon final approval of the curfew and limits on social gatherings, some restrictions have been reintroduced without needing further approval. the Valencian Government revealed a battery of measures, which were introduced on Saturday and will be maintained until July 25. Aside from the pending decision about the curfew and social gathering limits, the following restrictions are now in place: · nightlife closures: ‘ocio nocturno’, that is discotheques, nighclubs and late night venues, are only allowed open under the same conditions as bars and restaurants (closing at 12.30am).

· Bar/Restaurant closing time: the hospitality industry closing time has been brought forward one hour. Bars and restaurants must stop serving customers at 12 midnight and close their doors at 12.30am. · Capacity changes: in bars and restaurants, tables are restricted to groups of 10 outside and groups of 6 inside. · Sale of alcohol: in order to prevent the ‘botellón’, a gathering of people drinking alcohol in a public place, the government has prohibited the sale of alcohol after 8pm in shops and supermarkets. in addition, more police surveillance will be in place to prevent this type of gathering. · large scale events: the capacity of large scale events has been reduced. in open spaces, crowds of 4000 now become 3000 and in interior venues, 3000 becomes 2000. Festivals or parades are still not allowed. · iF FinAl APPRoVAl GRAnted: the curfew would be reinstated from 1am to 6am but would not be across the entire Valencian Community – only in around 40 problem areas, revealed health Minister Ana Bareló. Social gatherings would be limited to 10 people across the Valencian Community if the new measures are approved.

Biker dies in CV-905 crash

Torrevieja West neighbourhood watch

A fatal accident occurred on Saturday evening when a motorbike crashed on the CV-905. the incident took place at KM4 on the dual carriageway which runs between torrevieja and Quesada. At around 7.30pm, a motorbike crashed, leaving the road and landing in the grassy ditch at the roundabout, opposite the turning towards the laguna hotel and Guardamar. the rider was thrown several metres from the bike. he did not survive his injuries, despite efforts by the paramedics to save him.

Caja Rural, and some small local businesses in the Vega Baja and torrevieja, like Mediterráneo Consulters, torrevieja Consult, Aniorte/ laakso, the lounge, Floyd’s Bar, the Royal oak, and the emerald isle, all of whom are supporting the festival.” For the full line-up and all the details, see page 27.

torrevieja council have classified the town into 11 areas and San luis, la Siesta and el Chaparral are classed as being torrevieja north. to keep in line with the town hall, organisers are changing the name of this group to toRReVieJA noRth neiGhBouRhood WAtCh. A spokesperson told the Costa Blanca People, “We advise members to keep using the Facebook site as the best means of getting up to date reports and information. We thank all our members for their continued support.”

Vaccine volunteers praised the great work of the team of over 30 volunteers working at torrevieja’s vaccine centre has been praised. As well as medical and administrative staff at torrevieja’s CMo building, which is being used as a mass vaccination centre, there is a team of volunteers working to take temperatures, clean hands and generally, control the flow of people through the facility. torrevieja’s councillor for nGos and Volunteering, Concha Sala, was keen to praise the

work of the volunteers, highlighting the exemplary work being carried out. All volunteers have received a distinctive vest so that visitors to the CMo can recognize them and also ask them any questions they may have. Flamingos leave the salt lake, abandoning young the colony of flamingos which recently returned to the wetlands around torrevieja’s pink salt lake have left, leaving behind around 200 young. nature association, Amigos de los humedales, said that it regrets that the Generalitat did not take care to monitor the birds at the torrevieja lake, the colony nesting in the salt marsh for the second time since records began. the reasons for the fleeing of the flamingos are not yet known but it is hoped that an investigation can be opened to find out why they left and to ensure next time, they stay. A spokesperson for Amigos de los humedales (AhSA, Friends of the Wetlands) Sergio Arroyo said that in early May, it was possible to observe as many as 500 flamingos gathered on the central plain of the lake, near where they had successfully nested last year. on May 14th, the first eggs were detected and later, experts were able to identify around 200 nests across a half a kilometre stretch. the experts from AhSA said that although the

environmental conditions this year, “were clearly less favourable for the reproduction of the species, both due to the availability of food and the accessibility to the nesting place, the flamingos were encouraged to form a colony.” the storms and downpours of late May and early June “were fatal” for other nesting species

in the natural Park, such as the gray-footed terns thalasseus sandvicensis, the common terns Sterna hirundo or the beaked gull Chroicocephalus genei, “however it seemed that the flamingos had weathered the heavy spring rains well.” Add to that the massive fire which devastated more than 15 hectares of wetland that, although far from the nesting

area of most of the birds, did generate extra pressure on the lake and surrounding ecosystem at a critical moment when the flamingos were settling in the area. on Sunday last, observers realised that adult flamingos were no longer observed on the central plain of the lake. on Monday, they were able to confirm that the flamingos had abandoned the colony and left their young behind. the experts calculated that when the adult birds left the area, the chicks would have been a few days old at most. Arroyo regrets that the natural Park “has not carried out any monitoring of the colony, indeed they were completely unaware of the abandonment of the colony.” he said that this “reflects the unfortunate management suffered by the natural parks in the south of Alicante”, in the opinion of AhSA. in recent days, the possibility of trying to rescue the abandoned chicks was being discussed by residents and experts who know the torrevieja wetland and who followed the evolution of the colony last year.

