Consequences of Christmas gatherings still to come

head of the infectious diseases unit of elche General hospital, Mar Masiá, has warned that we will see the consequences of Christmas gettogethers over the next two weeks. Masiá said, “it is likely that this month

will still be tough, with many infections, and that we will have much more over these next few weeks.” She recommends that masks, social distancing and ventilation are three essential measures that we should all use

to stop the spread, explaining that these measures are “absolutely necessary. it has been shown that the main route of transmission is air...and it is clear that with a mask the risk of transmission is greatly reduced. the problem is in how

much we do not use them. that is the time when we are at risk and especially outside the workplace. We are seeing that almost all infections occur in the social environment or homes.” Masiá suggests that stricter recommendations should have been issued for social gatherings over the Christmas period. “the more different groups, the risk of transmission increases. Probably in the next two weeks we will see the consequences of all this.” Meanwhile this week, paediatric vaccination resumes in schools as children across the Valencian Community are back in the classroom. the Ministry of health is focusing on pupils aged between 5 and 8, and those aged between 9 and 11 who were not vaccinated before Christmas for

whatever reason. in order to receive the vaccine, the first step is for the child’s family to fill out, sign and return an authorization document that the school will have sent them. it is expected that this process will be completed by Wednesday, to begin inoculations on thursday. the vaccination process takes place in the schools themselves, during school hours and class by class to ensure children remain in their class groups. a family member will also be allowed to access the school to accompany the child at the time of vaccination. in the first phase of paediatric vaccination, which took place before the Christmas holidays, 107,360 students received the first dose of the Pfizer paediatric vaccine.

the ombudsman has told the orihuela City Council to cut back on the number of illuminated advertising billboards in the La regia and Playa Flamenca urbanisations. it is claimed these cause ‘inconvenience to the residents and environmental damage to the natural areas of aguamarina and Punta Glea’.

the official recommends that the local administration “check whether the signs have authorisation as they are not aware of the existence of a license for the installation of these structures”. the ombudsman also recommending that legal measures are taken against the offending companies.

Consumer sales rights all over Spain shoppers are grabbing new year sales bargains and the ministry for consumer affairs is reminding customers of their rights and what they should expect from retailers. Consumers are also reminded that, from the first day of 2022, all electrical and electronic goods come with a standard three-year guarantee, rather than the previous two. a change in the law nearly a decade ago means retailers are allowed to hold sales whenever they like, enabling them to shift end-of-line stock months after replenishing their ranges and to boost business if they are flagging, as well as permitting entire towns to hold ‘stock fairs’ across their high streets on a given day or weekend. however, most stores continue to stick to the traditional summer and january sale periods, and although many start their reduced-price windows straight after Christmas to catch the present-buying rush for the three Kings on the night of january 5 – or even just before Christmas to attract people seeking gifts – a high number of national and multi-national chains carry on with the old trend of opening their sales season the very day after the festivities finish, on 7th january. every year, the ministry for consumer affairs or Spain’s national consumer organisations – oCu and FaCua – issue advice and warnings to shoppers so they do not get caught out. Payment methods accepted by retailers, online or in physical premises, cannot be limited or substantially altered just because prices are

discounted – if they accept cards the rest of the year or for full-priced goods, they are not allowed to insist on cash in the sales or for reduced items. all other conditions of sale, purchase, guarantee and after-sales service must remain the same as at any other time and irrespective of price alterations. Cooling-off periods or return and refund windows may not be shortened during the sales or for discounted goods. For online sales, the cooling-off period, or the length of time during which products with no defects can be returned and refunded, remains at a legal minimum of 14 days and no extra costs within this timeframe may be levied on the consumer. Price labels on sale items must include the original, as well as the discounted, cost, and goods in the sales cannot be defective to ‘justify’ the fact they are cheaper; quality, integrity, appearance and functioning must be the same as at full price.

Defective Goods Where defective, but otherwise useable, good are on sale – such as a jacket with a button missing but a spare one inside, or an item of furniture with a scratch mark on the back – the nature of their imperfections must be clearly stated. Prices paid by customers must be those advertised - “we forgot to change the label,” or “someone put the wrong tag on it,” are not valid excuses. When holding sales, shops are required to state the start and end date of these clearly, and good subject to sales must be set apart from those retailed at full price. unless a limit on available numbers is prominently stated, or clothing items are separately priced on a rack and the quantity on sale can actually be seen, retailers are required to have enough cut-price stock to meet demand for a given item during the period of time advertised. this affects online sales to a greater degree, since stock limits cannot be clearly viewed by potential buyers.

Happy 100th Birthday Dorothy torrevieja resident dorothy Brown celebrated her 100th birthday recently and was delighted to receive a letter from the Queen to mark her special day. dorothy was born on december 26th 1921 in doncaster. the eldest of three girls, dorothy went to Balby high school before working for an engineering firm in the wages department until joining the WraC during the war where she rose to sergeant in motorcycle despatch. it is here, in the sergeant’s mess, where she met husband harry. harry had played a major role in the so called desert rats in north africa during WWii. despite his role, he made German friends. one particular friend had a daughter, ingrid, who spent many school holidays living in england with dorothy and harry learning english and still remains in contact to this day and visited for many years in torrevieja. after the war, dorothy and harry married and lived in doncaster. they never had children but had a close relationship with dorothy’s nephew ian. harry worked as a railway engineer which meant they moved around a lot. they loved ballroom dancing and

