Orihuela Mayor talks to people of the Coast

in an exclusive interview, the mayor of orihuela, emilo bascuñana, has addressed some of the key issues for residents of orihuela Costa in an attempt to provide accurate and upto-date information on the things that

effect daily lives. he contacted the Costa blanca people, as the area’s leading local newspaper, specifically so that he could reach the majority of local people. the mayor said: “i want to talk to the

local residents of the Coast, those who live in orihuela Costa and are the heart of the local community. i read lots of things where information is given from different sources and sometimes it isn’t the most up-to-date or accurate.

“i want to explain the issues that surround some of the biggest talking points for local residents such as pandemic business support, the dAnA recovery, street cleaning and coastal amenities.” For those who don’t know much about the mayor; he is a medical doctor and a family man, married for 35 years and father of three children, who have all followed in his medical footsteps. Last summer emilio became a grandfather for the first time and this year added another grandchild to the family. emilio spent the summer of his youth

26 year old dies in Benidorm selfie fall

A 26 year old Ukranian tourist died after she fell from the Castell de benidorm while trying to take a selfie. the woman was admitted to Alicante General hospital after a dramatic rescue effort but passed away due to the severity of her injuries. the young woman and a friend were spending a few days’ holiday in benidorm, staying at a tourist apartment in Cala de La Vila. the pair were about to take a photo at the Castell viewpoint when one climbed on the balustrades and lost her balance. According to reports given by eyewitnesses to the national police, the woman tried unsuccessfully to hold onto the railing after the fall but tragically, plunged off the cliff before hitting the rocks below and falling unconscious into the sea which at the time was extremely rough with large waves. rescue workers and lifeguards from came to the scene to try to rescue the young woman after receiving a call to 112. After several minutes of battling

the rough sea, one young lifeguard managed to grab hold of the victim and get her to the rescue boat. the boat sped to the port where a sAmU ambulance was waiting and medical personnel managed to stabilize her. As her condition was extremely serious she was rushed to Alicante General hospital where she was admitted in critical condition and underwent emergency surgery. the police took care of the friend of the injured girl and through her, contacted the victim’s family in the Ukraine to tell them what had happened.

Third dose of Covid vaccine in October the third dose of the Covid vaccine will be rolled out from october in nursing homes across the Valencian Community, it was announced this week. spain’s minister for health Carolina darias made the announcement that vaccination with the third dose should begin on october 4th after the plan was approved by all autonomous regions at last week’s interterritorial

Council and given the final signoff by the public health Commission, which has the last word on such matters. minister darias could not be drawn to comment on the situation in other countries such as France where there is now an obligation for health and nursing home workers to be vaccinated. instead, she said she valued the high level of vaccination in

spain saying that 90 % of the susceptible population, people over 12 years of age, have had their jabs. people in a clinical state of immunosuppression such as transplant patients, cancer patients, hiV patients or people with down syndrome will also receive the third dose against the coronavirus.

Continued from page 1 emilio founded the orihuela branch of the Cruz roja providing the first aid and rescue service on local beaches and went on to become the organisations provincial head. the mayor worked in the medical centre at Campoamor, where he met the current King of spain Felipe Vi, who at the time was at the san Javier General Air Force Academy and frequently spent time in Campoamor. in his professional career emilio founded numerous medical centres on the coast of orihuela and in torrevieja to provide a basic service that at that time did not exist. All the above meant that when emilio started in politics in 2015, at the age of 56 he had a wide and solid management experience in local projects and improvements. the mayor said: “it has been two years since we started this legislature which has been like no other in history. First there was the damage wreaked by the dAnA flooding in 2019 - which is still a key part of our day-to-day work load – and then came the global pandemic. For the last 18months we have work every day to mitigate its economic and social effects. “this is why last week we approved the third consignment of the first call of ‘plan resistir’ with a budget of more than 962.531,4€. the second call will be agreed soon and will benefit any business located in the municipality affected by the economic repercussions of Covid with a budget of 2 million euros. We are working to provide the coast with all of the necessary services because it is growing very quickly. We now have the project agreed for the construction of a new multi-functional

centre for the coast, which is currently with the Contracts department with a budget of 80,000 euros. the project has been developed alongside a number of associations, resident and community groups from orihuela Costa spearheaded by the Councillor for Civic participation, Almudena baldó. the new multi-functional centre will have a main hall which can be used for theatre shows and general entertainment performances as well as a computer room, meeting and exhibition facilities. the total investment for the building will be around € 2,000,000. “At last, we are proud to have finished the long-awaited emergency Centre that will house the local police, an ambulance - over which we continue to fight for a 24-hour service – and firefighters. this week we have agreed the contract for the supply of equipment and furniture, which means that we will have the local emergency services working from the building very soon. Also pending approval in the next few days is a budget of € 1.300,000 to finish the top floor. Waste collection “Another important point i want to talk to people about is the refuse collection service. i am aware of the situation and we are working to approve a new waste collection plan. the one that is in place was agreed in 2008 and so is completely out-ofdate and does not cover the needs of a municipality that has grown so much in recent years. We need a management system that improves the service and meets the needs of a mixed municipality and that is what we are working towards. i thank the workers who make the

distinguish what we would like to do, from what can actually be done; of the responsibility we bear and the consequences of our actions and decisions on the municipality. i hope this has useful for the people of the coast to hear what is really happening with the issues that shape their daily lives and to know that the coast is never forgotten but the wheels of administration are often slower than any of us would like.

best possible effort every day to keep our streets in the best condition with the resources available. orihuela is one of the municipalities with the lowest tax burden and our urbanistic model requires considerable human and material resources. i ask you, the people who live in orihuela Costa, to help keep your streets clean by sticking to the garden waste or furniture collection schedule and to arrange collection for larger items, which we will collect, free of charge. i want to take this opportunity to explain a topic that has been in the news in recent weeks, as i would like the people of the coast what was really behind the approval for the modification of the partial plan of sector d-1 ‘Alameda del mar – or Cala mosca as the project has become known. in 1990 the General plan classified this sector as developable land. subsequently, the plan progressed and the detailed development was approved by the city council in 1995.

