DANA: Two years later and no solutions

major structural works announced to fix the damage caused by the terrible flooding of September 2019 are still ‘projects’, most of which are still under review. promises to dig out the rambla de Abanilla, improve capacity of the

riverbed of the Segura, the creation of rolling reservoirs, hydraulic corridors and more are projects much lauded over the last two years since the Vega baja was devastated by the September 2019 dAnA.

two years have passed since biblical levels of rain fell on the southern Costa blanca – 2800 cubic hectometres of rain fell on the Segura basin; triple what the reservoir is capable of holding. that, coupled with the breaking of the banks

of the river in Almoradí and overall bad planning caused the greatest catastrophe the Vega baja has seen for 140 years. As the two year anniversary was marked this weekend, many took the opportunity to highlight the lack

of action to repair damage done. the economic cost of the tragedy is estimated to be in the region of 3000 million euro. thousands of families were left without shelter as their homes were destroyed and two years on, little or no structural work necessary for the prevention of another dAnA of 2019 proportions has begun. obtaining finance for works of such magnitude is not easy but many claim that to date most of the structural works necessary don’t even have a study done. As the Covid pandemic broke out here just six months after the dAnA, there was of course an additional delay to the arrival of funds and it is hoped that most of the major works will be financed with eU funds. the Valencian Government

Alan of Quesada asks “The WiFi in my house does not reach everywhere I need it. What can I do? if you have trouble getting WiFi signal in some corners of your property. What should you try first? A general rule of thumb in home networking says that WiFi routers can reach up to 46 metres indoors and 92 metres outdoors. the simplest is to try moving the location of your WiFi router. it should be in the most central location possible. if this is not possible consider the following. Options Range

to

increase Wi-Fi

1. Add another router – run a network cable to another WiFi router. 2. Use a WiFi repeater - connects to your network wirelessly and rebroadcasts your existing network signal. each repeater needs to be in WiFi range of a WiFi source. 3. Use a Wifi extender - A WiFi extender connects directly to your router and creates a new WiFi network. 4. Use a powerline Adapter - Like a WiFi booster, a powerline adapter is directly connected to a router via an ethernet cable. the adapter is then plugged into a power socket, allowing network data to travel via the electrical system into a receiving adapter in another location. Martin of La Marinaasks “I have a UK laptop. How do I type a Euro symbol?” if you are using a UK keyboard for Spanish or a Spanish keyboard for english not all characters are available to you by using the keyboard. each key and its various options are recognised as separate “codes” by the computer. each of these characters, and a lot more, are available using Alt Codes

on personal computers with numeric keypad that do not have a dedicated key combination on the keyboard may be entered using the Alt code the (Alt numpad input method). this is done by pressing and holding the Alt key, then typing a number on the keyboard’s numeric keypad that identifies the character and then releasing Alt. How to use Alt Codes for Special Characters, and Symbols • Make sure that you switch on the number Lock on your keyboard. • Hold down the ALT key (left alt key). • Type the alt code (you should use the numbers on the keypad, not the ones on top row) for the special character or symbol you want to get and release the ALt key. Google search will give you the Alt Code for the symbol you require. examples of Alt Codes are: £ = Alt 156 € = Alt 0128 ¿ = Alt 0191 to use alt codes on Apple mac computers, use the option key instead of the Alt key.

AUTOMÓVILES CRESPO THE BIGGEST AND BEST FOR PRICE CHOICE AND QUALITY Continued from page 1 already poured €90m into aid after the dAnA, including direct aid for basic goods and necessities, repairs to schools and health centres, fixing both main and agricultural roadways and funding to town halls to compensate for extraordinary expenses. the ChS water management authority has also spent over €20m since the dAnA, mainly on emergency repairs and the reconstruction and reinforcement of the river bank that gave way in Almoradí. it also plans to spend another €5m over the next three years. however, despite funds spent on aid and repairs, the region

continues to demand long term solutions. the mayor of orihuela, emilio bascuñana said at the weekend, “two years have passed and we still have no solutions, everything remains the same.” he said that the Vega baja is fearful of heavy rains, saying, “orihuela urgently needs that works be undertaken, immediately, that the competent administrations take action. once and for all, hydraulic infrastructure work must be carried out to prevent the tragedy from repeating itself. Unfortunately, the aid promised by the Consell and the central government has yet to arrive. We remain without

You have to move on to act.” “do you know of any municipality in this country that has been able to overcome without help such a misfortune and so many losses? i guarantee you that i don’t. not in Spain, not anywhere”

RBL charity cycle ride from Wiltshire to Campoverde Jonathan Knight served as a master tailor for over 24 years. on leaving the military he remained in the trade and opened a business in the Wiltshire Garrison town of tidworth. Jonathan has always been appalled by the amount of physical and mental illness that he sees both amongst those who have left the services and those who are still serving, in the many units and garrisons that he continues to visit. in recent years, as a former soldier he has supported many charities, both financially and in arranging fund-raising efforts himself, and now, in its centenary year, his energies have turned to the royal british Legion. Jonathan said: “the Legion has always been there to support the military and families and i can think of no better charity to support at this time.” Jonathan is embarking on ten days of pure physical exertion as he attempts to make a journey of 1,300 miles from tidworth to Campoverde using only pedal power. Jonathan’s journey will begin in the Wiltshire town where an official ‘send off’ is planned by the mayor and the Chairman of the local branch of the royal british Legion. he

