Regional president calls for Brits to stay more than 90 days Valencia regional government president Ximo Puig has asked tourism minister reyes Maroto to create a system allowing british nationals to stay in Spain longer than the stipulated 90 days in every 180. the issue came up once again recently

at the World travel Market in London, where Spain always has a pavilion with a number of individual towns holding stands within it. Although the ‘90-day rule’ is standard for the passport-free Schengen zone – meaning that, if a resident and citizen

from a country outside it spends 90 days in Spain, he or she cannot, for example, then spend a week’s holiday in France until the 180 days are up – nonSchengen European Union countries have always enjoyed some flexibility. Spending 183 days in a calendar

year in Spain automatically makes a person tax-resident in Spain, but british nationals who do not wish to commit themselves entirely to Spanish life in this way have often spent four or five months of the year at their holiday homes in the country, or popped back

and forth throughout the year, and still been able to take breaks in other Schengen countries. All this changed when brexit became effective – now, a british national caught overstaying their 90 days in every 180, if they are not resident in Spain, could be ordered to leave, fined and banned from returning to the Schengen zone for a set period of time. brits with residence in Spain are safe from this, and can still spend several months of the year in the UK if they wish. Otherwise, non-residents from the UK need a visa. Ximo Puig is concerned that the 90day rule, which automatically kicked in post-brexit, will not only affect brits with existing holiday homes in the region, but also resident brits – their family members in the UK are restricted as to how long they stay with them.

Winter fares drop planned by Ryanair ryanair says it is expecting to cut fares this winter to help boost passenger demand. While the airline has seen business picking up recently, it warned it was still recovering from the Covid-related collapse in air travel. ryanairreported a narrowing of half-year losses, but warned its annual deficit could hit €200m (£170m). boss Michael O’Leary said the industry was seeing a “very strong recovery” across Europe. however, he said heavy price discounting would be needed to fill aircraft this winter. Keeping prices low and passenger numbers high would “set us up strongly for a very strong recovery”, he said. Mr O’Leary added that the number of empty seats per plane would shrink from around 20 percent to under 10 percent

by next summer. the airline expects to return to profitability in the year ending March 2023. “We’re seeing very strong recovery in short-haul travel across Europe and it is being led by ryanair,” he said in a recent tV interview. he said there had been a “dramatic” recovery in passenger numbers, from eight million in the three months to June to 31 million in the following three months. the recent school holidays had seen ryanair “full to the gills as people got a last bit of sun”, Mr O’Leary said. but that did not mean the hit to the industry from the coronavirus pandemic was over, he added. the carrier reported an aftertax loss of €48m for the six months to September, which compared with a loss after tax of €411m a year earlier. ryanair

carried 39.1 million passengers in the six months to the end of September, 54 percent fewer than in the same period of 2019. the airline is expecting to make of loss of between €100m-200m for the full year, but Mr O’Leary said the guidance could not be more specific because there was still “little visibility” on ticket prices and recovery. but he said the post-pandemic recovery offered the best growth opportunities of his three-decade career. in September, ryanair lifted its passenger growth target. the airline now expects to fly 225 million passengers a year by 2026, up from 200 million previously forecast. the airline reiterated it expects to return to pre-Covid profitability in the year ending March 2023.

he is also worried that UK nationals who had planned to buy holiday homes in the Comunidad Valenciana, perhaps after their retirement with a view to splitting their year between the two countries, may decide not to do so if they are limited as to how much use they will get out of them. Additionally, Puig’s government is worried brits who already have holiday homes in the region might start trying to sell them en masse, and that those who spend their time in the Comunidad Valenciana in caravan sites and holiday parks instead of in a property they own, or who bring their own camper-vans or touring caravans, may drift away. Puig urged Sra Maroto to create some sort of system which ‘eliminates the bulk of the bureaucracy’ involved, so that ‘brexit is as non-brexit as possible’. National support it appears, though, that Spain’s national government tourism ministry is very much on the same page as Puig: Sra Maroto assured that she has ‘set up a working group’ involving the british and Spanish embassies in either

country ‘to address mobility’. Puig has called for her to ‘speed up’ the process in order to get an agreement in place as quickly as possible. Many affected british nationals have complained the restriction is a ‘one-way street’, pointing out that the UK allows Spanish nationals to stay in the country for up to six months, although this is because different movement régimes apply: Spain, and the other 26 EU member States, are effectively treating the UK the way it would any other third country – bilateral agreements notwithstanding – whilst the UK, as a third country, makes decisions as an individual on how to approach relations with the rest of the world, EU nations included. Puig’s and Sra Maroto’s conversation suggests, however, that the default position of the EU vis-à-vis specific nonmember countries may be possible to amend via bilateral agreements between a third country and a given EU member State, particularly where some EU countries have a certain type of relationship with a non-member that others in the bloc do not. As Puig recalls, around 79,000 british

nationals are permanent residents in the Comunidad Valenciana, many of whom may have family still in the UK who might need, or want, to spend longer than 90 days per 180 with them, and around 30 percent of the region’s foreign tourists in the last ‘normal’ year pre-Covid, 2019, were british. this translates to around three million UK nationals visiting the Comunidad Valenciana, although only about 20 percnt of that number, or 600,000, visited the region in 2020. Brits priority A large amount of this was due to the pandemic and heavy restrictions on international travel, which turned out to be nearly impossible for the majority of countries – and which, in fact, means last year’s 600,000 was actually a very positive figure, given the situation. Additionally, the UK was still in the so-called ‘brexit transition period’ in 2020, meaning it was a member in all but name in most areas; the end of the transition, on January 31 this year, was when real changes were due to start. Either way, Puig stresses that the british tourism market – long-stay

