260 tons of debris removed in Torrevieja

urban Cleanliness councillor of torrevieja town hall, Carmen Gómez, reported the removal of 260 tons of rubble and garbage from wasteground in and around torrevieja auditorium last week. the illegal dumping of building and household waste in the area had become an issue that the town hall was keen to deal with and Councillor Gómez said that they were counting on locals to help tackle the issue. Gómez requested collaboration by citizens in order that instances of fly tipping can be reported to local police right away

in order that perpetrators be arrested and fined. She also wanted to remind residents that individuals can freely deposit small amounts of rubble in the eCoParQue, located opposite habaneras shopping centre in torrevieja. Carmen Gómez revealed that a map of illegal dumps is being drawn up in order that police and the town hall can plan surveillance in order to catch repeat offenders. however, she emphasised that the participation of citizens in reporting perpetrators is key to stamping out this illegal practice.

Government to decide about schools

the central Government and the autonomous communities are set to meet today to discuss the pandemic and any possible extra measures before schools return after the Christmas break. this will be the only item on the agenda of the education Sector Conference, the interterritorial Council of the national health System and the General Conference on university Policy set to begin at 9am this morning (tuesday). the meeting, which takes place at the Palacio de la Moncloa is expected to be attended by the Ministers of health, education and universities, and the Councilors of education of the various autonomous communities. a representative of the Ministry of territorial Policy will also attend. according to the latest data provided by the Ministry of education, corresponding to december 23, only 1.58% of the classrooms in Spain were confined before the holiday break, when the omicron variant had just begun to spread. a third of children between 5 and 12 years old are already vaccinated and the government hopes for widespread

Chairman Philip Wilson and show director met with the Chairman of the San Fulgencio Men’s Shed project Barry Wallis and handed him 500 euro to go towards the

project. the San Fulgencio alzheimers association and age Concern will also receive donations in the very near future. rehearsals for the summer production Guys & dolls will begin end of january and an open day is planned at Lakeview Bar and restaurant in Quesada starting at 11:30am on Sunday 9th of january.

Spain extends ban on non vaccinated travellers the Spanish government has decided to extend the entry ban against the majority of ‘third countries’ in the face of the current Covid 19 situation and the spread of the omicron variant. the extension, which is now in place until january 30th 2022, means that the majority of unvaccinated tourists from outside the eu cannot currently visit Spain. Spain’s official State Gazette confirmed the newest extension to the temporary restriction order for non-essential trips and unvaccinated travellers from outside the bloc, first brought about in july 2021. the rules apply to unvaccinated people from most non eu states. travellers who can prove valid vaccination status can enter Spain for tourism. British tourists were disappointed in late november when Spain announced that a negative PCr or antigen test would no longer be accepted from Britons looking to holiday in Spain. From december 1st, only those who could show proof of vaccination have been allowed in. the restriction has now been extended until the end of this month with many experts saying it will be extended further given the current epidemiological situation.

despite the fact that Spain continues to maintain tight restrictions for all those arriving from non-eu/Schengen area countries to prevent the spread of the omicron variant, several third countries are not affected by the temporary entry restrictions as they have been reporting low infection rates. Spain’s list of epidemiologically safe third countries currently

includes argentina, australia, Bahrein, Canada, Chile, Colombia, indonesia, Kuwait, new Zealand, Peru, Qatar, rwanda, Saudi arabia, South Korea, united arab emirates, uruguay, China (including hong Kong, and Macao). entry from the above countries is allowed but travellers must still fill in a health

Control Form. “Whichever country you are arriving from, all passengers arriving in Spain by air or sea (ferry), including passengers making flight transfers and children under 12, must fill in a health control form before they start their journey,” the statement of Spain’s official tourism website, travel Safe, reads. Meanwhile, there was some confusion over Christmas as to whether France would allow uK citizens transit through on their way to Spain or other countries of residence in the eu. in late december, the operators of the eurotunnel issued a warning to British citizens who live in the eu that they cannot travel through France by car from the uK due to new coronavirus restrictions imposed by the French government. the statement read: “Following a French Government decision, on 28/12/2021, unless they hold French residency, British citizens are now considered 3rd country citizens and can no longer transit France by road to reach their country of residence in the eu.” however, a ‘period of tolerance’ was announced by the French government, despite some British travellers insisting they had been turned back by French authorities.

immunization of children by the end of january. Because of the recent vaccination campaign among Spanish children, those under 11 years of age are no longer the age bracket with the highest incidence – this is now the 20 to 39 year old agegroup. Most communities are in favour of resuming classes in person after the Christmas holidays although some, such as Madrid, have been more cautious and are considering ‘semi-presence’ based on the epidemiological data available as the return date, the 10th january, approaches.

started in late july 2021 and in early September we were officially granted the instrumental version of the song and all the necessary permissions to use it. the recording could finally begin.” the new recording took place at dougie Munro’s recording Studio and the Sound Lab Studio in orihuela Costa. the final mix was produced by dougie Munro. the single will officially premiere on Sunshine FM, on thursday, january 6 at 11am, so please tune in. We asked Filip why the group decided to embark on the project in the first place. he said, “Blue Lagoon Community Food Bank decided to work

on a project that would also help others, especially during Christmas and new year season. We decided to support the anaPee Society in torrevieja and raise funds in aid of their extremely hard work too. of course, we could have organised a usual fundraiser but we wanted something bigger and we wanted something everyone could physically own as a souvenir and be simply proud of it.” explaining how funds will be raised, Filip said, “We managed to secure 1000 copies of the single thanks to our amazing sponsor: Lisa McLoughlin from Pitch & Pint Bar in Las Filipinas. the single will be sold locally

and the cost of one copy is only 5 euros. you’ll find your copy at: Pitch & Pint Bar (Las Filipinas), Bar establo (eagle’s nest), the Stray Sod (La Fuente) Bar arianaz (La Florida) and the royal oak (Campoamor). of course, if any bar, pub, cafe or restaurant in our area wants to join the project, we´ll welcome everyone with open arms. Citizens arrest in Lidl for prawn thief a group of people were filmed physically detaining a man who is alleged to have stolen a €9 box of prawns from a Lidl supermarket in alicante. a video of the incident has gone viral, showing a group of people holding a man to the ground after he allegedly left an alicante supermarket without paying for a box of prawns. in the video, which spread like wildfire, one of the people held on the ground can be heard complaining of pain as about three people crush him with their knees against the tarmac while a crowd gathers to watch.

the internet is divided into those who defend the supermarket and the citizens who detained the thief, and others who criticize the ‘arrest’ and those who are siding with a large supermarket chain, especially given the time of year. one twitter user said, “if they wanted to be heroes, it was enough for one of all those to go to the Lidl and pay for the box of prawns and also buy him a pot of mayonnaise. it’s that simple.” another twitter user pointed out that stealing a box of prawns without violence is not as serious a crime as restraining a

person with force. While some expressed pity for the alleged thief, some had no sympathy saying, “i don’t feel sorry for him. he has not stolen bread, rice or milk. he has stolen prawns. Many Spaniards make sacrifices to pay for those prawns or that lamb at Christmas.”

