The Winter Beach back on the coast L

uisa Boné, Councillor for Beaches has announced that “The Winter Beach” programme will be run once again in Orihuela Costa from the end of March. The initiative was first launched last year on La Caleta beach, Cabo Roig, due to demand from local residents who had been requesting year-round sports and leisure activities. The City Councillor said: “In 2018 the programme ran twice and both times it was very well received. Now we hope to improve the Winter Beach activities in 2019 and that the number of people taking part will increase.” The Municipal Departments for Beaches and Youth want to give people the opportunity to practice sports outside of the summer season, as the weather conditions are favourable most of the year round. The activities are once again being organised on the beach of La Caleta in Cabo Roig as this beach has the best conditions in winter of all the local beaches. It is a family

beach within a bay, with calm waters and the beach bar is also open all year round. Luisa Boné pointed out that“this time we will also be offering activites in June on other beaches in Orihuela Costa, such as Cala Capitan and in Aguamarina where people will be able to try snorkelling and make introductory sea dives. We are extending activities to these beaches in June as there is a large influx of bathers at this time and we want to give them the opportunity to personally experience the underwater world in all its diversity.” The Winter Beach program is for all ages. The idea is that every person in every family can go to the beach and take part in the activities offered on that day. Physical activities such as yoga, body balance, aerobics, water aerobics and Zumba are offered alongside workshops and games for the children. These workshops have been specially created to educate children in the preservation of, respect for and protection of the environment. There is also a range of

water activities such as paddle boarding, canoeing, snorkelling and introductory dives. To ensure people’s safety there will be a lifeguard service with two guards and an auxiliary boat. Winter Beach will begin on Sunday, 31st March and will begin with a masterclass in trampolining the first one ever held on the beaches of Orihuela. A total of 36 free activities are planned to take place on weekends from Sunday 31st March to Sunday, 9th June. The Councillor has asked locals to support the initiative by ‘joining in the activities, enjoying the beautiful beaches and having a good time at the Winter Beach’.

Two essential organisations that could save your life MABS and the AECC were the guests at the latest meeting of the Orihuela Costa Branch of the RBL which was held last week in Mil Palmeras. Hazel Merridew and Pamela Blanden spoke on behalf of the two organisations in which the pair explained how they work together to provide both preventative examinations and post diagnosis care and support to the general public. Hazel, based in San Javier, explained that the MABS Cancer Support Fundaciรณn, which covers the whole of the Costa Blanca, provides practical support and help for patients, information on cancers and treatments, translators and even drivers and transport to take people for hospital appointments and treatment. Pamela, meanwhile, who volunteers at the

Campoverde office of the AECC, located in Campoverde Town Hall, explained the testing facilities and examinations that are available for both men and for women through her organisation, at a minimal cost, examinations that could save your life. Further information on both organisations is available from 615 016 035 (MABS) or 690 195 117 (AECC Campoverde). Alimentos Solidarios opens its doors The food charity that serves meals to around 200 families a day has opened its kitchen again. Altogether €31,119 was raised in ten days to bring the food back to the table for those missing this service since it closed on 11th March due to lack of funds. The 25th March saw the return of the service in advance of the 1st April, when it had been hoped that the kitchen could be re-opened. There had been some debate about who was responsible for the lack of funds with some suggesting that a delay in receiving their town hall subsidy was the cause. However, the date of the annual subsidy has been similar each year and the organisation are keen not to lay the blame but move on, now that the funds have been found and the service can resume. Alimentos Solidarios would like to thank all those who contributed by donating to their appeal and a campaign is to be launched to recruit new members to the organisation to ensure that the situation does not happen again. Any donation to a charity such as this is tax deductible at the time of presenting the annual income tax declaration.

The town council of Torrevieja has published the rules and regulations that local tax drivers must fulfil to drive a cab in the town. Official taxi drivers are required to have passed a level of professional training that includes a knowledge of the environment along with managing relationships between driver and fare. It is a competitive area of work and is subject to a selection process for the 82 taxi licences on offer. However, those who already have a taxi licence do not need to reapply only those who wish to take it up. Alongside demonstrating a level of professionalism they must also provide a variety of medical certificates including a report from the Addictive Behaviour Unit. This must demonstrate that the applicant does not suffer from an addiction. Other checks include a criminal record check and they must, of course, hold a current driving licence that

includes the ability to drive a taxi. The announcement about the requirements was published this week in el Boletín Oficial de la Provincia. Altogether there are seven tests that the taxi drivers will have to pass to be accepted. The psychological test lasts for 20 minutes and there is a test to check that they understand the layout of Torrevieja and can find the most direct route to any destination point. They are also required to indicate the location of centres of interest such as public offices, hotels, places of leisure and entertainment. The tests also include 15 questions about the law and town byelaws and there is a written ten-minute test on a topic. The president of Radio Taxi Torrevieja expressed his satisfaction at the requirements, explaining that having them in place acted as a safeguard against others infiltrating this important role. BITE SIZE Huge demand for NEWS: help with rent Continued from page 3 concerts and other events in Torrevieja. However, the activities staged there have had to be powered by a generator rather than an electricity supply. The situation is now being rectified and it is expected that this summer, the planned events such as the International Habaneras competition will, at last, be wired up with their own low voltage electricity line.

Women creating history A series of workshops is being organised to take place in Torrevieja’s schools during March and April. The workshops are intended to demonstrate the contribution that women have made in the world, one that is not sufficiently recognised. The classes are aimed at young children of six and seven years old and will be delivered in an enjoyable way. Much of the story of world development focuses on the contribution made by men and very few women are credited for doing anything towards it. The workshops will touch on women’s achievements in relation to literary and artistic work, inventions and scientific achievements as well as rights and freedoms. These workshops are one small way in which young people can be encouraged to see the multiple roles there are in building a better future.

Business of the year The winner of the title of Business of the Year 2019, has been awarded to Confitería Torregrosa. The cakes and pastries shop has been an established part of Torrevieja town centre for the last 62 years and continues to remain a favourite with tourists and residents alike. Confitería Torregrosa is also known as Confitería Camarroja and is a family run business which is now in its third generation of ownership. The decision that it should take the prize was announced by the councillor for commerce, Manuela Osuna. Further announcements are now expected about the award ceremony.

New managing director of Hospital Torrevieja hospital is to have a new director. Doctor, María Eva Baró has been named as the new managing director of Torrevieja’s health service run by Ribera Salud Grupo. She replaces the previous post holder, Dr. José Antonio Velasco, on his retirement. Eva has an impressive list of qualifications as well as experience in healthcare management. She qualified as a doctor at la Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona. She has been linked to Torrevieja hospital since it first opened where she has been the head of the Nephrology Service since 2006. Eva is very excited about the new post.

Ex inspector of police acquitted The retired police inspector had been accused of illegally detaining five women following an alleged theft in Torrevieja’s market area. The incident happened in 2011 when the inspector was informed that a group of women Continued on page 8

More than 400 people have applied for assistance with their rent in Torrevieja. Last Friday was the deadline for the subsidies as set by the Valencian government. Altogether around 20 million euros had been set aside and was available to pay up to 50% of the rent to a maximum of €2,880. Councillor for housing, Fanny Serrano, explained that more than 400 people had put in a request, at least 20 people a day. A statistic that has meant that the housing department has had to establish an extra service over the past three weeks. This additional service was able to be offered through an employment programme. The service provided in the department of housing has largely been one of providing information and responding to requests. The actual application has had to be made at the PROP office itself. There is no automatic right to receive the grant and Councillor

Serrano has warned those applying that they are in competition with others throughout the Valencian community. Each application will be judged against a list of criteria. However, there is hope, as last year almost all those applying did receive some form of subsidy. This isn’t the only service that the property department offers. It operates on a very low budget to offer advice to people with questions about housing in the area. This includes those people coming to them who are having difficulties paying their mortgage. There is a currently a list of around 200 families who are at risk of failing to keep up with their payments and are being carefully monitored. Councillor Fanny Serrano thanked both the housing department and the PROP office for the additional work they have been doing over the past few weeks. Suzanne O’Connell

Thirteen people offer their walls In the run up to Torrevieja’s graffiti competition, there have been thirteen offers of wall space with only one not meeting the criteria. For the competition to take place, Councillor Victor Ferrández had asked for people to come forward with suitable walls that could be used as the ‘canvas’ for the graffiti. It is believed that the one refusal is because the wall offered did not meet health and safety requirements. The other applicants were all considered suitable and the graffiti artists will be able to go ahead and create their graffiti on these. However, there is a delay as not all the paperwork of all the applicants has been received. The town hall needs proof that the walls belong to those applying for this alternative decoration. The missing paperwork also means

that the official list of walls cannot be published yet. However, it is expected that this will happen in the next few days with the next step being that the artists present their projects. If the outstanding documents cannot be produced in time then these walls will no longer be included in the competition. The competition is planned for the week of April 23rd until April 28th and is aimed at finding the best street artist. The art work will be judged by a jury and prizes will be awarded. During this week there will also be four workshops provided by the University of Alicante which aim to illustrate the four aspects of urban culture: break dance, graffiti, DJ and hip-hop. ComarCON’s coming It has become a popular local event for all those interested in alternative games. The 7th annual ComarCON in Torrevieja will take place on 30th and 31st March. The event is located in the Palacio de los Deportes and more details were announced by the councillor for youth, Victor Ferrández. This year there will be more than 150 different activities open to the public between 10am until 9pm. There will be video game competitions, table top game tournaments as well as demonstrations, role play and many stalls with merchandise on sale. As has become traditional, there will be the opportunity to camp at the event on Saturday night, between the two days that it is open. ‘The three basic principles,’ explained Victor Ferrández, ‘are that entry is free, a large number of activities are on offer and that we are developing our links

with different associations.’ ComarCON Torrevieja has grown into one of the biggest free, alternative leisure events in Spain. Last year, in spite of the bad weather, more than 5,000 people attended, a number which they are hoping to surpass this year with predictions of 6,000 visitors. This year the timing of the event has changed. It was decided that it should take place in the spring to take advantage of what is usually better weather from the point of view of an indoor event of this kind. Last year it took place in September which can be notoriously hot. This year there will also be WiFi available throughout. Other changes include the allocation of a role play area following requests from last year. Suzanne O’Connell

had stolen a client’s purse in the market. The theft was thought to have been carried out by this well-known gang and a ‘light frisk’ of the women took place. The inspector wanted to carry out a more intensive search but the women refused and were taken to the police station where they were detained for about 40 minutes whilst the search took place. Nothing was found on the women and two other officers made the complaint believing that the actions taken against them were both irregular and unnecessary. The court found the inspector not guilty of the accusations. Candidates removed from PSOE list Five members of the list of PSOE candidates have been removed according to a decision made by the national PSOE party. The left of centre political party is suffering from some difficulties within its own ranks on the run up to the local council elections in May. Twenty-five people must be on the list of candidates who could possibly be elected if sufficient votes are received. Now five of these Joaquín Guillamó (number 11), Germán Soler (number 13); Joaquín Cos Córcoles (number 23), Ramón Pizana Sala (number 21) and Salvador Hernández (number 25) have been removed. PSOE claim that they will have no difficulties replacing them. Suzanne O’Connell

The Rojales Pantomime Group held their very own unique Oscars Award Ceremony at The Pines Restaurant in Benijofar, Costa Blanca to give out awards to the best of the cast and crew from the recent very successful pantomime, Camelot The Panto, which was enjoyed by audiences in January, and which raised lots of money for various local charities. All group members were invited to cast their votes as to who, in their opinion, merited an award in five different categories which resulted in the following winners receiving a miniature Oscar trophy, which we are sure they will treasure! Well done to you all…Best Actor – Michelle Martin, Best Supporting Actor – Sue Sellwood, Best Newcomer – Martyn Naylor, Best Production Crew – Jim Bell and Chairman’s Award – Derek Berry. The Producer, John Fagg and Director Thelma Judson, were both given awards for their patience and perseverance as they

steered the cast and crew through months of rehearsals to produce an amazing pantomime, and still managed to stay sane! A very special award was also presented to our newest and youngest member, Madison Murphy, aged 7, who played no less than three parts – a knight, a witch and Jake the Snake. Well done to Maddy - a possible star in the making? Over sixty people, including friends and family, enjoyed a fabulous three-course meal, followed by the awards ceremony with everyone ending up dancing the night away to a local group. If anyone is interested in joining our very merry group to either join the cast or the crew for our next pantomime, soon to be decided, email us at: rojalespantomime@gmail.com or check us out on www.rojalespantomime.com. Well done to all the cast and crew of The Rojales Pantomime Group - you are all winners!