will then ride to portsmouth before taking the overnight ferry to Caen where he will be met by his continental support team, in the form of brother mark, who will be driving a campervan. next stop will be the british and Commonwealth War cemetery in normandy, where the pair will lay a wreath, after which the gruelling journey down through France and Spain in legs of approximately 140 miles per day. brother mark said that the campervan, supplied at only a minimal cost by Furgo Casa Campervans in murcia, will be an absolute godsend, as it will allow the pair to relax in campsites in relative comfort. on the penultimate day the overnight stop will be at Castalla international in Alicante where the pair will meet up with members of the Alicante branch of the rbL as they lay another wreath at the branch’s newly dedicated memorial. on the following day the ride will culminate at danny’s bar and Grill in pinar de Campoverde,

where Jonathan and mark will be met by members of the orihuela Costa and district branch of the rbL at an event to help celebrate the ride, and to hopefully raise more money for veterans and their families. donations can be made through GoFundme – search for ‘bike ride to Spain’ or visit: https://gofund.me/67af35ab where Jonathan has set himself a modest total of £2,000 which he hopes he can achieve, or even beat. All costs of the ride, including the hire of the campervan and overnight site fees, are being met by Jonathan himself, so all monies raised will be split equally between the three branches concerned, in tidworth, Alicante and orihuela Costa.

once you’ve decided to buy a home on the Costa blanca, you’re sure to be scrambling around gathering as much advice and information as possible. After all, there’s nothing better than being prepared! Friends and family can get carried away in offering you their own views about owning a home in Spain. it’s funny how everyone seems to have an opinion when it comes to the subject of property, however more often than not, with all the goodwill in the world, they’re not the experts they think they are. here are some of the myths you may hear relating to purchasing a property on the Costa blanca right now, that you really shouldn’t believe: THE MYTH: “DON’T BUY YET, HOUSE PRICES ARE GOING DOWN!” THE REALITY: the climate here will always be the biggest attraction. there will always be international buyers wanting to relocate here or buy holiday homes. We are not in a recession, so expecting prices to go down is perhaps, wishful

thinking. THE MYTH: “MAKE A CHEEKY OFFER!” THE REALITY: making an extremely low offer can start negotiations off on the wrong foot with the seller. Like it or not, in many cases it is very difficult for the seller to detach their emotions from the selling process. You want the best deal you can get, but you don’t want to halt negotiations before they even get started. be reasonable with your offer. Serious buyers and sellers know what homes are worth. THE MYTH: “NEVER PAY FULL PRICE!” THE REALITY: Full price doesn’t always mean overpriced! however if that perfect home seems a little more than the going rate, and if it has everything you’ve been looking for, then paying full price may be the only way to secure it. What your friends and family may never tell you is in a low inventory market, prices can only go one way… and that is up! the more homes for sale means prices will remain stable. the fewer homes for sale means prices will start to increase.

Has your UK Adviser abandoned you? brexit red-tape and complications have forced financial advisory businesses to abandon UK expats living across europe.

laws and regulations in each eU nation in which they operate are able to give financial advice to people resident in those countries.

many UK banks and advice companies are now unable or unwilling to work with british nationals who live in the eU, as industry rules have changed following the UK’s exit from the european Union.

this has meant that many UK-based advisory firms have been forced to ditch their expat clients as they are not now legally compliant to give advice in european economic Area countries.

pre-brexit, UK-based financial advisers were legally allowed to advise expat clients in europe through a system known as ‘passporting.’ but since the UK’s exit, those legal rights for UK-based companies have been revoked.

new brexit-triggered rules for UK banks and financial advisory firms have left many british expats across europe feeling worried.

Residents urged to take control of the coast this week the Costa blanca people spoke to peter houghton from partido independencia orihuela Costa (pioC). peter said: “the residents of orihuela Costa have suffered from an appalling lack of services by the previous councils for far too long compared to all other local towns. this cannot be blamed on population size as the Costa has a population far greater and, in a few years, will be twice the size of old orihuela and less than many of the villages that have full control of their own administrative affairs. “it is difficult to see how a city at 34 kilometres distance, separated by countryside and several independent towns can lay administrative claims on the coastal area. Surely a district with a population acceding well over 33,000 is of sufficient size to have its own municipal council and elect councillors to that council who actually live in the area and can truly represent the residents of the area they live in and have its own mayor and a town hall befitting a district of our size. “it’s amazing that towns and villages of much smaller size have control of their

administrative affairs. Just a few kilometres for orihuela Costa, the town of pilar de la horadada with a population of an estimated 22,347 gained independence from the strangle hold of orihuela in 1986. Since that time this town has thrived

and the amenities available to the residents have really grown over the last few years. money raised from the area is actually spent on the residents contributing to municipal income. there is no comparison between the public amenities in pilar de la horadada and orihuela Costa, the former is well resourced thriving area, the later is a cash cow for the benefit of the well subsidised inhabitants of a location 30 kilometres away. “San miguel de Salinas, with an estimated population of 8,000 and Los montesinos a

population estimated at 5,500 are both self-governing and self-determining independent administrative areas. it is only the residents of orihuela Costa who can empower themselves to provide the development and advancement of their own locality otherwise they will continue to receive the scraps off the orihuela table. independence for orihuela Costa is the only real way forward. this is the only way that will ensure that services and amenities appropriate to the size of the population are provided. “For too long the Costa has been marginalised, neglected and raided for the benefit of orihuela. it is now time that the residents gain the services that they have been desperately waiting for. to this end the coast must have appropriate number of councillors from the area. With present population statistics a minimum of 9 councillors should actually be serving on the orihuela Council from the coastal region,in the last election out of a possible 7,000 registered voters only just over 2,000 turned out, we have just under 2 years to work and prepare for the next elections.”

