SUSPECTED PESTICIDE POISONING PUTS TEENAGER ON LIFE SUPPORT A British teenager was left in a coma on family holiday in Orihuela Costa after it is believed he was poisoned by cockroach pesticide. Callum Forster, 17, and his stepdad Jamie Hadland, 24, were both struck down after the family enjoyed a night out. The family had been to a bar after meeting friends in Villamartin, where the family have been staying with Callum’s grandma Barbara Burks who lives here. Shortly after getting home Jamie started feeling really strange. Then Callum, who is hoping to start work as an electrical apprentice this September, became ill and was shaking uncontrollably before going into a fit. He had several seizures before the ambulance arrived. The pair were both put into intensive care on Friday, 20th July. They were heavily sedated to avoid seizures, and by the Monday Jamie was well enough to be discharged.

However, Callum remains seriously ill, with tests showing both men had strong pesticide in their bloodstreams. It is not known how they came to swallow the poison. Callum has now been taken off life support but remains on the critical ward. Callum’s mum told an English newspaper: “It's just been an absolute nightmare. It's one step forwards and two steps back. Callum doesn't know what's going on and he's in a foreign hospital. The doctors and nurses have been brilliant and he couldn't be in a better hospital. "However, he is very confused and is struggling to answer questions, we don't know what impact the seizures have had on him yet. "We've been told the recovery could take weeks or months. We just have no idea." The family, from Leeds, West Yorks., are being helped by the British Embassy and the cause of the illness is

being investigated. Friends of the family have launched a crowdfunding appeal which has so far raised more than £2,600. Jayne Rapier, who set up the page, wrote: 'We have put this page together to ask all their friends and family to help raise funds to make this ordeal a little easier and support them and enable them to stay with Callum until he is well enough to come home. 'Everyone that knows the family know how great they all are and they have had a lot of positive vibes and kind words from all these people in the last few days, I hope we can continue to support them by showing our love with a little fundraising.' Callum’s Mum Helen Forster, 36, and younger brother Brandon, 12 along with Step-Dad Jamie, are staying in Spain to be at Callum’s side and will stay until he is well enough to travel home.

Habaneras round up

Disclaimer

The international habaneras competition might be over but it is now time to review how it went this year. It was the 64th event celebrating the choral singing that links Spain with Cuba and the general impression is that it provided good entertainment again this year. For the purposes of transparency, the vice president of the Habaneras board announced the exact marks awarded by the judges. The choir that won first prize, The University of Philippines Singing Ambassadors, received 94.1 points against those in second place, The Girl’s Choir, who obtained 89.8. The third place Columbian choir were even closer to their second place rivals with a total score of 88.8. The competition received plenty of media attention. Live coverage through the internet allowed 4,000 connections with 900 occurring simultaneously on 24th and 28th July. Connections were made most frequently by people in Spain. However, the contest was also followed live by people in Germany, the UK,

Colombia, Argentina, The Philippines, Ukraine and Indonesia. The competition has also enabled links to be made with different embassies across the world including the Philippines, Serbia, Belarus and Indonesia. Links have been established too with the media in Latin America, Ukraine, the Philippines, Romania, Asturias and Murcia. In 2019 local elections will run. Those organising the competition this year are keen to ensure that arrangements and management of the 65th competition is able to go ahead smoothly with any transfer of responsibility. It is expected that the event will incorporate four or five days of competition alongside two or three days of exhibitions and celebrations. The organisers also paused to thank those who have helped to manage the event this year and reinforced the importance of this event, which brings together some of the best choirs in the world and puts Torrevieja on the map. Watch where you walk! That’s the message that the residents of La Mata are giving out to anyone thinking of taking a quick stroll down La Mata beach front. The walkway of wooden slats has gradually eroded over the years to become a rather hazardous obstacle course. The walkway runs parallel to the sea from the Plaza de Encarnación Puchol but overtime many of the planks have become dislodged and walking on them has become a risky business. Until now the solution has been patching up the odd plank and replacing small sections. However,

the reality is that the whole walkway needs replacing and the budget isn’t available to allow this to happen. Anger at the state of the planks has spilled out into protests, including some unofficial roadblocks. The main protesting group has been La Mata’s independence organisation Plataforma Independiente de La Mata (PIM). They are currently collecting signatures to present to the Costa management group about the state of the walkway. Suzanne O’Connell

BITE SIZE Coco’s owners fined NEWS: There’s plenty of notice being given for the third International Tapas Day which will take place on 29th September. The day will last from 12pm until 4.30pm and from 7.30pm until 11pm. The idea is to draw attention to the Spanish tapas tradition, particularly amongst foreigners but also local people too. ‘It will be a special Saturday,’ explained the councillor Manuela Osuna, ‘during which people can get to know our delicious food and the tapas tradition.’ The council would like different local bars and restaurants to get on board and to ensure that information about the day is given as wide a publicity as possible. ‘We want to provide a festival image and ensure a similar success as we have at other events,’ explained the councillor. Any establishment that is interested in taking part in the day can contact the council directly on comercio@torrevieja.eu until 6th September, completing a form that is available. They must also indicate what tapas they will be offering on 29th September. The tapas and drink must be sold at a price of €2.50 and there must be a minimum choice of two tapas.

On the other side were those who sympathised with her firm line on ensuring that the animal was chipped before being allowed out of the shelter.

The first fine presented to Coco’s owners is for failing to comply with the requirement that animals are identified through a microchip from six months old. The second fine is supported by a report from the Guardia Civil in which it was noted that the dog was causing difficulties amongst traffic following the owners’ failure to prevent it from escaping. If the owners pay the fines on time then they will only have to pay 60 percent of the total amount, reducing the cost of losing their animal to €1,200. Perhaps a warning to everyone to make sure you comply with the law if you own a pet. Suzanne O’Connell

The owners of the dog ‘Coco’ who ran away causing controversy in March, have now received a fine of €2,000. The fine has been issued by the Local Police for the failure of Coco’s owners to have the dog micro chipped and the fact that it was allowed to escape and put traffic at risk. It was one of the top stories in March this year. The Yorkshire terrier ‘Coco’ had escaped from its owners in Torrevieja to be picked up by the Local Police. Once found, the owners requested the dog’s return from Torrevieja’s animal shelter. There was just one problem. The owners had already returned to León where they lived and Councillor Carmen Morate insisted that the dog be returned to them and not a third party. The concerns were that the little dog had been found in a dishevelled state running between traffic and, added to its apparent poor state of health, it had no chip to identify it. The owners, however, were furious at the demand that they return to the town themselves to collect the animal and the allegations between the owners and councillor began. Strong comments were made on social media and further publicity was given to the case when a heated telephone conversation between the owners and the councillor had been recorded and published. In this, the councillor was heard to give an ultimatum to the owners that she would only talk to them about the dog’s release if they removed some ‘s**t’ from Facebook. Councillor Morate apologised later for her outburst. The story caused a storm on both

Duty free not so cheap Airport duty-free shopping is up to 41 percent more expensive than buying the same goods online, according to Spanish price comparison website Idealo.es. Duty free goods are sold free of national tax for passengers travelling to or from destinations outside the European Union, and many believe they are picking up a bargain. But it could be that it is no cheaper than buying the items outside the airport – in fact, they could even be more expensive. One of the most frequently-purchased duty-free goods, perfume, is 41 percent cheaper online for men and 28 percent cheaper bought via the internet for women, Idealo says.

Alcohol, another duty-free staple, averages 9 percent more expensive bought airside in the case of sparkling wines and can be as much as 16 percent more than when bought online. Spirits and liqueurs are also often cheaper when purchased via the internet – the latter by 10 percent and the former, at least in the case of whisky, by 16 percent. The only alcoholic drinks found to be cheaper in the duty free than online are popular brands of vodka, rum and gin – by around 5 percent, but largely because airside purchases mean shoppers save on delivery expenses.

event itself which places Torrevieja on the map in terms of tennis. The competition will also contribute to the charity collection of food for the needy. It is expected that 350 sports people will take part altogether, organised according to different age categories including infant, junior, adult and veteran. The veteran category will be split further into sections for men over 35, 45, 55, those over 60 and 70 years old and women over 35 and 50. The prizes include €3,200 in cash and €2,000 worth of sporting materials for the finalists in each category. The cost of registering for the competition is €18 for the youngest children and €20 for the remainder. The tournament began on 4th August and is expected to attract people from far and wide as success here can contribute to overall rankings within the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation.

Loggerhead turtle rescue On Wednesday 1st August a loggerhead turtle was rescued a mile from the mouth of the International Marina. The turtle was spotted by two children floating in the sea close to shore and evidently looking weak. It is believed that the turtle was between 4 and 5 years old. The children were travelling in a recreational fishing boat and the adults knew the protocol to apply in these cases. They called 112 and then jumped into the sea to rescue the turtle, bringing it into the boat where it was wrapped in a wet towel. The turtle has now been taken to the ARCA of the Oceanografic in Valencia. It is believed to be unwell as it is covered in epibionts which are organisms that live on top of others. However, it does now have a chance of survival in the special facilities that exist there.

Buses to the Auditorium It has been agreed that buses will run to the International Auditorium on those days when there are performances or other activities. The councillor for transport, Javier Manzanares, has announced that he is going to establish a bus route which will extend from line C. The bus will run every 25 minutes and will include the same stops as it does now with the addition of the Auditorium. This includes the Eras de la Sal, Fontana, the BP petrol station on the Cortes Valenciana and now the Auditorium itself. The exact times and days will be published prior to the events. ‘We’ve been asked by many people for this to be established,’ explained Councillor Manzanares. The buses will run from one hour before the event to one hour after it finishes. Helping the young, disabled get a job The ONCE Foundation are a national lottery and some of the money raised goes towards helping the disabled, specifically those who are blind or have a visual impairment. On 3rd August they held some workshops in Torrevieja to assist young people with disabilities to get a job. The workshops were delivered as part of a roadshow that will travel to 78 other Spanish locations over the next three months. Unemployment amongst the disabled in Spain currently stands at 28.6% which is 9.1 points above that of the rest of the population. The title of the workshops was ‘Never give up’ and they were targeted at people with a disability classed at 33%.

It’s perhaps a slightly unusual holiday activity. However, the trips to see how the salt mining industry works in Torrevieja are proving to be very popular. So far this year, 2,757 people have visited the salt works during the first 14 days that it’s been opened. The first train taking visitors around key sites in the

salt trail set off on 16th July with only two passengers. Since then its popularity has grown. Now preparations are being made for the new season to ensure that there is continued interest in this aspect of Torrevieja. Councillor Fanny Serrano has already been discussing which national fairs

should be used to spread the word about Torrevieja’s salt industry and the different types of tourism that it offers. Councillor Serrano has already seen how a similar plant in France is managing and expanding the tourist side to its industry. The branch in the Camargue is also run by the

Internet child pornography ring caught A total of nineteen people have been arrested in Spain by the National Police for the distribution of child pornography using WhatsApp. The images included children of less than a year old up to eight years old and depicted acts of extreme brutality. The arrests were coordinated by Interpol and Europol as part of an international operation. They identified 14 groups who were sending instant messages containing the paedophile content. The individuals in the ring lived in different parts of Spain and one of those detained was from Torrevieja. Altogether some 2,400 images have been archived. The accused members of the organisation used specialised software to disguise their activities. WhatsApp was the principle messaging service used and through this social media huge quantities of images were sent. Altogether it is believed that the investigators discovered 14 chats and 58 users sharing the materials. It is believed that the ring was not confined to Spain but had links to seven other countries including more in Europe and America.

