Local government takes on Emergency Centre

T

he City of Orihuela will assume the responsibility for the long awaited work to complete the Orihuela Costa Centre for Emergencies, following the rejection of the regional government, Generalitat Valenciana, to deal with the project tenders. The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, announced that he has called a meeting for today, Tuesday 12th March at 10am, in order to approve the delegation of powers to the City of Orihuela for the completion of the works of the Centre. After more than a year without response from the Generalitat Valenciana, "we can carry out the works through the City Council, in the absence of commitment and management by the regional government," he said in a statement. The Local Department of Emergencies already presented the modified version of the project to the general director of Emergencies, José María Ángel Batalla, back in December 2017 and "it has not been until now when we have had a firm

answer on the matter, an answer that arrives very late". Now though, both the Mayor and the council insist that "the Generalitat Valenciana has had more than enough time to have tendered and executed these important works for our city, because it was their responsibility, and now we should be talking about opening the finished facilities, since it was in February 2018 when the regional administration gave its approval to the project presented by the City of Orihuela. The abandoned project has been the cause of much controversy since its scheduled development ten years ago. The Orihuela Costa – the coastal stretch governed by the ciy of Orihuela covering the likes of Playa Flamenca, La Zenia and Cabo Roig, is home to tens of thousands of residents, including many foreigners. The population can multiply fivefold in high season and coupled with an ageing population of expat retirees, the current provision of very basic emergency services has long been deemed inadequate.

Long awaited commitment

BITE SIZE La Bella Lola NEWS: wants a divorce The four people were affected by smoke during a fire in Torrevieja. Neighbours rescued two people from a fire in their kitchen and they and their rescuers were subsequently found to be suffering from smoke inhalation. The property is located in calle Alfredo Kraus and there were difficulties for the fire engines reaching the property due to some confusion over house numbers. The incident happened at around 8.30pm at the property in the Jardín del Mar urbanisation. When the fire engine arrived a man and a woman were outside the house having been rescued by two neighbours. The most seriously affected by smoke was the male owner of the house and he was attended to by the emergency services and taken to Torrevieja hospital. Two emergency calls had been made but initially neither the local police, fire brigade or Guardia Civil could find the property because of problems with the numbering of the house. This is not an unusual situation in the town where some houses have a street number that is different to that given to it privately by the developer. The kitchen was badly damaged by the fire, smoke and heat and the rest of the house had smoke damage.

Twenty detained in drug bust More than twenty people were arrested for the cultivation and distribution of drugs through different Continued on page 5

They are perhaps the most emblematic statues in Torrevieja and millions of visitors have been photographed with them over the years. La Bella Lola sits on her seat looking out to the sea on the Paseo de las Rocas, Juan Aparicio searching for her sailor husband to return. Meanwhile on the promenade of the dique de Levante her sister statue waves her husband off with her handkerchief. The two statues have been part of the scenery for around fifteen years and the name Bella Lola has found itself associated with the wife left behind at port waiting for her husband to return. But now, in the year 2019, she wants a divorce. On the day before international women’s day, the Bella Lola statue could be seen on the dock, not waving her handkerchief, but divorce papers. In a gesture of defiance at this image of a woman waiting forever, someone had placed in her hand a paper that asked for ‘Los papeles del divorcio’. The paper could

be clearly seen bound to her metal handkerchief and must have raised a smile from those meeting the new, liberated Lola on 7th March. Perhaps there is a message here too. In the Spanish online paper ‘Informacion’ it points out that if you look carefully at the statue the evidence of Lola’s vulnerability is evident. The green on her breasts and bottom has been eroded over the years not, they think, by the elements but by groping human hands. It is an interesting observation whatever you make of it. BITE SIZE No bathing here NEWS: Continued from page 3 cannabis outlets in Torrevieja. The Guardia Civil seized a range of products containing marijuana such as chocolate creams, muffins, jelly beans, lollipops and cookies. The cannabis associations that are being investigated have more than 6,000 members and include five establishments and two homes. The criminal organisation is made up of people from eight different nationalities who used the associations through which to distribute their goods. The Guardia Civil had been asked to investigate the increase in cannabis associations in the area following complaints from local residents. Back in February a plantation was discovered that included cannabis plants at different stages of growth. As a result of this, seven people were arrested. Following this discovery more leads were followed that included the publicising of the associations on social media. A British couple were found to be the ring leaders in this network. A total of 21 people have been arrested including 17 men between the ages of 25 and 57 of Spanish, Senegalese, Chadian, Dutch, Swiss, Russian and British nationality. Four women have been arrested between the ages of 28 and 48 of Spanish, Canadian and British nationality.

A sign has gone up on the wall of the dique de Levante. It states in large letters that it is forbidden to anchor and bathe in the dock. The dique de Levante is the promenade that extends from Torrevieja’s main paseo out into the sea, past the ports and harbours. It is a favourite place for people to anchor their boats and bathe in the summer months but, with it, they take their risks. Torrevieja is a very busy seaside resort. It is has three marinas, a commercial salt exporting business and a fishing fleet along with many thousands of visitors and residents who enjoy its beaches and seafront. It comes as a shock to learn that in spite of all this activity, particularly in the summer, there is a very limited level of supervision of what’s going on there. There are only two port police and many jobs are done by Torrevieja’s local police instead. It is largely they who try to prevent boats from anchoring in the dock, especially during the summer season. Officially the port is the responsibility of the Valencian

Government who are believed to be responsible for the sign. In total there are more than 2,700 mooring points in three marinas in Torrevieja. There are recreational boats, sailing boats, yachts, jet skis and amateur fishing boats which frequent this part of the port. Added to this are the many ships which come to Torrevieja for salt and the professional fishing fleet. The post of sea captain, overseeing the activity, has been vacant since 2012. Instead this role has been delegated to Alicante port. It is not surprising that port activity appears to be only loosely monitored and requires a sign as substitute for personnel. People are in fact also prohibited from bathing on the Acequión beach. A prohibition which is completely ignored in this very popular area. It is hard to see how the positioning of a sign, however clearly worded, will make any difference to those accustomed to using these waters to bathe. Suzanne O’Connell

Awards for the hospitality industry It has been announced that Hotel Cano will be given the Tenedor de Oro (Golden fork) 2019 award in Torrevieja. This is a prestigious award presented by the Torrevieja Hospitality Association, AEHTC. Other awards that have been announcedinclude La Placa de Reconocimiento Empresa2019 which was awarded to La Licorería, a company that collaborates with the AEHTC in a variety of activities. El Grupo Thas will be presented with an award for being an innovative company and Copas& Tapas will receive la Bandeja de Plata (the Silver Tray). Bacanal Puerto Torrevieja will be awarded la Cotelera de Plata for their contribution within the pubs, nightclubs and nightlife sector. The awards will be presented at the 44th dinner which will be held on Monday March 25th at Las Columnas Restaurant.

The youth habaneras competition Four hundred young people will take part in the 25th Youth Habaneras competition on 6th April. The competition will take place in the International Auditorium and the six choirs will be judged by professional choristers. Each of the three winners will also receive a trophy. Local choirs will have opportunity to participate in the competition on April 5th in the Casino in Torrevieja from 7pm. The event in the International Auditorium will begin at 5pm. If you would like to watch, the tickets can be purchased from March 25th to April 5that the Habaneras offices in Continued on page 8

Brit tourist killed in Benidorm A Scottish tourist has been killed in ‘fight between holidaymakers’ in Benidorm, according to police reports. The male holiday maker died on Friday (8th March) after an alleged fight with other Brits in the area known as ‘Little England’ in the popular Costa Blanca tourist hotspot of Benidorm. Police launched an immediate and ongoing investigation and an autopsy was set to be held later on the same day

as the tragic incdent. A National Police spokesman in Alicante said: “I can confirm a 33-year-old British man has died on the street in Benidorm. He was from Scotland and was on holiday in the resort.” The spokesman added: “The investigation so far has determined that moments earlier according to eye witness testimony, the man participated in a fight with other people who appear to be other British people who were also holidaying in Benidorm.”

Who is to blame for the temporary closure of Alimentos Solidarios? The next local council elections are taking place in May. Already we are seeing the electoral strategies of different councillors and other interested parties coming into play. José Hurtado, in charge of the budget for the current local government, is currently under fire for the temporary closure of Alimentos Solidarios in Torrevieja. Alimentos Solidarios provides people with limited means with food for their family. The charity prepares meals in their kitchen in Calle San Pascual and needs around €54,000 a year to continue providing its services. Around twenty percent of this is financed through donations from businesses and individuals. They also hold events to raise money and the rest is provided by Torrevieja town hall. The Local Governmenthas been blamed by some opposition parties for the temporary closure of the charity due to lack of funds. In their defence, José Hurtado has pointed out that the charity is not a government department and that government subsidy is

only one of the means by which it continues to function. Its temporary closure might have been prevented with an appeal for public help. The closure of the organisation has given fuel to those who wish to discredit the current government team. There have been a number of verbal attacks including that the government puts looking after animals ahead of that of looking after people. The timing of Alimentos Solidarios subsidy is being called into question. There are allegations that a delay in paying out has caused this temporary closure. However, Councillor Hurtado denies this pointing out that the timing of payment is very similar to that conducted in previous years. So, for example, in 2013 a subsidy was granted in December of €30,701.21 and this was paid on February 10th 2014. The subsidy for 2014 was granted again in December for an amount of €33,243.09 and was paid on March 10th 2015. In 2015 the subsidy was granted in June and paid on June 28th 2016. In 2016 €30,883.32 was granted in

December and paid on March 23rd 2017. Finally, the subsidy for 2017 was granted in December 2017 and the total of €42,896.76 was paid on March 16th 2018. Every year a similar process is followed with local ONGs (charities) applying for a subsidy from the town hall. Each organisation must justify its request and provide the necessary paper work. In 2018 a total of €331,273.41 was allocated to eleven different charities, of which Alimentos Solidarios was one. The final payment is usually made in March, as has happened this year too. Hurtado has explained that the current government is paying more to this particular charity than in previous years. The difficulty with finances, says Hurtado, is not down to the timing of the payment but the financial management of the organisation itself. As the date of the local council elections gets nearer we can expect the accusations between political parties to increase. Suzanne O’Connell

BITE SIZE Guardia Civil found NEWS: not guilty of young man’s death Continued from page 5

April 5th at the Habaneras offices in calle Patricio Pérez, 1. The office is open from 9am until 11am and from 12pm until 2pm. On the day of the competition you can buy the tickets from 4pm at the International Auditorium’s box office.

