A quiet night for the three kings O
n Friday, 5th January the traditional three kings procession took place in Torrevieja. This is the evening when the magi deliver their presents to the children in the town. As usual, children lined the streets holding their plastic bags ready for the sweets that the kings and their entourage traditionally hand out.
This used to be considered a more dangerous affair with the hard boiled sweets thrown into the crowd. However, now most of the sweets are passed to those waiting which is good for those at the front by the barrier but less successful for those waiting a couple of people behind. The procession began with some dance troupes dancing to Indian music and braving the cold (although not too cold) of the January evening. Further back they were followed by the three kings and their entourage who brought with them numerous bags of sweets to hand out. Continued on page 3

Face lift for ‘La Paz’ One of the tallest and most emblematic buildings in Torrevieja is currently having a face lift.‘La Paz’is located between the Paseo de Las Rocas and the sea. It has 14 floors and has stood tall on Torrevieja’s sea front since the 1960s. It represents the residential tourist industry of Torrevieja with its top apartments being for sale during 1967 and 1968 for 435,000 pesetas, about €2,620. The apartments were built at a time when Torrevieja was becoming the place to be for many people who lived inland. With its milder climate and range of fiestas and annual activities, it was considered a good place to have a holiday home. Similar building took place in other parts of the town too with La Gaviota and El Blin (playa Acequión). It was then in the 1980s that building restrictions meant that only six floors could be built a move that prevented Torrevieja from becoming an alternative Benidorm. Now scaffolding covers the front of the building as a company who specialises in renovations has begun its work.
There were a couple of more unusual floats includ-ing one with a sabre toothed tiger and a very tall fairy who was pushed along. Perhaps most interesting for the children were the circus performers which included a man on stilts, a juggler and a hoop thrower. The youngest children enjoyed the life size characters from different cartoons. It could be said that there was something for everyone but you could have easily missed it. It is noticeable over the years that the procession seems to be much shorter than before and perhaps because of this those turning out to see it seem to have dwindled. The streets and restaurants following the procession were

evidently much quieter than they have been in previous years. The fact that there was no fair in the port area could have contributed to this too. The reduced crowds could also have been the result of the intense parking problems there are now that the port car park is no longer available to use. Torrevieja has always struggled on nights like this to accommodate its visitors. However, with the main car park out of use cars are pushed even further onto the outskirts of the town. For some, these factors appear to indicate that the three kings parade has dropped off the calendar of must-see events. Suzanne O’Connell

Disastrous New Year’s Eve for party goers

A local nightclub left many people out in the cold on New Year’s Eve. People had bought their tickets of €30 online and turned up outside the club ready to continue their celebrations. Many queued and waited patiently to get in, only to find that once they arrived at the door they were refused entry. It is claimed that the club had continued to allow people in earlier in the evening without taking
account of those who had bought online and many turned up at the door at a later point. The result was the club reached over capacity and started to turn people away. Even those who thought they had secured their entrance by booking online. The result was confusion and anger. A number of people demanded the hojas de reclamaciones but this wasn’t provided and at last the Guardia Civil were called to the venue. The managers of the club claim that they did not
exceed agreed capacity but acknowledge that there were around 100 people with tickets who were not able to enter the club. They claim that they had provided greater capacity through opening up a garden area outside where an additional 1,100 people could congregate. This is in addition to the 2,500 which they claim they are permitted inside. Managers comment that the problem resulted from the fact that everyone wanted to crowd into the enclosed room where the famous DJ was performing and so access to this room had to be restricted. They claim that 12 hojas de reclamaciones were filled in but the club didn’t have any more to supply people with. They say that they returned money to 50 people on the night and since then 50 more have received their money back. Particularly aggrieved were those who had already entered the club, left their coats and jackets there whilst going outside to then find they were refused admittance on their return. These people will not be able to reclaim their money either as the managers say there is no way of checking. However, those who had tickets for drinks that weren’t claimed can be reimbursed for these. The fiasco has outraged young people and resulted in an outpouring of comments on social media sites. The organisation ‘Contigo Torrevieja’ is asking the local government to check up on the legality of some of the nightclubs and other establishments which catered for party goers on New Year’s Eve. It is claimed that some of these were operating way beyond capacity and as such were putting people’s lives at risk. Contigo Torrevieja have asked that checks are maintained on those opening as late night and early morning venues. Suzanne O’Connell

the poverty and disadvantage experienced by many communities in Africa. The associations have collected work over a number of years. The images show the associations’ constant struggle for equality and assistance for the victims of civil wars and people living in poverty, particularly women and children. It also shows the motivation for these associations to continue in their charitable work, with the smiling faces of those they help. Councillor Morate invites everyone visiting or living in Torrevieja to come along and take a look. The exhibition runs from 10th January to the 11th February in the exhibition room of the Centro Virgen del Carmen.
Life insurance for town hall workers The insurance company which Torrevieja uses to cover the life insurance of town hall staff has announced that it doesn’t want to renew its contract. The company claims that they have paid out more than €300,000 in compensation for disability and death and that the contract isn’t profitable for them. The cover will end on March 31st 2018 and then it will be up to the town hall to find a new policy and company willing to insure them. Town hall staff currently consist of 700 workers, including officials. All of them are covered by the policy which is paid by the town council. The council now hopes to join the Central de Contratación de la Federación Española de Municipios y Provincias (FEMP). Joining FEMP will mean that the government team must ensure that all legalities to do with appointing and contracting staff must be adhered to.
Serious traffic accident in Torrevieja On Saturday 6th January at around 7.30am a taxi and another vehicle collided where calle Zoa meets calle Antonio Machado. The impact was so great that the taxi landed on its side and several of its occupants were injured. The Local Police, Guardia Civil, ambulance and a fire engine were soon on the scene. Those injured were taken to Torrevieja hospital. The injured were kept in hospital Continued on page 6
From the spring Torrevieja is to continue to build its reputation as a holiday destination for those interested in fishing. These tourists who want to know more about the Torrevieja fishing trade will be able to take part in boat trips, visit the factories and the fish market. It might not seem a great attraction for many but the council and the fisherman’s guild are behind this new project. The firm interested in offering the fishing ‘tour’ will include the fish market, how fishermen live, how the nets are prepared and what happens at sea as part of the agenda. The fisherman’s guild in the town is working with the business who will offer the
for fishing boats to adapt to enable them to take tourists out to sea too. It means in Torrevieja that the tourists will be able to either join a fishing boat to see what it’s like on a working day or spend the day on another boat from which they can watch the process. There will be no financial benefit for the fishermen. Their prime reason for joining the project is to raise the profile of and promote the consumption of Mediterranean fish. However, there will be assistance in helping interested fleets adapt their boats to accommodate tourists. One of the additional places that the tourists will visit is the fish market. This is
tours to make the most out of the interest that there is in the traditional trade of fishing. The tourists will be told about the different types of fish that they catch, the different types of boats that they use and general information about the fish in the area. This new tourist attraction is being made possible by changes in the law which allow
where the catch is unloaded and where an auction takes place to adjust the price of the fish. As this will be part of the tour, there will be a facelift for the market which is much needed. The cold storage area is currently being renovated with finance from the European Union. Suzanne O’Connell

First snow of 2018 for Alicante province The first snow of the New Year fell in the Alicante province this weekend. Foia de Castalla, el Alto and Medio Vinalopó were covered in a fine layer of white powder at dawn on Sunday after temperatures plummeted at the end of a storm which hit much of the province on Saturday. Scattered showers brought the temperatures down but not before many higher areas of the province were hit by severe hail storms. The snowfall in the early hours of Sunday morning was not significant but can be
recorded as the first snow of 2018 in any case. The snow fell mostly in mountainous areas near Niar, Onil and Petrer as well as the sierra l'Algaiat, in La Romana. AVAMET (The Valencian Association of Meteorology) reported that rainfall was not heavy, just two litres per square metre, but was enough for snow to be seen. Frost was not particularly intense either but Saturday night seemed to be the coldest. Minimum temperatures in Elche were 3.5, Alcoy 2.3, Villena -0.6 and only in Pinoso did temperatures drop below minus one.