they set up their own dancing school. they retired in 1984 and moved to torrevieja where the couple enjoyed 12 years making many friends and having fun. they had three dogs who dorothy adored - she was even known as ‘the lady with the dogs’ as she walked them everywhere. She and harry set up another dance class in Los arcos, which is now a Chinese restaurant. harry passed away suddenly in 1996 - harry was dorothy’s one and only love so she remained by herself but did find a love of cruises! She went on Concord and the orient express, travelling all around the world - on average four times a year with regular cruising friends, until in 2015 she was taken ill and was unable to continue with her travels. in place of cruises, she enjoyed going for meals out going to her local bars Los Frutales and the irish rover where she got involved in pub fun games and, up until covid hit, celebrating her birthday there for years. dorothy’s friend and carer Lisa told the Costa Blanca People, “My husband and i have lived with dorothy for coming up to 6 years and have such fabulous memories. We had

a very special day celebrating with her- she had a card from the Queen and that in itself was a beautiful moment when she realized what she had received - something that will stay with me forever.”

Beach cleaning starts in Orihuela Costa the Councillor for road Cleaning, dámaso aparicio, has announced that the cleaning service for the Beaches of orihuela has started for 2022. the company ute Playas de orihuela awarded the contract for 436,110 euros (Vat included) and will provided beach cleaning services for one year, 4 months and 23 days, as of 1st january, 2022. the contract can be extended for two more years. all of the beachs on the coast are covered by the contract which includes, beach cleaning, sand screening, emptying bins and keeping the areas around the beaches clean and tidy. Councillor aparicio explained

“this guarantee that our beaches will remain in the best possible state throughout the year, so

that they can be enjoyed by oriolanos, visitors and tourists.”

Closure of local coastal path in mid-december orihuela town Council bricked up the entrances to a 60 metre stretch of muchused costal walkway creating a detour of 2 kilometres, a move which has caused outrage in the local community. C.L.a.r.o and its coalition allies Cambiemos introduced a motion at the recent town Council meeting slamming the closure and urging for it to be reopened as soon as possible. the motion expressed incredulity at the failure of the

PP-Ciudadanos government to take the measures required to prevent the closure since the first legal victory of the owners of urbanisation Bella Vista in 2016, who consider the Paseo to be private land. Shamefully, the motion was defeated by the joint forces of the PP and Ciudadanos parties. this was despite a key element introduced into the debate by C.L.a.r.o, namely the extreme danger which frustrated walkers risk as they sneak behind the

wall enclosing the Paseo. rather than turn round and make a 2 kilometre detour, many walkers are climbing round the fence and risking a fall down the cliff face. Given the opposition of the governing parties to the motion, it is more and more open to doubt that the government will approve the taking back of the “private” pathway and reopen the coastal Paseo by the summer as they continue have promised.

A judge recognises the right to work remotely for the first time after 2020’s lockdown, remote working has become a right that workers can avail themselves of, as long as certain circumstances are met, especially when it comes to balancing work and family life. this right to work remotely has been recognized for the first time by a Spanish judge, who has issued a ruling in which it obliges a well-known tourist company to allow one of its employees to work from her home. the ruling follows a lawsuit filed by a specialist teleoperator, who had been working for the tourism company for eleven years. this woman became a mother in 2017 and enjoyed a leave of absence that lasted for almost three years. Coinciding with the declaration of the health pandemic and mandatory confinement, the woman requested her return to work, although she claimed her right to a reduction in working hours due to the need to take care of her youngest child. She also requested that her work schedule be moved to the morning and that she be able to work from home. during the months of confinement, the woman worked from a distance, although in june she received a communication from the company, in which she was told that she had to work at the office headquarters, although the reduction in hours was accepted. the company justified that the de-escalation period had begun and that the necessary safety measures had been applied to make it difficult for its workers to

spread the virus. the woman did not agree with this order and appealed to her right to apply the equality plan that would allow the reconciliation of family, personal and work life. Faced with the refusal of the company to allow her to work from home, the worker decided to fight for her rights and brought the case to court. She appealed that her right to equality was not respected and denounced that she was being punished for her status as a woman. although the judge points out that it is true that there are discriminatory business practices between men and women, she does not believe that in this instance the company violated the right to equality. this is due to the fact that during confinement remote working was imposed on all company workers, without discrimination. however, the court also said that all workers have the right, because it is established by law, to request that their working hours be adapted so that the reconciliation of work and family life can be fulfilled. But also that such adaptation must be reasonable taking into account the organizational or productive needs of the company. in the case of this worker, the judge considered that her request to continue remote working did not represent any added difficulty for the running of the company. She emphasized that remote working is not a new concept for this company, because it was the model

the company was forced to use during the pandemic. the company tried to cite technical problems for its refusal to allow the woman to work from home but the judge did not accept this, saying that remote work had functioned well before. the judge looked into personal situation of the worker and the difficulties that she had to travel every day to company headquarters. in these circumstances, she considers that above all there is the interest of the woman’s youngest child to consider, and the obligation of the mother to care for the child. Given these specific circumstances, the judge, for the first time in a Spanish court, ruled that the worker has the right to work from home, thus avoiding the long journey every day to the headquarters of the company.

