Spain to avoid sixth wave

After a good start to the autumn, with the best coronavirus indicators in more than a year, the positive trend in Spain has taken a turn. the national 14-day incidence rate fell to its lowest point in mid-October, with 40 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, and since then, it has been slowly rising. it broke the 50-mark, considered “low risk” on 4th november

at the end of last week it reached 67 cases per 100,000. despite the success of Spain’s Covid-19 vaccination drive – 88.9 percent of the over-12 population is fully vaccinated, according to the health Ministry – there are growing concerns about the delicate situation in many other European countries. Germany,

Austria and the netherlands, which have lower vaccination rates than Spain, are reporting the highest daily number of coronavirus cases seen since the beginning of the pandemic. Fatalities for Covid-19 are also rising in these countries. the question many are asking now is if Spain is on the brink of a sixth wave – but thankfully experts believe

not. “the situation in Europe is a bit scary and the data in Spain are not good, given the indicators are rising. but i would not call what is happening here a wave,” explains Quique bassat, an epidemiologist and researcher at the Catalan institution for research and Advanced Studies (iCrEA) at the iSGlobal institute in barcelona. “the rise is not that explosive, the impact on the health system is not significant, and nor is it likely to be, thanks to the vaccines. it’s more of an uptick that is rising slowly and that we must monitor now to see how it evolves.” Clara Prats, a researcher of Computational biology at Catalonia’s Polytechnical University (UPC), expects that “cases are going to continue to rise for at least two more weeks.” She adds: “it’s more difficult to specify beyond that, although the advantage we have in Spain is that it has been the last country to see a rise and we can compare ourselves to those where it happened earlier and have similar vaccination rates.

One example is denmark. What we are seeing there is that the rise in cases has been significant but sustained since September, when they removed the last restrictions.” Experts say that the improvement in vaccination coverage, with respect to the previous waves, is reason to be confident that the indicators will not worsen too much. “in June, when the fifth wave began, we had two important weak points that we have now overcome,” says Clara Prats. “the younger population was not vaccinated [now nearly 80 percent of teenagers and the 20-29 age group are fully immunised], which allowed the virus to spread at great speed. And many people aged between 60 and 69 who had been vaccinated with AstraZeneca still had not received the second dose, which significantly increased the number of serious cases and hospitalizations among them,” she explains, in reference to the 12-week interval between the first and second shot of the OxfordAstraZeneca vaccine. “this is not going to happen again.”

Covid Campaign

With infection rates on the rise across the Valencian region, a new campaign has been launched to emphasis the safety measures across the winter months. the campaign aims to remind people to wear a mask, maintain social distancing, wash hands and ventilate indoor spaces. Masks remain mandatory in Spain inside public buildings and outdoors if a 1.5 meter distance cannot be maintained such as in shopping areas.

Woman Run Over in Orihuela Costa A woman was injured on thursday afternoon after being run over by a vehicle in Orihuela Costa. At 5 pm, emergency services were alerted that a car had run over the lady on Calle del Mar and a SAMU unit was dispatched to the scene. the medical team treated the 63-yearold pedestrian for multiple trauma and stabilised her before transferring her to torrevieja hospital.

Ribera Salud still key healthcare supplier the Ministry of health is continuing to use the services of ribera Salud, the company that it has just “fired”, in order to continue to provide certain healthcare services. ribera may have left in name, but a large part of the operation of the torrevieja University hospital and its health centres continue to depend on the company. the Ministry of health has had to award around twenty emergency contracts directly, without competition, so that they can guarantee the continuity of health care. ribera Salud will provide services and supplies worth 16 million euros, right through to 31st december, 2022. the

