Punta Prima green areas spruced up The Department of Infrastructure headed by Councillor Juan Ignacio López-Bas, is carrying out a project to improve certain green areas in Punta Prima. The areas, which are between apartment blocks in the coastal resort have recently become the responsibility of the local government and already the entire irrigation network has been renewed, a group of mulberry

trees have been planted to generate shade. Further work will see the playground cleaned, cleared and updated, new benches and bins are going to be replaced. Washingtonian palm trees will also be planted to make the area more pleasing to the eye. Luisa Boné, Councillor for Beaches and Services for of the

Coast said: “This action was much requested by the residents of the apartment blocks and surrounding streets. The area can now be used by the community and visitors and has been completed through an investment of 12,000 euros.” Mireille Toddington

The paseo Punta Margalla is the promenade from Las Columnas in the playa del Cura to Cala del Palangre and work to renovate the area will begin on 1st February. it is being funded between the town hall (60%) and Alicante province (40%). Altogether the investment will cost a million euros and will take four months to complete. It will be important to have any work finished by the summer as this is a very busy area. The project might have been started sooner but has been subject to disagreements between the two councils of the local government and the province. The prospect of the elections in May has perhaps given extra impetus to get the project started. The area that connects the two beaches of Cura and Locos will have a much-needed face lift. It was constructed in the 90s and currently has poor accessibility. There will be new pavement, the balustrade will be removedand there will be increased accessibility. it is also planned that there will be more areas to relax and facilities for children.

Safety Mariola Roccamora and a senior Police Officer. The life-saving machines will be kept in each of the police cars that patrol Orihuela Costa as the Policia Local are nearly always the first to respond to any incident on the coast. Therefore, if officers arrive and there is a medical problem that involves someone’s heart, carrying a defib will allow the officers to save lives without having to wait for an ambulance or medical support. The campaign, which has been running for less than a year, was launched by The Costa Blanca People at the 2018 Culinary Awards through a charity donation competition and local business Moneycorp generously rounded the figure up – giving us enough to buy the first of the five defibs. On hearing of the campaign, Help Vega Baja donated €1,500. This bought one of the defibs and several spare batteries and extra pads. The rest of the money to buy the remaining life-saving equipment, batteries and pads was raised by Help at Home Costa Blanca, in fact at a staggering 11,000 euros raised in total and so an extra defib (six in total) will be donated to

the Cruz Roja for its new ambulance that will operate across the Vega Baja. This recent hand-over presentation, held in the Salon de Actos at Play Flamenca Town Hall was attended by local expat media and Spanish media. During the formalities, The Costa Blanca People and Help at Home Costa Blanca signed over the equipment to the authorities. In return they committed to train around 30 officers to ensure that even with sick leave or holidays, whoever is manning the patrol cars on the coast they will be fully trained and able to use the defibs. In addition, the department is also now responsible for the upkeep and legally required maintenance of the machines. Councillor Rocamora said: “The people of the coast have raised money to buy these machines for no gain apart from saving lives. This is a pure act of solidarity and shows great community spirit and dedication. “The better prepared we are and the more equipment we have at our disposal, the better we can respond to the residents of Orihuela Costa.” Mireille Toddington

BITE SIZE Sports complex given a boost NEWS: Continued from page 3 government has announced a plan to introduce a marine reserve off the coast of Torrevieja. The exact details are not known but it is believed to focus on the area of CalaFerrís. The announcement was made at the tourism fair ‘Fitur’ in Madrid A few months ago, Torrevieja council awarded money for a feasibility study of the possibility of creating an area of environmental protection similar to that which covers the island of Tabarca. The purpose of the reserve is to protect some species of fauna and flora in specific areas and to encourage the growth of fishing stock.

FITUR continues The international tourism fair FITUR was taking place over last weekend in Madrid. It is an important event for Torrevieja as it is opportunity to show the rest of Spain, and in fact the world, what the town has to offer its tourists. This year it was the 39th exhibition of its kind and it began on 23rd February and finished on 27th January. During the fair,Torrevieja has presented its programme for the International Auditorium, taken part in a culinary presentation and displayed its gastronomic calendar. It is presented the tourist trail around the salt works in the townand the Russian Film Festival. Torrevieja has also been active in seeking to find ways of balancing the needs of tourists with the rest of the town’s population. Something which has been a challenge for other tourist areas in Spain. During FITUR the Tourist Office in Torrevieja received the ‘Q for Tourist Quality’ award and the town demonstrated its key position as a tourist attraction in the Valencian community. It is an opportunity to show off Torrevieja’s best bits and as such a range of aerial photos and panoramic images have been on display. A number of gifts have been given out to the public from Torrevieja’s stand including calendars prepared by the Tourism office and samples of sea salt from Las Salinas.

It is electric for the town hall The town council for Torrevieja is planning to replace its fleet of vehicles with 23 electric models, it’s been announced. The mayor, José Manuel Dolón, explained the importance of the town taking a lead in moving towards a sustainable vision. It is planned to replace the current stock of vehicles with electric alternatives including that of the mayor’s car. The mayor would also like to see the buses replaced by hybrid models. ‘In the case of buses the cost of purchasing them shoots up,’ said the mayor. ‘However, we believe it is vitally important to reduce environmental impact and also there would be longer term savings.’ Refuse collection is another area where the council has continued to Continued on page 6

It is being publicised as the biggest tidy up of sports facilities in Torrevieja since 2010. The renovation of the athletic and football pitches has already begun and the old artificial turf is on its way out. In its place there will be new turf in a bid to spruce up the football fields of ‘Gabriel Samper’ and ‘Esteban Rosado’. In total, the work had a bid price of €761,844.72 but it was finally awarded to contractors for €668,316. It also

includes the renovation of the athletics track which will begin at a later date. Itis expected that the work will take four months and during this time the displaced clubs can use the Vicente García stadium, enabling them to continue their training as normal. It is also planned that one of the fields will always remain open to the public so as not to cause too much disruption to normal schedules.

Julen’s body finally found The huge efforts made by rescue teams to rescue little Julen Roselló turned out to be in vain after the two-year old’s body was found on Saturday at 1.25am, after an intense 13-day search mission. The emergency services began the judicial process to remove his body from the borehole in Totalan, Malaga in the early hours of Saturday, after the family of the young boy were informed of the grim discovery. Julen fell down the 110-meter-deep borehole while playing on the land of a relative and the alarm was raised by two passing hikers, who were alerted by the screams of his family once they realised what had happened. Initial efforts to reach the child in the hole by the authorities were frustrated by a plug of earth around 70 meters down, but the cup and snacks he was carrying at the time of the fall proved that he was in there, as well as positive DNA tests on hair that was pulled out of the well. After the team of specialist miners sent down a parallel tunnel broke through into the borehole, and discovered the lifeless body of Julen, a team from the Civil Guard made its way to the home that a family in Totalán had lent to the parents of the child, Victoria García and José Roselló. They were accompanied by family members and friends who had travelled from all over to be with them. A Civil Guard vehicle with its flashing lights on suggested that news was being delivered inside the property, catching the attention of the 40 or so people who were in the village to show their support for Julen’s parents. They congregated outside the house in silence in the middle of the night, at around 2am. It was then, half an hour before the government officials confirmed the death, that sobs coming from the house and hugs between family members outside saw the news spread that the child had been located. The rescue efforts were constantly delayed over the last 13 days by the difficulty of the terrain where the borehole – which had been dug in search of water, but apparently not properly covered up – was located. A Civil Guard officer was the last person to take part in the rescue effort, after members of the specialist Mining Rescue Brigade managed to open up a four-meter gallery

that ran horizontally between the specially excavated rescue tunnel, and the borehole where the child was thought to be located. The work of the brigade, which began on Thursday afternoon, was long and arduous. To reach Julen’s body they had to cope with a number of obstacles and take huge security measures. They even had to resort to small explosive charges in order to get through the rock. They also had to wait for a range of issues to be solved before the rescue tunnel could be properly shored up. In the end, their rescue efforts were in vain. In the first days of the operation, several other options were considered. The alternatives included a horizontal tunnel made by a small boring machine, but several problems during the initial work, in particular landslides, led the teams to opt for a vertical rescue tunnel parallel to the borehole. Two tunnels were initially planned, but in the end the rescue teams opted for just one. Investigation The Civil Guard has begun an investigation in a bid to reconstruct the facts, “as would be done in any other disappearance,” according to sources from the force. A local court has also begun a probe into exactly what happened. The rescue efforts have been coordinated by Ángel García Vidal, the delegate from the School of Road Engineers in Málaga, and who worked side by side with the School of Mining Engineering and the Civil Guard on the mission. He had hopes that Julen would be found alive until the very end. The three local administrations – of the central, regional and provincial governments – worked with the support of the Totalán local council. In total, around 300 people made up the rescue effort, including firefighters, the 112 Emergency Service, Civil Protection, the Civil Guard, National Police and technical teams from private companies. Julen’s parents, José Roselló and Victoria García, are well-known residents of the neighborhood of El Palo, in Málaga, located at the foot of the mountains where Julen disappeared. In 2017, they lost their other son, Óliver, when he was three years old. He died unexpectedly of a heart attack while the family was walking along a beach.

‘The objective is that the works don’t affect the normal routine of the sports clubs that usually hold their training sessions there’, explained the councillor for sports, VíctorFerrández. ‘We have enough fields altogether to keep normal training going.’ Ferrández explained that the work is necessary as the current artificial turf has exhausted its useful life. It’s more than 11 years old and is used by

5

thousands of people over the course of each week. Suzanne O’Connell

Continuing to search for Henry The Civil Protection Unit in Torrevieja has continued to assist in the search for Henry Alejandro Jiménez Martin. This is the young man of 20 years old who disappeared from Orihuela Costa on 1st January 2019. On 25th January the group brought together 40 volunteers, together with the Guardia Civil and Local Police to continue the search. Councillor for security, Javier Manzanares, also took part and took time to speak to Henry’s mother and brother who are anxious that efforts to find him are not abandoned, ‘we’re still hoping to find him’ they explained. The area that was searched on 25th included the land around Torrevieja hospital and the natural parks and lakes of La Mata and Torrevieja. This is the second time that searches have taken place in Torrevieja. Most searches have been continuing in OrihuelaCosta as this was where he was last seen. Suzanne O’Connell

It is an extraordinary sight to see. Over one hundred people dressed in clothes from the wild west happily tucking into their carvery meal in Spain. ‘We try to be as authentic as we can,’ explains Christine Shooter who is press secretary for Los Pistoleros, Westerners Association. ‘Many people make their outfits, others have found them in charity shops. This dress comes from America.’ The costumes and, in fact, the room itself very much look the part. The Pistoleros team has been busy since the morning decorating the Danmark Restaurant in Urbanisation Los Angeles to make it look just right for their Cattlemens Ball. The ball took place on 26th January and you could spot every character from every wild west film you’ve ever watched and all for a good cause. All the money raised at events such as this goes to charity. The charities to be supported this year have not yet been decided, but in April, at their AGM meeting, members will vote on where they would like to donate the money. Last year they raised over €3,000 and this was split between AECC, Butterfly Children, San José Obrero Orphanage and Reach Out. Following the decision, the charities are presented with their cheques at the Presentation Dance which will take place on April 26th.Not surprisingly, this will also be an opportunity to dress up and engage in a little westerner role play too. The purpose of the Cattlemens Ball, however, is simply to raise money along with having a good time, of course. After the meal, music and dancing was planned to take the participants to just before midnight. Cherry K & Red Strokes were all set up to entertain with country

music and singing. These wild west balls are actually a harmonious affair. Although there may be plenty of guns around the building Christine assures me that there’s never been any trouble in the nine years of holding the event. People come from far and wide to attend. At this year’s ball a group of people have come from Benidorm for the night’s entertainment and are stopping over in a local hotel. Raffles are a key feature of each evening such as this and with a range of quality donations, they are a regular

source of income for the charity fund. There is a slightly unusual twist to the way in which the prizes are allocated. Each prize comes tagged with a playing card. Those people who win, take a card from a pack to decide which prize they collect. Since the club began in 2009 the number of members has grown from 14 to over 40. They meet on the first Wednesday of every month in The Tavern at Lo Crispin at 3pm. The meeting begins with a review of what’s happening but there’s also opportunity to practise their fast draw skills, and the target? Balloons.