Drug operation disbanded Guardia Civil has disbanded a criminal gang in torrevieja, making eleven arrests. the gang, ten men and one woman, are accused of breaking into houses to illegally occupy them, or sell them at ridiculously low prices. they are also accused of electricity fraud, robbery, crimes against public health and belonging to a criminal organisation. of the 11 arrested, 9 have been sent to prison without bail, one was released with charges while one, a minor, has been released to the custody of relatives. the gang’s leader, a 25 year old man, would choose the houses to target. the gang would break in where it is suspected he either sold them illegally for prices as low as €1000, or converted them into a point of sale for drugs. if the plan was to sell the property,

all valuables would be removed and stored at the man’s parents house in order that they could later be sold. Another gang member would arrange to have the water and electricity illegally connected. the drug houses were manned 24 hours by the man’s subordinates – including the arrested minor who was the son of another gang member – and were located all over torrevieja including beside a nursery and a primary school where regular

drug deals were made. the investigation ended simultaneous raids on six homes. officers seized hashish, marijuana and cocaine as well as 188 plants ready for cultivation. Also seized was 1500 euro in cash, ten watches believed to have been stolen as well as a mobile phone listed as stolen. in one of the drug houses a large machete was found, possibly used to deter any altercation that might arise with buyers.

More recycling bins for the coast the department for Street Cleaning has acquired 68 pre-selection recycling bins which are being installed next to playgrounds across the municipality of orihuela. the councillor for the department, dámaso Aparicio, explained that the objective is “to make the little ones aware of the importance of recycling.” A total of 68 bins have been acquired, after tendering a contracting procedure, for an amount of 14,000 euros. in the town of orihuela and districts, 52 units will be installed. n the city the Street Cleaning staff will be in charge of their maintenance, while in the districts it will be done by the public company ildo, S.l. in orihuela Costa, 16 bins have been assigned to the department of infrastructures for their placement and subsequent maintenance by the company Actúa. the new bins are made up of one recycling unit with three individual baskets, for the selective deposit of waste. dámaso Aparicio said that it is intended to encourage responsible waste disposal “for all citizens and especially

children since they are going to be installed in areas closest to the playgrounds” and that the units “make it easy to deposit the waste in the appropriate compartment as each of the baskets has a colour coded lids: blue for paper-cardboard, yellow for plastic packaging and brown for organic waste”. in the current climate change situation “we are at a decisive moment to reverse the effects

of global warming and we must create a change of mentality to meet this challenge. We invite citizens to modify consumption habits and prioritise the reduction of waste and recycling for future generations,” said Councillor Aparicio. these new bins are in addition to the 189 simpleuse bins installed last summer, which saw an investment of 15,996 euros.

Featured on Best Buy Spain - Property TV.

When sorting out your budget to buy a home in Spain, it’s important to know exactly how much to allow for your “extra” costs. these are the legal fees that will be on top of your purchase price. you don’t want to turn up for completion and not have enough money to pay for everything! here’s a short overview for the costs involved in purchasing a property on the Costa Blanca without a mortgage, based on a purchase price of €100,000. 1. Property transfer tax (Stamp duty). When buying a resale property, the tax amount is 10% of the agreed purchase price. For example: €100,000 x 10% = €10,000 2. notary & land Registry fees. Allow €1,000 on a purchase price of €100,000, for both

these fees together. (“the notary” are government appointed officials that draw up the title deeds. they are independent and don’t work for the buyer nor seller). 3. lawyers fees. At a cost of around €1,000, they are worth every penny! More than carrying out the conveyancing (checking for debts and making sure the property is legal) they will give you peace of mind that your investment is safe. By budgeting for these legal costs upfront, there’ll be no hidden surprises once you’ve found your dream home! For information on the buying process in the Costa Blanca, head to www. Still Holding UK ISAs? Many expats living here in Spain retain their uK iSAs as they understand how they work and although the returns are low, the interest is tax free. unfortunately, for Spanish tax residents, there is no such thing as tax free interest.

Bookings to amber list countries surge Bookings to amber list countries have taken off following the announcement fully vaccinated passengers will not need to quarantine upon their return, travel firms said as bookings surge by 400 percent. transport Secretary Grant Shapps announced that uK holidaymakers who have received two jabs from the nhS will no longer be required to self-isolate for 10 days on their return to england from destinations on the amber list. eager Brits wasted no time in booking their summer breaks, and easyJet said bookings to amber list countries were up 400 percent compared to a week ago, and the airline had put on more than 145,000 extra seats. Johan lundgren, easyJet’s chief executive, said: “We have always said that vaccination is the key to unlocking travel and now millions will finally be able to reunite with family and loved ones abroad or take that longawaited trip this summer. travel firm Skyscanner said 30 minutes after the announcement, the agency saw a 53 percent increase in traffic from the uK compared to the same time the day before the annoncement.

Martin nolan, from the company, said: “it’s clear that people are aching to be able to travel again within the guidelines, as evidenced by the immediate uptick in searches and bookings we’ve witnessed as destinations have been added to the green list. thomas Cook said web traffic doubled in the moments after the announcement, and has only grown since. A spokesperson said: “(Before the announcement) we have been selling very few holidays to amber countries and so with Greece, mainland Spain and Canaries all now available to people who’ve been double jabbed we’d expect a flood of bookings over the weekend.” in his announcement, Mr Shapps said under-18s will also be exempted from the quarantine requirement and that the guidance not to travel to countries on the amber list will be lifted by 19th July, when the majority of restrictions are expected to be eased in england. he said people returning from holidays from amber destinations, including France, Spain and Portugal, will still be required to take a Covid-19 test

three days before returning. they will also have to take a test on or before the second day of their return, but will be exempted from the day eight test. the news is highly welcome in Spain uK, where is the main source of foreign visitors to Spain: there were 18 million of them in 2019. Fugitive brothers arrested in Torrevieja two fugitive brothers – believed to be from Manchester – have been arrested this week, along with two other people, after a year on the run. the pair are accused of drug trafficking and stealing a million pounds in Britain. the arrests were made by national Police in torrevieja. the pair are wanted by British authorities – both for their alleged involvement in drug trafficking and one of the brothers for his involvement in the robbery of more than a million pounds. the brothers are accused of trafficking cocaine and cannabis, stealing drugs from other criminal gangs in Britain and using violence. At the time of the arrest, the two fugitives tried to flee along with two other people who were in the car with them at the time. they rammed their car into one of the police cars but in the end they detained despite putting up great resistance, said police. According to the British authorities who issued the arrest warrant for the two brothers, the pair were in charge of drug trafficking, distribution and collection, in addition to a litany of other crimes. the investigation to locate

