Black day for Orihuela Costa

on 2nd September the popular partyCiudadanos coalition government of orihuela gave approval to a modified plan to build 2,200 new houses and apartments on Cala mosca, the last unspoilt natural area of orihuela Costa. they know the consequence will be to remove an environmental jewel, enjoyed by walkers, cyclists, dog lovers and those seeking access to its secluded coves. this seals the fate of the coast to become an ever increasing densely urbanised

part of the municipality suffering from road congestion and inadequate basic services and infrastructure. this is a huge project. it will add at least 6,000 people or 20 percent to those on the padron in orihuela Costa. the governments of orihuela has a poor track record in ensuring that the provision of basic services keeps up with the increasing population resulting from its never ending approval of new housing projects. A huge development

like Cala mosca will predictably result in a major deterioration in services like street cleaning, rubbish removal, maintenance of streets, pavements, parks and gardens. in addition, unless there is considerable investment in the drainage and sewage treatment system, which has been overdue for several years, there will be an increase in the already regular blow outs which result in sewage pumping out onto the streets.

this was the case recently when a burst pipe under La Zenia roundabout saw thousands of litres of raw sewage in the streets, a huge hole of 3 metres deep and traffic chaos. the project since its beginning in the 1990’s has been and it still is shrouded in objections and irregularities. the most important outstanding objection comes from the ministry of transport responsible for the national road n332 which is the vital north-south axis for orihuela Costa. this road is already highly congested at several times of the year especially in the months of July and August causing delays, traffic jams and frustration. the ministry of transport has categorically stated that the Cala mosca building project which would add over two thousand additional vehicles and has only one direct exit, on to the n332, cannot go ahead until the remedial measures which it has stipulated, including those relating to noise levels, have been adopted at the cost of the developer. if it is approved, the ministry has said that it will take all legal measures at its disposal to nullify the decision of the orihuela municipal

See page 12

government. this objection alone, should have cautioned the government against submitting its approval to the vote in the plenary where of course they have a majority. there are other outstanding objections including from the environmental prosecutor’s office which considers the developer’s calculations underestimate the population of two protected species which are present on Cala mosca. A spokesman for local political party C.L.A.r.o said: “it is clear that the urgency in approving the project reflected the interests of the powerful developer Gomendio. the governing pp and Ciudadanos coalition have put his interests above the interests of the citizens of the municipality living in orihuela Costa. in a democracy, this choice will have its political consequences.” before then, however, the recent vote on is not the end of the story to save Cala mosca. Although approval of the modified project is a very serious setback, legal challenges can be expected.

Calls for traffic accident black spots to be addressed the municipal spokesperson for Los Verdes torrevieja, israel muñoz, has presented a motion on road safety in an effort to reduce the risk in the streets and crossings of torrevieja. the aim is to compile a map of accident black spots and then to address each one with a tailored correction plan to reduce the accident statistics registered by the Local police and insurance companies. For example by installing signals or changing the road layout. the first step of the mapping motion presented at the plenary urges the City Council, in conjunction with the Local

police reporting Unit and insurance companies, to carry out the mapping and a study of black spots with a high incidence of accidents. the second proposes an agreement between the department and the companies in order to obtain more information on accidents that are not attended by the police. From the resulting study, the Greens are pushing for the improvement of the signage and other measures such as the implantation of yields at unmarked crossings, improvement of the visibility of signs already installed, as well as other measures that will reduce both collisions and pedestrian accidents.

Strong summer for tourism the crisis that has gripped Spain’s tourism industry as a result of the coronavirus pandemic appears to have come to an end. For more than a year, the sector – which is one of Spain’s main economic drivers – has been struggling to survive, with the number of tourists visiting the country at a record low. but this summer is on track to exceed the industry’s expectations – a feat made possible thanks to the large number of domestic tourists. indeed, more national visitors traveled across Spain this year than in 2019, the year before the pandemic hit the country. “the summer has been very good. We have hotels that have even done better than in August 2019,” says Antonio Catalón, the president of AC hotels by marriott. ramón Aragonés, the managing director of nh hotel Group, agrees, explaining the season has been particularly positive for sites in the north of Spain and along the coast. “the behaviour in Spain has been better than the average of our hotels on a global level, with average occupancy close to 55 percent in July and 60 percent in August.”

these figures are considered a success, especially given the uncertainty ahead of summer over the spread of the more contagious delta variant in Spain. the alarm over the coronavirus strain was so great that the main source countries of tourism to Spain – the United Kingdom, Germany and France – recommended against travel to the country. this concern, however, eased largely due to the strong progress of Spain’s Covid-19 vaccination drive, which has now fully vaccinated 70 percent of the population. in addition to the vaccine rollout, the savings made by households during the pandemic have also helped

bolster the summer high season, especially among Spaniards who opted to travel within the country rather than abroad. According to the national Statistics institute (ine), Spanish residents made 14.9 million overnight hotel stays in July 2020, compared to 14.8 million in the same month of 2019. this is the highest figure since the beginning of the historical series in 1999. Although the increase is small – just 0.37 percent – it marks a before and after for the sector after months of devastating results. A similar trend was seen also in overnight stays in other accommodation, such as tourist apartments and camping sites.

Coronavirus cases fall to July levels the worst of the fifth wave of Covid-19 in Spain is now over. According to the latest report released by the health ministry on Friday (3rd September), the 14-day cumulative number of coronavirus cases per 100,000 inhabitants has now fallen below 200, something that has not been seen since 4th July. the data supplied by the ministry is now showing a small fall in Covid-19 deaths, albeit with a daily total that is still above 100 (on Friday there were 155 fatalities reported). Since the fifth wave began, at the beginning of June, there have been 3,800 people who died after a positive coronavirus test, most of them seniors: the average age is 80. this past week, a total of 795 Covid-19 fatalities were reported, which is 69 fewer than the previous week. And the average of daily deaths

(with confirmed dates) is 48, compared to 50 the week before. these latter data points will rise as more deaths are reported and assigned to their corresponding day. delays to reporting mean that the lines of these graphs oscillate constantly and there are no clear trends, in contrast to what usually happens with the cumulative incidence and hospitalisations. Several weeks will have to pass for these data to be consolidated and an accurate analysis of when and how these fatalities began to fall. What is clear is that the death rate during this fifth wave has been much lower than that of the others. As the health minister, Carolina darias, pointed out on Wednesday, it was 0.2% – that means that for every 1,000 positive cases, two people have died. Since the pandemic hit, that figure has

Free courses for Expats the international residents department for torrevieja is organising free informative courses to help expats in their life in Spain. the first is how to obtain and use the digital Certificate as well as the operation of the electronic Administration of torrevieja City Council. the courses will be taught in english, French and Spanish.

been 1.7%, which is more than eight times higher. this statistic is also tainted by the first wave, when a very small proportion of actual infections were officially recorded. if the last wave is compared with those that came after the spring of 2020, it can be seen that Covid-19 has killed seven times fewer people. Spain’s vaccination campaign last week hit the target of inoculating 70% of the population. this allows for some hope in the face of future waves. based on what has been seen up until now, the death rate should be even lower: nine out of every 10 residents aged over 40 are now fully vaccinated, and the process is progressing for minors. While the vaccines are starting to show a certain weakness when it comes to avoiding infection months after they are administered, they are still robust when it comes to avoiding serious illness and death. For those who are vulnerable due to weakened immune systems, a third dose will soon be administered.

