Routine eye test identifies Notice of road closures for melanoma ‘La Vuelta’ cycle race

Keith from Rojales booked a routine eye test at specsavers Ópticas in Guardamar and optician Lisa James noticed an anomaly on the retinal photograph that was taken in advance of the examination. Concerned about what this could be, she checked with specialist equipment in the test room and could see what she suspected was a large choroidal melanoma. Knowing the urgency of getting this checked by a specialist, Lisa explained the issue to the patient and wrote a referral letter to the doctor with an urgent request to refer to an eye specialist. the specialist diagnosed a melanoma and began immediate cancer treatment to the eye, saving Keith’s sight and protecting him against serious health complications. “Eye cancer is thankfully rare, with only around 250 cases of melanoma reported in adults every year in spain,” Lisa explains.“it can affect the eyeball, the conjunctiva or the eyelid and although it’s not clear why it occurs, risk factors include having lighter eye colour and pale skin, unusual moles, using sunbeds and overexposure to sunlight. unfortunately, it can be serious, as it does not always cause obvious symptoms before it is very far advanced, which makes treatment more difficult.i am grateful Keith responded to his eye test reminder, as otherwise the outcome could have been very different.” Keith adds, “it’s frightening to think that i nearly missed my two yearly eye check-up - what a mistake that would have been! at specsavers Ópticas in Guardamar, they identified an abnormal shadow behind my right eye during the examination. the director Lisa James

referred me to torrevieja hospital where a melanoma tumour was detected and i received radiotherapy at Barcelona eye hospital just in time. Missing that eye health check could have cost me my sight and caused subsequent serious illness. Please don’t miss your check up!” an eye test is an important health check a surprising amount can be revealed from an eye test, from the early stages of conditions which can permanently damage the vision such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration, to spotting warning signs of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, risk of a stroke and symptoms associated with brain tumours. to be in with the best chance of spotting the signs of health conditions you need to have a thorough eye test which includes a range of tests and the latest technology. a great tool for health checks is digital Retinal Photography which uses a camera to take a picture of the back of the eye – the only part of the human body where the microcirculation of blood can be observed directly. this technology helps to identify changes that might be associated with certain eye conditions and health complaints, and the ability to save images creates a lasting record for ongoing monitoring. if necessary, the optician can refer patients directly for further medical examination to their hospital or general practitioner. specsavers Ópticas offers comprehensive eye tests using the latest technology and all stores have a digital Retinal camera. Visit www. specsavers.es to find your nearest store or search for eye health information.

Man arrested in Albatera for attempted bank job a man has been arrested after trying to rob a bank at gunpoint this week. the incident took place in alabatera, in a branch of the sabadell bank, when the man is alleged to have threatened members of staff before fleeing and barricading himself in a nearby supermarket. an employee of the branch reported that a man who was waiting to be served approached the cashier’s desk and told the female employee: “this is a robbery”, then told her to put all the money she could in a bag he provided. the employee told him that for security they do not keep cash outside the safe, to which he has replied: “i’m not kidding” and is alleged to have pointed a gun at the woman demanding the money. after explaining to him that for security reasons, she literally couldn’t comply – and opened the drawers to allow him to check that what she was saying was true - the man is said to have

put the weapon in the bag and fled the scene. at that point, the cashier notified the director. one of the cashier’s colleagues had already noticed the situation and had pressed the silent alarm to notify the Guardia Civil. officers arrived to the bank and checked security footage for an image of the man that could be circulated to patrols and checkpoints that had been erected at potential exits from the town. Meanwhile it transpired that the man had headed to Mercadona supermarket after leaving sabadell, and it was there that he was finally arrested.

the mayor of torrevieja, Eduardo dolón, issued a municipal edict to inform residents of the road closures that will take place on saturday, February 5th, when the 4th stage of Vuelta Ciclista a la Comunidad Valenciana 2022 passes through torrevieja. the route takes place along the following streets: • Ronda José Samper García • Avda. Desiderio Rodríguez • CV-95 • CV-905 • Calle Orihuela the mayor revealed that on February 5, the following closures will take place, leaving traffic totally prohibited at the following times: - From 07:00 a.m.: traffic cut off of avda. Gregorio Marañón between Calles Pinoso and Portalicos for the assembly of the finish line, reopening to traffic from approximately 6:30 p.m. - From 3:00 p.m.: traffic closures along the rest of the route until its completion around 6:00 p.m. Given the importance of the event for torrevieja, Eduardo dolón requests the maximum collaboration on the part of all citizens.

of ‘going for a stroll’. there will be a cinema, bowling and restaurants. the town hall describes the leisure centre as of “great importance, not only locally, but also provincially and regionally.” the other aspect of the project is to regenerate a large strip of land belonging to the Port authority of the Valencian Government. the town hall believes that this are has become a barrier between the town and the sea and its use has been reduced to a transit and parking area. access to the new leisure and commercial area is planned through two large ramps that start, one from the eastern part of the port with a set of elevated pedestrian paths next to the pre-existing Paseo del dique de Levante and another from the western part of the port, near Paseo Vistalegre. the mayor of torrevieja said in his speech that thanks to the joint work of two public administrations Generalitat Valenciana and torrevieja City Council - it has been possible to join forces for common interest.

Eduardo dolón indicated that the City Council of torrevieja is also going to play an active part in the redevelopment of the port area. thus, with an initially planned investment of more than 8 million euros, the rest of the port area will be redeveloped, from the façade of the existing buildings, to

the new road that will run through the centre of the port and will replace the existing one. doing this will create a continuous esplanade, without traffic in the middle, of around 49,000 m2. this space is set to be a multipurpose pedestrian zone that will allow the traditional funfair to be integrated

into the planned space. the space will be modern in appearance but will encompass the existing trees on Paseo de la Libertad, with even more green areas added in. a bike lane will also feature, highlighting the town hall’s commitment to green mobility. this pedestrian esplanade will also be the area to host other well known events such as the May Fair and other events such as concerts, exhibitions and gastronomic events. the existing roadway on avenida de la Libertad will disappear, converting all that space into a platform for pedestrian use - enabling some space for service and emergency vehicles, and it is here where the daily market stalls will be located (popularly known as “the hippie market”), with a totally renewed and modern image. all traffic on Liberty avenue will be directed through the central road of the port, and a new connection

with Rambla Juan Mateo, lined with a roundabout that will be located at the entrance of the port. in order to facilitate this, a solution has been chosen that involves the demolition of the current Captaincy and Ports government buildings, maintaining only the central Customs building which is protected and will be renovated as such. the new public transport interchange will be located on the same site. the floating museums – including the delfín submarine – will be moved to the edge of the dock in front of the new buildings. Finally, the plans include the renovation of the raised walkway on the dique de Levante, which will be linked to the new promenade. a new fish market building will also be constructed for use by the town’s fishing fleet.