Brit driving licence extension the British embassy in Madrid has announced that Spanish authorities have for the third time extended the period of validity of uK driving licences in Spain, with negotiations over a licence exchange “to conclude as soon as possible” but are “not there yet”. “We are pleased to let you know that the Spanish Government has today confirmed the extension of the grace period during which you can drive in Spain using a valid uK licence until the end of February 2022,” the uK embassy in Madrid wrote in a Facebook post. this is the third extension since Brexit meant their uKissued documents became unrecognised by the common eu framework, the first extension being announced in june 2021 and the second one in october. the two-month grace period gives uK licence holders who live in Spain and registered their intent to exchange their licence more time to do so. For those who didn’t register their intent, it offers more time to sit their Spanish driving test and obtain a Spanish licence. “We recognise that the extension is relatively short, and therefore it is important that – if it is imperative for

News

CostaBlancaPeople 4th - 10th January 2022

you to drive – you consider all your options, which may include looking into taking a driving test now,” the embassy headed by uK ambassador to Spain hugh elliott stressed.

on the subject of a potential deal between Spain and the uK, the embassy wrote: “as you know, the uK Government is committed to reaching a long-term agreement with Spain so that residents can exchange their uK driving licences without taking a test. “negotiations are continuing and we stand ready to conclude that agreement as soon as possible. But unfortunately we are not there yet.” in an earlier Facebook video, uK ambassador hugh elliott admitted that “many of you have also rightly pointed

out that Spaniards resident in the uK are able to exchange their Spanish licence for a uK one without taking a practical test”. after a long wait for answers, uK licence holders in Spain are now hoping that a reciprocal agreement can finally be reached to solve the Brexitinduced obstacle. it is unclear yet if any future agreement would be beneficial to only British residents who are protected under the Withdrawal agreement or other uK licence holders who have moved or will move to Spain to become residents after Brexit came into force on 1st january 2021. unless Spain has a bilateral agreement with a third country for the recognition and exchange of licences, most non-eu driving licence holders have six months from their arrival in Spain to use their foreign licences. after that, they have to sit a theory and practical examination and get a Spanish licence from scratch. this doesn’t apply to British tourists with uK licences visiting Spain who are for example renting a car during their holidays. the issues only affect uK licence holders who are residents in Spain.

Mortgage signings increase the number of mortgages signed in Spain went up by 27.9 percent in october compared with the same month last year. a total of 36,249 deals were signed - the highest figure for the month of october since 2010. the average value of these home loans was 138,111 euros, an increase of 1.9 percent on last year’s figures, and the total capital loaned to home buyers was 5,006.4€ million, which equates to a 30.3 percent year-on-year increase. 67.2 percent of the mortgages signed in october were fixed interest rate loans, with the remaining 32.8 percent being variable interest rate

loans. the highest number of new home loans per region in october was seen in the ever-popular andalusia with 7,374 new mortgages, followed by Catalonia with 5,908 and then the Community of Madrid with 5,891. the regions which lent the most in capital in october this year were also the same three. Madrid and the soughtafter commuter towns surrounding the capital was unsurprisingly the region where most money was lent to homebuyers (1,239.5 million euros), followed by Catalonia (973.3 million) and andalusia (859.7 million).

Adopt a Grandparent success More than 9,000 letters have been sent by kind-hearted member of the public to elderly residents in care homes, as part of an ‘adopt a Grandparent’ scheme. the campaign has around 600 care homes signed up and is supported by at least 40 companies. anyone can join in from any part of the world via the una Carta Para un abuelo - ‘a Letter for a Grandparent’ - website, these are printed off for elderly residents to read, or are read to them if they are no longer able to do so. Within the first week of the festive letter-writing campaign, upwards of 9,000 had been penned and sent, many from children, given that around 500 schools nationwide have been participating as a class activity. it concluded on Christmas eve, after three weeks, and although the final ‘letter count’ has not been revealed as yet, last year saw in excess of 150,000 festive communications sent to senior citizens, and over a million hits on the website unacartaparaunabuelo.org. Spokeswoman for the startup firm, rebeca López, says the ‘adopt a Grandparent’ scheme is about creating contact

between different generations and supporting older people who are either lonely or at risk of being so. “our aim is for them to feel listened to, feel they have company and that they’re loved, and at the same time, our volunteers learn new values and life experiences,” Sra López explains. despite Spain’s long tradition of close family ties – geographically as well as emotionally and practically – meaning many elderly people in homes will have regular visits from loved ones, a huge number will never see anyone they know over Christmas except for fellow nursing centre residents. in some cases, this is because they do not have any family left at all, particularly if they never married or are widowed, never had children, and were an only child so have no nieces or nephews. Letters from the public can be a huge comfort to them at a time

of year when those spending the season alone feel more lonely than ever. as well as the adopta un abuelo website, the company has recently launched a mobile phone app which allows younger generations to connect with their ‘adopted grandparents’ from anywhere in the world, making calls and video calls with the help of volunteers or staff at the homes, book virtual or in-person visits, or schedule events and dates.

Airlines reduce flights to Spain tourism is once again at risk as ryanair plans to scrap a third of its january flights, and it’s not the only airline cancelling flights in reaction to the latest Covid variant, omicron. ryanair has announced it is cancelling a third of its flights in january. this comes after a wave of cancellations over Christmas and Boxing day which caused travel chaos for holidaymakers hoping for winter sun. Britons are banned from France and Germany, while Morocco has suspended all flights from the eu. ryanair has seen a huge decline in bookings over the holidays and has reacted by cutting its planned schedule in january by a third. a spokesman for ryanair said: “the impact of these recent government travel restrictions, in particular the ban on uK arrivals into France and Germany, and the suspension of all eu flights to/from Morocco has lowered ryanair’s expected december traffic from 10 to 11 million, to a lower range of between nine to 9.5 million.” in responding to these restrictions, ryanair has now cut its january capacity

by 33 percent, reducing its expected january traffic from approximately 10 million to six to seven million. For Spain holidays, Palma in Mallorca will see the biggest number of cancellations with 10 routes scrapped. three other routes from Menorca and two from ibiza have also been

cancelled. twenty flights will be cancelled across three Canary island airports and six each at Malaga and Seville. Luckily at the moment, there are no changes to scheduled flights to alcante-elche airport. ryanair has not yet announced what will happen after january, saying it will look at travel restrictions nearer the time to make a decision. the airline’s spokesperson said: “in light of the current uncertainty about the omicron variant and europe travel restrictions, no schedule cutbacks have yet been decided

for February or March 2022. “these schedules will be revisited in january as more scientific information becomes available on the omicron variant, its impact on hospitalisations, european population and/or travel restrictions in February or March.” British airways has also cancelled more than 2,000 flights until March 2022. and WiZZ air’s service between Gibraltar and London has been suspended. a company spokesperson said: “the uncertain outlook for the travel industry has forced us to make a number of adjustments to our programming. “We are constantly reviewing our schedule and would like to re-enter the Gibraltar market when it makes the most commercial sense for us, as soon as possible.” Britons wishing to holiday in Spain must show proof of being fully vaccinated. the rule applies to all travellers over 12 years old. on 24th december, Spain has reintroduced mandatory maskwearing in outdoors and open spaces.

