St Patrick’s Day on the Coast Millions of people around the world joined forces with the Irish on
Saturday to celebrate St Patrick´s Day and here on the Costa Blanca it was no different with every Irish pub and bar hosting special events to mark the day of the Patron Saint of Ireland (not to
mention the final match of the six nations between Ireland and England). The focal point for the celebrations in Orihuela Costa was the official St Patrick´s Day Parade held at Cabo Roig strip where thousands gathered to watch the largest St Patrick’s Day Parade in mainland Europe. Cabo Roig has a strong connection to the Emerald Isle through its expat Irish community, which has been organising and hosting the parade for several years. Saturday saw the strip, a line of bars, clubs, cafes and restaurants that form a roadside promenade alongside the main N332 coast road transformed into a sea of green as every nationality became Irish for the day! The Grand Master of the Parade was none other than Brian Cowen, former
Taoiseach (that´s the Irish Prime Minister if you´re not a native). The involvement in the parade by the former Irish Prime Minister has been hailed as a major endorsement of the Orihuela Costa St Patrick’s Day celebrations. Mr Cowen served in office between 2008 and 2011, and he was accompanied by Martin Quinn, a former Fianna Fáil Continued on page 3

Neighbourhood Watch meeting planned The San Luis/ La Siesta neighbourhood watch would like to invite local people to attend their next meeting on Monday 26th March. The meeting will be held at Casa Ventura at 4.30pm. On the agenda will be the area improvement plan which the group has been working on for the past few weeks. There will be a final opportunity at the meeting for residents to make any further suggestions to the plan. Councillor Manzanares and Councillor Morate have been invited to attend to discuss the continuing issues for the area. Local residents are concerned about the general maintenance of the area including the dumping of builders’ waste, unclear road markings and the ongoing issue of La Siesta park. President, Doug Allen is keen for new and previous members of the NHW to come along to this multi-national meeting. Plans for the subsequent April meeting are already being made and include a presentation by the Guardia Civil.
Firemen rescue car driver A car and a lorry collided at 6am on 14th March on the N332. The car driver was injured in the accident and had to be taken to hospital. The crash was head on and happened in the single
politician and the Mayor of Galway from 2000 to 2001, and by former Irish cabinet minister Frank Fahey. They were joined by other local Irish and Spanish dignitaries, including founder members of the Parade Committee and local councillors including Sophia Alvarez. After the prerequisite late start, or should that be Spanish start, the event did not disappoint. As has become the tradition, the crowd was warmed by a lap or two from classic cars and custom motorbikes and trikes. The main parade was led by the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums, followed by the Grand Master and the VIP guests. Then came a medley of floats, bands, dancers, stilt walkers and

costumed characters representing local bars, businesses and associations. The parade was the biggest and the best since its inception and the crowd clapped, danced and sang along in the true spirit of participation – aided I shouldn’t wonder by a drop or two of the black stuff. There wasn’t a spot to stand, let alone a chair spare from one end of the strip to the other with many bars offering day and night-long live entertainment, along with traditional Irish tipples such as Guinness, Magners and Powers Gold mopped up by a bowl or two of Irish Stew or Colcannon. Monument to murdered teenager removed In 2004 13 year old Shila Bigdely was raped and murdered in Orihuela Costa by a classmate. The horrendous crime shook the community, as did the short sentence, just four years in a detention centre for Tobias, her young attacker who is now free. Shila Bigdely was a beautiful girl of 13 who was Norwegian by nationality, although mother came from Kuala Lumpur and her father from Iran. Shila and other teenagers used to take a short walk down the market road – Calle Nicolas de Bussi - to catch a bus to school. That day in 2004, Shila never made it. Her classmate, Tobias, raped and murdered her in a ravine. A friend of Shila's family found the body and the police caught the killer in a matter of days as there was indisputable DNA evidence. Following the tragic event the Town Hall built a park at the corner of the ravine and named it after Shila and placed a memorial cross in the park. It is still in use today, although the majority of local residents have no idea of its significance. The memorial, which bears the young girls picture, has maintained a silent vigil to Shila since that day, keeping her memory alive but not for much longer. According to Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Infrastructure, Juan Ignacio López-Bas, local residents have been calling for the removal of the memorial for years as they consider that the
memorial resembles a tombstone and is not appropriate for a children’s play area. For this reason he has ordered it to be torn down. In a statement issued to The Costa Blanca People from Playa Flamenca Town Hall says: “We have responded to the requests received in reference to the fact that this memorial was not the

However, we have tried to get in touch with the parents using the only contact information they had for them in Norway, but without success.” Mireille Toddington

carriageway section of the N332. The injured man is 35 years old and of Spanish nationality. He was trapped in the vehicle after the collision and had to be released by the fire brigade. Three emergency vehicles were in attendance. They were unable to release the man through the door due to the severity of the damage and the rescue took place through the roof of the car.The injured man was conscious but lost a lot of blood and the vehicle was a complete right off. We are still out of the main tourist season and accidents have already begun to happen on this dangerous stretch of road. Requests for improvements to the road through widening have been made over the past four years. The continued disputes as to the source of funding continue to make this a project destined for the distant future.
Black Panther in English If you would like to see the new Black Panther film with the original soundtrack, then you can. The film will be showing at Torrevieja’s cinema at 6pm in room 5. However, if you would like the chance to practise your Spanish then the film will also be showing in Spanish at 8.30pm and 11pm in room 8.
Sign up on the padrón! On March 15th a number of local councillors, mayors and administrators in local towns attended a meeting about the subject of padrón management. There is a particular concern that the number of people registered on the padrón has decreased in recent years. The conference was opened by Torrevieja’s mayor, José Manuel Dolón who announced that in Torrevieja the number registered has decreased from 107,000 in 2007 and 2008 to 84,686 in the current month. The day was aimed at improving the management of the padrón, which is the town’s local census of who lives here. ‘Town halls in the region are concerned,’ explained Councillor Fanny Serrano, ‘that the reduction in registered numbers means that we will attract less money from the state.’
Licences for street sellers reduced The number of street sellers on the Plaza de Encarnación Puchol and Paseo Vista Alegre is likely to be reduced this year. Of a maximum of 70 licences it has been announced that only 35 will be granted. There are concerns that the law surrounding the granting of licences for street sellers is not a fair way of allocating them with more ‘points’ given to Europeans than to Africans, for example. Also, the council is anxious not to see the streets saturated with the sellers. The result being that 15 places will be granted on the Paseo and 20 on the beach rather than the initial figures of 20 on the Paseo and 50 for the beach.

Could the King of Spain visit Torrevieja? It might seem an unlikely proposal but it could now be a possibility that King Felipe VI make a visit for the first time to the Vega Baja. The visit would be as a result of the invitation by Federación Nacional de Comunidades de Regantes de España to the closing of their congress to be held in the International Auditorium in Torrevieja. The King has also been invited following his appearance to Orihuela where the congressmen and guests are due to lunch at the Diocesan school of Santo Domingo at 2pm. There is no definite confirmation yet that the King will attend but the response from the royal house is looking promising. All his public engagements are kept under wraps until much closer to the event. It is expected that the event will be attended by 1,500 irrigators from all over the country and it will be opened by the president of the Valencian community, Ximo Puig. During the congress topics of discussion will be the future of water in
Spain, including proposing solutions to improve irrigation, particularly in relation to the severe drought in the south east of the country. The Congress is due to be held from May 14th to 18th. Suzanne O’Connell
Delays in building work The mayor of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón, explained at a press conference that the works planned to improve the Paseo Marítimo de Torrevieja must be delayed this year and will not be completed by the summer. The work is part of the provincial plan for improvements to the area (Plan de Obras y Servicios de la Diputación Provincial) going back to the year 2014. It is the stretch between Punta Margalla and Avenida de las Habaneras that will not be completed in time. ‘We are now in March,’ explained the mayor. ‘Although technical documentation was signed we cannot see how the work will be completed in time.’ It had been agreed last year that the work would be finished before summer 2018. If the work did begin now it would have to stop during the summer when this stretch is at its busiest. The town
council is due to pay 50% of the cost of the work with Alicante Province being responsible for the other 50%. Torrevieja town council is keen to establish that any delay is not down to them. Instead the local council blames Alicante Province for the project remaining on hold. Whereas the local council is made up of four different political parties, the provincial council is still PP controlled. This has caused some difficulties when it comes to the implementation of some events and activities. The project to improve the area was originally planned in 2014 and should have been completed in 2015. At this time there was no clash between the ruling political parties with both being governed by the PP. Suzanne O’Connell