Why Chorus Financial are different By Tracy Storer Senior Partner Chorus Financial Whether you are reading the local newspapers, browsing social media or google, or tuning into the local radio stations, there are certainly no shortage of Financial Advisers, but how do you know which one to choose? As many of you will likely know, Chorus are certainly not Spain’s longest established firm, in fact, far from it. Chorus was set-up very deliberately as an alternative to those firms. We entered an industry that we felt had little care for client outcomes and was purely focussed on how much in fees, hidden or otherwise, could be extracted from brits living in Spain. From our point of view, the very foundations of good quality advice – transparency and suitability – were about the last thing many of the established firms

in Spain cared about. Chorus began life with a clear goal; to offer the best service, the highest quality financial solutions, and all of that had to be coupled with transparent, fair fees, that were fully justifiable. to do this, however, we really had to explain to the public how the industry works. regulation isn’t all that strict in Spain, and that can mean people are tied into products with high, often hidden fees, and in many cases, inappropriate or low-qualityunderlying investments. We felt our first job was to properly explain how fees and commissions work, how common products like Sipps, Qrops, Spanish Compliant bonds can be of benefit in some cases, and not

in others. We have now been doing this for many years, we’ve won major international awards for our efforts, and i believe that along the way we have educated many 100,000s of brits in Spain. So why are Chorus different? Well, myself and theChorus team have been lucky in that we have been able to keep full control of Chorus and to always work to those initial goals we set. Although we operate under a major european financial services network, Aisa international, Aisa also share our aims and goals and have always fully supported, and indeed encouraged, our transparent, client-focussed approach. Unlike many in the industry, our business model is focussed on developing long

term relationships with our clients, rather than obtaining high up-front commissions or fees. over the years this has allowed us to grow a large, happy, and loyal client base, giving us as a company incredible long-term security whilst allowing us to fulfil our client’s goals and desired outcomes. Whilst we might not be the largest, or indeed the longest established firm out there, we would like to think that our approach makes usthe best, and hopefully ourever growing list of happy clients would agree! if you would like to discuss your investment or pension requirements, please give me a call on 693 107 044 or email t.storer@chorusfinancial.es

Investment contracts are intended as medium to long term investments, and all investments have some level of risk. Figures in our articles are examples of what can be achieved and cannot be guaranteed; the value of your investments can go down as well as up. Fees and charges can vary and will be fully explained to you before any advice can take place. GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP the pound ended the week higher against a basket of major currencies, despite arriving on the back foot, yet again weakened by brexit and pandemic-related woes. Fears surrounding the UK jobs market as the furlough scheme nears its end, as well as worker shortages in key industries, bottlenecks in global shipping and a subsequent supply chain crisis all played their part. the building industry reported lingering construction delays amid soaring supply costs, and UK new car sales fell by a huge 22%, cementing concerns that the government’s ‘build back better’ ambitions are under threat. the Confederation of british industry director general tony danker called on the UK government to take drastic action, to “deploy temporary and targeted interventions” such as fast tracked foreign visas to fill skills shortages, as failing to do so would be “self-defeating”. however, the pound’s greatest losses came after pm boris Johnson’s tax hike announcement. the decision to increase national insurance by 1.25% sparked backlash. Sterling dropped 0.5% against the USd and 0.2% against the eUr, though on thursday, experienced a shortlived rally following bank of england Governor Andrew bailey’s revelation that an interest rate hike could be coming in the first half of 2022. the monetary policy Committee will likely want to see an end to quantitative easing in december before raising rates, but four of eight members now believe that minimum conditions for a rate rise have been met. disappointing UK Gdp came yesterday as economic growth slowed to just 0.1% in July, leaving the UK still 2.1% below

its pre-coronavirus pandemic level of February 2020. EURO the eurozone enjoyed some positive data. european shares climbed to near record highs, spurred by technology stocks which surged to their highest levels this year thanks to the rise in German factory orders. Fears surrounding its ability to fulfil the orders were also eased with the news that German factory output bounced back in July with a 1% rise after three consecutive monthly drops. the organization for economic Cooperation and development (oeCd) released an optimistic economic Survey of italy. here it predicts the italian economy will grow by 5.9% in 2021, and return to its pre-Covid levels by the first half of 2022. Wednesday’s Gdp data release showed eurozone Gdp up 2.2% on the quarter and 14.3% year-on-year – both up on predictions. Gdp levels still have some catching up to do on prepandemic levels, however, as they currently sit 2.5% below their pre-Covid highs. employment in the bloc also rose 0.7% quarter-on-quarter and 1.8% year-on-year. the main event of the week, however, was the eCb monetary policy meeting. As expected, the eCb kept interest rates unchanged and decided to begin reducing their pandemic emergency purchase program (pepp). eCb president Christine Lagarde emphasised that the decision to slow the pace of bond-buying was not ‘tapering’, and that while a eurozone economic rebound could be achieved with less monetary help, they are not out of the woods just yet. the euro dropped to a three-week low in response.