Local Police officers on the orihuela Costa night service have dismantled an important, illegal marijuana sales point, which was being run under the guise of being a cannabis association. the officers were carrying out unexpected but routine checks on establishments during the evening. When they entered the premises they found 42 people inside smoking marijuana, without masks and drinking alcohol. the officers seized 90 packages already prepared for sale, each with 3.5 grams of the

drug in each package, 19 joints prepared for smoking and about half-a-kilo of marijuana still unpackaged. there was also various items of equipment and materials necessary for the handling and packaging of marijuana (hashish oil extraction press, vacuum packing machine and precision scales). For this reason, the owner of that establishment was arrested. this ‘smokehouse’ had already been dismantled in May 2020 by night officers of the orihuela police, who seizing almost 3 kilos of marijuana.

an altogether entertaining number of Flamenco dances, some of which were performed in a different format to that which most of us have probably seen in the past. the dancing was well performed and kept everyone entertained. Should you keep hold of UK investments in Spain? however well we have settled into our new lives in spain, most uK nationals living here maintain some British habits. Whether it is a sunday roast or watching British soaps, there are some ties we do not want to lose. the same often applies for uK savings and investments. While many expats prefer to stick with what’s familiar, just how suitable are these arrangements for spain? Premium Bonds and ISAs Launched 65 years ago, around 23 million Britons have over £100 billion in Premium Bonds today. Even though they do not provide any interest earnings or capital growth – which means their value will be eroded over time by inflation – the possibility of winning a large prize continues to appeal. in spain, investment income is added to your general income for the year and taxed at the

scale rates of tax of up to 54% in the Valencian community. isas too are fully taxable in spain in the hands of spanish residents at the corresponding savings income tax rates up to 26%. this applies to income and gains from cash and share isas. some expats mistakenly think that since they are uK investments they do not need to be declared in spain, but if you are tax resident here they need to be declared and taxed. With global automatic exchange of information now in full flow under the Common Reporting standard, the spanish tax authorities are informed about some of your uK investments and compare to your tax returns. Bank interest similarly, although bank interest in the uK is tax-free under a certain threshold for uK residents, it is taxable for spanish residents at

the savings rates between 19% and 26%. With interest rates stuck at all-time lows while the cost of living creeps up, many uK savings accounts are failing to outpace inflation, so it is worth exploring alternative structures for your money. Alternative investment structures for Spain highly tax-efficient opportunities are available to residents of spain. at seagate we have a range of tax efficient products designed for spanish residents, from household names such as the Prudential international. if you would like to see how seagate can help you achieve your financial goals, then please give us a call. one of our advisers would be happy to meet with you and offer solutions that work best for you. World Cancer Day at Zenia Boulevard

World Cancer day is held each year on 4th February and raises global awareness and encourages government action. it is working towards a world where millions of preventable cancer deaths are saved and access to life-saving cancer treatment and care is available to all – no matter who you are or where you live. the initiative is led by the union for international Cancer Control and was created in 2000 and offers people the opportunity to join a positive movement and unite under one voice to face what is one of humanities greatest challenges. Each year, hundreds of activities and events take place around the world, gathering communities, organisations and individuals in schools, businesses, hospitals, marketplaces, parks, community halls, places of worship - in the streets and online - acting as a powerful reminder that we all have a role to play in reducing the global impact of cancer. Locally, Maria and the Pink Ladies and Panthers will be hosting a World Cancer day event to be held in the main square at Zenia Boulevard on Friday 4th February. there will be live entertainment on stage by some of the coast’s favourite

entertainers, supported by simon Morton of sunshine FM. the fun and fundraising will begin at 12 midday and there will be a minute’s silence at 1pm to remember all those who have lost their lives to cancer but also to support those currently living with the disease. the key theme for the day is ‘Early detection saves Lives’ and so members of the public will be able to book an early detection cancer test with the Pink Ladies at the event. 10 million people dies each year from cancer, that’s more than hiV/aids, malaria and tuberculosis combined. By 2030, experts project cancer deaths will rise to 13 million – if we don’t act. Luckily 4 in 10 cases of cancer can be prevented. Cancer Research also believes early detection is vital, but there are also things that you can do to minimise your own personal risk. smoking is the

biggest change to you make in your life to become more healthy and reduce your cancer risk. other steps include: eating healthily, reducing alcohol intake, exercise regularly, watch your weight and protect your skin against sun exposure. For further information or to book an early detection appointment, call Maria and the Pink Ladies 965 32 98 41 or pop into the office on the lower level of Flamenca Beach Commercial Centre, orihuela Costa. the office is open Monday to Friday 10am to 1pm.

Chorus open new Costa Blanca South Office! By Sam Kelly dipPFs, EFa, BA (Hons) Managing Partner Chorus Financial We are delighted to announce the opening of our new office in Benijofar, south Costa Blanca. Chorus Financial have clients across the whole of spain, but with many hundreds of them based in the popular area between alicante and Murcia, and with more people moving to Chorus each day, this new office is both much needed, and indeed long overdue!

told, in writing, exactly how much your financial adviser is earning, in pounds, shillings and pence, and have all costs and charges detailed in simple, transparent terms. this means that advice and product fees are separated, and your adviser is 100% focussed on providing you with the best possible solution for your circumstances.

We had originally planned to open an office in this area in 2020, but just as we were about to put pen to paper on the lease, Coronavirus hit and the rest, as they say, is history! although in modern life, with emails, video calls, home printers and scanners, financial services can easily be provided remotely, we appreciate that having a local office is both beneficial and reassuring for clients making such significant life decisions.

the alternative to this is spain is some opaque, complex, often multilayered charging structure, generally with a long tie-in and exit penalties, where you really have no idea who is getting their hands on your hardearned pensions and savings, and for what! often advice is focussed more on how much the adviser is being paid in hidden commissions, rather than what is best for you. sadly, most firms still operate in this way in spain, but at least now those in Costa Blanca south can sit down with a Chorus Financial adviser, and get truly client focussed, ethical advice without any of the usual nonsense that has given financial advisers such a bad name in spain.

over the last half a decade Chorus Financial have grown to become by far the most trusted financial services company in the region, indeed arguably across the whole of spain. We were the first firm to openly insist on ‘fee-based’ advice and full transparency and remain one of the only firms with this policy in spain. What this means in a nutshell is that as a Chorus client you will be

Chris has been very active in the local community for many years, running regular seminars, and talking finance on radio and in local newspapers. Mael joins us as a Client Relationship Manager, having spent the last few years working for a popular law firm in spain specialising in expat legal advice. Mael brings an incredible amount of experience into the role

andhuge value in terms of overall client care. Chorus Financial now have the entire Costa Blanca covered from our Javea and Benijofar offices, along with our remote advice options which are available across the whole of spain. For those of you considering financial advice in 2022 who want to work with an ethical and client focussed company, contact Chorus Financial by email on info@chorusfinancial.es, by phone on +34 965 641 163 or visit www.chorusfinancial.es for more information.

GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP Sterling (GBP) has continued to feel the pressure this week, wounded by a doubleedged sword combining the ongoing ‘partygate’ situation facing the prime minister, and the fallout from Wednesday’s hawkish Fed conference across the pond (USD). While investors initially saw little cause for economic concern over the findings of the inquiry into the alleged lockdown parties, it has since been suggested that the PM may be gearing up to scrap the contentious national insurance hike in a bid to save his job and win back the support of his fellow tories. the report is expected to be released to the public on Monday and may carry implications for the pound. Adding to sterling’s (GBP) woes this week were disappointing retail sales data and an 11-month low for uK business growth. Retail sales in January were down by 23% compared to seasonal norms due to the surge in omicron cases. the uK service PMi fell to 53.3 from 53.6, failing to meet the expected 54.8. Meanwhile, the uK manufacturing PMi came in at 56.9, below the previous and forecast 57.9. investors will be keeping an eye on commentary from the Bank of England next week as continuing inflationary pressures and the lingering economic threat of the pandemic mean that another rate hike is to

be expected in early February. EURO While the euro (EUR) has enjoyed a relatively stable week, it appears no match for the soaring usd. ahead of the Fed’s expected rate hikes and imminent tapering of asset purchases, the EuR/ usd has fallen to a fresh two-month low, which may not be the end of the pair’s downtrend. Even against the pound (GBP), which has had a plethora of setbacks to contend with, the euro (EUR) has failed in the end to hold its ground, with sterling climbing to an almost two-year high against the euro (EUR). On the ever-present topic of inflation, the Eurozone is forging its own path, with the European Central Bank (ECB) saying that a rate hike this year is unlikely, despite inflation sitting at a high 5%. Rising tensions between Russia and ukraine also have the potential to cause a significant blow to the European economy, with the European union currently discussing what sanctions may be imposed should Russia attack. The euro (EUR) has already suffered losses, dropping to a onemonth low, and the ECB’s Lithuanian governor GediminasŠimkus has urged politicians to step up to diffuse the conflict, warning of a major economic risk to the euro (EUR) should the situation escalate.