Platform group founded to save Cala Mosca there was an impressive turnout of people on Saturday morning - 6th November - at Los Cucalos restaurant, Orihuela Costa, where locals gathered for an update meeting on Cala Mosca. the outcome of the meeting, and a similar one held in Orihuela City recently, is the formation of a Platform to Save Cala Mosca. the Platform will follow developments closely and be ready to mobilise members and take whatever action needed to save this last green, sea front area on Orihuela Costa from environmental destruction. Former councillor bob houliston detailed the history of Cala Mosca from the early 1990s when Orihuela town hall, as a result of pressure from developers, re-classified cheap agricultural land as eligible for house building. As a result, the price of land exploded and a house building boom was triggered. this dramatically increased the population of Orihuela Costa – but not the provision of basic

saturday’s meeting

services. Soon after this re-classification the developer, Gomendio, put forward a plan to build 1,500 new houses and apartments on Cala Mosca. in 2007 this plan was definitively approved by Orihuela town hall. however, a petition with more than 7,000 signatures, presented to the European Parliament by C.L.A.r.O in 2010 and the discovery of two protected species, resulted in building being halted. to this day, 14 years after the initial approval, not a single new house has been built on Cala Mosca. the European Parliament insisted that an independent environmental impact study be carried out before building could take place. in 2013 a study, not prepared independently but carried out by the developer, was presented to the Valencia government. After delays and public consultations this study was given favourable approval by Valencia in 2018. however, a firm objection to the

revised building project was raised by the traffic department of the Ministry of transport. its objection was based on the predicted considerable additional road use on the already saturated N332, which would result from the increase in population and therefore vehicle use with the main exit from the development being directly on to the N332. despite statements from the traffic department that their objections were binding and compulsory, on 2 September, 2021, the Popular Party and Ciudadanos coalition government of Orihuela - 14 years after the first definitive approval in 2007 - once again approved the plan to build not 1,500 but 2,200 new houses and apartments on this last emblematic natural area on

the Orihuela Costa coast. Favouritism At the meeting Javier Gracia, one of the current Cambiemos councillors, described further examples of how successive Orihuela local governments have gone out of their way to meet the demands of the developer Gomendio to maximise building land on Cala Mosca. these included exchanging Cala Mosca land designated as green area to land in Orihuela city, 30 kilometres inland and avoiding the obligation to build a school on Cala Mosca by building the Alameda de Mar Civic Centre on the other side of the N332. both Cambiemos and C.L.A.r.O claim this was done through ‘fictitious price fixing’ to give the appearance that

the transfer was economically neutral. the Saturday meeting was presented with the question as to whether this second definitive approval on 2nd September should be considered as the unstoppable go ahead to the major building project and the environmental destruction which would result. the sentiment of the meeting was a resounding ‘no’. the people of the municipality will fight to ensure that this is not the end of Cala Mosca as we know it today, an environmental treasure for walkers, cyclists, users of the secluded coves, the dog beach and nature lovers. the Platform to Save Cala Mosca will be the vehicle for keeping citizens informed and for mobilising protests whenever called for until this decision is overturned.

to complete your sale?

When selling a property in Spain there are taxes and fees that you’ll be liable to pay for, as a vendor. One charge in particular is called the “Plusvalia”.

right now Lawyers are still very wary of the “Plusvalia” and are and will continue to retain this amount on account for a while, just in case the town hall makes a claim.

this is charged by your local town hall and is an increase in the land value from the time the property was purchased to the time when it is sold. the amount differs drastically from town hall to town hall.

My advice would be to continue to calculate your figures taking the Plusvalia into account, and if it is not claimed by the town hall, you will receive it back at a later date.

Many people over the years have complained about this cost, as they were continuing to be charged even when prices and values dropped.

it is always advisable to take guidance from your real Estate Agent or Lawyer regarding all fees you’ll be liable for, when you complete your sale.

it has been an ongoing battle for years with the town halls, and has been passed through the courts declaring they cannot continue to charge this fee. So where does that leave you as a vendor ready

Missing Financial Adviser? Maybe your financial adviser has retired or moved away and the parent company has allocated you an adviser you have never met, it might now be the perfect time for an independent review by a local adviser. if you are currently paying a financial adviser to manage your investments, but never sit down in front of your adviser to review your portfolio, then you are what we would call an orphan client. however good the funds looked when your money was invested, if the markets are not monitored and your funds assessed, then there is a danger that your money is not being managed to ensure the best possible returns.

if your current adviser does not offer this service, then you might wonder why you are paying an annual management fee. Many people had endowment mortgages in the eighties and nineties and were told that at the end of their mortgage, there would be enough money left over for that dream car or holiday. Unfortunately, as the funds were not monitored, most people found they had a shortfall and needed to switch to a repayment mortgage. the above is simply an example of how important reviews of your investments are to ensure your goals can be realised. if you would like to talk to an expert, then i would be happy to discuss your requirements

and recommend the best options for you. there are a number of financial advisers on the Costa blanca so the question is “why choose Seagate?” i believe that we offer a unique service to our clients. We have a fully staffed local office in benijofar with a back-up admin team, a Client Account Manager and a relationship Manager. this means that we have a team that will support you with six monthly reviews of your investment or pension and we provide full administration for withdrawals, encashments and tax guidance. Why Chorus Financial are different? By Tracy Storer Senior Partner Chorus Financial Whether you are reading the local newspapers, browsing social media or google, or tuning into the local radio stations, there are certainly no shortage of Financial Advisers, but how do you know which one to choose? As many of you will likely know, Chorus are certainly not Spain’s longest established firm, in fact, far from it. Chorus was set-up very deliberately as an alternative to those firms. We entered an industry that we felt had little care for client outcomes and was purely focussed on how much in fees, hidden or otherwise, could be extracted from brits living in Spain. From our point of view, the very foundations of good quality advice – transparency and suitability – were about the last thing many of the established firms in Spain cared about.