Christmas lottery tickets go on sale tickets for el Gordo, the famous and very generous Spanish Christmas lottery, are now on sale...yes really! Although several lotteries, national and continental, take place daily and weekly in Spain, the most famous and eagerlyawaited of all is the el Gordo (the fat one) draw, held without fail on december 22, even when this is a Sunday. many like to buy a full ticket to up their odds, at a cost of €200, or even a décimo or tenth of a ticket – the usual method – at €20, in the run-up to the festive season. however, most average earners try to spend as little as possible on absolutely everything in the month of december, given how Christmas tends to clear them out. So, to that end, el Gordo tickets start being sold in summer – which is also a chance to get the number combination you want, if you have a specific one in mind – even though the hype and tV advertising does not start until well after the first few chocolates are eaten from the Advent calendar. one of the reasons that the el Gordo is so popular is that, although the prizes are much smaller than, for example, the

euromillions (a winning décimo gets you €400,000, then you have to pay tax on everything over the first €10,000 at a rate of 20 percent), there are many more of them, and shared between an absolute maximum of 47.1 million people. that’s the population of Spain, but assuming not everyone with children under 18 buys one for their kids as well as themselves, and even taking into account foreign tourists who have heard about it and decided to take part, the odds are actually much higher. Still not terribly high, but better than the estimated one in 114 million chance of hitting a

huge jackpot in the much bigger lotteries in Spain and europe. the 2020 jackpot number was 72.897, and very widely spread across the country. the lottery sale point in madrid founded 113 years ago by a lady known universally as doña manolita has sold a topfive prize every year without fail. this week, reporters in madrid have revealed that to get a ticket from doña manolita’s, customers are already having to queue. Long strings of people are being spotted throughout the day, stretching along the street and round the corner, says a leading news agency.

Temperatures well into Mediterranean Day the 30s this week Summer is far from over in Spain in meteorological terms – it officially ends on the autumn equinox on 21st September – and the temperatures forecast for this week confirm this. in many areas of the country, the second week in September will be at least as hot as July or August. the weather office revealed yesterday saw figures of over 30ºC in much of the country, and above 35ºC in several parts. in fact, the Andalucía provinces of Almería, Córdoba, Jaén and Sevilla – only the first of these being on the coast – and the two basque provinces with a sea, Guipúzcoa (the capital of which is San Sebastián) and Vizcaya (of which bilbao is the capital) were under ‘weather warnings’ for the heat. the rise in the mercury, which is across the board for Spain in the next two or three days, will be sharpest on the northern coastal strip of the mainland – mostly because this part of the country tends to cool down considerably from late August onwards, so a sudden spike of over 30ºC will be very much felt. And this is expected in all provincial capitals except barcelona, León, tarragona, Las palmas de Gran Canaria, and the

two city-regions of Ceuta and melilla on the northern African coast – although all of these will see temperatures in the high 20s. the northern sea regions of Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and the basque Country could see the thermometer hit 34ºC, whilst Almería and the land-locked western province of badajoz, in extremadura, will rise to 36ºC. hotter still are bilbao, Jaén and Ciudad real – approximately in the middle of the mainland – with a forecast 37ºC, and Sevilla, Córdoba and Granada, plus most of the towns along the Guadiana and the Guadalquivir

river valleys, are predicted to soar to 38ºC. morning mist and clear, sunny skies, dry storms, and a cloud covering respectively are predicted from east to west across the mainland, with possible strong east winds on the north and south coasts, and south winds everywhere else. Although dropping by a couple of degrees after today, temperatures will remain consistently high in most of the country until the weekend. on the mediterranean, a slight cooling is forecast for thursday, with storms on Friday and a dry weekend.

‘mediterranean day’ will be celebrated on 28th november every year starting with the first-ever one this year (2021), and will mark the region’s cultures, ‘wealth of diversity and difference’, as well as everything that unites the countries bordering the inter-continental sea. the date will be the 26th anniversary of the so-called barcelona process, which set up the euro-mediterranean Association in 1995 to enable coastal nations to work together on socioeconomic and cultural development. its head office remains in barcelona, and has decided to celebrate ‘mediterranean day’ every year from now to raise visibility of the region’s ‘legacy of cultural dialogue, knowledge and humanism’ – in the nonrenaissance sense, although this, too, is a period in history that unites the southern half of the continent of europe in artistic, archaeological and cultural terms. egypt’s nasser Kamel, former ambassador in France and the UK and now secretary-general of the mediterranean bloc, says this sea is what links three continents, 46,000 kilometres of

coastline, and is home to over 480 million people. the Unión por el mediterráneo, as it is known in Spain (‘Union for the mediterranean’, or Upm) is made up of 42 countries – many of which are, in fact, a short-haul flight from the sea in question. All 27 european Union member States are Upm

countries – when the UK left the eU, it automatically left the Upm – as well as noneU european nations on the mediterranean shores, Albania, bosnia, montenegro, monaco and turkey. three continents are involved in the Upm, making it a crucial international cooperation exercise as well as giving voice to southern european society, where social, culture and

economic issues tend to be very different from those of the much larger northern expansion of nations. African nations on the Upm are egypt, Algeria, morocco, tunisia – and mauritania which, although on the west Africa coast and not the med, is the closest countries to the former portuguese colony of Cape Verde, which still has close ties to the ‘mother country’, and shares a border with morocco. Asian member countries are in the middle east – Jordan, israel, Lebanon, Syria, and the palestinian Authority. As it is not essential to be an eU member State to belong to the Upm, britain could, in theory, rejoin, but as a stand-alone nation not part of a continent-wide committee and trading bloc this may not make much sense, given that only its southern european region of Gibraltar is ‘mediterranean’, jutting out into the channel where this joins the north Atlantic. the barcelona declaration of 1995 defines the Upm’s main objectives, classifying them into three broad headings: policy and security, economy and finance, and social, cultural and human issues.