Jewellery thieves arrested torrevieja Guardia Civil have arrested two people and recovered stolen jewellery valued at more than €100,000. two young people aged 20 and 22 years old are alleged to have committed four robberies with force in different towns of Valencia and Murcia, a crime of documentary falsification and another of resistance and disobedience, for try to flee from police. on a particular night in early december, several officers of torrevieja Guardia Civil were carrying out a crime prevention checkpoint in a residential area in torrevieja, when they observed a car approaching. upon noticing the presence of the Guardia Civil, the car abruptly diverted its trajectory. Several patrol vehicles

began to pursue the car which was fleeing at full speed, and managed to catch up shortly after. the two men who were travelling in the car got out and tried, without success, to flee on foot. as a result of a subsequent investigation, officers verified that the jewels that the men were carrying at the time they were caught had been stolen from a home in Caravaca de la Cruz, in the region of Murcia. in addition, the same men had robbed three other homes in the towns of eliana and San antonio de Benageber (Valencia). the investigators found out that the thieves would monitor their targets, waiting for the residents to leave home from inside a vehicle with a false

number plate. Later, by jumping the perimeter walls, and breaking the main door or window, they would access the interior of the houses, where they stole any jewels and cash they could find. torrevieja Guardia Civil recovered various pieces of fine jewellery valued at 116,040 euros. two people have been arrested: two men aged 20 and 22, of albanian nationality. they are charged with four crimes of robbery with force, a crime of documentary falsification, and a crime of serious disobedience and resistance, for trying to flee when they were discovered by the agents. they have been made available to the torrevieja investigative Court, which has ordered prison for both until the case is heard.

When selling a furnished resale property, i like to keep things simple. Know what you’re including in the sale upfront before you’ve even found a buyer. By creating an inventory list of the furniture you will be including in the sale, before placing your property on the market will mean there’s nothing to dispute later. Written lists can’t be disputed. if it’s in black and white, there’s nothing to question. Picture this; without an inventory list, you could say to the buyer you’re leaving the property fully furnished apart from personal belongings. So, how would you interpret personal belongings? is a dining table and chairs something personal? or maybe a bed is? Was the dining table and chairs a gift? is being a gift what makes it personal to you? Without a written inventory list to give the buyer, leaves you too open for discussion and unpleasantness.

Be sure your buyers Lawyer has a copy of your inventory list too. Lawyers like to hold money back if you agreed to leave furniture and there are missing items on the day of completion, to compensate the buyer. Selling a resale home here on the Costa Blanca as “unfurnished,” is still customary to include all white goods, i.e. fridge/freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, etc. together with all light fittings and/or ceiling fans. the same goes for window coverings too. if you’re not including these items in your sale, you need to make it crystal clear to the buyer upfront. New Year - New Opportunities as 2021 closed, Covid was still the top news item and still affecting the markets. With the pandemic still sadly going strong, markets could be just as volatile and full of surprises - good and bad this year too. While some areas like technology did well in 2021, others did not. Some experts are saying, ditch the technology stock and go green, whilst others are saying don’t rush into anything at the moment. do you invest in emerging markets, or do you keep your money in uK stocks and possibly american government bonds? trying to predict the future is for some people the very essence of investing. Many thorough-minded investors

will say it’s only a part, as they focus more on company fundamentals and economic realities in an effort to pick out the best stocks. But others, for better or worse, invest on the basis of educated guesses about where the world and the economy is going. investing is intrinsically a futurelooking game. and as the pace of technological and societal change gets ever more drastic, there’s lots of future-looking to be done. the best chance of investment success comes via a portfolio that is diversified, balanced, and held for the long-term. if this all sounds a little daunting, then help is at hand with the experienced

team at Seagate Wealth. there are a number of financial advisers on the Costa Blanca so the question is “why choose Seagate?” i believe that we offer a unique service to our clients. We have a fully staffed local office in Benijofar with a backup admin team, a Client account Manager and a relationship Manager. this means that we have a team that will support you with six monthly reviews of your investment or pension and we provide full administration for withdrawals, encashments and tax guidance. do not delay making a decision, call us today. AA members’ stories throughout the festive season, every week the Costa Blanca People has been featuring a real life story from real people about what it is like to suffer from alcoholism, what they did to overcome their addiction with alcoholic, and how they lead their lives today on their road of recovery. this week, we bring the series to a close with another member’s personal journey told from their own perspective.

What is aa? alcoholics anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. the only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. there are no dues or fees for aa membership, it is self supporting through its members’ own contributions. aa is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organisation or institution, does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any causes. our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.

i was very shy and insecure, full of fear with a great feeling of inadequacy and insecurity, resulting in a sad and lonely childhood. Guess i was always an alcoholic waiting to happen.

at the age of 13, i took my first drink and have never forgotten the magical feeling. the warm glow and the tingling from head to toe - this was the missing piece of my jigsaw, i felt alive, a love affair with alcohol had begun, an affair that was to nearly destroy me in the later years. i used alcohol as a shortcut to maturity, to control every emotion i felt and it became my constant companion and best friend. it helped me to fit in, relieved my fears and took away my shyness. once i took a drink, nothing mattered. Little did i know where it would late take me or the things it would make me do.