Police in the different countries are now working together to identify more of those involved. Those circulating the materials in Spain included individuals from Oviedo, Barcelona, Burgos, Córdoba, Granada, Palma de Mallorca, Jaén, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, León, Madrid, Murcia, Santander, Tarragona, Teruel, Valencia, Valladolid as well as Torrevieja. The vast spread of criminals meant that 18 different courts had to be involved in granting permission to search and seize a whole range of hardware and software. The raids and arrests had to be conducted simultaneously across each of these regions. Materials taken by the police included eleven laptops, 23 mobile telephones, four tablets, eleven hard drives, seven pendrives and five large capacity memory cards. Now special officers and professional agencies are analysing the large amount of material, consisting of 16 terabytes in total. They have also had to work around the sophisticated encryption programmes and content removal software to secure convictions and further investigate the gang. Suzanne O’Connell

Salins group and has been open to the public for ten years attracting more than 163,000 visitors. During this time they have expanded their tourist provision and now even offer their own line of cosmetics. The next stage is to consider how some of these activities might be applied in Torrevieja.

For example, it is proposed that the Centro de Interpretación Salinera could be used to sell souvenirs. Some work will need to be done to the centre such as the updating of electrical wiring and provision of toilets. However, it does look as though there is a bright future for salt tourism in Torrevieja too.

Gang of thieves arrested A gang of house thieves has been arrested by the National Police in Torrevieja and Malaga. The thieves used the ‘slipping’ method to break in through the door of targeted houses. Three of the ten arrested were women who were specialists in gaining entrance through slipping materials, such as plastic cut from bottles or sections of tin cans, between the door and the frame to force the lock. Those detained had broken into a number of houses in Alicante, Murcia, Almería and Valladolid. The gang, of Croatian nationality, had a base in Torrevieja but travelled around the country to commit their crimes. The women were responsible for forcing the lock whilst the men stood guard. Investigations into the gang began in April after they committed a robbery in Cartagena. The police became suspicious of the gang and identified that they came

from Torrevieja from where they travelled to other provinces across Spain. They would select an area and then use several cars which were left around the city for different gang members to use. This made it more difficult to trace those committing the crimes. The thieves were on the look out for doors that were less well-secured and which perhaps did not have all the locks and bolts in place. Seven members of the gang were arrested in Torrevieja where two searches were carried out and four vehicles were seized. At the same time, in Malaga, three more people were arrested just after they had committed a robbery. Following the arrest of the gang members a number of valuable items were retrieved including a large amount of jewellery stolen from different houses. The police will now do their best to track the legitimate owners and return their goods.

Making breastfeeding a priority Torrevieja hospital has added their voice to those emphasising the important role of breastfeeding in securing a healthy infancy. It’s World Breastfeeding Week and Torrevieja Salud reminds us that they have a multidisciplinary team who are briefed to help support mothers before and after they leave hospital. This includes providing advice, promoting facilities in which to breastfeed, health education during pregnancy and up to the end of baby’s first year. With this proactive approach to encouraging mothers to breastfeed, it has been announced that 85% of mothers leaving the hospital are breastfeeding rather than bottle feeding their babies.

Prize winning barber from Torrevieja On Sunday 29th July a national barbers’ championship was held in Port Sagunto in Valencia. The ‘Battle of the Barbers’ is a national competition which attracts people from across Spain each year. There are several different categories in the competition including one called ‘only comb and scissors’. This is not one of the most popular of the categories as it limits the equipment that the barber can use. This year ten barbers participated in this part of the competition and in third place was Julen Pérez from Torrevieja. The first prize winner was in fact a European and Spanish champion and the level was particularly high. Suzanne O’Connell

There are dozens of beautiful domestic cats and kittens in the shelter waiting for adoption but not enough people are coming forward to adopt them. ‘We do everything we can to care for the cats and kittens,’ says Councillor Carmen Morate, ‘but shelter life can be distressing for them so we really do need more people to come forward and adopt now.’ Most of the adult cats were pets but because of different circumstances they have ended up in the shelter. Many crave human attention and anyone taking them home would be rewarded with an affectionate pet. Alongside the adult cats there are many kittens that are desperate for a home. It’s not only homes that are needed. The shelter also urgently requires volunteers to help care for the cats whilst they are waiting. They need volunteers to clean the cat area and feed them. They also need someone to spend time with them, keeping them

killed in car crash

The accident happened at 4pm on August 3rd when the motorbike collided with a car at the junction of calle Santa Teresa de Jesús and Calderón de la Barca on the Altos de la Bahía urbanisation. At the moment the cause of the accident is unknown. However, witnesses suggest that the Swedish driver didn’t stop at the junction. The motorcyclist, aged 32, was a wellknown and experienced motorcyclist. There was little chance of survival of the motorcyclist who died almost on impact and had been thrown against the wall of a house nearby. It is believed that the car involved in the accident included a family on their way to the beach at the time. A SAMU ambulance attended the scene but there was little they could do and only pronounced the young man dead. An investigation has been opened into the exact causes of the accident and the body was removed from the scene. Suzanne O’Connell

Rotary Club helps Torrevieja celebrates Ukranian children the Spanish language

The Rotary Club of Torrevieja has put in a request for donations to help 13 children who are victims of the troubles in Eastern Ukraine. The children have been brought by the club to Torrevieja to have a holiday away from the problems in their homeland. The children have all lost close family members in the conflict or come from families who are struggling to survive without basic necessities. They were selected and brought to Torrevieja in conjunction with ‘Global

Christian Support’. Now, during their stay in Torrevieja, they have been given opportunities to enjoy different activities and to be children. The children originate from Kramatorsk, Donetsk, Slavyansk and Avdeevka and are all between the ages of three and 11. Their families are without the basic necessities and the Rotary Club has also been asking for support in providing them with these basics for when they return to their home country. Suzanne O’Connell

The mayor of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón, attended the closing ceremony of the Annual Meeting of Directors of the Cervantes Institute. The Cervantes Institute is the organisation responsible for the publicising and protection of Spanish language and culture. The conference had been held in Valencia for the first time and included 70 representatives who were there to discuss the next steps in ensuring that Spanish culture, literature and language continues

to hold a strong place in the world. Discussions have centred around the digital agenda, the use of libraries, the visibility of creative women and cultural consumption. In particular it has been important for Torrevieja to promote the habaneras as a method of transmitting and promoting Spanish. José Manuel Dolón, has reinforced with the Cervantes institute the value that the town hall places on culture and language and wishes to maintain a working

agreement with them. There was some doubt about this as, it is claimed, some previous commitments had not been fully realised by the town. The habaneras competition is a particularly good way of promoting Spanish as it involves choirs singing in the Spanish language and some of these spend time in their own native countries attending language schools and lessons to improve their speaking. Stingray rescued in La Mata

rescue were the town’s Local Police who provided the boat as well as a jet ski. The stingray was transported using a stretcher that is normally reserved for people. Between the two local police officers and volunteers from Oddisey diving shop, the huge fish was placed on the stretcher and taken out about three miles to sea. The concern is that it had some problem that brought it into

the shore in the first place. However, once taken out to sea it seemed to be quite happy to be released and disappeared. Another possibility is that it had been caught up in fishing nets and then released. Whether or not the stingray will have survived its ordeal, we’ll never know. At least it has had a second chance. Suzanne O’Connell

A stingray measuring two metres was rescued on La Mata beach on 28th July. The stingray was spotted around two metres off the shore and its presence came as something of a surprise to those sunbathing and swimming there. It was soon reported by onlookers and the town’s marine biologist, Juan Antonio Pujol, was called in to coordinate the operation to rescue it and take it back out to sea. The operation began at 11.30am near to the Chiringuito Juanito. The stingray was a large one measuring around two metres from wing to wing without counting the tail. Assisting with the

PAH resists eviction Plaza de Toros renovation The Guardia Civil were called in to evict a man who has been living in a house in Emilia Pardo Bazán Street since 2016. The order was made by the regional government following a judicial ruling. However, not everyone was in agreement with the ruling and the anti-eviction group PAH (Plataforma Antidesahucios) were there to try and prevent it. The argument against his removal is that the block of flats which he occupied has around 25 empty flats out of forty altogether. It is claimed that the houses had been designated when first built as social housing for young people. However, high market prices meant that this original intention was superseded by private promotion. PAH claim that since it was built in 2008 the block has averaged an occupation of ten flats only and many of the properties have been vandalised in the meantime. The man removed isn’t the only illegal occupant

of the properties which, he claimed in a statement, ‘is because we have exhausted all other options in our requests for social housing.’ The man claimed that whilst living in the apartment during the last 26 months he has made a formal application to rent it four times. Those responsible for the eviction claim that his occupation is preventing the legal housing of families who fulfil all the criteria to receive social housing. PAH delayed the eviction of the man for almost an hour and a half by sitting on the staircase leading up to the flat. They were finally forced to move by the Guardia Civil, after some scuffles. Suzanne O’Connell

steams ahead The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, has given an update on the progress made on the development of the old Bullring. The iconic structure is being made into a multipurpose space, which should be completed in October. The Mayor said that the works "are advancing at a good pace and they are fulfilling the completion times, so if there are no problems it will be finished on time". Also, the Mayor highlighted the meeting held recently with Orihuela Sin Barreras, which was aimed to ensure that accessibility for all was possible at the new venue, particularly as it will host different celebrations and events and events. The works, which have been ongoing for several months, have transformed the 30 year-old ruins into a community space that is “full of light and has an open square for pedestrians, is useable by all and has improved the neighbourhood from one of dirt and debris to provide a facility that will only add value,” said Bascuñana. The programme of work had to be modified as a result of the partial demolition that had to be made to the upper ring, which was in very poor condition. However, as the work progressed the specialist team noticed several features and opportunities not realised in the initial plans that would benefit the integrity and design of the finished project or the surrounding environment. The improvements proposed have now been reviewed and agreed by the

facility management and the contractor. One of the main changes is to the lighting proposed for the semicircular grilles, the budget for which will now be spent on outdoor lighting "which is more efficient for the whole scheme, since the bulbs originally planned for the project were very austere and of low efficiency for the distribution of light, " explained the Mayor. Therefore, the forecast for the final cost of the project for the bullring will have a budget higher than the initial estimate, at around 200,000 euros, to cover both the modified plans and the complementary works that will still have to be processed by the contractors before they can be undertaken. Mayor Bascuñana insisted

that both the "facility management and the contractor have confirmed that, despite these new elements in construction, the completion period of the work will not change and it is estimated that by the end of October the building will be complete.” The Mayor concluded his update by discussing some of the elements that have been finished in recent weeks such as the hydraulic floor, drinking fountains, and even the area of the bullpens, which was not planned to be maintained, "but due to its peculiarity and its unique structure, with horns marked on the roof, it has finally been decided to keep the feature by reinforcing the upper part".

