2021 Poppy Appeal launched on the Costa Blanca Saturday saw the official launch of the royal british Legion Poppy Appeal, enjoying, for the first time in two years, the pomp and ceremony that the occasion has missed so much. hundreds of veterans from across district north attended the launch parade which, since its inception, has been led by the highly acclaimed torrevieja Pipes and drums. Once again the impressive display strode out along benidorm’s Levante promenade, standards flowing in the breeze,

followed by former servicemen of all nationalities and services, including many members of the rnA, rAAFA and rMA. Caught up in the occasion, residents and holidaymakers alike stopped to show their support as the immaculately dressed Standard bearers, marshalled by former royal Artillery veteran, Jack Kemp, marched along the route, heads held high as they demonstrated their pride in representing the foremost british Military Charity.

the parade of ex servicemen marching behind the pipes and drums was once again led by two inmates from the royal hospital Chelsea, Arthur “Skippy” teasdale, now aged 91, and his young minder, Wayne Campbell, a mere 83, both resplendent in their distinctive scarlet uniforms. Skippy and Wayne, both members of the Orihuela Costa branch of the rbL, are regular visitors to the area. they were all accompanied by the Mayor of benidorm, toni Perez Perez,

and other principal guests, Joe Falzon, the Vice Chairman of the rbL, the british Consul in Madrid and Alicante, SarahJane Morris, Captain ian Clarke rn, defence Attaché Madrid, bob Chambers, the rbL Overseas Membership Support Officer and Fiona hedges, the Overseas Membership Support Officer. Mr don Cubbon, attending his final parade as Chairman of district north, spoke of the hard work that his members had carried out over the previous year, which despite being so badly affected by Covid 19, had raised in excess of €75,000 he also emphasised that ALL of the money is used to help ex-servicemen and their dependants here in Spain, in their time of need, mentioning just a few of the 200 cases that had received rbL support in the previous 6 months. the Mayor of benidorm, toni Perez then addressed the large audience, welcoming all participants as he took the stage. he said how delighted he was to host the Launch of the Poppy Appeal once again, highlighting the multicultural and multinational makeup of the city. he was then presented with an rbL plaque by don Cubbon, on behalf of the rbL in Spain. the Chairman said that it was given in heartfelt thanks for

See page 12

the support and encouragement that the Ayuntamiento and the people of benidorm provide to enable the launch of the annual launch of the Poppy Appeal in this wonderful city. in reply the mayor said that the royal british Legion “is a role model” and that the organisation can always count on the support and encouragement of his council. there were further speeches by the rbL Vice Chairman, the Consul and the defence Attaché, all of which reiterated the outstanding work carried out by the rbL across the world but especially here in Spain where the support network id second to none. the ceremony ended with rapturous applause as the Standard bearers and the torrevieja Pipes and drums marched off before many dozens of spectators, both english and Spanish, descended on Skippy and Wayne, to pose for photographs. if you are a veteran visiting or living in Spain and you would like to know more about the royal british Legion or their activities here in district north, please contact your local Legion branch, details of which can be found at http://counties.britishlegion.org.uk/ counties/spain-north/the-district-itsbranches

Brit tourists outnumbered for first time the tourist profile in Spain has changed since the start of the pandemic with French visitors outnumbering british tourists in the past 18 months for the first time in history. in fact, entries from France have doubled those from the UK: between March 2020 and now, approximately 6.2 million French nationals have taken their holidays in Spain, compared with 3.1 million brits. Since the start of the Covid crisis, one in five of Spain’s 25 million foreign visitors have been French, according to the national institute of Statistics (ine). nationwide, about half as many foreign holidaymakers as August 2019 visited Spain in August 2021 - around 5.2 million. however, the trend may soon start to reverse, given that, for the first time since spring 2020, the UK government has removed restrictions on entry to the country for travellers from Spain. For those visiting britain or british residents returning from a Spanish holiday, as long as they are vaccinated - no quarantine is now necessary for fully-immunised people not travelling from a ‘red-list country’ and, for england at least, only one test is required on day two. this means the UK’s October half-term week may bring forth an influx of british tourists, and

their numbers may rise next year over the spring and summer. but while the restrictions were in place, the predominant nationality among international holidaymakers in Spain was French, and 20 percent of foreign visitor spending - €1.18 billion out of a total of €5.9bn – came out of French people’s purses. Brexit or Covid? tourism market analysts in Spain are now investigating to what extent the decline in british tourists relates to the pandemic and how much to brexit, given that the ‘transition period’, during which the UK was still, in practical terms, an ‘acting’ eU member, ended only a few

short weeks before Covid-19 hit europe. the fact that the two hurdles came more or less together means that the impact of brexit on UK tourism in Spain and other eU nations may not become completely clear for another year or two. if the pandemic is the key issue, it is hoped the reduction will be a temporary one. experts believe that british people are still keen to travel, but the much-reduced activity of tour operators such as tUi and Jet2holidays, which traditionally brought a huge number of british nationals on trips to Spain, has had a significant impact.

Free Spanish Course torrevieja town hall is offering a free ten week Spanish course in collaboration with Centro de estudios Königin. the course will have 60 places (on a first come, first served basis) open to foreigners who are resident in Spain and on the padrón in torrevieja. the ten week course offers around 40 hours of class time and will take place at Centro de estudios Königin, the language school contracted by the town hall to teach the course. the sign up period is open until Wednesday 27 October. Applicants can sign up for the course (with a digital signature) on www. torrevieja. sedeelectronica.es or can apply in person with a pre-booked appointment at the “registro

General”. those unsure how to do either of the above and who want to apply for a place are also welcome to contact the Pangea office in Plaza Capdepont (the little blue building) by email: pangea@torrevieja.eu or by phone: 600341431. to apply, prospective students will need to fill in an application form and verify their id. For eU-nationals then

this means providing a copy of the residency certificate plus a passport or eU-id. non eU-citizens will need to present their tie-card. british applicants that are residents under the withdrawal agreement can present either green certificate and passport or tie-card. even though it is a requirement to be on the padrón, then there is no need to present the padrón certificate as organisers can check the details directly from the town hall. Once organisers have a list of 60 participants, information will be passed to the language school and they will then organize different groups based on an evaluation of their level of Spanish.