New Commander in Chief The new Commander in Chief of the Guardia Civil in Alicante Province was received at the town hall on Thursday 7th March. Colonel José Hernández Mosquera is the new head of the armed division of the police force in the province. He met the mayor of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón, and was presented with the traditional salt boat which is symbolic of Torrevieja’s craftsmanship. Following his visit to the town hall the Commander continued on to the Guardia Civil building in the town.

Gabriel Samper football field almost good to go Torrvieja’s Gabriel Samper football fieldwill be given the go ahead to open to the public again. The pitch had been closed during restoration works but now Councillor Victor Ferrández has informed the press that the work is almost completed and will be signed off on Tuesday 12th March. The next stage of the sports field renovation works will take place on the Esteban Rosado field. Suzanne O’Connell

The young man from Torrevieja had been travelling in a stolen car when he was killed by shots from the police officer. The parents of the young man had accused the police officer of manslaughter. The incident happened whilst the officer and his colleague were attempting to arrest a criminal gang believed to be carrying out robberies in the area. The incident happened in 2006 when the accused and another officer were on patrol. They were warned about a car, believed to have been stolen, that carried a group of people involved in robberies in the area. They were also warned that the gang might be armed and that they should take extreme care. The Guardia Civil officers spotted the car in a petrol station near the N-301 and

one of the officers approached it to identify the occupants. However, as he turned away the car was driven towards the defendant who then proceeded to fire at the car. One of the shots hit the vehicle and the driver suffered serious injuries and died shortly afterwards. The Supreme Court confirmed the judgement of the Provincial Court of Murcia that in July 2017 had found the Guardia Civil officer not guilty. The parents of the deceased young man had appealed against the decision which has now been supported by the High Court. The High Court has ordered that the parents of the young man now pay the court costs. Suzanne O’Connell

Strike at old people’s home Cleaners at an old people’s home in Torrevieja are currently on strike due to disagreements over payments in January and February. The strike has been in operation for the past two weeks and now the suspension of some services is beginning to take effect. Laundry belonging to the 200 old people who occupy the facility is beginning to mount up unwashed. The laundry is one of the key services whichthe cleaners are currently refusing to do in the Residencia Pública de la Tercera Edad in Torrevieja, the only public home for the elderly in the town. The cleaning service is managed by the organisation Netalia Servicios Integrales y

Raspeig and they are sub contracted by the Valencian regional government. The Valencian government has stated that the disagreement over salaries and benefit payments is between that of the contracted business and its workers. However, unions representing the workers state that the Valencian Government has continued the arrangement with this cleaning company in spite of their knowledge of disputes between the workers and the administrators. Valencia isn’t the only autonomous community that the cleaning firm operates in. Altogether it has a workforce of more than 700 spread across a number of different regions. The refusal of staff to wash

linen and clothes is having an impact on those working there and the residents. Towels and linen are becoming in short supply. Many of these users are in agreement with the striking members of staff and sympathise with their predicament. However, the unions are disappointed that other workers in the home have not suspended their services. The striking workers consist of 15 women along with some temporary staff and some who are currently on sick leave. They are protesting at the lack of payment of salary for the months of January and February and that payment of the previous year’s benefits, usually paid in February, has also not been honoured. Two marine reserves proposed A study by the University of Alicante commissioned by Torrevieja proposes the creation of two protected areas off the coast. One is north of the Torrevieja coastline and consists of 120 sea hectares and the second to the south of 296 hectares. Designating these areas as a marine reserve would mean that recreational fishing and aqua sports would be prohibited there. Boats would not be allowed to anchor in the zone either. This practice has a negative impact on the sea bed as anchors are dragged across the sea grass. Jet skis would also be banned from use in reserve. The purpose of creating these protected areas of sea is to improve the supply of fish and repopulate the waters. Similar measures were taken on the island of Tabarca in the 1980s with positive

results. The protected area would be marked out with the use of buoys. However, there are concerns about the impact this might have on those who come to the coast for recreational fishing. In the three marinas in Torrevieja there are moored hundred of boats and there are two fishing clubs that go fishing several times a week. The proposal is unlikely to have any impact on the fishing industry itself as the professional boats are not allowed to fish so close to shore. It has been suggested that in order to make up for the loss of recreational fishing opportunities, an artificial reef might be created. This might be located in front of the Levante pier and be combined with the renovation of the International Marina. Suzanne O’Connell

GBP / EUR UPDATE

E

conomic statistics presented a mixed picture in the UK but it seems like the pound may be struggling to avoid the shadow of Brexit. Construction PMI came in at a disappointing 49.5, missing the forecast 50.3, and the pound subsequently moved lower, for an average daily loss of 0.2%. However, later in the week the pound also fell after the services PMI came in at 51.3, a point higher on the month and more than a point above forecast. It’s thought that the long shadow of Brexit is drawing attention from the ecostats. The pound did recover from its losses later in the week. The Lords passed a cross-party amendment to a trade bill, which requires the government to join a customs union with Europe after Britain leaves the EU. On its own the amendment is not binding but it was another indication of parliament's opposition to no-deal and, perhaps, a step further along the path towards what was once referred to as a soft Brexit. The vote seemed to settle some of the nerves over the crunch votes next week on the updated deal, ruling out a nodeal or requesting an extension to Article 50. The pound is likely to be volatile next week in the run up to

the votes as investors seek clarity on the way ahead for Brexit and sterling. Every one of the measures from Euroland beat forecast and none of the PMIs was below the breakeven at 50. Even Italy and France managed to scrape into the growth zone at 50.4 and 50.2 respectively. Euro zone retail sales matched the international trend, rebounding by 1.3% in January. Italy's GDP contracted by 0.1% in the fourth quarter but even that beat the -0.2% forecast. The OECD’s Interim Economic Outlook presented revised projections for GDP growth in the euro, lowering 1% in 2019 and 1.2% in 2020. This is a reduction of 0.8 percentage points compared to the estimate from the OECD in November last year. Laurence Boone, OECD chief economist, said: “Growth in Europe has been particularly disappointing, as trade growth both within the EU and with external partners has stalled.“What worries us is how much it [growth] is slowing in the euro area.” At the end of the week, the euro fell against the pound after the ECB revised their forecasts and indicated that there were unlikely to be any increase in interest rates this year.

Alzheimer’s charity event The 6th walk in aid of AFA (Asociación de Alzhéimer de Familiares y Amigos de Torrevieja) will be held on Sunday 7th April. The walk or run will begin at 10am and Councillor Carmen Morate hopes that as many people as possible will join in. ‘It has been extraordinary how many businesses have given their support to the event. We expect the public will do the same,’ she said at the press conference. The walk is being coordinated by Trudy Páez and one of the main sponsors this year is Torrevieja hospital. Because of this, the title of the event has changed a little. This year it will be known as ‘VI Carrera/Marcha Solidaria AFA Torrevieja Salud’ to acknowledge the support being provided. ‘Throughout the six years of the event we are always looking to make improvements,’ explained the councillor. ‘The majority of the money collected will go this year to the centre itself. Every day those working there support the rehabilitation and stimulation of those suffering from Alzheimers.’ In spite of some changes, many aspects of the walk/ run will be the same as in previous years. It is a 4km route for those who wish to walk or, alternatively, you can complete a four or eight km run. The start

and finish line is outside the Casino in Torrevieja and it costs 10 euros to take part. You can register at the association headquarters in la Avenida de la Estación 1, in the charity shop in calle Maestro Francisco Vallejos or on their web page: http://www.asuspuestos.com/eve nto/vi-carreramarcha-solidariaafa-torrevieja Every participant will receive a bag of goodies including a t-shirt, a bum bag, a hat, nuts and a ticket that entitles you to a drink and something to eat after the event. This year there will also be a new wardrobe service which previous years’ participants have asked for. AFA would like to thank all

those who are collaborating in this event and those who are contributing to a raffle linked to the numbers each participant is given. There will be a number of prizes including restaurant meals, Spa and physiotherapy vouchers. Every winner will receive a trophy and a ham. You can collect your participants’ number and bib from 6th April in the Decathlon sports shop in Zenia Boulevard. Decathlon are also sponsoring the event. You can also collect your number on the day. Spain introduces new rental rules A new government decree regulating rentals in Spain went into effect on Wednesday, five days after being approved by the Cabinet. The measures introduced by the government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, of the Socialist Party (PSOE), seek to improve protection for tenants at a time when affordable housing is becoming increasingly difficult to find.

extended from one to three years. After the mandatory renewal period, landlords must give four months’ notice to end the contract and tenants must give two. While earlier contracts could establish their own provisions for annual reviews, the new decree prevents annual rent hikes of more than the consumer price index (CPI) within the contract period.