Torrevieja releases tourist figures the Councillor for tourism in torrevieja, rosario martínez Chazarra, has released the statistics of the visitors received at the tourist information office in paseo Vista Alegre during the months of July and August 2021. the total number of visitors attended at the tourist information office during this summer (July and August) was 6,006 visitors (2,579 in July and 3,427 in August), 45.78 percent corresponding to demands from national tourists and the rest, 52.28 percent, to demands of international tourists. it should be noted that for the first time since the pandemic, international tourism slightly exceeds national tourism. tourists made a total of 7,289 inquiries. Compared to 2020 there has been a significant increase in the face-to-face service; while last year 2,300 people were served during the summer period. this figure has been exceeded this year with almost three times as many people going to the tourist office compared to 2019, with just 16 percent less footfall. probably the high vaccination rate is encouraging people to go in person to the tourist office. the main office, located on paseo Vista Alegre, receives the majority of visitors due to its central location and long opening hours - open from 9am to 8pm and Saturdays and public holidays 9.30am to 1.30pm. the busiest day of the whole summer was tuesday, 10th August with 278 people making

enquiries, followed by 4th August, with about 268 people requiring information. there is a notable increase both from April to may and from may to June and, finally, from July to August. As usual, the Community of madrid leads the national visitors, representing 26.6 percent of the total, followed by locals with 23.1 percent, the Valencian Community with 14.7 percent and the basque Country with 10,2 percent. Among foreign tourists, the proximity between French and belgians is accentuated, occupying 29.3 percent and 19 percent respectively (representing almost 50 percent of visits), followed by british, Swedish and German. there is an increase in tourists from eastern europe such as polish. of the total number of inquiries made, 38 percent were regarding local information, 14.3 percent cultural activities, followed by transport at 10.2 percent.

Unemployment rates continue to drop

Among the requests for local information the Salinas were top of the list representing 57.1 percent, followed by the “delfín” Submarine at 12.6 percent, the island of tabarca at 11.7 percent and nautical sports 4.9 percent. Hotel occupancy hotel occupancy during the month of July exceeded 74 percent and, in August, 80.30 percent, the average for the entire summer period being 78 percent. by category, the only 4-star establishment in August had 96.22% occupancy, exceeding July. the threestar establishments had 83.48 percent in the first half of August and 78.47 percent in the second, some of them exceeding 90 percent. Apartments in the town reached 91.77 percent during the month of August. in general, the figures are close to 2019 in which the global average for summer was 77.9 percent.

traditionally, Spain’s job market receives a boost at the outset of the summer season – mostly thanks to tourism – and then recedes in August. but this year the positive trend is yet to subside. According to data released recently, unemployment fell by 82,583 people in the eighth month of the year compared to July, and the total number of jobless fell to 3,333,915 workers. the ranks of the unemployed have been falling for six months in Spain now, and according to the Labour ministry, this August saw the biggest fall in the current statistical series, which began in 1996. however, this fall in jobseekers in August was not accompanied by a rise in the number of people signed up to the Social Security system – considered a key indicator for job creation in Spain. Compared to July, there were 118,004 fewer contributors, but this is an average and without taking seasonal factors into account. the total number of contributors for last month was 19,473,724. once this number is seasonally adjusted, the results are more positive: 19,477,505 contributors, up 76,541 compared to the month before. the sectors that created most jobs in August were hospitality (+2.39 percent) and household activities (+3.91 percent), while the greatest losses were seen in education (-6.7 percent) and artistic, leisure and entertainment activities (-5.29 percent). the number of self-employed workers also fell by 7,358

(-0.22 percent) from July to August, to 3,315,603. While the summer is traditionally a good time for the Spanish job market, this boost is usually limited to June and July, when contracts are signed. August, however, usually offsets this positive data, given that it marks the end of the tourism high season and thus the end of many of these work contracts. there is optimism within the Spanish government that the economy will continue to recover in the wake of the coronavirus crisis, and the positive data from the labour market are serving to bolster that sensation.

Should you merge your pension pots? Savers collect a string of pension pots during their working lives but only one in four have merged any of them, new research reveals. What Are Fund Fees? By Tracy Storer Senior Partner Chorus Financial

it’s easy for me to pick up a pension or investment portfolio and quickly determine what fees someone is paying. often fees can be hidden or layered and if not explained correctly (or even at all), can become very confusing and have a big impact on the growth of your portfolio. in my personal experience, the most common fee that Financial Advisers have failed to highlight to their clients here in Spain are the fund fees. Fund fees are fees taken from within the underlying investment funds themselves, and clients have no way of viewing these transactions on valuations or via their online accounts. even though you don’t see these fees, you should always be aware of them as they can have serious implications on your potential returns. theUK financial regulator, the FCA, did some research a couple of years back and they found that the average fund fee is 0.75%. So, that is about 75p on every £100 you invest that you can expect to hand over in charges to the fund manager. but the variety of fees is incredible, and you can get two funds that are seemingly identical however one might charge you 2% and one might charge you 0.5%. So, it’s like going to the supermarket and there being two identical sandwiches. one costs £5 and one costs £1. Why would anyone pick the £5 sandwich, right? Well unfortunately when it comes to

financial advice, clients aren’t often provided with the full facts and unless you know where to look, or what to ask, it is easy to get confused. So how can the same fund cost you three times the amount? What are you paying the ‘extra’ for? in truthit is likely that some of the ‘extra’ is going straight to your financial adviser as a nice little pay out for recommending the fund, something that is now illegal in the UK but still happens regularly in Spain. to facilitate this ‘backhander’ funds create different Classes of funds. An ethical and transparent adviser will go out of their way to find you the cheapest possible ‘Class’ of any fund to ensure you are paying as little as possible for the amount you are investing. Some advisers go out of their way to find the most expensive ‘Class’ to ensure they are earning as much as possible! don’t forget, these are exactly the same funds, with the same managers, holdings etc, some people are just paying a lot more for them than is necessary. itcan be difficult to fully understandfund fees because there is so much terminology used. We can have the ‘AmC’, the ‘oCF’, the ‘ter’ and the ‘tCo’. in case you’re wondering, that’s annual management charge, ongoing charge figure, total expense ratio and total cost of ownership. to save our clients any confusion we will always provide a document called the Key

investor information document (Kiid). Under updated regulation we are obliged to provide this document whenever we are making a fund recommendation, and this document uses the oCF – ongoing Charges Figure – which confirms the true and total cost to the client of holding that fund.

of money as rogers, but that additional £10,000 quite possibly went to his financial adviser!

So, let’s look at how fees can eat into your money just to show why this is important. Let’s say bill & roger invest £50,000 in the same fund. bill invests in the one which has fund chargesof 1.5% per year and roger invests in the one which charges 0.5%. Let’s assume that this fund grows by 10% every year. After one year, bill would have paid £750 in charges and roger £250…

When you are receiving any sort of investment advice, it is imperative that you understand the full cost of each fund. You can do this by checking the Key investor information document (Kiid) for each investment that is being recommended to you. the Kiid is a twopage ‘fact-sheet’ style document which includes the critical information about a fund (including the true annual cost of the fund). the document aims to help investors understand the nature and key risks of the fund in order to make a more informed investment decision.

Let’s look at it over the long term, 10 years, and we’re still getting this growth every year. So, that’s compounding the growth and the fees are also compounding on the other side. So, after 10 years, bill has paid £16,640 in fees. So, he’s going to get back £113,050 (growth over 10 years minus his charges) whilst roger, is getting back £123,910, because he’s only actually spent just over £5,000 on fees.