Venus Cars launches new fleet of motorhomes for rent Spain is arguably one of the best countries in the world in which to travel in a motor home. the fabulous motorways mean you can reach your destination safely and easily and there is such an abundance of places to visit, you will be spoiled for choice. if you’re seeking seaside, mountains, traditional villages, breathtaking architecture – Spain has it all. Motor homing has taken Spain by storm this year with many people embracing luxury camping as a down to earth, authentic way to travel. Sales of caravans and campervans have gone through the roof since March 2020 with such holidays seen as a safe and enjoyable way to travel around Spain. Motor homes don’t come cheap though, so if you are not ready to invest in your own campervan, there is good news from the folks at Venus Cars. the family run company, trading in Spain for over 20 years, is branching out into motor home rental. As well as its normal business of buying and selling motor vehicles, the company has acquired a fleet of brand new campervans which they are now offering for rental. they are without a doubt a great way to discover Spain – simply arrange a rental at a time that suits you and travel at your leisure, at your own pace. if you have never driven a motor home before, don’t worry. the Venus team will walk you through everything before your journey so you know what you’re doing (and are prepared for all

the essentials like how to hook up to the mains on a campsite, how to switch the fridge from gas to mains, or how to deal with emptying the cassette toilet). if you have been considering buying a motor home, then renting one for a few days before you take the plunge is a great idea as it will give you a real feel for motor homing before you commit to purchasing your own camper. All of the campervans available to rent from Venus Cars come with fully legal comprehensive insurance for rented vehicles. they sleep four people and come fully stocked with bed linen, kitchen appliances (including hob, toaster, kettle, pots and pans), plates, cutlery and glassware – everything you need to enjoy your break, from a weekend away to a few weeks touring the best of Spain.

rental prices are very competitive. Simply get in touch (details in the advert below) for more information on prices and other details. MOTORHOMING IN SPAIN TOP TIPS If you are new to motor homing, check out our top tips to make the most of your rental with Venus Cars… • Many garages and some supermarkets have motor home services (especially along the coast) where you can fill up with fresh water and empty grey water. • Look for ‘aires’ which are dedicated motor home service points as these areas can accommodate overnight

stays, some have paid showers and most have facilities to empty the chemical toilet. A great app to download is Park4night – this allows you to locate motor home services, campsites and wild camping spots. browse the map or choose to search around a specific location. When planning your route (if you’re using a Sat nav or Google Maps) make sure to use the filters – these will make sure your route either makes use of or avoids toll roads, and can help you navigate around, rather than straight through, tricky small villages with narrow roads. Register for an ASCI camping card to avail of discounts at many campsites, sometimes as much as 60%. Motorhome ‘wild camping’ in the

Valencian region is not permitted. A new law which came into effect on 8th May 2021 prohibits overnight stays out of designated areas (i.e. campsites or ‘aires’). that said, there are so many excellent campsites in the Valencian Community to choose from – a website called Pitchup gives a good overview of what’s available by area. Other regions have different rules and many do allow wild camping as long as you don’t leave tables, chairs etc out overnight and of course, take your rubbish with you. Again the app, Park4night gives great tips on where to wild camp, with reviews and comments from other users about their experiences. • A fantastic new scheme called https://espana-discovery.es/ gives you access to off the beaten track

stays (like vineyards, farm stays, rustic restaurants and more. if you buy the guide, you can access over 200 places where you can stay for free for 24 hours with no obligation to purchase the products on offer – however, you might discover an amazing local wine, artisan cheese or a menu del dia that you just can’t resist!

You’re cash buyers! You have everything in place and are ready to buy! So why do you keep losing out on the home of your dreams? here are 3 reasons why you keep missing out on a home, and how to stop it happening again: 1. Your offer is too low - Ask yourself if you’re going around seeing how much vendors will accept as research, or are you making an offer with the intention of buying the property? if you’re looking at a home in your price range, making an unreasonably low offer will halt negotiations before they even get going. be prepared to offer full asking price if need be, if the home has everything on your wish list. Paying full price, doesn’t mean you’re overpaying. it means you don’t want to lose out to someone else! 2. Completion is too quick - A quick completion doesn’t work for everyone. be mindful and guided by your real estate Agent. Some home sellers need a little more time to move out of

the home. if you don’t want to lose it, you’ll need to be a little flexible on time. 3. Furniture - What happens if you want the furniture, but the vendors are not prepared to include it or sell it to you? don’t be unreasonable. it’s only furniture! this is a good excuse to buy new! there are furniture stores that sell complete house packages. You can easily furnish an entire home quickly, so don’t miss the home of your dreams just because the furniture isn’t staying! Why Chorus Financial are different? By Tracy Storer Senior Partner Chorus Financial Whether you are reading the local newspapers, browsing social media or google, or tuning into the local radio stations, there are certainly no shortage of Financial Advisers, but how do you know which one to choose? As many of you will likely know, Chorus are certainly not Spain’s longest established firm, in fact, far from it. Chorus was set-up very deliberately as an alternative to those firms. We entered an industry that we felt had little care for client outcomes and was purely focussed on how much in fees, hidden or otherwise, could be extracted from brits living in Spain. From our point of view, the very foundations of good quality advice – transparency and suitability – were about the last thing many of the established firms in Spain cared about.

Chorus began life with a clear goal; to offer the best service, the highest quality financial solutions, and all of that had to be coupled with transparent, fair fees, that were fully justifiable. to do this, however, we really had to explain to the public how the industry works. regulation isn’t all that strict in Spain, and that can mean people are tied into products with high, often hidden fees, and in many cases, inappropriate or low-qualityunderlying investments. We felt our first job was to properly explain how fees and commissions work, how common products like SiPPs, QrOPs, Spanish Compliant bonds can be of benefit in some cases, and not in others. We have now been doing this for many years, we’ve won major international

awards for our efforts, and i believe that along the way we have educated many 100,000s of brits in Spain. So why are Chorus different? Well, myself and theChorus team have been lucky in that we have been able to keep full control of Chorus and to always work to those initial goals we set. Although we operate under a major european financial services network, Aisa international, Aisa also share our aims and goals and have always fully supported, and indeed encouraged, our transparent, client-focussed approach. Unlike many in the industry, our business model is focussed on developing long term relationships with our clients, rather than obtaining high up-front commissions or fees. Over the years this

has allowed us to grow a large, happy, and loyal client base, giving us as a company incredible long-term security whilst allowing us to fulfil our client’s goals and desired outcomes. Whilst we might not be the largest, or indeed the longest established firm out there, we would like to think that our approach makes usthe best, and hopefully ourevergrowing list of happy clients would agree! if you would like to discuss your investment or pension needs here in Spain, please contact Chorus Financial for a free, no obligation consultation by emailing i n fo @ c h o r u s f i n a n c i a l. e s, calling +34 965 641 163 or visit www.chorusfinancial.es for more information.