After multiple proceedings since this time, in 2021, and based on all sector reports, a modification was approved which attempts to safeguard the environmental and heritage values of the area. i have to say thank you to the neighbourhood movement and the interest of the municipal representatives and the Consellería, as they have made it possible to protect the fauna and flora in the most appropriate way to safeguard the urban, environmental, and economic interests of the municipality. however, it is simply impossible to prevent something that has been approved for so many years and modifying it would entail a high risk of being liable for millions in compensation, which would be impossible for the municipal coffers to bear. From this point we must

Torrevieja leads anti drugs operation: 6 officers arrested

Jail for con artists targeting elderly

Guardia Civil in torrevieja took the lead on a widespread anti drug operation which culminated this week in the arrest of six officers – five local police and a Guardia Civil. 3000 marijuana plants were seized and a total of 25 arrests were made. Although the operation was led, and the case will be tried, in torrevieja, the arrests themselves were made in the province of badajoz. police revealed that they seized more than 3000 marijuana plants spread out over four indoor plantations. they also said that more arrests have not been ruled out since the investigation is still underway. the case is still under secrecy order, so the exact details of the link to torrevieja are yet unclear. the operation is being led by officers from the Central operative Unit of the Civil Guard under the direction of a torrevieja court, in collaboration with internal Affairs of the national police and the Guardia Civil. A major criminal network has been taken down by the operation and in fact, police believe the larger network was made up of several smaller organisations that interacted with each other in the growing, processing, packaging and distribution of marijuana. As part of the sting, police carried out more than 20 raids at premises and as well as seizing the plants, also took possession of growing equipment and several vehicles.

A couple have been sent to jail for targeting elderly women with a ‘glass of water’ scam. According to police, the detainees would specifically search for older women as they were leaving supermarkets and banks and follow them to their homes. national police in Alicante arrested the couple, aged 30 and 25, accused of robbing six elderly women who lived alone. the pair would gain access to the women’s homes by asking for a glass of water in hot weather, or by posing as the relative of a neighbour (whose name they would have gleaned by looking at the community mailboxes). the 30-year-old woman detained has had 62 previous arrests and at the time of the most recent, was wearing a penitentiary institutions telematic bracelet as she was serving a sentence

for similar crimes in Valencia. her partner, 25, also has 26 previous arrests and both have done time in prison. officers recovered a quantity of stolen jewellery from the pair. they also robbed money and bank cards, stealing more than €18,000 from a 90-year-old woman through withdrawals at Atms in Alicante and benidorm. According to the police, the detainees would look for victims among older women who came out of supermarkets or banks and follow them to their homes. in some cases the woman asked for a glass of water because she was hot and in others she pretended to be pregnant to gain the trust of the victims. once the woman entered the victim’s home, she would leave the door ajar and her accomplice would then enter to steal.

pre-pandemic the answer would be anytime between January to July then sep-tember to december. this year so far though, the marketplace has definitely changed. potential buyers are returning to spain as and when they can. they’re not taking any chances on potential travel restrictions. August is usually a quiet month for property sales however August 2021 proved to be very busy indeed. buyers that purchase during Autumn and Winter are often looking for the Winter sun. sunny outside areas, south facing properties, etc. Whereas buyers that are searching in spring and summer are looking for sun as well as shaded areas.

Citrus crop under threat Farmers in the Vega baja have warned that the citrus crops in the area are under grave threat from the expansion of the south African mealybug. the problem has destroyed crops in Castellón and Valencia and farmers are very concerned about the risk to lemon, orange and mandarin crops here. the bug, known as a ‘cotonet’ (delottococcus aberiae), arrived in the Valencian Community due to an importation of citrus from south Africa. the pest deforms the fruits making them useless and preventing their sale and, in most cases, its difficult detection makes it too late to fix. the main danger of transmission is found in the habitual use of collection boxes, if used in infested production areas and not disinfected correctly, the mealybug is spread. Farmers from the Vega baja and murcia regions have voiced their fears, with representatives from the AsAJA (the Young Farmers Association of Alicante) warning of the ‘unstoppable advance of the cotonet’, pointing out that often, boxes for the transportation of fruit come from the north of the Valencian Community (currently a problem area) without being cleaned or disinfected. Currently, very early mandarins are beginning to be harvested here. buyers coming to collect the fruit from the Vega

baja are coming from the north of the Valencian Community and if they bring infected boxes, the mealybug will spread to farms in the south of Alicante. the AsAJA is asking the ministry of Agriculture to ensure compliance with protocols established during the harvesting and transporting of citrus fruits by businesses that enter the province of Alicante to collect fruit. the dreaded south African mealybug arrived in spain in 2009 and, since then, has spread uncontrollably throughout the Valencian Community where it has caused damage in 80 municipalities. Growers here have criticized the importation of citrus fruits from countries where production protocols are not governed by the

same strict phytosanitary and environmental regulations as europe. Last growing season, the Asian cochineal destroyed 5000 hectares of crop in the region. the south African mealybug is said to be even more deadly and harder to control. to combat the problem, the Valencian Government approved mass releases of two known predators of the mealybug – a type of mealybug eating ladybird and a parasitic wasp. Central government has authorized the exceptional use of methyl chlorpyrifos, a very effective insecticide, banned in the eU, which will be applied by technicians from the ministry of Agriculture together with the disinfection of materials for agricultural use.

Fed up with your financial adviser? By Tracy Storer Senior Partner Chorus Financial people become complacent, take things for what they are, and accept that sometimes things may suffer as a result. the financial services industry is no different, especially when it comes to ongoing service and advice. i’ve been in this industry for nearly a decade and believe me when i say, the number of financial advisers i’ve seen come and go has been comparable to Gatwick airport (pre-Covid of course!). i may make light fun of this, but on a serious note it has created some serious issues within what should be a very well respected, relied upon industry. i do feel we are turning a corner, and with tighter regulation being enforced all of the time, the cowboys and unregulated firms are finally being squeezed out. but what happens to all of those clients who were advised by such people, what happens to them?