The group not only organise events such as the Cattlemens Ball but they also perform re-enactments. One of the latest of these was at Carmen’s Bar where they entertained everyone with ‘Shootout at the Tombstone Jail’ in aid of the San José Obrero Orphanage appeal. Now, they are practising two trilogies, the Mexican and American trilogy, for future performances. Los Pistoleros are always happy to welcome new members and friends and if you would like to come along and meet them at their Wednesday meeting you will be very welcome. Suzanne O’Connell

Fire suicide attempt leaves seven injured The fire was started in an apartment full of rubbish in the El Palmeral block of flats near Los Locos beach. It is believed that the owner of the apartment deliberately set fire to it in a bid to end his own life but instead seven people were injured, including two fire fighters, in what was a dramatic evacuation and rescue. The fire service was called out at about 5.20pm on 23rdJanuary when smoke was spotted from one of the apartment blocks in this popular residential urbanisation. Fifteen people had to be evacuated from the block of flats which was made particularly difficult due to lack of visibility from the smoke. Five of those forced to leave the apartments were affected by smoke inhalation and had to be treated in hospital. Two of those rescued were children of nine and five years old. The source of the fire was a flat on the first floor and the first to arrive at the scene was a Guardia Civil patrol. They tried to enter the house using two fire extinguishers and attempted to rescue the owner and put out the flames. However, they were soon knocked back by the fire’s intensity and the rescue had to continue from the balcony. The injuries were the result of inhaling the dense, poisonous smoke which came from the apartment and was made particularly toxic due to the squalid conditions of the flat and the huge amount of paper and rubbish stored there. Two residents were rescued from a corridor on the second floor. They had come down from the sixth floor but had been unable to go any further due to the

thick smoke and were lying on the floor and disorientated when found. Other residents were unable to leave their flats due to the thick smoke and were rescued from their balconies. Initially there were problems in the rescue operation due to technical faults with the equipment. It is believed that the flat’s owner had had his electricity cut off and was using candles to light it. He had been involved in numerous arguments with his neighbours who were unhappy at the state of the flat and saw the use of candles as a fire risk. There had been conflict with one of the neighbours shortly before the incident as the owner had accumulated a lot of junk, scrap and rubbish in his flat. The firemen used thermal cameras to check that there was no one else left inside the block once each floor was evacuated. Along with the 15 people removed from the building were five pets.

The two police officers at the centre of the rescue have already been recognised for bravery. They saved the lives last year of three children who were drowning off the coast of Torrevieja. The street, Mariano Ruiz Cánovas, had to be closed to traffic for two hours and firefighters remained on the scene until 2pm. The flat which was the source of the fire was completely destroyed and another five floors of the building were affected. The second floor apartments were particular damaged due to heat and smoke rising from the flat below. . It is alleged that the fire was started as part of a suicide attempt. The two Guardia Civil managed to access the house eventually through the balcony and arrested the man and removed him. A task made more difficult due to his agitated behaviour. Suzanne O’Connell

Pioneering Spanish surgery on ‘inoperable’ pancreatic cancer patient Spanish doctors have performed ground-break surgery on a patient with terminal Stage 4 pancreatic cancer for the first time in the country’s history. Surgeons at the Vall d’Hebron Hospital in Barcelona successfully treated the patient who had previously been considered ‘inoperable’. The pioneering surgery involves a new technique which punctures the tumour, penetrating through its protective ‘shield’, allowing cancerous cells to be burned away with heat. It is the first time this advanced procedure has been used in Spain on pancreatic adenocarcinoma, which is inoperable with traditional techniques. Until now patients with this aggressive form of cancer could only be offered palliative chemotherapy. The breakthrough comes as the result of a clinical trial at the hospital called

PELICAN, which is also being tested at 18 medical centres across Europe by a team of Dutch experts. Elisabeth Pando, a doctor at the Hepatobiliary and Transplant Surgery Service, stressed that the trial ‘is about offering an alternative or a treatment’ for those who are usually considered inoperable. Pancreatic cancer is the third leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. Doctors predict that by 2019 it will be the second cause of death, while only one in five cases can be operated on. Experts say the reason is because pancreatic tumours are usually very close to arteries and major veins. Despite the team’s success, Pando stresses the study is still in its early experimental phase and more time is needed to obtain definitive results.

Torrevieja’s social spending shock Figures suggest that the amount that Torrevieja spends on social services is the lowest in the Vega Baja. The most money is spent in La Vila Joiosa which spends €168 per person in comparison to Torrevieja’s €24. The figures have been compiled by the Asociación de Directoras y Gerentes de Servicios Sociales (Association of Directors and Managers of Social Services) and are based upon the data for 2017 from towns of more than 20,000 inhabitants given to the Ministry of Finance. The study showed that La Vila Joiosa spent €168 for each resident in benefits or aid, more than €100 more than the national

average which is €67. The organisation collected data from 404 town halls and the study has been taking place over the past three years. This is the first time that a town hall within the Alicante province has been commended for its excellence in social spending. The town hall of La Vila Joiosa directs one euro from every five in its budget to social care. ‘For us it is a priority,’ explained the mayor of the town, socialist Andreu Verdú. He attributes the high figure to their success in obtaining subsidies such as money to make beaches accessible, help looking for work and support for those struggling to meet the cost of

their electricity bills. The town has 33,000 inhabitants. In contrast, Torrevieja is included as one of the 40 lowest spenders when it comes to social works. It’s estimated that its spending works out at €24 for each of its 83,000 citizens. Torrevieja never does well in financial studies. It has an unusual population with many foreigners who may be less likely to appeal to social services for support. It’s also claimed that there are a number of social benefits in the town that are not counted in this survey. For example, the entitlement to free public transport at the cost of €7 card renewal each year.

“la Vilajoyosa spends one in every five euro on social care”

By a whisker, the budget was passed Torrevieja’s minority government managed to get sufficient support for their provisional budget during the council meeting held on 21st January. It was a very close thing and approval was secured due to the absence of one of the PP councillors who is currently in Australia. There were 12 votes in favour, comprising votes from PSOE, Los Verdes, APTCe and IU with the support of the two Sueña councillors. Against were 10 votes from the PP councillors and two from the Ciudadanos party. The casting vote was held by the mayor, José Manuel Dolón, who tipped the scale in favour. Although the budget is only provisional at this stage, there are a limited number of adjustments that can be made during the next stage of its passage through the town council. It’s an important achievement that will mean whichever councillors are elected in May will have something to work with. The meeting wasn’t without controversy, however. Outside the boards and placards of the charity APANEE were on clear show. They are unhappy because they have not yet received the town hall financial assistance for 2018. APANEE is a charity that helps support children and young people with disabilities. Although many of the protestors waited outside, one parent had to be ejected from the council room. The budget session lasted for more than three hours during which APANEE continued to demand that every means possible be used to ensure that they receive their 2018 budget. Without the subsidy of €40,000 they state that they

may not be able to continue with their work. The town council budget totals 90 million euros and intends to take forward some projects that have been waiting for three years for implementation. It was a lucky strike for the local council who had only ten councillors out of a possible 25 who they could count on to vote in favour. Fortunately, Sueña supported the budget’s passage and the absence of the one opposition councillor saw it approved. There were some arguments about

when and with what knowledge the meeting was convened. The ruling council claim that they did not know at the time of deciding the date that the councillor would be in Australia for a month. The PP claim that they knew and that planning it at this time was a deliberate act. In allegations of bluff and counter bluff, it’s even been claimed that perhaps the councillors in the opposition planned the absence of their colleague deliberately. This way a budget could be passed but without them having to support it

publicly. The accusations continue. The budget will now be open to public scrutiny and individuals, groups and parties can raise issues for debate in the final approval session in around a month’s time. At this meeting, it is expected that the PP will be able to voice their objection in full. However, Councillor Fanny Serrano has stated that only technical challenges can be made and very specific points altered. The budget as a whole cannot be amended going forward. APANEE is currently helping to support 80 children with severe special needs and

the cost of this is not covered by public health care. The councillor for the budget, José Hurtado, told the protestors that the issue would be dealt with in the next few months. The problem appears to have arisen due to missing documentation from regional administration. The delay has not been exclusive to this year. It is claimed that in almost every year since 2013 a similar delay has been experienced with the subsidies eventually being paid between February and June. Suzanne O’Connell

Serious injuries in road crash Two cars were involved in the crash on the CV-95 at 8.50 on 23rdJanuary. The incident happened by the access to the AP-7 roundabout from San Miguel de Salinas. The CV-95 was closed for half an hour as the occupants of the cars were taken care of and the road was cleared. The driver of one of the cars, a middleaged British man, was seriously injured. The impact was so great that his car turned over and landed in the ditch next to the road. One of the cars crashed into

the side of the other car, it’s believed, because it had drifted onto the wrong side of the road. Fire fighters from Torrevieja attended the scene and had to use cutting equipment to free the British man who was trapped in the overturned car. The road is one of the main access and exit roads from Torrevieja. It is also a key road linking the Vega Baja with Orihuela and this busy route has been a cause of concern for some time.

Torrevieja’s accessible submarine Torrevieja submarine, El Submarino delfín-61 was given to Torrevieja in 2004 by the Spanish Navy and now forms part of its floating museum. Visitors have long been welcome on the submarine which gives them a flavour of what it’s like to live in such cramped conditions under the water. Now, it’s been made accessible for those with limited mobility too. Councillor Fanny Serrano has announced that it is the first in the world to open its ‘hatch’ to people with reduced mobility. This new development was announced at the launch of FITUR, the Tourism Fair, which began in Madrid last week. The idea itself came from the FITUR convention two years ago when representatives from Torrevieja saw other tourist routes being made more accessible. ‘Torrevieja prides itself on being an inclusive city,’ explained councillor Serrano. ‘It wasn’t going to be easy to enable access but we thought it was worth the effort.’ The submarine is currently visited by more than 20,000 people each year. Now

it can welcome even more. Valencia has its own accessible tourism plan with five separate strategies and 33 specific actions. This ground breaking step has been welcomed by the Navy and it is hoped that other towns will follow the

example. The work to enable access to the submarine was done by ‘Cibes Lift Ibérica’ for whom it proved to be a complex task but took it on as a personal challenge. Suzanne O’Connell

GBP / EUR UPDATE Once again Brexit was the key issue to influence the pound. News that sales fell 0.9% in December did not come as a complete shock. Analysts had predicted such a result as Christmas spending was brought forward to Black Friday/Monday, resulting in a strong 1.3% increase in November but it’s not clear whether sterling fell due to these data or Brexit concerns. Rightmove's index put UK house prices 0.4% higher on the month and year and the pound gained an average of 0.6%, adding half a euro cent, three quarters of a US cent and one Japanese yen. It is up by an average of 1.4% on the week and 1.8% on the month. The reason appears to less to do with the ecostats but because the market believes that Parliament will prevent Britain's departure from the EU without a deal. There was some assistance from the employment numbers, however; unemployment fell to 4.0%, a 43-year low, and more people were in work than ever before. Even more important to investors was the upward progress of wages. Basic pay was up by 3.3% on the year and total earnings, including bonuses, were 3.4% higher. It represents a real increase in earnings after 2.1% inflation is taken into account. This, coupled with the optimism that parliament will prevent a no-deal Brexit assisted the pound. Midweek, sterling strengthened by an average of 0.9%. Compared with a week ago the pound was up by 1.8% with its closest competitor, the NZ dollar, 1.1% behind. However, Michel Barnier had a sobering warning for those relying on a positive outcome to the latest tussle over Brexit, saying,

"Leaving the EU without a deal is the default scenario and there appears to be a majority in the House of Commons to oppose a no-deal. But opposing no-deal will not stop no-deal from happening at the end of March." There was no major news in Europe to influence the euro. German producer prices increased by 1.7% in 2018; data on Tuesday showed a slight erosion of investor confidence in Germany while in the euro zone as a whole it was roughly unchanged. The euro did make some gains, appearing to be pulled higher by the gains made by the pound. The biggest event for the euro came towards the end of the week when European Central Bank president Mario Draghi, who warned in a speech that the risks surrounding the outlook for the eurozone economy had risen, with nearterm growth likely to be weaker than previously anticipated. The euro hit a fresh low for the month during the press conference. The shared currency fell as low as $1.1305, down 0.7 per cent and a level last touched on December 17. It subsequently bounced back to $1.1358, leaving the common currency down 0.2 per cent for the session. It wasn’t all doom and gloom; Draghi highlighted “supportive financing conditions, favourable labour market dynamics” and rising wage growth as factors which may bring inflation closer to the ECB’s target, but highlighted that the bank was monitoring the “persistency” of risk factors, including Brexit, the US-China trade war, and a slowing of the economy in China, which is likely to have a knockon effect on global trade.

