More than 163,000 young people to be vaccinated this week

the department of universal and Public health has summoned 163,870 young people and adolescents from 19 to 16 years old this week to be vaccinated against CoVid-19. in those vaccination centres where the age groups are smaller and the process is more advanced, people aged 15-14 will also be vaccinated. in the next seven days, a total

of 378,382 doses of the vaccine against Covid-19 are expected to be administered and of these, exactly 67 percent will go to people between 39 and 16 years old. the bulk of this week’s vaccines, a total of 309,423 doses are from the Pfizer laboratory. Most of them (specifically, 225,054 doses) will be used for people in the age groups between 39 and 16 years old.

the rest of the Pfizer vials (84,369 doses) will be used for those who could not be vaccinated on their allocated day due to an active infection, for new admissions to social and sanitary residences, professionals who join the health system this summer, as well as for second doses (about all of the age group 49 to 30 years). on the other hand, 63,974 doses

of Moderna’s vaccine will be given to people between 49 and 16 years of age. a residual amount will be used for professionals who join the health system, people with high-risk conditions and second doses for 49 to 30 years. With the 4,470 doses of astraZeneca this week, people over 60 years of age who have the second dose pending will continue to be vaccinated. Finally, 515 single doses of Janssen will be given to people from closed cohorts and those who must make international trips. without working as a team. thanks to the meritorious efforts of the health professionals and the responsibility of the public, which is complying with the measures in the majority, we are getting closer to the desired goal every day, said the Minister of universal health and Public health, ana Barceló. “in this final sprint, we must not give in to fatigue. We are accelerating the vaccination of young people and adolescents.”

Robber arrested in Torrevieja the Civil guard has arrested a 20-yearold ukrainian man in torrevieja as the alleged perpetrator of a continuous crime wave of robbery with forced entry. of the five crimes committed, four were committed while the victims were at home and in bed sleeping. the crimes were considered so serious that after his arrest, he was taken directly to prison.

it took only one month for the officers of the torrevieja Civil guard investigation department to arrest the man, who had been stealing from homes across the town since the end of July. it was not the first time the man had used this kind of tactic; he had robbed occupied houses before, however this time his arrest was more difficult due to his frequent change of address. More than once he was discovered inside the houses, which allowed victims to give a complete and detailed description of the robber to the police. on one occasion, an elderly woman discovered him crouching at the foot of her bed. the lady at first thought it was her son, but soon realised that it was a thief when the screen of her cell phone lit up when he unplugged it from the socket to steal it. the young man crept out of the room and jumped onto a low balcony, but not before being cheeky enough to offer the woman a smile as he made his escape. in another house, alerted by the

barking of his dog, a man woke up and went to the dining room where he found the accused trying to enter through the balcony. there was a struggle between them until the intruder jumped from the balcony onto the road below, despite the fact it was about five metres below. Later it was discovered that the robber accessed this house from another adjoining one where he had also gained entry and even interacted with the residents, including a child under 9 years of age.

location.

With this information, officers had no choice but to open the range to other provinces to try and track the robber down. the search ended with the arrest of the man as the alleged perpetrator of five crimes of robbery with forced entry.

thanks to the descriptions provided by the victims, together with the various steps taken, the man was identified. he was already known to the police and had been previously arrested for other similar crimes in torrevieja. the accused was living in a house without permission of the owners, who used the property as a holiday home. When police searched the property they found several items that the man had stolen during his crime spree and these will be returned to their rightful owners. the accused changed his place of residence every time he was arrested in order to try and stay one step ahead of the law. so when officers realised who was behind the crimes and visited his previous address, they discovered that he was no longer there and that he was believed to have moved to alicante. despite not being in the city too long, the man had already been arrested for similar crimes, and when he was released he fled to yet another

Coast to host famous Irish matchmaking festival singles of all ages and all nationalities looking for love are in for a real treat as the famous irish Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival is coming to Cabo Roig in october. hosted by the legend that is Willie daly, people travel from all over ireland to experience the annual event and now thanks to two local irish community leaders - Brian Kiernan and dermot Moore - Willie will be bringing his matchmaking magic to the coast. While the Festival has very much come of age over the years, moving with the times to appeal to people of all ages – its essence as a place to ‘meet, match and make a life’ remains true. Matchmaking is an irish tradition that’s as old as time. it began in Lisdoonvarna when visiting gentry came to ‘take the waters’ at this spa town and looked to match their children with someone suitable from the upper classes. Parents would bring their children together at social gatherings, sporting events and musical evenings – and all being well, courtships would blossom. Willie daly is ireland’s most famous matchmaker. his passion is to help hopeful

singles, of all ages and nationalities, find a life partner and have a lot of fun on the way. since he started out as a matchmaker 50 years ago, following in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps, Willie has set up around 3,000 marriages. While the festival has moved into the 21st century, Willie still believes in the old fashioned method of round the table talks with couples and getting the passion flowing by getting them dancing together. When you make contact with Willie he provides you with a simple matchmaking form which you fill in and then he refers to his 160 year old bible which has been handed down through the generations.

Willie will be in Cabo Roig over the october Bank holiday weekend to match-make for locals and will bring the famous bible with him and there will be two confession boxes at el Faro and the trinity Bar, where people can enrol. the organisers said: “el Faro and the trinity and all of the irish community and friends of the irish community would like to thank Willie for making this journey to see us here and hopefully there will be a match or two made over the course of the weekend. We hope you all enjoy the fun as many of us did over the years in Lisdoonvarna.” Further details will be printed in the Costa Blanca People and on the irish Community in orihuela Costa Facebook page.

AACC wig appeal President of local anti-cancer charity aaCC Maria Wilson had launched a wig appeal to ask ladies to donate any wigs they have to help those with cancer. Maria herself suffered breast cancer around 10 years ago and knows that losing your hair can be one of the most difficult side-effects to deal with psychologically. Maria said: “having cancer and chemo treatment makes you feel low enough and so losing your hair can make you feel you have lost your identity and femininity. expat ladies can feel at a complete loss as to where to go if they do experience hair loss. “You can disguise a mastectomy with clothes but having no hair is something that is on clear view to everyone unless you can get a good wig. i had no idea where to go and who to turn to when i lost my hair and watching a tV show recently about a hairdresser making wigs for cancer patients reminded me of the helplessness if felt.” Maria is appealing for wigs of all colours, lengths, shapes and styles to be donated to the aaCC; the charity is especially in need of longer length wigs. if you have wig please call Maria and she will sort collection. the wigs will then be cleaned and sanitised so they are ready to go. this leads to the second part of

the appeal, Maria is also looking for local hairdressers that would be kind enough to cut and style the wigs for free, to suit the needs of each person once a wig has been chosen. so far she has four: Lauren Benning, Villamartin, ann ashley, Lomas de Cabo Roig, Lynn Richmond, Playa Flamenca and Rebecca humphreys, La Fuente. anyone wishing to donate a wig or their hairstyling expertise can call Maria Wilson on: 633487595. Maria also wants to hear from ladies who are going through chemo and would like to arrange a trying and fitting session for a wig.