Third warmest The council December publish their since 1941 The month of December has been the third warmest since 1941 in the Province of Alicante, it’s been announced by the Agencia Estatal de Meterología. The other two very warm years being 2014 and 2015. Now, into January, people are on the beaches and sitting on the terraces as the temperatures have reached 23 degrees in Torrevieja and Orihuela. There is something of a contrast with last year’s 18th January which saw the very same beaches covered in snow. The meteorologist, Pedro José Cascales explains that this phenomenon is the result of a westerly wind which brought with it dry conditions after crossing the Iberian Peninsula. The good weather was not set to last long into January, however. Over the past few days the promised colder front has brought with it a drop in temperatures. In the meantime, those lucky enough to have chosen December for their vacation have enjoyed the unusually mild temperatures. Suzanne O’Connell
CAR BREAK-INS FINANCED NEW MOBILE PHONE A thief in Guardamar del Segura broke into at least nine cars in the vicinity and used false documentation to buy a top of the range mobile phone worth €800. Guardia Civil reported this week that the thief broke into a number of cars and stole items, some of which he may then have sold on the black market for cash. Officers reported that the man was very adept at breaking into cars and the court, at the request of the Public Prosecutor has remanded the man in custody in prison.
Guardia Civil reported that the man seemed to have little fear of being caught in the act, saying in a statement that “the robberies were committed at noon, breaking the windows of the vehicles and removing objects from the interior.” Not only did the thief steal items to sell, but he also stole documentation from one vehicle which he used fraudulently to sign up for a mobile phone contract. Using the victim’s data, he was able to acquire a top of the range handset worth around €800.
The suspect is a 41 year old man whose arrest came after a car owner happened upon him during a break in. The man fled the scene but the description given to officers was enough to identify him. Once located and arrested by officers, a search warrant was obtained for the suspect’s home where police seized various objects stolen in the robberies as well as tools the man is believed to have used to break in to cars.

The four party council of Torrevieja has recorded month by month, some of the events of 2017. The magazine includes information about the fiestas, cultural events, sport and January’s snow but it is also an opportunity for them to outline their concerns and financial and political problems from the previous year. As you might expect there is scant reference to the PP party other than to the difficulties that the council has had in making ends meet following what they consider to be previous poor financial management. The criticism isn’t just targeted at town council politics. The provincial government of Alicante is also criticised. Since the last elections there have been tensions between the different political leanings of the local council, the provincial government in Alicante and the regional government in Valencia. These have sometimes led to different governments working against each other rather than for the people of the area. The publication includes 41 pages in full colour. It is organised by month and includes space for associations and local sports clubs. Local councillors have also had opportunity to use its pages to express their opinions. There is only one photo of the opposition. This photo is taken at the moment when the budget is agreed and all political parties, except for the PP, have raised their hands in approval. There are other successes that are noted too. These include in July the push for the N332 to be widened. Suzanne O’Connell

Torrevieja builders invest in Benidorm The TM group of builders are intending to build 1,200 homes in Benidorm, the first of which will be available for purchase in 2020. The TM group have their central offices in Torrevieja and the new site is the last one available next to the beach in Benidorm. It will mean that TM will become one of the main construction companies in the city and represents the largest investment in land of this company in its 49 year history. Building will take place over the next ten years and is expected to guarantee a total of 800 jobs. Alongside the expected 1,200 homes there will be 15,000 square meters of land for public use and about 2,700 square meters for commercial use. One of the attractions of building in this location is that there is currently no height restriction on what can be built there. However, the construction company must ensure that 50% of the area is dedicated to green areas and gardens. It is expected that the new development will attract both national and international purchasers. The international market will consist largely of Russian, Ukrainian, Swedish and Polish customers. Thousands trapped on AP-6 motorway Emergency services and the army worked throughout Saturday night and into Sunday morning to rescue thousands of people trapped on roads in the centre of the country after heavy snowfall forced drivers to spend the night in their cars, some trapped for as many as 18 hours inside vehicles in freezing temperatures. Hundreds of cars, vans and trucks were caught in the snow on the AP-6 motorway in north-western parts of the Madrid region and Castilla y Leon as people made the journey home from Epiphany celebrations which took place on the night of January 5th and on Saturday 6th January. Around 70 km of motorway between Madrid and nearby Segovia were affected, with some motorists trapped for up to 18 hours. More than 150 members of the army’s military emergencies unit (UME) were deployed during the early hours of Sunday to help Guardia Civil officers reach stranded motorists. “There are a lot of vehicles trapped on the AP-6 but we’re working bit by bit and kilometre by kilometre to get to all of them as soon as possible,” the UME tweeted. By mid-morning on Sunday, conditions had improved, making it easier for snowploughs and emergency workers to reach stranded drivers. Members of the Red Cross handed out hot drinks, blankets and high-energy food. The UME said that everyone had been rescued by lunchtime on Sunday and the road was due to be reopened by late afternoon. Many motorists caught up on the chaos condemned the lack of information available. One driver told the Spanish press by phone from his stationary car “We don’t have any
information, not by radio or by internet. We haven’t seen a snow plough for hours. We don’t know what is happening.” Opposition MPs were quick to call on the Minister For Infrastructure, Íñigo de la Serna, to appear in parliament to explain how the situation came about. De la Serna has promised an investigation and said questions will be asked of the company tasked with running the motorway. Meanwhile, Director General of the DGT Traffic Authority, Gregorio Serrano has said that the DGT is not to blame for the chaos on the motorway this weekend. Serrano said, “The management of the AP-6 is the responsibility of the company Abertis and they are the ones who must offer an explanation.” Serrano said that there were a number of factors contributing to the chaos – the weather, the large movement of people after the Epiphany celebrations and the fact that – despite warnings from the DGT – many motorists chose to travel without snow chains or winter tyres. Also reacting to the criticism for lack of information, Serrano said that the DGT began issuing warnings about the impending snowfall on Thursday. Around 4000 warning messages were displayed on information panels, urging motorists to plan their journey and to avoid certain roads. Serrano also said there were 500 radio bulletins broadcast with the same message. Many drivers making the journey specifically chose the AP-6, assuming that a toll section of the motorway would be better maintained and clearer of snow than a secondary road. Others criticized the staff of toll booths for taking the toll payment and not warning of the chaos up ahead.

HELP Vega Baja Christmas Appeal Success HELP Vega Baja is delighted with the success of its Christmas Appeal to provide something a little special for families struggling at Christmas. The charity asked for contributions of non-perishable food for families who are finding it hard to make ends meet and gifts for the local elderly who may be alone. A variety of local businesses volunteered to act as drop-off points where the items could be delivered. ‘We launched this, our first Christmas Appeal in early December,’ said Michele Masson, President of the charity, ‘and we’ve been overjoyed at the fantastic response we’ve received. Local businesses and individuals have been truly amazing with their generosity. We would like to thank everyone who has supported the appeal and to say that their kindness has made a huge difference to so many people.’ Michele’s car was filled several times over with the generous donations of gifts and food items and Cruz Roja and the social service department has helped them to ensure that the gifts have reached the people most in need. Thanks go to the businesses acting as drop-off points including: Hamiltons Bake House (Benijofar), Witherspoons (Villa Martin), Wella Hair by Samantha (Chicas Bonitas, Algorfa), Casaverde (Rojales/ Guardamar/ Almoradi), Fonefix (San Luis) and Roger Taylor Garage (Montesinos). The HELP Vega Baja Committee would like to thank everyone who has supported the charity throughout 2017 and looks forwarding to providing advice and support to those who need it in 2018. criticise their resources Employees of the refuse collection service in Torrevieja have complained about the state of some of the skips and other containers that they are using. They claim that they are old and rusted away and that this presents as a danger when they are being emptied. Some of these units contain garden waste of up to 1,000 kilos. The containers are lifted up in order to deposit their contents into lorries. There are concerns that their poor state could lead to them breaking up and causing accident and injury. So concerned are the workers that they have officially denounced a number of the containers which are distributed in urbanisations. Altogether there are 60 skips spread across the city. They are intended for green waste and it is claimed that at least half of them are in a bad condition. So far, there has been little response
from the works’ committee. Although there is a repair service that attends to the faults that are reported, workers claim that this is insufficient. Acciona is the firm responsible for the refuse service in Torrevieja. It is claimed that their most recent contract expired in June 2016 and has not been officially reissued since. Waste disposal has always been a controversial part of the budget being responsible for 13 million euros of spending every year. Acciona are not only in charge of the removal of waste but the cleaning of beaches and the streets and the removal of household waste to landfill sites. Workers are also unhappy with the state of the accommodation where they are based. They claim that the showers and toilets are poor and that there are a number of other deficiencies which amount to poor working conditions. Suzanne O’Connell

