Hospital staff jump ship before public reversion ribera Salud, the company managing the operation of torrevieja hospital since it opened its doors in 2006, revealed that 17 heads of service have handed in their notice and intend to leave before the public health service takes control of the hospital. A spokesperson for ribera said, “the reversal of torrevieja University hospital concession by the department

of health and Public health is already having serious consequences at the centre. Up to 17 heads of service have communicated to the Management their intention to cease their position due to the change in management and leave the hospital at a time of great uncertainty for all professionals.” in what is being described as a “talent drain”, the heads of services of

Cardiology, thoracic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, electrophysiology, hematology, hemodynamics, neurophysiology, Pediatrics, radiodiagnosis, interventional radiology, rehabilitation, Uhd, emergencies and Urology have handed in their notice. Also set to resign their positions are the medical coordinators of three of the busiest local health centres At a time where there

is already a shortage of doctors, many are concerned about the impact of the current situation for the future of the hospital. the reasons given by staff for their departure are diverse but the one common denominator is the uncertainty and lack of information about what will happen to their jobs in the coming months. in just two weeks

the management of the hospital will be handed over from ribera to the Ministry of health and many health professionals have voiced their concerns over the public regime in terms of health workers in the public sector, saying that they will have no chance of professional development. ribera said it expects Continued on page 3

Continued on page 3 more staff to leave as the date for the changeover approaches. ribera Salud had the contract to run the hospital for 15 years – from mid October 2006 to October 2021. the contract was not renewed – a decision which shocked and disappointed staff and the public. in fact, in the run up to the decision to revert the hospital to the health ministry, staff staged weekly protests outside the doors of A&e to voice their discontent. A citizens’ action group called Plataforma Sanidad excelente was formed back in February as a direct response to the hospital situation. When the situation at ribera hospital (a hospital in Alzira, Valencia which reverted from ribera management to public health management and descended into chaos with staff haemorrhages and waiting lists spiralling out of control) began to unfold, campaigners decided to form the group to try to stop the same thing happening in torrevieja. While their initial campaign was unsuccessful, the group remains active. in response to the recent staff resignations, the group expressed its regret that torrevieja is losing the best thoracic surgeons in Spain. thoracic surgeons Juan Manuel Corcoles Padilla and Krzysztof Kurowski are leaving torrevieja hospital after 15 years. the pair is known as the best thoracic surgery team in the country and Plataforma Sanidad excelente (PSe) say that the damage this will cause to the service being offered at the hospital is incalculable. A spokesperson for PSe said, “the reversal of the health department 22, which includes torrevieja hospital, is causing the loss of irreplaceable medical talent and expertise. this leads to a

collapse in the quality of care for the citizens who live in the ten municipalities covered by health department 22, and will cause pain and death in the population. the first and last person responsible for this unspeakable scandal is the autonomous president Ximo Puig, who apparently is promoting and working to sink public health on the Vega baja coast.” President of the platform Mamen Mateo, said “We want to thank the best thoracic surgery team in Spain that is forced to leave torrevieja after giving their best years of service to the patients of the 10 municipalities that make up health department 22 torrevieja. We have been warning you for two years. the hands of the President Ximo Puig in the torrevieja hospital will only serve to sink it and to expel the talent of doctors and health workers that we have here. the damage to sanitary quality has already been done. the municipalities of torrevieja’s health department 22 are being looted in the public health services while what most concerns some is to change the name of the hospital.” According to the Sindicadura de Comptes, (the external independent body which oversees the financial administration of the Valencian Community), torrevieja health department (which up until now is managed by ribera Salud, a private company) is 30% more efficient than other public hospitals in the Valencian Community – this directly translates into a €45 million euro annual saving for the public purse. the original management contract required that ribera Salud invested €80m in torrevieja health department over the 15 year term. however, accounts indicate that by July 2020, it had already invested over €117m.

in terms of future investment, ribera Salud had announced plans for a 20212026 investment project in local health infrastructure, valued at €40m. this included projects such as €1m for the improvement of Guardamar health centre, investment in the latest state of the art machinery and diagnostic equipment and plans to construct a €6m health centre for Orihuela Costa to serve the growing population there. Projects which ribera has now been forced to shelve.

Farewell Sharon! it was an emotional week at the Costa blanca People as we bade farewell to our colleague and long time friend Sharon Jones. Sharon has worked at the newspaper for over fifteen years and is universally loved by her colleagues, friends and clients. Sharon’s friendly nature and her supreme organisational skills will be sorely missed as she takes early retirement this year. We will always cherish the great times we have had working with Sharon – from not wearing her glasses (and instead, squinting at a page held at arms’ length) and all the girls in the office admiring her fabulous nail art and impeccable style. Always sunny and smiling, and always ready to help whenever asked, Sharon has been an incredible

asset to the team. Sharon also turned 60 this week so it was a double celebration and we wish her - the most glamorous, good natured and lovable retiree we

know - all the very best for the future as she enjoys some very well deserved r&r with her husband bernie.

Children’s activity program for Orihuela Costa Mar ezcurra, Councillor for Culture and Youth, has outlined the details for the new Autumn and Winter children’s program, which will run until the end of the year on the Orihuela Costa. “After the success experienced with the first children’s program, which we organised before the summer holidays at the Alameda del Mar Civic Centre, we are continuing with the activities. We have programmed a new calendar of children’s activities that will take place on tuesday and thursday afternoons in

the CeiP Los dolses, located in Playa Flamenca”, announced the Councillor. this is a program that is very similar to the one that is being developed quarterly at the María Moliner Library in Orihuela and will include workshops, storytelling, theatre and crafts as well as other fun-focused activities. “this cultural program dedicated to children begins on the first tuesday in October, that is, on 5th October at 6:00pm with a storyteller and will continue

every tuesday and thursday without interruption until the Christmas holidays,” Mar ezcurra explained. the workshops, storytellers and theatre productions have been prepared to cater for children who speak various languages, in addition to Spanish. the activities are totally free and they can be accessed by all boys and girls who wish to take part – regardless of which school they actually attend. the activities are not only for CeiP Los dolses pupils but all children.