New traffic laws come into force in March in recent editions of the n332 column in the Costa Blanca People, we have focused on some of the changes to the traffic laws that are expected to come into force soon. We can now confirm that Law 18/2021, of december 20, which modifies the revised text of the Law on traffic, Circulation of Motor Vehicles and road Safety in terms of driving licences and points was published in the Boe on 21 december 2021. therefore, it will enter into force within a period of 3 months, which means the new changes to the law we have discussed will be in force from 21 March 2022. a reminder of what the new law entails... the new regulations and sanctions, according to the General directorate of traffic, seek to reduce the accident rate on the road and strengthen road safety. Mobile phone: a change to the law makes simply holding a mobile phone an offence, even if you are not using it or using, penalised with the increased loss of six points instead of three. the financial penalty remains at 200 euro.

Safety systems: travelling without wearing a seat belt, helmet or child restraint system will entail a four-point penalty. radar detector: its mere presence inside the vehicle will be subject to a fine and will result in the loss of three points. Throwing objects on the road: throwing any object that could cause fires or accidents will result in the loss of six points. overtaking on conventional roads: the 20 kilometre per hour margin that allowed cars and motorcycles to exceed the speed limit of the road to overtake other vehicles disappears. Overtaking cyclists: carrying out this manoeuvre putting them in danger, hindering them or without leaving the minimum distance of 1.5 metres will lead to the loss of 6 points, increased from 4. Personal mobility vehicles: users of these means of transport will have to be equipped with a helmet and will not be able to drive on the pavement or on other pedestrian areas. Minors who use them, in addition, will have to respect the zero-alcohol rate.

Breathalyser for passenger transport: as of july 6, 2022, all vehicles for passenger transport must be equipped with an antistart breathalyser. Recovery of points: from now on, the time that must pass without committing infractions to recover the initial balance of 12 points will be two years (if all the points have not been lost). to this it must be added that two points can be added with the safe driving courses certified by the dGt. Pollution: a new serious offence is introduced, with a 200-euro fine, for not respecting the movement restrictions derived from the application of the protocols in the event of pollution episodes and low emission areas. For the first time Spanish legislation refers to the automated vehicle, in several articles of the traffic Law. the whole of the bill, which modifies the traffic Law of 2015, aims to increase the penalties for those behaviours that generate greater risk for driving, such as the use of a mobile phone behind the wheel or the misuse of vehicles. elements of security and protection of the vehicle.

Hospital cleaners Robbers arrested plan January strike the cleaning service staff at the Vega Baja hospital will go on strike on 10th january in protest over working conditions and contract issues. the decision was announced by the CCoo union and the independent union that make up the cleaning company committee at the hospital. these issues are on-going and according to the CCoo complaint “the previous contracting companies have been reducing their staff numbers, which went from 85 people in 2012 to 64 today”. this has caused workers to protest in recent years because of the reduction in staff “has an impact on workers resulting in greater workloads and complaints from the hospital regarding poor services that ultimately affects all departments and the patients”. until now, complaints have been filed with the Labour inspectorate and protests have been organised but the contracting companies have been delaying and there is still no solution. Last august a new contractor was hired, however according to the union rather than things improving, they have gotten

a joint operation carried out by the Civil Guard and the national Police has resulted in the arrest of 14 people and the dismantling of a criminal organisation which had been robbing houses and farms across the Vega Baja. the investigations began in august as a result of a considerable increase in complaints of robberies from homes in the provinces of alicante, Murcia and albacete. a total of eight searches were

worse. the union claims that the new contractor got off to a bad start by firing one of the managers, then refused to cover medical leave or leave with the same hours which resulted in a loss of benefits for the workers. they then began to restructure the service provision. Currently, there are plans to fire about 12 more workers. the current employer has also reneged on a previous agreement which has resulted in eight lawsuits which will go to trial in april. however, the union claims that the contractor has stated that if the workers win it will automatically fire them, which will mean around 20 people losing their jobs. “We cannot accept it and we

cannot understand how the cleaning of a hospital can be reduced to half the number of people it required 10 years ago, when its surface has also increased, there are now more square meters than in 2012,” the unions claim. the unions believe that in order to clean effectively, particularly with the Covid pandemic 85 dedicated to cleaners are required. there are currently 64 and the contractor intends to reduce this to 44. the workers are calling for all leave to be covered with the same hours, that current agreements are respected, that the manager be reinstated and no one else be fired. if these conditions are not met then the strike will go ahead.

carried out: three in Callosa de Segura, two in Granja de rocamora, one in Benferri, one in daya nueva and another in orihuela, where officers seized mobile phones, jewellery, electronic and technology devices, tools and household items. it is believed the gang is responsible for 59 house robberies and 27 farms. thirty-five stolen vehicles have been recovered in various towns across the three provinces

which were used by the criminal group to carry out their crimes. also recovered were items used by the gang such as ski masks, gloves, GPS locating devices, rotating light signals, counterfeit license plates and a hunting shotgun, among others. the investigations are still open since both the Civil Guard and the national Police are continuing to identify the recovered items and try to locate the owners.

Military teams to support vaccination push the department of Public health has incorporated 20 mobile military vaccination teams, offered by the Ministry of defence, in order to speed up and reinforce the immunisation programme across the Valencian region. the soldiers will work eight health departments, and specifically focus on the administration of booster jabs. the Minister of health, ana Barceló, has explained that “these 20 military teams are going to be added to the 149 from the Ministry of health, which are already administering booster doses at permanent vaccination points. therefore,

we are going to be able to considerably speed up the vaccination process”. the current focus is on giving the booster doses to people over 60 years of age, people who have previously received the janssen vaccine and those members of the public who have been immunised with the astraZeneca. once these priority groups are completed, the vaccination campaign will continue with people over 50 years of age, and then progress to those over 40 years of age. the health Minister reiterated the importance of going to

the vaccination point if you receive an SMS text message appointment or phone call. “it is very important to receive the booster dose and continue to protect the population. as we know, the vaccine is our main ally against the coronavirus, in addition to protective measures. if you are summoned, please, go,” the Minister urged. the eight health departments to be strengthened by military support include orihuela and torrevieja, specifically the vaccination points at orihuela (escorratel senior center), Callosa (town hall) and torrevieja hospital.