Metrovacesa planning IPO Spanish property group Metrovacesa may be planning an IPO, it was revealed this week. One of the victims of the global financial crisis, Metrovacesa is planning a return to the stock market to take advantage of growing investor confidence in the country’s property market. With a net asset value of €2.6bn, according to company figures, the listing is likely to be the largest by a European residential property developer. The news comes as house prices in Spain have started to rise again and the GDP expected to rise 2.6 per cent in 2018. Metrovacesa is one of the investors behind the construction of a new development of skyscrapers in Torrevieja. The 93 metre high, 29 story skyscrapers will include a hotel and apartments.
A very special three kings day On 6th January when children across Spain were opening their gifts from the three kings, nine children from San José Obrero orphanage in Orihuela were treated to their own special party at Carmens Bar in El Chaparral. The idea was the brainchild of Julie and Phil and is part of the continued support that they have been providing for the orphanage. The nine children, from 16 years to 8 years old, were those who did not have a family to go to on this special Christmas family day in Spain. Although the orphanage caters for around 70 children altogether, ranging from 6 to 18 years, most of them were able to spend the day with a family. However, nine children remained with nowhere to go to and so were invited to their very own Kings’ party. It must have been quite a surprise for them. Brought to Bar Carmens in two minibuses, they were treated to a lavish spread which was provided by the bar with the help of a €100 donation towards the food and drink. There was plenty for them to choose from and they seemed as keen as anyone to join in and get up and dance to the music that was entertaining the other customers on the day. Speaking to one of their representatives it was clear that these are children and young people who have had quite a struggle in their lives already. Jonathan has been in the
orphanage since he was 6 years old. Now he is 16 and the orphanage is preparing him for the world of work. Sat at the head of the table he was thoroughly enjoying the food on offer. Close by was another 16 year old, but this time with a mental age of a much younger person. The orphanage must cater for a range of young people.
Some of the children are at the home because their parents have died. Others were abused as children and have been removed from their parents’ care. The reasons are varied but many cases are harrowing. ‘They need to feel they are part of a family,’ explains their representative. ‘It’s psychologically very difficult for them. We’re there to listen.’ It was perhaps a little difficult to listen on 6th January but the music provided a lively backdrop to the occasion. There is no doubt that those children, young people and their carers will remember this day for some time to come. Suzanne O’Connell

Double delight for music lovers The annual musical extravaganzas mounted by leading local popular chorus Melody Makers International continue on Saturday 27th January at the Orihuela Costa Resort Hotel at La Zenia. This year, however, audiences are in for a ‘DoubleDelight’ for as well as Melody Makers International there will be the 30 strong Orihuela Costa Male Voice Choir sharing the stage ... with a total of nearly 80 singers entertaining during the two shows at 2pm and at 8pm. The shows are entitled ‘A Choral Spectacular’ and that is exactly what is promised by conductor Nigel Hopkins. As well as each choir performing individually, they will come together on four occasions bringing their vocal power to such numbers as the Battle Hymn of the Republic, and the Easter Hymn from Cavelleria Rusticana, amongst other surprises. Considering the programme will include such popular numbers as Bohemian Rhapsody, Fix You, We Will Rock You and more ... plus the men performing rousing numbers culminating in Nessun Dorma ... the programme can most definitely be described as both diverse and spectacular.
Soloists include the impressive Verity Hall; also the fabulous talent of Rebecca Holt - surely the most popular all-round entertainer on the Costas. Graham Cooke and Bill Nicholson will hold up the male end of the talented soloists - and a great time is promised to our audiences. Our comedy duet team will be well represented as ever. The concerts will this year be supporting the most worthwhile children’s charity, DEBRA - the Butterfly Children, and tickets are available from La Ponderosa Gift Shop at La Zenia, also from the CardPlace shops at both Punta Prima and Benimar. The charity shops of Debra at Urb. La Marina, San Fulgencio and Pueblo Bravo, Rojales also have tickets.

Award for local hospital Christmas tree Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja has been recognized as best hospital in the Alicante province and best private hospital in the Valencian Community. competition winners Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja has been recognized as the best hospital within the public and private network of the Valencian Community, according to the Index of Hospital Excellence from the Coordenadas Institute; which places
the University Hospital Jiménez Díaz Foundation, from the Quirónsalud group, as the best Hospital in Spain. The Index analyses public and private hospitals and measures the level of excellence based on findings and
insights of 1,750 professionals who work in the centres or for the centres. The results transcend the total number of services each centre offers and focus on the quality and assessment of each one. Hospital excellence takes into account the sum of healthcare quality, hospital service, patient well-being and satisfaction, innovation, personalized attention, and resource efficiency. In the words of the executive vicepresident from the Coordenadas Institute and director of the IEH project 2017, Jesús Sánchez Lambas, “Spain as a whole has a nationally and internationally recognized network of hospitals and healthcare professionals. When taking a look at each autonomous community the Index of Hospital Excellence is looking to recognize for a further year, the excellence, healthcare quality, service, and innovationthat guides hospitals in each region”. This recognition consolidates Quirónsalud not only as the biggest private healthcare group, but also the one with the highest quality in Spain, by obtaining the consideration of "excellent". A spokesperson for Quirónsalud hospitals told the Costa Blanca People, “We are grateful for this award, it is a new stimulus to continue improving the treatment that our professionals give our patients and continue our concept of person to person healthcare.”
They may not look exactly like Christmas trees but the decorative attempts of the competition entrants are definitely worth taking a second look at. This annual event begins in November and the unusual ‘trees’ are displayed outside the Municipal Theatre in the Plaza de Miguel Hernández and the Plaza de Oriente. This year the first prize went to Judith Maciá and the second to Teresa Mateo. The third was awarded to Deseada Maciá. The jury consisted of the councillor for commerce, Manuela Osuna, a technician from the town hall, Carmen García and Carmen Samper, a member of the education department. In addition to the official judges recommendations, people were encouraged to ‘like’ on Facebook too. The first prize was €600, the second €400 and third prize €150. The competition was open to young people over the age of 16 and altogether there were 12 trees available to paint. They were allowed to participate as individuals, as a couple or in a group of three. Participants could claim the cost of the materials they used of up to €70. The finished tree had to be weather resistant and presented for judging between the 27th and 30th November.