THE FINAL COUNTDOWN!
Spain arrests 155 over Chinese human trafficking Spanish police have announced that they have arrested 155 mostly Chinese nationals after busting a gang that trafficked Chinese migrants into Britain and Ireland for 20,000 euros per person. The arrests, which included four alleged ringleaders detained in Barcelona, came after a three-year investigation, police said in a statement. "The dismantled network was extremely hermetic, structured and hierarchical," they said.
Officials launched the probe after Barcelona airport staff noticed a significant rise in fake identity papers used by Chinese nationals headed for Britain. "Each victim paid 20,000 euros for the trip and once they had arrived in the European Schengen zone, they would temporarily stay in flats in different parts of the northeastern region of Catalonia until they got their fake papers made in China”, police said.
As the song goes, it’s the final countdown. The Tasha Appeal has been running for many months and took on great momentum with the involvement of Stevie Spit and the Community Care Association. Tasha, a young British girl living in La Marina, has a combination of incredibly rare and life threatening conditions. Her only hope is to travel to the US for a specially tailored mitochondrial treatment. To this end, the expat community has been furiously fundraising to get Tasha to America for this lifesaving treatment. Meanwhile, Tasha herself has been in and out of hospital recently and is becoming weaker and weaker as the medical team struggles to manage her pain. Her hips dislocate on a daily basis and an operation intended to fix this (carried out with no anaesthetic as Tasha’s system cannot cope) failed as the hip dislocated itself again just as surgeons were attempting to operate. Andy, Tasha’s father told us, “The situation has always been desperate but now, more than ever, I need to get my daughter to America. It cannot go on like this – the latest blow is that she has lost her thyroid. As well as now being in a constant state of severe, untreatable pain, this is a big blow. It is my hope that we can get to the US, get her started on the mitochondrial treatment and hopefully, her condition will improve and she can have some quality of life.” COMING UP To get Tasha to the US, local individuals and fundraisers have been working hard but we’re not quite there yet. There is another €25,000 to find and with this in mind, there are a number of events
planned for the next few weeks to give the Tasha Appeal a much needed cash injection. On 28th March, there is a Big FM outside broadcast with Dean Alexander at Studz in Benimar. The 30th of March sees Stevie Spit’s much anticipated Variety Show (See advert on page 51) which brings together the very best of the
Costa Blanca’s tribute acts in one never before seen show. Tickets are just €15 for normal seating or €25 for VIP. This is the first (and possibly only) time all of these acts have performed in one venue on the same night, so the ticket price is incredible value. On April 2nd , there is a fundraiser at the Emerald Isle with Stevie Spit as Compere for the day. The event features a visit from the legendary Eddie Wallace and appearances from Texas Ted, David John Williams, Rebecca Holt, Kevin
Tyler, Gemma, Dan Davy, Lucinda, Kylie Burgazzi, Maria O'Hara and Abba Elite. Music and entertainment from 12 midday with games, raffles, tombola and face painting. Finally on 14th April , there is a live show in Zenia Boulevard shopping centre, featuring Stevie Spit and friends. There is also a wonderful opportunity to win a 7 night cruise! Tickets are being sold by fundraisers and at all events in the run up to the Variety Night on 30th March in the Orihuela Costa Resort. Priced at just €5 per ticket, the draw will take place live at the Variety Night itself. Members of the public are being asked to support any of these forthcoming events by attending and if you can, many groups are taking on board the idea of having a coffee morning, a whip around at work, a jar of change at home...and bringing the proceeds along to donate on the night. SUPPORT We, as a community can help Tasha live a better life. This is a young girl who desperately needs our help. So far, some progress has been made. For example, after years of meeting brick walls, Tasha’s case has finally reached the right person in Social Security and she will at last be recognised as having a disability which will mean a small amount of disability benefit. How much Tasha will receive, or when, is as yet unclear but anything will help towards the vast cost of her medications and care. Tasha’s family wishes to thank everyone who has supported the appeal so far and have issued a heartfelt plea, “Please don’t give up on Tasha now.”
Torrevieja’s strategic plan for tourism Councillor Fanny Serrano is in charge of putting together the plan for tourism in Torrevieja. She is keen to make sure that as many of the townspeople as possible are involved in what the plan should consist of. Several dates have already been organised for people to discuss issues relating to tourism andfind out more about what the town has planned. On 22nd March, 5, 12 and 27th April talks will be held in the Casino at 8pm. The talks are entitled ‘Green light to the strategic tourism plan: Torrevieja 365’. The use of 365 is to highlight the intention that tourism should be all-year round rather than just for the summer. The talks will be interactive
with those attending having chance to have their say. The idea is that the meetings will also provide a useful opportunity to find out more about the public’s views of the issue. There has already been a significant amount of fact finding. Interest groups have been asked for their views about how Torrevieja might usefully improve its tourist industry. Their views are now helping to inform the next planning stage. The talks will focus on accommodation, urban regeneration and sustainable mobility. The first talk on 22ndMarch is on the impact of Airbnb on Torrevieja. The Airbnb phenomenon has brought new opportunities as well as causing a
number of difficulties too. On April 5th the talk is focussed on Torrevieja as a coastal tourist area. On April 12th it’s about the use of bicycles in a tourist area and on April 27ththe government team will present the next steps for the future. Suzanne O’Connell
Pensioners protest in Torrevieja La Defensa de lasPensiones Públicas de la Vega Baja were out in force on Saturday 17th March to protest at what they consider to be the destruction of the state pension in Spain. It’s estimated that more than 1,000 people took part to show their anger at the minimal increase of .25% this year. The protesters marched through the main streets of the town to end their demonstration in the Plaza de la Constitución. Here they read a
manifesto in which they demanded the reinstatement of a better deal for pensioners. A particular target of their condemnation was the PP government of Mariano Rajoy. They accuse the prime minster and his party of robbing pensioners of their rights whilst defending corruption. ‘More pensions and less corruption’ was one of the slogans displayed on the banners carried by protestors through the town. It wasn’t only pensioners who were
protesting. Some younger people came out to join them too and show their support for the rally. ‘We are the pensioners of the future,’ explained one of the young people who’d joined them. Some local politicians were also out to show their support including Councillor Fanny Serrano, Councillor Victor Ferrández and some other political representatives from other local areas. BITE SIZE NEWS: Continued from page 5 of the fishing industry has been a priority over the past year and most recently Councillor Serrano represented Torrevieja at the Medsea fair. It wasn’t just about the town’s fishing reputation but also the 18 metre stand promoted the other nautical experiences that visitors can have. Real Club Náutico, Puerto Deportivo Marin Salinas and Puerto Deportivo Marina Internacional collaborated too. ‘Our mild climate allows people to practise all types of sports and activities across the whole year,’ explained the councillor. ‘This is reflected in our slogan, Torrevieja 365.’
The centre for the disabled closer to opening The town hall of Torrevieja has taken one more step towards the opening of the centre for the disabled. The centre has been closed now for some time due to lack of the correct paper work and also the need for renovation of some parts of the centre. The centre is intended to be used as a family meeting point, a children’s reception centre and a residence for people with functional difficulties. It is anticipated that once the building is open then some of its facilities will also be available to other public associations and organisations. Suzanne O’Connell

British scientists create world's first anti-flu pill Scientists in Britain have created the world’s first flu vaccine in pill form. The breakthrough could save the NHS and other European health services millions as it is the first synthetic vaccine, so it does not have to be kept in the fridge. Researchers also hope it would boost uptake for people with limited access to a GP or nurse. Study leader Prof Andrew Sewell, of the School of Medicine at Cardiff University, said oral vaccines were “great news for people with a fear of needles”. He added: “They can also be much easier to store and transport, making them far more suitable for use in remote locations.” Vaccines usually introduce a harmless form of a germ into our bodies. These stimulate immune cells, which remember the germ – often proteins – and launch a stronger attack if it returns. Researchers created a “mirror image” of such proteins, triggering the same immune response. Oral vaccines are rare as they are usually digested, so protection is lost. Refrigerating biological vaccines accounts for most of the cost of transporting them. The next step for the study, in Journal of Clinical Investigation, is to test the vaccine on humans. Dr Gino Martini, of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, said: “A pill-based vaccine can only have a positive impact on the number of patients receiving the vaccine.” In Europe, less than a third of older people had flu jabs this year.
Changes planned for the port The working port area of Torrevieja needs a refurbishment. The town council has drafted out plans for the port which include changes to the positioning of the fishing activities, a new fish market and the renovation of the existing market for tourist use. The town hall has presented the project which involves a total reorganisation of the area and combines tourist use and the fishing industry. There will be a new fish market and the old one will be remodelled to enable diversification of the fishing industry in the town. The project was shared with fishing industry representatives on 14th March. It is intended to satisfy both the needs of the tourist industry whilst also making working conditions better for the fishermen. The objective is to have a fishing port fit for the 21st century using funding partly provided by the European Union. The suggestion that the fishing industry in Torrevieja might be moved to a new site completely was rejected and the intention is just to improve the environment and conditions in which the fisherman and associated workers currently trade. The council is keen to ensure that the fishermen are involved and consulted at each stage of this process. Suzanne O’Connell

The big release! The fartet or Spanish toothcarp is a breed of fish that is only found in Valencia. As such it is a very special little fish and one that those keen on conservation and the protection of the local habitat want to
Volunteers release the fish into the canal
preserve. The volunteers at the natural parks of Torrevieja and La Mata have been involved in a breeding programme to help increase the number of these fish in the wild. Altogether eight fish were released on March 14th into the lake of Torrevieja. This is a delicate project. The fish had been bread in slightly less salty water than is found in the lake itself. Because of this it was decided to release them into the Acequión canal where the water is less saline, to avoid a major shock to the fish. The volunteers enjoyed the opportunity to see the fish released on what was a beautiful morning. They were rewarded too by seeing some herons which have come to the lake to breed. Each volunteer had chance to catch one of the fish in a small net at the centre. They were then transferred to a small tank in which they were taken to the canal to be released. Now, hopefully, they will go on to breed themselves and increase the fartet, Spanish toothcarp population. Suzanne O’Connell

Step-Mother confesses to killing Gabriel Ana Julia Quezada, the only suspect in the murder of eight-year-old Gabriel Cruz, has confessed to the crime, according to sources close to the investigation. She has answered all the questions
that officers asked her, she is cooperating,” said her lawyer. Sources say that Quezada claims that Gabriel got in her car with her so that they could go and “paint the house” on a family estate in nearby Rodalquilar, four kilometres away from his grandmother’s house, from where he disappeared, and where Quezada and her partner, the boy’s father, Ángel Cruz, were renovating a property. Once there, she claims that the youngster got angry with her and attacked her with a kind of hatchet. She says that she then hit him with the blunt part of the tool, leaving him unconscious. In a state of panic, she claimed to have strangled him with her hands, stripping him of his clothes and burying the body. The hatchet had not been located by Tuesday night by Civil Guard investigators, despite excavation work in the area in search of evidence. They did, however, locate the clothing of the boy, which Quezada threw away in a trash container 30 kilometres from the location she killed him, in the coastal town of Retamar. She did this during the 12 days that the youngster was officially missing, “when she could use the car alone,” sources from the investigation report. From the time of her arrest and up until mid-last week, Quezada had remained silent despite the fact that she was caught transporting the child’s body in the trunk of her car. The Civil Guard, which had her under surveillance, watched her take the corpse out of a water deposit on the family estate and arrested her as she was about to enter the garage of the property where she lived with her partner.
The details of the confession released so far leave several questions unanswered, however. For example, why was the estate in Rodalquilar not inspected earlier? And, did Quezada take the child there with the intention of killing him? Was the murder premeditated? These questions will have to be answered by a judge in Almería, who is now in charge of the case. The suspect is due to be handed over by the Civil Guard to the justice system today. While Ángel Cruz and the child’s mother, Patricia Ramírez, said their last farewell to Gabriel at a religious event inside Almería cathedral that was attended by thousands of sympathizers, Quezada began answering investigators’ questions, said her lawyer. Around 3,000 people, according to local police estimates, gathered outside Almería cathedral on Tuesday for Gabriel’s funeral. Sympathizers stood outside the temple and broke into applause when family members arrived for the Mass, yelling out: “You are not alone!” In honour Despite being visibly exhausted and in great emotional pain, Patricia Ramírez, the child’s mother, thanked everyone for their show of support and asked for people to honour Gabriel’s memory by listening to a song called Girasoles, by the Spanish singer Rozalén, because that is one of the last songs that she danced to with her son. “We know that Gabriel is somewhere with his fishes, and that the bad witch in the story no longer exists,” said Ramírez, alluding to the child’s nickname, El
Pescaíto, “The Little Fish.” His mother added that she is taking away “all the good things that this has brought out in people.” Gabriel’s remains arrived at the cathedral in a motorcade a few minutes before 11am. The parents walked inside to cries of “We are all Gabriel.” Spain’s Deputy Prime Minister, Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, and Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido attended the mass. Also on hand were the Andalusian regional premier, Susana Díaz, and Teresa Rodriguez, the head of Podemos inside the regional assembly. The family of Mari Luz Cortés, a little girl who was murdered in Huelva in 2008, also attended the funeral.

