They came, they saw, they rocked

More than 300 people joined forces at the emerald isle, la Florida, on Friday to fight cancer. the event was organised by ‘Rock against Cancer’ and saw an

afternoon of entertainment with artists rocking it up for the crowd. the music festival was hosted by Stevie Spit and lucinda o’Connell and

funds were raised through donations, a prize raffle, merchandise sales and the emerald isle gave 50 percent of the €2 per person entry free to the cause. All of the money will go to Alicante para la lucha Contra el Cancer and Afecancer to be used for the benefit of local people. €3,007 was raised on Friday. neil Wyatt, Rock against Cancer, said: “ensuring the money is used locally is key for us. the charities we work with offer free screening and support for families. every penny we raise goes into the local community.” the event started in style with a parade of classic motorbikes and harleys and the atmosphere was definitely one of fun in the sun as local residents sang and chair-danced to the likes of Aces high, dreamgirls,

Flashback, Alex tipping, Carla Stone, nikki G, leroy Morales, Bella luna, natural Mystic and Funky Binders. Many of the artists worked for free and Carla Stone also donated money from the most recent Matrix Studio production. Brendan Moran, emerald isle said: “We have a unique and popular venue here at the emerald isle. every outside table is booked and we are delighted to be able to host the event and support the local community.” Rock against Cancer was founded in 2009 as an annual musical concert dedicated to raising funds and awareness about cancer, with a special focus on helping local people and individual sufferers.

the first event was the brainchild of Monroe’s Rock Cafe Pub owners neil and nigel Wyatt, torrevieja’s oldest theme Pub, to celebrate their 20th Anniversary. Further events in the historic and ionic eras de la Sal were to follow along with two street parties. however, the pandemic saw large crowd events restricted and the Rock against Cancer (RaC) had to change from one annual large concert to taking the concept out to smaller venues across the local communities. to allow RaC to give all funds raised to anti-cancer charities, it relies on sponsorship to cover any basic costs such as sound, lighting or expenses for Continued on page 3

GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP Reaching its highest level against the euro since April, the pound has been bolstered by a few good news stories this week. the majority of restrictions will be lifted in the uK next week – we had to wait for Scotland, Wales and northern ireland to also confirm they’re following suit. the speed of the uK vaccination programme has supported sterling against the euro and the uS dollar this year. As the majority of uK adults are now jabbed with their first dose, it’ll be interesting to see how sterling, and other majors responds. it’s also important to note that the uK government has struck a cautious tone in that Covid cases are extremely likely to continue rising across the summer, prepping investors for the possibility of choppy waters ahead. outside of football and freedom day which dominated the headlines, there was little to affect sterling in political or economic terms. the only economic statistic was the British Retail Consortium’s like-for-like retail sales measure. the report spoke of “exceptional growth… growing consumer confidence and the continued unleashing of consumer demand”. uK employment numbers released this week show the number of job vacancies has surpassed those of pre-pandemic levels. in the three months to June, the onS said there were 862,000 jobs on offer, 77,500 higher than in the first three months of 2020, before Covid-19 hit uK shores. however, such statistics are being

met with caution, as the number of workers on payroll remained 206,000 below pre-pandemic levels. Vacancies in hospitality and retailing, arguably some of the hardest hit industries, are driving up the numbers of open job roles. EURO eurozone industrial Production dropped by 1% in May, which was not was expected with economists polled by the Wall Street Journal forecasting a 0.1% drop. the suggestion is that the manufacturing sector could be losing its recovery momentum. output from factories, mines and utilities across May fell, with the blame being laid at the feet of supply chain disruptions. despite this, the euro didn’t really wobble, propped up against the uS dollar after Powell’s testimony. Speeches by a couple of central bankers were unilluminating. european Central Bank Vice President luis de Guindos played the quintessential two-handed economist role, explaining that “predictions can be right, but also can be wrong”. over last weekend, european Central Bank President Christine lagarde expanded on some of the changes to eCB policy. in light of the change to the inflation target from “just below but close to 2%” to “2%”, Ms lagarde said she would update the guidance on the direction of monetary policy. For the avoidance of doubt, she said that now is not the time to be talking about any winddown of asset purchases under the Pandemic emergency Purchase Programme (PePP).

Police clampdown on ‘Pirate Taxis’ at Alicante airport

increased activity and more flights at Alicante-elche airport has prompted the Policia local in elche to step up the number of inspections on taxi drivers and bus drivers at the terminal. As well as assuring accredited taxis and VtCs (chauffer driven cars) are working within the law, police say their biggest challenge is finding ‘pirate’ taxi drivers – those who transport passengers for a fee but pose as relatives to avoid detection. For licensed taxis, police watch for taxis arriving at the airport with their green light on – they are not allowed to arrive to the terminal soliciting a fare, their services must be booked in advance. they also check that the taxi drivers have not illegally changed the rate charged mid journey, that the meter has not been interfered with and that the driver has all the relevant documentation to hand. Within elche’s local police department, between three and five officers at any one time are in charge of ensuring that vehicles entering the airport terminal have documentation in order and

comply with regulations. local taxis, say police, are quite good at following the regulations but taxis from further afield, Murcia for example, don’t always know what is required of them. VtCs have to follow different rules, for example they must carry a contract that proves they have been employed by the passenger. Police must try to verify that the service has been booked in advance and that the VtCs are not trying to solicit business at the terminal. identifying pirate taxis is the most challenging and for this, police say they rely on their instincts. the pirate taxis, say police, are usually not Spanish and advertise their services on the internet. Police observe travellers to see if they seem to be posing as family or friends, they watch to see if cash is changing hands etc. in such cases, the passenger and driver will be questioned by police about their relationship to see if their story matches. if the arrangement is deemed illegal, the vehicle is impounded and the driver can face fines of up to €4000.

Euromillons windfall in Torrevieja one lucky player scooped up €1,000,000 in the euromillions in torrevieja. the ticket was bought at lottery Administration no. 5 of torrevieja, “el Conejo de oro”, located inside the Carrefour commercial centre. the ticket, bought for Friday’s draw, matched the extra code number which bagged the bonus prize called the ‘million’, guaranteeing the winner a cool one million euro. the winning combination drawn was 5, 16, 42, 47 and 49, lucky stars 3 and 11 and the “Million” code QCB02838. no one won the main jackpot so today (tuesday) the draw is worth €26 million.

Torrevieja beach ‘race’ goes viral

A video of people jostling for the best spot on the beach in torrevieja has gone viral. the recording shows a calm, empty beach before it opens for the day and pans to a queue of beachgoers waiting in a line to access the sand. once the attendant gives the go ahead that the beach is now open, people run, jostle and push their way to the front, some skipping the queue and leaping from the promenade to stake a claim on a plot. What’s even more surprising is that the images were recorded at 7am. With current restrictions in place, there have been days when the beach – Playa del Cura in torrevieja – has been closed to further visitors due to being full. this has prompted early queues and this bizarre Grand national type spectacle.