Disappointment at list placing for Manzanares Councilllor Manzanares has been one of the PSOE councillors as part of the Torrevieja local government for the past four years following the election in 2015. Each party puts forward 25 names on the list. In reality only the top few are likely to have places in the government. The number of councillors awarded depends on the number of votes received. In spite of being elected last year as general secretary of the party, Manzanares has been relegated to seventh position from his previous place of third on the list. This effectively rules him out of a position in the government after the next local election as it is not expected that more than the first five will gain a place. The town council local elections will take place on 26th May and Councillor Manzanares’ placing has been changed by the national PSOE

party. The list was modified over the weekend and Manzanares’ previous position of third, changed to seventh. He wasn’t the only one to have his position changed with Domingo Pérez, Fabiana Ibarra and Estela Prieto also being relegated or removed. Other contenders from the PSOE include Councillor Fanny Serrano who will hold the position of fourth on the list. The PSOE lists across the country were approved by the Federal Committee of the PSOE on Sunday 17th March. Torrevieja’s list of PSOE candidates wasn’t the only one to be changed as it is believed that Pedro Sánchez wanted to maintain a tighter control over those positioned at the top of the local lists. Suzanne O’Connell

Online access to social services Torrevieja’s management of social services is to be improved through the use of new software. The Sistema de Información de usuarios de servicios sociales (SIUSS) is a web application that includes the data of social services users. The announcement about the new software was made by the Councillor for social welfare and equality, Fabiana Ibarra. According to the councillor, the system could have been operating before now as it was being constructed as early as 2008. Finally, it has got off the ground and is hoped to make a difference by allowing the collection of basic data required by social services in order to make an intervention. Data will be updated as often as four or five times a day, helping reduce mistakes from

computer errors. It is also expected that it will avoid different services asking for the same information from other areas and provinces. It is hoped that the new SIUSS programme will be operating shortly and training activities are being planned for the end of March. It is not a new programme but has been in the process of development since 1994 by the Department of Health, Social Services and Equality in collaboration with the autonomous communities. Systems such as this can help those on the front line of delivering social services to access quickly the information they need and to be able to update it. Suzanne O’Connell

The last, great building project for Torrevieja It has been described as a ‘macroplan’ and the last of the big housing developments in the town. La Hoya was approved in 2009 as an area of wasteland that could be built on. The area between the International Auditorium and San Luis/ El Chaparral is now moving to its next stage of building approval for 7,490 properties. The area to be built on includes over one million, eight hundred thousand square metres of land. It was first granted a licence in 2009 by the Valencian government but modifications have had to be made to accommodate new urban laws and the wish to protect the local environment. The area is close to the natural lakes of Torrevieja and La Mata and further amendments have had to be made to protect them. These have now been passed and published in the official provincial bulletin. It is now likely that the project will be debated during the election campaign in May. The building plans for this area are not only receiving attention for being the largest currently on offer in the Alicante region but also because this is the last land available for building in the town. Once this has been built on there only remains the opportunity to build upwards to increase the amount of properties available. Planning progress for the area has

been laborious. In 2018 the project was agreed by the Valencian Department for the protection of natural spaces but only with substantial amendments. It is these which have just been agreed locally and will now be on display to the public for 45 days. The area was previously farming land and you can still see the farm house, which will be preserved as part of the plan. Now, however, it is a vast area of waste land that has attracted illegal dumping and a number of snakes at different times in the past. The plans include a nursery, primary and secondary school. The initial intention was to build these close to the natural parks. It is suggested that this unusual decision was because these public sector buildings would have been on land more difficult to develop than other sections of the estate. Their location had to be changed and now schools’ construction will take place further towards the centre of the project. Part of the new plan includes a ‘buffer’ zone between the natural parks and the new housing estate. The idea is to move the residential building away from the parks and instead plant a green area between the lake and the first houses. The green area will contain native species of trees such as carob and olive, many of which are already found in the area. The developers have also had to

commit to a donation of €450,000 to help protect the natural park itself against any environmental fallout there might be during the course of the project. This may seem a significant amount of money, but not in comparison to the overall investment of more than 40 million euros. Along with this and the building of the schools the developer must also construct a percentage of public housing. A commodity in short supply in the town. Officially the developers have agreed to 20% being public housing. The area will not all be developed at once. The plan is to construct in phases and ultimately will provide accommodation for a potential 23,000 new residents. There will need to be some changes to the infrastructure too. A bridge is planned over the N332 and a pedestrian walkway over the CV-905. There will also be some commercial plots available. A German DIY store has applied to build next to the CV-905 and 95,000 square metres will be reserved for more commercial and hotel use. It will be the CV-905 which will become the main route in and out of the estate and plots of land next to the road are expected to be bought up for more commercial properties.

GBP / EUR UPDATE Last week, the pound was particularly volatile as Brexit dominated the headlines and the market. The UK inflation data showed an increase to 1.9%; despite this good news the Bank of England are expected to keep the interest rate unchanged amidst Brexit uncertainty. Earlier this week, there were similar fluctuations after Commons speaker ruled out a third vote on “substantially the same” bill on the Brexit deal. The pound fell briefly before the market considered the implications and the increased likelihood of the PM asking for an extension on the Brexit deadline and a request for postponement followed shortly. The PM had to wait while the 27 EU leaders discussed the idea and eventually agreed to an extension until

12th April, and a further extension to 22nd May if a clear plan of action could be found by this date. The pound made rapid gains on Friday morning after the news but all the same challenges remain for the government in getting the deal through. The euro was largely overshadowed by the Brexit drama, but there was some significant news this week. In January, the balance of trade in the euro zone widened to a seasonally-adjusted €17 billion. Of itself that was not remarkable but the zone's surplus with the United States and its deficit with China grew bigger, potentially increasing tension in both directions: Europe has already announced its wish to balance trade with China and the US.

Earthquake in Torrevieja An earthquake measuring 4 points on the Richter scale was felt in much of the province on Sunday afternoon. The epicentre was in the high seas off the coast of Torrevieja and the tremor lasted five seconds. The earthquake happened at 5.16pm and was ten kilometres deep, according to the National Geographic Institute. It was enough time to cause nervousness and concern among hundreds of people from across the region, who made

numerous calls to the various emergency services to warn that they had felt the tremor with considerable intensity, causing pieces of furniture to moves in their homes. This was noted in areas such as Alicante, Elche, Santa Pola, Almoradí, Torrevieja, Crevillent, El Campello, Guardamar del Segura, Mutxamel, Elda, Novelda, Petrer, San Miguel de las Salinas, San Vicente del Raspeig, Alcoy, Aspe, Benejúzar , Benidorm, Dénia and also in Cartagena and Murcia.

Plans for La Vuelta cycle race in Torrevieja La Vuelta is the Spanish equivalent of the tour de France and is expected to be watched by 400 million spectators. It is a very significant event on the annual sporting calendar and one that Torrevieja hopes to benefit from. The start of the first leg will take place from the bottom of one of Torrevieja’s salt mountains. The race is in its 74th year and will begin on 24th August. From the starting line in the Salinas de Torrevieja the contestants will travel around the town in a team trial over a distance of 18 kilometres and the event will be watched by people in 190 different countries. The plans for the event were being made on Thursday 21st March by the director of La Vuelta, Javier Guillén, the mayor of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón and Eduardo Dolón, the vice president of the provincial government. The event is expected to have an economic impact on the town of generating around three million euros. Three times what must be invested in it. Other events are planned to take place at the same time. They include a race for young people, ‘La Vuelta Junior’ in which students from across the town are expected to take part. Torrevieja’s International Auditorium will be the hub of La Vuelta with the journalists and other media representatives being based there. A Permanent Office and a work zone will be established in this ‘nerve centre’. The use of the Salinas as the starting block for the race is particularly exciting. However, it is not without its challenges. August is the

height of the holiday season in the town and it will require plenty of advance planning to ensure that the race is catered for adequately whilst also managing the huge influx of people that there is at this time. The race is an important event not just for Torrevieja but for the whole of Spain. The passage of the cyclists across the country means that many towns and cities have opportunity to feature on screens across the world. However, hosting the start of the race is a great honour and one which the politicians want to ensure goes well. La Vuelta Junior will begin with seven primary schools in the town holding theoretical and practical classes by cycling associations during April and May. These will focus on cycling, road safety and respecting the environment. These seven schools will then choose 100 children to participate in the last kilometre of the first stage of La Vuelta on the 24th August. This will be a real privilege that will help them feel like professional cyclists for a day. La Vuelta will stay in Alicante for a period of three days and it is hoped to capture many of the most beautiful scenery of the area, starting, of course, with Torrevieja’s own salt mountains. The meeting yesterday also represented one of the very few times when both the mayor and the vice president have been working towards a common goal. They were also joined yesterday by the councillor for tourism Fanny Serrano and the councillor for Sports Víctor Ferrández. Suzanne O’Connell

Seagate Wealth Management

Decade of rate misery S

avers who stashed their money with major banks have lost as much as a fifth of it in real terms over the past decade, and they have been hit extra hard because big banks pay much less interest than other providers. Money Mail research shows low interest rates and the rise in the cost of living since the 2008 financial crash have reduced the value of each £10,000 to £8,000. It is nearly a decade since rates plummeted to their then‐historic 0.5 per cent low, as the Bank of England grappled with the immediate fall‐out of the financial crisis. Savers see the spending power of their money fall if the interest they earn is less than the inflation rate. HSBC has paid 0.05 pc on its Flexible Saver over most of the past ten years, giving £60 interest on £10,000, assuming you added the interest to your account each year — a total of £10,060. But once inflation has taken its toll, the figure drops to £7,980 in today’s money — a drop of just over 20 per cent. If this story sounds familiar, then help is at hand. Here at Seagate, we have a range of flexible, cost effective savings schemes from some of the worlds’ leading product providers, such as Prudential and Old Mutual. The products offered by these companies allow you to achieve the growth you want, but just as importantly are fully tax compliant here in Spain. More and more people are looking for alternative ways to save, especially with banks offering such low interest rates. Seagate can tailor make the savings solution that works best for you and the lifestyle you deserve.

Create a gallery wall

They were a symbol of the 1980s and a cheap and cheerful way of hanging posters, photographs and other artwork while avoiding the indelible horrors of Blu Tack. But after more than 30 years, the classic clip-frame is falling out of favour, as the booming trend for so-called “gallery walls” means consumers are seeking a wider and more imaginative range of framing options. Shoppers seeking to liberate their digital photographs and Instagram images to curate and create a style statement on their walls are choosing a more mixand-match look. As well as photos, art and postcards, this includes pretty plates, funky mirrors and even customised empty frames. People are mixing posters, postcards and prints with photography to create gallery walls. But they’re not using clipframes, which were loved in the

80s but have now fallen so far out of fashion that we will stop selling them. Despite us all collecting huge archives of digital images, we’re seeing a return to a love of printed photographs. Inspired by images on Instagram and Pinterest many are adopting the US trend for gallery walls. Gallery walls are being squeezed into small rooms, not only living rooms but also dining rooms, bedrooms and hallways. At Habitat, year-on-year sales of its best-selling Ontario frames – a mixture of sizes – have risen by 60 percent as people embrace the collage trend. “The popularity of gallery walls – promoted mainly through Instagram culture – and the ease with which they can be created at home on a small budget, has led to many customers wanting to experiment with how they display artwork at home,

demanding more interesting frame shapes and materials to play with,” said Abi Thurgood, assistant buyer for home accessories at Habitat. “We have developed new ‘gallery wall packs’ that give customers a curated selection of different frame sizes from which they can easily create their own.” Ikea, meanwhile, has seen a rise in sales of its picture ledges – which can be used alongside photo frames to display belongings as well as pictures, while it also offers a template to help those who are not so nifty with a tape measure. However, Kate Watson-Smyth, author of the Mad About The House style blog, said: “Gallery walls are a great way to bring personality into a space, and look wonderful going up stairs, but beware of creating them in a small room as they can make it look smaller and messy.”