Investment contracts are intended as medium to long term investments, and all investments have some level of risk. GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP With no crushing losses, the pound wandered through the week, hitting its highest level against the euro since February 2020 along the way, but eventually losing an average of 0.3% to the major currencies. the major supporting factor for sterling was the growing expectation of an interest rate increase from the bank of england before the end of the year, while the biggest deterrent was the ongoing labour and supply chain problems. Whether investors will have been reassured by the chancellor’s confidence that “there’ll be a good amount of Christmas presents available for everyone to buy” remains to be seen. Another risk for sterling had been that the eU would offer britain a northern ireland Protocol olive branch, and that brexit Minister david Frost would reject it out of hand. that was not how it went. Although eC Vice President MarosSefcovic’s final final offer did not exactly receive a warm reception, it has not yet been dismissed by the british government. two significant sets of UK data, on tuesday and Wednesday, were largely in line with analysts’ forecasts. the OnS said the UK labour marketis “continuing to recover”, with the total number of employees “returning to pre-coronavirus pandemic levels”. the appearance of wages growth was again inflated by temporary pandemic-related

factors. Figures for output, trade and growth were unremarkable and had minimal effect on sterling. EURO the euro came away with an almost identical result to sterling. it was a negligible net tenth of a cent lower against the pound after covering a range of less than a cent. eurozone economic data added little to the equation. Figures for the eurozone as a whole showed industrial production fell 1.6% in August, leaving output 5.1% higher than the same month last year. the biggest annual increase was belgium’s 29.9%, while the greatest decline was 4.2% in Malta. Germany’s ZeW institute reported a fifth consecutive monthly decline in German and eurozone economic sentiment. Philip Lane, the european Central bank’s Chief economist, put forward what was presumably the bank’s official line on inflation. he said in a speech that rate-setters should avoid being trigger happy in responding to short-term price and wage increases. his comments reinforced the idea that higher eurozone interest rates are some distance away. brussels hopes there will be a new northern ireland Protocol by Christmas. if there is not, it is unlikely to be the only shortage. Congestion at the big container ports (a situation not unique to the UK) coincides uncomfortably with broader supply chain and transport constraints.

A visit to ASIMEPP, the Fibromyalgia association of Torrevieja We were delighted to be offered a tour of ASiMePP this week by Coordinator, Mamen Veredas. ASiMePP is the Fibromyalgia association of torrevieja, helping sufferers of fibromyalgia and chronic pain. behind an unassuming front door on torrevieja’s Calle Concordia are the beautiful facilities used by the association for its activities – a colourful and inviting reception space, a large and fully equipped studio room used for the likes of yoga and tai chi, a spacious kitchen/multipurpose room used for crafts, talks and more. there are also treatment rooms and a private office where the social worker or psychologist can speak to patients. the association offers workshops and activities to members with each activity designed around helping fibromyalgia patients. As Mamen explained while she showed us some beautiful decorated jars made at a recent craft workshop, “every activity is designed to help, either physically or psychologically. even simply sitting doing crafts gives people the opportunity to talk about their experiences, to offer and receive support and advice. it is like a group therapy in itself.” becoming a member of ASiMePP offers sufferers of fibromyalgia and chronic pain the opportunity not only to participate in activities, workshops and talks, but also to receive important treatment such as hot wax treatment for sore hands, gym sessions under the guidance of the physiotherapist, sessions with a nutritionist, psychologist or social worker, reflexology and even aqua gym sessions at the municipal pool. Members also enjoy a special subsidised rate for yoga and tai chi

classes offered at the centre - all of which are adapted and based around gentle movement, tailored to suit those with chronic pain. Mamen said that nothing gives her greater satisfaction than to see a patient coming in for the first time, and to be able to look back a few months later at the progress they have made in managing their pain. the pandemic, of course, was a tough time for ASiMePP members. Many rely on the treatments and therapies to help them live a normal life and none of this was available to them during lockdown. Mamen explained that as soon as it was announced they could open up again, there was great excitement. their youngest member is in her teens and the oldest in her 90s – there are women and men of many nationalities although most are Spanish speaking or have a good level of Spanish given that the classes and workshops are often offered by the local Spanish volunteers. Workshops are also given by guest

speakers – for example, doctors and other health professionals or recently, a lawyer came to give a talk about labour relations and illness at work. Plans for 2022 include a number of days out and excursions so that members have the chance to ‘unplug’ from their condition. to become a member – either simply to support ASiMePP, or to use the facilities yourself – costs €60 for the first year and €50 every year thereafter. the centre is open from Monday to Friday 9am to 1pm and in the evenings on Monday, tuesday and Wednesday from 5pm to 8pm. Other ways to support ASiMePP include their annual charity race which takes place on the first Sunday of March every year. to find out more, have a look at www. asimepp.org or email asimepp@gmail. com You can also call into the centre on Calle Concordia 9, torrevieja or phone 966927140. ASiMePP’s slogan says it all: Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional.

No fines for cars parked Changes for La Marina HELP desk without ITV Car-owners cannot be fined, nor their vehicle impounded, if it does not have a valid current itV sticker unless it is actually being driven, according to a verdict by a Madrid court. Spain’s compulsory technical vehicle inspection, or itV – the british equivalent being the MOt – is carried out on all cars of at least four years old, every two years until the vehicle is 10 years old, when tests must be taken annually. Cars without a valid itV – either an expired one, or which are over four years old and have never had one – are illegal to drive and hefty fines will be levied if you are caught. Until now, you could even be hit with a fine if your car was parked and had an out-of-date itV sticker, but Madrid’s Civil Court number 33 has ruled this is not now be the case. the european Automobile Association (AeA) filed an appeal on behalf of a fined car-owner, stressing that, as the vehicle was not in movement, its having an expired technical inspection did not constitute a safety issue. According to the AeA, ‘the offence subject to a fine is the act of driving’ a car without an itV, ‘not the failure to undergo an itV periodically’. the court upheld the appeal and cancelled the fine. AeA figures claim the General

directorate of traffic (dGt), part of Spain’s ministry of transport, may have amassed around €200 million in fines in the past two years – a million fines at €200 each – from parked cars without a valid itV. in Spain, fines can be appealed against only for a limited time, typically a year. Once a test has been passed, the owner is required to display a sticker on the windscreen, in the top left- or right-hand corner, the correct way up, in a visible position and with all earlier itV stickers removed. Sometimes, a favourable test result comes

with a list of ‘minor faults’, which should normally be corrected before the next itV is due. Owners normally receive a letter telling them their itV is due – for new cars, the first of these usually arrives ahead of the fourth anniversary of its registration, or may come earlier if the vehicle has been a hire or courtesy car. After this, the itV is due before the end of that month every two years, then every year from the 10th anniversary of registration, and must be carried out even if a letter is not received.