Your Financial Adviser has a duty to provide this to you for each fund they are recommending, and you can also request these documents for existing investments in your portfolio, in case you feel compelled to double check! these documents must be available for all regulated funds in europe, but we have experienced certain iFA firms in Spain making it very difficult for clients to obtain them… so don’t take no for an answer!

roger’s investment returned an additional £10k, not because he’d taken more risk, or picked a better performing fund (both funds were identical). it was all down to him (or his adviser) choosing the fund which had the lowest costs. You see bill’s fund would have made the same amount

if you have any concerns about how much you are paying in fund fees, or want a second opinion on any element of your finances here in Spain, contact Chorus Financial on info@chorusfinancial.es, +34 965 641 163 or visit www.chorusfinancial. es for more information.

Investment contracts are intended as medium to long term investments, and all investments have some level of risk. Figures in our articles are examples of what can be achieved and cannot be guaranteed; the value of your investments can go down as well as up. Fees and charges can vary and will be fully explained to you before any advice can take place. GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP Like several other currencies, the pound spent the week busily going nowhere. At a domestic level, the politicians were focused on the withdrawal from Afghanistan. the bank of england’s only contribution was the announcement of a new chief economist, huw pill, who brings with him a reputation for monetary policy hawkishness. the UK economic data was uncontroversial too, and sterling drifted an average of 0.2% lower against the major currencies, showing no sense of purpose. it added two thirds of a US cent and was unchanged against the euro. the bank of england’s money and credit report showed a £1.4 billion repayment of mortgage debt in July and a lack of appetite for new consumer loans. mortgage approvals numbered 75,200, the fewest since July last year. nationwide said british house prices went up 11% in the year to August, taking the national average to £248,857. markit’s purchasing managers’ index for the manufacturing sector came in roughly as expected at a respectable 60.3. it did, however, show that more could have been made were it not for “input supply issues” – shortages of material and delivery delays. indeed the UK supply chain crisis has knocked back service sector growth. Supply chain issues and staff shortages led to the slowest growth since march, and new business volumes fell with the blame falling on the end of the stamp duty holiday and subsequent cooling demand for housing. recruitment has seen its highest levels since records began, with

tight labour conditions pushing up wages as service sector companies sought to attract and retain employees. EURO inflation was the hot topic in the eurozone. eurostat’s “flash estimate” put it at 3%, 50% above its 2% target and the highest level in almost 13 years. the figure had special significance because it ignited a debate about european Central bank monetary policy, a week ahead of next thursday’s Governing Council meeting. in terms of profile, the hawks seem to overwhelm the doves. Another of them was out on Wednesday. bundesbank president Jens Weidmann said in a speech that “upside risks [to inflation] currently predominate”. As for the eCb’s pandemic emergency purchase plan (pepp), “the ‘p’ stands for pandemic, not permanent”. mr Weidmann is well-known for his opinion on the matter, so yesterday’s comment attracted no particular attention. Setting a more dovish tone, credit rating company Fitch argues that “a normalisation of monetary policy in the eurozone remains unlikely at least until the middle of the decade”. Fitch’s director of economics believes “key [eCb] interest rates are set to remain unchanged until 2025, and bond buying could continue until at least 2024”. the rest of the week’s ecostats added little to the debate. the eC’s measures of consumer and business confidence all softened in August. markit’s manufacturing pmi was not dissimilar to britain’s, at 61.4, and it, too, showed “clear signs of strong capacity constraints”. the euro was on average a touch firmer on the week, having strengthened by 1% against the US dollar.

Spain vaccinates 70 percent in just eight months Spain has reached the main objective that governments from all over the world had set to tackle the coronavirus pandemic: fully vaccinating 70 percent of its population. this is a total of 33.24 million citizens with the full protection offered by the vaccines being used in Spain: pfizer-biontech, moderna, Janssen and oxfordAstraZeneca. it represents an unprecedented effort by the country’s central and regional health systems, and a campaign that has been among the most successful in the world. With 47.5 million inhabitants, Spain is the 27th most-populated country in the world. no other nation with a similar or greater number of residents has managed to vaccinate people against Covid-19 so quickly, according to information on oxford University’s our World in data website. the only other country that has come close is Canada, with 67 percent. next is the 60th most populous country, Chile, if you are to find a nation with more than 10 million inhabitants that has a similar percentage of the population with protection against Covid-19. And from there to the 83rd state on the list, portugal, to find a country of that size with a greater percentage of

residents protected (73 percent). All of the other countries that have reached this milestone have much smaller populations, such as denmark, Uruguay, iceland and malta. the closest countries for comparison, meanwhile, such as italy, France and Germany, have barely managed to fully vaccinate 60% of their populations. Countries that began to vaccinate much earlier,

thanks to their agreements with pharmaceutical companies – United States, United Kingdom and israel – are moving more slowly due to the reticence of part of their populations to get vaccinated. “Spain began with some advantages compared to neighboring countries, such as greater confidence in the healthcare system and better acceptance of the vaccines,” explains sociologist Josep Lobera, professor at madrid’s Autonomous University (UAm) and one of the experts who,

week after week, has designed and adapted the vaccination strategy from an advisory board for the health ministry. the greater trust among Spaniards in the health system and vaccines has its roots in the Franco dictatorship, when polio continued to affect children while north of the pyrenees the disease had already subsided. “that delay compared to other countries and the importance of public health is a generational reminder that lives on among our seniors,” Lobera explains. the experts, however, insist that there is still work to do – there are still more than five million people in Spain who are yet to be vaccinated, and there may be a need for a third vaccine dose in order to combat the spread of the more contagious delta variant. there are no guarantees that this initial success will be repeated. the appearance of the delta strain, which was first identified in india, has meant that vaccinating 70% of the population will not be enough to achieve herd immunity. experts are now divided between those who believe it will be impossible to reach such a situation and those who think it can be possible if vaccine coverage exceeds 85 percent.

New proposals for the Huntington’s Disease Association At the Annual General meeting of the huntington´s disease Association to be held on 15th September, exciting new proposals will be considered by members. Currently the Association´s remit is to support people suffering from huntington´s disease and their families or carers. the Association´s successful fundraising programme continues to assist people with this disease. Funds are used to contribute to the purchase of equipment not available through the Spanish health and social care system, or to pay for respite care for much needed support for a sole carer as huntington´s takes its toll on their loved one. more recently membership has started to dwindle, mainly because people choose to relocate to the UK as their illness progresses. this has prompted the Association to consider changes to their remit to offer support to others. the purpose, while continuing to work with people suffering from huntington´s disease, would be to develop further networks to offer support to those who may be suffering from a rare neurological life limiting disease. the proposal is

to include people with Ataxia, motor neurone disease, multiple Sclerosis and parkinson´s disease, and their carers. president of the Association, marion Smith, said: “the challenging times arising from the pandemic coupled with the implications of breXit can have a devastating effect on the quality of life for british people living in Spain with severe neurological conditions and for their carers. it is our strong belief that extending our remit as proposed will be a huge benefit to those affected.” “We are now seeking the views of our members at the Annual General meeting on 15 September, but we would also welcome the views of people living in the Costa blanca area, and in particular, we would be interested to hear from anyone suffering from one of the neurological diseases mentioned,” she added All are welcome to attend the meeting on 15 September which starts at 11.00 am and will be held at the pines restaurant, pl. de la immaculada Conception, S/n Local 1, 03178 benijofar. For further enquiries please contact president, marion Smith on 711 008 250.

This Week´s Movie Picks Deadpool

Saturday 11th September – Channel 4, 10.00pm this is the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

Sunday 12th September – ITV2, 7.35pm

in an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans of raising pure-blood wizards to rule over all non-magical beings, Albus dumbledore enlists his former student newt Scamander, who agrees to help, though he’s unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.