Chorus began life with a clear goal; to offer the best service, the highest quality financial solutions, and all of that had to be coupled with transparent, fair fees, that were fully justifiable. to do this, however, we really had to explain to the public how the industry works. regulation isn’t all that strict in Spain, and that can mean people are tied into products with high, often hidden fees, and in many cases, inappropriate or low-qualityunderlying investments. We felt our first job was to properly explain how fees and commissions work, how common products like SiPPs, QrOPs, Spanish Compliant bonds can be of benefit in some cases, and not in others. We have now been doing this for many years, we’ve won major international

awards for our efforts, and i believe that along the way we have educated many 100,000s of brits in Spain. So why are Chorus different? Well, myself and theChorus team have been lucky in that we have been able to keep full control of Chorus and to always work to those initial goals we set. Although we operate under a major European financial services network, Aisa international, Aisa also share our aims and goals and have always fully supported, and indeed encouraged, our transparent, client-focussed approach. Unlike many in the industry, our business model is focussed on developing long term relationships with our clients, rather than obtaining high up-front commissions or fees. Over the years this

has allowed us to grow a large, happy, and loyal client base, giving us as a company incredible long-term security whilst allowing us to fulfil our client’s goals and desired outcomes. Whilst we might not be the largest, or indeed the longest established firm out there, we would like to think that our approach makes usthe best, and hopefully ourevergrowing list of happy clients would agree! if you would like to discuss your investment or pension needs here in Spain, please contact Chorus Financial for a free, no obligation consultation by emailing i n fo @ c h o r u s f i n a n c i a l. e s, calling +34 965 641 163 or visit www.chorusfinancial.es for more information.

Investment contracts are intended as medium to long term investments, and all investments have some level of risk. GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP For several weeks, investors have been heavily expectant of an interest rate hike on 4th November from the bank of England, with a rise from 0.1% - an all-time low - to 0.25% widely predicted. instead, the bank of England made a surprise announcement that rates would remain unchanged despite mounting concerns around rising inflation. it was, however, signalled that the rate hike would take place “in coming months”. in response, the pound got hosed, dropping close to one US cent almost instantly. Governor Andrew bailey subsequently gave a “Who? Me?” interview, in which he claimed never to have committed to a November rate hike. investors were not amused, and the pound made further losses during the rest of the London session. Jointly with the Australian dollar, it was the week’s shakiest performer, losing an average of 1.2%. Other than the interest rate non-event, there was little to affect sterling. the purchasing managers’ index readings showed services enjoying a “sharp and accelerated rise in business activity”. Manufacturing was higher on the month but “constrained by rising supply chain disruption, staff shortages and declining intakes of new export work”.

EURO the euro sailed a mostly steady course this week and is on average unchanged, adding a cent and a half against sterling and losing a little over one US cent. Similar to the bank of England’s and the US Federal reserve’s decision to keep bank rates low and unchanged from their pandemic recovery benchmark, the European Central bank is not eager to take interest rates higher either, regardless of the similar concerns around high inflation. in fact, despite data last Friday indicating that Eurozone inflation is rising to a provisional 29year high of 4.1%, ECb leaders took it in turns to remind investors that the bank is firmly in the “transitional” inflation camp and sees no need for urgency in tightening monetary policy.board member isabel Schnabel even stated that a rate hike before the end of 2022 is unlikely – much later than what is to be expected from the boE. because the ECb is so openly opposed to increased rates, investors saw no advantage to the euro in the numbers, and the currency subsequently moved lower. Other indicators during the week included quarterly gross domestic product growth of 2.2% and slower monthly growth in the private sector. the composite Eurozone purchasing managers’ index put growth at a six-month low “as supply issues restrain business activity”.

June of Almoradi asks “On a Smartphone is there a way to take a photo with touching the screen”? Yes there is. both Apple’s iPhone and select Android smartphones allow users to capture a photo by pressing on the volume key in lieu of hitting the small on-screen camera button. this would turn the volume button into a hardware shutter button when inside the camera mode, and it could be useful in colder environments

where users may want to take a picture but don’t want to unsheath their fingers from the warmth of their gloves, or for those who don’t want to deal with the touchscreen. On some Smartphones you can also take a photo with your voice. Go to Settings when you open the camera to see if your phone has that option.

William of Benijofar asks “What can you do when you’re away from home and need to get online with a laptop or tablet, but there’s no Wi-Fi connection handy”? in that situation, the tethering feature of your smartphone can come to the rescue. tethering is where a mobile phone, or tablet with a mobile broadband SiM, is used as a modem. the mobile network connection of the phone or tablet is shared with any hardware capable of connecting to it. Mobile tethering provides

a connection to the phone or tablet, which another device can use to piggyback onto the mobile signal to access the internet. With a personal hotspot, the tethered device creates a Wi-Fi network that any Wi-Fi capable hardware can use. To set it up for Android go to Settings. • Select “Wireless and networks” • Select “Tethering and Portable hotspot”. • Select “Portable Wi-Fi hotspot” • Turn ON Portable Wi-Fi hotspot” Note the name of the hotspot. bydefault, it’s the make and model of the phone. this can be changed. • Select “Configure hotspot” and create a password. On the device you want to connect to the internet turn on Wi-Fi and select the name of the Wi-Fi hotspot set up and enter the password. To setup for Apple device. to set up a personal hotspot on your iPhone or iPad (WiFi + Cellular), go to Settings > Personal hotspot > Allow Others to Join and toggle it to on (if you don’t see Personal hotspot in Settings, tap Cellular > Personal hotspot). Make note of the Wi-Fi password.

