Fundraiser for Mum who died after Torrevieja hospital sent her home

the local community gathered at the emerald isle on sunday (22nd august) to raise money following the tragic death of local lady Rachael Firth, aged 33. artists including stevie spit, alex tipping, Chloe Jones, nikki g, Roberto Knight, Rain o’Connor, Christopher halford, diane diaz and Lorna Michelle all gave their time for free to ensure

every penny would go to help Rachael’s Mum Jane and thirteen-year-old son Reece. at time of going to press the event had raised more than 2,800€ which will go towards the unexpected funeral costs. Rachael was sent home from torrevieja hospital on 14th august after

a 14 hour wait in a&e with severely swollen legs following days of pain. she later died at her home, in Los altos, in agony from what was believed to have been an embolism by the paramedics that tried in vain to revive her. Rachael was told her long hospital wait was due to a high level of emergency admissions which took

preference. however, even when she was finally seen by a doctor Rachael felt she had not been taken seriously, despite being told to go to emergencies by her gP if her condition got worse. in text messages to her Mum, Rachael explained how the doctor became dismissive once she discovered Rachael’s medical notes detailed treatments for mental health issues. according to the messages, Rachael thought the female doctor was ‘really nasty’ to her and told two nurses to just ‘get her a taxi and get her home’. Rachael’s treatment by the doctor was so rude and uncaring that Rachael told her Mum that the doctor ‘hates me’. after X-rays were taken, Rachael finally got home at 3am, after 14 hours, and was obviously still unwell and in agony the next morning. Jane rushed to the local chemist for advice and medication but when she got back Rachael was unconscious on the floor. Jane, who has nursing experience,

See page 12

performed CPR, but was not able to revive her daughter nor were paramedics. Jane is now seeking legal advice over Rachael’s ‘disgusting’ lack of treatment and to question if her death could have been avoided if she had received the appropriate medical attention.

EU leaders praise Spain’s Afghan evacuation operation spain has become a global reference point for the management of the ongoing crisis in afghanistan, a country that has been left in chaos since the withdrawal of united states’ troops, the advance of the taliban and the collapse of the government. in response to the crisis, and in less than 24 hours, the spanish authorities set up a european reception centre for afghans fleeing the country at the torrejón de ardoz air base in Madrid. on sunday (22nd august), 177 people arrived from Kabul at the base on two of the a400 aircraft the spanish government is using for the operation. of these, 110 were aid workers and the rest afghans that had worked for the us. on saturday, another spanish transport evacuated 110 people, which included 64 afghans who had worked with Washington. until now, five flights sent by spain to afghanistan have managed to rescue 445 afghans and five spaniards. since thursday, the base at torrejón has also received three flights

from the european union’s external action service carrying 110 people. according to spanish defense Minister Margarita Robles, the camp has become “the envy” of spain’s nato allies. the minister proposed that those in Kabul who do not have a travel document or are trying to reach the airport “shout ‘spain,’ or carry the [spanish] flag or something red to be able to enter.” at the weekend, spanish Prime Minister Pedro sánchez and us President Joe Biden agreed that spain would house

afghans who had worked with Washington at the spanishamerican bases of Rota in Cádiz and Morón de la Frontera in seville, until they can be transferred to other countries. on saturday, the presidents of the european Commission and the european Council, ursula von der Leyen and Charles Michel, also visited the air base at torrejón de ardoz. there they expressed their gratitude to Prime Minister sánchez for the operation to take in the afghan refugees who have worked for the european institutions.

Spanish man is oldest in the world spain is now home to the world’s oldest man – saturnino de la Fuente garcía, who is 112-anda-half, now holds the title after emilio Flores from Puerto Rico passed away just over a week ago. according to his national id Card saturnino, from León, was born on February 12, 1909, his son-in-law Bernardo Marcos explains he was actually born on February 8, 1909. this is because it was habitual in the early years of the last century to wait about four days before registering a birth – at a time when infant mortality was very high all over the world, it was often considered that there was no point in going through the paperwork until you were fairly confident the newborn was going to survive. Briefly, spain was once home to the oldest man and the oldest woman in europe – ana María Vela Rubio, from Barcelona, turned 116 in october 2017, but passed away in december that year; from 11thh august, 2017, Francisco núñez olivera, from extremadura, became the oldest man on earth, turning 113 on 13th december that year, but passed away on 29th January, 2018. it is much harder to live long enough to be the planet’s oldest woman – for men, this title can reach them within months of their 112th birthdays, but women normally have to live to

be over 117. at present, the longest-living woman on earth is Kane tanaka, from Japan, who will be exactly 118 and nine months if she survives until 2nd september, having been born the day after new Year in 1903. nobody born in the 19th century remains alive today – the last living person with a date of birth prior to the 20th century was italy’s emma Morano, who came into the world on 29th november, 1899 and died on 15th april, 2017, aged 117 years and 137 days.

Life story saturnino, was born during the reign of King alfonso Xiii, lived through the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera (from 1923 to 1930), remembers life during the second Republic and the Civil War. saturnino had eight children, although three of them have died and has welcome 14 grandchildren and 22 greatgrandchildren into the world. his long life was something saturnino could never have guessed he would get to see – especially as he seriously thought he was going to die when he was 28. he found himself trapped under the rubble left by an air crash, when

a Cóndor Legion plane went down in 1937, falling onto the C/ La Rúa in León city. the Covid crisis is the second pandemic saturnino has lived through – he survived the socalled spanish ‘Flu in 1918 – although this time around, he was the first man in the whole of his province to be vaccinated, given that the Covid jabs have been administered in descending order of age. a shoe-maker by trade, saturnino started work in a footwear factory aged 13 and remained there for over 30 years, until it closed down; at this point, he decided to return to live in the neighbourhood he was born in, the Puente Castro area of León city. it was here that he founded the local football team, Cd Puente Castro – which is still active, and saturnino is an honorary member.

Local Police dismantles illegal party Policia Local officers dismantled an illegal party in dehesa de Campoamor urbanisation in orihuela Costa where 29 people had gathered at 4am to drink and dance. Police also recovered narcotic substances. three patrols moved to a place called “Farándula”, which is currently unused, where loud music could be heard from outside. given the obvious suspicion that a party was taking place inside, an inspection was carried out and it was found that there were lots of people consuming alcoholic beverages

and narcotic substances. the attendees were also not complying with the minimum safety distance restrictions or wearing a protective mask against CoVid. given the

obvious breaches of the health measures, the 29 people attending were identified and fines were drawn up for group excess and others for possession of narcotics. Likewise, the officers arrested two people aged 46 and 49, one of them the promoter of the party and another for an alleged crime against public health, finding him with 11 cocaine bags, various types of pills and money. in addition, inside the premises, 18 cocaine wraps were found, almost 30 pills and hashish were found.

if you’ve had your home on the market for quite some time, and you’re still waiting for that elusive offer, you need to seriously think objectively about why you believe it still hasn’t sold. some people price their homes based on pure emotion, and find it hard to break free from the potential monetary loss. Comparing what they paid for the property originally, together with the tidy sum invested in renovating can make their price inflated, compared to the current market value. as a seller, you need to focus on the importance of the here and now and not on past markets. Prices can and do vary from year to year. sometimes you need to bite the bullet, cut your losses, and weigh up the reasons why your property is on the market in the first place. if you really need or want to move, you must price your home according-ly. Buyers aren’t naïve! they will know exactly what they can get for their money, and just because you may have the most beautiful home on the street, doesn’t mean you

can ask above thecurrent market value. it is the market that will decide your property’s value. You’ve probably experienced quite a few potential buyers being brought to your home, but ask yourself how many offers have you even had? if your answer is none, then now would be the time to reduce your asking price. Whether you’re selling during a pandemic or not, if you’re not up to pricing your property correctly then maybe it shouldn’t be on the market. if you make the mistake of pricing the property based on what you want to purchase next, you need to remember in any property market there are losses, but there can be gains too! if you feel now is the time to lower your asking price, think about the offer you’ll be putting in on your next purchase. sometimes you won’t make as big a loss as you think, because you’ll gain it right back on your next home purchase! Put yourself in a buyer’s shoes… Would you be willing to pay too much?