Alexandra Burke thanks fans after SAS debut Alexandra burke has taken to instagram to thank fans for their support following her debut on SAS Who dares Wins. the former X Factor star, 33, is appearing in the current series of the hit Channel 4 show alongside the likes of writer and tV presenter Ulrika Jonsson, tV personalities Kerry Katona, Vicky pattison and Jake Quickenden, and athlete James Cracknell.

Sharing snaps of her time on the show, Alexandra told fans that she “felt sick” watching the first episode when it aired over the weekend. “i’ve had so many messages about the first episode of @sas_ whodareswins - i’ve finally got around to watching it,” she wrote. “Can’t lie, i felt sick knowing everyone is about to see what we all went through,” she continued.

peter Andre has banned his daughter princess from appearing on Love island. the 14-year-old, the mysterious Girl singer’s daughter with ex-wife Katie price, is keen to compete on the itV dating show, but peter has put his foot down and told her that the only way she can appear on the reality show is as a presenter.

“princess has said she wants to do it but i still haven’t changed my mind about that,” he wrote in his new! magazine column. “presenting it? Yes. A contestant? not so sure! “She said to me, ‘Would you ever let me go on Love island?’ i said to her, ‘When they start doing Love island based on priests and nuns and they’re

“then i remembered how proud i felt leaving having been with the most amazing people and building such a lovely bond. Swipe for some of the behind the scenes before we started the journey…” her images show scenic views as the celebs battled the elements on a long hike as part of their eight days of tasks and interrogations. but if her snaps are anything to go

by, Alexandra seemed to be all smiles throughout the challenge. talking about her experience with Channel 4, she said: “Celebrity SAS: Who dares Wins is the most challenging thing physically and mentally i have ever done. “it was such a life changing experience and totally blew my mind. i would do the whole thing again in a heartbeat!”

Alexandra shot to fame in 2008 after winning the X Factor, and releasing a rendition of Leonard Cohen’s hallelujah, which shot up the Christmas charts. After a brief stint as a model, she shifted her focus to the West end, taking a leading role in the bodyguard and Sister Act the musical. She is currently the narrator in Joseph And the Amazing technicolour dreamcoat.

having their sermons on Sundays you can go on Love island but until then no

chance.’” the star previously told Woman magazine that he doesn’t even allow princess to watch the series, but he’s considering changing his mind now she’s turned 14. While the dating show is out of the question, peter would allow princess and his son Junior, 16, to take part in

jungle survival show i’m a Celebrity… Get me out of here! as that’s where he met their mum. “And i get that because he and princess are the only children to ever have been born as a result of the jungle,” he added to the publication. peter also has two children with his wife emily macdonagh.

Kissing is Strictly not allowed Strictly Come dancing bosses have reportedly put a kissing ban on contestants in a bid to stop Covid causing havoc again for the new series. producers are said to have told this year’s stars ‘one snog and you’re out’ after last series celebs maisie Smith and hrVY allegedly broke social distancing rules because of a brief romance. bbC are desperate to avoid the chaos coronavirus brought last year, which saw boxer nicola Adams and her professional dance partner Katya

Jones withdraw from the competition following a positive test, and hrVY nearly not taking part. An insider said: “Although the pandemic has eased since last year’s series, the bbC aren’t taking any chances. this kissing ban is likely to be part of a package of measures introduced by producers to make the show as safe as possible. “they want to minimise the risk of any bombshells, particularly as a studio audience is being brought back into the

studio this year.” Last month, professional dancer nadiya bychkova tested positive for coronavirus. Ukrainian-Slovenian dancer nadiya, 31, contracted the virus during the first week of filming, meaning many of the cast and crew had to isolate for 10 days, according to reports. the Strictly insider added the Covid scare has heightened fear among bosses that other dancers and celebrities could test positive when the rehearsals start

later this month. the source said the bbC could put ‘yet more measures and precautions in place’ for the cast’s safety and to ensure the show goes ahead without a hitch. With the new rules in place it could mean the infamous ‘Strictly curse’ is avoided this year. the Strictly curse last struck in 2018 when Stacey dooley, 33, left her longterm boyfriend for dance partner Kevin Clifton. Comedian Seann Walsh and his then

married dance partner Katya Jones also caused controversy in 2018 when they were photographed kissing after being partnered up.

You can get into the festive season early by tuning in from late September, with the movies set to get their final play for the season on 4th January, 2022. Home Alone celebrated its 30th anniversary last year and as part of the celebrations, director Chris Columbus spoke to Insider about the famous mirror scene, where Macaulay Culkin’s character shows off his morning routine in the mirror. Speaking about the famous scene, Columbus said: “It was kind of [improvised] on set, because he wasn’t supposed to do that. “If you put something on your face that burns, most people move their hands right away. “So my direction to him was when you pat your face, move your hands and scream. And I think it was the first take, he kept his hands on his cheeks. We all started laughing hysterically. It’s funny, the iconic moment from Home Alone was an accident.”

Starbucks’ Pumpkin Snack reduces Alzheimer’s Spice Latte is coming and Cardiovascular Disease Although it’s not quite time to put your flip flops back in the cupboard, chuck your bikinis in the bin, or tip your sun cream down the drain, there is no doubt autumn is officially here. It must be because Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Latte is back on the menu. A lot of people like to use the first leaf falling as a way of telling that autumn has arrived, but we prefer to use Starbucks’ autumn menu release as a way of telling the seasons apart. The iconic Pumpkin Spice Latte, which has been on the Starbucks menu for an incredible 18 years, will be back in stores from 2 September, so all hail the return of the original #PSL. In case you’d forgotten, it’s a super-tasty combination of Starbucks Espresso

Roast, pumpkin pie flavoured sauce and steamed milk, topped with whipped cream and pumpkin pie spices – cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. And as well as the original Pumpkin Spice Latte and much-loved Pumpkin Spice Latte Frappuccino, you can now enjoy a vegan Pumpkin Spice Latte thanks to Starbucks’ vegan Pumpkin Spice Latte sauce and Vegan Whipped Topping. And this year for the first time, pumpkin heads can customise the Pumpkin Spice Latte with Starbucks’ Original Nut Blend! Plus, there are a load of other delicious treats on the Starbucks 2021 menu, such as the plant-based Pumpkin Spice Cookie.

Living longer and healthier is a big topic particularly after we have all experienced a year like no other. Much emphasis is often put on what not to eat to help reduce risks of serious health outcomes but what about foods one should eat which promote longevity? A recent study delves into a particular snack coming up top when it comes to boosting longevity. A new study by researchers from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health found those who snacked on walnuts had a lower association risk of death and an increase in life expectancy compared to those who did not. Senior research scientist at the Department of Nutrition and lead investigator of the study, Yanping Li said: “What we’ve learned from this study is that even a few handfuls of walnuts per week may help promote longevity, especially among those whose diet quality isn’t great to begin with. “It’s a practical tip that can be feasible for a number of people who are looking to improve their health, which is top of mind for many people.” This study, which was published in Nutrients, found five or more servings of walnuts per week may provide the greatest benefit for mortality risk and life expectancy. Eating five or more servings per week was associated with a 14 percent lower risk of death, 25 percent lower risk of dying from cardiovascular diseases, and a gain in about 1.3 years of life

year of life, compared to non-walnut consumers. Eating walnuts was also found to reduce “bad” LDL cholesterol by up to 16 percent, lower diastolic blood pressure by 2-3 mm Hg and decrease oxidative stress and inflammation. Oxidative stress describes a process whereby unstable molecules called free radicals cause cell damage in the body. The effects of oxidative stress may contribute to several neurodegenerative conditions, such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.

expectancy, compared to those who didn’t consume walnuts. Consuming walnuts two to four times per week could have its benefits, too, with the study finding a 13 percent lower risk of death overall, 14 percent lower risk of dying from cardiovascular diseases, and a gain in about one

eat to boost longevity The Eatwell Guide shows to have a healthy, balanced diet, people should try to: • Eat at least five portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables every day • Base meals on higher fibre starchy foods like potatoes, bread, rice or pasta • Have some dairy or dairy alternatives (such as soya drinks) • Eat some beans, pulses, fish, eggs, meat and other protein • Choose unsaturated oils and spreads, and eat them in small amounts • Drink plenty of fluids (at least six to eight glasses a day). “If you’re having foods and drinks that are high in fat, salt and sugar, have these less often and in small amounts,” advise experts. “Try to choose a variety of different foods from the five main food groups to get a wide range of nutrients.”