More new initiatives another new free service being offered by the aaCC in orihuela Costa is the tattooing of the areola once a breast reconstruction has been done. Very often, following a mastectomy the surgeons will

create a new breast and nipple. however, the nipple colour may not match the other breast and there is no areola to give the breast a natural look. Maria is now working with local beautician and permanent make up expert Jo-anne tomkinson who will create the areola through a tattoo-like process for free through an aaCC referral scheme. Maria is also setting up coffee mornings, starting in september at the charity’s office at the Commercial Centre Playa Flamenca to allow those with cancer to meet and share thoughts and experiences.

Sunshade for medical centre the department of health of the orihuela City Council, led by José galiano, has installed a protective sunshade so that patients waiting in long queues at the door of the orihuel Costa Medical Centre, Cabo Roig, can protect themselves from the glare of the sun whilst standing in line. the costal Medical Centre is experiencing high volumes of people needing to access the services it provides, particularly PCR and antigen tests and Covid vaccinations. this means that people had to wait, sometimes for hours, in the sun, enduring high temperatures typical of this time of year. José galiano said: “We have provided some shade because it was almost inhuman to expect people to stand out in the heat for so long. once again it is clear that orihuela Cost has an urgent

need for a second health centre for which we are still waiting for the regional Ministry of health to agree to.” the Councillor for health clarified that these queues do not only occur in high season as one might think, but they are also common in the autumn and winter months. “the healthcare pressure in summer is the same as the rest of the year. this centre is insufficient and added to the usual ailments of the patients, not only the residents but also the tourists, now we have the issues born of the pandemic. here there is an itinerant population, when some leave, others come, and numbers

often triple as is reflected in the consumption of water, electricity and the waste they generate. during the winter more than one hundred thousand people reside on the orihuela coast and in summer there are more than three hundred thousand. to serve such a large population, one health centre is totally insufficient,” the councillor explained.

Torrevieja hit and run the incident happened 9:30 in the evening on desiderio Rodríguez avenue in torrevieja. according to eyewitnesses a vehicle ran into young man on a motorcycle who, at the time, was carrying out his work as a take away food delivery driver. immediately after the car struck the man it sped away, leaving the scene and the man lying

injured in the road.

the victim fell from the motorcycle he was driving on impact and was left unconscious on the ground until the ambulance arrived. the emergency crew were able to stabilise him and transferred him to the torrevieja university hospital.

as for the identity of the car, the owners are still unknown. sources close to the scene of the events report that there were at least two people inside. in addition, several testimonies have provided the officers with the registration of the car. the severity of the injuries that the young man suffered is not known.

Continued amber list boosts tourism hopes the spanish tourism industry is breathing a sigh of relief after learning that the united Kingdom has not introduced stricter rules for spain as part of an update to its traffic-light system for travel announced on thursday (5th august). spain will for now remain on the amber list, meaning that fully vaccinated travellers may return from their spanish holidays without the need to quarantine. a high coronavirus infection rate had fuelled speculation that uK authorities might introduce more restrictions for returning travellers, but this has not been the case. the only change is the recommendation that passengers take a PCR test before their return rather than an antigen test, but this is not mandatory. spain is a major vacation destination for British tourists, who accounted for over 20 percent of all arrivals in 2019. But tourism was reduced to near-zero last year due to coronavirus restrictions that included a three-month home confinement between March and June. and recent industry figures show that foreign tourist arrivals hit a new low in the first half of 2021.

the uK has dropped down the list of top tourist source markets for spain in the latest figures, for June 2021. the spanish government released data recently showing the country received 2.2 million international tourists this June, 984.7 percent more than in the same month of 2020 when they were 204,272. germany sent the most (500,010) followed by France (438,560) and the netherlands (147,312). the uK, which typically sends more holidaymakers to spain than germany, accounted for 142,507 visits in June. in June 2019, there were 2,074,006 uK visitors to spain, and was the country’s number one source market. the fall in numbers means this year’s total June arrivals is less than 7 percent of June 2019 levels. the uK government said that no more changes to the trafficlight system would be made for at least three weeks. the new rules go into effect at 4am on 8th august. the rules initially apply to england, scotland and northern ireland, until Wales decides whether to follow suit. under the new updated travel

list, some countries are moving from amber to red, including Mexico, while France has been taken off the amber-plus list, which meant that returning travellers had to quarantine regardless of their vaccination status. Putting spain on this list had also been a possibility that uK authorities ruled out in the end. india, Bahrain, Qatar and the united arab emirates are being moved from the red list to the amber list as part of the changes, which come into effect from 04:00 Bst on 8 august. and germany, austria and norway are among seven nations being added to the green list.

does it feel like there’s so much to consider when looking to buy a home in spain?

By creating these two lists you’ll be able to make the decision yourself how va-luable the “nice to haves” are worth to you.

here’s an easy way to narrow down your search and focus more on what you “need to have” in a home, whilst discovering if it’s worth stretching your budget to get what you’d “like to have”.

is it worth spending more to get the extra bedroom that will only be used occa-sionally? or would you be better off financially by sticking to your “must haves” list and staying within your budget?

start by making a list of “must haves” and then make a separate list of “nice to haves.” this way you’ll be able to make yourself aware of what you’re willing to compromise on and what you absolutely need to have in your home.

Remember this… the more properties you look at, the more overwhelmed you’ll feel. Buyer beware! of course you’ll love the homes that are above your budget, so if you can’t afford them, don’t look at them!

this is an idea of what the checklists would look like:

Mar Menor petition Collecting 500,000 signatures in spain to get parliament to debate a citizen-driven bill is a difficult challenge. trying to do so in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic is almost impossible. But if the promoters of the legislative initiative launched to defend Murcia’s Mar Menor were fainthearted, they would not be taking on such a difficult task – the approval of a law that will grant Mar Menor legal personhood. this would allow the rights of the natural space to be defended in court, as though it were a person or business. nine months after the clock started ticking on the deadline for obtaining half a million signatures, this peculiar proposal has gathered just over 224,000 signatures. its proponents now have an extension of just three months to obtain another 276,000 signatures before 28th october – made even more difficult because digital signatures don’t count. despite being a unique ecosystem, the Mar Menor has suffered serious deterioration in recent decades, mainly due to excessive urban development and the run-off of nitrates from agriculture. in 2019, the situation became so

bad that thousands of fish and other marine life washed up dead on the shores due to the lack of oxygen. given the ineffectiveness of the current legal framework to preserve europe’s largest saltwater lagoon, teresa Vicente, a professor of philosophy of law, instigated the initiative to grant legal personhood to the Mar Menor, based on precedents such as the atrato River in Colombia or the Whanganui River in new