Street party shut down by police Police in torrevieja shut down a gathering of around 1000 youngsters on Friday night. Police described the event as a mega botellón – botellón (pronounced [boteh-yawn]; Spanish for “big bottle”) is the word used when people congregate in public areas to socialize while drinking alcohol. At around 2.20am police were called to the natural swimming pools on torrevieja seafront where officers reported that around 1000 youngsters had gathered to drink and socialise. local police and Guardia Civil arrived to break up the party which was done quickly and without any resistance. however, local residents claim that gatherings of youngsters drinking along the paseo and pier at night time has become commonplace in recent weeks. So much so that opposition party Compromís has called for CCtV to be used to control and prevent these gatherings, especially in light of the global pandemic.

Alicante based mega hacker appears in court A ukranian hacker who is believed to have stolen millions while based out of his home in Alicante has appeared in court this week. denis Katana pleaded guilty to a series of computer crimes, infecting banking systems around the globe, for which he will serve four and a half years in prison. the court heard that Katana was the mastermind behind a malicious computer programme which, from his home in Alicante, he used to infect computers of banks across the world, allowing him to control AtMs remotely and instruct the machines to dispense money. in this way, and using money ‘mules’ Katana is believed to have been behind the theft of millions of euro. the money was then laundered by using it to buy bitcoin, the cyber currency. Katana, real name denis tokarenco, was sentenced to three years in prison for computer fraud, six months for belonging to a criminal organisation, six months for falsifying public documents and six months for money laundering. he is also required to pay a fine of six million euro. his partner is being sentenced to six months in prison and fined

€300,000 for money laundering. Katana’s arrest is the result of a three and a half year long investigation tracking a cyber theft gang called Carbanak. once europol realised the cyber criminals had such a global reach, they enlisted help from authorities across the world including Spain, which led to Katana’s arrest. two money mules arrested in taiwan in 2016 led authorities to Alicante when

one of the men’s seized phones revealed a string of emails with a man in Alicante who appeared to be in charge of the operation. Police surveillance on Katana revealed that he didn’t appear to live a lavish lifestyle in an apartment with his wife and child. he rarely if ever visited the nearby beach and often worked through the night on his laptop, using overseas servers for most of his computer activity which, although not illegal, police marked as unusual. detectives investigating the

cyber fraud described 34 year old Katana as an ‘artist’, saying, “this guy is in another league, he’s like Rafa nadal playing tennis. there are few people in the world capable of doing what he did.” in early 2018, Spanish police arrested Katana and seized computers and other evidence as well as jewellery, two BMWs. they also found 15,000 bitcoins – then valued at around €137 million. Katana was able to access bank computers by sending emails to bank employees. From the outside, the emails appeared to be from genuine suppliers that worked with the bank and so, the employees often opened them, unleashing sophisticated malware onto the bank’s internal computer system. Spending months studying the internal nuances of the bank’s system, the gang was then able to – often without raising alarm – move money, inflate balances and control AtMs remotely, ordering the machines to dispense money at a prearranged time when money mules would be waiting with a bag to collect the cash. in Spain, Santander and Sabadell banks were both targeted.

Help Vega Baja needs a handy man After supporting people for more than 40 years within the Vega Baja community, the charity helP Vega Baja is putting out a request for some help for itself! the charity contacted the Costa Blanca People to say that it has a project it needs help with. President, Michele Masson said: “one of the areas we support people is by providing information and advice when they are experiencing difficult times. this can involve some very emotional conversations which are not appropriate to be held in an open office. “Although we frequently make

ourselves available outside normal opening times at our San Miguel Centre, we have seen a definite increase in the number of occasions when visitors need to speak with us in private – perhaps to simply listen to them or to offer emotional support. We would very much like to have a private facility to be able to offer this service. “A small area has been identified in our centre at San Miguel which would be ideal, with a little refurbishment, to meet these needs. “Sadly however, covid restrictions mean that our fundraising events have been

put on hold. We are therefore putting out a plea for a builder or handyman who would be prepared to offer their time and expertise to work on this project with us. We would put aside funds for materials required. We appreciate that this is a ‘big ask”’ but this project would not only help the charity but would most importantly, be a tremendous support for people within the community.” if you think you can help with this must needed work, please call Richard Garland (Charity Secretary) on 966 723 733 or email office@helpvegabaja.com

Orihuela Costa excluded from investment package orihuela Costa was completely excluded from a package of 9.5m euro investments approved by a special meeting of the town hall plenary last thursday. this is a huge disappointment for orihuela Costa which lacks so many facilities and services. the coast is showing signs of major abandonment with rubbish accumulating in the streets, streets in bad state of repair, no second health centre, no cultural centre and an emergency services centre which is still not completed after 10 years of delay. the 9.5m euro investment package will be dedicated exclusively to projects in the City, restoring a series of historic buildings and improving the historic centre. A spokesperson for local political party ClARo said: “the money was taken from funds left over which have not been mobilised because of tensions between the governing coalition of Popular Party and Ciudadanos and their inability to agree a general budget to replace the 2018 budget which is still the basis for government expenditure although increasingly out of date and unsuited to current needs. ironically, a significant part of the €9.5m is the result of the sale of municipal land on the coast.” Furthermore, dedicating the entire sum of 9.5m to the City breaks with a principle that orihuela Costa should

receive 40 percent of investments to make up for the acknowledged historic deficit in funding for the coast. despite the origin of the funds, the acknowledged needs of the coast and the break with the 40 percent principle, the decision to dedicate the entire sum to the City is not entirely unexpected and conforms to the pattern of what local residents see as discrimination against orihuela Costa which is a constant feature of the politics of orihuela municipality. What was unexpected in the decision at the Plenary Meeting, however, was that it was voted for by the Popular Party, the principal party of the governing coalition and the opposition Socialist party PSoe. Ciudadanos, the junior party in the governing coalition voted against arguing that the measures did not apply in an equitable manner to the whole of the municipality. they detailed a series of measures which they said should have been included and which would have benefitted the coast. however, ClARo

and other political commentators think this was just a smokescreen to hide their embarrassment for having been ditched by the Popular Party who preferred to cut a deal with the PSoe. it does look as though the tensions between the Popular Party and Ciudadanos are reaching crisis level and the two major orihuela parties, the PP and PSoe, may be out to kill off the orihuela Ciudadanos party which has recently suffered a catastrophic loss of support nationally and in many regions of Spain. infighting between the orihuela based parties which may go on until the next municipal elections in May, 2023 is not a promising prospect for the interests of orihuela Costa.

Two years in jail for collecting dead mother’s pension for 16 years A man pleaded guilty to defrauding Spain’s Social Security system of more than 91,000 euro. the Alicante man stood accused of improperly collecting his mother’s pension for 16 years after her death and sentenced this week to two years in prison. the defendant pleaded guilty after an agreement was reached between his lawyers and the prosecution. According the Prosecutor’s

office, the defendant shared ownership of a current account in the now defunct Caja de Ahorros del Mediterráneo with his mother. Since July 2013, the bank became Banco Sabadell and the man’s mother received a widow’s pension there. on January 13, 2001, the mother died, but the accused did not report her death to the General treasury of Social Security with the intention of appropriating “the pension illegitimately”.