Price benchmark system

The decree extends the duration of the rental contract from three to five years (or seven if the landlord is a company), and prevents annual rent hikes of more than the consumer price index (CPI) within that period. The new rules do not put a cap on how much monthly rent a landlord can ask for, as the anti-austerity party Podemos had lobbied for. Like all government decrees, this one will have to be ratified by Congress within a month. But because of the snap election called for 28th April, parliament has been dissolved and this task will fall to a permanent congressional committee. The PSOE executive has already secured pledges of support from left-wing group Podemos and the Catalan nationalist party PdeCAT. The main changes will only apply to new lease agreements signed on 6th March and later.

Contracts extended The minimum length of a contract has been extended from three to five years (or seven if the landlord is a business). To provide greater stability for tenants, the period of tacit renewal has been

The decree introduces a state benchmark index for rental prices that will be used to follow changes in the market and help determine whether an asking price is adjusted to market realities. This index will provide the average price in any given part of Spain, and undergo annual reviews. The government has given itself eight months to produce the first figures. Limit on property costs. In addition to a one-month deposit, property owners can only ask a tenant for additional guarantees equivalent to two months of rent. If the landlord is a legal entity, it must cover any real estate agency expenses.

More security for tenants The decree equally recognizes contracts registered with the Property Registry and those that have not been registered. In other words, if someone buys a property that is already rented out, they must respect the tenant’s lease agreement.

Evictions All eviction processes will go through the social services first to determine whether a tenant is in a vulnerable situation. If so, the eviction process will be pushed back one month (three if the owner is a business) to help the tenant find a new place to stay. Judges must also communicate the exact date and time that the eviction will take place.

Holiday rentals The decree says that a building’s apartment owners may collectively agree to place limits on the use of units for the purposes of tourist accommodation.

Villajoyosa

Located at the northern end of the Costa Blanca in the Alicante province, Villajoyosa (La Villa Joiosa) is the capital of the Marina Baixa district. A delightful and historic town, it stretches the length of a lovely wide, sandy beach, with pretty coloured fishing houses running along the seafront and is encompassed with a backdrop of mountains. Situated around 26 kilometres from the city of Alicante and Alicante International airport, Villajoyosa is a well-situated destination, ideal for exploring the rest of the Costa Blanca coastline. History Villajoyosa has a rich cultural heritage. Its history as a town dates back to the 6th century and it has been settled by the Greeks, Phoenicians, the Romans and of course the Moors, when it actually fell into some decline, which is unusual for a Moorish occupied town. The town as it is known today was founded in 1293 by an Admiral who served in the Kingdom of Aragon’s navy. It’s name Villajoyosa, literally means Joyful town. Throughout the centuries Villajoyosa has been an important trade point along this coastline; trading in olive oil, cereals and wine, and shipbuilding, amongst others. But probably what it is most famous for is chocolate. During the 19th century the town started to develop a chocolate-making industry. Because of its trade connections, it started importing cocoa from Ecuador and Venezuela and the industry grew and grew. The chocolate brand, ‘Valor’, which can be found in most shops and supermarkets throughout Spain comes from Villajoyosa. Around town A seafront backed by rows of colourful fishing cottages, and old walled town centre, with a distinctive gothic feel, roman bridges and a traditional Spanish working town feel. Villajoyosa is really a ‘joyful’ place to visit.

There are plenty of amenities and facilities for holiday-makers: shops, bars and restaurants in abundance, a lively fish market and bustling local market, where you can pick up fresh local produce, home-made local souvenirs and crafts and other holiday items. Villajoyosa Beach Villajoyosa is set at the mouth of a river, which sweeps into the Mediterranean Sea. Three kilometres of wide, golden, sandy beaches form part of the local coastline. The local beaches are popular with water sports enthusiasts and there are good facilities on the beach.

Tabarca island Places to visit Villajoyosa is well placed to explore the stretch of coastline known as the Costa Blanca in the Valencia region. Close by are the resorts of Benidorm, Altea, Denia and of course the city of Alicante. You could also take trip by boat to the lovely Island of Tabarca. Visit the Caves of Canelobre, a marvel of mother nature; or head to Elche to see the largest Palm Forest in Europe, where you can enjoy a stroll through the subtropical environment.

Is she an escort?

Will worries

I’ve been seeing a woman who ticks all the boxes. She’s 15 years younger, and real dolly bird - a blonde bombshell type like Marilyn Monroe. We’ve been dating on and off for a while now, however she won’t commit to me. I like showing her off to my mates and I think I did well getting her, but my mates say she’s only with me because I buy everything for her - one even told me that she advertises as an escort online. When I tackle her about it, she says she is seeing other blokes but it’s just to pay the bills and she doesn’t sleep with them, but one of my mates says he slept with her.

My father remarried after my mum died, and is now in his 70s. I have had a fairly good relationship with my step mother. However, my father told me he’d changed his will to leave everything to his wife, but on the understanding that when she dies, the percentage of the money that Dad brought to the marriage would come to me. I guess I couldn’t seen anything wrong with that, however, my two horrid step brothers seem to be under the impression that they will get all the money, and that their mother has promised them this will be the case.

If you’ve heard rumours that she is seeing other guys, one of them your friend, then why would you want to hang onto her? Do you really believe she is not sleeping with these other men? Have you looked online for her website, as your friends have indicated? If this is true, don’t let yourself be made a fool of.

Have you spoken to your father about this? If your father wants you to inherit his money, then he needs to make sure his Solicitor knows about it. Was this arrangement just a casual agreement between your father and his second wife? Is he trusting her to give you your share when he dies, or has something been formally agreed and a stipulation of the Will? If not, it needs to be done. A verbal agreement could be unsafe, and he should see his solicitor.

€435,000 that will do nicely thank you The Local Government in Torrevieja is set to receive a total of €435,449 from the Valencian government. The money is not linked to any particular programme and the town hall does not have to present a project to claim it. The amount has been calculated according to the number of people living in the town. The mayor, José Manuel Dolón, claims that this source of funding has been missing previously due to the lack of collaboration of the provincial government in Alicante with the Valencian government. There are four layers of government in Spain that can make arriving at any decision difficult to do. The first layer is the national government, which until recently, was led by the PP or conservative party. Below this are the regional governments such as that of Valencia which are given regional powers and rights. In the

Valencian community this has been a left-leaning council following the last local elections. Below this is the provincial government which, in the case of Alicante, has been a right-leaning force led by the PP. Finally, Torrevieja has been led by a socialist four-party coalition. You can see how this unusual sandwich of different political leanings has made getting anything done very difficult in the past four years. The situation has been made even more difficult by the fact that the town hall in Torrevieja has itself been split having barely a majority to carry out any actions. One example of the impact of the impasse created by these different councils is the work only now being done on Margalla Promenade. The works had been commissioned in 2011 and now, in 2019, are at last taking place. Suzanne O’Connell

Brit stabs Spanish wife on Costa del Sol

stabbed his 58-year-old wife after attempting to kick her son, 15, out of the house. The events happened at around 11:45pm in what is the second case of gender violence on the Costa del Sol this year. Estepona City Council has now ordered three days of mourning for the murdered woman, starting with a minute’s silence. The Mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano said: “Sexist violence cannot and will not have a place in our society. We must work together and we must continue fighting to end this scourge.”

A British man has stabbed his Spanish wife to death in Estepona on the Costa Del Sol, before trying to kill himself. The 55-year-old was taken into in police custody at a medical centre where he was treated for self-inflicted wounds on his wrists. The man is reported to have

Prescriptions can now be purchased from any pharmacy in Spain and are no longer just limited to the region in which the patient lives, explains health minister María Luisa Carcedo. This system had already gone live in the Greater Madrid region, but has now been extended to the other 16 plus the Spanish-owned city-provinces of Ceuta and Melilla on the northern Moroccan coast. Additionally, doctors anywhere in the country can access a patient’s medical history, meaning national travel no longer means being ‘cut off’ in terms of healthcare. This will offer peace of mind to those on regular and vital medication, when people which to travel round the country. Already, the new-style red SIP cards allow for treatment anywhere in the country, rather than solely in the patient’s own region, but it is not compulsory to replace existing cards as earlier SIP or public healthcare cards unless and until these become lost or damaged, or suffer wear and tear that does not allow them to be ‘swiped’. Catalunya had followed Madrid in

‘nationalising’ prescription collection and medical history access – both being ‘output’ regions for a high number of national tourists, many of whom head for Spain’s coastal areas in summer.

Nationwide healthcare Each patient registered on the national system, and who is in possession of a SIP card with their name and medical ID, will be assigned a code that appears on their records and links up to regional computer networks, which are now centralised. This is particularly crucial if someone travels nationally and becomes indisposed, unable to answer questions about previous illnesses, medication intolerances or allergies. Also, Sra Carcedo has announced a further 780 vacancies for medical professionals to be trained – 450 for doctors and the rest for nurses – will be opened up next year. Some regions, including Navarra, Castilla y León, Galicia and Andalucía have called for even more resources, and are pushing for a mass recruitment drive of resident junior doctors.