Zealand. in september 2020, the board of spain’s Congress of deputies approved the initiative, which is the first step in the process. But parliament will not debate the bill unless the 500,000 authenticated signatures stipulated by spanish law are obtained. the clock started on 28th october, 2020, after the initiative was validated by the Central electoral Board, but when the coordinators were all set to go out to gather

signatures, they came up against the pandemic, which saw the introduction of strict restrictions on movement. Luckily, things began to change a few months ago. the pandemic is still posing obstacles but they have more than 2,000 volunteers drumming up support. there are signature collection points in supermarkets, hairdressers, clinics, hotels and stores and even in vaccination centres. under spanish law, citizendriven bills need to collect 500,000 signatures within nine months – a deadline for the initiative that passed on 28th July. But the Central electoral Board granted an extension of three more months due to the restrictions caused by the pandemic, giving the activists until 28th october. in spite of the current strong pace, the coordinators are aware they have very little time left. they believe they have little more than two months to collect more signatures than they did in the last nine months, as they will have to allow time to collect those scattered across europe. the initiative’s website: ilpmarmenor.org indicates that there are now 400 points throughout the country where the public can sign.

We need to talk about your financial adviser… By Sam Kelly dipPFs, eFa, Ba (hons) Managing Partner Chorus Financial commission could be squeezed out of the client, whether through the funds themselves, or an investment bond – i.e., a spanish Compliant investment Bond, or an international Bond held under a QRoPs or siPP.

Looking back, it’s obvious i was fairly naïve when i first moved to spain in terms of just how the financial services industry works here. i have been an investor since my teens, more than 20 years now, and have successfully managedinvestment portfolios for many years. When i made the decision to move permanently to spain, i had no idea the journey it would take me on… beyond the 40 hour drive itself! i arrived here following a job offer from a large global financial advisory firm, well-known here in spain, with what i perceived to be a pretty good reputation. the truth is, within my first week i was both dumbstruck and horrified by the practises i saw. the entire advice model wasn’t built around client needs and outcomes, transparency and expertise, it was built around how much undisclosed

i immediately realised i could not remain at this company, so quickly began speaking with the other major firms here in spain. to my amazement i found that every firm i spoke with had exactly the same approach. however they dressed it up, and however well they presented their recommendations, these plans were basically all the same. a bond with a tie-in and a limited fund choice, both of which paid enormous commissions to the adviser whilst the client ultimately saw sub-optimal returns. this wasn’t the type of career i wanted. the reality is, i was already very comfortable in terms of my personal finances, and i hadn’t moved to spain for some ‘get-richquick’ scheme. i was here because my family have always had a close connection with spain, my mother has lived here for decades, and every time i got off the plane, when that

warm air hit me, it made me feel like i was already home. i was here to build a life and build a client base who would want to remain with me for many years, not discover a few years down the line that i had ripped them off! sadly though, that is the case for so many of you living here, and you probably don’t even realise it yet. spain has had no law requiring fee and commission disclosure like we had in the uK, and many firms deliberately targeted our communities for this very reason. it would not be uncommon to see a client who had been tied in for 5, 8 or 10 years to a spanish investment bond, QRoPs, even an international siPP, who had signed paperwork that generated as much as 13% commission for their adviser on the very first day – a combination of bond and fund commissions. With no other company out there that i wanted to join, Chorus Financial was founded. Chorus was built off a vision of ethical, high quality, transparent advice. We have worked tirelessly for many years now to educate our communities here

in spain, and on two occasions we have won major european awards for those efforts. sitting here today writing this article, itfills me with so much prideto knowthat Chorus has flourished to become one of the most trusted and successful financial advice companies in europe, from our offices here on the Costa Blanca. our vision and promise continues to be that we will advise you to the best of our abilities, always promising to put you first, with full fee transparency, value and the best investment portfolios available to you. Whether you’re looking for a new pension or investment recommendation, or have an existing plan, perhaps a QRoPs, siPP or spanish investment Bond from companies like seB, Quilter (formally oMi), Lombard international or others, Chorus can help you. to discover how Chorus can transform your financial future, email me on s.kelly@chorusfinancial. es, call +34 664 398 702, or visit www.chorusfinancial.es for more information.

GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP sterling was a bit of a two-trick pony this week. there were the purchasing managers’ indices and the Bank of england’s monetary policy announcement. investors were not greatly surprised by anything they saw or heard. the Boe announcement had the greatest impact because its influence was not restricted to midday on thursday: there was conjecture aplenty both before and after the event itself. on the whole investors liked what they heard from the central bank and sterling was thursday’s top performer. the view going into the meeting was that it was a fairly neutral meeting with no fireworks, but close attention was paid to the language used around inflation rising. Further clarity on the state of the economy it seems is what the committee is waiting on though, because as expected the Boe left Bank Rate unchanged at 0.1% by a unanimous decision and only one member voted to reduce the scale of asset purchases. the bank does, however, foresee “some modest tightening.” Looking ahead to future meetings, eyes will be on whether the Boe governor can shed more light on the eventual path towards tighter policy, and whether asset sales might come before higher interest rates. outside of the Boe news, PMi readings put manufacturing three and a half points lower on the month at 60.4 and services down by three points at 59.6. on average, it was just about unchanged on the week, adding a third of a euro cent and losing a third of a us cent.

EURO it was a case of could-do-better for the euro, which lost an average of 0.2% to the other major currencies and gave up a third of a cent to sterling. it was not that the euro did anything particularly wrong; rather, it failed to live up to the expectations of analysts, who predicted better results than europe was able to deliver. it could be argued that investors were unduly harsh in their treatment of the euro. in absolute terms most of the economic data were good. gross domestic product expanded by a provisional 2.0% in Q2, beating the forecast 1.5% growth. german retail sales went up by 4.2% in June, more than twice as much as expected. PMis for manufacturing in germany and euroland were strong, though off their highs. Markit’s services and composite PMis for the eurozone in July were both higher than the previous month, at 59.8 and 60.2 respectively. the report’s heading boasted that “eurozone grows at fastest rate since June 2006”, and in most circumstances it would have been enough to lift the euro. however, investors were in a mood to find fault, and because analysts had predicted even higher readings of 60.4 and 60.6, the market sent the euro a third of a cent lower against the dollar. the real problem it seems laid in the services PMis. germany and europe both fell short of analysts’ forecasts, and although the composite measure showed euroland economic activity growing at the fastest rate since June 2006, investors preferred to believe that it should have been growing even more quickly.