For several years heLP Vega baja whose main centre is at San Miguel de Salinas have had a “heLP desk” in La Marina on a thursday. however, from the 2nd november the heLP desk will move to a tuesday from 10 am to 1pm in order to avoid the busy market day. it will continue to be housed n the hope Christian Fellowship Church. the last thursday the heLP desk will open will be this thursday, the 21st October. the heLP desk offers information and support to the community on all matters relating to life in Spain. President of the charity, Michele Masson said: “the heLP desk was set up to offer several of the services that the charity provides, to those living in La Marina. We are fortunate to have some very dedicated volunteers who give their time to help people in the community and are supported by the charity’s main office on any issue that cannot be dealt with locally. the charity has seen a huge increase in the number of requests for support as people struggle through some very difficult times. Attendance allowance applications for example can be quite daunting and the tie process has concerned many. Our volunteers have experience in

these, and many other matters, and can support people through the process free of charge.” if anyone would like help with either of these issues, they can call the San Miguel Centre in the first instance on 966 723 733 or email office@helpvegabaja. com to make arrangements for an appointment. it is the same number to call if you live in La Marina and feel that emotional support from one of the counsellors would be of benefit. Alternatively, there is a WhatsApp number to contact: 681 934 270. La Marina help desk will also be available on a tuesday for people to simply “drop in” for information or to complete new or renew a memberships with

heLP Vega baja, priced at just 10 euros per year. Full details of membership benefits can be seen on our website at www.helpvegabaja.com if you would like to find out more about heLP Vega baja and the work they have been doing for more than 40 years supporting people throughout the Vega baja community, please get in touch on the numbers above.

Lisdoonvarna in the sun Lisdoonvarna is a famous matchmaking festival which has taken place in Co Claire, ireland for over 160 years. Matchmaking is a very old irish tradition and the festival itself began in Lisdoonvarna when the visiting gentry came to ‘take the waters’ at the spa town. While there, they hoped to match their children with someone suitable from the upper classes. Parents would bring their children together at social gatherings, sporting events and musical evenings – and all being well, courtships would blossom. the festival grew and grew, and nowadays ireland’s most famous matchmaker Willie daly helps those looking for love to find it. his passion is to help hopeful singles, of all ages and nationalities find a life partner and have a lot of fun on the way. Since he started out as a matchmaker 50 years ago, following in his father’s and

Willie Daly

grandfather’s footsteps, Willie has set up around 3,000 marriages. Willie took over the matchmaking business from his father back in the 1960’s – and back then the job was mostly about helping shy farmers pluck up the courage to meet a suitable lady. the farmers, who often lived and worked on very remote farms, had poor social skills, especially when it came to socialising with women and ‘courting’. Willie carries around what he calls his ‘Lucky book’ – a precious notebook of love-seeking profiles which is about 150-years-old. he explains, “if you touch this ‘love ledger’ you’ll be married and in love inside of six months. if you are already married, you will recreate the honeymoon period you first had”. After lockdown, two irish men living here on the Costa blanca came up with the idea of inviting the famous Willie daly to Spain in order to host a

brian told us “every major newspaper in ireland has covered the festival! We’ve both done lots of radio interviews with more lined up and we have Willie due to be interviewed by rte (ireland’s national broadcaster) on Wednesday.” So, if you’re single and ready to mingle, make sure to get yourself down to Lisdoonvarna in the Sun all this week on Orihuela Costa. even if you’re not looking for love, but want to enjoy the music and atmosphere, you’ll be very welcome!

matchmaking festival in the sun. dermot Moore and brian Kiernan wanted to create a “bit of an atmosphere” again after everything was closed during the pandemic. dermot said, “Myself and brian came up with the idea of having a Lisddoonvarna festival in the sun here on the Costa blanca in Cabo roig and La Zenia. We have our irish world famous matchmaking king Willie daly coming to host this event in cooperation with all the bars involved in this festival of music, dance, storytelling and sing songs.” Lisdoonvarna in the sun takes place all this week – from the 19th to the 26th of October. there will be music, dancing and mighty craic in all participating bars throughout the week. Willie himself will be meeting and greeting people in all of the bars involved (check the event

Facebook page for more information, and check with the bar itself for details about their plans for entertainment - www.facebook.com/Lisdoonvarna2021-at-sunny-Cabo-roig). the bars involved are as follows: Milos, Cabo roig bar Liquid, Cabo roig Mc Cafferty’s, Cabo roig Smiling Jack’s, Cabo roig O’riordans, Cabo roig the trinity, Cabo roig the Cabo roig inn, Cabo roig el Faro, Cabo roig the Claddagh Café, Cabo roig Paddy’s Point, La Zenia the randy Leprechaun, La Zenia the interest in this mini Lisdoonvarna festival has been absolutely phenomenal with enquiries from all over the world for accommodation.

More cash for regions Details of the draft budget that Pedro Sánchez presented to Spanish parliament show a record-setting public-spending program for 2022 thanks largely to an influx of European funds to mitigate the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. The leader of the Socialist Party (PSOE), who heads a minority government with junior partner Unidas Podemos, is hoping to attract parliamentary support for an expansive budget aimed at fuelling the recovery following a record contraction of the economy last year. The spending plan includes more than €27 billion from EU funds that will go toward defence, industry, energy, science and infrastructure projects.

Regional spending Overall, the southern region of Andalusia will attract the most funds, €2.27 billion, followed by Catalonia with €2.23 billion, the Valencia region with €1.21 billion and Madrid with €1.15 billion. For the latter region, this amount represents a 7.9% drop in investment. The Basque Country will also receive 4.47 percent less than last year (€489.56 million). Overall the government is planning to invest €43.4 billion, some of it in direct investments (€11.2 billion) and the rest in transfers to regional and territorial authorities for them to invest as they see fit. The amount is a significant rise from last year, when

€29 billion was allocated for public investments. It is also more than the sum of all the investments made in the years 2012, 2013 and 2014, when Spain was in the grip of the Great Recession sparked by the global financial crisis. Defence and transportation Defence, transportation and the environment will get the lion’s share (67.2 percent) of the investment

funds. Some of the stated goals include developing more resilient infrastructures and ecosystems, and advancing toward digitalisation. The Science and Innovation Ministry is also set to receive a historically high amount, €3.8 billion, which will be used to create opportunities, retain talent and breathe new hope into the scientific community following years of underfunding, precarious working conditions and inefficient bureaucracy.

Social Security system The Social Security system accounts for one of the largest expenditures in the 2022 budget. Of the €181 billion allocated to the social safety net, €171 billion will go to pay pensions, representing a 4.8 percent rise from last year. Contributory pensions – those that require a certain number of years of contributions in order to be eligible – will represent nearly 40 percent of all social spending. They include payments for retirees, widows, people with disabilities, orphans and dependents. More tax revenue Although economic output and consumption will still take time to recover from the crisis, tax revenues are doing unexpectedly well. According to the draft budget, the state will this year collect nearly €215 billion, which is €2.1 billion more than in 2019. This means that it has made up for all the lost revenue in just one year, compared with seven years after the previous crisis. This rapid rise can be explained in part by the so-called “ERTE” furlough scheme, which helped maintain household incomes during the coronavirus pandemic, as well as rampant inflation, the increase in government workers, the drop in lowwage jobs that pay less in taxes, the growing use of credit cards over cash and the switch to the formal economy by individuals wishing to benefit from Covid-related subsidies, among other reasons.