Well over the years, Chorus have seen influxes of ‘orphan’ clients who have lost contact with their adviser. some of these clients will have been passed to a ‘new adviser’ within the same firm. it’s often the case that their new adviser isn’t located in their nearest town, city, province or indeed the same country! some clients have found their new adviser is based in jurisdictions as far as the middle east!so, they are left with an adviser, possibly in a different time-zone, with no local presence, likely no knowledge of spanish rules and regulations, or indeed the tax system, and it becomes a real challenge to receive appropriate advice or forge a good clientadviser relationship. i wanted to write this article to make people aware just how simple it is to appoint an appropriate adviser and just how you and your finances could benefit from it.

one of the most important parts of my job is to truly get to know my clients, to have a personal relationship with them, to fully understand their needs and objectives. i’ll grow to appreciate their concerns or doubts, even how computer literate they may or may not be, and more often than not, their dog’s name!!! honestly, it is those little things that makes all the difference, and it is the foundations on which trust can be built. being passed from one adviser to the next is not ideal, how can your goals and objectives truly be met if you are having to constantly switch advisers?or possibly, even if the service or returns aren’t good, you go with the ‘better the devil you know’ approach! switching to a Chorus adviser is a simple and quick process, involving one or two forms that we’ll pre-fill for you. this

will result in you having a permanent, expert, experienced adviser, who will promise not to pass you from pillar to post and will give you industry leading service and advice. Changing adviser generally involves no additional fees, and at Chorus we can often strip as much as 2-3% in hidden or unnecessary charges from your existing plan, whilst ensuring you are leftin an appropriate, high quality portfolio. Chorus will continue to help clients who are either unhappy or have lost contact with their financial adviser. We truly believe that we can add value to your existing investments or pensions, and we will be able to demonstrate this to you in a call or a meeting. if you would like to discuss your options, please email me on t.storer@ chorusfinancial.es or call me on +34 693 107 044.

Investment contracts are intended as medium to long term investments, and all investments have some level of risk. Figures in our articles are examples of what can be achieved and cannot be guaranteed; the value of your investments can go down as well as up. Fees and charges can vary and will be fully explained to you before any advice can take place. This article should not be considered as investment advice or a recommendation of any particular product.

GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP Flipping and flopping across the week, sterling had a day in first place among the major currencies and another at the back of the pack. the frequent changes of direction meant the pound was on average just about unchanged. its best results were against the swiss franc and Australian dollar, with gains of 0.8%. its worst was the 0.6% that it lost to the norwegian krone. the UK economic data were a decidedly mixed bag, with a few surprises cropping up. september’s employment report showed payrolls returning to pre-pandemic levels, with more than a million people on furlough and a similar number of unfilled job vacancies. however, concerns are shared amongst investors on whether the jobs market is really is as strong as it first looks. the end is nigh for the furlough scheme, and shortages in key industries, as well as bottlenecks in global shipping and subsequent supply chain crisis, will shape sterling’s early autumn performance. inflation rose to a nine-year high of 3.2%, the largest ever increase recorded in the Cpih national statistic 12-month inflation rate series. however this is likely to be a temporary change because of the discounted eat-outto-help-out restaurant prices a year earlier.on the debit side, UK retail sales unexpectedly fell 0.9% in August, leaving them flat on the year. Analysts had predicted monthly and annual increases of 0.5% and 2.7%, but instead food store sales fell by 1.2%. the ons said this

was linked to the removal of restrictions on hospitality leading to more people eating out, with labour shortages and supply chain disruptions also to blame. EURO starting off with a focus on Germany, where federal elections take place next sunday. Chancellor Angela merkel will not be seeking re-election and it is not clear who will replace her. data releases this week showed German wholesale prices rising 0.5% in August, leaving them 12.3% higher on the year. it was the biggest annual increase since the first oil crisis in 1974. Germany also confirmed last Friday that consumer prices rose by 3.9% in the year to August, with the hiCp inflation measure released this week at 3.4%. statistically, and in common with countries on both sides of the Atlantic, one of the main topics was inflation.Across the eurozone it varied between 1.9% (Greece) and 4.5% (slovakia). the data for euroland as a whole come out today, and are expected to put headline inflation at 3%. there was not much to be gleaned from the other euroland ecostats. industrial production in July was up by 7.7% from the same month last year but investors were not really interested. on average the euro was very slightly lower on the week. it eventually lost a fifth of a cent to sterling and half a Us cent, but there was no urgency to its movements.

Spanish Government puts brakes on rising electricity prices the Council of ministers will approve new measures today to try to stop the rise in electricity bills due to the record prices that electricity has been reaching in the wholesale market for weeks now. the news was broken recently by prime minister pedro sánchez in an interview with tVe, where he outlined that the suspension of the energy generation tax (7 percent) will be extended until the end of the year and that special tax will be reduced from 5.1 to 0.5 percent, “the minimum required by eU law”. pedro sánchez added that it is not “acceptable” that electricity companies are reaping “extraordinary benefits”, which is why he also intends to “cap gas bills” before the expected price rise over the coming months. “[Companies] can afford it, here we all have to make an effort,” insisted the president. in addition, the prime minister pointed out that “a distinction must be made” between the price of energy in the markets - where “no government has the legal capacity to act” - and

the impact of the market on electricity bills - where the wholesale price can have an impact of between 20 and 30 percent. he also claimed that, until now, the government had tried to lower electricity prices with structural reforms - promoting renewable energy sources, protecting the most vulnerable families by not allowing supplies to be cut off due to nonpayment, and reducing taxes such as VAt and generation tax – and has asked Congress to expedite the measures pending parliamentary endorsement. the rise in electricity has put a strain on the coalition in recent weeks, although after pedro sánchez’s announcement, the minister of social rights and leader of podemos, ione belarra, said that “it is the best news” that the psoe “has accepted some” proposals from Up. “the government must protect the people from profiteering power companies,” she said. Finally, pedro sánchez also referred to the temporary situation of the General

Pedro Sánchez

Council of the Judiciary, in office since 2018, and urged pablo Casado to “comply with the Constitution”, facilitate the renewal of the body and “not speak badly of spain” when abroad. “We have 1000 days of constitutional insubordination. the pp is blocking the renewal,” concluded the president, who called the pp leader’s demand to change the system of election of the members so that judges elect the members, in line with the eU recommendations, as an “excuse” to maintain the blockade.