WHAT ALCOHOL DID TO ME

By the age of 19, i was married with a child, had spent one and a half years in england, had numerous jobs, spent several nights in police cells and served a short prison sentence. i had slept in parks, bus and train stations, lived in squats and squalid rooms. alcohol had taken control, but i still refused to see it as the problem. i lived in denial and delusion, blaming my problems on anything and anyone.

i was born in dublin in 1950, the second eldest of seven children. i always felt like a square peg in a round hole, never had that sense of belonging,

For the next few years i tried to control my drinking, i did not drink in the mornings, stayed away from the pub at lunchtime but rewarded

An AA Member’s Story...

myself on the way home from work. Sometimes i made it home, others i didn’t. i never saw anything wrong with my drinking and driving, many times i did not know how i had gotten home. i suffered memory blackouts.

the illness progressed very quickly over the next couple of years. Working days became shorter, then came the lunchtime drinks and, eventually, the morning drinks. the hangovers, shakes and night sweating, the guilt, shame and remorse, these became the norm. Friends and family were constantly on my back because of my drinking. i was involved in a number of car accidents in which i should have been killed, but someone was watching over me. eventually, alcohol took its toll physically. i had lost control of my bowels and bladder and started to lose the power in my legs. i ended up weighing 7st 10lbs (50kilos). i was eventually hospitalised in 1980,a 30

year old physical and mental wreck. there i was told what the problem was and that the answer was in alcoholics anonymous. i took my last drink on 26th january 1980 and began a journey on the land road to recovery. i haven’t had a drink since. i had never seen myself a slave to alcohol, but i was and through aa, my life and my freedom were restored to me. i gained the respect and my family and friends. Getting sober was not easy. i had no idea how to cope without the crutch of alcohol. reality was not always a

nice place to be, but with the help and support of my family and alcoholics anonymous, i became a useful member to society and leaned to deal life on life’s terms. i remain in aa to this day and can see how my experiences help others suffering with the illness that is alcoholism. Seeing a newcomer in aa is a reminder to me of where i was, how far my journey in sobriety has taken me and reinforces my own personal recovery. to find out more about alcoholics anonymous, call our helpline 0034 625 912 078 or go to our website www.aacostablancasouth.com

Chorus open new Costa Blanca South Office! By Sam Kelly dipPFS, eFa, Ba (hons) Managing Partner Chorus Financial We are delighted to announce the opening of our new office in Benijofar, South Costa Blanca. Chorus Financial have clients across the whole of Spain, but with many hundreds of them based in the popular area between alicante and Murcia, and with more people moving to Chorus each day, this new office is both much needed, and indeed long overdue!

told, in writing, exactly how much your financial adviser is earning, in pounds, shillings and pence, and have all costs and charges detailed in simple, transparent terms. this means that advice and product fees are separated, and your adviser is 100% focussed on providing you with the best possible solution for your circumstances.

We had originally planned to open an office in this area in 2020, but just as we were about to put pen to paper on the lease, Coronavirus hit and the rest, as they say, is history! although in modern life, with emails, video calls, home printers and scanners, financial services can easily be provided remotely, we appreciate that having a local office is both beneficial and reassuring for clients making such significant life decisions.

the alternative to this is Spain is some opaque, complex, often multilayered charging structure, generally with a long tie-in and exit penalties, where you really have no idea who is getting their hands on your hardearned pensions and savings, and for what! often advice is focussed more on how much the adviser is being paid in hidden commissions, rather than what is best for you. Sadly, most firms still operate in this way in Spain, but at least now those in Costa Blanca South can sit down with a Chorus Financial adviser, and get truly client focussed, ethical advice without any of the usual nonsense that has given financial advisers such a bad name in Spain.

over the last half a decade Chorus Financial have grown to become by far the most trusted financial services company in the region, indeed arguably across the whole of Spain. We were the first firm to openly insist on ‘fee-based’ advice and full transparency and remain one of the only firms with this policy in Spain. What this means in a nutshell is that as a Chorus client you will be

well-known financial adviser here in Spain, who started his career in the uK working as a financial adviser for Lloyds and has been based in South Costa Blanca for the last 6 years. Chris has been very active in the local community for many years, running regular seminars, and talking finance on radio and in local newspapers. Mael joins us as a Client relationship Manager, having spent the last few years working for a popular law firm in Spain specialising in expat legal advice. Mael brings an incredible amount of experience into the role

andhuge value in terms of overall client care. Chorus Financial now have the entire Costa Blanca covered from our javea and Benijofar offices, along with our remote advice options which are available across the whole of Spain. For those of you considering financial advice in 2022 who want to work with an ethical and client focussed company, contact Chorus Financial by email on info@chorusfinancial.es, by phone on +34 965 641 163 or visit www.chorusfinancial.es for more information.

GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP Sterling breezed into the end of 2021 and came out of the holiday period with no sign of a hangover. in the first seven days of the year, it strengthened across the board, adding one and a quarter Swiss cents and picking up two fifths of a cent each from the uSd and eur. Compared with a month ago, the GBP is an average of 1.9% firmer, with no losses. From the beginning of 2021, it is an average of 5% higher with its only losses being of 1% each to the uSd and Cad. investors have proved surprisingly resilient to the litany of woe that downing Street seems incapable of bringing to an end. it could be that they are giving the GBP the benefit of the doubt because of the Bank of england’s apparent readiness to respond to rising prices, as shown by its (extremely modest) rate increase last month. the week’s uK economic data were not spectacular but were at least mostly better than forecast. the old Lady’s money and credit report for november showed mortgage approvals holding up and a switch by households from saving money to borrowing and spending it. Markit’s purchasing managers’ index readings showed slower but still comfortably positive growth.

