Locals protest for better services

around one hundred local residents gathered outside Playa Flamenca town hall last thursday to protest the lack of services for orihuela Costa. the demonstration got off to a sticky start when Police officers explained that due to social distancing regulations the square outside the municipal building was not large enough to accommodate the demonstration. however, undeterred the crowd took the opportunity to march through the streets of making their discontent before congregating at the promenade. once there a manifesto entitled ‘orihuela-Costa says enough’ was read in english and spanish. it stated: “the residents of the coast have suffered the same problems for many years, but increasingly more serious. at this time of year, the deficiencies are further aggravated and affect not only residents but also tourists that visits us, and that we run the risk of losing as a result of the

situation we suffer. For this reason, we have organized this neighbourhood protest, in order for its noise to reach the orihuela corporation, on a day when its members are gathered in the Municipal Plenary.” it then outlined specific grievances with street cleaning, infrastructure, safety and security, transport, business and finally several issues were addressed directly to the Mayor of orihuela including the fact that the 20 million euros raised by the sale of coastal land has not been used to improve the area. the manifesto ended by declaring that ‘the list of demands is endless and fully affect the dignity of residents and their quality of life. they religiously pay their taxes and see no results. many years, the neighbours of the coast have suffered from the injustice of contributing more money to the municipal treasury than we receive in services and investments’ and demanded that the government team work immediately to solve these serious problems.

Mercadona starts work on its online shopping hive in Alicante supermarket chain Mercadona has started work on a central depot in alicante to boost its online offering in the region. the project represents and investment of around €14 million and will employ around 340 people. it is expected to be operational by mid 2022. the new warehouse will serve as the central hub for the preparation and distribution of online orders in the alicante region. such facilities already exist in Valencia, Barcelona and Madrid. internally, the company call these facilities ‘hives’ and the newest such hive will be located in Mercalicante. the warehouse will measure 10,000 square metres and is to be built on a 19,000 square metre plot. during the construction phase, 150 people will be employed. the new hive will serve the city of alicante and depending on the success of the project, Mercadona will expand the service to other municipalities across the province. the new team working at the hive will be a 340 strong workforce including delivery drivers and pickers, those who take charge of ‘picking’ the products to prepare the online orders.

a Mercadona spokesperson said that the new online hive “seeks to improve the experience of the Boss (the customer) by enabling a new shopping website and mobile application.” By moving the preparation and dispatch of online orders to the “hive”, instead of managing them one by one from the various supermarkets, productivity and efficiency will be increased, guaranteeing a better service,

says Mercadona. in addition, the new fleet of vehicles have been specially designed for the process. they have three temperature zones for each type of product: room temperature, refrigerated and frozen. they also have a mechanised unloading system that minimizes the handling of the load and as such, less risk of overexertion for the workers and a reduction of the unloading time.

Two arrested for armed burglary on Orihuela Costa guardia Civil have arrested two people for the alleged armed burglary and intimidation of a house in orihuela Costa. the victims, an 80 year old woman and her young female carer, were tied up, gagged and threatened with a gun during the incident. the robbers fled on foot after taking over a thousand euro in cash and a quantity of the elderly woman’s jewellery.

once the incident was reported to police, detectives arrived to the house to carry out a search, taking fingerprints as well as statements from the victims. it transpired that one of the people involved in the alleged burglary was a former employee at the house and had been fired just weeks before the robbery took place. according to statements given by the victims, on the day the robbery took place, the 17 year old carer arrived to the home of the 80 year old as usual. her first task of the day was to walk the lady’s dog so she attached the dog’s lead and went out on to the street. there she was approached at the door

by two people who are alleged to have pointed a gun at her and forced her to return back inside in silence without raising the alarm. once inside, the perpetrators tied up and gagged both the young woman and the elderly lady and, when they managed to immobilize them completely, from the drawer of one of the bedside tables in the old woman’s bedroom, they took an envelope with 800 euros and from her bag, which was hanging in the next room, another 280 euros. in addition, they stole gold jewellery.

after the burglars had fled on foot, the young woman managed to free herself from the duct tape they had used to tie her and was able to call the guardia Civil. officers were quickly able to locate the man who used to work for the homeowner. he had worked there for two years but she had fired him because she suspected he was stealing from her. his female accomplice had been described in detail by the victims and she was also arrested in torrevieja. officers carried out a search on both suspects’ houses and found 1,300 euros

in cash and various pieces of jewellery, which the suspects could not prove legitimate origin. in addition, various objects were found, such as ski masks and walkie-talkies, possibly used for criminal activity. the two arrested were a 37-year-

Reprieve for Cala Mosca in a totally unexpected development the proposal to approve the modified plan to build over 2,000 new houses and apartments on Cala Mosca was not included in the agenda of last week council meeting. so the fatal blow to this last kilometre of virgin coastland has been avoided - for the moment. in an unexpected move the Popular Party - senior party in the governing coalition announced it would not vote in favour of the proposal. this meant that Ciudadanos with only four councillors could not obtain sufficient votes to put forward the proposal and in a humiliating climb down, the

Councillor for urbanismo said he would reverse his position and withdraw the proposal in the face of doubts. the refusal of the Popular Party to support its coalition partner is a staggering blow. however, it is doubtful that the Popular Party is now opposed to the destruction of this last iconic cement free area. it is more likely a deliberate move to clip the wings of its junior partner which has in the past two years disproportionately used its position in the coalition to get the most powerful positions in the local government and for two years to block the Mayor from securing approval for a key piece of legislation, the annual

budget. since the Popular Party recently approved, with the support of the socialist Party but the opposition of its partner Ciudadanos, a €9.5m investment package - which did not include a single item for orihuela Costa - it could even signal a determination by the two major orihuela parties to destroy the local Ciudadanos Party before the next municipal elections in 2023. the failure to approve the construction project for Cala Mosca provides a breathing space for C.L.a.r.o. and its political ally Cambiemos to continue to oppose this socially and environmentally destructive project.

€30m commercial investment in Torrevieja port proposed a businessman has filed a request to build a leisure facility in torrevieja port, representing an investment of €30m. the firm, owned by business mogul enrique riquelme, is proposing to build an 80,000 square metre leisure facility with cinemas, a bowling alley, bars, restaurants and underground parking. the fairground and the space used by local fishermen will be left intact, says the proposal which was published last week by the dogV in the official state gazette. the request to build and operate a leisure and commercial area was filed by inmuebles y negocios del sol, owned by 32 year old, multimillionaire businessman enrique riquelme originally from nearby Cox. Plans specify that the

building will not be higher than the dique de Levante (the ‘pier’ in torrevieja) and would be located in the area that is currently occupied by the public car park. it is also planned to build an underground car park where the fairground is currently located and to redevelop another area to relocate the fairground. the project would also involve the demolition of two of the three buildings owned and operated by the port, located across from the Casino. riquelme told the press that the project has been designed to respect the essence of the space and to leave the fishing sector and related infrastructure intact. the Valencian government took over management of

torrevieja port in 2015 and at that time, ruled out the possibility of developing any large commercial facilities in the port area. Back in 2009, the then Mayor of torrevieja had tabled plans for a spectacular redevelopment of the port area. the project never took off due to the economic crisis. in 2014, during the current Mayor eduardo dolón’s first term, another port development project was presented but the following year, the PP were voted out and dolón had to wait another four years before resuming his position as Mayor. even if the project is given the ‘ok’ by Valencia, torrevieja town hall will have the final say as it will be the body issuing the licences for the project to commence.

