RAIN STOPS PARADES Easter in Spain is often plagued by bad weather. The heavy rains this year unfortunately coincided with the main religious festival of the year. As people descended on the town to pay their respects and watch the brotherhoods or Cofradías pass by, decisions had to be made as to whether they could go ahead or not. It was decided by the director of the brotherhood groups that organise the processions that la Magna and the solemn procession would be cancelled. The weather warning notices meant that it was too much of a risk to continue to plan for these events to take place. Instead some alternative arrangements were made for those who wanted to continue to mark the day.

Easter processions are a very important time for Catholics in Spain, having a greater importance than the Christmas time celebrations. However, the carrying of the ‘pasos’ is a difficult activity in dry conditions and to continue regardless of the weather would have been to put people at risk. The director of the brotherhoods had remained in close contact with weather forecast centres to take the best advice and to enable those processions that could to continue uninterrupted. However, unfortunately, the situation did not improve over the weekend. The situation of high alert continued into Saturday with the procession again taking place inside the church rather than along the streets as usual.

The Inmaculada church was kept open for those who wanted to pay their respects to the different ‘pasos’ that are carried during the procession. A prayer vigil also took place between 8.30pm and 9.30pm infront of the Nuestro Padre Jeús Yacente. These decisions were not taken lightly as the

However, so bad was the weather and with the town in a state of emergency, even this could not be attended by many people. This will certainly be an Easter to be remembered for all the wrong reasons. Suzanne O’Connell

And it rained… The weekend was a complete disaster for those hoping for good weather for the Easter processions. Easter is one of the most popular tourist times for Torrevieja but this year those hoping to spend their time on the beach instead found themsevles sheltering inside and counting themselves lucky if they stayed dry. Twelve major routes were closed down to traffic over the weekend. Motorists were warned to stay indoors and not venture out on journeys unless they were for an emergency. Some did not take this advice and ended up stranded in their cars on the flooded streets. It wasn’t only the rain but strong gusts of wind made conditions even more unpleasant and dangerous. In 48 hours 200 square litres of rain had fallen, a total that represents around 70% of the rain expected across the year. It has been devastating for shops and businesses who were keen to attract additional trade over the Easter weekend. Many were unable to open their doors and if they did had very few customers coming through them. Many roads were closed including the Delfina Viudes, Cortes Valencianas and the ill-fated CV-905. Not only were the fire brigade in demand from trapped car drivers but also incidents of fallen trees, flooded garages and landslides had them called out. Most affected were the areas of Las Torretas, Doña Inés and Continued on page 5

The state of some of Torrevieja’s schools is causing a great deal of concern. Now it is the turn of the Libertas secondary school to come into the spotlight. In May 2017 the Valencian government ordered the school to close in order for engineers to inspect some cracks that had appeared. Since then, the problems remain and teachers are concerned about the conditions. The foundations of the building were

publicised that repairs would be made last summer but now it looks as though it could be this summer when building work takes place. Torrevieja’s councillor for education, José Hurtado, acknowledged that the work is considered to be a priority by Valencia. IES Libertas provides education for 700 students and the state of the structure is of particular concern as this is

checked previously and it was decided to underpin some parts of it, including a basement area below one of the main teaching sections. It was also decided that use of classrooms on the first and second floor would be suspended as they were above the area being propped up. These were classrooms where students practised science experiments and music. Since then a temporary classroom has also been used for technology. Now the teaching staff are increasingly concerned about the building and the fact that they are teaching in classrooms adjacent to those affected. Originally it was

not an old building. It is not yet 20 years old and the work on it was originally completed by Acciona. This is the group who have been responsible for many activities and construction around the town for the past 30 years. They now continue to manage waste and the cleaning contract. It looks as though increasingly the town’s students could find themselves taught in temporary classrooms whilst long terms solutions are sought for some of the inadequacies of the town’s building stock. FINES FOR BATHING IN THE SALT LAKE The Valencian Government has begun to issue warnings to the effect that fines will be imposed if people are caught bathing in Torrevieja’s salt lake. The salt lake is a popular venue for people with skin conditions or who just want the experience of covering themselves in mud to wash it off again. The mud from the bottom of the lake is supposed to have particular qualities that are beneficial when in contact with the skin. People venture down into the lake, coat themselves in mud and then wash it off in the salt water. Soon they could receive a fine of between €60 to €600 for doing just this. Prior to the fines being imposed the government is publicising the move through an information campaign. A private company will be hired by the salt works to issue warnings and the local police will be able to follow this up with fines. It had been thought that designated areas could have been established where the mud bathing

could still take place but this appears to have been ruled out now. It is claimed that the bathing is both potentially dangerous as well as creating problems in the environment. The area is officially an industrial zone where salt extraction takes place. Machinery is used in this process close to some of the most popular areas for bathing. However real or not the danger might be, it looks as though the salt company, Salins España, is adamant that it wants to retain the area for its own purposes, one of which now includes the spread of salt tourism. Their interest in doing this would also seem to be backed by the town’s plans for the natural parks. However, it has been agreed that there can be a transition period during which people become familiar with the regulations before the fines are imposed. Suzanne O’Connell

Day of dance Torrevieja will celebrate the international day of dance on 27th April. This event is very much about street dance and aims to be as accessible to the public as possible. It takes place in the Piscinas Naturales in the Paseo Maritimo, Juan Aparicio at 5pm. The event entitled ‘VII Maratón de Danza a Pie de Calle’ will bring together a number of different dance schools to demonstrate a variety of dance styles. It will also feature the company Red Fox directed by Cristina Rabasco in a display of contemporary dance. It is advertised as a marathon with dance schools performing back to back at street level. It will include Soul Dance, Raíces, Dharma, the town’s official dance

school, QK, Maria del Ángel, Jacqueline Sánchez and Paya’s. Since 1982, 29th April has been the day allocated across the world to celebrate dance. The date was chosen to commemorate the birthday of JeanGoerges Noverre, the creator of modern ballet. It was established by Unesco and celebrates an art form that spans countries, communities and cultures. The day aims to reach out to the general public and workshops, free classes and open air events are held across the world. Suzanne O’Connell

The oficinas de censo y estadística (padrón office) is due to move into its new premises in calle Maldonado, between the old town hall and the current building. However, there is now concern that there is insufficient room left in the new building for it. The staff from the PROP office have already had to move in and it could be a squeeze to fit in all the departments that were expected to take up residence there. This new town hall building in Torrevieja was originally planned by the PP during their last period of local government. However, a number of difficulties have emerged, the first of which is the lack of space meaning that it will be difficult to fit in the other departments that were planned including that of the padrón office and IT services. Altogether €450,000 has been invested in their new home. Some buildings had to be demolished first and then a brand new building constructed. The bill includes €50,000 for demolition, €32,000 for drafting the project and €312,000 for carrying it out. Added to this are the costs of delays of €56,000. The building might be brand new but already there are some structural problems. The front is made of glass and those taking their positions inside have had to plaster it with posters to prevent the sun from shining on them as they work. The PROP office staff were the first to move in as they had to relocate quickly from their existing premises in February due to difficulties with the rental payment

at their old premises. A court had ordered that they could be evicted from their base in calle Bazán and before they were they made the move slightly prematurely. The padrón office also desperately needs to move from its current premises in calle Unión Musical Torrevejense. Now fifteen PROP administrators are stationed on the ground floor of the building serving the public in full view of those outside. When the staff of the padrón office move in there will be another 15 who must be found places alongside them. A move that is hard to visualise looking at the current layout. In the windows it already announces the presence of the padrón service, which hasn´t moved yet. Alongside these signs are the thirty or so large maps showing the city of Valencia which have been stuck on the windows to allow those inside to get on with their work. The new building was intended to cut down on the monthly rental fees that the town spends to house its municipal departments. It costs €3,000 a month for the premises rented for the padrón office; a bill that is still being paid. The PROP office rental payment is now more than one year in arrears. The relocation nightmare for the town hall doesn’t stop there. They are also opening the new Museo de la Semana Santa which is still suffering from a lack of electricity supply. This new building has cost the town more than six million euros and will also house the Museo del Mar y de la Sal. Suzanne O’Connell