most important service is the clinical analysis and microbiology service offered by torrevieja diagnostics, which is part of the ribera Group, which will cost the Ministry of health 7 million euros. Meanwhile, the torrevieja health department has reinforced its oncology service with the appointment of two new doctors. the addition of the new specialists will improve the diagnosis and care for cancer patients. it allows for faster care and reinforces the lines of work in clinical research and emergency care. the oncology service of the torrevieja hospital, coordinated by dr. Endangered plant found growing in Aguamarina the project underway to eliminate invasive species of plants being carried out in the micro-reserve at Punta de La Glea – in Aguamarina area, next to Cabo roig – has resulted in the discovery of an endangered plant. More than 113 examples of Launaea lanifera ( woolly lechuguino) a plant classified as endangered in the Valencian Community are blossoming on the local cliffs. this micro-reserve of flora and fauna is already of undoubted botanical interest, since it houses the largest peninsular population of a number of species classed as ‘of Community interest’ that are included on the red List and considered ‘vulnerable’, such as the Cat’s head Jar (helianthemum caput-felis).

however, due to its proximity to coastal urban developments, the micro-reserve has been colonised by several pockets of invasive alien species that threatened the habitat of the protected flora. to control its expansion, the department of the Environment has contracted a professional elimination of the unwanted plants. the plant has not been since in this area since 1966 and was rediscovered by José Antonio López Espinosa, an expert botanist. Councillor for the Environment, dámaso Aparicio said: “One hundred and thirteen individual examples of the species have been counted so far, which represents at least 40 percent of the Valencian population, since there is one

other population nucleus in Aspe of 17 specimens and another of similar size in Orihuela in the Sierra de Crevillente.” the municipal biologist supervising the works to eliminate any invasive flora, Gonzalo Escudero explained the considerable importance of the find. he said: “this plant is among the ones to look for as outlined in the ‘Flora del término Municipal de Orihuela Vol ii’ issued by the Orihuela City Council. Finding it demonstrates the importance of the fight against these invasive alien plants. if the Acacia sp. and other exotic species weren’t removed the population of Launaea lanifera would probably have been greatly affected.”

‘Memory Space’ project for Albatera concentration camp the regional government revealed this week that it plans to buy the land around the former Albatera concentration camp in order to transform the space into an interpretation centre in memory of the victims. the regional Minister for Participation, transparency, Cooperation and democratic Quality, rosa Pérez Garijo, and the Mayor of San isidro, Manuel Gil, met recently to discuss new findings after archaeological work was carried out at the site of the Franco concentration camp in Albatera. Councillor Pérez Garijo revealed that “we have started conversations with San isidro city council in relation to the process that allows the acquisition of the land of the Albatera concentration camp to turn it into an interpretation centre.” Pérez Garijo indicated that “the intention of the Generalitat is to acquire the plot” to create a space that “serves for reflection and not to forget one of the saddest and most regrettable episodes of our recent past.” the head of democratic Quality said, “everything we find in the field should serve to broaden the knowledge of this page of our history and help citizens discover the historical, heritage and memorial importance of this space.” the purchase of the land and

creation of an interpretation centre “will have an endowment of 100,000 euros”, revealed the councillor. New findings the group of archaeologists working at the Albatera site recently located the structure and foundation of a 60 metre long barracks in the concentration camp. during the dig, cans of sardines and cans of lentils have also been found, as well as dishes, glass remains, prisoners’ possessions, rubbish and a septic tank. the team of six archaeologists also found ammunition used by the Francoist army, much of it spent, which implies that rifles were fired inside the camp and, therefore, shootings were indeed carried out there. the working group has carried

out two digs on the 14 hectare field, one last year and another between August and October 2021. Machinery has also been used to carry out surveys aimed at finding a mass grave that still has not been located, a task that will continue during next year’s dig. San isidro was part of Albatera until it separated in 1993. between April and november 1939, the Albatera concentration camp was used as a centre for the classification of prisoners. it is estimated that 25,000 people died at the camp – some from disease and hunger and others shot dead by Franco’s troops. thousands of the prisoners were captured as they tried to flee Alicante on the SS Stanbrook, a steamship under the command of a Welsh Captain Archibald dickson.