Falling Covid cases Seaweed collection ease red list fears starts on Orihuela Costa spain’s 14-day case rate has fallen in recent weeks signalling a boost for anxious British holidaymakers fearful the country could turn red at the next travel update. the country’s average Covid rate currently stands at 604 infections per 100,000 people – down from 721 the previous week and 784 the week prior, according to the european Centre for disease Prevention and Control. holidaymakers expressed concern that the country could switch from amber to red at the next travel review this week, after data showed a high proportion of travellers returning from the country had tested positive for Covid. More than one in 35 travellers arriving in Britain from spain in the week to 4th august were found to have the virus, according to nhs test and trace figures published recently. MPs will keep a keen eye on updated figures as they weigh up changes to the traffic light system for international travel. the next travel review is due this week, possibly on 25th august, with any new restrictions likely to come in from around 29th august. the government has insisted it will not add any additional

categories to the traffic light system, with Prime Minister Boris Johnson saying earlier this month the travel scheme must be “user-friendly”. But the comments sparked concern that any significant increase in Covid cases may see popular holiday destinations such as spain bypass the previous “amber plus list” and be placed directly on the red list. uK national newspapers have reported that holidaymakers heading to spain are making contingency plans to get back to the uK in case the Mediterranean country turns red later this month. anybody returning to the uK from countries on the red list must quarantine at a government-selected hotel for 10 days at a cost of £2,250 per adult, regardless of their vaccine status. despite a recent fall in cases, spain’s infection rate is still the second-highest in europe behind Cyprus, whose 14-day case rate stands at 931 per 100,000. Both countries are on the amber list for travel, meaning double-jabbed Britons no longer need to quarantine upon return, though they still have to take a series of costly Covid tests. in comparison, the uK’s

infection rate is 295 – almost 50 per cent lower than spain’s. Ministers have pointed the finger at a surge in cases of the Beta variant across europe for a spate of flip-flop travel decisions over the past few weeks. scientists are concerned that the Beta variant, first identified in south africa, could prove more resilient to available vaccines. spain has so far recorded 1,019 cases of the Beta variant, according to the gisaid variant tracker – fewer than the uK’s 1,059 confirmed cases. holidaymakers are hoping that the low figure will mean spain avoids being placed on the red list, with around a million Britons currently thought to be on holiday in the country. spain is the uK’s most popular foreign holiday destination, attracting around 6.3 million British tourists from July to september 2019. But businesses in the travel industry have warned that recent changes to the traffic light system have dented consumer confidence. travel company tui recently cancelled a series of flights and holidays to a host of countries including spain due to the “ongoing uncertainty around travel”.

gestión ambiental urbana, s.L.u. has been awarded the contract for Posidonia seaweed removal from the beaches of orihuela, the contract also covers transportation to a treatment plant. the company has already begun to provide its services under the terms of the 12 month contract amounting to a maximum amount of 67,100.00 euros with the possibility of an increase of 20 percent. the criteria used by the oriolano City Council was focussed on best price. the company offered the highest percentage of discount on the maximum prices of working hours, obtaining the highest score. the department of Road Cleaning and Rsu carries out these works to remove the remains of Posidonia oceanica (algae) with the aim of safeguarding the regression of the beaches and reducing the loss of sand. the institute of Coastal ecology, has given guidance on the sustainable management of Posidonia burrows. this

includes clearing in the summer and leaving the banquettes on the shore through the winter months to ensure sustainable management of the Posidonia and environmental care of the beaches. Posidonia or alga is a plant, it is not rubbish nor waste. stacking algae for drying is an activity authorised and recommended by the general directorate of Coasts to avoid excessive loss of sand. it must be made clear that the oceanic posidonia meadows, an endemic species of the shallow

waters of the Mediterranean sea, is synonymous with good water quality, well oxygenated and free from contamination. the seaweed on the shore is dried throughout the winter by an environmental treatment to prevent erosion of the beach and for this reason it is not collected. this process is carried out following the recommendations of the adeaC, of all the beach certification companies and of the european union environment.

Spain receives €9 billion recovery fund instalment the european Commission has announced that it has already sent €9 billion of pre-financing to spain – that’s 13 percent of the €69.5 billion of transfers that the government’s “Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF)” is due to receive in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. the money must be spent on investments and reforms that underpin the green and digital transitions and that also promote social cohesion. among these initiatives, Brussels cited in its press release support for renewable energies, the refurbishment of buildings to make them more energy efficient, the improvement of digital skills among citizens and the reduction of youth unemployment via professional training programs. the president of the european Commission, ursula von der Leyen, said in the statement: “i am convinced that spain’s ambitious plan will provide a crucial push for the european green deal to become a reality, it will further digitalize the economy and it will make spain more resilient than ever.” Meanwhile, via twitter, spanish Prime Minister Pedro sánchez said: “We continue to move toward a country that is

more green, digital, feminist and cohesive, putting into operation the major transformations that our economy needs.” the funds were released in the middle of July, when the european union’s finance ministers gave the definitive green light to the recovery plan under which spain is hoping to access up to €140 billion, a total that includes loans that spain is

yet to request – it has until 2026 to do so. the following transfers, however, will not be automatic. spain will have to demonstrate to the eC and its partners every six months that it has carried out the reforms and investments that it has committed to if it wants to access the funds. given the urgent task of distributing these funds in order to boost recovery, the spanish government has taken steps to ensure that the money flows rapidly. the country’s regions have already been assigned

more than €7.25 billion, which, according to the economy Ministry, will be used primarily to support the implementation of waste-management regulations, work on power lines to avoid damage to wildlife, the refurbishment of buildings, improvements to watertreatment services, modernizing vocational training, reducing the digital divide, boosting equality and social inclusion policies, and improving health technologies. the government is planning for the funds to be used, among other initiatives, to digitalise more than a million small- and medium-sized businesses, supporting more than 3,000 companies as they become more international, training more than 2.6 million people in digital skills, installing more than 240,000 interactive digital classrooms, refurbishing more than a million homes, reaching a fleet of at least 250,000 electric vehicles in 2023 with more than 100,000 charging points, modernising the justice system, rolling out high-speed internet to 100% of the population, and building more than 335 kilometres of rail track on the atlantic and Mediterranean coasts.

Big Reds have great offers in its charity shop where you can buy

designer clothes and popular labels from just €2, as well as checking out the wedding range. Posh affaire would like to thank Big Reds animal association for kindly giving up part of their shop in almoradi for this joint fundraiser. this month saw the celebration of national Cat day and a great way to support Big Reds rescue cats and kittens would be to buy food, a new toy, or bedding which is always needed. any donation towards their trap neuter Return programs in the area would also be gratefully received via PaYPaL, email: bigredsassociation@gmail.com or check out the Facebook page.

Why Chorus financial are different By Tracy Storer Senior Partner Chorus Financial Whether you are reading the local newspapers, browsing social media or google, or tuning into the local radio stations, there are certainly no shortage of Financial advisers, but how do you know which one to choose? as many of you will likely know, Chorus are certainly not spain’s longest established firm, in fact, far from it. Chorus was set-up very deliberately as an alternative to those firms. We entered an industry that we felt had little care for client outcomes and was purely focussed on how much in fees, hidden or otherwise, could be extracted from Brits living in spain. From our point of view, the very foundations of good quality advice – transparency and suitability – were about the last thing many of the established firms in spain cared

about. Chorus began life with a clear goal; to offer the best service, the highest quality financial solutions, and all of that had to be coupled with transparent, fair fees, that were fully justifiable. to do this, however, we really had to explain to the public how the industry works. Regulation isn’t all that strict in spain, and that can mean people are tied into products with high, often hidden fees, and in many cases, inappropriate or lowqualityunderlying investments. We felt our first job was to properly explain how fees and commissions work, how common products like siPPs, QRoPs, spanish Compliant Bonds can be of benefit in some cases, and not in others. We have now been doing this for

many years, we’ve won major international awards for our efforts, and i believe that along the way we have educated many 100,000s of Brits in spain. so why are Chorus different? Well, myself and theChorus team have been lucky in that we have been able to keep full control of Chorus and to always work to those initial goals we set. although we operate under a major european financial services network, aisa international, aisa also share our aims and goals and have always fully supported, and indeed encouraged, our transparent, client-focussed approach. unlike many in the industry, our business model is focussed on developing long term relationships with our clients, rather than obtaining high

up-front commissions or fees. over the years this has allowed us to grow a large, happy, and loyal client base, giving us as a company incredible longterm security whilst allowing us to fulfil our client’s goals and desired outcomes. Whilst we might not be the largest, or indeed the longest established firm out there, we would like to think that our approach makes usthe best, and hopefully ourever-growing list of happy clients would agree! if you would like to discuss your investment or pension needs here in spain, please contact Chorus Financial for a free, no obligation consultation by emailing info@chorusfinancial. es, calling +34 965 641 163 or visit www.chorusfinancial.es for more information.