Spanish mortgages get cheaper eurozone interest rates are close to historic lows and expected to end July on -0.49 percent - and, as spanish mortgages are linked to these rates, buying a property is likely to be cheaper in the next month without home prices having to come down. the euribor, or the interest rate that applies in member states using the common currency, has been in negative figures now for five-and-ahalf years, since February 2016, having been dropping drastically since the global recession took hold. From highs of well over 5 percent at the beginning of 2008, forcing mortgage repayments up, the Central european Bank (BCe) has been dropping rates constantly since, in a bid to make finance more affordable for households and businesses and increase liquidity in the eurozone. although every year brings warnings that the ‘honeymoon’ is likely to end imminently, they have so far proven unfounded – the BCe does not intend to consider a rate rise unless and until the common currency area inflation levels exceed the longterm target of 2 percent. For as long as inflation stays below 2 percent, the euribor is expected

to stay at less than 0 percent, although some variation in either direction may be seen in the next couple of years, analysts believe. Meanwhile, if the euribor sits at the forecast -0.49 percent monthly home loan savings could be significant. Based upon the average mortgage in spain – a loan of €150,000 over a 25year term at a rate of euribor plus 1 percent - would, if they

were due for review at the end of July, drop by around €14 a month, or €170 a year. spanish variable-rate mortgages are reviewed annually, or in some cases, every six months, meaning a sudden interest rate rise will not mean the very next payment goes up – homeowners have a full 12 months to plan if they see that the euribor is rising, and time to make a decision about applying a fixed rate if it looks as though

899

4

their payments will be going up next year. the pandemic has caused some shrinkage in the economy across the eurozone, so it is likely interest rates will be kept down to help stimulate cash-flow and aid recovery – a situation that may continue for at least a couple of years. Conversely, spain’s housing market has become more buoyant and home values risen during the Covid crisis, largely triggered by the spring 2020 lockdown which led householders to rethink where they wanted to live if they were going to be stuck indoors again, and a rise in working from home meaning more choice of location, fuelling an increase in house prices in coastal and country areas to the detriment of large, inland cities, and soaring demand for villas with pools and gardens or apartments with spacious terraces. ever-decreasing mortgage interest rates mean the rising home prices are not necessarily any more expensive for buyers, except those purchasing in cash – borrowing capacity increases, but not outlay, allowing sellers to add on a few digits to their price tags without putting potential new owners off.

the mayor of torrevieja, eduardo dolón, accompanied by the team of Councillors and the spokesperson for Ciudadanos, gathered on the Paseo Marítimo in torrevieja to unveil a sculpture in hour of the victims of Covid-19. the sculpture bears the inscription: “torrevieja to the victims of Covid - 19. You left alone, but you will remain forever in our memory.” the simple monument has as its main figure an iron sculpture entitled “embraces with soul”, which was developed together with the non-profit association alarum, represented at the unveiling by emi alilaga, and created by Crevillente artist, Pepe Miralles.

the mayor announced that when the situation regarding the pandemic allows it, “a great act of tribute to all the victims will be held in this same place, with recognition of all the people who in one way or another have tried to mitigate the effects of this tragedy.” the representative of the alarum association thanked the torrevieja town hall for supporting this project and explained that this sculpture means “the embrace of compassion, a feeling that makes us more human and allows us to understand the pain of others.” the creator, Pepe Miralles, said “it has been a great

responsibility for me for all that this motive entails and what i wanted to collect is the hug in the air that symbolizes all the hugs that we have not been able to give ourselves in these times.” the “hugs with soul” project is set to be complemented with an educational initiative so that the youngest citizens can build memory and awareness around everything that happened in relation to Covid-19. Councillor for education, ricardo recuero, revealed that “an olive tree will be planted in each school that will symbolize the memory of everything we are experiencing. other activities such as workshops for students will also take place.”

Sport in the Street a series of free sporting activities entitled ‘sport in the street’ are set to take place in Los Montesinos throughout august, every tuesday and thursday. the activities will be held in the Plaza del ayuntamiento at 8pm. the initiative was presented by sports Councillor, ana Belén Juárez who said that the programme “will bring physical and sports activity to everyone during the month of august in an effort to promote healthy life and support the local gyms, whom the pandemic has affected significantly.” three local gyms are involved in the programme. Classes will take place every tuesday and thursday at 8pm throughout the month of august and a healthy snack will be provided afterwards by the town hall. Juárez said, “We are a town with great sporting potential that, in addition to the public infrastructures that we have, has a very important economy around sport. and we have to take advantage of this so that all people implement healthy practices and good habits. this is where this initiative comes from, which aims to bring sport closer to everyone, regardless of their age and physical condition and capacity, since anyone can participate in the programme.” Juárez continued, “We also want to show that sport does not give up, and this is one of the slogans that appears on the commemorative mugs that we will give to people who participate in at least three activities from different sports centres. gyms have had to stop

their activity, we have had restrictions on going out on the street and, nevertheless, sport has been a great escape valve for many people from their own homes in a confinement situation. now it seems that the new rules allow, strictly respecting sanitary measures, that we can socialize again by doing sports and we wanted to promote some of the activities that are

done in the local gyms such as spinning or training as well as new disciplines that the town hall intends to promote, such as taekwondo or running.” in addition to the free outdoor classes, there will be an organised night hiking route that will start at the Plaza del ayuntamiento on Friday 13th. the councillor was keen to thank the three gyms - gym Ballesta, Buen Corps and deisa Wellness Centre - for their collaboration on this initiative and highlighted the quality of the activities offered in each of the three centres. Juárez, particicularly wanted to encourage local women to join in the activities saying that women

“due to their family responsibilities and the rhythm of daily life, find it difficult to continue to practice sports continuously. i would like these days to be an opportunity for them to see that it is a healthy alternative for leisure and free time and that in the municipality of Los Montesinos there are options that are sure to suit their needs and schedules.” - tuesday, august 3: Master Class spinning offered by Ballesta gym - thursday, august 5: ‘training in the olympus’ (Functional training) offered by Buen Corps - tuesday august 10: introduction to running offered by the department of sports - thursday, august 12: Master Class spinning offered by Ballesta gym - Friday august 13: night hiking route organized by the department of sports - tuesday august 17: Functional training offered by deisa Wellnes Centre - thursday, august 19: ‘Jogo Bonito’ (Functional training) offered by good Body - tuesday, august 24: introduction to taekwondo offered by the department of sports - thursday, august 26: Functional training offered by deisa Wellnes Centre * all activities will be free and will begin at 8:00 p.m. in the Plaza del ayuntamiento * To control the capacity, prior registration is required by calling the town hall 96 672 10 87.