New Jake Gyllenhaal movie filmed in Sax the town of sax was transformed into a warzone this week as shooting took place for hollywood movie ‘the interpreter’ starring american actor Jake Gyllenhaal. the film, inspired by events during the war in afghanistan, is written and directed by Guy Richie. the area of sax known as the Camino del Coso, with old ruins and pine forests on an arid landscape, resembles the landscape of afghanistan. Residents of sax saw hundreds of vehicles arrive including

trucks, cars and minibuses as well as caravans for the use of actors, actresses, extras and directors. two tanks and a series of simulated weapons were also brought to the site ready to be used on set. Jake Gyllenhaal rose to stardom after films such as Brokeback Mountain, Proof, Jarhead and spiderman: Far From home while director Guy Ritchie, ex-husband of singer Madonna, has been behind such films such as sherlock holmes, aladdin and King

arthur: the legend of Excalibur. although the content of the film remains a secret and no detailed information is available, it has emerged that Gyllenhaal plays the role of sergeant John Kinley, who in his last period of service in afghanistan works with local translator ahmed to survey the region. it is said that the director was inspired to tell this story after various conversations with soldiers and the translators who risk their lives to help them during war conflicts.

Almoradí against animal abandonment almoradí town hall spoke out this week against animal abandonment and in collaboration with alma Peluda animal charity, wanted to send a message to make citizens aware of their responsibilities to animals. a spokesperson for the town hall said, “these have been particularly hard times for many animals, many of them given as Christmas gifts, the result of which has been an increase in their abandonment.” the town hall said that every day, more animals are found run over, or left without food, water or basic care. on the subject of animal adoption, the town hall said, “We must bear in mind that adopting is an important decision. there are many years of living together, possible veterinary bills, food, care and education that we have to keep

in mind when adopting. it is one more member of the family - it is not an alarm in a country house, a decorative accessory that we can leave locked in a room, or in the worst case, abandoned - animals do not deserve to be abandoned by the only family they know.” almoradí town hall together with social services have programs such as “somos humanymal” that involves helping vulnerable young people interact with dogs. the town hall revealed that the programme has had very successful results among the population of almoradí, raising awareness of animal protection. the town hall also wanted to take into account the work of those charities who help abandoned animals and invite people to offer support through the collection point located in almoradí town hall to donate

Yasmin of La Siesta asks” On

my Samsung phone messages I keep receiving messages saying `your play console verification code is’ and ‘Google cloud verification is’. I am receiving about 15 a day. No idea how to stop.” i looked at her Facebook account and soon realised that she had no security set. i was able to see all her posts, friends and photos. scrolling through her posts i found a post from her containing her phone number. as she was receiving sMs messages from people she did not know this is the likely reason for the messages received. i recommended changing her Facebook security settings. open your Facebook Click on your profile photo on your profile page click the 3 dots. select Follow settings to be completely anonymous apart from your Facebook friends select “friend” for each entry shown below. these are: • Who can follow me. • Who can see the people, pages and lists you follow? • Public profile info. My recommendations is not to put anything personal on Facebook. if you need to send someone your telephone number use Messenger or email.

Yasmin of La Siesta asks” Someone has told me that they have sent me an email. I have not received it. Any ideas why? Each Email system has its own automatic security system when receiving emails. in particular if its from a new contact or if the email contains links, then it will not show in their inbox. Check your trash or spam folder for any emails not received. once you accept the email subsequent email messages will appear in your inbox. Andreas asks “When sending a group email using Gmail, how do I make it so that the recipients can’t see each other’s email addresses? Use Bcc (Blind carbon copy). Create an email. in the recipient’s section select Bcc and enter the recipients in turn. if there are a lot of recipients, it would be worthwhile to set up a group. When the group is created enter the name of the group in the Bcc field. you need to do this on laptop or PC and Gmail on mobile devices does not allow sending to a group. Crime we’re most likely to fall victim to this year is fraud the crime we’re all most likely to fall victim to this year is fraud, according to the latest annual crime study carried out by the office of national statistics. Consumer association Which? also revealed in their fraud report that fraudsters impersonating legitimate organisations were the most common scams in 2021. Which? said that based on the number of people who get in touch with the consumer watchdog about scams, they were not at all surprised byt eh findings. Last year, Which? launched its scam sharer reporting tool so people could easily report scams and help Which? in its research and campaigning work. the data, revealed this week, showed that the group received a total of 11,881 scam reports between March 1st – when the tool went live – and november 1st 2021. impersonation scams accounted for the majority of reports (69%) with fraudsters most commonly pretending to be from banks, household brands, the nhs and government departments. Phone, text and email were the preferred methods used by scammers to con victims.

Top scams identified the consumer group also identified the top scams of 2021. By far the most prevalent was “there’s a problem with your amazon account”. the scam continued to do the rounds in 2021 and was by far the most reported to Which? Fraudsters target victims by phone, playing a recorded message that asks the victim to call back to fix an issue with their account. in some cases, victims were contacted by a person from a call centre. the scammers usually threaten to close your account if you don’t act quickly – which usually means handing over your payment details. Which? warned that amazon never calls customers like this, unless it’s to follow up on an issue you’ve raised. amazon phishing scams were also widespread last year. there are a variety of different warnings scammers might send to trick victims into clicking links that lead to fake amazon sites. usually, they claim your payment details need updating or include a fabricated invoice for something expensive that you didn’t order, in an attempt to worry you. you can usually spot these phishing attempts by checking to see if the email is not addressed to you personally, or the invoice is in a foreign currency. Which? advises potential victims to always sign in to your amazon account from a new browser window to check orders and payment details rather than clicking on links in emails. it can take longer, but it is definitely safer. sophisticated

design work by fraudsters can make false emails and websites look very convincing, down to the logos and typeface. the second most common scam in 2021 was the “scam call”, which took on many guises including convincing victims their national insurance number has been compromised or a very convincing sounding message from the national Crime agency. not likely to impact Britons living in spain, but certainly those who spend time in the uK and spain are at risk. in november, ofcom reported that as many as 45 million people in the uK received a scam call in the last year. as such, the watchdog ordered telecoms providers to block calls from overseas from being masked with local uK numbers – a common tactic to ensure victims answer the call. however, telecoms providers are sceptical, claiming this won’t have much impact due to internet calling technology available to fraudsters. one such phone scam that peaked last year, and continues to do the rounds, is a recorded voice message claiming to be from the national Crime agency. the sternly worded warning from the national Crime agency sounds serious and very convincing. the caller tells you to ‘press 1 to be connected to an agent.’ however, the agent is actually a scammer who will try to relieve you of your bank details. similar calls claiming to be from hMRC and warning you that you owe tax were also very common last year. these calls tend to peak around tax return season in the spring and caught a lot of people off guard last year. hMRC does not contact people in this way. Which? advises people to contact hMRC directly if you have concerns about income tax or your national insurance number.

the third most popular scams last year were text message scams – usually claiming the victim has missed a delivery or had outstanding delivery charges. these scams are prevalent in spain too with text messages appearing to be from ‘Correos’ claiming that there are charges to be paid before a parcel can be delivered. Which? said that the delivery company most impersonated last year was Royal Mail. other text scams operating like this include fake texts from banks. the message is often an alert that a new payee has been set up or an unknown transfer has taken place, which asks the recipient into clicking through on the link to check the details. the link takes them to a cloned bank website which will likely ask for login details, Pin, and other personal information. Which? says that avoiding clicking on links in texts is your best protection to avoid text scams. Criminals are able to track what mobile numbers interact with the links included in text messages, which lets them know what numbers are active. With this knowledge, they target you with more text and phone scams. other popular scams included impersonating the nhs to tell the victim to apply for their covid passport. Which? said, “at the start of 2021, we mostly had reports about fake invitations for Covid tests and jabs, as the number of cases soared and the vaccination programme ramped up. Many scams requested payment or bank details in order to book a test or a jab when these services were completely free. We saw some very convincing cloned nhs websites which were cleverly designed to dupe people into entering sensitive information, thinking they were booking their vaccinations.”