From January 2001 until April 2017, the man withdrew his dead mother’s pension, a sum of around 450 per month which over 16 years amounted to 91,907 euro. of the money, the Social Security has already recovered almost 24,000 euros and there are still almost 68,000 euros to be paid back by Banco Sabadell itself due to civil liability. As well as the prison terms, the accused must pay a fine of 1,800 euros.

Chemists now selling Covid self-test kits Self-testing kits for Covid-19 will be on sale in pharmacies across Spain from today – tuesday 20th July - without prescription, health minister Carolina darías has announced. until now, Covid tests could be purchased from pharmacies subject to availability, but only with a prescription, meaning that in most cases, patients would simply be tested at the GP practice or hospital which would have prescribed them. otherwise, there was no way of an ordinary member of the public who was not a known contact and had no symptoms could carry out a ‘peace of mind’ test, apart from going to a private clinic where the price was likely to be prohibitive. Selling antigen and antibody tests over the counter will allow suspect cases, including those with no symptoms, to be detected ‘far more quickly’, says Sra darías, who recalls that most of those currently testing positive are aged approximately 12 to 29 and, in the main, asymptomatic. high-street pharmacies will be allowed to advertise the availability of test kits to buy, and to sell them without

prescription – something they have been clamouring to be able to do for months. Antigen and antibody tests give fast results – in 10 to 30 minutes – and are much cheaper than a PCR, although the latter is strongly recommended for anyone with symptoms or strongly suspected of being positive, since they provide more detailed information about the viral structure, enabling them to be treated effectively. the fast-track, cheaper tests serve mainly as peace of mind for people who merely want to ‘prove they are negative’ – such as before visiting an elderly or immune-compromised family member or friend. As they can be used at home and are easy to read, they do not need to be sent off to a laboratory and do not require the intervention of a medical professional – thus easing the pressure on the State health service. they are generally reliable not as much as a PCR, but only a negligible number of false positives have been recorded, and false negatives are even more rare. Antibody tests do not detect

active infection, but reveal to what extent virus-fighting properties in the blood have been generated – for those who have not been vaccinated, it will tell them whether or not they have already had Covid, since this is the only way a non-immunised person would acquire antibodies. Some countries in europe are already selling Covid tests in pharmacies and, in a few cases, even in supermarkets. France, Germany, Austria, the netherlands, Belgium, italy and Portugal have been selling them over the counter or in supermarkets for some time. in Portugal, customers pay between €7 and €10 for an antigen test, and in Belgium, about €7 or €8, whilst in France, they are much cheaper, with a State-regulated price of €5.20. Germany sells self-diagnosis tests in supermarkets, ranging from €5 to €10, and they can even be bought in multipacks. Aldi stores in Germany sell packs of five test kids for €25.99, and lidl retails them for €21.99. At time of going to print the price which they will be on sale at in Spain had not been revealed.

5 THINGS TO DO, BEFORE LISTING YOUR PROPERTY FOR SALE! if you’ve been thinking about selling your property, you’re probably ready to pick up your phone and call your local Real estate Agent. But before making that call, here’s 5 things to make sure your property is ready to be listed for sale: 1. Find your “escritura de Compraventa” (title deeds) 2. have a copy of your utility bills to hand 3. Make a copy of your tie card / Residencia or n.i.e. Certificate 4. Prepare the property for sale (declutter, Repair, Paint) 5. Call your chosen Real estate Agent! When choosing your ideal Real estate Agent remember this… not all estate Agents are alike! the Real estate professional you choose to represent your home sale will absolutely make or break the deal. is the agent you choose one who will be passive or proactive? is this individual a true Real estate Professional, or just someone selling houses part

time? the answer will make the difference between failure and suc-cess for you. don’t make the mistake of choosing someone based on personality or likability. Choose a Real estate professional who is aut-hentically focused on the success of your home being sold. Any agent can stick a sign in your garden, take pictures and write and negotiate contracts. But so much more than mundane activities go into a successful and profitable sale, especially during a pandemic! Be realistic. We all want as much as we can get for our home, however some agents will blind you with a promise of a higher selling figure. this is a common strategy for a novice agent. however the more established agents know this strategy only works to encourage you to list your property for sale with them. Be careful as they’ll be wanting you to reduce your price later or encourage you to take a cheeky offer. Price will ultimately determine how long or how quick your property will take to sell. the best professional succeeds by telling you the truth about what needs to be done to move the sale along successfully instead of only telling you what you want to hear. A strong success record equals a strong agent. To check you have all papers required to sell your property, head to www. SellingInSpain.com to download a complimentary list!

Moon wobble predicted to cause mass flooding A nASA study has revealed how a ‘wobble’ in the Moon’s orbit could cause devastating flooding in the 2030s. Research led by the uS space agency predicts cities along the country’s coast could see three or four times as many high-tide flood days annually for a decade. the Moon’s gravitational pull impacts tidal forces on earth. A known ‘wobble’ in it’s orbit combined with rising sea levels could see some extreme tides, according to concerned researchers. nasa’s study about the potential problem has been published online in the journal nature Climate Change. it warns that coastal cities all over the world could see extra flood days clustered together over a few months in the year. it means places that face a few floods a month could face dozens more. this could have devastating impacts for people living along coastlines. lead study author Phil thompson, an assistant professor at the university of hawaii, said: “it’s the accumulated effect over time that will have an impact. if it floods 10 or 15 times a month, a business can’t keep operating with its parking lot under water.

People lose their jobs because they can’t get to work. Seeping cesspools become a public health issue.” the study notes how sea level rise connected to climate change is already causing issues. the scientists are worried that rising sea levels coupled with a ‘wobble’ in the Moon’s orbit that’s already been observed could be a dangerous combination.

the Moon is said to wobble on a 18.6-year cycle and that changes its positioning to earth ever so slightly. this slight change can amplify or suppress tides depending on where the Moon is in its cycle, according to nasa.

the tide-amplifying part of the Moon cycle is currently happening now and the next one is set to happen in the mid 2030s. the researchers think by the mid 2030s, sea levels could have risen so much that amplified tides could cause major issues. they think this could cause rapid flooding across the entire uS coast and flooding will change “from a regional issue to a national issue with a majority of uS coastlines being affected.” As the extreme tidal events are only expected to happen in monthly clusters, the researchers think there would be time to prepare for them. Study co-author and nasa scientist Ben hamlington said: “understanding that all your events are clustered in a particular month, or you might have more severe flooding in the second half of a year than the first - that’s useful information.” Since 1880, average sea levels across the globe have risen about 8 to 9 inches. Around a third of that rise is said to have happened over the past 25 years and sea levels are predicted to rise even more in the next decade.