Spain bans smoking on beaches Spain has passed a groundbreaking new law to ban smoking on its beaches. the law passed after a petition, signed by more than 280,000 people, was delivered to the Government. Smokers who light up despite the law will be fined up to 2,000 euros. the law is part of attempts to combat pollution. the law was approved in the Spanish senate on 23rd december and gives local municipalities the power to ban smoking on beaches. it is aiming to reduce pollution from cigarette butts and was introduced by Spain’s Green Party. Cigarette butts are one of the world’s most damaging pollutants as they contain a non-biodegradable plastic polymer. other measures included in the new law ban single-use plastics and focus on removing asbestos from buildings and encouraging the return of bottles to shops. Spanish tourist spots including Barcelona and the Canary islands have already banned smoking on beaches. Sardinia in italy and some areas in southern France already have bans on beach smoking but Spain’s law would be the first

nationwide ban. Pedro Sanchez, Spain’s Prime Minister, has set targets for Spain to become carbon neutral by 2050. as part of reaching that goal, the country has introduced many environmental measures to Government policy. the Government won a majority on the smoking ban with 182 votes in favour, 70 against and 88 abstentions. the ultranationalist Spanish political party Vox voted against the ban while the conservative People’s Party abstained. Fernandez Megina, a member of the no Fumadores (no Smoking) group said the petition showed the Government could not afford to wait any longer. Cigarette butts are extremely harmful to the environment as well as being an eyesore on otherwise stunning beaches. Studies have shown that compounds, including nicotine, from the butts can seep into aquatic ecosystems. this is extremely toxic to fish, microorganisms and other aquatic creatures. the plastic part of cigarette butts can take up to 10 years to degrade. however, the chemicals released from the butts can

remain in the environment for many more years. it is not unusual for scientists to find cigarette butts inside dead sea birds, sea turtles, fish and dolphins. this month, a beer company foundation, estrella de Levante Foundation, launched a campaign to clean Spain’s Mar Menor. the saltwater lagoon has become extremely polluted from farming waste and the Government has attracted strong criticism from environmentalists. the cleanup campaign has reportedly removed more than 10 tonnes of debris from the lagoon, including the remains of a beach bar.

Chorus open new Costa Blanca South Office! By Sam Kelly dipPFS, eFa, Ba (hons) Managing Partner Chorus Financial We are delighted to announce the opening of our new office in Benijofar, South Costa Blanca. Chorus Financial have clients across the whole of Spain, but with many hundreds of them based in the popular area between alicante and Murcia, and with more people moving to Chorus each day, this new office is both much needed, and indeed long overdue!

told, in writing, exactly how much your financial adviser is earning, in pounds, shillings and pence, and have all costs and charges detailed in simple, transparent terms. this means that advice and product fees are separated, and your adviser is 100% focussed on providing you with the best possible solution for your circumstances.

We had originally planned to open an office in this area in 2020, but just as we were about to put pen to paper on the lease, Coronavirus hit and the rest, as they say, is history! although in modern life, with emails, video calls, home printers and scanners, financial services can easily be provided remotely, we appreciate that having a local office is both beneficial and reassuring for clients making such significant life decisions.

the alternative to this is Spain is some opaque, complex, often multilayered charging structure, generally with a long tie-in and exit penalties, where you really have no idea who is getting their hands on your hardearned pensions and savings, and for what! often advice is focussed more on how much the adviser is being paid in hidden commissions, rather than what is best for you. Sadly, most firms still operate in this way in Spain, but at least now those in Costa Blanca South can sit down with a Chorus Financial adviser, and get truly client focussed, ethical advice without any of the usual nonsense that has given financial advisers such a bad name in Spain.

over the last half a decade Chorus Financial have grown to become by far the most trusted financial services company in the region, indeed arguably across the whole of Spain. We were the first firm to openly insist on ‘fee-based’ advice and full transparency and remain one of the only firms with this policy in Spain. What this means in a nutshell is that as a Chorus client you will be

well-known financial adviser here in Spain, who started his career in the uK working as a financial adviser for Lloyds and has been based in South Costa Blanca for the last 6 years. Chris has been very active in the local community for many years, running regular seminars, and talking finance on radio and in local newspapers. Mael joins us as a Client relationship Manager, having spent the last few years working for a popular law firm in Spain specialising in expat legal advice. Mael brings an incredible amount of experience into the role

andhuge value in terms of overall client care. Chorus Financial now have the entire Costa Blanca covered from our javea and Benijofar offices, along with our remote advice options which are available across the whole of Spain. For those of you considering financial advice in 2022 who want to work with an ethical and client focussed company, contact Chorus Financial by email on info@chorusfinancial.es, by phone on +34 965 641 163 or visit www.chorusfinancial.es for more information.

With the opening of the new office, we are also very happy to welcome Chris Shaw and MaelCampi to the Chorus team for 2022. Chris is a popular and

Investment contracts are intended as medium to long term investments, and all investments have some level of risk. Figures in our articles are examples of what can be achieved and cannot be guaranteed; the value of your investments can go down as well as up. Fees and charges can vary and will be fully explained to you before any advice can take place. Four officers injured in New Year arrest Four police officers were injured during the arrest of an alleged thief in redován. the suspect is accused of carrying out several robberies in Callosa de Segura. the arrest took place on new year’s eve when redován police requested support from their Callosa colleagues to apprehend the suspect who had barricaded himself inside a local establishment. Callosa police immediately went to the aid of their redován

counterparts and on arrival, the alleged perpetrator began go attack officers with a fire extinguisher, both with the contents and the canister itself. despite the difficulty of the intervention, the officers managed to arrest the man, as well as another alleged perpetrator of the robbery who was inside the establishment. the arrest resulted in injuries to four of the six officers who intervened, some due

to the extinguishing powder being sprayed in their faces causing vision and respiratory problems, and others due to the extinguisher canister itself being used to cause serious injuries to the head and extremities. the man is wanted in relation to a string of robberies with force in a number of public establishments such as hairdressers, butchers and others in Callosa de Segura and neighbouring towns.