Batman goes to Benidorm Worst is over, but the caped crusader is 82 years in this year, but has not yet retired from his full-time job of saving the world – or from travelling it! in batman: the World, the legend from Gotham City embarks on 14 different adventures in the past and present. As well as time-travelling, batman goes continenthopping, starting out in the USA with his episode narrated and depicted by artists brian Azzarello and Lee bermejo who, like all the different illustrators and comic-strip writers involved, come from the same country as they show their hero in. After the USA, batman goes to France, then comes to Spain, where part of his globe-trotting itinerary brings him to the Costa blanca’s holiday capital of benidorm. here can be seen clambering around on top of one of the Osborne bulls by the roadside. You can follow for yourself the adventures of bruce Wayne in this iconic city in the newlyreleased 184-page dC Comics book, a joint creation by artists and teams from all over the planet. in each country, the caped tourist is not known to the people he meets on the street – in real life, of course, he is very famous in practically every nation on earth, but the idea is to show how batman interacts with local society, culture, landscape and habits, and how

Coronavirus is here to stay Spain will not have to wait for herd immunity before it can leave the coronavirus pandemic behind. With four out of every five citizens fully vaccinated, and a coverage level of 95 percent among the vulnerable population, the country is entering a new stage in which learning to live with the virus will become a part of everyday life. new, more-contagious variants of the virus and the percentage of the population that has not been vaccinated – 5.2 million under-12s in Spain, for whom no vaccine has yet been approved, and 4.6 million people above that age who are yet to receive a single dose – have led experts to believe that it will be impossible to completely eradicate the coronavirus. there will continue

these react to him. examples include an encounter with Catwoman in the Musée du Louvre in Paris, the warped ‘environmentallyfriendly’ intentions of the Joker in the bavarian Alpes, Panda Girl standing in for robin in China, and a black-and-white depiction of the scenery in Japan. Some might wonder why, on a sole visit to Spain, of all the

beautiful heritage and nature and huge, vibrant cities on the western Mediterranean, batman would choose benidorm – but as his trip is merely about a relaxing beach break (even though it does not work out that way), this Alicante-province coastal town is a fitting option; also, benidorm does have ‘pockets’ of ‘real Spain’ within it, especially in its historic quarter.

Sunny October forecast by AEMET the Spanish weather agency AeMet has declared that October will be a ‘summer of San Miguel’ which is the Spanish equivalent of what the british and irish term an ‘indian summer’ with temperatures set to rise slightly as we start the month. According to the State Meteorological Agency, AeMet forecasts that these last days of September and the beginning of October will be marked by stable and sunny weather, as well as by a slight and temporary recovery of temperatures, what they describe as a ‘Summer of San Miguel’. Over the weekend we saw temperatures in the high twenties with the mercury

hitting 30 degrees on Sunday across the southern Costa blanca. this week those temperatures will remain at 27 to 28 degrees and according to the forecast the warm weather is set to continue well into midOctober.

the summer of San Miguel is so called because it is often

experience around 29th September the Patron Saints day for San Miguel. Usually, the thermometer begins to drop when September rolls around and the autumn season begins. however, in the weeks following 29th September the temperatures rise again as if summer were returning. it is as if the summer has one farewell fling to say goodbye until the following year. Unfortunately, this little summer is nothing more than an annual atmospheric episode and although during these dates the temperatures rise to stay for a few weeks, they will fall again and autumn will be well and truly upon us.

to celebrate the easing of pandemic restrictions the teatro Circo in Orihuela is hosting a special Performing Arts Festival from 8th October. the program includes shows with free admission, including a circus, children’s shows, dance and adult performances. the program begins at 9pm, with “Confort”, an acrobatic circus show centred around a lonely man, with the only company on the television and what he sees from his window and in front of the attentive

gaze of two witnesses who have come from another reality. he goes through a roller coaster of emotions, reminding us, between the laughter, of the insane situations experienced during confinement. On Sunday 10th October, at 6pm, the little ones will be able to enjoy the children’s play ‘the collector of happy moments’; a work that aims to teach children to save moments of happiness for the rest of their lives. On Saturday, 23rd October, at 8:30pm, is the play ‘Federico.

Untitled feature’. based around the poet Federico García Lorca, who 82 years after his murder, decides to speak: “Since you did not give me a grave, lend me a stage to tell you everything.” Finally, on Saturday, 6th november, at 8.30pm, it will be the turn of dance with the show “Clandestino”, a flashback that returns to the birth of a new modernity. this is a place where the lines are blurred and where everything that is not said is expressed through the language of dance.

to be outbreaks and vaccinated people will be among those infected, but the circulation of the pathogen will slow and the serious cases will fall until Covid-19 becomes just another infectious disease, like the flu is now. Amós García, the president of the Spanish Vaccinology Association (AeV), explains that the virus “is here to stay and we will get used to living with it. but we have to impede its circulation and avoid dramatic overloading of hospitals and deaths. We have the tool to see it become a mild pathology, and that tool is the vaccines.” While countries such as China or new Zealand have opted for a zero-tolerance policy toward the virus, an approach that has seen whole cities confined once a small group of cases appears,

europe has chosen a gradual approach where restrictions are toughened and then relaxed according to each wave. the waves seen across the continent this summer, the experts and public officials agree, should be the last – barring, that is, any unexpected developments. there may, however, still be some minor spikes. One of the data points that is leading to this hopeful outlook in Spain is the accelerating fall in hospitalisations and new admissions in the country’s intensive care units (iCUs). According to the latest health Ministry reports cases and hospitalisations have dropped to a low not seen since June, although at that point not even half of the population had been vaccinated.

Young adults flood property market Young adults are proving to be the main market for rented property, outnumbering other, older age groups, according to recent figures. despite high unemployment among the under-35s and, in particular, the under-30s, with low wages and job insecurity rife in this age group, property owners looking for tenants are more likely to find them among this group of people than any other. the rental market has dramatically grown since the start of the pandemic – in the first six months, it completely stagnated, but analysts reveal it is now more buoyant than even before the Covid crisis began. in addition, banks are tending to offer more flexible conditions for first-time buyers, mindful of the fact that unless young adults are able to get a foothold on the property ladder before around age 35, they may never do so as it would mean they were still paying off their mortgages long after retirement. And although reasons for renting are many and varied, a key motive for becoming a tenant rather than buying a home is to ‘get settled’ and

become used to independent living and making one’s wages stretch before committing to the long haul. this said, a significant minority of young adults aged 18 to 35 believe buying a home is the best option and one they aspire to. According to a recent survey, 37 percent of this age group considers renting to be ‘dead money’, whilst 40 percent think home

ownership is security for the future and 48 percent believes it to be a sound long-term investment. but banks still, mostly, want a 20 percent deposit for homebuying – although there are exceptions, the overwhelming majority will only lend up to 80 percent of the lesser sum between the market price and the value, and fees on top for buying and for setting up a mortgage come in at around 12.5 percent on top of the sale

price. it is the near-impossibility of saving up for such a hefty deposit that is preventing firsttime buyers from getting onto the property ladder – not, as was the case until around 2007 or 2008, the actual price of homes for sale. At present, residential property averages around 37 percent below the peak market prices seen during the housing boom. For those able to amass the deposit, mortgages continue to work out cheaper than renting – research carried out by infoJobs reveals that the average tenant spends 41 percent of their monthly salary on rent, and would take six years to save up 20 percent of the value of a home plus legal and admin fees, enabling them to borrow enough to buy a property of their own. Property market analysts say a joint effort between the estate agency network and the national government is needed to make home ownership and rental affordable and accessible for young adults, given that two in five of the under-35s still live with their parents.