The comparsas prepare for Carnival More than 35 comparsas will take part in Torrevieja’s annual carnival next month. A comparsa is a group whose role it is to take part in processions of this kind. Some that participate are representing dance schools and other organisations. There are also one or two primary schools in the town that have representatives at these types of events. This year’s carnival will reach its peak on 17th February with the night time procession. However, judging of the different groups will take place during the daytime procession on Sunday 11th February. It is expected that there will be 31 local comparsas taking part and half a dozen from elsewhere. In the run up to the processions there are a number of individual events including the crowning of the carnival queens which takes place at the auditorium. This year María Grao from the comparsa ‘Blanca de Sal’ will be the infant queen and Cheyene Heredia from the comparsa ‘Y punto’ will be the adult queen. On 2nd February there will be the Drag Queen gala and on Saturday 10th February is the Chirigotas competition, both are also being held at the auditorium. Tickets for these events can be obtained from the theatre ticket office in Plaza Miguel Hernández from between 11am and 1pm and 5pm to 7pm.

On Saturday 3rd February there is a family day in the Plaza del Sagrado Corazón with bouncy castles, raffles and a paella for 120 people. This is free to attend. Overall, the carnival programme costs around €60,000 and prizes are given for the winning comparsas. The prizes for 2017 will now be paid out although it is unlikely that the 2016 prizes will be honoured. This is due to the correct

measures not being in place for council expenditure at the time. Other events to note include on Friday 16th February when Habaneras shopping centre will host the carnival children’s dance. There will be a photograph competition on Instagram of pictures taken during the carnival season which lasts from 28th January until 25th February. Suzanne O’Connell

Do you know how your pension is invested? How to understand your retirement savings and pull them together to work harder • Consolidating your old pensions into one easyto manage pension can cut costs • A Sipp is a good option for those looking to broaden their investment choices

D

o you have an old workplace pension but haven't a clue about how your money is invested or have old pensions that you've lost track of? If so, you're not alone. The responsibility to save for retirement is increasingly falling to individuals, but many people struggle to connect with how their workplace pension is performing, or what happened to old pots. Most people worked for a number of different employers over the course of their careers and, as a result, end up with several different pension pots. However, left in an old employer's pension scheme, your money is at risk from high charges and poor performance. An obvious remedy to this is to consolidate your old pensions into one easy‐to‐manage pension. Many people therefore choose to open a self‐invested personal pension ‐ a Sipp ‐ that offers them a much wider choice of funds and other investment options. Put simply, Sipps are a type of do‐ it‐yourself private pension that allow savers to cherry pick from thousands of investments to create a portfolio tailored to their individual appetite for risk and investment objectives. This can include funds, investment trusts and shares. Bear in mind that you'll be responsible for making your own investment decisions and managing your portfolio which is by no means an easy feat. If you’re not comfortable tackling big decisions on your own, then this is where Seagate can help you. Bush beans, also called snap beans because they "snap" when ripe, are by far the most popular homegrown beans. Tender, with a delicate taste and no strings, they are easy to grow and cook - and delicious to eat! 3. Water properly Bush beans like a regular supply of water. That said however, beans do NOT like wet, or poorly drained soil. In order to make sure the soil drains well, and your beans do not rot, add plenty of organic matter such as compost before planting. Give the beans regular water, and allow the plants to dry out a bit in between waterings. The only time you want the soil to be constantly damp is right after you have sown the seeds. Watering the seeds: When sowing in the spring, sow the seeds 1 inch (2.5 cm) deep; in the hot weather of summer, sow the seeds 2 inches (5 cm) deep. Then soak the seed bed thoroughly with water, and try not to water

Below you will find 10 tips that are guaranteed to germinate. Inoculate them: Beans are like peas and to bring you the best, tastiest, and most other “nitrogen-fixing” legumes in that beans productive bush bean crop ever: can pull nitrogen right out of the air because soil-dwelling bacteria forms nodules on their 1. Wait for warm weather Beans like warm soil, so for best germination roots. But this can happen only if the soil when sowing your seeds, wait until the soil naturally has this helpful bacteria. If the soil temperatures are warmer than 16° C (60° F). If has no such bacteria, your beans will not do as you plant the seeds in cold soil, the beans will well. So take a few minutes before you plant your germinate very slowly leaving them seeds and inoculate them by coating them vulnerable to rot and soil-borne diseases. with a powdered form of rhizobium bacteria. It is a good insurance to give your seeds to ensure 2. Prepare bean seeds for planting Soak them: For extra fast germination, soak they grow the best they can. Even if your soil the seeds in water for 30 minutes before already has plenty of the nitrogen-fixing planting, or put the seeds between two damp bacteria, adding some inoculant is never going again until the beans sprout so that the soil paper towels the night before planting. By the to hurt anything. does not become soggy or waterlogged. next day, the seeds will be swollen and ready

If your soil tends to dry out quickly, or to form a crust, cover the seed bed with a very thin layer of mulch or compost after you plant to keep the soil surface moist and soft. This helps the bean's growing tip from breaking off as it pushes though the soil. If your soil dries out even with the mulch, do water again. Always keep sown seed beds damp. If they dry out, the seeds will die. 4. Plant bush beans very close together Bush beans do not mind being crowded and will still produce a good crop. The best reason for planting them fairly close together is you want the leaves of the plants to grow into a shade canopy that will cool the soil and stop weeds from growing. Plant bean seeds in “blocks” or rows 2 to 3 inches (5 to 7.5 cm) apart and do not thin when they come up. 5. Make sure to rotate Rotating your crops will help prevent a build up of these diseases at each location. 6. Keep bush beans weeded Snap beans have very shallow roots that cannot compete with weeds for water and nutrients, so try and keep your beans well weeded. 7. Bush beans like mulch Especially here where summers are hot and dry, mulch your beans to help keep the moisture in the soil. 8. Bush beans do not like super high heat

Beans will stop producing about a week after any hot spell that is over 32° C (90° F). To avoid this, either cover your bush beans with shade cloth structures to help them weather through or plant early in the spring, or towards the end of summer to miss most of the high heat days. 9. Stagger your planting Because bush beans tend to produce their beans all at once, harvest will only last about 2 weeks. By staggering your planting, it will help keep a steady supply of beans throughout the summer. 10. Keep bush beans picked Regular harvesting is the number one way to guarantee a prolonged bean harvest. You should pick your beans at least every other day, and you should pick your beans before their pods swell and fill up with seeds. When the seeds finish forming inside the pods, it sends a signal to the plant to stop growing, which is something you do not want, so keep those beans picked. Also, when beans pods get too big, they are not as tender and tasty as when they are young. Whether you call them string beans, snap beans, green beans, or bush beans, they are one of the most favoured vegetables for gardeners to grow during the summer months. They have high quality flavour, and last a long time once harvested, making them easy to handle and cook with. By following the above tips you will have even more success with your beans and that simply means more for you to eat and enjoy! Marc Vijverberg

Chinese New Year 2019 – Year of the Pig Chinese New Year is celebrated by more than 20 percent of the world. It’s the most important holiday in China and to Chinese people everywhere. You probably know there are 12 Chinese zodiac animals used to represent years, 2019 is the year of the Pig and the year begins next Tuesday 5th February. The general consensus is that the zodiacs originally had something to do with the worship of animals. A zodiac system has existed in Chinese culture since the Qin dynasty, more than 2,000 years ago. Zodiac signs play an integral part in Chinese culture, and can be used to determine your fortune for the year, marriage compatibility, career fit and even the best times to have a baby. The Pig is the twelfth of all zodiac animals. According to one myth, the Jade Emperor said the order would be decided by the order in which they arrived to his party. Pig was late because he overslept. Another story says that a wolf destroyed his house. He had to rebuild his home before he could set off. When he arrived, he was the last one and could only

take twelfth place. The Pig is also associated with

the Earthly Branch hài, and the hours 9–11 in the night. In terms of yin and yang, the Pig is yin. In Chinese culture, pigs are the symbol of wealth. Pigs have a beautiful personality and are blessed with good fortune in life. Recent years of the Pig are: 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007, 2019. Pig People born in the year of the Pig think logically and are able to fix whatever problem they're in. They aren't good communicators, but they're kind and able to provide for the family.

Most of them are wealthy. Their only obvious fault is that they lose their temper easily. Maybe you think your zodiac year will be lucky. It's your year after all. However, it's the total opposite. It's seen as a hurdle you have jump over. The way to protect yourself from evil spirits and bad fortune is to wear red underwear every day for the entire year. Even in modern times, it's still treated as a real concern. In some places, married men even have to be accompanied by their wives when they go out at night during their year! • Science Pig is Yin, and its earthly branch is Hài. • Hours 21:00–23:00. At night, the pig can be heard rustling around. In order to fatten it up, the farmer must feed before calling it a day. • Folklore Pigs are the symbol of wealth. Their chubby faces and big ears are signs of fortune as well. • Compatibility Best match: Tiger Best group: Rabbit, Goat Incompatible: Snake

WELCOME TO TORREMOLINOS with Vivalia Travel Torremolinos is a municipality on the Costa del Sol of the Mediterranean, immediately to the west of the city of Málaga, in the province of Málaga in the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain.

In 2013 it had 69,389 inhabitants, making it the sixth largest city in the province. The township has an area of 20 km² and a population density of 3,153.85 inhabitants/km², which is multiplied during the summer months. It is particularly popular with British, Irish and Scandinavian tourists and has a large British expatriate population. Areas of the town are spotted with older high-rise residential buildings and hotels but height limits on new developments and a significant number of original old town properties, have kept the town centre much more open than other popular resorts such as Benidorm and Fuengirola. The beach which extends for nearly 8 kilometres, has cycle and skating lanes alongside the fully illuminated promenade and features many chiringuitos and beach bars. The Eastern end of the beach known as Los Alamos has live dance music events throughout the Summer. The easternmost parts of the beach have kite surfing and windsurfing except under the flight path of the airport. There are two separate beach lifts, a wheelchair accessible footpath and steps from the town centre to the beach. Though there are many parking spaces on the beach road, it is almost impossible to park in the Summer months. The town centre does have many underground car parks however. History Archaeological finds including human bones, tools, and pottery prove that the Torremolinos area was settled as early as the Neolithic Age. Some remnants are neanderthalians and dated 150,000 years old by radiocarbon dating. According to the Egyptian Greek geographer Ptolemy, the Phoenicians had founded here a colony named Saduce, but the Romans are the most likely to have founded the current town, as shown by findings of edifices and a necropolis (from whose size it has been deduced that the settlement had around 2,000 inhabitants). They also built the road joining Cadiz with Málaga, passing through Torremolinos. With the Moorish conquest of Spain, were introduced the mills from which the town takes its name (meaning “Tower of the Mills”). However, at the time the population was reduced; the tower was built by the Nasrid rulers of Granada starting from 1300. After the fall of Granada, the town remained subject to North African pirate attacks which lasted from the 18th century; during the War of Spanish Succession, the town was attacked by an Anglo-Dutch flotilla under the British admiral George Rooke and almost entirely destroyed. The mills and the city were rebuilt in the early 20th century,

but the mill industry started to decline in the 1920s. It was largely replaced by an increasing tourist interest from 1928, particularly British visitors. Hotel Pez Espada opened in 1960. The first gay bar in Spain, Toni’s Bar, was founded in Torremolinos in 1962. Pre-Roman According to Ptolemy, Phoenicians built the city of Saduce next to Torremolinos. The Romans constructed a road to connect Gades (Cádiz) with Malaca (Málaga). In the 1990s a Roman necropolis was discovered with 23 graves at the “San Luis build” at Cantabria’s square, which confirm the existence of village with 2,000 years old. Middle Ages Around 1300, the Muslim dynasty of the “Nazríes”, which governed Málaga between the 13th and 15th centuries, built the defensive tower that can be seen at the end of San Miguel Street. The tower is 12 metres (39’37 ft.) tall and was built with earth. It is composed of two floors and watch windows to the sea and a terrace. Before French revolution After the Christian conquered the kingdom of Granada, Torremolinos was attacked by pirates until the 18th century. During the War of Spanish succession, an Anglo-Dutch fleet, commanded by the British Admiral George Rooke, looted and burned the houses and mills and destroyed all of Torremolinos. A census of 1,769 shows a population of 106 people. Modern age During the first half of the 19th century the town was rebuilt and by 1849 there were 14 mills, a fuller mill Kraft paper and 785 inhabitants. With the demise of the mill, Torremolinos became a small fishing village until the end of the 1950s when it became one of the first tourist centre in Costa del Sol. In the 1950s many celebrities visited Torremolinos such as Grace Kelly, Ava Gardner, Marlon Brando, Orson Welles and Frank Sinatra. In 1959 Pez Espada hotel was opened, the first luxury hotel along the coast. In the following years, new hotels, nightclubs and others tourist establishments changed the face of the town and its beaches. By the year 1965, Torremolinos had become consolidated as a major tourist destination.