Biggest monthly drop in unemployment the spanish labour market continues to show signs that it is bouncing back from the devastating impact of the coronavirus crisis. the average number of workers who signed up to spain’s social security system, considered a sign of job creation, rose to 19,591,728 in July – the highest figure on record. the last time social security affiliations were this high was in July 2019, when there were 19.5 million contributors. in other words, there are around 60,000 more affiliations now than two years ago. on the unemployment side, figures show that more than 3.4 million people are jobless in spain, compared to just over three million in July 2019. But this figure is falling month on month. the number of registered unemployed people dropped 197,841 since June – the highest monthly decline on record. indeed, this number has been falling nonstop since February, when it broke the four-million mark. in the past three months, the number of unemployed has dropped by nearly half a million. and there are now 365,636 fewer jobless people compared to last year.

it is important to note that these figures do not include workers who are on the government’s eRte job retention scheme, which was implemented last year to offset the economic effects of the coronavirus pandemic. the scheme has saved thousands

of businesses from going under during the pandemic, particularly in the hard-hit tourism industry, but there are concerns unemployment will spike when it comes to an end. an average of 339,000 workers were furloughed in the month

of July, according to the data released by the social security Ministry. the data on spain’s labour market has also shed light on the role of women in the workforce. in June, the number of female workers signed up to the social security system rose to a record-high 9,076,939. although this number fell by around 3,000 in July, the percentage of women in the workforce is still higher than it was last year. in June and July, the share of female affiliations rose 5.2 percent and 4.8 percent, respectively, compared to the same months in 2020. despite this, women still only make up 46.31 percent of social security contributors, a figure that has only slightly risen in the past decade from 45.11 percent in 2011. What’s more, although women are the minority in the workforce, they represented 60 percent of the unemployed in July and 52 percent of all furloughed workers. experts say this is due to the over-representation of women in sectors that have been hardest hit by the pandemic, such as hospitality. these sectors also tend to have lower salaries and less recognition.

Pioneering prostate treatment Guardamar uses drones stop drowning at Quirónsalud Alicante Quirónsalud alicante is employing the pioneering Rezum technique for treating benign prostate hyperplasia. Benign prostate hyperplasia (BPh) also called prostate gland enlargement - is a common condition as men get older. an enlarged prostate gland can cause uncomfortable urinary symptoms, such as blocking the flow of urine out of the bladder. it can also cause bladder, urinary tract or kidney problems. the Rezum technique is a minimally invasive, fast and safe procedure that does not require hospital admission. the revolutionary treatment is now available in Quirónsalud alicante hospital’s urology department, allowing the treatment of BPh without impacting the patient’s urinary system or sexual function. the technique lasts approximately 10 minutes, and is performed through the urethra under controlled sedation. the treatment consists of the injection of water vapour into the prostate, which causes tissue necrosis (cell death), solving the problems caused by the growth of the prostate in the patient and eradicating related symptoms. the goal of the medical team of urology professionals at Quirónsalud alicante and Quirónsalud torrevieja hospitals is to treat BPh in the least invasive way possible. therefore, the Rezum and green laser techniques employed by Quirónsalud are both

effective and efficient.

What is benign prostate hyperplasia? Prostate hyperplasia is benign (noncancerous) enlargement of the prostate gland, and it is a common disorder in men. so much so that it affects more than 50 percent of the male population between 50 and 60 years of age, and up to 90 percent of men over 80 years of age. Who is the Rezum system suitable for? treatment with the Rezum technique is indicated for patients with Benign obstructive hyperplasia who do not want to continue with the drug treatment and the secondary effects caused by the medication – such as impotence, decreased libido, hypertension etc. it is also suitable for young patients; patients at high risk of bleeding; and with other illnesses or undergoing treatment for other conditions. this technique represents a great advance in the treatment for benign prostate hyperplasia and a hope for men with this condition who are concerned about the preservation of the functions of their prostate. Advantages of the Rezum technique the benefits of the Rezum technique, as it is a minimally invasive technique, are many:

- safe and effective procedure, reducing side effects. - Low risk of bleeding and complications. - alternative to strong oral medication and traditional surgery. - administered under sedation. - short surgical time. - it does not require hospitalisation (outpatient treatment). - Progressive improvement of urinary symptoms with rapid recovery and return to normal daily life. - it does not produce sexual impotence or definitive urinary incontinence. - Preservation of ejaculation in 95 percent cases. to determine if a patient is a suitable candidate for the Rezum technique, they must first have a consultation with the urology specialist. it is advisable for men over 40 years of age who feel discomfort, even minimal, to carry out an annual check-up with the urologist to rule out any type of problem.

Quirónsalud Alicante Urology Service the urology service of the hospital Quirónsalud alicante has the team and the necessary technology to address diseases of the urinary and retroperitoneal system in men and women. More information is available at: info.alicante@quironsalud.es or by phone on: 966 972 900.

the president of the generalitat, Ximo Puig, has announced the launch of a pilot program that will allow the use of drones to stop drowning on the beaches of 10 coastal municipalities of the Valencian Community. the pilot project aims to carry out support work for first aid and rescue services through unmanned aircraft on the beaches of guardamar del segura, dénia, Jávea and Benidorm in the province of alicante. the project will last for three months and run from Monday to sunday. it can be adjusted to the needs of each municipality and its execution will be coordinated by the aVsRe. the drones will work together with the rescue services on these beaches to deploy surveillance support tasks in the bathing area and launch floats to bathers in risky situations. the ‘stop drowning’ campaign seeks

to make citizens aware of the need to act “prudently” to avoid dangerous situations. Puig recalled that drowning is currently the third highest cause of mortality in the world in boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 14 years of ages. the Minister of the interior also added that the objective of this awareness campaign is to ensure that members of the public realises that “reckless behaviour can lead to fatal outcomes and that in most cases, these deaths could have been avoided with responsible behaviour, such as respecting the flags, avoiding going into the sea without a lifeguard or if you have been drinking alcohol.” this year 23 people have already died from drowning in the Region, as at 31st July and another 61 died last year. drowning is one of the ten leading causes of death worldwide, according to the Who.