Ingvar of Quesada asks “My smartphone will not accept new apps for example zoom or upgrade old ones for ex. WhatsApp. My Smartphone is ZTE Blade L 7 4-5 years old.” i have looked at the specification for your phone. the Zte blade L 7 only has 8G bytes of storage and 1G byte of rAm (memory). these figures are very low for modern smartphones. With such a small amount of storagespace i would think that you don’t have enough space to update Apps or add new Apps. You need to uninstall Apps that you don’t need.

if you do that you will then need to update all Apps that have updates. do you have a sd memory card fitted? if you do you may be able to move some files or Apps from your phone to the sd card to free up space. Alanof Albatera asks “Can I make free voice calls on my Smartphone?” there are several ways to make free calls. these are:WhatsApp, messenger and skype. these are all Apps that can be installed on any smartphone. to use these Apps you must have internet access either by WiFi or using your telephone providers data allowance. 1. WhatsApp allows you to make free voice and video calls send text messages and send and receive files and photos. You must have the recipients mobile phone number in your phones “Contacts”. download and install WhatsApp. to use WhatsApp for the first time will require you to register your details and allow your phone to have access. You need to enter your name, country location and mobile

phone number. to register you are prompted to verify your phone number. this is done by WhatsApp send you a code by sms. enter the code and you are now registered. to start using WhatsApp search for a contact using the same name that you have in your contacts list. if they use WhatsApp their name will appear. select the name to start a text message, voice call or video call. 2. messenger. to use messenger you first must have a Facebook account. You don’t need to use Facebook but you need it to start using messenger. messenger allows you to text make voice and video calls. 3. skype. to use skype the recipient also needs to have skype installed on smartphone or Computer. to find anyone else you want to talk to, select thesearch skypebox in the top left corner and search for their actual name, skype name, or email address. A bonus with skype is that you can add credit to your account and make calls to landlines and mobiles worldwide. the calls are cents per minute.

Mother complains about breast milk ban An Alicante mother has lodged a complaint against a municipal ‘guarderia’ or nursery school in Alicante after she was told she was not allowed to send breast milk with which to feed her four month old baby. The issue first came to light via Facebook when the mother took to the social media platform to voice her “frustration and indignation” about the situation. Her post has generated huge support and was even shared by celebrities within Spain to highlight the issue. Before taking the issue to social media, the mother had previously filed a formal complaint with the Board of Nursery Schools, the body that manages the two nursery schools run by Alicante City Council. She was sure at the outset that the issue was as a result of a misunderstanding because according to the World Health Organisation, children should be breastfed if possible for the first six months. However, the terse reply she received from the Board outraged her. She was told that breast milk is not admitted as it is classed as a food not prepared on the premises. The nursery school has since replied to queries from the media and said that mothers are encouraged

to visit the nursery school to breastfeed their children, but that bottles of expressed milk are not allowed in the general refrigerators of the school “to ensure the hygiene and safety of the children.” The nursery claimed it does not have the means to keep breast milk at an appropriate temperature and for hygiene it cannot be stored alongside the rest of the centre’s food items. The mother in question explained that she works, which is why her baby is in day care, and which in turn is why she expresses milk so her child can be fed when she is unavailable to breastfeed. It seems that private nursery schools, unlike council run centres, do not restrict mothers who want their children to be fed with breast milk. Most have facilities to store expressed milk when a nursing mother cannot

visit the nursery in person. After the issue went viral on Facebook, the Mayor of Alicante took to his own Facebook page to offer support to the mother in question, saying, “I want to make it clear that we fully understand her position and that we support breastfeeding. I have personally spoken with Flor to guarantee that we will solve this issue immediately, as it cannot be otherwise.” He concluded, “I also want to say that it is an issue that matters a lot to me, since personally I have always been in favour of breastfeeding in the first months and in the need to help mothers to be able to reconcile their work life with the family one without further burdens or guilt. It is a service that must be essential in all public centres and I have given instructions to resolve it immediately.”

Bake off is back! The Great British Bake Off 2021 is here with a brand new batch of bakers heading into the infamous white tent, hoping that their showstoppers are edible and that the technical challenge doesn’t leave them with a soggy bottom. Last year’s The Great British Bake Off saw the show air slightly later in the year than usual due to the coronavirus pandemic, but while this year’s series is set to return to regular scheduling, it has been revealed that the bakers formed isolation bubbles for filming. Speaking on Lorraine earlier this year, Matt Lucas shared more details about how the show has been made under covid restrictions: “Like last year, we’re going into a bubble – all self-isolating and getting tested and then we’re going into COVID-free bubble, so we can all taste each other’s bakes and there can be handshakes

and all sorts.” It has been confirmed that The Great British Bake Off 2021 will start on Channel 4 on Tuesday 21 September at 8pm. It will then air weekly in the same slot. You will be able to catch up on missed episodes after they have aired on Channel 4’s on-demand service All4. Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood will be returning to their places on the judging panel, making sure only the very best bakers make it through to the next round each week. Of course Prue will be setting her highly complicated technical challenges to keep bakers on their toes, while Paul will be casting his critical eye over each bake... but will anyone be rewarded for their efforts with the famous ‘Hollywood Handshake’? According to Paul, the standard is particularly high this

year: “It’s the highest I’ve ever encountered, it’s incredible,” he said. Prue also admitted this year’s contestants are something special: “Just count the handshakes! The youngest baker was 19 and the oldest, nearly 70. They have to be fantastic bakers, but they’re also so interesting and nice. You really want to be friends with them.” Noel Fielding will be returning to his role as presenter, along with his new sidekick, Matt Lucas. The pair were an instant hit with fans thanks to their hilarious sketches at the start of the show, along with their comedy banter inside the tent. We’re hoping for a lot more laughs this year. Speaking of his on-screen chemistry with Noel, Matt told Lorraine earlier this year: “I just have fun and I love working with Noel. He’s so funny.”

