Torrevieja money laundering operation shut down Guardia Civil have arrested four people, alleged to be part of a money laundering gang based in torrevieja. the gang members are accused of laundering over €2 million. the investigation began back in July 2020 when a previous investigation into a million euro pyramid scheme led the Guardia Civil’s economic Crime Unit to look into a possible money laundering operation based in torrevieja. in June 2020, investigators discovered

obtained illegally between 2016 and 2020. investigators believed the gang laundered around 2 million euro, much of which had come from aggravated robberies. the gang set up fake businesses and used front men, in whose names they opened bank accounts and named as the registered owners of properties and vehicles. the first phase of the investigation saw four people arrested, two men and two women, believed to be the leaders of the gang. those arrested are of Spanish, Croatian and Colombian nationality and some have a history of aggravated robbery. they have been charged with money laundering and belonging to a criminal organisation. All of the suspects appeared in Court no 3 of torrevieja where the judge embargoed 19 bank accounts, 19 properties and 9 vehicles. Guardia Civil continue with the investigation and new arrests have not been ruled out.

that the first operation was twofold – on the one hand, laundering large sums of money obtained from victims of a pyramid scheme and on the other, laundering money from other criminal organisations. Officers discovered the involvement of several smaller ‘independent’ money laundering operations, one of which prompted this most recent investigation in torrevieja. Officers discovered a gang of at least 13 people laundering cash

Fire destroys Catral shoe factory A fire broke out in the early hours of Sunday morning, destroying a shoe factory in Catral. Sources at the Provincial Firefighters Consortium confirmed that the fire caused severe damage to the structure of the building and parts of the roof had collapsed, but neighbouring buildings were not affected, nor were there any injuries. the alarm was raised shortly before 4am when fire crews were called to the warehouse on Calle Partición in

Catral’s San Juan industrial estate. A number of vehicles from Crevillente, elche and San Vicente del raspeig fire stations rushed to the scene and 17 members of the fire brigade began tackling the blaze. the fire was considered under control at 7am on Sunday but firefighters worked throughout the day to extinguish the last flames.

Airport won’t recover until 2026 experts predict that Alicante-elche airport will not recover its pre covid passenger figures of 15 million until at least 2026. Figures from Spain’s airport management authority AenA reveal a slow recovery in air traffic and rules out any growth over the next five years. the Airport regulation document (dOrA), published last week, is a 176 page study of the air transport industry with detailed projections for the 20222026 period. the dOrA projects that it will take at least five years for Alicante airport to rebuild the 15 million passenger traffic that it enjoyed in 2019, before Covid 19 hit. the document also takes stock of the airport’s figures pre pandemic. in 2020, it lost 11 million passengers breaking the best streak in its history which began in 2017 with 13.7 million passengers, rising to 13.8 million in 2018 and the record 15 million in 2019.

the document lists a series of actions to be carried out to ensure recovery, focusing on operational safety and investment. AenA’s forecasts estimate that Alicante-elche airport will handle 10,234,340 million passengers in the year 2022 but there is still a long way to go to fully recover. the airport is one of the largest in the country and the most important tourist gateway for the Valencian Community. Alicante airport currently has the capacity to handle up to 19 million passengers – Valencia can handle 10.5m – and neither airport is expected to reach capacity in the next five years. the report also details a €56m investment for a series of improvements at Alicante airport, which currently handles around 39 aircraft per hour. Madrid airport is set to receive €404m while the balearic airports will receive €361m.

Fourteen arrested in Elche for €10m fraud

national police arrested fourteen people, mostly in elche for alleged involvement in a ten million euro fraud involving a network of false companies, manufactured invoices and fraudulent iVA (VAt) declarations. nine of those arrested appeared in court to testify, many of whom are local businesspeople including two lawyers. the remaining five people were released and are waiting to appear in court.

those leading the investigation claim that based on the documentation that was seized by inspectors of the Ministry of Finance, that the false invoices issued exceed ten million euro. Ann of Almoradi asks “What is a QR Code and how do I use it”? A Qr code is a type of matrix barcode. a machine-readable code consisting of an array of black and white squares, typically used for storing UrLs or other information for reading by the camera on a smartphone. to read a Qr Code you need to download a Qr reader App to your Smartphone. the App uses your phones camera to read the

Qr code. the App then reads the code and allows you to go to the website address contained within the Qr Code. example

This is not a question from a reader but rather a topic I shared with the Technology Help Group. Most people these days have accounts with various companies holding their private information. From Facebook to all other information sharing Applications. they also have precious photos and videos stored on computers and mobile devices. Watching “ rip Off britain” on bbC made me realise that most people make no provision for family to have access to their photos, videos and mobile devices should they not be

around. recently i tried to help someone get into an iPad that belonged to his now deceased sister. that was not possible without information only known to his sister. i could not even put it back to “Factory Settings” so he could used it. i contacted Apple support by telephone. they were very helpful and asked me try many different things. Without this personal account information there was no way to use this iPad. there was one option where a lawyer had to be used to get a court judgment to allow Apple to give access. if you have precious information, photos or videos that close family members would want access to after you are no longer here you need to take action now. You can appoint a family member to take on responsibility and gain authority from all providers of your digital information and accounts. You can also appoint a “digital Will executor” who you provide with all your account and access details for your online presence. they will also need details of how to access your devices.