Spain tackles childhood obesity by banning junk good ads Spain is set to tackle childhood obesity by banning the advertising of unhealthy food and drinks to children. The move was announced by the Minister for Consumer Affairs Albert Garzon who revealed that pushing items like biscuits, ice cream and sugary drinks to children via advertising will no longer be allowed. He said, “Our children are very vulnerable to advertising and it is our obligation to protect them.” Minister Garzon said that new regulations will ban the advertising of five categories of products to minors, regardless of their nutritional content. That list includes chocolate,

sweets and energy bars as well as cakes, sweet biscuits, juices, ice cream and energy drinks. The new rules also stipulate that other food products will also face strict regulation if they exceed certain limits for saturated fats, sugars and salt content. The consumer association OCU revealed that as many as nine out of ten food adverts targeted at children in Spain are for unhealthy products. The new rules, which are awaiting official cabinet approval, will impact adverts aimed at anyone under 16 via radio, in cinemas and on the internet, including on social

networks and mobile apps. According to the Spanish Agency for Nutrition and Food Safety, 40.6% of Spanish children between six and nine are overweight and 17.3% qualify as obese. The Spanish Federation of Food and Drink Industries (FIAB) said it was “surprised and outraged” by the move, as the sector has been working with the ministry for a year to update ethical practices in advertising. “We believe that food and drink manufacturers are being gratuitously and unjustifiably attacked,” said FIAB Director General Mauricio Garcia de Quevedo in a statement.

Fast food chain Burger King has transformed one of its Madrid branches to a fully vegetarian restaurant. For an entire month, Burger King on Paseo del Prado changes to Vurger King. Announcing the news on Twitter, Burger King Spain changed its profile picture to a new logo, titled Vurger King – a move that had followers initially think the fast food chain had made a major spelling mistake. However, it soon became apparent that the restaurant

was inviting customers to come to Madrid to sample the meatless menu. General manager of restaurant brands Borja Hernández de Alba explained: “We want to reach both people who base their diet on vegetable products and those who do eat meat but want to reduce their consumption.” Among the items on offer is the Plant-Based Whopper Burger, alongside meatless nuggets and the Long Vegetal,

inspired by the Long Chicken. The Long Vegetal features an imitation of chicken meat made from soy and wheat and if you remove the mayonnaise from your order it becomes vegan friendly.

5 WAYS TO SPOT DIABETES EARLY Early detection is key for managing diabetes and preventing complications caused by the disease. Experts at Quirónsalud advise that anyone with symptoms or risk factors should be screened. Dr Jorge Cid, endocrinologist Quirónsalud Hospital in Torrevieja and Alicante said, “One of the main drawbacks of this disease is that the initial symptoms are hardly noticeable, specifically in the case of type 2 diabetes, so when they occur they are ignored or attributed to other health problems.” Dr Cid stressed how important it is to carry out routine medical checks to detect the disease, since undiagnosed diabetes can cause various health problems (kidney disease, vision disorders, heart problems and more). Diabetes may be due to the lack of insulin secretion by the pancreas and/or the decrease in its effect, according to Dr. Cid and, given that this hormone has the job of transforming carbohydrates in food into energy, its defect causes an increase in blood sugar. SYMPTOMS OF DiABeTeS The specialist advises that there are five main symptoms to look out for: 1. Increased urge to urinate and feeling thirsty.

2. Weight loss. This symptom is more typical of type 1 diabetes and is usually accompanied by a continuous feeling of hunger. 3. Blurred vision. Excess glucose in the blood induces an increase in the loss of fluids from the body, including those that maintain the humidity of the lens of the eye, thus producing a sensation of dry eye. 4. Tiredness. Due to insulin deficiency, cells cannot absorb glucose and are left without an adequate source of energy to carry out their normal functions. 5. Frequent infections. Diabetes reduces the body’s ability to eliminate pathogens.

the fasting glucose level, is sufficient for a diagnosis, and with this the existence of diabetes in the patient can be either confirmed or ruled out. “In the event that the disease exists, the team of professionals works to find the most appropriate treatment to control it, in order to improve the health of the patient and avoid complications,” said Dr Cid. He added that, “a patient diagnosed with diabetes must lead a healthy life - diet and exercise being the first steps in the treatment of type 2 diabetes.” Ultimately, the Dr Cid was keen to stress that diabetes is a very common disease. According to the di@bet.es study, 13.8% of Spaniards have type 2 diabetes mellitus, which represents around 5.3 million people. “Of them, almost 43% of the total were initially unaware that they were suffering from the disease,” warned the doctor.