Lack of Medicines at Torrevieja Hospital unions at torrevieja hospital have revealed there is a lack of basic medicines for chronic patients and vaccines for the Community’s mandatory schedule for children.

the hospital serves around 150,000 registered inhabitants along with tourists – and the new claims come hot on the heels of a significant increase in waiting

times for patients. on surgical waiting lists, 2,497 patients are waiting to be operated on with 2,131 patients waiting more than six months.

and crispy wafer pieces encased in a milk chocolate shell. Perfect for a little evening indulgence, such as a family film night or after dinner treat, KitKat Bites deliver an intense, chocolatey hit with every mouthful. this is a grown-up twist on our muchloved brand, and we are so excited to bring KitKat Bites to the market. Spain changes gap between booster after Covid infection spanish health authorities are changing the criteria for administering a booster shot of a Covid-19 vaccine to people who have recovered from a coronavirus infection. a five-month waiting period after diagnosis is now being recommended, instead of just four weeks. the decision comes shortly after the health Ministry confirmed that omicron is now the dominant strain in spain. the highly transmissible variant represented between 79.9 percent and 98.7 percent of all coronavirus infections for the week ending on 16th January, according to samples sequenced in 14 regions, said the ministry. omicron has displaced the delta variant, which was the dominant strain in spain until december. in the second week of January, delta only accounted for 1.2% to 9.3% of sequenced cases. the ministry’s report did not mention the possible presence in spain of the omicron sub-variant Ba.2, which has already been detected in several European countries. Government spokesperson

isabel Rodríguez said that the sixth wave of the pandemic is “at a moment of flattening” despite the high case numbers, and asked people to “keep taking care of themselves so we may look at the virus in a different light in the coming months.” the Public health Committee, which represents the health Ministry as well as regional health officials, changed the

criteria for receiving a booster shot that affects people who have recovered from a coronavirus infection. From now on, this body recommends waiting five months after infection before giving a patient a third dose of a Covid-19 vaccine. until now, this waiting period had been set at just four weeks, an interval that had been widely criticised by virologists and

immunologists who felt it was too short and even alerted of the risk of causing “problems in the immune system.” the health Ministry said that available scientific evidence shows that a coronavirus infection in individuals with two vaccine doses triggers “a more potent immune response” to neutralise other variants. “after vaccination, an omicron infection is like a new dose, but a more complete one, because we’re not just exposed to one part of the virus, as we are with the vaccine, but to all its antigens. Weeks later, the body has effective antibodies. Endlessly administering dose after dose without spacing them out in time will not provide us with better protection,” explained Marcos López hoyos, president of the spanish immunology society. the flood of cases and the new guidelines mean that the administration of booster shots will be ongoing for a significant amount of time. Everyone 18 and over is eligible for one, and around 70 percent of over-40s have already received their third doses.

Generous donation from the Randy Leprechaun Popular Irish bar and music venue, The Randy Leprechaun, has made another donation to the Elche Children’s Care Home – this time for an amount of €2000. Owner Willie Delany told the Costa Blanca People, “We do a free quiz every Wednesday. Because it is free, we ask people for voluntary donations – we leave it up to them how much they put in the box, some people put in the odd fifty euro note which is great!” The quiz donation has been going at the Randy Leprechaun for a number of years now and to date, Willie and Babs estimate they have collected around €16,000 to date for the children’s home. Willie explained, “We usually go with the money before Christmas every year but with covid its been a bit late this time around. We would thank all who take part in the quiz. The prizes are small bottle of wine and a box of chocolates – but it’s tremendous fun. Thanks to all of those who have donated, as you can see it all adds up!”

I am widowed 7 years. My husband was the love of my life, and I never thought I’d meet anyone to take his place. My new friend just wandered into my life. He is such a kind man. The relationship is easy and friendly, and reminds me of the good qualities my husband had. I found myself starting to care about

him. Over the months we have been going out together, and enjoying each other’s company. He has admittedly filled an enormous gap in my life. He is divorced, and did not have a good marriage, and he has said many times that he thinks I am the person he should have met years ago, and that I am his soulmate. The problem is,

that although I like him a lot, it’s not the same as I felt for my husband; for me my husband was my soulmate. I don’t want to tell my friend how I feel, because I know he has such high regard for me. I am feeling overwhelmed to the point where I am wondering if it would be easier to walk away from this relationship to save hurting him. I would miss him though, and it seems wrong to end a loving relationship. I fear if I told him the truth, he would be deeply hurt that I don’t return his deeper feelings. I want to avoid

to you (in fact they did have an appointment, and nobody did get back to them); you need to go to the Suma office, Sorry we don’t know how to put you on the register, because of Brexit you are not allowed to be on the register. Peter said: “These are just four of the typical excuses that was given, which leaves these questions that need answering: • Do the employees inside the town hall need retraining? • Did they decide upon themselves not to be cooperative and make it awkward for residents? • Have they been given

it, but I can’t say the same words and return the sentiments. It would be a great shame to end such a good partnership wouldn’t it, when you bring each other so much joy. However, you are worried because you are both experiencing differing degrees of love. But it’s love anyway isn’t it, and in my book, any kind of love is good love. You could talk to him about how you feel, and find the right words to use to be as diplomatic

as possible and avoid hurting him. It sounds as though because his first marriage was not happy, he is brimming with this newly found emotion. Prepare something in writing, just for yourself; write it and then rewrite it, and you will find the right words. You can be honest and say that you never thought you would meet anyone else who came to mean so much to you. Keep it all positive, and don’t use the word ‘but’.

Local political party questions Town Hall tactics Under a bilateral agreement between the UK and Spain, British residents have the right to vote in post-Brexit local elections. The bilateral agreement guarantees that Brits who are official residents in Spain and Spaniards with ‘settled status’ in the UK can continue to vote in local elections after December 31st 2020. At the time there were 37 locally elected British town and city councillors in Spain, mostly in the Valencia region and Andalucía, the two Spanish regions with the highest number of British residents. The negotiations ensured that the more than 300,000 Brits officially residing in Spain can keep these two rights and will be able place their ballots – or stand – in Spain’s next local elections. The deal is a reciprocal agreement which was treated as an international treaty that was ratified by both Spain and Britain’s parliaments. However, Peter Houghton, President of the Party for the Independence of Orihuela Costa (PIOC) has recently received numerous complaints from local residents who have gone to the town hall to exercise their right to be on the voting register only to be given a range of reasons why this wasn’t possible. These included: you didn’t make an appointment, we will get back

instructions from the council 34km away in Orihuela not to cooperate? This would be breaking the reciprocal agreement between the UK and Spain. But, to be eligible to vote in the 2023 elections you have to have been on the padrón for a minimum of three years. If you have been for less than three years, you can’t vote till the following elections, which are in 2027, but if you have for three years or longer you are entitled to vote in the next elections, which are scheduled for Sunday, May 28, 2023.”