New draft law protects pets A new change in legislation in Spain protects the rights of animals, especially pets. the biggest change is that the new animal protection law will require dog owners to undergo training courses before owning a dog. the nature of the training course is yet to be determined. the preliminary draft of the law was published on October 6 for review by the Ministry of Social rights and represents a dramatic change in regulations for the ownership and care of animals, with special attention to pets. the document published on October 6 is a preliminary draft so still will be subject to changes before it reaches the council of ministers before being processed by parliament. experts believe that the legislation in its current format will cause disagreements between the various town halls and autonomous communities in Spain. Also of note is the absence of any mention of bullfighting shows. Animals used in experiments, such as scientific research, only have a brief mention, saying that they are exempt from the requirement to “handle the animal with non-aggressive or violent methods that can cause suffering or mistreatment of the animal”nor is it necessary to carry out periodic and documented

Glitzy Charity Event Sparkles with Success People certainly ‘put on their glitz’ on Saturday 25th Sept at the Marina bar, Calle de las rosas torrvieja for the charity event “Puttin On the Glitz.” it was all in aid of the Stroke Association Spain and was the first event for the charity to be organized by well known fundraisers david & Lorraine Whitney raising €441 for the charity. A delicious two course meal, raffle, tombola and quiz ensured the evening went by smoothly with the addition of prizes for the best dressed man and woman. Paul Owen, founder of the Stroke Association, was there to outline the charity’s work and its importance and was thrilled with the support shown for

the event. A big thank you must go to all the many people who generously donated items and to Lynne Smith who at short notice conjured up a dreamy gateaux for the raffle and to Mary terry Flynn for her generous donation of a voucher for afternoon tea for two at the bar. thanks to rita and dave of the Marina bar for their continued charity support and to their team of brilliant workers at the bar. the next event on david & Lorraine’s event calendar will be the popular Christmas Fayre on Saturday afternoon the 20 november, again for the Stroke Association.

One key point surrounds animal euthanasia with the draft legislation indicating that putting an animal down can only be done if justified under veterinary approval for the sole purpose of avoiding suffering in cases of incurable disease or injury, or for reasons of animal health, or the safety of people. People will be prohibited from mistreating or physically assaulting animals or subjecting them to negligent treatment or any practice that may cause the animal suffering, physical or psychological damage or cause their death. Also to be prohibited is the abandonment of an animal in an open or closed space. Mutilation or body modifications will not be allowed (cutting tails or ears of dogs, for example) with the exception of required medical procedures to guarantee the health of the animal or to limit the animal’s reproductive capacity. Further prohibitions there are a series of prohibitions set out by the draft legislation as it currently stands. Animals will not be allowed to be used in fights, or for training for fights, or for instigating aggression towards other

animals or people. nor will they be used in public shows, tourist activities or any advertising that causes the animal anguish, pain or suffering. begging using animals will not be allowed. Submitting the animal to inappropriate or excessive work will also be prohibited. the use of spiked collars or leads that could harm the animal will not be allowed. Animals will not be used as a reward or prize in a raffle or promotion. domesticated animals will not be released into the wild. Pet animals cannot be left unsupervised for three consecutive days and in the case of dogs, this period cannot exceed 24 consecutive hours. Pets must be kept in a good state of cleanliness and hygiene and those that, due to their size or characteristics cannot live inside the family home must be provided with adequate accommodation with shelter according to their size and protection from inclement weather. in the case of sociable animals, the draft legislation says that they cannot be kept isolated from humans or other animals and must be provided with the company they require. Measures must be taken to avoid uncontrolled reproduction of pets. the legislation also says that pets cannot be sold in shops and breeding can only be carried out by authorised breeders.

When the Actors Community theatre group (ACtS) began rehearsals for their next production Ladies day, two years ago, nobody could have imagined what was about to happen to the world in early 2020.the group was just three weeks away from opening at the Cardenal belluga theatre, San Fulgencio when the axe came down and a strict lockdown was introduced to combat the Covid 19 pandemic. Like other similar organisations, the ACtS members were prevented from meeting and rehearsals came to a halt. even when restrictions were eased, it was only possible to have limited get togethers and only in the form of glorified read-throughs with cast members observing distancing rules and sitting at separate tables. Whilst other drama and entertainment groups were suffering the same problems; added to ACtS predicament, a series of disasters and setbacks followed one after the other. Firstly two key members of the production team were lost permanently, for personal reasons on the one hand and serious illness on the other. then a further series of other misfortunes relating to health were experienced. One a broken leg following a fall which, because of complications, prevented the actor in question from attending rehearsals for seven weeks; and several

other incidents including the necessity for self-isolation by certain members of the cast. these were followed by the director Colin bird, receiving phone calls from the UK notifying him that there had been a fire at his and his wife’s property in Suffolk, and the death of a dear friend in bermuda – neither of which could be followed up on, due to the harsh international travel restrictions. then finally the production’s stage manager and her husband announced they would have to return to the UK for much needed specialist medical treatment and would miss the performance dates. nobody in the group could have been blamed for thinking that the omens should not be ignored and perhaps the production cancelled. the Gods of Am dram appeared not to be smiling on ACtS. but the group, responsible for such recent productions as the Play that Goes Wrong and Calendar Girls amongst others, battled on and against all the odds are now proud to announce that the long awaited Ladies day is being staged from thursday 28th until Saturday 30th October at Cardenal belluga, San Fulgencio with tickets available by emailing actstheatre@ icloud.com or phone, message or WhatsApp on 602 683 925. Profits donated to local charities.

Outrage as Murcia hospital calls homosexuality an illness People have taken to social media to vent their anger after a young woman was told by a hospital that her homosexuality was an illness. the 19-yearold woman said she received the clinical report after a gynaecological check-up in Murcia. According to a local LGbt+ association Galactyco, the medical report said that homosexuality was a “current illness” in the hospital. the diagnosis - which was issued earlier this month - has generated great controversy in Spain after it was made public. the 19-year-old said that she had accepted the apology of the gynaecologist who wrote the document. the woman also expressed hope that she could inspire other people who are “more insecure” to deal with this situation. in a statement to the eFe news agency, the woman said she was “very surprised” when she arrived home after the appointment to see what the doctor had written. She described it as an “insult” and “injustice” and initially filed a complaint with the reina Sofía hospital. the woman also stated that she does not believe the clinic’s explanation that it was an error by the gynaecologist. “everyone has their own

thoughts; some are better, some are worse and there is no need to think about it anymore,” she told eFe. “homosexuality is not an illness, far from it, nor is it wrong,” she added. the Galactyco association also released a statement condemning the “humiliating treatment” the woman had suffered. “it was in 1990 when the World health Organization removed homosexuality from the list of mental illnesses, and yet, 31 years later, in the Murcian health System some professionals continue to

assume sexual orientation as an illness.” “We publicly denounce the manifest ignorance with homophobic overtones that links sexual orientation with illness,” the group said. “there are already numerous cases of humiliating treatment that come to the attention of our Association because of sexual or gender orientation, and we consider it alarming, unacceptable and intolerable that to date, the professionals on whom adequate treatment of our health depends ignore the realities of LGbt+ people.”