Secret ingredients to transform dishes has multiple non-culinary applications too. It not only adds sweet notes to dishes, but elements of floral, fruity, grassy, smoky, spicy or woody flavours too – it all depends on the honey you choose. Honey can be added to, and on top of, numerous dishes. Use in glazes, marinades, dressings, sauces, cakes and biscuits for a subtle sweetness. Alternatively, drizzle over creamy Camembert, a nutty Parmesan or Comté to transform cheese. It also compliments horseradish and tahini really well and is a great ingredient to lift up sticky chicken wings.

These simple ingredients have transformative qualities. They can introduce sweet, savoury or aromatic notes, and ultimately turn a mundane dish into a showstopper. Here are some of our favourite basic ingredients that every cook should have and how to use them. Capers Little in size but big on flavour, capers are salted, pickled flower buds commonly found in Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and North African cooking. They bring an aromatic and salty flavour, working particularly well when added to light chicken or fish dishes. They’re also great in salad dressings that need to be punchy but not fiery. Capers are essential for salsa verde, a gorgeous green sauce that livens up meat, fish and salads. You’ll need them to balance out the buttery sauce that’s served with a chicken piccata too. Their sharpness means they’re a staple ingredient in tartare sauce, the perfect accompaniment for British favourite fish and chips.

Chilli Flakes The dried seeds and flesh of chillies are an indispensable store cupboard item that can be used to infuse recipes with warmth and spice. How much you add depends on how much heat you can handle, but even a small pinch will give a potentially underwhelming dish the kick it needs. Gone are the days when chilli was just for savoury dishes. Now it’s as likely to be found in

chocolate, sprinkled on a sweet mousse, or dusted over cocktails or smoothies. Use it to perk up all the other flavours in pizza and pasta, lift coconut or cheesebased dishes, or add zing to salads and stir-fries. Gone are the days when chilli was just for savoury dishes. Now it’s as likely to be found in chocolate, sprinkled on a sweet mousse, or dusted over cocktails or smoothies. Use it to perk up all the other flavours in pizza and pasta, lift coconut or cheese-based dishes, or add zing to salads and stir-fries. Fresh herbs Don’t get us wrong, dried herbs are worth their place in your kitchen cupboard, but for extra lift and lightness, make use of fresh ones. A sprinkling during cooking, or used as a garnish, adds a whole lot of flavour

and is pleasing to the eye too. Besides, growing your own is also pretty simple with a little practice and you can often get the most common herb seeds in bigger supermarkets. Fresh herbs are the key to finishing many a dish. Basil is the backbone of pesto and essential in a tricolore salad, coriander is central to Mexican food and many Scandinavian-inspired dishes benefit from dill. Sage or parsley turns a nice butter sauce into an exquisite one and chives will add a finishing touch to many egg-based dishes. Both savoury meat and sweet fruit salads are transformed by a few sprigs of fresh mint. honey Honey has been added to sweet and savoury foods for centuries, used in cooking, baking and to garnish, and it

Miso Miso is a traditional Japanese seasoning made from fermented soybeans. There’s a range of styles but all are a rich source of umami, that essential fifth savoury taste. A little goes a long way – its yeasty and salty flavours add depth to sauces and marinades and it’s especially great for vegan dishes. Miso is an indispensable addition to soups, marinades, sauces and glazes – and, of course, Nobu’s famous black

cod with miso or miso aubergine – as it creates a fantastically complex base with mild, rich, salty or sweet flavour notes depending on the variety used. Surprisingly, it can also work wonders in desserts. Try adding to salted caramel to deepen the flavour. Soy Sauce Soy sauce, made from fermented soya beans, is commonly used in Asian cuisine but is now used more and more in Western dishes too. Different varieties vary in consistency (light soy sauce is thinner than dark) but all add umami and saltiness, enhancing and balancing glazes, marinades, dressings, sauces, stir-fries, broths and soups. As well as being used to incorporate umami savouriness into dishes, soy sauce balances salad dressings and vinaigrettes. Its natural saltiness lifts veg and cooked eggs, both of which can be bland without seasoning. Soy sauce can even be added to cakes, muffins and dough as an alternative to salt to balance sweetness. And sushi is obviously unimaginable without it.

At my parents’ house on a visit recently, my father asked me to fix something on his computer. While I was doing it, a message popped up from a woman. It became obvious to me that my father has been seeing this woman behind my mother’s back. Mum and Dad are both in their mid 70s and to my knowledge, my mother is not aware of this

‘friendship’. I made subtle enquiries and found out that my father has joined a book club, by himself, because my mother is not interested in going. My mother said he goes three times a week, which to me seems quite a lot for a book club. She doesn’t seem to be suspicious at all, but years ago my father had two affairs when my brother and I were in our teens, so I know he’s

capable of it. Back then, it all seemed to be out in the open and he flaunted the affairs in front of my mother, and even threatened to leave us all. I’d hoped it was all behind them after they moved to Spain. My mother is once again being made a fool of, and my brother and I both feel he should be confronted, but we don’t want to hurt my mother, as she had a breakdown last time something like this happened. You and your brother could speak to your father

alone and tell him you know about his relationship with this other woman. Then remind him that his mother has been hurt by him before, and had a nervous breakdown as a result. If he won’t give up this woman, tell him that your Mum deserves to know the truth and you are considering telling her yourselves; hopefully it may be enough for him to finish the relationship without incident.

Poor sleep quality can shorten your life A new study has found that sleeping badly can reduce your lifespan. But doing strenuous activity, including exercise such as running and going to the gym, may counter some of the adverse health effects. Researchers found that, compared to healthy sleepers, people with poor sleep had a 23 per cent higher risk of premature death, a 39 per cent higher risk of dying from heart disease, and a 13 per cent higher risk of dying from cancer. The data of people who slept well was then compared to those who slept poorly. Researchers discovered that, those who had the highest risk of dying from heart disease and cancer were those who had

poor sleep – but also didn’t meet the World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines. That is, at least 150 to 300 minutes a week of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity, or at least 75 to 150 minutes vigorous-intensity aerobic exercise. However, those who had poor sleep but did enough physical activity to meet recommended guidelines had less risk of dying from heart disease and cancer, compared to those who slept poorly and didn’t meet the physical activity guidelines. Those who exercised regularly were therefore able to counteract the negative health effects.