Investment contracts are intended as medium to long term investments, and all investments have some level of risk. GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP a week of caution meant sterling got lost in the middle. the safe-haven swiss franc, Japanese yen and the us dollarpushed ahead while the “commodity” dollars fell back. safe haven currencies proved popular amid enduring Covid-19 fears, turmoil in afghanistan and a widespread fall in commodity prices. on average the pound was unchanged against the major currencies. at the extremes it lost two and a half swiss cents (2%) and added two and three quarter australian cents (1.5%). Politically it was a quiet week and the Bank of england was seasonally silent. uK economic data releases were a very mixed bag. two house price indices from Rightmove (5.6% higher on the year) and dCLg (up by an annual 13.2%) differed widely only because they covered different periods. Rightmove was august – august and dCLg June – June. But while Rightmove’s house price index fell 0.3% in august, it does expect an autumn bounce in prices soon, despite the softening right now. uK labour market statistics (gBP) came in very close to forecast. unemployment was a touch lower at 4.7% and jobseeker claims were 7,800 fewer. average earnings were strong, up by 8.8% on the year including bonuses and 7.4% higher without. the ons pointed out that the earnings figures are distorted by temporary factors. Lower than expected inflation and an unexpected fall in retail sales did no real damage. EURO investor sentiment fades could be the headline for the euro this week. indeed european statisticians could be excused for

taking the annual august shutdown at least as seriously as the politicians and captains of industry. none of them had much to say for themselves and the only real takeaway was that corporate confidence on the continent has come off the boil. there was nothing to enthuse potential buyers of the euro and the currency lost ground during the early part of the week before stabilising on thursday afternoon. its performance very similar to that of sterling, with the loss of almost one us cent and an average decline of 0.2%. steady inflation in europe came at the same time inflation stabilised in the us, and none of the numbers came as a surprise, while also overshadowed by the us confidence reading. in France, the hiCP standardised consumer price index came in at 1.5%, a touch below forecast and down from the previous month’s 1.9%. spain’s 2.9% was exactly as analysts had predicted. the eurozone’s €18.1 billion trade surplus for June was in the middle of its range over the last five years. the only hard pan-euroland economic data were for industrial production. it fell 0.3% in June, leaving it 9.7% higher on the year. the equivalent readings for germany alone – a major contributor to the whole – were -1.3% and +5.1%. sentix and ZeW both published the results of their surveys of institutional investor sentiment. sentix found “surprisingly little cheering, surprisingly few fears” as its confidence index slipped almost eight points to 22.2. ZeW’s comment was that “expectations have declined for the third time in a row. this points to increasing risks for the german economy.” Confidence in the eurozone as a whole was also lower, down from 61.2 to 42.7.

Hundreds of kilos of dead fish wash up on Mar Menor small dead fish began to appear on the beaches of the southern part of the Mar Menor, last week. Residents were quick to point to what happened in october 2019, when thousands of dead fish washed up on the shores, having been asphyxiated due to a lack of oxygen. this time, however, the episode was on a smaller scale, and so far around 250 kilos of young fish and some crustaceans have been recovered – in 2019, three tons of dead animals washed up. Fish suffocating due to a lack of oxygen has come to symbolise the environmental collapse of the Mar Menor, which is the largest saltwater lagoon in europe. after the episode in 2019, experts put the disaster down to the management of the land surrounding the lagoon, which covers 17,000 hectares. More specifically, they blame intensive farming for contaminating the soil and the groundwater with nitrates from fertilisers, which end up in the Mar Menor, causing eutrophication. this happens when there is an excessive amount of nutrients in the water, provoking the growth of phytoplankton which reduces the amount of oxygen. Murcia’s regional government has stated that the data collected this time around by

scientists at the Cartagena Polytechnic university rules out that this was due to a lack of oxygen, nor have any toxic substances been detected. there has, however, been a rise in the temperature of the water in the area, which has gone from 28.5ºC to 31ºC in just two days. according to a spokesperson from the university, this could be the cause of the phenomenon. environmental organisations in the area, however, have vehemently rejected this official explanation. they suggest instead that the ecosystem has deteriorated and that a lack of oxygen is the most plausible explanation. Ángel Pérez Ruzafa, an ecology professor at the university of Murcia, believes that the high temperatures have been combined with the arrival of superficial and subterranean

waters that are “heavily loaded with nutrients.” his team, which works with the Murcia regional government, has only located low oxygen levels in a couple of places in the area. “there has not been general anoxia, but there is enough for sensitive organisms to notice it,” he explains. the episode has, as such, affected creatures such as shrimp, among others, but not eel or sea bream. in his opinion, a repeat episode cannot be ruled out. Juan Manuel Ruiz, a research professor at the CsiC-spanish oceanographic institute, argues that “ruling out anoxia without having adequate monitoring systems in place for this variable lacks scientific rigor.” he points out that a shortage of oxygen in just one part of the lagoon is enough for organisms in that area to die and later wash up on the beaches.

Spanish nationals repatriated from Afghanistan the operation to repatriate spanish nationals from afghanistan got underway, with the first flight from Kabul airport taking off last week. the a400M military plane sent by spain was carrying between 50 and 100 people. the aim is to evacuate spanish residents, the country’s diplomatic contingent, police officers and other security staff and the afghan personnel who have worked for the armed forces in recent years. spain sent a first a400M aircraft for this mission from Zaragoza to dubai and a second identical plane the morning after. Both planes will travel to afghanistan “as many times as is necessary,” according to sources from the spanish Foreign

Ministry, in order to repatriate all of the spaniards and afghans who are on a list put together by the ministry itself. the operation has been put into place after the country was rapidly taken over by the taliban since the withdrawal of united states troops. spanish Prime Minister Pedro sánchez announced via twitter that a a400M medical plane would be joining the mission. the aircraft left the Madrid base in torrejón de ardoz headed first for dubai. Meanwhile, high Representative of the european union for Foreign affairs and security Policy Josep Borrell expressed his gratitude for the offer that spain has made in

Brussels to coordinate the arrival in the eu of the afghans who worked for the bloc’s institutions over recent years, as well as their families. Brussels has calculated that they will number between 380 and 400 people, and will be flown to spain where they will be given international protection visas. From there, it will be decided in which eu states they will be given refugee status. the initiative will also count on the support of italy, according to Borrell, which has offered the aircraft needed for the flights, as well as France, which will offer security protection on the ground. Borrell also thanked these two countries for their assistance.

Most common summer disease and how to avoid them attention to the following points:

the most frequent pathologies with which patients go to the emergency room during the holiday season are usually acute-onset external conditions and gastrointestinal problems, according to dr. Juan Costell, head of the emergency department of the Quirónsalud torrevieja hospital. one of the main reasons for a hospital visit is otitis, a swelling of the ear due to an infection. dr. Costell explains: “otalgia with a history of recent bathing is usually the reason that requires a more indepth care consultation. they are usually secondary external otitis due to immersion in swimming pools or in the sea, as is usual at this time of year.” this type of ear infection, caused by the action of moisture, produces an alteration in the epithelium of the external auditory canal, which in turn causes the germs that are usually in the duct to penetrate, causing the infection. as for its symptoms, the doctor says that “it manifests as a strong pain in the area and, if the disease progresses, suppuration and narrowness of the ear canal occurs along with a temporary hearing loss, as the inflammation does not let the air through”. dr. Costell recommends that, after three or four days, following

• Dermatological infections - the most frequent are fungal infections and especially so-called athlete’s foot, which occurs after stepping on wet ground previously infected by other people. “to prevent it,” says dr. Lasaga, “it is important to use flipflops both in swimming pools and showers and dry feet really well. in case of infection, it will be necessary to use a topical antifungal treatment.”

a visit to the emergency room and treatment with topical antibiotic therapy, the patient should visit an otolaryngologist – ear, nose and throat specialist - since this type of infection can cause numerous problems. in relation to gastrointestinal problems, dr. Costell points out that, although the care demand is lower than in cases of otitis, the severity of the condition may even require the patient’s admission to hospital. “acute gastroenteritis is usually accompanied by vomiting, an increased number of bowel movements, diarrhoea, high fever and oral intolerance. Most of these problems in summer are due to food poisoning, the main danger being severe dehydration, especially

in children and the elderly,” he said. to prevent gastrointestinal problems in summer, hand hygiene is essential before preparing food and consuming, preferably, use freshly prepared or refrigerated food, since the heat can alter its state. dr. José Luis Lasaga, head of emergencies at Quirónsalud alicante, said: “although these pathologies are present all year round, it is in summer and during the holidays when they manifest themselves in a more recurrent way”. to know what they are and how we can avoid the most common summer diseases, dr. Lasaga indicates to pay

• Diseases related to heat and prolonged exposure to high temperatures without adequate ventilation or hydration is another common issue in the summer. “its symptoms can range from muscle cramps, dizziness, loss of consciousness, to hyperthermia, hypotension, dehydration and death,” explains the specialist from Quirónsalud torrevieja. the doctor advises avoiding peak hours of sun, proper hydration and keeping the body cool. • Sexually transmitted diseases – due to the possible increase in isolated sexual contact without the use of adequate protective measures. to avoid them, dr. Lasaga advises the use of condoms to minimise the risk of contracting these diseases. “if this happens, go to your doctor to perform the

appropriate complementary tests and establish the appropriate treatment,” says the specialist. • Insect bites and jellyfish stings - in most cases they cause mild symptoms that are usually controlled with physical and antiinflammatory measures, “although you must not forget to consult with your doctor or go to the emergency services if you have symptoms such as dizziness, loss of consciousness, uncontrolled fever, dyspnoea or chest pain,” says Lasaga. Finally, to spend a good summer without any health scares the specialists of Quirónsalud torrevieja and alicante recommend drinking plenty of fluids, avoiding the hours of increased sun exposure, use of adequate sunscreens, eat a balanced diet, wash hands frequently, and if you travel do not forget any medication you need and if in doubt consult with your usual doctors or the emergency services.