Living in Spain but still have a UK based financial adviser? By Sam Kelly dipPFS, EFA, bA (hons) Managing Partner Chorus Financial Chorus Financial are receiving an increasing number of enquiries from those of you living in Spain looking to move your pensions and investments to a local financial adviser. A number of those enquiries were directly prompted by the UK adviser themselves, who had informed those clients that they could no longer advise them due to brexit. there is a lot of confusion in this area so i will do my best to share what we know so far. before brexit, the Spanish investment, insurance, and pensions regulators – the dGS and CnMV – allowed UK regulated entities to advise those of us living in Spain through the freedom to provide services regime or by means of an establishment. When britain left the EU, those rights were removed for UK based firms. in preparation for brexit Spain published Article 13 of the royal decree Law (which you can read here: http:// www.cnmv.es/Portal/brexit/FAQ-rdL. aspx?lang=en). Within this, the CnMV have confirmed that, according to Article 13(3) of the rdL, “contracts for the provision of banking, securities, insurance or other financial services, pursuant to which an entity provides services in Spain while domiciled in the United Kingdom”… “will remain valid provisionally, until 30 June 2021, in order to carry out

the necessary activities for an orderly termination or transfer of the contracts concluded prior to 1 January 2021”. in more colloquial terms, this is saying that for any existing business with your UK iFA, their ability to provide you with ongoing service and advice likely ended on 30th June 2021. this extension was granted to allow time to either end your relationship, or for your iFA to transfer you to an entity that can provide advice in Spain. i wanted to further clarify this with the FCA, so sent them some direct questions, and they were kind enough to respond as follows: “Firms intending to do business with persons resident in the EEA need to ensure they do so consistently with local laws and local regulatory expectations. Whether a firm can provide services to Spanish clients (whether ex-pat or otherwise) is a question of Spanish law.” With this response the FCA are stating that it is the country where you are resident that sets its rules, which supports the Spanish regulator’s position in terms of advising those of us who live in Spain. So where does this leave you if you still have a UK iFA? Well, the first place to start is by speaking with them directly.

it may be the case that their firm have set up a subsidiary in the EU and that through that entity they are able to continue to advise you here in Spain. We have also seen several cases where the UK iFA had no idea their permissions to advise Spanish residents had expired. For many of you who will find yourselves looking for a new financial adviser because of these changes there are some steps you can take. the FCA have set incredibly high standards for UK advisers, and this means the advice you will have been receiving over the years will likely have been transparent, appropriate and from a fully qualified adviser. You should expect that standard to continue here in Spain. in simple terms, transparency means your adviser should go out of their way to fully detail all charges you will be exposed to, and of those charges, exactly how much they will receive. i would expect this to be detailed in both % terms and in monetary values. remember, many products and funds in Spain still pay advisers non-disclosed commissions, something that was made illegal in the UK many years ago. this can make your overall fees incredibly high. One big clue is that if a product has a tie-in, for example 5, 8 or even 10 years, then it will be paying an initial commission to that adviser, and we’ve seen those as high as 8% of your

investment value. You should always be offered an option with no tie-in or exit penalties. When it comes to qualifications, there are several bodies an adviser in Spain could be qualified from, and all of these have online registers where you can confirm your advisers’ credentials. With myself, as an example, i am both UK and Spanish qualified. You can also find me on the Spanish register at https://www.efpa.es/busca-tu-asesorfinanciero-certificado. Again, in Spain it is possible for someone to operate as a financial adviser without having any qualifications, so it is important that you confirm the advice you are receiving is from someone who is appropriately qualified. Ask your financial adviser to confirm which register they are on and what formal qualifications they hold so you can verify this independently. GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP At the beginning of the week, investors were stubbornly positive about sterling, ignoring the sleaze controversy in Westminster and the rhetoric about the unloved northern ireland Protocol. that burst of inexplicable enthusiasm put the pound in the lead on Monday, having taken last place on Friday. Over the seven days it all balanced out to leave sterling unchanged on average. it was not easy to find reasons to be cheerful about the UK economy. the housing market remained buoyant, with the halifax index 8.1% higher on the year in October and the riCS reporting that demand exceeds supply. the rest of the UK numbers were less upbeat. the brC’s retail sales monitor put turnover in October only 1.3% higher on the year. thursday’s raft of output data delivered mostly below-forecast results. Gross domestic product grew by a provisional 1.3% in the third quarter, a little less than forecast. industrial and manufacturing production both delivered disappointing results. Manufacturing output grew by 2.8% in the year to September while the broader industrial production was up 2.9%. this morning saw data released from the recruitment and Employment Confederation (rEC)suggesting the UK’s labour squeeze will be continuing in the run-up to Christmas. 221,000 new jobs were posted in the first week of november alone. that’s the fourth highest figure since the start of 2020.