Free resuscitation workshops

Rafal town hall is offering free training workshops to teach cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Registration for the courses begins this week and remains open until November 30. The initiative was announced by Rafal’s Councillor for Health Francisco Jesús García, together with the Councilor for Citizen Participation, Gabriel Valero. The project, prepared by SAMU nurse and basic life support instructor María Abdul-Jabbar, “aims to train 15% of the population in these techniques to acquire knowledge necessary to save lives”, explained the Councillor for Health. Francisco Jesús García said that “with the improvement of the health situation derived from Covid-19, we can begin with the third phase of this initiative and make it accessible to the general population, which until now had only allowed us to carry out training for sports coaches and monitors, local police officers, some associations and

teachers.” He revealed, “it is planned to hold up to twelve workshops for eight age groups.” There will be a workshop aimed at parents, especially dedicated to paediatric resuscitation. Although they still do not have a definitive date, the workshops will have a maximum of 10 to 12 places depending on the age group, and will be held at the Youth Training Center. They will last approximately one hour for those aimed at youngsters, and two and a half hours for adults. Places are limited, but a waiting list will be made in case of cancellations or future workshops. The Councillor of Health wanted to highlight the importance of being able to open this project to all citizens, inviting “all Rafaleños and Rafaleñas” to participate “since it is of vital importance to have an informed population capable of reacting quickly in an emergency situation of this type.”

Stopping Distances Maintaining a safe distance is one of the fundamental factors of road safety, however it is not always easy to calculate how much space we need to leave between us and the vehicle in front, although there is a simple solution to a mathematical problem. We will start with the science bit. There are the two main factors that influence how we can bring our vehicle to a safe stop. The first one is the reaction time, defined as “the time between the stimulation of a sensory organ and the start of a response or a reaction.” Applied to an emergency while driving, it is the time between we perceive a danger and act on the controls of the vehicle to avoid a collision. The second factor is the braking distance, which, as its name indicates, is the distance it takes for our vehicle to stop completely from the moment we apply the brakes. We will add in two points of reference here. Firstly, we will define the word, “hazard”, which in motoring terms is, “anything, actual or potential, which causes a vehicle to deviate speed, course or direction.” The second point we will throw in here is that irrespective of maximum permitted speed limits on the road, we should always drive at such a speed which allows us to stop well within a distance we can see to be clear. Now that we have those basic elements in mind, we will analyse a hypothetical situation in which we are driving on the motorway and the vehicle that precedes us abruptly stops. Our natural reaction will be to step on the brake pedal as quickly and forcefully as possible to avoid the collision. The time that elapses between the perception of the danger, or hazard, and the moment we step on the brake pedal is the “reaction time”. During that time interval we will have travelled some distance before we actually started to reduce the speed of the vehicle. Once we depress the brake pedal, the vehicle will still continue to travel forward, and will do so for a variable number of metres depending on the state of our brake equipment, the

condition of the tyres, the suspension, and even the road condition, until we stop completely. This is the “braking distance”. Although there are many different factors which determine the actual reaction time and braking distance, we can establish equations based on common elements. For example, in the hypothetical situation that we have just described, it is likely that the reaction time would be 0.75 seconds, assuming the driver is alert and in good physical and mental health. If we are tired or distracted, the reaction time is significantly affected. However, maintaining our 0.75 second principal reaction time, if we are on a motorway and travelling at 120 kilometres per hour, our vehicle would have travelled 25 metres before we depress the brake pedal. The accurate braking distance is significantly more difficult to estimate, on account of the different parameters of each vehicle, road and environmental conditions, however we can generalise once again. A modern vehicle in good condition, on a good road in good weather will travel between 65 and 75 metres from a speed of 120 kilometres per hour. In total, during our hypothetical situation, we travelled 25 metres and 70 metres during our respective reaction time and braking distance, and so 95 metres were covered from the moment we perceived the hazard and our vehicle coming to a stop. Therefore, it is crucial that we had a minimum of 100 metres distance between us and the vehicle in front to allow us to stop in time. Again, we must stress the word, minimum. The more distance we have, the safer we will be. Remember these are optimum conditions we are talking about, but there are too many factors for it to be exact for every vehicle or situation. This, by the way, is the reason that distance marker chevrons are spaced at 100 metres apart on motorways. It is advisable to keep two chevrons apart from the vehicle in front, in other words, 200 metres, thus doubling our minimum safety distance.

We also mention the weather and environmental conditions. In wet weather the distance should always be at least doubled, although the roads are particularly hazardous during the first rain after a dry spell, so the more distance you can leave, the better. We have discussed motorways, but the same equations apply on all roads. If we are travelling on an area of the conventional road network where the maximum permitted speed is 90 kilometres per hour, and the conditions allow us to do that safely, then we will have travelled 18.75 metres during the reaction time and the braking distance for a modern car in top condition would be 40 metres, and so we will have travelled almost 60 metres from the moment we noticed the hazard. Our minimum distance on these roads therefore should be 75 metres, although again it is better to double it to 150 metres. On slower moving roads we should have at least 25 metres on roads where the maximum traffic flow is at 50 kilometres per hour, and 9 metres distance at 30 kilometres per hour. So, now we have done the technical bit, we promised a simpler solution. You might remember the “two second rule” from your days of learning to drive. Well, the good news is that you can still use a variation of that concept. Saying the phrase, “only a fool breaks the two second rule”, at a normal pace, even in your head, takes around 2 seconds. So, keeping an eye on the vehicle in front, watch as it passes a fixed point on the road, a sign, a shadow, a parked car, and say the phrase to yourself, or count if it´s easier. If you pass the same point before reaching the end of the sentence then you are too close, so back off. It is better if you can leave 3 or 4 seconds, repeating the phrase. In our motorway scenario above, the car would travel over 60 metres in 2 seconds, so you can see that it´s not enough. Remember, the more distance you can allow, the safer you will be, as you are then more likely to be able to stop well within the distance you can see to be clear.