Parents and teachers launch Easter homework boycott Parents across Spain have called for a 'homework-free Easter' for their children in the latest step of the ongoing debate about how advisable or otherwise it is for kids to spend their free time in front of their schoolbooks. The Spanish PTA Confederation (CEAPA), which has around 11,000 members nationwide, already staged a 'homework strike' in 2016 in which mums and dads wrote to teachers to tell them their children would not be undertaking any work at weekends, but instead would be spending quality time with their families, in the fresh air and taking part in physical activity. CEAPA members also raised a petition calling for homework to be axed altogether or at least over weekends and school holidays. Even primary school children in very early years have homework every night, and the average pupil in Spain is glued to his or her textbooks for around two to three hours once home from class. For most primary school children, lessons end at 5pm, meaning it can be as late as 9pm at night before they have finished their homework. Parents and a majority of teachers partly blame the education reform brought in by former schools minister José Ignacio Wert, which has been mostly unpopular since its introduction as it is considered too right-wing, facts-andfigures-based, relying on learning by rote at the expense of critical thinking and creativity, valuing exam grades above
qualitative factors, focusing purely on bookwork rather than the social and life skills children need to be taught as they grow, and 'weeding out' the academically-weak at a very young age, potentially excluding late bloomers from promising careers in the future. According to mums and dads, since the reform, known as the LOMCE, was introduced, children spend more time on homework than ever before, which they consider a sign that the learning they undertake in the classroom 'is not meeting their educational needs'. Citing various figures, the CEAPA says there is no positive correlation between time spent on homework and academic success – rather, in some cases, a negative relationship, since children who spend all their free time working become 'burnt out' and achieve worse results. They also consider that schools are 'passing the buck' too much to children, giving them more and more homework to compensate for less learning in the classroom. “Homework, far from encouraging a child's all-round development, forms part of a damaging legacy of an obsolete method of education based upon memorisation and repetition of content,” the CEAPA states. “It also creates tension between parents and their children, since it leads to problems with family unity – adults do not have time to supervise such extensive amounts of work outside of school, and children and parents do not spend quality
time together. “Children need time to practise sports, arts, travel, and other activities both fun and restful, and which also contribute to their personal development.” The CEAPA has recently launched the Twitter hashtag #StopDeberes ('Stop Homework') to encourage everyone who thinks homework should be dramatically reduced or axed to give their reasons on the social media site and turn it into a trending topic. Their first step in the campaign is to call for schools not to set homework over the Easter holidays, so children can spend those two weeks relaxing, having fun, enjoying their family and friends, and indirectly learning and developing through healthy pastimes. The CEAPA also believes the excess of homework is doing nothing to alleviate the growing concerns about childhood obesity, since kids are forced to spend more time sitting down by default rather than practising physical activity.

WEEKLY EURO UPDATE Chancellor Hammond gave an upbeat spring statement this week and the pound enjoyed some of its best levels against the euro and the dollar in six months. In his statement, he reassured parliament that the budget is under control at last and the OBR has upped its estimates for UK economic growth in the coming five years to 1.5%, 1.3%, 1.3%, 1.4% and 1.5%. An ominous drama unfolded after Theresa May announced that 23 Russian Diplomats would be expelled from the country after the use of a nerve agent. The pound wavered on the news from Visa that spending on its credit cards fell 1.1% in February and that the first quarter of 2018 could be the "worst on record" caused a dip. It took more political support, this time in the form of one of David Davis's lieutenants who spoke optimistically about a Brexit transition arrangement with the EU. Robin Walker told the Institute of Directors "I want to stress that we are very close to a deal" for the pound to recover. For the most part, all eyes are turning to the Bank of England MPC meeting next week and a European Union leaders’ summit where the UK is set to announce a deal on its relations with the bloc postBrexit. German CPI hit forecasts, but Industrial Production data missed targets. After the European Central Bank dropped some key wording regarding the future of monetary policy - with inflation forecasts for 2019 revised lower and 2018 GDP growth revised up to 2.4%, - ECB President Mario Draghi made it clear this week that the ECB would continue to be reactive to the situation. His message for the ECB Watchers conference in Frankfurt was that that there should be more evidence that inflation is moving towards to the goal to bringing net asset purchases to a gradual end. He said the ECB would be looking for “sustained adjustment in the path of inflation towards our aim,” prior to making any major changes and in the meantime, “monetary policy
will remain patient, persistent and prudent." Despite a raft of ecostats emerging from the US, it is political intrigue that has been holding most influence over the US dollar. Nonfarm payrolls leapt 313k, the biggest increase in three years, and wages slowed to 2.6% but this had little impact investors had been expecting a decent US employment report and they got one. The 2.6% annual wage rise more than compensated for the 2.2% increase in consumer prices. Inflation came in exactly in line with forecast, with the headline rate at 2.2%. There was a poor performance from American retailers in February, while producer price inflation surprised on the upside for the month. Headline retail sales fell by 0.1% during February, deepening the 0.3% contraction seen in January, when markets had expected a 0.3% rise. Core retail sales grew by a lowly 0.2% when markets had anticipated a stronger recovery after January’s showing of 0% growth. Speculation that North Korea might ditch its nuclear weapons knocked the dollar back, as did Mr Trump's escalation of trade tensions and Gary Cohn's resignation. Close on the heels of Mr Cohn’s departure was the very public firing of Secretary of State Rex Tillerson; share prices and the US dollar were marked down following the news, perhaps not only because it followed so closely from Cohn’s departure but because investors were concerned about the appointment of Michael Pompeo, who is said to be ideologically aligned with the president on trade and foreign policy and adds fuel to the fear of a trade war. A victory for the Democrats in a special election held in a previous Trump stronghold in Pennsylvania is being considered as an indicator for the outcome of the midterm elections in November. Predictably, the Republicans are seeking to brush it off whilst the Democrats intend to seize the momentum. dollars are vulnerable to the looming prospect of renewed trade tensions.

Five steps to beat the low rate trap: How to invest to make your money work harder... without taking too much risk
A
national obsession with squirreling savings away in secure cash deposits rather than choosing potentially higher‐ earning alternatives costs households more than £30 billion in lost returns last year. Despite earning the lowest interest on savings for 20 years, savers piled into cash at a greater rate than ever in 2017. Here are the 5 steps to beating cash apathy and getting started in investing. 1. REMEMBER SOME CASH IS GOOD Keep enough cash savings for emergencies – three months of household income is the rule of thumb. 2. DO YOUR RESEARCH Before investing, do some research. Find investments – shares or funds – you feel comfortable with. 3. REDUCE RISK You need to make sure that your investments are diversified, which essentially means don't put all your eggs in one basket. 4. DISCOVER BENEATH
WHAT
LIES
Nervous investors often start with a cautious investment fund which will split exposure across equities, property, bonds and cash. These funds will not turn you into an investment millionaire but nor will they crash and burn if markets take a turn for the worse. 5. ASSESS YOUR ATTITUDE TO RISK Few people are comfortable with the idea of losing money. But just as powerful is the regret of being too cautious. The best response is to spread money across different investments. Get help with assessing attitude to risk from a qualified financial adviser. This is where Seagate Wealth can help as we have access to a range of flexible, cost effective savings schemes from some of the worlds’ leading product providers. Homes & Gardens
There are an awful lot of houses with high, forbidding walls in this part of Spain, turning homes in to fortresses. They are expensive to construct, need regular maintenance and do not deter a burglar if he has really made up his mind to get into your property. In fact it’s far more difficult to get over a prickly hedge!
Hedges are more eco-friendly, providing colour, and habitat for birds and bees. And whilst they give just as much privacy and protection from wind, they don’t make you feel imprisoned but rather close to nature. Another plus is that they change according to season, often creating all year interest. You can make hedges from a wide variety of shrubs and trees; Yew (Taxus) is a great favourite as it is slow growing - so you will need to ask your nursery for mature plants if you need an instant hedge. It needs to be planted in spring or autumn with about 50cm between plants. You will need to clip it in spring and late summer until it has reached maturity and then just one tidy-up a year in September will keep it in good shape. Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) is another good hedging plant. There are a number of options, including ‘horizontalis’with a wide spread and the ability to make a thick hedge quickly. Myoporum, in Spanish often just called Siempreverde, is a fast growing plant with thick glossy leaves which does need regular clipping and gets rather leggy if left to its own devices. However, put it behind some iron railings to give it some support and it is a pretty, evergreen option with small white flowers in spring. Lantana camara is a very popular contender for favourite hedge plant. You can buy a variety of colours and plant them in a row so that the different shades overlap and entwine as it grows. It does need some maintenance, but will reward you with flowers for most of the year. A spiteful hedge with prickly sprays of long, scented flowers is Berberis.
It is a great intruder deterrent! Plant about 60cms apart and you will have a thick, impenetrable hedge which only needs a trim once a year after flowering. If your garden is very exposed, most of the plants already mentioned can form a windbreak, but if you want to include hedge within your garden to divide it up, or emphasize a particular feature, think about a fragrant, low-growing herbal hedge. Shrubby herbs are native to this climate, so Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), Lavender (Lavandula) and Bay laurel (Laurus nobilis) are naturals. One of the most versatile herbs, Bay laurel can be grown as a tall evergreen tree, but lends itself to pruning, training, growing as an espaliered plant, or even as a bonsai style herb plant. Bay plants are very attractive with their waxy-looking olive green leaves, branches that can be trained to suit your taste, and flavourful leaves that will serve a valuable function as a versatile kitchen spice. Lavender and Rosemary obviously will not grow into tall hedges, but are ideal for defining an area of the garden. They smell wonderful and both produce blue/purple flowers in the spring. They like full sun and should be planted 30-40cms apart. Pinch out the growing tips to make them branch out. Lavender flowers can be harvested when they are freshly opened and dried, hanging upside down in bunches in a cool place. As your hedge is going to be a long-term part of your garden it is important to make sure you get it off to a good start. Do not plant too close to the house or a road - and remember to trim it back so that the pathway outside is safe for pedestrians. You should prepare the planting area in advance, digging it deeply in the early spring and then leaving it to dry and break up a bit for a few days. Dig a trench about a metre wide and put a good layer of compost or horse manure at the bottom. This encourages the roots to keep in their own territory and stops them wandering off to rob other plants of food and water. Finishing the border with a layer of organic mulch will help prevent weed competition and conserve moisture as the border plants grow together. Stake any thin or spindly plants and water well until they are established. After that most hedges need little extra water and will give you years of privacy and pleasure. Marc Vijverberg