Man arrested for neck stabbing a man in torrevieja has been arrested for stabbing another man in the neck with a stanley knife and leaving him to bleed out in a car. guardia Civil arrested the 36 year old man for attempted murder after he allegedly left his victim to die in a car after stabbing him in the neck with a retractable stanley knife. the incident took place in torrevieja on July 16th when a man was walking down a quiet street and stopped as he passed by a vehicle, hearing the victim’s cries for help. as he approached, he noticed that the man was bleeding profusely from a neck wound and he immediately called the emergency services. the victim was rushed to torrevieja hospital where doctors were able to save his life. the stab wound missed vital arteries by mere centimetres. guardia Civil detectives took samples from the scene for study and found part of the retractable blade used to stab the victim. initially, the efforts to locate the alleged

perpetrator were unsuccessful and the investigation was temporarily paused, until just a few weeks later, it was learned that an individual had gone to a police station to report that he had been the victim of an injury to the finger. detectives suspected that he may have been involved in the assault and managed to locate and arrest him. the man was charged with attempted homicide taking account his

intentions, for causing injuries of significant magnitude and fleeing the scene, leaving the victim abandoned to his luck, in an isolated area. according to the investigations, which were overseen by the torrevieja Civil guard Judicial Police team, the fight could have originated as a result of a disagreement over money. the suspect has appeared in court and has been remanded in prison to await trial.

Moving onto the next series of funds, russell, to give a specific example i will look at russell emerging Markets equity Class r fund, whose isin is ie00B4n92K53. as with the harmony funds, we have discovered surprisingly high fees in these class r funds, 2.64% per annum ongoing costs on this particular fund. i’ve personally only ever seen these funds held in Lombard international bonds, where they are referred to as Lombard russell funds on valuations. in my experience these valuations have not included the international securities identification number (isin), which is a 12-digit code that clients and financial advisers can use to easily confirm information, including fees, for particular funds. Without these numbers, which are included on the vast majority of valuations i’ve seen in spain, it can be very hard to those holding these funds to understand the true costs they are paying for their overall recommendation. i’ve also seen a number of Lombard international portfolios holding Privee select

funds, as a specific example, the Privee select dynamic gBP share Class a (Lu1061646730) fund has total ongoing charges of 2.18%. if you are holding funds with particularly high charges, then there is a distinct possibility that these fund houses are paying your financial adviser to recommend these funds to you. this creates a clear conflict of interests, raising the question of whether your financial adviser is truly acting in your best interests, or simply recommending solutions that pay them. if you are also paying siPP, QroPs, investment Bond fees and adviser fees, you could be unaware of the true combined costs of your overall recommendation. We have seen genuine examples where clients have been unwittingly paying over 6% in combined fees per year for many years and have only discovered this when they have come to Chorus Financial for a review. For context, Chorus have always guaranteed we would never use funds that pay us any form of fee or commission. unlike funds

costing up to 3.28% per year, as we’ve seen in these examples, the average cost of funds in Chorus portfolios is comfortably under 1% per year. think about the difference 2-3% in additional annual costs can make to your finances over a number of years… if you are in any of the abovementioned funds, or fear that you may be in a similar fund (there are dozens being used in spain) then you should contact Chorus Financial urgently. We have seensuch funds in investment Bonds including seB, Quilter international, Lombard international and stM. a short review of such a portfolio can lead to you saving significant amounts in fees each year, whilst moving to a portfolio that has been selected with your best interests in mind, rather than the interests of your financial adviser. For a free review without any obligation, call me today on 664 398 702, email s.kelly@ chorusfinancial.es or visit www. chorusfinancial.es for more information.

GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP reaching its highest level against the euro sinit’s been an exciting week for the pound, closing July in shared first place alongside the swiss franc, with a 1.70% gain against the us dollar and a 0.75% gain against the euro, weekon-week. For July as a whole, sterling was an average of 1% ahead, beaten only by the safehaven franc and Japanese yen. there were not many uK economic statistics and they were not all helpful to the pound. the 0.5% monthly increase in retail sales provided some slight uplift but the provisional purchasing managers’ indices came in at four-month lows, house prices fell 0.5% and mortgage approvals declined by more than expected. however, sterling hit a winning streak mid-week, propelled by a triad of positive news; Covid cases in the uK dropped for a 7th consecutive day, uK borders are set to welcome double-jabbed eu and us visitors, and the Bank of england appears unlikely to cut stimulus just yet. as a result, sterling has soared somewhat unexpectedly, hitting a 15-week high against the euro. in more positive news this week, retail sales have more than doubled since 1989, helped by an increase of more than two thirds in household disposable income, and house prices are now 30% higher than they were at their peak prior to the 2008 global financial crisis. the iMF also spoke of a sharp improvement for the uK economy this year, which it now sees expanding by 7% in 2021, “the same as the united states and the joint-fastest growth rate among major advanced economies”.

however, with both the Boe and downing street warning that we aren’t out of the woods yet, ‘caution’ is the word going forward. EURO While last week was a quiet one for the euro with little of note on the statistics front, today’s news of recovery from a double-dip recession more than makes up for it. With certain european countries ravaged by the pandemic, moving into the second quarter of 2021 having rebounded into growth of 1.9% more than the previous quarter is cause for celebration in itself. Countries including italy, which was one of the worst affected by Covid and entered a deep recession as a result, has shown surprisingly strong growth of 2.7%, helping to drive positive results for the wider european economy this week. increases in consumer spending is thought to be one of the main drivers of growth as households resume more normal spending habits as lockdowns are lifted, made possible, of course, by the acceleration of a once lagging vaccine rollout. in further positive news for the euro, the eurozone fared better than Britain on the purchasing managers’ index front, and the readings from europe were quite punchy, helped by the accelerating withdrawal of lockdowns. the readings from germany and the eurozone were all above 60, on a 0-100 scale in which 50 represents breakeven, and they showed business activity growing at the fastest rate in 21 years. it was a slightly different story with confidence. iFo’s measures of business clime, current assessment and expectations for germany were all below forecast and lower on the month. the eu’s own assessments of business and consumer confidence were mixed.

Quarantine-free travel for double jabbed expats Much to the delight of expat Brits living in span, uK Ministers have finally agreed to quarantinefree travel for fully vaccinated foreign nationals from a host of countries including vast swathes of the eu and even the us. the uK now recognises vaccine passports from countries that currently accept the nhs Covid pass for travelling Brits in a deal that was announced towards the end of last week. it comes as travel insiders are becoming increasingly confident that the government will announce a “big bang” approach to opening up travel this week with more countries added to the green list. Currently 33 different countries recognise the uK’s Covid-19 passport, and ministers had been drawing up plans to provide reciprocity for several weeks, allowing doubleinoculated travellers to visit family and friends in england. Countries that recognised the nhs app included spain, greece, France, germany, ireland, Portugal hong Kong, anguila, the Cayman islands and Barbados among others. government sources said that talks were ongoing in

regards to recognising us vaccination certification, but no decision had yet been made. it is understood that signing off on this move is complicated by the fact each us state has its own approach to Covid passports, with some states only issuing paper certificates, raising fears of forgery. Many eu countries have

relaxed restrictions on fullyvaccinated us travellers, however, piling pressure on the uK to follow suit. Traffic light changes however, the announcement is bitter-sweet for Brits desperate to see loved ones as speculation mounts that spain will be moved to the so-called ‘amber plus’ list for travel restrictions. this would mean Brits visiting spain would have to quarantine for 10 days upon their return. this system was unveiled

when a ban on foreign holidays was lifted on 17th May as part of the lockdown roadmap. destinations are categorised as green, amber, or red, depending on the severity and risk of coronavirus. despite now being in July, the green list is still limited, with a large proportion on the ‘green watchlist’ - meaning they’re at risk to moving to the amber list. reviews usually take place every three weeks. announcements often come on a thursday, however the latest one came on Wednesday, 14th July. the next review is therefore expected this week, with the announcement most likely on either Wednesday, 4th august or thursday, 5th august. a uK travel expert said: “We’re expecting something of a big bang around opening more green-list destinations. Ministers have become a lot more confident with the falling levels of infection that more countries can go green.” “More countries going green is badly needed for the travel sector in august. it urgently needs to get more destinations available to it and urgently needs to get more flowing into businesses,” he added.