Five things not to do when selling your home

Rebecca Serwotka

Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward – 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today! Featured on Best Buy Spain – Property TV – Sky Channel 189.

It’s easy to get carried away when showing your home to a potential purchaser, but I’ve seen on many occasions where the homeowner is so eager to show the buyer all of the features and upgrades, that they forget what they’re actually saying and doing to the buyer. Here are 5 things to avoid when showing your home: 1. One subject that would be avoidable is talking about the price of the home. Making a comment like, “we know we’re on the high side, but we’re not in any hurry to sell,” will most certainly turn a potential buyer off. 2. Features and upgrades are not all welcomed in the same way, so don’t be eager to talk about them as soon as your buyer walks through your door. What you believe to be an upgrade, may not be classed as one at all in your buyer’s eyes! 3. Nosey neighbours! If you don’t know who your nosey neighbour is, then you must be it! I like to think of this as being a positive, but again, it can turn

buyers off, especially if they think someone could be watching their every move. So don’t feel it necessary to point out where the “curious” neighbours reside! 4. Another avoidable subject is location. Not every home is in a highly desirable area, so don’t highlight this fact. Not every buyer will like your location. Just because you like being close to the shops, or bars and restaurants, doesn’t mean everyone else will. 5. Go easy on the buyer. Don’t overpower them. Let them have a leisurely look around, instead of creating a whirlwind as you whisk them through room after room. You don’t want your buyer running away from your home faster than the running of the bulls in Pamplona! Ideally is to let your Real Estate Agent do the showing for you! Selling? Enjoy the journey! Big Little Lies Killing Eve Eve (Sandra Oh) is a bored low-level MI5 security employee, working a simple desk-job that don't come close to fulfilling her secret desire of being a spy. Meanwhile, Villanelle (Jodie Comer) is a dangerous, capricious and dangerous assassin who enjoys a life of luxury afforded by her violent job. When Eve connects a string of murders all across Europe to Villanelle, she's hired to track the killer. The two end up obsessed with each other and enter into an epic and dangerous game of cat and mouse.

Based on the same-titled best-seller by Liane Moriarty, "Big Little Lies" weaves a darkly comedic tale of murder and mischief in the tranquil beachfront town of Monterey, Calif. Amidst doting moms, successful husbands, beautiful children, and stunning homes exists a community fueled by rumors and divided into haves and have-nots, exposing fractured relationships between husbands and wives, parents and children, and friends and neighbors. Told through the eyes of three mothers -- Madeline, Celeste and Jane -- the series' narrative explores society's myths regarding perfection and its romanticization of marriage, sex, parenting and friendship. Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman and Shailene Woodley star as the three prominent "mothers of Monterey."

Feminism is the word in Spain’s electoral campaign

Women’s rights have taken centre stage in election campaigns for Spain’s left- and right-wing parties as International Women’s Day approaches even as ultra-conservative groups hit back at what they dub “radical feminism.” Unions, feminist associations and left-wing parties have called for a work stoppage for two hours on 8th March, hoping to recreate the strike and mass protests seen nationwide to mark the same day in 2018. But things are different this year. Political parties are already busy campaigning for upcoming snap general elections on April 28 and European, regional and municipal polls on 26th May. The ruling Socialist party, centreright Ciudadanos and the conservative Popular Party (PP) have

all raced to pledge to do their bit against gender inequality in a country with a strong feminist movement. But virulent anti-feminism rhetoric has also made its entrance, with farright party Vox and an ultraconservative association that chartered a bus with the slogan “#StopFeminazis” coupled with a picture of Hitler wearing pink lipstick. Feminism — defined as the advocacy of women’s rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes — like poverty or wealth redistribution, are usually more the remit of the left, says Cristina Monge, sociology professor at the University of Zaragoza. Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has made them a central theme of his campaign. On Friday in its cabinet meeting, the

socialist government — which has the most female ministers in Spain’s history — approved a number of progressive measures. Among them, a gradual increase in paternity leave so that it equals maternity leave by 2021, and more transparency on salaries in companies. They aim to reduce the gender pay gap, which stood at 14.2 percent in Spain and 16.2 percent in the European Union in 2016, according to the latest Eurostat figures. But Spain’s right-wing parties have also embraced feminism for years, even if they have not called to mobilise on 8th March. Centre-right party Ciudadanos recently unveiled a manifesto for “liberal feminism” that defends gender equality and “doesn’t exclude men.” Conservative PP meanwhile has glossed over a speech by its leader Pablo Casado criticising abortion and is pledging to reduce the gender pay gap and help women enter the labour market. “Let’s not let them speak in our name,” said outgoing parliament speaker Ana Pastor in a PP campaign video — in reference to the left. “That’s tangible proof that feminism is here to stay and sells” politically, Professor Monge said. “Many rightwing people… won’t tolerate that their party oppose it.” In Spain, 77 percent say a strike on 8th March is justified, according to a survey by polling firm Metroscopia published recently.

The bus chartered by conservative, Catholic association HazteOir (“Make

against men. Prosecutors in Barcelona asked the bus to be stopped when it came to the Mediterranean city, charging it incites hate and discrimination, but a judge refused to do so, citing freedom of expression. Meanwhile the “Women of the World Global Platform,” a Spanish initiative that groups together conservative associations from around the world, has called for a counter-protest in central Madrid on 10th March. International Women’s Day “has

yourself heard”), which compares feminists to Nazis, has been driving around the country for several days. It is protesting against a law fighting gender violence, another for gender equality and yet more for LGBT rights, arguing these all discriminate

converted into a day for those who reject femininity as well as masculinity, complementarity, maternity and dedication to the family,” spokeswoman Leonor Tamayo said in a statement. “But we want to celebrate it, confirm it and reclaim it.”

That, however, is five percentage points less than a year ago, particularly among those on the right as Vox’s popularity increases. The farright party, which could play a decisive role after elections in helping other right-wing parties secure a majority in parliament, opposes a law against gender violence that it feels is “ideological” and “discriminatory” towards men.

ello, my name is Jane Troubridge. I have been living in Spain for 11 years and feel very lucky that my three children and two grandchildren all live close to me in Spain. My husband has a successful business here and we feel truly blessed. However, life has not always been so good, in fact, for many years my life was pretty horrendous. The positive I take from surviving those dark days is the experience and empathy that I am able to share with others. I am proud to be a volunteer of Help Vega Baja and privileged to be the Coordinator of a very special team of compassionate Help Vega Baja volunteers called “The Connections Team.” My family is the most precious thing in my life, closely followed by The Connections Team, whichI consider, my second family. I was honored to work with the Help Vega Baja committee to introduce a new service to the charity. This wonderful new service aims to provide 24-hour emotional support and guidance to the practical support that Help Vega Baja are, and have been providing to so many peoplefor

many years. This service has proven to be immensely successful in helping people take positive steps forward in a times of need, by combining emotional and practical support in a professional and supportive manner. The team currently has 12 carefully trained listeners. Emotional support is available by calling 965021552, 24-hours a day, everyday of the year, or by email at support@helpvegabaja.com. We also welcome people to pop in our meeting places for a cuppa and a chat, these are open Monday- Friday.Times and places advertised on our website. So, what do we mean by emotional support and how does “Connections”help? We listen to anybody about anything that is troubling them in complete confidence and without judgement. It maybe relationship problems, financial issues, health concerns, anxiety, depression, bereavement, loneliness, abuse, addictions and many more. Actively listening to someone is a very special gift to give someone. If you think about it in today’s society, how often do we truly listen? I admit that, like most of us, when listening

to friends and family I often peek at my mobile or load the dishwasher or perhaps think about what to cook for dinner. However, when on a Connections duty, a listener is carefully trained to be totally focused on actively listening to our callers, for those minutes the listener will shut the world out and give 100% commitment to every word spoken. By doing this we are able to give our callers time and space to gently explore their feelings in a safe and supportive environment, enabling them to offload difficult and sometimes overwhelming emotions. Of course, byhaving no emotional connection to our callers, they will feel comfortable to voice any feelings without fear of hurting our feelings. We continue to provide this emotional support for as long as our caller feels they need us to, and where necessary we can give guidance to practical support with our Help Vega Baja Welfare Officer, Help Vega Baja Committee, social workers, British Consulate, charities, organisations and counsellors. Over the coming months we are going to be discussing specific issues within the community that we feel the Help Vega Baja Connection volunteerscan help with. The first being loneliness, which is an increasing concern for the expat community. Many people find themselves alone in Spain due to bereavement of a loved one, often with all their other family members and friends in the UK. Sometimes their carefully chosen home in asemi-rural situation enjoyed with a loved one, can leave them feeling isolated, trapped and lonelywhen their loved one has gone. Not wishing to burden

Peter Andre in Leaving Neverland

Billie Faiers poses in £1,500 beach gear

Teen Peter Andre was spotted in the Leaving Neverland documentary as it was revealed he came second in the dance competition that led to Wade Robson's fateful meeting with Michael Jackson. Peter Andre came second in the 1987 Michael Jackson dancing competition which took place in Brisbane, Australia, in 1987 when he was aged 15. Wade Robson, now 36, who accuses Jackson of sexual abuse, won the contest when he was aged five - two years younger than the entry age. Judges allowed Wade to perform anyway and the crowd went so wild, they allowed him to win. Peter would have won if he judges had applied the age limit. Wade's prize was to meet Michael Jackson and the two developed a firm friendship. Leaving Neverland details the alleged abuse that took place at Jackson's home.