This Week´s Movie Picks 22 Jump Street

Saturday 18th September – ITV, 11.35pm After making their way through high school (twice), big changes are in store for officers Schmidt (Jonah hill) and Jenko (Channing tatum) when they go deep undercover at a local college. but when Jenko meets a kindred spirit on the football team, and Schmidt infiltrates the bohemian art major scene, they begin to question their partnership. now they don’t have to just crack the case - they have to figure out if they can have a mature relationship. if these two overgrown adolescents can grow from freshmen into real men, college might be the best thing that ever happened to them.

The Rock

Sunday 19th September – Channel 5, 11.25pm Stanley Goodspeed, who lives in Washington, d.C., is a biochemist who works for the F.b.i. Soon after his fiancée Carla pestalozzi announces that she is pregnant, Stanley gets a call from F.b.i. director James Womack. Womack tells Stanley that San Francisco’s Alcatraz island has been taken hostage, along with eighty-one tourists, by marine General Francis Xavier hummel who, for years, has been protesting the government’s refusal to pay benefits to families of war veterans who died during covert military operations. the death of his wife barbara on march 9, 1995 drove General hummel over the edge, and now he’s holding hostages in order to get his point across. Stanley is needed because General hummel has stolen some VX gas warheads and has announced that he will launch them onto San Francisco unless his demands are met. Stanley knows how to disarm the bombs, but he needs someone who knows Alcatraz well enough to get him inside. that man is former british intelligence Agent John patrick mason, who has been in prison for the past thirty years without a trial because he was accused of stealing the private files of J. edgar hoover. in 1962, John became the only inmate ever to escape from Alcatraz, and he stayed out of Alcatraz long enough to father a daughter named Jade Angelou. despite his extreme hatred of the F.b.i., John agrees to help Stanley. When John and Stanley are sent into Alcatraz with a navy S.e.A.L. team, General hummel’s men kill the entire S.e.A.L. team, leaving Stanley and John to work on their own to rescue the hostages.

Alcohol-free wine is just as good for your heart It has long been said that a glass of wine a day keeps the doctor away. But experts now say alcohol-free versions may give you all the health benefits of the real thing. Researchers Anglia Ruskin University analysed data from nearly 450,000 people aged 40 to 69 to look at impacts of moderate alcohol consumption on their health. They found a 40 percent reduced risk of coronary heart disease among people who drank up 11 glasses of wine a week compared to non-drinkers and binge drinkers. The same reduced risk was found among those who regularly drank non-alcoholic versions. The finding suggests the benefits are due to the grapes in the wine and therefore debunks they myth that it’s the alcohol itself that has positive effects, the researchers said. Grapes are high in antioxidants called polyphenols, which can improve the function of the inner lining of the heart and increasing levels of protective cholesterol.

Drinking a moderate amount of beer, cider or spirits, on the other hand, was linked with about a 10 per cent increased risk. Experts recommend that adults drink no more than 14 units of alcohol per week, which is around six pints of averagestrength beer or 10 glasses of low-strength wine. A unit of

alcohol is 8g or 10ml of pure alcohol, which is about: a small glass (125ml, ABV 12%) of wine contains about 1.5 units of alcohol. But the risk to your health is increased by drinking any amount of alcohol on a regular basis. Short-term risks include injury, violent behaviour and alcohol poisoning. Long-term risks include heart and liver

disease, strokes, as well as liver, bowel, mouth and breast cancer. People who drink as much as 14 units a week are advised to spread it evenly over three or more days, rather than binge drinking. In the study published in the journal Clinical Nutrition, researchers analysed data from 446,439 people aged between 40 and 69 to look at the impact of moderate amounts of alcohol consumption on health. Participants selfreported how much beer, cider, wine, champagne and spirits they drank per week. Experts monitored their health status for seven years, including overall mortality, heart problems, cancer and and cerebrovascular disease - such as a stroke. Those who drank four to five glasses of champagne or white wine or eight to 11 glasses of red wine had a decreased risk of ischemic heart disease, they said. But the same finding applied to those who drank alcohol-free wine.

Mercadona launches slimming gum One of the latest product launches at popular Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona has got chins wagging in more ways than one. A slimming gum which claims to contribute to weight loss is the latest innovation in the healthcare aisle and has been flying off the shelves. The mildly mint flavoured gum contains Zinc “which contributes to

the normal metabolism of fats and macronutrients”, as well as the probiotic Bifidobacterium lactis BPL1. According to the manufacturer’s instructions, it is recommended to take two Mercadona slimming gums a day – either both at the same time, or at different times of

the day - and chew them for at least six minutes. The gum is being sold under the Deliplus brand and not as Hacendado like Mercadona’s other chewing gum, since these are considered as a food supplement. The packaging warns that

the recommended dose of two a day should not be exceeded and that the product needs to be used along with a healthy diet and lifestyle. It also warns that excessive consumption can generate laxative effects. The bottle of 30 gum tablets (a 15 day supply) is on sale for €3.95 at Mercadona stores and on its website.