WELCOME TO BILBAO with Vivalia Travel Bilbao has more than a dozen museums covering a range of fields including art, science, and sport, which have played a central role in Bilbao being named one of the creative cities in the world
Bilbao is a city in northern Spain, the largest city in the province of Biscay and in the Basque Country as a whole. It is also the largest city proper in northern Spain. Bilbao is the tenth largest city in Spain, with a population of 345,141 as of 2015. Bilbao is situated in the north-central part of Spain, some 16 kilometres (10 mi) south of the Bay of Biscay, where the economic social development is located, where the estuary of Bilbao is formed. After its foundation in the early 14th century by Diego Lรณpez V de Haro, head of the powerful Haro family, Bilbao was a commercial hub of the Basque Country that enjoyed significant importance in Green Spain. This was due to its port activity based on the export of iron extracted from the Biscayan quarries. Throughout the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth, Bilbao experienced heavy industrialisation, making it the centre of the second-most industrialised region of Spain, behind Barcelona. Climate Its proximity to the Bay of Biscay gives Bilbao an oceanic climate (Cfb), with precipitation occurring throughout the year and without a well-defined dry summer. Precipitation is abundant, and given the latitude and atmospheric dynamics, rainy days represent 45% and cloudy days 40% of the
annual total. The rainiest season is between October and April, November being the wettest. Snow is not frequent in Bilbao, although it is possible to see snow on the top of the surrounding mountains.
Biscay, and its extraction is legally protected since 1526. Mining was the main primary activity in Bilbao and the minerals, of great quality, were exported to all over Europe.
Economy
Tourism
Bilbao has been the economic center of the Basque Country since the times of the Consulate, mainly because of commerce in Castilian products on the town's port, but it was not until the 19th century when it experimented with big development, mainly based on the exploitation of the iron mines and siderurgy, which promoted the maritimal traffic, the portuary activity and the construction of ships After the dramatic industrial crisis of the 1980s, Bilbao was forced to rethink its very economic foundations. That is how it transformed into a successful service town.
The first notion of Bilbao as a tourist destination came with the inauguration of the railway between Bilbao and the coastal neighbourhood of Las Arenas, in the municipality of Getxo in 1872. The connection made Bilbao a minor beach destination. The real tourist surge though would come much later with the inauguration of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in 1997. Thereafter tourist arrivals registered a continued upward trend.
Port of Bilbao The historical port was located in what today is an area called the Arenal, a few steps from the Casco Viejo, until the late 20th century. In 1902, an exterior port was built at the mouth of the estuary, in the coastal municipality of Santurtzi. Further extensions led to a superport, that in the 1970s replaced the docks inside Bilbao.
Mining and ironworks Iron is the main and most abundant raw material found in
Museums Bilbao has more than a dozen museums covering a range of fields including art, science, and sport, which have played a central role in Bilbao being named one of the creative cities in the world. Museums include the famous Guggenheim Museum Bilbao of contemporary art, designed by Frank Gehry and opened on 19 October 1997. Another important museum is the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, established in 1908 and housing a notable collection of Spanish and other European work.

Medieval Craft Market in Alcalá del Júcar at Easter If you haven't made plans yet for the coming Easter weekend (29 March to 1 April), it might be a
good idea to visit Alcalá del Júcar. All that weekend you can walk through a delightful medieval market, with real artisans working at their craft, and also enjoy the wide range of activities and stunning sights that this charming village has to offer. Visiting the castle, museums or caves, taking a walk along the river Júcar with its nice sandy beach, riding horseback and climbing mountains are just a few of the many possibilities. Also there are some really nice restaurants with authentic Spanish food, and plenty of B&B's and hotels - this is the real Spain. The village is built against a mountain side with a castle on top and at the bottom an historical Roman bridge crossing
the river. Next to this bridge you will find the square with authentic craft stalls in medieval style, where a nice selection of artisans will be working and selling their products directly to the public. There will be crafts people with different specialities such as ceramics, hand painted T-
shirts, wooden furniture, puppetry, dolls, toys and also jewellery in silver, glass, macramé and much more. You can watch a real blacksmith at work, see demonstrations of woodworking, make your own pottery or get an original drawing from a cartoonist as a nice souvenir. The children can enjoy a show with giant soap bubbles, take a ride in the merry-go-round, watch a puppet show, play traditional board games or make their own artwork in one of the workshops. A group of troubadours will walk around and play medieval music, you can find a stilt walker and
other medieval characters and to top it all...enjoy a fire show at night. As has been the case for the last five years, the organisation of this market will be in the experienced hands of the craft association Amata, which guarantees that everything on the stalls will have been made by the person at the stall. This also enables you to buy unique products with even the possibility, in some cases, to have the object customised to your preferences. The market will be open from Thursday 29 March until Sunday 1 April and the opening hours are from 11h until 14h and from 17h until 21h. Alcalá del Júcar is a beautiful village in the province of Albacete. To get there from the coast, follow the A31 (Alicante to Madrid) and turn off at exit 136, marked Alpera; from there follow the signs along the CM3201. If you wish to see photos of previous years you can visit: http://www.amata.es/Alcala%20 17.html, and for more information you can call 639 979 678 (English spoken). For more information on accommodation or activities such as rafting, mountain climbing, horse riding, kayaking etc. you can call the town's tourist info, 967 473 090.

hether you choose a property to live in permanently, or you’re in the market for a holiday home, size is a factor on deciding which home you’re most suited for. Bigger doesn’t always mean better, but it’s finding that perfect balance that’s neither too big, nor too small. To help you decide, ask yourself these four questions to determine how much space you really need: 1. Is this my forever home? If you’re relocating to Spain, then you need to figure out if this will be your “stepping stone” home for right now, or somewhere for you to grow old in. Everyone feels they should be looking for their forever home, when really they may not need something so big for “right now.” 2. What are my priorities? If you’re thinking of buying a home with a guest bedroom, to allow you to accommodate your long list of friends and family whilst on their holidays, then you need to focus more on your own needs, and not so much on theirs. They will still enjoy visiting you, even if they have to sleep on a bed settee! 3. How spacious does the home feel? Even if the home doesn’t have a big footprint, it can feel more spacious if it is open plan. Even large homes can feel cramped if they’re dark, or have an impractical layout. 4. Mortgage or cash? If you’re contemplating whether to buy a
larger home with a mortgage, take a look at what your finances will look like, in a few years time. How valuable does that guest bedroom look to you now? So, stop focusing on the amount of rooms in the home, and start paying attention to the actual size of the rooms you’ll be spending most of your time in! Happy House Hunting!

Easter in English in Orihuela
Business Profile
Differences between the various building licences in Spain In the UK, licences are pretty straightforward and easy, allowing the building of minor extensions or other buildings with a simple and basic process. However, that doesn’t happen in Spain. All building work needs one of the following three types of licences.
Orihuela Councillor Sofía Álvarez has explained the Town Hall’s campaign to promote Semana Santa (Holy Week) across the municipality, which was declared to be of International Tourist interest in 2010. The councillor said they are widening the focus to attract tourists and visitors who live in bigger and further afield places so they come and revitalise the municipality. To this end, there is advertising in the metro and train stations in Madrid, Valencia and Alicante, and Alicante, Valencia and Murcia airports, and on national radio stations. The events are also being promoted in the English language media across the Alicante and Murcia area. “We want to fill the municipality with curious visitors who can come and visit our procession of the Caballero Cubierto (Covered Gentleman),
see the singers of The Passion and see our beloved Diablesa (She-Devil statue) in the streets of Orihuela,” she added. During the press conference Sofia Alvarez presented the Easter poster, which is a photo taken by local resident Alberto Aragón showing the tower of Santa Justa during the Procession of Silence, one of the unique elements of Orihuela’s celebrations. Also, in order to show off the different aspects of Easter in Orihuela, Álvarez explained that a very visual leaflet has been produced in English and Spanish explaining all the different activities to do during Holy Week. Visitors can enjoy four different official guided tours, in Spanish and English, on which you can taste the typical sweets made at the municipality’s convents, and find out about the
relics and art of Semana Santa in Orihuela, as well of course, as one dedicated to the city’s illustrious poet, Miguel Hernández. There will also be concerts given by wind and string instruments outside Orihuela’s five national monuments (Nuestra Señora de Monserrate sanctuary, Santiago church, Santas Justa y Rufina church, the Catedral del Salvador cloister, and Santo Domingo college), performed by quartets of teachers from the Pedro Terol Professional Music Concervatory. Anyone interested in participating in these tours and activities can ask for information or book a place on a bus to the city at the Tourism Office in Orihuela Costa on: 96 676 0000 or Orihuela City Centre on: 96 530 4645. Mayor Building Work Licence Required whenever there is: - Extensions either attached or detached, such as garages, work sheds, etc. Any building work that implies building a roof with over 1.5mts high. - Pools - Even small or fibreglass ones. - Any structural building work inside or outside the property, such as putting new beams, structural repairs, knocking down load-bearing walls. - Any internal change of layouts, such as making rooms, kitchens or toilets bigger or smaller, subdividing rooms etc. Mayor building work licences always need to be signed off by a qualified architect and the paperwork required is usually vast. The process can be long and bumpy. Town Halls take months to issue the licence and they also require that the builder is qualified and registered. Minor Building Work Licences Minor building work licences are those needed to do any building work that
doesn’t imply structure, doesn’t increase the build size of the property or doesn’t involve a roof, for example, tiling, repairing, cladding, plumbing, electricity etc. They are generally easy and cheap to obtain.
The Antiquity Certificate is also the document needed at the Notary to update the Title Deeds (Escritura) with any alterations introduced to the property. The requirements to obtain a Retrospective Licence in Alicante is that the extension or pool needs to be over four years old, before 20th August of 2014 (minimum 8 years). Martinez de la Casa Architects is one of the most prominent and respectable practices in the area, providing all types of Certificates and
Retrospective Licence/Certificate of Antiquity This is required whenever the property has been extended, altered or had a pool built without a proper building licence. By having a Retrospective Licence/Antiquity Certificate, building work already done becomes unobjectionable and vendors use it to avoid putting off potential buyers, due to the existence of undeclared or unlicensed building work.
Licenses, amongst other services. They are the Number 1 company in EPC Certificates (121€ inc IVA) and Number 1 for Antiquity Certificates (pools 229€ inc IVA, extensions 326€ inc IVA) and Habitation Licences (from 118€ inc IVA, Town Hall tax not included, depending on each municipality). Coastal walk The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, joined more than 430 people as he took part in the recent hiking activity "Orihuela en ruta", organised by the departments of Sports, Environment and Rural Development.
The walk consisted of a tour of the beaches of Orihuela Costa, starting at Mil Palmeras, passing through Campoamor, Cabo Roig and La Zenia, and ending at Punta Prima. The walkers covered 12 kilometres and during the route they saw emblematic places such as the Cabo Roig Tower, the La Glea Bridge, the Microreservas and the Fossil Beach. This was one of a series of organised walks and most of the "Orihuela en ruta" walkers participated in the previous tours. However, the Mayor also said that each time ‘we have more participation from visitors and tourists from other municipalities and across the province of Alicante’. Many walkers also bring
their dogs and children along to enjoy the event as a family. The councillor of Sports and Rural Development, Víctor Valverde, agreed that
the coastal walk ‘has been a great success of participation as we have counted more than 430 people registered’. The councillor added that as far as he was concerned those taking part had ‘been able enjoy a day of fitness activity in which the facilities we have provided, such as transportation, has been a great incentive to encourage people to participate’. The City Council made available a bus service from downtown Orihuela to the coast at a price of 7 euros, while also enabled a free bus service from the point of arrival of the route to the starting point for those people who travelled by car to the coast of Oriola. Miguel Ángel Fernández,
Councillor for the Environment, explained that form his departments perspective the purpose of this initiative is ‘to promote different hiking routes in which we can educate and publicise the districts and the coast of Orihuela with interesting routes’. The Mayor said that the government team is already working on signage for each of the routes to obtain official walk status soon.
Next route The fourth walk in the series will take place in the hamlet of Barbarossa, with the date being announced in the near future along with the schedule for the bus transport service so that participants can buy their tickets. Again this walk will promote fitness, whilst discovering the municipality. Mireille Toddington