Spain ahead of UK, USA and Spanish economy forecast Canada for double-jabbed to bounce back in 2022 spain is leading the field in residents fully vaccinated against Covid-19, sitting at the top of the list of some of the world’s most heavily-populated nations and beating the uK, usa and Canada. according to the latest available figures out of a total headcount of 47.1 million, spain had finished vaccinating 25.4 million people. the uK and Canada, jointly, are only slightly behind, at 54.1 percent, and are so far the only three large populations on earth with over half their population now completely immunised. according to a graph by our World in data – which only gives details of countries that have reported breakdowns of first and second doses – the usa is the nearest to spain, the uK and Canada, with 48.6 percent of its residents fully inoculated. the european union average is 45.7 percent, although two countries besides spain – germany (48.2 percent) and italy (47.3 percent) - are showing above-average immunisation percentages. France is just below the median figure, at 44.1 percent. For the world as a whole, the eu’s and un’s vaccine donation schemes are proving more necessary than ever, as only 13.6 percent of the planet is

fully immunised; it is hoped this will improve once the wealthiest nations finish jabbing their home populations and are able to give away doses to poorer countries. in australia, only 12.5 percent of the population has been vaccinated in full, but its huge headcount and vast land-mass means it is likely to need much longer to do so; in area size, the entire continent of europe – net of russia – could fit inside australia without touching the sides. according to spain’s health ministry and reflected in the report by our World in data, nearly two-thirds of the country’s residents – 64.3 percent, or 30.5 million – have had at least one dose of the Pfizer, astraZeneca or Moderna, even where they are not fully immunised, meaning that within another three or four weeks, the 5.1 million with only one dose will join the 25.4 million who have finished their vaccine programme, so the very minimum percentage of spain’s population vaccinated in full by the third week in august will be, in fact, 64.3 percent. But more doses are being

delivered from the laboratories, and organisations such as the red Cross have been administering shots to free up health service staff, which shows the rate of vaccination seen at present is unlikely to slow down and could well speed up as the summer progresses. to date, spain has received 60.1 percent of the vaccines it has ordered and paid for, or 56.18 million, of which 53.5 million have been administered so far, being 95.6 percent of the country’s stock. the vast majority, or 55.93 million, have been delivered to regional health authorities, of which more than two-thirds – 67.3 percent, or 37.62 million – are Pfizer, around a fifth, or 10.2 million, are astraZeneca, 5.7 million or just under 10 percent are Moderna, and 2.4 million, or 4.3 percent, are the single-dose Janssen formula.

the spanish government has confirmed its economic growth forecast for this year and the next, based on the pace of recovery following the end of most coronavirus mobility restrictions and the good pace of the Covid-19 vaccination drive. the Cabinet said that gross domestic product (gdP) will grow 6.5 percent in 2021 and 7 percent in 2022, in line with previous forecasts. “in 2022, spain will recover its pre-pandemic activity and in 2023, it will return to the path of growth we had before the health crisis,” said economy Minister nadia Calviño of the socialist Party (Psoe), which leads a coalition government with the leftist unidas Podemos. the international Monetary Fund (iMF) is a little less optimistic. in its latest World economic outlook report, the international organization has shaved two tenths of a point off its april growth forecast for spain, now set at 6.2 percent for 2021. For next year, the forecast is now 5.8 percent, up from 4.7 percent in april. this makes spain the advanced economy that will expand the most in 2022 after suffering the biggest setback in 2020, when output fell by a

record 10.8 percent, the biggest decline since the spanish Civil War. the iMF’s figures are more in line with the european Commission, which is forecasting growth of 6.2 percent in 2021 and 6.3 percent in 2022. the iMF’s projected growth for spain in 2022 is significantly higher than for germany (4.1 percent), France (4.2 percent) and italy (4.2 percent), but because the spanish economy shrank so much more last year, it will

return to pre-pandemic levels later than France and germany, although earlier than italy. Following the Cabinet meeting, economy Minister nadia Calviño said that after the summer she will consider raising the minimum wage, depending on the evolution of the labour market. the minister underscored the market’s progress in recent months, particularly in June when the jobless rate fell by a record

amount and nearly 235,000 workers were added to the social security system. “this summer we could go back to employment levels similar to those before the pandemic,” she said. But it is still unclear whether many of the workers who remain on the government’s erte job retention scheme will be laid off in the fall, along with workers in the tourism industry who were hired for the summer season. With a view to drafting next year’s budget, the Cabinet also capped the 2022 spending ceiling at €196.1 billion, a 0.02 percent rise from the previous year and the highest on record. Last year, the executive raised the limit on spending by 53 percent in order to cover extraordinary expenses derived from the coronavirus pandemic, including the erte scheme, financial aid for small businesses and transfers to local and regional governments to help them with health and education measures. the €196.1 billion includes €26.4 billion from the eu recovery fund, and Brussels will demand reforms in exchange for that amount. also included are transfers to regional governments worth €18.4 billion, a 32.1 percent rise from last year.

HMS TRENT arrives in Cartagena after three months operating in North Africa and the Black Sea On her first visit to Spain, the British Navy Offshore Patrol Vessel HMS TRENT spent a week in the port of Cartagena, Murcia. HMS TRENT is building operational links with allies and partners in southern Europe. She visited Cartagena to listen to and learn from Spanish Navy counterparts at the Maritime Action Operations and Surveillance Center (COVAM), located at the General Headquarters of the Maritime Action Force in Cartagena, Murcia. HMS TRENT left the UK at the end of March for an enduring mission to the Mediterranean, with a focus on the security of southern Europe and West Africa, as announced in the UK Government’s Integrated Review of Defence and Foreign Policy. HMS TRENT arrived in Spain after spending her first four months operating in North Africa, the eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea. HMS Trent’s Commanding Officer, Cdr Tom Knott MBE RN, said: “We’re delighted to have arrived in Cartagena to build on the strong ties between the UK and Spain. Already in the four months we’ve been in the Mediterranean, we’ve had the opportunity to work with the Spanish Navy, most recently with ESPS Rayo as part of Exercise Breeze.” “Our enduring presence in the region shows that the Royal Navy is committed to supporting our Allies and Partners here, tackling shared