Repopulating the dunes The mediterranean landscape used to be populated not only with pine trees but juniper forests too. The semi-arid climate was perfect for the juniper trees to flourish. Now efforts are being made to bring back the junipers to the dunes in the Torrevieja region. The opportunity to do this was not intentional. Space for the replanting of juniper trees has come due to an arson attack on the pine trees in the area. Five thousand square metres of pines were cleared in this way leaving it free for the new trees to be planted instead. The young trees are being planted thanks to a combined effort between Torrevieja’s environmental department, Agamed the water company and members of the Southeast naturalists association (ANSE). Altogether fifty junipers (Juniperus macrocarpa) have been planted. This species, although originally native to the area has been hard

to find more recently. Originally the area was covered with juniper during the Middle Ages but now only 20 hectares remains in the area of the Molino del Agua and Lo Ferrís. Along with the 50 junipers some other species have been planted all with the aim of rejuvenating this area and restoring it to how it used to be. Councillor Fanny Serrano, councillor for the environment, is a keen promoter of this project. To help the trees settle in, irrigation has been organised but this will be removed once the trees are more established. The seedlings have been provided by Devesa-Albufera from Valencia. Other actions being carried out to protect this area include the planting of 1,600 seedlings of different species and the removal of invasive plants. Areas have also been fenced in order to protect seedlings that have been placed there. Suzanne O’Connell

Four years later in 1930 it was decided to move the Barcelona Book Fair to the 23rd April as this was the day that coincided with the death of both Cervantes and William Shakespeare. Now this day is celebrated across the world as a tribute to writers and their books.

International student cards available The councillor for youth, Victor Ferrández has announced that Torrevieja’s youth information centre (CIAJ) will issue three different types of international youth cards. These will be in addition to the Albergue Card which young people can already obtain if they want to stay at a discounted rate in one of the 300 youth hostels across Spain and more than 4,000 across the world. There are three different types of international cards. First is the ‘International Student Card’ which you can obtain from being 12 years old to any age providing the applicant is engaged in some kind of study at university, school or language academy. The cards provide you with discounts on rail travel, fast food,

The second is the ‘International Teacher’s Card’ which can be requested by any teacher regardless of the centre where he or she teaches. Finally there is the ‘Carnet Joven Internacional’ which is aimed at young people between the ages of 14 and 30 years old. The cards are available at a cost of nine euros each and can be obtained from the CIAJ building on the Paseo Juan Aparicio. The cards are recognised by UNESCO. FAMILY ARRESTED FOR FORGED PASSPORTS Workers of an airline company alerted the police to their suspicion that a family of six people were trying to travel with forged passports. The family were of Iraqi origin and were attempting to fly from Alicante-Elche airport to the UK with forged Bulgarian passports. The attempt was made earlier this month when the National Police were alerted about the family who were at one of the ticket-sales windows. One

of those with a forged passport was less than eighteen years old. Altogether six passports had been presented but they were all forged with one page in each of them having been tampered with. The police arrested the five for the crime of forgery and they were later released on charges. The five taken into custody were all between the ages of 19 and 69. The minor was not charged. Additional opening day for supermarkets The councillor for commerce, Manuela Osuna, has announced that on 29th April the shopping centres and large stores can open their doors to the public. This is a day in addition to the ones that larger premises can open as part of their annual quota. Permission had to be sought from the Valencian government. The day 29th April is the local festival of San Vicente and also forms a ‘puente’ or a bridge which means that the town could be flooded with people enjoying their Easter breaks. Carrefour had originally asked for the day to be one where trading was allowed and the Councillor Osuna has pointed out that it is important, therefore that

services are available for tourists and residents. Following the request a notice was given out to different associations around the town to gauge their feelings about the requested opening. As almost everyone was in agreement, with only three being against, it has been given the go ahead. If the shops had not been able to open their doors in Torrevieja the concern is that shoppers would simply have gone elsewhere. In addition to this extra day of opening the major supermarkets and shopping centres in Torrevieja will also be open on Good Friday, 19th April; Easter Sunday 21st April; Easter Monday 22nd April and Sunday 28th April. Suzanne O’Connell

Escape room activities The department of social welfare in Torrevieja has announced two ‘escape room’ activities aimed at young people to draw attention to the inequality between men and women. Escape rooms are fun activities where people have to solve a crime or a puzzle in order to break free from the room. They have become a popular leisure activity, particularly amongst young people. Now the town hall has become involved in providing escapes of their own to highlight inequality and the issue of violence against women. The first scenario is called ‘Trapped in Science’ with an announcement that a dangerous virus has escaped and the population has been contaminated. Those participating have an hour to find the cure. In

order to do this participants must enlist the help of female scientists who have been important throughout history. This escape room activity is aimed at children from 8 to 14 years old. The second scenario is called ‘The disappearance’ and participants are provided with a tablet and a key to help them investigate the disappearance of a young girl. They must become detectives and use the tablet to help find out what happened. This second activity is aimed at adolescent boys and girls and young people in order to raise awareness of violence against women. All the sessions are free of charge and take place from April 24th. Camping over Easter - another washout It is a traditional way of spending the Easter holiday. Many families like to camp in Lo Albentosa park in La Mata and enjoy their days off together. Such is the demand for this every year that the local council in Torrevieja must limit the numbers of people doing this and families must apply for the right to camp there over this period. The councillor for parks, Domingo Soler informed a press conference that 1,450 requests had been approved and it was expected that 350 tents would be

erected over the weekend. However, the final number could be even more than had the weather conditions been right. In preparation for the massive influx of people a clean up campaign was launched including the removal of pruning and general cleaning. ‘Everything had been prepared by the department,’ according to the announcement by councilor Soler. Those wanting to camp overnight there had to declare that they would be responsible for any damage they caused

that they wouldn’t try to make an electrical connection to the public lighting and that they would respect the trees and green areas, complying with all requirements. They must not disturb any vegetation or trees, remove their rubbish and not light any fires. Of course, with the washout weekend, the planning and preparation proved not to be necessary. Rather than camping most people were happy to stay in doors out of the rain. Suzanne O’Connell

GBP / EUR UPDATE Brexit was less of an influence on the pound this week; the postponement of Article 50 for six months means there is less urgency around the issue, and the parliamentary recess means there is little news on developments. This left a greater focus on the ecostats than has been seen in recent months and the spectre of Brexit still hovered behind some. Rightmove's index of house asking prices, was 1.1% higher on the month but 0.1% down from a year ago. “Brexit uncertainty” was cited as the reason that house prices may be weighed down from their usual spring buoyancy. The job numbers created a burst of optimism before the pound once again settled; even the lowest unemployment rate since 1975 at 3.9% and the highest participation rate of 76.1% being the joint highest on record couldn’t carry the pound for long. While basic average earnings were 3.4% higher on the year – or 1.5% when adjusted for inflation – experts noted that the increase in employment could be due more to the fact that more older women are working due to the fact that the pension age was raised, rather than specific employment growth. In addition, average earnings have declined from 3.5% last month. The Office of National Statistics (ONS) announced that inflation remained stable at 1.9%. This was against a forecast of 2%, the rate at which the Bank of England (BoE) targets inflation, and this eases the pressure on the BoE to raise interest rates from the 0.75% that they have been at since August 2018. As the BoE remains cautious about the as-yet unknown impact of Brexit, the numbers from the ONS were good news, allowing the central bank to stay their course. In

general this week, the pound has been trending lower; there appears to be a sense of apathy as the shorter week for the Easter break, combined with the lack of news about Brexit, meant there was nothing to drive sterling. There have been short bursts of gains during the week, but in general all these were given back to create an overall downward motion. The euro has been making gains, although largely for technical reasons rather than as a reflection of the data coming from the continent. Industrial production fell 0.2% in February across Europe and was 0.3% lower on the year. While this wasn’t the best news, analysts had predicted a fall between 0.6% and 1% and so the euro got a boost thanks to the fact that the results were not as bad as expected. In the same week, business sentiment also gave the euro a boost. The ZentrumfürEuropäischeWirtschaftsforsc hung, or ZEW, reported a vigorous jump for economic sentiment in Germany and pan-Euroland. Both readings were about seven points higher, at 3.1 and 4.5 respectively. This gave the euro some momentum and it made gains against the pound and held steady against the US dollar. Further gains were made after inflation across the Eurozone met forecast the forecast of 1.4% in March down from 1.5% in February and well below the European Central Bank’s (ECB) 2% target. This means that there isn’t likely to be a hike in interest rates on the horizon and together with the overall slowdown across Europe, it’s unlikely that the euro will make major headway but certainly made gains this week due to meeting forecast and delivering slightly better than expected results.