Eight Spanish beaches among Europe’s best A definitive list of Europe’s best beaches has been created by more than 1,200 travel journalists, editors, bloggers and agencies. The survey results were reported to the tours opertoe Flight Network, which complied the list. Shipwreck Beach on the Greek island of Zakynthos came in at first place, with Reynisfjara Beach in Iceland in second place. However, as Icelandic summers tend to be about 16 degrees at the warmest, Spain is probably a much better option if it’s warmth you’re seeking and with no fewer than eight beaches in the list, it’s a great place to start if sun, sea and sand are among your priorities. The only one in our region is Cala de Ambolo (Jávea). However, the tourist board in this northern Alicanteprovince coastal town was surprised to find the Ambolo Cove had made it to number 47 on the 'Europe's Best Beaches' list – mainly because it's shut. One of its attractions was the challenging cliff-path trek downwards – and also what kept mass tourism away, leaving it as a peaceful enclave for those who were up to the hike – but at the moment, it is, in fact, too challenging for Jávea to recommend

it, and signs warn visitors not to try to enter because of the high risk of rock falls. As a result, it has no lifeguard service. But locals and regular Jávea visitors are hoping one day soon it will be restored and reopened, since those who defy the danger warnings have good reason to do so: apart from its being one of the few nudist beaches in the province, its rocky landscape, powdery sand, crystal-clear waters with an emerald tinge, stunning view of the uninhabited Isla del Descubridor ('Discoverer's Island'), unrivalled sub-aquatic fauna and flora making it something of a watery art gallery for snorkelers and secluded, rural location mean for as long as this tantalising treasure remains closed off, beachgoers truly do feel as though they've been locked out of heaven. SPAIN’S RICHEST AND POOREST POSTCODES More than €100,000 separates the average income of Spain’s richest area – La Moraleja in Alcobendas in Madrid – from the poorest – Carrús in Elche in the eastern coastal city Alicante. The average income of families in La Moraleja, located in the north of the capital, is €113,642 – eight times that of Carrús, where it is just €13,286, according to figures published recently by the Tax Agency. For the first time, Spain’s Finance Ministry has allowed income statistics to be viewed by postcode. This has highlighted the inequality not only between municipalities but also between neighbourhoods in the same area. The data, taken from 2016 tax records, includes income figures of 33 Spanish cities where the population is greater than 200,000 people, or where the population is lower but more than 100,000 tax returns have been filed or the total gross income is more than €2.2 million. The data does not include figures from the Basque Country or Navarre given that they have their own tax agencies. Of the 10 areas with the highest income, five are in the capital, three in Barcelona and two in municipalities in the region of Madrid: Pozuelo de Alarcón and Alcobendas. The average income of the 10 wealthiest areas is

€65,468. The average income in La Moraleja is double that of the secondrichest area, Vallvidrera-Tibidabo i Les Planes in Barcelona, where it is €65,700. Three of Spain’s poorest areas are located in Elche in the Valencia region, according to the statistics. In Elche, more than a third (36%) of taxpayers were in the tax base between zero and €6,010. Only 2 percent

of the population declared more than €60,101. Local province Murcia is also home to three of the country’s most disadvantaged areas. Areas in the cities of Jerez de la Frontera in Cádiz, Córdoba in Andalusia and Alicante in Valencia also fall at the bottom of the list. The average income of these areas is just over €14,700. The figures published by the Tax Agency are based on tax returns of taxpayers

living in these postcodes. The average income of all the analyzed areas is €24,167. The Tax Agency has provided figures for most of the postcodes of the cities studied. In cases where there were too few taxpayers, the agency decided to aggregate them to preserve statistical confidentiality. Prosperous The most prosperous areas were concentrated in big cities such as Madrid and Barcelona, with Valencia (Pla de Remei in Eixample) and Palma de Mallorca (Sant Jaume) being the only exceptions. The 30 postcodes or areas with the lowest average income are all located in cities in Andalusia, Valencia and Murcia. In Madrid, almost 138,000 people earn more than €60,101 and in Barcelona that figure is over 67,000. In 2016, a study by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) analysed for the first time the wealth inequality between areas as part of a European Union project called Urban Audit. This study looked at the characteristics of 484 areas in 16 Spanish municipalities with more than 250,000 people, using data from 2012. The Madrid locations El Viso and La Piovera were found to have the highest income while Seville, specifically the 5-A and 4-E zones, were found to be the poorest, with just over €12,000.

Spanish Catholic Church hid abuse cases for decades

F

or decades, the Spanish Catholic Church has been keeping quiet on the majority of sexual abuse cases involving minors of which it had knowledge or tried in its ecclesiastical courts. The facts of these incidents were not passed on to the public prosecutor, nor were sentences imposed against paedophile priests made public, apart from a handful of exceptions – most of which were forced. The problem that most concerns Pope Francis, paedophilia in the Church, is only partially public knowledge in Spain thanks to cases that have been dealt with by the regular courts. According to judicial records, judges have issued 33 rulings against priests over the last 30 years, for the abuse of 80 minors. The sentences have ranged from economic fines to up to 21 years in jail. Some of the sentences included compensation payments to the victims of between €1,200 and €70,000. Spain has 23,000 parishes and 18,000 clergymen. The judicial sentences for paedophilia affect under 0.2 percent of the clergy. In half a dozen of the known rulings, the proven facts explain how the victims first reported the abuse to the Church, and, given the lack of a response, decided to turn to the courts. While Spain’s Criminal Code punishes the abuse of minors with years of jail time, the ecclesiastical

courts apply the Canonical Code, which only envisions the suspension of priestly duties during a set amount of time, or, in very serious cases, expulsion from the priesthood. Pope Francis, who has committed to cleaning up the image of the Church with an iron fist policy with regard to paedophilia, has called a conference in February of next year of all of the heads of the Episcopal Conferences the world over, where the issue of abuse of minors will be tackled. The Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith, the ministry from the Holy See that applies canonical

law in cases of paedophilia that arrive from all over the world, has published a brief summary of its disciplinary action since 2012. Every year, between 400 and 500 cases of child abuse are received, although the information supplied by the Congregation does not specify which countries they come from. EL PAÍS asked the Vatican for the number of cases that come from Spain, but did not receive a response. Despite the impenetrability of the Church, Pope Francisco appears determined to convey to the bishops the need to be implacable with

regard to the known cases of sex crimes. The opacity of the Spanish Catholic Church and its lack of cooperation with the justice system suffered a serious blow in March 2010, when Pope Benedict XVI made public his Pastoral Letter to the Catholics of Ireland, a country that has severely suffered the child abuse scandal in its Church, and approved new rules to deal with the problem. It ordered the Episcopal Conferences to draw up a protocol with preventive measures and clear lines of action in ecclesiastical judicial processes. Several months after that papal instruction, the Spanish Episcopal Conference drew up its protocols in order to assume the rules imposed from Rome. The protocol states that “if there are rational indications of a criminal offense being committed, the ecclesiastical authority invites or advises the claimant to file a report themselves with the police, the public prosecutor or the courts.” Seven years after that document from the Episcopal Conference, at least three of the 70 dioceses (Sigüenza, Astorga and Burgos) have approved wider protocols in which it is considered to be “essential” that the bishops “notify the specialised services and the prosecutor” of the information they hold. Secrecy Since 2010, there have only been two cases where dioceses – Ciudad Real and

Castellón – have informed the public prosecutor of the complaints of abuse received within the Church. The two abuse cases to have caused the most social uproar in recent years – the Romanones case in Granada, and the La Bañeza Seminary case in León – were handled by their respective dioceses with secrecy. Only the victims’ discontent with the treatment received by the Church prompted the ecclesiastic processes to be made public. In the Romanones case in Granada, the claimant turned to the public prosecutor after losing trust in the ecclesiastical court that had begun investigating the case. During the trial, the priest’s lawyer called for one of the pieces of evidence to be excluded: the testimony of three priests who were questioned by the Granada diocese ecclesiastical court. The lawyer argued that these statements were protected by “pontifical secrecy,” and that as such a constitutional right was being violated. The court recognised the complexity of the legal problem raised by the lawyer of the priest in Granada, and accepted excluding the evidence given that none of the sides had made reference to it during the trial. But he made clear that there had been no violation of canonical procedure given that it was Rome – the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith – that had authorized the Bishop of Granada to voluntarily hand over the testimony of the priests. In the end, the Granada High Court acquitted the main defendant.

It is always about him

I want to break up

My husband and I are emigrating soon. We have a leaving party booked when all family and friends are invited. My step-brother has a new girlfriend whom we haven’t met, and he wanted to bring her along to introduce her to everyone. I have no problem with this, however he has always felt he is self entitled and likes to get his own way. His girlfriend is working on the night of our party. He said to me ‘we will have it on the Saturday so that she can attend‘. I calmly said that we weren’t changing it, and it would be on the date planned. My father couldn’t see why I won’t bend and it’s caused trouble.

My boyfriend and I have a holiday booked and paid for in a few months. It’s a holiday of a life time, however my feelings for him have changed recently and I realise that he is not the one I want to be with. There’s someone else for whom I have feelings. I’ve taken months agonising over whether I want to continue the relationship with my boyfriend. The new guy, also feels the same way about me.

It’s your party, so I would just go ahead with your plans and leave people who don’t consider others to themselves. You are leaving the country soon, so you can go and not have to give this incident a second thought. By the seems of it, emigrating will put some much needed distance between you and your family. Good luck, and all the best.

Firstly, I don’t think you should go on this holiday however much you want to. You don’t want to be with your boyfriend anymore, so you will be going for the wrong reasons, and if you do go I don’t think you will enjoy it as much as if you were going with someone you really want to be with. I would say cancel the holiday and end your relationship with your current boyfriend otherwise it will get messy. Once you are free, you can pursue your feelings for this new guy, and the holiday destination will still be there.

Three reasons why you should accept the first offer

Rebecca Serwotka

Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward – 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today! Featured on Best Buy Spain – Property TV – Sky Channel 189. Ever thought how you would feel when you get your first offer? Excited? Nervous? Scared? Many people would be delighted to receive an offer on their home, but there are others that tend to second guess themselves when a serious offer is on the table.

First of all, if the offer is a sensible one and realistically you could make it work, then don’t look a gift horse in the mouth! You never know when the next offer will come along. Sometimes holding out for a figure that you have in your head, could cost you a sale in the long run. We have always found that the first offer is usually the best one. Here are 3 reasons why accepting the first offer makes the most sense:

1. Unfortunately when properties remain unsold, buyers automatically assume that something’s wrong with it. You don’t want the property to sit on the market longer than it should be, losing value, as buyers are fully aware how long it’s been up for sale, which could ultimately influence their offer amount. So when that offer is forthcoming, as long as it isn’t a “cheeky” one, this could be your best possible buyer. 2. If you need to close this chapter in your life and move on to the next exciting adventure, you must consider with care your first offer. If it means you can move on with your life, then do it. If you’re moving to get away from old memories, then the longer you keep refusing offers, means the longer you have to stay put. Only you are holding yourself back. 3. Found your next home? Most sellers are also on the hunt for their next home, and there’s a chance they’ll also find a house before they’ve found a buyer for theirs. If time is of the essence, and you don’t want to lose your next home, then taking the first sensible offer will be the way to move forward. Selling a home is about more than just money, it’s about how smooth the transaction can be and moving on to the next chapter in your life. Selling your home? Enjoy the journey! Buying a property? We also campaign to improve their lives, organise the Poppy Appeal and remember the fallen.