Avoiding the Safety Car effect During special operations, such as during the summer months, more traffic patrols can be seen on the road. However, sometimes the sight of these patrols can cause unnecessary delays, through a phenomenon known as the ‘Safety Car’ effect. Often, when drivers see a Guardia Civil or police patrol, they instinctively feel a reluctance to overtake, even though there may be two or more lanes,

the way is clear, and there is no obvious reason not to pass, some drivers feel a fear and automatically ease back. All too often, this is unnecessary. Of course, it is true that if you are caught breaking the law, speeding for example, then it would be natural to assume that a patrol would stop you and deal with the offence committed, but under normal driving conditions, if you are abiding by the law, there is no

reason for you to be stopped. As you go about your journey, you don´t know what the patrol is doing. Maybe they are intentionally driving below the speed limit, maybe they are making observations along the road, who knows what they are doing, and it´s none of our business. If you see a patrol ahead and they are driving normally (remember, traffic cars have blue lights illuminated all the time, so that is not an indicator of a problem), look at you and your own actions. Are you driving within the law, within the speed limit, allowing the correct distance, etc, in other words, do what you would do with a normal car. If it is safe, legal and convenient for you to overtake, then do so. Treat the patrol vehicle like you would any other. If the patrol does not want you to pass, they will signal you to stay back, by using flashing lights, a matrix sign, or flags. If there is not an emergency, you may pass, if it is safe, legal and convenient to do so. Safety cars are used on racetracks to slow down racers because of a problem ahead. The roads are not racetracks, there are no safety cars. If there is a problem, you will know about it. If everything looks normal, then it is.

In 2020 1,370 people died in traffic accidents During the past year, marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, 1,370 people lost their lives in traffic accidents (6,681 had to be hospitalised because of an accident), according to the balance of the General Directorate of Traffic. It is the lowest figure since records began and includes people who died on interurban and urban roads during the 30 days after the accident occurred. The decrease in the death toll occurred in a context of a reduction in long-distance trips, which stood at 25%, caused by the mobility restrictions imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, while the automotive fleet stood at 36,158,465 vehicles, 1% more than in 2019. The death rate stood at 29 deaths per million inhabitants, one of the lowest in the European Union in 2020, only behind Sweden (18), Malta (21) and Denmark (27). The average rate for the countries of the European Union was 42. In the European Union as a whole, the mortality rate per million inhabitants decreased by 17% between 2019 and 2020, while in Spain this reduction was 22%. The Road Safety Strategy 2011-2020 set the value of 37 as the maximum mortality rate in 2020, a value that was already reached in 2019. X-ray of the accident rate The number of deceased people decreased by 22% compared to 2019, although the reduction has been somewhat higher in cities (-24%) than on the road (-21%). On urban roads, there were 395 deaths, while on interurban roads, the number of people

killed was below 1,000 victims for the first time, with 975, which represents a reduction of 21% compared to 2019. Furthermore, in Interurban roads, there is a greater decrease in deaths on highways and motorways (-35%) than on conventional roads (-16%). For the fifth consecutive year, distractions were the most frequent factor in fatal accidents (they were present in 31% of them), followed by alcohol consumption (present in 27%) and speed (present in 25%). Distraction shows an increase of 3 points compared to 2019, while alcohol and speed show an increase of 2 points. If we take into account the mode of travel, the largest declines in accidents occurred among van users (54 deaths in 2020, compared to 80 in 2019), pedestrians (260 deaths in 2020, compared to 381 in 2019, 32% less) and motorcyclists (345 deaths, including mopeds, 26% less than in 2019), although the decrease in pedestrians was concentrated on urban roads (-38%) and motorcyclists on interurban roads (-34%). Among those that had a smaller decrease in their accident figures, the following stand out: the reduction from 80 to 71 cyclist deaths, the reduction of 15% in the number of deaths in passenger cars and the reduction of users of trucks weighing more than 3,500 kg (from 55 died in 2019 to 45 in 2020). Overall, the vulnerable users who died (pedestrians, cyclists, users of personal mobility vehicles and motorcyclists) were reduced by 26% and account for 50% of the people who

died.

differences depending on the type of road As previously indicated, on interurban roads there has been a 35% reduction in fatalities in the case of highways and motorways, compared to the lower reduction in conventional roads (-16%). The most frequent fatal accidents on interurban roads continue to be exits (42% of people killed) and head-on collisions (20%). On interurban roads, the only means of transport in which there was an increase in the number of deaths was on bicycles (+2 deaths). The accident rate for motorcyclists (-34%), which accounted for 1 in 5 people deceased (compared to 1 in 4 in 2019), and van users (-24 deceased) decreased notably. Those who reduced their accident rate the least were the occupants of passenger cars (-17%) and trucks weighing more than 3,500 kg (-9 deaths). In the case of urban roads, the concern is focused on vulnerable users, since, despite the 26% decrease compared to 2019, they accounted for 80% of the deaths, distributed as follows: 153 pedestrians, 21 cyclists, 7 users of personal mobility vehicles and 134 motorcyclists (including mopeds). The increases in the number of deaths occurred in passenger cars (+2 deaths) and in trucks up to 3,500 kg (+1 deceased). It is also worth highlighting the small decrease in the number of motorcyclist deaths (-9%), compared to the decrease experienced in interurban roads (-34%),

although the behaviour of motorcyclists and mopeds was different on urban roads: greater decrease in road users. deceased mopeds (from 22 to 13), compared to motorcycle users (from 126 to 121 in 2020, a reduction of 4%). Pedestrians who died experienced the largest decrease, 38%. It should be noted that 65% of the pedestrians who died were 65 years of age or older, highlighting the decline from 75 years of age, a population that has gone from 134 deaths in 2019 to 72 in 2020. other aspects to highlight In all the months of 2020, with the exception of September, there were fewer deaths than in 2019. The greatest reductions: in April (-65%), May (-49%) and March (-43%). The greatest decreases occurred in the periods with the greatest mobility restrictions. Thus, between March 14 (beginning of the first state of alarm) and May 3, the decrease was 72%; between May 4 (beginning of the Plan for the Transition to a New Normal) and June 30, -37%. All age groups register decreases in the number of deaths with respect to 2019. It is worth noting the reductions that have occurred in the age groups between 0 and 14 years (from 32 deaths

in 2019 to 17 in 2020), 45 and 54 years (-28%) and those over 65 years or more (-26%). Deceased women were reduced by 28% compared to 2019, compared to a decrease of 20% in men. In all the communities the number of deaths was reduced, except for Aragon (+5), Castilla-La Mancha (+3) and Ceuta and Melilla (+1). The greatest reductions were registered in the Basque Country (from 65 in 2019 to 42 in 2020), ComunidadForal de Navarra (from 31 to 20), Comunidad de Madrid (-34%), Cataluña (-33%), and Canarias (de 74 to 50). The general director of traffic Pere Navarro has indicated that “these figures are a consequence of the exceptional situation experienced in 2020; now, our efforts must be aimed at preventing a return to the old normality in terms of road accidents”. Together with the consolidated data on fatal accidents, in 2020 there were a total of 72,959 traffic accidents with victims in Spain, in which, in addition to the 1,370 people who lost their lives, 94,562 were injured, of which 6,681 required hospital admission. The consolidated figures will be published in the statistical yearbooks of the General Directorate of Traffic.