Whether you’re buying or selling a property in Spain, it can be a little confusing as to who pays what regarding legal costs. here’s a brief guide of what you’ll be expected to pay, based on a resale property within the Valencian Community. Costs paid for by the BUYER: 1. Lawyers Fee 2. 10% Property transfer tax Of the Agreed Purchase Price 3. notary & Land registry Fees Costs paid for by the VENDOR: 1. real estate Agents Fee 2. Plusvalia. (this is a charge made by your local town hall) 3. 2 Certificates; habitation (2nd occupancy) & energy

4. 3% non-residency retention (Only if you are not a fiscal resident of Spain) the yearly Suma bill (council tax) will be divided appropriately between buyer and vendor, depending on what month of the year the property sale is completed. the above are all regular fees associated with any house purchase/sale, whatever the value may be. As a buyer it is imperative you use a Lawyer, however as a vendor it is not so important. Your real estate Agent should prepare your paperwork ready for the completion of your sale at no extra cost to you. if you’re selling your property as a non-resident, you will need a Lawyer or fiscal representative to claim your 3% back for you.

Pensions Black Hole there are two major causes of the black hole in final-salary pension schemes, experts agree. the first is relatively simple - people are living for longer. that makes pensions more expensive for companies because they are paying pensioners for longer. the second major problem is the uncertain economic outlook. Many companies with final salary pensions have huge deficits – companies such as british telecom, which has a pension deficit of £6.3 billion. Companies can be vulnerable to these deficits and so can their pension schemes. they are the legacy of expensive “final salary” pensions that were once popular but have now mostly been phased out.

if you have a “final salary scheme” you can request a cash equivalent transfer value in order to secure your pension pot. Final salary pension transfer values are unlikely ever to be this high again, as they have been artificially boosted by the eagerness of scheme owners to offload their members. Moreover, you won’t have to worry anymore about the fund’s ability to pay your pension throughout your retirement. if you are daunted by the bureaucracy and would like help and advice as to whether going down this route is right for you, then help is on hand. Our team of advisers here at Seagate have a wealth of knowledge and would be only too happy to assist you.

Children and wheelchair users among those rescued from migrant boats three boats made land along the southern Alicante coastline in one day last week – two in torrevieja and one in Santa Pola. the people on board told red Cross rescue workers that they had been adrift at sea for three days. those rescued, of Algerian origin, included children and people with physical disabilities. the total people on board the three boats numbered 42, bringing the total immigrants arriving by sea to the Alicante province in two days to 137. the first boat was intercepted on Wednesday morning with sixteen people on board. the vessel was spotted off shore between torrevieja and Murcia and according to occupants, they had been adrift for days. red Cross sources confirmed that these people were successfully rescued by the Salvamar Mirfak Maritime rescue boat at around 3.30 pm and that ten men, four women and two minors were on board. two other boats were located more than an hour later at sea off torrevieja and Santa Pola with another 26 people on board, fifteen in the first and eleven in the second. the rescue of the first was carried out by the same Maritime rescue boat, while the Guardia Civil took charge of the other. both were sighted around 5:10 p.m. the occupants of the three

boats were transferred to the port of Alicante, where the red Cross administered treatment in a purpose built tent. health workers also gave each of the arrivals a PCr test in order to detect possible cases of covid-19. the three boats arrived just one day after a busy day for sea

rescues with six boats making land the day before with 95 people on board, including five women (two of them pregnant) and ten children the majority of these people were Algerian although some were from Syria. Photos courtesy of Cruz roja Provincia de Alicante

We need to talk about your financial adviser… By Sam Kelly dipPFS, eFA, bA (hons) Managing Partner Chorus Financial

around how much undisclosed commission could be squeezed out of the client, whether through the funds themselves, or an investment bond – i.e., a Spanish Compliant investment bond, or an international bond held under a QrOPs or SiPP. Looking back, it’s obvious i was fairly naïve when i first moved to Spain in terms of just how the financial services industry works here. i have been an investor since my teens, more than 20 years now, and have successfully managedinvestment portfolios for many years. When i made the decision to move permanently to Spain, i had no idea the journey it would take me on… beyond the 40 hour drive itself! i arrived here following a job offer from a large global financial advisory firm, well-known here in Spain, with what i perceived to be a pretty good reputation. the truth is, within my first week i was both dumbstruck and horrified by the practises i saw. the entire advice model wasn’t built around client needs and outcomes, transparency and expertise, it was built

i immediately realised i could not remain at this company, so quickly began speaking with the other major firms here in Spain. to my amazement i found that every firm i spoke with had exactly the same approach. however they dressed it up, and however well they presented their recommendations, these plans were basically all the same. A bond with a tie-in and a limited fund choice, both of which paid enormous commissions to the adviser whilst the client ultimately saw sub-optimal returns. this wasn’t the type of career i wanted. the reality is, i was already very comfortable in terms of my personal finances, and i hadn’t moved to Spain for some ‘get-richquick’ scheme. i was here because my family have always had a close connection with Spain, my mother has lived here for decades, and every time i got off the plane,

when that warm air hit me, it made me feel like i was already home. i was here to build a life and build a client base who would want to remain with me for many years, not discover a few years down the line that i had ripped them off! Sadly though, that is the case for so many of you living here, and you probably don’t even realise it yet. Spain has had no law requiring fee and commission disclosure like we had in the UK, and many firms deliberately targeted our communities for this very reason. it would not be uncommon to see a client who had been tied in for 5, 8 or 10 years to a Spanish investment bond, QrOPs, even an international SiPP, who had signed paperwork that generated as much as 13% commission for their adviser on the very first day – a combination of bond and fund commissions. With no other company out there that i wanted to join, Chorus Financial was founded. Chorus was built off a vision of ethical, high quality, transparent advice. We have worked tirelessly for many years now to educate our communities here in Spain, and on