Stolen Spanish carvings found in English garden A Dutch art detective has returned two priceless stone relics stolen from an ancient Spanish church after tracing them to an English nobleman’s garden where they were displayed as ornaments. Arthur Brand, dubbed the “Indiana Jones of the art world”, said he handed over the centuries-old carvings to the Spanish embassy in London at a private ceremony recently. It was the culmination of a long search for the artworks, which were snatched in 2004 from the Santa Maria de Lara church in northern Spain, believed to be at least 1,000 years old. They turned up in the garden of an aristocratic British family who had unwittingly bought them, and it was there that Brand found them covered in mud and leaves. “These artworks are priceless. To find them in a garden after searching for eight years is just incredible,” the art sleuth told Spanish news agency AFP. “You can imagine how horrified they were to learn that their garden ornaments were in fact priceless stolen Spanish religious art.” The private investigator showed AFP the stone carvings — one of which depicts John the Evangelist, author of one of the Gospels — hours before they were handed back. The stones, said to weigh 50 kilos (110 pounds) each, were then handed to representatives of Spain’s Guardia Civil police force, who are collaborating in the case, and two museum curators from the northern city of Burgos. The Spanish embassy in London declined to comment. The hunt for the artworks could come

straight from a detective novel. The church from which they were stolen is believed to date from the era of the Visigoths, with experts dating it between the seventh and eleventh centuries. But in a huge blow the relics were snatched by professional art thieves in 2004, Brand said. In 2010 the intrepid sleuth first received word from an unnamed British informant that “something strange” had popped up in London, which eventually pointed him to a shadowy man Brand referred to as ‘Mr X’. “It turns out ‘Mr X’ saw a French dealer arriving with the stones by truck in London. They were put on offer as garden ornaments — but Mr X recognised them as possible Visigoth religious artworks,” Brand said. “The guys who stole these wanted to sell it for a couple of million or whatever, but they have soon find out that you cannot sell these, so to make at least a little bit of money, they sold them as garden ornaments,” he said, adding that they were probably sold for around 50,000 pounds each. Brand then tracked down the French dealer, who pointed them towards an unnamed British aristocratic family living north of London. “It ended up in the garden of an English nobleman, who did not know that it was world heritage, where they would stay like 15 years,” he said. The owners were so shocked when told the truth that “they wanted to throw the artworks into a river and let them disappear forever. Fortunately we managed to convinced them not to,” said Brand. It was yet another success for Brand,

who was in the headlines last year for returning a stolen 1,600-year-old mosaic to Cyprus that was found in the possession of a similarly unwitting British family. He won world fame in 2015 after finding “Hitler’s Horses”, two bronze statues made by Nazi sculptor Joseph Thorak. Worthy of Dan Brown The recovery of the artworks could also play an important role in revealing more about the mysterious Santa Maria de Lara church near Burgos. The church was effectively lost for centuries before being rediscovered in 1921 by a local priest and declared a national monument in 1929. Inside, the church has Christian, but also pagan, Roman symbols and Islamic influences — “worthy of a Dan Brown novel,” Brand quipped. The stone relics “are of huge value,” said Rene Payo, art history professor at the University of Burgos. “They are important because not many exist today. There are very little… quantities of Visigoth figurative sculptures,” he told AFP. The Visigoths settled in Spain between the fifth and eighth century after driving out the Romans, but were themselves overthrown by the Moors in 711. The looted artworks could also be “essential” evidence in a debate raging among scholars about the exact age of the church, said Oxford University researcher David Addison. Addison said some believed it was a 7th century building while others dated it to the 10th or 11th centuries. Brand’s return of the artefacts “would be a great service in this regard,” Addison said.

WES NELSON BREAKS SILENCE ON SHOCK SPLIT FROM MEGAN BARTON HANSON AHEAD OF DANCING ON ICE PERFORMANCE: 'IT'S BEEN TOUGH' WES Nelson broke his silence following his split from Megan Barton Hanson. Wes Nelson broke his silence after Megan Barton Hanson took to Instagram to announce their breakup on Saturday, reportedly leaving him "devastated" that she would end things. The Love Island star, 20, took to his Instagram stories to share a video as he takes to the ice for Sunday’s episode of Dancing On Ice. Wes branded this week "tough" as he

urged viewers to tune in and vote for himself and partner Vanessa Bauer, and spoke to his followers while rehearsing for tonight’s performance. He told fans: "It’s that time again. 6pm tonight. Make sure you’re tuning in, make sure you’ve got the app, make sure you’re voting. I’ve worked so hard this week, it’s been a toughie. Please, please vote and show your love." He then joked about the breakup after Megan wrote in her split statement that the couple would "co-parent" their pet hamster, Jon Snow. As co-star Brian McFadden skates up to him, the former Westlife star asks: "How’s the hamster?," before Wes hits back: "We don’t talk about Jon." It comes after reports that Wes is "terrified" that Megan will confront his professional skater partner Vanessa on Sunday’s show following the split announcement. A source told The Sun: "Megan’s jealousy spiralled out of control and she became fairly obsessive about Vanessa. "The split isn’t particularly friendly and he doesn’t understand why she would come down to the show tonight. He is really worried Megan will

confront Vanessa backstage, and really have it out with her. He is dreading a scene." Megan vowed to cheer on her former boyfriend and Vanessa in the competition, despite having previous drama with Vanessa, who she has branded "unprofessional" for not reaching out to her. Megan wrote in her split statement: "I will be down at dancing on ice tomorrow to watch him smash it again. Only one thing left to say come on wes and vanessa! x" KYM MARSH REVEALS TERRIFYING CANCER SCARE AFTER JADE GOODY MOTIVATED HER TO HAVE A SMEAR TEST Kym Marsh has revealed she suffered a terrifying cancer scare after the death of Jade Goody motivated her to go and have a smear test. The Coronation Street star, 42, relived experience in her column for this week's OK! Magazine, explaining she was diagnosed with pre-cancerous cells a decade ago in the same year her premature baby son Archie died

moments after birth in 2009. The actress explained the untimely death of former Big Brother star Jade at the age of just 27 after a battle with cervical cancer encouraged her to get checked out. Kym wrote: 'It was back in 2009 and it was the year I lost Archie – Archie died in the February and then Jade Goody passed away from cervical cancer in the March. 'A few months later, I had my first smear test after losing my son and that’s when I was diagnosed. It was horrific but I went and had the cells removed.' The devastating news came after Kym tragically lost her son Archie who was born prematurely at 18 weeks in February 2009. Kym went on to say she is now

encouraging other women to have a smear test following Cervical Cancer Prevention Week and recently tweeted to urge followers to undergo the procedure. She said: 'It’s cervical cancer prevention week and I cannot stress enough how important it is to go get your smear test. 'It takes a few seconds and it may be uncomfortable and I guess to some embarrassing, but it could SAVE YOUR LIFE!! Heading for mine today. Go get yours! X' In a previous OK! column, the former Hear'Say singer revealed she and boyfriend Scott Ratcliff, 30, were able to feel her 21-year-old daughter Emilie's unborn child kicking for the first time. She wrote: 'Last week I felt Emilie’s baby kick for the first time! 'Before, it was only Emilie who could feel him, but after Scott and I returned from Scotland we both felt him kicking. It’s so exciting! She added: 'Although the baby kept still during Emilie’s recent 20 week scan, they couldn’t get all the measurements they wanted because he wouldn’t move position, so she has to go for another scan soon.'

Online property scams are get more sophisticated, experts warn Authorities in Spain are warning wouldbe buyers and tenants to use common sense when faced with an offer that proposes early payment through uncontrolled channels. “Hi! Thanks for taking the time to look at my property. My name is Ana and I am the owner of the apartment. I am currently working in the UK. If you are interested and want to know more about renting it, get in touch and I will send the

step-by-step procedure.” This is an extract from an email received recently by a property website user who was looking for a place to rent. The ad looked interesting, but when she contacted the owner, she got this response. The original message was written in ‘awkward’ Spanish and its content raised a few alarm bells. Smelling a rat, the would-be tenant reported it to the police and went on looking.

If you think she was being too cautious, think again. As a Civil Guard spokesman points out, the email contains several classic giveaways, one being glaring grammatical errors – Ana used the masculine form of owner ¬(el propietario) as opposed to the feminine (la propietaria). She also said she is in the UK, suggesting that making direct contact with her would be unlikely. But more importantly, the suggested

payment procedure was an attempt at circumventing the checks put in place by the website initially used to make contact. Otherwise, there was nothing odd about the apartment itself. The price was not especially high, and the apartment was attractive but not disproportionate to the suggested rent. “Obviously, the scammers adapt their modus operandi as they go,” says Captain

Alberto Redondo, from the Civil Guard’s cybercrime unit. “What were once clumsy swindles are getting more and more sophisticated.” According to Redondo, cyber crime is climbing by 20 percent every year. While that figure covers all internet fraud, data related to online property scams alone is hard to single out. But what Redondo is clear about is that the scams peak at

One popular property portal says that it detects 10 to 15 fraudulent listings every day and take them down immediately. During peak periods, that number could be as many as 50 a day. Experts warn that there is often a surge of fraudulent activity in February as people begin to plan their Easter break.

The property websites act as a filter, sifting out the main culprits, though some still manage to get through the net. Most professional portals have a team of people casting an eye over new ads, with a procedure that includes a phone call to verify that the contact number is correct. It is rare for anyone to slip through the filters but professionals admit that it is increasingly difficult to spot these types of scam. Another leading property website agreed that it is aware of the increasing professionalism of the scams, which they

It is also worth being wary of anyone who asks for payment in advance, and of properties at suspiciously cheap prices. On Saturday 2nd February at 10am the Grand Opening of an exciting new tattoo and piercing studio on Calle Blanca in Quesada takes place. Andy, Gemma and Steve have successfully run tattoo studios in London for a number of years and now have arrived here in Spain. The company has thousands of stock tattoo images or you can design

your own. All types of tattoo are professionally and hygienically applied including oriental, freehand, tribal, new/old school, portraits, colour or black and grey. The studio also offers laser removal. The team is inviting members of the public to the open day which will feature a champagne reception, buffet, a classic

Football fundraising by the emergency services Torrevieja’s emergency services in conjunction with the town hall are organising a fundraising event on 3rd February. It’s a charity football tournament and the entry fee is a basket of nonperishable food which will be donated to ‘Alimentos Solidarios de Torrevieja’ who collect food for those in need. The sports councillor VíctorFerrández and the councillor for the emergency services, Javier Manzanares have indicated that all the emergency services will take part in the tournament. This includes members of the ambulance service, the fire brigade, the local police, Guardia Civil, Civil Protection Unit and workers from Torrevieja hospital. The event will take place in Torrevieja’s Sport’s City. ‘This initiative demonstrates the charitable nature of our emergency services,’ said Councillor Ferrández. ‘The players, as well as other people participating, can bring their contribution which will be delivered to those in need.’ Each match will have a youth and a veteran team. The idea for this first event of its kind came from Javier Ruiz Lorenzo of the ambulance service. It’s not only about engaging in charitable works. Events such as this are good for camaraderie and this one in particular will demonstrate the united way in which the services work together.

Channel 4

There will be six teams participating, two groups with three teams in each. There will be a semi final between the winners of each group and then the winners of these matches will compete against each other in the grand final. The matches will last around 20 to 25 minutes and will take place simultaneously. The opening of the event will take place at 9.30 am on 3rd February and the first match will take place at 10am followed by another at 10.30 and then 11am. There will be a 15 minute break followed by the semifinals at 12.15. At 12.30 there will be play off for third and fourth place. At 1pm the final will take place. Once the matches have been completed then the trophies will be presented and the event will close. ‘Nobody will leave without a prize. There will be something for every participating team,’ added councillor Ferrández. ‘’There will also be something for the referees and other officials, a prize for the most goals scored and the best goal keeper.’ Each team must have a minimum of seven players and a maximum of 14. They will wear shirts of different colours. The Guardia Civil in green, the local police in blue, the firemen in read and the ambulance services in white. The civil protection unit will be dressed in orange and the health workers in black. Each team will have a captain. Suzanne O’Connell

Footie star Cristiano Ronaldo gets suspend sentence The door of the black van slid open, and out stepped Cristiano Ronaldo, arm-inarm with his girlfriend, Georgina Rodríguez. The sky was gray and the

Madrid air was bitingly cold, but the star soccer player didn’t take off his sunglasses nor did he stop smiling for the cameras for even a moment. Around 50 journalists were waiting for him as he approached the doors of the Madrid High Court. The former Real Madrid striker, who now plays for Italian side Juventus, was at the courthouse to sign his sentence in the presence of a judge. He has been given a 23-month jail sentence and an €18.8 million fine after reaching a deal with the public prosecutor and the Tax Agency, having admitted committing four tax offences between the years of 2011 and 2014. First offenders in Spain who receive less than two years in jail nearly always see their sentences suspended, meaning that Ronaldo will not be going

anywhere near a prison cell. “That’s done, that’s done,” the Portuguese player said as he left the court, after the half-hour administrative procedure. Also at the courthouse on that morning was Xabi Alonso, a former teammate of Ronaldo’s at Real Madrid. He was also there to settle a case of alleged tax fraud. Alonso has opted not to reach a deal with the public prosecutor, which is calling for a five-year prison sentence for tax crimes committed between 2010 and 2012. The Basque player is the only one from a long list of soccer stars who in recent years have been accused of tax fraud to opt for a bench trial to defend his innocence. The process will not, however, be a speedy one. A judge who was due to rule on Alonso’s case has suspended the trial, given doubts over whether 2012 legal reforms mean that the regional High Court has the powers to try him, or whether a lower court should take the case. “If I have the conviction and the confidence that I have done everything properly, that I have collaborated from the start and that I have never hidden anything, I have to defend myself and trust in the justice system,” Alonso told reporters on the morning of his court appearance. “That’s why I have got this far, and I’m going to carry on until the end. For his part, Cristiano Ronaldo has been the focus of legal and media

attention since he broke off negotiations to re-sign with Real Madrid in 2017. As well as his tax woes, he has also been accused of rape, in a case that dates back to 2009 and allegedly took place in Las Vegas, in the United States. As he entered the courtroom this morning, he stopped to sign a single autograph, and when asked by a bystander how he was, replied: “Perfect.” In the case against him, Ronaldo initially denied any wrongdoing, saying that he had “never” hidden anything, and that he “had no intention of avoiding taxes.” But on the advice of his consultants, he ended up accepting the facts of the case against him. The public prosecutor initially accused Ronaldo of fraud worth €14.7 million, but after the deal with the soccer player this figure was lowered to €5.7 million. He will eventually have to pay €19 million, thanks to interest and fines. Other players that have had to do deals with the Spanish courts over tax fraud include Luka Modric, Marcelo, Radamel Falcao, Ángel Di María and Javier Mascherano. The prosecutor believes that the Portuguese player took advantage of a web of companies created in 2010 aimed at hiding the income generated in Spain from his image rights. It also alleges that Ronaldo filed a tax return in 2014 in which he declared €11.5 million of income earned between 2011 and 2014, when the real figure was closer to €43 million.