EURO the euro was one of four currencies that were unchanged on the week – or almost so – against sterling and on average. it remained within a one-cent range, showing no individual initiative but simply going with the flow of an FX market that was largely in thrall to the US dollar. the political scene had a half-term quietness to it and the European Central bank did nothing to rattle investors’ cages. in its economic bulletin the ECb acknowledged that “inflation is expected rise further this year” but should decline “in the course of next year”. the same lack of inflationary concern was voiced in an interview by ECb Chief Economist Philip Lane. Eurozone economic data did not add much to the debate. retail sales fell 0.3% in September and were down by 2.5% on the year. Center for European Economic research (ZEW) found economic expectations increasing among institutional investors in Germany. november’s nine-point improvement was the first since May, and put the indicator at 31.7. For the Eurozone as a whole the measure went up by five points to 25.9. On thursday, the EU Commission published its Autumn 2021 Economic Forecast, which showed Eurozone economy recovering from the Covid-19 recession faster than expected. GdP in the bloc is now forecast to grow by 5% this year, up from the 4.8% predicted in July despite supply chain issues and high energy prices.

Christmas Gift Appeal

if you’re a regular reader of the Costa blanca People, you’ve probably already heard about the San José Obrero orphanage. the orphanage caters for around 60 children from the age of 5 to 18 housed in two residence units in Orihuela and Elche. there are also 24 children in a day facility who go home in the evening time as well as a temporary foster care facility. there is also transitional accommodation for older teenagers who do not have family support in order to help them cope with the evolution to adulthood and independence. the orphanage is run by the church and most of the children both live and are educated there. in spite of this, the orphanage does not receive support from the state and is always looking for help from the public. in the spirit of Christmas and ‘children helping children’, Willow international School, with the help of the Costa blanca People and tKO fm, is launching a Christmas Gift Appeal. they are asking students’ families and members of the public in general to add an extra item to their Christmas shopping lists this year. School Principal Amanda riding told the Costa blanca People “We buy so much at Christmas and many of us are lucky that we are able to purchase lovely gifts for our friends and loved ones. i’m asking our families and friends this year that perhaps when they are shopping for their family or heading out to buy their office Secret Santa that they add another special item to their Christmas lists – to buy a toy for a child in need.”

The never ending story “it is the worst case we have had in years,” these are the heartfelt words of Sue Weeding, co-founder of the Easy horse Care rescue Centre, as they dropped everything once again to respond to an emergency call from the authorities. With the Guardia Civil waiting for them, Sue’s husband rod Weeding arrived in Almoradi to be greeted by a horse in an appalling condition. Shockingly it is the 30th animal they have rescued from this town. they were lucky to get the animal back to the rescue Centre as rod’s 25 year old vehicle, used for rescues and to pull horse trailers, is so old it’s about to stop completely. it’s in desperate need of being replaced, and now has fuel problems to add to the long list of failing parts. “it keeps cutting out and we were concerned about getting there but luckily it made it there and back with the horse,” said rod. Safely at the Centre in rojales, equine vet dorothea assessed the newest arrival and agreed that they hadn’t seen a horse this bad in years. Sue added; “he has a heart murmur, neurological problems which could be due to malnutrition and his feet and teeth are in a terrible state. he is absolutely skeletal.” A veterinary report will be issued to the police who will take the case

Man Arrested in Guardamar for School Robbery

National Police in Guardamar have arrested the alleged perpetrator of a robbery with force at a school in the Babel neighbourhood of Alicante. During the crime the three-man gang stole computers, audiovisual equipment, phones and belongings that students kept in their lockers. The man had been hiding in the town of Sax where he had squatted

in a home in order to grow an indoor marijuana crop – this proved to be his undoing and the crop was dismantled by the police. It was also discovered that the arrested man already had an outstanding arrest warrant. All three robbers have now been arrested and the fugitive returned to jail.