Charity singing continues for Velvetones
CostaBlancaPeople 20th - 26th March 2018
Calling all clubs Money for charities and organisations Charities, self-help groups, clubs and associations – there are many different English-speaking groups in existence in the Vega Baja area. But do we know what exists, where and for whom? HELP Vega Baja would like to compile a list of organisations with a view to making sure that the people who are looking for something to do, company or support are able to find the one that best meets their needs. This is something of a task. In the past few years with changes to the local English-speaking population, it has been hard to keep tabs on which groups are still going, which are new and those which have closed. Michele Masson, President of HELP Vega Baja, is calling for your assistance in creating an up-to-date inventory of what is available and where.
Some Velvetones braved the high winds last weekend to promote their Harmony Chorus at Expo Torrevieja. The chorus raises funds for their Charity ALPE, a special needs school in Torrevieja. They are singing on 22nd March at El Rancho, Los Montesinos at 7pm. Come along and enjoy a BBQ for €10 and help AYUDA QUATRO PATAS animal Charity aswell! Call Maria for tickets on 603 260 590 Velvetones rehearse every Thursday 5.15 to 7.45 at El Paraiso Restaurant Torrevieja near Carrefour. Check out the website www.velvetonesharmonytorrevieja. com or call Mary-Anne 966 714 973
‘This is going to be quite a task,’ explains Michele. ‘So many come and go and obviously all the information needs to be checked out.’ Michele would like people to send through the details of any group they are involved with. The purpose behind it is to ensure that no one is left isolated. People can sometimes be unaware of the different organisations they can join or that can give them assistance. In discussion with the group CARE, Michele feels that it is important to bring these groups more into the public eye. ‘We are hoping that by providing details of groups some people will join them, make friends and
this may result in a better caring environment.’ With an aging population of Englishspeaking people living in the Vega Baja there are occasionally incidents where people have an accident at home, need assistance but no one notices. Improving the local network could help prevent cases of isolation and loneliness. If you belong to a group in the area please send to office@helpvegabaja.com: • The title of the group • A sentence about its purpose or main aims • A contact email • A webpage reference or Facebook, if there is one • A contact telephone number This is quite a task but one that is worthwhile. Although HELP Vega Baja have some volunteers who will be able to work on compiling the inventory, Michele is also asking for a volunteer who might be able to co-ordinate the project. It would benefit from someone who is able to give it more time to ensure that the information received is useful and current. If you think you might be able to help in the collection and collation of the list then please contact the San Miguel Centre on the email address office@helpvegabaja.com or telephone 966 723 733. U3A present their donation
Torrevieja U3A are an independent selfhelp group whose members are in their third age and past the second age of full-time employment and parental responsibility. Based at the CMO Building in Torrevieja, they meet on the last Monday of each month at 11am.
www.costablancapeople.com
For the past two years they have been raising money for Torrevieja’s Alzheimer Association. On Thursday 15th March they presented a cheque for €4,000.12 at the Alzheimer Association’s HQ. Every year a different charity is chosen and is the focus of any
fundraising they do. Due to a change of president this charity has remained the same over a two-year period. The money was raised through raffles, book exchanges and other fundraising events. However, fundraising isn’t the main purpose of the organisation. Their intention is to enable older people to continue learning for pleasure through their Interest Groups. Members join up to pursue particular areas of interest such as the History of Spain, Spanish, Creative Writing and Walking. The U3A is also a social club and organises a number of trips and events that members can join in with. Currently there are 800 members in Torrevieja and it continues to be a thriving group in spite of a number of people returning to the UK. For more information about Torrevieja’s U3A you can visit their website http://www.torreviejau3a.org Suzanne O’Connell
ome official charities or ONGs in Torrevieja will receive money from the town hall it was announced. Councillor Carmen Morate explained in a press conference that €331, 273.41 will be issued to eleven different local organisations. This total is 33% higher than over the last two years. Those due to benefit include: • AFA €45,000 • ADIEM €45,000 • APANEE €42,570.15 • Alimentos Solidarios €42,896.76 • Esperanza y Vida €35,369 • Cruz Roja €29,209.47 • ALPE €28,295.83 • ASIMEPP €21,227.87 • APAEX €20,924.83 • AFECANCER €14,162.22 • Asociación de Amas de Casa €6,424.49
The money agreed will be given out during March. Unfortunately, some charities did not benefit this time round because of missing the deadlines. These included Stop Desahucios – the organisation dedicated to helping people at risk of being evicted from their homes. Reach Out also unfortunately were not able to present the necessary papers in the time allowed. Not all the ONGs will receive the amount they asked for. Each organisation was asked to be able to justify their funding requests and not all of them were able to do this sufficiently. The town council are pleased with the overall figure they have been able to allocate and the fact that the average amount given over the last two years amounts to €323,261.41. This is more than the average amount given over the previous two years of €241,676.15. Suzanne O’Connell

AMAZON WORKERS IN SPAIN PLAN FIRST EVER STRIKE
More than 1,000 Amazon workers in Spain are planning to go on strike this week against a planned drop in allowances and overtime, a first in the country, a union spokesperson said recently. “We have announced a strike for the first time in Amazon Spain but it will only take place in the logistics centre of San Fernando de Henares, near Madrid, the biggest in Spain and the first created in the country in 2012,” said Ana Berceruelo of the CCOO union. The strike is planned for 21st and 22nd March. Berceruelo said the online retail giant wanted to increase salaries below the

inflation rate, and reduce allowances for night work as well as pay for overtime. CCOO says the workers in the San Fernando de Henares centre, where they prepare packages for clients in Spain and Europe, have not had a wage increase since 2016. Berceruelo said 1,100 Amazon employees, and 900 people employed by temping companies, work on site. She said that the average salary was around 20,000 to 21,000 euros ($24,800 to $26,000) a year against 19,000 euros in the logistics sector. “We will continue to maintain direct dialogue with our associates and guarantee the best working conditions, a competitive pay package, a great work atmosphere and professional opportunities,” the company said in a statement. Amazon has grown from a humble beginning as an online bookseller to a colossus of the internet whose founder Jeff Bezos is now the world’s richest man.

But the Hospital del Mar, one of Catalunya’s top six kidney transplant centres, reveals that it carried out transplants in 2016 and 2017, one using a live donor and the other a deceased donor, in which all three of the living persons involved were Jehovah’s Witnesses. The procedure, established nationwide, involves having to find medical professionals willing to agree to perform

Kidney transplants without blood transfusion for Jehovah’s Witness hospital in Barcelona has successfully carried out two kidney transplants without involving blood transfusions, meaning the process would not be rejected on religious grounds by patients who are Jehovah’s Witnesses. Those who follow this branch of Christianity are against the use of blood transfusions, which means in the event of a patient needing an organ transplant the operation would not have been

surgery without the use of donated blood, and includes close teamwork between nephrology, urology, anaesthetists, transplant surgeons and their related nursing staff. And the hospital has to sign a contract agreeing to ‘respect all religious beliefs’ in performing operations, so that Jehovah’s Witnesses can feel safe in the knowledge they will not be given a ‘sneaky’ transfusion whilst under anaesthetic. For the process to be successful without endangering the patient’s health, ‘much stricter requirements’ are put in place as regards haemoglobin, or red blood-cell levels, before operating. Patients are required to take a course of the drug Erithropoyetine, which stimulates haemotite production, since kidney failure or disease suppresses the body’s ability to create these cells. Normally, Erithropoyetine is used at a lower dose in non-Jehovah’s Witness patients, since they do not need to produce as many red blood cells ahead of the transplant as any drop in haemoglobin can be treated with a transfusion.

Record global rankings rise for Spanish universities This year's global university rankings includes 12 Spanish colleges in the top 50, a major improvement on the 2017 edition. The QS Subject Rankings list considers universities by subject, and the dozen in Spain which feature are highlighted for 22 different faculties. Ranking is decided through factors such as results of major surveys by employers and academics, and data relating to research carried out in the universities. This year's list by the company QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) has analysed 46 specialist subjects within six main areas: arts and humanities; engineering and technology; health and medical sciences; natural sciences; social sciences, and business administration. Other than the University of Navarra, based in the regional capital of Pamplona, all the other universities in Spain in the top 50 are in Madrid and Barcelona. Madrid's Complutense University comes out on top, followed by Madrid Autonomous University, Madrid Polytechnic, Madrid's Carlos III University, Barcelona's Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona University, and Barcelona Autonomous University, then Navarra.
After Navarra comes Catalunya Polytechnic, the University College of Hotel, Catering and Tourism in Sant Pol de Mar in Catalunya, the IESE Business School and the ESADE Business School. The Complutense is highlighted at number 30 for its faculty of odontology – students of which are pictured above, in their classroom – number 33 for veterinary medicine and number 46 for classical languages. Madrid Autonomous University comes 49th for sports and exercise science, whilst the Carlos III comes 22nd in librarian and archiving studies and 50th in economics. The city's Polytechnic is 31st for architecture and town planning and 46th for engineering, whilst in Catalunya, the Pompeu Fabra is 38th in the world for economics, Barcelona University is 21st for anatomy and physiology, 33rd for archaeology, 46th for philosophy and 49th for education studies. Barcelona Autonomous University comes 31st for veterinary medicine and Catalunya Polytechnic is 22nd in architecture and town planning and 34th in engineering. Navarra University is 49th in media and public relations and 50th in philosophy, whilst the
Sant Pol de Mar University College of Hotel, Catering and Tourism is 48th in the world for its catering management degrees. The ESADE Business School, part of RamĂłn Llull University, is 27th in business studies and the IESE Business School is 31st in business studies. Colleges on the up Quacquarelli Symonds' report shows that Spanish colleges have made significant improvements in comparison with their European counterparts, especially in science, technology, engineering and maths, and in the 48 tables included in the paper, Spanish universities appear 313 times. Only in 30 of these have subject areas in Spanish universities dropped down the list, or 9.6% of the total for the country, and the nation's higher education centres have broken the national record with 91 ranking improvements, or 29.1 percent of the total. Only Switzerland and Portugal have shown greater improvements than Spain out of all the countries studied. Spain's betterment has beaten those seen in the UK, The Netherlands, Austria, Belgium, Italy and Ireland, whilst higher education systems in France and Germany have actually worsened this year.