EURO the euro was affected more by the commentary from the united States than it was by anything going on in europe. it came out of the week net unchanged against the uSd, though it did explore much of a one-cent range along the way. the eur is also practically unchanged from a month ago against the uSd. Look back a year, though, and the performance of the eur in 2021 is less impressive. it is down by an average of 2.3%—7.3% lower against the GBP and 7.8% weaker against the uSd. there was little for investors to see among the economic data. German inflation came off its 30-year peak, falling from 6% to a still-heady 5.7%. however, there were no implications for european Central Bank monetary policy, which investors still believe to be frozen for the foreseeable future. the 3.7% monthly bump in German factory orders left them just 1.3% higher on the year. Markit’s purchasing managers’ index readings put private sector growth at a “ninemonth low as pandemic flares up”.

Man arrested for €50,000 scam Guardia Civil have arrested a man believed to be the perpetrator for a €50,000 scam with victims in Torrevieja and Ibi. The Guardia Civil’s anti theft division, ROCA, launched an investigation in August after reciving a complaint froma local grape producer with a protected ‘designation of origin’ label. The grower has several important vineyards in the Medio Vinalopó region near Alicante. The alleged perpetrator of the scam contacted the fruit grower via the Internet to offer him the purchase of 45 tonnes of grapes from his crop, reaching an agreement to pay 41,000 euros for the product. The grapes would be exported by the purchasing company, for which the salesperson supposedly worked, to the United Kingdom for later sale to the public. However, the

grower delivered the grapes and never received payment. The buyer also contacted an office in Torrevieja to engage the services of an international freight transport company to send the purchased grapes. The carrier transported the 45 tons of grapes to Manchester, at a cost to the company of 8,400 euros that the salesperson never paid either. To hide his true identity, the fraudster used the identity of two men, one of them, the owner of a company based in Sagunto (Valencia), and the other, a citizen of Romanian nationality, who was supposed to receive the merchandise for distribution abroad, the supposed boss of the fraudster salesman. However, these two people were completely oblivious to what was actually happening.

European tattoo artists face coloured ink ban Tattoo artists say that a new pan-EU ban on thousands of chemicals used in colouring inks could wreak havoc their industry and individual businesses. The restrictions, which came into force last Tuesday (4th January), apply to substances that may cause cancer or other health issues and mainly affect coloured ink. The EU says the rules will reduce the number of adverse reactions. However, tattooists complain replacement inks are not easily available, and might lack the vibrancy customers want. After two years of difficulty caused by the pandemic, many businesses argue they haven’t had enough time to adjust and see the new ruling as a partial ban on business. The EU estimates that up to 12 percent of Europeans have a tattoo, and it could be double that amongst young adults. According to the latest estimates made by the Spanish Academy of Dermatology, one in three Spaniards between 18 and 35 years old has a tattoo. The updated EU regulations on chemicals, known as Reach, were agreed by all member states in 2020. The ban covers 4,000 chemicals including isopropanol alcohol,

a common ingredient in tattoo inks, although officials say substitutes are already available. The European Chemical Agency, which helped draft the new legislation, says the inks can be hazardous, causing “skin allergies and other more serious health impacts, such as genetic mutations and cancer”. It insists that the new rules are not meant to be a ban on tattoos and permanent make-

up, but simply to make them safer. The tattoo industry argues there is no firm evidence to directly link tattoos with cancer and fears the regulations could lead to more tattoos being given on the black market. Further restrictions will be introduced in a year’s time. The EU has given a grace period to two common colours, blue and green, to allow time for alternatives to be found.

UK scraps travel restrictions Pre-departure testing will no longer be required for travellers returning to England and arrivals will not have to isolate until they get a negative PCR test. Prime Minister Boris Johnson told the House of Commons the pre-departure measure, introduced a month ago, will be removed as the Omicron variant is now so prevalent the measure is “having limited impact”. From 4am last Friday (7th January), people returning to England will not have to take pre-departure tests, the British PM said. He also announced that people arriving in England will no longer have to isolate until they get a negative PCR test, but will instead have to take a lateral flow test at the end of day two after arriving. Lateral Flow tests begin the more cost effective option. If that is positive they will then have to take a confirmatory PCR test to help identify any new variants. The changes come after trade body Airlines UK and Manchester Airports Group called for the removal of all COVID testing restrictions, saying it would have no real impact on Omicron numbers. Karen Dee, head of the Airport Operators Association, said removing the restrictions “is a welcome recognition that they no longer serve a purpose, now Omicron is well-established in the UK”. She also called for the Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish governments to follow

suit and added that airports are still facing difficulties as other countries have imposed restrictions on UK arrivals, while consumer confidence “has been knocked during the crucial Christmas booking period”. Currently, fully vaccinated travellers into the UK must take a pre-departure test and self-isolate until they receive a negative result from a postarrival test. Those who are not fully vaccinated must self-isolate for 10 days after they arrive. Last month, the government removed all 11 countries on its travel “red list”, partly reversing the tightening of restrictions in order to contain the spread of Omicron from abroad. Airlines UK said at the time that costly testing and isolation measures imposed on travellers ought to be removed too for the same reason and has now reiterated that plea. The trade body and MAG -

which operates Manchester, London Stanstead and East Midlands airports - cited research they had commissioned from consultancy Oxera and analytics firm Edge Health to make the latest call. They said the research showed the removal of all testing requirements on international travel this month would not impact the spread of Omicron in the UK. It also found that the introduction of pre-departure and day two PCR testing in late November and early December respectively had little impact on the spread of Omicron in the UK, compared to a scenario where the policy of a single, day two antigen test remained the same. The companies said the tightening of travel restrictions hurt the sector last month, with MAG estimating a 30 percent hit to its recovery in passenger numbers.