The Minister of Education has announced that next year all students enrolled in the 2-3 year stage will have a free place in public and private Valencian nursery schools. This means that some 24,000 2-3 year old students will have a free place in this non-compulsory school age and in order to make the provision the

government has increased the funds by 9 million euros. The minister added that as well as adding more 2-year classrooms in schools, the government will continue to give financial support to families with 0-2 year-old children through the Child Bonus scheme.

Murder Mystery Donations The Stagestruck Theatre Group made the decision to disband in March 2021 when the Covid pandemic forced socity to lock down. A spokesperson for the group said, “Despite this, as soon as we were able to, we started to meet again as a much smaller group to rehearse comedy Murder Mysteries under the

name of the Stagestruck Players.” “We have had to adapt our performances to fit in with the changing restrictions in order to perform in local venues. Despite the difficulties, the events have proved to be extremely popular and we have been able to continue raising funds for our chosen charity, the Torrevieja Alzheimer’s Association.”

feel like sisters. My daughter did not want her to particularly come to the wedding, but of course she had to be invited along with other members of the extended family. The problem is, that my step-daughter has turned up sporting a huge weight-loss and looks incredible. To add insult to injury, her boyfriend is very good looking. When my daughter saw her, she freaked out,

and is in bits because she thinks her stepdaughter ‘did it on purpose’, i.e. lost weight and got a good-looking boyfriend just to spite her. Amazingly, my daughter is also stating that her step-sister has gone to an Agency for her plus one, as ‘he is way of her league’. My husband and I don’t know what to make of it all. My daughter is now wanting to rearrange her wedding until next year, as she says her step sibling has done this purposely. We are thinking about the waste of money if

we cancel everything. If your daughter and her boyfriend are serious about rearranging the wedding until next year, then you may want to go along with her wishes rather than pressure her in to doing something she doesn’t want to do, otherwise she might not let you forget it. Plans to offer vaccines at tourist offices due to high number of infected tourists Health authorities are discussing plans to offer vaccines at tourist offices due to the soaring rate of infections among unvaccinated foreigners. ICUs in the Alicante province – especially Benidorm – are feeling the pressure with a spike in Covid rates and subsequent hospitalisations. Spain has one of the highest vaccination rates in Europe and for this reason, the Ministry of Health has proposed to offer vaccines to tourists. Reports indicate that from today (November 16th) between 11am and 5pm, a mobile vaccination team will be dispatched to Benidorm Tourist Office. This mobile vaccination point will remain open depending on demand. “It is an enclave of the city with a massive influx of people, especially foreigners, and we will maintain it for as long as it takes depending on the response we get”, explained managing director of the Marina Baixa Health Department, Rosa Louis Cereceda. Further south the situation in the Alicante province is more

positive with less hospitalisation and less pressure on ICUs. However, hospital sources throughout the province have revealed that the majority of people who are becoming seriously ill from coronavirus these days are not vaccinated. A report in Información in recent days claimed that there a large number of unvaccinated tourists becoming ill, but also people who reside in the province but

come from countries such as Morocco, Romania and Russia. Reinfections are also beginning to be seen, “but they are older patients or with previous illnesses,” explained Félix Gutiérrez, head of Internal Medicine at the General Hospital