Owning a property on the Costa blanca means you’ll need to have certain things in place to make sure you’re a legal homeowner. August highest for house sales residential property sales in August this year were at their highest since 2007, the peak year of the housing market ‘boom’, according to the national institute of Statistics (ine). With nearly 50,000 homes shifted in just one month, the difference between August 2021 and the same month in 2020 was almost 60 percent. back in 2007, when home prices were at their highest in history and the buying and selling market was in constant activity – just before the ‘crash’ that came between 2008 and 2010 – a record 58,872 residential properties were bought in the month of August, a figure that has never been seen since. Fast-forward 14 years, the largest volume of August home sales after the high of 2007 totals 49,884 – the most buoyant yet by a wide margin. Only 2017, with 44,834, and 2010, with 43,610, came anywhere near the bumper August seen in 2021 – which was even more welcome for the residential property industry, as well as for sellers themselves, when taking into account a lean summer in 2020.

by August 2020, movement restrictions had been temporarily lifted and life and business were largely back to normal in Spain, albeit with masks and social distancing - but international travel was still difficult, if not impossible, meaning the usual summer interest for holiday homes among dwellers in colder climates was mostly missing. it was not completely back to normal even by August 2021, since Spain’s key overseas holiday home-buying markets, such as the UK, France and Germany, still had limitations in

place for most of the summer, including, in some cases, the obligation for residents returning from a trip to Spain to quarantine for between five and 14 days. So a year-on-year hike of 17,292 extra sales was a huge achievement, and is likely to raise confidence in the industry as to what August 2022 might look like, with practically the whole of the western world vaccinated and Covid cases, or at least severe ones, hopefully being very rare.

Pensions, Annuities & Tax Fraud in Spain – a ticking time bomb… By Sam Kelly dipPFS, eFA, bA (hons) Managing Partner Chorus Financial

was first drawn to it a few years ago when a client told them that a large, well-known financial advisory firm had told them they could save up to 88% on their income taxes in Spain if they told the tax office that their pensions were being paid as an annuity.

every now and then an email lands in my inbox or a member of the public walks through my office door, and i know we have a serious problem. i recall around 6 years ago seeing the portfolios of several Continental Wealth Management clients, and immediately telling them they had to get out of those plans. in truth, i wasn’t so well known back then and so i wasn’t able to warn too many people in advance. despite rescuing around a dozen clients from those plans before they collapsed, as many of you will know, ultimately victims of CWM lost around £25 million from their pensions. it was the greed and selfishness of a group of financial advisers that led to those losses, and some very sad and tragic consequences for many of their victims. Over the last few years something else has been nagging at me. My attention

i immediately knew something wasn’t right. Purely from a logical point of view there was no way the Spanish tax office would offer such benefits, but beyond that, my understanding was this scheme wasn’t even using real annuities. the promise was based on transferring your pensions from the safety of your UK pension to a QrOPs (an overseas pension). the new pension trustee would agree with you a set income for a period of up to 3 years, and in return provide you with a certificate claiming that your income was an annuity. On all the cases i’ve personally investigated under such an arrangement, as you can probably guess, the financial adviser was pocketing eye-watering, undisclosed commissions, the ongoing fees were through the roof (with the client being totally unaware of the full extent), and the pension was being invested very poorly. the whole arrangement was purely there to extract as much money as possible from the client, and the promise of tax

savings was the hook. the idea behind the tax savings is to exploit a genuine tax benefit where you use your savings to buy an annuity in Spain, and the annuity payment is then taxed at a greatly reduced amount. the logic behind this is that you have already paid income taxes on your savings, so most of that annuity payment is your own capital coming back to you, hence there being a big discount on the tax basis. the problem lies when you start trying to claim those same benefits, but on income coming from your pension. A pension is tax relieved when you pay into it – i.e., you didn’t pay any income tax on those earnings, so when you take money out of it, income tax is always due in full. to simplify this, if you draw money from your pensions, whether as flexible drawdown, a true annuity, or an annuity style payment, there are no discounts in Spain, no ‘up to 88% savings’. if you file a tax return with the intention of claiming pension income is an annuity, then i’m afraid to say you are committing tax fraud. Sadly, the victims of such schemes were following advice from firms they thought they could trust, in return these firms made huge amounts of money from these victims. What

has prompted this article is that i was recently provided with a ruling from the tax office where a british gentleman in Spain has been heavily fined and made to pay years of back taxes for attempting to have his pension annuity taxed as described in this article. i have been told by several tax lawyers in the area that manyof their clients are also under investigation for the same offence, so i suspect this is just the beginning. the warning here is quite simple. if something seems illogical or ‘too good to be true’, it generally is. no one wants to pay too much in taxes, but at the same time, avoiding taxes illegally can lead to a much bigger bill in the long-term. With an ethical, qualified financial adviser you can draw up a plan to help save on your ongoing taxation in Spain, but too many firms in Spain prey on brits here with promises that cannot be fulfilled. When the tax office come knocking, you, the victim is also seen as the perpetrator of tax fraud. if you feel you may be a victim, or if you need honest, professional advice on your pensions and investments, contact Chorus Financial on info@ chorusfinancial.es, call +34 965 641 163 or visit www.chorusfinancial.es for more information.

GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP After a shellacking during the previous seven days, when it took an average hit of 0.8%, this week was much more generous to sterling, at least until the mid-point of the week. the pound added an average of 0.7%, almost neutralising last week’s losses, and it could have completed the recovery were it not for Wednesday’s minor blip. the most likely reason for its recovery was a realisation that the previous, almost panic selling, had been unwarranted. Whatever the rationale, sterling was neck-and-neck for second place on the week with the Australian and Canadian dollars while the norwegian krone had an easy win on the back of high energy prices. UK economic data were unusually few. the purchasing managers’ indices showed slower, albeit better than expected growth in manufacturing and services, whereas the construction sector showed its lowest reading since January and a point and a half shy of forecast: “shortages of materials and staff held back the construction recovery in September”. the halifax index of UK house prices (GbP) in September was 7.4% higher on the year, with Wales and Scotland leading the way. Sterling suffered a bit of a wobble following criticism of the prime minister’s speech at the Conservative party conference, but firmed the following day as a result of comments by the bank of england’s new chief economist. in

written answers to questions by Parliament’s treasury Committee he came across as possibly hawkish on monetary policy. EURO eurozone ecostats were more plentiful than british ones but were not particularly illuminating. Only one really stood out, and that was last Friday’s provisional inflation reading. it showed consumer prices rising 3.4% in the year to September, putting inflation at a 13-year high. in a speech on thursday, european Central bank board member isabel Schnabel fell in with the current central bank orthodoxy that high inflation is a short-term result of Covid, and that “Overreacting to such short-term volatility would be harmful and risk jeopardising the ongoing economic recovery”. it seemed to confirm that imminent tightening by the eCb is unlikely. the PMis from the eurozone were, like those from the UK, better than expected. however, “Growth slowed further in September as demand pressures cooled and supply issues constrained business activity”. there were some uninspiring industrial statistics out of Germany and Sweden, and August’s retail sales in the eurozone were disappointing, increasing by 0.3% on the month but remaining unchanged on the year. this lack of inspiration fed through to the euro: it lost an average of 0.7%, giving up a cent and two thirds to sterling.

NEW GRUA AWARDED

CONTRACT

torrevieja town hall has formalised the new contract for the ‘grua’ or towing service for the town. the four year contract is worth in excess of €2m and it is expected that the towing service will now be more efficient than ever so if you are illegally parked in torrevieja – watch out!

CHANGE IN SPEED LIMIT

the speed limit at an accident black spot on Avenida dr Gregorio Marañón in torrevieja has been lowered to 40km/hr. A reminder also that the mobile speed trap is always in action in torrevieja at different locations.

China has warned that World War three could be triggered ‘at any time’ after it sent dozens of warplanes into taiwan’s airspace. An article in the state-backed Global times newspaper said that ‘collusion’ between the US and taiwan was so ‘audacious’ that the situation ‘has almost lost any room for manoeuvre, teetering on the edge of a faceoff.’ it claimed that the people of China were ready to back all-out war with the US, warning the island nation against ‘playing with fire’. Almost 150 Chinese warplanes have breached taiwan’s airspace since Friday, including 56 jets on Monday in a dramatic escalation of Chinese aggression against the selfgoverning democracy. Joe biden said he had spoken to Chinese President Xi Jinping about taiwan and they agreed to abide by the taiwan agreement as tensions continue to ratchet

FLOOD PREVENTION WORKS

Major flood defence works are underway in torrevieja. A €2.4 million euro project is being carried out to prevent flooding in torreta Florida and urbanisations near the salt lake. Agamed, torrevieja’s water management company, is digging a reservoir which will eventually retain 10,000 cubic meters of rainwater during heavy rains. the works are located near urbanisation torrealmendros, near the ‘via verde’ pathway. the project is designed to be a sustainable urban drainage system which not only retains floodwaters but can store and, if possible, reuse the water. Flood water from nearby rainwater basins on Calle Jorge Manrique (near torrevigía secondary school) and on the via verde will be rerouted to the torrealmendros reservoir where it will be stored for reuse or sent to the treatment plant nearby. Arranging the flood drainage in such a way means that a separate rainwater network can be created in order that the sewerage network is not responsible for collecting rainwater and as such, should not overflow in times of heavy rain. excavation work is currently underway which will see workers dig to a depth of three metres. the channels will then be waterproofed with concrete and lining and the surface will eventually be finished with native trees so that the area will eventually look like an attractive green area. initially, the planned investment for the works was 1,205,918 million euro, but the board of directors of Agamed, decided to raise the budget to €2.4 million.

up between taipei and beijing. ‘i’ve spoken with Xi about taiwan. We agree...we’ll abide by the taiwan agreement,’ biden told reporters. taiwanese president tsai ingwen vowed to ‘do whatever it takes’ to guard taiwan against invasion as she indicated that without help from the country’s allies ‘authoritarianism has the upper hand over democracy.’ it comes as british aircraft carrier hMS Queen elizabeth (‘big Lizzie’) was shown sailing in the Philippine Sea in a joint exercise with two US carriers - the USS ronald reagan and USS Carl Vinson - and Japan’s helicopter destroyer JS ise. the armada, which also includes a number of warships from six different countries in total, trained together over the weekend in the region amid the rising tensions. the recent voyages through the Strait of taiwan by the british

and American navies, coupled with the new Aukus defence pact have infuriated beijing and sparked more shows of strength in the South China Sea. in another chilling piece of propaganda, the Global times ran a piece which asked ‘whether Australia is willing to accompany taiwan… to become cannon fodder’ after its foreign minister reached out for help preparing his defences. Australia has been on the receiving end of Chinese wrath over the last few weeks after it signed a new alliance with the UK and the US. As part of the deal, Washington and London agreed to share nuclear submarine technology with Canberra. beijing is incensed by the move because it will dramatically shift the power balance in the South China Sea, where it fights for influence with the West over smaller countries like taiwan, Vietnam and the Philippines.