European Tyre Safety Ratings In 2012, the European Union made moves to implement new rules on the labelling of tyres for sale. Much like washing machines or fridges, and even properties for sale, an easy indication of the tyre´s characteristics would be displayed on the label, enabling the buyer to choose their product based on such elements as efficiency, safety rating and noise. The information on the tyre label included roll resistance, graded from “A” which is the best performance, to a “G” rating, the lower end of the scale in tests. Tyres with a higher resistance increase the workload of the engine, in turn leading to higher fuel costs. Adherence to wet surfaces was also a graded factor on the label, once again graded “A” to “G”, with “A” showing the best performance. Across the spectrum of the rating scale, the braking distance between a grade “A” and a grade “G” tyre may be as much as 18 metres, significantly reducing the chance of avoiding a collision in the event of having to brake in wet weather. Of course, driving skills and ability can also allow for more compensation by increasing the distance between you and the vehicle in front, for example. Noise level is also included in the tyre

rating, again, this can be determined by other factors such as the road itself. In many places, so called “quiet tarmac” has been installed to reduce noise, but the tyre noise rating is based on an average. In a bid to further reduce the environmental impact of vehicles on the roads, the sale of poorly performing tyres has been outlawed. The sale of tyres which are in the “F” category for roll resistance, and which are intended for use on passenger cars and vans, have been prohibited. Roll resistance directly influences fuel consumption of the vehicle, and therefore, its pollutant emissions, especially that of greenhouse gases. The lower the resistance, the lower the consumption and, according to the Tyre Manufacturers Commission, “up to 20% of fuel consumption is related to this factor.” According to Jose Luis Rodriguez, president of the Commission, “the prohibition to sell these less efficient tyres in the European market highlights again the informative work and the protection of the consumer interests of the tyre Label”. The sale of “G” rated tyres, in other words the least efficient, was already

outlawed in 2014. The Professional Organization of Tire Specialists (OPEN) insists that tyres are the vehicle’s only contact with the road. They ensure that the adherence and direction that the vehicle travels in is the one desired by the user and also cushions imperfections of the road. At the same time, they insist on the need for adequate maintenance of the tyre, including pressure and depth. According to a study by the University of Edinburgh on vehicle gases, it was stated that 2/3 of the particles emitted by a vehicle are due to tyres, vehicle maintenance and roads. OPEN underlines that “the use of efficient tyres could represent a decrease of 50 litres per 10,000 kilometres in the use of fuel. There is a transitional period for garages which have stock of these Class “F” tyres, in that those manufactured before November 1, 2018, may still be sold for a period of 30 months, i.e. up until May 1, 2021. When buying new tyres, always check the labelling system to ensure you know the quality of the tyres to be installed on your vehicle. Poor quality may increase risk and with tyre safety, compromise if not an ideal agenda.

Coping with road rage Road rage or harassment can have serious and sometimes fatal consequences. In an ideal world, we would all drive in a safe, courteous, and legal manner, maintaining a safe speed and distance, allowing other drivers to proceed if appropriate, staying calm and concentrating on the task of driving. But we don´t live in an ideal world. All too often we see or experience the same, the bad practices of driving too close, overtaking with hostile and insulting gestures, closing gaps to prevent vehicles from joining the traffic flow in front of us, all of which can be sanctioned with fines, the loss of points and, in the worst cases, even prison, so why does it happen? Driving can create extreme situations that end in aggressive decisions. Even a simple delay in a car not driving off when the lights turn green can be enough to prompt an aggressive reaction, at least according to a study by Preventis, as if we didn´t know, with a survey of 1,000 drivers, that revealed that 40% of Spanish drivers are very disturbed by traffic incidents and only 17% say they remain unchanged. The first and most important advice to avoid being a victim of an escalating incident is to not engage in any way. Avoid eye contact, stay calm, don´t react, and, if possible, leave the road as soon as you can to escape from the situation, stopping and calming down if necessary. Having a passenger note the registration number of the vehicle may prove useful, but not to antagonise the situation, still, do not engage in any

way. You can report the behaviour later to the Guardia Civil, and, if you have dashcam footage for example, you can show that to the officers afterwards, you do not need to engage or get involved at the time, you can report it at the earliest convenience. In the event of the situation appearing to continue, even though you have tried to escape, you can call for assistance by dialling 112 immediately, reporting your position, but still avoiding eye contact and not engaging with the other people involved. The Guardia Civil will take action if they feel it necessary, but in any case will at least have a record of the incident should it happen again in the future. Actions such as insulting other drivers, cutting them up, being immersed in a fight, or crashing into another vehicle and fleeing, are traffic safety infractions covered by the Penal Code. Specifically, the act of insulting other drivers is a violation as established in article 18 of the General Circulation Regulations, “the driver of a vehicle is obliged to maintain his own freedom of movements, the necessary field of vision and the permanent attention to driving ... ». The mild insults are punishable in the criminal code with a fine of 10 to 20 days taking into account the personal and economic circumstances of the defendant, and the non-payment may entail the fulfilment of prison. Safety distance is key to avoiding most collisions that occur. In addition, according to recent studies, 21% of

drivers on Spain´s roads do not respect it. The regulations explain that the safety distance is that which allows the vehicle to be completely stopped in case of emergency and sudden braking without colliding with the preceding vehicle, taking into account the speed, braking conditions and instantaneous adherence. The regulations state that every driver must keep a safe distance to stop the vehicle completely in case of emergency without hitting the vehicle in front. For this space to be correct, we must be aware of traffic conditions that can change constantly and that the same references do not work if driving in dry, wet, with high traffic density, so that the minimum distance varies, without forgetting, of course, the degradation of the tires or the braking system. In any case, safety distance results from adding two other distances or factors: Reaction time: The time it takes from when the driver detects an obstacle until making the decision to brake. In optimal conditions it is usually 0.75 to 1 second. Braking distance: The distance the vehicle travels from when the brake pedal is pressed until the vehicle stops. To be as low as possible, we must take the car in good condition, which includes tyres, braking system, cargo, etc. Car maintenance is basic. In normal circumstances, the trick of ‘half a metre’ can be valid: when we drive behind a vehicle, we will multiply