Mother and son doing well at EHCRC O’Grove

Following the recent story of the tiny little pony mum and her son, a mule, not even a year old, the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre is delighted to say that both equines have had positive results from the tests, scans and x-rays done so far. Sue Weeding-Co-Founder-said: “It’s not often we get good results on tests

which he is sure he was having trimmed for the first time. And he is looking absolutely super too. They suspect it is the first time mum has had her feet trimmed and if mum and baby had remained with their previous owner, this little mule would have ended up in the same appalling state as his mum.

on abandoned or abused animals but mum has been x-rayed and although the x-rays show some movement in the pedal bones in the hooves, it’s nothing that will cause permanent damage and better still she has no internal infections so the long term prognosis for her is exceptionally good.” Then with the collaboration of Enrique the farrier, and vet Dorothea, they went on to trim the overgrown hooves which had to be cut by starting with a saw and then with Dorothea’s instruction Enrique was able to shape the feet to ensure the right angle and as you can see from the photos she is looking so much better. She will be on pain killers for some time to keep her comfortable until she gets used to the new position of her hooves and for her tendons to adapt. Dorothea then performed the long awaited ultrasound to see if she was in foal and yet again good news she is not in foal, which is one less problem to deal with. Enrique then tackled her son’s feet

Sue, beaming, said: “Both are doing marvelously well, they are free of infestation, they have been wormed, their feet are being sorted, they are gaining weight and settling down beautifully. We gave them some freedom today for the first time and they loved it. Baby was prancing around like a spring lamb! What more could we ask for, they are coming along a treat, we are so happy.” EHCRC would like to thank everyone out there who has been following the story and also those who have been donating. They now need to think of suitable names for this adorable little family. The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre, located just outside Rojales at Partido Lo Garriga, 59, opens to the public on the first Sunday of every month between 1pm and 4pm. Free horse tours run throughout the afternoon and refreshments are available from Charity’s tea room. For more details and directions, please visit www.easyhorsecare.net

Aragón firm invents ‘smart’ inner soles to correct foot problems ’Smart’ inner soles for shoes that correct the foot position and prevent serious limb problems have been invented by a company in Aragón, and are likely to be on the market within less than six months. Podoactiva, a firm that specialises in podiatry and digital engineering, says this pioneering invention generates ‘big data’ about how the foot ‘behaves’ in ‘thousands of patients in real life’, through the way they move and the pressure of their step, and the relationship between these aspects and a long list of injuries affecting the feet, legs, hips and back. According to Zaragoza University’s engineering professor Roberto Casas, who was a member of the design and development team, the ‘Smart Insole Podoactiva’ is capable of measuring ‘500 datum per second in real time’ whilst the wearer goes about his or her daily life, thanks to the Force Sensor Resistor (FSR) implants, an electronic motherboard, a battery with an IMU module, and Bluetooth technology which allows the information gathered to be sent to a mobile phone. They are recommended for literally anyone who wears shoes – not just sportspeople or those with existing foot conditions, says head of engineering at Podoactiva, Ángel Peguero, who calls them a ‘real

challenge’ in his profession. “Knowing what is going on with a patient’s foot in between podiatrist visits is a real revolution in the field of biomechanics, since it allows us to learn about how our patients walk and step in a real-life environment,” said technical director of Podoactiva, Javier Alfaro, during a conference at the Global Sports Innovation Centre at Madrid’s Microsoft headquarters. Olympic walker Jesús Ángel García Bragado, who took part in his seventh games in 2016, says inventions of this type ‘open a new world of possibilities’. “Knowing how your foot is behaving whilst you’re training, whilst you’re recovering and whilst you’re at home or out in the street opens a new world of possibilities,” were García Bragado’s exact words and, as an ambassador for the brand, he says he has had ‘great confidence’ in Podoactiva ‘for years’, because of their skills in spearheading ‘progress like this’. Smart Insole Podoactiva will be on the shelves before the end of summer and are available to mainstream retail customers, not just specialists. Its price has not been confirmed, but it is likely to be set at an affordable level for the average buyer.

Habana

Havana is the capital city, largest city, province, major port, and leading commercial centre of Cuba making it the largest city by area, the most populous city, and the third largest metropolitan area in the Caribbean region. The city extends mostly westward and southward from the bay, which is entered through a narrow inlet and which divides into three main harbours: Marimelena, Guanabacoa and Atarés. The sluggish Almendares River traverses the city from south to north, entering the Straits of Florida a few miles west of the bay. The city of Havana was founded by the Spanish in the 16th century and due to its strategic location it served as a springboard for the Spanish conquest of the continent, becoming a stopping point for treasure-laden Spanish galleons returning to Spain. Contemporary Havana can essentially be described as three cities in one: Old Havana, Vedado and the newer suburban districts. • Plaza Vieja: a plaza in Old Havana, it was the site of processions, bullfights, and fiestas. • Fortress San Carlos de la Cabaña: a fortress located on the east side of the Havana bay, La Cabaña is the most impressive fortress from colonial times, particularly its walls constructed at the end of the 18th century. • El Capitolio Nacional: built in 1929 as the Senate and House of Representatives, the colossal building is recognizable by its dome which dominates the city's skyline. Inside stands the third largest indoor statue in the world, La Estatua de la República. Nowadays, the Cuban Academy of Sciences headquarters and the Museo Nacional de Historia Natural (the National Museum of Natural History) has its venue within the building and contains the largest natural history collection in the country. • El Morro Castle: is a fortress guarding the entrance to Havana bay; Morro Castle was built because of the threat to the harbor from pirates. • Fortress San Salvador de la Punta: a small fortress built in the 16th century, at the western entry point to the Havana harbour, it played a crucial role in the defence of Havana during the initial centuries of colonisation. It houses some twenty old guns and military antiques. • The Malecon/Sea wall: is the avenue that runs along the north coast of the city, beside the seawall. The Malecón is the most popular avenue of Havana, it is known for its sunsets. • Hotel Nacional de Cuba: an Art Deco National Hotel famous in the 1950s as a gambling and entertainment complex. • Museo de la Revolución: located in the former

Presidential Palace, with the yacht Granma on display behind the museum.

Culture

Havana, by far the leading cultural centre of the country, offers a wide variety of features that range from museums, palaces, public squares, avenues, churches, fortresses (including the largest fortified complex in the Americas dating from the 16th through 18th centuries), ballet and from art and musical festivals to exhibitions of technology. The restoration of Old Havana offered a number of new attractions, including a museum to house relics of the Cuban revolution. The government placed special emphasis on cultural activities, many of which are free or involve only a minimal charge.

Old Havana

Old Havana, (La Habana Vieja in Spanish), contains the core of the original city of Havana, with more than 2,000 hectares it exhibits almost all the Western architectural styles seen in the New World. La Habana Vieja was founded by the Spanish in 1519 in the natural harbor of the Bay of Havana. It became a stopping point for the treasure laden Spanish Galleons on the crossing between the New World and the Old World. In the 17th century it was one of the main shipbuilding centers. The city was built in baroque and neoclassic style.

Tourism

The city has long been a popular attraction for tourists. Between 1915 and 1930, Havana hosted more tourists than any other location in the Caribbean. The influx was due in large part to Cuba's proximity to the United States, where restrictive prohibition on alcohol and other pastimes stood in stark contrast to the island's traditionally relaxed attitude to leisure pursuits. A pamphlet published by E.C. Kropp Co., Milwaukee, WI, between 1921 and 1939 promoting tourism in Havana, Cuba, can be found in the University of Houston Digital Library, Havana, Cuba, The Summer Land of the World, Digital Collection. The traditional sugar industry, upon which the island's economy has been based for three centuries, is centred elsewhere on the island and controls some three-fourths of the export economy. But light manufacturing facilities, meat-packing plants, and chemical and pharmaceutical operations are concentrated in Havana. Other foodprocessing industries are also important, along with shipbuilding, vehicle manufacturing, production of alcoholic beverages (particularly rum), textiles, and tobacco products, particularly the world-famous Habanos cigars.

Centre of attention

He won’t leave me alone

My brother and his wife have always demanded attention. At my mother‘s birthday party, she grumbled that my mother was ‘sitting there like the Queen Bee’, then got up on the table and started dancing and stripping. She’s rarely sober. At my sister’s birthday, she stripped down to her underwear and donned a grass skirt. And my brother thinks he is, ’he who should be obeyed’. They both get annoyed if the proverbial ‘red carpet’ isn’t rolled out for them.

My ex finished with me because he wanted to see other girls, however he still contacts me when he is bored or at a loose end. He can be all lovey dovey at these times and I have hope for a reconciliation, but then if I contact him, he hasn’t got any time for me and ignores my messages or phone calls. I can easily follow his movements on Instagram, so I know when he is seeing other girls.

What a pair of narcissists! From your longer letter it is clear that your brother’s behaviour has been left unchecked for what seems to be all of his life. This can be the fault of neglectful parenting. It was up to your parents to stamp out his superior and obnoxious behaviour. It’s not uncommon for a narcissist to choose another narcissist for their partner, as a sort of ‘getting attention by proxy’. Sadly, there is nothing that can be done here except remove yourself from their audience, and if there are times when you are thrown together, just walk away. Narcissists hate to be ignored.

It sounds as though you are being kept on the end of a string, being picked up and put down again like an old toy. I can’t see his behaviour changing, can you? And it will do you no good to keep in touch with him. What‘s in it for you exactly? I am going to suggest you block his telephone number from your phone, and also try not to go to the same places. Stop following his movements on Instagram. You must remember that this boy finished with you, so you are no longer an item.

Spanish PM asks UK for a I Get a Kick Out Of You clear Brexit plan Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has asked the United Kingdom to stop “going around in circles,” and to clarify whether and why it wants to delay its exit from the European Union. “We know what they don’t want, but not what they want,” said Sánchez at a talk about the future of Europe at Madrid’s Ateneo centre, where he took a break from the national issues monopolizing the political agenda ahead of the snap general election of 28th April. The Socialist Party (PSOE) leader has cancelled many of his international engagements to focus on the campaign race. Spain will also be holding local, regional and European elections on 26th May. In his nine months in power, Sánchez has

emerged as Spain’s most internationally oriented leader, and he has set a record for travel by a Spanish head of government. Sánchez will not be missing out on his global appointments. There is an important European Council summit in Brussels where Brexit will be discussed, although at this point the Spanish government is unclear about the position that British PM Theresa May will bring to the table. There is a chance that she will ask for an extension to the March 30 deadline to withdraw from the EU, but Sánchez and other European leaders are worried about the absence of a clearly defined strategy. Speaking at the Ateneo, a historical building in Madrid that was once a hub of political culture, particularly during the Second Republic in the 1930s, Sánchez delivered a speech against Brexit, populism and politicians who play with feelings. He said that there is only one way left to fight “the enemies of Europe, those who want to destroy it,” and that is to go back to the social origins of the European Union. “A social Europe is the force that will re-legitimise the European project from the bottom up.”

Regarding Brexit, he described the referendum as “a completely erroneous mechanism to solve complex dilemmas,” and said that what was being asked of voters was “an emotional yes; a feeling, rather than a vote. Now the British are finding out that, by voting themselves out, they voted for less wealth, more seclusion, less influence and a greater loss of real and tangible benefits.”

The cost to Spain A disorderly no-deal Brexit could cost the Spanish economy more than €9 billion over the course of the next five years, or 0.82 percent of GDP, according to Bank of Spain calculations based on the Bank of England’s own 2018 projections. An orderly nodeal withdrawal would bring the cost down to approximately €6 billion, or 0.5 percent of GDP. This second scenario supposes that contingency plans will work and that both sides will strive to keep problems down to a minimum. On the other hand, a Brexit that came with a deal would have a very small impact on the Spanish economy, in the range of €200 million or 0.02 percent of GDP, since a stronger pound would compensate many of the losses, according to a Bank of Spain report.