New individual-based travel restrictions Starting from 1st February, the European Union Member States are advised to remove the current restrictions, which are based on the COVID-19 situation on the traveller’s country of departure and replace them with restrictions based on the individual traveller’s situation. The EU Council has adopted a new recommendation in a bid to facilitate safe free movement. “This means that a traveller’s COVID-19 vaccination, test or recovery status, as evidenced by a valid EU digital COVID certificate, should be the key determinant. A person-based approach will substantially simplify the applicable rules and will provide additional clarity and predictability to travellers,” the Council notes in a press release announcing the recommendation. The recommendation becomes effective today Tuesday, 1st February, on the same day when the Member States shorten the validity of vaccination certificates to 270 days at most, while some of the members are set to make them even shorter. According the Council decision, all restrictions to free movement should be lifted for travellers holding an EU digital

COVID certificate that proves the holder has been vaccinated with at least two COVID-19 vaccines in the last 270 days, a certificate of recovery from COVID-19 issued in the last 180 days, or a negative result of a test taken in the last 72 hours if it is PCR or the last 24 hours if it is a rapid antigen test. Those who do not hold an EU Digital COVID certificate will have to test for COVID-19 24 hours before or after arrival. Exempt are children under the age of 12, as well as those with an essential function or need, and cross-border commuters. Commenting on the recommendation, the Commissioner for Health, Stella Kyriakides, and Commissioner for Justice, Didier Reynders, said that the move reconfirms

that the possession of a valid EU Digital COVID Certificate should be sufficient when travelling during the pandemic. “This agreement thus puts the EU Digital COVID Certificate at the heart and centre of our coordinated approach. It is important that the Member States follow up on this agreement and implement the rules agreed without delay,” the Commissioner said. While, according to her, it is up to the Member States to apply the recommendation based on their COVID-19 situation, they must discontinue the additional travel measures that have made travel more cumbersome and less predictable across the bloc in the recent weeks due to the spread of the Omicron variant.

Healthy eating from around the world It’s easy to be swept away by the latest diet trends and eating habits, which can become very frustrating to follow. However, if you look around the globe, you can find some easy and healthy tips to incorporate into your routine. Be it by slowly enjoying your meal like the French, or adding some turmeric like the Malaysians, there’s plenty to get inspired by. Greece The health benefits of the Mediterranean diets are well known by now. And even if dishes contain some highcaloric ingredients, like cheese and meat, it’s all used in moderation with a higher focus on fruits, veggies, grains, and legumes. Sweden With the cold Nordic climate, veggies don’t play a big role in Swedish cuisine. Instead, the Swedes have a big tradition of rye bread, especially the crunchy type. With tons of fiber, this type of bread will keep people fuller for longer than regular wheat. Malaysia Turmeric is a spice grown

in the Malaysian jungles, and packed with curcumin, a natural chemical with fat-fighting properties. Add it to soups, curries, and roasted vegetables.

Russia The Russians usually bake and boil their food instead of frying. And many also grow their own fruits and vegetables in the gardens of their country homes, guaranteeing healthy and organic produce. Iceland Iceland is considered one of the healthiest countries in the world, thanks to a diet high in fresh fish. As a result, Icelanders are getting lots of heart-health boosting omega-3 fatty acids. Israel The Israelis consume a lot of fruit and vegetables every day, favoring citrus fruits in particular. Grapefruits, lemons, limes, and oranges all contain vitamin C, which is ideal to keep cells and bones healthy. Finland In the late ‘60s, Finland had the highest death rates from coronary heart disease in the world. A long-term national

public health program was set up to tackle the problem by helping to develop vegetable oil production. These types of oils helped reduce the amount of saturated fat eaten and lowered cardiovascular death rates. South Korea Incorporate fermented foods like South Koreans. The bacteria in fermented plant products contribute to healthy gut bacteria and ease inflammatory responses in the body. In South Korea, kimchi (fermented cabbage and radish) is served at every meal. Portugal A big consumer of olive oil, this is also one of Portugal’s national food products. Found in almost all dishes, it’s packed with antioxidants and hearthealthy fats. Chad Like many African countries, Chad is among some of the healthiest countries diet-wise. With ingredients coming straight from the markets, their food is naturally free of preservatives and any unnecessary saturated fats and salt.

Wispa bars the latest hit by shrinkflation One of the UK’s favourite chocolate bars has become the latest to be hit by ‘shrinkflation’ as reports suggest they are now seven per cent smaller. “Shrinkflation” is described as a phenomenon where a product’s size or quality reduces while the price remains the same. Data suggest the Wipsa Duo, a version with two smaller bars in a pack, have recently been reduced by almost 4g, or seven per cent, while still costing the same. A 10-pack of Wispas

meanwhile have now shrunk by 18g while a four-pack has lost 8.4g. One disgruntled Tesco customer took to the supermarket’s website to vent their anger. They said: “How can they possibly make the bars any smaller and for the same price as the previous 10 x 25.5g. “This is no longer value for money.” While another said: “Great taste shame they are getting small in value.” A spokesperson for Cadbury

told the press: “From time to time we make changes to our product ranges while continuing to deliver the great quality and taste our fans enjoy. There are a number of reasons for this. These include adjusting portion sizes in line with our proactive strategy to help tackle obesity – and in July 2020, we committed to introducing a 200kcal cap on our Cadbury multipacks by the end of 2021, which we have now implemented. “On other occasions, like many food businesses, we might need to slightly reduce the size or weight of a specific product, based on increased commodity and operational costs, to ensure that they remain affordable while maintaining the quality and taste which customers expect.”

Food prices still on the rise Consumers should brace themselves for a higher cost of eating out, says global agri food market intelligence provider, Tridge. Meals favoured by British expats in Spain are set to rise steeply as supply chain issues have led to price hikes for many popular ingredients. Tridge tracked the price points of ingredients of popular dishes to demonstrate how price rises might impact manufacturers, restaurants, supermarkets and ultimately, the end consumer, Tridge gave three key examples popular with Britons: - The Full English Breakfast:

Staple ingredients of the full English have risen year on year – 74% for beans, 7% for eggs, 115% for tomatoes, 19% for mushrooms and 2.5% for pork. - Fish and Chips: Cod wholesale prices have risen by 98%,

potato by 40% and sunflower oil by 118% compared to 2020 prices - Chicken Tikka Masala: Chicken has risen by 80%, dried chilli pepper by 50%, curry powder by 45%, onion by 22% and lemon by 20%.

Specsavers donates more than €7,500 to the ONCE Foundation for Guide Dogs Specsavers Ópticashas donated €7,730.47 to the ONCE Foundation for Guide Dogs (FOPG), which will be used to continue the work being done by this charity to allow these animals to be the eyes of the blind. The optical group has been fundraising for FOPG since March 2020, with all nine Specsavers Ópticas stores in Spain contributing to the total. This well exceeds the target of 5,000€ set at the beginning of the campaign and will support the important work of the FOPG and the services it provides. Jorge Martínez de Lizarduy Araico, of Specsavers Ópticas, says:‘We are passionate about protecting vision and offering the best care for customers with visual deficiencies, so our collaboration with FOPG has been the perfect way to give back and ensure those people with vision loss in Spain get the help and resources they need. I am delighted to return to the FOPG breeding and training centre in Madrid to present the charity with this donation. Vision loss can be incredibly isolating, leading to feelings of loneliness and depression. However, thanks to the foundation and the work they do, many people can gain a new sense of independence. Receiving a guide dog really changes lives and so we’re very pleased to have been able to contribute to this important cause. Thank you to all our customers and store directors for their contributions.’ The Managing Director of FOPG, Maria