Max Verstappen wins home Grand Prix Red Bull’s Max Verstappen took a dominant victory over Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton in the Dutch Grand Prix to retake the championship lead. Verstappen, cheered on by 65,000 enthusiastic home fans, led all the way from pole position, comfortably keeping a following Hamilton at bay. The Dutchman leads Hamilton by three points after his seventh win in 2021. Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas was third, ahead of Alpha Tauri’s Pierre Gasly and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. Mercedes tried what they could to challenge Verstappen, putting Hamilton on a two-stop strategy, then trying to use Bottas to hold him up, but Red Bull always appeared to be in control. There appeared to be some disagreements between Hamilton and the team on the strategy deployed, but their conversations were a function of the fact that Verstappen just had that bit of extra pace to be able to answer

Collins Continental Cup 1st September at Font Del Llop It was a fantastic day for our first competition of the new Spanish golf season which was sponsored by Danny and Sharon Collins from England, Danny, Sharon and their son Liam actually made it over this year so was this going to be the third time that Liam could win the family trophy, the answer is a simple yes with another remarkable score of 47 points but down on his previous record of 54 points. The day started with the traditional full English breakfast in Imanyo’s, twenty-four players took part and the format was full handicap Stableford playing in two groups with an overall winner. On arrival at Font Del Llopwe received the usual friendly greeting with everything ready and waiting the course was OK but it was the tinning of the greens that let it down. The weather was cloud cover and very humid and a temperature of 32 degrees.

everything Mercedes threw at him. “They were just too fast today,” Hamilton said over the radio on the slowing down lap. After leading from the start, Verstappen was 3.5 seconds ahead of Hamilton when Mercedes pulled the seven-time champion in for a pit stop on lap 20, too early for the predicted one-stop race. Red Bull responded a lap later with Verstappen, but Mercedes left Bottas out and the Finn took the lead. As Verstappen and Hamilton closed in, the Finn was told he had to defend if he wanted to try to win the race. But as soon as Verstappen caught him, Bottas went in too deep at the chicane, allowing the Red Bull to close right in and sweep past down the pit straight. That was Bottas’ hopes finished, and Hamilton’s were effectively the same, even if the Briton continued to try to put up a fight.

In both groups this year all first three players had high handicapping cutting scores. The winner came from group A this year with Liam Collins again with a handicap cutting 47 points, runner up was “He’s on Fire” Steve Burns with 42 points and third place went to “Mr Twelve Trees“Steve Ayre with 41 points, group B winner was “Tricky” Rik Wood with 43 points, runner up was Derry Quinlan with 40 points and third place on count back beating Danny Collins was “Our Professional” Miguel Garcia with 39 points. There were six nearest the pins and a longest drive, hole 3 was “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly, hole7 “Three Clubs” Sean McGuinness, hole 8 “The Joker” Mick Billins, holes 12 and 16 was

Best Front 9 was “Three Clubs” Sean McGuinness, best back 9 was Liam Collins and to top it all for a great day out Liam Collins won the twos pot of €37.00. The presentation was held at Imanyo’s. Well, as we always say at this point in the season, there’s nothing like an international break to kill a bit of momentum.

felt wanted. Unfortunately for him, Everton didn’t come up with the required readies because they can’t really spend much more until they rid themselves of a certain James Rodriguez. And that means that AMN is stuck at the Emirates having burnt what little bridge was actually left.

As the burning embers of the transfer window start to dampen down, this is a fine opportunity to have a little look back at a couple of the eye-browsing moments of the summer and laugh at the fact that the transfer rumour mill is already underway for January. Yes, already. Did you enjoy the break?

Yes, Ronaldo will be wearing number 7 for United this season and if you have a spare two-and-ahalf grand kicking about you could probably get a ticket for his second debut. The secondary ticket market, or to be more exact, online touts, have managed to clean up the seats available and are charging a literal arm-and-a-leg to pass them on. Cristiano’s second debut kicking off at 3pm in the UK next Saturday has also sparked the debate around how it is possible for everyone outside England to be able to watch the match live (legally, we should add) yet those poor United fans in London can’t. Sad times indeed. Ainsley Maitland-Niles wins this season’s award for ‘Failed attempt at leaving a club’ following his social media plea to go to a club where he

Abbey Anglers On Tuesday the 31st of August we fished an open match at El Bosquet. Seventeen anglers took part and we fished pegs a1 to 7, 17 to 23 and 26 to 40. Winner on the day taking advantage of favoured peg 26 was Bill Reade. Bill fished bread about a foot deep to take several quality carp for 34.900kg. In second place was Graham Patterson on peg 2. Graham initially caught a few fish shallow on maggot and then switched to the method feeder on the pole and caught mainly

The B team needed a little help from a couple of A team lads to repeat the Hungary scoreline. Andorra will take that, I am sure. It was nice to see Jesse Lingard get a game of football and the big smile of Patrick Bamford, given a debut because, you know, why not? And what else is going on on the Premier League planet which feels more and more removed from reality? Liverpool’s Mo Salah really wants to stat Anfield - providing they whack his weekly pay up to a mere £500k that is.

We should also give a cursory glance at the international fixtures that took place too - but you can probably skip that bit. Remember last week when I said that CR7 was dead and it could well be CR77, CR70, CR61 or something equally daft? It turns out that if your name is Cristiano Ronaldo, special Premier League dispensation can happen - especially when you persuade Man United to flog their number 21 to Leeds meaning Edinson Cavani can seamlessly slip into his Uruguay squad number.

much kill off the group before sending their B team out to battle against, and I am contractually obliged to call them, plucky little Andorra.

Aston Villa didn’t believe for a second that Mr McKennie wanted to go to Turf Moor and be growled at by Sean Dyche - so they’d like to sign the USA midfielder instead. That said, you’d have to think he’d be a better option at right-back than Cedric, no? Not that it matters, given the Arsenal have signed Tommy Yashu - who once upon a time you’d have thought they’d picked up locally. For me, the winner of the ‘I think Sky are just making this up to fill some time’ award on Deadline Day was the suggestion that Burnley had been offered Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie and (a) Burnley were tempted to spend £30m+ and (b) Weston McKennie fancied swapping Turin for a bit of Lancashire. Stranger things have certainly not happened.

Romelu Lukaku has opened up on his gratitude to Inter Milan for digging him out of a deep Manchester United sized hole and saving his career and that he would only have ever left them for Chelsea, even with the impending financial doom Inter seem to be facing. Having secured a few other key men on long-term well-paid new

deals, Man City want to tie up Phil Foden by multiplying his current wages by four. Yep, by four. Adama Traore was so delighted that Wolves shut down any chance of him leaving Molineux last week that he is in talks for a new deal. My advice to Wolves would be to pay him 10K per week and a 250K goal bonus, meaning they only have to pay him well, you get the gist. Arsene Wenger, remember him, reckons that the Premier League’s economic power means that Erling Haaland will be heading to Blighty next summer. Clearly, Arsene understands how broke Real Madrid and Barcelona are - oh. Peppy G does win the ‘we didn’t want him anyway’ award of the transfer window as it transpired, if you believe this kind of thing, that City turned down the chance to sign Saul on deadline day meaning that the Spaniard ended up at Stamford Bridge instead. OK, Pep. And Rafa Benitez is looking to endear himself to Everton fans and players further by suggesting that his squad should spend less time mucking about online gaming and more time gardening. This is ironic, really, given that the player this applies to most (J-Rod) is pretty much on gardening leave…

Harry Kane also took to social media to very openly put the last few weeks behind him, take another pop at Daniel Levy and basically tell the fans they wouldn’t understand anyway. Still, he’s one of their own. It would be lovely to think Jack Grealish, who didn’t exactly endear himself to Villa fans in the week either, has spent the entire international break singing Blue Moon in and around his England skipper. England beat Hungary 4-0 to pretty

carp for 31.150kg. In third place was the ever consistent Neil McBernie with 29.425kg. Drawn on peg 37 he fished maggot across on the pole. The pairs event was won by Graham and Steve Higgins with 42.150kg. Rods n Reels. The following day we fished the first match of what is laughingly called the winter series at the Rio Segura in Murcia town centre. The match was fished in overcast and slightly wet conditions and this

did effect some of the fishing. Barry Smith on another plundering mission from the Granada area took advantage of a good draw on peg 25 next to the crystal bridge. He fished the method feeder for 12.80kg. In second place was Richard Tricky Wood with 12.20kg and I was 3rd with 10.80kg. We did not have a pairs event but a triples instead to accomodate the 9 anglers and this was won by Myself , Richard and fellow over the border plunderer Neil Bomford. open Match at Argos.