Olympic Gold medalist visits Torrevieja This week saw Olympic Gold medallist Sonia O’Sullivan visit Torrevieja and spend time catching up with Irish Olympic Coach Paddy Fay, our exclusive photo shows the pair catching up and reminiscing over old times. Sonia O'Sullivan (born 28 November 1969) is an Irish former track and field athlete. She won a gold medal in the 5000 metres at the 1995 World Championships, and a silver medal in the 5000 metres at the 2000 Olympic Games. Her 2000m world record of 5:25.36, set in 1994 stood until 2017. O'Sullivan first came to prominence when winning the

1500m at the 1991 Universiade, before going on to finish fourth in the 3000m final at the 1992 Olympic Games. She then won a silver medal in the 1500m at the 1993 World Championships. She was the favourite for the 5000m title at the 1996 Olympic Games but dropped out of the final due to illness. As well as her 1995 World title, she won three gold medals at the European Championships, in the 3000m (1994), 5000m (1998) and 10,000m (1998), and is a two-time World Cross Country Champion. O'Sullivan won silver medals in the 5000m and 10'000m at the 2002 European Championships,

and competed at her fourth Olympic Games in 2004. She is known for her dramatic kick, clocking 28-second final 200m splits in some of her races.

Russian plane charged €20,000 to park at Alicante airport If you thought airport car parks were pricey, be grateful you’re not parking a plane. A Russian Antonov An-124 is being charged €1,000 a day to stay at the Alicante-Elche airport on the Costa Blanca. The Volga-Dnepr Airlines cargo plane, which arrived from the Ivory Coast on 28th March, has already filled Spanish airport operator AENA’s pockets to the tune of more than €20,000.

Easter drinking clamp down

The Councillor for Health, Noelia Grao, has announced that the Department of Health, in collaboration with the Community Prevention of Addictive Behaviour in Orihuela (UPCCA), has launched, for the first time, a campaign aimed at preventing alcohol consumption during the Easter Week celebrations – Semana Sanat 2019. While it is true that it this celebration is predominantly a religious festival, where the general trend is one recollection, reflection and respect, and Councillor said "we must also take into account that this is leisure time, the five-day bridge between holidays and the weekend means that Easter parties can

lead to the inappropriate consumption of addictive substances”. The UPCCA representative explained that according to the data of the DGT, in the Holy Week campaign of 2018 30 people died on Spanish roads and that the number of people killed in traffic accidents who had consumed alcohol and other drugs exceeded 40 percent. And although this holiday has seen a reduction of 71 percent the number of deaths due to traffic accidents in the last 12 years, the goal is always that there is not a single person who does not return home after the celebrations are over. Likewise, the five-day bridge and Easter school holidays

generate a lot of free time for the adolescent population, exponentially increasing the possibilities of irresponsible consumption of alcohol and other dangerous substances in teenagers and young adults. Councillor Grao explained that under the slogan "In Holy Week alcohol is not necessary" the campaign intends to raise awareness of the fact it is never necessary to consume alcohol in order to enjoy the holidays. The campaign is mainly being communicated through digital media with a poster, practical recommendations and a video, specially created for this purpose, which can be found on the pages of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube of the UPCCA of Orihuela.

The plane, which is charged according to size and length of stay, still does not have a new journey planned, according to airport sources. The massive aeroplane is usually used to move large loads because it has a capacity of up to 150 tonnes, and has come to Alicante-Elche to transport boats and helicopters on other

occasions—but on 19th February the stop was only for a few hours and so avoided the

I am treated so badly

I feel used

I am 19. My fiancee of three years promised she’d stop texting her ex. I had my suspicions and caught her out countless times, each time she promised to end it. She insisted things had never gone beyond talking. I confronted her and we had a huge row, when she finally admitted she’d been seeing this guy behind my back, and I am eaten up with hurt. I love her and still want to marry her. I know I have been treated badly, but I don’t think I can live without her.

I am the person whom everyone seems to turn to in times of need. I rather want a life of my own and to do things that I want to do sometimes. I have noticed when I want to do something specific, or need help there’s no one willing to stand by me. I had a spell in hospital recently and no one came to visit or called on me at home, when I really needed help.

You got together young, and you may not always feel this way. We change as we grow older and realise that a successful relationship takes more than just love. It seems this girl has been given many chances but cannot stop seeing the ex. You are coming second to this other man at the moment, and perhaps always will. The thought of giving her up is intolerable, yes. However, as hard as ending things might be, is this how you want to feel for the rest of your life?

You know you need to start thinking of yourself more, so be brave and do it. You could even pre-empt the situation and let those who you feel take you for granted know that you have plans. Here’s a tip, when you are asked face to face to help, try saying that you will ‘check your diary’ and come back to them, then message them later and say you are busy - it will give you more time to say no, and you won’t feel like you are put on the spot.

Spain to inspect top monuments Spain hardest hit in social in light of Notre Dame blaze media crash Minister for culture José Guirão has announced a full healthcheck on Spain's main monuments in light of the fire which devastated Paris' Notre Dame cathedral last Monday night. Although the cause of the inferno which engulfed one of Europe's best-loved visitor attractions is not yet known, Spain wants to exercise caution in case the blaze was due to integral factors of the structure, such as the electrical wiring or even wooden elements exposed to glass in direct sunlight. Guirão says that whilst Spain's cathedrals are 'in theory' protected against any such disaster, the government wants to 'try to avoid these types of tragedy'. "The most potentiallydangerous element is old electrical installations, so we need to check these and take extreme care in our reconstruction efforts, because one person's slip-up could provoke a tragedy," Guirão argues. For Notre Dame, the tragedy was in the destruction of the cathedral itself rather than human - all visitors were evacuated immediately. The main structure itself has been saved, as well as the artefacts of major importance inside, although the tallest spire

crashed down in a dramatic explosion of flames, and most of the roof was reduced to ashes. Parisians, tourists, expats and students who witnessed the disaster say they wished they had not had to see it, and hundreds of onlookers were in floods of tears. Elsewhere around the globe, anyone who has ever visited or lived in the city is broken-hearted at the horrendous incident. Guirão says he will contact his counterpart in France, Franck Riester, to offer 'any help necessary' in the reconstruction. "Although the French have plenty of resources, Notre Dame is a symbol of the European Union, of art and culture, an extraordinary and universal monument, and we should all be there to support the French through this," Guirão says. Numerous other Spanish politicians have sent their condolences to the French government, including Spain's president Pedro Sánchez who called it 'a catastrophe for France, Spain and Europe'. "The flames have wiped out 850 years of history, architecture, painting and sculpture. It will be difficult to forget this. France can count on us to help it get back the greatness of its heritage," Sánchez tweeted the following morning. Foreign affairs minister Josep Borrell said: "Paris has survived

war again and again, and it's devastating to see such an important part of our historical heritage in Europe, the land of cathedrals, being lost in flames. Paris is a huge chapter of my personal life, and I share the pain of the French people."

Royal support The Royal Household tweeted its support for France and the people of Paris, saying that it 'is with and will be with' the country and that it was confident that Notre Dame would 'rise from its ashes'. French president Emmanuel Macron has announced an international appeal for funds to restore the cathedral, which he says will take about five years. Giant French corporations including L'Oréal and Louis Vuitton Moët-Hennessy, international firms such as Apple and the petrol company Total, and some of France's wealthiest families including the Décaux, the Bouygues and Mexican actress Salma Hayek's husband François-Henri Pinault have donated eight- and ninefigure sums towards Notre Dame's reconstruction. At the time of writing, France's richest and international companies had helped the pot to swell to €750 million.