Foods the world’s oldest people swear by Since the legend of the holy grail, we’ve been searching for the secrets to eternal life. But what are the secrets that the world’s oldest people swear by? Fish and chips once a week 109-year-old John Tinniswood, the oldest man in the UK, attributed his long life to a ‘chippy tea’ once a week. Verdict: Ultimately the fish would be providing essential fats as well as omega 3 fatty acids which is related to lower risk of cardiovascular disease. Chips would add to the enjoyment of the meal, and rightly so. This could have worked in his favour. There are lots of health benefits to eating fish. Although fish and chips can be high in fat, treating yourself once in a while is perfectly fine. Porridge Jessie Gallan was Scotland’s oldest woman until 2015 when she died at the grand old age of 109. Before her death, Jessie credited her long life with “eating porridge and staying away from men.” Verdict: Porridge would provide fibre which is an added bonus in your diet and recommended. Studies suggest that increasing your dietary fibre intake, especially cereal fibre - is

Kingpins come to Torrevieja Champion bowlers from all over the world are flocking to Torrevieja this week for the 9th International Open of ten pin bowling which takes place in the Ozone from September 19th to 24th. There are two tournaments running side by side – the International Open d the 1st annual Senior Open, for bowlers over 50 with a combimed prize fund of over €18,000. Tournament Director Jarmo E Peltonen revealed that some late entries are still being taken for both tournaments – currently there are around 80 participants in the International Open and around 40 in the Senior Open. Jarmo started the organising club, Euro Bowling Torrevieja, back in 2006 and in fact, the club celebrates its 15th anniversary just before this year’s tournament grand final. The year after the club was founded, the Torrevieja club fielded a team in the Spanish National League and from 2015 to 2018 they went on to win the premiership category in the nationals. It is testament to the club and tournament organisers that the Torrevieja International Open has become an important international fixture with bowlers visiting from all over the world to take part. Previous champs include Tore Torgersen from Norway, three times

World Champion, Spanish International player Melvin Ocando, the famous Finnish bowler Sami Konsteri and pro USA tour bowler Ildemaro Ruiz from Venezuela. Other famous names include young Finns Teemu Putkisto and Juuso Rikkola and Belgium’s Mats Maggi, a well known bowler on the European circuit and the creator of the international bowling tournament website, Bowl4u.com. The International Open is being held in association with Torrevieja town hall, the Spanish Bowling Federation, the Association of Spanish Bowling Clubs (AECB) and Ozone. It is open to all bowlers with a federation licence but if you don’t currently have a licence

and would like to participate, don’t worry as this can be arranged. If you would just like to see the big name bowlers in action, the entire event will be live streamed on YouTube (just search for Bowling Torrevieja Open and you should find the correct link) starting from this Friday morning right up to the grand final. If you would like to find out more about signing up for the Open, or to join Euro Bowling Torrevieja (they have a local league on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6.30pm at Ozone), simply message them through their Facebook page or get in touch with Chairman Jarmo on 626751585.

associated with a reduced risk of dying from cardiovascular disease and all cancers. Olive Oil Jeanne Calment, who died in 1997 at the unbelievable age of 122, credited olive oil, port and chocolate as the secrets to living longer. Verdict: It seems Jeanne’s diet consisted of what we know as a Mediterranean eating pattern. Olive oil is the main source of fat in the Mediterranean diet. Olive oil is high in healthy fats as well as having great antioxidant properties. People who consume this diet appear to have a higher life expectancy, including a lower chance of dying from cardiovascular diseases. Port From Arles, France, Jeanne

remembered meeting Vincent Van Gogh in 1888. Fortified Port wine was Jeanne’s tipple of choice: but could Port be what flows from the fountain of youth? Verdict: The grapes used in the production of port wine are rich in resveratrol, a polyphenol found in some plants and fruits, acting as an antioxidant. In addition, resveratrol has antiinflammatory properties, so they help prevent several heart and autoimmune diseases. Chocolate 122 years is an awfully long time to go without chocolate, so we’re not surprised this made it into Jeanne’s top three. Verdict: When it comes to chocolate - life is about balance, and chocolate serves as a dopamine release and brings food enjoyment and freedom.

Crevillente crypto mine shut down Guardia Civil have arrested two men, aged 30 and 53, in Crevillente as the alleged perpetrators of electricity fraud worth in the region of €25,000. Officers discovered a cryptocurrency ‘mine’ hidden in an annex at the Crevillente property with a huge number of processors running 24/7 to mine for crypto. Officers from the research area began an investigation last June to find out what was behind the excessive consumption of electricity – connected by means of an illegal hook up – at

a rural house in the area. During the surveillance carried out by Guardia Civil, it was found that the thermal emissions being released from the property were very high, comparable to that of an industrial warehouse at full capacity, and that it also had turbines to cool the entire interior of the house. Officers, assuming that such excessive electricity usage and heat emission are usually due to a large number of marijuana plants being grown inside, were surprised to discover what the house was really hiding.

Rather than a marijuana plantation, officers found a cryptocurrency ‘mine’ with a total of 8 processors, 100 graphics cards, computers, and sophisticated cooling and smoke extraction equipment. Given the complexity of the setup, specialists from the technological department of the Judicial Police of Alicante HQ visited the house to analyze the scene. Two men were subsequently arrested and have appeared in court in Elche before being released with charges.

my other colleagues to be blamed for the discrepancies.

At my parents’ I work for a small business, where the person in charge seems to think he is God. The staff are treated very badly, and we are constantly being told that we are all lucky to have our jobs in the present situation. In return for this we are expected to work over for no extra money. Other work colleagues feel the same about this person, but no one will

report his behaviour to the business owner. The owner lives in the UK, and completely relies on the manager, particularly since Covid when it has been impossible to get over to Spain. We are also aware that there are some improprieties in the accounting, and we think the Manager is cooking the books. My job is administration, and I can see how easy it would be for me, and one or two of

If you delay in reporting these issues, you may come to regret it if the Manager gets in first and blames someone else, particularly if as you say, it could look as if someone else is responsible. Period disruption linked to covid jab More than 30,000 women have now come forward to say their periods were disrupted after getting a Covid vaccine, it has been revealed. The issues — which include an irregular menstrual cycle and painful periods — were reported as part of an on-going study. Most affected women found their menstruation returned to normal after

one cycle. Issues were linked to Pfizer, AstraZeneca or Moderna vaccines. No fertility issues were uncovered, according to an analysis of the data by Dr Victoria Male, a lecturer in reproductive immunology at Imperial College London. Writing in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), she argued more research was needed to investigate the links.