3 This year unfortunately, some of the trees had been damaged by vandals. However, this did not prevent the competition from taking place. An innovative way to encourage young design whilst also decorating the town. Suzanne O’Connell

‘La Ballena’ is coming down At last, at the end of March, we can expect the building known as ‘La Ballena’ to finally be demolished. The demolition company given the contract began a month ago and parts of the interior are already disappearing. However, three months work remains and it is expected that the demolition will be complete by Easter. The five-storey building was declared a ruin almost 12 years ago and the people living there were evicted in May 2006. The abandoned building has been a source of concern since then as it has attracted infestations of insects and rodents and finally it’s the town hall that has had to take responsibility for ensuring that this building is demolished. The demolition must take a while because of its central position. Located in the heart of the town it has to be slowly taken apart to avoid a structural collapse and damage to surrounding buildings. This includes the manual demolition of
the interior of the building. The contract was given to a firm from Navarra who are specialists in demolition and it will cost €230,000 to complete. There was a further delay when the initial company chosen to carry out the job didn’t have the needed financial security and it was the second bidder who eventually took the contract. Arranging for its demolition has taken a total of two years. The job includes some unusual elements, including the rehoming of a colony of cats and the removal of quantities of rubbish that had accumulated there. The town hall intends to collect the cost of the demolition from the 29 owners of the building, including a number of banks. Whoever pays, it will be a relief to many once this building is removed from the skyline. Suzanne O’Connell

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Send your letters to office@costablancapeople.com Dear Editor With reference to the article in the 19th to 25th edition, regarding Driving restrictions for pensioners, surely this is blatant discrimination and ageism. Is there some move to remove pensioners from the roads altogether? I recently attempted to buy a new car and was told that being over 75, I cannot get finance. I won’t go into the usual arguments about how much better senior members of the community drive than others, but will state that after passing the driving test, I was then taught how to drive properly by a police force and later approved by a further 3 forces. I manage to pass the Spanish requirements every 3 years. Whilst there will be many seniors who are less than competent, there are equally many less aged drivers who are totally clueless about how to handle a vehicle and/or situation on the roads. As far as finance is concerned, fortunately, I have more in pensions than many unfortunate people still working, but somehow my money is not as good as theirs. Although paying tax in both Spain and the UK, I am not allowed a vote in national elections in either country. Maybe you could pass this to somebody who has the knowledge, power and interest to do something about these injustices. Alex Walker San Miguel de Salinas

Police discover they are being ‘tracked’ Local police in Pilar de la Horadada discovered that they are being tracked with GPS devices, secretly installed in their patrol cars. Officers reported that they found the devices by chance in two squad cars after seeing a delivery docket which aroused suspicions. Police unions have asked the Mayor of Pilar for an explanation, and for information on who has access to the data generated by the trackers. Officers described their reaction as ‘stunned’ when they discovered paperwork relating to installation of the devices, which of course led to them finding the devices themselves installed in the police vehicles. “We found out by a fluke,” one offer said, “We were not informed.” Officers criticized the Councillor for Security for not informing them of the modification to the vehicles and have condemned the underhand way in which they believe the GPS trackers were installed. None of the officers were aware of the existence, or the purpose, of the trackers since no monitoring screen for the devices was installed at police headquarters. Officers have informed their union representatives of their discovery. The union, in turn, has made a
complaint to the Mayor for not having informed officers of the placement of the devices and demanding an explanation of their purpose. A letter to the Mayor signed by unions on behalf of the 50 officers in Pilar de la Horadada condemned the “Climate of tension that the Councillor for Security is generating.” The letter accuses the Councillor of political game playing and manipulation. The letter also mentions the last meeting between both parties when it is said that all the police officers present stood up and left the meeting, saying they were “fed up with the constant jokes and lack of respect.” The letter continued by condemning the policy of “division, confusion, manipulation, lies and false promises". The letter concludes by stating that union representatives "have taken the decision to inform you [the Mayor], as the highest authority of the Police Force, so that you have knowledge of the current situation of distrust and tension that exists within the collective, so that, if you consider it appropriate, take the necessary measures to solve this situation.”

WEEKLY EURO UPDATE The pound started the year by putting its best foot forward, strengthening by an average of 0.6%, adding a third of a euro cent and nearly one US cent on the first day of trading in 2018. This occurred despite reports of a UK manufacturing PMI of 56.3 against expectations of 58. The IHS Markit report on UK manufacturing did strike a positive note – showing an increase in new business due to export sales and rates of expansion in the sector remaining comfortably above long-term trend rates. Later in the week, however, a shortfall by a much smaller margin on the construction PMI – 52.2 against a forecast of 52.5 – did contribute to putting the pound under pressure. Other factors had already contributed to gathering pressure on the pound during the week, and on Wednesday the pound declined by an average of 0.6%, thus losing all of the year’s early gains. The euro had a similar experience to the pound, with performance somewhat defying the implication of the stats. Strong manufacturing PMIs were recorded across Euroland, with Germany taking the top spot with a reading of 63.3. France managed 58.8 and Italy 57.4; the overland figure for Europe was 60.6 for December, unchanged from the previous month. Employment stats have also been released; Norwegian unemployment is steady at 4%, Germany met the 5.5% expectation and in Spain it went down by 62k in November. The US dollar may provide the key to understanding the sometimes counter-intuitive performance of both the pound and the euro.
The euro and the pound start the year in technically-interesting situations relative to the US dollar. Both find themselves in major support/resistance zones that could make the difference between a continuation of last year's trends and a reversal of those gains. Since the euro's inception the $1.16-$1.20 zone has proved difficult to cross. The euro is now at the top of that range and, apparently, finding it difficult to break higher. For sterling/dollar the equivalent barrier is $1.35: it provided support in 2001 and 2008 but failed after the Brexit referendum. Both the euro and the pound are now on the cusp, at $1.20 and $1.36. The level of political turmoil continuing in the Trump administration and the release of December's US Federal Open Market Committee meeting minutes this week are doing nothing to help the US dollar, and all eyes are on the controversial tax bill due to be passed this month. The week will conclude, however, with employment stats from the US; nonfarm payrolls are forecast to have risen by 190k. Across the rest of the world, Canada’s manufacturing PMI was a couple of ticks higher on the month at 54.7. Employment statistics for Canada are due later today; the forecast is a net increase of 1,000. The GDT price index put milk prices 2.2% higher than a fortnight ago after a3.9% drop, giving a brief boost to the New Zealand dollar. On contrast, the Australian dollar struggled to come back from poor trade balance figures and lost value towards the end of the week.

Few plants can compare to the Begonia for longlasting colour, reasonable drought tolerance, easy care, and memorable impact when used in mass plantings. With lots of variety, begonias are popular in flowerbeds, for hanging baskets, as container plants, and for indoor houseplants. That's one versatile plant!
B
ecause of their showy flowers of white, pink, red, orange or yellow colour, and often attractively marked leaves, many species and innumerable hybrids and cultivars are cultivated. The different groups of begonias have different cultural requirements, but most species come from tropical regions and therefore they and their hybrids require warm temperatures. Most are forest understory plants and require bright shade; few will tolerate full sun, especially in warmer climates. If you live in an extremely warm or dry location, you will want to plant your begonias where they will be shaded during the hottest part of the day. Begonias are per definition perennials and most begonias can be grown outdoors year-round in subtropical or tropical climates, but in temperate climates begonias are grown outdoors as annuals, or as house or greenhouse plants. Begonias are quite easy plants to grow. All begonias like rich, loose, well drained soil and a monthly feeding. Any balanced fertilizer will work nicely. The day that you plant your begonias, be sure to give them a thorough watering. But, after that, they will only need to be watered whenever they feel dry to the touch. Begonias do not like too much water so it is better to stay a bit on the dry side than risk overwatering them. Begonias are a very large group of plants, but the most common by far are the familiar tuberous begonias and begonias of the semperflorens group (or wax begonias):
Wax begonias Typically, wax begonias are used as bedding plants. Wax begonias come in a variety of flower and leaf colours. For the most part, wax begonias have flowers that are single or double-sided, and the flowers are generally smaller than those of the tuberous begonias. However, they can vary in size, with some newer hybrids having flowers that are up to three inches in diameter. The bronze-leafed varieties are generally more
tolerant of hot, sunny conditions, so keep this in mind when planting in bright sun areas. Once established, begonias are surprisingly drought tolerant, but be sure to keep new transplants well watered for the first month or so. Once the begonias start to bloom you are in for a real treat, because they will not stop blooming until cold weather sets in. If you live in a cold area, you may want to grow wax begonias in pots so
you can bring them in when it gets cold. They will thrive in pots as well. Just make sure that your pots have drainage holes so that even in a pot they have well-drained soil.
Tuberous begonias As you might expect, these are grown from tubers. Many begonias will grow and flower yearround, but tuberous begonias usually have a dormant period, during which the tubers can be stored in a cool and dry place. In the spring, plant your begonia tubers in the soil, hollow side upwards. The top should be just about level with the ground or dirt surface. After the first shoots emerge, you should give the plants a little water. You are likely to have flowers from early summer and into autumn, depending on where you are located. After blooming has finished for the season leave the foliage in place; don’t cut it off. The leaves will gather sunlight, create food through photosynthesis and strengthen the bulb for the future. Leaves and stalks may be removed when they yellow. Begonia tubers cannot remain in the soil over the winter in very cold climates. If you live in an area where your begonias aren’t winter hardy, dig the tubers before the first frost. Shake off any excess dirt and let them dry in a warm
spot for several days. Cut off any bad spots. Then, carefully pull the roots, stems and leaves off the tuber. Wrap each tuber in a brown paper bag or wrapper and put them in a cool, dry place for the winter. If you garden in a warm climate, you can leave the tubers in the ground all winter. Your begonias will rest for a few months before beginning the next growing cycle.
Propagation Most begonias are easily propagated by division or from stem cuttings. In addition, many can be propagated from leaf cuttings or even sections of leaves.
Insect and Disease There’s great news here! Your begonias should have few if any problems with insects or disease. Begonias are prized equally for their flower as well as their showy leaves. When they are not in bloom, which is infrequent once established, their attractive, waxy green or chocolate coloured leaves show themselves off wherever you have placed them. All varieties will grow compact, dense foliage, and grow about 6-9 inches tall. Begonias like attention. Remove dead flowers, leaves, and stems. Trim off long stems to help retain its compact shape. A little care will pay you back with lusher foliage and more blooms. Begonia flowers are edible (They have a citrusspicy taste), but you will get more mileage from the tuberous types because of their much larger flowers.. Marc Vijverberg