Spain was one of the worstaffected countries by the recent social media crash, which saw Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp go down all at once. Much of the east and southeast and far north-west of England, The Netherlands, northern Belgium, central Europe to the east of France and southeast of Germany as far as Hungary, the Istanbul and Ankara areas of Turkey, patches of southern Portugal, the Cairo and northern Sinai parts of Egypt, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and parts of the USA were affected. But the whole of Spain and Italy, except the south coast of the latter, were a complete social media blank from around 12.30 mainland Spanish time until midafternoon.

British pensioner jumps off a bridge in Javea

Connections started to reappear at around 3pm in some areas of Spain, but it was not until nightfall that they were all back online. The Instagram news feed was not working, Facebook's server was not responding and it was not possible to log in, and WhatsApp users reported problems with sending and receiving messages. It was exactly a month ago when the last worldwide failure

of all three social media occurred - they stopped working at 10pm mainland Spain time on 13th March and remained out of action for the longest time in their history. Back then, the firm founded by Mark Zuckerberg attributed the shutdown to a 'change in server configuration', and insisted it had nothing to do with a hack attack. As yet, the reason for the most recent breakdown is not known.

An 84-year-old British woman has committed suicide after jumping off a bridge over the dry riverbed in Javea. Concerned social media users spotted three police cars and an ambulance racing to Javea port just after 7pm last Tuesday evening. These were closely followed by another two ambulances and two fire engines, according to eyewitness sources, before the scene was cleared around 9.15pm.

“The woman committed suicide by plunging off a bridge above the dry riverbed,” a spokesperson for the Guardia Civil confirmed the following morning. Javea Town Hall confirmed the woman jumped from a bridge on the Avenida de Augusta where it crosses the Gorgos riverbed. “She lived in Javea right next to Avenida de Augusta, and had lived here for many years,” a spokesperson said.

Swimming Pools Versus Hot Tubs

W

hat’s better, a swimming pool or hot tub? Which will add more value to your home? Which do you think? There’s no single rule for calculating how much installing a hot tub will increase the value of a home, if it does at all. However, this really does depend on a few factors. A freestanding hot tub, sits above ground. These are the most popular of tubs around, as they can comfortably fit into various sized homes and gardens. This type can add value to your home, depending on size and condition, of course. If it’s a portable hot tub, i.e. inflatable, these are considered personal property, therefore add no value to the house. A permanent hot tub sits in the ground, much like a swimming pool. This type may increase your home value, although generally not as much as you had invested in the tub originally. If you’re weighing up whether or not to build a pool, a private swimming pool will raise your home value, more than a hot tub. But not every garden is big enough

to have one installed. Depending on size, on average a private swimming pool can add anything from €15,000 upwards, to your homes value. You need to make sure though, that you’re not paying more than the added value, to have the pool built. Only homebuyers can truly decide how much a swimming pool, or hot tub will add to the quality of their life. Swimming pools make the hot months more bearable, and that reason alone could be enough to justify owning a private pool. Whereas hot tubs offer significantly more health benefits.

Tax deduction for non-residents who rent homes in Spain

The European Commission has opened an infringement procedure against Spain on the grounds that it discriminates against expats who rent their homes. This is because at the moment non-EU residents in Spain cannot apply the 60 percent tax reduction for the net income obtained by renting a habitual residence in the Income Tax for Non-residents (Impuesto sobre la Renta de los No Residentes or IRNR). This is seen to be unfair because the tax return for rental income in Spain is a benefit that is enjoyed by Spanish taxpayers. This is a difference in treatment between Spanish residents and non-residents living in the country that makes no sense and is discriminatory. Spain gives a better tax treatment to residents in Spain who obtain income from renting out property, compared with non-residents who receive the same income. In the view of the European

Commission, this difference in treatment unduly restricts the free movement of capital, which is protected by Article 63 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU). That is why the EU has given Spain two months to change the tax rules to make things fairer for nonresidents. Otherwise, it could lead to a court case and sanctions in the European Court of Justice (ECJ).

What are the stages of the EU infringement procedure? At this stage, the EC has only sent Spain a letter of formal notice granting it a period of two months in which to give a detailed reply to the alleged infringement. If Spain’s reply is not convincing, Europe will send back a reasoned opinion, explaining why it considers that Spanish law violates European Union law. At that time, a formal request will be made for Spain to

comply with EU Law, granting Spain a period (normally two months) to report on the measures adopted. In the event that Spain ignores this warning, Brussels will be able to bring the country before the ECJ in a legal trial, something that is expected to happen shortly with the penalties that Spain currently applies to the Modelo 720 form.

What should non-residents do in the meantime? Salcedo assures us that the beginning of this infringement procedure opens the door for non-residents in Spain to request that their self-assessments be corrected if they did not apply the tax deduction. And this is even before the right to request such rectification is granted. It should also be pointed out that the criterion of the Central Economic-Administrative Tribunal (Tribunal EconómicoAdministrativo Central or TEAC) is to allow non-residents to apply the tax reduction, even if it was not included in their tax assessment at the time it was declared. However, nonresidents of the EU can only claim these tax returns for their back taxes as long as the Hacienda Treasury has not initiated checks that affect the declared income

Property renovation There are many home improvements and changes we would all like to make to our houses but getting an idea of how much they cost is sometimes tricky. How much does it cost to change the bathtub for a shower tray, to paint your house or to make the built-in wardrobes you’ve been dreaming of? Although the price will depend on the workman you hire to do it for you and where in Spain you live, as a general rule painting the walls can cost between 4 and 8 euro per metre squared (between 0.37 and 0.75 euro per square foot), depending on the type of paint, while changing the bath for a shower base can cost between 1,200 and 1,400 euro.

Painting the house The budget will obviously depend on what the painter charges. They will base their

pricing on things like the height of the ceilings, the condition of the walls and even which floor the apartment is on – it’s not the same for them to take all their materials to a ground floor flat than to a top-floor room in a building where there’s no lift. Normally, if the wall doesn’t have too many imperfections and they don’t have to do any extra preparatory work like plastering, painting a house will cost you between 4 and 8 euro/m2 (0.37-0.75 euro/sq ft).

Changing the bathtub for a shower tray This is a relatively easy home improvement to do and will give you more space in the bathroom, which is especially good for the elderly or those with mobility problems. What’s more, having a shower instead of a bath will mean a significant saving on your

water bills. A project of this type should be ready in four or five days at the most. In terms of the price, it will be around 1,2001,400 euro. That price should include a glass screen, new taps and, of course, a new shower base.

Custom built-in wardrobes A made-to-measure wardrobe is the perfect way to make the most of the full height and width of a space, whereas a standard wardrobe will always leave some unused spaces. Above all, think carefully about how you will set it out to make the most of the room you’ve got. As for the price, it will range from 700-800 euro for a small, two-door cabinet that is lined inside with melamine, going up to 1,700-1,900 euro for a wardrobe with three compartments.

Mel B 'pushing Spice Girls to accept elusive residency in Las Vegas' They've been busy rehearsing for their highly anticipated comeback tour and it is believed the Spice Girls have landed a residency in Las Vegas, with Mel pushing her band-mates to accept the offer. The singers have reportedly been offered a deal at The Colosseum in Caesars Palace to perform and could potentially rake in a lot of cash. Las Vegas has already seen huge icons such as Elton John, Robbie Williams and Celine Dion secure residencies. Mel B is said to be keen for the girls to take up the offer because it would be close to her home city of Los Angeles.