threats to our security and keeping the sea safe for mariners. With our upcoming visits to West Africa and the Gulf of Guinea later in the year, I’m looking forwards to learning as much as possible from our Spanish colleagues at COVAM and hearing their experiences of operating there,” Cdr Tom Knott added. British Ambassador to Spain Hugh Elliott welcomed the arrival of the ship: “I am delighted that HMS TRENT is in Cartagena. It is another great example, following the recent visit of HMS KENT frigate to Alicante, of the UK’s continued commitment to European security and our shared priorities in the area. “ “The presence of HMS TRENT in Cartagena is a great opportunity to learn and collaborate with Spain, in a visit that marks the beginning of an enduring relationship over the coming months and years. I hope this visit is the first of many more to come,” said the ambassador. HMS TRENT’s visit to Cartagena, following the recent visit of the Type 23 frigate HMS KENT to Alicante, shows the UK’s continued commitment to European security and our shared priorities in the region. The ship docked in the port of Cartagena, with a reception and a capability demonstration for local authorities. The UK and Spain have a proud history of working together as Allies in defence and security. This includes joint patrols as part of NATO’s Baltic Air Policing operations and until recently

contributions to security operations in Afghanistan. Later this year HMS TRENT will head to West Africa where she will work alongside partners from Spain, France, Italy and Portugal to improve security in the Gulf Guinea, including counter-piracy operations. About hMS TRenT: • As one of the Royal Navy’s patrol vessels, HMS TRENT remains at sea for about 300 days a year, and crew members rotate regularly to take vacations and training courses. • The Ship has conducted activities in Algeria and acted as a platform for the Tunisian Special Forces – the Unité Spéciale – Garde Nationale – for boarding training, and worked with the Tunisian patrol ship, Joumhouria, on lifesaving/rescue ex-

ercises. It also supported Operation SEA GUARDIAN (NATO’s maritime security operation in the central and eastern Mediterranean) in which the Ship gathered information about vessels’ movements to deter and counter terrorist activity. • In June, HMS TRENT operated in the Black Sea, working with Ukrainian and US-led exercises to bolster security in this region of vital strategic importance. It joined Exercise SEA BREEZE to develop the Ukrainian Navy’s ability to work with NATO units after it lost its operating base and two thirds of its fleet in 2014 after Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea. HMS TRENT worked with ships from the USA, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Italy, Georgia, Romania, Turkey and the UK. • Most recently, HMS TRENT sailed

from Varna, Bulgaria, for Exercise BREEZE. The multinational Bulgarian-led exercise includes participants from Albania, Belgium, Bulgaria, Georgia, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Romania, Spain, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom, United States, and Standing NATO Mine Countermeasuares Group 2 under Spanish Command in ESPS RAYO. • The Ship operates from Gibraltar as a regional hub, patrolling the Mediterranean, Black Sea, North and West Africa including the Gulf of Guinea. The Ship also operates from Crete and Cyprus to cover the full length of the Mediterranean.

Masterchef is back... We all love Masterchef – we love regular Masterchef, we love MasterChef: The Professionals and we really love Celebrity Masterchef...the odd noises Gregg and Jon make when they eat the questionable dishes that sometimes get served up and the fact that we’re always convinced we could do better (we couldn’t) are just some of the reasons we wouldn’t miss a single episode of BBC’s iconic cooking series. So, the great news is, Celebrity MasterChef will be back in 2021 and very soon - and with Katie Price competing this year, we get the feeling this series will be an absolute banger. This

Step up your kitchen game Good food doesn’t have to be complicated. With just a few simple tricks you can save time, money and hassle. From getting the most out of leftover pizza to pimping your lemons and making the perfect smoothie, these handy hacks might just change how you cook and eat...

Super smooth mash For those who would prefer to skip the arm workout that comes with mashing potatoes, using an electric hand mixer is an easy solution. As well as taking away all the effort, a hand mixer ensures lump-free mash every time. Pizza pizzazz Revive leftover, dried-out pizza by microwaving it with a mug of water. As the water evaporates, moisture fills the microwave, rehydrating the dry crust and giving you a gooey, cheesy pizza slice once more.

Butter up If you’re having a hard time with cold butter, use a grater to soften the perfect amount to put on toast or bread. It’ll make the butter easier to spread, without destroying your loaf in the process. This method is even used by chefs to make perfect buttery pastry. Sauce cubes Whether you’ve made too much pesto or have spare sauce from a jar, don’t throw your leftovers away. Pour them into an ice cube tray and you’ll always have some on hand – plus they’ll last far longer than if you kept them in the fridge. This trick also works well with garlic butter.

to prep, but there’s a speedy way to do it without fuss or waste. Cut the mango in half (on each side of the stone), slice a grid pattern into each half, then invert the fruit. You’ll be left with mango cubes popped up as pictured – simply slice them off and enjoy.

Microwave lemons Get more juice from a lemon by microwaving it on high for around 20 seconds. It’ll be warmer and softer than straight from the fridge, making the citrus fruit easier to squeeze. It’s a must-try hack if you’re making lemonade too.

non-soggy sandwiches No one likes a soggy sandwich. Reduce the amount of liquid seeping out from ingredients such as sliced tomato or cucumber by placing them between two pieces of paper towel for five minutes. This will soak up any excess moisture before they’re added to sandwiches. It’s also a good idea to spread butter, cheese or mayo onto the bread first – this acts as a barrier against soggier ingredients.

Smoothie prep Juices and smoothies are a nutritious way to start the day but prepping can be time-consuming. When you have a moment, chop and divide fruit and veg into individual food bags and store in the freezer or fridge. Take out as and when needed, adding extras such as yogurt, water or coconut milk before blending. Clean Tupperware If last night’s chicken stew or chilli has stained your storage container and hot soapy water just won’t shift it, reach for the baking soda. Wipe the inside with a smooth water-and-soda paste and allow it to sit for a few hours. This should get rid of any stubborn marks for good. hedgehog hack Mangoes can be a pesky fruit

Float test eggs To check if eggs are fresh, fill a bowl with cold water and try the ‘float test’. If the egg sinks to the bottom on its side, it means it’s very fresh. If your egg sinks to the bottom in an upright position, it means it’s not quite as fresh. If your egg floats, it means it has started producing rotting gases that lift the egg to the water’s surface, so it has most likely gone bad.

I haven’t seen my good friend since we all went into Lockdown. Now she is able to fly over and visit me, and we had planned a week away on the costas in a lovely hotel we’d been to many times. I’ve known her for years; we met at work and clicked straight away. She’s come over to me to Spain every year since, but of course the pandemic meant we haven’t seen each other

for a while. So, when she said she was coming over, I booked our usual hotel and have been looking forward to the holiday ever since. Except, this week she messaged me to tell me that she’d bumped into an old work colleague of ours, who’d joined our department before I left. I was aware that they’d stayed in touch after I’d gone. Then my friend said she’d invited her to join her on her trip to Spain. My

friend asked if I would book another room for this woman. I was very upset because I was looking very much to spending time with my friend as we’ve always done, and she didn’t even ask me before she invited this interloper along. I don’t even know her that well, and I didn’t particularly gel with her when she joined out department. I haven’t responded to the message yet, and would appreciate advice. hot; tell your friend how you feel about three being a crowd, and that you don’t even know this woman very well. Initially suggest that she make another arrangement to spend time with ‘her friend’, and that you and she stick to the original plan, and see what she says. Remember you don’t have to go along if she isn’t keen to cancel things with her friend, suggest that she go, and you and she will get together another time.