Free workshops for seniors torrevieja town hall in association with Agamed has launched a series of free workshops for seniors. registration is now open for the workshops which include dance, ceramics and yoga. All of those interested can register at the department of the elderly, on Calle Maldonado 5. details were revealed this week by torrevieja’s Councillor for the elderly, inmaculada Montesinos, alongside manager and deputy manager of Agamed, Jorge ballesta and Gemma Cruz. the objectives of the three workshops is to promote health and wellbeing among the older community of torrevieja. Organisers explained that there is always huge interest in these workshops – in fact, they have already had over 100 enquiries prior to the launch of the registration period. in the last series of workshops, which took place in 2019, over 300 people participated. details of the three workshops on offer are as follows: dAnCe - the dance workshop will

Glovo buys Spanish grocery delivery startup Glovo, one of the world’s leading multi-category delivery providers, announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire grocery delivery company Lola Market in Spain as well as Mercadão in Portugal. Both Lola Market and Mercadão are on-demand delivery platforms that connect supermarkets, traditional markets and local independent stores with customers. Glovo said that changing consumer habits are redefining the delivery industry and this deal is a reflection of that change; enabling Glovo to cover the main three purchasing occasions for groceries consumers: emergency

essentials, fast-access convenience and planned purchases (larger basket orders such as the ‘weekly shop’). Oscar Pierre, CEO and cofounder of Glovo, said: “We see huge potential in the ondemand groceries marketplace and both companies are strong local players in their respective markets, and further strengthen our Q-Commerce offering. With Lola Market and Mercadão on board, we can build stronger partnerships with retailers, offer our users big-basket purchases and provide a more complete service. These acquisitions represent a significant step forward for us, as we’re now able to cover all of the main

purchasing considerations for groceries customers, making Glovo a one-stop-shop for e-groceries.” Luis Perez del Val Sheriff, CEO of Lola Market, said: “We are very proud to be joining Glovo and Mercadão, and we believe that together we are offering users the very best groceries delivery experience in Europe. Our expertise in planned purchases and big basket deliveries, as well as our loyal user base and cutting-edge technology, make for a very attractive proposition. We’re confident that together we can continue to make ordering food more accessible and convenient for users than ever before.”

Gary Barlow launches Spanish wine range Gary Barlow is the latest celebrity to launch their own drinks brand, having revealed a new organic Spanish wine range that will be available to buy from this week. Called Gary Barlow Organic, the range includes a red and a white made from grapes grown in certified organic plots in Spain. The project is a partnership with celebrity wine maker Paul Schaafsma of Benchmark Drinks who already counts Kylie Minogue and Sir Ian

Botham among his successful wine brands. Gary Barlow’s range, which is due to go on sale at Morrisons stores in the UK this week, is priced at £8 a bottle. The white is a blend of Verdejo and Viura from the 2020 vintage. Fermented in stainless steel, it spent two months on its lees before bottling. The result is a “zesty, refreshing, white with aromas of lime, pear and anise”. Gary Barlow Organic Red is a blend of 2020 Tempranillo and

Syrah described as juicy and fruit-driven, it offers notes of “wild berries, rosemar y and a hint of chocolate”. Barlow said that launching a wine brand is an ambition he’d been turning over in his head for years.

A drink with dinner is fine, World’s best restaurants say experts The ‘occasional’ glass of wine is perfectly safe, scientists have insisted in a bid to put to bed fears that a tipple with dinner could be detrimental to health. A landmark paper published in the Lancet in 2019 stoked fears that even small amounts of alcohol is likely to cause changes in blood pressure and increase the risk of a stroke. It overturned a mainstream theory that a regular glass of wine could actually be beneficial for heart health because of the protective antioxidants contained in the drink. However, the new report, by scientists from University College London and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine claims the Lancet analysis was flawed. Sir Nicholas Wald, an expert in epidemiology and preventative medicine at UCL, said that while it is difficult to define what a safe amount of alcohol is, it is not true to say a single glass is harmful. He said: “One cannot now say any amount of alcohol is harmful in the same way as one can say any amount of smoking is harmful. The occasional glass of wine or no more than a glass

of beer, say, every other day would be acceptable given our current state of knowledge. One need not feel that the only safe alcohol intake is zero.” You should not feel guilty about drinking red wine in moderation during the week in fact, it could give you health benefits, a study claimed. A team of experts in Germany and Northern Ireland looked at the

link between consumption of flavonoids - found in red wine, among other food and drink and blood pressure in a sample of nearly 1,000 German people. They found drinking three standard-sized glasses (125ml) of red wine a week can lower blood pressure. It’s thought

that flavonoids promote the relaxation of muscles in our arteries, allowing them to widen and therefore improving blood flow. However, the experts stress that if you don’t drink alcohol already, you shouldn’t start, and that boozers should always bare in mind official drinking guidelines. The study, published in the journal Hypertension, was conducted by scientists at Queen’s University Belfast and Kiel University in Germany. According to the team, flavonoids – the abundant nutrients in fruits, vegetables, tea and other plant-based foods – appear to have a positive effect on blood pressure levels. Most major research into alcohol’s effect on strokes and blood pressure show a ‘J-shaped’ relationship between alcohol and stroke risk. People who abstain from drinking normally have a slightly higher risk than those who have a tipple in low quantities. But heavy drinkers are always at the highest risk. When these risks are plotted on a graph, the curve takes the shape of a letter J.

New Nordic cuisine is back on top of the world, as Noma, the restaurant responsible for starting the movement, was named the best restaurant at the World’s 50 Best Awards. The prize comes seven years after its co-founder and chef René Redzepi last topped the list, a feat he also achieved in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Despite the awards system preventing previous champions from winning again, the restaurant reopened in 2018 in a new location which made it exempt from the new rule. It caps off a good month for Noma, which in September finally received a third Michelin star for the first time ever. Lunch with matching wines at the iconic restaurant will set customers back £560. Second place also landed in Copenhagen, cementing Denmark’s status as the capital of modern fine dining, with Geranium finishing runnerup. Uniquely, it is located in

Denmark’s national football stadium. Rounding off the top five were restaurants from countries that routinely feature in the upper echelons of the awards. Asador Etxebarri in the Basque Country, Spain, finished third, with its chef Victor Arguinzoniz picking up the Chef’s Choice award, the only prize voted exclusively by fellow chefs. Fourth place went to Central in Lima, Peru, which emphasises native Peruvian produce. Fifth was Disfrutar, a Barcelona eatery that continues the avant-garde traditions of Spanish molecular gastronomy. Aside from the controversy surrounding the best female prize, which the late Anthony Bourdain questioned back in 2013, the World’s 50 Best has been accused of promoting Eurocentric tasting menu-style restaurants led by white male chefs, and no restaurant from Latin America, Asia or Africa has ever won. Critics have

also questioned the relevance of such awards in a postpandemic world. Nevertheless, some chefs have claimed that the ‘food Oscars’ has risen above even the Michelin Guide to become the most important accolade in gastronomy. The World’s 50 Best has attempted to address these issues with a special set of ‘Champions of Change’ prizes given to those promoting positive change in the industry. This year’s winners were Kurt Evans, an American chef and founder of the End Mass Incarceration dinner series, which helps combat mass incarceration in the US and showcases black chefs. Viviana Varese was also a winner for her attempts to create a more inclusive industry and training of refugees. Deepanker Khosla was the third winner, after turning his Bangkok restaurant Haoma into a soup kitchen during the pandemic.