the brothers has gone on for almost a year. in August 2020, national Police in Spain were alerted by the national Crime Agency (nCA) liaison officer of the possible presence in Spain of two brothers who ran a major criminal organization dedicated to large-scale cocaine and cannabis trafficking. Specialists in locating fugitives immediately began an investigation to discover the whereabouts of the brothers, although this took months because the suspects adopted many precautionary measures

to conceal their movements and used false identities to hinder police. eventually, the Police focused their investigation on the Costa Blanca and in december narrowed the search to orihuela Costa, where it was thought that they could be hiding among the large British community. once their home was located, officers established surveillance and after detecting them in a car driving through torrevieja, proceeded to arrest the brothers along with the two other occupants of the car.

We need to talk about your financial adviser… By Sam Kelly dipPFS, eFA, BA (hons) Managing Partner Chorus Financial commission could be squeezed out of the client, whether through the funds themselves, or an investment bond – i.e., a Spanish Compliant investment Bond, or an international Bond held under a QRoPs or SiPP.

looking back, it’s obvious i was fairly naïve when i first moved to Spain in terms of just how the financial services industry works here. i have been an investor since my teens, more than 20 years now, and have successfully managedinvestment portfolios for many years. When i made the decision to move permanently to Spain, i had no idea the journey it would take me on… beyond the 40 hour drive itself! i arrived here following a job offer from a large global financial advisory firm, well-known here in Spain, with what i perceived to be a pretty good reputation. the truth is, within my first week i was both dumbstruck and horrified by the practises i saw. the entire advice model wasn’t built around client needs and outcomes, transparency and expertise, it was built around how much undisclosed

i immediately realised i could not remain at this company, so quickly began speaking with the other major firms here in Spain. to my amazement i found that every firm i spoke with had exactly the same approach. however they dressed it up, and however well they presented their recommendations, these plans were basically all the same. A bond with a tie-in and a limited fund choice, both of which paid enormous commissions to the adviser whilst the client ultimately saw sub-optimal returns. this wasn’t the type of career i wanted. the reality is, i was already very comfortable in terms of my personal finances, and i hadn’t moved to Spain for some ‘get-richquick’ scheme. i was here because my family have always had a close connection with Spain, my mother has lived here for decades, and every time i got off the plane, when that

warm air hit me, it made me feel like i was already home. i was here to build a life and build a client base who would want to remain with me for many years, not discover a few years down the line that i had ripped them off! Sadly though, that is the case for so many of you living here, and you probably don’t even realise it yet. Spain has had no law requiring fee and commission disclosure like we had in the uK, and many firms deliberately targeted our communities for this very reason. it would not be uncommon to see a client who had been tied in for 5, 8 or 10 years to a Spanish investment bond, QRoPs, even an international SiPP, who had signed paperwork that generated as much as 13% commission for their adviser on the very first day – a combination of bond and fund commissions. With no other company out there that i wanted to join, Chorus Financial was founded. Chorus was built off a vision of ethical, high quality, transparent advice. We have worked tirelessly for many years now to educate our communities here

in Spain, and on two occasions we have won major european awards for those efforts. Sitting here today writing this article, itfills me with so much prideto knowthat Chorus has flourished to become one of the most trusted and successful financial advice companies in europe, from our offices here on the Costa Blanca. our vision and promise continues to be that we will advise you to the best of our abilities, always promising to put you first, with full fee transparency, value and the best investment portfolios available to you. Whether you’re looking for a new pension or investment recommendation, or have an existing plan, perhaps a QRoPs, SiPP or Spanish investment Bond from companies like SeB, Quilter (formally oMi), lombard international or others, Chorus can help you. to discover how Chorus can transform your financial future, email me on s.kelly@chorusfinancial. es, call +34 664 398 702, or visit www.chorusfinancial.es for more information.

Investment contracts are intended as medium to long term investments, and all investments have some level of risk. Figures in our articles are examples of what can be achieved and cannot be guaranteed; the value of your investments can go down as well as up. Fees and charges can vary and will be fully explained to you before any advice can take place. This article should not be considered as investment advice or a recommendation of any particular product.

Ryanair boost to Alicante Airport hot on the heels of the ‘no quarantine’ announcements for Brits travelling to Spain, Ryaniar has scheduled more than 70 routes to and from Alicanteelche Airport this summer and is promoting special offers and cut-price seats to get people travelling again. head of the Costa Blanca tourism trade association José Mancebo met with the irish airline’s marketing and sales managers dara Brady and Chiara Ravara this week to discuss strategy for encouraging new and existing holidaymaker output countries to travel to the province of Alicante. during their videoconference, which also included Alicante-elche airport’s director laura navarro, it was revealed that new flight connections were on the cards from this month. they include routes linking Alicante with Belfast, teesside and the italian airports in Venice treviso and Bari. existing routes to and from Alicante will continue in summer, and be

reinforced. Contagion rates in Spain have risen slightly, but hospital admissions make up a much smaller percentage, since the overwhelming majority of those now infected are between late teens and early 40s, a much lower-risk age bracket. these ages correspond with the

community which has not yet been vaccinated, or who have not had both doses yet – by now, almost everyone aged 40 or over will have had their first dose at least, and regional health authorities across the country are looking to bring forward the vaccine roll-out for the 19-to-39 age group in light of their now being the most

likely to catch the virus. Already, it has been promised that teenagers from 12 to 18 inclusive who are still at school, college or university will be given at least their first vaccine dose not less than two weeks before the September term starts. September is still very much ‘summer’ in weather terms in Spain and very warm climates can still be experienced until almost november, so the industry nationwide is hoping for a late surge if restrictions are not lifted in time for peak season. As for the Costa Blanca’s main airport, even in a bad year, it sees around five million passengers in total – record years have caused this to more than double – and the tourism trade Association Manager told Ryanair’s management how grateful he was to the firm for continuing to keep close business ties with Alicanteelche and focus on it with equal energy, even during lean times for the holiday sector.

GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP While england has spent the week being preoccupied with the euros (the football not the currency), investors too had been feeling broadly positive about the pound. PM Boris Johnson confirmed this week that most of the Covid restrictions will end in a fortnight’s time. investors knew it was coming, so the reaction wasn’t anywhere near as dramatic as the football match against denmark, but sterling had a gently positive day. Between now and Sunday there is the tedious business of business to be done. Fortunately there are not too many interesting ecostats to distract us from the far more important matters. halifax reported that annual house price inflation slowed from 9.6% to 8.8%, the first monthly dip since January. however a lack of available property is still helping push prices up according to the Royal institution of Chartered Surveyors. new properties coming to the market fell by a third in June. in other news, the construction PMi hit a 24-year-high, but the services sector purchasing managers’ index for June was a mixed blessing. At 62.4 it was ahead of the forecast 61.7 but half a point lower on the month. now onto more pressing things - Sterling to

score this weekend? We can only dream, and look out for the PM’s hopeful confirmation on Monday that ‘Freedom day’ on the 19th is indeed still going ahead. EURO After a year and a half of deliberation, the european Central Bank’s strategic review has come to a conclusion. it set itself a new 2% inflation target, but also said it will tolerate some wiggle room, shifting its policy to be more flexible in keeping interest rates lower for longer. the intention it seems is to make 2% look less like a cap and more like the target it is. Although the services PMis from the eurozone were not exactly wobble-free they were almost all multi-month or multi-year highs. the odd one out, ironically, was ireland, whose 63.4 was simultaneously a two-month low and higher than all its peers. the supposed disappointment at Germany’s below-forecast 57.5 was more than a little contrived. it actually represented an almost fivepoint monthly improvement and it was a 10-year high. taking all the eurozone PMis together, the composite reading was slightly ahead of forecast at 59.5, a 15-year high. Released at the same time, the Sentix index of investor confidence came in at 29.8, a three-and-a-half-year high.

This Week´s Movie Picks Bridget Jones´s Baby

Hellboy

on her forty-third birthday, Bridget Jones (Renée Zellweger) is awoken by her mother who reminds her that her time to have children is running out. She goes to attend the funeral of daniel Cleaver (hugh Grant), who is presumed dead after a plane crash. While there, she sees her ex, Mark darcy (Colin Firth) and his new wife. they bump into one another somewhat awkwardly, and then go their separate ways.

At the end of World War ii, nazi officers Karl Ruprecht Kroenen and ilsa haupstein start an experiment to raise the forces of hell trough Russian dark mystic Rasputin on a Scottish island, but it’s interrupted by an allied commando guided by professor trevor “Broom” Bruttenholm. he prevents killing the humandemonic half-blood, which was accidentally created and raises this “hellboy”, while rising to head of a secret C.i.A.-linked u.S. agency Bureau of Paranormal Research, which secretly studies and uses the occult, including supernatural freaks. As “father” Broom is aging, he hand-picks brilliant, sensitive Agent John Myers as new mindercompanion, as regular “warrior” Agent Clay can’t empathize and lacks flexibility mental. hellboy is quite a handful, regularly spotted by worried civilians on unauthorized excursions, especially to pyro-telekinetic freak friend in a mental asylum. Johnny, hellboy, and Clay team up on missions against paranormal threats with aquatic-bionic freak Abe Sapien.

‘Only Yes Means Yes’ Law Pony left to suffer The Spanish Cabinet has greenlighted a sweeping bill to provide comprehensive protection and assistance to victims of sexual violence in all of its forms. Known popularly as the “Only Yes Means Yes” law, this new piece of legislation will likely go to parliament for consideration in September. The bill represents a change of paradigm in Spain as the existence of a sex crime will be defined by a woman’s explicit consent (or lack of it, and not so much by the victim’s attitude – whether she put up resistance or was passive. Spain already has punishment for nonconsensual sex acts, but there is no definition of consent in the criminal code, which requires proof that either violence or intimidation were used to determine the existence of rape. The new bill does not define what is ‘not consent’, but rather what is: “Consent will only be understood to exist when it has been freely manifested through acts clearly expressing the individual’s will, considering the circumstances of the case.” In another first, the bill considers street harassment a crime punishable with house arrest or community service. It will be considered a minor offense to “address another person with expressions, behaviour or propositions of a sexual nature that create an objectively humiliating, hostile or intimidating situation for the

victim,” who will have to file a complaint. Sources in the Equality Ministry said that “it’s not about someone calling you beautiful as you’re walking down the street, or about a random man’s misplaced comment. The legal initiative builds on the experience of a high-profile case involving five men who raped a woman at the 2016 Running of the Bulls festival in Pamplona. The case – known as “La Manada” (The Wolf Pack) after the WhatsApp group that the men used to chat and boast about their sexual exploits – triggered widespread protests and prompted calls for a reform of the criminal code. One of the key elements of the bill is the victim’s “right to reparation.” Lawmakers have rolled out a series of resources for victims of sexual violence, including some that were until now being used for victims of gender violence. There will be financial aid in

the form of the equivalent of six months of unemployment benefits for victims who earn less than the minimum salary. The aid will increase if the victim has a disability or is taking care of dependents. Victims should also have preferential access to public housing. The bill also contemplates action against digital sexual violence, genital mutilation, forced marriages and trafficking of women. Individuals who are sentenced to more than five years in prison for sexual violence against minors or people with disabilities will not be eligible for semi-open prison regimes unless they undergo a treatment program for sex offenders. The new legislation includes a section on conduct that favours prostitution – which is not addressed by any specific law in Spain. The bill punishes “noncoercive pimping” as well as the owners of establishments where prostitution takes place.