0,5 for each kilometre per hour we go. This simple operation will give a safe reference in metres. For example, if we drive at 100 km / h, it would be 50 meters that we should maintain approximately. Another trick is more complex, as we can multiply the number of tens of our speed by itself. That is to say, if we go to 120 km / h we multiply by 12 to obtain 144 metres of distance. As you can see, a slower operation to do it mentally, taking into account the other factors to pay attention to while driving. However, by far the simplest of all tricks is the ‘two second rule’. It is still not an exact science, and may not allow for precise calculations, but the two second rule is the easiest as you simply need to identify a point of reference for the vehicle in front to pass, and then

count at lest 2 seconds until you reach that same reference point. Look out for any fixed object, a tree, a lamppost, a bus stop, and ten when the vehicle in front passes it, say to yourself, “only a fool breaks the two second rule”, calmly and slowly, and if you pass the same point before you have finished the sentence, you need to back off further. Remember, in wet weather, stopping distances are at least doubled, and in icy conditions they could be up to 10 times more. On the motorways in Spain, it is better to allow for a minimum of 3 seconds, leaving the two second rule for other roads. The simple phrase, “1101, 1102 and 1103”, spoken normally, usually takes 3 seconds to complete. Remember, the more time, the greater the distance, the better.

Imanyo’s golf society have been supporting the Royal British Legion for the past six years, this is the third time we played for the Remembrance Day Cup sponsored by Imanyo golf society and Mick the Grip on behalf of the Royal British Legion, all the money raised on this day stays in Spain to help ex-service men and women who have retired here. Arriving at Altorreal we found everything ready and waiting, the course was in fantastic condition from tee boxes, fairways, greens and bunkers everything was up to the normal high standard. Eighteen players took part with the day starting at Imanyo’s for the traditional English breakfast, the format was singles full handicap Stableford, for those in the UK the weather was sunshine and a pleasant 70 degrees with a light wind in the morning, all but one player was still in shorts except the Chairman (Wimp). Winner of the Remembrance Day Cup from group A was yes guess who again? “Three Clubs” Sean McGuinness with 35 points, runner up was “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly with 34 points, third place on count back between “Twelve Trees” Steve Ayre and ”5 Wood” Chris Houghton was eventually “The Wine Collector” Brian Court with 30 points, winner of group B was “I only need to play 10 holes” Kevin Taylor with 34points, runner up on count back was our youngest player! Colin Pepperday

Elche had to leave mainland Spain to fly to their rivals this week in Mallorca. A number of Elche fans took advantage of the great value flights and went to support the Franjiverdes in the aptly named ‘Visit Mallorca Stadium’ which was just over 50% full for the fixture. Escriba has been constantly changing his starting line up. Unfortunately it seems that he is yet to discover the magic combination to gain points. For the first time this season, and much to the delight of the fans, Edgar Badia started in goal, although Guti was missing due to his red card against Real Madrid. Also missing from the pitch was the manager of Mallorca, Luis Garcia who was serving the first of his two match ban and was following the action in isolation from the stands.

turned and powered forward 20 meters towards the goal before releasing his shot and putting his side ahead. The lead was short lived, in fact it only existed for 4 minutes. Josema fouled Maffeo in front of goal and Salva Sevilla converted the penalty. The draw was even shorter lived, and just 3 minutes later Elche were in the lead once again. Mojica sent an amazing cross into a stretching Boye, whose foot extended just far enough to redirect the ball across the line. The game continued at a fast pace and 6 minutes extra time was added. Elche were seconds from celebrating when in the last action of the game Mallorca won a corner. Badia spied a dangerous unmarked Palmesanos Maffeo and ran towards him, but didn’t make the punch in time. The 173cm Pablo Maffeo jumped high to head the ball into the open goal.

The first half was extremely pedestrian with neither side shining. Badia proved his worth in the 6th minute stopping an almost point blank ball from Angel. Both sides continued with goal opportunities, none of which they converted and the first half finished 0-0

With the draw Elche plummeted from 15th to 18th position and stay in the relegation zone until the next game on the 21st November at home against Real Betis. The coach and match ticket package are ready for booking on www. eurotourguide.com

The action began on the 68th minute with a goal from Elche CF. Russo carelessly lost the ball to Lucas Boye who

Well folks, who’d have thought it? Three managers sacked in the Premier League since we last spoke and none of them go by the name of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Credit to Norwich and Villa - that’s how you sack a manager. Cold, clinical and most importantly - well before my deadline for this column. Tottenham, you couldn’t even get that right, could you? It’s hard to believe that Daniel Levy ever truly thought Nuno was a good idea given that he was 9th choice and he got such a short contract. But it was a shame to see such a good man dismissed and replaced in a matter of hours. Of course, losing 3-0 to a team as utterly rubbish as Manchester United is never a good look - but you have to wonder exactly what has changed enough for Antonio Conte to takeover now rather than in the summer. Personally, I am not buying a single word of the ‘emotion’ around leaving Inter. Maybe I am cynical, but it might have a little more to do with the fact that Harry Kane is clearly going nowhere and Levy is now desperate enough to throw Conte a January war chest full of readies to go and spend on players like AC Milan’s Franck Kessie.

wanted. As for Daniel Farke, the joy of finally winning a Premier League match can’t have lasted long seeing he was given the bullet in the away changing room after Norwich’s 2-1 over Brentford. And Dean Smith? Well, Villa no longer have a fan in charge after he was sacked after the Friday night defeat to Southampton. Just FYI to both clubs, Neil Warnock is back on the market and very keen to add to the 1603 matches he’s done so far.