a reminder of what the Costa Blanca technology help Group offers members. Jean of Quesada asks “Do

you know of a good English speaking mobile phone service provider in Spain?” i personally would recommend Lobster. From Lobster website “We’re Spain’s only ‘all-in-english’ mobile service. We’re SiM-only, 4G and super-easy to use.” From just €12, you get a great data deal and unlimited calls and texts between Spain, the uK and a host of other countries. they offer 3 packages. €12 for unlimited calls and 12G Bytes of data, €18 for 28 G Bytes of data and €24 for 55 G Bytes of data. Calls and texts to and from Spain, uK, denmark, Germany, Gibraltar, ireland, netherlands, norway, Portugal, Sweden and uSa are included in your plan. you can add credit to your account to cover other calls and texts to destinations and numbers not covered.Pay every 28 days. Stop and start when you like and you can keep your existing Spanish number. Various agents available or Google for Lobster Mobile. Bill of Benijofar asks “Can you control your phone with voice commands?” yes, you can in a limited way. For Android Google Assistant is an artificial intelligence–poweredvirtual

assistant developed by Google that is primarily available on mobile and smart home devices. unlike the company’s previous virtual assistant, Google now, the Google assistant can engage in two-way conversations. For Apple Siri is a virtual assistant that is part of apple inc.’s ioS, iPadoS, watchoS, macoS, operating systems. the assistant uses voice queries, gesture based control, focus-tracking and a natural-language user interface to answer questions, make recommendations, and perform actions by delegating requests to a set of internet services. the software adapts to users’ individual language usages, searches, and preferences, with continuing use. returned results are individualized. on Windows voice control is hit-or-miss, but it’s a handy way to conquer tasks quickly when it’s working well. Windows 10 has built-in voice controls for some of its most popular features already, including Cortana, which makes quick searches for apps or answers to questions a breeze. Cortana is a virtual assistant developed by Microsoft which uses the Bing search engine to perform tasks such as setting reminders and answering questions for the user.

A grand end to the year for Posh Affaire Posh Affaire band plus their talented vocalist, Claire Colton, commenced their season helping at a charity extravaganza at Lo Monte camping resort in Pilar de Horadada for Big Reds Animals on November 8th, which was a great success with many well known acts giving up their time for free for this worthy fundraiser. The band then had a busy few weeks leading up to the Christmas period which started with two dances at Casa Contenta in Rojales, which they hope to make a regular thing next year. This was closely followed with a sellout charity Christmas ball held at the Bellevall Hotel in Aspe on December 11th for the Hondon Valley Animal Rescue (HOVAR) where Posh Affaire played dance music and accompanied guest vocalist Gabriella Magari who sang Amy Winehouse’s ‘Valerie‘ with the band. Posh Affaire with vocalist Claire

Colton gave a performance at Stevie Spit’s annual Christmas Fayre on December 15th at the Emerald Isle La Florida which raised funds for two children’s homes, Elche Children’s Care Home and San Jose Obrero Orphanage. Finally the band gave a Christmas concert at The Washington in San Luis on December 18th which was well attended with the audience singing along with the carols and taking part in acting out the 12 Days of Christmas. Posh Affaire will be holding other events in the new year so keep an eye out for them and help them to support local charities plus other good causes by attending their performances. Posh Affaire Association are registered as a charity in Spain and can be contacted by email at PoshAffaireAssociation@gmail.com or visit and like their FaceBook group and page ‘Posh Affaire’.

The AA at Christmas Throughout the festive season, the Costa Blanca People will feature a real life story from real people about what it is like to suffer from Alcoholism, what they did to overcome their addiction with alcoholic, and how they lead their lives today on their road of recovery.

What is AA? Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking.

There are no dues or fees for AA membership, it is self supporting through its members’ own contributions. AA is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organisation or institution, does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety. An AA Member’s Story...

How I found AA - it gave me back my life I have never dealt with any trauma that has happened to me in my entire life. Truth is, I didn’t know how. The first biggest thing I had to deal with was being sick with cancer in New York 2008. All I did was bury it with drink because I didn’t know any other way. Lynda (one of my sisters) came over to visit me in Spain nine times in two years. I was so happy to have her. On Sept 20th 2018 Lynda dropped dead from a heart attack caused from an asthma attack. My whole world was turned upside down yet again. When I got back from the funeral slowly drank myself into a state where I didn’t know what was what. I then developed a gambling addiction as well because I needed to pay for my drinking.

I was lying to people so they would leave me alone. This continued for about 15 months before I hit rock bottom with it all and I tried to hang myself. I couldn’t take the pain anymore and thought I had no way out. I never saw it coming and never knew I was struggling and suffering from massive depression and anxiety. (I just thought I was having bad days) I was now €13,000 in debt, I had become such a liar that I started to believe myself. I couldn’t go to anyone for help because I was too proud and now I realise I had a massive fear of what people thought off me or being judged. I knew I was in trouble and I had a problem and needed help - I was a beaten man and I was exhausted from it all. I reached out for help, it was the first time in my life I was completely honest with people. It was the hardest but best step I ever took, the pain I was in and the embarrassment of it all. I went to my doctor and she put me on to councillors, and psychiatrists who put me on tablets for depression and anxiety. I couldn’t believe it at the time, that this is what my life had come to.

25

But you know what? For the first time in my life I did what I was told, and after attending that first AA meeting I can honestly say hand on heart it was the first time in my entire life I felt safe and normal and these people actually share the same thoughts I had and I felt I wasn’t on my own anymore. I started from scratch and built myself back up slowly but surely to today. Now I’m sober today, I have no worries because I gave up what I thought was the solution - alcohol. I have now learned how to deal with things that happen in life and those horrible feelings I used to have and torments in my head are now more manageable because I don’t let them bother me or leave them to fester and grow bigger to where I’ll drink on it. AA has taught me so much. It’s hard to see results at the start but boy oh boy when you do the happiness you feel is like no other you’ve felt before, a massive weight was lifted from me. A guy said to me when I first came in, he said try it for 90 days and if you don’t like it, you can have all your misery back! I took him up on it, and really feel that if I can do this - so can anyone. Please don’t let it go to the lengths I did. With this addiction it’s like an elevator going down you can choose what floor you want to get off at. I hope my story helps you. Andrew, Torrevieja, Spain.

Spain reduces isolation period The Spanish Government has reduced the Coronvirus isolation period from ten days to seven. The decision comes as the sixth wave and the evolution of the Omicron variant grip the country. In a series of changes that have rarely been seen during the pandemic, the Health Ministry and the regions agreed to hold an extraordinary meeting of the Public Health Commission recently, which unanimously decided to reduce the isolation period for positive cases from 10 to seven days - if the person in question has no symptoms by the seventh day. No PCR or antigen test will be required before that person can return to normal life. Spain is the first country in the European Union to adopt this measure; although the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States has recommended reducing isolation to five days.