in heatwave As we all try and stay out of the sun, given the heat wave sweeping across the province, bare a thought for the team at the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre, who are battling in intense temperatures to keep their equine residents cool and calm. With the thermometer rising, the Rescue Centre this week received another call from the authorities in Almoradi who had found a pony abandoned, tied up to a tree and left without food or water. Sue Weeding, founder of Easy Horse Care, said: “Her condition is heartbreaking. She is skin and bones and shows signs of laminitis, a hoof disease caused by inappropriate feed.” After getting her back to the Rescue Centre in Rojales its equine vet Dorothea examined the newest arrival. She is completely blind in one eye, thought to be from some sort of blow or injury, and her other eye has just 60 percent vision. Sue added: “She is a dear little thing but is so skeletal and she is probably in foal. To think that someone could just tie her up and abandon her in this heat is appalling.” Easy Horse Care will now, as with all their other rescued animals, spend every last euro they have on caring for her and giving her the best life possible. Sue would like to thank the local police in Almoradi, who were so concerned about the welfare of the

pony and took her to the police station, cooled her down and gave her water until the Rescue Centre team could go and get her. This is the 28th equine the Centre has rescued from the town and there is simply nowhere else for these animals to go. Yet, despite the cooperation and support of the local authorities, funding is still severely lacking and they rely on the generosity of fundraisers, donations and money coming in from their charity shops. If you can help in any way, please contact the Centre. You can make a donation via the website at www. easyhorsecare.net For more information contact Sue on 652 021 980.

Coffee facts...

It’s a fruit... When you think of coffee, you probably picture fine, ground brown powder (or brown beans if you’re fancy and grind your own), but it starts life as a fruit. The coffee plant grows little red berries called coffee cherries. The seeds inside are what get roasted and ground, and are what we call beans. When you think of coffee, you probably picture fine, ground brown powder (or brown beans if you’re fancy and grind your own), but it starts life as a fruit. The coffee plant grows little red berries called coffee cherries. The seeds inside are what get roasted and ground, and are what we call beans.

There are two main types... There are thousands of species of coffee plant, but the two you’re most likely to hear of are arabica and robusta, as these are used commercially. Arabica is sweeter with higher acidity, plus complex aromas and flavours. Robusta is smaller, has higher caffeine content and an intense, full-bodied taste. Packages of ground coffee beans usually contain a blend of the two. Coffee is green... Raw coffee looks completely different to roasted coffee – when the beans are picked they’re green. During roasting the starches are broken down into sugars which caramelise, giving the beans a brown colour. It’s similar to what happens when you toast bread (this chemical reaction is called the maillard reaction). Also, a fragrant oil

called caffeol develops.

It’s old... The exact point coffee was discovered is uncertain, as it was so many years ago. But the favoured story dates all the way back to AD 850. An Ethiopian goat herder noticed his animals become energetic after feeding on the ripe berries of an arabica bush. Kaldi the goat herder then sampled the berries and noticed the caffeine effect for himself. The place to be... Coffee was unique to other drinks because it was drunk in public coffee houses in cities across the Middle East and Africa. People came here for entertainment, to socialise and find out the breaking news of the day. By 1675, these café-like spots sprung up in England and were called names such as Turk’s Head, The Jerusalem Coffee House and The Sultaness. Death by coffee... Contrary to other countries, the Ottoman Sultan Murad IV disliked coffee houses as he thought people were plotting

CostaBlancaPeople 13th - 19th July 2021

against him there. In 1633, he made the consumption of coffee punishable by death in Istanbul. He wasn’t the first or last leader to disapprove either. Between the 16th and 18th centuries, many European and Middle Eastern rulers tried to ban the beverage. Coffee culture... Surprisingly, the country that drinks the most coffee isn’t its birthplace Ethiopia or Brazil where it’s widely grown. It’s not even the US or Italy, the home of the espresso. Finland is the country that drinks the most, with 12.5kg (28lbs) per person consumed every year. Caffeine fix... Looking to improve your personal best? There’s a reason Mo Farah drinks coffee before a race. There’s a huge amount of research that backs up the positive effects of caffeine on exercising, including that it can help you run faster. In a study that compared regular coffee drinkers and decaf coffee drinkers, the athletes who consumed normal coffee ran 4.2 seconds faster across a 4,921ft (1,500m) distance.

Ritz cracker fact blows minds Let’s be honest, every day on TikTok is a school day. We are learning so much from those videos. Of course, learning TikTok dances is useful, but the main way TikTok is enriching our lives is the food hacks. And we can already tell that this one to do with Ritz crackers is going to be a game-changer. This food hack was shared from the official Ritz TikTok, so you know it’s legit. Basically, have you ever wondered why the edges of Ritz crackers are scalloped? And no, it’s not just because it’s looks stylish and cute. Those scalloped edges are there so you can use them to cut cheese - mind Blown! In the TikTok video, you can see a slice of Swiss cheese getting cut with the Ritz cracker, which is acting like a pizza cutter of sorts. Admittedly, this hack works best with soft-ish cheese. Not convinced you could cut a huge chunk of Parmesan up using just a cracker but it definitely works on a number of cheeses. Did anyone already know about this hack, because judges by the comments on the video, a whole lot of people are learning about this for the first time. Comments included, “No way”, “Da hell?”, and “I’ve been living a lie.” But, on the flip side, a few people were saying the crackers break if you try and do that. Plus, you could just tear the cheese... or use a cheese knife.