Alcohol use linked to Simone Biles focuses on mental health cancer, says study “Fewer than one in three people recognise alcohol as a cause of cancer,” says Harriet Rumgay, researcher at the International Agency for Research on Cancer, the specialised cancer agency of the World Health Organization. “That’s in the majority of highincome countries, and it’s probably even lower in other parts of the world.” A new study shows just how much of a risk drinking can be. At least 4 percent of the world’s newly diagnosed cases of esophageal, mouth, larynx, colon, rectum, liver and breast cancers in 2020, or 741,300 people, can be attributed to drinking alcohol, according to a study published in the Lancet Oncology. Men accounted for three-quarters of alcoholrelated cancers. Of the 172,600 alcohol-related cancer cases diagnosed in women, the vast majority, or 98,300 cases, were breast cancer. It’s the first time, Rumgay says, that research has quantified the risks of different levels of drinking. “Our study highlights the contribution of even relatively low levels of alcohol to the risk of new cancer cases,”

says Rumgay.

cancers, according to the study.

There are a few biological pathways that lead from alcohol consumption to a cancer diagnosis, according to the study. Ethanol, the form of alcohol present in beer, wine and liquor, breaks down to form a known carcinogen called acetaldehyde, which damages DNA and interferes with cells’ ability to repair the damage. Alcohol can also increase levels of hormones, including estrogen. Hormones signal cells to grow and divide. With more cell division, there are more opportunities for cancer to develop. Alcohol also reduces the body’s ability to absorb certain cancer-protective nutrients, including vitamins A, C, D, E and folate.

The study’s authors suggest that the numbers of alcoholrelated cancers are probably even higher than these estimates. “That’s because we didn’t include former drinkers in our main analysis, even though they may have an increased risk of cancer,” says Rumgay. When they further analyzed their data incorporating former drinkers and including the two cancers possibly linked to alcohol, the numbers went up significantly. “When we did the analysis and included former drinking, pancreatic and stomach cancers, the numbers increased to 925,000 alcohol-related cancers,” she said. That’s an additional 185,000 possible alcohol-related cancers, or 5 percent of all the world’s cancers.

Researchers found that the more alcohol people drink, the higher their risk of an alcoholrelated cancer. Drinking at least two and as many as more than six drinks a day, defined as risky to heavy drinking, posed the greatest risk of a future cancer. Even moderate drinking, two or fewer drinks a day, accounted for an estimated 14 percent, or 103,000 cases, of alcohol-related

Some of the highest proportions of alcohol-related cancers were found in Moldova and Romania, she said. But recent changes in taxing policy, which has increased the cost of alcohol in those countries, have caused a drop in alcohol sales. And that could foreshadow a future reduction in related cancers, she said.

Simone Biles has withdrawn from the individual all-around competition to focus on her mental health, USA Gymnastics announced. Her withdrawal comes after the 24-yearold -- one of the greatest gymnasts of all time -- stepped away from a dramatic team competition, citing mental health concerns as she attempts to protect “her body and mind.” USA Gymnastics said it supported her decision “wholeheartedly,” adding in its statement that Biles would be assessed every day. “After further medical evaluation, Simone Biles has withdrawn from the final individual all-around competition at the Tokyo Olympic Games, in order to focus on her mental health,” read a statement on the USA Gymnastics’ Twitter account. “Simone will continue to be evaluated daily to determine whether or not to participate in next week’s individual event finals. Jade Carey, who had the ninth highest score in qualifications, will participate in

her place in the all-around. “We wholeheartedly support Simone’s decision and applaud her bravery in prioritizing her well-being. Her courage shows, yet again, why she is a role model for so many.” Biles had been one of the favorites to win gold in Thursday’s final, having won every individual all-around competition that she has entered since 2013. After Sunday’s qualifying in Tokyo, Biles had finished first with a score of 57.731. She still has the opportunity to compete in other individual events during the remainder of the Games, having qualified for individual finals in each

apparatus: vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise. On Tuesday, Biles said that she was going to take the rest of the Olympics “one day at a time” as she looks to add to her haul of four gold medals won at the 2016 Rio Olympics. The eyes of the world were on Biles this week as she aimed to add to her remarkable legacy. However, her emotional interview after Tuesday’s team final put the issue of mental health front and center of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Earlier that day, Naomi Osaka, who has also talked openly about her own mental health struggles, was knocked out of the women’s Olympic tennis tournament. “Whenever you get in a high stress situation, you kind of freak out,” Biles told reporters on Tuesday. “I have to focus on my mental health and not jeopardize my health and wellbeing. “It just sucks when you’re fighting with your own head.”

Although there are variations on the time certain vehicles require the periodic inspection, taxis and hire cars for example require more checks than private cars to ensure their safety compliance, for most of us we can follow the standard periods. Mopeds – Which now includes certain electric scooters for example, as well as micro cars. These vehicles require their first inspection at 3-yearsof-age, then every 2 years thereafter. Motorcycles, quads and quadricycles – The first inspection is at 4 years, then every 2 years thereafter.

Private cars – Again, the first inspection is 4 years after registration, then every 2 years until the car is 10 years old, at which point the review is annual. You will normally receive a notification that your first inspection is due. Remember, if your vehicle goes beyond the required date, or your ITV has expired, you will not be permitted to drive it, not even to the test centre, and it must be carried on a grua, so it is worth making sure of the dates to avoid this.

Fines for overtaking on the right and ‘left lane syndrome’ The DGT is keen to remind drivers that driving in the wrong lane carries a significant fine. Spain’s governing traffic body warned that two frequent behaviours by drivers include driving in the middle or left lane and overtaking on the right. ‘Left lane syndrome’, as the DGT calls it, consists of driving in the middle or left lane, so that the road is obstructed by preventing the passage of other drivers. Other drivers are then forced overtake slow drivers incorrectly on the right. The DGT does fine motorists for both behaviours – left lane syndrome and right hand overtaking. Continuously driving in the left lane without allowing overtaking is classified as a serious offence by the General Traffic Regulations and carries a fine of 200 euros. Overtaking on the right is also classified as a serious offence, so the fine is also 200 euros. In fact, driving in the middle or left lane continuously and for no apparent reason carries a penalty of 200 euros as well, but overtaking on the right is more punishable, since in addition to the fine of 200 euros the driver loses four points from their licence card for the risk it entails for circulation. There are three cases in which it is possible to overtake in the right lane: - Within a city - When a vehicle indicates a left turn and occupies the corresponding lane to proceed with the manoeuvre - In traffic jams, in which it is not considered as overtaking.