Volvo gears up to stock offering

China’s Geely Holding is in advanced discussions with banks to list its Volvo Cars unit in the coming weeks, three sources told Reuters, in what is expected to be one of Europe’s biggest initial public offerings this year. Volvo is aiming for a valuation of about $20 billion in the planned Stockholm listing, the sources said, with one saying the launch was pencilled in for the end of September. Goldman Sachs and SEB are leading the transaction, while other banks including BNP Paribas, Carnegie and HSBC are also involved in the deal, the sources added. CEO Hakan Samuelsson was asked in a recent industry press interview whether he thought the current chip shortage would dampen investor interest in the IPO. “The financial markets understand that this is something the whole industry is now experiencing. Everybody has the same struggle,” Samuelsson said. “For an investor, this is a short-term disturbance.” Samuelsson said a decision on the listing would be made “by the end of this year.” Geely, which bought Volvo from Ford Motor more than a decade ago in the biggest acquisition by a Chinese firm of a foreign car maker, sought to float shares in the Swedish brand in 2018 but then pulled the deal citing trade tensions and a downturn in automotive stocks.

Traditional automakers have fallen out of favour with investor in recent years, as Tesla has risen to be one of the world’s most valuable companies, putting the focus on electric vehicles. Many European firms have pivoted toward the electric sector, including Volvo, which aims to only make fullelectric vehicles by 2030 and owns a 49.5 percent stake in electric car maker Polestar. Valuation The Gothenburg-based company aims to secure a valuation of roughly $20 billion, one of the sources said, while another mentioned a possible range of $20 billion to $30 billion. A third source suggested a $16 billion valuation was more realistic, citing the firm’s revenue outlook. A $20 billion valuation for Volvo would be equivalent to six to seven times its earnings, a level some analysts say is high although it would put it in line with rivals Daimler and BMW. NordLB’s automotive analyst Frank Schwope estimated a valuation range of $10 billion to $15 billion. For Geely founder Li Shufu, who bought Volvo for $1.8 billion, the listing is a milestone on the road toward transportion of the future, where cars are part of an electrified network of mobility services generating data and business opportunities. A slew of startups have tapped into the investor frenzy for EVs this year.

Lowemissions car-buying grants A grant system to help with the costs of buying low-emissions cars has been renewed, and all bar five regional governments in Spain have released details. Known as the Plan Moves III – as it is the third time funds have been freed up for purchasing non-polluting vehicles – the scheme is managed by the individual regions. At the moment, €400 million has been set aside and split between each autonomous government – those of Spain’s 17 regions and two selfgoverning cities, Ceuta and Melilla – and, if demand spikes, could be increased to up to €800m. The Plan Moves III will run until 2023, and cash is available for cars bought from 9th April, 2021 onwards. As yet, Catalunya, Melilla, Extremadura and La Rioja have not published details of the scheme – even though the deadline for doing so was in July – but the Plan Moves III funds are still available in all these regions. In general, grants can be paid for buying either hybrid or 100% electric cars, and vary according to where the purchaser lives, whether or not they have reduced mobility, whether they are a company or an individual, and if the vehicle is to be used as a taxi or professional car-sharing transport means, such as drivers for Uber and Cabify, among others. The exact amount depends upon these data, and on the make and model chosen, along with whether or not a petrol or diesel vehicle is being traded in against it for scrap.

Typically, the sums paid are up to a maximum of about €5,000. Buyers should be aware they need to declare the full amount of their Plan Moves grants when filing their annual tax return, or ‘Declaración de la Renta’, since it counts as part of their yearly income in the same way as the earlier scrap-for-cash ‘Plan PIVE’ did. The Business Association for Development and Promotion of Electrical Mobility (AEDIVE), in conjunction with the digital firm Switch, have created an online calculator where anyone seeking to buy a low-emissions or emissions-free vehicle can work out approximately how much funding they may receive, to help them budget.

Your documents on your Mobile dGT Functions In recent weeks, we have mentioned the Mi DGT app, a mobile phone application which is the first step to providing documentation in digital form, allowing you to carry your driving licence and vehicle logbook on your mobile. The MiDGT app allows you to leave your licence at home as it serves as a replacement for the official document. In addition, the app sends notices and news direct to your mobile device, all from the official source. The app provides the opportunity to have a digital version of your photocard, and also gives you the opportunity to check your points, the data of the vehicles owned, environmental signs, ITV date, and to receive notifications regarding these data. The application is only the first stage of the development of the digital platform. During a second stage, the possibility of carrying out the procedures that are carried out at

trafico offices or via the Internet, such as payment of fees to carry out procedures, notice and payment of fines, obtaining a vehicle report, the identification of the driver in case of sanction, determination of the habitual driver and the consultation of the exam notes, will all be included. In the third phase, the registration and transfer (secondhand sale) of vehicles through MiDGT will be included. In the future, the DGT wants to study how to send users only the messages that are relevant to them. Thus, for example, notifying

you of when your licence is due to expire, as well as relevant information based on your location - for example, where the nearest ITV or traffic department is located. A word of warning, however. The app itself is so secure it is not the easiest thing to register for. There are various ways you can access the app although a little knowledge of Spanish will prove useful, or use an online translator to register via the dgt.es website first.