Should you move your pensions into one pot? By Sam Kelly Senior Partner Chorus Financial

if you’ve had more than one job since your career begun, it’s likely you’ve got pensions with different providers. it can be difficult to keep track of them all, and there’s a chance your money could end up in expensive, poorly performing funds as a result. So, should you consider transferring them all into one easy-to-manage pension plan? here are five reasons you might want to think about it: 1. More convenience it’s much easier to manage one pension than half a dozen. Rather than have to check values with a number of pension providers and schemes, you only have to deal

with one. 2. Greater control Bringing your pensions under one roof can also give you greater control. For example, perhaps one of your old pensions has limited investment choices. transferring to a single pension could let you cast off these shackles and take greater control. that doesn’t mean you have to pick your own investments if you don’t want to, you can appoint a local adviser to manage your pension plan for you. As with most investments, the value of pensions can go down as well as up, so you can get back less than has been paid in.

3. Appoint a local adviser uK based pensions will often only allow uK based advisers to manage them. this can leave people who live outside the uK in a position where some or all of their pensions limit them to seeking local advice. Moving all of your pensions into one place, could also mean moving them into a product such as an international SiPP which will allow a local financial adviser to manage them on your behalf. 4. Potentially lower costs older pensions sometimes have higher charges, so transferring to a modern one could reduce the cost of administration and fund management. And even a seemingly small reduction in the charges you pay could increase your eventual pension pot by a significant amount in the long term. 5. Easier to track and switch it can be easier to track and switch your investments if they’re in one place. Modern pensions allow you to look online to see where your pension fund is invested and how

it’s performing. you can follow your progress and use online tools to see if you’re on the right track for a comfortable retirement. But don’t dive in without looking first As you can see, there can be several advantages to consolidating your pensions, depending on your circumstances. however, it’s important to be aware that transferring pensions isn’t right for everyone, and there’s no guarantee that you’ll be better off by doing so. Before transferring, it’s important to check your current pension/s to make sure you won’t miss out on any valuable benefits or guarantees as a result – and to check you won’t incur any excessive exit fees. An adviser at Chorus Financial will be able to help you with all this. if you have several pensions and you would like some advice on consolidating them, call Chorus today on 965 641 163, email info@ chorusfinancial.es or visit www. chorusfinancial.es.

Investment contracts are intended as medium to long term investments, and all investments have some level of risk. Figures in our articles are examples of what can be achieved and cannot be guaranteed; the value of your investments can go down as well as up. Fees and charges can vary and will be fully explained to you before any advice can take place. This article should not be considered as investment advice or a recommendation of any particular product.

Your tech questions answered by Brian Hoile of the Costa Blanca Technology Help Group, helping over 200 members with their PCs, smartphones and more. Find the group on Facebook (Costa Blanca Technology Help Group) or attend the meetings in person or online via Zoom. John from Alicante asked “what are my options to get UK TV in Spain”. to watch uK tV while in Spain there are various options available. 1. Satellite dish - dependent on where you are you will need a Satellite dish of 1.20 to 2.4 metres in diameter. Check with neighbours to see what size dish they have or do a Google search for the size of dish required in your area. 2. Rebroadcast TV - Various companies available that rebroadcast uK tV using their own hardware. you normally pay for installation and then pay a monthly subscription. usually there is a contract period you have to agree to. 3. Smart TV - connected to the internet either by ethernet cable or WiFi. When setting up a Smart tV initially in Spain give your location as uK. this will give you Apps aimed at a uK audience. download and install BBC

iPlayer, itV hub, All 4 and My5. you will need to register with each of these with an email address and a password. it’s a good idea to use the same password for each. in order to use these in Spain you will need to use a VPn. A VPn (Virtual Private network) allows you to connect to the internet and mask your location. you can therefore now use all the uK tV Apps.

4. Non Smart TV - you can make a non Smart tV act like a Smart tV by connecting an Android tV Box or Amazon Fire Stick. you will need WiFi internet and a spare hdMi Port on the tV. on your selected device you can download the uK tV Apps and VPn. IPTV - internet Protocol television (iPtV) is the delivery of

television content over internet Protocol (iP) networks. this is in contrast to delivery through traditional terrestrial, satellite, and cable television formats. unlike downloaded media, iPtV offers the ability to stream the source media continuously. IPTV Hardware to watch iPtV you need a suitableinternet connected device. this can be PC, laptop, Smartphone, tablet, Android tV Box, Amazon Fire Stick, Mag Box. you will then need the required iPtV Apps downloaded and installed. Perform a Google search and look for the required iPtV Apps. Again to watch uK specific output (BBC iPlayer etc) you will need to search for and download and install and subscribe to a suitable VPn.Subscription services are available for Fire Stick and Mag Box that offer access to uK channels and Catch up. For more information and detail on available options to watch uK tV in Spain join the technology help Group.

Road improvements start in La Regia

Ángel noguera, Councillor for infrastructures for orihuela City Council, has reported the start of the tarmac and steel works in la Regia in orihuela Costa. “it is an urbanisation that is more than 35 years old and so the materials used are in poor condition and much of the urbanisation’s road have never been updated. Some adhoc repairs have been carried out mainly due to improvements in the drinking water service, public lighting or other networks,” said the Councillor. Some streets do not comply with the current regulatory conditions for accessibility, and are difficult for vehicles to navigate. the pavements have been invaded by trees,

preventing people from walking safely. there are poorly executed access points to homes, a lack of signage for parking and there are no directional road signs or pedestrian crossings. Work will be carried out on

the streets isla Cabrera, isla dragonera, isla Sardinia, isla Córcega and isla Formentera, with the approximate total area of the new road resurfacing

being 18,370 m². the works consist of a substantial improvement in pedestrian accessibility, as well as better pavements and road resurfacing. trees that are damaging the pavements will be replaced to minimise future issues and new signage will be installed. Finally, Ángel noguera clarified that “once the high summer season is over, these works will continue but focus on la Zenia, specifically in Carrer del Carmen, Avda. las Palmeras and Calle Colón. the total approximate surface area of the programme on the roads of the la Zenia urbanization is 18,245 m². With the sum of both works totalling 440,175 euros (including VAt).

This Week´s Movie Picks The Hiitmans Bodyguard

Saturday 24th July – Channel 4, 10.00 pm With his reputation in tatters after the painfully unsuccessful delivery of a distinguished Japanese client, the former triple-A protection agent, Michael Bryce, is now reduced to a mere second-class bodyguard for hire, two years after the disgraceful incident. under those circumstances, Bryce would do anything to prove his worth, and, before long, he accepts an offer from interpol to escort the international assassin, darius Kincaid, from Manchester to the hague. the task seems simple: Bryce needs to transport him from point A to point B; nevertheless, the trip to the netherlands is long and hazardous, and Kincaid--as the only one with the guts and enough hard evidence to testify against a tyrannical Belarusian dictator--is an obvious target. undoubtedly, it’s a tough job, as the mismatched duo will have to put aside their grudges, and race against the clock in a nonstop concerto for bullets. Can the hitman’s bodyguard carry through the most important mission in his career?