Ciudadanos wants to axe temporary job contracts Centre-right political party Ciudadanos – the fourth-largest party in the Spanish Parliament – wants to do away with temporary job contracts and launch a series of employment reforms including 'anti-crisis insurance' for the selfemployed. Party leader Albert Rivera says his team's proposed 'rucksack of rights' includes an insurance policy which will help prevent small businesses and the selfemployed from having to shut up shop for good because they cannot pay redundancy money to employees during a recession. The 'rucksack of rights' also offers financial assistance to companies who never, or rarely, sack staff or make them redundant. Rivera's 'new professional model' and 'fight against job insecurity', as he refers to the different elements of the proposals, would be a 'balanced, innovative and brave' law which would 'bring Spain in line with the rest of the EU', pointing out that the percentage of Spanish residents whose jobs are only temporary doubles that of the European average. Only around 5.5 percent of new jobs created in recent years have been permanent, with contracts typically ranging from a few days to three or, at best, six months, and temporary jobs as a whole
have risen by 56 percent. Already, the European Commission has criticised Spain for failing to take action to resolve this and ensure permanent employment and job security is the norm, saying the Spanish government has 'not listened to or acted upon' Europe's recommendations. Rivera has also criticised the right-wing PP-led government, and its immediate opposition, the left-wing socialists, or PSOE, for not having taken steps to improve working conditions over the last few years. With pensioners up in arms after only getting a 0.25 percent annual increase – the minimum permitted by law – for the sixth year running, Rivera says the 'best possible pension reform' is to 'end job insecurity', since it would guarantee regular contributions in taxes and to the Social Security pot which would cover pension needs. Ciudadanos' proposals essentially come in three categories: the first involves scrapping the long list of different types of job contract currently in existence, replacing them with one that does not expire – the only others permitted being those for work experience or training, 'internship contracts', and those for covering absent workers who are off sick, on maternity or
paternity leave or other extended absences such as sabbaticals. Rivera proposes that for all job contracts, the minimum redundancy payment should remain at 20 days' gross salary per year of employment, or 33 days for dismissals that could be deemed unfair. Secondly, the 'rucksack of rights' seeks to give workers greater job security in general, including those who work for themselves rather than being employed by companies or the public sector. Thirdly, Rivera proposes a 'stability bonus' for companies who 'make fewer redundancies or dismissals', which would come in the form of a discount on their Social Security payments. “I'm convinced the majority of Spaniards are going to support this project,” Rivera says. “The job situation in general in Spain right now is unacceptable and needs to be changed. “For this reason, we've presented proposals in which nobody loses out, since redundancy pay extends to all workers. “In 2017, a total of 21.5 million job contracts were signed, of which 20 million were temporary, or 93 percent, and Ciudadanos considers this a national emergency.”

A good night's sleep is the secret to best skin ever The concept of beauty sleep isn't a myth. Science tells us that good sleep is essential for repairing, regenerating and restructuring the skin. "It’s the foundation on which to build and maintain health, well-being and the best long-term way of guarding against stress and age-related diseases. The minimum sleep time recommended for adults is seven hours, but only 32 percent of adults achieve this or over eight hours sleep a night (the optimum sleeping time). The correlation
between good skin and sleep is evergrowing, and has driven many brands to develop products that work best when you are sleeping or are enhanced by a good night's sleep. It is proven that the cell rejuvenation process takes place when your body is resting, suggesting that your skin's luminosity is better postrest. Here's why getting more shut eye could be the secret tip to your best skin yet. During the day when it's light, our skin’s main job is to keep hydrated and protected. At night when its dark and
we’re sleeping, the skin is genetically programmed to switch into recovery mode; proving beauty sleep to be far more than a marketing tag. However, before you go to sleep isn't the time to pile on lots of products and hope for the best - simplicity is key. Our skin cells have a limited amount of energy and like us they can’t do too many things at once. Using too many products and skincare ingredients will confuse your skin and cause it to become irritated and clogged.

New innovations in technology for 2018 Computational photography This refers to the broad range of ways that engineers are working with software to improve digital cameras. Big high-end sensors and fine glass lenses aren’t in any danger of being replaced when it comes to getting the best shot possible, but software solutions are making new techniques possible, and constantly improving small affordable cameras. Smartphones are getting thinner, but the images they can capture only get better. Software is one of the biggest reasons for that. Apple and Samsung are using software (and dual lenses) to create excellent depth of field effects on their phones, and even big deal directors like Steven Soderbergh and Michel Gondry have decided to start shooting with the iPhone this year. Meanwhile, Google’s Pixel 2 camera got our recommendation for its superior HDR processing, and it also is integrating a ton of AI features into its camera software that will only get more useful. Newcomer Rylo took a shot at GoPro with its first device that combines an action cam and a 360 camera into a pocket-sized gadget with some serious software at an affordable price. It has some of the best image stabilisation on the market. And its intuitive editing software allows you to just shoot everything around you to make shot

choices and choreograph smooth camera movements later. Self-driving cars Talk about self-driving cars has been around so long that it’s almost mundane. No one seemed to care that Waymo officially abandoned test drivers behind the wheels of its self-driving cars in Arizona back in November, and is launching a self-driving taxi service in the suburbs of Phoenix. The promise of self-driving cars means more efficient commutes, more free time, fewer traffic accidents, big leaps in AI, and all sorts of other gamechanging advancements. As far as getting these things out to the public goes, Tesla insists that its auto-pilot feature, which offers limited self-driving capabilities, will be ready to drive itself from California to New York very soon. That means Tesla owners would already have a self-driving car because the company just to push out a software update. Nintendo Nintendo is good. We started the year with the gloomy death of the Wii U, an excellent console that never took off, and lots of talk about Nintendo’s shift to unimpressive mobile games. It’s hard to stress enough how much it seemed like the house that Mario built might go the way of Sega. Then the Switch happened. The Switch did what Nintendo does best - it wasn’t too expensive, it offered
a single gimmick, and it has some great games. Its signature feature—going seamlessly from console play on the TV to mobile play—was useful and instantly made sense to millions of gamers. But what was most important is that software developers liked it. Ports of older games like Skyrim and Doom are actually fresh takes because they’re now mobile games that are almost as good as their counterparts on other consoles and PC. Indie developers are flooding the system with excellent games like Stardew Valley and SteamWorld Dig 2. And the games made by Nintendo, like Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, exceeded the usual high-quality to be the best reviewed of the year. It hasn’t even been on the market for a year and the Switch has almost sold as many units as the Wii U. The SNES Classic beat out all the other consoles on the market in sales for two months straight. And the new 2DS XL kept its huge library of games going for the foreseeable future. While the PS4 and Xbox One are fine systems, their new iterations a virtually identical. This year they put out 4K upgrades that are powerful but don’t inspire very much excitement. Nintendo is different and it needs to keep giving the others some competition and continue being weird just because it can.

Common Causes of Road Rage For the majority of motorists, driving in a courteous manner is the most natural way to progress, however, there are occasions when a normally calm driver see red and is transformed into a monster. Road rage can affect everybody, but most of the time the most frustrating causes of an increase in stress levels are caused by other people, often unintentionally, but sometimes by those few drivers whose selfish and almost bullying attitude poses a risk to everybody on the road. Amongst the most common bad habits is “aggressive driving”, defined as “any ways that directly or indirectly affect both pedestrians and drivers and cause, harm or damage to other people moving at the same time where traffic flows”. In high-traffic situations, when there are many drivers who interact at the same time, there is often an increase in aggressive behaviour by some, but this is not necessarily a new phenomenon as it has been present almost as long as roads and cars themselves have existed. Social factors largely determine this aggressiveness. Haste, noisy environments, many people in a confined space, stress that accompanies our daily lives, are all situations that increase our aggressiveness behind the wheel, according to a recent report by LegalCar. Their report offers two main reasons why this aggressiveness increases. When driving a car without being aware of the many psychophysiological mechanisms that will be useful to strengthen the capacity to react in time to adversity when we are driving, and the increase caused by drivers being seemingly unpunished for their actions. Many of the elements that influence the violent reactions behind the wheel have to do with stereotypes. For example, some people react aggressively on the grounds of sex against women, against novice and older drivers. In addition, racism and even a person´s clothing can cause an increase in driver aggression. Other driver´s actions such as seeing a driver using a mobile phone or carrying out a seemingly dangerous or unnecessary manoeuvre, or speeding, can all increase the stresses of driving. Many of these factors are illegal, as they can all be extremely dangerous, and so we will look at some of the most common mistakes, in the hope that if we are aware of some of the factors that can cause road
rage, we can avoid creating the situation ourselves, either unintentionally or otherwise. Some of the most common avoidable “mistakes” that can lead to road rage include blocking junctions, such as a vehicle stopping in the middle of a crossroads when their exit wasn´t clear, thus blocking the flow of traffic across the junction when the priority changes. Centre-lane hogging on motorways, or even, in some cases, remaining in the lefthand lane on a motorway. In Spain we
drive on the right, in fact as far right as possible, according to the law, and although multiple lanes exist for overtaking, a vehicle must return to the right-hand lane once the move is complete, subject to instructions from signs and signals. Weaving in and out of lanes in a traffic jam causes frustrations, largely as this impedes the flow of the lane that the vehicle is joining and can amplify delays for everybody waiting.

Going Blue in July Proper Use of Seatbelts The Director General of Traffic, Gregorio Serrano, has stated that the reform which means that all emergency vehicles will have blue lights will become effective in July. The DGT are currently studying possibilities of a provisional authorisation which would allow the change to start sooner, but as the entire process has taken years of work and
effort, a wait until July is somewhat insignificant. Currently, in Spain, only the security services use blue lights, with ambulances and fire service vehicles using flashing amber lights when responding to an emergency. This reform will put Spain in line with the European standard for emergency vehicles.
The Medical is Not as Scary as you Might Think One of the biggest stumbling blocks when it comes to renewing a driving licence appears to be the medical examination. However, that stumbling block is not necessarily the actual procedure itself, but the fear of the process. In order to alleviate some of these concerns, we took a volunteer to the Clinica La Siesta and videoed the whole process from start to finish. The video is available on the website, n332.es, and shows our volunteer, Julie, first register her details at the clinic, then go through a variety of tests, including hearing, coordination and reflex tests, a visit to the doctor, and the psychological assessment. Some of the parts of the video are speeded up, partly to preserve confidentiality, and partly so as not to bore you, but the whole process is shown. Towards the end, it shows how the clinic team even take your photograph, and take your signature, completing the forms on your behalf, so you don´t have to do anything.
La Siesta Clinic offers a “one-stop-shop” for your licence renewal, officially authorised by the DGT, they complete all the paperwork for you, carry out the test and medical examination in English, have ample free parking, and are open mornings and afternoons for convenient appointments, which can be booked by phone on 966 78 41 95, WhatsApp on 692 13 41 36, or via their website, clinicalasiesta.com, and, more great news, the entire team at the clinic speak English, so you don´t have to worry about the language barrier. The clinic is located in the La Siesta urbanisation in Torrevieja, on Calle Rossini, just off the main road which links Torrevieja with Quesada, turning right if you are coming from Torrevieja centre at the roundabout where there are two Chinese restaurants, the roundabout after Hiperber supermarket. For more details, visit their website, clinicalasiesta.com or give them a call on the numbers above.
Last week, the European Traffic Police Network carried out an intensified campaign focussing on the use of seatbelts. In Spain, the Guardia Civil were supported by their colleagues in local, regional and national police, to ensure that this life-saving fixture ws used correctly. Seatbelts are designed for one purpose only, to save lives. Statistics show that by wearing a seatbelt the probability of death when involved in a collision is halved, whereas according to the data from the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) and the Instituto Universitario de Tráfico y Seguridad Vial (INTRAS), the risk of death is cut by a staggering 77% in an overturned vehicle. However, in order for the seatbelt to be effective, it must be worn correctly, in order for it to fulfil the function it is designed for fully. The correct way to wear the seatbelt is for it to go across the torso diagonally, and across the waist, firmly secured in these positions. The top part must be on the hard part of the collarbone, halfway between the shoulder and the neck. The lower end sits against the hardness of the pelvis. The three-point seatbelt, which is fitted as standard to most modern vehicles, has an upper (thoracic) and a lower band (pelvic). Both must be snugly fitting against the body. For the seatbelt to offer maximum protection it must be on the hard parts of the body, leaning against the collarbone, halfway between the shoulder and neck at the top, and the iliac crest of the pelvis, never on the abdomen. Accessories such as cushions or other additions should not be used. Once you have pulled the seatbelt across your body
and secured the strap in the locked position, make sure that the seatbelt is not twisted at any point. If it is, undo the seatbelt and remove the twists. Once secure, pull the seatbelt so that it fits snugly against the body, with any slack being taken back at the top. If the seatbelt is not worn correctly, it can cause further problems in the event of a collision. For example, if the upper band is taken off the shoulder, it can cause a head impact with the windscreen, dashboard or seat in front. It can also produce cervical lesions. If the belt is not firm around the body it can cause the vehicle to slide under the belt, casing lower body and spinal injuries. This is often referred to as the “submarine effect”. To prevent “submarining”, the vehicle occupants must also sit in a proper position when
riding in the vehicle, with the seatbelt securely fastened as mentioned, and without having any additions such as pillows or cushions which may contribute to the reduction of effectiveness of the seatbelt. It is also important to remember the one seatbelt – one seat rule. All vehicle occupants are obliges to wear a seatbelt, both in the front and the back seats. Some vehicles only have two seatbelts in the back for example, and so that vehicle can only carry two passengers on that seat. There are other rules regarding children in cars. Primarily, children under 1.35 metres in height are not allowed to travel in the front seats and they most use an appropriate restraining system for their height and weight.