Organic food linked to brain development in children Children who eat organically produced food have been linked with better cognitive development, an international study has shown. Researchers in Spain examined levels of children’s “fluid intelligence”, which is the ability to solve reasoning problems and use “working memory” – the ability to retain new information while it is needed in the short term. The team said their findings suggested healthier diets could have a direct impact on the development of children’s brains. Lead author Jordi Júlvez, who worked alongside academics at Barcelona’s Institute for Global Health, said: “Organic diets are richer than fast food diets in nutrients necessary for the brain, such as fatty acids, vitamins and antioxidants, which together may enhance cognitive function in childhood.” Scientists also said factors such as eating junk food, living in overcrowded houses and exposure to domestic tobacco smoke were associated with reduced levels of fluid intelligence. In addition, exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) indoors was associated with lower working memory scores. The research team used data from 1,298 children aged 6-11 years from six European countries – the UK, France, Spain, Greece, Lithuania and Norway. They examined 87 environmental factors the children were exposed to in utero, including air pollution, traffic, noise, various chemicals and lifestyle factors, and another 122 factors they were exposed to during childhood. They said their aim was to analyse the influence these factors could have on the development and maturation of the human brain.

Avoiding dehydration With temperatures soaring staying hydrated and hitting your daily water quota is essential. The human body is mainly water – 70 percent is made up of it and it is vital for all aspects of the normal functioning of the body including healthy functioning of joints and skin, digestion, waste product removal and muscle and nerve function. Provided enough fluid is drunk each day the body remains hydrated and, in the absence of illness, the body functions as it should. However, if more fluid is lost from the body than is absorbed then dehydration occurs and this may be mild, moderate or severe depending on how much fluid is lost. The symptoms it causes also depends on the severity of the dehydration, ranging from mild thirst to coma or death. We get around two-thirds of the fluid we require from drinks, with the rest coming from fluid in foods and as a result of normal chemical reactions in the body. Most people lose between two and three litres every day through our normal bodily functions such as breathing, urination, defecation and sweating. Factors that can increase fluid loss include sweating in hot weather or with a high temperature, diarrhoea and vomiting, diabetes, exercise, excessive alcohol intake and simply not taking enough fluid during the day. It’s completely normal to lose water through your body each day, through sweat, breath, urine, faeces, saliva and tears.

However, if you don’t replace this water, by drinking or eating foods with a high water content, you will likely become dehydrated. Other risk factors of dehydration include:

as kidney stones, chronic fatigue and kidney stones. While mild dehydration can be rectified by quenching your thirst, at its most severe, dehydration can be life threatening.

• You have been vomiting or have diarrhoea. • You have a high fever. • You have a sore throat (meaning you may not want to drink or eat much). • You have done vigorous exercise. • You have heatstroke. • You have drunk lots of alcohol. • You are on diuretic medication

Dehydration in the elderly Dehydration in older people can cause serious risks if it gets severe, including kidney stones, fainting and low blood pressure. Mobility issues can increase an elderly person’s chance of suffering from dehydration: if they are unable to easily stand and move around independently, they will be far less likely to regularly get up to fetch themselves a glass of water. The best way for all of us to rehydrate and avoid becoming dehydrated in the first place is to drink plenty of water. Coffee, tea, fruit juice, sweetened beverages, fruits and vegetables all contain water, so if someone you know does not like drinking plain water, try to encourage them to up their intake of these other drinks or foods containing water. Jellies, ice lollies and melons are all good alternatives, especially when encouraging an elderly person to increase their fluid intake. Encourage them to keep a water jug or bottle close by, so they’re more inclined to drink more often but always make sure the water container isn’t too big though, as they may struggle to lift and pour it. Instead, it’s better to use a smaller jug that you can refill regularly for them. Try using an app or set an alarm to remind them to drink at regular intervals, especially at mealtimes.

Signs and symptoms of dehydration If you’re thirsty, chances are you know to reach for a glass of water. But for small children and the elderly, it’s not always apparent. Fortunately there are a number of signs to look out for which indicate you may need to hydrate. For most people, the first symptom of dehydration is feeling thirsty but others often develop before this such as fatigue, headache, and a dry mouth. Following thirst comes dizziness, weakness and passing less urine which is also often more concentrated and darker yellow than usual. As dehydration worsens, other symptoms may occur including a raised pulse rate, sunken eyes, an absence of sweating and extreme thirst. Blood pressure may fall and ultimately delirium and loss of consciousness occurs. People who have lowlevel chronic dehydration are more prone to conditions such

My new fella keeps a photo of his two late wives on his mantlepiece. He lost of them both from cancer; the first wife when his two boys were little, and the second only five years ago. I am also a widow, but I was careful not to have photos of my husband around when my

new man and I were first dating. Now he has asked me to marry him. We are both 69. I said yes, and I really do want to settle down again, but the photos of his two wives I know will bother me, and there are no signs of them going anywhere. I want to say something but I also do not

want to seem callous and uncaring, but I feel that I won’t be able to be happy in his home with the two photos there staring at me all the time. I am presuming because he lost his first wife young, that the second wife did not mind the photos being around, but I know I will. . If you wade right in with this one, you

Bartolomé Vargas, Prosecutor of the Road Safety Coordination Chamber, has sent a letter to all the local police in Spain to intensify alcohol and drug controls on drivers of Personal Mobility Vehicles (VMP), especially in cities, something that extends to bicycle riders. Bartolomé Vargas pointed out, at a press conference, that “there have been systematic breaches of road regulations by cyclists and skaters, and by false personal mobility vehicles (VMP) that are really mopeds, which generate a great disturbance, concern and insecurity, with which sustainable mobility, which is the objective, is put at risk”.