Cold Pursuit

Sunday 25th July – Channel 5, 10.00 pm Quiet family man and hardworking snowplow driver nels is the lifeblood of a glitzy resort town in the Rocky Mountains because he is the one who keeps the winter roads clear. he and his wife live in a comfortable cabin away from the tourists. the town has just awarded him “Citizen of the year.” But nels has to leave his quiet mountain life when his son is murdered by a powerful drug lord. As a man who has nothing to lose he is stoked by a drive for vengeance. this unlikely hero uses his hunting skills and transforms from an ordinary man into a skilled killer as he sets out to dismantle the cartel. nels’ actions ignite a turf war between a manically unpredictable gangster known as Viking and a rival gang boss. Justice is served in one final spectacular confrontation that will leave (almost) no one unscathed.

Grupo Telecable, much more than telecommunications

The best service for their customers

This is how their history starts…

From that moment, they have grown steadily and responsibly to reach where they are now, Grupo Telecable. They currently offer their services in the majority of the Alicante

region and some areas of Murcia. They connect thousands of customers in Denia, El Altet, Arenales del Sol, Gran Alacant, Santa Pola, La Marina, Campo de Elche, Guardamar, San Luis – La Siesta – El Chaparral – El Dorado – El Limonar – Punta La Vívora – El Salado – Torretas – Torrevieja – La Zenia – Los Dolses – Villamartín – Las Filipinas – Los Montesinos – Orihuela Costa – La Mata, Los Alcázares and Camposol. Alcohol could be behind one in 25 cancers globally Drinking too much alcohol may be behind one in 25 new cancers around the world every year, a study has claimed. An international team of experts estimate 741,300 diagnoses, or 4 per cent of new cancer cases in 2020, could be attributed to heavy and moderate drinking. The analysis - which looked at alcohol sales and medical records in 240 countries found the majority of cases linked to alcohol were cancers of the oesophagus, liver, and breast. Britain ranked mid-table in the global analysis, with 4 per cent of cancer cases in the country linked to alcohol consumption (16,800). Mongolia topped the chart, where consuming too much booze was linked to nearly one in ten cancers, and Moldova where it may have been behind one in twelve. Kuwait, where all alcohol is banned, had the lowest number of cancer cases linked to alcohol consumption. The authors admitted their study wasn’t able to look at the impact of the pandemic on drinking rates. Numerous studies have shown alcohol consumption rates went up during lockdown and more cancers were missed. The research, published in

The Lancet Oncology, used alcohol sales data from 2010 and, assuming a 10 year latency period between consumption and diagnosis, then combined this with cancer incidence in 2020. Researchers drew on data from the World Health Organization’s Global Cancer Observatory, which measure

cases of cancer across the world. Globally, men were found to be more likely to get cancer as a result of drinking, accounting for an estimated 77 per cent of all the cases in the study, with women making up the remaining 23 per cent. Adults are advised not to drink more than 14 units of alcohol a week on a regular basis. Half a pint of lower to mid strength beer, lager or cider (3.6 per cent strength) is one unit of alcohol

while a small 125ml glass of wine is 1.5 units. If adults drink as much as 14 units a week they are advised to spread this evenly over three or more days. While risky and heavy drinking contributed to the majority of the global cancer cases, the authors found that even moderate drinking, the equivalent of about two glasses of wine or two pints of lager a day, accounted for 14 per cent of all cases, about 103,100 cases. ‘Risky’ drinking was defined as two to three pints of lager per day or two to five small glasses of red wine. Heavy drinking was more than four pints a day or more than five small glasses of wine. The study authors called for greater public awareness of the link between alcohol and cancers and increased government interventions to reduce alcohol consumption. Previous studies have linked alcohol consumption to a variety of cancers, including in the throat, liver, breast and colon. Alcohol causes damage to the human body’s DNA through increased production of harmful chemicals and also affects the body’s hormone production which can contribute to cancer development.

Natural hangover remedies

If you’re waking up full of regret for overdoing it last night, medication can be tempting. But if you’d prefer to avoid pharmaceuticals, there are natural solutions to try for the dreaded hangover. Ginger has long been used in Chinese medicine as an antinausea measure, so a cup of ginger tea the morning after a heavy night could be a cheap way of hitting two birds with one stone. You’ll be replenishing some of that much-needed water, and also getting an important shot of stomachcalming ginger. When it comes to getting ginger to taste good, add one to two teaspoons of ginger powder or sliced fresh root, half a lemon and two teaspoons of honey to a teapot and fill with boiling water. Leave it to brew for five minutes before serving. Tea is well and good, but eating is also vital, though, with alcohol consumption hitting your blood glucose levels hard. Cliché would dictate that you tuck into the greasiest full English available, but experts warn against this. Instead, granola with sliced fruit can give you a hit of natural sugars and also get you some valuable vitamins as a bonus. Foods containing potassium can help your body to recover lost electrolytes from a night of drinking. Bananas and avocados

climbing by 26 percent, in comparison to sales of red wine (15 percent) and white wine (12 percent). What’s more, blush cider is seeing growth of 49 percent year-on-year, with sparkling rosé seeing a boost of 38 percent in comparison to just 5 percent of sparkling white wine sales. Now should this new flavour sound a bit much for you, don’t panic as you can get a bottle of Pimm’s Number 1 from Amazon for just £10. Another flavour from Pimm’s that you might want to try this summer or over the weekend is the Pimm’s Elderflower & Blackberry priced at £29.99 from Amazon.

are good sources. It may be the simplest cure, but water is still one of the most effective. Even relatively light drinking leads to dehydration. This, in turn, can cause the headaches, fatigue and lack of energy that so many of us associate with hangovers. When you wake up feeling

rough, drinking a glass of water should be on the top of your todo list. ....and sleep! There really is no substitute for sleep, and alcohol can seriously damage the quality and quantity of our shut eye. So make sure to schedule in an afternoon nap - and don’t forget an early night.

Cadbury’s facts... so you think you know chocolate Cadbury chocolate is some of the best chocolate in the world, and that’s not surprising considering it’s been around for years. Practice makes perfect, and all that... Cadbury was founded by John Cadbury 1. John Cadbury founded Cadbury back in 1824. It started life as a humble grocery store in Birmingham, in which John started making drinking chocolate by hand and selling it as a health drink – it was often served with lentils or barleys mixed into it.

on the heels of a new trends report, The Drinks Dispatch 2.0; Drink Pink, which explores just how much sales of pink beverages are currently booming. The report reveals the true scale at which we love to rosé all day - however, the question on everyone’s lips remains - why pink? The research went on to find that pink-tinted alcohol keeps spirits high for almost half of millennials aged 25-34, with 49 percent saying that sipping on pink drinks actually puts them in a better mood. Sales of pink drinks on the whole are on the up across Europe; rosé wine sales are