No plans to scrap masks in indoors Spain’s government says it does not intend to relax rules on wearing masks inside buildings ‘just yet’, recalling that these will also protect the population from typical autumn and winter infections such as influenza and the common cold. Even though the country is now in the ‘low-risk’ category for Covid-19 infection, and hardly any restrictions are in place nationwide – except, in many cases, on numbers inside shops, and in a small handful of contagion hotspots – Health Minister Carolina Darías says it is still too soon to allow the public to ditch the masks. Since the summer, nobody is now required to wear a mask outside, unless they are unable to maintain at least a two-metre distance from the next person, meaning they are still compulsory in crowded streets. The majority of markets, concerts, fairs and other outdoor events also still require the public to wear masks to enter the area. Hospitals across the country continue to ban visits, and outpatients attending consultations are still only permitted one companion if

they are disabled, elderly or under 18 years of age. “We need to take it slowly, step by step,” says Sra Darías. “In indoor areas, we’re going to continue with masks. Autumn is here, and we don’t know how respiratory viral infections will come around this time.” The mask-wearing law will not be amended again until ‘the whole country is on risk level 1’, the Minister stressed. This is defined as fewer than 25 cases per 100,000 inhabitants,

or below 0.025 percent of the population – just under half of the current rate. Until then, not wearing a mask in an indoor public area such as shops, trains, buses, and in restaurants unless actually eating or drinking, continues to carry a fine of up to €100. Even once they eventually cease to be mandatory by law indoors, it is still advisable to wear masks in autumn and winter to protect oneself and others from colds and ‘flu.

New food waste law Spain’s government has just introduced the country’s first-ever law regulating use and disposal of edibles. The Council of Ministers has taken on board warnings from the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and its Sustainable Development Objectives (SDOs), which are based upon figures showing that a third of the human food produced on earth every year is thrown away uneaten. According to Spain’s ministry for agriculture, fishing and food, in 2020 alone, a total of 1.363 billion tonnes of food was binned. Putting this in perspective, says the ministry, it means every single person in Spain chucks out 31 kilos of food annually – the equivalent of the average body weight of a nine- or 10-year-old child per inhabitant every year. The negative effects of food waste mean that land for crops and grazing is used which does not need to be – often resulting in deforestation, or chopping down trees that provide oxygen and reduce harmful carbon dioxide emissions – chemical fertilisers are hard to avoid in mass production, which is why organic produce is more expensive as less of it is yielded in an average season, water is used for food which goes straight into the bin, and energy consumed and, with it, emissions that trap heat within the earth’s atmosphere, when it could have been saved. In the case of the meat industry, food produced and wasted means animals

bred and killed unnecessarily. It is no secret that enough food is produced on earth to feed every single one of its 7.44 billion inhabitants adequately, but that distribution means some communities starve whilst others waste, overeat or both – but even with current production volumes, 50 percent more than necessary is generated worldwide.

New Law Spain’s new ‘food-saving’ law aims to ‘steer towards a more efficient production system’ which ‘focuses on development of a circular economy’, and requires all industries throughout the food chain, from the primary or agricultural sectors through to tertiary or retail and hospitality businesses, to have a plan in place to cut waste. A ‘hierarchy of priority destinations’ for food that has not been used or sold will be introduced, and businesses which do not comply could face hefty fines. Unsold, but perfectly edible food should firstly be donated to food banks or other, similar charities; if they cannot be, but are still in a good condition, they should be used to make other types of food – for example, inferior shapes and sizes of fruit can be turned into juice or jam by manufacturers who cannot sell them to shops or supermarkets – or, if they are not ideal for human consumption but are not actually mouldy or toxic, should be used to make animal food.

If goods are unsuitable for consumption by any human or animal, no matter how they are cut, mixed or juiced, they should be destined for industry, to create biomass as a fuel source, or as compost. Fruit and vegetables that have ‘gone off’ could also, in theory, be buried in soil and allowed to grow into new crops. Everyone working along the food chain must be given full training by their employees on correct handling, storing and transporting, to prevent damage, and all industries working with food must have suitable facilities to ensure optimum freshness – such as enough refrigerator or freezer space, or refrigeration units for shipping. Supermarket food items which are getting close to their ‘use by’ date, or

which have gone past the ‘best before’ date but are still in good condition, should be sold at reduced prices and separated from those still ‘in date’, or can be donated. Bars and Restaurants Bars and restaurants also have foodsaving rules to follow – they must give customers the option to take home any parts of their meals they cannot eat at the table, at no extra cost. In practice, the majority of restaurants in Spain already do this – new expats, and holidaymakers, especially from northern European or North American countries, are often pleasantly surprised by how ‘manageable’ the portions are in size, meaning there is less tendency to feel ‘over-faced’ by an enormous plateful in a Spanish restaurant and,

in nearly all cases, diners can take the surplus home in a takeaway box. Anyone who finds themselves in that situation in Spain and thinks their leftovers will do them nicely for tomorrow’s lunch only has to ask and there is no shame involved – the philosophy of most restaurants is that, if you’re paying for it, then it’s yours whether you eat it all on the premises or not. Schools, hospitals and similar public institutions will have to make a conscious effort to avoid food waste, which could mean not overloading a pupil’s or a patient’s plate if the person stresses they are not very hungry, and will have to follow the same donationjuicing-animal feed-compost hierarchy as supermarkets and restaurants.

Expand your culinary boundaries There’s a whole host of ingredients out there that many may dismiss as waste, weeds or just plain wacky. But with a little know-how, these unexpected items can be turned into delicious dishes.

Watermelon rinds You may not have considered eating watermelon skin before but it’s actually very versatile. Grated rinds can be used as an alternative to cabbage in coleslaw or added to salsa. Pickled rinds are also popular in South Africa where they’re used to make a sweet jelly that’s sometimes served with cheese. Crab shell You can’t eat any old crab shell but soft shell crabs’ exterior are fine to eat. Basically, they’re regular crabs which are harvested just after they’ve shed their hard exoskeleton and while their new one is still soft. The crabs are particularly popular deep-fried. Stinging nettles Handle them correctly and nettles can be used in a whole range of dishes. Once wilted, they no longer sting but you need to wear gloves

when picking (although we recommend leaving this to the experts). Nettles grow in most moderate climates around the world and when boiled, taste a lot like spinach. They can be used in pesto, soups and even cakes.