At least Spurs got their man, this time, which is more can be said for Newcastle United. News broke that Unai Emery was to be the new man in the St James’ Park hot-seat. Apparently, Emery beat Eddie Howe to the job. It was 99.9% done, according to the journos competing with each other to look like they broke the story - the only problem being, the leak to the press meant the deal fell apart.

So, at the time of writing, OGS is still in paid employment. United’s battering in the Manchester Derby was as bad as it was against Liverpool a fortnight ago - had David de Gea not thrown himself back to the era when he was possibly the best in the world, United could have been six down at halftime. De Gea, amongst all his amazing saves, still found time to throw one in, competing with Eric Bailly for the most comical goal of the match.

Emery, a little miffed that it was announced before a contract was signed and his team played that evening, backtracked quicker than any Newcastle midfielder this season - leaving Eddie Howe to take a seat at the Amex (he does realise the side doesn’t actually play on the South Coast, right?) putting a brave face on the fact he wasn’t the man they really

For all United fans still not quite sure where they sit in the football world right now - remember this. Had City and Liverpool chosen to keep going rather than rest their legs, both could have scored eight, nine or even ten against you. But hey, Ronaldo eh? He’ll sell some shirts, that boy.

Abbey Anglers On Tuesday the 2nd of November we fished the 7th Round of the Winter series at El Bosquet. It was a good turn out with 16 anglers taking part and with the weather overcast we all thought we were in for a good day. Sadly for some this was not the case and the weights were slightly disappointing. Winner on the day and now well on the road to recovery with his broken shoulder was Tony McMillan. Sporting a very convincing Father Christmas beard and festive braces he took advantage of a good draw on peg b1 to catch some quality carp on the pole and weighed in 21.700kg. In second place and fishing his

Chelsea ended the weekend still top-of-the-tree despite failing to see off Burnley at Stamford Bridge. Tommy T’s men had nearly 30 shots at goal and managed to score once. Dyche’s lot well they needed little of the ball and very few chances to get their solitary goal. A fine point in the context of the weekend, really. Liverpool’s unbeaten record ended at the hands of the 1000-up Moysiah at the Athletic’s Stadium. Alisson had one of those moments punching a corner into his own net before predictably suggesting he was fouled. Liverpool looked shaky as (again) in defence meaning West Ham are now above them in the Premier League table. Mind you, slip or no slip, Aaron Cresswell should have gone for his foul on Jordan Henderson. Just ask Mason Holgate. Up at Everton, Conte’s league era got underway much in the same way Nuno’s ended - an anonymous Harry Kane, no shots on target and, obviously, no goals. It could have been worse had VAR not insisted Everton’s penalty got overturned. Mind you, Richarlison spends so long on the floor it is hard to know whether he’s ever actually been touched or not. VAR was not Rafa’s friend as Holgate’s yellow was upgraded to red after they realised he’d taken someone out two-

footed above the knees. Still, not a red in East London, apparently. If Leeds had just kept their legs shut for another minute, they might have got another win. Bielsa’s boys led 1-0 against Leicester before conceding immediately after the restart - is it just me, or is that happening a lot more this season? The point keeps them three away from the drop zone, just above managerless Villa. Oh, John Terry for that gig anyone? Crystal Palace’s evolution into being a decent to watch, unlikely to actually go down football team continued with a fine 2-0 win over Wolves, a victory that owed as much to VAR as it did to Wilf Zaha et al. That Conor Gallagher, there will be a bun-fight for him in the summer, that’s for sure. Arsenal are up to 5th after Emile Smith-Rowe managed to score a goal that was not ruled out for offside against Watford. Arteta has now managed 100 games for Arsenal and probably deserves this mini-break from being close to the exit door. And we leave it here, pondering whether the next time we speak Frank Lampard and John Terry might be Premier League managers. Solksjaer will be, naturally - that guy seems to be fireproof.

usual peg 37, was Tony Felstead. Tony fished down the edge to catch carp for 20.36kg on the pole. In third place was the venue master Neil McBernie. Draw on peg 7 he caught at least 10kg of carp in the first hour but sadly for him his peg died and he ended up with 19.075kg. The other section winner and continuing his good run of form was Nick Bastock who had 9.55kg from peg 27. The pairs competition was won by the two Tonys with a very credible 42.060kg. Rods n Reels The following day we fished the Rio Segura at Murcia town centre. Upon arrival the river looked good and conditions were overcast with a very cold wind blowing. For those of you that have not fished this stretch the match bank is continually in the shade in the winter months and although people are walking past in shorts and T shirts on the opposite bank we ended

up wearing every item of clothing we had with us to try and keep warm. Winner on the day and doing the double was Richard ´´Tricky Dicky´´ Wood. Drawn once again on the end peg, he took full advantage to run out a comfortable winner with 13.05kg. Richard fished the method feeder across with bread and corn to take several decent carp. Second was Paul Burton who was drawn on the other end peg, peg 1. Paul also fished the feeder with corn or pellet for 10.125kg. In third place was myself, Ian Brown. I fished my usual 2 pieces of corn and three 10mm bread punch on a long hair rig on the method feeder. I had 12 carp for 10kg. The pairs event was won by Tricky and Paul burton with a convincing 23.150kg. For further details please visit our website abbeyangling.es ian Brown