Gemma Collins dreams of Holly’s job on ‘This Morning’ Gemma Collins is reportedly dreaming of taking over Holly Willoughby’s presenter spot on This Morning. The Only Way Is Essex star recently admitted how much she admires the TV star and even copied Holly’s bob-style hair cut. Now there are reports Gemma would love to be considered for a job on This Morning is Holly ever decides to step down. “She loves Holly and feels as though getting her job would be like taking over from TV royalty,” a source close to Gemma revealed to a UK magazine. “There’s so much gossip going around the TV industry right now that ITV bosses are lining up a replacement for Holly, should she ever go, and Gemma wants to put herself at the top of the list to be considered. “She wanted to get her hair changed to look more like Holly to convince producers that she’s a serious

contender. “And she’s also been experimenting with a more sophisticated and muted look, because she knows that some of her outfit choices can be quite loud and garish.” Gemma’s popularity has grown since she starred in The Only Way Is Essex and the self-confessed diva has been working hard to transform herself through an intensive health and fitness regime. The 40-year-old star has shed a few stone and has also revealed she would love to become a mum for the first time having found love – at the second time of asking – with boyfriend Rami Hawash. Acording to the source, Gemma knows that being a good presenter is not all about her hair, health and fashion sense. She wants to show TV bosses that she has a far more “serious side” to her “OTT television persona”.

Spain’s regions divided Business made easy over Covid entry checks in Spain Demanding proof of being Covid-free to access bars, cafés and restaurants has opened up a new legal front in Spain, where some regional governments are introducing the measure amid a fifth wave of coronavirus infections, while others vehemently oppose it. The High Court of the Canary Islands provisionally suspended the regional government’s recent decision to make customers show evidence of Covid vaccination, a recent negative test or recovery from the disease in order to enter dining, sports and cultural establishments. The court cited privacy issues involved in disclosing personal health information to access leisure activities. In response, the regional government said it would challenge the court’s decision. Government spokesperson Julio Pérez noted that “for a year now, people have been asked for a certificate or negative test to stay in island accommodation, besides the controls at ports and airports. And many public and private centers ask for information or check people’s temperature.” Spain’s northwestern region of Galicia recently adopted a similar measure, without

running into objections from the regional court there. In Galicia, a vaccination certificate or negative coronavirus test is needed to enter indoor spaces of bars and cafeterías in 36 municipalities. Cantabria, Melilla and Andalusia are considering similar moves, the Efe news agency reported. Murcia and Catalonia are waiting for a common framework to regulate the measure, while Extremadura, the Basque Country and the Valencia region openly oppose it. At a meeting of central and regional health officials, Health Minister Carolina Darias said the EU pass is meant exclusively to facilitate travel between European countries. France and Italy will start demanding proof of being infection-free to enter bars and restaurants starting in August, while Germany is considering it. In Austria, showing proof of vaccination, recovery, negative tests or the EU pass is already mandatory to access everything from hotels to hair salons. Experts divided The legal implications of asking customers for health data have created a division of opinion, much as with

other measures to fight the coronavirus pandemic such as curfews and confinements. Elviro Aranda, a professor of constitutional law at Carlos III University in Madrid, says it is a matter of balancing the interests at play. “On the one hand, freedom of commerce, of moving around, of going to a venue; on the other hand, preserving lives. Does it affect constitutional rights? Yes, it does. But the real question is, is it acceptable? In my viewpoint, it is.” Another question is whether such measures make sense from a health point of view. José Martínez Olmos, a former secretary general of Health, feels that they are really economic measures aimed at helping out the food and drink sector, since being vaccinated “is not insurance against getting infected.” Fernando García López, an epidemiologist at the Carlos III Health Institute, thinks that asking for the certificate to access leisure activities could be an acceptable incentive to get more people vaccinated and reduce transmission. “It would be more of a problem to demand it in school or work settings, which are essential activities,” he said.

Starting a company may only need as little as €1 in capital once a planned new law comes into effect and which is seeking to encourage entrepreneurs and provide greater protection against insolvency through nonpayment by corporate clients. The forthcoming Law of Business Creation and Growth, currently being discussed and worked on in the Council of Ministers, seeks to ‘remove obstacles’ in the ‘establishment and economic viability’ of companies. One issue that most threatens this ‘viability’, the government recognises, is lack of cashflow and solvency where firms are not paid by their clients within the legal maximum of 60 days – which reduces to 30 days in some circumstances. This is a particularly serious problem for the self-employed, sole traders and small businesses, where they are owed money by big companies they do work for and effectively allow these to fail to pay up on time – or even at all – since they fear losing a major customer or ruining their relationship with the corporation, the Council of

Ministers argues. The system will allow for fines and penalties for those firms which fail to pay on time, and as public authorities will detect these situations and apply the punishments, it will not be up to the person or small business waiting for the money to take action at their own expense and

risk of losing a corporate client – they will not be able to prevent, or have any influence in, these fines and penalties. Also, the legislation will create an out-of-court system for conflict resolution, which will mean a sole trader or small company will not have to risk hundreds or thousands of euros in suing a corporation for money it is rightfully owed and lose these expenses if the debtor still does not pay up. One major change the

Law of Business Creation and Growth will bring in is to end the requirement for a minimum capital sum of €3,000 for setting up a limited company – for young adults especially, with innovative new ideas and plans for a start-up venture, this figure is likely to be way beyond their reach, but it is expected that they will soon be able to register their firm for the nominal sum of €1. And they will be able to create the company online and in as little as 10 days, rather than waiting months to get off the ground and incurring costs whilst not earning in the meantime. The Council of Ministers is also examining a wider range of sources of finance for businesses, since the immense majority of firms are totally reliant on commercial loans from high-street banks. Over a third of Spain’s workforce is self-employed, and more than 75 percent of companies are small or mediumsized, usually family-run or sole trader-run, meaning they have limited capacity for creating jobs and financial setbacks can threaten their very existence.

Most popular beers from around the world It’s probably not a surprise to most, but beer is big business. It’s a constant when travelling around the majority of the world, and every nation has its own spin on the classic pint. But how do you know which beer to pick when you arrive in a different country? Spain Let’s start with our adopted home, here in Spain; Cruzcampo is a beer with origins in Seville, where it was first produced in 1904. It is mainly consumed in the Andalusia region from where it originates, but is popular throughout Spain. Denmark Tuborg dates back to 1880, when it was first introduced. Named after a Copenhagen inn from the 1690s, it is now a beer that is widely exported to a variety of countries. India Kingfisher is also popular in many other countries besides India. It is especially popular in the UK, where it is one of the best-selling beers in Indian restaurants. Australia Despite its name, Victoria

Bitter is actually a lager. Though the vast majority of sales in Australia, it is also available in New Zealand, Bali, Indonesia, and the UK. Philippines Red Horse is an extra strong beer, at over 8 percent. It is the first extra-strong beer in the Philippines, and is distributed to many different countries including Japan, China, and Singapore. Belgium Jupiler was founded in 1966, and accounts for 40% of Belgian beer sales. However, it is not a widely exported beer. The Belgian beer Stella Artois has been exported around the world far more. Portugal Sagres is named after a small village in the Algarve, and was established in 1940. It is now exported to many different countries throughout the world. Greece Mythos is quite a young beer, the brand having been established in 1997. It is mainly sold within Greece, but also exported to several other countries around the world.