Anti-aging tricks from around the world Across the world men and women undergo some pretty drastic antiaging methods in order to, literally, peel years off their lives. The following odd anti-aging treatments from around the globe might make you a little squeamish, but they prove that people will do almost anything to remain looking young, thin, and beautiful…

Sake Hydrating Bath Skin feeling a little parched? I’ll bet you never considered that bathing in sake might rejuvenate that flaky skin? Well, the people of Japan have used this popular spa treatment for ages. In fact, geishas once bathed in sake due to its richness in amino acids, a natural moisturizer. Today, spa goers immerse themselves in hot tubs while a steady drip of sake streams from an overhead cask. Cactus Massage There’s nothing relaxing about a massage using a cactus plant. However, that doesn’t stop Mexican resorts from touting the spiky scrub down as the latest in therapeutic body treatments. First, the therapist will rub you down using prickly cactus leaves, followed by a scrub with coarse salt, lime and tequila. Snail Secretion Facials If creepy crawlies make you squeamish this classic Chilean facial will have you running for the hills. The snail secretion facial is just as it sounds, practitioners allow gooey snails to crawl and secrete on your face as a way

to protect your skin against ultraviolet radiation and turn back the clock. Luckily if you draw the line at letting this slimy critters crawl over your face, there are now creams and serums that use the secretion as their key ingredient. Leech Bloodletting This rather sadistic-sounding treatment was first introduced way back in the Middle Ages. Doctors carried leeches in their medical bags, and let them attach to the skin of a sick person and literally suck out the illness and disease. Bloodletting or leech therapy continues to be a popular anti-aging and detoxifying treatment, particularly for movies stars, like Demi Moore, who openly swears by her regular treatments. Chocolate Body Wrap While filling your belly with a pound of chocolate is awful for your health; it would seem that wrapping yourself in chocolate has quite the opposite effect. The chocolate body wrap is quite popular around the world for its antioxidant and anti-aging benefits— not to mention that the idea of being immersed in the decadent aroma of chocolate is quite delicious. Slithering Snake Massage Don’t worry; the practitioners who practice snake massages in Israel don’t put poisonous or venomous reptiles on the job. However, they do use a slithering collection of corn snakes, milk snakes, and Florida kings to knead sore muscles.

Gold Facial It seems like the evil Bond villain, Goldfinger, was doing poor Shirley Eaton a favour when he encased the Bond girl in solid gold. This pricey star-studded treatment is used as a therapeutic anti-aging facial in Japan. The warm liquid gold is poured over the face to make a mould (with eye, nose, and mouth holes) and clients get to keep their gold face mask as a souvenir. Beer Bath The Germans, purveyors of the world’s best beer, see past the consumption

aspects of their brew. They prepare beer soaks as a natural skin moisturising treatment with friends. Yes, beer baths are group treatments. Just beware of the friend who brings a straw! Geisha Facial This next rather odd Japanese beauty treatment has been used for centuries by, as the name suggests, Geishas. The traditional Japanese female hostesses spread nightingale guano (which is a polite name for droppings) mixed with other ingredients in a paste over the face. The “geisha facial” is still used

today to moisturise and lighten the skin under ultraviolet lamps. Nibbling Fish Exfoliation If your feet are ticklish you might not opt for this touching toes treatment, made popular in Asia, for its natural exfoliating prowess. During the treatment, the therapist fills a shared pool with water and fish that nibble at the dead skin on your tired tootsies. It might feel amazing, but keep in mind the thought of the shared skin floating around.

Replacement Logbook Application If you have lost your Spanish logbook, or if it has become damaged beyond use, you can now apply for a replacement online using your electronic ID, digital signature or Cl@ve. The logbook, or permiso de circulación, and the ITV card, are both mandatory documents which must be carried in the vehicle in Spain. There are future exemptions for vehicles which will have digital ITV cards, but for the most, the paper documents are still required. However, because they are made of paper, they can easily become damaged or lost. It is important to note that only the original documents, or those certified by a Notary are acceptable, you can´t simply photocopy them yourself. In order to make it easier to obtain a replacement, the DGT has now provided the facility to apply for a duplicate online using your digital signature or approved electronic identity. The permiso de circulación is the document that identifies the ownership of any type of vehicle - including special vehicles, agricultural and works and services. You can request a duplicate in cases of theft, deterioration or loss. You can request the renewal in the case of change of data (name, surname, company name, change of service, reform of importance, etc.). Before making the duplicate or renewal, you must make sure that your vehicle has no restriction to drive. To do this, access the reduced report of your vehicle. If the result of the consultation indicates that you have Incidents, it is recommended that you consult the

nearest Provincial Headquarters or request a detailed report of the vehicle in order to know the details and resolve them. Only a vehicle without incidents can continue with the duplicate request. If what has changed is the municipality in which you are registered, what you must do is a change the registered address of your vehicle. You may also have to change the address on your driving licence, if you have moved. The ITV card or data sheet is the document that proves that the vehicle is approved to travel on the roads. These cards are issued by ITV stations, if you need a duplicate of that, you must request it at any ITV station. However, if your vehicle has the electronic ITV card or eITV, then the duplicate can be provided by the trafico offices. How to apply for the duplicate: Online - Only for cases of duplicate due to loss, theft or deterioration of

the permiso de circulación. This can be done through the web portal: https://sedeclave.dgt.gob.es/WEB_ RELW/web/asunto/DUPV The new permit will be sent directly by mail to the address you indicate in the “Modo de notificación” section. You will receive it in approximately two weeks from the receipt of the application. In person Delivering all documentation at any trafico office (Alicante or Elche are the closest). In this case, you need to request an appointment online or by calling 060. In Post offices - You can request the duplicate in the commercial network of Correos for cases of loss, deterioration or theft thereof. Full details of the procedure are available online via the DGT website, https://sede.dgt.gob.es/es/vehiculos/ duplicados-renovaciones/ You can also view the logbook in the Mi DGT app.