Banana Skins It might sound bananas but there are plenty of ways you can cook with these fruit peels and it’s a fairly common ingredient in many parts of the world. Full of fibre, vitamins and minerals, it just needs to be broken down in a food processor or by cooking. Try banana peel chutney, spiced with chillies and garlic, or banana peel thoran, a coconutbased curry. Flowers There are a wide range of edible flowers out there just waiting to brighten up any salad, soup or dessert. A few common varieties include borage, day lily, hibiscus, hollyhocks, scented geraniums and viola. However, make sure you get them from a reputable edible flower supplier as flowers sold in the garden centre may be sprayed with chemicals.

Cauliflower and broccoli leaves There’s no need to throw away cauliflower or broccoli leaves. Make the most of the entire vegetable by roasting them in olive oil and a few pinches of salt to create kale-like crisps. Like other greens, they can also be sautéed or boiled. Lemon peel You might be surprised to learn that lemon peel is packed with nutrients so think twice before you throw it away. Grate the zest into salads, soups and smoothies. Save pieces of peel to use in fruit teas, fruit cakes or to mix into pastry before baking.

they will end up on a skip somewhere when the house gets cleared out. Even though my marriages failed, the dresses are lovely and are worth a lot of money, and it is heart breaking to think that my lovely dresses will be discarded. I got divorced, not once but twice. My first marriage failed after 7 years, my second is now over. I have two wedding dresses which at the time, I loved. The first is a frilly puff cream cake style - fashionable at the time in the 80s; the second is more stylish and was worn at our wedding the in 2002. Both marriages failed. I find I was keeping the dresses only

for sentimental reasons, but lately I have decided that they are just languishing in boxes. I have asked my nieces if they want them, but they have their own ideas, and I am not even sure if they plan to get married - youngsters don’t seem to be bothering these days. I want to get rid of them, but don’t know what to do. I can imagine keeping them and then at the end of the day

It is a pity that wedding dresses only get worn once, and are then kept in a box. And yes, you are right the dresses will probably be thrown away by whoever clears out your

Breast cancer: common misconceptions This year, more than 280,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. To help put your risk in perspective, here are four big myths unveiled: 1. Breast cancer doesn’t run in my family, so my risk is low. Almost 90 percent of women diagnosed have no family history. Instead, the biggest risk factor is just being a woman, so if you’re approaching 40, get a mammogram. 2. I can put off my mammogram for six months. Survival rates for the earliest stages of breast cancer are almost 100 percent. By stage III it’s more like 70

percent. Six months is enough time for a negligible lump to develop into something more severe. 3. Breast cancer mostly affects older women. Yes, risk increases with age, but that doesn’t mean younger women don’t need to be concerned. Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women ages 15 to 39. 4. Breast cancer is the biggest threat to women. Women are more afraid of breast cancer than of any other illness, but heart disease kills more women than all other cancers combined.

The mobile is the most frequent distraction behind the wheel

Once again, it is found that the manual use of the mobile phone while driving is still the most committed offence within the actions that involve driving distraction. This is what the results of the latest surveillance and awareness campaign on the danger posed by distractions at the wheel show, which the General Directorate of Traffic has carried out recently and which has been joined by numerous municipalities that through their local police, have established roadblocks in their municipalities. Specifically, the agents of the Guardia Civil Traffic Group have controlled a total of 304,126 vehicles that circulated on conventional roads and have carried out 8,295 controls in which they have denounced 6,708 drivers for carrying out actions that cause a distraction while driving. Of the 6,840 complaints filed, almost 43% (2,930) were for manually using the mobile phone while driving. It is important to remember that no one should use the phone while at the wheel, as it is known to be dangerous, even equating it with driving under the

influence of alcohol. Modification of the Traffic Law This month, the Interior Commission approved the Law that modifies the revised text of the Law on Traffic, Circulation of motor vehicles and Road Safety in terms of permit points and in which the loss of points is increased from 3 to 6 for driving while holding mobile phone devices. In addition, 327 drivers were penalised for the use of helmets or headphones connected to sound reproducing devices, other than mobile phones, a conduct that is prohibited because it is also a distraction while driving. Other actions most sanctioned involving a distraction in driving are reading (145), searching for objects (108), driving while eating (56), the use or manipulation of browsers, internet access screens, video players or DVD (51) or being distracted by other occupants of the vehicle (47). In addition to all these specific actions, the agents made 928 complaints for other violations that caused distractions while driving.

check Your Lights You have probably already noticed the nights getting longer, as daylight starts to fade earlier than during summer, and as we getting ready to put our clocks back shortly, it´s a good time to check that all of the lights on our vehicles are fully working. Until quite recently, all vehicles had to carry a spare set of bulbs, this is no longer the case. The Spanish government recognised that changing a bulb is no longer a simple task, and in many cases can only be done by qualified mechanics, and so carrying a spare set was pointless, if the ability to change the bulbs had been removed. However, it is still important to check all the lights on a regular basis, even those not used too often, such as fog lights. It is better to have an assistant to help you do this so that one of you can be in the car operating the switches, the other on the outside monitoring the results. Remember, check every light, headlights (including full beam), indicators and hazard lights (front and back), rear lights and brake lights, reversing and fog lights, and the lights that illuminate the number plate at the rear. If your vehicle is a modern one you might also have Daytime Running Lights installed. Although these lights are often more reliable than traditional lights, on account of them being LED´s, they should also be checked on a regular basis.

If you don´t have anybody to help you can still carry out the checks by using reflective surfaces such as shop windows or other parked vehicles. Make sure you do this in an isolated location though as you don´t want to confuse other motorists. If any of the lights have failed, make sure you get them replaced immediately as it is an offence to drive with defective lights. It is also recommended that light bulbs are replaced in pairs, as they do tend to dim in time, so if one headlight isn´t working, for example, replace both bulbs.

refunded passengers Spain growth forecast banned by ryanair lowered Ryanair has been accused of barring passengers who pursued chargebacks against the airline during the pandemic from taking new flights this year – unless they return their refunds. An investigation by MoneySavingExpert (MSE) has found that holidaymakers who sought refunds from their credit card provider have faced lastminute demands of up to £600 if they want to board a Ryanair plane. During the lockdowns, Ryanair carried on flying many of its routes even though most tourists were in effect barred by government rules from travelling. The airline refused to refund affected passengers unable to travel, leading many to successfully seek chargebacks from their credit card company, in particular American Express. Three of those passengers, who went on to make new bookings with Ryanair to travel this year, have been told they can only fly Ryanair again if they return the sum reclaimed. One passenger was given this ultimatum just hours before they were due to fly. Ryanair has defended its stance, claiming it has always been a “no-refunds airline” when the flight went ahead and that

its terms and conditions allow its position. Guy Anker, MSE’s deputy editor, said: “This is absolutely outrageous behaviour from Ryanair. It essentially had these passengers over a barrel shortly before their holiday at a point which turned excitement into stress and anxiety. To let them book a holiday and only tell them this news at the last minute shows no regard for fellow human beings.” He said the affected passengers said Ryanair had offered to return the money for this year’s flights if they did not repay the chargeback, but they stood to lose hundreds of pounds in accommodation, car hire and Covid testing costs if they did not travel. MSE’s campaigns team has now flagged the cases to the