two occasions we have won major european awards for those efforts. Hidden Cartagena this is Cartagena as you’ve never seen it before! this trip focuses on the history of this roman gem and puts you in the very capable hands of one of the city’s most renowned guides, a native who knows the ‘real Cartagena’ inside and out and all its secrets – all in english of course. the tour includes a panoramic coach tour and entry to the roman amphitheatre. in addition to the guided tour, there will be time to have lunch in one of the many restaurants in the city and time for more sight-seeing or maybe a spot of

shopping. the trip will take place this Friday, 8th October and is priced at 30e - so call begona now on 622 188 772 to snap up those last few places. Wonderful Wine Tasting begona has found an amazing ‘new’ bodega to visit for her ‘Wine tasting with a difference’ series. nestled near to novelda Casa Cesilia has been established since 1707 and is one of the area’s most renowned wineries and features the old farmhouse belonging to the Marquises of La romana. the trip includes a tour of the bodega with an english speaking expert guide who will explain the wine making process of this organically grown wine and table grape vineyards, from vine planting to bottling and then comes the best bit, the drinking of it. Visitors will be invited to sample the fabulous

range of fine wines accompanied by traditional nibbles before heading to the bodega shop where you can buy the wine and other local, traditional produce. the best way to end a visit to the winery and its facilities is undoubtedly to stay for lunch in its restaurant and enjoy a menu tailor-made for a wine lover. Cooking amidst vineyards encourages the chef to bring out the best in each dish – and of course the beautiful meal will be paired with more fine wines. the tour will take place on thursday 21st October and costs 40e including the lunch. numbers are limited, due to the current Covid restrictions, so early booking is strongly advised. Pick-ups can be arranged from Los Alcazares to Quesada at all the usual places, so to reserve your place and arrange pick up call begona on 622 188 772.

Unlicenced Extensions ‘denouncing frenzy’ Architecture firm Martinez de la Casa told the Costa blanca People this week about the an Unlicenced Extensions denouncing frenzy between residents in the rojales area. “After the famous event of a individual denouncing over 300 Unlicensed Extensions back in 2019, we have had the first case of illegal building denouncing frenzy, this time local to the area, in rojales, Alicante, in a predominantly english Community. two neighbours got upset with the Community after being denounced whilst doing small extensions at their properties and were subsequently fined by the authorities. Full of anger and seeking revenge against the local town hall and the Community, they took the courageous decision to denounce every single unlicensed extension in the province. both the denouncers and the denouncees are predominantly english, living in basically an english Community.” Avoiding being fined in Spain is essential because of the high amounts for fines. (A fine for a 20 square metre shed can easily reach 6,000€.) even worse is that a demolition order can stay within the land registry files for over 15 years (depending on the area), potentially ruining

the sale of the property. A spokesperson for Martinez de la Casa said, “Some of the residents are calling us in panic to issue retrospective Licences, but for others is too late and the authorities have already sent the owners fines and demolition orders.” “not all property owners that have done building work without a licence are entitled to obtain retrospective Licence. note the following conditions: • In the Murcia area, the conditions in order to obtain a Retrospective Licence is that the building work already done is a minimum of 4 years old. • In the Almeria area, the building work needs to be over 6 years old. • In the Alicante area, the building work needs to have been completed before August 2010 (over 11 years approximately). • No retrospective licences can be issued for extensions that have already been fined for.”

the office they check the age of the pool or extension using satellite images along with the measurements and documentation taken during an on-site visit. the Retrospective/ Certificate of Antiquity is stamped by the Official College of Architects or notarised and delivered within 10 working days, (guaranteed).

Currently the process for obtaining a Retrospective Licence is straightforward. Once confirmed, Martinez de la Casa Architects will arrange an appointment to survey the pool/extension, requiring only your nie and current title deeds. back in

the price of a Pool Restrospective Licence/ Certificate of Antiquity is 190€+iVA (229€ iVA inc) and for Extensions Licence 270€+iVA (326€ iVA inc - all extensions in the property included). Martinez de la Casa Architects is the number one company for Architectural Certification in Southern Spain, including Energy Performance Certificates (121€ inc iVA) and the number one company for Habitation/ Occupation Licences (prices depend on each town hall).

Disorientated vulture found in Bigastro

A resident of Birgastro had a considerable scare when he stumbled upon a Black Vulture in the Apatel Industrial Estate. Considered the largest ‘raptor’ in Europe these birds can reach more than a 3-metre wing span. The birds a not native but do occasional drift off course and end in Spain. The Man called the local police to report a large bird of prey wandering around and sked what he should do or who he should call. One of the agents, Efrén Pamies, thanks to his knowledge of birds and animals, was able to rescue the disoriented bird. Later it was transferred to the Wildlife Recovery Centre, where it will be assessed and released if it is fit and healthy.

Ex-Catalan leader back in Brussels after Italy arrest Exiled former Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont is back in Belgium after his arrest in Italy but said he had no idea of what his fate would be when he goes back for an extradition hearing. “I don’t know” what will happen, he told journalists as he entered the European Parliament, where he is a lawmaker. “It depends on the judges.” He confirmed he would travel back to Sardinia for his hearing there, which will weigh an extradition request from Spain. Puigdemont was arrested in Sardinia last Thursday and spent the night in prison before a brief court hearing a day later that authorised his provisional release. The 58-year-old is wanted by Madrid on charges of sedition for leading a failed Catalan bid to declare independence from Spain in October 2017, fleeing to Belgium to avoid prosecution. His lawyer in Sardinia has insisted there was no basis for his arrest, nor for his extradition. Puigdemont said his required presence in Italy “isn’t easy… because it coincides with the plenary week” of the European Parliament.“But I will go…. We are ready to face this hearing.” Despite a ban by Madrid, Catalonia’s separatist regional government under Puigdemont tried to stage an independence referendum in 2017,

which was marred by police violence. Several weeks later, the administration issued a shortlived declaration of independence, triggering a political crisis with Spain, and prompting Puigdemont and several others to flee abroad. Those who stayed behind were arrested and put on trial, with nine of them jailed for between nine and 13 years. Although they were pardoned earlier this year, Madrid still wants Puigdemont and the others to face justice over the secession bid. This is the third time he has been arrested since fleeing Spain. The first was when he arrived in Brussels, and the second in Germany in March 2018, when it took the courts nearly four months to return him to full freedom. Although he enjoyed immunity for a time after being elected an MEP in 2019, that was lifted by the European Parliament in March in a decision upheld in July by the EU’s General Court. The decision also affects former Catalan regional ministers Toni Comin and Clara Ponsati, both of whom are also wanted by Spain. However the trio are appealing the European Parliament’s decision and a final ruling by the EU court has yet to be made.