CRICKET: TON-UP BALBIRNIE KEEPS IRELAND IN HUNT FOR A PLACE IN THE WORLD CUP Andrew Balbirnie stroked a career-best century and also became the seventh Ireland batsman to complete 1,000 ODI runs as the 2009 champions defeated traditional rivals and reigning champions Scotland by 25 runs in a crucial Super Six fixture of the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2018 at the Harare Sports Club on Sunday. In front of broadcast cameras and a crowd of around 1,500, Balbirnie scored 105, his second career century, and Niall O’Brien contributed 70 in his 99th ODI as the two batsmen put on 138 runs for the third wicket before Kevin O’Brien’s 27-ball 46 runs cameo lifted Ireland to 271 for nine after they were sent in to bat. Scotland captain Kyle Coetzer (61, 70b, 7x4, 1x6) played some delightful strokes to provide his side a flying start and his departure at the score of 112 seemed to be a setback, but fighting knocks from Richie Berrington (44), Safyaan Sharif (34), Mark Watt (31) and a 10-ball cameo of 14 by Brad Wheal allowed Scotland to reach 246 in 47.4 overs. Ireland’s victory means they remain in the hunt for a place in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. They now have four points with one match against Afghanistan (on 23 March) remaining, while Scotland remain on five points with a match against the Windies (on 21 March) in hand. Zimbabwe lead the points table with five points and meet the Windies on Monday in a match which will strengthen their chances of qualifying for the World
Cup provided they beat the two-time former world champions. In the scenario of the Windies winning the match, the tournament will remain wide open and any two of the five leading sides can qualify for the ICC’s pinnacle 50-over tournament which will be held in England and Wales from 30 May to 14 July. Balbirnie exuded satisfaction after collecting his Player of the Match award. “I tried to be positive and busy at the start, quite compact, got off the mark as soon as possible and tried to rotate the strike, that’s what I tried to do throughout my innings. It certainly was not a highlights package, I had to get the nitty-gritty stuff and a lot of singles. But I come away with a hundred in a mustwin game, that’s very satisfying,” he said. “It was not that easy a pitch to get in on, so the longer I was there, the easier it was for guys like Niall and Kevin, and they got a run-a-ball or more, so I just thought I could bat as long and get a score and others can come and bat positively and that is what happened. “As a batting unit we needed to perform after Friday and we did that. We know Afghanistan, they have had an up and down tournament but they are world class players and we will have to be at the top of our game,” he added. Scotland captain Coetzer felt his side could have chased the target. “It was one of the best wickets in the tournament so far. It was a chase-able score on that surface, but we will take things out of this game and we have to
move on,” he said. Showing confidence ahead of the next game against the Windies, Coetzer said: “We believe we can win that game and we have to, we have to just make sure we turn up the game and play a good game and put the Windies under pressure.” Sent in to bat, Ireland were in some bother when Paul Stirling departed on the final delivery of the opening over and then William Porterfield failed to capitalise on a dropped catch to drag Brad Wheal’s delivery onto his stumps to leave his side at 45 for two. However, Balbirnie and Niall O’Brien repaired the damage when they put on 138 runs to equal Ireland’s third wicket record stand by Balbirnie and Ed Joyce against Zimbabwe in Hobart during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015. The partnership ended when O’Brien was run-out after a run-a-ball 70 with nine fours, while Balbirnie was the fourth batsman out after scoring 105 from 146 balls with 10 fours. Barbirnie’s first 50 runs came off 80 balls and included four fours, while his second 50 came from 60 balls with five fours. Kevin O’Brien later belted five fours and two sixes in a 27-ball 46, but no other batsman could make any worthwhile contribution as Ireland added 145 runs in the last 20 overs, including 69 in the last 10 overs on a good batting track. For Scotland, fast bowler Wheal and Safyaan Sharif took three and two wickets conceding 43 and 52 runs, respectively.
La Marina Golf Society @ Alicante Golf A strong wind, rain and a plummeting temperature was the order of the day when we met to play our annual captain versus vice-captains' match. The trophy had previously always been won by the captain's team although captain Elspeth was in a pessimistic mood before proceedings began. However, her fears proved groundless as her team swept the board with a total of 345 stableford points to the vice-captain's total of
286. Probably due to the weather, overall scoring was low and the silver award went to John Thompson with 33points and the gold award to Barry Thorogood with 29points. Nearest the pins to Vic Smith, Bill Stobo, Alan Craig and Mark Leigh. The two's pot went unclaimed, although John Milton had a 2 but had not contributed to the pot, and to complete his day he fell in a lake whilst retrieving his ball and was wet through

Pola defence. But despite all the Montesinos hard work, it was actually Bahia who had the best chance of the game which forced the Monte keeper, Dani, into an excellent double save. But on the half hour mark, Vazquinho does what he does best. A ball over the top of the defence from Guirao was chested down by the little Brazilian who volleyed the ball into the top corner of the net to open the scoring. Ten minutes later the same player, Vazquinho, gets on the end of a through ball from Maccan,

ALL ABOUT THE GOALS CD MONTESINOS 4 – 2 FC BAHIA SANTA POLA With a number of first team regulars missing, including a couple of long term injuries, CD Montesinos entertained opponents FC Bahia Santa Pola looking to retain that third spot in the group. On a cold blustery and showery day, a crowd around the 200 mark saw the home side take all three points from a game which CD Montesinos should have had sewn up at the break, yet somehow manage to let the visitors back into the game. The first half saw “Monte” playing their quick, fast flowing football which has been missing in the last few games. Up front the division´s top scorer, Vazquinho, was being a right handful for the Santa
Scotland, in their run-chase, made a brisk start when they raced to 94 in the 19th over before losing their second wicket of Calum MacLeod (21) after Matthew Cross (18) had departed at the score of 26. Boyd Rankin, who was earlier punished by Coetzer for three successive fours and then dropped him when the batsman was on 41, came back strongly for his second spell when he first disturbed the furniture behind Coetzer, then had Gregory Munsey caught smartly by Niall O’Brien and finally caught Craig Wallance off his own bowling as the Scots slumped to 122 for five, which soon became 132 for six. Richie Berrington and Sharif put up some resistance with their 51-run seventh-wicket partnership and then a late charge by Watt gave Scotland a glimmer of hope before a superb catch by wicketkeeper Niall O’Brien saw the end of Wheal, leaving Watt unbeaten in a total of 246 all out in 47.4 overs. Ranking finished with four for 63, Tim Murtagh bagged two for 51 and Simi Singh snapped up two for 33. This was Ireland’s 15th win over Scotland in 21 matches with one noresult.
rounds the Bahia keeper and slots the ball into an empty net to double the Monte lead which they held until the half time whistle. The Monte faithful expected the visitors to be swept away in the second half but nothing could have been further from the truth. Montesinos appeared to take their foot off the pedal and this allowed Bahia to push forward and once again, Dani in the Monte goal, had to be at his best. But 18 minutes into the second half Bahia deservedly pulled a goal back after sloppy defensive play from Monte. The crowd were
One of groups in the Sailing Association Mar Menor doesn't really sail - as they share the cost of running a 7 metre Spanish Artaban motorboat with an inboard Nissan marine diesel engine. now anxious as there team, who appeared to be in total control in the first 45 minutes, looked as if they had gone to sleep. Keeper Dani had to once again be at his best to keep the visitors at bay before substitute Manuel Sanchez smashed home a third goal for Montesinos in the 75th minute of the game. Once again Bahia came back into the game and from a free-kick, managed to score a second goal to make it 3-2 with 7 minutes remaining. But they say you cannot keep a good man down and in the 43rd minute of the game, Vazquinho makes it 4-2 with one of the cheekiest goals you will see at this level as he left not only the defender but also the goalkeeper on their backside, to net his 23rd
league goal of the season. The match sponsors, Peña FC DEPORTIVO GALICIA LONDON, elected the Montesinos goalkeeper DANI as their Man of the Match, ahead of hat-trick hero Vazquinho. This win keeps CD Montesinos in third place and as the division´s top scorers with 62 goals from their 24 matches played. Next week there are no matches at this level due to the Fiestas, so the next match for CD Montesinos will be on the weekend of the 24/25th of March with an away game against Torrevieja CF. Match details are not yet available but will be published ASAP Match report Eduardo Cagigao. Photos David Winder