The box office is open for STUDIO32 Musical Theatre Company’s latest spectacular, the wonderful Cole Porter classic Anything Goes. The show is an hilarious farce, with great songs and a script that will have you laughing in your seats, up the aisles, and all the way home. Over the years the show has won many awards, including Tony awards for Best Musical Revival for both the 1987 and 2011 Broadway productions. Set in the 1930s the story concerns madcap antics aboard an ocean liner, the S.S. American, bound from New York to London. Reno Sweeney, a nightclub singer turned evangelist, gets embroiled in the love affair between an oldtime friend, Billy Crocker, and debutante Hope Harcourt. Hope just happens to be on the liner as she is engaged to Lord Evelyn Oakleigh and planning to marry onboard. But will Reno save the day and enable Billy and Hope to find true love together? Lynn Preston plays the lead role of Reno Sweeney, a brash American cabaret artist. Lynn has been with STUDIO32 for nearly two years now and recently played the role of Adderperle in the Motown musical The Wiz. The role is quite demanding, with singing, dancing and acting required throughout the show. This

Lynn Preston as Reno Sweeney includes several well-known numbers such as “I Get A Kick Out Of You” and the title song “Anything Goes”. It was famously played by Elaine Paige in the 1989 London production for which she was nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award as Best Actress In A Musical. STUDIO32 is proud and delighted to once again be supporting charities and good causes in the area, including the San Fulgencio Alzheimer’s Society and the local music school. The show goes on from Wednesday 29th May to

Saturday 1st June at the Cardenal Belluga Theatre in San Fulgencio, all performances start at 7.30pm with doors open 7pm. Reserved seating tickets are now on sale, priced at 10 euros, and can be obtained by emailing tickets@studiothirtytwo.org or calling 744 48 49 33. Renting before you buy? Not a good idea

I

f you’re currently on the lookout for your first or next home in Spain, but contemplating whether to rent first, before you buy. Consider these 4 points about renting: 1. First and foremost, you’re throwing money away! If you’re going to buy in the end, don’t waste your hard earned money by renting. You’re lining someone else’s pockets instead of growing your own investment. If you rent somewhere during the interim period of reserving a property until completion, then at least you should only be out of pocket for a couple of months at the most. But don’t rent for months on end, whilst you look for a home that may never exist, because your expectations are too high for your budget. The money you save on rent, can increase your purchasing limit, to help you find as close to your dream home as possible. 2. You’ll find it harder to settle. If you’re relocating, from outside of Spain especially, you’re going to find it hard to make a rental your home. I’ve seen many a time where the one half of a couple (usually the man), can settle quickly, but the woman needs somewhere she can call home. Somewhere where she can put her own stamp on the

property. Decide on her own colour schemes. A place where she is proud to invite her family and friends to stay. This is not easy to accomplish in a rental property, and soon she will get itchy feet because she can’t settle, and want to move back. This is a very costly experience. 3. You can’t change anything. No alternations! No upgrades! No nothing! If you’re renting you’re not allowed to change anything. You have to be satisfied with what you get. Short term, no problem, but if you’re in for the long haul, you’ll want to start changing things, like updating kitchens and bathrooms. This is a loss expense, if the property is not yours!

4. No security. I don’t mean money or safety. I mean no long term security, thinking that you can stay there for as long as you wish. You could get evicted at any time, even if you have a contract. Again, I’ve seen homeowners financial circumstances change, and they have no choice but to evict the tenants, and put the property on the market for sale. This is a very upsetting and unsettling time for the tenant. Think you’ll be saving money by renting? Think again. It can turn out to be a costly experience. If you’re on hunt to buy your home in Spain, head to www.QuesadaDeals.com for a list of the best area deals! See our advert in the centre pages of this newspaper!

RBL visits a Moorish Spanish economy set to keep growing despite global teahouse uncertainty The Bank of Spain on Wednesday issued its projections for the Spanish economy to 2021, and warned that any government that comes out of the 28th April election should prepare the public accounts for a potential downturn. Despite a global slowdown, particularly in the euro zone, the Spanish economy remains “notably dynamic,” said the supervisor in its quarterly report. While exports have lost steam, domestic demand has compensated this effect thanks to job creation, low inflation, a lower household savings ratio and higher pensions. In its report, the central bank anticipates continued GDP growth but underscores that there is “a high degree of uncertainty regarding the future orientation of economic policy” in Spain, and notes that adverse global events such as persisting uncertainty over Brexit or the potential adoption of protectionist measures could also affect the GDP growth forecast. Spanish GDP is projected to grow at a gradually slower rate of 2.2 percent this year, 1.9% in 2020 and 1.7 percent in 2021. The supervisor also predicts small reductions of the public deficit, which is expected to drop from 2.7 percent to 2.5 percent of GDP this year. This is partly due to lower inflation, and partly to the so-called

“Social Fridays,” alluding to the social measures that the Pedro Sánchez government has been approving by decree at the Friday Cabinet meetings. Sánchez, of the Socialist Party (PSOE), heads a minority government and he was forced to call a snap election after failing to secure parliamentary support for his 2019 budget plan. “Taken individually, the measures do

not entail large amounts [of money],” said Óscar Arce, head of the Bank of Spain’s studies department, at the presentation on Wednesday. But together, they make a dent in the public accounts. Taking inflation into account, and despite higher tax revenues, this dent represents around €1.2 billion. “We don’t have a strategy on the table for public account consolidation that could help reduce this vulnerability,” said Arce. In this context, fiscal policy would adopt a “clearly expansionary and procyclical” approach, he added. This will make 2019 “a fallow year” for budget reduction, “which leaves us a little bit unsatisfied.” As for the minimum wage hike announced by Sánchez in October, the Bank of Spain feels that it is too early to see an impact, but that figures from the first two months do not contradict the supervisor’s theory that 125,000 jobs will be lost. Arce said that salary improvements should ensure that competitiveness is preserved, especially in a scenario of increased risks to the economy. Employment growth is projected to slow down, although job creation will reduce the unemployment rate to 12 percent by the end of 2021, down from around 14%.

A band of intrepid members of the Gran Alacant and La Marina branch of the RBL in Spain, recently visited the Carmen del Campillo Arabian Teahouse. Seemingly in the middle of nowhere, but very close to the main road from Crevillente to Albertera, this tranquil oasis is like nothing we had ever seen before; a haven of tranquillity and shade. Inside the decorative gates, there are exotic gardens illuminated by Arabian lanterns to illuminate the large winding labyrinth of furnished rooms, some with roaring log fires and all with their own character and decor. There are peacocks roaming the grounds, piped Arabian music and a tepee on one of the terraces of the tea house. The gardens are woven intricately

throughout the house, with trees even poking out through the roof. The group rested its legs in the courtyard, with wonderfully coloured shrubs, vines, and ferns dangling all around and enjoyed various teas and fruit smoothies, accompanied by nutty pastries dripping with honey. The Gran Alacant & La Marina branch of the Royal British Legion, meets on the first Monday of each month at 6pm in Lounge D, Plaza Mayor, Gran Alacant. New members are always made most welcome, and remember you do NOT have to be exservices to join us. For more details please contact granalacant.secretary@rbl.community . New BFF for Kylie Jenner Kylie Jenner is moving on from Jordyn Woods and has named her new BFF to prove that their friendship is truly over. The billionaire make-up mogul gushed about her 'bestie' Tiffany Sorya on her Instagram stories, showing that Jordyn is

29

CostaBlancaPeople 26th March - 1st April 2019

but a distant memory. Ever since the cheating scandal, where Jordyn was accused of having a fling with Khloe Kardashian's baby daddy Tristan Thompson, things have been sour between the two. Kylie is still not speaking to Jordyn and it looks like the mum to Stormi is hoping to focus on supporting the close circle of girlfriends she already has, including entrepreneur Tiff. Kylie had written on the video clip: "Go listen to my bestie @tiffanysorya on The Startup Story Podcast." Tiff then reposted the story from Kylie on her own Instagram adding: "My friends are the BEST." The LA-based private tutor has been besties with the Keeping Up With the Kardashian star since she tutored Kylie and her sister Kendall. She founded the Novel Education Group which she hopes will help 'make smart stylish again'. Tiff is well in the Kardashian-Jenner fold and has been spotted with Kylie on multiple occasions, including partying

with her and Jordyn as Christina Aguilera's birthday bash back in 2016. Despite her exile from the klan, Jordyn is reportedly 'still hopeful of forgiveness' from Khloe and the rest of the family. Jordyn offered an olive branch to her former bestie following her Red Table Talk interview when she liked Kylie's Instagram picture, which showed the reality star reclining on her carpet clutching a red love heart handbag. In the shot, Kylie dreamily gazes off to one side as she poses in skin-tight red PVC leggings and a tiny white crop top, her brunette locks tumbling around her shoulders in loose waves. A source also told Hollywood Life that despite the huge backlash against her, Jordyn is still "clinging to the hope that Khloe will forgive her," as she can’t imagine "being shut out forever." Jordyn has known Khloe for a number of years and is hopeful that her "big heart" will be able to show "forgiveness" and Jordyn apparently "isn’t going to stop trying until she does."

Morgan has a bee in his bonnet Many Hollywood movie stars often like to have a hobby to escape to when they're not acting, and for Morgan Freeman that's his bees. The 81-year-old first began his foray into beekeeping back in 2014 and has since converted his 124acre ranch into a giant bee sanctuary. Keen to make a concerted effort to save honeybees, which have been dwindling at an alarming rate over the past 50 years, Morgan imported the hives from Arkansas to his Mississippi property. The actor explained how he even went without a bee suit to feed the insects a diet of sugar and water and had never been stung. Speaking in an interview on The Late Show with Jimmy Fallon just a couple of weeks after beginning his new hobby, the legendary star explained how he wanted to make a difference and help save the environment. "There is a concerted effort for

bringing bees back onto the planet," the actor said during the chat show back in 2014. "We do not realise that they are the foundation, I think, of the growth of the planet, the vegetation…I have a lot of flowering things, and I have a gardener too. As she takes care of the bees too, all she does is figure out, ‘OK, what would they like to have?’, so we have got acres and acres of clover, and we have some planting stuff like lavender, I have got like, maybe 140 magnolia trees, big blossoms." He imported 26 bee hives from Arkansas and said he only intends to feed the bees and doesn't want to harvest them for honey. Freeman isn't the only famous beekeeper in Hollywood as it was reported Scarlett Johansson took up the hobby after her co-star Samuel L. Jackson gave her a beehive as a wedding present. It's thought she used the honey harvested from the bees, who she coparented with her then husband Ryan Reynolds, in her skincare regime.

Worthington appears even more uncomfortable in this grittier-looking episode, so it’s up to Bill Nighy to bring some fun to the proceedings as the northern-accented fallen god Hephaestus. But despite some edge-of-the seat excitement - vertiginous falls through fire and Stygian gloom; battles with two-headed, fire-breathing demons this adventure is strictly off the Hollywood assembly line, with all the expected bells and whistles having a tediously hollow ring. At least fans of the 1981 Clash of the Titans will be delighted by the appearance of mechanical owl Bubo.

This routine sequel to the 2010 Clash of the Titans is more about looking epic than telling an interesting story, as director Jonathan Liebesman (Battle Los Angeles) merely piles on the empty spectacle and one-note action. The Cyclops, the Minotaur and the prison abyss of Tartarus are among the Greek myths plundered this time around, as Perseus (Sam Worthington) races to the Underworld to save his father, Zeus (Liam Neeson), from the mighty monster Kronos.

Sunday 31st March Film 4 - 7.45pm

Mothers Day The third part of a star-studded series with Valentine’s Day (2010) and New Year’s Eve (2011), this comedy follows several overwrought mothers (including Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson and Julia Roberts) as they negotiate family traumas leading up to Mother’s Day. Like the previous instalments, this is a drab mix of every romantic comedy convention that is neither realistic nor engaging.

The movie relies almost solely on the appeal of its stars, with single parent Aniston and widower Jason Sudeikis being the most empathetic of the star-studded cast, but they all fall foul of a clumsy script that avoids the true hardships of motherhood in favour of picket-fenced relationship fantasies. Worse still, the story brings us baffling creations such as Margot Martindale’s casually racist grandparent, and Roberts’ icy home-shopping guru. In the end, this unbearably sentimental film offers a rare chance to see several romantic comedy queens share the screen, but very little else.

BRITAIN’S GOT TALENT 2019 Britain’s Got Talent returns for its 13th series later in 2019, promising to be jam-packed with more talented (and notso-talented) folk in the UK. The multiple award-winning series, which has brought international fame to hopefuls such as Diversity, Susan Boyle and Tokio Myers, is a sure-fire spring ratings smash for ITV, with last series’ final scoring over 10 million viewers. The 13th series is also hotly-tipped to

see host Anthony McPartlin return to our screens full-time alongside co-presenter Declan Donnelly, after taking 2018 off following a stint in rehab for alcohol issues. Although there isn’t a confirmed start date for Britain’s Got Talent, previous series have always begun in the first few weeks of April. So a launch date of Saturday 13th April 2019 seems pretty likely. After stepping back from his television

hosting duties in April after he was convicted of drink-driving, Ant is returning to host Britain’s Got Talent. He’ll once again join Dec for the show’s live auditions, which are filmed in January 2019. Although Ant McPartlin was seen throughout all of the pre-recorded BGT auditions in last year’s show, he was absent for the entire live week of shows. It meant that co-presenter Declan Donnelly hosted the live semi-finals and the grand

final by himself. For the seventh year running, Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon and David Walliams were sifting through

the acts in the 2018 series. But will they be back for the eighth year in a row? As yet, the judging line-up hasn’t been confirmed. But the foursome work so well together, it’d be a bit of a shock if there were to be any changes on the panel. This is a sentiment echoed by Britain’s Got More Talent host Stephen Mulhern, who predicts the line-up will remain the same for several years to come. However, David Walliams has hinted the next run of the show may very well be his last, as his contract is due to run out this year.