Road ready? It is important to make sure our vehicles are always safe and ready for the road. Now is a good time to check on some of the basic mechanics. Most of these, such as oil and other fluids, should be checked when the vehicle is cold and has been stood for a short period. To help us out, the Institute of Advanced Motorists, IAM, has devised a clever little memory list to help you check your vehicle on a regular basis, and especially if it has been standing for a while. All you need to remember is POWDERY. We will explain what it means. P - Petrol For both drivers and riders, always make sure you fuel up before a long journey. You’ll need enough to get to your destination or the nearest petrol station. Of course your vehicle might be diesel, in which case you must check that. O - Oil Car drivers - When did you last do an oil check? Most new cars have the technology to let you know when your oil needs topping up. But for those with an older vehicle, make sure you’re checking the level regularly. Your handbook will give you the preferred method for your car. For bike riders, you can check you have the right amount of oil by using a dipstick or sight glass in the side of the engine casing. Remember to keep

the bike vertical when checking this by getting someone to sit on the bike whilst you check the oil. Bear in mind that overfilling will also cause damage, so top up slowly and check your fuel level regularly. W - Water Have you checked your vehicle fluid levels? For drivers, your car will alert you if you’re running low on coolant, but ideally, you shouldn’t let it get this low. Check water levels and buy coolant for your car and top it up whenever necessary. For riders, levels need to be checked if you have a water-cooled engine, ensuring the bike is vertical when you make the check. If you find that you’re low on water, remember never to use tap water - you’ll need a mix of water and antifreeze. D - Damage For both drivers and riders, look around your vehicle, checking your tyres and bodywork to ensure there is no visible damage. For riders, also remember to check your protective clothing and crash helmet to ensure they are intact. Remember it’s recommended that you replace your crash helmet every 3-5 years or if you’ve had a crash or dropped it. For car drivers, once you’re in your vehicle, make sure you have no warning lights pop up on the dashboard before you set off. e - electrics Whichever vehicle you’re driving or riding, check all the lights, preferably with a helper to operate the switches

or walk around whilst you do. Failing that, use the reflection of the lights in a window or a nearby car. For bike riders, remember to ensure your brake lights work from both controls. In addition to your lights, also check your horn and windscreen washers, remembering to be considerate of others when you do - waking up the neighbours or leaving puddles on the garage floor may not be popular. R - Rubber When did you last check your tyres? Both riders and drivers should look at tyre tread depth and overall condition before every journey to ensure they are road legal. Remember to check tyre pressure as well. Bear in mind this could change depending on the amount of weight your bike or car is carrying.

The legal limit on a bike is 1mm across three-quarters of tyre and visible tread on the rest. The legal limit on a car is minimum 1.6mm in a continuous band around the central three-quarters of the tyre. Tyre pressures for both bikes and cars should be tested when the tyres are cold, as the reading will be higher when they’re hot. Y - You Are you fit to drive or ride? Have you been under the weather? Ask yourself if you’re fit to be in control of your vehicle. Medication and tiredness will affect your driving or riding, and your concentration may not be 100% if you’re ill or stressed. Check that you’re fit to drive and take a break before you set off if necessary. For bike riders, if you’ve been out of practice for a few

months, then you may have lost your ‘bike fitness’. Make sure you are fit to ride your bike and remember to take it slow and steady until you’ve got to grips with it again. Whether it’s a car or bike, ensuring your vehicle is in tip-top condition will mean a much longer life for the parts and helps you enjoy your vehicle, worry free. Keep your service schedule up to date and don’t put off any replacements. Tyres should be kept in good condition, as performance will start to drop off before the legal limits of wear are reached. Don’t forget - the maintenance of your vehicle, so you have one less thing to worry about before you start a journey, is an important part of the ‘you’ in driving and riding.

Imanyo Golf Society “Anne Goldsmith Remembrance Rose Bowl”, 28th July at Alenda Match Fishing Report Abbey Anglers On Tuesday the 27th of July we made the 90 minute trip to The Embalse De Argos near to Carravaca in Murcia. This is one of the nicest and most prolific lakes in our local area. The day before had seen torrential rain in this and our area and we wondered how this would effect the fishing. Upon arrival there was clear evidence of the amount of rain that had fallen as all the pine needles had been washed down to the edge of the banks and several large puddles littered the access road. The match started very slowly for most of the anglers with very few fish caught in the first two hours but eventually the fish came on the feed. Winner on the day drawn on the cold side was Barry Smith. Barry fished the feeder with pellet or maggot for 22.76kg Yours truly Ian Brown was 2nd. Drawn on peg 1 on the warm side I caught twenty carp all on the slow sinking feeder with a 6mm pellet for

21.50kg but lost as many as I landed. In third place was the Graham Patterson with 16.46kg. Graham fished the method feeder with pellet or corn also on the cold side. The pairs match was won by myself and Barry with 34kg. Rods n Reels The following day we again fished the same venue and the same pegs. We felt that the fishing would be better on the second day and weights in general slightly improved. Winner on the day was Richard ´´Tricky Dicky¨ Woods. He fished paste on the pole on the cold side for a good weight of 32.72kg. After the match he had been that busy he was suffering from heat exhaustion due to drinking no water and was luckily revived by Paul Burton. This is a warning to all in this hot weather that you must keep hydrated.

In second place was Richards partner in crime Richard ´´Not so Tricky¨ King. Drawn on peg 5 on the warn side he took a steady stream of carp on the method feeder with corn for 27.54kg. I was third from peg one which is featured in the picture and yes I lost lots of fish in the reeds again. I managed 25.45kg but took to the water on at least 8 occasions to try and land fish. The pairs was won by Tricky and not so tricky with a great weight of 60.26kg. We would also like to thank the Hotel Argos for a great meal and stay. Further details can be found on our website abbeyangling.es ian Brown

This was thefifth year we have played for this trophy; Anne sadly passed away suddenly five years ago and is missed by all that knew her, many thanks to her husband Harry, son David and daughter Nicola for sponsoring the day in her name, David managed to join us and play this year due to travel restrictions being lifted to Spain. We had a good turnout for our visit to Alenda; the weather was fantastic for golf a pleasant 31 degrees with a light breeze. The course was in excellent condition from tee boxes to greens but the bunkers needed a little more sand. We played singles full handicap Stableford split into two groups, the overall scores between the groups were yet again very close. Winner of the Anne Goldsmith Remembrance Rose Bowl came from group A and was “Three Clubs” Sean McGuinness with another excellent score of 40 points, runner up was “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly with 38 points and third was “Keep It in The Family” Alan Ralph with 30 points. Winner of group B was Derry Quinlan with 36 points, runner up was “Cash Point” Alan Boyden with 35 points and third place went to Colin Pepperday with 34 points. There were 6 nearest the pins, three were won

by “Three Clubs” Sean McGuinness on holes 3, 7 and 18, there was no winner on hole 5, hole 12 went to “Keep It in The Family” Alan Ralph and hole 15 was won by “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly. Best front nine was won by “Three Clubs” Sean McGuiness with 23 points and best back nine went to Colin Pepperday with 20 points. The twos pot was won and shared, both players holed hole 13 in two shots and shared the pot of €20 and they were “The Wine Collector” Brian Court and “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly. Winner of the football card was Dons Ralph with Man Utd winning €40 and raising €40 for our charities of 2021. The singles knock out semi-final winner was Allan Boyden beating Mick Billins 5-4, he plays the winner of Gary Smith, Steve Day or Martin Gadney in the final. We would like to say thank you to Antonio and staff at Imanyo’s Bar for their hospitality and of course great food. TALES FRoM THE Top FLIGHT n chris darwen chris@costablancapeople.com

Can you smell it, folks? That’s the sweet scent of the Premier League season closing in and money being burned on random signings left right and centre. We have more transfer rumours than Team GB have medals in the Olympics for you to enjoy(?) today - feel free to join us in the mockery of most as, frankly, there are some crazy ones here today. I mean, Phil Jones being linked to another Premier League team? Loco. Up at Anfield, King Kloppo is getting understandably frustrated given the lack of activity in the market for Liverpool - who, you know, wouldn’t mind trying to win that title back. It’s all very well saying getting Virgil and Joe Gomez back is like “having new signings” but Jurgen would like some actual new signings.

going to need to find more than £25m to tempt the Saints - no matter how much JWP fancies it.