Food trends for 2022 It’s safe to say that our eating habits have changed in the last couple of years. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the drive to eat more sustainably, have both contributed to this. Reducing food waste and packaging will indeed be a priority for many food manufacturers and retailers in 2022. But we’ll also see changes in the actual foods we eat and how we eat them... Flexitarian eating will continue to grow in 2022. This is the practice of reducing meat consumption but without completely committing to being vegetarian or vegan. Plant based meals and products take centre stage in at least 50 percent of meals. Meat alternatives are becoming more readily available and more tasty, in line with meat consumption decreasing. Meat grown in labs will likely go mainstream at some point, as other meat substitutes are becoming an option in many restaurants all over the world. Quality animal products will also be sought by the discerning consumer. Grass-fed meats, pure butter and free-range eggs will become more important in 2022. This is because people are more and more aware of animal wellness and the environmental impact of consuming poor-quality, cheap animal products. Potato milk is the new milk

alternative. This dairy-free alternative is made from boiled potatoes and the water the potatoes are cooked in. It’s getting increasingly popular in some parts of Europe and China, and might give dairy a run for its money in other parts of the world.

Shroom boom is also predicted in 2022. The consumption of mushrooms will also increase in 2022. So much so that more people are growing them indoors in urban settings. These fungi have a great texture and are often used as a meat replacement. And not only are they delicious and nutritious, mushroom fibers can also be used as a cheap compostable material for packaging. new grains will become a key focus as people look to grains that are sustainable and will not deplete the land. Amaranth, millet, buckwheat and kernza are all good examples. edible cannabis will continue the trend for health supplement and skin care made from cannabis. Cooking with cannabis will rise in popularity this year. Tumeric, the golden spice will continue to be super trendy. Experts predict that we will experiment with the flavour due to its numerous health benefits, adding it to cereal, puddings, oats, chia and even ice-cream. healthy fizz will be the drinks

trend of the year. We’re not talking about your regular sugary soda. Bubbly beverages that actually have a purpose will rise in popularity in 2022. Think fizzy drinks with prebiotics and botanicals, among others. Sunflower seeds and butter will see a real surge in popularity in 2022. Expect these to be added to a lot more foods. From crackers to ice cream, sunflower seeds will no longer be just an addition to your granola or trail mix. And if you thought seeds were the only sunflower product to trend in 2022, think again. Sunflower butter will become a great peanut butter alternative.

nostalgic recipes are huge all over social media and aren’t going anywhere soon. Good ol’ comfort food is still scores points this year. The rise in popularity of retro foods on the back of slow cookers and instant pots fosters a real sense of community as we all swap our chicken soup recipes. new flavours will gain followers this year. Expect hibiscus to be used to flavour numerous things, including cocktails and yogurt. This edible flower is packed with lots of vitamin C. The preference for spices and Asian flavours such as gochujang will bring some warmth and heat to bland dishes.

Cocktails will continue to be the drink of the day. Blame social media and the pandemic for “quarantinis,” but there’s more in the world of cocktails coming in 2022. One is the return of old school classic cocktails such as Blue Lagoons, Tequila Sunrises, and Long Island iced teas. These will grow in parallel with the consumption of “ecospirits,” which are made with ingredients from food waste or produce from local farms. Hence, a more sustainable option. But if you think boozy cocktails are the only ones on the rise, think again. Particularly millennial and Gen Z consumers are increasing the consumption of alcohol-free cocktails a trend that will continue into this year.

Well, it’s a good thing Newcastle United are taking the FA Cup seriously under the new ownership, isn’t it? Under the beloved Mike Ashley, Newcastle readily admitted they weren’t that bothered about the FA Cup - hence the seven 3rd round exits in 14 long seasons. It’s all different under the Saudi ownership though, right? In front of 52,000 Newcastle fans hoping to see the first step on the road to Wembley navigated with minimal fuss, Eddie Howe’s side including new signing Kieran Tripper lost 1-0 to Cambridge United. And, the League One side fully deserved it. On one hand, Newcastle can now focus their efforts on not becoming the richest club ever to play Championship football. On the other, a nice little cup run could have done wonders for their confidence. Crystal Palace briefly looked like they might be the first top-flight team to fall. They trailed Millwall at half time, but then Michael Olise realised a game of football needed to be won and set about it. A Sean Dyche-less Burnley have bigger things to worry about than a 2-1 home defeat to Huddersfield in the third round. Mind you, they’d have probably welcomed winning a game of football just to remember what it felt like. You can often sense how seriously Premier League sides will be taking the FA Cup based on the team they stick out there - so, Leicester fancy a run whereas Watford really couldn’t care less. Brendan Rodgers’ cup holders saw off the Hornets 4-1 Brentford and Brighton might both believe they are far enough away from a relegation dog-fight to see how far they can go this season. Brentford smashed Port Vale 4-1 and Brighton saw off WBA 2-1 - both away. Good signs that they are taking it seriously. We all know Man City will probably win it, and they took a stroll against