Billie posed as husband Greg Shepherd poked fun at claims their 'raucous' Maldives wedding turned 'paradise turned into Southend'. Her saucy white Norma Kamali swimsuit, rang in at £215 while her Chanel sunglasses cost £415 to match her earrings, which average around £600, while her bespoke hat from an Instagram boutique costs roughly £250. The couple's nuptials have been marred with controversy after they were accused of ruining fellow holidaymakers' dream getaways. Family and friends at the wedding of Billie and long-term love Greg have been accused of causing 'carnage' and ruining a holiday of a lifetime. Adding to the raucous insight was Ferne McCann, who shared a clip at midday local time of a group enjoying a glass of wine - proving the party started early.

R. Kelly’s former lawyer says star was ‘guilty as hell’ Ed Genson represented R. Kelly for over a decade and described him as being 'guilty as hell' for the child pornography charges he was acquitted of in 2008. According to the 77-year-old, to keep the singer out of jail, Genson ordered him to get antilibido shots in a bid to stem his sexual urges. Genson claims he also had to re-write the lyrics to the original version of 'Ignition' because he thought it hinted that Kelly was into underage girls. The singer was indicted on 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse against four women on February 22. He gave an explosive interview to CBS this week, where he urged his accusers to 'Quit playing' and had to be physically restrained as he protested his innocence.

their families living so many miles away, these feelings can become despairing.People caring for a loved one 24 hours a day can feel alone with little, if anytime, to socialise with friends or offload the difficulties they face every day. Some people may feel alone with a problem, they may have many people around them but unable to share their difficult feelings with these people and therefore also feel isolated with distressing emotions. Couples can also feel isolated and lonely perhaps on urbanisations that feel empty in the winter months or unable to get out and about due to physical difficulties, not able to join in activities or socialise. Added to this, is the language barrier.Imagine for a moment someone living alone and not even being able to talk to someone at their local shops, pharmacy, perhaps not voicing anything or understanding any conversation for days on end, not being able to share even the smallest of worries which is a natural thing for us all to do.Connections listeners alsoprovide emotional support with the “Keep in Touch Scheme”.We will telephone people on the scheme who sometimes feel lonely or isolated,on agreed days for a chat. This is a very important part of our service, providing our community with a friendly voice and listening ear as this may be the onlytime they have had an opportunity to chat in days. Chatting through day to day worries can prevent these feelings from escalating and building layer upon layer of distress, which may lead to overwhelming emotions of despair or suicidal thoughts. In addition to Connections and the

Keep in Touch Scheme, Help Vega Baja are proud to announce their new Befriending Service. This new service provides a volunteer to go along and sit with someone, have a chat over a cup of teaand maybe more importantly, provide a carer with a few hours to themselves whilst their loved one has someone to keep them company. Our volunteers also visit people who are lonely and perhaps unable to leave their home through physical disability and therefore have little, if any, interaction with others. We are also happy to visit people who are residing in a nursing home. Many elderly people have limited Spanish, and nursing homes which are predominantly Spanish, can at times be quite isolating. The new Befriending Service and the Welfare team,, which also provide visits and offer advice, work well with the Connections Team and provides well rounded support for people in our community. Being a listener is one of the best skills I have learnt, I am blessed to be volunteering with such kind and wonderfully warm people and to becontributing to the amazing work of such a successful charity.I find my role immensely rewarding, I often hear the words“thank you for listening”. If you would like to find out more about HELP Vega Baja, visit their webpage at www.helpvegabaja.com or their active Facebook page. Anyone interested in learning how to become a listener can contact Jane via the HELP Vega Baja San Miguel Centre on 966 723 733 or 865 661 497.

The film was released on July 1, 2015 and received generally positive reviews from critics and grossed $122 million. It's been three years since Tampa based Mike Lane transitioned from the life of a stripper his stage name being Magic Mike - to his dream of starting his own custom furniture business, those three years mixed in terms of the goods and bads for him personally. His ex-troupe, the Kings of Tampa, minus who was their boss, Dallas, stop off in Tampa from their current home base in Miami on a road trip to a stripper convention in Myrtle Beach. As the remaining troupe members are nearing the end of their stripping lives, they, like Mike, who are at an advanced age beyond that of most strippers, they see this convention as their final hurrah in this life. Mike decides to join his old friends on the road trip to this send off. The current troupe members start to have their own dreams about their futures in being with Mike, while Mike has his own envy of his friends in his current life not being everything he hoped it would be.

FAMILY ILLNESS FOR TAYLOR SWIFT Taylor Swift has revealed that her mother's cancer has returned as she addresses 'learning how to handle serious illness in my family'. The star who turns 30 this year, said that her mum Andrea's cancer has returned as she reflected on her upcoming milestone. The Shake It Off hitmaker told how both her parents had battled the disease. Taylor said: 'Both of my parents have had cancer, and my mom is now fighting her battle with it again. It’s taught me that

there are real problems and then there’s everything else. My mom’s cancer is a real problem. 'I used to be so anxious about daily ups and downs. I give all of my worry, stress, and prayers to real problems now.' In 2015, Taylor revealed that her mother had been diagnosed with cancer, she made the announcement via her Tumblr page, having asked her 61-year-old mum Andrea to go to a doctor for checks

just to 'ease some of her worries'. The singer has always had a strong relationship with her parent and in the past she sweetly revealed: 'She's always been the friend that was always there. There were times when, in middle school and junior high, that I didn't have a lot of friends. But my mom was always my friend.' As part of her embracing 'real problems', Taylor went on to reveal that

she's 'stopped hating every ounce of fat on her body' and that she works on 'accepting her body every day'. She said: 'I learned to stop hating every ounce of fat on my body. I worked hard to retrain my brain that a little extra weight

means curves, shinier hair, and more energy. 'I think a lot of us push the boundaries of dieting, but taking it too far can be really dangerous. There is no quick fix. I work on accepting my body every day.' Taylor also spoke about overcoming bullying, revealing it would be nice if she could get an apology from her bullies. She said: 'I learned that disarming someone’s petty bullying can be as simple as learning to laugh. In my experience, I’ve come to see that bullies want to be feared and taken seriously.”

Beach for dogs will continue

Neighbourhood watch – a singing success

Caterpillars appear earlier each year

A court has endorsed the town hall’s decision to designate la Cala del MoroCala del Mal Paso as a beach where dogs and their owners can bathe together. The court in Elche has agreed with Torrevieja town hall about the choice and the way in which the town hall went about it. The court case was filed by a community of owners with property in Cala del Moro. They argued that the town

Although there was plenty of business to cover at the La Siesta/ San Luis Neighbourhood Watch monthly meeting as usual, there was also opportunity to enjoy some singing. A new local choir, Dawn Chorus, were there to entertain and lighten up what can be a difficult agenda at times. They sang a selection of popular music to the 80 or more residents who had turned out that day. This month one of the main areas of concern were the recent criminal activities in the area. The Director of the Foreigners Office, Carlos Gonzales, was also there to provide an update on city council activity including changes to the location of the padrón office. Mark Nolan gave an interesting and informative presentation from the N332 team on recent updates to traffic law and the new English version of the Spanish Highway Code. He also talked about best driving practice in Spain and speed limits. Time was taken to thank the chairman, Doug Allen, for his dedication. Next month’s meeting will include information on the progress of new council contracts for street lighting and waste. Suzanne O’Connell

A number of sightings of processionary caterpillars have now been reported in the Torrevieja area. This pest creates great concern amongst pet owners as the hairs from the caterpillar can cause a severe allergic reaction. In order to reduce the possibility of pets being affected, the council treats public areas where they have been seen. One of these recently has been adjacent to Calle Mozart, the street running alongside the natural park in La

the first caterpillars had been spotted three weeks previously on the ground in the area across from the Sol Apartments. The answer appears to be linked to the earlier appearance each year of the caterpillars. In reply, Councillor Carmen Morate explained that the caterpillars are traditionally seen in the spring time but their appearance seems to be brought forward each year. Now, January and February are frequently the months when they are first being spotted.