Mandatory insurance The Road Safety Prosecutor referred to the danger of driving without insurance lacking sufficient financial solvency on the part of cyclists and drivers of VMP. In fact, Vargas explained that he is committed to obliging all users of this type of vehicle to take out civil liability insurance, both scooters and other personal mobility vehicles (VMP) and bicycles. In this sense, he recalled that conflict situations are already occurring in large cities in accidents with this type of vehicle. In addition, the Road Safety prosecutor, warned of the breach of the rules by scooters and bicycles in the cities:”It is not uncommon to see cyclists run over a red light or that a

scooter user is riding on the sidewalk and is about to run over a pedestrian.” The prosecutor affirms that “the signs are not respected”, for which “a feeling of insecurity, disturbance in the citizen coexistence and conflict is generated that makes the sustainable mobility move away”. For this reason, Vargas assured that the Prosecutor’s Office will maintain contacts with the General Directorate of Insurance and with the Insurance Compensation Consortium to find coverage formulas in relation to

accidents caused by these vehicles and, where appropriate, propose the appropriate legal reforms. Unify criteria In this sense, the letter sent to the urban traffic police by the Road Safety Prosecutor’s Office tries to unify criteria in a triple aspect. On the one hand, “face the phenomenon of the proliferation of vehicles marketed as VMP (...)

sometimes with the appearance of mopeds and with high performance and power level”. The objective of this unification is to determine “which ones fit the concept of moped or motor vehicle with which crimes against road safety can be committed (art. 379 et seq. Of the Penal Code)”, such as driving under the influence alcohol or drugs, reckless driving or without a licence. On the other hand, the Prosecutor ensures that the rules are complied with “by everyone, without exception”, for which he facilitates uniform criteria of action on the subjection of VMP users and cyclists to the Road Safety Law “promoting the exercise of greater rigor of the powers of police surveillance, alcohol and drug controls known and visible to the public, sanctions, immobilisation, withdrawal and deposit in the event of legal infractions generating risk situations and their consideration when the infractions generate harmful results as possible perpetrators of crimes of homicide and reckless injuries”, which are punished, respectively, with penalties of 1 to 9 years in prison and from 3 months to 6 years and 9 months in prison. Third, the Road Safety Prosecutor intends to address the phenomenon of improper commercialisation of these VMP “from sanctioning and preventive strategies.”

TALeS FROM THe TOP FLiGHT n chris darwen chris@costablancapeople.com

Well, there goes England’s 100% record in major finals on home turf then. The Euro 2020 adventure is over - it didn’t come home as it seems to prefer Rome. Southgate’s boys have grew up into fully-fledged very-nearly boys against Italy but it clearly wasn’t meant to be. You can score too early in football and, unfortunately, Luke Shaw appeared to - England dropping deeper and deeper as the game progressed to the point where social distancing with the fans in the stands behind their goal was becoming an issue. The magic touch left Southgate when he needed it most - Jordan Henderson wasn’t exactly a like for like substitution for the excellent Declan Rice on the night, the occasion looked bigger than Saka when he came on and whilst there was a lot of logic and sense in bringing on Rashford and Sancho just before the final whistle, it didn’t really work out that well. Once the disappointment and questions that need to be asked why drop off so much and where were Pickford and Grealish when the penalties were being dished out? fade away, remember the good times of this tournament. Go all the way back to last Wednesday at Wembley, for example, and how that felt. England, for so long accepting of players from foreign climes coming into their game and diving around, finally using the dark arts themselves to gain an advantage. Winning a penalty in that way is more difficult than ever given that you have to firstly convince the referee but also buy it in a way that the VAR cannot overturn. And to think Pep hardly picked you for the title run-in, Raheem - what does he know? And then there was the laser - I think

we can all agree that as the final went to penalties then Wembley should have been lit up like an Ibiza closing party. Did it stop Schmeichel saving the penalty? No! Should he have held on to such a weak effort from Kane? Yes!

Jose Mourinho didn’t like Southgate subbing Grealish off having only brought him on 35 minutes earlier. Jose, I think you are telling porky pies there, my friend. One - since when did you care about a player’s feelings? Two - this was Gareth bringing off an attacking player to throw on a defender to close out a match. You’re telling me this didn’t make you feel all tingly inside? Now all this Euros stuff is put to bed we can get on with the small matter of enjoying the utterly crazy transfer rumours that the tabloids make up to give them something to do. England hero Sterling is open to offers to leave Man City - but you can bet your bottom dollar he won’t be looking to take a step down and why should he? Peppy G has other ideas though and wants to lock Sterling down to another long-term deal. Kalvin Phillips is being lazily linked to random clubs but the Yorkshire Pirlo has no desire to leave Leeds and cannot wait for Bielsa to beast him in preseason training. Aston Villa still believe Arsenal might be stupid enough to sell them Emile Smith-Rowe. You can understand why they might think that, so Villa will continue to increase their bids until stupidity takes over. Arsenal might be distracted by the fact they’ve made an actual halfdecent signing in Nuno Tavares, a young Portuguese left-back. Yes, that does mean Arsenal’s last two intelligent signings have been leftbacks. The Gunners are still chasing notseen-at-the-Euros Ben White and are waving £50m under the noses of Brighton. However, that offer was not accepted last time and reports that it’s been accepted this time are wider of the mark than Dani Olmo’s penalty.

Las Ramblas Golf Society

Houssem Aouar is still being linked to Arsenal, just like he has been for the last five windows and Hector Bellerin would really like to move to Inter, just like has been rumoured for weeks now. Southampton would like to take Brandon Williams on loan from Manchester United and are prepared to pay his wages - if they have any left having signed Theo Walcott permanently following his release from Everton where he was earning £150k a week for being absolutely toilet. Barcelona are hawking many players around the Premier League sides as they need to cut their wage bill urgently - otherwise, they cannot reregister a certain Mr Messi if he does agree a new deal. Therefore, Antoine Griezmann’s CV is on the desks of City and Chelsea. If Arsenal and United get through the pile they’ll see Samuel Umtiti’s resume. Miralem Pjanic is being offered to Tottenham and they can frankly pay what they like. Leeds took the bait on Junior Firpo and signed him for around £10m - though you’d imagine Barca need to shift 15 Firpos to free up enough wage budget to sort Messi out. Everton have been contacted as well as someone suggested Rafa would like a bit of Clement Lenglet as a welcoming present just as long as he can ensure Moise Kean doesn’t return. Liverpool are still keen on Renato Sanches who seems to be a bit better than he was for Swansea and are also keen on Napoli midfielder Piotr Zielinski. You can add Atleti’s Saul Niguez and Wolves’ Adama Traore to

Pedro takes a tumble at Free Running! With our numbers deleted for various reasons (more in a minute) just 17 players took part in Monday’s ‘3-2-1 Dusty Bin’. With a score of 89 points our winners were Olga Douglas, Nigel Price, Ian Moir and Mike Chapman.