Swindon, a team they used to meet quite frequently in the lower divisions before, you know, a country bought them. Pepless City won 4-1. 15 minutes into their trip to Hull, Everton looked like a team not too bothered about Rafa’s employment status. Andros Townsend likes the guy though, and netted a winner in injury time after Hull refused to go away in 90 minutes. At least Chesterfield got a goal at Stamford Bridge, something their decent away following will remember for years to come. 10-man Southampton nicked a win at Swansea where it has to be said, the atmosphere was somewhat lacking. Sunday threatened a giant-killing or two, albeit briefly, but ultimately failed to deliver. Morecambe led Spurs with just 16 minutes to go before Antonio Conte’s men broke hearts - three goals followed including one for Harry Kane. Are we at the point where the England skipper scoring is pretty standard again so doesn’t need mentioning? Shrewsbury took a shock lead at Anfield before Liverpool’s kids (plus Virgil, Robbo and Fab) put their foot down and stamped out and hopes of an upset. Fabinho scored twice, which will never happen again. At least Norwich can test my theory of a good cup run helping a team in a relegation battle - they sneaked past

Charlton to make the hat for the 4th round as did West Ham, easing past Leeds 2-0 in a game that was a nailed on home win. Wolves could be a team to watch, and they stuffed Sheffield United 3-0 in a game that shows Wolves can score more than once if they really, really concentrate. Arsenal have a very good FA Cup 3rd Round record - ahead of their tie against Nottingham Forest they had only lost once in the previous 25. The thing is, that loss was against Forest at the City Ground and you know what? History can repeat itself once in a while and another £5m has been added to the price tag of young Brennan Johnson. I’d love to report that the 4th Round of the FA Cup looks nice and tasty. League Two Hartlepool’s reward for getting this far is navigating their way through the Croydon one-way system for a clash at Selhurst Park versus Palace. Kidderminster, a proper non-league side, welcome the Moysiah and West Ham to the Aggy. There’s all Premier League clashes between Spurs and Brighton and Everton and Brentford. 1987 winners Coventry will fancy their chances down at Southampton, Cardiff less so when they go to Liverpool. Fulham will have preferred not have to got Man City - a tie that a far smaller club could have done with. Plymouth did OK out of it, getting a game against

Abbey Angling On Tuesday the 4th of January we started off our 2022 season, fishing the 1st round of the Abbey Angling Cup at the El Bosquet complex in Crevillente. Upon our arrival the temperature was a very lowly 2 degrees but 23 hardy souls had turned up which meant almost all of the match pegs would be in the draw bag. This usually makes for much lower weights and this was indeed the case with six blanks and some very low weights. Winner on the day and continuing his good run of form was Richard Smith, drawn on peg 34 he caught crap and mullet across on the pole for

11.925kg In second place was the master, Harry Billing again drawn in his usual area, peg 32 he caught mullet on bread punch for 10.38kg. In third place from peg 40 was Nick Bastock. Nick struggled for large amounts of the match but eventually snared a few carp for 7.275kg. Other section winners were Bill Reade 4.82kg, Rusell Davidson 6.40kg,Trevor Howard 2.62kg, Lenny Bolton 6.94kg and Bill Cannon 2.600kg. The pairs event was a very close-run affair but the eventual winners were Lenny Bolton and Russell Davidson with 13.34kg

Special mention should be given to Mick Hill and venue expert Neil McBernie , who registered the lowest weight every recorded in the pairs event. Both anglers blanked and registered the first double zero at this complex. Apart from the above twosome and not to embarrass anyone but the other blanks on the day were myself, Graham Patterson, Barry Homer and Tony Felstead. One of the toughest days I can remember at the complex. Rods n Reels The following day we fished the same complex with only 10 anglers

Chelsea. Holders Leicester get a trip to Forest and the winner of United versus Villa welcome Chris Wilder’s Middlesbrough, Plucky little Cambridge? Their treat for beating Newcastle is a trip to Luton Town, poor souls. The transfer window is wide open with a chilly breeze being allowed in. Jose Mourinho, having spent most of his time in London refusing to pick young London talent has added another to his Roma ranks. Arsenal’s Ainsley Maitland-Niles is off to Italy on loan to learn exactly how out of date Mourinho is now, first hand. Steven Gerrard reminded us all to check out Philippe Coutinho’s wikipedia page to remember how good he is because, frankly, he’s not bothered showing us on the pitch for a few seasons. The Brazilian arrives at Villa Park on loan and can hang around for £33m if he impresses - which he won’t. Rumours are rife that Manchester United players are not convinced by Ralf Rangnick (and I can only assume the feeling is very much mutual) and Ronaldo’s been on the blower to his agent - crisis talks are due at Old Trafford as he wants out and fast. Never a club to let the lack of wage budget stop their hopes and dreams, Barcelona are hopeful of signing United’s Bruno Fernandes if he continues to look like a square peg in the Rangnick round hole. That’s if they don’t get Erling Haaland, you understand. Ex-Chelsea flop Alvaro Morata could be off to the Camp Nou to wait patiently alongside Ferran Torres in the line for who can actually be registered next. Spurs would like Adama Traore to replace Emerson Royale and, you’ve guessed it, this has alerted Barcelona to the fact that Adama Traore might be available and better than Emerson Royale (who they might have forgotten they sold in the summer). Lazio would like Kepa from Chelsea, because him and Sarri get on so well not well enough for them to want his £170k-a-week wages, however. And finally, Newcastle are still being linked to many and will probably sign few.