Valencia researchers discover ‘sudden death’ heart failure gene

R

esearchers at Valencia’s La Fe Hospital have discovered the gene behind the most common hereditary heart condition – one which causes ‘sudden death’ and often affects children and teenagers as they are playing sports. After sequencing the DNA of 7,000 individuals and selecting a number of families with a history of hypertrophic myocardiopathy via 40 different hospitals, and tracking them over a threeyear period, the Institute of Health Research (IIS) at La Fe pinpointed a link between the gene FH0D3 and the condition. Published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC), the report details how patients with a family history of hypertrophic myocardiopathy were able to benefit from more accurate diagnoses allowing them to manage and monitor their conditions. The discovery of the link between the disorder and gene FH0D3 also opens the door to potential new treatments which could suppress the action of the gene in question. Hypertrophic myocardiopathy is the most frequent inherited heart condition, affecting one in 500 people, and is associated with a greater risk of ‘sudden death’ and chronic heart failure, as well as a reduction in quality of life for patients because of the symptoms it generates, says the Family Cardiopathies Research Group (CaFaMuSMe) of the IIS. It occurs when mutations – or changes

in DNA levels – in the genes responsible for developing heart muscle are present, meaning the heart becomes enlarged, a condition known as left ventricular hypertrophy. The genetic cause of this has never, until now, been discovered in more than half of those affected. Before the research at La Fe was completed, the causal link between gene FH0D3 and the development of hypertrophic myocardiopathy had never been proven, but the study reveals it is a factor in a significant percentage of cases, explains professor Valentín Fuster, editor of the JACC. The research started out by focusing on a large extended family in the Region of Murcia, whose case gave rise to the initial hypothesis of a causal link between the condition and gene FH0D3. Another family who had already joined the study some time earlier, following a detailed post-mortem of one of its members who had suffered from ‘sudden death’, came under focus. Initially, the autopsy failed to find a genetic link, but ongoing research by a team of cardiologists, geneticists, pathologists, molecular biologists, technicians and admin staff, all led by Dr Esther Zorio, over more than three years led to this view changing. Now, anyone with a family history can undergo genetic screening to see whether they are at risk before clinical symptoms of the condition start to emerge.

Spanish police bust Europe’s largest illegal TV streaming service

Spanish police have arrested five members of a criminal organisation accused of illegally selling access to payTV over the internet. Police believe the raid against the international organisation, which is based in Spain and has branches in Denmark, the United Kingdom, Latvia, the Netherlands and Cyprus, is the largest European operation against an illegal TV streaming business. Three of the members arrested lived in luxury housing developments in Spain’s southern region of Costa del Sol and owned several high-range cars. The profits of the illegal operation allowed members to live the high life – police estimate the group made €8 million since 2013. Thousands of people from 30 different countries paid between €40 and €460 a month to watch their favourite soccer games, TV shows and movies. What they did not know was that they were doing so via a pirate operator. Police were alerted to the organisation in 2015 after Premier League, England’s first division soccer league, filed a complaint stating that a web-based

service in Málaga was offering Internet Protocol television (IPTV) subscriptions – a service that distributes pay-TV online – without authorisation. When police began to investigate, they quickly became aware of the scale of the operation: users of the website had access to more than 800 international television channels, a catalogue of protected audiovisual work, and a wide range of radio stations from across the world. The organisation had a score of web pages offering the same services. To access the content, subscribers paid between €40 and €460 a month depending on the package chosen, their country of origin and the number of the months they had signed up for. The monthly fees were made to a company in Gibraltar. To maintain the appearance of legality, the organisation created telecommunication, internet and hardware companies. They became authorised fibre optic operators, which made clients trust that they also had the license to distribute foreign channels. By mixing the incomes from both

activities, the organisation managed to avoid police detection. While the main operations were based in Spain, they had business partners in Denmark who provided them with technical support and access to even more channels. The Spanish police led a joint investigation with Denmark and the United Kingdom in which 14 other branches were found: eight in Spain (in Málaga, Madrid and Alicante), four in Denmark and two in the United Kingdom. As a result of the investigation, 66 servers were disconnected and the rest, which were part of a network of internationally connected computers, were detected and identified. The five people arrested have had their bank accounts frozen and have been accused of several crimes including breaking intellectual property law, belonging to a criminal organization and money laundering. The three arrested in Spain have already faced trial and are currently in prison. Another 10 people have given statements as witnesses.

Spain to exhume Franco’s remains in June Spain has announced that it will move the remains of late dictator Francisco Franco from an opulent mausoleum to a staterun pantheon, after months of wrangling between the government and his family. The move, which will take place in June, has long been talked about by sympathisers of the left-leaning government but fiercely resisted by Franco’s heirs and many on the right. It has revived tensions dating back to Spain’s civil war in the 1930s and the subsequent four decades of Franco’s rule. “The reburial of Franco’s remains will take place on the morning of 10th June,” Deputy Prime Minister Carmen Calvo said. She said the body would be exhumed then taken to the MingorrubioEl Pardo state pantheon in a cemetery north of Madrid, where Franco’s wife is buried, with his remains reburied on the same day. Franco’s tomb currently lies in a huge hillside mausoleum belonging to the Catholic Church in the Valley of the

Fallen, west of Madrid. The imposing basilica has drawn the attention of both tourists and rightwing sympathisers who have rallied there for demonstrations. Carved into a mountainside and topped by a vast 150-metre (490-feet) cross, the mausoleum is a deeply-divisive symbol of a past that Spain still finds difficult to digest. It was built by Franco’s regime between 1940 and 1959, using forced labour by political prisoners. The site also houses the remains of some 37,000 victims from both sides of the civil war, which was triggered by Franco’s rebellion against an elected Republican government. Spain’s previous government led by the conservative Popular Party had resisted efforts to exhume him but Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez revived the plans after taking office last year. In September, Spanish lawmakers approved a decree authorising the exhumation of Franco’s remains.

The government has also gained the Vatican’s approval for finding an alternative burial spot. Sanchez’s government rejected a proposal by Franco’s family to relocate him to Madrid’s main cathedral, fearing it would become a place of pilgrimage for sympathisers. The National Francisco Franco Foundation, which defends the memory of the dictator, has said it will appeal against the exhumation at the Supreme Court. “When you attack Franco, you attack my family, over half of Spain, the monarchy and the Church which protected him,” Franco’s great-grandson Luis Alfonso de Borbon told conservative daily La Razon in October. The announcement comes just six weeks before Spain holds snap elections on 28th April. Sanchez is trying to prevent the Popular Party from returning to power with the support of newly-emerged farright party Vox.

Russian buyout of Spain supermarket chain Dia favoured

Shareholders in struggling Spanish supermarket chain Dia have rejected a capital increase proposed by the company’s management, paving the way for a takeover bid by an investment fund owned by Russian tycoon Mikhail Fridman. Dia’s board had proposed the 600 million euro capital increase as part of a restructuring plan, but shareholders meeting in Madrid instead approved a 500 million euro capital increase put forward by Fridman’s LetterOne investment vehicle. Luxembourg-based LetterOne, the discount supermarket chain’s biggest shareholder with a 29 per cent stake, had vowed to drop an offer announced last month to buy all of Dia’s remaining shares if

its proposed capital hike was not approved by shareholders. LetterOne is offering 0.67 euro per Dia share. The company’s shares have shed nearly 90 per cent of their value since the beginning of 2018. Dia, which is present in Brazil, Argentina and Portugal in addition to Spain, posted a net loss of 353 million euros in 2018. It blamed the poor results on a reduction in margins in Spain, where it was forced to reduce prices in the face of stiff competition, and hyperinflation in Argentina where it has 16 per cent of its stores. Dia’s chief executive Borja de la Cierva ac-knowledged at the meeting that the company had since 2016 made mistakes such as offering “excessive discounts” and had often run out of stock, which caused the company to lose market share to its main rivals, Germany’s Lidl and Spain’s Mercadona. The group, which last year dropped out of Spain’s Ibex35 index of most traded shares, has debts of around 1.45 billion euros. A LetterOne representative at the shareholders meeting, Stephan Ducharme, promised a “full rescue plan” for the company.

The two parties oppose Sanchez’s bid to try to rehabilitate the memory of leftwing victims of the civil war and Franco’s rule. Last month, Sanchez visited France to pay tribute to the 450,000 Spaniards who

sought refuge there at the end of the 1936-39 civil war and during the dictatorship. He has vowed to defend the values of “tolerance and reject extremism” in times of rising populism.

Wine mistakes to avoid ... Serving wine at the wrong temperature Serve your white wine, chilled, and your red wine, room temperature, right? Not exactly. That could work if you lived in a drafty European castle with a massive and perennially cool wine cellar. But for most people who live in regular houses or apartments sans wine cellars, red and white wines are usually stored in the fridge or the kitchen cabinet. That’s fine, you can actually get your wine to the right serving temperature with a little help from your fridge or ice bucket. Ideally, full-bodied reds like Merlot, Syrah, Bordeaux and Cabernet Sauvignon should be served at 60-65 degrees Fahrenheit. Fruity and light-bodied reds like Chianti, Chinon, and Rioja, along with most white wines like Chardonnay, Riesling, White Burgundy, and Spatlese, are best served at 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit. While vintage Champagne, ice wines, and Asti Spumanti are perfect at 40-45 degrees Fahrenheit.

Not decanting or aerating wine Simply put, decanting wine is the process of transferring the tipple from bottle to decanter before serving the beverage to your guests. This is usually done to aged, full-bodied wines with high tannin content - think Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and their respective blends. Aside from filtering the sediments in the wine, decanting also helps aerate the beverage. As you pour the wine into your decanter, oxygen is introduced to the tipple, helping open up the wine’s flavours and aromas. Let the wine sit in your glass for another 15-20 minutes, and what you’ll have is a smoother and tastier drinking experience. Poor wine storage There’s a reason why respectable restaurants house their finest tipples in wine fridges and wine cellars. This is because proper wine storage is a must, if you’re planning on aging or keeping wine in bulk. The important thing is that you keep your bottles in a place that has the right humidity and temperature levels at all times. Keep in mind that the ideal

temperature for wine storage is at 55-58 degrees Fahrenheit. While the required humidity level is between 55-75 percent. Keep your bottles away from harsh light - whether natural or artificial - and your wines should continue aging beautifully.

Picking wine without taking food into consideration Here’s the simple truth to wine and food pairings: your choice of wine can make or break your entire dining experience. Many wine drinkers make the mistake of choosing their favourite wine without consulting the menu. Often, they end up with clashing flavours. What would have been a great meal, becomes a gustatory disaster. We say, take your food into consideration before picking your wine. Are you having a large slab of steak, or a piece of baked cream dory? Are you having salad for lunch, or a bowl of ramen? Traditionally, red wine is paired with red meat, white wine with white meat or fish, and rosé with hors d’oeuvres and canapés. Of course, that’s not always a hard and fast rule. Taste matters. It’s a known fact that high-acidity wines go well with sweet or fatty food, and tannic wines taste wonderful when paired with a sweet dish.

Packed with plant protein Protein generally makes up about 17 per cent of a person’s body weight and is an essential part of nutrition. It is the main component of our immune system, muscles, skin, internal organs, heart, brain, hair and nails. Though the popular belief is non-vegetarian foods, like chicken and eggs, are main sources of protein, a well-planned vegan or vegetarian diet does not lack in protein either. Quinoa This seed is a complete source of protein as it contains all 22 of the essential amino acids. Quinoa is also rich in complex carbs, fibre, iron, manganese, phosphorus and magnesium. Available in black, white, red and mixed varieties, it can be consumed in place of couscous and rice. Soybean A cheap and excellent source of protein, soybean is a kind of legume widely consumed in Asia. It is packed with dietary minerals and B vitamins. The non-fermented food use of soybeans includes soy milk, from which tofu is made, while tempeh and edamame are fermented soy foods. Oats Apart from proteins, oats are also rich in fiber, magnesium, zinc, phosphorus and folate. The slow energy-release cereal can be used in a variety of recipes or ground into flour and further used for baking. Wild rice With 1.5 times more protein than brown or basmati rice, wild rice is a nutrient-rich food. It also contains fiber, vitamins and minerals. However, one important thing to note is that wild rice is not stripped off its bran, which can gather toxic arsenic in polluted areas. Chia seeds The seeds of the Salvia hispanica plant are rich

in protein as well as fiber, iron, calcium, selenium, magnesium and omage-3 fatty acids. Its ability to absorb water and expand makes it an easy replacement for egg and a go-to ingredient in baking. You can use chia seeds in breakfasts, sprinkle it over salads and soups, or serve up a healthy, protein-rich dessert. Buckwheat These gluten-free seeds are high in protein and fiber. Despite its name, it is unrelated to wheat or the grasses of the wheat family. Commonly found in flakes, groats, pasta and flour, it is gaining popularity as a great binding agent and is used extensively in Japanese cuisine. Beans, pulses and lentils These are not just tasty, but also extremely healthy as they are packed with the goodness of proteins, vitamins and minerals. There is plenty of variety to choose from and each of these plant protein sources come with unique health benefits. Ancient grains Grains that have remained largely unchanged over the last several centuries are called ancient grains. Spelt, teff, einkorn, barley, sorghum, amaranath, quinoa and farro are some commonly found ancient grains. These are considered nutritional powerhouses that are high in protein. Additionally, spelt and teff contain higher protein content compared to other ancient grains. Green peas These little wonder pods are nutritious and delicious. Apart from plenty of protein, they contain fiber, vitamins A, C and K, thiamine, folate, manganese, iron, phosphorus, zinc and copper. They are used in a wide range of recipes and can be easily made a regular feature in your diet.