Increase in school absenteeism across Orihuela In Orihuela, the Local Police together with the Department of Education have launched a campaign to eradicate school absenteeism in the municipality. They gave information on the interventions carried out by the police over the last year to avoid or reduce the number of cases of young people of school age who were absent without reason. The Councillor for Education Antonio Sánchez explained that there have been 186 interventions in young people in the past year, which represents an increase of 40 percent compared to the 2019/2020 school year. Of these 186 cases detected, 90 were minors who received records of school absenteeism being made available to parents or institutes; in another 25 cases they were minors at social risk or unprotected; and 69 young people required continuous follow-up as they were repetitive in their absences from their school - these 69 minors alone

required up to 400 interventions by officers. The Orihuela Local Police officer, Daniel Méndez, said that the 40 percent rise in absenteeism cases is due to the coronavirus. There were numerous cases of parents who did not take their children to schools or institutes out of fear that they would catch the virus whilst there. Officer Méndez added that in the end around 80-100 minors returned to class who had not attended during the first waves of the Covid pandemic. “In class you educate yourself, you learn, you train… Don’t miss it”, reads the slogan of the new awareness campaign and Antonio Sánchez added that “where one begins to form is in class and not in the parks.” If you see minors outside of school during school hours you can help stamp out truancy by calling 092 which is the number for the Local Police.

Bruce of Algorfa asks “i have an Android Smartphone. Can you recommend any useful Apps to instal for use in Spain?” Lots that I would recommend but here are few I use. QR Code Reader – to read QR codes at restaurants and tourist locations. Fuel Flash – An App to give you price and location of fuel stations near you. This works

for fuel stations in 7 European countries including Spain and France. You can search for nearest or cheapest. Unit Converter –An App to convert most measurement from one to another. i.e. Miles to Kilometres. Yuka – Yuka is a free mobile app that allows you to scan the barcodes of food and personal care products and instantly see their impact on your health. ... Each food product is evaluated according to 3 objective criteria: nutritional quality, presence of additives and organic aspect of the product. Waze – An alternative to Google Maps. Waze displays maps with other users, hazards, traffics jams, accidents and much more. File Manager + - File Manager Plus features all of the basic file management features including copy, cut, paste, delete, rename, compress, decompress, transfer, download and bookmark. It lets you explore files not only on your devices but also across your network and cloud-based storage. Zedge - Zedge is an Android app with loads of free ringtones and wallpapers that you can download to your smartphone.

Not only is its content free, but it’s also high quality, with HD images and clear audio files. Ann of La Marina asks “i have an Android Smartphone and want to buy an updated model and maybe a different make. how can i get my important information from the old phone to the new one?” Most new Android Smartphones will prompt you to transfer information from the old phone to the new one using their particular system. Either load the App the new phone is using onto your old phone OR if this is not possible install “Phone Clone” on both phones. Tell the old phone App it is the old phone, tell the new phone it’s the new one. Provided they are on the same WiFi you can select files and folders on the old to transfer to the new phone. On the new phone if you log in to your Google account (and previously set up to backup Apps onto your Google account when using the old phone) all the Apps that were on your old phone will then be installed on your new phone. Clearly you need to be connected to WiFi to do this.

Alicante turron smashes world record Another world food record has been smashed in Spain until this week - the world record for the longest-ever turron. The standing record was 55 metres, but Alicante Gastronómica 2021 – this year’s Alicante Culinary Fair – has extended it even further. The latest street-length turrón blando was whipped up by master confectioner Roberto Picó ‘Triana’, behind the prolific turrón brand name Picó, using 270 kilos of the mixture, and was made in tribute to the legendary turrón ‘king’, José Enrique Garrigós. It is only a metre longer than the previous record-breaker, at 56 metres but is enough to replace the local industry’s own entry in the Guinness Book of Records. The new record was verified, officially, at the fair, meaning it should appear now in the 2022 edition. The ceremonious turrón-slicing event, following the measuring and documenting, was a team effort involving various top chefs in the province – Susi Díaz from La Finca, in Elche, which has one Michelin star and two Repsol ‘suns’; the Torres brothers, from the eponymous two-Michelinstarred Restaurante Hermanos

Torres; and Óscar Velasco, who has a Michelin star of his own and whose career and training mostly took place at Restaurante Santceloni – and also ‘farmfluencer’ Miquel Montoro, who describes himself as an ‘Agro-YouTuber’. All members of the public present were given a free slice, and it is likely there is still enough left over for hundreds or even thousands of people and that many were able to take home some spares, given that a typical portion of between a finger and two or three centimetres (an inch) is normally more than sufficient to sate one’s appetite until at least the next morning. Turrón, rather like panettone, plum pudding, turkey and yule logs, is not conventionally eaten in September, but the

amount consumed nationwide in the space of a day or two over Christmas is normally enough to keep manufacturers’ bills paid for the remaining 360-plus days. Whilst popular all over the country and even imported by the tonne to the USA, turrón is more typically found on sale in the Comunidad Valenciana, the part which occupies about a third of the east coast stretch – it may not be de rigueur for the holidays in Madrid, Barcelona or Andalucía, for example, but it’s almost impossible to escape for those living in the provinces of Alicante, Valencia and Castellón. That’s because it was traditionally made in the inland southern-Alicante province town of Jijona – largely, it still is, but has a much wider audience nowadays.

He lied to me and said that it was he who dumped her, but from what I have read from text messages, it was she who dumped him. She is a tarty type of woman, who is younger than he is. When I

Driving in Rain

As we head towards winter, we find ourselves in one of the two wettest times of the year threatening, and as changes in the weather provides significant risk to road users, and so our driving must be adapted at all times. Rain is one of the biggest contributors to weather related incidents. In Spain, long, dry periods are often followed by significant rainfall. In the first rainfall after a dry spell, the roads are particularly hazardous, as water falls onto the dust and surface coating on the road, creating extremely poor adhesion in places. Plus, drainage systems are not always able to cope with the immediacy of the downpour, and so roads become

flooded, particularly in dips which are designed to control the flow of water. When driving in wet weather, slow down and allow extra distance between you and the car in front. This will mean that you should allow extra time for your journey or be prepared to arrive late. It is far better to arrive late, than not at all. Movements should be slow and steady, not harsh, to ensure your tyres are able to maintain as much grip as possible, and if you think you or your vehicle are not prepared to drive in wet conditions, then don´t. Windscreen wipers and headlights will allow for better visibility, not only for you, but other road users too. Take care, take it easy and take it slow.