taking part. The weather was much warmer at 12 degrees but with a very chilly strong wind blowing it did feel like 2 degrees. The complex did fish much better with no blanks but I put this down to anglers having more space. We fished pegs 26 to 40 and the winner on the day was Lenny Bolton. Drawn once again on the favoured peg 26 he caught carp on both the feeder

and pole for 13kg. In second place was Nick Bastock with 12kg and in 3rd and 4th were Richard Smith and Barry homer both with 7 .700kg. The pairs competition was won by Lenny and Barry homer. Pictured is Mr Pastry, Terry Brindley, who only manage 1 carp from peg 30. Further details can be found on our website www.abbeyangling.es

4 out of 10 school transport Vehicles sanctioned

In the latest campaign by the DGT which focussed on school transport vehicles, a total of 2,563 vehicles were checked by the agents of the Guardia Civil Traffic Group, of which 998 were reported, representing an increase of 1.5% compared to the same campaign held in January. There were some positives taken from the campaign, such as the fact that only one of the school transport drivers controlled during the campaign violated the established speed limits and none tested positive in the preventive alcohol controls carried out by the agents, although 3 of them did so for drugs. Regarding the use of seat belts

in those vehicles that have them incorporated, in the inspections carried out by the agents it was found that only 5 of the vehicles that had these restraint systems presented anomalies in their operation. As has become customary in this type of campaign, administrative irregularities are the ones that have generated the greatest number of complaints, including 710 for not having the special authorisation to carry out school transport and 237 for not having taken out unlimited liability insurance, as required by law. The agents of the Guardia Civil Traffic Group have also verified that 83 school transport vehicles had deficiencies

in the service and emergency doors, as well as in their activation devices and another 8 were denounced for not having the Technical Inspection in order. In addition, 23 drivers were denounced for excess driving time or reduced rest time and another 19 for not taking a person in charge of caring for the minors on board the coach, when appropriate. Finally, with regard to the mandatory signalling that this type of vehicle must carry, 45 controlled vehicles did not carry the corresponding V-10 signal for school transport and another 15 lacked the luminous device with an emergency signal.

What is the speed limit in spain? All roads in Spain have a maximum permitted speed limit. However, that limit not only varies depending on the characteristics of the road, but also the type of vehicle, and (in some cases) the driver. As always when we talk about speed limits, we must offer the same reminder however, the maximum permitted speed is exactly that, a maximum, it is not a target, and the actual safe speed may be much lower depending on the road and weather conditions. That said, here is the overview of the generic maximum permitted speed on

the roads by vehicle type, unless signs say otherwise. PASSengeR CARS AnD MOTORCYCLeS The maximum generic speed for cars and motorcycles on motorways is 120 kilometres per hour. On secondary roads, the maximum permitted speed is 90 kilometres per hour. In towns and cities, the maximum permitted speed is 30 kilometres per hour (updated 11 May 2021). On other conventional roads out of town they cannot exceed 80 kilometres per hour. In the event of a bus carrying standing passengers (where permitted) the maximum permitted speed, whatever the type of interurban road, is 80 kilometres per hour. TRUCKS On motorways and highways, trucks, articulated vehicles, tractors and vans cannot exceed 90 kilometres per hour. On conventional roads outside of towns, the maximum permitted speed is 80 kilometres per hour. SPeCiAL TRAnSPORT Any vehicle which falls into this category, namely a bus carrying school children and displaying the yellow school bus sign, or a vehicle carrying goods classed as dangerous, the maximum permitted speed must be reduced by 10 kilometres per hour. TOWing A TRAiLeR The maximum permitted limit on motorways and highways is 90 kilometres per hour when towing a light trailer (which has a maximum mass less than or equal to 750 kg) and 80 kilometres per hour when towing a non-light trailer (greater than 750 kg). QUADS, TRiCYCLeS AnD BiCYCLeS Vehicles with three wheels or “quads” have their speed limited to 70 kilometres per hour on any type of road where they are permitted to drive. lo Crispin golf society The Society played its first game of the year on Wednesday 5th. January, an Individual Stableford Competition at Lo Romero. Twenty four members and 2 guests teed it up, but one member had enough after 9 holes, in the light of the very difficult playing conditions. Even that is something of an understatement as the wind blew ferociously throughout the day ! On the more exposed greens, putting proved very difficult. Additionally most greens were quick, adding significantly to the challenges. In truth, the course should probably have been ‘closed ‘ as the possibility of injury from wind affected wayward shots was very real. Following the game we returned to the Lo Crispin Tavern, where those who managed the very difficult conditions better than others, received their prizes and those who wanted it were supplied with Tapas, by the friendly staff.

A rather cold and windy day at La Finca. The course was in great condition with the typical fast La Finca greens. The par 3s were somewhat challenging with the wind and championship pin placements. So much so we had no twos recorded therefore it’s a rollover for next week. We did, however, have some fair scores from our division winners. Well done guys including our captain Mick Roscoe. Our thanks to the staff at La Finca for a most enjoyable day. Next week we are at Villamartin. If you wish to play as a guest or enquire about membership please visit our website https://smgs.org