David Duchovny hasn’t ruled out an X-Files return David Duchovny has opened up about a possible X-Files return. The actor, who played FBI agent Fox Mulder on the long-running show for nine seasons, said that while his co-star Gillian Anderson (who played Dana Scully) may have ruled out a return, he has not. He also reflected on playing the character of Mulder over 25 years, a role that spanned the entire show, two feature films and a two-season reboot, which happened five years ago. When asked if he ever tired of playing Mulder, Duchovny said: “Oh, no... What was interesting when we went back to do like the reboot seasons, was how daunting it was at first. How do I do this guy again? Who is this guy? He was a bit lost to me at first. But then I thought, well, now he’s older. He’s different. And

so am I. So it’s not like trying to do the same thing.” The pair were snapped along with Anderson’s dog, Stella. “Stella made a new friend today. @davidduchovny,” wrote The Crown star in an Instagram post that has since received almost 400,000 likes. Anderson and Duchovny starred together on the popular sci-fi series from 1993 to 2002, after which they reunited for two followup seasons in 2016 and 2018. Anderson – who also stars in Netflix’s Sex Education – previously won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her performance as Agent Scully in the original series. Duchovny received four nominations for his role in The X-Files but only took home the award once in 1997.

The 700 year role that Orihuela played in the Vega Baja By David Hudson – Part 2 What Spain went through The one thing you must remember when reading about Spain’s history is that after the Christian Spain under the Romans and Visigoths it took 7 hundred years to return to Christianity. Something that Europe has never experienced and unlike England the Spanish are not ashamed of what Christian laws has donefor the ordinary people and remain the fulcrum of future integration. The reconquest has left hundreds of castles and forts as well as warning towers. Like the beacons in England they were at a distance that the next tower could see the semaphore. The entrance to the towers were halfway up so that the occupants could destroy the ladder which meant that when being attacked only one person at a time could try to enter the tower. This struggle is why religious and Moors and Christian fiestas have such an important place in the community. The oldest Annual Moors and Christians fiesta is in Orihuela that was held in 1594 to celebrate Christianity which was a few years after being freed from the Muslims. The Vega Baja is the triangle from San Pedro to Guardamar up to Hondon de las Frailes with the Sierras of Orihuela, Callosa and Hurchillo. There are 27 towns in the Vega Baja each one has their own history and culture. Some of its physical history was destroyed in the earthquakes of 1829 and 1919 when Almoradi, San Miguel, Montesinos, Granja de Rocamora, Guardamar, Benejuzar, Benejofar, Bigastro, Daya Nueva, Dolores, Jacarilla, Rojales were hit badly and it totally destroyed all the houses of Torrevieja. This was a national disaster and Funds were raised all over Spain. There were 385 deaths with 375 injured. On March 21st every year there is tribute to remember the disaster. The Castles and Palaces in the Vega Baja There are 27 Castles and Forts in the Alicante Province five of which are in the Vega Baja with a palace with a splendid garden plus a fortified Manor House in Cox that more than once gave shelter to prominent persons. The origins of COX dates from Roman times the name COX or Coxis means bottom of the mountain. It has a 12th century Fortified Manor House that has two floors with spiral stairs. It has been recently restored by the Valencian Government with a new set of steps to the castle replacing the winding path. A bit of a climb but worth the spectacular views. The Marques of Jacarilla built an impressive palace and gardens with a Guardia Civil house. Worthwhile a visit as it is only 3kms from Bigastro. Callosa has a 10th Century Castle and is the oldest in the Province. It sits 200m high on a craggy rocky summit

of Callosa mountain and was restored in 1989. In Guardamar you can see the remains of the fortress. The large 12th Century Gothic wall protects the castle. The exterior of the castle was reformed in the 16th century but the rest was in Medieval style. It remained in good condition until the 1829 earthquake. The original inhabitants were Catalans and the name reflex that as a Navy base it was to protect the River Segura from a sea attack. It has been recently restored and offers guided tours. The Santa Pola Castle played an important part in the defence of the town against pirates. It was built in 1558 by the Duke of Maqueda to protect the fishermen and families from the pirates. The fort had advanced canons of its time. It was saved from demolition in the 19th century because the local council gained permission to build a church and customs house. The Castle of Montemar in Algofa was built in the 19th century by the Conde of Casa Rojas and sits high above the Town. It is more decorative than protection. The Orihuela Castle was the best and strongest in Spain. It sits on the top of the Saint Michaels Mount 2,000 feet above sea level. It was originally constructed by Romans to protect the Vega Baja from the Cartegenians. The strong castle was to house the Visigothic King Teodomiro troops and protect the capital of Murcia and Alicante from the Muslims. The castle was part of the city and the wall that I mentioned before was the first line of defence. When the Moors arrived at the battlements they were manned by the troops and women dressed as soldiers. It was so convincing that it led to the Moors negotiating a pact that allowed King to remain King of the Christians until he died at the age of 70. The area covered was Alicante, Murcia up to Hellin and Albacete. There were three entrances to the large fortified wall and when the Moors took charge at the death of Teodomiro they developed the city so that the irregular layout pointed to Meca. It became an important Capital under the Moors. The Zoco Market dates from the 9th century and was to sell the products of the Vega Baja. That included Apples, Pears, Pomegranates and Quinces the Blessing of the Gods. TheMoors also constructed integration system using the river Segura. They also constructed 200 squaremetres of baths that included private and public baths and had hot, normal and cold baths. The town also included gardens and farms. Under the Moors Orihuela maintained Christianity, Jewish and Islam but the influx of Syrians from Valencia and the restriction to defendants of the Visigoths and Jews made it unbearable. Because of the excellent climate and fertile soil the Moors said that “Life is

The palace of the Marqueses De Fontalba De Jacarilla

always easy in the Vega Baja” Orihuela and the Vega Baja. From early times the Vega Baja has been important due to the rivers Segura and Vinalope that provides water for farming, hunting and fishing. Merchants came from France, Greece and North Africa. The Vega Baja is unique in the Costa Blanca for the reason that the people think of themselves as from Vega Baja and Alicante then Murcia but not Valencia. This is because Orihuela was the Capital of Alicante & Murcia under the Visigoths, the Moors and the Aragon kingdoms. It became the most important city in the south east of the Peninsular. Orihuela dates from the Bronze age 2,500 BC with 1000 people living there trading Olives, Cereals, sheep, Cows, Pigs and Goats throughout the Mediterranean. There were metal mines at Santomera. The area has been occupied by the Phoneticians, Cartegenians, Romans, Visigoths, Muslims and Christians. You can easily imagine Hannibal with his elephants passing San Miguel from Cartagena on to Oriluela and to Rome. Look out for the large red signs “Camino del Cid” that is the roads “El Cid” used to reconquer Spain. Locally you take take the Camino del Cid from Callosa to Redovan then on the old road to Orihuela picking up the other side by the Ociopia and continue to Desamparados passing my 9th Century lane on to Beniel and Murcia. In the 16th century the Bishop Loaces created the Dominican Friars in Hondon de la Frailes (Friars) and between them they formed the Orihuela University that was the most prestigious in Spain covering the Arts, Law, Medicine, Theological and Canon Law. Following an epidemic in the 18th century that reduce the life span to 20 years due to the swamp lands. Cardenal Belluga