Beware of imitations! Other applications with similar functions are advertised in the app stores. They are generally websites that request user data - the DGT app does not request this - and, with them, they consult the DGT website to provide that data to their user. These unofficial apps have two disadvantages: first, that they can be monetised by introducing advertising to the user and the second, and more serious, is that the user is giving them their data that could be used for other purposes. To ensure that the downloaded application is the official one, always look for the “MiDGT” logo and make sure that the developer is the DGT itself. This will prevent advertising and ensure that your data is held by the Administration.

online

The Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) has an Electronic Office, a website designed to facilitate all kinds of traffic related functions without the need for making an appointment or going to your local trafico office. As previously featured, the MiDGT app has also been operational, the application that allows you to carry all the information related to your driving licence and to your vehicle on your mobile. If the health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated anything, it is that the digital world has radically changed our lives. In many cases, it is not even necessary to physically go to work, since a computer and Internet connection means we can carry out these tasks from home. Public administrations are also assuming this virtual reality and are digitizing many of their processes. This is the case of the Electronic Office. According to Miguel Martín, IT manager of the DGT, this new tool has a triple objective: “First, to better organise the information on the procedures that a citizen can carry out digitally with the DGT” ; second, “offer personalised information and services through the MiDGT section”, and third, “improve accessibility and usability, making the user experience more pleasant”. More and more services Since December 2019, the page has registered more than 100 million visits and more than 400 million pages have been consulted. Almost 30 million

procedures have also been carried out and more than a million fines have been paid online. Martín ensures that, on a normal day, 100,000 visits are reached, 5,000 of which are to the MiDGT section - a personal access area, with a password, with our personalised information. In the future, services will be expanded so that “any procedure can be carried out digitally and easily,” says Miguel Martín, who stresses that the objective is that, between this year and next, “practically all of our procedures ” will not require face-to-face protocols, especially “ those with the highest volume and impact”. What does it offer? In the Electronic Office, we can find everything related to the driving licence and our vehicle: request a special authorisation to drive or a duplicate licence, pay a fine or consult important information related to the DGT, among others. Accessible in all the official Spanish languages (Spanish, Catalan, Basque and Galician), the site also has a translation function for English, German and French, this page offers clear information and simple to use services. According to Martín, with the new design and more languages, the DGT wanted to anticipate and adapt to the needs of the user. The DGT´s electronic office is available at: https://sede.dgt.gob.es/es/

Former Wigan and Wales forward Ben Flower has announced his retirement, aged 33. The Cardiff-born prop won 17 caps, captained his country against England in 2009 and played for Wales in the 2011 Four Nations and 2013 World Cup. Flower made 222 Super League appearances, 168 of them with Wigan, where he won three Grand Finals and a Challenge Cup, although he will be best remembered as the first player to be sent off in a Grand Final. He was given a six-month ban for a hit on stand-off Lance Hohaia in the early stages of Wigan’s defeat by St Helens in the 2014 title decider and later expressed his regret, saying: “I hated myself for what I did.”

Flower began his rugby league career with Crusaders in 2008 and ended it with Leigh but made only one substitute appearance for them since April due to injury. Flower said on social media: “It’s finally my time to call it a day in rugby league and to say it’s been a blast is an understatement. For all the injuries and knocks it’s all been worth it. “As a kid, you never think this day will come when you become a professional, but unfortunately it does.” Wales Rugby League chairman Brian Juliff said: “Everyone at Wales Rugby League would like to thank Ben for all his hard work at community, club and international level throughout his career.”

Former New Zealand all-rounder Chris Cairns says he is “facing possibly the greatest challenge” of his life after being left paralysed from a spinal stroke during a heart operation. The 51-year-old needed emergency surgery at a hospital in Sydney during August and was briefly on life support. “Just over six weeks ago, I suffered a type A aortic dissection, which essentially means there’s a tear in one of the major arteries of the heart,” Cairns said in a video on social media. “I had several surgeries and grafts and very thankfully the specialists were able to save the heart itself. “One of the complications that arose was a spinal stroke, which in itself will provide me with possibly the greatest

challenge I’ve ever faced in rehab going forward. “Huge thanks to the team here at Canberra Hospital, to St Vincent’s in Sydney, the surgeons, the doctors, the nurses, the specialists - you saved my life.” Cairns, who was left unable to use his legs after suffering the spinal stroke, added: “A long road ahead, but I’m grateful to be here.” Considered one of the best allrounders of his generation, Cairns played 62 Tests, 215 one-day internationals and two Twenty20s for New Zealand between 1989 and 2006 before becoming a television pundit. His father Lance also represented New Zealand between 1974 and 1988.

TALeS FroM THe ToP FLiGHT n cHris darwen chris@costablancapeople.com

Football woke up to some sad news on Sunday morning following the death of Jimmy Greaves, the former fo o t b a l l e r- t u r n e d - b ro a d c a s te r. As someone, as a child, who was inspired by Greaves’ wit and tonguein-cheek, “let’s not take all this so seriously” delivery on TV, his passing immediately takes me back to a time when football was just a little more fun and we didn’t take everything as seriously as we do today. Whilst I am quietly confident England’s finest ever goalscorer never read Tales, I would like to think he would have approved of the sentiment behind it. And with that, this one is for the late, great Jimmy Greaves. Sadly for Spurs, it wasn’t really one for the occasion. Even the great Greavsie would have struggled to get on their scoresheet given the lack of chances created by the home side against Chelsea. Mind you, having played for both, Greaves might have fancied playing off Lukaku. Chelsea won 3-0 and they were good for it. That’s back to back 3-0 defeats for Tottenham. Harry Kane to sign a new contract? Not likely. Things that were 100% going to happen at the Athletics Stadium on Sunday. Number one: Ronaldo was going to score. Number two: So was Jesse Lingard. Number three: David de Gea, having never saved a penalty in his life was always going to break the heart of Mark Noble, West Ham through and through. Did we not learn anything from sending on the two subs to take penalties in the Euro 2020 Final? Yes, yes - it’s great in theory but surely the evidence now suggests it is not as easy as just stripping off, stepping up and banging it home. Goalies, sure throw them on. Their entire game is based around keeping the ball out of the net. How many times does Noble take a penalty per match? Exactly.