Jesús Varela, commented ‘Specsavers Ópticas’ active involvement in our work, throughout this fundraising campaign and donation, is a sign of appreciation for what we do and a show of support for people with severe visual impairment in this country. It is so wonderful that they have done their bit to raise funds and allow us to contribute even more to improving mobility and independence for the blind. Collaborations like these are even more important at present, as our Foundation is in a phase of ambitious growth, with a plan to expand our facilities and train more professionals to allow us to significantly increase the number of guide dogs we are able to deliver each year.’ Specsavers Ópticas is an optical groupwith stores on the Costa Blanca (Calpe, Jávea, Torrevieja, Benidorm, Guardamar del Segura and La Zenia), on the Costa del Sol (Fuengirola and Marbella) and in Mallorca (Santa Ponça). It is committed to helping those with eye health problems to improve their quality of life. To support this goal, they hold regular charitable campaigns such as this and offer complete visual health assessments as part of their

eye tests, free of charge. They believe an eye test should also be a health check, as it can help the optometrists to identify changes in the eye which can be associatedwith certain treatable eye conditions. Where necessary the optometrist will refer their customers to the correct medical professional to carry out further tests and diagnose conditions before itaffects their sight. Chinese New Year The 2022 Chinese New Year starts today, Tuesday 1st February and this year is the Year of the Tiger. Beginning with New Year’s Eve, the night before the first day of the Chinese lunar year, various customs and rituals continue right up until the Lantern Festival on the fifteenth day. There are ceremonies of sacrificial offerings to gods and ancestors, and people thoroughly clean their homes and create colourful festive snack platters. Firecrackers are set off everywhere, while celebrants perform traditional Chinese dances and create stunning decorations. These include hanging New Year images, paper cuttings and red spheres of satin cloth, with couplets written onto traditional red vertical displays hung on either side of the front door. An ancient legend tells of the Nian (which is also the Chinese word for ‘year’) – a beast as large as an ox that could eat humans. The Nian would open its huge mouth each year after the winter crops had been stored and come out to hunt, causing great fear. But humans gradually discovered that the Nian was afraid of three things: fire, loud noises and the colour red. So each year, just before the Nian was due to appear, every household would hang a red peach wood board in front of

the entrance to their home and light a fire. New Year’s Eve, they would stay up all night making noises by striking and hitting things, to keep the Nian at bay. After daybreak, people emerged from their homes, congratulated one another for having entered the New Year safely, then share a celebratory feast. The year ahead The Year of the Rat (2020) was about survival, and the Year of the Ox (2021) was about anchoring ourselves in a new reality. The Year of the Tiger will be about making big changes. This will be a year of risk-taking and adventure. We’re finding enthusiasm again, both for ourselves and for others. Everyone is fired up, generosity is at an all-time high and social progress feels possible again. The Tiger is associated with Yang (masculine, active) energy. Tigers do things their own way and hate being told what to do.

Expect things to rapidly change this year. Sudden disruptions in career, romance and home life should be expected. Some of us will thrive through taking great leaps, while others might crash and burn. So while it’s important to follow our intuition and run with our wildest dreams, that means we also have to keep our egos in check. In addition to the animals, the Chinese Zodiac also cycles through five elemental types. So, this is not only the Year of the Tiger, it’s the year of the Water Tiger. Water years bring out our emotions more than any of the other elements. Water Tigers are family-oriented and have wonderful interpersonal relationships. Though they’re extremely driven and can be brash, their goal is always to do what’s best for everyone, not just for themselves. Overall, this is a year for switching careers, building teams or getting back into creative projects.

First heart and liver transplant in Spain A double transplant of a heart and liver in the same operation has been carried out successfully in Spain, saving the life of a woman who was terminally ill, according to the team at Madrid’s Gregorio Marañón Hospital. The 12-hour procedure, involving 30 professionals, was conducted after the patient had undergone surgery known as ‘Fontan’, which involves separating the blood circulation in the body from that of the lungs. It is typically performed on people who, like the woman in question, are born with just one ventricle, or ‘heart chamber’, instead of two. Healthy humans and animals have two ventricles – one to pump ‘new’ blood around the system, and the other to collect up ‘old’ blood once it has finished pumping. ‘Fontan’ surgery is life-saving where it works, but can cause liver damage over time – and, if it does not work, both organs will fail. The woman operated on was in this situation, and her only hope of even short-term survival was a liver and heart transplant. Both needed to be performed

at once, as one transplant followed by another would result in certain death – but only a small handful of hospitals in the world have the experience required to carry out such a delicate and complex procedure. This enormous task was carried out at the Gregorio Marañón, as it is the national referral centre for congenital heart conditions – as well as being a pioneer in the field and staffed by experts in this area, it has been the one hospital in Spain that patients with complicated or serious cardiology problems suffered from birth rather than acquired have been sent to automatically since 2010. To this end, the woman who went through the double

transplant was not local, and had to travel quite some distance from another part of the country. Happily, her own efforts and the surgical team’s marathon working day paid off: The patient was transferred straight to intensive care after she left theatre, but then moved onto a mainstream ward within a matter of days – and has since been discharged. She will need regular checkups and follow-up treatment, as well as the immune-suppressing drugs transplant patients are given for life to stop their bodies rejecting the new organs. Otherwise, she is expected to live a normal life, with a normal life expectancy, and carry out all normal-life activities.

Warning to Spectacle Wearers The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), which warns about the dangers of ‘road hypnosis’, has issued a warning for all those drivers who use glasses or contact lenses while driving. According to Elena Valdés, medical advisor to the DGT, there are a number of tips to apply while driving if you have visual defects. If you use glasses or contact lenses, the DGT, which clarifies the cases of illnesses in which you can have your licence withdrawn, recommends that they be used throughout the journey to guarantee the best possible vision at the wheel. For those drivers who need glasses ‘up close’, it is recommended to use progressive lenses to be able to correctly observe the information on the vehicle’s dashboard. In addition, when the sun dazzles the road, sunglasses will mitigate the sensation of glare, so it is advisable to carry them in the vehicle whenever you are driving during the day. On the other hand, if the driver has problems at night to observe the road optimally, the DGT recommends trying to avoid driving as much as possible during these hours or in bad weather. As speed increases, the field of view naturally narrows. Given this and if you have visual problems, it is advisable to reduce it to avoid the so-called ‘tunnel effect’, that is, the narrowing of vision towards the central part of the road.

The DGT also poses a series of limitations when the driver has to attend the ophthalmologist’s review. In the event that the doctor has to dilate the pupils during the consultation, driving is not recommended until the symptoms disappear. Of course, if the driver takes any drug

or substance that alters vision, driving should be avoided, and the doctor’s instructions should be followed at all times. It is no longer mandatory to carry a spare set of spectacles with you in the car, but this is advisable in case anything happens to your original pair.

New Manual Aimed at Elderly Road Users The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has drawn up a new manual which it hopes will improve the safety of elderly road users, since people over 64 years of age represent 19.6 percent of the Spanish population, 16.5 percent of drivers and 26 percent of those killed in road accidents in Spain. Under the name of “Itinerarios” it is a Spanish-language manual of activities, which is already available on the DGT website, which has been developed with the Association of Adult Education Entities. It has contributions from educators, geriatricians, sociocultural animators, clinic assistants, doctors, psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists, drivers,

and local police officers, among other professionals from different fields. The selected contents are related to the main road role of the elderly, that of being a pedestrian, and the risks related to it, reports the DGT. The manual focuses on how to walk down the street, avoid obstacles, stop to rest, talk safely on the mobile, share the road with traditional vehicles and especially with bikes and scooters. It also addresses how to walk on interurban roads, go up and down

curbs, steps, crossings regulated by road markings, traffic lights or traffic officers and unregulated crossings, including crossroads, find your way around, identify streets and routes and recognise signals.

Cannabis impairs driving ability for 4 hours A new study has found that Cannabis can impair a person’s ability to drive for up to four hours after the drug is used. A new report published this week by the University of California found that “Although performance was improving at 3.5 hours, recovery was not fully seen until 4.5 hours post smoking.” The researchers from the Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research at the University of California San Diego looked at 191 regular cannabis users over the course of two years and found that smoking cannabis led to significantly declined simulated driving scores. The participants were given either a placebo cigarette or a cannabis cigarette containing either 5.9 % or 13.4 % levels of delta-9tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound in cannabis, explained researchers. The study found participants in

the THC group showed a significant decline in Composite Drive Scores (CDS) related to a 25-minute simulated driving experience. The CDS assessed driving variables that included following a lead car while varying speeds, noting swerving in their lane, and responding to divided attention tasks, according to the study. The greatest difference in driving scores between the placebo group and the THC group was noted by researchers at 30 minutes and 1 hour and 30 minutes after the time of inhaling the cannabis cigarette. The differences narrowed at around 3.5 hours with no differences between the two groups’ abilities at 4.5 hours. The researchers said in the report that the participants were hesitant to drive immediately after smoking but nearly 69% of the participants reported they were ready to drive at 1 hour 30 minutes post inhalation, setting up a potentially dangerous scenario.