Summer fun on the coast

The councillor for Festivities, Mariola Rocamora, has presented the first year of ¡Orihuela, mar y música !, a program of concerts and children's activities that will take place every Saturday in August in Orihuela Costa. "It is a broad program for all audiences in which music is the protagonist and in which we offer concerts and free activities during every weekend," said the councillor. This Saturday, 11th August, it will be the adultd turn to be entertained with concert by the pianist Toby Jacobs, at 11.00pm in the same location, Avenida de las Adelfas, in the green area next to the Marina. The program will continue on Saturday, 18th August with a performance by the Kassia Group, "they will perform songs from the 80s and 90s that everyone knows and can sing along to". This concert will begin at 11.00pm in Avenida de la Playa and the Paseo del Mar in La Zenia. Finally, the last concert will be

on Saturday, 25th August and is an ABBA tribute, it will begin at 11.00pm and will take place in Calle de las Orquídeas, on the esplanade at Playa Flamenca. Councillor Rocamora explained that it is the first time that "we are encouraging musical activities during the summer on our coast, offering a program throughout the month of August, taking advantage of the large number of visitors and tourists to our beaches." Also the Councillor invited "all the Oriolans and neighbours of the Vega Baja to come to our coast to enjoy Orihuela, the sea and music."

Former expat councillor Local authorities act to curb holiday for the Coast faces jail rentals in Spain The anti-Corruption Prosecutor is asking for a three-year sentence for Martina Scheurer over Orihuela Costa Beach Bar Contract Scandal. The excouncillor for Beaches from the Green Party faces three-year sentence if found guilty of charges regarding the awarding of the beach bar contract on the Orihuela Costa to Chiringuitos del

Sol in 2013. The anti-corruption prosecution office has asked for a year and nine months for prevarication, and another year and nine months for allegedly revealing inside and privileged information. As well as this, the prosecutor has also asked that the ex-

councillor is barred from occupying a public position for 10 years. Scheurer, who is a German national, was arrested in June last year. Manager of Chiringuitos del Sol, Thomas Herteux, also a German national, will also stand trial. He is believed to have committed a crime of prevarication as well, for which the prosecution is asking for a year and nine months in prison, and another four years for insider trading. Despite the pending trial due to start shortly, Chiringuitos del Sol still runs the beach bars on the Coast, and are doing a very good job, according to many. Of the six companies that submitted an offer on the tender for the beach bars contract last year, the council agreed that Chiringuitos del Sol had presented the best one. Luisa Boné, PP councillor for Beaches has said that the pending court case does not affect the current contract, however, after the sentence has been given by the judge presiding the case, this may have to be looked at again depending on the outcome. In an urgent press conference yesterday, Boné said that Chiringuitos has been awarded the contract, which will run for four years and end in 2021. The beach bars, hammocks and other beach services are now up and running once again.

The tourism boom and the sharing economy have created an explosive cocktail in Spain’s real estate market. Holiday rentals have become a lucrative business that is proliferating in the centres of the most popular cities, steadily pushing out the permanent residents. Renting a home in the downtown area of some of Spain’s main cities now costs between 10 percent and 15 percent more than it did just a year ago, according to the popular real estate website Idealista. And online platforms like Airbnb, Homeaway or Booking are helping attract demand and raise prices. Now, local governments are stepping in with a series of measures aimed at regulating the sector and containing these soaring prices. Ultimately, the goal is to prevent city centres from becoming tourist theme parks where the locals cannot afford to live. VALENCIA. The regional government has given itself a new tourism law that only makes provisions for new holiday rental units if owners can produce a compatibility report that is issued by local governments. This effectively leaves regulation in the hands of local councils. In the city of Valencia, where there are an estimated 5,000 tourist apartments, the

city must certify that the property is located on the ground floor or one of the lower floors of the building; any other applications will be rejected. BARCELONA. Ada Colau became the mayor of Barcelona after being a high-profile housing activist with a group called Platform of Mortgage Victims (PAH). Colau ran on a platform that promised to make housing a priority of the local government. But despite a stream of pioneering measures, evictions continue to take place and the rental bubble, partly fuelled by pressure from tourism, has proven intractable. This inability to keep her promises has drawn criticism from the opposition. Even before Colau’s election, Barcelona had already stopped granting licenses for holiday rental homes. The illegal market, however, is a thriving business. The city has managed to shut down nearly 2,400 unlicensed tourist apartments and forced online sites like Airbnb to pull many of its ads for unlicensed apartments. The Special Plan for Tourist Accommodation is pushing hotels to the outskirts, and banning the use of residential buildings for visitor accommodation. MADRID. Local authorities have just recently approved a special plan regulating tourist accommodation. The plan will not go into effect until early next year, but it reflects many of the proposals

made earlier by the government of Mayor Manuela Carmena. These include forcing holiday rentals in the area comprised within the M-30 ring road (referred to as the “central almond” of Madrid) to have their own independent building entrance, as use of the residents’ entrance will be banned. This measure would affect 95 percent of existing holiday rentals in downtown Madrid, according to official city estimates. The plan also considers that a housing unit that is rented out to tourists for more than 90 days out of the year is being used for commercial activity, and its owner will have to apply for a commercial license. With these measures, city officials are hoping to curb gentrification in downtown Madrid, where 500 proceedings have been launched against the owners of housing units in the districts of Centro, Salamanca, Moncloa and Chamberí. Of these, 147 have ended with owners forced to stop using their properties as holiday rentals, said officials, noting that there are an estimated 8,000 such housing units in the Spanish capital.

HELP Vega Baja aims for ‘green bags’ Following new legislation that shops, including charity shops, must charge customers for plastic bags, HELP Vega Baja thought they would look for an alternative solution. After looking for sponsorship, President Michele Masson met up with the José Miguel Perez from Grupo ASV and discovered that both organisations wanted to do what they could to help the environment. “We are keen to do what we can to not only help keep costs down for the charity but to consider the environment too. When we met with José it was wonderful to hear that he shared the same views and we agreed to work together to produce carrier bags made of paper! Grupo ASV covered the cost of the bags and we were delighted to take delivery of 1,000 bags last week.” As charities have to now charge for plastic bags the situation can be a little crazy. For example, we have heard from other charities that in some cases customers insist on new bags as they are paying for them, rather than accept used bags that are often donated to charities. Sadly this could lead to charities having to purchase plastic bags, which obviously negates the whole benefit of the legislation. The sponsorship and support we received from Grupo ASV has been terrific and the bags are now available in the Help Vega Baja shop in San Miguel. The charity is still asking that customers bring along their own bags when shopping and that any donations for the paper bags will go towards future stocks. The aim of the charity is to go completely “plastic free” for bags and it is working towards this. Help is a registered charity which helps people of all ages with all sorts of problems within the Vega Baja area from La Marina to Pilar de la Horadada. It has a centre at San Miguel de

Salinas which includes a charity shop and a hire centre for mobility equipment and a helpdesk in La Marina. Each supplies a wide range of information and advice to members and nonmembers alike. Typical enquiries include questions on residence, health care, driving, bereavement, wills, burglaries and much more. If the answer to a problem is not known immediately, every effort is made to obtain the appropriate information. The charity has the support of a hospital visiting team which visits the Vega Baja Hospital and is also able to send a visitor to Torrevieja hospital upon request. Help has a welfare officer who is able to offer advice and assistance. All requests for any of these services should be made via the San Miguel centre. If you would like to find out more about sponsoring HELP Vega Baja with any of their projects (bags, leaflets, posters etc), volunteering or if you have a group and you would like the team to come along to give a talk on the charity, please contact their San Miguel Centre on 966 723 733 or Michele Masson direct on president@helpvegabaja.com or 661365606

WEEKLY EURO UPDATE The big news for the pound this week was the announcement of the Bank of England (BoE) to finally raise interest rates to 0.75%. Prior to the announcement on Thursday, there was little movement in the pound as the markets appeared to be holding their breath and waiting for the arrival of ‘Super Thursday’. After much anticipation, the BoE Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voted unanimously, 9-0 to raise the interest rates for only the second time in a decade, it was announced today. The last increase was in November 2017, when the MPC increased the rate from the record low of 0.25%. The move takes the Bank Rate to its highest level since 2009. Predicted growth for the second quarter is coming in at just 0.4% but solid employment growth, steady pay growth and a rebound in consumer spending proved reason enough to deliver on the much-anticipated increase. In addition, the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) jumped from 53.1 in June to 55.8 in July, the fastest rate of expansion in 14 months. The announcement struck a note of caution, however, suggesting that there unlikely to be further rate rises in the near future. Mark Carney reiterated the risk of Brexit, but while parliament remains on summer break there is unlikely to be any major news to shake the pound on this issue in the near future. A slowing of growth is emerging in Europe. Eurostat published data which estimated that GDP growth stood at 0.3% in the second quarter, compared with the first. Quarterly growth is holding steady at 0.4% across the European Union but annual GDP growth slowed from 2.4% in the first quarter to 2.2% in the second quarter. These statistics were underscored by European Central Bank president Mario Draghi reiteration of the fact that ECB interest rates will remain at their current low levels "at least through the summer of 2019.”

In the US, Q2 gross domestic product figures showed that the economy expanded by an annualised 4.1%, equivalent to a quarterly 1.0%. This may have been the best performance in four years, but investors were expecting more after a series of bullish briefings and the US dollar lost a third of a cent in the immediate aftermath of the data's release. The greenback did recover, however, and regained all it had lost by the time the markets had closed. The US Federal Reserve left monetary policy unchanged, but hinted that higher interest rates may be a possibility later in the year. For now, the Fed is maintaining a 1.75% - 2% target range for the federal funds rate. On the global front, President Trump announced his dissatisfaction with the current tariffs on Chinese goods and indicated that they may increase in the near future; the suggestion of further escalation in the trade war may turn out to be bad news for the greenback in the longer term but after the announcement it was flat on the day against sterling but gained a third of a cent to the euro. The news that Canada had been excluded from trade talks between Mexico and the US meant that the Canadian dollar lost some ground early in the week. Monthly GDP data showed that Canada’s economy expanded 0.5% in May, however, and that helped the Loonie to rebound. Growth in Canada is widespread, with statistics showing positive numbers in 19 of the 20 sectors measured by Statistics Canada. Hints that the trade negotiations between the US and China may be restarted in the near future also gave the Canadian dollar a bit of a boost, although it will take more than a rumour to erase the fear and impact of a full scale trade war. The Australian dollar edged slightly higher this week after a rebound in Australian building permits and improved local retail sales.