United, yet again, came from behind away from home to win a Premier League match - and even with the VAR refusing to award them two pretty clear and obvious penalties that the referee, clearly keen to keep the match alive, chose not to award. Mind you, I still need convincing that West Ham shouldn’t have had one in the first half as well - that would have finished Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s week off well. United in a title race? Let’s see how good they are against a top team before we answer that, shall we? I think we can assume that Peppy G won’t be attending any fan functions in the near future. Guardiola urged Man City fans to turn out in number for the Southampton match - a plea that had nothing to do with the unsold tickets at the Emptyhad for the midweek nine-goal thriller with RB Leipzig in the Champions League, alright? It is hard for these City fans nowadays - all these trips to Wembley, all these midweek clashes going deep (but not quite deep enough, eh?) in the Champions League etc. It all adds up and following a top-level club is quite the investment in the modern game. Are we reaching a point where the group stages of the European competition is becoming a little bit Carabao Cup to some fans? Quite possibly. Now, if only someone could come up with a new idea that might get the fans so excited they could turn out once in a while. Lower ticket prices? Don’t be silly - I think the moneymen are more focused on finding a clever way to restart the ESL thing. Mind you, City were advertising very cheap tickets on a student discount site last week in the hope to get the house full in the future. Those that did turn out to watch the Southampton game will have left disappointed - nine goals in midweek and barely the sight of one at the weekend. Don’t forget, Pep and the boys were ‘tired’ and only had ‘ten minutes to prepare’ whereas Hassenhuttl, virtue of just not being as damn good as City, had the luxury of a whole week.

The Saints earned their point manfully and could well have taken all three back to the South Coast had VAR not suggested a second looksie at Kyle Walker’s tackle which had led to a penalty and a red card for the England international. Was it a penalty and a red? No, probably not. But was it a clear and obvious error? Equally, no sir - and Southampton should have been allowed to take their penalty and see Pep combust thoroughly on the sidelines. Sean Dyche, fresh with a new contract ensuring 442 and direct aerial bombardment will the menu del dia for at least the next four years on Turf Moor, also had a bit of a VAR gripe following their loss to Arsenal. The Gunners led through Martin Odegaard’s curling free-kick when it looked like Aaron Ramsdale had conceded a penalty clipping Vydra in the area - following a delightfully threaded through-ball by £50m ballplaying defender Ben White. The video showed that Ramsdale, as he had gently pointed out, had touched the ball first - Dyche admitted he had seen there was a touch and that “in theory, it doesn’t get given” in the tone of a man not completely believing what he is saying and actually thinking that the penalty should have very much been given. Fans often sing “can we play you every week” and it would be no great surprise to learn that Sadio Mane was humming the tune at Anfield after he scored against Crystal Palace for the ninth consecutive match. Nobody else has ever scored that many goals against one team in a row in the Premier League (and I haven’t been bothered to check whether such a record existed before football started in 1992). It was also Mane’s 100th Liverpool strike in all competitions. Patrick Vieira was mainly disappointed that all three Liverpool goals came from set-pieces, though that sweeping statement would do an injustice to the quality of Salah and Keita’s strikes. Right now, there appear to be more leaks at Newcastle than in a

sieve. Ahead of their match against Leeds, we learned that coach Graeme Jones had fallen out with Dwight Gayle. The fans still would like Steve Bruce to pack up and go but against all odds, the team took a point from Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds thanks to Saint Max scoring a lovely little equaliser. Rumours suggest the mole is…. Rebekah Vardy. No, I am joking, People are suggesting it is Steve Bruce himself. Everton could have kept pace with the early table-toppers had they got a win at Villa Park but it was a stunning second-half performance from the Villa that led to them winning 3-0. Leon Bailey only needed to be on the pitch 20 minutes to earn a place in the hearts of the Holte End, larruping one past Begovic and pulling his thigh in the process. Not many would have had money on Brighton being higher than City in the table after five matches. But, there you go. Football is a funny old game, someone once said. Jamie Vardy might have got his 150th Leicester goal but it was in a losing cause. Brighton won 2-1 and will do well to continue getting points in the bag ahead of playing some of the bigger sides in the Premier League very soon. I’m not saying they are in a false position, but they’ve had a somewhat friendly start to the season fixtureswise. Norwich will have looked at their tough start and possibly thought that a home match versus Watford was the moment for their season to get going. Unfortunately, nobody told Watford who Sarr their way to a 3-1 win courtesy of a brace from, ahem, Sarr. Thomas Frank made quite a salient point when challenged on Brentford’s perceived timewasting in the second half of their 2-0 win over Wolves. “What would he do if he was a newly promoted team with a tenth of the budget, just a bus stop in Hounslow and down to ten men? If I was him, I’d be looking at the first half”. It’s a fair point well made - Brentford is little more than a bus stop in Hounslow and they were very, very good in the first half.

elche CF take 4 from 6 Elche CF take 4 points from a possible 6 this week, consolidating their mid table position.

On Monday evening Elche CF travelled to the suburbs of Madrid to face Getafe. Both teams were looking for their first win of the season, but only one would emerge victorious. The last few days of the transfer and loan window has been frenetic for Elche. With all the new, exciting and very promising additions the team has to begin the process of learning to play together all over again. Neitherthe-less, they were the superior side, looking strong and confident in the Coliseum, the home ground of their opponents. Elche saw less of the ball and had 25% less passes, but they also had the all important and only goal of the 90 minutes. Debuting substitute Lucas Perez hit the back of the net on

the 69th minute.

After a few days rest, the Franjiverdes were back on their home turf on Saturday night. Unfortunately neither the turf nor the team put in their best performance, but they were facing a team which had been forbidden to fail by their manager. Valencia based Levante, having gone 12 games without a victory, were eager for the points. Elche CF were equally eager to build on their recent victory and to continue adjusting to their new players. The game failed to live up to the

expectation and was lacking in both atmosphere and sparkle. The first half Elche goal by Lucas Perez was against the run of play. Dario Benedetto, on loan from Marseille, missed kicked his shot which luckily fell to the feet of Perez, who crossed it to find the far corner and the back of the net. Levante equalled in the 55th minute following a catastrophic failure by Gonzalo Verdu to hold onto the ball. Levante’s Jose Morales took it from him with ease and charged towards the goal, drawing Kiko Casillas from his line, and slotting the ball past him. One point is better

than no points, and although tonight’s performance was lacklustre it left the fans with hope for the future as the team continue to gel.

The EuroTourGuide Coach is already available for booking for Elche CF’s next home fixture against Celta Vigo at the Martinez Valero on Sunday the 3rd October for a 14:00 kick off.