Our venue this year for the St Patrick’s Day Trophy was Mar Menor and 39 players braved the very blustery and quite chilly conditions. The testing wind meant no 2’s so the pot will be rolled over to Captain’s Day. Apart from a broken down buggy and a flat tyre the day went quite smoothly. Thanks again to all at Paddy’s Point for another excellent meal which was greatly appreciated by us all. Next month is the big one - Captain’s Day - at El Valle on 11th April. On a lovely day we set off from El Raso to Font De Llop to play and a new format for this year of team game, yellow ball and best three scores from each group to count for total score. It took a bit of explaining how to mark the cards, but we got there in the end. Some groups managing to keep the yellow ball for the full 18 holes! As usual the course was in good condition and the expected wind stayed away. Results for this outing: points Winning team of Peter List, John Goulder, Jeff Ellis and Buck Taylor with 148 points. Runners up with 121 points were Eric Owens, Dave Freeman, Phil Harris and John Evans. Nearest the pins on par 3’s were Andy Trefry, Buck Taylor, Dave Freeman x2 and Peter List. Football card winners: Alex Bolton and Alan Gifford. Thanks to Steve and his staff at the Med Bar and bistro, our next outing is at Hacienda Rilquelme on 27/3/18. EUROGOLF San Miguel Golf Society at Alicante Golf GREENSOMES It's not a course we play on a regular basis but it is a popular one with most of the
members. Not being regular visitors, the last 15 minutes of the hour's drive never fail to bring a touch of mystery and excitement to some poor, lost soul whose satnav, to coin a phrase, mightn't be quite up to par! With just the one late arrival, we were soon at our full complement of 5 guests and 31 members doing battle in the Stableford competition round this Seve Ballesteros course tidily consisting of 6 par 3's, 6 par 4's and 6 par 5's. Two knock-out matchplay games were also taking place, one singles and one doubles. In the gold division Ivan Hanak carded his best round for some time coming in with a magnificent 42 points pushing John Osborne with 39 points into second place...a couple of members actually reported that they'd seen Ivan smiling after his round, though it's probably “fake news!”
The “battle of the Birtwistles” took place in the bronze category with Phil once again showing his chivalrous nature with a 3 putt here & there which JUST let Marg pip him by FIVE points......that story could be wearing a bit thin! ..very well done, dear!! Your Week in Sport over the form of the opening pair and top order. Stuart Broad might be about to embark on a life as first change, breaking up a decade long partnership of taking the new ball with Jimmy Anderson. I have a feeling telling me this is not going to be a good Test series for England, which probably means we’ll win each match. Roger Federer was back in action this week, in the Indian Wells tournament in, well, Indian Wells. The veteran 68-year-old continued to confound his age by getting all the way to the final against Juan Del Potro,

Hang on, this table here says England finished 5th in the 2018 Six Nations. 5th! That’s only one better than Italy and we still can’t really call them a rugby playing nation. Weren’t England suppose to be the greatest side in the Northern Hemisphere on a clear path to bringing down the All Blacks and the Wallabies in the next World Cup? It really hasn’t been a good week for Eddie Jones, the Head Coach, who was caught making slightly uncomplimentary remarks about Wales and Ireland at some kind of sponsors bash. Cracking idea that Eddie, give Ireland more fuel to play England on St Patrick’s Day when a victory would give them the Grand Slam. And it worked, Ireland won. Scotland won too, against Italy, and Wales beat France to move into second place meaning all the results that
could leave England second bottom came in. Unlike my Cheltenham tips last week, eh? Everytime I seem to mention cyclist Mark Cavendish it is because he has had some kind of spectacular crash. Still, better than him being linked to being a drugs cheat, right? Cav somehow escaped with only a broken rib having spectacularly crashed in the Milan-San Remo race. Luck is not following Cavendish around at the moment. England head into the Test Series against New Zealand this week in the shadow of one of their greatest batsmen ever retiring. Kevin Pieterson has finally called time on his nomadic T20 life, putting his bat back in the bag one last time. KP wasn’t always everybody’s cup of tea, probably because he was a bit of a maverick, but he certainly won England some cricket matches. Even now, he’d do a very decent job in the current middle order. Joe Root hit a ton in the warm up match but, as ever, there are concerns

a mere 51 years R-Fed’s junior. Before the final, Federer was asked whether he’d have a crack at the 2020 Olympics in a bid to claim the one thing he has never won, a gold medal. Federer replied, “2020 is a long way away, so if I am still playing sure I’ll have a go. But don’t forget, I will be 70 by then”. Admittedly, he might not have said that last bit. Toodles.

“I’m not happy. There was a lack of personality, a lack of class, and a lack of desire”. A Manchester United fan following their exit to Sevilla in the Champions League during the
week? The same Manchester United fan having watched United huff and puff to a victory over Brighton and Hove Albion in the FA Cup Quarter Final on Saturday night? No, no. United fans are too busy moaning to the FA about Tottenham having an “unfair” advantage playing the FA Cup Semi Final at Wembley. That quote comes from the manager who is paid handsomely to recruit character, teach class and motivate them to have more desire than a cold teapot. Yes, Jose is calling out his players in public once more. Not content with dropping Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez, Jose called his players “scared” in the postmatch press conference. I don’t think they are scared Jose, I think they have just realised that you are yesterday’s man. United beat Brighton 2-0 with a goal late in each half from a rare attack in each half. Watching United is not fun, not fun at all.
I’ll tell you what is fun, though. Watching that Jose reject Mohamed Salah. He scored four for Liverpool against Watford in a 5-0 thrashing at Anfield. Yes, yes I know United are ahead of Liverpool in the league but seriously, who would you rather watch if you were being neutral. Liverpool have scored 4 in a game several times this season, 5 at least twice and 7 twice as well. United
don’t even get that many shots in on target during a whole match. Watford could tell what kind of evening it was going to be when Miguel Britos slipped over in the snow like a toddler not quite accustomed to the slippery conditions and Salah scored after three minutes. And don’t forget folks, this is Watford in March. They don’t launch a comeback. Chelsea’s performance at Barcelona makes a lot more sense now as they were clearly making sure they had enough gas in the tank to beat Leicester City in extra time. Alvaro Morata will now fully understand why he was on the bench in the Camp Nou as he started at the King Power and put Chelsea ahead, only to see Jamie Vardy equalise. It was Pedro who scored the goal that takes Chelsea back to Wembley once again. Swansea City could have treated their FA Cup Quarter Final with Tottenham Hotspur as a bit of fun,
but instead they decided to give Spurs a bye. Christian Eriksen glided around the pitch like a man delighted to see snow in the air and pretty much beat the opposition on his own. Tottenham are facing several weeks without Harry Kane, but that did not matter as they eased to a 3-0 win. Tottenham’s reward is United at home, sorry Wembley, in the semifinal. Over in the Premier League, Sham Allarfarce had suggested that Cenk Tosun was taking time to adjust to the weather in England hence him not being picked from the word go following his arrival from Besiktas. Really, Sam? Really? On Saturday Tosun scored twice in a blizzard in Stoke which, as well all know, is the ultimate test for a continental footballer to prove himself “adapted” to the English conditions. What is it with Everton managers not backing the strikers who can score goals? Koeman was the same with Oumar Niasse. And he got sacked. Everton fans can dream of the same fate for Allardyce, I suppose. As for Stoke City? They look destined for the drop (as I think I said before the season started). Charlie Adam was on TV a little while ago talking about how is “mentally strong” enough for a proper relegation fight. Since that appearance, Adam has missed a last minute penalty costing his side three points and been sent off in the first half leaving his side down to ten for an hour. Granted, the amount of actual running around Adam does nowadays means most of the time Stoke are playing with ten, but his red card on Saturday for hitting Rooney late meant Paul Lambert chose to withdraw Shaqiri, the one player that could actually keep Stoke in the league. Mark Hughes is still Stoke through and through, however, and has come up with a novel way to keep his former club in the Premier League. He has taken over at Southampton which many suggest means Stoke’s chances of survival have improved tenfold. Plus, Sparky gets to keep using his red and white tie which is a bonus for everyone. No matter how much Southampton tried to disguise
CLAPTON’S GOLF SOCIETY - ALTOREAL GOLF Here we are at one of the society’s favourite courses. With a 10.00 am tee-off 18 members set off from Quesada at 8.15 am giving everybody time on arrival for coffee and a chance to go on the range if they wished. The course is in the midst of some changes so it was not in its usual immaculate condition but it was still a great day. The weather was chilly to start but got better as the day went on and there were some good scores for all the players. Once everyone had completed the course we headed back to The Club in Quesada where once again we were treated to a splendid buffet
which everybody enjoyed and our thanks to the new owner Ian and his staff. The overall winner, Iain Ralph, fresh out from a very chilly England having played only three games in the last three months played very well in the glorious temperature of 17 degrees. Congratulations Iain. The full results are as follows: Overall Winner: Iain Ralph - 37 points Gold Winner: Brent Hollings - 36 points Gold Runner Up: Tony Stead - 34 points Silver Winner: John Dodds - 35 points Silver Runner Up: Rick Drake - 32
points Best Front Nine: Andy Trefry - 18 points on c/b Best Back Nine: Gary Strowger 18 points Nearest the Pins: 5th hole - John Dodds; 8th hole - Brian Simister: and 17th hole - Cameron Stewart. Twos: This was shared between Iain Ralph, Brent Hollings and Gary Strowger. Our next match on the 20th April will be at Vistabella – anyone interested in joining us as a member or guest please contact Kev Williams on 619 725 609 or via email at kevsta01@gmail.com.
themselves in green and black against the League One giant killers you could tell it was them as soon as they started playing. Mind you, you could also argue that they looked a little bit like Stoke. Wigan dominated the first half but failed to score. Of course that meant that Southampton would win the second half, which they did, and Mark Hughes gets to lead his new side out against Chelsea at Wembley next month. The biggest question of the weekend surrounds Alan Pardew. How on earth was he still in the dugout for the game with Bournemouth considering the board had “crisis talks” with him last Monday? Well, if they’ve made it a weekly review there is no way on earth he can walk out of the next meeting without a P45. WBA led 1-0 with 13 minutes to go and there was very loose talk of the relegation escape starting. 13 minutes later, WBA had lost 2-1 and any glimpse of staying up was gone (not that it was really ever there). Pardew did look like a broken man in his post-match conversation and, in fairness, his players did actually try this week. Still, trying isn’t enough so ta-ra Pards! Wilf Zaha was back in action for Crystal Palace against Huddersfield Town and Palace won - there must be some kind of link. Roy Hodgson’s men won 2-0 and must have confidence in the fact that
Southampton, Stoke and maybe even West Ham are worse than them and will continue to prove this over the remaining matches. As for West Ham United, now just one place of the relegation zone, they’ve been in Miami “training”. The Hammers fans will have been delighted to see Andy Carroll on the beach, Patrice Evra by the pool and Joe Hart fumbling his non-alcoholic (we’re sure) cocktails. Back in Blighty, it was “leaked” that Gold & Sullivan would like to bring Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema to the Athletic Stadium next season for £53m. It must be time to renew those season tickets. And so we start another international break. As I type this, I could not actually tell you who England are playing in the next ten days. But, as I am the consummate professional I checked, and Gareth Southgate is sending his boys into battle against the Netherlands and Italy. Good to see England playing teams that didn’t qualify for the World Cup so they can feel good about themselves. Southgate dropped Chris Smalling, Gary Cahill and Danny Drinkwater but kept Jake Livermore and Danny Welbeck in the squad meaning, as ever, the England manager does not have a clue. Mind you, he hasn’t got a lot to work with these days. Just don’t pick Joe Hart, please.