Siesta. The council placed a warning notice on the gates to the park following treatment in this area to kill the caterpillars. The sign warned people usually using the park that they should not enter for the three days following the treatment taking place. Costa Blanca People received a request for information from a concerned dog owner living on the street. Her question was why had it taken the council so long to deal with the problem when

Although apologising for the lateness she says, ‘It’s difficult to tell when the caterpillars will suddenly appear. It can also be difficult for the company used to exterminate them to react immediately when sightings are passed on. We would like to thank people, however, for the information they send us about where these creatures are so that we can inform the right department and take measures as soon as possible.’ Suzanne O’Connell

hall should have consulted them before taking the decision to allow dogs to bathe there too. However, the judge ruled that the town hall’s consultation with officials was sufficient for the project to go ahead. Reports were received from the local police and a town biologist. This area was recommended as being the most suitable for the purpose. As well as this stretch of coastline, part of the Punta Margalla beach was put forward as being suitable too. The court found that the town hall had made sufficient enquiries to reach their decision and that they did not need to extend the process to include a wider perspective. Those living nearby have been very vocal in their opposition. They have staged several protests and there have been clashes with supporters of the new designation and with bathers themselves. Prior to the town hall’s decision, the Cala del Moro was hardly known or visited. It is located in an area where the cliffs begin between La Mata and Torrevieja. There is a small, sandy cove and the rest is low cliff with rock. A wooden ramp has been installed to improve access. Councillor Carmen Morate was pleased to hear the outcome of the case. She has campaigned for a beach where dog owners could take their pets and was clear that the town hall had followed the proper procedures. However, she also indicated that the process wasn’t perfect and there is the intention of a wider consultation which is expected to take place around election time. Suzanne O’Connell

Classic drinks to order at a bar Barflies have been sipping classic cocktails for decades because they're timeless—a martini, old fashioned, and daiquiri will simply never go out of style. Here are the best ones to order at a bar...

Margarita

- 2.5 oz champagne - 2.5 oz orange juice

Cloyingly sweet margarita mixes have given this drink a bad name. A well-made version is a fresh mix of lime juice and tequila, with a hint of sweetener: - 2 oz silver tequila - 1 oz Cointreau - 1 oz lime juice - Salt for the rim

Gimlet

Moscow Mule

Sazerac

Popular for good reason, the Moscow Mule is one of the most refreshing things to sip on a hot summer day. Its suggested vessel, a copper mug, also just looks sharp. - 2 oz vodka - 4 to 6 oz ginger beer - .5 oz lime juice

If you like a drink with some bite, give this classic New Orleans concoction a try. - 2 oz rye whiskey - .5 oz simple syrup - 2 dashes Peychaud's bitters - Absinthe

Whiskey Sour

Pimm's Cup

Perhaps the most refreshing whiskey cocktail, this is an old reliable favourite. - 2 oz whiskey - 1 oz lemon juice - 1 tsp sugar - 1 egg white (optional)

The first official Pimm's bar popped up at the 1971 Wimbledon tournament, and now more than 80,000 pints of the quintessential British summer cocktail are served to spectators every year. Here's the official recipe courtesy of Pimm's: - 50 ml (about 1.75 oz) Pimm's No.1 - 150 ml (about 5 oz) lemonade - Mint, orange, strawberries - Cucumber to garnish

Manhattan Created sometime in the mid-1800s, the Manhattan is one of the booziest classic drink recipes. - 2 oz rye whiskey - 1 oz sweet vermouth - 2 dashes Angostura bitters

Mimosa The recipe just might be the simplest cocktail ever created: just combine equal parts of the ingredients in a champagne flute.

The classic recipe calls for gin, but this drink is just as tasty if you substitute vodka instead. - 2 oz gin or vodka - .75 oz simple syrup - .75 oz lime juice

Mint Julep -2 oz bourbon - 8-10 mint leaves - .25 oz simple syrup Muddle the mint leaves and simple syrup in a mint julep cup. Add bourbon and fill with crushed ice. Stir until the cup is frosted. Fill with more crushed ice. Serve with a straw and a mint sprig garnish.

Amazing things you can do in a microwave If your microwave is relegated to reheating leftovers and making porridge, then you’re not using it to its full potential! Microwaves are the ultimate in cheat gadgetry, and open up a whole world of culinary possibilities for breakfast and lunch when you’re at work, too...

Bacon Forget scrubbing greasy frying pans – use a microwave to cook bacon and minimise the cleanup. Take a large piece of kitchen paper, lay rashers of bacon in the centre and wrap the ends of the paper over the top to enclose the rashers. Turn the parcel over so the seam is on the bottom and put on a plate. Microwave for 3-4min on high, until the bacon is crispy. It really is that simple!

Microwave crisps Make yourself a bowl of fresh, crunchy crisps in less time than it takes to go to the shops. Slice a small potato as thinly as possible (use a mandolin if you have one), then toss the slices in a bowl with a drizzle of oil until coated. Lay slices in a single layer on a large baking parchment-covered plate, sprinkle with salt and microwave in 1min bursts on high until golden and crisp.

Poached eggs Poached eggs at work? Yes please! Fill a coffee mug one-third full with water, then microwave for 30sec on high. Remove mug, crack in an egg, then cover with a plate. Cook on low power for 1min. Carefully uncover and check to see how the cooked egg is – if the white is not fully cooked, microwave for another 10sec at low power. Repeat in 10sec bursts until the egg is done to your liking. Use a spoon to carefully hold the egg in the cup while you drain and discard the water, then serve. Make cakes in your microwave. In a mug.

Keep all the ingredients for this gooey chocolate cake in your store cupboard, and you’ll be able to whip up a luxurious dessert in an instant. Perfect for when a friend pops round unexpectedly, or you’re hankering for a sweet treat and the shops are shut.

French toast Okay, so this is a little more akin to a bread and butter pudding, but they’re practically the same thing. Crack an egg into a mug, add a splash of milk, a teaspoon of sugar and 1/2tsp vanilla extract, then beat together with a fork. Tear a couple of slices of bread into pieces, add to the mug and stir until the bread is completely coated. Microwave on medium in 1min bursts until firm (ours took 3min) and serve topped with sliced banana or berries. You could even make the egg mixture in a flask at home and take it to the office to make breakfast there. Any excuse to have a bottle of syrup in your desk drawer...

Microwave meringues (SEE ABOVE) Think meringues take ages to make? Think again! To make our speedy Microwavable Meringue, you simply stir egg white and icing sugar together. They’re ideal when you need meringues for Eton mess, or to crumble over ice cream.

Royal British Legion Band needs you

Anything Goes!

The Royal British Legion band is a nonmilitary concert band that helps raise money for the Royal British Legion in Spain and local worthy causes. It consists of retired musicians of all nationalities and is currently looking for new members to help it to expand. The band has local roots evolving from the Alpengold Oompah band, the Vega Baja Big Band, Just Brass and most recently the Phoenix Concert Band and now wants to add to the number of type of instruments in the band to offer a more symphonic sound. In addition to the desire to add a new string section, the RBL Band is specifically looking for a cornet player, a trombone player, a drummer and a bass guitarist. However, there are always vacancies for brass, woodwind and percussion musicians. The band has a unique approach in that it wants to work with other bands by sharing skilled musicians, which makes perfect sense in a small community where there simply may not be enough specific instrument players to sustain each band. Music readers are preferable, but lessons can be

Cancer mortality falls 27% in two decades Cancer mortality has fallen by 27% since 1991, says Doctor Antonio Brugarolas, Head of the Oncology Platform at Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja. The data, recently published by the American Cancer Society in Cancer Journal, can be applied, in a general way, to the western world, since the professional, healthcare and healthcare technology approaches are generally shared with Europe, Doctor Brugarolas told us. Another notable fact appearing in the study is the stabilisation of the incidence of cancer in women, and its reduction, by 2%, in men. “When different types of cancers are studied,” explains Doctor Brugarolas, “the

incidence reduction refers to lung, breast, prostate and colorectal cancers, in other words, the most common cancers in men and women. On the other hand, this period has seen an increase in incidents of melanoma and liver, pancreatic and thyroid cancers.” Advances in oncology have mainly translated to good results in terms of curing prostate and breast cancers, as well as melanoma. “Tumours with poor results are still pancreatic, liver, oesophagus and lung, though we have also achieved better survival results for these,” the specialists points out. “We can’t point to one advance that has been extraordinary or exclusive in these results,” indicates

Doctor Brugarolas, “and we must consider that the adoption, by the population, of a healthy lifestyle, is a priority, with an appropriate diet, exercising more, preventing obesity, and timely check-ups for early breast, gynaecological, colorectal, prostate and lung cancer detection.” The Oncology Platform at Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja is a national and international benchmark in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Made up of a team of over 10 top-tier professionals, it offers integral, personalised attention to oncological patients from the first moment of diagnosis, with cutting-edge technology and several pioneer curing programmes.

Tech Fact

In 1956, 5 megabytes (5MB) of data weighed a ton Gary via email asks: Hello Aunty. When I go on to the Internet with Chrome to get my Gmail emails I keep getting my Google search page in Spanish. I have followed your previous instructions and set www.google.com as my home page but when it loads it seems to change to www.google.es and gives me mostly Spanish search results. My Nephew found me a way around this by adding “www.gmail.co.uk” as a bookmark but it’s not the tidiest solution. Aunty Says: Hi Gary. I think what you have done here is a very easy mistake where you have used the .com ending instead of the .co.uk. Basically what happens here is that Chrome is trying to be helpful and has detected you are in Spain and returning what it thinks are most relevant search results, but by using the .co.uk extension you are directing everything to UK based sources. This works with most websites and Amazon & EBay are great examples. For those of you who need a reminder of how to set your homepage; go to the settings section of Google Chrome (click on the three dots in the top right corner) and change the “on startup” and “search” sections to google.co.uk (or .ie for Ireland) and you should find you get a lot more relevant results from any searches. It was 1956 when IBM launched RAMAC, the first computer with something like a hard drive that we use today. By hard drive, we mean something that used magnetic disks - a moving head was used to access and write that data. At the time, it was considered a massive leap in mass storage technology because it signified a shift: from punch cards and magnetic tape

comes to keeping them clean. What is the best thing for doing this? Aunty Says; Hello June. Touch screens are not particularly delicate as they have been designed and tested to handle all sorts of poking with sticky and greasy fingers. I use the cheap microfiber cloths from Mercadona which I slightly dampen with a mix of bottled water and a couple of drops of white vinegar. You can also add a few drops surgical alcohol onto the cloth to help sterilize the screen as you can never be sure where those fingers have been. Martin via email asks: Hello Aunty, 3 months ago I treated myself to a new laptop and recently I am receiving notification that the trial version of my McAfee security program has expired. and I don’t know if I should pay, if it is safe to do this over the internet or just ignore it. What do you recommend? I am fairly new to computers so please explain in basic language Aunty Says: Hello Martin. The free trial from MacAfee was probably pre-installed on your laptop but it can also get installed when you updated some of your apps. I’m still a big fan of Window Defender that comes pre-bundled with Windows 10, and to be extra safe I still recommend having a separate antispyware programs like the free Malwarebytes. Well that’ll do for another week, email your problems to auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com and I will see what I can do.