Barcelona taxi drivers end 'indefinite' strike, Madrid drivers continue Taxi drivers have been on strike in Barcelona for several days and, in Madrid, every single cabbie downed tools. Industrial action by Drivers in Spain's two largest two cities was due to be 'indefinite' until their regional governments reached a mutually-satisfying solution over the presence of alternative road-based transport firms, such as Uber and Cabify, on their streets. The drivers claim these cheaper modern methods are taking away trade and creating unfair competition, and want them to be placed under much stiffer regulation. Protesting taxi drivers filled the streets on foot, carrying placards, or in their cars, blocking major roads in both cities. Madrid cabbies met with their regional transport Minister Rosalía Gonzalo and President Ángel Garrido in an attempt to resolve the issue. Garrido has proposed city councils dictate the length of time required to book an Uber or Cabify ride in advance, so passengers cannot just hail them on the street or call them immediately via a mobile phone App – this being one of the mainstream taxi drivers' associations' complaints, since the majority of their business comes from passing trade. But the taxi drivers themselves wanted this minimum notice period for Cabify and Uber bookings to be enshrined in regional or even national law, not just through local council byelaws which can be changed in an instant when a new mayor gets into power. In Barcelona, taxi drivers announced an indefinite strike from Friday and are taking a much harder line, claiming there are 'zero chances' of their industrial action being called off in the near future.

The regional government of Catalunya has now proposed extending its self-imposed deadline for approving legislation regulating Cabify and Uber services, which has not pleased cab drivers. A large group of protesting cabbies attempted to gain access to the regional Parliament grounds, the Ciutadella Park, to speak to MPs directly, but the regional police blocked their path, resulting in a confrontation that led to three of their officers and a Guardia Civil member suffering minor injuries.

End The drivers in Barcelona finally ended the strike last Thursday, nearly a week after it began. In a vote, a majority decided to accept a new decree proposed by the Catalan government setting out stricter regulations for VTC (vehicle for hire) licenses, which ride-hailing apps in Spain use to operate. Under the proposed terms, users of ridesharing services will have to book their vehicle at least 15 minutes in advance. The new rules, however, leave the door open for this period to be extended to an hour. This would require additional regulatory measures by the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB), an agency with powers over transportation in Barcelona and 35 outlying localities. Meanwhile, authorities in Madrid are still trying to come up with a similar decree to the one developed by the Catalan government. But conflicting viewpoints between city officials, of the leftist Ahora Madrid party, and their regional counterparts, of the Popular Party (PP), have been preventing progress.

Too much tourism...?

World tourism is going from strength to strength, but as the industry gathers in Madrid for one of its largest fairs, the negative impact of its success on local residents is in the spotlight. Chronic overcrowding in cities like Venice and Barcelona is sparking an angry backlash from locals, who complain that a surge in visitors is making life intolerable. Locals complain that home-sharing sites like Airbnb are driving up rents in picturesque city centres, forcing locals out, and they voice concerns over the environmental impact of cruise liners.

“If there are too many people, if people don’t want to come, if those who live here are upset and spend their days protesting, that affects us all. It is not sustainable,” the head of Barcelona-based tourist firm Advanced Leisure Services, Angel Diaz, told Spanish news agency AFP. The issue is a central focus at the Fitur international tourism fair, which got under way Wednesday in Madrid with 10,000 exhibitors and an expected 250,000 visitors. On the programme at the fiveday event are several conferences dedicated to

combating over-tourism and developing responsible, sustainable alternatives. The fair showcases a group of villages in Portugal that stage cultural events outside of the peak tourist season to avoid saturation in the summer. “Tourism brings great benefits. But the (local) community also has to receive those benefits,” said Gloria Guevera, the head of the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), which represents the private tourism sector globally. She cited examples of pro-

active approaches to overtourism such as Croatia’s walled medieval town of Dubrovnik, which staggers arrival times for cruise ships. Another is Amsterdam’s smartphone app that allows tourists to check on queue lengths at the city’s popular museums in real time so they can plan to avoid crowds. Barcelona’s iconic Sagrada Familia church, the city’s most visited tourist attraction, has also turned to technology to better control visitor flows to the site. Sensors were installed at the site in 2016 monitor mobile phone signals, allowing local officials to analyse the flow of people at church and then change visiting hours to the Sagrada Familia and introduce cheaper tickets during less busy hours. Fitur has set up an “observatory” of sustainable tourism called FiturNext to highlight such examples.

“If we multiply the number of visitors by four and that’s it, we are going nowhere,” said Javier Creus of FiturNext. “It is not so much a question of saying ‘come’, but something between ‘come back’ and ‘stay’ because a tourist who wants to come back will want to preserve places,” he added. Surging numbers The number of international tourist arrivals rose by six percent last year to hit a record 1.4 billion, according to an estimate published recently by the World Tourism Organisation.

43

The WTO had forecast in 2010 that international tourist arrivals would not hit the 1.4 billion mark until 2020 — but it said that stronger economic growth, more affordable air travel and easier visa regimes around the world had boosted the market. The Madrid-based UN body may now revise upwards its forecast of 1.8 billion international tourist arrivals in 2030, WTO secretary-general Zurab Pololikashvili said. Mayors from Spanish seaside resorts which have become symbols of mass tourism such as Benidorm — famous for its stretch of beachfront high-rises — gathered at a roundtable on Thursday to discuss responsible tourism and ways to avoid overburdening locals. “Without a doubt, there is a change. We have never talked so much about too much tourism,” Claudio Milano, an anthropologist and lecturer at Barcelona’s Ostelea School of Tourism, told AFP. Tourism accounts for 10.4 percent of global GDP, and for one in 10 of all jobs on the planet, according to the WTTC.

Orihuela promotes tourism at the latest Fitur exhibition

The Councillor for Tourism, Sofía Álvarez, has presented the new campaign that will take place at the International Tourism Fair (Fitur), which is taking place in Madrid (Fitur) and in which Orihuela has been taking part. Both the Mayor of the municipality, Emilio Bascuñana, and the Councillor for Tourism have been at the event. Sofia Alvarez explained that Orihuela has taken part in another Fitur event “which is an absolute must, as it is a showcases locations to the world and is an event where and every one of the tourist destinations that make up the global landscape meet." This year a map has been made with the entire municipality of

Orihuela depicted and a box has been drawn up that includes the gastronomic guides to the coast, the districts and the town of Orihuela. "A gem of a gift, which means that everyone who manages to get a copy can visit the best corners of our municipality," said the Mayor. The Mayor explained that there has been a presentation of gastronomic destinations of the province of Alicante on the main stage of the stand of the Valencian Community in Fitur and also a

presentation of the products of the collaborating companies Bus Sigüenza-Tourist Train, Hisumer, Mateo Wines, Pertusa, Conservas Victoria and Hortidesa-Conservas Delicias Vegetales. A showcooking demonstration was held in collaboration with Oriolan companies and that evening another tasting took place in Callao with the collaboration of the Costa Blanca Board of Trustees, aimed at agents, press and gastronomic critics. On Saturday, a pioneering initiative was carried out which saw an English tourist bus with the Orihuela brand driving through the centre of Madrid. The bus made stops to offer tastings and merchandising. "This English bus is actually a restaurant inside and will make several stops inviting pedestrians to taste the delights of Orihuela gastronomy," said Councillor Alvarez. Finally, the Councillor of Tourism wanted to emphasise that "we are sure that Orihuela will be a leading destination in this Fitur 2019" and she thanked the collaborating companies that "help make the name of Orihuela bigger so that it is known in all corners of the world". HOORAY FOR CAMELOT

Panto season has come and gone….boo hoo! But the cast and crew of the Rojales Pantomime Group had a fantastic time performing their latest pantomime with a difference, Camelot The Panto, at Escuela De Musica y Cultura in Los Montesinos in January 2019. A tale was told of love so true and deeds so bold with a very happy ending seeing Prince Arthur finally winning the hand of the beautiful Guinevere, and even the court jester Laughalot found his true love. Evil was tamed and good prevailed with Morgan Le Fey and her Evil Sisters all succumbing to goodness finally renouncing their magical powers. Songs were sung and lots of dances were perfectly danced

and nurse Connie Clatterbottom and dancing Teddy made it safely through the night in the Haunted Hotel in the Shrieking Bog where the ghost was always BEHIND THEM…. Oh yes it was. Merlin with the help of magic became younger but Valerin the Vicious, and his mum, were unsuccessful in winning the hand of the fair Guinevere. “A pantomime with a difference, Camelot, had it all, slick smooth and professional with lots of laughs. Costumes and props were very good. Well done to the cast and crew for all their hard work, we really enjoyed the matinee performance,” Susan Phillips. That was just one of the many reviews received from the

fantastic audience who all participated to make this pantomime a resounding success. Organisers said, “Thank you one and all and we hope to see you all next year at PANTO TIME.” The Rojales Pantomime Group enjoy various social events throughout the year and if you are interested in joining this merry band of thespians to either act or just help out you can catch up on all the events at www.rojalespantomime.com or email rojalespantomime@gmail.com. Proceeds from the performances will be donated to a variety of local charities which. “Thank you again to everyone who bought tickets we couldn’t do it without you.”