“Although users in the THC group felt impaired and were hesitant to drive at 30 minutes, by 1 hour-30 minutes they believed the impairment was wearing off and were more willing to drive. This was despite their performance not significantly improving from the 30 minute point,” Senior author Thomas Marcotte, PhD, co-director of CMCR and a professor of psychiatry at UC San Diego School of Medicine, said in the University news release. Marcotte added, “This may indicate a false sense of safety, and these first few hours may constitute a period of greatest risk since users are selfevaluating whether it is safe to drive.” The researchers said that the study emphasizes the challenge in understanding the relationship between cannabis consumption and an individual’s ability to drive as well as identifying which individuals are most at risk for impaired driving when using cannabis.

Spanish pharmacies sold a total of 9,071,907 COVID-19 tests between January 17 to 23, a new record. The sale of self-diagnostic antigen tests set a new record and even exceeded Christmas figures, when more than 9 million units were sold in pharmacies. During the third week of the year (from 17 to 23 January) sales soared ass this was the first time the pricing of the tests was capped by the government at a maximum of €2.94. Non-prescription sales of antigen tests officially began in Spain on July 21, after being published in the Official State Gazette and approved the day before by the Council of Ministers. Prior to this date it was only possible to acquire them with a medical prescription, so their availability was very limited.

Catalonia leads in terms of sales of antigen tests with 2,101,742 purchased there alone in the week of January 17 to 23, 2022. Catalona is followed by Andalusia (1,631,981), Madrid (1,255,655), Valencian Community (1,198,059), Galicia (463,051), Basque Country (362,990), Canary Islands (344,297), Castilla y León (327,103), Murcia (278,536). ), Castile-La Mancha (262,680), Aragon (219,166), Asturias (180,645), Balearic Islands (137,839), Extremadura (129,621), Cantabria (86,747), Navarra (64,643) and La Rioja (7,143). The latest IQVIA report points out that pharmacies “need to restock in order to meet the demand for the coming weeks.”

It’s not really oregano A new study has shown that what we buy in supermarkets as ‘oregano’ is not really pure oregano at all, with some brands selling a mixture that contains chopped up olive leaves. Other herbs and spices were also found to contain extra ingredients of varying percentages. The European Commission carried out an investigation into the authenticity of aromatic herbs and spices across 1,900 products marketed in 21 EU countries, and has discovered that half of the marketed oregano is adulterated. 48% of the oregano samples were found to be adulterated with cheaper plant material (with olive

leaves in most cases). Oregano was followed by pepper (17%), cumin (14%), turmeric (11%), saffron (11%) and paprika (6%). In addition, unauthorized dyes were found in 2% of the samples. Given the high volume of fraud detected and the risks that it could pose to the health of consumers, Spain’s consumer association OCU has asked the national authorities to strengthen controls both in customs and in the internal market, as requested by the European Commission. This was the largest study of its type carried out, with samples tested by the Joint Research Center (JRC).

Match Fishing Report - 18th January Abbey Angling On Tuesday the 18th of January we fished the third round of the Abbey Angling cup at the El Bosquet complex. Upon arrival it was still dark and the temperature was –2.5degress with quite a heavy overnight frost. Couple this with a full moon and things were not looking good for a pleasant day’s fishing. This was exactly the case, the complex fished as bad as I have ever seen it with 5 dry nets and 5 weights below 1kg from the 21 competitors. Winner on the day and climbing into pole position in the Abbey angling cup was Richard Smith. Richard was drawn on peg 5 on the new section and fished the pole across on maggot to take carp

and mullet for 11.02kg. In second place from peg 27 was the old stager, Bill Reade. Bill fished maggot or bread to catch 9.04kg of carp. In third place was the very consistent Nick Bastock who caught again on the pole with maggot for 8.16kg from peg 2. The pairs event was won by Bill Reade and Tony Felstead with quite a lowly 13.52kg. Other section winners were Neil McBernie 6.74kg, Mick Hill 0.24kg, Harry Billing 3.50kg and Russell Davidson 5.96kg.

Match Fishing Report - 25h January Abbey Angling On Tuesday the 25th of January we made the first trip of the year to the Rio Segura in Murcia town centre for the 4th round of the abbey angling cup. Reports from another club predicted a very tricky match but this was far from the case with the venue fishing as good as we have ever seen it at this time of year. The weather was about 10 degrees and a slight drizzle made conditions a little wet at the start. The match was pegged with 8 pegs after the weir and 4 the other side of the first bridge. Winner on the day from the end peg 12 was Mick Hill. Mick fished the method feeder tight across with a secret formula patent applied for wafter to take carp most of the day for 16.24kg. In second place drawn on the first proper peg after the bridge was the ever-consistent Bill Reade. Bill used similar tactics for a very credible 15.02kg. In third place was Richard King, drawn on the first peg before the weir he fished corn or wafter again on the

method feeder for 14.860kg. The other section winner was Paul Burton with 9.520kg and the pairs event which was a very close-run affair was won by Graham Patterson and Mick hill with 24.34kg.

Rods N Reels The following day we returned to the El Bosquet complex. The complex was wet but fishable from the previous days rains and it was decided to fish pegs 17 to 40. Running out a comfortable winner with not a moan in sight was John Waples. Draw in familiar territory on peg 22 he took full advantage and weighed in a good weight of 19.14kg of carp caught across on the maggot. In second place was the consistent Richard Smith with 11.08kg from peg 34 using similar tactics. The third place went to Steve Higgins who had 9.74kg from peg 40 again on the maggot and pole. The other section was won by Trevor Howard with 4.34kg from peg 26. The pairs event was won by John Waples and Harry Billing with over 27KG.

arrival and we decided to also fish pegs 18 to 20 along with the usual pegs. Runaway winner was the venue specialist who has been having a tough time of it lately Neil McBernie. Neil was drawn on the end peg 7 and fished maggots across for a convincing win with 19.84kg. In second place who used similar tactics but this time from peg 22 was Steve Higgins who weighed in a credible 13.66kg of all carp. In third place was John “I can moan underwater” Waples who moaned his way to 11.42kg from peg 22 fishing once again maggots tight to the far bank. The other section winner was Bill Reade with 11.42kg and the pairs

Imanyo Golf Society 9 Iron Cup 19th January at La Torre Once again, we would like to thank Mo Chaplin for sponsoring the 9 Iron Cup, which is our first sponsored cup competition of 2022. Twenty-one players travelled for the first time to play at La Torre golf, the course was in reasonable condition although the tee boxes and a few fairways needed more attention, on the plus side all the bunkers were full of sand and there were many bunkers! You can see how difficult the course was by the scores as nobody played to their HCP. The weather was a cold start and eventually reached a pleasant 70 degrees with a light wind, perfect for a day’s golf. The format was full handicap Stableford split into two groups, A and B with a winner from each group, one being the overall winner.

Winner from group A was “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly with 30 points, runner up in group A was “He’s on Fire“ Steve Burns with 29points and third place went to Colin Deare with 27 points. Nearest the pins winners in group A were Steve Burns hole 7, Colin Deare hole 10 and Sean McGuinness hole 17, group B winners were Mick Billins hole 6, Andy Neil hole 13 and Mo Chaplin hole 15, best front 9 went to Steve Burns with 17 points and best back 9 went to Andy Neil with 19 points. The Two’s pot was shared between Sean McGuinness on hole 9 and Mick Billins on hole 17 winning €10.00 each. The Football card was won by Brian Court with Middlesbrough winning €40 and €40 to our Charities for 2022.