France Kronenbourg 1664 dates back to 1952. It is mainly produced in Obernai, France, but is also made under license in both Australia and the UK. Italy Moretti was founded in 1859, and was owned by the Moretti family until it was sold in 1989. It is now a huge brand and widely sold and distributed in many countries worldwide. Venezuela Polar beer has been manufactured since the 1940s. Mainly sold in Venezuela, it is owned by Empresas Polar, who also sell Pepsi for the Venezuelan market. Kenya Tusker belongs to the Diageo group, and is their best-selling beer brand in Africa. Tusker has also been sold in the UK market for over a decade. Brazil Skol is not remotely Brazilian, yet due to some clever marketing campaigns, it managed to overtake Brahma to become the best-selling beer in the country.

Drink hot beverages to cool you down With temperatures soaring, finding ways to help keep cool during a heatwave is paramount. Water will always be strongly advised particularly during sweltering days, but could a warm beverage also help keep you cool? It might seem counterintuitive, but experts advise putting on the kettle and making yourself a cup of coffee when feeling overheated. Dr J. W. Langer, a Danish physician, nutritional expert and lecturer in medical pharmacology at the University of Copenhagen said: “It is a common belief that drinking caffeinated coffee can lead to dehydration. The mild, short-term diuretic effect of caffeine has been described an “unproven myth. Scientific evidence looking at the effects of caffeine on fluid balance does not support this commonly held belief.” Black coffee contains more than 95 percent water and, according to research, when consumed in moderation, does not lead to dehydration. It is therefore implied that a cup of coffee can help contribute to a person’s daily fluid balance. Moderate coffee consumption is typically defined as

three to five cups per day, based on the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) review of caffeine. A critical review found that a daily intake of 300mg of caffeine (the amount found in approximately three regular cups of coffee) induces only a mild, short-term diuretic effect, similar to that of water, with no significant effect on overall fluid balance. Additionally, there is no evidence that caffeine is detrimental during exercise in hot climates when fluid losses occur. More research suggests that moderate caffeine consumption does not alter total body water and fluid distribution and drinking a variety of caffeinated beverages, such as coffee, can contribute to meeting the

body’s requirement for fluids. Exercising in hot or humid weather is hard work, but there is evidence which shows that drinking coffee can enhance exercise performance. The caffeine in coffee can help improve muscular endurance, movement velocity and muscular strength, sprinting, jumping and throwing performance, as well as a wide range of aerobic and anaerobic sport-specific activity. The high levels of caffeine in coffee significantly improve the ability to burn fat during exercise too. Whilst caffeine itself may have a mild diuretic effect, the contribution to overall fluid intake from a cup of coffee is notable. A study found no significant differences in measures of hydration status between those who drank coffee or those who drank water, concluding that coffee consumed in moderation by regular male coffee drinkers had similar hydrating qualities to water. Other foods to help keep you cool in a heatwave include: cucumbers, strawberries, watermelons, courgettes, pineapples, mangoes, green peppers, oranges.

Guardamar optician helps detect cancer When optician Lisa James was approached by her concerned sister who was suffering redness in one eye, she actually discovered something far more sinister. Lisa, optometrist and director of Specsavers Ópticas in Guardamar, raised the alarm when her sister Joanne Stapleton sent a photo of her eye to check everything was ok. Lisa looked closely at the image, and although the redness was nothing to worry about, she noticed a lesion near the eye, which she suspected was a common type of skin cancer called basal cell carcinoma, also known as rodent ulcer. Lisa advised Joanne to visit her doctor, as left untreated it could damage skin and tissue. Joanne was quickly referred to a specialist for assessment, who confirmed Lisa’s diagnosis and Joanne underwent surgery to have the skin cancer removed. Joanne is fine and no further treatment is required, but she will continue to have six-month check-ups with the specialist. Speaking about the moment she spotted the skin cancer, Lisa says: “I was so pleased that Joanne sent me through the picture of her eyes and I

was able to identify the basal cell carcinoma. It is the most common form of skin cancer that appears as a small, nonhealing crusty spot. On close inspection you can see the edges roll inwards and the centre has a crusty pit in the middle. They can grow very slowly, but they continue to ulcerate the surrounding skin and grow bigger over time. Left untreated they become invasive and destroy skin and bone. “It is something I look out for during an eye test, as they can form on the face of glasses wearers where there are pressure points, for example where the nose pads and bottom of frames rest.” Lisa says that it is not only glasses wearers that are at risk. Basal cell carcinoma can also appear on the eyelids and the cheeks, and any other part of the body exposed to UV radiation. She continues: “They aren’t usually malignant, although in rare cases they can become life threatening, so it is important to have them investigated and removed for analysis and to stop them spreading. They are caused by damage, which is caused by overexposure to UV radiation from the sun and

using sunbeds. Skin protection with high UV blocking creams and large sunglasses are recommended to protect the eyes and delicate skin around the eye area from dangerous UV radiation.” Lisa says it is important to contact an optometrist if you have any concerns about the health of your eyes or your vision. Regular eye tests are essential for clear, comfortable vision. They are an important health check too - the optometrist checks the health of your eyes and can find indications of other medical conditions, so can refer you for further tests and treatment if necessary. It’s recommended to have an eye test every two years from the age of three upwards and then annually after the age of 70, or if you have any medical conditions which could affect your sight. Specsavers Ópticas in Guardamar is located on Avda. País Valenciano 43Bajo, Guardamar Del Segura and offers complete eye tests free of charge. You will also find stores in Javea, Calpe, Benidorm, Torrevieja and La Zenia on the Costa Blanca. Visit www.specsavers.es to find your nearest store.

Summer driving: Fact or Fake Summer is Spain is guaranteed to herald the annual round of online hoaxes about traffic rules. It’s the time of year when mass confusion abounds about whether you can drive in flipflops or whether you can be fined for hanging an arm out of a window – nobody is quite sure, and social media posts and viral messages and memes only add to the chaos. Fact or fake? The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), part of the transport

ministry, can fine you for not wearing a mask in the car if you’re travelling with people from outside your household. A bit of both: The DGT cannot and will not fine you, because it’s not a traffic offence – it’s a public health law. This means the Guardia Civil can, and possibly will, although they’re likely just to tell you all to put your masks on and warn you that a repeat failure to do so will cost you. Don’t take the chance – of a fine, or of infecting each other inside

the car. Fact or fake? Throwing cigarette ends out of the window, not having your driving licence on your person, or driving with more passengers than your vehicle is designed to carry, can attract fines. Fact: All these are driving offences for which you will be fined. Concerning the first of these, remember hot summers carry a forest fire risk, and punishment by law for starting one negligently, even if not deliberately, is extremely stiff. Fact or fake? You can be fined for driving whilst wearing flip-flops or in bare feet, driving whilst naked from the waist up, drinking from a water bottle whilst at the wheel, or hanging a hand or an elbow out of the window. Fake: There’s no specific law about any of these in Spain, and these behaviours are not automatically subject to fines. But if doing so affects your being able to drive safely, or prevents others from driving safely, a police officer may consider you should be fined and it will be up to him or her to decide if this is the case. Driving safely and without creating a danger to others whilst shirtless or in flip-flops will not get you fined, police stress. On the other hand, driving in other types of shoe which are so painful or uncomfortable that they distract you dangerously, or which keep getting caught on the mat and stop you being able to brake suddenly, might well get you a fine, but in these situations, it is at the discretion of the officer. Sticking an arm or an elbow out of the window can be dangerous in the event of a collision, as a car slamming into your limb at speed could literally sever it straight off, so this is best avoided. Pop your air-con on instead.