Children returned to school last week which means that there will be an increase in cars on the roads at certain times of day, the infamous “school run”, and more vulnerable road users out and about. If you are taking children in the car, there are a few things you must remember, so the school run serves as a timely reminder. Children under 1.35 metres in height are not allowed in the front seats and must sit in the back. The only exceptions are if there are no rear seats, such as a sports car, or if the seats are already occupied by other children. All occupants must be secured in the vehicle, by means of a seat belt, or specially designed retention system suitable for them, that includes children. Those of a younger age must have a suitable seat which must be secured. Another important point to remember is that all vehicle occupants must wear a seat belt. Some cars only have two seat belts at the back. In this case, only two passengers can be carried. A seat belt is required for all occupants. All objects must also be secure in the vehicle. That not only means their school bags, lunchboxes, and football kit, but also that school project they must take in, nearer the end of term. It is a good idea to test the seat belts in your vehicle on a regular basis. Make sure the clasp clicks securely in the holder, that it locks in place and doesn´t pull out under pressure, whilst making sure it does open when the release

button is pressed. You should also check the locking mechanism on the seat belt itself by pulling sharply on the belt, simulating a pull under pressure. These checks are all carried out during the ITV inspection but as failures can occur at any time, it is important that you check them regularly yourself. When you arrive at the school drop off point, remember that the laws still apply and you´re not allowed to double-park, block entrances, or park in an illegal place with your hazard lights on just because you are dropping off your children for school. Doing this creates an additional hazard and puts the children at risk. You must choose a safe, convenient, and legal place to drop off your

children. Where possible, ensure that they exit the vehicle on the pavement side, still warning them to be aware of their surroundings before opening the door. They may hit a pedestrian, item of street furniture, or another object, so they should be taught to be aware and alert before opening the door. If they must leave on the roadside, vigilance is even more important, they must check it is totally safe before opening the door and must move to the pavement as soon as possible. Remember, when you are about to pull away, pay extra attention to your surroundings too, including rigorous checks of your blind spots, as there could be children or other road users appearing from anywhere.

Linea Directa Valencia Bowls Championships gets underway

The 2021 Linea Directa Valencian Championships get underway on Wednesday 15th September, with play taking place at the Emerald Isle and Quesada Bowls Clubs. The traditional parade of clubs and opening ceremony will not take place due to Covid-19 restrictions so play will get underway at both venues starting at 10am with the qualifying round of the Mixed Triples. Holders Brenda Jiggins, John Jukes and Graham Richardson of Country Bowls will be in action at the Emerald Isle against La Marina’s Mike, Anne Stone and Tom Spencer. The Mixed Triples will then be played through to the semi final stage on Wednesday and Thursday. Friday and Saturday sees the Mixed Pairs, which will also be played through to the last four, at the two venues. La Marina’s Margaret McLaughlin and Tom Spencer, who won the 2020 competition at Greenlands, will not be contesting the current contest but there are nevertheless some attractive pairings during the early rounds. The return of Pete and Lisa Bonsor to these shores, following their sojourn down under, will provide some additional spice to the mixed pairs which could be won by a married couple for the first time since the Bishops in 2015. In addition to the Bonsors, the couples to look out for are Vistabella’s Martin and Maureen Foulcer, Colin and Mel Highland from Quesada, and Drew and Ann Marie Gerrard representing the Emerald Isle. The Men’s and Ladies Pairs will be played on Sunday and Monday. Men’s holders Gary Thorpe, who won the competition last year, is paired with Fred Willey and will meet another

Vistabella pair in round one, Ian Kenyon and Martin Foulcer. In the Ladies Competition, San Miguel’s holders Val Hignett and Anita Brown will have no easy passage with a first round tie against Sue Jordan and Irene Laverick of La Siesta. The two blue ribbon events, the Men’s and Ladies Singles will see two time winner Peter Morgan of Quesada seeking his third consecutive title, but first, in what must surely be the tie of the round, he will have to get past the 2017 champion Martin Foulcer at Quesdada. That match will be played at Quesada at 1230 on Tuesday 21st. There will be a new title holder in the Ladies Singles, without Maggie Furness, which gets underway on Wednesday 22nd, but there will be no shortage of competition with three previous winners, Anita Brown 2014, Peta Rhodes 2017 and Ann Marie Gerrard 2019 all vying for ownership of the prestigious title. As last year’s runner up, Ann Marie will be hoping to go one place further but she will first have to get past Carole Donnelan of Country Bowls in Round one. Peta Rhodes meets another CB competitor, Sheena Mallet, while Anita Brown faces Linda Hier of Greenlands Bowls Club. All of the rounds will be played through to the semi final stage prior to the semis and the finals moving to the Emerald Isle Bowls Club where they will be played during the period 25 – 28 September. There is plenty of seating available at both venues where spectators are welcome, absolutely free of charge, throughout the entire competition. Linea Directa will be proudly sponsoring the tournament for the sixth consecutive year.