“We need to find a balance between public health, mental health and the economy,” said the prime minister, Pedro Sánchez. The sixth wave has left the current strategy of active tracing of cases, confirmation of cases in all patients via the healthcare system and the tracking of contacts obsolete. The system needs to be adapted to a virus whose spread is uncontrollable but which, in the majority of cases, is causing only mild or symptomatic illness thanks to vaccines. The reduction of the isolation time will mean a considerable change in terms of the economy, and seeks to alleviate the impact on staffing levels of so many people being off sick with Covid-19. Unusually, this move does not have the blessing of the board of experts advising the government, which had requested that the authorities

waited a week before making this change. “There is still no data to take [this decision], we need a bit more time and to analyze the evidence that is appearing,” sources from the board explained. Daniel López-Acuña, a former director of emergencies at the World Health Organisation (WHO), believes that the Public Health Commission’s decision is an intermediate step. “It’s the solution between those who want to reduce isolation to five days and the current rules of 10,” he explains. “The former position was premature and there was the risk that positive cases were not yet negative, thus causing new infections, something that will also occur if there is no certainty via a test or another diagnostic test to confirm that infected people are now negative.”

Healthy start to the New Year A new year means a fresh start, and a chance to set achievable health goals for the year ahead. It’s all-too-easy to start out with grand plans for daily sunrise yoga sessions, signing up for a marathon, and ditching wine and chocolate for good, but if you start out too big, you might be doomed to fail. Right from the get-go, start the new year with small, healthy lifestyle changes, and you could be setting yourself up for your healthiest year yet. On New Year’s Day, regardless of whether or not you partied the previous night, drinking a mug of warm water with lemon juice before you eat or drink anything else will hydrate and cleanse the system and give you a feel-good boost. Make sure the last of the

choose, I’d choose my dog. The invitations have stopped from some of my friends, even though I now have a neighbour who I pay to sit the dog when I go out. I told them that I have a sitter, but it didn’t make any difference, I can’t win. I was widowed a year ago. Since then, I got a dog as I hoped it would help with the loneliness. It did. I have absolutely fallen in love with this little pup. I dote on him and he gives me such a lot of love; it’s literally given me a reason to live. The problem is

my friends have dropped me because I have to get back for him. Sometimes I take him to the bar where we meet up, but they are not all ‘dog people’, and ignore him most of the time. He’s adorable and gets a lot of attention from the other customers there. If I had to

holiday junk food is used up by the end of the year, and have a good clear out, so you’ll feel like you’re starting afresh with your eating habits in the new year. Make sure you are well stocked up on healthy, fresh food that

will do you good. But ensure you’re buying healthy food that you actually enjoy: there’s no point letting a fridge full of vegetables go bad while you order takeaway instead. If you feel like you eat healthily

and exercise, but don’t see any physical payoff, a calorietracking app, such as My Fitness Pal, might help. Many are free to use, easy to install, and help you keep a log of exactly what you’re really consuming every day. As tempting as it may be to spend the day indoors hunkered down against the cold January weather, try to get outdoors. There’s nothing like the sight of fresh, flattering workout wear to put you in the mood for getting a sweat on. See this as an investment in your future health, and treat yourself to holiday sales - look good and feel great. Prioritise your mental health at least as much as your physical health. Keep a journal of feelings and emotions can help you keep on track of how things are going.

leave these people behind. There are groups out there that welcome dogs. Also, dog parks are good places to meet other dog lovers. Have you thought about asking on a Forum for likeminded people? Dogs are social animals as well, and would enjoy meeting up for ‘play dates’. Don’t feel bad about the friends who have dropped you, it’s their problem. Unfortunately, bereavement can be a time when you find out who your friends are.

DGT Reinforces Telematic Management of Services

The General Directorate of Traffic is reinforcing telematic services, so that there will be less of a need to attend their offices to carry out trafficbased functions, so that most of the procedures related to driving licences or vehicles can be done remotely. The objective is to “continue improving citizen communication with the Administration” to make it more convenient, faster and with the same guarantees as if it were in person. In the Electronic Office, you can find and carry out everything related to the holder’s driving licence or vehicle: request a duplicate of the licence, a temporary withdrawal, the payment of a fine or consult important information related to the DGT. It is accessible in all the official languages of the State (Spanish, Catalan, Basque and Galician) and also in German, French and English. In addition, throughout the last semester of the year, new functionalities have been implemented in the miDGT app, such as the possibility of registering a regular driver of a vehicle; identifying the driver in the event of a complaint; consult the grade of an exam or request a prior appointment among others. Looking ahead to 2022, work is being done to request a duplicate of the vehicle’s physical documentation from the app, write down a temporary

cancellation or geolocate the closest centres of interest such as ITVs, driver recognition centres, driving schools or authorised centres of vehicle treatment. The miDGT application allows the driver or owner of a vehicle to carry both the driving licence and the rest of the vehicle documentation with full legal validity throughout the national territory. Since its launch in March 2020, the app has had almost 5 million downloads. During this time, 10 million accesses to digital driving and circulation permits have been requested, 500,000 updates have been made to contact and address information, 65,000 rates have been

acquired through the app or more than 50,000 vehicle reports have been generated, among other functionalities. In addition, through the Electronic Headquarters, the DGT has also created a series of specific tools so that companies and other administrations can communicate and develop their work electronically. These are some: AUES (Computer system for driving schools to process their students’ exams online), SIPP (Information System of Permit for Points for municipalities and entities with competence to sanction in traffic matters) or the computer system for Centres of Recognition of Drivers.

check on the levels, topping them up as needed, but at least once a month, so as you are never caught out. Once you know that the levels are okay, and with approved liquids only in there (hint: washing up liquid doesn’t work as well as you might think), you then need to use it. Find out the different setting on your vehicle so that you know how to use the screen wash feature. Some vehicles also have them on the rear, so check that out too. Then use the wash to keep your windscreen clear of any obstructions. It is also worth remembering that if you use your screen wash when the vehicle is moving then the trajectory of the spray may differ to that of a standing vehicle. It is also worth

keeping two other points in mind if the vehicle is moving too, such as if you spray too much, it may obscure your vision, which could be dangerous. Also, the spray may go too high and even over your vehicle, spraying whatever is behind you. Okay, that might mean the car behind gets a free windscreen wash, but for a two-wheeled vehicle that could result in dangerous conditions. That said, the screen wash is there for a purpose, because our windscreen must be kept clean at all times, so use it. By the way, remember to keep all windows clean and clear, as well as lights, mirrors and the number plates, as these form essential functions on the vehicle, and some of which are mandatory requirements to do so.