WELCOME TO KRAKOW with Vivalia Travel
Krakow is the second largest and one of the oldest cities in Poland. Situated on the Vistula River in the Lesser Poland region, the city dates back to the 7th century. Krakow, the unofficial cultural capital of Poland, was named the official European Capital of Culture for the year 2000 by the European Union. It is a major attraction for both local and international tourists, attracting seven million visitors a year. Major landmarks include the Main Market Square
with St. Mary's Basilica and the Sukiennice Cloth Hall, the Wawel Castle, the National Art Museum, the Zygmunt Bell at the Wawel Cathedral, and the medieval St Florian's Gate with the Barbican along the Royal Coronation Route. Kraków has 28 museums and public art galleries. Among them are the main branch of Poland's National Museum and the Czartoryski Museum, the latter featuring works by Leonardo da Vinci and Rembrandt. It is a city with a colourful past. It has charm, magic and an amazing story to tell. That’s why so many foreign tourists are lured to visit the most
beautiful landmarks in Krakow. And guess what, the list of interesting sites to see is unimaginably long so you should plan your stay for more than a week. There are several areas in Krakow worth visiting. The Old Town is only one of them and as we all know it’s a really popular tourist destination both in summer and winter. There is no such a person who didn’t stroll around the Rynek because it’s usually the starting point of each trip. On the Main Market Square tourists can enjoy a nice atmosphere and sit in old-fashioned restaurants and cafes. It can be an ideal form of aftersightseeing rest accompanied by street music and delicious cracovian food. The next point on holiday makers’ map is Kazimierz with Jewish quarter. In the past it was a separate town with its own rights. Founded by the King Kazimierz it was a centre of Jewish culture. Now there is the Jewish Festival organized every year and local authorities care about renovation of oldstyle tenements. So if we’ve already mentioned the Jews we should also recommend you a trip to Aushwitz and Birkenau. Unfortunately, it symbolizes tragic series of the Nazists terrors but it’s an important historic place which depicts human cruelty towards the Jews, Gypsies and Poles. There is also one more part of the city of Krakow which shouldn’t be missed. It’s the Wawel Hill together with the Royal Castle and the Cathedral.
This place is thought to be a heart and a patriotic symbol of the nation. There are many important people burried here together with worthy kings, princes and virtuous rulers. For those who prefer rather different type of holidays spent in clubs, discos and pubs we recommend a great deal of well known entertainment cetres. Most of the best stylish and frequently attended ones are located in the Old Town and in the Kazimierz District.According to statistics, in 2009 Krakow was visited by 7.3 million tourists including 2.1 million foreign travelers (over 30% of their grand total). The visitors spent over two-and-a-half billion in the city (without travel costs and pre-booked accommodations). Most foreign tourists came from Great Britain (over 25%), with German, French, Italian and American visitors closely following. The Krakow tour-guide from Lesser Poland Visitors Bureau indicated that not all statistics are recorded due to considerable number of those who come, staying in readily available private rooms paid by cash, especially from Eastern Europe. The main reasons for visiting the city are: its historical monuments, recreation as well as relatives and friends (in the third place), religion and business (next). There are 120 quality hotels in Krakow (usually about half full) offering 15,485 overnight accommodations.

I got drunk at a New Year’s Eve party and made a stupid pass at my friend’s husband. He laughed it off, but my friend has not taken it lightly. I have fancied my friend’s husband for years, and I think she’s always known it, but they are happily married. I saw my chance, even though I’d had a few drinks, but he rebuffed me in a light-hearted way, and made a joke out of it. My friend however did not see it that way, and now won’t speak to me. I still have feelings for her husband.
On Christmas Day my daughter wouldn’t join in with any of the family traditions, and kept asking me what time lunch was. I thought something was up when amazingly she offered to help with the washing up, and then promptly disappeared out the door to go and see her boyfriend. He wanted to see her on Christmas Day, but this was news to me. She knew what our plans were and she ruined them.
It’s possible your friend will come around in time, if you tell her it was a drunken moment. However, if you have feelings for her husband, she may have cottoned on to that and is taking it seriously. You tried and failed and you may have to live with losing your friend, although if I were her, I would have to consider whether it would be worth having you in her life if you still have the hots for her husband!
A situation like this always calls for communication. If you expect certain things from teenagers then you need to have a conversation with them ahead of time, because at that age they have a very different agenda to ours. Take her to task about it and don’t let things go unsaid, and hopefully next year will be different when she has matured a little. Wait it out. Children go through a selfish stage when you think you have lost them, but it’s all down to hormones raging. And may be invite her boyfriend next year? WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. Wendy from La Mata asks: Hi Aunty. II would like to transfer all of my documents and photos from my old PC computer before I retire it to the bin. How do I do this so that no one can get my personal information or photos etc. on my old tower Aunty Says: Hello Wendy. Transferring your photos & docs from one computer to the other is pretty easy but it will depend on how well organised your files and folders are, and how much stuff you have. You can buy a 64GB USB flash memory stick for under €20 and use this to copy/paste everything from one machine to the other. On your old computer, right click on a folder and from the menu that pops up choose ‘copy’ and then right click on the USB stick and choose ‘paste’. The USB stick should appear after plugging it in as a new drive in My Computer or File Manager. Once you have double checked that you have everything from your old computer the only way to be 100% safe is to destroy the old hard disk drive as it isn’t too difficult to retrieve data even after Windows has been reinstalled. Ray from Campoamor asks: Hi Aunty. What is the easy way to translate a webpage from Spanish to English? I seem to remember, once having an option of language near top of screen. I don't understand the screen options of Chrome and Firefox. I use Windows 10.
Aunty Says: Hello Ray. In Google Chrome you can easily add the little translate button that used to appear in the top right corner. Search for webstore in google and click on the Chrome Web Store link, if it comes up in Spanish then you can change the language using the cog icon top right. Type translate into the search box and choose the Google Translate extension and you should now see the small blue icon in the top right corner of Chrome. You can sometimes see a translate option of you right click on a blank area of the webpage you want to translate. Bernard via email asks: Dear Aunty, I am having major problems with my Dell tower PC as it randomly and at no particular time it will simply shut down and I
www.costablancapeople.com
have to restart it again with the on/off button. Can you help me in any way to solve the problem? Keep up the great work. Aunty says: Hell Bernard. Normally when a computer repeatedly and randomly shuts down it is caused by overheating or a hardware fault. Blowing any fluff from the air vents at the back and around the sides may allow cool air to flow which can often improve things. As your problem is random then maybe also check you don’t have a loose connection where the power is plugged in. Keep me posted. Well that’s all for this week, email me your problems to auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com and I will see what I can do.