As managers up and down the country waited to see whether they could pick their non-Argentinian South American players, there was a groan at Old Trafford when the new came through - Fred was, in fact, available for selection. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer remained brave though - clearly, Ronaldo had told him that the Brazilian is rubbish and there was no way he could be seen on the same pitch as him for his second debut. Freddie Woodman had clearly read the script that demanded all the people watching Manchester United vs Newcastle on an illegal stream somewhere were able to see Ronaldo net twice on his first Premier League match in a while. Woodman fumbled the first one into the path of United’s number 7 for the first and then nicely let the second fly through his legs to make Cristiano an instant match-winner. Bruno, however, may well have been advised not to ping one top bins from 30-odd yards. It just will not do to go around upstaging his international teammate. Cue the cries of United probably winning the league on social media whilst conveniently forgetting that title-winning sides rarely let Javier Manquillo score against them. We can only presume that Christian Benteke had done a mighty fine job of softening up the Tottenham defence before stepping aside like a gentleman to allow Odsonne Edouard to take the glory, the big signing from Celtic scoring two on his Premier League debut. All those nay-sayers that had proclaimed, “Nah, mate - Scottish football’s easy. He’ll never do it in the Premier League” must have felt a little foolish as Edouard scored as many goals in 10 minutes than it feels like Benteke has managed in his entire

Wilf Zaha delightfully baited Japhet Tanganga into picking up two yellow cards but Palace were already dominating the game before Spurs went down to ten. It would appear that the Premier League Manager of the Month curse is alive and well as Nuno’s side were completely and utterly put to the sword by Vieira’s Palace side that many (OK, maybe just me then) had tipped for relegation this season. Vieira has now got one over Tottenham in four different decades, apparently. Somehow, I feel that might not be the most exclusive of clubs he is in. You might feel that had Peppy G been forced to select Scott Carson ahead of Ederson that Man City may not have walked away from the King Power with all three points - no wonder Guardiola was so effusive for all things FIFA when appearing to back Arsene Wenger’s plans for a World Cup every two years. Bernardo Silva showed that there is a decent Portuguese match-winner available on the other side of the city, netting the winner for Pep in a 1-0 win. King Kloppo might not be too interested in what other people get up to in the ‘transfer circus’ but unless Liverpool break with their recent convention and pay Mo Salah the really big bucks, then Jurgen will be needing to find someone capable of replacing his Egyptian goalmachine. And, given that Harvey Elliot saw his leg broken in the name of letting football ‘flow’ he might be wishing they’d brought in another midfielder. Mind you, at least Naby escaped that coup. Salah put the Reds ahead at Leeds with his 100th Premier League strike - making him quicker than quite a few proper centre-forwards in the process. Liverpool pretty much battered a Leeds side that left more holes open than a particular aerated string vest. Fabinho and Mane scored t’other two. Still, decent atmosphere at Elland Road, eh?

As Dean Smith astutely noted, Aston Villa did have as many good chances as their opponents Chelsea at Stamford Bridge - the main difference being that their £96m striker took the ones that came his way. Yet, and allow me a momentary moan about modern footballers if you will, for some bizarre reason the very same £96m striker is not banned from doing stupid knee slides after scoring a goal. Anyone who saw Lukaku jam his very expensive, highly-insured joints into the turf after putting Chelsea ahead will have winced. Lukaku posted after the game that there will be no more knee slides for him after scoring - out of embarrassment or at the request of the insurers? I urge every manager in the game to fine the goalscorer their bonus if they do it. Maybe show them a couple of videos of the Klinsmann belly-slide or even the Kuqi swallowdive if they really need to hit the deck. There was a lot to like about Villa but when it came down to it, Lukaku scored his first-ever pro goals at the Bridge and Tyrone Mings turned out to be more effective for Chelsea than Saul Niguez by creating Kovacic’s goal. The relegation battle at the Emirates ended up 1-0 to the Arsenal - but was their goal offside and guilty of a little handball in the build-up? Now, now - let’s not be too mean. Arteta’s men

are going to need some luck here and there otherwise they will never end up in mid-table obscurity. Arsenal contrived to miss 29 efforts on goal whilst scoring just once. Efficient is not a word you could sanely use here. Mind you, it made Pepe happy - he is now convinced that Arsenal will be a Premier League side next season. Wolves finally managed to get the ball in the opposition net - except they didn’t, Watford kindly did it for them. Having seen that the impossible was actually possible, they went and nicked another and won 2-0. Brentford could well be the new Brighton already. And by that, I mean that they are a decent team that is quite pleasant to watch but unable to kill teams off (unless, of course, that team is Arsenal). Brighton netted a late winner to, incredibly, keep themselves amongst the early frontrunners. Said early front-runners still include West Ham who could have been sitting pretty at the top had they managed to beat Southampton. The curse of the Manager of the Month seems to have extended itself to the Player of the Month award as well as Michail Antonio, the current holder, managed to get sent off in the 0-0 draw. Chelsea-loanee Broja managed to do more in a mere 10 minutes than the other 22 players cobbled together in an entire 90-minute shift.

The annual El Bosquet fishing festival started at the complex in Crevillente on Monday the 6th of September and was fished over three days , Monday, Wednesday & Friday. The full results for the three days and the overall standings are as follows.

The overall winner was the venue specialist and allround great guy, Neil McBernie. Neil was closely followed by Tony McMillan and I managed to secure third place. Further details of all our matches and lots of info can be found on our website at www.abbeyangling.es Ian Brown