Check your Screen Wash Levels Whatever the time of year, one part of the car receives a considerable amount of abuse, and yet it is one part that must remain clear and clean in order for it to perform its function safely, that is the windscreen. During the height of summer, we find flies and bugs splattered as we drive along, park near a tree and the birds seem to use us for target practice, in the winter we have grit and debris flying from the road, and even on the inside, particles from the very fact we need to breathe can also cause problems, particularly when there is then a difference between the interior and exterior air temperature. However, all of that aside, we want to remind you of the importance of keeping your screen wash topped up. It ought to be one of your (at least) monthly rituals, when you check your lights, oil and tyres as well as other parts, making sure that your vehicle is maintained in a safe and roadworthy manner. Although the engine compartment is not an area many of us are familiar with, nor do many of us want to be, there are certain areas that are a must for every driver. Luckily, most vehicle manufacturers make the bits we need both easily accessible and easy to identify, so that we don’t have to “fiddle” with anything unnecessary. Check with your vehicle owners manual for the location of your screen wash tank, although it is often identified by a standard symbol, and then keep a

Two UK nationals in Spain - Lloyd Milen and Pamela Twissell-Cross - are named in the New Year Honours List Lloyd Milen, British Consul General for Andorra, Aragon, Balearic Islands and Catalonia has been awarded an MBE for services to British nationals in Spain and to the UK in North East Spain. Pamela Sheila Twissell-Cross, District Community Support Coordinator, Royal British Legion, Spain (District North) has been awarded an MBE for services to British nationals overseas. Both were named in the New Year Honours List, published on Saturday 1 January 2022.

Lloyd Milen With a background in health and housing, Lloyd Milen served as Vice Consul in Alicante from 2008 to 2015, when he was appointed British Consul General in Barcelona. He has responsibility for the UK Government´s relationships with the autonomous communities of Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and Aragon, and also for Andorra. He has helped to encourage new opportunities for British businesses and cultural organisations, and cemented a close relationship with the three Spanish Regional Governments and the Andorran Government. This close cooperation has been particularly noteworthy during the COVID-19 pandemic and the Balearic Government recently presented Lloyd and his team with an award in recognition of this. He also served for two years as Dean of the Consular Corps in Barcelona, promoting closer, more effective working with the authorities to everyone´s mutual benefit. In addition, Lloyd is responsible for supporting the tens of thousands of UK Nationals who live in the region and has led over 50 outreach events in person and, more recently, online; ensuring that people understood the actions they needed to take to continue living in Spain after EU Exit. As for visiting UK nationals, he has spearheaded ‘Stick with your Mates’ – an award-winning campaign to reduce the number of serious falls affecting young British visitors to the Balearics. During the 2019 season, the number of falls and fatalities more than halved, compared to the previous year, and the campaign has influenced youth safety strategies elsewhere in Spain and Southern Europe. HMA Hugh Elliott said: “Barcelona is Spain’s second-largest city and a key partner to the UK on culture, tourism and trade, so it is crucial to have a Consul General who is able to build the kind of deep relationships that Lloyd has with local, regional and national authorities and represent and promote HMG’s interests in North East Spain and Andorra so effectively. Likewise, it is no understatement to say that without his exceptional efforts, thousands of UK Nationals in Spain would find themselves in a much more difficult situation than they currently do. Since the 2016 referendum, Lloyd has made it his priority to ensure that they felt

listened to. Andin doing so, has worked closely with the Spanish authorities, ensuring close collaboration and solving problems as they arose. I, and the communities that he serves, are very grateful for his constant commitment to making a difference in their lives.” Lloyd Milen said: “Growing up as a gay kid in Middlesbrough, I never imagined I’d have the role of Consul General in a city like Barcelona, nor that I’d receive an honour such as this. It truly is amazing, and I hope it helps demonstrate to kids growing up and wondering about their future that anything is possible. It is also a reflection of the amazing team I work with across the FCDO’s network in Spain – a brilliant group of people doing extraordinary work. I’m truly thankful.”

Pamela Twissell-Cross Retiring to Spain after a long career in the NHS, Pamela Twissell-Cross became involved with the Royal British Legion as a welfare volunteer caseworker in 2011, becoming District Community Support Coordinator three years later. Despite being voluntary, the role is almost full time –coordinating all the welfare work for an area spanning the France/ Spain border right down to Almeria, including the Balearic Islands. Pamela works unstintingly to identify potential beneficiaries, make them aware of the support that the RBL can provide, and ensure they get the support they need. In 2020, Pamela and her team assisted 569 people, with 342 receiving advice and signposting, and the remaining 227 receiving further RBL support. HMA Hugh Elliott said: “As with most voluntary organisations, the COVID-19 pandemic has added to the RBL’s workload and, as their Patron in Spain, I know how busy Pamela has been over the past two years, managing and supporting an increasing number of calls to the helpline. Yet, despite the volume of work, Pamela treats each beneficiary as an individual, showing seemingly endless compassion and care. She is also a tremendous help to our consulate in Alicante, providing a level of support to prisoners, and welfare and hospitalisation cases, which we would not be able to offer alone. This honour is very richly deserved.” Pamela Twissell-Cross said:“I feel very honoured to be nominated for this honour, let alone chosen. It was a complete surprise and probably the most wonderful surprise I have ever had. I do wish my parents were still here to see it. “I feel very privileged and excited as I undertake voluntary work to give back for the wonderful life I have had and expected nothing in return. It would be impossible to achieve anything without the amazing team around me especially the caseworkers who support beneficiaries in so many ways and I cannot thank them enough for their support, ideas and trust.”

Well, it didn’t quite match the much-fabled Boxing Day of 1963 but there were plenty of goals shared around on the day after Christmas 2021. Up at the Emptyhad, it was borderline genius or farcical depending on your viewpoint. Leicester City, not known for their ability to defend this season, managed to find themselves four down within 30 minutes - thanks in the main to Youri Tielemens attempting a Christmas record of conceding three penalties in one game. The Belgian fell short by one and Brentan was seen furiously scribbling in his notebook as Man City’s fourth hit the back of the net. What could have he been writing? Surely nothing that could save this shambles - yet Leicester flew out of the second-half blocks and scored three quickuns themselves, making it 4-3. James Maddison, for 15 minutes, made it look like Peppy G signed the wrong player when he forked out 100 million big ones for Jack Grealish. Leicester awakening shook City back into a bit of life - they felt the need to score two more just to make the game safe. The final score, 6-3. Bonkers. If Marc Albrighton hadn’t managed to diving head it wide from three yards out? Who knows. At 1-0 down to a Steven Gerrardless Aston Villa, many were writing the obituary to Chelsea’s Premier League title challenge. Eduoard Mendy managed to find another way to concede a bizarre goal - this time, Matt Targett’s cross deflecting off Reece James leaving Mendy approximately 30 seconds to adjust his feet and catch the ball. The keeper, however, looked like his boots were stuck in Christmas treacle and the ball looped over his head and in. Tommy T did have a present to unwrap at halftime, though. It’s always useful when you can throw on a £90m striker when you are chasing a goal