Rescue ship says Spain blocking aid to refugees in Greece A Basque fishing vessel converted into a migrant rescue boat called the Aita Mari is having problems going to the Greek island of Lesbos, where it aims to deliver humanitarian aid to the thousands of refugees concentrated there. On its way through the Strait of Gibraltar, the Spanish Maritime Authority warned the crew, first over the radio and then by email, that it had to return to a Spanish port: “You do not have permission to cross the Mediterranean. Before leaving Spanish territorial waters… you must request a dispatch indicating the port and destination area, and detailing the activity you plan to carry out.” Since January, the Spanish Maritime Authority, which answers to the Public Works Ministry, has been stopping this vessel from going into Libyan waters to rescue migrants and refugees in distress. The non-profit organisation which owns the Aita Mari, Humanitarian Maritime Rescue, accepted the order, and instead of rescuing migrants, decided to head toward the Greek island of Lesbos to deliver more than 40 crates of medical supplies, diapers and infant formula. The boat got authorisation for this mission at a port in Lisbon, Portugal. However, the Spanish maritime authority has demanded that the boat return to a Spanish port to obtain new authorisation. A ministry spokesperson said that

the permission granted in Portugal is not valid. “As an NGO vessel dedicated to rescue missions it needs to apply for a dispatch at a Spanish port specifying its exact destination and the activity it plans to carry out.” The organisation fears the permission will not be granted. “With this message, Spain is going against the decision of the Portuguese Maritime Authority,” they explain. “The restrictions on rescue missions cannot affect the ship’s other humanitarian tasks.” The Humanitarian Maritime Rescue is registered as a humanitarian organization in Greece and has been collaborating with the country’s authorities in assisting migrants and refugees since 2015. Spain’s position on Spanish

migrant rescue vessels did a Uturn at the beginning of last year. The decision to block the Aita Mari in January followed the same rationale that had immobilized the NGO vessel Open Arms in Barcelona 10 days before. The Spanish government halted humanitarian missions in the Central Mediterranean after Italy and Malta closed their ports, which forced Spain to accept an influx of migrants. After first opening its ports to around 450 migrants assisted by the Open Armsin the second half of 2018, maritime authorities decided to block the Aita Mari’s mission on the grounds that the vessels do not meet the security requirements needed to undertake long journeys with large numbers of people on board.

Brextension until October is reasonable, says Spanish PM Spain’s president Pedro Sánchez believes the ‘Brextension' until 31st October is 'reasonable' and is 'confident' Theresa May's government will remain 'loyal' until the UK finally leaves the European Union. An extraordinary Council of Europe meeting went on until the early hours of this morning (Thursday) after which it was agreed that a longer extension would be given for the UK to achieve agreement on how to leave the bloc, but with the option of departing earlier than the end of October if Mrs May is able to secure support for her deal before this date. The 'flextension' was proposed to prevent the uncertainty of a series of short extensions being requested and the remaining EU-27 having to vote on them each time they were sought, and the date was chosen because this is when the European Commission is due for 'renewal' and all national leaders will be required to elect members. Sánchez reiterated his conviction that Brexit is the result of public misinformation and the rise of the far right. "The great lesson we should all learn from everything that's happening in the UK is that when a decision based on lies is placed in the hands of the people, it unfortunately forces the British public into a dead end, as we're seeing; the country has been unable to

govern this situation," Sánchez told reporters as he left the Council of Europe meeting. But he stresses that the next step is up to the UK. "The ball remains in the British Parliament's court, and all scenarios remain possible - a no-deal Brexit could still happen," he said. Like the rest of the Union, Sánchez said Spain's priority and its loyalty is to the 27 member States and to preserving their unity, rather than to a member which has chosen to leave. "And this unity has been achieved," he believes.

NEW PARKS FORCHILDREN Two children’s play areas have been revamped in Torrevieja. The work was announced by the councillor for parks, Domingo Soler, The first of the parks is ‘Parque María’ which is in the south of the town and occupies a space of around 4,200 square metres. This park comprises of turf, date palms, shrubs and flowers. The park’s existing play area has been improved with seats, bins, cushioned flooring and artificial grass. Some new

play equipment has been installed including a slide, swings, hopscotch and an area for playing pelota. The second park is ‘Parque El Catín’. This is also located in the south of the town in the urbanisation Los Altos. It has an area of 4,500 square metres and comprises shrubs, date palms and flowering plants. This park is very close to the intersection of the N332 and calle

Monteèrdido and part of the plan was to enclose it with a fence to protect those using it. In order to do this special licences had to be obtained. ‘The idea,’ explained councillor Soler, ‘is to give families something that will contribute to their welfare and enjoyment whilst also improving the environment and the quality of life of those living close by.’ Suzanne O’Connell

Students undertake citizenship survey A group of GCSE students from a private academy in San Miguel de Salinas are doing a project for their citizenship exam and need your help. With Brexit appearing to be the only topic of discussion across all age groups, these young people want to have a say in their future. The voting age in the UK is 18, and people who have not lived in the UK for more than 15 years were not allowed to vote in the Brexit referendum despite the impact that it will have on their futures. To achieve this, these nine students are campaigning for the voting age on a single-issue referendum to be lowered to 16. They have lobbyed MPs, held meetings locally, carried out surveys and set up an e-petition to garner support. Whilst many people may argue that 16 and 17 year olds do not have the maturity to vote on such a major issue these students feel passionately that they do, and

should be allowed a say on something that will affect them for many more years than the older generation. The students ask that readers of the Costa Blanca People take a minute of your time to take part in a 5 question survey to help them gather support and hopefully get good grades in their upcoming exams! The group had tried to set up a petition on GOV.co.uk but have been denied and various MPs have refused to help. Therefore, if you could spare a couple minutes to follow this link of their survey, they would be exceedingly grateful. Visit https://es.surveymonkey.com/r/BSM6H3C The students attend the O’Brien language academy in San Miguel de Salinas. My Fair Lady A review by Suzanne Stokes

The Javea Players brought their current production of My Fair Lady to Rojales Theatre on Saturday night – and what a treat it was. Nothing amateur about this company – it was professional, top quality entertainment from first to last. Because people tend to forget to say ‘well done’ to those they don’t see on stage, but upon whom everything depends, I will start by saying the production was excellent. A simple, but ingenious set, clever lighting, dazzling costumes and the sound quality in a large theatre worked very well. Direction by Cherry Caban, musical direction be Aileen Lightfoot and choreography by Graciela Kaplan brought the whole thing together. The musicians, Heather Butcher, Kirsty Glen and Paul Kears were excellent, and it was lovely to have live music for the show rather than recordings. The ensemble acting and singing by the maids, bystanders and crowds at Covent Garden was seamless. The show was produced by Tony Cabban And so to the cast. All of them deserve an accolade because they worked so well together. The production had humour, pathos, and an underlying message about the attitudes to class and to women in Victorian England. But of course it’s remembered for the wonderful music by Lerner and Loewe based on Pygmalion by

George Bernard Shaw. I’m sure Shaw would have been delighted to see his characters so beautifully brought to life. Cath Reid-Martin as Eliza Doolittle was sublime. Professionally trained, she brought so much to the character, both in terms of acting and singing (what a voice!), moving from the flower girl with the hideous vowels to the confused young woman at the end, who could

speak perfectly, but couldn’t work out what her new role in life might be. Henry Higgins (Roger Brown) was equally brilliant as the phonetics expert who transforms Eliza from gutter snipe to a lady - trampling so badly on her feelings along the way. He had the character absolutely nailed – and the songs were SO difficult but he never a missed word. Colonel Pickering wonderfully played by Robin Baxter, was a foil to the brash and thoughtless Higgins – a kinder, benevolent ‘gentleman’ – an observer and the voice of reason. Alfred Doolittle, Eliza’s father was a delight. Played by Tony Sim, you had to love the scruffy individual – a Del Boy of his day, but with an honesty that eventually pays off when he comes into money – but then he doesn’t know what to do with it! Alistair Wallace as the handsome but feckless Freddy Eynsford-Hill, Rosemary Brown as Mrs Pearce, Jane Dye as Mrs Higgins, Pauline McGough as Mrs Eynsford-Hill and Professor Zoltan Karpathy played by Mike Harvey all deserve great praise for completing the cast. The Javea Players have been rehearsing the show for 6 months and it sold out in their local theatre. I’m sure they’re glad of a rest now, but we hope they’ll soon be back in Rojales!