Children on Motorbikes

If you ride a motorbike, so long as you are old enough, have a full licence and the vehicle is correctly fitted with the appropriate equipment, you are permitted to carry a passenger. You are also permitted to carry children as passengers, but there are some restrictions to ensure their safety. Firstly, you, the rider, must be over 18. The child passenger must be over 12, although there is an exception to the rule of age, as a child of 7 or above can rise as a passenger being driven by their parent, guardian or person authorised by their parent or guardian, provided all other requirements are met. Height is also important, as if the passenger´s feet don´t reach the footrests correctly, they cannot be carried. The passenger must sit on the rearmost seat, which must be designed to carry passengers. In no case is it permitted for a passenger to sit between the driver and the handlebars of the motorcycle or moped, which also applies to bicycles incidentally. Depending on your own insurance policy, you may also need additional cover in order to carry passengers, so check our policy before you do. The passenger, like the rider, must wear an approved motorbike helmet and gloves are advised.

Distraction most frequent cause of fatal accidents Spain’s traffic authority, the DGT, recently held a campaign to make drivers aware of the most frequent cause of fatal road accidents – distractions. The campaign was part of the Operation Focus on the Road which was developed at a European level by the RoadPol (European Roads Policing Network) and was held to coincide with European Mobility Week. In 2020, according to provisional

figures for the year, distracted or inattentive driving was a factor in 31% of fatal accidents (3% higher than in 2019). These figures indicate that in 319 fatal accidents, distraction was the cause, or part cause. As part of the Focus on the Road campaign, Guardia Civil monitored interurban roads alongside local police officers as well as 216 cameras which among other things can detect if a

driver is using a phone while driving. According to the DGT, one of the main reasons for driver distraction is the use of a mobile phone while driving – use of a phone multiplies the risk of suffering an accident fourfold, and is comparable to driving under the influence of alcohol. The DGT says that a driver who talks on the phone while driving loses the ability to maintain a constant speed, does not keep a sufficient safe distance from the vehicle in front and the reaction time decreases considerably. In addition, the higher the speed, the greater the risk of a distraction causing an accident: at 120 km/h, in 3 seconds, you will travel a distance greater than that of a football field. The DGT again calls for the responsibility of citizens (drivers or not) to: Disconnect from mobile phones that do not have hands free. Only use hands free phones – but be aware they are not without risk. Do not make a call or answer a call while driving. As pedestrians, understand that the mobile also makes us unaware of road risks when we are absorbed in a conversation. The presence of mobile phones in driving has increased exponentially in recent years, causing countless accidents. For this reason, a bill that reforms current traffic legislation, and which is currently in parliamentary process, plans to increase points to be deducted for driving while on a handheld mobile phone device from 3 to 6.

Moir and Phipps lift the Captains Cup

On Wednesday 29th September Las Ramblas played host to the annual Captains Cup pairs competition. It was a perfect day for golf or though some of the early starters teed off with miner’s lamps!! The standard of golf was exceptional with 4 pairs scoring over 40 points! It ended a very close run affair with the eventual winners snatching the Cup with 43 points on Countback.

There was strangely only one 2 on the day with Graham Murray cleaning up the pot. The results were as follows :1. Ian Moir & Ron Phipps - 43 points 2. David Brench & Pedro Dunn - 43 points 3. Andy Martin & Henny Oldenziel - 41 points 4. Graham Murray & Joyce McClusky

Football fan jailed for racist remarks A West Bromwich Albion fan has received an eight week jail sentence after he was found guilty of racially abusing one of the players – Romaine Sawyers – on social media. Simon Silwood wrote on Facebook that midfielder Sawyers should win the ‘Baboon d’Or’, a sarcastic reference to the Ballon d’Or prize. The Ballon d’Or is an annual football award presented by French news magazine France Football that is one of the oldest and generally regarded as the most prestigious individual award for football players. Silwood posted the racist remark after West Brom lost 5-0 to Man City in January of this year. The 50 year old denied that his remark was racist, claiming to police that his comment was “stupod, not racial”. He then claimed that autocorrect had changed the word “buffoon” to “baboon”. Sawyers told the court that the facebook comment had left him feeling “harassed, alarmed and distressed.” Silwood was convicted at Walsall Magistrates Court and has been banned for life by West Brom. District Judge Briony Clarke ruled he was “not a credible witness” and had meant the post to be offensive. Passing sentence at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court, the judge said: “This is, Mr Silwood, a serious offence. There is no place for racism or racist abuse online. This clearly in my view crosses the custody threshold. I assess the remorse you have for your actions as very minimal indeed. In my view it (the offence) falls into the category of greatest harm. We have to accept it had a wider impact and a substantial impact on Mr Sawyers. In my view,

taking into account what I have heard, there is no reason to suspend the sentence.” Silwood was also ordered to pay a £128 victim surcharge as well as a thousand pounds in costs and compensation. The accused was charged after an investigation was carried out by PC Stuart Ward, the UK’s first dedicated hate crime officer within a football unit. Prosecutor Simon Brownsey said the message posted by Silwood “was intentionally posted and was blatant racism towards black professional footballer Mr Romaine Sawyers”. “Three posts were placed on that thread,” the prosecutor said. “The first one said ‘b******’. The second was ‘white lives matter when you try and watch’. The third post, from Mr Silwood, said ‘Baboon dor’.” Before Silwood was sentenced, Mr Brownsey remarked that the offence was a “grossly offensive racial hate crime” which had impacted on all black professional footballers and wider society, putting it into a higher category of harm caused. In a statement provided to the court, Sawyers said: “Having seen the word baboon I assumed it was referring to the colour of my skin. “The word has left me feeling harassed, alarmed and distressed, and I find the message to be racist based on the colour of my skin. “The whole incident has left me extremely upset. “I find it difficult to believe that in 2021 there are still people out in society who believe it is acceptable to behave like this.”