of Elche. Juan Francisco Navarro, head of the Preventive Medicine at Elche General said that this shows the vaccine continues to demonstrate its effectiveness against serious disease. Both Gutiérrez and Navarro say that the entire population will have to be vaccinated against the disease again, although they agree that the elderly and people with serious chronic diseases are the priority groups. As such, the roll out of the third dose of the vaccine continues across the province with those over 70 years of age currently receiving the so called ‘booster’ jab. Despite a good portion of the oldest members of the population having received their third dose, Navarro warns that we all must be attentive to what happens at Christmas, saying, “The incidence at the moment is low and we can still allow ourselves to wait a little longer to think about giving the third dose to other groups, such as health workers or teachers. But if the infections begin to increase, it will be necessary to accelerate.”

Carrying Gas Canisters

As the winter months approach, it´s a good idea to remind ourselves about the rules surrounding carrying gas canisters, as many people in Spain still rely on bottled gas to heat their homes, and many more rely on bottled gas for cooking.

If you need to tow a trailer with your vehicle, you will need to have a tow bar installed. However, in view of the serious implications of getting the installation wrong, it must only be done under certain conditions, in an authorised and qualified workshop and in compliance with the law. In 2011, the law in Spain categorised tow bars. Prior to that date they were simply another accessory which could be added to the vehicle, but the new “anti-tuning” law standardised the European directive of 2007 which elevated the tow bar from an accessory to a “major reform”. Therefore, all tow bars not only have to be of an approved and authorised type for the individual vehicle in question, they can only be fitted in certified workshops where a technical report can be issued, a requirement for the vehicle to pass its ITV inspection. There are two types of tow bars, a fixed ball hook and a removable ball latch. The fixed ball hook, as its name suggests, does not disassemble and any form of manipulation is forbidden. In view of the installation procedures in order to ensure the legality of the tow bar, any action on the tow bar would be considered a manipulation of a major reform, which can only be done legally in a workshop. The removable ball latch is, as the name suggests, detachable and consists of a fixed element and an easily removable part, which may be semi-automatic or by a thread, or by automatic pressure and ball rotation. There are other removable tow bars

which can be retracted into the vehicle, but these form an integral part of the construction. When tow bars are not in use, they can pose a hazard to other road users, as any protrusion from the vehicle can cause damage, such as when reversing into a parking space, especially as the tow bar is not visible, and interferes with the shape and design of the vehicle´s safety features and can cause considerable damage in the event of a rear-end collision. That said, as we have already mentioned, a fixed ball hook cannot be manipulated in any way and therefore cannot be removed (unless done on a permanent basis by a qualified mechanic), and so there is no legal requirement to remove the tow bar when not in use. Similarly, the very design of a removable tow bar does not constitute a legal requirement to remove it either, although you may choose to do for your own safety. There is a legal requirement however that no tow bar, fixed or removable, can interfere with the visibility of rear elements of the vehicle, namely the number plate and lights. Article 9 of the Ley de Seguridad Vial ensures that these items must be visible at all times and not obscured. It is also important to remember that only officially approved tow bars are permitted in Spain and only for the purpose of towing a trailer (including caravans). The use of ropes, A-Frames and vehicle-to-vehicle towing bars or any other unapproved devices are not permitted by law.

Although the gas supply companies will deliver the bottles to your home, many people find it more convenient to pick up their own supply at many of the outlets across the country, exchanging the empty bottles for full ones, but in order to do this, we have to think about the safety and security implications of carrying a potentially lethal canister. Depending on their size and weight, the canisters can be very heavy as they are filled with pressurised gas. At home, care should be taken as to where they are stored, in well ventilated places, away from heat and ignition sources, far away from toxic materials and always in an upright position. In the car, it is equally crucial to take the necessary steps to ensure your safety and the safety of other road users. Spanish law states that you may carry 2 gas bottles in the car, and they must be carried in an upright, vertical position. You must also take necessary measure to ensure that the canisters are secured in the vehicle and cannot move during the journey. The law also states that when you are carrying gas canisters, it is forbidden to park the vehicle in an underground car park. You should also check with your local supply company for their recommendations for storage and carriage, as gas canisters can pose a major threat if not handled correctly, but are perfectly safe if the advice is followed.