UK's most popular takeaway food A Channel 5 documentary has ranked the Britain's favourite takeaway options, and the results are surprising. Chinese food was crowned the country's favourite cuisine, followed by Indian food and then fish and chips. And despite our obsession with pizza, the Italian cuisine only came fourth in the line-up, followed by American-inspired burgers. The show 'Britain's Favourite Takeaway' followed the same principle as previous documentary 'Britain's Favourite crisps', and ranked 20 of the country's most beloved dishes. Delving into the origins of our favourite foods, it revealed that the first ever Chinese restaurant in the UK opened its doors in 1908, and immigration fluxes from Hong Kong in the 1950s and 1960s made the food even more sought after. Interestingly, the documentary revealed that the fortune cookies that often accompany a Chinese takeaway are in fact a Japanese invention, popularised in the US. Elsewhere it revealed that one of the most ordered Indian dishes is Tikka Masala - but its origin is disputed to this day - and it can be traced back to both India and Bangladesh. The UK's beloved fish and chips came third, which might surprise some, as they have been a British staple for the past 150 years. The iconic dish was deemed so important to moral during the Second World War that they were never rationed, the documentary revealed. Fish and chips were originally wrapped in newspapers, but the practice has now almost completely ceased because on grounds of hygiene. Coming in at fourth was pizza, which originated from Naples where it was popularised as an affordable and quick dinner option. Meanwhile burgers came in fifth position, with the most popular options seen to be McDonald's and Burger King. McDonald's came to the UK in 1974 and now

serves a staggering 3.5 million people all over the country.

Coming in at number seven was chicken, with the show revealing that the majority of the chicken shops in London are named after one particular US state: Tennessee! In seventh place is a night-out staple, the kebab, with the meaty dish managing to be be Dutch/German-style Turkish, Greek and Arab cuisine all at the same time. The dish in eighth position is easy to make and even easier to order: sandwiches. The best meal to get on-the-go when you're in an hurry is famously named after the fourth Earl of Sandwich, an English nobleman who lived during the 18th century. Lord Sandwich is said to have eaten food in this form so as not to leave the gaming table. And one meal you might want to take time to enjoy is a savoury Thai, which placed ninth in the ranking. According to Thai Square, food is such a priority in Thailand that locals might ask you whether you've eaten a mere seconds after being introduced. The tenth dish can be both easy and controversial - especially when served in its vegan form - it's the sausage! Enjoyed plain, with chips or as a hot dog, this one is sure to please the greediest among us.

Ole Bull delights diners N

estled on the top floor of the Los Dolses Commercial Centre, the recently opened Ole Bull restaurant is already impressing discerning diners and proving to be a local topic of conversation...we sent Mireille and John along to see what all the fuss is about. Opened by former Costa Blanca People Culinary Awards Chef of the Year Robert Johansen, Ole Bull is named after Ole Bornemann Bull the world renowned Norwegian virtuoso violinist and composer. The restaurant is impressive to the eye, with a stylish and spacious

interior with a pleasant and welcoming atmosphere. Despite the fact that it was a Tuesday evening at 7.30pm most of the tables were busy or reserved and by the time we left there was a table of six braving the cool evening air on the patio – a sure sign of a popular eatery. Another sign of content diners is the ambience of a restaurant and as we were shown to our table there was a happy hum of background conversation and laughter as people enjoyed their evening and the food. The menus offer several options including a

Menu del Dia, a five-course set evening menu (at just 35e) and al a carte – all had mouth watering options but we chose to dine from the al a carte evening menu. As a food lover, I get excited when I read a menu and want to eat almost every dish and we had a tough time making a final choice on all of the courses. I’m already lobbying Robert to forge ahead with his plans for a tasting menu, so I can eat until my heart’s content! The starter options covered meat, fish and soups including: Cauliflower truffle soup, Tatar of fresh Norwegian Salmon with avocado, Carpaccio of beef and salted and dried Duck breast with peaches and caramelised walnuts. I chose grilled fresh scallops with cauliflower crème and black truffle and John opted for the fresh white wine steamed mussels in chilli, garlic and cream. We sipped on a glass of the very enjoyable house white wine (El Gusto by Bodega La Purissima) while we perused the menus and waited for the starters and I have to say the wine was very drinkable. So much so that we had to order another glass to go with the mains...should have ordered the bottle after all. The presentation of dishes at Ole Bull is second-to-none and so when the starters arrived

they looked gorgeous and it was all we could do to wait and take the necessary picture before we dived in - and both dishes lived up to their image. My scallops were huge and perfectly cooked, the cauliflower and truffle crème was subtle and rich making the perfect accompaniment to the delicate sea food. John’s dish was far from subtle with a good hit of chilli and garlic in a sauce that was substantial enough to coat the mussels (rather than being a watery substance lurking at the bottom of the bowl, as is often the case). The mussels weren’t the largest I’ve ever seen, however, they were delicious and absolutely melted in the mouth – not one that was even a

little chewy - and the portion size was hearty. In fact as a lover of spicy food, I would have gladly polished off John’s dish too, but I think I would have had to fight him for it. Once again there was an excellent choice of mains from lamb shank, Duck and beautiful cuts of beef to Icelandic cod loin, Norwegian Salmon and pasta dishes. After several changes of mind I decided on the lamb shank. This is sourced from the North of Spain and cooked low and slow for 16 hours. It’s served on a bed of creamy mash with vegetables and a sauce made of the stock,

honey, rosemary and red wine. John chose the ‘grilled fresh tender Argentinean Black Angus Rib eye steak’ served with a medley of veg and a potato of your choice, which for John was chips (of course). The dishes smelled and looked as delightful as they tasted as we tucked in. The lamb was tender, flavoursome and fell off the bone. A special mention has to go to the wonderful sauce, which was glossy and slightly sticky and tasted divine. The steak was tender, tasty and a good size. It was cooked rare at John’s request and accompanied by an excellent pepper sauce, both being one of the best we’ve had for quite a while. Both dishes were accompanied by a medley of peppers, which went with the meats just as well as the more traditional carrots or broccoli. For desserts we tried the Apple cake served with vanilla ice-cream and the Panna Cotta both of which were gorgeous and tough choice over the pears poached in red wine and the Tiramisu. We have already recommended this restaurant to several friends and planned a return visit so we can work our way through this menu of delights. Definitely one to must on your ´must try’ list. Ole Bull is open 7 days a week from 12noon and the kitchen closes at 11pm. To book your table call 966 764 429.

Reach Out Fashion Show success The recent "Reach Out" Fashion Show at the Marina Bar was again an outstanding success. Organizers David and Lorraine Whitney of Reach Out ‘Shop 2’ together with their team of dedicated helpers ensured the afternoon went along as planned. With raffle, tombola, name the bear and various stalls to delight the crowds the result was a very acceptable €1202 for the charity. Again it was a little like the Oxford Street January Sales as customers jostled for position to get at all the bargain clothing, shoes and bags on sale. Rita and Dave of the Marina Bar together with their staff worked their socks off, serving food and drinks to the hoards of people and once again proved their worth as

47

charitable fund raisers. Their continued book sales for the charity helped raise the final total. Thanks must go to everybody who helped or donated items for the event and a special mention must go to Wendy Lawrenson, who came to see the Fashion Show and ended up being in it due to the illness of one of the models. With half an hour to prepare herself she proved to be a natural and was a perfect fit for the clothing on show. All in all a great afternoon, great atmosphere and a good advert for the shop's next event which is a "Titanic" themed evening meal with prizes, quiz and singer on Thursday the 16th May, again at the Marina Bar. Full details out shortly.