McDonald’s trials vegan nuggets

Following Greggs’ pioneering vegan sausage roll lead, fast food chain McDonald’s is launching a new plantbased alternative for one of its most popular meat snacks. McVegan nuggets, a meat-free alternative to chicken nuggets, are currently being offered in select branches of McDonald’s. A spokesperson from the company explained that these vegan nuggets were made up of mashed potato, chickpeas, onion, carrots and corn, covered in breadcrumbs and deep-friend until crispy and you can currently find them being trialled in the Norway branches of the fast food shop. This is said to be the third vegan offering from the global chain. In 2017 the brand began offering customers a soy-based McVegan burger in Finland and in January of this year they revealed the McFalafel in Sweden. And, if you’re wondering why the Scandis get all the meat-free fun, then you should know there’s a vegan Happy Meal currently available in the UK that stars a Spicy Veggie Wrap. The wrap is made up of, blended split peas, breadcrumbs, Arborio rice, sun-dried tomato pesto

McAloo Tikki

and red peppers in a fried veggie strip. In Chicago one branch has adopted one of India’s best-selling items, the McAloo Tikki which featured a patty made from potatoes and peas. Basically, McDonald’s is a hop, skip and a jump away from being a dream destination for a hungover vegan and we fully support this.

Happy birthday Heinz It's hard to believe it, but familyfavourite Heinz is turning the ripe old age of 150 this year. And while the majority of us are probably most familiar with Heinz ketchupintroduced in 1876 - before the invention of the light-bulb or the completion of the Eiffel Tower! the company produces thousands of products across more than 80 percent of the world's countries. This includes the newest ketchup, sweetened with only honey. In honour of the company's milestone, here are 11 facts you may not know about Heinz...including where that iconic 57 came from. Heinz sells a whopping 11bil packets of ketchup a year, which is two packets for every person on the planet, and two billion packets for every person currently in space (six!). Tomatoes didn't make it into ketchup until the late 1800s, since most right-minded people

considered it a poisonous cousin to nightshade. The speed at which ketchup pours from a glass bottle is 0.0450km/hour, which is also the approximate speed of a garden snail. Today's ketchup is a muchremoved ancestor of Asian ke-tchup, which was a fish sauce made of fermented intestines, stomach, and bladder. You might imagine Heinz buys a ton of tomatoes every year, but that's not accurate. They buy two million tons of tomatoes every year. The main ketchup plant (like factory, not tomato) is in Fremont, Ohio, whose most famous native son is Everton Conger, known for ketching Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth. Heinz is leaving all other ketchup brands in the dust (they'll never catch up!) by pioneering an augmented reality technology called Blippar, which allows them

to deliver recipe tips via smartphone. Tap the 57 on the bottleneck in order to make the ketchup pour more quickly. Apparently 11% of Americans already know this trick while the rest of us silently suffer from snail-like pouring speeds. You might imagine Heinz buys a ton of tomatoes every year, but that's not accurate. They buy two million tons of tomatoes every year. Coal tar was originally used as dye to give Heinz its red colour. Today's ketchup is a muchremoved ancestor of Asian ke-tchup, which was a fish sauce made of fermented intestines, stomach, and bladder. Heinz sold more than 57 varieties of products when it first branded itself. The number was chosen because the founder considered it lucky, and because he just never gave himself enough credit.

Get rid of dry, peeling skin fast No one likes looking in the mirror and seeing peeling skin. Sometimes, you can predict when you’re about to have a shed session (cold weather, a new retinol routine, or an overly dry complexion are all major culprits), but other times there’s no rhyme or reason behind the dryness. After all, the average person loses over a hundred pounds of skin during their lifetime, which is perfectly normal—even if it sounds a little gross. Exfoliate weekly. Since St. Ives’ iconic Apricot Scrub first came onto the scene in the early '90s, you've probably known about the wonders of exfoliating. Beyond giving you brighter skin, regular exfoliation also fights off flakes in a major way. Physical exfoliators, such as gentle scrubs, can help rid the skin of dead cells that can cause flakes. Chemical exfoliators, such as alpha or beta hydroxy acids, help promote cell turnover and decrease peeling. Limit yourself to exfoliating one to two times a week since overdoing it can increase irritation (read: even more peeling). And whatever you do, don’t pick flakes off with your fingers or tweezers: This

causes cracks in the skin that become doorways for infection. 2. Don't forget to moisturize. After you exfoliate, it’s all about hydration. Once you’ve removed the top layer of dead skin cells, apply moisturiser to create a barrier between your newly exposed skin and the elements. Use a product that’s infused with ceramides—fats that help your skin form a protective barrier between irritants and aids in retaining moisture. Petroleum jelly and coconut oil are also good options for treating flaky skin. Coconut oil’s emollient properties help fill the spaces between skin cells, creating a smooth surface, while petroleum jelly creates a protective layer above the skin to help trap moisture and heal dry skin. If your skin feels extra arid, stash a travel size hydrating facial spray in your bag to spritz on throughout the day. Confirm it’s not a bigger issue. If you’re faithfully exfoliating and moisturising, but nothing seems to work, book an appointment with an expert. Typical flakiness caused by

dehydration clears up a day or two after using moisturiser, but if you're dealing with an underlying medical issue, some at-home remedies can further irritate skin. 4. Change up your shower routine. When the weather is unbearably cold, it’s tempting to take a long, hot shower to help you forget about the polar vortex outside. Unfortunately, this makes peeling worse as it causes the skin to dry out and become flaky. Instead, bathe for a shorter amount of time and use warm, not scalding, water. Switch to fragrance-free, dye-free products. For persistent peeling, consider a medicine cabinet makeover. Scents and colours added to products, like cleansers and moisturisers or even laundry detergent, can irritate the skin. Using gentle, hypoallergenic products can decrease inflammation and flaking. Or apply cold, plain yogurt to dry skin for ten minutes before rinsing off with warm water. This will soften and nourish skin while also sloughing away any roughness.

Strawberry-C Here's Why 'Strawberry-C' Serum Is About to Be Your Favorite New Anti-Aging Product. Vitamin C is an all-time favourite skincare ingredient. It’s a powerful antioxidant, vitamin C can help brighten dark spots and hyper-pigmentation, increase collagen production, and soften the appearance of fine lines. Celebs like Brooke Shields (a fan of Drunk Elephant's version and Lady Gaga (an Ole Henriksen devotee) swear by vitamin C skincare products too. So, when a new form of vitamin C dubbed "strawberry-C" launched the skin-care fans were intrigued. Can strawberry fruit extract deliver similarly impressive results? Volition Beauty's Strawberry-C Brightening Serum launched recently on Sephora.com and the product has already amassed more than 3,000 "loves" and a few rave reviews. "Instant brightening with subtle hydration," writes one reviewer; others note the "lightweight" texture and the fact that it "doesn’t feel sticky or tacky on the skin" like some vitamin C products. Dermatologists agree that strawberries are indeed a rich source of vitamin C and

can help improve hyper-pigmentation and soften the appearance of fine lines when used in skincare products. Another benefit? Strawberries boast acne-fighting properties. You can find salicylic acid in strawberries, an ingredient which lessens the symptoms of acne and encourages exfoliation of skin and unclogging of pores. Experts are also a fan of some of the other ingredients in the formula, including cucumbers—They contain

antioxidants and promote hydration due to their high water content and hyaluronic acid to plump skin. Also good: The formula is free of sulfates, parabens, formaldehydes, phthalates, and oxybenzone. Strawberry-C has at least one celeb endorsement too: According to the brand, the idea to create a serum with strawberries was inspired by Marilyn Monroe, who would allegedly rub the fruit directly on her skin.

Walk off an early death A brisk walk even once a week is enough to significantly reduce the chances of early death, a new study has found. Analysis showed that weekly gentle exercise, such as walking or gardening, could cut the risk by nearly 20 per cent. But being active for longer or participating in vigorous sports has additional health benefits, researchers said. The new study, shows that even lowlevel physical activities are associated with a lower risk of death from heart

disease, cancer or any cause. The researchers used figures collected through the surveys between 1997 and 2008 to estimate the activity levels of 88,140 people aged 40 to 85, and linked that data with registered deaths up until the end of 2011. Compared with people who were inactive, those who participated in just 10 to 59 minutes per week of moderate physical activities during their leisure time had an 18 per cent lower risk of death from any cause over the study period.

Cardio exercises to blast fat Just admit it: the treadmill, stationary bike, and elliptical can get boring after a while. But we get that you don't want to give up cardio entirely. If you need to spice up your cardio, we've got you covered. Here are some tried-and-true exercises that will get your heart rate up and strengthen the hell out of your cardiovascular system. And if you're trying to lose weight, these will become your very best friends. Jump squats Begin in an athletic stance with feet shoulder-width apart and arms bent with hands at chest level. Bend knees and come into a full squat. Jump up as explosively as you can, reaching for the ceiling. When you land, lower back into the squat position to complete one rep. Burpees Lower into a crouching squat with your hands on the floor. Do a squat thrust by jumping your feet back into a plank position. Do one basic push-up, bending the elbows and then straightening back to plank. Jump the feet forward to the hands and come into a squat. Do an explosive jump straight up, getting as much height as you can. This counts as one rep. 180 Jump Begin facing the left side of your mat (or space) with feet hip-distance apart, core tight, slightly hinged at the hips. Jump 180 degrees to your right, keeping your elbows near your rib cage and hands in front of you for balance. Jump 180

degrees to your left; make sure to be light on your feet, moving quickly.

keep your pelvis steady and don't let your booty rise toward the ceiling.

High-knee Skips Skip in place by hopping on your right leg while bringing the left knee up toward your chest. Engage your abs as the knee comes toward your chest. Switch legs and keep skipping while pumping your arms.

Under the Fence and Kick Start with your feet together. Step out to the side with your right foot and bend forward at the hips slightly, keeping your back flat. With a neutral spine, bring your body to the right side in a sweeping motion, like you're ducking under a fence. Step your left foot to meet your right and kick your right foot up to the side, keeping your hands close to your core.

Mountain Climbers Start in a traditional plank: shoulders over hands and weight in your toes. With your core engaged, bring your right knee forward under your chest, with the toes just off the ground. Return to your basic plank. Switch legs, bringing the left knee forward. Keep switching legs and begin to pick up the pace until it feels a little like running in place in a plank position. Planks Jacks Begin in the plank position, with your shoulders over your wrists, your body in one straight line, and your feet together. Like the motion of jumping jacks, jump your legs wide apart, and then back together to complete a rep. Jump as quickly as you want, but

Frogger Begin in a plank position. Jump your feet to the outside of your hands, coming into a deep squat and keeping your hands on the floor. Jump your feet back to a plank. This counts as one rep. Jump Shot Start at the left edge of your mat and take a big step to the right, moving through a low, wide squat, sweeping the mat with your left hand. Bring your left foot to your right, coming into a narrow squat. Jump straight into the air and "take a shot" with your right hand. Don't forget to follow

through by straightening your elbow and flicking your wrist as if you were shooting a basketball. Land softly with your feet parallel. Keeping your knees bent, step the left leg wide to the side to repeat the entire sequence on the other side. The side-to-side movement should be fluid and controlled. Lateral Bunny Hop Make small jumps side to side as if you are jumping over an invisible line. Keep your legs as close together as possible and swing your arms to help you jump. Reverse Lunge and Hop Come into a lunge with your right leg back. Swing your right leg forward to hop up on your left foot and land softly back in a lunge. This counts as one rep. Box Jumps Stand with your feet slightly wider than hipwidth distance apart in front of a sturdy box. Bend your knees and swing your arms back. Jump onto the top of the box with both feet at the same time, swinging the arms

forward to give you a little momentum. Once you land, stand up until your legs are straight and drive your hips forward. Step one foot at a time back to the floor or jump down softly with both feet. This counts as one rep. Plank with Bunny Hop Begin in a plank position with feet touching. Pull your abs in and jump your feet to the right, bringing your knees toward your right elbow. Your torso will twist to the right. To complete one rep, jump your feet back to plank. Cross Jacks Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and extend your arms straight out to either side with palms facing down. Jump and cross your right arm over your left and your right foot over your left. Jump your legs to the sides and open your arms, then cross with the opposite arm and foot. Ali Shuffle Keeping your weight on the balls of your feet, scissor your legs front and back. This is quick footwork and it should be light and fast. Pump your arms to keep the speed of the feet up in tempo. Hopscotch Bouncing off the balls of your feet, jump your feet wide. Hop back to center on your left foot, then jump your feet wide. Hop back to center on your right foot, and continue alternating in this pattern.