Compromís Orihuela accuses Councillor of not supporting taxi drivers Hot on the heels of protests by taxi drivers across the country against the proliferation of VTC licenses (rental vehicles with driver), which began the week before last and carried through until the end of last

week, Compromis Orihuela has asked for clear support, from the Councillor for Transport Begoña Cuartero for local taxi drivers. "The taxi sector is asking for the regularisation

of the VTC licenses, a control, that the ratio is met and that the taxi service, which is a public service, is protected from unfair competition by private platforms or companies,” said Martin Borislavov, secretary of Compromís Orihuela. Compromís has accused the town councillor of not having taken any action to really improve the service: "Cuartero has refused to give the green light to new licenses, despite the fact that Conselleria has approved up to thirty and neither has she taken any action to fight against the intrusion suffered by taxi drivers by other entities.” The spokesman went on the raise the

point that there are questions over the possible illegality of a VTC company owned by a relative of the Councillor for Tourism, Sofía Álvarez. The comnay is being investigated for incompatibility of licenses and for operating with cards from another province after being denounced by the taxi drivers of Orihuela Costa. Snr Borislavov has asked Councillor Cuartero to demand that "in Orihuela the legality be met to defend public transport and that the government be positioned on the side of the taxi drivers, since they are living a difficult situation, which in Orihuela is complicated by the lack of investment

MEDITATION THE WATERFALL

Concentrate on your breathing - deep breaths in, and as you exhale, let go of anything that no longer serves you. Repeat 3 or 4 times until you feel relaxed. Visualise roots like tree roots growing from the souls of your feet and sinking into to the rich soil of mother earth. Imagine a white ball of light over your head which opens up and sends pure white light around the outside of your body so you are totally cocooned in protective light. I want you to start your journey standing in bare feet on soft sand in a private and safe bay, facing the sea. Your feet sink into the warm sand, and you hear seagulls calling overhead. If you wish you could swim for a while in the lovely water or you could wade out safely up to your waist and enjoy looking round at the stunning scenery. After a while you walk back onto dry land and take a walk along the beach. Notice what you see on the way. Eventually, you hear the sound of cascading water, and you go to explore. You walk a little more, and come to another small bay that curves around and there ahead of you is a magnificent waterfall that changes colour every few seconds. You wade out to it, and stand under

to improve the taxi service, which is overwhelmed with cars that, in some cases drive more than 200,000 kilometres a year.” The opposition party candidate was keen to point out that Compromís Orihuela has shown its support to the taxi drivers, respecting their right to strike over the constant threat to their livlihood. Finally, Snr Borislavov has concluded that "the lack of planning, effort and investment on the part of the council towards the taxi service has benefited the private companies in Orihuela and helped the appearance of pirate taxi drivers."

the waterfall, allowing the water to cleanse you as every colour washes over your body. Starting with purple, for all things spiritual, changing to indigo for clear insight, and then a deep blue for communication. After that, the water turns to an emerald green for healing, and then pink for love. The water now turns to yellow for upliftment and laughter and then a bright orange for joy. Last but not least, the water turns to red for grounding and then white for purity and divine love... While the colours wash over you, you may feel, see or hear someone joining you under the waterfall. This may be someone you know or someone new. Don't discount anything, just allow.... and feel at peace whether you are still alone, or whether you have company. Allow the water and the changing colours to bring you to a place of serenity - just simply being, in the perfect moment. It is time to come back now, so take your leave of the waterfall, walking back along the sand, retracing your steps... If someone joined you, say your goodbyes. Eventually, you are back where you started on the sand, facing the sea... Walk back now into this room, and listen to the sounds of the here and now. Bring your awareness back, and wriggle fingers and toes, only opening your eyes when you are ready. Know that you can go on your inner journey to the rainbow waterfall any time you wish. This article is about the curry leaf tree (Murraya koenigii), an aromatic leaf often used in Indian cuisine.

The curry leaf tree, a native of India, is a small, evergreen tree in the citrus family (Rutaceae) with very pungent aromatic leaves. They have a distinct, spicy curry-like flavour and generally go by the name curry leaves. The fresh leaves are an indispensable ingredient in the delicious curries of Southern India and Sri Lanka (and absolutely necessary for the authentic flavour). Although most commonly used in curries, leaves from the curry tree can also be used in many other dishes to add spice. The leaves are best used fresh as they lose most of their aroma and delicate fragrance when dried. Curry powder is a British invention to imitate the flavour of Indian cooking with minimal effort. Some curry powders indeed contain curry leaves, but probably only for historic or linguistic reasons, since dried curry leaves lose their qualities within days. A typical curry powder derives its taste mainly from cumin, coriander, black pepper, chili, fenugreek, ginger, celery, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, anis, etc. in variable amounts.

Description and Culture This tropical to sub-tropical tree is highly ornamental due to its compound leaves. It is slowgrowing and can be used as a hedge, an

ornamental shrub or as a potted specimen tree. Whether grown in large pots or on the ground it does not spread very much laterally. Harvesting of leaves encourages new growth and the tree also responds well to pruning, which is only necessary for shaping - to reduce the size or make it bushier. While this tree can grow to reach 15-20 ft. (4.7-6 m), you need only a small specimen to supply you with an abundance of leaves for your Indian dishes. In late spring to early summer the tree blooms with clusters of small, white, and sweetly scented flowers that attract lots of butterflies. The flowers are followed by small purple/black shiny berries that are edible, but their seeds are poisonous. The shiny-black fruits are very nutritious, sweet and are eaten fresh. However, they do have a characteristic odour which some find slightly unpleasant.

Propagation Curry leaf trees are propagated by growing the small suckers from the base of the tree, by root cuttings, or by seed. When harvesting seeds the berries should be ripe and fresh. Plant either the whole fruit (or remove the pulp), sow as soon as possible and keep moist but not wet. Fresh curry leaf seeds have a very high germination rate, but the problem is that the seeds are only viable for a couple of weeks. Seeds from India or Sri Lanka are going to be dead before you can plant them, unless you know someone who will send them by airmail. Your best option if you want one of these trees is to search the internet for a Spanish supplier of seeds or young plants, or ask at the local nurseries/garden centres if they can get it for you. Welcome to The Phi Phi Islands with Vivalia Travel The Phi Phi Islands are an island group in Thailand, between the large island of Phuket and the west Strait of Malacca coast of the mainland. The islands are administratively part of Krabi province.

Geography: There are six islands in the group known as Phi Phi. They lie 40 kilometres south-east of Phuket and are part of Hat Nopparat Thara-Ko Phi Phi National Park which is home to an abundance of corals and marine life. Tourism: The islands feature beaches and clear water that have had their natural beauty protected by national park status. Tourism on Ko Phi Phi, like the rest of Krabi Province, has exploded since the filming of the movie ‘’The Beach’’. In the early 1990s, only adventurous travelers visited the island. Today, Ko Phi Phi is one of Thailand's most famous destinations for scuba diving and snorkeling, kayaking and other marine recreational activities. The number of tourists visiting the island every year is so high that Ko Phi Phi's coral reefs and marine fauna have suffered major damage as a result. There are no hotels or other type of accommodation on the smaller island Ko Phi Phi Lee .

2004 tsunami: On 26 December 2004, much of the inhabited part of Phi Phi Don was devastated by the Indian Ocean tsunami. The island's main village, Ton Sai, is built on a sandy isthmus between the island's two long, tall limestone ridges. On both sides of Ton Sai are semicircular bays lined with beaches. The isthmus rises less than two metres above sea level. Shortly after 10:00 on 26 December, the water from both bays receded. When the tsunami hit, at 10:37, it did so from both bays, and met in the middle of the isthmus. The wave that came into Ton Sai Bay was three metres (9.8 feet) high. The wave that came into Loh Dalum Bay was 6.5 metres (21 feet) high. A tsunami memorial was built to honor the deceased but has since been removed for the building of a new hotel in 2015. At the time of the tsunami, the island had an estimated 10,000 occupants, including tourists.

Post-tsunami reconstruction: After the tsunami, approximately 70% of the buildings on the island had been destroyed. By the end of July 2005, an estimated 850 bodies had been recovered, and an estimated 1,200 people were still missing. The total number of fatalities is unlikely to be known. Local tour guides cite the figure 4,000. Of Phi Phi Don residents, 104 surviving children had lost one or both parents. In the immediate aftermath of the disaster, the island was evacuated. The Thai government declared the island temporarily closed while a new zoning policy was drawn up. Many transient Thai workers returned to their home towns, and former permanent residents were housed in a refugee camp at Nong Kok in Krabi Province. On 6 January 2005, a former Dutch resident of Phi Phi, Emiel Kok, set up a voluntary organization

Should I ask permission?

Dating a much younger man

A friend of mine got divorced several years ago. I recently bumped into his ex-wife. We got chatting and went for a coffee. We got on well and swapped phone numbers. Since then we have been texting. I’d like to ask her out but am concerned that my friend may object. He and I still see each other, and play Squash occasionally. I almost feel I need to ask permission to see his ex-wife. What do you think?

I am 75 and seeing a man 28 years younger than myself. I’ve had cosmetic surgery and don’t look my age. The problem is that I feel embarrassed about introducing him to my friends. My man friend is not with me for anything other than my company, as I don’t have tonnes of money or anything else to offer him. Because of this, I know his intentions are honourable. However, I think I will be judged by my friends who frown upon things like this. My man friend wants us to move in to his house together. I want to, but I am hesitant because of my friends opinions.

Do you own an Amazon Fire Stick? If it’s been several years, I think you might be ok to date this woman and I don‘t think you have to ask permission as such. However, I think it’s only right to mention your plans to your friend. You could say you wanted him to know before you went ahead as you don’t want anything to affect your friendship. Hopefully he will appreciate your honesty and give you his blessing.

At 75 years old, I would say go for it, and don’t care what other people think. I’d like to say if your friends are the type of people to judge others, then they are not worth knowing, however you obviously care about their opinion of you. If you don’t look your age then I can’t see why it would be a huge problem. This sounds like a relationship worth hanging on to. Life can be very short, so don’t waste time, and tell your friends soon.

Captain Morgan’s helps Elche children The Elche Children’s Care Home (ECCH) was recently invited to attend the Captain Morgan's fifth Anniversary charity event, held recently at the bar in Eagle’s Nest. This is always a fun event so charity volunteers Annette English and Maggi Morse were delighted to go along with a tombola stall and as always were made very welcome by Jane, Billy and their staff. It was a wonderful day with a stream of local entertainers and DJ's giving their time to support

local charities. Pictured are Billy and Jane

handing over a donation of 806 euros to ECCH volunteers Dave and Annette English. They also

gave Annette and Dave lots of gifts that they had collected from regular customers at the bar. Jane and Billy have been supporting the children since they took over the bar 5 years ago. They have held parties for the children and supplied them with lots of lovely Christmas presents during that time. Everyone at ECCH would like to thank Jane, Billy and the staff and customers of Capt. Morgan's Bar for their continued support and generosity.