Tech Fact DID YOU KNOW? Glenda via email asks: On my old Windows XP laptop I used to easily set my laptop to an earlier time before the problem started by using System Restore. I have ehad loads of problems with Windows 10 and my printer but I cannot find the old fashion system restore program. Can I still do this in Windows10? Aunty Says: Hello Glenda. You can still use the old style System Restore but Microsoft have made it a little more difficult to find than it was in Windows XP. The easiest way to find it is to click the Windows/Start icon (looks like a flag) and type SYSTEM RESTORE which should bring up the System Restore control panel. You may first need to switch on System Restore by creating a restore point. Elizabeth from Rojales asks: Hi Aunty. For some reason my Google translator has stopped working. When I copy some Spanish text from a document into the Google Translator app on my desktop, it just sits there showing a spinning symbol but nothing happens. I am using Windows 10 and I use Google Chrome to access the Internet. Any ideas? Aunty Says: Hello Elizabeth. I have always accessed the Google Translator via the official Google website

www.translate.google.com which seems to work 100% of the time. Because you are using Google’s Chrome as your browser you can also easily add the translator extension as a permanent fixture (which you can get from the Chrome Web Store) which will allow you to easily and quickly translate a whole webpage using the right mouse button. Steve via email asks: Hi Aunty, I have had a Hotmail address for over 10 years and recently it seems to be called Outlook and I’m getting a lot more dodgy looking emails which get sent to my junk box that are obvious scams and pretending to be from banks. Recently I had one supposedly from The Inland Revenue offering me a tax rebate

but the spelling was so awful it gave it away. I always mark them as spam and then they automatically disappear from my inbox but recently I’m getting concerned that these scammers seem to have more and more of my private personal information so what happens to the emails? Does my email or Internet provider report them? because as they automatically go into my junk inbox I can’t see any way of forward them to the banks etc to alert them as to what is going on. Aunty Says: I’m not sure how Hotmail (Microsoft) deal with their customers’ spam problems Steve but I’m sure there is a setting somewhere that will help you flag and report any particularly nasty emails as spam. In Gmail there is a “report spam” option that will alert Google and hopefully they follow it up and do something about it. Policing this kind of thing is a nightmare but there’s now plenty of cases in the news where companies are getting heavily fined for spamming and abusing people’s private and personal information, but outside of the EU and USA nobody seems to care that much. Email me your questions to auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com and I will see you all next week

Cyclists give cyclists a bad name! In a relationship that seems to have developed into one of almost bitter rivalry, cyclists and other road users seem to be at constant odds. Sweeping statements like, “all cyclists go through red lights”, or, “cyclists think they own the road”, are grossly unfair, but it is true that this happens. Just like cyclists who are in a group riding more than two abreast, or not allowing other traffic to pass, but the reality is, it is only a portion of these road users that give the rest a bad name. It is however important to remember that a bicycle, when on the road, is classed as a vehicle, and therefore the rider is responsible for adhering to almost all of the laws that apply to other vehicles, which means they cannot go through red lights, or consume more than the prescribed limit of alcohol, they can´t wear headphones, and they can´t use their mobile phone whilst riding, amongst many other things. Equally, other road users must respect cycles and accept that they have as much right to use the road as other vehicles. If it´s safe to overtake, then you must

give at least 1.5 metres of space when passing, and if you can´t give than minimum space, then you mustn´t attempt to overtake, as the cycle has a right to be there. Cyclists cannot ride across zebra crossings, because we wouldn´t expect a truck to do

that, and the rider must dismount before they do. When cycling on specially designed cycle paths, riders must note and take appropriate action when they see road signs, which include the ones marked STOP before crossing a main road, for example. By the way, the traffic police do monitor cyclists as well, and, in case you are in any doubt, they do issue fines and sanctions to riders who are caught. The Pegasus equipped helicopters also monitor cyclists to make sure they

are adhering to the law and despite finding that the majority do, the helicopter crew initiate action against those they find who are not obeying the law. If you are curious about fines for cyclists, here are the most common: Not having a bell on your bicycle – 80€ Faulty or no brakes – 80€ Carrying an extra person on the bicycle – 80€ Failing to stop at a traffic light – 200€ Failing to give way at a junction – 200€ Not having lights – 200€ Having too many lights – 200€ Failing to wear high visibility clothing between sunset and sunrise and in poor visibility – 200€ Riding under the influence of alcohol – 500€ Please remember, if you are not a cyclist, is really is only a small group who give the others a bad name. The majority of cyclists do uphold the law. If you´re a cyclist who does flout the law, take note, there are laws that you must adhere to, and you are helping to give everyone a bad name, so please ride with courtesy and respect, in the same way that you hope to be respected.

It looks the same, but... They look similar – steering wheel, foot pedals, displays with numbers on – but the reality is, a most cars differ in the equipment they offer, more so given new technological advances, and so it is important if we get a new car, even if we are just renting it, to get to know what´s where. Though some might not admit it, many of us have accidentally put the windscreen wipers on instead of indicating, or vice versa, because the control stick is on the opposite side to what we are used to, but this might lead to a minor inconvenience in reality, compared to not knowing how some of the other vehicle features work. In recent years, different safety devices such as blind spot detectors, autonomous emergency braking or parking sensors have been incorporated into vehicles, but the amount of information they provide and the number of systems that must be kept under control can also create an increase in the level of distraction whilst driving, especially when there is a lack of real understanding as to what each of the alerts and warnings may display. There are many systems that help make driving safer. Most of them hide behind names and acronyms that not everyone understands. Systems like ABS, ESP, BAS, traction control or blind spot control are part of the elements that, little by little, have made their way in modern cars. A study by RACE and Castrol revealed that the lack of knowledge about the operation of these technologies can have a negative effect on driving, as 6% of drivers become frightened by these systems, some 13% become stressed, and 25% report being distracted. However, this lack of knowledge not only affects drivers, as the influence technology has on businesses is farreaching, and a recent survey within the motor trade has revealed that some car dealers are also struggling to keep up with the rapidly changing techno field. It is necessary to know the operation of each system to avoid that apprehensive feeling and anxiety caused by the use of technology that generates a continuous tension in the conduction known as 'technological

stress'. A cars cockpit has become less like a wheel and a few levers, and more like that of the Space Shuttle in recent years, and pilots are trained extensively in the use of their complex systems, a driver has to rely on a manual at best, or Google, assuming the driver actually bothers to read it of course. However, that is perhaps where to find the solution. Read the manual, search You Tube, search the internet, and train yourself for every device on your vehicle. Of course if it is a hire car it may prove difficult to do extensive research, but you should still closely examine the vehicle´s controls, and try them, before setting off. Although we can´t ignore the technology, we can acknowledge that it is here to stay, and get better. Technology is there to help us out, which is why terms like “driver assist” are so important, because the driver is still

(in 2019) in charge of the vehicle. Right now, Spanish and German researchers have developed a system that analyses the behaviour of the driver, and, based on the data collected (speed, changes of gear, acceleration, etc), makes a series of recommendations in real time. In the future, the car may

take over completely and there will be no need for humans to train and pass a test, but not yet. What happens in the mind? This stress caused by the technologies in the vehicle directly affects our psychophysical state. According to Luis Montoro, president of the Spanish Foundation for Road Safety, Fundación Española para la Seguridad Vial (FESVIAL), stress is a general process of adaptation to the environment whose problems appear when their level is very intense and is maintained for a long time. If the adaptation to this medium, in this case the technologies behind the wheel, is permanent, the mind cannot rest and, consequently, the body will perform negative actions. Health and driving concentration have to be compatible to drive safely. With the changing mode of information and the constant advancement of telecommunications, it seems that you can never keep up with technological developments. According to Antonio Cano Vindel, president of the Spanish Society for the Study of Anxiety and Stress, driving stress depends on the level of knowledge. While learning to drive, a level of disturbance is generated and it has an impact on an emotion associated with stress, which is anxiety. The amount of data that the driver can visualize and take into account while driving can fatigue you and, even worse, distract your attention by taking care of other data and taking your eyes off the road. Driving requires a level of concentration appropriate to the circumstances and any type of distraction can cause a road error with fatal consequences.