Keeping an eye on diabetes A quarter of people are not aware that diabetes can affect your eye health, a new survey reveals. Specsavers Ópticas surveyed 40 customers in the lead up to World Diabetes Day, as it looks to raise awareness of the eye condition, diabetic retinopathy. People with diabetes are at risk of developing diabetic retinopathy, a complication of diabetes that damages the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye called the retina. This occurs because the retina at the back of the eye is supplied with blood by a delicate network of blood vessels. Diabetes can cause the blood vessels to become blocked or leak, meaning the retina cannot work properly because it is not receiving a good blood supply. Left

untreated, it can lead to complications resulting in sight loss. To prevent this from happening, Specsavers Ópticas is highlighting the importance of regular eye tests and the warning signs in our eyes which could indicate a risk.

According to the WHO , the number of people with diabetes rose from 108 million in 1980 to 422 million in 2014. If left untreated, diabetes can damage the heart, kidneys, feet and eyes – potentially leading to diabetic retinopathy. lo Crispin Golf Society at Alicante Golf Following a number of cancellations and a car breakdown on the A7, just 19 members and 2 guests teed off on 10th. November in an individual stableford competition. The weather was cool and the skies overcast for the most part. As more often than not the course was generally in good condition. As usual also the greens were mostly quite fast and true. The scoring, although not great, represented a general improvement compared with recent games. Busters Golf Society November 2021 report The weather report threatened rain or as my mobile app said “ a 40% of precipitation “ however this didn’t happen, the weather was very pleasant for November 5th. We played our monthly game at La Serena which was in excellent condition, although the play was very slow as we were held up on almost every hole. As we are approaching the end of the year with only one more game to go our Player of the Year leader board, has only 5 points difference between the lead and second place so it could be a close finish, onto our results our nearest the pins were taken by John Rush on the third, Barry Grinsell took the ninth with Peter List winning the fifteenth and last but not least was Martin Collins winning the seventeenth each received a bottle of wine that had been donated by Ian the boss of Little Leias, we had a tie for first place but losing to a better back

Joe Biden congratulates irish rugby team after All Blacks win The President of the United States Joe Biden took the time on Saturday to personally congratulate the Irish rugby team following their spectacular victory over the All Blacks. Irish Rugby tweeted an image showing a video call with President Biden, who spoke with the players after the win in the Aviva Stadium. In the social media post, Irish Rugby said it was “incredible” to have @POTUS address the team following the victory. According to a report by The Irish Examiner, Biden also called Taoiseach Micheál Martin to offer his congratulations following the win and discussed his own experiences playing American Football while in college. Ahead of Saturday’s game, President Biden, who often talks about his Irish roots, also wrote a letter to the team, offering his “best wishes” as they prepared to face the New Zealand All Blacks. Within the letter, the US president described the 2016 victory over the All Blacks as a “historic moment in