commenced clearing the swamps using convict labour who were pardoned if they settled in the area. The first areas were Dolores, San Fulgencio and San Felipe de Neri. This cleaning produced a rich fertile land that created the Garden of Spain and led to the Lemon and Orange groves that are there now. The Catholic Royals arranged marriages with Germany, Portugal and England to get a strong hold on Europe. Victoria did the same many centuries later but it back fired. When Isabel of Castilla married Fernando of Aragon, Orihuela lost some of its status. But in the 18th century when Orihuela supported the loosing side in the war of succession it lost its position as the capital and the town and castle was ransacked and privileges were taken away. Felipe V handed the Alicante area over to the Valencian Royal family. Today the proud Vega Baja people still do not accept being run by Valencia. They accept being part of Alicante and affinity to Murcia but not being part of the Valencia kingdom. This means that the local signs in the Valencian language stop at the Vega Baja border. Orihuela never gained its prominence again. By the end of the 18th Century the Catalan, Valencian and Malloca languages had died due to the need of communication throughout Spain. The impact that Orihuela had then faded, while Elche and Alicante took over the importance in this region. Before I finish about the history it is worth mentioning that in the Spanish Civil war San Isidro had the biggest Concentration Camp in Spain where the prisoners had to feed themselves with collecting berries and edible things from the orchard that they were camped in. Once a year there is an memorial event in San Isidro. Sometimes this is refereed to as being in Albatera but San Isidro was part of Albatera in the war only

getting independence afterwards when they set up a agriculture research establishment. Now one of the most important in Spain. When the war ended 80% of the population could not read or write but in ten years under Franco 90% of them were educated in reading and writing. This was the start of democracy. A Gota Fria in 1976 caused extensive damage in and around Orihuela. In 1987 another Gota Fria destroyed the Vega Baja infrastructure and many people died. The roads you have now dates from then. I remember in the 80s that you had to go through every coastal town. No Tunnel at El Atet or bypasses at La Marina and Torrevieja. There was no AP7 or A7 Motorways. The nearest Carrefour was in Alicante as Elche Carrefour took much longer to get to because of the narrow twisting roads. The Vega Baja countryside gives a colourful fauna with numerous species of birds, kestrels and owls that swoop around my house at night with their loud screeches. I have Robins, Blackbirds, Coal tits, Green singers, Martins, Finches, Wag tails and there are Flamingos and sea birds closer to the coast. There are Natural Parks and Salt Lakes in Torrevieja and La Mata, Mountain walks in Benejuzar, Redovan & Albatera. Palm parks in Orihuela and San Isidro. The culture of Vega Baja covers many products and food with influences from all the invading cultures. Towns can be known for their origins by their name. I had already mention Cox as a Roman name. The name Catral dates from the Iberian period. Any town with a saint in Spanish dates from the 1500. Towns that have “Al” or “Ben” were Muslim settlements and have strong influences of Arab culture.

Calorie conscious cocktails Unfortunately, the calories in booze count. According to Alcohol Aware the humble pint contains as many of them as a large slice of pepperoni pizza. But that doesn’t mean you have to quit booze completely if you want to lose weight. You just need to learn the difference between low-calorie alcohols and the stuff that goes straight to your beer belly. It’s summer after all. The terraces are open, the sun’s shining and the ‘fancy a drink?’ texts are flowing in with alarming regularity. If you want to move forward in a healthconscious way, then you need a plan; an approach that gives you full control over what you’re drinking, without robbing you of any of the fun or spontaneity that the silly season calls for. The key is to be careful about what you’re drinking. Cocktails often have the highest level of calories because of the sugary goodness that make them taste so delicious – a Manhattan has around 160 calories per drink and a Cosmopolitan around 200 calories per drink. Your favourite beer isn’t far behind either, with an average of 149 calories per pint. Don’t forget also that when we drink our blood sugar levels struggle to stay balanced so in addition to the booze you’ll probably want to devour something nasty on the way home. And this is on

top of the calories you consume for the same reason whilst hungover. Life is hard. But fear not! You can still enjoy a drink (or six) without consuming the equivalent of 14 churros. Here are some easy ways to enjoy yourself. high alcohol/low sugar cocktails Feel like treating yourself but don’t want to blow the healthy eating? Not all cocktails are created equal. Many of the concoctions you get served up in bars are basically desserts, packed with sugars and calories. (And they’re usually delicious for it.) Get to know the ones which are either short and strong so have a high percentage of alcohol with few sugary additions or those which you

can substitute the sugar added for lower calorie options. A mojito without sugar or sugar syrup - just soda, lime, mint and rum - is better for you. Other classics of the lowfat genre include: Martini (vodka/gin, vermouth, lemon peel), Negroni (Gin, vermouth, Campari, slice of orange), Old Fashioned (Whiskey/bourbon, Angosturan bitters, orange slice), Bloody Mary (Vodka, tomato juice, lemon juice, splashes of Worcestershire sauce and smoked Tabasco, celery stick) But to be honest, there are loads of great options. Vodka, soda and lemon for example, and even kombucha with vodka (although it might be a stretch to refer to any of those as cocktails. More on low-fat mixers further down the page.) With the above, ensure that you’re pulling them together yourself. Shop-bought cocktail mixes, even supposedly healthy ones, are often laced with a completely unnecessary sugars and sweeteners. They usually don’t taste as nice, either. If you really want to get granular, you can lessen your calorie intake by choosing the right spirit brand. The less the alcohol percentage, the less calories appear in the drink, so a bottle of 80 proof vodka (40% alcohol) has 64 calories per 1oz, while a bottle of 100-proof (50%) arrives at 82 calories per 1oz.

Get it in the can A cupboard that’s well-stocked with canned foods makes life so much easier. They have a long shelf-life, are generally inexpensive, and can save you making endless trips to the shops. Canned food is still nutritious and it also counts towards your five-a-day. Tomatoes Most households have a few tins of tomatoes knocking about the cupboard, and it’s well worth keeping a selection of chopped, whole plum and cherry tomatoes in stock. It’s also worth remembering that cheaper supermarket brands can be watery, so spend a tiny bit extra if you can and buy an Italian brand. Tuna Tuna in spring water can

be a little dry so, unless you’re counting calories, switch out for the better-tasting tuna canned in olive oil. It’s extremely versatile, too, so think beyond the usual tuna melts and sandwiches. Kidney beans A firm favourite in bean salads and chilli con carne, kidney beans are a great source of protein. Remember to give them a good rinse before using. Anchovies Anchovies canned in olive oil add a savoury, “umami” note to so many dishes, whether in a pasta sauce, or studded in a leg of lamb. If you’re cooking with them, the standard brands in olive oil are fine. But, for a salad or just as a treat on toast, look for Spanish anchovies from

the Cantabrian Sea, which are fatter, bigger and juicier – a real gourmet treat. Baked beans Few would dispute the simple joy of cheesy baked beans on toast, but they are a useful ingredient for many other dishes, too. You can add them to a vegetarian chilli or to a tomato soup. Olives Some tinned olives are better than others, so you may need to try a few first. If they are very salty from the brine, give them a rinse under cold water, then leave in olive oil for an hour or two before eating them. You can use them to make a tapenade – an olive paste, where olives are blended with oil, anchovies, garlic and parsley.

Walkers release loads of new flavours Walkers sure does know a thing or two about crisp flavours. You’ve got your classics like Salt & Vinegar, Cheese & Onion, the suspect Prawn Cocktail and my personal favourite Smokey Bacon. But every so often, the guys at Walkers HQ throw something new into the mix... remember the outstanding KFC ones? Well, Walkers latest range is inspired by some of peoples favourite restaurants. The Taste Icons range flavours are Fish & Chips (inspired by the The Wetherby Whaler in Yorkshire), Madras Curry (inspired by the Radhuni restaurant in Loanhead), Thai Green Curry (inspired by Mantra in Newcastle) and Chicken Burrito (inspired by Yukka in London). These new limited-edition flavours have been launched to celebrate and support local eateries. To create the range, the crisp brand selected four local community hero restaurants from around the UK – all with different cuisines – and turned their most popular dishes into limited-edition flavours. What’s more, each new pack of the Taste Icons crisps offers a £5 off food code for you to use at local restaurants. With 3,000 restaurants to choose from, Walkers is aiming to help crisp lovers give back and support

their favourite local eateries which have played such a vital role in everyone’s lives over the past year or so. Katherine Cook from Walkers said: “Over the past 18 months, we have seen that, no matter what, local restaurants have been there for us as a nation. This year, Walkers is supporting and celebrating local restaurants by re-creating the flavours of the delicious dishes of four, much-loved local

restaurants on our crisps and telling their iconic stories on our packs. We have also enlisted thousands of restaurants across the nation to participate in the offer to drive footfall to local restaurants (within five miles of every diner). At Walkers, we are proud to be able to give back to local businesses.” We are hoping the Overseas Supermarkets Iceland and Tesco will let us all experience the new range!