Tech Fact Gary from Almoradi asks: Hi Aunty. I'm using Internet Explorer on Windows 10 and I'm having difficulty deleting my 'Favourites'. I used to be able to do this very easily by 'right clicking' on the favourite, then 'delete' or otherwise by going into 'Favourites' 'Organise favourites' highlight the favourite then hit 'Delete'. Both these things still initially delete the website but usually within minutes or sometimes by the next day, it reappears again at the bottom of the favourites list. I've spent ages deleting dozens of favourites but each time hey presto, they are back and I'm baffled. As this was a function that previously worked, I was wondering if it is likely to be a result of an automated Windows 10 update? Aunty Says: Hi Gary. I think that Internet Explorer is synchronising the favourites stored on your computer with another device, such as your phone or tablet. You can switch syncing off by clicking on the start icon and select “setting” “accounts” and click on “Sync your settings” and turn off Internet explorer settings. You now should be able to delete your unwanted favourites. Beryl from Quesada asks: We have treated ourselves to a brand new Windows 10 laptop but our old Windows 7 one had a proper paid copy Microsoft Office which we

used to write letters and my husband writes short stories and poems. The shop I called said I must now pay an extra €130 to have it reinstalled and they can’t copy it from my old laptop as they say they have binned it (luckily we did keep a USB backup of our documents) so I don’t know what to do. Aunty Says: Hello Beryl. Unless you have any of the original Office installation stuff (possibly emails with the activation code) you´re looking at around €80 for the latest 2016 version. €80 is a lot more than the marvellous Wordpad app that comes bundled with Windows so maybe give that a go. Click on the start icon (or press the Windows logo key) and type worpad and the app should show up in the list. Also unless your old Windows 7 laptop had been through the washing machine I’d be very surprised if it had all been “binned” so maybe check again with the shop just in case your

Gwen via email asks: Hello Aunty. I work for a local charity and I print a lot of emails every day but nearly all of what I print is just simple text so could happily be black and white but most of the time a load of colour adverts are included and we seem to be using as much expensive colour ink as we are black. Is there a way to remove or disable the colour cartridge? We tried this but we get an error message “insert cartridge” and I can only print the document after I have put the colour one back in. Aunty Says: Hi Gwen. No you won’t be able to remove the colour cartridge without an error messages from the printer but you can set up your printer to print only in black and white or draft/economy mode. The easiest way to do this is by holding down the ‘Ctrl’ key and pressing ‘P’ just before you are ready to print. Click the ‘properties’ button and this should display various printing options. All printers and programs are a little different, but the principles are the same. Well that’ll do for another week, email your problems to auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com and I will see what I can do.

N332 Needs Your Help Incar cameras Once again, the N332 Road Safety Project has been nominated and shortlisted in a national award that recognises contributions to road safety. The “Ponle Freno Citizen 2019” is awarded public vote, and so we need your help to support us. Representing N332 once again is Francisco Javier Morales Herrera, the original founder of the project group, a serving Guardia Civil traffic officer based in Torrevieja. The nomination this year has been given thanks to the volunteers and supporters who helped to translate the Spanish Traffic Law eBook, which, as the nomination itself describes, aims to help foreign driver better understand our traffic regulations, hoping to reduce accidents and traffic infractions. The three finalists are Aura Anahi Chávez López, Francisco Javier Morales Herrera, and José María Gracia. Everyone at N332 acknowledges the tireless work the other candidates have undertaken. Whilst travelling on a bus on the Llanes-Oviedo line, Aura Anahi noticed that the driver was in trouble and took control of the bus to bring it to a safe stop, avoiding serious injury, or worse, for the 16 passengers on board. José María Gracia was a municipal worker who died in 2018, known locally as el 'hombre semáforo', he regulated traffic for 20 years in the Zaragoza town of Quinto, as the school crossing patrol, “lollipop man”. Finally, we have Francisco Javier Morales Herrera, a Guardia Civil traffic officer who first devised and set up the N332 project, which developed into a Facebook page, a

website cataloguing news and articles, outreach work within the community, and this latest major project, the translation of the Spanish Traffic Law into English. Much as we do recognise the work of the others, and we respect the work that they do tremendously, we are asking now for your help to vote for Francisco, who is representing everyone behind the project who have taken it to where we are today. Winning the award, which is nationally recognised, will help raise awareness of the need for such documents as the traffic law to be available in multiple languages, or at least English, as it is vital, in fact life-essential, that these safety-

critical laws are understood. The nomination alone adds strength to the project and our ability to lobby for important change like this, whilst still continuing to develop, whereas winning would prove our argument for the need of this to be done, across all platforms. Voting is easy. All you have to do is visit the page of the organisers, at https://compromiso.atresmedia.com/po nlefreno/premios/2019/vota-ciudadanoponle-freno-2019_201903205c923ea80c f24e4f1c6643ad.html (or visit n332.es where we have put a direct link to make it easier to remember). Then scroll down to where you see Francisco, dressed in the N332 red polo shirt, and click the fifth, the right-hand star in the row of five BELOW the paragraph that describes him. You may of course read more about the other finalists and what they have achieved, and you may prefer to vote for them, but you only get one vote, so we ask that you use it to vote for N332, through Francisco, and help raise our profile even further. Having already been nominated last year, N332 has already become recognised by the four main road safety charity groups in Spain, and the European Commission for Road Safety, but as this is a public vote, it is one of the most important that can be awarded. We would like to thank you in advance for taking the time to vote, and again, we would like to take this opportunity to extend those thanks to everyone who worked on the eBook project, the translators, and the companies who continue to support our development, all of which the volunteers at N332 would not be able to do without. So thank you.

After rolling-out a 112mph speed-cap on all its cars from 2020, Volvo has now pledged to include driver-facing cameras and sensors in all its vehicles, too. The cameras and sensors should be present in all Volvo models by the early 2020s and will work to crackdown on – and look for – signs of driver distraction. Think checking your phone, being intoxicated and generally not paying attention to the road. If distraction is detected, Volvo says the cars could either reduce the car’s speed, slow down and park the car – or contact Volvo’s on Call assistance service. Like the speed-cap revealed earlier in the year, the new measures should boost Volvo’s progress towards Vision 2020, a mission to stop fatalities in cars by 2020. Volvo spoke to CAR earlier in the year about the system, and you can see what the Swedish brand originally said before. Although some owners may fear ‘spycams’ watching their every move, tech bosses are adamant that smart cameras will bring a host of benefits to owners in the same way that modern mobile phones and wearable tech monitor your health. Atif Rafiq, Volvo’s chief digital officer, said that the cameras are being developed - but only as an option, so they’re not forced upon customers. This neatly sidesteps the thorny issue of perceived surveillance behind the wheel. ‘Driver-facing cameras will become an

option in our cars next year,’ Rafiq said. ‘They’re very advanced these days: they can determine a driver’s glucose levels by looking at their pupils, so could call a loved one or hospital if it detected a health problem. Cars will understand your state and de-stress you on your way back from work.’ The Swedish brand is famous for putting occupant safety as one of its top goals and it believes that camera technology is now so advanced that it can actively predict driver health problems before they happen. As far back as 2014, it filmed drivers in Shanghai (below) as it sought to understand how humans reacted in stressful city driving. And Volvo has been busy testing onboard cameras in its XC90 Drive Me autonomous car test project. In 2017 it showcased the smart cams in the cabin used to track driver behaviour as the car flicked between autonomous and conventional driving; these cameras proved a vital learning step towards the production units being prepared for launch after 2020. Volvo believes that users will rapidly learn to trust onboard cameras: footage will be anonymised and not shared, plus there’s a whole world of biometric possibility out there, predicts Rafiq. ‘Cameras can be used for video conferencing and ID purposes too. Your car will recognise you and set your Google apps, climate control and seating position for you. It’s very clever,’ he said.

Time for your First ITV You´ve been driving around in your new vehicle for some time now, you´ve had little inconvenience or problem, other than taking it for a quick service, but now it´s come of age and it´s time for it to undertake its first ever ITV inspection. Don´t worry, there is nothing scary about the test; it is a simple procedure that ensures that the primary safety features on the vehicle are working. You won´t be judged on your taste in music, or if you have flowery seat covers, it is just about the safety elements.

any sharp edges. Vehicle designs are always smooth and flowing, partly for aerodynamic reasons, but also, in this case, because sharp edges can cause considerably more damage in the event of a collision. Imagine if the wing of the car was damaged and has a serrated edge where the previous collision took place. If that part of the car impacted with a pedestrian or cyclist, for example, the damage would be catastrophic. As you go around the vehicle make sure that the rear-view mirrors on the

Frosting

That said, there are a few things that you can check before you go for your ITV inspection, and make it even easier, after all the aim is to come away with a successful inspection so that we can continue driving. When you subject your vehicle to a test, there are three possible outcomes. Favourable, in which the vehicle has passed with no problems, unfavourable, in which case the vehicle has failed. In the event of an unfavourable report, the vehicle cannot be driven. The same applies for an expired ITV test in the future, if your ITV expires then the vehicle is not permitted on the public roads, you must arrange to truck, a grua, to take the vehicle on its back. In the UK it is possible to book an appointment for your MOT and you are permitted to drive the vehicle to that appointment, irrespective of the status of the car. In Spain there is no such luxury. If a vehicle does not have a valid ITV certificate, it cannot be driven on the roads. The third possible status after the test will be that the inspector has noticed some minor faults. In this case, the vehicle will not be failed, but these faults will be detailed on the ITV report you will be given at the end of the test. You then have a maximum of two months in which to have these faults repaired. However, today we are talking about things that can be checked before we go for the examination, and therefore, hopefully, pass with a favourable result. First, take a slow and detailed walk around the vehicle. Look closely at the body work. You need to pay particular attention to deformations, misshapes, dents and the likes, but particularly for

outside are in good condition, not broken or speckled, and that visibility is good. You will have to do the same for the interior mirror too. All mirrors must be correctly fixed in their original housings and firm.

Whilst we are walking around the vehicle, also check the tyres. Make sure that there is sufficient tread around each tyre, that the wear (if any) is equal, and that there are no deformations. You need to carry out both a visible check and also get your hands dirty by feeling your way around each tyre, including on the side that you can´t see, and don´t forget to check the spare wheel if your vehicle has one.

It is also a good idea to check each of the tyres conforms to the requirements printed on the vehicle´s documentation. As we are moving to the interior of the vehicle, check all the doors. Make sure that they all open easily, that they close, and that they remain securely closed. Next, we need to check the seat belts. Make sure that all seat belts move freely when pulled from their roll, and then give each of them a jolt to make sure that they lock when they are supposed to. You also need to make sure that free movement returns after the jolt. Ensure that the seat belts all click into their locking attachment, and unclip easily when pressed. They must not come away from the locking mechanism unless the button is pressed. To make things easier during the inspection, it is a good idea to leave any unused seat belts buckled fully, as that speeds the process up slightly for the inspectors. From inside the vehicle we need to check that the horn works, although be careful when you test this so as not to alarm anybody. Don´t forget that the interior rear view mirror also needs checking that it is clear and firmly fixed. Whilst checking the horn, we can also check the lights, perhaps getting someone to help you at this point, as all lights need to be tested, so that means the headlights, dipped and full beam, brake lights, indicators, reversing lights, and fog lights, making sure they all work correctly. Pay close attention to the headlights during this check, making sure that the glass is clear. In Spain we suffer from a “frosting” effect as the strong sun discolours the coating on the headlights. This frosting can result in a failed examination, so make sure they are clear and get them treated before the test if needed. Whilst also sat in the vehicle, check the dashboard, in particular looking for any obvious problems such as engine warning lights, or other warnings, as these too can prevent the vehicle from passing. Finally, on the subject of clarity, the windscreen wipers must be in good condition, and the windscreen washer reservoir topped up with liquid for cleaning the windscreen. If you carry out these simple checks, there is a higher chance of you getting through the test without any problems, but we must keep in mind that some faults cannot be seen by these basic checks, but the examiners are highly trained and qualified in ensuring that the safety features are all working, and so if anything is identified as being wrong, not only is it important to get it fixed, it is an important way of having faults which could lead to further problems identified.