I’ve been seeing a man for several months. We got together when his wife developed dementia. It had been a long, eight years for him, nursing her. I am his neighbour, and we live on the same community. We met at a community meeting, and starting talking regularly after that. He needed support so I offered to help out. After a couple of years

CostaBlancaPeople 12th - 18th October 2021

we became close, and a relationship began. All this time his wife got worse. His daughters came over periodically when they could. I did my best to stay away at those times, but they turned up out of the blue once and saw their father with me, and put two and two together. We weren’t in a compromising position, but they saw that we were more than just neighbours.

Now their mother has passed on, they have told their father that in no uncertain terms will they tolerate including me in their life. They felt what their father had done was inexcusable when their mother was incapable of objecting. He told them that their mother never knew anything about our relationship, but they said the fact that he had pursued one, was bad enough. He and I are serious but he says he risks losing his daughters.

If the daughters are adamant that you won’t be made part of their lives, you must both have a separate life that doesn’t include them. As you live in different countries, this might not be too difficult to conduct. It will mean that he has to travel to see them, without you, and when they come to see him, you should not be around; but what is the alternative? That his daughters get their own way and you split up? No one should be able to rule another person’s life.

Belly-fat burning foods Let’s face it belly fat can be stubborn and a flat stomach is one of our most wanted attributes. Belly fat, which is also called visceral fat, is more likely to cause chronic illnesses like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes than the fat that lies underneath your skin. We’ve all heard, “you are what you eat” and this is certainly the case with belly fat. Getting rid of stubborn belly fat may come down to simply shifting your diet to incorporate more belly fatburning foods.... Oats Oats are high insoluble fibre, specifically a fibre called beta-glucan, which absorbs water and slows digestion and glucose, or blood sugar absorption. Soluble beta-glucan fibre has been shown to be beneficial for insulin resistance and weight loss, specifically abdominal fat loss because it helps to keep you full and reduces hunger cravings. Apples Apples are one of the highest-fibre fruits, packing 4.5 grams of fibre (17 percent of the daily value) in one medium apple. The fibres in an apple are called pectin, which breaks down in your gut and slow digestion, helping you feel full longer after eating. Capsaicin This can be found in cayenne pepper, chili peppers, chili powder, curry powder, paprika, and red pepper flakes.

Capsaicin has not only been found to suppress inflammation caused by obesity, but it has the potential to decrease food intake, burn fatter, lower body fat stores, increase metabolism, and reduce appetite. Chili peppers and cayenne, in particular, can help us burn more calories by about 5 percent.

Nuts According to research, eating an ounce of nuts or so every day actually helps regulate appetite, which helps reduce excess calories, which could make weight control easier and flatten your belly. In addition, only two-thirds of the calories in walnuts, pistachios, and almonds are actually available to the body. Broccoli If you’re looking to burn belly fat, stock up on this nutritious green veggie. This vegetable improves insulin sensitivity which helps with weight loss and reduces the risk of type2 diabetes. Egg whites While there’s nothing wrong with eating the whole egg, egg whites on their own are lower in overall calories and fat. Egg whites are a great option for reaching a slight calorie deficit and helping reduce body fat. Plain Greek yogurt Whether you enjoy yogurt as part of your breakfast smoothie or as a snack, it’s a beneficial food for weight loss. Yogurt is a mixture of milk and live active cultures called probiotics,

Third jab authorised across Europe A third Covid vaccine dose has been approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for the general population following successful trials on volunteers aged 18 to 55 inclusive, although each member State will be allowed to decide for itself whether or not to do so. Spain has started already on giving a third jab to all elderly residents – but not staff – in nursing homes, and to

those with a compromised immune system. According to the EMA, the third dose should be given six months after the second, but it has authorised this in the immune-compromised for 28 days. Health minister for Spain, Carolina Darías, says her department has ‘always been guided by the EMA’, but has not as yet made a decision about a third dose for anyone other than those currently receiving it.

live organisms that help promote gut health by populating the colon with beneficial bacteria.

Popcorn Air-popped popcorn is a whole grain. According to findings from a study, swapping refined grains for 100 percent whole grains encourages the body to burn calories and help reduce body fat. Quinoa One cup of cooked quinoa contains 8 grams of plant-based protein, helping pump up the protein of any meal. This protein can increase satiety and lead to less overall calories consumed throughout the day, promoting a decrease in belly fat. Salmon One 4-ounce serving of salmon packs in 23 grams of protein, so adding salmon to your meal can help you feel full longer due to protein’s effect on increasing satiety. This long-lasting satiety can help reduce overall calorie consumption which is beneficial for weight loss. Cannellini beans Cannellini beans, also known as white kidney beans, can be a great addition to your diet because they are high in soluble fiber. Among many other benefits, research shows that soluble fibre may help decrease fat around the waist. Chickpeas Foods that contain vitamin B6

may help combat water retention. Roasted chickpeas also make a great substitution for more caloric and less nutrient-dense foods like crisps. Tofu Tofu is a plant-based protein that supports feeling full longer. Eating a diet that is full of ample protein helps support fat loss. Additionally, there is research that suggests that soy specifically may support weight loss. Cinnamon Both flavorful and nutritious, cinnamon can help with reducing belly fat. Compounds in this tasty spice can

help reduce lipid accumulation in fat cells, supporting weight loss. Garlic Garlic makes everything taste better and as it turns out, can aid in your weight loss goals. A recent systematic review and meta-analysis found that garlic supplementation supports a decrease in waist circumference. Curcumin Another tasty way to spice up your meals! Curcumin, one of the active compounds in turmeric, has been found to support a decrease in weight and BMI.