This week I am sharing a letter from Jayne, who is taking control of her life. It’s never too late to find peace and happiness. Losing three family members in the last two years has made me realise that I can no longer live my life being humiliated by my husband. Friends and family have been asking me for

years why I put up with his cheating; it seems everyone knew about it anyway when I tried so hard to keep his affairs quiet. I tried to protect my children, but my daughter said to me that their father hadn’t made a secret of it, and even introduced one woman to her when he was seen out. When I’ve tackled him about it, he says I knew what he was like before we got married; I

did, but hoped he’d change. We married because I fell pregnant, and I thought it was the right thing to do, and hoped it would be the making of him. Then he started staying late at work, and saying he had to work away. At first he made excuses, then he no longer bothered to hide it. He said it didn’t change his feelings for me, but rarely did he spend time with me or the family. Losing my parents in quick succession, and then my brother to cancer at age 48, my brother told me to do what it took to make myself happy; so

with those word going around my head, I have taken a good, long look at my life and have decided I am no more than his house keeper for the home he rarely frequents. I want to tell others out there that no one needs to feel like me, a doormat, and you can change. I just wish I’d had the courage to do it years ago. I am now happily living in my own, lovely apartment in Spain.

Drink found to boost longevity Longevity and a reduction in age-related diseases can be achieved with the right kinds of foods and drinks. In fact, one drink has been described as so powerful it could help reduce Alzheimer’s and dementia risk whilst boosting longevity. Life longevity may seem beyond one’s control, but many healthy habits may lead a person to reaching a ripe, old age. These include exercising, getting enough sleep and limiting alcohol intake. Taken together, these habits can boost a person’s health and put them on the path to a long life. There is another healthy habit one should try and incorporate into their diet which is backed by science and promoted by health advocates. What is it? Hibiscus has been used for centuries by different cultures as a remedy for several health conditions. The Egyptians used hibiscus tea to lower body temperature, treat heart and nerve diseases, and as a diuretic to increase urine production. Africans used hibiscus tea to treat cancer, liver disease, and cold symptoms. Today, hibiscus is popular for its potential to reduce high blood pressure,

lower cholesterol, reduce risk of Alzheimer’s and help to increase longevity. A study published in the National Library of Medicine, hibiscus use and how it prolongs a person’s lifespan was analysed. The study noted: “Hibiscus sabdariffa L. is commonly used as an ingredient for herbal teas and food supplements. Several studies demonstrated the beneficial effects of Hibiscus sabdariffa L. extracts (HSE). HSE treatment resulted in a prominent extension of lifespan (up to 24 percent) and a reduction of the age-dependent decline in locomotion. Our results demonstrate that HSE increases lifespan.” Several studies have found that hibiscus tea may lower both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. In one study, 65 people with high blood pressure were given hibiscus tea or a placebo. After six weeks, those who drank hibiscus tea had a significant decrease in systolic blood pressure, compared to the placebo. Antioxidants help fight free radicals in the body, which can damage collagen - causing

skin dryness, wrinkles and premature ageing. It is also a source of protein, a building block of the skin, and is anti-inflammatory and antibacterial. Aduna hibiscus is a source of calcium helping to support the normal function of digestive enzymes in the gut. It is also a source of iron helping to support immune function in the body and for the formation of red blood cells which transport oxygen around the body. This keeps the immune system healthy and boosts longevity. Health experts have found that hibiscus contains therapeutic interventions which could help prevent Alzheimer’s disease. The drink is known to help lower neuroinflammation, improves spatial memory, and has an anti-diabetic effect protecting against Alzheimer’s disease as glycaemic control can contribute to Alzheimer’s pathology. The research covered in papers is further evidence that food and drinks can truly be the best medicine and by drinking a simple cup of hibiscus your risk of dementia or Alzheimer’s is significantly reduced.

New eVTOL Concept Is Like a Flying Sports Car A new concept from Urban eVTOL, the Leo wants to be like a car. It measures 20 feet by 10 feet, meaning it will fit in most two-car garages. And it has an automotive-style interior, with an easy-to-learn semi-autonomous flyby-wire control system. “We set out to create a safe and compact vehicle that operates simply and feels intuitive to a culture accustomed to automobiles,” Urban eVTOL co-founder Carlos Salaff said. Salaff started his career as an

automotive designer. “The scale of our vehicle is more akin to a car than an airplane.” The car-like qualities are far from the only innovations. Propulsion comes via a unique electric jetpack

design built by co-founder Pete Bitar’s Electric Jet Aircraft. The system uses five clusters of electrically powered jet turbines. Four of the clusters provide lift and the fifth pushes the Leo forward. Each cluster works in unison to emulate a single rotor, but the multiple jets per cluster provide safety through redundancy. The turbines’ rotors are housed within the craft’s body, which provides additional safety. Plus it looks pretty damn cool. The system has performed well in tethered test flight and Urban Evtol projects a top speed of 250 mph with one hour of flight time. “We do not have exposed propeller blades that could cause harm to people and property,” Salaff says. “This enables us to reach more service areas with a more compact network of landing hubs.” The interior holds three people, but the most interesting number may be the price tag: $300,000. “Our pricing target is comparably low in the eVTOL space,” adds Salaff. “This will bring down ridesharing costs and make this form of travel more accessible.” Sounds good, but don’t start sending Venmo payments yet. Salaff says the plan calls for experimental certification in 2023 and full arrival on the market in 2026.

Dates are important We are used to seeing “sell by” and “best before by” dates on our groceries, but did you know that there are parts of the car that also have an expiration, or best before date? The difference with car parts is that they wear over time and usage, and so there isn´t always a specific timeframe to work to, but we do know that some of the elements will need replacing sooner than others. You are probably used to the idea of an oil change, but there are other elements too. Our cars need regular servicing, which usually means liquids and filters, changing the engine oil and oil filter every 15,000 km; air filter every 20,000 - 30,000 km; fuel filter every 30,000 - 50,000 km; cabin filter every 15,000 km; brake fluid every 20,000 km or 2 years; and antifreeze every 2 years. Okay, your head might be spinning already, but most of these changes will be dealt with, or at least should be, by qualified mechanics at your local workshop, so they are really more of an awareness of what to expect and when, then there are the major parts you should monitor. Air conditioning If you notice an unpleasant odour or if your car doesn´t cool down, or heat up at this time of year, then it may be time to get the air conditioning

checked. A tuning every two years is essential (especially if your vehicle is already a little older), changing the gas and checking the system for leaks, and replacing the cabin filter, as we mentioned, annually. Wiper blades One you know what you are doing replacing the wiper blades is a relatively simple task, and it is essential that they clean the main part of the windscreen without leaving streaks, and

without grinding on the glass. Battery Although the car´s battery receives a charge once the engine is running, over time they do start to fail. The recommendation is to change your battery every 4 or 5 years in order to avoid the car failing to start on the most important morning of your life, which is what usually seems to happen. Catalyst The catalyst change is a specialist job, but it is required approximately every 40,000 kilometres. Airbag The airbag is designed to last

for the life of the vehicle, so long as it isn´t used of course, but they must be checked, especially if your vehicle is 10 to 15 years old. Seat belts Again, they are designed to last the life of the vehicle, but they can become worn in time and the mechanism can fail, so it is important to have these checked frequently on older models. Lights We have spoken many times before about the importance of checking all the lights on a regular basis. However, the lights tend to last 2 to 3 years, on average, so you can plan whilst still checking on a regular basis. Bulbs should always be replaced in pairs by the way. Tyres Again, we have spoken at length about tyres and the importance of checking them, ensuring equal wear and that there is a minimum tread of 1.6 mm. If you plan for when your vehicle might need a little extra care, then it helps to avoid nasty shocks when you take it for a service. These elements do fail, and they are important to replace, so don´t complain to your mechanic or garage if the quote is a little higher than expected if you haven´t factored these replacements into your running costs, otherwise you will be ready for anything, as will your car be.