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT n cHris darwen chris@costablancapeople.com

Well, folks - who had seven matches in the First Manager To Get Sacked This Season Sweepstake? Before the season actually started many of us might have looked at Xisco at Watford and felt he might need to get at least a couple of wins and a draw from the first seven games to stay in the Vicarage Road hot seat and that is exactly what he did. It wasn’t enough though, eh? The Watford board, like they ever need an excuse to sack a manager in the Premier League, cited “a negative trend in performances” and seem to have Claudio Ranieri lined up to take over - leaving me frantically searching to see if any Premier League-winning managers have ever got relegated. Also, who knew that it’s harder to get a second yellow card after the age of 35 than it is for of the rest of the football world? Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s lovely that James Milner is still a valued part of the Liverpool squad and his versatility puts him right up there with Phil Neville for me. But at any level, any day of the week, no matter which way you look at it, that was a second yellow. Not even a soft second yellow, just a clear and obvious yellow. Obviously, after such a crucial moment, Liverpool went up the other end and Salah scored one of the Premier League goals. Many sides would have lost it at that point, but not Peppy G’s lot. KDB found another equaliser and City left with a point. Maybe the team motivation comes from the threat of having to wear the same sweatshirt Pep dons every single week? I think most people would keep going with that punishment hanging over them. Mind you, I’d give it to Joao Cancelo anyway after that bit of defending. Up at Old Trafford, Rafa Benitez was smiling like a Cheshire cat having seen his Everton side nick a point whilst inflicting further damage to the reputation of Fred. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer blamed a “lack of cutting edge” (having left Pogba and Ronaldo on the bench) when what he should have come out and said was

“if a strong wind hadn’t blown Fred over, we’d have won”. The Brazilian had two opportunities to stop Demarai Gray breaking away from a United setpiece yet ended up backside firmly inserted in Manchester turf as Gray found Doucoure who found Andros Townsend who, amazingly, declined to cut back on to his left and drilled a right-footed effort past the statueesque De Gea. Still, at least the United fans got to see the Ronaldo celebration again - Townsend going to great lengths to explain his copycat effort was in tribute and not to mock. Bruno Fernandes thinks United need to change something - I suspect there is a growing agreement in the boardroom. One of the bigger existential questions of the weekend was - if James Ward-Prowse had not got himself sent off, would we be talking about a Chelsea crisis? Southampton (plus VAR) were looking good for a point at the Bridge until their skipper went flying through the little legs of Jorginho. From there, Chelsea got going and even Timo Werner managed to get a goal allowed. Incredibly, the German has had 16 goals disallowed by VAR since joining the club yet still felt compelled to wheel away in celebration as if the fact he was clearly onside guaranteed it would be given. England left-back Ben Chilwell was back in the side and will hope that Tommy T focuses more on his volleyed goal than his oh-so-clumsy foul on Tino Livramento that gifted Southampton an equaliser from the spot.

Oh, and for the record, the other question floating around my mind was whether Romelu Lukaku has made Chelsea worse not better - but we can save that for another time. Mikel Arteta gratefully accepted “a point gained” as Arsenal were outplayed by Brighton for the majority of their 0-0 draw. Arteta can be grateful to Aaron Ramsdale, a goalkeeper that can only be termed “never knowingly dull”. Spurs, very much knowingly dull in the post-Poch era, beat Aston Villa 2-1 thanks to Sonny putting in a decent second-half display. It turns out that scoring a treble against some European minnows doesn’t mean that Harry Kane is bang back in form - maybe he is being distracted by his new toilet roll and toothpaste company? It’s 400 up for Sean Dyche - no, not fouls they committed in their attempts to bully poor little Norwich off the pitch but games managed for Burnley. It was a first point of the season for Daniel Farke and Burnley’s winless Turf Moor streak continues apace. Leeds finally managed to get a win - beating Watford 1-0 which led to the aforementioned Xisco getting the bullet. Would Leeds have fired Bielsa had they gone seven without a win? No, but then they are not run by crazy men. Consistent crazy men, admittedly, but crazy nonetheless. Patrick Vieira seems to be adapting to life at Crystal Palace and is getting the hang of substitutes. Having seen Edouard come on and score two off the bench against Spurs the other week,

Vieira repeated the trick when 2-0 to Leicester. Michael Olise and Jeffrey Schlupp were thrown on and both found the back of the net cancelling out yet another Jamie Vardy goal and a birthday strike from Iheanacho. There is no finer club than West Ham when it comes to bursting their own bubble. Everyone’s been getting a bit West Ham happy in recent weeks and this is not suggesting that the Moysiah is not doing a fine job. But, Wissa wizzed in an injury-time winner for Brentford and the Bees are very much creating their very own Premier League buzz. You learn something new every day, they say. I’ve learned that Wolves’ new goalscoring South Korean Hwang is nicknamed the Bull. I would love to believe that formed some of the recruitment conversations over the summer. “Guys, we are struggling to score goals. Obviously, we can’t get Steve Bull out of retirement but do we know of any strikers that might play like him? What’s that? His nickname is the bull? Tell me more….” Hwang scored twice against Newcastle and Wolves’ revival is in full flow. On the other side of the fence, Joelinton is surely Mike Ashley showing the fans what happens if he actually spends big money. The hapless number nine who is not a nine (any more or ever) is surely trying to find fame as the worst Premier League player of all time. Fear not though Newcastle fans - you won’t have any managerial upheaval as Ashley refuses to pay Bruce off to the tune of £3m to leave.

Elche CF Break their Duck at Home Elche CF engineered their first home win of the season with a 1-0 result against Celta Vigo. After two best forgotten performances last week where the Franjiverdes took zero points from a possible six, the team was under pressure to deliver. They spent the week training hard at the La Finca Golf Hotel, as Fran Escriba continues to incorporate the recent signings, shaping and moulding his team into, what we hope will be, a mid table La Liga finisher.

The first half was very pedestrian, with neither side making any startling moves as they both seemed more afraid of committing errors than creating chances. Only in the final minutes did Elche, led by Josan, attempt an attack, but it was not enough to alter the score before half time. The second half was like a high speed

car chase! Elche threatened first with a shot from Barragán, but Celta responded quickly with a high shot from Tapia and another from Murillo that Casilla saved. Immediately afterwards Celta made a devastating defensive error. A rebound from Barragán, allowed Fidel to control the ball in the front of the area. He flicked it to Benedetto, who beat Dituro with a powerful shot, giving the home side the lead. The Argentine’s goal forced Celta to press harder against a changing Elche team who lost both Gonzalo Verdú and Diego González in

quick succession to injuries. Elche had a number of shots on target but Celta’s star played Iago Aspa eventually found the back of the net on the 91st minute. The whistle happy referee required the back up of VAR, although it was clearly visible from the stands, to annul the goal due to a hand ball.