Drones that will monitor the roads The General Directorate of Traffic has finalised the distribution throughout the Spanish territory of the 39 surveillance drones -28 more than in 2020- which will be based at the air units and / or in the traffic sectors of the Guardia Civil to support the action of the twelve traffic helicopters. Coinciding with this deployment, the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, attended a demonstration at the DGT headquarters of the operation of these devices, of Spanish manufacture and technology, which made Spain a pioneer country in their use in traffic functions. In May 2018 the drones began to be used in test mode and since August 2019 they are used for the surveillance and detection of infractions. Drones are designed to detect reckless driving behaviour and to monitor traffic in those sections with a high risk of accidents and on roads with a higher traffic of vulnerable users, in particular cyclists, motorcyclists, and pedestrians. They are also used to monitor and support regulation in operations and special events in which a high number of road movements are concentrated; for ordinary regulatory missions complementary to those carried out by helicopters; and to support emergency situations that, due to their severity, significantly affect the circulation and safety of road users. The DGT has trained 35 personnel in the piloting of this type of aircraft and 60 personnel in the handling of the cameras that these systems integrate. The General Directorate of Traffic is accredited by the State Agency for Aviation Safety as an operator of remotely piloted aircraft systems. Likewise, the DGT helicopter unit is a pilot training organisation for

the issuance of basic and advanced certificates for piloting drones. How do they work? The commissioning of these aircraft is carried out by a pilot, who is in charge of handling the flight controls, and an operator who operates the camera, both functions that can be carried out both by personnel from the General Directorate of traffic and by officers of the Guardia Civil Traffic Group, after obtaining the required certificate. The infraction captured by drones may be notified immediately by an agent of the Traffic Group of the Guardia Civil or be processed later by the competent authorities. All sanctions will have the corresponding frame with the evidence of the offence committed by the driver.

The 39 drones will be distributed throughout the geography, except the Basque Country and Catalonia, communities with the transferred powers. Each DGT helicopter patrol based in A Coruña, Zaragoza, Valladolid, Seville, Malaga and Valencia will have two drones to carry out missions in their local environment and area of influence (neighbouring communities). The central base in Madrid will have 15 aircraft that, in addition to flying over the roads of the Community of Madrid and Castilla la Mancha, will provide support to the rest of the provinces of the national territory that need it. For their part, Cantabria, Asturias and Extremadura will have two drones per area; and the island areas of the Balearic and Canary Islands, with three units each. They all work at a height of 120 meters and their propellers allow them to reach 80km / h. They can withstand temperatures between 20 and 45

What is the elephant effect? You have possibly heard of stories of drivers being fined for having their shopping on the back seat of the car, or for having a dog incorrectly secured, and other similar reasons, and the question always arises as to why. We can explain the most common reason for these fines being education through enforcement to raise awareness of a very serious problem, and like all traffic law it is because it is

unsafe, as you will see when we explain a phenomenon known as the “elephant effect”. The Elephant Effect is the result of the laws of physics that cause an object thrown at high speed to multiply its weight compared to if it were stationary. This means that any loose object inside the vehicle becomes a dangerous projectile that puts the safety of the occupants of the vehicle

at risk in case of harsh braking or a sudden stop in the event of a collision. To explain it another way, even though your vehicle may slow down or stop abruptly, loose objects will continue to move in the direction of travel driven by the momentum and will weigh more than if they were sat still. When we talk about loose objects, we don´t only mean shopping, or animals, the same applies to people who are not secured, such as rear seat passengers, which is where the “Elephant Effect” becomes more apparent, as if a passenger in the back seat is thrown forward through a collision their weight may multiply to around 4,000 kilos, the weight of an elephant. Let us talk about the science bit. A loose object inside the car can multiply its weight by between 30 and 50 times in a crash at 50 kilometres per hour. Here we have some examples of what that means: A box of bottles weighing 18 kilos will impact the windshield with the same force as if a cow of 540 kilos.

degrees. They have an autonomy of up to 40 minutes, a period after which the battery is changed and they can resume flight immediately. Although the range of action of the DGT drones can reach 10 km, currently the Air Media Unit maintains a line of sight in all of them that goes between one and two kilometres. Pioneers in use for traffic offenses Since the start of the drone traffic surveillance activity in 2018, the DGT has accumulated 500 flight hours with these systems, has monitored more than 55,000 vehicles and has detected more than 600 infractions. It

has become one of the most effective means of detecting the use of mobile telephony behind the wheel (they represent 12.5% of the total infractions detected with RPAS), the incorrect use of seat belts and child restraint systems (15, 9%), and overtaking cyclists without respecting the minimum safety distances (4%).

A suitcase of only five kilos, will hit the driver with the same force that a 150 kilos lion would. A beach umbrella, weighing three kilos, would be propelled and hit with the same force as a 90-kilo wild boar. An umbrella that only weighs 415 grams would weigh five kilos And what many vehicleoccupants have loose in the car, the mobile phone, weighing in at around 150 grams, but if it were propelled forward in a collision the Elephant Effect would turn it into a projectile capable of hitting with a force of 1.5 kilos. Avoiding the Elephant Effect is easier than you might think. Firstly, ensure that groceries, luggage, bags etc are carried securely in the boot. Secondly, for other loose items such

as sunglasses, chargers, mints etc, use the glove box or the side pockets in the doors. Many vehicles have pockets in the seats for rear-seated passengers to use, and so use them. As for your mobile, make sure that is also securely stowed, out of sight and harm´s way if you are not using it for mapping services but if you are then make sure it is in a secure location, using an approved cradle, and where it also doesn’t interfere with your primary field of vision.