Driving Through Tunnels Traffic laws must be strictly adhered to in tunnels or underpasses on account of the increased risk factors involved in this type of road route, with attention specifically to such matters as using headlights, observing speed and safe distance requirements and not stopping, parking, changing direction or reversing. When approaching most tunnels, a blue rectangular sign provides some key information about the tunnel, such as the name and the length, as well as details about emergency help points within. The speed limit in tunnels is controlled with the R-301 mandatory maximum speed limit sign (a red circle with the speed limit in the centre), although many also have an advisory maximum speed limit, indicated by the S-7 blue square with white numbers. Before entering the tunnel, we will also see the R-413 sign, a blue circle with a headlight pictogram in the centre, telling us that it is always mandatory for us to use headlights. There may be other signs on the entry to tunnels such as the R-306 which prohibits heavy goods vehicles over 3,500 kg from overtaking. Some tunnels have indicators above the carriageway which shows if the lane is open or closed. This is sometimes by means of a standard red or green traffic light and sometimes by means of a green arrow or red cross. These indication signs must always be observed. All signs, whether fixed or temporary, visual, or audible, must always be adhered to. In tunnels or underpasses where the traffic flows in both directions, overtaking is prohibited, unless an additional lane or lanes are provided for this. A safe distance must always be maintained from the vehicle in front, with a minimum of 100 metres being required between each vehicle, the equivalent of a 4 second gap. Some tunnels have markings on the lanes to assist in keeping this distance. For those with no markings the four second gap can be monitored by counting the

time between the vehicle in front of you passes a fixed point and the time it takes your vehicle to pass that same place. In the case of vehicles with a maximum authorized mass exceeding 3,500 kg, the safe distance is increased to at least 150 metres or a minimum interval of at least 6 seconds. Tunnels of some length will have pedestrian exits and help points which are for use in emergencies only. The exits are indicated by the universal emergency exit signs of a pictogram of a figure about to leave a door, and often accompanied by the words “Salida” or “Salida de Emergencia”. The location of the closest emergency point is indicated by arrows on the wall of the tunnel. In the event of an emergency access point being in both directions, often a larger arrow will indicate the direction to the nearest emergency point or exit, which may be in front or behind. In the event of being involved in an emergency in a tunnel, you must: Switch off the engine, switch on emergency hazard lights and leave your vehicle lights on. If the emergency makes it impossible for the vehicle to continue, try to steer the vehicle to the area reserved for emergencies in the direction of travel, such as the hard shoulder if available, or an emergency layby. In the absence

of these features, you must try to stop your vehicle as close as possible to the right side of the edge of the roadway. Use your emergency triangles to indicate your vehicle is creating a hazard. All vehicle occupants must leave the vehicle and proceed to the nearest evacuation emergency exit. In case of fire, the driver must make every effort to ensure vehicles do not block the path of the emergency vehicles attending. Turn off the ignition, leaving the key, and leaving the doors open. All vehicle occupants must leave by the nearest available exit in the opposite direction to the fire. Hopefully, our passage through the tunnel will be without incident and as we leave the tunnel, we will see more signs. As well as the S-6 sign indicating the end of the tunnel and subsequent restrictions, we sometimes a change in the speed limit but always a reminder about our headlights. This S-24 sign is different to the R-413 as it is a blue rectangle which displays a pictogram of the headlights along with a question mark. Whereas it is mandatory to switch lights on when entering a tunnel, it is not necessarily mandatory to switch them off, as it could be night time or during a period of poor visibility, so this sign is an informative version reminding us to check if we need to continue with our headlights illuminated.

Correct Lane Use It is not uncommon for drivers to be fined for driving in the centre lane of a motorway, even when the road is clear. This is an offence and drivers who do so can be fined, but the reality is, other than we drive on the right in Spain, there is no difference to the UK, where “middle lane hogging” is also an offence. Looking at how the two countries compare on roads with more than one lane in the direction of travel, if we first look at the UK, and what Rule 264 of the Highway Code states. “You should always drive in the lefthand lane when the road ahead is clear. If you are overtaking a number of slower-moving vehicles, you should return to the left-hand lane as soon as you are safely past.” Comparing that to Spain, where we drive on the right, in fact the rule says as far to the right as possible, Article 31 of the Reglamento General Circulacion is where we see rules for normal traffic flow explained.

“On roads with more than one lane for the direction of travel, the normal flow of traffic is in the right hand lane, although you can use the other lane(s) when traffic circumstances dictate”, there is also an extension of the rule which states “provided you do not hinder the progress of another vehicle”. Although the wording is slightly different, bearing in mind the Spanish version is an interpretation for ease of understanding and not a literal translation, the concept is the same. Under normal traffic circumstances, unless traffic determines otherwise, in the UK we should always drive in the lefthand lane, in Spain we should always use the right-hand lane. The problem has always been one of understanding the rules of the road. The concept forms an integral part of UK driver training and has done for many years. You only have to look through historic copies of the Highway Code and you will see the rules clearly printed. But

it is a rule seemingly difficult for many to understand. In 2004, the UK launched a pilot scheme with road signs pointing out the correct lane discipline, and yet these were still largely ignored. More recently, the UK changed their procedure for dealing with drivers who remain in the centre lane, by changing the procedure for reporting the offence and making it punishable by fixed penalty notice, thus drivers can be fined on the spot and be 100 pound out of pocket. Back in Spain, the same process is already in place. That is why drivers are issued with on the spot fines, not because they are targeted for being foreigners or any of the other excuses that have been made, but because driving in the right-hand lane is the normal procedure for the flow of traffic, and the fact that “nobody else was around” is not a justifiable excuse for committing any offence.