The whole cabinet weighed over 1000kg and the 5MB data was spread over 50 huge aluminium disks, coated with magnetic iron oxide. The disks rotated at a speed of 1200rpm and the machines were leased for $3,200 per month back in the day.

Who’s taking YOU home this Choosing a Crash St Patrick’s Day? Helmet Last week, a British road traffic patrol stopped a motorcyclist who was riding with a builder´s hardhat tied on with a piece of string. The rider didn´t realise that they had done anything wrong, believing that a helmet is a helmet. They were educated by the patrol. Crash helmets for riding a motorbike or scooter in Spain must be of an approved type. However, in addition to the legal requirements, there are also other matters that should be taken into consideration. The Spanish national association of companies representing the industry, (Asociación Nacional de Empresas del Sector de Dos Ruedas), offer these handy tips. You must be able to see the ECE

It must not move or fall on the driver's eyes or apply pressure on the forehead. It must not hinder the driver's peripheral vision. St Patrick´s Day is a unique day of celebrations around the world, including here in Spain, where we all know one of the biggest parades and parties outside Ireland takes place, at Cabo Roig, but whilst we are all welcome to enjoy ourselves, it is important we do so responsibly. The Costa Blanca People is amongst a number of supporters of the N332 #ChooseRight campaign, reminding everyone that drinking (or consuming drugs) does not mix with driving. N332 has also teamed up with the Orihuela Costa taxi drivers association, who are also supporting the campaign, displaying our unique stickers on all of the taxis, spreading the word and encouraging everyone to #ChooseRight. In Spain there are tough penalties for being over the limit, a limit which is much lower than the UK for example, but the only safe limit is zero. If you are going out partying for Paddy´s Day, or any other reason, remember to #ChooseRight. Take a taxi, walk home if it´s safe to, or allocate a designated driver who will stay on soft drinks all day. As a group, you can always treat your designated driver by paying for their drinks all day, or rewarding them some other way. However you are getting there, wherever there might be, remember that as well as enjoying the party, there will come a time when you have to go home, and when you do, #ChooseRight.

Towing a UK trailer abroad – The rules are changing If you have a UK registered trailer, either currently in the UK, or if you are planning to bring one to Spain, the rules are changing, not affecting Spain directly, but the countries which surround it. From 28 March 2019, it is mandatory for certain trailers taken out of the UK to be registered with the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency). Trailers with a gross weight of over 750kg used for commercial purposes, and those with a gross weight over 3,500kg which are used towed by private vehicles, must be registered and have the registration documents with the vehicle towing them. The change is a long awaited compliance by the UK with the

requirements of the UN 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic, which the UK has ratified. Although much of the UK´s traffic law already complies with the convention, the registration of trailers is one element which was outstanding. This will come into force on 28 March 2019. In order to comply with the agreement, trailers that are used internationally in countries also covered by the convention must be registered, if they fall into the required categories. A full list of countries is available, along with more information, on the UK government website gov.uk/guidance/trailer-registration, where you will see that you do not need to register trailers used in Spain, but you

must register if you drive through the countries which surround Spain, i.e. France, or Portugal, as well as other countries. In order to try to make the process easier, and because there is expected to be a large number of trailers that fall into the categories, the DVLA has launched a new website, where the information on the trailer can be submitted, before the registration certificate is sent to you through the post, and an email confirmation, which will allow you to then have the number plate made which must be displayed on the trailer. You can register your trailer, and find out more, here: gov.uk/register-trailerto-take-abroad

Elderly couple catch 130,000 speeding drivers in one week A retired couple decided to take it upon themselves to catch drivers speeding through their quiet Kent village. The 71 year olds, Malcolm and Joan Buller, had grown tired of drivers racing through their village of Staplehurst and

managed to clock 130,000 speeders in just one week. The couple enlisted a team of volunteers and using their own speed guns and high visibility jackets, found that over half the drivers passing through the village broke the 30mph limit with over 150 drivers clocked doing more than 70mph in the 30 zone. The self styled speed squad measured 284,024 vehicles at points along Staplehurst's four main roads over a week in November of last year. The pair now hope their findings will force authorities to install a much-needed speed camera in the village. Had a speed camera been installed last year, according to the Bullers’ data, a daily average of 19,000 speeding fines would have been issued. Mr Buller, told the media: “When I told people the figures at the forum, they were

just open-mouthed in shock. We live here and really don’t want to become an accident statistic.” Another local said: “Something does need to be done before children are killed. We’re going to try to get a speed camera installed. “It’s a long, straight road so people just welly it. So it’s only a matter of time before tragedy

More than 27,700 people participate in local sport The councillor for Sport, Víctor Valverde, has announced the results of sporting events in Orihuela in 2018. "This report shows the involvement of this Council and all associations or clubs involved in sport across our municipality." According to the report, last year a total of 97 sporting events were held in Orihuela in which 27,770 people participated, reaching an average of 8 events per month. Regarding the geographical distribution, Valverde explained that 49 percent of the sporting events have taken place in the center of Orihuela, with an average of 3.91 events per month, while 32 percent have been developed in Orihuela Costa, 13 percent in districts and the remaining 6 percent in events that were held in several population centres. The sporting event of greater participation was held in the Casco, and was the Race of the Cities Against Cancer of Pancreas with a total of 4,700 athletes, organised by the Association Spanish Pancreatology, the Pancreatic

Cancer Association and the Sports Department of the City of Orihuela. The largest participation event in Orihuela Costa was the ARENA 1000 Playas de Orihuela Costa Blanca Trophy, held at Cala Bosque (La Zenia), with a participation of 1,200 Beach Handball players. M.ª Dolores Castejón thanked the support offered by the City of Orihuela in the organisation of the Race of the Cities Against Cancer of the Pancreas. "A competition with the largest number of participants of all events this year and with which we raised funds for research and I hope this race is consolidated and we consider it as a sporting act and solidarity too." The sport with the greatest participation was Athletics, representing a total of 15,951 athletes and the clubs that developed the most events were Las Colinas Golf & Country Club and C.D.S Orcelis, both with 11 events. The number of sporting events held in the municipality increased compared to the previous year. "This shows a clear

improvement since 2017, as we have increased in 9 annual events, from 88 to 97 in 2018, as well as we have increased the figures in participation, with a difference of 8,403 participants from the

previous year," Valverde said. Municipal Grants Víctor Valverde also wanted to highlight the grants for the organisation,

promotion and development of sporting events and physical activity, which distributed approximately 49,700 euros to different entities and sports associations.

Gusty Cobras go down at Denia Quesada Denia Club de Rugby 22 – 0 Costa Cobras Club de Rugby On February 22nd the Costa Cobras Club de Rugby were invited to play Denia Club de Rugby. This was to be their first fully contested match. Denia who at the moment are flying high in the league and are unbeaten in their last six matches, so they were looking forward to receiving a new look Cobras side who were extremely pumped up. The Cobras left La Marina with a bus full of supporters and very confident. The first half was a close affair with the referee commenting ‘It was worthy of any division one fixture’. The second half showed Denia’s classy backs as they slowly pulled away from the tired legs of the Cobras. The final score saw the hosts winning 22-0 which did flatter

them as the Cobras defence was enormous. The Cobras would like to thank Mac from Denia for the invite and we look forward to the return match at our home ground at Football de Campo, La Marina village in the near future.

The day ended with the inaugural pint of Guinness while watching Ireland v England. If anyone is interested in playing, training or just to get fit contact us on our Facebook: s.f.costacobras or telephone Corky 664013129.