Straight after the Murcia match we drove upto Argos and spent a night in The hotel Argos. The hotel has really improved since our last visit and now has a full complement of staff and the food was excellent. The match itself was fished entirely on the warm side, this I had pegged the night before but upon our arrival we found that all the pegs had been stolen, at least they left the notice board this time. The match was again fished in overcast conditions with a few periods of light rain.

Winner on the day was myself, Ian Brown. I was drawn on peg 8 and after 4 hours I had to deploy a second net having 22kg of carp and barbel in the first one. These I caught all on the slow sinking feeder with 6mm pellet. The last couple of hours i only caught 4 fish and finished up with 26.600kg. In second place was Barry Smith with 26.025kg again on the slow sinking feeder and in third place was his fellow Viking , Neil Bomford who again fished the slow sinker for 22.100kg. The pairs event was won by Barry and Keith´´I forgot my licence´´Hirst. One unusual moment was when Terry Screen snapped his pole on the 5th section. Not a worry you would think with his repair skills but a little difficult when it had a fish attached that swam off with the 5 sections into the deep. Further deatils of all our matches and lots of info can be found on our website at www.abbeyangling.es

The 700 year role that orihuela played in the Vega Baja By David Hudson – Part 3 orihuela and the Vega Baja Continued... The Arabs introduced ceramics principally in Albatera, San Isidro and Catral. Rope shoes, rope and basket making from reeds and grasses are made in Callosa and Redovan. The reeds are grown around Redovan and these were also used for roofs in the campo. An example of these reed covered houses can be seen on a roundabout in Orihuela a few yards from the Glorieta and opposite Lidl. Orihuela and San Miguel are the centre for Carpets and Tapestry that supply convents and churches. Shops provide outfits for communion, baptism, brides and religious wear. Folklore music is very important part of the culture in this area especially Auroras (the sunrise) of Callosa, Catral, Bigastro and the Habaneros in Torrevieja.

My friend was in the International Brigade in the Spanish Civil War and he said that the Spanish were always singing even in the trenches. The music can be an orchestra, a band, a choir with or without impromptu instruments. It’s worth seeking them out as it always is an experience. The local Fiestas are passionate and enjoyable and around our house we have firework displays almost every day to celebrate someone’s fiesta. Many municipals celebrate “Romeras” and use their Ermitas and they have music, traditional meals and local foods. There are 33 Ermitas in the Vega Baja and if you are interested in visiting them there is a good book about them with information and how to get to them and where to have a meal. One Ermita not mentioned that you must visit is the white Ermita Sanctuary of Pilar high on the mountain above Benejuzar. At the top is a spectacular view of the Vega Baja Valley. The impressive church hides a treasure inside that stops you in your track. On the way up to the church there are picnic areas. You will need to arrange to see inside the church. A picnic trip to take on a clear Sunday that takes in the mountain ranges and ends with a spectacular view of the Vega Baja Valley starts on the San Miguel to Orihuela road. At the first roundabout at Bigastro turn right to Jacarilla and as you enter visit the Palace and Gardens. Return to Bigastro roundabout and continue to Orihuela. At the second roundabout turn left to Hurchillo. Go through the village taking the road to Arneva then turn left under the huge silver pipes that carry the Rio Taco water bursting out of the mountain. Follow the pipes dog legging at the Garden Centre. At the roundabout the road crossing in front of you is the road that “El Cid” marched on his way to conquer Murcia. When the pipes plunged into the mountain turn right and through Bonanza village and the tunnel. Immediately turn right onto the picnic area. On your left are the mountains of Redovan and Callosa and your right are the Hurchillo mountains.

Before you stretching into the distance is the Vega Baja valley with the sea 40kms away. In front of you is the rear of Orihuela Castle. To return why not continue to the flyover and turn right to the roundabout then left onto the old Redovan road that “El Cid” matched. Call into Redovan then continue to Callosa then right to Almoradi and home. To get to the castle you take the calle Colon and climb the stations of the cross road to the Seminario. If using the car leave in the car park and continue round the back of the Seminario and keep climbing the mountain bearing right. Eventually you get to the impressive entrance to the castle recently restored by the friends of the castle. Food of the area I found that the best food in Valencia Region is south of Alicante and the nearer you get to Orihuela the better the food is especially sweet things and stews which may be the influence of the Arabs. Catral Romera is on the day of Santa Agueda with “Bolas of Santa Agueda” bags of turron and carmelos. Benejuzar has a famous Romera of the Virgen del Pilar with singing Aragon songs and music dating back to when Orihuela was part of Aragon. In Rojales, Bigastro, Cox and Orihuela they celebrate Romera day of San Isidro accompanied by country meals. These local Fiestas sometimes have exhibitions so it’s worth a look. Mediaeval Fairs are also worth a visit because they give an insight of the crafts and culture of centuries past. We must not forget Semana Santa Fiesta (Easter Holy week) which is rich in history especially Orihuela and Callosa. Spain was 700 years under Muslim rule before being returned to Christianity and today it is expected for Christians to publicly declare their faith against the persecution of Christians through the ages that makes this a passionate Festival.

The food on the costa is predominately fish and sea food with rice but further in to the countryside meat is included. Besides a Vega Baja country Paella other rice dishes to try are Arroz con costra, Arroz con conejo (rabbit), Estafado (jummy yellow stew), and delicious huge Pelotas, Arroz de banda and Soups. The sweet treats include Dulce de San Jose with bunuelos, pastelos de gloria and Arab sweets plus turron at Christmas. As a treat visit the Arab tea house near Albatera which is in the middle of the countryside where you can lounge on cushions and be served with sweet tea and very sweet treats under the midnight sky bursting with stars. If you have the opportunity

to have a home made menu del dia of salad, estafado and abuela postre then it’s a must. I would recommend Restaurant Ruiz in Orihuela (N340) for their estafado followed by Abuelos postre (grandmother´s pudding) washed down with a carafe of red wine. I have only touched the surface on what the Vega Baja is. Every Town and Village has a history and a culture but I picked what I think makes the story of the role Vega Baja played during the 900 years. Why not get in your car and experience the real Spain. Unlike fifteen years ago the towns are now more helpful with tourists and you can get information on the local area easily. Despite being one of the poorer

parts of the Valencia Region over the centuries Orihuela City has continuously developed the Vega Baja area; clearing the swamp areas, irrigation, creating towns and villages and improving the countryside. To help with maintaining the dependent villages and the history the city recently developed the Orihuela Costa by provided golf courses and holiday homes with blue flag beaches for foreigners. In return the foreigners gave the necessary funds needed. When permanent residents arrived on the Orihuela Costa the city again responded by attracting national shops and created a shopping centre with a purpose built town hall geared to the foreigner. This thumb nail account of Orihuela’s role in the history of this area is in recognition of this.