easier life would be, if you relocated closer to the shops or a bus stop? 5. 2018 is set to be a busy year for you, so do you really have time to maintain all that space? Instead of dreaming about not having to keep the pool clean or cut back the mature olive tree you inherited when you bought the house years ago, sell it and buy something that’s more manageable! This will leave you
Been a tight squeeze in your property during Christmas? Or maybe you’ve started a new business venture from home? Check out these 5 reasons you’re ready to make the move in 2018. 1. Have you had family stay with you during the Christmas holidays, and found it difficult to accommodate everyone? Maybe it’s time to upgrade into a home with an extra bedroom or bathroom! If you don’t want to go through the hassle of extensions, making a move to a bigger home will instantly solve the tight fit and get you and your family ready for their next, more comfortable visit. 2. Gained an extra fur baby over Christmas? Although you may be up for a few walks a day, having a garden instead of just a balcony would be better suited for your pets. 3. If your New Years plan is to work from home, then you will be needing an additional room to set up as a home office. Battling between working from home and family life, will be much easier by having just one extra room! 4. As the years go by, you may be finding it a little more challenging to get around, and being closer to public transport or amenities would better suit you now. Can you imagine how
plenty of time to accomplish all of your New Years resolutions to look after yourself. Bigger doesn’t mean better, for everyone! Smaller, can mean more manageable! If you can see yourself getting frustrated with your current home, selling during the winter months is a great option, if you’re wanting to compete with fewer homes on the market! For more information and guidance on buying and selling, please contact us and we will send you our FREE e-book or log on to: www.homes4u.es/new-kindle-e-book to request the link. Think property? Two out of Three Kings shop online Figures emerged over the ‘Three Kings’ festivities that two out of three Spaniards buy their gifts online. A
survey carried out by Acierto.com revealed that the majority of those giving Three Kings gifts prefer to do their shopping online rather than in a high street store. Not only that, but many also admit to comparing prices online before embarking on a trip to the shopping centre. According to Acierto, 62% of users opted to buy online with young men most likely to buy gifts on the internet rather than in a physical shop. And while just under two thirds prefer to buy online, a whopping 93% of consumers
compare prices online before going shopping. After checking what is available online, two out of three consumers complete their purchase on the internet while the remainder go to the shop to buy the item. Acierto says that this buying behaviour is not surprising as over 17 million people in Spain shop online, placing Spain fourth in the EU for online transactions.
As for the device with which to shop, 56% of Spaniards use a mobile or tablet while 44% prefer to use a PC or laptop. Acierto also revealed that industry experts expect a 120% increase in online purchases over the next year. The reasons for buying online,
according to Spanish consumers, are the wide range of products as well as other advantages such as convenience, not having to leave home or the office, and above all, attractive pricing. Co founder of Acierto, Carlos Brüggemann pointed out that the internet allows us to carry out a calm and more thoughtful comparison, which is essential in any purchase process. By browsing online, we are removing much of the temptation to impulse buy and gather more information about suitability and price as we check different sites and product descriptions and reviews. The star of the show this Christmas and Three Kings, says Acierto, has been technology. Product offers on Black Friday and Cyber Monday – two big Christmas gift buying days – have had a big impact on technology gifting this year. Acierto’s findings indicate that 90% of Christmas gift buying takes place between November and December with only 10% of gifts being bought earlier in the year.

Positive outlook for Spanish property in 2018 2017 was a good year for Spain's residential property market. The market enjoyed steady growth with the Ministry of Development (Fomento) reporting a surge in housing sales since last October, giving a 16% rise on 2016 figures. Over 510,000 homes were sold from September 2016 to September 2017. 2017 was also a record-breaking year for Taylor Wimpey Espana. During the summer season, the leading Spanish housebuilder witnessed the largest growth of the last six years with a 13% increase in enquiries for Spanish holiday homes. The company, which has been building homes in Spain for 60 years, also reported growth in international buyers, delivering another year of growth in operating profit in 2017. British buyers splash out more on Spanish properties with a view to Brexit in 2019 Costa Blanca goes international with buyers from over 20 nationalities recorded to pre-Brexit vote levels. December 2017 saw the sixth consecutive month of growth in sales to British buyers for Taylor Wimpey España with the majority being made at the upper price point of €450,000 and beyond, a trend never seen before. "Whilst conscious of the potential implications of the wider macro-European economic environment, our latest figures confirm that Spain remains very much at the top of the list for British second home buyers. "Affluent British citizens are looking to place their money outside of the UK, in Spanish property, with view to Brexit in April 2019. Spain is deemed a safe heaven and we expect to continue to see greater number of purchasers at this higher price point,” said Pritchard.
Costa Blanca goes international Official figures show that Spain has once again seen record-breaking levels of tourism with 77.8 million
foreign nationals visiting between Jan - Nov 2017, up from 75.6 million for the whole of 2016 (Frontur). British tourists accounted for 18 million (23%) visitors for the 2017 period, a 7% increase on the same 11-months in 2016 followed by German and French tourists at 11.4 million and 10.7 million respectively. Perennial favourite, the Costa Blanca saw its popularity rise once again in 2017 not only with holidaymakers but also second home buyers from all over the world according to Taylor Wimpey España.
A 50% year-on-year rise in Costa Blanca sales was recorded by Taylor Wimpey España in November 2017 with more than 20 nationalities in total purchasing in the region through the housebuilder last year. Well regarded as offering a wide variety of quality homes at affordable prices, the Costa Blanca attracts those with a budget between €170,000 and €210,000. The historic fishing village of Torrevieja has become a hotspot for Russian buyers whilst Scandinavian buyers are registering their interest Elche.

Making a Million Pound Car

Valencia shifts kilometre-long wasteberg Valencia has spent €2 million on clearing a wipe-berg – the city’s own version of the UK’s fatbergs – from its drainage system and has launched a campaign urging residents not to put anything other than toilet paper down the lavatory. Recent reports in the Spanish media showed that a kilometre-long blockage had appeared in Valencia’s pipes, mostly made up of wet-wipes – the type used instead of toilet paper mainly, but also face-wipes and baby-wipes – plus other waste items that should not be flushed away, including cotton wool, cotton buds, dental floss, sanitary towels, tampons, and even condoms. It came at around the same time as Thames Water in London reported a fatberg the size of a Boeing 747 having been found in the drainage system under Whitechapel, weighing 140 tonnes and measuring 250 metres, costing around €1.15m to shift with workers on the job seven days a week for – so far – two months.
The expression fatberg, first coined in 2013 and added to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) in 2015, describes a huge, congealed deposit found in the pipes made up of similar items as those recently removed from Valencia’s waterworks, but also greasy and fatty matter such as used cooking oil and food fat, and even used nappies, tennis balls and chunks of wood. Fatbergs normally have to be shifted with cranes and are discovered when they start to cause problems – usually by the time they have reached the size of a bus. “All solid elements should be thrown in the bin, not the toilet, because it creates blockages,” was water councillor Vicent Sarrià’s understatement of the year on the subject. The Valencia wipe-berg, or fatberg, had built up in the sewage works at the north end of the city which channels 40 per cent of the waste matter from the whole of the metropolitan area to the
Pinedo treatment plant, and its removal – completed this week – involved over 900 tonnes of revolting matter being shifted. By the time it was discovered by drainage network company Acciona, the sewage collector was about to burst, with waste water on the point of flooding what used to be the Túria riverbed and what is now the botanical gardens surrounding the city centre. “It’s a growing problem, but as it cannot be seen, it goes unnoticed until something happens,” says Sarrià, who referred to the cost of removing it as brutal – nearly 20 per cent of unexpected extra expense on top of the city’s annual drain-clearing budget of €11m. “As Valencia is a flat city, the problem affects the pump network which carries waste water to the treatment plant and is in place because there are no hills to channel it downward,” the councillor reveals. Another fatberg build-up has been
detected in the sewage channel pipe, but will not be able to be removed until mid2018 when it can be funded by next year’s budget. Campaigns have been launched targeting apartment block freehold communities and also schools and the council has called for the central government to ensure manufacturers clearly label wet-wipes and similar products showing they should not be disposed of down the toilet. Part of the problem is that their users
often genuinely do not realise they should be placed in the bin and not the toilet. Valencia also wants the government to work with manufacturers on funding research into how wet-wipes can be made with biodegradable material. Most public toilets in bars, shops, restaurants and shopping centres carry warning signs requesting users do not throw wet-wipes or sanitaryware down the lavatory.