The club have been linked to West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen in the last week - no, he’s not a central midfielder and Wolves’ Adam Traore (no, he’s not either). Germany midfielder Florian Neuhaus is a central midfielder however, and can join the long list of other potential £30m+ signings that probably won’t happen this window. Still, Trent’s signed a new four-year deal - that’s something, no?

There’s lots more happening at Stamford Bridge as Tommy T has demanded Jules Kounde is signed from Sevilla - with Kurt Zouma being used as bait. However, Zouma isn’t keen on being bait for anyone and would much rather stay in London and wear the colours of West Ham instead.

Manchester City are waving a new contract under the nose of their keeper, Ederson - no doubt, that’ll get signed as efficiently as he plays the ball 100 yards out to Sterling’s feet with a single cursory glance forward. All the other talk at the Etihad continues to surround Jack Grealish and, to a lesser extent in the last seven days, Harry Kane. City are thought to have finally but £100m on the table to Villa who will accept it if Jack really, really wants to go - if not, they’ll happily tie him down to a new deal. In unrelated news, John Terry has quit as Villa’s assistant manager as he wants to spend some time preparing himself for a hot seat in the near future. He felt it would be unfaithful to Villa to be looking around whilst still employed by the club. I know, I know - that’s very unlike JT to reach that conclusion. New goalkeeping contracts seem to be all the rage as Villa want to get Emi Martinez sorted for many more years just in case Arsenal realise what a clanger they dropped letting him go and try and woo him back. Having signed Leon Bailey for £30m-ish, Dean Smith still wants more wide attacking options - it’s almost as if he thinks Jack would really, really like to play for City. Todd Cantwell of Norwich City could be on his way meaning that Villa could line up with two-thirds of a Premier League attack that got relegated two seasons ago. Smith is still very keen to get Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse up to the Midlands but is probably

Chelsea have continued their interesting trend of quirky third-choice goalkeepers by signing ex-Fulham stopper Bettenelli. Well, at least there won’t be any relocation costs for him.

Bizarrely, long-term target for everyone with money, Erling Haaland, has said that he hopes that links suggesting he might be joining Chelsea for £150m are “just rumours”. As much as that might cheer up Tammy Abraham, it’s unlikely to see his potential sale slowed down - Chelsea still want £40m but West Ham, Villa and Arsenal would rather not pay that - mind you, hold your line long enough Blues and you’ll find Arsenal probably will pay that and more. AC Milan still believe Hakin Ziyech wants out of a fight for a place at the Bridge and would much prefer life in Serie A and Trabzonspor are likely to be the next club to rent out Michi Batshuayi for a season. Over in Madrid, Manchester United have the guy who pestered Dortmund into eventually selling them Jadon Sancho delegated to a new task United believe a deal can be done on both Kieran Trippier and midfielder Saul Niguez, though Liverpool are quite right to remind everyone he is very much on their shortlist of midfielders they will not sign. There is also false hope at Old Trafford that because Ole has known Haaland since he was a baby that this could be enough to close the deal for the Norweigan goal-machine. It’s that kind of thinking that has pushed United forward since Sir Alex called it a day, after all. As ever, there’s been chat about Paul Pogba but, far more importantly, since United have confirmed the signing of Raphael Varane from Real Madrid, Eric Bailly wouldn’t mind a little reassurance about his future. Tottenham really need to get busy

otherwise they could have a shocker of a season, and are being linked to a striker who scored 20 goals in Serie A last season - but they were for Crotone who got relegated. In fairness, Simy is pretty decent and would be a great backup to Kane next season if, well, you know, Spurs manage to lock Kane in their empty trophy cabinet so he cannot physically sign for City. Having had a deal nailed on for Argentine defender Cristian Romero, it looks like that deal has stalled seriously, I do wonder what happens for Spurs once their new Director of Football has run out of people in Serie A to call. Arsenal also need to get busy though, they have spanked £50m on Brighton’s Ben White leading to little dances of joy at the Amex, messages in WhatsApp groups saying “they paid HOW MUCH???” and immediate plans to reinvest the money very sensible indeed. Lautaro Martinez won Serie A with Inter last season and Inter have expressed an interest in Hector Bellerin so a genius in the Arsenal recruitment department has put two and two together and come up with a £20m + Hector offer which reminded many of us of the time they offered £40,000,001 for Luis Suarez. Oh, it was turned down if you are interested. Arteta continues to “monitor” Schalke’s Matthew Hoppe which feels like a strange thing to be doing given that Schalke’s season has not started so nothing will have changed.

Crystal Palace, Brentford and Watford have been scouring the Olympics for any bargains and all agree that New Zealand’s Matthew Garbett might be a good bet. West Ham are the club laughably looking to give Phil Jones a Premier League lifeline - that said, it’s very much on a pay-as-you-play deal apparently, meaning it will probably cost them precisely nothing. Brighton need a goalscorer and Benfica’s Darwin Nunez is one of those so you can do the maths on this one. Leeds missed out on getting Conor Gallagher on loan from Chelsea so will have to make do with signing Lewis O’Brien from Huddersfield instead. Newcastle fans will be delighted by the reports that Steve Bruce is to be offered a new contract at St James’ Park. If they can tear themselves away from that anger for five minutes, they’ll learn that they are the preferred destination of Man Utd’s Axel Tuanzebe for a loan deal and that there is still a good chance of getting Arsenal’s Joe Willock back for another season though Monaco are said to be sniffing around on that one. Everton’s least Rafa-like player in the squad, James Rodriguez, has ruled out a return to Real Madrid this summer - presumably based on the fact that he isn’t good enough for Real Madrid anymore.

Potential outs at the Emirates include Reiss Nelson who is Patrick Vieira’s latest young, English muse and, still, Xhaka who could have walked to Roma and signed a deal by now. Unsurprisingly, Arteta is still keen to get Willian out of the club and, equally unsurprisingly, is struggling to find any other club stupid enough to pay his wages. And Real Madrid would love to get rid of Martin Odegaard for £40m or so and, guess what? They think Arsenal might be the punter of choice. Mind you, the Gunners are still being closely linked to Italy’s Manuel Locatelli - that’s if Juventus fail to stump up the cash to buy him.

Fabian Delph deserves some credit for becoming the more-hated 31-yearold international at the club with some of his recent social media commentary and Rafa remains unconvinced that Dutch right-back Denzel Dumfries is a player he wants to sign. True, Dumfries does like to venture over the halfway line. In the least shocking news of the week, Wolves’ £35m purchase of Fabio

Silva from Porto has been caught up in the investigation of many “suspect” Portuguese transfers in recent windows. Finally, Arsene Wenger is expected to turn down the chance to become the new Switzerland manager - there is some irony that the manager who never saw anything and would sit on the fence is turning down a job with the most neutral country in world football. Maybe it was just the thought of having to manage Granit Xhaka again?