2. The first Cadbury factory opened in 1841 Eventually, John opened a Cadbury factory 17 years after starting his original business. By the following year, he was selling 11 different types of cocoa and 16 different varieties of drinking chocolate. 3. Cadbury solid chocolate was invented to use up leftovers The Cadbury chocolate we know and love these days only became a thing when John was looking for a way of using up the cocoa butter left over from the cocoa-making process. Can you imagine a world without Cadbury Dairy Milk?! 4. Cadbury made chocolates for royalty In 1855, John and his brother Benjamin – who was also his business partner – received a Royal Warrant to assume the role

of “manufacturers of cocoa and chocolate to Queen Victoria”. Today, the company continues to hold a Royal Warrant from Queen Elizabeth II. 5. Cadbury was the first company to use heart-shaped boxes You know all those soppy heart-shaped chocolate boxes...well, Cadbury was the first company to use them to showcase its chocolates. Founder John’s son, Richard, actually came up with the idea, and from 1861, Cadbury chocolates were sold for Valentine’s Day in heart-shaped boxes covered in cupids and roses. The idea was that the recipient could use the box to store keepsakes long after all the chocolate had been devoured. 6. More than 350 million bars of Dairy Milk are sold every year … that’s approximately one million bars sold per day. 7. The first Cadbury easter egg appeared in 1875 While playing around with different mouldable chocolate formulas and shapes, Cadbury came up with a hollow egg. This first version was a dark chocolate egg stuffed full of sugar-coated chocolate drops. 8. Cadbury Flakes were invented by mistake Can you believe that one of Cadbury’s most iconic chocolate bars, the Flake, came about by mistake? A Cadbury factory

worker noticed one day that the excess chocolate that was left over after the moulds were filled ended up cooling down into the shape of chocolate ribbons aka, like a Flake. Cadbury ran with the idea and the Cadbury Flake made its official debut in shops in 1920. 9. Cadbury’s Creme egg was first sold in 1971 We first got to taste the delight that is a Cadbury’s Creme Egg in 1971, despite the company making the very first creme-filled chocolate egg back in 1923. 10. Sales of Cadbury Creme eggs dropped dramatically in 2015 The reason six million less Creme Eggs were sold in 2015 than in previous years? Because it was announced that the recipe had been changed, and fans were fuming. 11. Cadbury tried to trademark ‘Cadbury purple’ Cadbury originally started using that iconic purple colour for its packaging in 1914 as a tribute to Queen Victoria, as it was her favourite colour. In 2008, Cadbury started a fouryear legal battle with Nestle because its Wonka range also had purple packaging, and eventually Cadbury won the right to trademark Pantone 2685C. But it was a short-lived victory, because the next year, Nestle successfully appealed the ruling and the colour was free for everyone to use again.

Keeping the midlife spread away Eating porridge in later life can help you avoid the dreaded middle-aged spread, according to a new study. Researchers from Tufts University in Boston monitored 3,000 people in their mid-50s and found that those who ate three servings of whole-grains a day had waist sizes two inches less than those who didn’t consume the same amount, as well as lower blood pressure and lower blood sugar levels. The US researchers believe the wholegrains found in oats, as well as brown bread and brown rice, are the key to midlife weight loss. “Our findings suggest that eating wholegrain foods as part of a healthy diet delivers health benefits beyond just helping us lose or maintain weight as we age,” says Nicola McKeown, one of the study’s authors. “In fact, the data suggests that people who eat more whole-grains are better able to maintain their blood sugar and blood pressure over time. Managing these risk factors as we age may help to protect against heart disease.” Caleigh Sawicki of Tufts University says: “There are several reasons that wholegrains may work to help people maintain waist size and reduce increases in the other risk factors. The presence of dietary fibre in whole-grains can have a satiating effect, and the magnesium, potassium and antioxidants may contribute to lowering blood pressure. “Soluble fibre in particular may have a beneficial effect on post-meal blood sugar spikes.” The study’s authors also found that nuts, chicken, seafood and yoghurt are among the foods you should be eating to avoid putting on weight as you age. The researchers examined the diets of 120,000 men and women over 16 years. They found that those with diets that were high in red meat, white bread, potatoes and sweets were associated with more weight gain, while nuts, skinless chicken, seafood and yoghurt can all help people lose weight as they get older. Foods such as nuts and yoghurts are traditionally high in calories, prompting Dr Dariush Mozaffarian, the senior researcher, to write: “Our study adds to the growing new research that counting calories is not the most effective strategy for long-term weight management and prevention. “We should not only emphasise specific protein rich foods like fish, nuts, and yoghurt to prevent weight gain, but also focus on avoiding refined grains, starches and sugars in order to prevent weight gain.” Dr Jessica Smith, the corresponding author, adds: “There is mounting scientific evidence that diets including

fewer low-quality carbohydrates, such as white bread, potatoes and sweets, and more proteinrich foods may be more efficient for weight loss. The study also looked at whether eating certain foods as part of the same meal contributed to people’s weight. Eating foods linked with weight gain, such as red meat, with vegetables mitigated the weight gain. Although dairy products such as cheese and milk didn’t contribute to weight gain or loss themselves, when they were served with foods high in starches and sugar they were linked to weight gain. What should you eat? Chicken: It is high in protein and low in fat. High-protein food helps you to feel fuller for longer so you should be less tempted to snack after a protein-rich meal and should feel fuller more quickly. Seafood: This is also high in protein and low in fat. Fat contains twice as many calories as protein or carbohydrate, so

food that is high in fat is also high in calories. Nuts: A useful snack because nuts are high in protein, which can help curb hunger pangs. However, they are high in fat. Although this is healthy fat (unsaturated), which helps keep your heart healthy, nuts are still calorific, so watch your portion size. Yoghurt: A good source of protein but it can be high in fat and sugar so choose carefully. Zero per cent Greek yoghurt is usually the best choice for anyone watching their weight. Yoghurts are a good source of calcium, which helps keep bones strong – after the age of 30 the loss of calcium from bones is accelerated, particularly for women after menopause. It’s important to make sure your diet contains plenty of calcium. Some studies even suggest that eating low-fat dairy products can help with weight loss – one theory is that calcium in dairy unlocks fat cells making it easier for the body to get rid of them.

diet Covid treatment hope Plant-based protects against Covid could one day be treated by ‘chopping’ the virus up using pioneering gene-editing technology, researchers say. Scientists programmed the controversial CRISPR tool to recognise and latch on to SARSCoV-2 — the coronavirus behind the pandemic. Laboratory tests revealed it could slice the virus up, stopping it from making copies of itself — which is how it causes disease in humans. Results showed it was up to 98 per cent effective, and could also target variants that could be more transmissible or dodge vaccines. Experts believe it could in the future be used to treat Covid patients when they are diagnosed, stopping them from falling seriously ill. Human trials could be years away, however, with Australian academics now planning tests of the tool — which works like a pair of DNA scissors — in animals. The CRISPR gene editing technique

is being used an increasing amount in health research because it can change the building blocks of the body. At a basic level, CRISPR works as a DNA cutting-and-pasting operation.