Best natural antidepressants Are there alternatives to prescription meds for depression and anxiety? Yes there are and we have found the best natural antidepressants to help you bring your happy back. When put some music on or go for a walk just don’t cut it as solutions when you’re in a ball on your bed unable to move from crippling depression or anxiety, actual medicine may seem like your only option. If you’ve been thinking about medicating but don’t want to rush into prescription meds just yet (perhaps you’ve heard that being on antidepressants isn’t a walk in the park), maybe you should try natural antidepressants instead. Just remember though, that you should always consult your doctor before trying any of the remedies in this article. Why choose a natural anti-depressant? So many people suffer from stress, depression or anxiety nowadays due to the pressures of modern day life. It’s more prevalent than ever before, making it a modern disease with almost half of all adults in the UK on anti-depressant pills of some type because they are unhappy or feel they cannot cope with aspects of their lives. Although prescription antidepressants have helped a lot of people with severe depression regain the ability to go about their normal lives, socialise and even smile again, they can also wreak havoc on your psyche. There are many side-effects you may have to deal with, especially in the initiation phase, not least of which are nausea, dizziness, weight gain (or loss) and insomnia.
Natural antidepressants are made from all natural ingredients hence no nasty side-effects (although people may experience different reactions), they aren’t addictive and you can get them at your local pharmacy, health store and even online. Below is a selection of the best natural antidepressants that are popularly taken to alleviate the blues. Omega 3 Omega-3 fatty acids are essential minerals which reduce inflammation and are vital to brain functions such as mood and memory. Your body doesn’t produce them naturally so you can only get them in you via food (like fish, nuts and seeds) or dietary supplements. Vitamin D In addition to bone health, Vitamin D can play a vital role in the areas of the brain that are linked to the development of depression and other mental health problems. A theory into how vitamin D affects depression is that it affects the amount of chemicals called monoamines, such as serotonin, and how they work in the brain (which is how many antidepressants work). S Adenosylemthionine SAMe is a molecule that the body naturally forms and is available as a dietary supplement. In addition to depression and anxiety, it can be used for many other conditions including heart disease, fibromyalgia, tendonitis and many more. It is also recommended for PMS. It works by
making sure that chemicals in the body that play a role in pain, depression, liver disease, and other conditions, actually do their job. 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) Like SAMe, 5-HTP is also a an essential amino acid, a chemical that the body makes naturally. It works by helping to raise the serotonin (the happy hormone) levels in the brain. 5-HTP has been known to have a positive effect on sleep, mood, anxiety, appetite and pain. Roseroot Herb A study conducted on whether the Rhodiola Rosea (Roseroot) herb was effective for depression showed that it was almost as effective as the popular antidepressant, Sertraline (Zoloft), but with fewer side effects. The herb boasts strengthening the nervous system, fighting depression, enhancing the immune system and memory, elevating stamina, aiding in weight-loss and increasing sexual function. Iron A lot of adults, especially women, suffer from iron deficiency, and guess what? Iron deficiency symptoms are pretty similar to depression symptoms, i.e. fatigue, irritability, and foggy brain. The recommended daily iron allowance in adults is roughly 8 to 18 mg daily (check with your doctor though because everyone’s number is different). Folate If you don’t have enough folate, even normal antidepressants may not work.
Oregano oil Oregano Oil is gaining popularity as an alternative medicine. This week we look at some of the ways in which it can be used. Oregano essential oil can act as an expectorant, which loosens up or helps to eliminate the uncomfortable build-ups of mucus and phlegm in the respiratory tracts and sinuses. This oil is good for soothing many types of inflammation, internal or external, caused by a variety of reasons. When it is applied topically, it can reduce redness and irritation to the applied area, can relieve pain associated with arthritis or injury. When consumed, it has much of the same effect, although it is spread throughout the body, so will not necessarily relieve pain and discomfort as quickly. Just as it protects you against viral infections, oregano oil protects you against bacterial infections as well. Also, the antibacterial effects of oregano don’t have an inhibitory effect on the health, so you don’t suffer from the ill effects of being undefended. Oregano essential oil provides protection against viral infections. This means that it strengthens your immunity against cold, mumps, measles, pox and other problems created by viruses. Many types of parasites, such as roundworms, tapeworms, lice, bed bugs, mosquitoes, and fleas live inside or outside the human body. Oregano essential oil, when ingested, can eliminate intestinal worms, and when it is applied externally, it effectively keeps away lice, bed bugs, mosquitoes, and fleas.
Some docs prescribe folate along with antidepressants to treat depression and improve the effectiveness the medication. Most adults need at least 0.4mg daily, which you can though food including dark leafy greens, beans and citrus fruit, or as a supplement. B12 Vitamin B-12 and other B vitamins can play a role in producing mood-affecting brain chemicals and low levels of these may be linked to depression. If you have a poor diet and the body cannot absorb enough B vits, your mood can be severely affected. Getting a blood test will determine how much of the B goodness you have in your system, and whether you need to stock up. B vitamins are found in animal products like milk, fish, meat and eggs, so if you are a vegan, you should definitely be getting your B’s from dietary supplements and vitamins. Zinc Zinc is crucial to our system as it activates our digestive enzymes breaking down food, and helps prevent food allergies, which can avert depression.
www.costablancapeople.com
It also helps our DNA to produce and repair proteins, control inflammation and boost our immune system. Tryptophan Tryptophan is an essential amino acid which you get through food such as bananas, tamarind, oats, sesame seeds, kiwi and watermelon. Once in the body, it converts to niacin, serotonin and melatonin. Most antidepressants work by increasing the amount of serotonin in the brain and Tryptophan helps to increase serotonin levels without the extreme side effects of meds. Continued on page 44

St John Wort St John’s Wort has been around for ages and is one of the most popular natural methods used for dealing with stress, anxiety and depression. It’s a plant with yellow flowers. There has been some scientific evidence that St. John’s Wort may be helpful in treating mild depression. It’s been claimed that it works just ike regular antidepressants in that it inhibits the reuptake of the neurotransmitters serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine.