Lo Crispin Golf Society Twenty two members and one guest played for the Society's first major of the year, the 'Claret Jug' on 6th. March. The sky was overcast and remained so throughout the day. Just as the first group was' teeing off ' the wind started to blow. The winds seemed to steadily increase throughout the day and undoubtedly blew away most players hopes of achieving a good score! The only good thing about the weather, was that there was no rain. The Claret Jug was presented to the winner, Eddy Downing, who flew in from Liverpool to take part ( with a score of 27pts. off 16) at the Lo Crispin Tavern after the game, where as usual we were supplied with Tapas from the friendly and helpful staff. Winner of the Claret Jug - Eddy Downing 27pts off 16 (on count back) 2nd. Place - Dicky Claeys 27 pts. off 8 (on count back) 3rd. Place - Rose Anne Reynaert 27 pts. off 31 (on count back) 4th. Place - Adrian Aspbury 26 pts. off 10 N. T. P. on Par 3s Hole 3 - Nobody managed to reach or stay on the green

Hole 9 - Meirion Roberts Hole 15 - Peter Morris Hole 17 - Ron Perkins There was just 1 winner of the 2s pot; Meirion Roberts ( one of our mercurial Welsh members). For those of you who know La Serena, with its abundance of 'agua' we usually run a competition to guess the total number of lost balls by all players on the day. The winner was Geoff Dowsett who correctly guessed that 104 balls would be lost. Finally, Paul 'lucky' Flanaghan maintained his winning streak, winning the Free Game Raffle. The Society's next game is at Font Del Llop on 20th. March. Anyone interested in joining the Society or playing as a guest, should contact any member of the Committee, whose contact details can be

found on the Society's website. Steve Harrington (Handicap and Membership Secretary)

Bowls Club Report With just a few weeks left to the end of the Winter season the competition has certainly been fierce as all of the teams try to consolidate their position in the league tables. In the South Alicante Winter League, Quesada Pearls put on a sterling performance against Montemar Matadors winning the match 10-2 and shots 81-67. This means the Pearls maintain their 4th place in the league just one point behind San Miguel Beagles. Meanwhile the Diamonds had a tough match against La Marina Explorers, who won the match 3 rinks to 2 and the shots 96-71. So Explorers won overall, 8 points to 4. The Rubies had a better result this week with a 6 all draw against La Marina Pathfinders, who won the shots 98-82 In the Southern League Quesada Swans played Horadada Royals. It was a competitive match with the Swans winning on 2 rinks while the Royals won on 3 rinks and also won the shots 99-77 so the points were 8-4 in favour of the Royals. The Swifts returned to Montemar this week to face the Matadors. It was a nail-biting match with 3 of the rinks decided on the last end. The Swifts managed a win and with the points 8-4 this means the Swifts will hold on to their 2nd place in the league. In the Winter league, Quesada had a bye this week and are now in 5th place in the league just 2 points behind Emerald Isle. In the Federated 4’s Quesada Panthers had an incredibly close and competitive match against San Luis Ospreys. All of the rinks were decided on the last end and the final score was 2 rinks won by the Ospreys (16-14 and 17-15) with one rink drawn 15-15, so the points went to the Ospreys, 7-1. Just a reminder that we welcome both new and experienced bowlers. We’re a friendly club with a mixture of competition, league and casual players. In addition to league matches and Club competitions we have our popular Saturday morning chicken drive which is open to visitors, and we have free coaching for new members. Getting sacked in the morning ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

DEAR READER, I am sure we can all agree that Manchester City don’t really need any extra help winning the Premier League title. After all, they’ve already seen Liverpool give up their ten point (or whatever it was) lead at the top of the table in the space of a few weeks. They’ve watched Tottenham do what Tottenham do and fade the moment someone suggested they might be in the title race. And even though Sarriball made an unbeaten start, City can watch the chaos at Chelsea with a grin on their face knowing that they won’t be the team stopping them getting back-toback titles for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson managed it with United in 2009. So why, oh why did the referee on Saturday night decide that he would interpret the rules in his own special way and ignore the advice of his assistant? For those that have not seen it, Raheem Sterling was offside after Sergio Aguero flicked the ball on in the match against Watford. Granted, Sterling is not technically offside until he makes a move to the ball, which he did. That move to said ball meant that the Watforddefender felt overwhelmingly compelled to do that he is paid to do; try and defend. He touched the ball before Sterling meaning the last touch before Sterling got the ball came off a Watford player. And Sterling scored. Now, I’m not going to recite the laws of the game here. There is no point. They are as clear as mud. But the simple fact is that Sterling being there meant that the defender had to do something. Otherwise, what? Stand there and hope that the linesman is good enough to see Sterling is offside? Hang around doing nothing thinking, ‘oh well, VAR will sort this out next season’ and watch the City player tuck it away? Of course not. He has to do his job, for which he then got stupidly punished. Yes, City were better than Watford on the day. We know that. But, the score was 0-0 at the time and you just never know. City would have probably still won, but maybe not added a +3 to their goal difference. Maybe they would not have won. Maybe, just maybe, Watford would have nicked a goal of their very own. The fact is, nobody really knows anything other than that decision was wrong and it changed the game. It had been a tricky week for Peppy G and City, what with UEFA starting to sniff around the books sensing that there might have been a bit of Financial Unfair Play. On top of that, news broke (albeit probably fake news) that Guardiola had signed a contract with Juventus to take over as their manager next season. Guardiola denied this after the match but it was announced by the guy who said, three months before it happened when everyone was denying it, that Cristiano Ronaldo was going to Juventus. So, you never know. I have a plan for Jurgen Klopp to make it easier for Liverpool to win the league. Relocate. I mean, anyone who saw their victory over Burnley will agree that it is far too windy in Liverpool to win the league. Goodness knows how Bill Shankly, Bob Paisley, Joe Fagan and Kenny Dalglish managed to do it. Ashley Westwood’s corner must have got caught in a gust as it sailed over Alisson’s head and into the far corner. Mind you, the Liverpool keeper was

clearly being pinned to the floor by the Burnley centre-back at the time but as we already know, you cannot rely on a Premier League referee to spot the bleeding obvious. Liverpool recovered and sorted the situation out and, with City being in FA Cup action next weekend, could return to the top of the table if they collect three points in their next match. Klopp was in, er, red mist mode in the post-match presser, suggesting that people wouldn’t realise how well Mohamed Salah had played because he didn’t score. To be fair, with all that wind, I’m amazed Salah didn’t go over in the box more often. Jurgey-lad also claimed, ‘nobody gets rid of us’. Oh, Jurgen. That’s going to bite you. All good runs end eventually and Romelu Lukaku clearly used up all his goals in midweek against PSG. There wasn’t a lot between Arsenal and Manchester United at the Emirates other than Arsenal scored a freak goal and a soft penalty. If United had taken just one of their numerous chances, they’d have won. But, they didn’t and like when they lost to PSG a few weeks ago in Europe, it will be interesting to see how they bounce back. As for Arsenal, given their shambles of a performance in France on Thursday night, this was quite the way to bounce back and keep themselves firmly in the top four conversation. David de Gea can still be seen mumbling to himself about how late the ball moved and Lukaku is still out there right now trying to find the back of the net. Mauricio Pochettino is on an interesting path at the moment. Following Tottenham’s oh-sopredictable defeat at Southampton, the Poch accused his team of ‘arrogance’ and ‘complacency’ after they seemed to

stay in the changing room in the second half. Pochettino was in the stands for the match having been given a weird twomatch ban after having a chat with the referee after the Burnley defeat but it feels like he is starting to grease the wheels of his getaway vehicle in the summer. The only problem is, there doesn’t look like there’s a job for him. Jose Mourinho could well be appointed Real Madrid manager any time between now and Easter Sunday and can anyone really make a case for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer not getting the United job? The Poch might be thinking he is ready for his next gig, but the two he would love probably won’t be available to him so he might want to ease off alienating the players he could well be working with again next season. But hey, at least they’ll be in their shiny new stadium in April. What’s the quickest way to describe

the snoozefest that Chelsea and Wolves put out there? Chelsea were average and Eden Hazard saved them at the end, not for the first or last time. Newcastle United versus Everton saw a remarkable comeback that could have been easily avoided. Jordan Pickford, somewhat in a pickle at the moment, fumbled the ball once again and then rugby tackled Solomon Rondon to the

won 3-2 leaving Marco Silva ironically moaning about the fact that Ayoze Perez’s winner shouldn’t have stood. He’s right, it shouldn’t have but after getting away with a big one themselves, how could they moan? Brighton had their fair share of luck too as both their goalscorers against Crystal Palace shouldn’t have been on the pitch for different reasons. Glenn

ground when the big man just had a tap-in to draw Newcastle level. Inexplicably, Pickford wasn’t even booked and, you guessed it, saved the penalty. And, as almost always happens in these moments of controversy, Everton went up the other end and doubled their lead almost immediately. But, never forget that Everton are really not very good and Newcastle knew that. They turned it around and

Murray had been named as a substitute but started at the last minute after his replacement got injured in the warmup. Anthony Knockeart should have seen red after 30 seconds after his slightly over-enthusiastic studs-up challenge. He only got booked and, of course, went on to score a worldy to win the match. Uncle Roy also mentioned the wind being a factor in their defeat. What on earth has Klopp started? West Ham United went peak West

Ham United in their no-show against Cardiff City. Cardiff needed the win, if not just to end the laughable rumours that some people want rid of Neil Warnock. Even I cannot make a case for him to get sacked this season. It’s 100 up for Jamie Vardy at Leicester City now after the striker brought up a ton of Premier League goals in his team’s 3-1 over Fulham. Brentan won his first home game in charge and Fulham, bless them, were better but still not good enough. If Huddersfield cannot beat Bournemouth, a side without an away win since the good ol’ days of Jose being at Old Trafford, at home then they really should be relegated instantly. The Cherries won 2-0 with Callum Wilson back on the pitch and back in the goals. So that was the weekend. The biggest takeaway for me? I’m not sure I’ve ever seen such a collection of terrible refereeing as what we were treated to this weekend. Bring back David Elleray, please.