Buying a used Car The biggest problem with buying a used car is that you will never truly know the history of the vehicle, what is has been through, who has driven it, or how technically sound it is. But there are a few things you can do to reduce the risk, and hopefully get a lot of future use from your new purchase. Although we all may dream of buying a fleet of new cars, maybe adding a Ferrari, a Lamborghini or a Rolls Royce to our collection, the reality is that we often have to settle for something within a much smaller budget, and that is where a secondhand car is often the only option. The sad reality is that new cars depreciate the moment we buy them, and the quality standard of the car also reduces with every single trip. The first top tip for buying a used car is to have realistic expectations. While cheaper cars can be cheaper to buy, this doesn’t necessarily mean they are cheap to run. So, it’s key that before you investigate buying a car or making any decisions that you set out your budget for the car and any additional costs. Find out how much does servicing cost, how expensive are spare parts, how freely available are those parts? Do a thorough check assuming things might go wrong, not because you should be pessimistic, but rather because faults do happen so if you plan for them within your budget then they won´t be so much of a surprise. By the way, some industry experts estimate that on average a person would spend 1,800 euro per year on their car and keeping it roadworthy, increasing over time, so keep this in mind, perhaps spreading a budget over that year.

The figure includes fuel, as well as insurance and tax, but also servicing and maintenance. Love at First Sight? Don´t trust your first impression. Make sure you look at the car with a critical eye. Having a reliable and sturdy car is not about the colour, so don´t fall into the trap of choosing a vehicle by that means, but rather take a long and detailed look at it. You can research the model online, checking to see what the most common problems and faults are, and then check your new potential purchase for signs of those problems. Look out for obvious modifications. Some vehicle modifications can render the ITV as invalid, whereas other can simply be masking a deeper problem. Modifications can also increase the cost of insurance. Check the car in daylight too, so you can see clearly if there are any problems. history? What history? All cars have two histories. One, we will never know about, as we have not been with it for the duration of its life, and neither has the current owner. Even the most careful of drivers cannot avoid leaving their car in the street or a car park, and so nobody really knows what has happened during that time. However, there is one history we can check, that is the administrative register. You can do this via the DGT website, dgt.es, but it is important that you check the car and see if there are any debts, fines or other issues recorded, as if you buy it, they become your problem.

Check the Documents Does the car come with the original documents such as the logbook and ITV card? If not, you may need to ask the seller to obtain these before you buy the car. Don´t but a car without the original documents as you cannot be sure it is even for sale. Testing… Testing… It is important to test drive any car you are thinking of buying, new or second hand, but it is arguably more important for the latter. Whilst a car might look pristine on the outside, we don´t usually buy cars for their aesthetics but rather as a mobility tool, so how it will feel getting us from a to b is crucial. Check everything during the test drive. See if the car pulls to either side, if it stops safely, accelerates well, and if it turns without struggling. Check all the features of the car too, such as the electrics, including the lights, and the safety features such as seat belts. Check the windscreen wipers, washers, everything you might use on a regular, or occasional basis. You don´t have to settle for one test drive of course, go back and do it again if you feel it appropriate, maybe even at night, whatever makes you feel more confident in the vehicle you are buying. Buying a car can be a stressful time, it is a big investment, and it will not be without problems (sorry), but if you check these things before buying a car, and more importantly make sure you are 100% happy before handing over any money, then hopefully you will have a long and happy life still with your new, albeit second-hand, motor.

La Liga Kick Off

Having been denied the chance to support the Franjiverdes since their miraculous promotion to La Liga at then of the 2019/20 season, the fans were finally allowed back into the Martinez Valero for the first match of the season. The 40% capacity limited meant an attendance of 9,145 most of which were season ticket holders along with a small number of general public who had been luckily enough to buy their ticket online when they went on sale 24 hours before the fixture. The first seven minutes were a hard watch for the Elche fans as visiting Althletic Bilbao took 4 corners, testing the debuting Kiko Casilla in goal. Elche continued to make their very vocal supporters nervous, by making many long and inaccurate passes. As the match progressed, the team improved and Pere Milla gave us a goal, which was disallowed for being a hairs width offside. It was not Milla’s day as at the start of the second half he sent wide, a clear head to head with the goalie. The game finished 0-0, which was a gift for the visitors and a shame for the locals who deserved a victory. There was huge midweek excitement when a new signing flew in by private Leer Jet. 31 year old Argentinian International striker Dario ‘Pipa’ Benedetto arrived on loan from Marseille, for whom he has scored 16

goals since 2019 and previous to that 32 goals for Boca Juniors. On Sunday, Elche travelled to Madrid to take on the current champions at the Wanda Metropolitano. The first half was evenly matched and relatively unremarkable, apart from a school boy error from new keeper Kiko Casilla who joined Elche on loan from Leeds. Casilla ran to a through ball, intending to kick it away, but he completely missed the ball, leaving the on coming Correa with a golden opportunity of an open goal. During the opening minutes of the second half Casilla more than made up for his error with 2 phenomenal saves. Just after the 60 minute mark Pere Milla made way for Benedetto’s debut. The 1-0 result did not really reflect the match, which saw Elche CF playing some of their best football of recent years. EuroTourGuide are offering coach travel for 11€ to the Martinez Valero on Saturday 28th for the 19:30 kick off, please book on www.eurotourguide. com. Match tickets should go on general sale this week and will be available on www.elchecf.es for the top tier seats for 15€ to 30€.

Today’s Tales: Jurgen doesn’t want to go with the flow and a Chelsea striker scores And in a flash, it has gone - the second week of Premier League action disappears as quickly as it appeared. Already, things start to have a familiar feel - Manchester United went behind away from home before sorting themselves out to nick a point they may not have deserved. Norwich City got battered by one of the top sides. Burnley tried to kick Liverpool off the pitch but ultimately lost. Adama Traore failed hit to a bus with a banjo and an expensive Chelsea striker hit the ground running in their first game. Wait, what? That doesn’t sound right. Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side kicked the weekend off at Anfield and Burnley, as mentioned, looked to kick Liverpool off Anfield as the former champions won 2-0. Kloppo probably has a point when he takes on those that are pining for football to be like it was in the 70s and 80s - would we want to drive cars from back then? No, so why do we want to see tackles go in like they did back then? There has to be a balance though - we don’t want every team to be allowed three Terry Hurlocks but let’s not call every bit of contact a foul either.

Either way, Burnley will Burnley and you’re probably not going to change a player like Ashley Barnes this late in his career. It didn’t stop the Reds as young Harvey Elliott made an impressive first Premier League start - and it was the usual faces of Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane who did the goal-related damage. Naturally, Sean Dyche had a few moans of his own thinking his side had been hard done by with a couple of rough Liverpool challenges. Sean Dyche will, after all, Sean Dyche. Quite a few people are tipping Chelsea for the title (including me which almost guarantees it won’t happen) and now they’ve got a striker who might score goals (sorry, Timo) they are an even more frightening prospect. 14 minutes was all it took for Romelu Lukaku to bully Pablo Mari into an arm-flinging submission to the floor and open his second account for the club. Tony Adams, watching in a TV studio, would not have approved of that bit of defending from an Arsenal defender carrying on the legacy of back fours before him. Bernd Leno might have chosen a good moment to make one of the finest reflex saves ever seen in the Premier League (wouldn’t be right at the top though, given the game was gone and this will not be remembered as a classic match). Given he now has an overpriced understudy itching to finally play some minutes that don’t lead to relegation (though don’t count that chicken just yet, Aaron), his tip on to the bar that denied Lukaku his second was about the best thing that happened to any Gunner at the Emirates. Peppy G’s actual champions got their home campaign underway with the standard 5-0 drubbing of Norwich. Jack Grealish he cost ONE HUNDRED MILLION if you’ve been living under a rock scored his first City goal, whilst Gabby Jesus reminded everyone he is actually quite good (and a hell of a lot cheaper to run than Harry Kane).