The EuroTourGuide Coach is already available for booking for Elche CF’s next home fixture against Espanyol at the Martinez Valero on Sunday the 24th October for a 14:00 kick off.

name a Guide Dog Puppy Competition A COMPETITION has been launched to name a cute young guide dog puppy. As part of a campaign to support the ONCE Foundation for Guide Dogs (FOPG), Specsavers Ópticas is running the competition during the month of October. One lucky winner will have the honour of namingthe guide dog puppy, as well as winning a hamper of prizes. This will include a voucher for a pair of designer sunglasses, a selection of goodies from the charity, a certificate, and a photo of the puppy. Jorge Martínez de Lizarduy Araico, from Specsavers Ópticas Benidorm comments: ‘We are really looking forward to receiving some great name suggestions for FOPG’snext litter of puppies. Names must start with the letter N, be short and easy for the dogs to hear and can’t be people’s names. Please tell us what name you have chosen and why you have chosen it. They can be for female or male dogs. We’ll select our favourite at the end

of October and announce our lucky winner and their chosen name.’ The competition, which is free to enter, runs throughout Blindness Awareness Month in October. To enter the competition, follow Specsavers Ópticas on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter and send them a message with your answer, or comment on the competition post. Alternatively, you can email your entry to paul.ainsworth@ specsavers.com, or fill in a paper entry form at one of the Specsavers Ópticas stores. Specsavers Ópticas in Guardamar have a raffle running in store until the end of November to raise money for the charity. Simply donate 1€ or more to the ONCE Foundation for Guide Dogs in store and be entered into the raffle to win a prize basket of dog treats, a dog toy and chocolates for the owner. The winner will be announced at the beginning of December. The competition and raffle is being

organised as part of Specsavers Ópticas’ campaign to raise 5,000€ for FOPG by the end of 2021 and to raise awareness of the tireless work they do. TheFoundation breeds, trains and deliversmore than 100 guide dogs every year to people who have severe visual impairment across Spain. They provide these guide dogs free of charge thanks to the support of ONCE and companies and individuals such as Specsavers Ópticas and their clients who pull together to raise funds for this worthy cause. The work of this Foundation is essential for blind or severely visually impaired people to live as independently as possible. Going from walking with a cane to walking with a guide dog represents a great improvement in their mobility, substantially increasing the speed and safety of their movements, which enables them to integrate better into the community and lead fuller lives. To breed, train and place a guide dog with someone, costs approximately €40,000 and today there are more than 400 blind people waiting for a guide dog in Spain. Fundraising actions like this are a great help to provide as many guide dogs as possible for people who really need them. Specsavers Ópticas is located in Javea, Calpe, Benidorm, Torrevieja, La Zenia and Guardamar on the Costa Blancaand they are fundraising for FOPG in store until the end of the year. Visit your nearest opticians to enter the competition or make a donation. Find out more at www.specsavers.es.

new equipment for Torrevieja fire brigade GBP / EUR UPdatE gBP Losing a little off the majors, sterling had a week where it experienced all kinds of swings and roundabouts. It kicked off the week with petrol panic buying, and despite the insistence of the government that there is no fuel shortage, queues and empty pumps for the rest of the week didn’t exactly alleviate concerns that the shortage of lorry drivers had hit the fuel industry. According to the Petrol Retailers Association, over a quarter of its members (independent fuel retailers) were still out of fuel on Thursday. Better than the 37% earlier in the week, but still. Outside of the petrol panic, eyes were on the Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey, who left the door open for a rise in interest rates. While a sentiment that normally would strengthen the pound, it wasn’t enough to provide the necessary buoyancy amid the ongoing energy crisis in the UK, among other shortages, and so the pound sank against a basket of major currencies. A “stagflation” crisis is to blame – the unpleasant mix of rising prices and slowing growth, which threatens household spending just as the furlough scheme comes to an end. With an estimated 1 million people receiving income through the scheme, a rise in unemployment and a further knock to spending is expected. Ending on a lighter note, UK GDP released

this week shows a 5.5% rise in Q2, up from a preliminary estimate of 4.8% growth, with the ONS figures citing a 7.9% jump in pent-up household spending from April to June. eURO Kicking off the week with a stumbly start thanks to the German election, it had always been too tight to call, but Olaf Scholz’s Social Democrats was victorious in the end. It appears incoming conservative leader Armin Laschet has yet to concede though. The protracted nature of forming Germany’s new government contributed to the euro taking minor losses against other major currencies. Elsewhere across Europe, business and consumer confidence seems to be improving. The European Commission Index forecast was 116.5 but exceeded expectations by reaching 117.8 in September, up from 117.6 in August. Speaking at the ECB Forum on Central Banking, President Christine Lagarde said that Eurozone activity is predicted to return to prepandemic levels by the end of the year, with issues surrounding supply chain bottlenecks, labour market shortages and rising energy prices fading throughout the first half of 2022. This is despite power shortages across parts of the continent leading to factory closures and, therefore, rising concerns for post-pandemic economic recovery.

The Mayor of Torrevieja Eduardo Dolón along with Councillor for Security and Emergencies Federico Alarcón visited Torrevieja fire station this week for the presentation of the newest equipment acquired by the fire brigade. A new 32 metre automatic ladder truck will allow fire fighters better and safer access to balconies and recessed facades. Head of Torrevieja fire crew, Noel Quiñones highlighted the importance of having this new fire engine as part of the

fleet as it will allow more safety and efficiency in the services provided, especially for the emergency rescue of the elderly or infirm. He also confirmed that all current personnel are undergoing a training course for the correct use of the new ladder truck. For his part, Eduardo Dolón, thanked the Provincial Council for the acquisition of this vehicle, which represents an investment of almost €700,000. He also congratulated all the professionals working at

Torrevieja fire station for their great work and professionalism. The new fire engine boasts a state of the art automatic escalator with a 360º rotating platform, as well as a basket with capacity for four people and a maximum of 400 kilograms. It also has rotating stretcher holders, suitable for supporting up to 200 kilograms, as well as anti-collision sensors, safety traffic lights for access to stair sections and an anemometer to measure wind speed.