Why trying to lose weight could make your health worse

M

easures to tackle obesity have met with little success and some experts are suggesting there may be a better way. They have suggested that the pursuit of weight loss is not only incredibly difficult, it might actually be harmful and counterproductive. So instead of wasting so much time and effort trying to find ways of making everybody thin, perhaps we should just... stop. This is a controversial approach. Let’s face it; being extremely overweight is definitely bad for your health and costs healthcare services billions of pounds. To give up on obesity would be like giving up on smoking prevention back in the 1970s. A weight-inclusive approach to healthcare Health at Every Size (HAES) is a movement that grew out of the beliefs of feminist anti-diet and fat-acceptance campaigns. At its core is the belief that the focus on weight loss is extremely harmful and should be stopped. Now increasing numbers of informed people are adopting some of the principles of the non-diet movements. The HAES movement encourages a weight-inclusive approach to healthcare, trying to maximise behaviours that improve physical wellbeing, without ever focusing on a patient’s weight. It rejects the notion that BMI, fat or body size is an accurate proxy for health. The movement has spawned an approach to food termed “intuitive eating”. This is based on the idea that people should be encouraged to eat whatever they desire, tuning into their natural hunger signals. Strict eating rules are abandoned in favour of understanding what your body is telling you and developing a better relationship with food. Taking the stigma out of being fat It encourages a world that does not stigmatise fat people. Stigma, it claims, is the greatest barrier to fat people being healthy. As a result, sizeacceptance movements have been some of the most vocal critics of the “obesity epidemic” narrative. This puts them in conflict with many of the world’s large public health bodies. But given the failure of most public health interventions to tackle obesity, perhaps a weight-inclusive approach might benefit this field, shifting the focus towards improving health, which is eminently possible, rather than reducing size, which is very difficult. The downside of restrictive diets Studies have shown that restrictive weight-loss dieting is associated with bingeeating disorder, bulimia, future

weight gain, negative body image, low self‑esteem and depression. Part of the problem is the underlying assumption that we are all meant to be one size. The weight-inclusive movement asserts that categorising a certain range of BMIs as “normal”, is likely to create stigma. And stigma is known to cause many health inequalities, including those frequently associated with obesity and assumed to be caused by fat. Studies have shown that the degree to which people are dissatisfied with their weight is related to their risk of developing type 2 diabetes, independent of their BMI. This raises the possibility that the stress caused by telling people they should be thinner than they are is one of the things making them sick. Most diets don't help people lose weight Even for the most well-supported scientific studies, large amounts of weight loss seem hard to attain. Participants in the US Diabetes Prevention Programme (DPP), a fouryear experiment to study the effects of lifestyle interventions on the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, received intensive personalised training in behavioural management strategies, physical activity and advice on dietary modification. Participants achieved an average weight loss of 7kg in the first year, but in long-term follow‑ups, most of this weight had been regained. Focusing on wellness, not size Both failed when it came to longterm weight loss, but they showed improvements to participants’ health. DPP focused on diabetes, pitching lifestyle against a well-known drug therapy, and proved that the lifestyle interventions were far superior. Exercise particularly seemed to have a significant effect, even if initial weight loss was not sustained at all. The Look AHEAD study was stopped early because it failed to show enough impact on cardiovascular risk, but participants showed improvements in blood pressure, sleep apnoea, visceral fat, depression, kidney problems, physical mobility, the need for diabetes medicines, life quality, knee pain, sexual function and inflammation. When smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, low fruit and vegetable intake and a lack of exercise are studied, it is no surprise that people doing all those things have high rates of mortality. Combine that with being fat, and the picture looks bad indeed. Being fat and fit Anyone over weight who eats badly, drinks too much, smokes and rarely gets off the couch is far more likely to die than a

thin person doing exactly the same. But research has shown that as these behaviours change, the difference between fat and thin people seems to diminish. For non-smoking, regular exercisers who only drink moderately and eat lots of vegetables, there is no difference in mortality rates between thin and fat groups. Public health organisations exist to help us be healthy, not to become thin. Anyone who researches, campaigns, writes or works on obesity, food and health should ask themselves this: are we worried about people’s health, or about their silhouettes? Intuitive eating Understanding our own bodies is fundamental to the intuitive eating method. Intuitive eating was developed in the 1990s by US dieticians Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch and requires becoming reacquainted with the satiety and hunger cues our body naturally gives us (via mood, sleep and energy levels), currently lost to the din of diets. So you eat what you want, when you want? Not quite. You know if you eat doughnuts all day, you’re not going to feel great. But the lack of restriction has resulted in intuitive eaters eating better, with greater freedom and headspace around food. Intuitive eating is pro-health choice. It’s about taking what we know about nutrition, but teaching people to process that in a way that is not all-ornothing. Take those messages about health, but don’t apply them in such a rigid way. Eat fruit and vegetables, and what we know is a good foundation for a healthy diet, but don’t obsess about every calorie. So there’s no diet, no rules. This process of listening to hunger levels, being mindful, thinking about how food makes you feel (not how you look) is called attunement. So, throw away your Fitbit, delete your apps and listen to your inner fuel gauge (‘0 = hangry’, ‘5 = we cool’, ‘10 = stuffed’). If we learn to read this gauge, and address our emotions around food with a sense of self-compassion, experts believe that we’ll take away the angst and self-flagellation that comes with impossible food fads. This approach seems sensible: listen to your body, don’t get caught up in problematic diets. The problem, she acknowledges, is overcoming a lifetime of toxic messaging from diet culture through everything from the media to our mothers. And although, thanks to the body positivity movement, ‘diet’ has become a dirty word, it hasn’t actually gone anywhere. Instead, according to the anti-diet brigade, it’s undergone a major

rebrand – evolving from skinny to strong and diet to wellness. In September 2018, even Weight Watchers rebranded as WW with a focus on… yep, wellness. It’s this transformation that the antidiet movement is raging against, lamenting that wellness is still the same damaging food obsession. ‘“It’s for my health” is a new way of legitimising semi-starvation. In the same period that “clean eating” and wellness culture were at their peak in the UK (20102016), hospital admissions from eating disorders doubled. According to experts ‘Wellness culture is just diet culture, it’s a shape-shifter and suddenly it’s about selfimprovement and confidence. Like #strongnotskinny. On the surface it sounds empowering but what is under the surface? In order to feel good about yourself you need to buy this product or look a certain way. How to just eat it 1. The first rule is:

there are no rules. Avoid anything rigid or overly prescriptive. 2. Reconnect with your body: practise mindful eating, keep a journal to note how different foods have made you feel — how is your mood? Energy levels? Sleep? 3. There’s no such thing as a bad food: think about the overall picture of what you’re eating and don’t get hung up on details or individual nutrients. Take food off pedestals. 4. Be careful who you follow on social media: avoid those who provoke self-doubt or unworthiness. 5. Remember the joy of food: family, friends and pleasure

Dave via email asks: Hi Aunty, I read your article every week and it is probably the first item I turn to. However I wonder if you can help me. I use an external drive to save all my personal stuff on but if it falls into the wrong hands all the details can be accessed easily. Is there a way of having the external drive password protected? Thank you in anticipation. Aunty Says: Hello Dave and thanks. There are two ways of doing this Dave. Some external USB hard drives come with password protection software preinstalled which you will see when you browse the drive. The other option is using encryption via a third party app. There is a built in app with Windows 10 called Bitlocker, but I have never been able to get it to work properly. One bit of free software that consistently gets great reviews is veracrypt.fr so maybe do some Google research. It is very powerful and secure so whatever you do; do not forget your password as there is no way of cracking or hacking it. Elaine from Quesada asks: Dear Aunty. With reference to a recent email in your column about OCR. I have an HP Laptop and an HP

CostaBlancaPeople 29th Jan - 4th February 2019

Envy 4520 printer. I can scan documents to my laptop no problem and my printer gives me the option to scan to OCR. When I tried to scan to OCR the printer says I didn’t have the software. I downloaded the software. The printer says it is not configured to my computer. I have

also down loaded a program which was for OCR but it still does not work. My old cannon printer had print to OCR and it worked perfectly, do I need a computer engineer? Sorry to go on. Aunty Says: Hi Elaine. I’m a little confused about this Elaine as it appears HP have stopped bundling their OCR software with their home range of printers but there doesn’t seem to be any option of

purchasing it. I will investigate further but in the meantime maybe try http://www.ocrtoword.com as it has worked for me and still seems to get good reviews. Linda via email asks: Dear Aunty, I recently bought a reconditioned Asus Windows 10 laptop which I bought just for streaming TV and downloading films. The problem I am having is that I have nearly filled up my C: drive which is 500GB. Is it cheap to upgrade the drive to a 2TB one? Aunty Says: Hi Linda. It won’t be cheap changing your hard disk as in addition to the cost of the new disk, Windows and all your app/data will need to be setup, probably not much change from €130. You may find using a USB external hard disk a lot easier and when you’ve filled that one up you can simply buy another. That’s all for this week, any questions you can email me at auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com and I’ll see you all next week.

Are Dash Cams Legal in Spain? A frequently reoccurring question searched for is "are dash cams legal in Spain?" Although there are data protection issues, when referring to traffic law the simple answer is yes. One point that must be considered is that under data protection legislation you can run into problems if you share the footage on social media showing faces or number plates without permission, for example. That said, not only are dash cams legal in Spain, they can also be extremely useful, especially in providing evidence in the event of an incident, or worse, and can be

used by the authorities to help prosecute offenders, such as was the case when a lorry driver embarked on an extremely dangerous overtaking move, the footage was used to track down and prosecute the driver. We must take notice of is that the installation of the dash cam must not interfere with our primary field of vision. The optimum position will depend on the style of camera and vehicle, but if the camera can be hidden behind the rear view mirror, then it will not impede your view of the road ahead, and will not create an additional distraction.

Like all devices, such as GPS, mobile phones, they must also be secured and you must not touch them whilst you are driving. In terms of them being useful, dash cams have been in use in many countries for many years, serving not only as a means of providing evidence in the event of an incident, but also protecting vehicle owners against false claims. Russia is one of the countries where dash cams have been in use for many years and in America, a move to make them mandatory gained support in recent years, on account of the value they provide.

What is the Clearance Light? Clearance lights, sometimes (somewhat incorrectly) known as height lights, are affixed to certain vehicles and, where applicable, have mandatory requirements. The lights are designed to highlight the width and height of a vehicle, and can assist in speed estimation, distance and the overall dimension of the vehicle. When installed, they must be illuminated under the same conditions as the main vehicle lights, from dusk until dawn and during reduced visibility, but what vehicles have to have them? The clearance lights consist of two white lights on the front and two red

lights on the back of the vehicle. These lights are installed in the upper and outer part of the vehicle, and must be installed on all vehicles over 2.10 metres wide, and are also optional for vehicles with a width greater than 1.80 metres. They are prohibited on vehicles narrower than this. From the explanation, we see an almost contradiction, as although the clearance lights are often known as height lights, and are positioned at the highest points, it is the width of the vehicle which determines their requirement. According to the General

Fall in new car market wake up call to policy makers The UK new car market declined by 6.8% in 2018, with annual registrations falling for a second year to 2,367,147 units, according to figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Private, fleet and business registrations all fell in 2018, with the biggest losses felt in the fleet sector (down -7.3%), while private motorists and smaller business operators registered -6.4% and -5.6% fewer new cars respectively. The biggest volume decline was seen in the diesel sector, down -29.6% in 2018, with the volume loss equivalent to some 180% of the overall market’s decline. Anti-diesel rhetoric and negative fiscal measures took their toll, with December marking the 21st consecutive month of decline for the fuel type – despite new emissions tests showing diesels deliver in the real world. Growth in registrations of petrol (+8.7%) and alternatively fuelled vehicles (+20.9%) replaced some of the loss but not enough to offset the full shortfall as many diesel owners adopt a ‘wait and see’ approach, keeping hold of their older, more polluting vehicles for longer. The figures come as SMMT publishes data showing the UK new car fleet average CO2 rose for a second successive year, by 2.9% to 124.5g/km. This is despite huge investment by manufacturers to deliver ever more efficient cars, with the average new or updated model emitting -8.3% less CO2 than that it replaced. While part of this

fleet average CO2 increase was due to segment shift and the introduction of the new, more onerous WLTP test which produces higher figures, the move away from diesels is having a significant impact. Diesels are, on average, 15-20% more efficient than petrol equivalents and so have a substantial role to play in addressing climate change. The hard won gains made by the sector since CO2 records began in 1997 (when the new car fleet average was 189.8g/km) are being undermined by the shift away from diesel and disappointing growth in alternatively fuelled vehicles. This only underscores the challenge both industry and government face in meeting ambitious climate change targets. Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said, “A second year of substantial decline is a major concern, as falling consumer confidence, confusing fiscal and policy messages and shortages due to regulatory changes have combined to create a highly turbulent market. The industry is facing ever-tougher environmental targets against a backdrop of political and economic uncertainty that is weakening demand so these figures should act as a wake-up call for policy makers. Supportive, not punitive measures are needed to grow sales, because replacing older cars with new technologies, whether diesel, petrol, hybrid or plug-in, is good for the environment, the consumer, the industry and the exchequer.”

Specifications, vehicles of categories M, N and O of more than 2.10 metres in width must be equipped with: -Two approved clearance lights, in white, visible to the front. -Two approved clearance lights, in red, visible from behind. There are other optical signalling devices that indicate the presence of the vehicle, such as the retro-reflectors and the contour marking signal on vehicles (sign V-23). However, although they also indicate the presence of the vehicle, the clearance lights serve as a complement to the position lights of the vehicle.