Coastal contruction slammed Greenpeace has blasted Spain for more than doubling its construction in coastal areas. The rate of urbanization of Spain’s coastal land has more than doubled in the past 30 years, according to environmental organization Greenpeace. Despite the introduction of a law in 1988 intended to limit the development along its shores, the property boom throughout the 1990s led to a mass production of resorts, hotels and holiday homes along the Spanish coast, until the financial crash in 2008. As the world’s second

tourist hotspot after France, during the boom coastal laws were often worked around whilst officials turned a blind eye to sprouting buildings. Since the Spanish economy rebounded, the depletion of the Spanish coastline resumed. As a result, 530,000 hectares of the coast has now been built upon, compared to 240,000 hectares in 1988. According to the Greenpeace report, more than 90 percent of the first 500 meters of the majestic Marbella coastline has been built upon, whilst the north-eastern region of

Catalunya has lost a huge 26.4 percent of its coast to urbanisation. Greenpeace representative in charge of coastal issues, Paloma Nuche, told a Barcelona news conference discussing the condition of Spanish coastal areas: “The occupation of the coast has been massive and this leaves a legacy of a saturated coast”. In a bid to discourage this excessive urbanization, Spain’s Supreme Court has ordered that the 21-story Azata Del Sol complex in Almeria should be torn down.

BUYING A HOME? HOW MUCH INFLUENCE SHOULD YOUR CHILDREN HAVE?

Rebecca Serwotka

Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward – 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today! Featured on Best Buy Spain – Property TV – Sky Channel 189. Are you looking to buy a property, and have children under 18 years old? How much does their opinion matter to you, about what type of property you should buy? 55% of homebuyers said that yes, their children’s opinion factored into their decision, whereas 74% of homebuyers with children up to 36 years of age said they only took their opinion into consideration. Of course psychologists say that children should be involved in making any big decisions, but we all know children’s opinions can change very quickly! What they see on the internet, and watch on television has an influence on their current likes and dislikes. They can become too fixated on certain features as they don’t have the ability or understanding to look at the bigger picture. I’ve seen children start crying because their parents wanted to purchase a home without a swimming pool, which made them walk away and lose the home of their dreams, all because they focused on what their children wanted, but not what their

budget allowed them. You as the parent can make your children feel included without allowing their opinions to overrule yours. You’re the adult, it’s your hard earned money, so take the decision by the reins and decide what would best suit your needs both as a family, and yourself. Happy House-hunting!

Continued use of reflux medication increases the risk of kidney disorders, dementia and hip fractures. When we eat, food goes from the mouth to the stomach through a tube called the oesophagus, which has a small muscle ring on the lower end, acting as a valve; gastric reflux occurs when the lower oesophageal sphincter (LOS) does not work as it should, and allows acid to flow back and burn the lower part of the oesophagus. “This irritates and inflames the oesophagus, causes a sensation of acidity, and in time may even damage the oesophagus. It is often accompanied by the existence of a hiatal hernia, in other words, the stomach rises to the thoracic cavity in differing degrees, though this is not always the case,” explains Doctor Pedro Bretcha, President of the

Sociedad Española de Oncología Quirúrgica (SEOQ, Spanish acronym for the Spanish Society for Surgical Oncology) and surgical oncology specialist at Hospital Quirón salud Torrevieja. Among its multiple symptoms, Doctor Blas Flor, Head of the Digestive Surgery Service and surgical oncology specialist at Hospital Quirón salud Valencia, highlights pyrosis or heartburn, which is the sensation of retrosternal stinging or burning; regurgitations, which are the reflow of content from the stomach to the mouth; and others, such as epigastric abdominal pain, thoracic pain, aphonia, cough with no apparent cause, and sleep problems. This disease is benign and, in most patients, has no complications, ‘though at times,’ warns

the specialist, ‘the persistence and intensity of the symptoms may negatively affect patient’s quality of life and interfere with the activities of daily life,’ in fact, ‘chronic reflux may develop a pre-malign condition called Barrett’s Oesophagus, which in turn evolves into cancer. The vast majority of lower oesophageal cancers originate in chronic reflux.’ Gastro-oesophageal reflux is usually treated in three progressive steps. In the first place, a lifestyle change is considered, with a change in diet and use of over-the-counter antacids to reduce the frequency and severity of symptoms. ‘Weight loss, reduction or elimination of smoking and alcohol consumption, and the modification of eating and sleep habits can also be helpful,’ Doctor Bretcha points out.

Anti-Reflux Laparoscopic Surgery heals Burning and prevents the Side Effects of Medication

Business Profile In case the symptoms persist after these lifestyle changes, it is possible that patients may need pharmacological treatment. Antacids neutralise gastric acids, and over-thecounter medications reduce the amount of gastric acid produced. ‘Both may be effective in resolving the symptoms. Prescribed medications are more effective in healing oesophageal irritation and alleviating the symptoms, though before starting treatment, patients must consult their surgeon,’ warns the

High Effectiveness of Laparoscopic Surgery Laparoscopic surgery is highly effective in treating gastro-oesophageal reflux, and definitively eliminates the need for medications that, in the long term, cause side effects. As Doctor Blas Flor explains: “The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia, and consists of building a full or partial cuff using the stomach, around the oesophagus and placing it below the diaphragm. In

order to do this, we make small incisions, only millimetres in size, in order to access the abdomen through the laparoscope, which connects to a small video camera to fully view the abdominal cavity.’ Among the advantages of the laparoscopic approach, we can include a reduction in post-operatory pain, minimal scarring and quick reincorporation to work. “Thanks to this intervention, patients find relief for their symptoms in nine out of ten cases, and only 15 percent have a recurrence of the symptoms after five years. To these benefits, we must add suspension of the medication, which has been proven, with continued use over time, to be associated to a greater risk of kidney disorders, dementia and hip fractures,” concludes Doctor Bretcha. Magistrate Fernando Andreu has summoned the as-yet unnamed pair to appear. They will be allowed to view five of the nine pieces of evidence concerning persons killed or injured, property damage, notifications and other elements of the ongoing investigation. The remaining four files will be kept under wraps and only accessible to police and the court. They include information from property raids, telephone calls and other communications, including pictures of the terror cell handling explosives and of the fatal van attack on the Ramblas, both before the vehicle entered the pedestrianised street and after it left, plus footage of walkers being run over. Cases normally remain sub judice for a period of about a month at a time and

Spain fined over lack of waste water treatment The European Court of Justice has ordered Spain to pay a €12 million fine for prolonged failure to comply with a European directive on urban waste water collection and treatment. In an earlier judgment issued in 2011, this court had found that there were still 43 agglomerations with a population of 15,000 or more that failed to meet EU standards, even though member states were supposed to have adequate collection and treatment systems in place since 2001. Spain was given a 2013 deadline to comply, but the deadline expired and 17 localities were still discharging their waste water without proper treatment. In 2017, the EU Commission brought new action, and the Court of Justice has now fined Spain a lump sum of €12 million, plus a penalty payment of €11

million for every six-month period of delay in getting the remaining municipalities up to speed on their water treatment standards. As of today, there are nine Spanish municipalities that still fail to meet EU urban waste water regulations: seven in Andalusia (Matalascañas, Alhaurín el Grande, Isla Cristina, Tarifa, Coín, Nerja and Barbate), one in Asturias (Gijón Este) and one in the Canary Islands (Valle de Güímar). The Ecological Transition Ministry said that current planning regarding water treatment plants makes it impossible for these agglomerations to meet the standards before 2022. The last one will be Barbate, in Cádiz province. But ministry sources added that they are working on a new action plan to shorten that period.

According to the ministry, it is local authorities who are in charge of this issue, “and collaterally, the regional governments, unless there is a formal ‘national interest’ designation,” in which case it is the state. In Andalusia, for instance, four cases fall to the regional government and three to the national government. The EU will check back every six months, and the penalty will be reduced depending on the progress being made. The court also found that “the particularly long duration of the infringement constitutes an aggravating circumstance,” and noted that there has been a delay of nearly 18 years since the directive set a deadline of December 31, 2000 for member states to have proper waste water collection and treatment systems in place.

Popular Party stirs fear over ‘millions’ of migrants The recently-elected leader of Spain’s Popular Party (PP), Pablo Casado, has promised to “defend the borders” against the “millions” of undocumented migrants who want to enter Spain. “It isn’t possible to give legal papers to everyone, nor is it for Spain to absorb the millions of Africans who come looking for a better future in Europe,” said Casado at a party event in Ávila recently. “And because it’s not possible, we have to say so, even if it is politically incorrect.” Casado accused Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez of the Socialist (PSOE) party for his stance on immigration, arguing it incites more migrants to make the dangerous journey and supports criminal organisations. Spain recently welcomed two migrant ships that had been turned away by Italy, and it also announced new legislation to allow undocumented migrants to have full access to the public healthcare system from day one. Barcelona mayor Ada Colau: Let’s be sincere and responsible: Europe was

founded to defend life and say never again to racism and fascism. Are we or are we not democrats and Europeans? Normalising statements from [Pablo] Casado or [Italian Interior Minister Matteo] Salvini is the first step to destroying Europe and democracy According to Javier Ortega Smith, the head of VOX, a far-right party whose voters Casado is trying to attract, the fleeing migrants do not represent a “humanitarian crisis” but rather “an invasion orchestrated by criminal organizations and complicit foreign governments.” “While Sánchez was in Valencia welcoming a boat, 1,500 migrants were arriving in Almería and Algeciras,” said Casado over the weekend. “A million migrants are waiting on the coast of Libya planning a new route through Spain.” “The PP is not going to allow attacks against our police officers,” Casado added, in reference to the violent border crossing of hundreds of migrants into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta last week. “We are going

to support the police and Civil Guard unashamedly and un-dividedly.” According to the Interior Ministry, 17,605 undocumented migrants have arrived in Spain by sea since the beginning of the year. Under the PP government of former Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, 21,971 people entered Spain in 2017 in the same way. So far this year, 3,292 have entered by land through Ceuta and Melilla, compared with 3,280 in 2017. The remarks come as the new PP leader promises to steer the conservative party further to the right. Upon his election, Casado has campaigned for more restrictive abortion legislation, a tougher stance on nationalist parties in Catalonia and Basque Country, as well as a hard line on immigration. Morocco relaxes immigration controls Internal reports from the European Union have warned that Morocco is easing security at the border. Experts say Moroccan border authorities are failing to stop criminal organizations from

smuggling migrants to Spain. “Internal issues in Morocco, the main transit country to Spain, have caused a gap which allows more exits, particularly from the west coast of Morocco,” warns the 2018 risk analysis report. Intelligence reports also indicate “an

increase in human activity” in Mount Gurugú, where many Sub-Saharan migrants wait for their moment to enter Spain. Sources from the Spanish government say that Morocco is still waiting for around €30 million in economic support from the EU budget.