To be fair, I was tempted to ‘do a Harry Kane’ and not show up today but then I realised nobody was likely to be putting in a €150m+ bid to remove me from my Tottenham (and by Tottenham, I mean this column) hell. So, here I am - raising a glass to the opening of the 2021/22 English football season having watched the traditional curtain-raiser at Wembley. It doesn’t matter how much managers like Peppy G and Brentan like to pretend that it’s a trophy worth winning, the Community Shield was nothing more than a glorified friendly kickabout with players that will get nowhere near the actual Premier League team in the case of City and a quickly scrabbled together back four for Leicester now that Wes Fofana has joined Jonny Evans, Timothy Castagne, James Justin and everyone else in the treatment room. Understandably, much of the fanfare was to welcome the most expensive English footballer ever to Manchester City. Jack Grealish adopted his England role and sat on the bench for most of the game at the ‘Home of Football’ and got 15 minutes at the end showing off a few nice touches and not a lot else. Leicester were handed the game on a Nathan Ake-shaped platter after the Dutch defender managed to let a pass slip under his foot, get tackled by Iheanacho and then drag the Nigerian to the floor - Iheanacho got up to fire the winning penalty home to save us all from having to watch another spot-kick showdown under the arch. The first silverware of the season went to the Foxes and Guardiola’s attention will now switch to persuading Spurs that they want to give him Kane in exchange for around one-hundred-and-fifty million big ones. City believe they can get a deal done this week - which will be music to the ears of the England captain who has finally rocked up at Tottenham’s training complex

claiming he was not on strike, he just wasn’t at training. Kane will be spending five days in solitary confinement - not a punishment dished out by Daniel Levy, sadly - as he undergoes quarantine. Yet, could Pep’s affections be now divided given that a certain Mr Messi is not going to be playing for Barcelona next season? Sure, PSG are already commissioning some fancy marketing agency to do a “Messi Launch Party” underneath the Eiffel Tower but it is believed that the Argentine’s preferred destination is still the rain of Manchester. Mind you, Roman Abramovich might have something to say about that having called an “emergency meeting” which his folks to pull together an immediate battle plan to take Messi to Stamford Bridge. Defender Aymeric Laporte could not care less if Kane or Messi join Grealish at the club - he wants to go to La Liga meaning both Real Madrid and Barcelona, both massively broke remember, are being linked. Inter Milan have “reluctantly” accepted the fact that Romelu Lukaku has unfinished business at Chelsea and Chelsea have £100m with their name on it. Lukaku is expected to be at the club some time next week. Whilst they are in Italy, Chelsea are hoping to pick up Juve’s Dutch defender Mattijs de Ligt in return for either Jorginho or Timo Werner and another wedge of cash. This all means players lead to leave the Bridge and fast - Kurt Zouma still heads that list, winger Kenedy (yeah, he’s still there), Baba Rahman (yep, him too), Danny Drinkwater (I know, still getting paid to be a footballer), Ross Barkley and Tammy Abraham are all expected to depart at some point. Tottenham have literally set up camp in Serie A and have signed Atalanta’s Cristian Romero, finally £47m is all the best defender in Italy costs nowadays. Spurs would still like Japanese international Tomiyasu for under £20m - Bologna, in case you’d forgotten. They won’t be signing Philippe Coutinho, however - he, like Antonio Griezmann, is being offered to all and sundry but given he is playing in Spain Spurs have politely declined.

They’d much rather Inter’s Lautaro Martinez for £60m - spending the Harry Kane money they really don’t want to cash in on. Martinez is claimed to be up for the move - Ashley Young, Christian Eriksen, Alexis Sanchez and Victor Moses must have had quite the impression on him. There’s lots of noise coming out of Arsenal, as usual. They will need to pay £60m plus to take James Maddison from Leicester and pay him a fair whack to take a step down in level. If he cannot be convinced, then they’d like to take Bernardo Silva off Pep’s hands as he wants to leave the Etihad. However, nobody with half a brain is convinced that the Emirates is what Bernardo was meaning when he said that. The Gunners have also bid a mere £17m for Lazio attacker Joaquin Correra which has been described as “inadequate” - not a word Arsenal are unaccustomed to. Arteta is still sniffing around Sheffield United’s Aaron Ramsdale and Sander Berge and thinks they are a good use of £50m. Also, given that Manchester United have been able to get anything done, Arsenal would like to sign Atletico’s Kieran Trippier for £40m - you have to admire the ambition if nothing else. Despite all this, Lyon’s Houssam Aouar would still join them in a heartbeat - just nobody is picking up the phone. It’s been pretty quiet at Old Trafford in the last week other than Anthony Martial being pretty likely to leave this window - Inter Milan would like him to replace both Lukaku and Martinez which asking a bit much in the cold light of day. The fact it is equally quiet at Anfield will not please King Kloppo anymore than last week - Liverpool are one of several teams being linked to Bournemouth’s Arnaut Danjuma. I mean, he’s alright but doesn’t really fill the big hole in the middle of the park that Gini’s gone and left. Aston Villa love a transfer window and before their former skipper was unveiled at City they’d revealed they had signed both Leon Bailey and Southampton’s Danny Ings in the same day. Dean Smith isn’t planning on stopping there - he still fancies a

bit of JWP’s dead-ball cunning and is one of the remaining people in football that believes there is a topclass striker waiting to happen in Tammy Abraham. Brentford have the reputation of being “clever” in the transfer market so the fact nobody has heard of Yoane Wissa (a winger) and Jens Cajuste (a midfielder) would suggest they are busy being clever again. Everton are not thought to be clever, which is why they are being linked to Solomon Rondon who, I believe, was least seen playing in China. Leeds have asked both Noa Lang, a Dutch U21 international, and Huddersfield midfielder Lewis O’Brien if they like running and have ever heard of murderball - both gave the right kind of answer so at least one of them will be moving to Elland Road. Southampton are looking to fill their sudden Ings-shaped hole with either Blackburn’s Adam Armstrong or Tammy Abraham. They’ll need someone or the dreaded R word will start to be whispered down at St Mary’s. West Ham reckon they’ve got about a 10% chance of getting Jesse Lingard to the club this season so are switching their attention to various European-based central defenders. Nikola Malenkovic of Fiorentina, Duje Caleta-Car of Marseille and Nayef Aguerd are being linked to the Athletics Stadium. Crystal Palace’s Vieira-led spending spree looks set to continue - they’ve probably signed loads more since last week and I’ve forgotten to tell you. This week, they are keen to get Armstrong ahead of Southampton and many others (I just don’t know who they are). Norwich want USA international Josh Sargent for £10m, Brighton want Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah for £20m and Newcastle are the latest side to show an interest in random Liverpool cult hero Nat Phillips. Meanwhile, Burnley would like to be rejected by Leipzig’s Ademola Lookman who surely believes he can do better than that. So, rather than look for another winger Sean Dyche is up for signing Maxwel Cornet instead - a defender, in case you are bothered.