The winner of the 9 Iron Cup was “The Joker” Mick Billinsfrom group B with a score of 34 points, runner up in group B was “Lady Champion 2021” Mo Chaplin with 32 points, third place went

TALES FROM THE TOp FLIGHT position they don’t really need to fill. Howe has accepted that wearing the same colour kit is not enough to persuade Aaron Ramsey to leave Turin and that Ashley Young would rather stay at home with the Villa - he’s still hopeful that Eddie Nkietiah might be allowed to leave Arsenal, even if the imminent departure of Yo-Pierre could mean that Alex Lacazette ends up being the only real striker at the Emirates. After all, they won’t get their house in order well enough to actually sign a new one. And if Howe can’t get Nkietiah, Palace might - meaning Newcastle might push ahead with a plan to sign Atalanta’s Duvan Zapata. Keeping up? Sure? Well, if you can remember all that add the fact that Aston Villa’s Matt Targett is also on the, er, target list.

n CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Finally, a gap in the football calendar I can get on board with. I must admit, when I realised that the late-2020 cries of “well, at least there’s not another international break until…” were accurate but also kind of inaccurate I was a little downcast, crestfallen even. With all the recent cancellations, it did feel a little strange that the Premier League went ahead with their ‘winter break’ but it has served one useful purpose - it’s allowed us to stay on top of all the late transfer tomfoolery that will occur even if almost everything I muse over here will be out-of-date by the time you actually get around to reading this. Even with the transfer window madness, some players have had to jet off on actual international duty - whilst their club teammates sun it up on some kind of ‘warm weather training’ jolly somewhere outside of the UK. Therefore, early credit has to go to Liverpool keeper, Alisson. The shot-stopper was so keen to cut his international duty short he managed to get sent off TWICE for Brazil against Ecuador - only for VAR to kill his cunning plan TWICE and rescind the red card. But back to the important stuff clubs wasting millions of pounds in late panic-mode football player shopping, forgetting almost entirely that they possibly have the solution tucked down the back of the sofa somewhere in the shape of the midfielder they cut from the first team squad in August and made train with the Academy boys. Of course, those of you reading this on Tuesday morning will note that almost everything written here is completely out-of-date but I promise you - on Sunday afternoon, some of this rubbish was hot off the press. Firstly, Frank Lampard - he’s finally found a job he deems worthy of having a crack at and it just so happens to be at Everton (which does beg the question, how badly run were the clubs he has allegedly turned down in the year since getting the Chelsea boot?) Everton confirmed the Chelsea legend on Sunday, having seen enough that weird bloke from Portugal who thought appearing on Sky Sports News was part of the interview process, Wayne Rooney (who turned down the offer of an interview, correctly surmising Derby County was a much more stable gig) and Duncan Ferguson who is likely to forever be the Goodison Park bridesmaid. Lampard has lots to sort out at the Ev and doesn’t have the luxury of a Chelsea Academy production line to fall back on this time - or the kind of transfer bunce he was handed by Roman Abramovich. Still, his hands are not tied that much that he can’t free Donny van der Beek from his Manchester United prison.

Everton won the race for the Dutch midfielder by offering to pay all his wages - Crystal Palace were willing to pay 85% of the several hundred thousands of pounds a week. Two years ago, Van der Beek was feeding the likes of Hakim Ziyech and Mathijs de Light for Ajax. Two days ago he was knocking about with Ronaldo and Rafa Varane. On Tuesday, it could well be Solomon Rondon and Michael Keane. Football, eh? Lamps is already being linked to several things Chelsea - coaches Joe Edwards and Anthony Barry would be more than welcome on his staff and he’d also happily take Ruben LoftusCheek whilst he’s there. The Toffees are not the only club on Merseyside squirriling away at the end of the window. King Klopp has a new minion in the shape of Porto’s Lucas Diaz who Liverpool successfully backdoored from Tottenham. Antonio Conte believed he had got his hands on the goalscoring wideman only to find that he was off to Anfield the second last-minute defeat faced by Spurs in the preceding few days after Adama Traore opted for the Spanish sunshine and Barcelona rather than being asked to play as a wing-back by the Italian taskmaster. If things couldn’t have got worse for Conte, Tottenham were also rejected by a non-league teenage winger. Ollie Tanner of sixth tier Lewes rejected a move to the greatest stadium in the world as he was unable to agree personal terms. Maybe he didn’t fancy being a wingback either? It’s not all bad news for Tottenham, however - despite missing out on their first choices they are having to slum it by scraping the bottom of the Juventus barrel by bringing in the exceptionally talented Kulusevski and Bentancur. Now, if they can just find someone to take Ndombele and Alli off their hands it has

not been a complete disaster. Liverpool are hoping to followup their first-class bit of transfer gazumping with a move for Fulham’s wonderkid Fabio Carvalho - at least half of the reason Mitrovic is banging in goals for fun in the Championship. We can also deal in some Newcastle facts - they’ve snaffled up Lyon star midfielder Bruno Guimaraes for the best part of 50m big ones. He’s actually quite good and is no doubt thrilled at the prospect of being Newcastle’s first Brazilian since Mirandinha in the 80s. Well, that and hitting Chris Wood early. Eddie Howe wanted a whole new defence by the time February arrived and has met with more resistance than his current back four is capable of showing - Diego Carlos didn’t happen, Sven Botman didn’t happen but it does look like Big Dan Burn will happen for around £13m. Brighton kept nudging the price up because, you know, Saudi Arabian prices. Jesse Lingard might have to blame Mason Greenwood for not being allowed to go to St James’ Park on loan rather than United demanding a £10m bonus if the Magpies stay up. News broke on Sunday that Dean Henderson might have finally badgered Ralf Rangnick enough to get a loan away from his place on the United bench - to Newcastle, of course, oddly a rare

West Ham are throwing bids around like paper aeroplanes - Leeds have turned down £50m each for Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips. The Hammers have also tried to get Armando Broja and Ben Brereton-Diaz in the last few days and met firm nos on both at the price suggested. One that could well happen/have happened/ might have been a mere figment of my imagination is Duleta-Carr from Marseille. A defender, you know? The one who didn’t fancy it a year ago but has possibly been tempted by the chance of linking up with Craig Dawson or a hefty payrise. Wolves won’t be letting Ruben Neves go for a penny less than £40m, a statement designed to warn off the circling Manchester United and Arsenal. Jose Mourinho is hoping Arsenal sign Neves or even Villa’s Douglas Luiz so it means he can finally get it on with Granit Xhaka. Brentford are keeping fingers and toes crossed that Christian Eriksen passes his medical so they can get him through the door - news that will surely cheer up Ivan Toney. Leeds have done us all a massive favour by inquiring about Chelsea’s Kenedy - that massive favour being reminding us Kenedy is still technically on Chelsea’s books. Barcelona have clicked that they probably need to sell more players if

they keep signing them at the rate they are doing, so problem child Ousmane Dembele is once again being touted around the Premier League for around £18m. Someone is bound to panic and buy him. Getting him out will allow them to bring in Aubemeyang on loan, which will mean that Arsenal try (and fail) to sign Alvaro Morata. Man City, a club irritatingly not feeling the need to get caught up in any of this, are likely to sign River Plate’s next-one-of-the-productionline in Julian Alvarez. They’re not rushing though, they don’t need to. And, finally, Phil Jones seem to have found someone willing to give him a game - Bordeaux in France are discussing a deal to end a decade’s worth of service at Old Trafford. How much of the above will have actually happened come Tuesday morning? As you should know by now, your guess is certainly going to be as informed as mine.