In humans, genes act as blueprints for many processes and characteristics in the body – they dictate everything from the colour of your eyes and hair to whether or not you have cancer. The components of CRISPR-Cas9 – the DNA sequence and the enzymes needed to implant it – are often sent

into the body on the back of a harmless virus so scientists can control where they go. Cas9 enzymes can then cut strands of DNA, effectively turning off a gene, or remove sections of DNA to be replaced with the CRISPRs, which are new sections sent in to change the gene and have an effect they have been pre-programmed to produce. Lead author Professor Sharon Lewin said: “Once the virus is recognised, the CRISPR enzyme is activated and chops up the virus. We targeted several parts of the virus — the parts that are very stable and don’t change and the parts that are highly changeable.” The virologist — whose team tested the treatment on infected monkey and human cells — added: “All worked very well in chopping up the virus.” They found that CRISPR still chopped up the virus when one mutation was inserted into its DNA, and worked against the Kent ‘Alpha’ variant.

Expert reveals latest coffee time You shouldn’t be drinking coffee past midday in order to get a good night sleep, a sleep expert has revealed. While thousands turn to an afternoon coffee at 3pm, Managing Director of Sleep for Health, Dr Carmel Harrington, said consuming coffee late in the day can be detrimental to your sleep at night. But there are ways to reverse the impacts of coffee by changing your bedtime routine an hour before bed and drinking water throughout the day. Dr Harrington, from Sydney, said drinking a standard cup of coffee past 12pm can impact your sleep in the evening. “If you want to get your sleep on track, quit the caffeine after midday and if you can’t come to terms with cutting out coffee after midday, try substituting it with the decaffeinated variety instead,” Dr Harrington said. “This is especially important if you are in the over 35 age group because as we age, our metabolic rate slows so the coffee that didn’t affect our sleep when we were younger could certainly be

doing so now.” For those who need an afternoon coffee to get through the day, it’s recommended to alter your evening routine to ensure you get the best sleep possible. One hour before bedtime, switch off technology, dim the lights in the room and reach for sleep-inducing essential oils like lavender oil or a sleep blend. As relaxation is the key to a good night sleep, it’s ideal to take a hot shower or bath and read before bed. This act of ‘switching off’ is vital to let your body and brain know it’s time for bed. Other side effects caused by caffeine include anxiety, stress, insomnia, digestive issues, fatigue, high blood pressure and rapid heart rate. High doses of coffee can impact people in different ways depending on the person’s caffeine tolerance. To compare, low-to-moderate caffeine intake can provide added health benefits.

multiple sclerosis Eating a plant-based diet that reacts with specific gut bacteria which are lacking in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), may provide protection against the disease, according to new research in mice.

and spinal cord where the immune system attacks the protective coating surrounding nerve fibres. The symptoms include muscle weakness, balance issues, and problems with vision and thinking.

The study led by Ashutosh Mangalam, PhD, UI associate professor of pathology, shows that a diet rich in isoflavone, a plant-based compound found in soybeans, peanuts, chickpeas and other legumes, protects against multiple sclerosis-like symptoms in mice. Importantly, the isoflavone diet was only effective when the mice had gut microbes capable of breaking down the isoflavones - but helped them develop them.

The exact cause of MS is unknown and while some treatments slow down the disease, there is currently no cure. However, a complex interaction between genetic and environmental factors are thought to initiate the disease.

“Interestingly, previous human studies have demonstrated that patients with multiple sclerosis lack these bacteria compared to individuals without MS,” Mangalam said. “Our new study provides evidence that the combination of dietary isoflavones and these isoflavone metabolizing gut bacteria may serve as a potential treatment for MS.” A diet lacking isoflavones promotes a microbiome in mice similar to one observed in patients with MS, an autoimmune disease of the brain

Recently, the gut microbiome - the trillions of gut bacteria the live inside human intestines - has emerged as a potential candidate as a contributing factor, but the mechanism through which these gut bacteria might influence the disease is poorly understood. Mangalam, whose team found that the isoflavone diet was ineffective when the helpful bacteria were not present, hopes his research could prove helpful to MS prevention. “This study suggests that an isoflavone diet may be protective so long as the isoflavone metabolizing gut bacteria are present in the intestines,” he said.

How and Why You Should Obtain your Eco Sticker Although obtaining and displaying the Eco Badge is voluntary, it is becoming less of a choice on account of the benefits, as cities and towns start to use the classification to reduce pollution causing congestion. As we saw recently, more towns and cities are being encouraged to create restrictive clean air zones. It is also becoming a requirement in order to sell your vehicle through some companies, and so the need is certainly increasing without mandatory enforcement. The origin of the labels resides in the National Air Quality Plan 2013-2016. Its purpose is to classify vehicles according to the pollution they are emitting. Their purchase is possible at any post office, which can also be done online through the Correos website. In order to obtain your eco sticker, you have to go to the post office with the vehicle’s registration certificate, the license plate number and ID of the owner or the authorisation of the owner if you are obtaining it on their behalf. Doing the process online is similar in that you must provide an image combining both the vehicle´s document and your identity. The national vehicle database will be able to ascertain whether your vehicle is suitable for one of the four categories, Zero emissions, Eco, C and B. Once you have your sticker you

then have to put it in the correct place on the windscreen, which, according to the DGT, is the lower right corner of the front windshield, as you’re looking out, so the ITV would be at the top right, the

eco sticker at the bottom right. If this is not possible, any visible site is accepted, but may cause problems if it is not in the exact or visible location where observers might check.

First of all, we would like to thank Plane Parking for sponsoring our golf day. Plane Parking are a large company in the region who take care of your vehicles whilst you are out of the country and have secure parking at Alicanteand the new Corvera Murcia airport.

On arriving at El Plantio we received a friendly and organised greeting from all the staff. The course was in absolutely fantastic condition from tee boxes to the greens. The weather, believe it or not, was sunny and a comfortable 30 degrees different to the previous 48 hours when it was 44 degrees! This was the closest competition we have had since we changed over to the New World Handicap system, out of 19 competing players in the two groups there was only 5 points separating 13 payers so a lot of counting back was in order. The overall winner of the Plane Parking Trophy eventually came from group “A” winning with 35 points was “The Joker” Mick Billins after a three way count back between group “B” winner “Sandy” Terry Burton and group “A” player “Keep it in the Family” Alan Ralph. Runner up from group A was “Keep it in the Family” Alan Ralph with 35 points, third place was “Three Clubs” Sean McGuiness with 34 points. Winner from group B was “Sandy” Terry Burton with 35 points, runner up was “Cash

Busters Golf Society July 2021 Twenty of us traveled south down the AP-7 to Roda golf course for our monthly Stableford competition, being a typical Spanish summer it was hot, and at the very least two bottles of cold liquid were required to drink as we went along.

We started with a full English breakfast in Imanyo’s and the format for the day was singles full handicap Stableford played in two groups.

After collecting the green fees, having a coffee we were ready to tee off, as is the norm Roda had been kept to is usual high standard, the fairways the greens along with the rest of the course were in very good condition, leading to a very hot but enjoyable game.