Spain asks EU for emergency funding to help with migrant arrivals Spain is asking the European Union for help to manage growing migration flows in the Mediterranean. The Spanish government has requested additional emergency aid from the European Commission, said a spokesperson for this EU institution recently. Commission sources suggested there will be a positive response to the request, without providing details of the aid that might be extended. Spain is asking for money from the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund, which has set aside €3.1 billion for the 20142020 period for assistance to migrants and refugees. Spain last received funds on 2nd July, when the EU sent €25.6 million to improve the migrant reception system in Ceuta and Melilla, two Spanish cities located on the northern coast of Africa that have recently seen a spike in arrivals from Morocco. The funds were also aimed at enhancing return strategies. Besides listing its own demands, the

Spanish government has also added a list of requests from Morocco, a traditional ally in stemming migration flows into Europe. Sources at La Moncloa, the seat of Spanish government, admitted that for the last two years Rabat has been expecting greater financial support from the EU budget, which they estimated at around €30 million. Other sources raised that figure to €190 million. But the EU executive has suggested that part of that request has already been addressed through a recent release of €55 million for border management in Morocco and Tunisia. Internal EU reports have warned that Morocco is easing security at the border. Experts say Moroccan border authorities are failing to stop criminal organisations from smuggling migrants to Spain. “Internal issues in Morocco, the main transit country to Spain, have caused a gap which allows more exits, particularly from the west coast of Morocco,” warns a 2018 risk analysis report.

Authorities in Andalusia are struggling to find the resources to assist all the undocumented migrants who have reached the region’s southern shores in recent months. Over 1,800 people who were recently rescued in the Strait of Gibraltar are temporarily housed in pavilions and sports centres in Cádiz province. According to the Interior Ministry, 17,605 undocumented migrants have arrived in Spain by sea since the beginning of the year, and 3,292 more have entered by land through Ceuta and Melilla. An average of 54 people arrived in Spain by sea each day in the first five months of 2018. That average has since shot up to 220 per day. Spain has now become the main gateway into Europe through the Mediterranean, ahead of Italy and Greece. Shelter services have been unable to keep up with the demand, leaving many migrants to sleep in overcrowded centers, police stations and even boat decks.

Agencies The Spanish Interior Ministry has sent a new contingent of around 20 border patrol officers to Ceuta, said the government in a statement. Five vehicles and a helicopter with night vision imaging technology have also been dispatched to the area. The move comes after around 800 immigrants stormed the border fence recenlty, using quicklime and other weapons against officers. Following the incident, the government delegate in the Spanish enclave, Salvadora Mateo, informed Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska about the urgent need to increase the presence of law enforcement officers at the border. Representatives for Civil Guard officers were not impressed by GrandeMarlaska’s recent visit to Algeciras to supervise the rescue and assistance of migrants arriving on the shores of Cádiz province. “A simple pat on the back will not do,” said Raúl Lobato, spokesman for the Spanish Association of Civil Guards (AEGC).

Lobato said that officers working at the border with Morocco “are at their limit, because the situation there has been very complicated for a very long time.” He said there are “very wellorganised mafias operating in the area, and the problem must be addressed on site, by controlling those mafias.” This, he said, requires “more personnel and more resources.”

Valencia shows off Spain's first 3D-printed house Scientists in Valencia have created Spain's first 3D printed house - a 24m2 pilot model - the first house built in situ using a 3D Image printer. The house was showcased adjacent to Valencia's Polytechnic University's (UPV) Faculty of Fine Arts by up-and-coming Valencian tech company Be More 3D. According to the company's CEO, Vicente RamĂrez, the house is the third in the world to be made entirely by digital means and was created using a concrete printer measuring 7m x 5m, the first 3D printer patented in Spain. "It works like a concrete pastry piping bag that moves from side to side, pouring one layer of concrete on top of another. Afterwards, the layers melt together, quickly creating a reinforced concrete wall", explained RamĂrez.

He emphasised the fact that this revolutionary system is different from other 3D printers because it is "more modular and versatile" as well as being easy to transport and assemble, allowing the house to be built in situ, in contrast to other similar machines where walls are 'printed' in one place but then have to be transported to the actual site where the house is going to be built. RamĂrez also pointed out other advantages when using this technology to construct buildings, like reduced construction lead times since "the structure can be built in 7 to 12 hours, and the build-time for a whole house could be as little as one and a half to two months"; a decrease in construction waste, making it ecologically more viable; and a cut in production

costs "by something like 35 percent". The Valencia tech firm also highlighted the "new job opportunities" it created, saying "the machine doesn't perform magic : it builds supporting walls, saving time and money, but then we need builders, electricians, plumbers...". Another advantage of the technology is that it reduces the risk of work-related accidents as "there is no need to work high up off the ground as the machine does it all". Be More 3D was founded in 2015 by four former UPV Construction Engineering students wanting to find practical applications for their 3D printing studies. After launching this prototype, they are now working on bringing 3D printed houses onto the market.

The Military diet versus.... The Military Diet sounds like an intense yet efficient way to lose weight. After all, people in the military are in great shape and need a proper diet to fuel their rigorous training. Upon further inspection, however, the Military Diet may just be another fad diet with lofty claims and potentially dangerous side effects. The Military Diet, found on themilitarydiet.com, is a meal plan that has grown in popularity over the last couple years. The program bills itself as a "rapid weight-loss plan" that promises to help you lose "up to 10 pounds in one week without strenuous exercise or prescriptions." It's actually a three-day meal plan that outlines specific foods you are supposed to eat and although some substitutions are allowed, the plan is pretty strict about what you can and cannot eat. Here's an example of what day one of the three-day diet looks like: Breakfast: 1/2 grapefruit 1 slice of toast 2 tablespoons of peanut butter 1 cup of coffee or tea with caffeine (no cream or sugar, only sweetener can be Stevia) Lunch 1/2 cup of tuna 1 slice of toast 1 cup of coffee or tea with caffeine Diner 3 ounces of any type of meat 1 cup of green beans 1/2 banana 1 small apple 1 cup of vanilla ice cream

The diet says it will help you lose weight by putting you in a calorie deficit: day one is about 1,400 calories, day two is about 1,200 calories, and day three is about 1,100 calories. On your "off" days, which are four days, you're still supposed to only eat 1,500 calories or fewer. If this seems like too few calories to eat each day, especially if you're active, that's because according to experts, it is. Something this restrictive is definitely not sustainable and borders on being unhealthy, is the concern of a number of dietary and nutrition experts when reviewing this plan. Most experts do not recommend these types of severe and restrictive diets as they are usually lacking in many important nutrients, like fibre and micronutrients, and they are also really low in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Is It Possible to Lose 10 Pounds in 1 Week? Aside from the potential dangers of eating so few calories in one day, another issue with the Military Diet is that it claims to help you lose up to 10 pounds in a week. For people looking to lose 10 or more pounds, this may seem like an easy solution. But these lofty promises are too good to be true. For starters, everybody has a unique set of calorie needs, so it's impossible to predict how much weight someone will lose in a certain amount of time. And aside from being unpredictable, losing that much weight in a short period of time is potentially dangerous. Losing that much weight that quickly will definitely mess with your hormones and metabolism, which is bad for longterm weight loss; when you lose weight that quickly, you will also inevitably lose

muscle. The other concern is that as soon as you start eating ‘normally’ you will put the weight straight back on. Experts recommend that people trying to lose weight stick to proven methods based on eating a well balanced calorie controlled diet with exercise, such as like Weight Watchers or intermittent fasting. Or meet with a registered dietician to help you lose weight and make lasting behavior changes. So, if you're looking for a way to lose weight and keep it off for good, the Military Diet is not the way to go. Look to more sustainable methods for weight loss, including eating more nonstarchy vegetables, appropriate amounts of protein and fat, avoiding added sugars and refined grains, and perhaps consulting a registered dietitian to learn what an appropriate weight-loss plan would be for you as an individual. Weight Watchers Pasta, steak, cheese, ice cream – even chocolate ... you can eat what you want on Weight Watchers. While the popular weight-loss plan has been revamped, the basic principle of eating what you love remains, though the program steers you toward healthier foods with its points system. In its new program, called WW Freestyle, you can roll over some of your points to another day. And there are also more than 200 “zero-point” foods that you don’t need to track at all. Those items include beans, chicken breast (skinless), eggs, fish and of course fruit and veggie. Weight Watchers isn’t so much a diet as a lifestyle-change program. It can help you learn how to eat healthier and get more physical activity, so you lose the weight for good.

You can follow the plan online on your own. You'll track your food choices and exercise, chart progress, and find recipes and workouts. There’s a coaching option if you prefer one-on-one consultations by phone, email, and text. A Consumer Reports survey found that people who went to meetings were more satisfied with the program and lost more weight than people who used only the online tools. No food is forbidden when you follow this plan, which doesn’t make you buy any pre-packaged meals. Weight Watchers assigns different foods a SmartPoints value. Nutritious foods that fill you up have fewer points than junk with empty calories. The eating plan factors sugar, fat, and protein into its points calculations to steer you toward fruits, veggies, and lean protein, and away from stuff that's high in sugar and saturated fat. You’ll have a SmartPoints target that's set up based on your body and goals. As long as you stay within your daily target, you can spend those SmartPoints however you’d like, even on alcohol or dessert, or save them to use another day. Sliming world Slimming World’s unique plan is called Slimming World Food Optimising. The theory behind the plan is simple – to lose weight you need to take in fewer calories than you use up. Slimming World Food Optimising achieves this reduction in calories by encouraging dieters to freely eat foods that are lower in calories but high in nutrients such as pasta, lean meat, rice, fish, fruit and veg, whilst limiting caloriepacked foods that are nutrient-poor such as biscuits and booze.

Because the focus is on eating mainly lower-calorie foods, Slimming World claims that its Food Optimising diet lets you eat as much 'free food' as you like. Again these are foods such as lean meats, fish, fruits, veggies, eggs and most store cupboard ingredients. You also get healthy options each day on grains and dairy which is a simple way to make sure you eat what your body needs, but don’t over indulge on the cheese or bread. You only have to count Syns in restricted foods rather than counting the calories for everything you eat. This means there's less weighing and measuring. However, this lack of focus on how much you eat means that you are unlikely to learn about portion sizes and calories and could easily revert to your old ways of eating; however, if you are a ‘big eater’ or very active this system is ideal. Intermittent fasting As the name suggests this involves alternating cycles of fasting and eating. Many studies show that this can cause weight loss, improve metabolic health, protect against disease and perhaps help you live longer. Intermittent fasting is an eating pattern where you cycle between periods of eating and fasting. It does not say anything about which foods to eat, but rather when you should eat them. There are several different intermittent fasting methods, all of which split the day or week into eating periods and fasting periods. Most people already "fast" every day, while they sleep. Intermittent fasting can be as simple as extending that fast a little longer. You can do this by skipping breakfast, eating your first meal at noon and your last meal at 8 pm.