or two and Romelu Lukaku certainly delivered - first, out-er-muscling the weakest of challenges from Tyrone Mings to head home a cross and then bouncing Targett to the floor before forcing Konza to bring him down in the area. Another hop, skip and jump from Jorginho and three points were heading back to Stamford Bridge. Arsenal are looking surprisingly good in Arsene Wenger’s favourite spot in the league - they sit happily fourth having destroyed Norwich 5-0 at Carrow Road. Bakayo Saka was doing his very best impression of Arjen Robben, cutting in from the right and scoring goals. Even Lacazette remembered how to score penalties as the Gunners opened up the gap to 5th to six points (just don’t mention the fact that Spurs have three games in hand). Speaking of Spurs, Antonio Conte is making them a lot less rubbish than they were when he turned up. A 3-0 win over Crystal Palace was clinical and saw Harry Kane notch his best Premier League goal of the season to date. Wilf Zaha clearly didn’t fancy it, so picked up two cheap yellows in the first half. West Ham’s attempt to challenge the top four is certainly over for another season. They fell 3-2 at home to Southampton who celebrated the win as if it meant they were staying up. West Ham were very good at getting back into the game but then very bad at not conceding moments later. Brighton hadn’t won in 12 matches before Brentford’s visit to the Amex. Neal Maupay, not the most consistent of goalscoring options in world football, scored the killer second just before halftime. Hang on, what day is it now? I do find this time of year stupidly confusing. I think we’ve waved goodbye to 2021 which would mean it is quite likely that 2022 is underway. The only other factual statement I have to offer is that Chelsea will not win the Premier League this season. Tommy T’s out-of-form side are randomly 10/1 not to finish in the top four which feels equally like throwing money away and potentially a corker of a bet.

Tuesday’s (Wednesday’s? Hell, I don’t know) 1-1 draw with Brighton saw the gap between Chelsea and Man City widen to eight points though the Blues are still second thanks to Liverpool deciding to take the night off against Leicester. Not improving Tuchel’s mood will be the injury to Reece James and the small matter of Romelu Lukaku going rogue and telling Sky Italia that he is “not happy” with his situation at Chelsea and he fancies a return to Inter one day. “Physically I am fine,” Lukaku told Sky Italia. “But I am not happy with the situation at Chelsea. Tuchel has chosen to play with another system. “I won’t give up. I will be professional. I am not happy with the situation but I am professional and I can’t give up now.” Lukaku being the ultimate professional there, bitching about life on national TV. But, the big Belgian might have a point - Chelsea are hardly firing on all cylinders right now and what’s the point in buying a €100m striker if you are not going to use him? Even Man United are not that daft - they seem to pick Ronaldo no matter what. United, having incurred the wrath of Ralf Rangnick for a lack of energy and bad body language in their 1-1 draw with Newcastle on Monday (definitely Monday, I remember that being Monday) clicked a little more into gear with a 3-1 win over Burnley. Scott McTominay seems like the player to have benefited most from the German’s arrival at Old Trafford, as he scored (bravely taking the ball off Ronaldo’s foot to shoot) and hit the post in the move leading to Ronaldo’s goal. He almost looked like a United midfielder of old - certainly more Bryan Robson than Eric DjembaDjemba. Don’t let the fact that Burnley hadn’t played since December 12th or won since the end of October dampen the spirits - United are back baby and have the small matter of catching Arsenal, four points ahead in 4th place. What do you mean it was only one game? Yeah, OK - you are probably right. Peppy G’s lot extended their lead to the aforementioned eight points

with a 1-0 win over Brentford. Phil Foden netted the winner making it ten straight wins in a row for City that force of nature with Chelsea and Liverpool being a little sloppy means the title is probably done. As Pep himself remarked, As Pep Guardiola remarked: “The reason they drop points is that we won 10 games in a row.” I’m not sure that is exactly how it works, Pep, but OK. The real reason for Liverpool to be even further behind City was a rare off-day for Mohamed Salah, probably still smarting from not being in Garth Crooks’ BBC Team of the Year. Salah won a penalty, missed the penalty and then headed the rebound against the bar. Kasper Schmeichel had the kind of day out that did justice to his surname and Brentan called the performance “heroic”. Liverpool had 67 touches in the Leicester box yet none of them got past the Dane. Who remembers the days of old when West Ham going 1-0 away to Watford between Christmas and New Year would have almost certainly guaranteed defeat? Not any more, thanks to the Moysiah. Ranieri’s side took the lead at Vicarage Road and then saw the Hammers rampage scoring four and all without Declan Rice. Even Mark Noble joined in and played well. All that was left was for Moyes to bemoan another daft VAR decision that went against his side well, you can’t have everything. Even at Christmas. Spurs needed a Harry Kane penalty to get a point away at 10-man Southampton. James Ward-Prowse scored for the home side in a rare nonset-piece kind of away. Conte remains unbeaten in the Premier League since his return but will see that as two points very much thrown out of the window. Norwich might as well pack it in and take the rest of the season off. They lost again, this time to a Crystal Palace side decimated through illness and injury and with Patrick Vieira holed up somewhere giving info via Whatsapp. Is Dean Smith really doing anything better than Daniel Farke was doing? Probably best not to answer that.

Harry takes top billing upon his return We have had several matches over the festive season all at the El Bosquet complex at Crevillente. I only have full details of the Abbey Anglers matches that took place. The first match was on Tuesday the 21st of December. The return of a top-notch angler to our shores Harry Billing meant that winning this event was going to be tough. Harry has been a sponsored Garbolino angler for many years and has previously won numerous big matches and festivals in the uk and also won the World Veterans

Championship. This indeed turned out to be the case with Harry obliterating the field. Drawn on peg 35 he targeted the mullet fishing very small bread punch at about a metre off the far bank and weighed in 23.660kg of virtually all mullet. In second place was Nick Bastock who fished maggot on the pole from peg 2 for 14.54kg. In Third place was Richard Smith with 9.86kg from peg 7 again fishing the pole with maggots. Other section winners were Keith Hirst, Terry Brindley and Steve higgins.

The Pairs event was won by Harry and his grateful partner Trevor Howard. The following Tuesday the 28th we again visited the complex but ran what is known as a walk off or rover. This involves names being drawn then you choose what peg you wish to fish. We did not run a pairs event or run the match in sections as we just paid the top 6 anglers and had also a mystery weight prize. The match was once again won by Harry Billing, he chose to fish peg 38 on this occasion and using his winter tactics of bread punch fished over

sloppy groundbait he caught 17.200kg of mullet. In second place was myself, Ian Brown with 10.54kg. I chose peg 7 and caught mainly carp on both the pole and maggot feeder using maggots. In third place was Richard Smith with 10.02kg from peg 2, fourth Bill Reade 9.340kg peg 26, fifth Steve Higgins 7.88kg peg B1 and sixth was Lenny Bolton with 6.84kg peg 3.

The venue did fish particularly hard and we put this down to high and low temperatures. The mystery weight was set before the match by my wife at 3.500kg. This was won by Steve Capel on peg 6 who weighed in 3.38kg. Further details can be found on our Website www.abbeyangling.es Ian Brown