Point” Alan Boyden with 33 points and third place was Gary Smith with 32 points.Winners of nearest the pins were hole 2 Ken Waller, hole 5 “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly, hole 7”Sandy” Terry Burton, hole 13 “He’s on Fire” Steve Burns, hole 15 “Three Clubs” Sean McGuiness and hole 18 “Cash Point” Alan Boyden, best front nine was won with 18 points by “Keep it in the family” Alan Ralph and best back nine went to “Three Clubs” Sean McGuinness with 20 points, the Two’s pot was not won so with be €20 in the pot next time. The Doubles knock semi finale winners were Steve Day and Mick Billins beating Peter Kelly and Derry Quinlan 3-1, they play Martin Gadney and Chris Houghton in the final.

Thank you to Plane Parking Directors Nick and Marianne Baker for providing and presenting all the prizes, also thank you to Antonio and staff at Imanyo’s for the fantastic food and great hospitality. TAlES frOm THE TOP flIGHT and wants to have a go himself. He’s told Mikel Arteta he wants out - luckily, Arteta still has Cedric Soares, right?

n chris darwen chris@costablancapeople.com

A week without actual football has now passed us by because, as ever, we do not count preseason friendlies as football and no matter how hard we try, it’s difficult to get too excited about the prequalifying rounds of the Champions League. All we have to live for in this postEuros world is the transfer merry-goround and we are living in eternal hope it (a) being merry and (b) actually going round. What throw-a-six-to-start rumours have been out there this week and has anything actually been confirmed? Strap yourself in reader, we’re about to bring you fully up to speed. Rafa Benitez is hoping the signing of Kalidou Koulibaly, once a target for their neighbours, will show he is serious about bringing success to the Ev as well as increasing their outgoings significantly. Koulibaly played for Rafa in Italy, apparently, and what’s the point of paying a superstar manager a huge wedge of cash if he cannot open his contact book? Benitez is also keen to rid the club of Moise Kean permanently and Juventus are said to be open to taking him back to Turin - water passing under bridges springs to mind. Juve would also like a bit of Gabby Jesus, but we said that last week and not much has happened. Slightly less exciting for Everton fans is the arrival of Asmir Begovic to be the backup to Pickford.

Houssem Aouar is still very much on the Arsenal list with James Maddison and Albert Sambi Lokonga should/ might/probably will arrive from Anderlecht in the next seven days. Joe Willock has seen these rumours and correctly deduced Arteta doesn’t fancy him so would like another year in Newcastle to continue being cuddled by Steve Bruce. Andre Onana won’t be joining the Gunners as he is off to France and Lyon - and speaking of France, Arsenal are hoping to nudge Eddie Nketiah towards Patrick Vieira and Crystal Palace. Vieira needs to get busy otherwise Palace will struggle to name an eleven on the Premier League opening day, and he’s currently looking at a keeper Sunderland released, a child-striker from Man City and Kasper Dolberg from Nice (who presumably hasn’t been that put off by being managed by Vieira previously). Tottenham have joined the race for Portuguese (yeah, obviously) international Renato Sanches. Liverpool are still linked and Barcelona are working out how to fiddle the books to make it happen too. If you look up Wales’ Harry Wilson on Wikipedia you’ll see that his bio includes “perfect signing for a newlypromoted Premier League team” so Brentford would like him for £10m and would like to pay that again for Celtic’s Kristopher Ajer (who is pretty good, apparently).

Arsenal could have a good week next week - having snapped up Nuno Tavares from Benfica, there’s a good chance they’ll finally sign Ben White and tempt Ruben Neves away from Wolves. We can all agree that they’d be little upgrades on Rob Holding and Mohamed Elneny.

Manchester United think this is the week where they finally get Raphael Varane from Real Madrid, though those pesky PSG people are now trying to muscle in on the deal. If United are not careful, they might end up with Vinicius Jr as well as Madrid try to flog him so they can sign Kylian Mbappe.

to focus on closing the deals on Harry Kane (who Nuno say is DEFINITELY not going anywhere), Jack Grealish (who is becoming very tempted by a new Aston Villa deal) and Erling Haaland who Dortmund are half resigned to losing and half determined to keep. Roman Abramovich has made it his personal mission to persuade Dortmund that they should sell Haaland to him and if that fails, Chelsea have a cunning Plan B in going for Robert Lewandowski instead. Griezmann is more likely to end up back at Atletico in a swap deal with Saul Niguez, meaning he won’t be going to Liverpool after all. Someone else keen to get away from Diego Simeone is Kieran Trippier who has his heart set on going to Man United. If that happens, Simeone would like Norwich’s Max Aarons to be his replacement - English right-backs are very, very in fashion right now. Staying with City, they were impressed with Fulham’s Antonee Robinson relegation season and would like to keep him in the Premier League. Wolves seem to think he is Portuguese and have made a bid. Another player that went down with Fulham might find themselves in a better place in life - Alphonse Areola is off to West Ham on loan. With Saul going to Barca (maybe it was offering them Divock Origi that put them off ), Liverpool need to get their midfield sorted so are now chasing down Italy’s Nicolo Barella

las ramblas Golf Society Andy Martin together with Mike Mahony were in the money as they won Monday’s 2 Ball Better Ball with a very impressive 48 points. With Andy playing off a handicap of 2 it was quite some achievement. In the runners up slot were RegAkehurst (at the age of 92!) and Graham Murray with 44. Wednesday’s Stableford was interesting as we all played from the ladies red tees. The men were all cut 2 shots whilst for some strange reason the ladies were all given 2. Graham kept his run of good form going and won with 44 points. I managed to grab the

silver with 41 and John Shervell claimed bronze with 40. Three 2’s; Graham Murray, Liz Robertson and …………… Me! One of our latest recruits, Mike Smith, made a welcome visit to the winner’s podium on Friday. Playing a 6x6x6 and with 83 points he was part of the winning team alongside Joyce McClusky, FriedelKnebel and ‘Albert’. A close second, with 80, were Graham Murray, Nigel Price and Ken & Liz Robertson. pues hasta la semana que viene peter Reffell Graham Murray

from Inter - £60m is the number being bandied about. To stop King Klopp taking Youri Tielemans away, Leicester City are going to offer him a new fat cheque at the bottom of a new long-term contract. Klopp has also missed out on Donyell Malen, who is off to Dortmund to be the new Jadon Sancho. Tottenham do need to get busy and will finalise the deal for Tommy Yasu this week. Tomiyasu is an allaction defender who could become a crowd favourite quite quickly and ease the pain for Kane not turning up to training to force through a move. Spurs would also like American Matthew Hoppe, a 20-year-old forward who scored six Bundesliga goals last season - surely ending all Hoppe of Kane staying? Nuno wants two players from Wolves and is worryingly linked to some not-so-good ones - Willy Boly and Daniel Podence could be wearing Lillywhite next season. Finally, Jose Mourinho has been linked to a shock move for a Manchester United left-back - and yes, of course, he wants Alex Telles on loan. Sorry, Luke. if you want to know everything, and we mean everything, about the upcoming premier League season then head over to Amazon to pick up a copy of my latest book - “The premier League guide” for the 2021/22 season.