Abbey Anglers On Tuesday the 17th of August we fished an open match at the El Bosquet complex at Crevillente. We had a very big turn out for this time of year with 22 anglers taking part and we fished pegs A1 to 7, 18 to 24 and 26 to 40. Winner on the day was Richard King with a great weight of 27.675kg. Richard fished peg 18 on the old back channel and alternated between pole and

feeder with maggot to take several decent carp. Second was the master of El Bosquet, Neil McBernie. Drawn on peg 38 he fished the pole with pellet for 27.600kg. Third was a welcome visitor from Andalucia Neil Bomford. Drawn on peg B1 he fished maggot on the pole for a credible 19.10kg. Other section winners included

Raheem Sterling even managed to play and score but, as you’d suspect, City will face tougher challenges than Norwich this season. Early pacesetters Man United failed to live up to the early expectations, coming from behind to take a point from Southampton at St Mary’s. Southampton did enough to take all three - United, really, did not. Still, nice to see Fred continue his goalscoring start to the season. Nuno had an early return to Spurs and regardless of what happens to Harry Kane, could he finally be the manager to wake up Dele Alli? Alli scored the winner from the spot and Wolves looked toothless once again. Kane did come off the bench but, having seen the state of that away kit, can you blame him for wanting to get out? He missed a chance to make it 2-0 but if anyone was leaving Molineux disappointed they didn’t score it was Adama Traore (again). Brighton ended the weekend with a 100% record so far this season even with only two games gone I did not expect to be saying that. Once again, they were efficient and, once again, I did not expect to be saying that. I don’t think it can be written off as “only Watford” given that they did a number on Villa on the opening day, but given they’ve only beaten the Hornets and Burnley let’s not get too carried away with Graham Potter’s magic on the south coast. It doesn’t seem to matter who Danny Ings is playing for, he’ll score - Ings’ scissor-kick for Villa against Newcastle is, apparently, an early contender for goal-of-the-season but, more realistically, we’ll all have forgotten it by the time everyone returns from the first international break. Villa did need that win, however how many more points before people stop mentioning the fact that they no longer have their former skipper? As ever, there were goals in the Leeds match - which is even more impressive given they were playing an Everton side managed by Rafa Benitez. Do not be fooled - the Toffees

Jackie Breslin with 14.40kg peg 2. Graham Patterson with 8.85kg peg 5, Russell Davidson peg 27 15.65kg and Tony Felstead peg 34 15.22kg. The pairs competition was won by Richard King and Neil McBernie with 55.275kg and the runners up were Tony and Russell. No matches in August for Rods and Reels. Further details can be found on our website at www. abbeyangling.es

having five goals in two matches does not point to a new carefree Rafa. It means that Michael Keane had better sort himself out or he won’t be seen again. Crystal Palace fans could be in for a long season - if they thought watching a Roy Hogdson side was painful, it would be interesting to get their thoughts after they’ve suffered two months of Patrick Vieira’s tactical philosophy. The Eagles failed to soar higher than the Bees and it was a 0-0 draw with Brentford. With a week remaining in this transfer window, the rumours get no less crazy. Arsenal, the new big spenders of English football, claim not to be done despite adding Odegaard and Ramsdale for something in the region of £55m last week. Don’t let the fact that there’s a lack of concrete rumours linked to the Emirates right now, there’s still a while left for them to hit panic. West Ham’s “one-of-their-own”, Declan Rice, is thought to be a little peeved that he is being valued at £100m. He knows as well as us that nobody is paying that for him. Tanguy Ndombele’s time at Tottenham won’t be remembered for much other than an impromptu park session with former gaffer Jose Mourinho - he’s desperate to get away and would like to play for Real Madrid, Barcelona or Bayern Munich. And Spurs thought they had issues with Harry Kane. The previously mentioned Michael Keane should be worried about Everton being linked to taking Chelsea not-yet-seen defender Malang Sarr on loan. If you remember Tiemoue Bakayoko, you’ll be delighted to learn he might be about to join AC Milan permanently. Finally, Steve Bruce is listening to Newcastle fans’ desire to play nonstop attacking football regardless of that meaning certain relegation. As a result, he’s in for Everton’s James Rodriguez which is, frankly, bonkers.

Torrevieja Mayor rewards local Olympians The Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, together with the Councillor for Sports, Diana Box, met the athletes from Torrevieja who participated in the Olympic Games held in Tokyo, Luis Manuel Corchete (athletics) and Daniel Cánovas (sailing coach).

The Mayor presented the duo with a personal plaque in recognition of their achievement of participating in a competition at such high level as the Olympics. He said: “It is a privilege and an honour to receive two athletes from the city of Torrevieja, who have participated in the Olympics and who have made us all part of this dream come true.”

In return, the Olympic walker Luis Manuel Corchete presented Eduardo Dolón, and the Councillor for Sports, Diana Box, with the shirt, the number and a photograph of his time at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, as thanks to his beginnings in the municipal athletics school. This gift will be placed in a privileged place in the sports hall the Mayor confirmed. Both athletes wanted to thank the city for all the support they have received in recent weeks. They both have special memories for their beginnings as athletes in their city, Luis Manuel Corchete at the municipal athletics school, and Daniel Cánovas at the Real Club Náutico in Torrevieja.

Polish Olympian auctions rafa Nadal takes rest of silver medal for infant’s year off due to injury heart surgery

Not even two weeks since winning a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics, Polish javelin thrower Maria Andrejczyk put it up for auction to help save an infant’s life. However, she recently announced that she exceeded her fundraising goal and that she’s keeping her silver medal thanks to the donor who put her over the top. Andrejczyk announced the auction on Facebook, five days after securing the silver medal in javelin. She wrote that she chose to raise funds for Miłoszek Małysa, an 8-month-old boy who needs to travel from Poland to Stanford University in California to have life-saving heart surgery. She didn’t know Małysa, but wrote that she knew his cause was the right choice after reading online pleas for help from his parents. Andrejczyk wrote that Małysa needed 1.5 million Polish zlotys — roughly $385,000 — to cover the costs of his transportation and medical care. She wrote that half had already been raised by

the family’s online fundraiser and that her goal along with Małysa’s mother was to raise the other half through the medal auction. Andrejczyk, 25, is a cancer survivor. A 2018 sinus X-Ray revealed that she suffered from osteosarcoma, a type of cancer that forms in the cells that form bones. She required surgery, but not chemotherapy and was able to restart training for the Tokyo Games in 2019. She previously competed in the Rio Olympics in 2016, where she finished two centimeters off the podium in fourth place. She recovered in time to compete in Tokyo, where her throw of 64.61 meters earned her the silver medal on Aug. 6 behind China’s gold-medal winner Shiying Liu (66.34 meters). While she cherishes the accomplishment, she decided that putting the medal up for auction was of more value than keeping it herself. Andrejczyk announced that the auction was closed and a

Polish convenience store chain called Zabka made the winning bid. “We have the winner of the auction!” she wrote. “On Friday I received this wonderful information, and due to the fact that you dears have already done wonders and joint forces have paid more than the equivalent of the initial medal to the Miłoszek account — I decided to end the auction so that our Miłoszek will receive the whole amount as soon as possible and can fly to the USA. “The winner, and at the same time, the company I will be eternally grateful to is the company Zabka.” Zabka confirmed that it made the winning bid with a Facebook message reading: “We were moved by the beautiful and extremely noble gesture” made by Andrejczyk. Zabka gracefully declined to accept the silver medal. “We also decided that the silver medal from Tokyo will stay with Ms. Maria.”

Top Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal has announced he will be taking the rest of 2021 off in order to recover fully from an injury that has been ‘playing up’ for more than a year. The Mallorca-born ace had to pull out of the Tokyo Olympics due to a foot problem – the second Games he has missed due to injuries, the last being London 2012 – has scratched from the US Open, and had to retire from the Cincinnati Masters 1000 two weeks ago. He says the foot problem is ‘not a new injury’, but a ‘problem’ he has had since 2005 – just as his career at the sharp end of tennis was beginning to take off – and which is now flaring up again. Now aged 35 – fairly elderly for a player at his level – Nadal is conscious that he cannot push himself beyond his limits if he wants to stay on the circuit. Addressing fans on social media, Rafa announced he had decided to ‘call time on the 2021 season’. “Quite honestly, I’ve been suffering much more than I should have been with my foot

for a year, and I need to take some time out,” he writes. “After having talked about it with the team and my family, we’ve taken this decision and I think it’s the right path to take in order to try to recover, and recover properly. “It’s been a year in which I’ve missed things that I really care about – like Wimbledon, like the Olympics, like the forthcoming US Open, like many other events that are also important to me – and, seeing as this last year I’ve not been able to train and prepare properly to compete in the way I truly like to, in the end, I’ve come to the conclusion that what I need is time off to recover. “[Time off to] change a string of things, to try to understand how my foot has progressed in recent times...it’s not a new injury, it’s an injury I’ve had since 2005, and which has not prevented me from developing my sporting career all these years. “It is true, though, that things have not been going the way they should for me for a while, the way we’d all like them to

go, and now is the moment to make decisions, seek out a type of treatment that’s a little bit different to try to find a solution to this problem or, at least, to improve it, so I can still have choices over the next few years. “I’m most optimistic and prepared to do whatever needs to be done to get back the best possible form, to carry on competing for the things that really motivate me and have done all these years. “I’m convinced that, with the recovery of my food and, evidently, major daily efforts, I’ll be able to achieve this. I’m going to work as hard as I can so that this is the case. “Thanks, all of you, in advance, for all your support, understanding, and shows of affection, all of which are really important – and even more so during difficult times like these. “I promise you all that what I’m going to do is work really hard to try to carry on enjoying this sport for some time to come. “Big hugs for all of you.”