Get Sacked in the morning seconds into the second half. Wally Downes, one of the original Crazy Gang, watched his Wimbledon side stay strong has the Hammers got it back to 3-2 before sticking the final boot in and winning 4-2. West Ham were, frankly, embarrassing. For while, Wolves looked like they were going to be the Premier League club with FA Cup egg all over their face. They trailed Shrewsbury 2-0 before showing enough class and industry to get themselves a replay back at Molineux. Fair play to whoever wrote the notes for that Shrewsbury corner though, they worked. Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino claimed before his side’s FA Cup clash with Crystal Palace that the new stadium had ‘cost Spurs a trophy’. Central defender Thomas Vertonghen then said that the current Spurs team ‘deserves so many trophies’. Well,

■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

This weekend the Premier League had a few days off as the FA Cup fourth round stepped up to the plate. And, of course, where there is the potential for big clubs to look somewhat foolish there is the potential for me to uncover some funny football news. We got underway on Friday night in North London as Arsenal welcomed Manchester United to the Emirates. Now, it wasn’t that long ago that this game had some big characters taking part. If it kicked off it really kicked off. Go back to the 80s and there was that 21 man brawl that cost both teams points. Fast forward to the 90s and early 00s and you’ll always remember Martin Keown’s face contorting like an angry monkey whilst shouting abuse at Ruud van Nistelrooy. And, of course, there was always Roy Keane versus Patrick Vieira. Somehow, Marcus Rashford squaring up to Granit Xhaka just doesn’t have the same feel to it. Ashley Young gobbing off to Aaron Ramsey doesn’t feel that ‘hard’. None of that really mattered though, as United’s Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revival continued at pace with the Norwegian miracle worker making it eight wins from eight games. It turns out all you needed to do to make Alexis Sanchez look good again was pick him to play against that Arsenal defence he grew so tired of bailing out when he wore the colours of the Gunners. Finally, Sanchez put in an-almostdecent performance for United and even opened the scoring following the kind of assist from Lukaku that Arsenal fans used to see once in a while from Mesut Ozil. I kind of have to give a little bit of credit to Arsenal’s defender Sokratis. He did his best to stay on the pitch despite being clearly injured and he bore the weight of a man knowing that if he had to allow Mustafi on to the field of the play then the game was up.

Nick Pope

surely he gets the job full time if he wants it? And, without a doubt, those twinkling eyes say he wants it. When I saw the score at the Etihad I assumed that Sean Dyche had recalled Joe Hart to Burnley’s starting eleven to give him a little cup runout. But now, it was poor Nick Pope put in the firing line against Manchester City as Peppy G’s men strolled to a 5-0 win. City now have a 28-0 aggregate score against Dyche’s men over the last six matches and have won their last eight fixtures in a row. Is Pep a happy Catalan, though? Not at all. He wants City to be ‘smarter’ in their transfer dealings having seen Barcelona trump them in the battle for Ajax’s Frenkie de Jong. Pep feels the club need to get things done quicker and quicker often means throwing down a silly amount of money that cannot be refused. You know, like City normally do. Are we allowed to go all in on Marco Silva yet? This is a coach who somehow managed to get himself the reputation of being one of the best up-andcoming men in European football without actually doing anything. One failed attempt to keep Hull in the Premier League, a short and

Any Premier League team that has to whinge about a goal going against them in a cup tie against a team from a level below needs pointing at and laughing at in my opinion. Yes, Millwall’s equaliser was handball. But that doesn’t automatically mean you have to go into a sulk and let them score an injurytime winner, does it? If you need VAR to beat a team struggling in the Championship then you need to have a long hard look at yourself. The best bit from the New Den? Millwall manager Neil Harris screaming up at the big screen operatives to stop showing the equaliser to the crowd in case the referee decided to admit he got it wrong and disallow the goal. Don’t cry for too long, West Ham fans. It’s OK because Marko Arnautovic has successfully negotiated that new contract and is staying. That makes an embarrassing defeat to League One strugglers AFC Wimbledon hurt less, doesn’t it? No? You surprise me. How about the fact you’re also going to spend £43m on another striker? Because, after all, it’s your attack that is the problem in games like this, eh? Manuel Pellegrini was so furious at halftime seeing his side 2-0 down that he made all three substitutions at once. Sokratis couldn’t continue and ten minutes later United led 2-0. Sokratis was right. If Solskjaer can make Sanchez good again and convert Romelu Lukaku into a modern-day Stanley Matthews then

unsuccessful stay at Watford and then a controversial move to Everton does not make this guy the next Guardiola or Klopp, it turns out. Especially when Everton are dumped out of the FA Cup at Millwall.

nearly 800 days before Kyle WalkerPeters randomly handled in the box. And as for Kieran Trippier’s penalty, you just know they need Harry Kane back in time for Dortmund. Spurs have now crashed out of both cup competitions in the space of a week but don’t forget, this team deserves trophies. According to Watford’s manager Javi Gracia, choosing between getting to the FA Cup final and giving Watford’s fans a day out they will never forget or finishing 7th in the Premier League is like ‘choosing your favourite parent’. Javi, that must mean that 7th place is the father who spends little time at home, didn’t provide any real memories but always made sure there was plenty of pocket money. Either way, Watford beat Newcastle 2-0 meaning Gracia still has that choice to make.

Mauricio Pochettino

chaps, it’s not as if you aren’t getting the chances, is it? All you had to do was not be rubbish against Chelsea midweek and you’d have another pop at cup glory. All the entitlement chat before the game made me hopeful that Crystal Palace might cause a bit of an upset and I wasn’t disappointed. Crystal Palace saw Spurs off 2-0 including a goal from Connor Wickham, not something I type too frequently. Wickham kneed in his first goal in

Brighton also get to make a few choices after they contrived to get a 00 draw against WBA; a result neither team was massively keen on. Chelsea youngster Callum HudsonOdoi is really keen to avoid being sent to Vitesse Arnhem on loan and much prefers the option of moving to Bayern Munich permanently for £45m. He is so keen on the idea he's actually filed a transfer request. Chelsea did pick him and he did score, but I guess he isn't too keen on training with Gonzalo Higuain. The Argentine made his Chelsea debut in the drab victory over Sheffield Wednesday at Stamford Bridge. Let's not judge him on that though, eh? He's only been in the country five minutes and he's made it to more finals than Tottenham in the last decade or so. Doncaster Rovers beat Oldham to reach the 5th round for the first time in 63 years. Oldham got done by a dodgy penalty and interim manager Peter Wild then claimed he ‘knew nothing’ about the rumours of Paul Scholes taking over. Pete, you just have to follow Twitter mate. It’s quite easy to stay abreast of the latest rumours. Fratton Park was bouncing just like the days Portsmouth financially doped their way to FA Cup glory a decade ago. They managed a 1-1 draw against Championship side QPR. Finally, Swansea made it to the last 16 for the first time since the mid-60s. And, having been to Swansea in the last five years I can confirm that the locals probably feel like that was yesterday just by looking around.

RODS & REELS

The 3rd round of the Abbey Angling Cup was fished at the El Bosquet Complex Section B on the 22nd January. There was frost on the vegetation when we arrived first thing, with temperatures down to minus 2, and for the rest of the day it stayed overcast and very cold. Dave Hutchinson continues with his winning run to take the top spot once again with 17.560kgs, coming in second place with a big drop in weight to 8.840kgs was Neil McBirnie and I managed to take the third spot with 8.200kgs

Our 4th round of the Winter Championship was also fished at the El Bosquet Complex Section B on the 23rd January. It was again a cold day but with a blustery wind making presentation very hard on the pole, but it did not stop Steve Budd from taking the top spot with 12.120kgs (Well done), Neil McBirnie was in second place with 11.200kgs and coming in third with 8.460kgs was Bill Reade

Onto Vistabella for our next event which proved to be a tough test as the winds got up and caused difficult 'society golf' conditions! No more so than for Ricardo Nash who unfortunately propped up the field with 16pts .....better luck next time at Villamartin. The 2's pot was a rollover from La Finca and was won this time by 3 players, Warren Harris, Barry Mitchell and SMGS Captain Big Tony Smale each taking home 61 euros. The nearest the pins were sponsored by The Society this event which saw winners Russell Bailey, John Morrison, Tony Smale, Phil De Lacy and Barry

Mitchell each 'hitting the mark'....well done Chaps. We had 8 guests which is great and in 3rd place with 32pts off handicap 9 was John Morrison, 2nd saw Michael Leonard with 33 off 11 and in 1st place with an astonishing performance playing off plus 4 was visiting 'Pro' James Freeman scoring 38pts and we look forward to James joining us again anytime soon. Onto our Silver category in 3rd place scoring 33 pts off handicap 15 was a subdued Barry Mitchell, 2nd Mike Greatorex on countback with the same 33 off 14 but with the best score of the whole event and also winning the best Lady player by a country mile was our

very own Liz Sully amassing a huge 41 pts off a handicap of 15 which is obviously going to be closely looked at by the handicap committee but even so a tremendous performance...well done Liz. In Gold Kevin Bird came 3rd with 32 off 12, Phil De Lacy 2nd with 34 off 11 and winning with a creditable 34 pts off 10 was Gareth Davies. Our next event will be at Villamartin 08.02.19 which is currently full but we are trying to obtain additional tee times so watch this space. Your week in sport ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Ah, that’s the kind of start you want to the biggest cricketing year in English history, isn’t it? England were absolutely humbled by the West Indies in Barbados taking a beating that made me check the calendar to see if we’d been thrown back in time to the 1980s and early 1990s.

not 1993) it is safe to say that 281 was a good score.

boundary often enough to get a score of 202 not out.

exude calm authority even in testing conditions. Is it too late to call Cooky?

It was a curious tactic by England, it has to be said. Having lost the toss it meant they would have to bat last on a pitch likely to turn towards the end of the match. Maybe they were being really, really clever by putting the Windies in a position where they could enforce a follow-on?

Holder was assisted by wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich who got a pretty 116 himself. These boys were batting numbers seven and eight. And there was me thinking it was England who batted deep.

Some of you might be shouting out that Rory Burns got 84 in the second innings. You’d be correct but even that concerns me. A ton for Burns at that point would have nailed him down as an opener for the whole calendar year (a bit like Jennings’ ton and Bairstow’s ton in Sri Lanka seem to have done the same for them) and he failed to get over the line. Mental weakness? Too much pressure? Suddenly realised it was a futile battle anyway and fancied a day off in Barbados?

I need to come back to the subject

Let’s get the facts out there quickly, almost as quickly as England collapsed on Day Two. The Windies beat us by 381 runs. 381 runs! I am not going peak-Freddie Flintoff or Geoffrey Boycott in the perceived disrespect scale, but 381 runs? Are we that bad and are they that good? I don’t really know where to begin with it all, if I am being honest. England picked the names I expected them to pick, including Sam Curran ahead of Stuart Broad rather than Adil Rashid as I’d predicted, but names on a piece of paper don’t win cricket matches. Bowling them out for 281 in the 1st innings was, all told, a good bowling performance by Jimmy and the boys but the old saying goes that you never know what a good score is until both teams have batted. And, with England getting skittled for a mere 77 (yes, I checked again - it is 2019 and

Bring me Mike Atherton, please. The other concern I have is that Moeen Ali already looks like a man who seems to be on a mission to play himself OUT of the Ashes series. Why would you go that, Moeen? All you had to do was bat sensibly for a few hours and then the gaze would be on someone else. But no, Ali is now very much in line for the chop for the 2nd Test. The Windies actually turned that offer down and set about putting on another 415 in their second knock, including a double-ton for skipper Jason Holder. This feat produced incredulity from former England star Andrew Flintoff who could not get his head around the fact that Holder had been able to cart pies to the

of Keaton Jennings. We keep hearing what a ‘top attitude’ he has and how he is ‘great in the dressing room’ but, really? Come on now. All that is a given, surely? How about he becomes great at the wicket? Yes, I know he top-scored in the first innings with, ahem, 14 but we need at least one of the openers to

It is also worth pointing out that England got bowled out in their second go by a batsman who bowls. Roston Chase took eight (EIGHT) England scalps on Day Four. You might be forgiven for thinking he is Murali reincarnated. He isn’t. England played him very, very badly and he bowled very, very well.

Our spinners didn’t. Other than Jimmy Anderson and Ben Stokes, we were toothless with the ball meaning that Stuart Broad has to return, probably at the expense of Sam Curran, or Moeen Ali. Actually, Adil Rashid did diddly as well. Drop them all, drop them all. Tennis must go on even with Andy Murray about to call it a day and it was over to two other male veterans to play out the Australian Open Final in Melbourne. World Number One Novak Djokovic beat Rafa Nadal in straight sets to claim his 15th Grand Slam title. That’s quite a lot when you compare him to the greatest player Great Britain has ever produced. Over in the women’s draw, it was quite nice to see Naomi Osaka follow up her US Open victory that was marred by Serena Williams’ poor loser vibe with victory over Petra Kvitova. Osaka has now won back-to-back Grand Slams and could well be the women’s player to beat over the next decade. Rugby’s Six Nations gets underway this coming weekend with England heading over to Ireland hoping to become the first visiting team to win there since 2016. Eddie Jones was his usual charming self whilst looking to put pressure on the Irish, saying ‘the pressure is on them’. Eddie, mate. The pressure will be on you if you fail to deliver the Six Nations title and the World Cup this year.