Irish rugby” and said that he would be cheering the Irish team on once again. “I was thrilled to congratulate the entire team, especially my cousin Rob Kearney, back in 2016 when you first beat the All Blacks in Chicago- a historic moment in Irish rugby,” he wrote. “Since then, you’ve beaten the All Blacks in 2018, and I know that you can do it again this year.” “Fans in Aviva Stadium, throughout Ireland, and around the world will be rooting for another victory,” he said. I’ll moan about it, I won’t watch and you can bet your last euro on the fact that as soon as Qatar 2022 kicks off I’ll be all about international football again. I’m not expecting the Scottish or Welsh folk amongst my 17 readers to understand - I am sure you are very excited about the prospect of yet another international match in the near future, being a playoff to qualify for an already bloated World Cup. Anyway, it still exists so I still have to comment - England smashed Albania 5-0 with Harry Kane helping himself to a hat-trick that got Spurs fans all excited that “class is permanent” and all that. Please do adopt your very best Roy Keane accent and repeat five times, “lads, it’s Albania”. Try having a shot on target in the Premier League and then we can talk. Speaking of Keano, he’s really not much of a Harry Maguire fan, is he? Southgate calls it “staying relevant’, Gabby Agbonlahor calls it being a “bully” and I think I call it knowing an inconsistent central defender when one is staring you in the face. England will qualify for Qatar by getting a point in San Marino, and taking them very seriously according to Gareth. So seriously, that half the squad have decided they don’t need to be there. Still, maybe we will see Conor Gallagher become the latest cap. Nothing like making your debut knowing that there’s been 23 players pull out ahead of you. At least we had lots of managerial stuff to keep us going in the last seven days. Last week, Norwich City earned my respect by sacking Daniel Farke in advance of my deadline. Frustratingly, they failed to announce Dean Smith in time for this one. He’d also like Mo Salah to cut inside and stick it top corner for him next season - Xavi clearly does follow the Peppy G blueprint of coaching then. Alisson is still bleating on about that goal he threw in against West Ham. Move on, Ali - and be stronger next time. Tottenham want Fiorentina’s Dusan Vlahovic, suggesting they are not as convinced that a treble against Albania means that Kane is the best striker in the world once more. In third place was Steve Higgins, drawn on the old back channel on peg Abbey Anglers On Tuesday the 9th of November we visited the Rio Segura in Murcia town centre to fish the eighth round of the winter series. Only anglers took part but the weather was quite mild and appeared to be set fair. Richard King drew the favoured peg one next to the first bridge and made no mistakes to run out the overall winner. Richard fished corn or Wafter on the method feeder to take a number of small carp for 11.200kg. In second place was yours truly Ian Brown who used similar tactics from peg 4 to catch 14 small carp for a total

of 10.175kg. In third place an continuing his rich vein of form at the venue was Richard Wood. Richard again fished the feeder to weigh in 7.075kg. He did though learn a valuable lesson and that is to check that your net is empty before letting the weighing party proceed with the next weigh in. He had left a small carp in his net that he found after we had left. On this occasion it made no difference to the outcome but it could have been critical. The pairs event was won by Richard King and Dave Sutcliffe with 16.100kg.

Rods n Reels The following day we fished at the El Bosquet complex. Once again the weather was quite pleasant for this time of year with temperatures just topping 20 degrees but only 11 anglers turned out. Winner on the day after just about finding his way to the complex was John Waples. He fished a great match on peg 6 to weigh in 25.40kg. John caught steadily all day and he fared much better that when trying to catch his return flight from the uk recently. John queued up for the Dublin flight instead of the Alicante one and managed to miss it.

British redsidents mark Remembrance Day

Hate Crime at Wedding A man was arrested after he gatecrashed an Islamic wedding and threatened guests. The 34-year old from Elche entered the mosque, shouted obscenities, made rude gestures and shoved several women and children. The police were called by a wedding

guest who remained on the phone and followed him outside, where the irate man punched him and continued the verbal abuse. Officers found the man hiding under a car, he threatened officers and was still shouting racist comments all the way to the police station!

Spain extends Retirement Age

The Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, accompanied by the Councillor for International Relations, Gitte Lund, and the Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Tourism, Rosario Martínez, participated in an important act of tribute to all victims of wars and terrorism.

Hundreds of British residents gathered in Torrevieja square to pay homage alongside local dignitaries. A commemorative mass was held in the Inmaculada church followed by an emotional wreath laying ceremony in memory of the fallen. Eduardo Dolón highlighted the

enormous importance of this event for the British community living in Torrevieja, remarking on the “active participation of this community in all the cultural and social events organized by the Torrevieja City Council.”

The Spanish Government is promising to make a pension reform that will save 30 million euros. The changes are being made with babyboomers in mind, those born between the late 1950s and mid-1970s. The new rules to access retirement come into force in 2022 and will mean those affected will work longer and receive less money in order to prop up a system that is no longer sustainable. The changes will delay retirement age as by 2021 retirees will have to be 67 years old.