Day One The first day was dominated by Terry Brindley on peg 22. This turned out to be the best peg on the water and was consistently in the prizes. Terry fished his usual paste tactics to catch carp for 41.36kg. In second place was Alan Davies with 22.86kg and myself, Ian Brown was third with 19.575kg. Both Alan and myself fished the method feeder with corn or pellets. Other section winners were Neil Bomford and Josh smith. The pairs competition was won by Mick Hill and Terry Brindley. Day Two The second day the weather had changed slightly and we fished in cloudy and blustery conditions. Winner on the day was myself Ian Brown. Drawn on peg 4, I fished the method feeder at about 15 or 30m on corn to take decent carp for 33.82kg. In second place was Josh Smith with 21.84kg and in third Richard king with 21.66kg, both using similar tactics. Other section winners were Dale Smith, Richard Smith and Danny Kerkoff. The pairs competition was won by myself and Neil Bomford.

Day Three The weather returned to normal for day three and we fished the match in calm sunny conditions. Taking top spot was Richard King, he fished peg 8 and again fished the feeder on corn which had by now become the dominant method and the pole lads were beginning to struggle. He caught carp all day at very close range for 33.44kg. In second place was Mick Smith who using similar tactics on the adjacent peg to Richard weighed 28.28kg. In third place was Brad Cannon who did the same but also caught a few on the slow sinking feeder for 27.24kg. Other section winners were Richard Smith, Keith Hirst and myself Ian Brown. The pairs competition was won by Bill Cannon and Keith Hirst. Day Four Going into the last day the overall competition was hotting up and the top three of Richard King, Mick Smith and myself were separated by less than 10kg and we all need a good day to secure the overall title. In fact as it turned out all three anglers did indeed have a good day. Winner on the day was Richard Smith, drawn on the favoured peg. Peg 22 he caught carp all day for 37.78kg. In Second place was Brad cannon with 29.25kg and in third place was Alan Davies with 28.53kg. Other section winners were Bill Cannon 25.25kg, myself with 28.500kg and Richard King with 25.35kg which proved enough to win the overall standings and this year’s festival. The pairs competition was won by Alan Davies and myself, Ian Brown. Great thanks to the hotel for arranging licences etc and to everyone that took part.

TaLES from ThE Top fLiGhT for Antonio Conte, the first sign that a wad of moolah means they don’t care that much about “entertaining football”. Others are suggesting Eddie Howe would be great - forgetting that when Bournemouth started to spend money on his watch they got relegated. Mind you, Howe is probably waiting for the Southampton job as he doesn’t like going too far away from home. The most sensible name being linked so far is Graham Potter, though you have to wonder how long it is before Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard are in the mix. Has anyone got Zidane’s number?

Well, it is not often I open a column with the blaring statement of “thank goodness for Newcastle United”, I can tell you. Just in case we were starting to miss international football just a little bit too much, UEFA felt compelled to treat us to such delights like the Nations League final stages (woo) and Andorra vs England (double woo). The weekend provided us with a fairly standard World Cup Qualifying evening as England breezed past the Andorrans, Scotland won with plenty of drama and Northern Ireland reverted very much to their mean and failure. Throw in Wales’ goalkeeper doing something utterly hilarious and all was normal. Not that anyone in the football world actually noticed, oh no. Everyone outside of the city of Newcastle was up in arms at the news of Mike Ashley finally handing over the club to new owners. Legally, we have to make it very, very clear that Newcastle United have not been taken over by the Saudi Arabian royal family, OK? The club is now owned, mainly, by an investment fund set up by, er, the Saudi Arabian royal family. Naturally, many people inside football and out have suddenly discovered a moral backbone and are shouting their disgust that a football club can be owned by people with a track record of human rights issues -

and no, we are not talking about Sports Direct here, he’s sold up (do keep up). The same people are surprised that the Premier League have suddenly changed their stance on the takeover - a shift that has absolutely nothing to do with a sheikh being mates with Boris and calling in a favour, you understand. “How can a country with a dubious record of atrocities abroad be involved in the beautiful game?” people are crying. “Surely this is sportswashing or something?” without fully grasping the fact that you could make a strong argument for the Premier League being that itself. It has even got Newcastle fans asking themselves some very big questions - mainly, “who will the new manager be?” Rumours that the Saudis asked

Amanda Stavely to find them a new castle to buy and are now fuming that they’ve been landed with a very average football team are completely untrue, as are the vast majority of the transfer rumours now doing the rounds. A penny for the thoughts of Steve Bruce? Well, he’ll get more than a penny for them with an £8m golden goodbye being lined up and probably delivered by the time you read this. Graeme Jones will look after the team, hopefully in a better manner than he looked after Luton Town, before a high-profile boss gets a oiltanker full of cash thrown in his direction to take over. Rafa Benitez has already ruled himself out, perfectly happy at another club that has/had more money than sense. Some Newcastle fans are calling

A new manager is one thing, getting the right players in January is another and thanks to Ashley’s frugal approach to club management, Newcastle could be able to spend £200m in the next window and not break any financial fair play rules. Therefore, every player that didn’t get a move in the summer is now being linked to St James’ Park - step forward Jesse Lingard, Kalidou Koulibaly, James Tarkowski, Mauro Icardi, Aaron Ramsey, Gareth Bale and, of course, Philippe Coutinho. Others are suggesting Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe are within reach. Hell, why not get both? Having the money to spend is one thing - spending it wisely is another, isn’t that right Everton, West Ham (under the Icelandic lot), Leeds (hello Mr Risdale) and Mr Ed? Anyone who thought Ashley might now be done with football, think again. He’s got his eyes on the Championship version of the House of Fraser, Derby County. In non-Newcastle news, Bruno Fernandes is currently tapping up Leeds’ Raphinha as they are best mates and hey, United don’t have enough wide attacking types. He might be better off trying to find a friend at Barcelona and grease the wheels for Danny van der Beek to move there as, apparently, there’s interest from the Catalans. Again, I wish I was as broke as Barcelona. Ronaldo would like United to sign Juve wideman Enrico Chiesa which can only mean one thing. United will sign Juve wideman Enrico Chiesa.