A quick ‘get well soon’ goes out to one of our members, Pete (Pedro) Dunn, who, whilst trying to rescue a distressed cat in his neighbour’s garden managed to fall off the top of the dividing wall! Nothing broken but plenty of bruises. Three players (and I was one of them) managed to score 37points in Wednesday’s Stableford and still not make

it into the top three. With 38 points and taking 2nd spot from Paul Brown on countback, was Lindsay Forbes. Mike Brentnall took the spoils with 39. Only two ‘2’s were carded on the day, Mike Chapman and……………Me!

A Texas Scramble was the format for the day on Friday. With a net score of 58 Friedel Knebel, Andy Martin, Anne Marie Weisheit and Heinz Lei were our winners. With a better gross score but finishing second on net 58.7 were Terry Field, Mike Mahony and Ken & Liz Robertson.

Klopp’s wanted list too. Liverpool’s list isn’t done there King Kloppo would also like Bayern’s Kingsley Coman and Dutchman Donyell Malan to freshen up his squad. Klopp does not want a reunion with Philippe Coutinho whereas Brendan Rodgers would - yes, another Barca player to get off the wage bill. Tottenham need to do bits and bits looks like Wolfsburg’s French defender Maxime Lacroix and Danish sensation Mikkel Damsgaard - though Leeds and Leicester are also sniffing around him. Nuno can expect to have Japanese defender Tommy Yasu in his squad when they get going, though. Tomiyasu is 22 and, apparently, pretty good. Which helps. It wouldn’t be rumours with Paul Pogba being linked with a move away from United - today, it’s PSG’s turn to pretend they might be interested. Gabby Jesus’ time at City must be coming to an end - I mean, imagine being a striker there and only scoring nine goals last season. Juventus would like to have him and defender Danilo has spent the Copa America talking up life in Turin. Having signed a new deal, Olivier Giroud is to be sold to AC Milan for £1.4m. Quite how he and Zlatan will get on remains to be seen. Finally, Arsenal have been lined up for the next Amazon “All or Nothing” documentary series - I’d get out now, Mikel. Whilst you still can.

Lo Crispin Summer Cup at Villamartin Abbey Anglers On Tuesday the 6th of July we fished the El bosquet complex at Crevillente. Fifteen anglers took part on what turned out to be the hottest day of the year with temperatures in the high thirties. It really does get quite dangerous in these conditions but if you are sensible and use an Umbrella and drink plenty of water then you can carry on fishing. Winner on the day was myself Ian Brown. I was drawn on peg 26 and caught in the region of 50 small carp for 27.83kg. I fished pellet in the deep water across at 14m on the pole until the wind got up and I was then forced to fish the feeder over the same spot. Second was Neil McBernie from peg 38 for 24.64kg. He again fished pellet on the pole but up in the water. Third was Alan Priest who was drawn on the other side of the complex on peg 3. He fished the feeder to take lots of carp and mullet for 22.70kg. Other section winners included Dave Sutcliffe with 18.78kg and Mick Hill with 15.90kg. The pairs match was won by Neil and Alan Priest with 47.34kg. Special thanks go out to all the staff at Cafe Uno in Catral, who provided some great food for us after the match. Rods N Reels The following day we made the

short trip to the Rio Segura at Murcia Town Centre. Hopes were high after last weeks great weights but the fishing was not great. Personally I think this was due to alterations in the flow of the river which they control via a series of sluice gates etc. This can dramatically effect how the fish feed. Winner once again was Neil McBernie, draw at the crystal bridge end he caught carp on the pellet for 12.64kg. He was closely followed by Nick Bastock on the next peg with 12.56kg and in 3rd place was Terry Screen with 7.62kg. The pairs match was won convincingly by Nick and Neil. Special credit should also go out

to one of the competitors, who shall remain nameless, but he is a former English international fly fisherman. He passed me before the match had started on foot, on his way to McDonalds nearby to use the toilet facilities following a dodgy curry the night before. Sadly he never made it and after and initial clean up operation in the carpark he returned home a 90 minute round trip. He came back all ship shape and Bristol fashion about 2 hours later after a shower and change of clothing and started fishing the match. Further details can be found on our Website abbeyangling.es Ian Brown

Following a number of late cancellations, 25 members (including 1 playing for handicap) and 4 guests ‘teed it up’ on 7th. July to compete for our Summer Cup. It was some relief that it was not as hot as the previous couple of days. The course was generally in good condition and the greens were also generally good and quick. The majority of scores were quite good, considering the heat. After the game as is customary we returned to the Lo Crispin Tavern, where we were supplied with Tapas by the helpful and friendly staff and the day’s prizes distributed. As we were playing for one of our ‘Major’s’ there were no divisional prizes. 1st. Place and winner of the Summer Cup - Mike Ellson 31 pts off 23 2nd. Place - Bill Croft 30 pts. off 18 (on count back) 3rd. Place - John Bailey 30 pts. off 27 4th. Place - Mike Johnson 27 pts. off 5 N.T. P. on Par 3s Hole 6 - Graham Ellis Hole 9 - Richard Brady Hole 13 - Eddie Kirby

Hole 17 - Mike Ellson The Guest and those playing for handicap prize was won by Eddie Kirby with 29 pts. off 18. Mike Ellson’s day was made even better as he shared the 2’s pot with Steve King, with each receiving 51.5 euros. Finally, the Free game Draw was won by one of our Committee members, Ian Matson. Our next game is at Alenda on the 21st. July when we will be playing for the Anniversary Trophy. Steve Harrington. (Membership and Handicap Secretary)