Civil Aviation Authority. A Ryanair spokesperson said: “Ryanair flights that operate as scheduled are non-refundable – this is clearly outlined in Ryanair’s T&Cs agreed by the customer at the time of booking. They state that we may refuse to carry you if you owe us any money in respect of a previous flight owing to payment having been dishonoured, denied or recharged against us.” Last week the Competition and Markets Authority dropped its investigation into whether British Airways and Ryanair broke the law by failing to offer refunds to customers who could not legally take their flights because of restrictions. It said at the time that the airlines should have given them their money back.

In its new World Economic Outlook for October 2021, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) partly coincides with the Spanish government’s own macroeconomic forecast for this year and the next, but disagrees with its long-term deficit projections. The international organisation has reduced Spain’s growth prospects for 2021 to 5.7 percent, five-tenths of a point lower than what it said in its July update. And in 2022, the IMF is expecting Spain’s economic output to grow 6.4 percent, which is six-tenths of a point higher than its previous estimate. In September, the Spanish government released its own projections of 6.5 percent growth for 2021 and 7 percent for 2022. The IMF report also shows that Spain is expected to gradually reduce its debt and deficit levels this year and the next, but to make very little progress on these fronts from 2023 onwards, in contrast with the government’s own projections. In June 2019, Spain was emerging from a decade of austerity following the deep crisis of 2008. Brussels responded to the good news by lifting corrective measures after certifying that the country’s

deficit level had returned to below the EU target of 3 percent of gross domestic product (GDP). The optimism was shortlived. Less than a year later, the economy had shrunk by a record 10.8 percent as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, a figure unseen since the days of the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s. And the government was forced to roll out its fiscal artillery to deal with the crisis, including a job-retention scheme and deferred tax payments. The combination immediately pushed up the national deficit to 10.9 percent of GDP for 2020. Although Spain recently entered the coronavirus lowrisk scenario through a drop in infections driven by high vaccination rates, the economic

fallout remains considerable, and the Spanish Cabinet last week approved the blueprint for the 2022 budget, which it described as the largest public spending effort in Spain’s history. The Spanish government – a centre-left coalition of the Socialist Party (PSOE) and Unidas Podemos – is expecting to end 2021 with a budget deficit of 8.4 percent. After that, the goal is to bring the figure down to 5 percent in 2022, 4 percent in 2023 and 3.2 percent in 2024. The IMF agrees with the first part of this diagnosis, but believes that between 2023 and 2026 the deficit will remain above 4 percent of GDP. More specifically, it is expected to be 4.4 percent in 2023 and 4.2 percent thereafter.

Joy For Monte As San Miguel Pay The Penalty. In a twist not widely noted prior to pre-season, local clubs are for the first time playing in the initial stages of one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world, the Copa Del Rey, and in a double delight, the first match-up was against cross-valley rivals, Racing San Miguel. A pity then, the hype of playing in such a massive tournament didn’t translate to the pitch. From the off, both sides sparred and jabbed, like boxers circling each other in the ring, but without looking to land a decent blow let alone a knockout. To be brutal, what was on display was a bit boring for the watching, near capacity, crowd. Sadly, the game was halted for a lengthy period midway through the half for an injury to ALFREDO (10), who was subsequently carried from the pitch. Our understanding at this time is that the knee injury he suffered was a re-occurrence of a previous problem and was quite serious. We’ll obviously attempt to keep you posted on his progress and situation. The half’s only goal (and only real clear-cut chance) was when PACO (21) was unceremoniously upended in the box and despite some appalling gamesmanship by the opposition, DAMIAN (20) crashed the ball home. This despite him having suffered a rib injury from yet another “robust” challenge earlier on in the game. The half-finished as it had started, poorly. HT:- Racing San Miguel CF 0 – 1 CD Montesinos The second half kicked off minus the aforementioned DAMIAN (20), sidelined with what subsequently turned out to be a far more serious injury than first thought. He was later ferried away from the stadium in an ambulance. At the time of writing, we still await news of his current status. On a pitch that was starting to resemble a war zone at times, long stoppages were the order of the day, as San Miguel also had players carried off, despite this arguably being one of the less physical games so far this season. Monte, for some unknown reason, perhaps their opponent’s profligacy in

tilinG

front of goal, decided to try and hang on to their slender advantage, play deep and soak up pressure, rather than pressing for a second, which surely would have killed the tie off. So it was, with a galling inevitability, San Miguel conjured up a leveller, not a pretty one, but one which they just about deserved for their second half efforts. All square then. The game then fell back into its initial inertia and although San Miguel tried, then seemed to have expended all their energy on carving out the equaliser. Monte, just looked poor. Missing their talismanic midfielder, out of shape with the enforced changes, they offered little to excite, in the middle or upfront. The introduction of PIPO (2) moved to a back five, which meant only one thing. FT: Racing San Miguel CF 1 – 1 CD Montesinos And so to the dreaded penalties. Often a cruel way to settle a game, the crowd and particularly Monte fans didn’t know what to expect, uncharted territory for both teams. After all the setting up (along with a large section of the home crowd who moved to the side and behind the goals), the drama commenced. The first two efforts hit home, 1-1, but then Monte missed (did it go over the line? Where’s a Russian linesman when you need one? VAR?). Then San Miguel scored, 2-1 to the home team. Tension building. Then Monte scored their second, all level at two apiece. Then the next San Miguel spot kick sailed high over the bar and into the night sky. Advantage Monte, when the next shot hit home, 3-2 to the Reds. San Miguel needed to net the next one to stay in touch, but, once again, power over placement saw them miss yet again. It only remained for Monte to dispatch the final kick, which was blasted in by KEVIN (18), down the middle, to give them a tough 4-2 win. An exciting end to an otherwise dour match. EVERYONE! Jurgey-lad would like to know if there is any better footballer in the world right now than Mo Salah. I spent a little time thumbing through the lists and, being honest, I’m struggling. Messi? Early retirement in Paris, last I heard. Ronaldo? Last seen storming down another tunnel after a United defeat. Kevin de Bruyne? Come back when you’ve won the Champions League, my friend.