The Celts Club de Golf We played our April Championship for the first time on a Sunday at La Serena last week, we had another 80 plus field. The competition committee have the events running most efficiently, with the first players starting at 8.30 and the presentation of prizes finished by 3pm. Congratulations to Camillus and his team, Philip Mountford and Terry Fitzgerald for all their fine efforts. To the staff in the proshop, John and Jose, thank you for your attention to detail and for preparing the cards and collating the results. Gloria, Vanessa and all the kitchen staff well done as always, we were treated to some lovely tapas, thank you. To Wayne and his team, the course was presented as usual to a very high standard and the new putting green is taking shape nicely. Our club captain James Hayes was on hand to present the prizes. James again made the point of thanking all the oreganisers and all those who stayed for the presentation to honour those good enough to win a prize. His previous suggestion of wearing the club polo was a major success as the majority of the field donned their shirt. It

did look quite impressive especially on the course. Next month we might get the remainder to wear their shirt. Results of the day, the NTP’s Terry Fitzgerald, Tommy Warren, Karl Di Mascio, Chris Daw, Mike Banfield and Terry Jones. We had one Crystal event during the month and the winners were, Harry Lee 38, second Sally Hopkins 38 and third David Lock 37. Just a little note, I do not keep track of those who collect your prizes on your behalf if you are not present, so please don’t ask me as I don’t know. Cat. III Anthony Woodward 36, Michael Hooke 34 and Patrick Baker 33. Cat II Gordon Montgomery 35, Michael Banfield 35 and Gordon McCadden 35. Cat I. Pauvla Serakova 36, Eddie Wall 36 and John Doyle O’Brien 34. The gross was won by Robert Smith with 32. Second overall with 37 Ian Sadler and the winner with 39 points Leonard Smith. We are really making good progress in relation to slow play again might I suggest that players please keep up with the group in front of them. Do not wait until it is your turn to play to start your

routine, putting on or taking off your glove, marking and cleaning your ball, selecting your club, measuring your distance for your shot etc. all of these can be done in advance and this will help the

smooth flow of the game. We have a waiting list in operation at the moment for membership at La Serena, however membership of The Celts is always available. If you would like information on

joining our club or entering a team in any of the federation events why not send an e-mail to johnobrienalicante@gmail.com or call 615466398

Our 2nd round of the Spring Championship was fished at the Embalsa de Argos on the 17th April. It was quite a nice day when we arrived, just a bit cold, as the day wore on a really cold easterly wind got up making it bitterly cold. They must have had quite a lot of rain up here in the last couple of weeks as the water level was up about two feet. Taking the top spot was Ian Brown with a catch of 35.540kgs, with my self in second place with 23.200kgs closely followed by Dave Hutchinson with 22.920kgs for third place, his wife Marlene also had a good day after her absence for the past weeks to take 4th position with 18.880kgs well done 1st Ian Brown with 35.540kgs fishing the feeder using pellet 2nd Terry Screen with 23.200kgs fishing the pole using paste 3rd Dave Hutchinson with 22.920kgs fishing the pole using paste and the feeder using pellet Tight Lines - TERRY SCREEN

A large contingent turned out for Captain’s Day with most of them gathering at the first tee to see Captain Eldon Carey fluff his drive. As Captain he was allowed a mulligan and this shot was sliced close to the outbounds, not a very auspicious start to his round. Everyone enjoyed a great day on the course and an even better evening at Los Angeles with Eldon taking on the starring role ably assisted by Alan. The restaurant did us proud with fantastic food and great service, thank you. Thanks also to all who made the day a success especially Rory,

Hazel and the staff at Paddy’s Point also Paul, Mick and Myra and all our generous sponsors. 3rd place on the day went to Eldon’s Dad Tony with 34pts, 2nd Alan Cuddihy 34pts c/b and the winner was Ted Duffy on 35pts. Dear reader, getting turned over by Lionel Messi is one thing. Getting turned over by Theo Walcott is another thing entirely. It seems a bit daft to start today’s nit-picking talking about two teams battling not to finish in seventh, but there you go. You can blame Manchester United for that. Last week, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sent United into battle at the Camp Nou believing that Phil Jones, Ashley Young and Chris Smalling would be able to keep the great Argentine under control. On Sunday, they couldn’t lay a glove on Dominic Calvert-Lewin for crying out loud. Five years ago, David Moyes lost at Everton and was sacked. I’m not suggesting for a second that Solskjaer should be looking over his shoulder at all, of course I am not, but it is worth pointing out that David de Gea, Jones and Smalling were shocking that day too. How are at least two of them still in United’s starting eleven? With ‘Ole at the wheel’ United went on their best away run in the club’s history, winning nine on the spin. They’ve managed to follow that up with five away defeats in a row, their worst collective since 1981. The 4-0 spanking at Goodison Park saw United move to 49 Premier League goals conceded this season; the last time they shipped this many was in 1989/90 when Fergie was trying to win the title with Lee Martin in the team. Martin was a worse full-back than Ashley Young, believe it or not. Do you remember when people

thought De Gea was the best shotstopper in world football? Yeah, that. He’s now let in eight goals from outside the area this season. That’s not very good, especially when you think about the one from Messi that slipped under him last week. Maybe there is a reason Man United are refusing to pay him £350k a week, eh? You could argue that I am not paying enough respect to how well Everton played. You are right, I am not. They lost 2-0 to Fulham last week, that just tells you how bad United were. Nobody loses to Fulham (unless you are Bournemouth, but we will come on to that). Solskjaer said before the match that it was ‘unlikely’ United would be swapping over as many as six players in the squad over the summer. With that in mind, Ole, you might want to start thinking about when is the best moment to jump ship. This isn’t going to get any better with this lot. Many people said they wished Manchester City’s Champions League clash with Tottenham had never ended, such was the craziness on offer. Well, Ayoze perez they only had to wait something like 62 hours for it to get going again and after 62 hours and four minutes, there was yet another goal. Phil Foden became the first player born in the 2000s to net in the Premier League and it looked like we were in for another pure goal-fest. Yeah, appearances can be deceptive. Instead, let’s reflect on the things we will remember about City’s Champions

League exit. There could well be a statue of Llorente in years to come, not that you’d really be able to tell the difference. If nothing else, his hip could well go down in history. And what about the celebrations? No, I am not talking about the Poch and his team at the final whistle. I’m talking about Peppy G, Raheem Sterling and everyone to do with City when they thought they’d scored their fifth in injury time; just before VAR got involved and deduced, correctly, that Sergio Aguero’s socks were in an offside position. The Premier League match was never,

ever going to match the midweek match. What we did get was another Kevin de Bruyne injury that must have been celebrated on Merseyside and Spurs complaining about a handball decision. I know, right? The irony. Liverpool sit top of the table once again with City’s game in hand being against thatManchester United side. Liverpool took their time to find a way

past Neil Warnock’s Cardiff City but the result was never really in doubt. And, just to make sure, Mohamed Salah teased Sean Morrison into hugging him a slightly overly familiar way in the penalty area leaving the referee little choice than to give a penalty. All that talk of City’s quadruple hopes coming to an end; don’t forget Liverpool could do quite a nice double themselves if a few things go their way. ‘Arsenal are one of the best teams in Europe at home’ according to Martin Keown. Really, Martin? Really? Would you care to explain how they (a) lost to Crystal Palace at the Emirates and (b) saw Christian Benteke celebrating the fact he’d actually hit the target for the first time in a year? Yes, yes; Arsenal sorted out their horrible away form for long enough on Thursday night to beat Napoli and go through in the Europa League but losing 3-2 to the Palace puts yet another dent in that top four proposal. With both United and Arsenal shooting themselves in the foot somewhat, the door has been left wide open for Chelsea. Is there a more frustrating football team than Bournemouth? One week, they batter Brighton 5-0. The following week, they lose at home to Fulham. Fulham! At least you get value for money when you pay to watch Bournemouth. Their matches have thrown up 110 goals so far. And most of them have gone in their own net. Back-

to-back wins for Fulham means that surely they now give the rebuilding job to Scotty Parker? West Ham against Leicester was always likely to give us a little bit of entertainment and we were not disappointed. West Ham fans were, though. Especially given the fact they conceded in injury time to lose another two points. That said, Mauricio Pellegrini is convinced his team have been robbed of five points in the last two matches given the offside decisions that have gone against them. Maybe, maybe. Or maybe it is just karma for the fact the club has spanked £250k on a carpet. I think we can all agree that Wolves have clocked off for the season after letting Watford beat them in the FA Cup. After their midweek defeat to Cardiff, Brighton were desperate for anything from the game and what they got was a clean sheet and a point. Brighton have not scored for 35 days now but that was their first point in five matches. Will it be enough to keep them up? If Mike Ashley is reading this, just give Rafa Benitez what he wants, will you? It’s rare Newcastle score three in the same game, let alone the same player getting all of them. Ayoze Perez was the hero as Newcastle confirmed their Premier League safety. All eyes now move to June 30th, the day Rafa’s contract expires. You get the feeling that Watford’s Gerard Deulofeu has no intention of being on the subs bench next time his side rock up at Wembley. The Spanish free spirit scored a double against woeful Huddersfield, taking his recent tally of good things in front of goal to nine goals or assists in the last ten matches. Drop him if you dare, Javi.