Intelligent Road Signs
Throughout the second half of last year, a new wave of road signs began being installed across much of the main road network in Spain, all part of a multimillion euro investment scheme to make the roads safer. On the infamous N-332 around Torrevieja we saw illuminated signs offering more protection at roundabouts. Arrows which flash in the direction of movement and triangular signs that flash orange to warn us of the approaching hazard are just some of the signs that drivers have been getting used to. Intelligent signs were installed in one of the most problematic areas in terms of congestion, the single-line section as the N-332 passes Torrevieja, which both monitor the flow of traffic on the roads and then communicate with each other to warn approaching drivers of queues ahead. These sign groups have two units, one which is the detector, the other the receptor and warning sign. When traffic flows freely the signs look like nothing more than a black square. But, when traffic is detected, the square displays an electronic version of the triangular P-31
road sign, warning of congestion, with flashing orange lights to attract attention. These are not the only intelligent signs being installed on the network. In other areas of Spain a number of junctions have already had warning systems installed which tell drivers on the main carriageway that there is a vehicle at a junction ahead on a minor road likely to join or cross the flow of traffic. Sensors built into the road, similar to those used to monitor traffic flow, become aware of the presence of a vehicle at the junction. They are able to identify the size and type of vehicle, if needed, and then send the information to the warning sign located on the main carriageway, almost offering an extra set of eyes to the driver and the theoretical ability to see beyond bends and buildings ahead, thus reducing the surprise factor and, hopefully, reducing the risk. It is known under the name of “sistema de advertencia dinámica en intersecciones”, or “dynamic junction warning system”, which uses low-cost technology to exchange information between the vehicle, infrastructure and
back to the vehicle, and so commonly known as “V2V”, the aim being to warn of the proximity of vehicles at junctions. Jaime Moreno, deputy director of Mobility at the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT), explains that, “when the system detects the presence of a vehicle approaching the intersection, this situation activates the alert signal for vehicles traveling the main stem, with preference through the junction, so they can know well in advance this circumstance, adjusting their speed and taking extreme care”. So far, there are four locations in Spain where the system has been installed, chosen because of their high incident rate. Two of them, located in the provinces of Madrid and León, are also in locations known for their concentration of a high number of incidents. The locations are: Leon (in the N-VI, at kilometre 399); Madrid (also in the N-VI, pk 56); Navarra (N-113, pk 78) and A Coruña (N-634, pk 676). In these four locations, between 2012 and 2014, a total of 48 crashes occurred, resulting in the loss of 3 lives and injury to another 47 people.

Keeping Children Safe Meet Traffic Eye Using the correct and approved seat for a child reduces the risk of serious injury by 95%, as long as they are used correctly. All too often we witness children being carried on the laps of adults or without an appropriate seat, two of the most common and dangerous practices when it comes to transporting children. Children under 1.35 metres in height must sit in the rear seats, although there are a couple of exceptions, and they must be in a seat appropriate to their height and weight. It is advisable that children sit in rearfacing seats until they reach 3 or 4 years of age, as this significantly reduces the risk
of injury in the event of an impact. Countless crash test scenarios have been acted out in controlled conditions, all of which collectively prove that rearfacing in the earliest part of the child´s development significantly reduces risk. It is also important that the restraining systems are fitted and used correctly, as per the manufacturer’s instruction, with the child firmly secured in the seat and unable to release themselves from any of the straps. The MAPFRE foundation released a report in October which supports the conclusion of the test data, stating that “virtually all serious or fatal injuries are
preventable, and it is essential to improve the knowledge of parents about the use of SRI, as the lower band belt passes over the bones of the pelvis and not over the child's stomach; or the top of the belt passes over the middle of the sternum and collarbone, without being too close to the neck”. The report also makes it clear that the adults in vehicles have a responsibility to not only ensure that children are kept safe, but that their actions and attitudes to safety systems are impeccable, so as to educate children of their importance. Mark Nolan
As all technology advances, so does the manner that devices can be put to good use by helping others, and, in the case of some, saving lives. Meet Traffic Eye from Tradesegur, one of over 200 new devices already installed around the Spanish road network, having their big test switch on last year. The system first went live in June of last year, after an extensive test saw drivers warned if they were caught by the system, before fines were then automatically issued to the vehicle owner. TrafficEye and its cousin MultiRadar C, offer the most advanced technologies that are currently available for monitoring traffic, which not only check and report speeding motorists, but also other safety critical traffic violations such as not wearing a seatbelt, children and animals not properly restrained, using a mobile phone or electrical device whilst driving, and checking with the established databases to see if your vehicle is correctly
insured. Prior to these devices, only Pegasus equipped helicopters could monitor the roads so closely. Now, thanks to TrafficEye, the roads can be monitored around the clock because these devices also work at night. Although there are a number of drivers who see these devices as nothing more than a cash machine, they only actually check for violations, as already mentioned, which are safety critical. They don´t report on less serious offences, only those who are putting lives, sometimes their own and sometimes others, at risk. Of course for those drivers who are still not convinced and still believe that these devices are designed for making money, the simple solution for saving your cash is to drive responsibly and safely, but also remember that it could be your life that´s saved. Mark Nolan
Never Warn about Checkpoints Self drive cars in Throughout the Christmas and New Year period there was an inevitable increase in patrols on the roads checking drivers to ensure they are acting in a safe and legal manner, and with every increase in these checkpoints, there comes an increase in sharing of locations throughout social media. The practice of sharing locations of checkpoints is not only illegal and can lead to prosecution, there are also very moral reasons why this should never be done, as was featured in a recent video produced by French police. The message of “nothing to hide, nothing to fear” has never been clearer than in recent times, with both an increased threat in criminal and other
serious activities, protection of lawabiding citizens has perhaps never been as important. Let´s remember, that if you do have nothing to hide, if you are stopped at a checkpoint, the worst that will happen will be a slight delay whilst your documents and details are checked. More likely you will simply be waved on and able to go about your business. In the French video however, a very different story unfolds. A driver is seen driving through the night when he spots a police patrol. Thinking he is doing a good deed, he takes to flashing his headlights in warning to oncoming vehicles, a practice which is by the way illegal.
As the story continues we see another more nervous driver heeding the warning, stopping his vehicle and turning around to drive in the opposite direction. Unbeknown to the original driver, the police that he had spotted originally were involved in the search for a young girl who had been abducted. The driver he is later seen to warn is revealed to be the abductor, so close to approaching capture and the subsequent liberation of the girl, the warning meant that the kidnapper was able to evade capture, the result for the victim unknown, but without the warning of the driver the story would have ended so very differently, with a positive result. Mark Nolan

Hyundai is promising self-driving cars within three years after partnering with a US autonomous vehicle tech firm led by former executives from Google, Tesla and Uber. The world’s biggest carmaker, Volkswagen has also announced a partnership with the firm Aurora Innovation, which was started last year by ex-Google autonomous car chief Chris Urmson and others. VW says its collaboration will help bring self-driving cars quickly to roads worldwide, while autonomous Hyundais are expected to be in the market by 2021.
The partnerships are the latest in a string of tie-ups between traditional car companies and tech firms as they race to be first with self-driving vehicles. Volkswagen, which produces about 10 million vehicles annually, hopes the tieup will bring autonomous vehicle technology to all of its brands. Its stable includes Audi, Skoda, Seat, Porsche and Lamborghini. The company says it has been working
with Aurora for the past six months, integrating its sensors, hardware and software into VW vehicles. Hyundai says the partnership with Aurora will bring autonomous vehicles to market that can operate without human input in most conditions. The partnership has yet to say how its first batch of self-driving vehicles will be used, but analysts expect they will likely be for commercial use, such as selfdriving taxis or ride-hailing services, rather than for sales to individual consumers. General Motors said in November that its self-driving vehicles will carry passengers and deliver goods in big cities by 2019. The company plans to show off some of its autonomous driving cars during the Winter Olympics Game next month in Pyeongchang, South Korea. “We know the future of transportation is autonomous, and autonomous driving technology needs to be proven in the real-world to accelerate deployment in a safe and scalable manner,” says Dr Woong Chul Yang, Vice Chairman of Hyundai Motor. “Combining our advanced vehicle technology that embeds the latest safety features with Aurora’s leading suite of Level 4 autonomous technology will advance this revolution in mobility with Hyundai in a leadership position.”

tournament match. He is joined on the sick list by Njovak Djokevic and Rafa Nadal as Roger Federer goes into the competition as favourite purely as the last one standing. By the time you read this, the pain will be over. You won’t have to go through it any more. He made it, surprisingly, to the final but was beaten easily by Rob Cross. Someone else who will be considering his future, surely, is Sir Andy Murray who has withdrawn from next week’s Australian Open as his hip is still not up to getting through a
Finally, a 16-year-old jockey has won the Welsh Grand National. James Bowen, brilliantly, is only three years younger than the horse, Raz de Maree.