At what point do we start to think that Ole Gunnar might have had long enough to come up with a coherent game plan for Manchester United? If I am being kind, possibly kinder than Paul Pogba, I could make a case for having too many attacking talents and therefore getting blinded by choice. But that’s rubbish really, isn’t it? United fans might just about to be able to stomach the fact that City and Liverpool have better managers than them, Chelsea too - but Leicester? Brendan Rodgers has been linked, and distanced himself, from the chatter at Newcastle but if United are thinking that a change is needed then they need to be considering Rodgers - if he can sort out the last eight games of a season, he is a winner and, clearly, United have issues with more than the final eight games of a campaign. Leicester’s win was won of the best

37

get “Gayley” on with cries of “you don’t know what you’re doing!” and “Brucey out”. Newcastle had, by this point, made all their subs - and they say Newcastle fans deserve better times? Brentford absolutely battered Chelsea in the last 25 minutes of their clash. The only problem was, they kept hitting the post and finding Eddie Mendy in the way who was, frankly, ridiculous. Romelu Lukaku has now gone six matches without a goal but that won’t worry Tommy T too much as his side top the pile. Raheem Sterling mentioned in the press that if he doesn’t get more games at City then he might have to leave forcing Peppy G to pick him for the big one, Burnley at home. Sterling kinda played, but City didn’t hit their heady heights - not that they needed to to beat Sean Dyche’s lot. City normally win this one 5-0, so I guess a 2-0 defeat is progress for Dyche.

King Klopp has been on fire with his very-quotable statements in the last seven days but this one actually makes sense. Pound for pound, it has to be Salah right now which is probably why Liverpool could cash in on him rather than pay him what the best footballer in the world tends to be paid in this day and age. Salah scored yet another worldy - albeit against Watford - and the goal managed to overshadow Bobby Firmino getting a hat-trick and Sadio Mane getting his 100th Premier League goal. Watford brought Claudio Ranieri in to prevent them going down and if his cunning plan is to play Danny Rose in a back three then I am even more worried for the Hornets than I was a week ago.

Ralph Hassenhuttl had warned that fans could not expect a 5-star dinner versus Leeds but turned up dressed for one just in case. Leeds were always going to struggle without Bamford, Phillips and Raphinha and struggle they did - Armando Broja scoring the winner for the Saints. Premier League matches in recent memory - classic goals, great saves and a central defender falling flat on his backside gifting the opposition a goal. In all fairness, the Foxes could and should have had seven. United did not really deserve their two, especially after committing the cardinal sin of conceding less than a minute after scoring. Paul Pogba gave a blunt interview post-match summing up the issues he saw whilst, bizarrely naming each of the issues that he has been the poster boy for over the last few seasons. Needless to say, Solskajer didn’t agree and felt that United do not need to be more mature and stopped before it became a press conference game of ‘you grow up, no you grow up’. The party atmosphere at Newcastle didn’t last very long, did it? Putting the unfortunate illness in the stands to one side, of course, two minutes into the game it felt like an entirely new era at St James’ Park. By the belated half time, not so much.

Steve Bruce came out fighting during the week, like someone who had a big birthday party being overshadowed by someone’s engagement announcement. “But it’s 1000 games, respect me” was very much the vibe as many silently noted, “but what have you actually achieved in those 1000 games, Steve?” Still, at the time of writing he’s still the manager of his hometown club. At the time of reading might be an entirely different scenario. Harry Kane finally scored a Premier League goal again as Newcastle’s new owners were left with very little doubt that £200m in January probably won’t be enough. Jonjo Shelvey, I’m guessing, is as much part of the plans as Bruce himself. Eric Dier managed to take this weekend’s calamity award, inexplicably making the last five minutes way more stressful than they needed to be. Yet, neither Bruce, Shelvey or Dier was the biggest idiot on the day - that award went to the Newcastle fan screaming at Bruce to

There was a lovely little derby day comeback from Wolves, beating Villa 3-2 having been 2-0 down. Dean Smith criticised Villa’s game management you don’t say, Dean? Norwich picked up their second point of the season and could have had all three had Josh Sargent chosen to kick the ball harder than the effort of a three-year-old against Brighton. Potter’s men should have had a penalty too and, here’s a sentence I didn’t expect to be writing in October, missed out on finishing the weekend level with City - mind you, they are still in the Champions League places so it’s not all doom and gloom. I don’t think I am alone in believing Everton did not deserve anything from their match with West Ham purely for what Jordan Pickford was wearing. Short-sleeved and multi-coloured, it is quite possible the kit designer was having a USA 94 moment. Oh, Ogbonna scored the winner for the Hammers. They really are quite good, you know?

idea Lacking Elche cF Lack Points On Sunday 17th Elche CF travelled to the south west suburbs of Madrid to take on Rayo Vallecano at the Vallecas stadium.

Perhaps the most memorable moment of the match was caused by the home fans. The radical followers of Rayo, located in the stand behind the goal, have a reputation throughout Spain of piling on the pressure for the away goal keepers. Kiko Casilla fell foul of this in the 93rd minute when the fans threw an extra ball onto the pitch during an attack by Rayo. Casilla was quick to remove the ball, but instead of giving it to the ball gatherers, he launched a strong kick against the fans, earning himself a yellow card for

this ugly gesture.

Fran Escriba was forced to field a starting line up with 6 changes, which especially for the defence proved both unsettling and fatal. Elche started in the usual way, giving possession to the locals, so it was with some surprise that they created the 0-1 scoreline after just 14 minutes. The Argentine forward, Lucas Boye, surrounded by rivals managed to find the gap to execute a shot that Dimitrievski did not even glimpse. Rayo soon responded and in the 26th minute Santi Comesaña made a comfortable cross from the front that debutant Mario Hernández managed to guide into the goal, putting a draw on the scoreboard. In the final

seconds of the first half Benedetto missed a clear chance for Elche after a cross from Fidel, who decided to offer his teammate a scoring opportunity despite having a clear corridor to have fired a shot.

After the break, the rhythm dropped and the chances were not so common. Both managers made changes, but it was Iraola’s decision to bring on Nteka which proved to be the game changer. Gaining possession of the ball just after the half way line he unleashed a long right footed shot which slipped in past an unresponsive Casilla. With 3 points in the bag, Rayo fought tooth and nail to hold onto their lead, including employing time wasting

tactics for which the referee added an extra 8 minutes. Next week is a busy week for the Franjiverdes. The EuroTourGuide Coach is already available for booking for Elche CF’s home fixture against Espanyol at the Martinez Valero on

Saturday 23rd October for a 18:30 kick off. The team will then travel to the Basque Country to play relegation zone placing Alaves on Tuesday evening before facing Real Madrid at home on Saturday 30th for a 2pm kick off.