Another British fugitive arrested in Spain Another of Britain´s Most Wanted has been arrested in Spain. This one had been on the run since 2015 facing child sex offences. Officers from the Guardia Civil caught up with David Hayes, wanted on an international arrest warrant to answer charges relating to child sexual exploitation. Hayes, a former Bangor City press officer, is accused of the systematic sexual abuse of two children at their family home, and has been charged with a total of 9 serious sexual offences. He failed to appear at Mold Crown Court in December, 2016. North Wales Police Detective Chief Inspector Andrew Williams, said in January, 2017, “We believe that Mr Hayes may well have travelled onto the continent after he absconded from court last year

and much work continues in efforts to trace his current whereabouts. We are working with colleagues in the National Crime Agency along with other law enforcement bodies, home and

abroad, to locate him and facilitate his arrest. It is vital that we trace Mr Hayes and anyone with information as regards his location is requested to contact North Wales.”The arrest took place in Granada.

Woman arrested for 'drowning' prank A young woman who faked her own drowning at a Mar Menor beach as a 'practical joke', has been arrested and may face a hefty fine. Two lifeguards jumped into the sea, a speedboat was sent out, and a quad and an ambulance were drafted in when the female was seen apparently in

serious difficulties and calling for help off the shores of a beach in San Javier, Murcia. Once rescuers reached her, they discovered it had all been a set-up 'for a laugh'. Given that the lifeguards had put their own safety at risk and the use of resources and vehicles were

occupied trying to save her instead of being available for use in genuine cases, the team were not amused and called the Local Police who demanded she explain herself. It is believed she was arrested and later freed, but may end up with a fine for wasting emergency services' time.

Crédit Suisse to move London workers to Madrid after Brexit International bank Crédit Suisse plans to shift part of its workforce to Madrid from London in light of Brexit as it wants to retain access to its clients and markets in the European Union. Around 50 employees of the Swiss entity are preparing to relocate to the Spanish capital amid talks with staff and

their representatives, regulators and other key figures as the company fears it may be cut off from its operations in the EU in the event of a 'hard Brexit'. The central European country's second-largest bank says it will expand its existing premises and operations on the continent after next 29th March, but will

keep a presence in the British capital because 'London will continue to be a key part' of the firm. At present, Crédit Suisse has 240 employees in Spain, a number which will rise by over a fifth in the event of a nodeal Brexit or if sufficient guarantees are not provided in time for the Article 50 deadline. Switzerland's biggest bank, UBS, is also making crisis plans, which will involve fusing its London branch with its European holding that operates from Frankfurt, Germany. Although Crédit Suisse and UBS are based in a country which is not in the European Union, its offices in the UK have always been part of its network within the EU, where it prefers to focus its activities outside Switzerland. Once the UK leaves the EU, the banks' branches in the former will not serve the same purpose, hence the decision to move certain strategic areas to the continent.

Furbys win national competition The ‘Furbys’ dance group from Torrevieja’s Payas School of Dance came first in the National Urban Dance championship in Sangonera La Verde at the weekend. The competition is the third event of this kind to be held and is considered to be the biggest in the southeast of Spain. More than 500 dancers competed with their individual schools as around 5,000 people spectated at the event. The

prize money at stake was €2,500 and the judges were of a national and international level. They included Espe Bastida from Barcelona, Luis Cabeza from Madrid and Lady Cun Faya from Italy. There were two separate categories including that for adults, in which another Torrevieja dance group competed and the junior group that included Furbys and also Mantix from

Torrevieja. Over a period of more than four hours, thirty different groups performed, eighteen of these being in the junior category. The Furbys already had an inkling of their success when the judges stood up and applauded and their final choice as the best dance act of the night came as little surprise. The dance was based on Harry Potter and included an imaginative interpretation of the theme

of the books with a selection of sorceresses and the characters themselves. Individual dancers performed as Harry Potter, Dobby, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, Minerva, Luna Lovegood, Neville Longbottom, Ginny Weasley and Bellatrix Lestrange. The dance combined modern dance steps with a story to present an unusual and compelling performance.

Those participating in the competition came from many different towns in Spain including Valencia, Malaga, Murcia, Cádiz, Almería and Palma de Mallorca, as well, of course, as the groups from Torrevieja. As winners, Furbys picked up prize money of €500 as well as a trophy. When Torrevieja so often receives bad press it is refreshing to hear of the successes that come from the town too.

Harold via email asks: Hi Aunty, could you please tell me how to completely remove AVG from my laptop as I'm sick of it popping up every time I start Windows and when I go on the internet. I did the free upgrade to Windows 10 about a year ago and following your brilliant advice I have been using the built in Windows Defender and Malwarebytes and I am happy this is enough security. Aunty Says: Hello Harold. The standard way of removing AVG is through ‘Control Panel’ ‘programs and features’ (either right click on the Start icon or type control panel into the search box) but if you´ve tried this and it still appearing then maybe try AVG’s handy removal tool which you will find by typing AVG REMOVER into Google.

easy fix that you can do yourself is to check that all the air vents around the sides and underneath are clear from dust & fluff. I’m a tad curious that a “less than 12 month old” laptop should have Win7 because the newest version of Windows (Win10) has been around for nearly 2 years and its predecessor (Win8) is getting on for 4 years old. Anytime I have seen a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate (or Enterprise) it has been a cracked copy. Can you send me the make/model Valerie and I will investigate further. Ben from La Zenia asks: Hi Aunty I hope you can help me. I have signed up for my Water bill (Agamed) online but when it arrives in my email inbox, I can read it on the screen but I would like to download (and

I have to scroll through a list and choose Adobe Acrobat Reader and everything seems OK but how can I stop it asking this every time? Aunty Says: Hi Ben. There should be a box you can tick to ‘always use the selected program’ which will stop the message reappearing. Well that’s it for this week. Email me your questions to auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com and I will see what I can do.

Valerie via email asks: Hello Aunty. I recently bought a second hand Acer laptop that is supposedly less than 12 months old but I seriously have my doubts. It keeps randomly freezing at no particular time and sometimes it restarts with no warning, and when it restarts it is has a message something like “Ooops the disk needs to scanned and repaired” I have taken it back to the shop where I bought it from in Montesisnos but typically it doesn’t ever go wrong when it’s there. It is not in that bad condition and I have Windows 7 Ultimate. Any suggestions? Aunty Says: Hi Valerie. Its difficult to be 100% sure but this sounds typical of an overheating problem, or possibly a dying hard disk. Before you do anything you should make a backup copy of any personal photos & documents just in case the laptop’s hard drive completely packs up. A quick and

MEDCARE - NUMBER ONE FOR ANTI-AGEING TREATMENTS!

M

edcare has been treating medical and dental patients for more than 10 years, and over the past few years, aesthetic treatments have become incredibly popular as well. Both surgical and nonsurgical procedures are popular and anti-ageing is the buzz word amongst most patients who visit Medcare's Aesthetics centre. With treatments being more affordable and more acceptable today, women and men of all ages are choosing methods of holding back the years. And why not! Often feeling much younger than their age, Medcare's patients want to look as good as they feel. Doctor Hussain has a great reputation within the medical field and aesthetic field alike. She is a highly experienced clinician and provides patients with full knowledge and options during their free skin consultation. The doctor will listen to the patient, understand where they would like to make aesthetic improvements and talk through a number of treatment options that will help achieve the desired result. The most popular treatments for the face are Botox to reduce those pesky wrinkles, and fillers to plump up those furrows or hollow cheeks. Using the best products on the market, Medcare's doctor can renew and refresh tired - looking skin. She has introduced the Teoxane range of fillers and mesotherapy, and the range includes the only licensed filler for under the eyes, to reduce eye bags, wrinkles and dark circles. It's a fantastic range.

As well as the ever-popular Botox and fillers, Doctor Hussain, assisted by Nurse Susie, regularly providing other treatments, like Sculptra (a natural long-lasting filler), PRP (or Dracula therapy as it is often called!) and Dermapen (microdermabrasion which resurfaces the skin removing pigmentation, lines and sun damage). There is plenty of information about all of these treatments on the Medcare website. Working alongside Dr Hussain, and in conjunction with her, is Dr Teresa Bernabeu. Dr Teressa is a highly respected cosmetic surgeon and provides a range of more permanent anti-ageing treatments through surgery. The facelift is still one of the most popular methods of turning back the hands of time, and these days, the results are more natural than ever. But also an eye lift has a dramatic effect in brightening the face and making the patient look more refreshed and feel younger. One patient recently underwent a facelift and says: "I can't thank Dr T and Medcare enough! My facelift has made me feel so energetic and I have got so many complements from my friends! The service from all the girls at Medcare is second to none." Medcare now offers personal finance on surgical procedures and with Liposuction from 45 euros per month, Tummy tuck from 55 euros per month and breast augmentation from just 90 euros per month, it's not too late to regain the body of your youth or achieve the body of your dreams this summer.

All emergency vehicles will have Blue Lights After many years of discussion and disagreement, on 31st of July, 2018, it entered into law in Spain that all emergency vehicles will use flashing blue lights. The reform is published in Ministerial Order PCI / 810/2018, published in the BOE, modifying several Annexes to the General Vehicle Regulations -RD 2822/1998- among which is Annex XI, regarding the signal V-1 Priority Vehicle. Until the publication of this reform, blue lights were restricted to the exclusive use of the security services, such as the police or Guardia Civil, with other priority vehicles, such as those used by the fire service or ambulances, would use flashing orange lights. The flashing orange light is still used, and is carried by slow moving vehicles, those which constitute an obstacle in the road due to being stopped or parked or driving at a low speed while performing a service or work on the road. Previously, this situation generated some confusion amongst some road users by not clearly identifying the vehicles for fire fighting, health care and civil protection as priority vehicles in emergency service that also have priority. Now, blue lights are reserved to signal

all priority vehicles in emergency services and the orange for vehicles that constitute an obstacle in the road, which contributes to improving safe mobility. The change also puts Spain on a par with the existing regulations in most of the States of the European Union, in which the luminous device of the priority vehicles is blue, in particular those of France and Portugal, which are the countries in which It is common that, in emergency situations, Spanish priority vehicles enter these countries and vice versa.

With the aim that this change can be made progressively, the Ministerial Order grants a period of two years for the owners of the affected vehicles to change the orange colour of their lighting devices to blue.