Lo Crispin Golf Society Aintree Grand national TPGS Vistabella meeting beckons for Umbrigado On 20th. March 21 members and 1 guest played in an Alternative Yellow Ball competition, so called because instead of the best 2 scores counting at each hole, 3 of the 4 team stableford scores are counted. As 2 people cancelled shortly before the event we had to use 2 'blind partners'. Although the wind was not as strong as the last time we played at La Serena, the cold and frequent rain showers, made for very difficult and unpleasant conditions for golf. No doubt the adverse weather conditions greatly accounted for the 'slow' greens. The course was otherwise in generally good shape. The prizes for the day, were as always awarded at the Lo Crispin Tavern and the welcome Tapas provided by David and his helpful staff. As is often the case in this type of competition, the team which retains the yellow ball throughout the round (or most of it) usually wins. This turned out to the case on this occasion, with the team of Martin Barker, Sue Smith and Janet Candlin ( and 'blind partner') came

in 1st. Place, with a creditable score of 126 pts. A team comprised of Tony Perkins, Ted Turvey (guest), Eddy Scott and Sue´s husband, Brian Smith came a very close second with 125 pts N.T. P. on Par 3s. Hole 3 - Ted Turvey Hole 8 - Rod Pullen Hole 12 - Paddy Shea Hole 16 - Janet Candlin Ted Turvey's day was completed by being the only player to make a 2 and so took the 'pot'. The Free Game Draw was won by committee member, Charlie Robertson. The next Society game, will be an individual stableford competition, playing for our Anniversary Trophy at Altoreal on 3rd. April. Anyone interested in joining the Society or just playing as a guest should contact any member of the Committee, whose contact details can be found on the Society's website. Steve Harrington (Membership and Handicap Secretary).

David Pipe is planning to put Umbrigado to the test at a higher level at next month's Grand National meeting. The Irish pointto-point recruit is unbeaten in three starts under rules landing a Uttoxeter bumper, a maiden hurdle at Southwell and then a novice at Exeter. Pipe decided to sidestep the Cheltenham Festival with his five-yearold, but a trip to Aintree is under serious consideration. The Devon trainer said: "Umbrigado was impressive in his bumper and last

Las Ramblas Golf Society We kick started our week with the best two scores from four on each hole to count but with all on the par 3’s. Taking first place, with 98 points, were Geoff Biggerstaff, Peter Wickham, Terry Field and the fictional Albert. (I wish Albert had been in my team!) Now I’ve taken my fair share of barracking over the years playing golf, but having a baby squirrel sitting on my foot whilst trying to putt out on the 8th takes some beating! Bit of a David Attenborough moment. Onto to Wednesday’s first ‘major’ of the year the ‘Caja Murcia’ Stableford competition. Not only being the sole person to score a ‘2’ today, Nora Betts took the trophy with a terrific 39 points. She was chased by Allen McClusky on 35 and Geoff Biggerstaff, who with 34 points, took the 3rd slot. A special mention here

to Heinz Lei who managed 22 points on the front 9 holes but just 3 on the back! There were four nearest the pins today; they went to Peter Shervell, Ken Robertson, Ellen Drakesmith and Tom Hardie. Bryan Neal didn’t quite get the nearest the pin objective as he put his tee shot on the par 3 tenth to within a yard of the blue tees! Finally onto Friday and we played ‘change partners’. Scoring 80 points and taking 1st place, our winners were Bryan Neal, Allen McClusky, Mike Chapman and Annemarie Weisheit. Por ultimo, a few of our players should bear in mind the quote from Henry Cotton; ‘missing a short putt does not mean you have to hit your next drive out of bounds’. Pues, hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell

time at Exeter. "He's a horse we've thought a lot of and he's going to have to step up again, but he warrants taking his chance in a better race. "He might go up to Aintree, because he missed Cheltenham. He'll be entered in the two and the two-and-a-half-mile novice hurdles." Umbrigado could be joined on the trip to Aintree by stablemate Eden Du Houx. The five-year-old won bumpers at Plumpton and Ascot in December, and Pipe resisted the temptation to run him in the Champion Bumper at Cheltenham. He added: "Eden Du Houx missed Cheltenham and he could go to Aintree or Punchestown. "We left him out of Cheltenham. I spoke to Caroline (Tisdall, owner), and we just decided we'd wait for either Aintree or Punchestown. "He's had a little break and seems in good form - and has done nothing wrong this season."

On this beautifully warm spring day the TPGS ventured over to Vistabella. The super fast greens proved to be a challenge for most of us particularly with some of the precarious pin positions! The 2’s pot was shared by the ‘inform’ Liz Sully and Ray Waite. Liz also picked up one of the treasured Ale House vouchers with a NTP (thanks to Karl and Lisa at the newly renovated Ale House) , Simon Lee bagged 2, Kev McBird and Val McNicholls each securing one. Alistair Gordon came last with a woeful 16pts, certainly room for improvement there! Once again Liz Sully was by far the best lady with a frankly rather disappointing 28 pts (19 of those where on the front 9). In the Silver division Ray Waite came 3rd with 29 pts George Maguire 2nd with 30 but the winner was the ever speedy Mike Greatorex with 33 pts! The Gold division was won by young Warren O'Harris with an impressive 35 pts (leaping into 1st place in the Order of Merit) 2nd place was won by returning ex Captain Simon Lee and 3rd place was Phil "fresh air" Sully. Our next outing is on the 5th April at El Valle. With only 2 games to go in our season long Order of Merit competition and 6 players all in contention you’d be foolish not to book your spot online at www.theplazagolfsociety.com

Tales from the Top Flight finished the game with two 18-year-old players on the pitch for the first time in even longer. As you can see, no stone has been left unturned in pulling out these facts. England were really quite good. And not just because they normally get through the qualification process for these tournaments without really breaking sweat. They passed the ball well and with Harry Kane linking up with Sterling and Jadon Sancho, Gareth Southgate's young side looked quality on the attack. That said, even with Michael Keane in the back four, the Czech's didn't look that threatening. It

Dear reader, when there is no funny football news coming out of the Premier League because it's an international week we should all pause for a moment and thank the stars for the existence of the Scotland national football team. Growing up as a lad, it was Scottish goalkeepers that were the laughing stock. Now it is the whole team. Scottish football has fallen so far that they are now losing football matches to countries that didn't even exist the last time they played in a major tournament. That's 1998, in case anyone is counting. And I am fairly sure that Kazakhstan didn't exist in 1998. I might be wrong, but my point remains the same. Forget the fact they won (just) against San Marino on Sunday. There was nothing they could do against that lot that could make up for the embarrassment that was the 3-0 loss on Thursday. After the match, the manager Alex McLeish came out and claimed Scotland had started the game 'brightly'. Brightly? Scotland were 2-0 within ten minutes. Did they have a particularly good warm up? And how bright could that have been? There was a slightly odd scenario in the TV studios where you had a failed Scotland manager in Gordon Strachan passing comment on Scotland's worst ever performance in an international

for the taking. Eric Dier picked up an injury with disappointed Liverpool fans with Tottenham travelling to Anfield next weekend. Conveniently, England started to play better after Dier went off

back underway. McCarthy admitted after the match that he had 'hated every minute' of the match and having watched it myself, I can completely understand why. The Irish ended nicking it 1-0 but Gibraltar had their moments to create yet another comical story of football failure from the local nations. Wales played Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday night and I won't lie to you. I have no idea of the result. I did enjoy their 1-0 win over Slovakia, however, and mainly down to the fact I got to watch Swansea's Daniel James scare the living daylights of another defence due to his sheer rapidity. He is quick. Very quick and not much else. A bit like today's column.

Alex McLeish

fixture. It must have been all he could do to not say, 'and you thought it was rubbish when I was in charge!' UEFA and FIFA can keep expanding their tournaments all they want. Unless they invite 100 teams to the next few you won't be seeing Scotland there. On Friday night, England made pretty light work of the Czech Republic thanks largely to a hat-trick from Manchester City's Raheem Sterling. Sterling became the first player since Alan Shearer to score a club and country treble in the same season. Callum Hudson-Odoi, yet to start a Premier League match for a struggling Chelsea side, came off the bench to become England's youngest cap in a competitive match since Duncan Edwards way back when. And England

Eric Dier

Callum Hudson-Odoi

wouldn't have taken a genius to think that an England defence with Keane and Jordan Pickford in it might be there

and was replaced by Ross Barkley who must have been shocked to be coming on as a substitute and not replacing Mateo Kovacic. So, a 5-0 win for England in what could well have been a repeat of the Euro 96 Final if Paul Gascoigne had chosen the long studs that night. Mick McCarthy was back in the Ireland dugout and was treated to a match against Gibraltar in the local school playground to get his tenure

Ronnie O'Sullivan becomes world number one Ronnie O'Sullivan became world number one for the first time since 2010 by edging a thrilling Tour Championship final against Neil Robertson. O'Sullivan led 5-3 overnight in Llandudno but Robertson had the better of Sunday's first session to reach 8-8. He levelled again at 10-10 but never led and an 89 saw O'Sullivan win 13-11. "To get to number one probably playing half the events some other guys

do is probably one of the best achievements across sports," said O'Sullivan. "I've never been driven by number one as if I was I'd probably enter a few more tournaments," added O'Sullivan, who overtakes Mark Selby at the top of the world rankings. O'Sullivan's success also sees him tie with Stephen Hendry's record of 36 ranking titles.

'The Rocket' could surpass the mark at the World Championships in Sheffield, which begin on 20 April. "Congratulations to Neil - him and Judd Trump have been the two best this season along with myself," he added. "If one of us doesn't win the World Championship I'll be surprised." Earlier in March, O'Sullivan became the first man to reach 1,000 career centuries when he sealed a 10-4 win over Australia's

Robertson in the Players Championship final. They both won a session 5-3 to go into the final session in Llandudno at 8-8, and O'Sullivan signalled his intent with a 129 to edge ahead. He was on the verge of victory at 12-10 but Robertson dug out a break of 56 to prolong matters until O'Sullivan produced an 89 before saluting the a jubilant crowd.

Paul Casey retains title with thrilling win in Florida Paul Casey became the first man to retain the Valspar Championship after an enthralling final day in Florida. Casey, 41, led by one overnight but dropped three shots on the opening nine as a pack of players applied pressure. The Englishman was level with Jason Kokrak at eight under on the 18th but the American made bogey, meaning Casey needed a par four at the last to win. He found a bunker off the tee but hit the green from there and two-putted for a first win since last year's victory. "It feels cool," said Casey, who made bogey on 17 to fall back to eight under alongside Kokrak. "It was messy but this course was so difficult and I did make errors. Looking at 72 holes, it was hard work." Casey's win means European golfers have won the past three PGA Tour events, following Rory McIlroy's victory at the Players Championship and Francesco Molinari's success at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

The Briton was one clear of world number one Dustin Johnson going into the final round but his American playing partner started poorly, dropping shots on the third and fourth holes in what proved a three-over par round containing no birdies. Instead, pressure came from South African Louis Oosthuizen, who shot a round of two under to take the clubhouse lead on seven under. Oosthuizen finished his round moments before Casey and watched on a greenside monitor. Had Casey not made par on 18, a three-way play-off would have followed but the Briton's smart shot from the sand and excellent putt left him a tap in for victory. Casey, who was one over for his final round, added: "In my mind, it was like I was against the world number one - so beat him and I've got it. It turned out to be a very different scenario and I feel so good right now." He had waited more than three years for a victory before edging out Tiger

Woods and Patrick Reed to take last year's title by a single shot and now has three PGA Tour wins. England's former world number one Luke Donald declared himself "delighted" as he finished tied for ninth on four under, four shots off the pace. Donald has made only 10 starts in two seasons because of a back complaint and has not won on the PGA or European Tour since 2012. He was within three shots of the overnight lead, having been bogey-free through the first three rounds. But after making eagle on the opening hole to raise hope, he made bogey on holes two and five, before making double-bogey on holes seven and 11 ending with a two-over-par 73 for the day. "I'm really delighted," said Donald. "It could have gone a bit better today but there were positives. It was a little rust and pressure I hadn't felt in a long time. It's a tough game and it takes time to get back into that groove."