Prosecutors ask police to investigate mobile use before traffic Incidents Combining statistical data from the DGT and the National Institute of Toxicology, there has been a consistent growth in road traffic incidents in Spain since 2015, compared to the previous descending trend from 2005. According to the research carried out by both institutions, the main causes are the deliberate violation, by drivers, of road traffic legislation that is in place to protect the life and physical integrity of everyone. According to statistics, inappropriate speed is present in 30% of traffic incidents that occur on Spanish roads. It is fair to say that almost all drivers will exceed the maximum permitted speed on all journeys. But the data shows that distractions caused by the use of mobile phones are the main cause of incidents on Spanish roads. Whereas penalties for using a mobile phone can vary depending on the severity of the resulting incident, it is still the case that many drivers underestimate how much their concentration is diverted by using a mobile, especially since their use has also undergone a stark transformation from the times of a simple conversational tool to the more frequent use of social media and messaging, through voice, text and photographs. Such is the distraction caused by these devices, even the use of hands free is being investigated as this too seems failing, not only as many drivers believe that simply holding the device on speaker constitutes hands free,

which it does not, and the use of in-ear devices are already banned. The special public prosecutor of Road Safety, Bartolomé Vargas has suggested de-linking the increase in the incident rate due to the increase in the number of journeys, but rather to driver attitude. Vargas sent an official letter to the traffic police of the national territory to investigate mobile phone calls before traffic incidents, so that they can be taken into account as "serious imprudence" due to the inattention of the driver. This would entail prison sentences of between one and four years - as reckless homicide - in addition to the loss of the licence for another six; and if they are injuries, the penalty can be up to three years, with the deprivation of the licence for four years. Vargas was questioned whether the investigation of the latest movements of the mobile could go against the Law of Data Protection, to which he replied that it required, "a legal examination... something we are working on." He stressed that the inquiries will only be made in the event of an incident, culminating in a report that details the duration of a call, the frequency of use in the journey in which the incident occurred or even if they have used apps such as WhatsApp. At the moment there are other ways, such as the testimonies of witnesses. Vargas put the use of the mobile in a high position when it comes to analysing "the main cause of

accidents" and denied that the increase in deaths in traffic incidents "is due to the improvement of the economic situation or the number of trips. “it is an excuse,.” He says, "It was one of the factors that the DGT pointed out in its 2017 accident balance, a year in which 1,830 people died, 20 more than in 2016, 141 more than in 2015." Our country has gone from being the fifth country with the lowest road casualties in Europe to the eighth in four years (with a rate of 39 deaths per million inhabitants)". The Public Prosecutor's Office considers that of the 600 road deaths that occurred due to them leaving the road, "a good part" was caused by the use of mobile phones. Last year alone, more than 88,000 complaints were made for handling these devices and 33,800 for other distractions at the wheel. The hands-free or the navigator puts in the spotlight the connected car, which requires these and other tools to operate fully, and in turn is the passport for the achievement of the autonomous vehicle. In 2017, 81,951 convictions were issued for road traffic offences, of which one in three was serious enough to constitute a crime related to road safety. The commitment of society is crucial to end the "quintet" of death, that is, use of the mobile phone at the wheel, speeding or previous consumption of alcohol, drugs and psychoactive drugs.

Q

uickly, Premier League, quickly. That transfer window will not be open forever you know.

The window slams (does it actually slam?) shut on Thursday night meaning that all Premier League managers will be left with a very expensive squad at their disposal until January. Oh, the hardship of not having an extra couple of weeks to panic buy your way in or out of European contention or worse, in or out a Premier League relegation scrap. It must be hard for Jose Mourinho. In fact, we know it is hard for Jose Mourinho because he will not stop going on about how hard it is for Jose Mourinho. Jose is still 'hopeful' that Manchester United might conclude some more transfer business by Thursday, but who really knows? Harry Maguire seems to have gone cold meaning that United might well end up with Barcelona's Yerry Mina as their defensive reinforcement. Don't forget to send him up for corners, Jose. Chelsea, at the time of writing, have been linked to every single top-flight footballer in Europe and have signed Rob Green on a free. New gaffer Maurizio Sarri has said before that he 'hates transfers' and 'prefers to work with the squad he is given' so it looks like he will be in his element. All those Academy boys who have returned to Chelsea this summer from their various gap-years abroad could well get a chance under the Italian, which is exciting for English football. Will it actually happen though? Wait until Friday and we shall know a lot more.

Peppy G has committed to being 'ruthless' when it comes to defending Manchester City's crown - what does that really mean, Pep? Well, the bald Spanish man will be even tougher on his players demanding even more of them. And, you just know they will respond to this far better than the lads over at Old Trafford do when the grumpy Portuguese asks for another 10%. Over on Merseyside, there are two clubs full of hope. Liverpool have spent 'the Coutinho money' and then some fixing some obvious holes in their squad - yes, I mean you Loris - and look well equipped to take Jurgenball to the next level. Naby Keita, Fabinho, Allison and Shaqiri have all come at a cost but could well turn out to be money pretty well spent. Which, of course, is the opposite to what is going on just down the road at Goodison. Richarlison for £40m? Barcelona's reserve full-back for £20m? Everton are, yet again, proving that having a decent transfer budget doesn't mean anything if you don't have a clue how to spend it wisely. Sam Allardyce is chewing his cud furiously wishing he'd had a bit of that. What about the other London boys? Well, West Ham have been doing their summer pantomime of looking like being a well-run club and making some theoretically astute signings, but we all know what will happen once the actual football begins. The Poch is still waiting for Daniel Levy to prise open the chequebook and buy him someone, but that will only happen by lunchtime on Wednesday. Unai Emery seems to be doing a good job of untangling the ball of wool

ABBEY ANGLING On Tuesday 31st July we fished an open match at the El Bosquet Complex. The weather was extremly hot with temperatures reaching 36 degrees at times. We fished a walk off which meant the first one out of the bag could choose which peg they fished. DannI Kerkhoff, one of our Dutch members won the match, he picked a very unfancied peg 5 , he fished the paste just below the far shelf to catch 42.060kg of mainly carp, 2nd was the evergreen Neil McBernie who fished peg 27 and fished pellet up in the water to amass 41.220kg of carp, 3rd fishing pèg one and alternating between the feeder and pellet on the pole was Terry Screen on peg 1 who weighed in 35.020kg. Here is the full result 1st Danni Kekhoff 42.060kg Peg 5 2nd Neil McBernie 41.220kg Peg 27 3rd Terry Screen 35.020kg Peg 1 4th Ian Brown 25.740kg Peg 2 5th Richard King 25.720kg Peg 18 6th Bill Reade 20.980kg Peg 14 7th Richard Wood 20.980kg Peg 16 8th Jackie Breslin 18.580kg Peg 22 9th Alan Reid 4.720kg Peg 25

Wednesday August opens organised by Neil McBernie On Wednesday the 1st August we were again at the El Bosquet complex. Rod N reels do not have any matches in August so Neil is running a series of matches every Wednesday draw at 8am and fish from 930 till 3pm, Anyone can attend just turn up at the venue before 8am. Again the match took the form of a walk off with anglers drawing for order then picking which peg

created by Arsene Wenger in the last decade and his Arsenal squad look fairly promising and exciting. The additions of Lichtsteiner, that young French kid and Lucas Torreira could mean that Arsenal wrestle back the North London 4th Place trophy this season. Crystal Palace have been quietly improving their squad but still haven't found anyone foolish enough to part with good money, or bad, for Christan Benteke. Watford, nothing to report there folks I am afraid. Javi Gracia still has a job until at least the third game of the season. What about Newcastle United, then? Rafa Benitez is 'very worried' about how the club is run but has been given £9.5m to spend on a Japanese striker from Germany. That's it Rafa, spend it wisely.

HEADQUARTERS The Club’s offices are up and running. The new CD Torrevieja headquarters located in Calle Caballero de Rodas, nº56 Bajo in Torrevieja are now up and running, and have the following opening hours to attend to members of the public: ➡ Monday from 17:00 to 20:00 ➡ Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10:00 to 13:30 and 17:00 to 20:00 ➡ Friday from 10:00 to 13:30 ☎ | Telephone: ➡ 965 719 699 Work is still being carried out on the club’s new offices, both in terms of the

corporate image and at an organisational level, nevertheless at a good, steady pace. A few days ago, the club’s name and logo were added to the front of the new HQ. The HQ will be used for various purposes, including the club’s offices, the shop (which we hope to inaugurate soon) and not forgetting a meeting point and information hub for all the fans and for anyone that would like any information about the club or needs to carry out any club-related paperwork etc.

Bournemouth have spent £25m on a Colombian midfielder which completely sums up the world we live in and Burnley are to buy Joe Hart for £4m which shows how much his stock has dropped - plus, playing for a team in Claret last season didn't go great for Joe, did it? What about the promoted gang? Well, Sporting Wolves of Portugal FC will be delighted to field 90% of the Euro 2016 winning squad. Fulham have made some very astute signings and could well stay up but Cardiff are doomed - and not just because they have kept Neil Warnock in charge. Have I missed anyone? Probably - so apologies to fans of Leicester City and anyone else that I haven't pointed the finger of fun at.

Quesada Bowls Club Report This weeks Friendship Cup competition was played at Quesada in the same good natured and fun atmosphere as the previous matches. An evening match, it was still very hot and humid but Quesada won 4-2 rinks and 132 -78 points. This extends Quesada’s lead after 3 matches to 73 points. As it’s so hot at the moment the final match next week will be played in the evening. Thank you to the reserves Sandra Heath and Peter Morgan and to Graham Phillips who stepped in to play in one of the

teams. Thanks also to the members who turned up to support. In the South Alicante knockout competition Terry Morgan is through to the men’s singles semi- finals and Carol Broomfield is through to the Ladies singles semi-finals. Good luck to both players. Just a reminder that, open to visitors, our popular Saturday morning Chicken Drive is continuing during the summer months. Anyone interested in taking part, please report to The Club, Quesada at 9.45am for a

10am start. Bowls and shoes are available free of charge if required. After many years of service as Membership secretary Joe Riley is retiring from the role. Huge thanks to Joe for doing such a wonderful job for Quesada Bowls Club and the members. More time to enjoy your bowls we hope. Meantime, for more information about our club, please contact our club secretary Deidre Leeming at Deidre.leeming@gmail.com New bowlers are welcome and introductory coaching is available. by Dee Stephenson

The Plaza Golf Society TPGS headed to Vistabella, a venue appreciated by most players since it became a full 18 hole course this year. As usual everybody entered the 2's pot and out of 34 players only 1 player claimed the 'pot'...step forward Billy Wilson scooping all 68 euros. Alas one of our guests appeared not to get on too well with the course and breaking the Society's lowest score record and making Gordy's 12pts last week look good was Tony Hessey with a challenged 6pts...back to the range for You! Nearest the pins saw Billy Wilson on the podium again alongside Andy Jones, Steve Barry and Rob McDowell

each winning vouchers donated by our hosts at The Ale House. Two additional prizes, donated by Mosquito Blinds R Us, for Longest Drive and nearest the pin in 3 on hole 14 were both won by Graeme Clarke pocketing 50€ in total. Best lady on the day saw Linda Ottway triumph scoring an impressive 35pts winning a sleeve of balls which her other half can lose at the next event. Our guest category had 9 players with Thomas Hessey 3rd with 33 pts, Peter Dobson 2nd with 35 pts both beaten by Andy Jones on 37 pts. Moving onto our Member competitions: Silver Division we

had the returning Nick Peach scoring 36pts for 3rd place behind 2nd placed Ian Woodhall with 37 pts but both were blown away by Barry Mitchell with a monster 43pts which the handicap committee will be scrutinizing closely and adjusting accordingly. In Gold Division consistent Graeme Clarke scored 36pts for 3rd, completing a great day for himself in 2nd was Billy Wilson with 38pts and heading up the day was Rob McDowell with a brilliant 40pts...congratulations to all our winners and thanks to everybody for taking part.
