The council need a majority of 13 councillors out of the possible 25 to be able to govern. Something that the previous, four-party council had not had for the majority of the time they were in local government. Now it is down to the PP with Eduardo Dolón as mayor, to fulfil their promises. Veterinary services agreed The veterinary clinic San Antón has won the contract to provide service to Torrevieja’s animal shelter. The announcement was made by the councillor for the protection of animals, Carmen Morate, (below) at a press conference on 20th May. The service has been organised into two lots. The first is that of general veterinary services and the second hospitalisation and 24 hour care. The Clinica San Antón is based in Guardamar and it provided the best tender for the contract which should now take ten working days to be formalised. It will last for two years with the possibility of an extension for a further three years. The clinic has more than 15 workers, provides a 24 hour service and has a proven track record. The service will include the administration of tests, vaccines, specialist food, sterilisation and castration, the fitting of microchips, European veterinary cards, surgery, both simple and complex. There was a third contract to be awarded for the cremation of animals but this has not yet been agreed.

‘By June, Torrevieja will at last have a suitable veterinary service for its animals,’ explained Councillor Morate. Although the contract for cremation has not been awarded, this should not pose a problem as it can be covered with relatively small contracts as needed. This service extends beyond that of animals

that die in the shelter to include those collected at the feline colonies and those discovered by the refuse collectors in their work. ‘Thanks to this new service no animal in our shelter will go without the attention that it needs,’ said the councillor. Suzanne O’Connell

Local taxi laws to change

The councillor for transport in Torrevieja, Javier Manzanares, met last week with the directors of radio Taxi and Teletaxi to present the draft modification of the local regulations surrounding taxis in the town. The laws were in need of review and a process has been adopted which includes discussion and consultation with the taxi owners. Modifications have been made which are now back with the taxi drivers for their last check before being passed on to the technicians for approval and subsequently for approval at town council level.

Gastro event in Torrevieja Once again Torrevieja is advertising an event that should please those who enjoy dining out. ‘Torrevieja y el Mar’ will take place from 10th to 14th June and is rather more expensive than the usual tapas routes. On offer is a menu for €50 that should appeal to those with not too tight a budget. Five restaurants are taking part: Nautilus, Mesón de la Costa, Luz de Mar, El Puerto and La Barra de Manolo. Each restaurant is offering a special menu in turn. On Monday 10th June, Nautilus is offering its four courses that include a meat or fish option. On Tuesday 11th June it’s the turn of El Mesón de la Costa with their fresh fish dish. On Wednesday 12th June you can Continued on page 5

Councillor Fanny Serrano (below) has now finally signed the opening licence for the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre. This is just one of the major buildings in Torrevieja that was allowed to open without having the proper paperwork in place. The Virgen del Carmen was opened in 2005 but has not had an opening licence since then. An opening licence or Licencia de Apertura is essential as the sign off paper for buildings that will be open to the public. The town hall must give their

permission for the building to open and check that various measures are in place to safeguard those using them. The procedure to make sure that the paperwork was in place started during 2016. The first step was to find the existing documents that were available and had in fact been sent by the PP to the Regional government. However, it was in fact the responsibility of the town council as the building does not exceed the threshold of 500 seats. In 2017 the local government agreed that the work done on the building could be signed off in readiness for the granting of the opening licence as well as the emergency action plan and acoustic audit. Following this the application for an opening licence was made at which point it was noted that there were some deficiencies in the fire system that needed rectifying. This meant that the building had to be closed for a short period of time in November 2018. Now, the licence has at last been granted and signed by the councillor. ‘It is much easier to grant an opening licence to a building before it is inaugurated rather than many years after it has been operating,’ explained Councillor Serrano. ‘During the time it has been open it has also suffered wear and tear and maintenance work has had to be done.’ However, at least the building did not have to be closed unlike the Town Theatre where a solution has not yet been found. Now they are back with a comfortable majority. Altogether they obtained 46% of the vote with 10,261 votes being cast in their favour altogether. Such a victory had not been expected following the latest, recent general election which saw the PP devastated at the polls. The PSOE (labour) party came second

obtaining five council seats and Los Verdes/Compromís (The Green party) took three. This sees three of their councillors returned: José Manuel Dolón, José Hurtado and Carmen Morate. Ciudadanos,Vox and Sueña both obtained one council seat each. The total turnout for this election was 51.04% of the population of the town a total that was similar to that of 2015 (50.59%). Get ready for the May Fair The May Fair this year spans May and June, opening from 29th May to 2nd June. However, this annual event, officially titled La Feria de Sevillanas, is definitely on its current schedule as the work begins to install the ‘casetas’ or marquees for the different associations in Torrevieja. The lighting is now being installed following the final signing of the contract which was made public on 21st May. The fair had to be delayed a couple of weeks because of hold ups with administrative arrangements but now this has all been finalised and the official programme for the fair has been published. This festival is recognised as being of national tourist interest and has been taking place for more than three decades. The preparation of the site began a week ago. The area is transformed from the usual mixture of stalls and fair ground rides to a showground full of marquees and, of course, the impressive centre stage. It is expected that on Wednesday 29th May thousands of visitors will converge here for the opening of the fair which will continue until Sunday 2nd June. During that time the 28 different marquees will be offering food and entertainment for those with the time to browse and enjoy the atmosphere. In the centre of the ground is the main stage where different

groups and individuals will perform to the crowd. Of special note this year will be the performance of Manu Tenorio on Saturday 1st June at 11pm and Raya Real at the same time but on Sunday 2nd June at the closing ceremony. At its opening there will be fireworks and music on Wednesday 29th May at 8.30pm. Over the next

performances. On Saturday 1st June there will be chance to see the carriages, carts and horses which take to the streets and make their way down to the ground from 1pm until 5pm. The May Fair this year can go ahead with two major contracts. The town must pay €145,000 in total and there have been various

five days a number of local dance groups will be performing including María del Ángel, Escuela Municipal de Danza, Centro de Danza de Lola y Arancha Blanco, Soul Dance, Paya’s and Dharma. They will entertain the crowds with a variety of flamenco

hold ups in the contracting process over the last four years. However, the local council has tried to ensure that the correct procedures are in place and that the allocation of marquee space can go ahead fairly and transparently. Suzanne O’Connell

the

Spanish handball championship The final phase of the Spanish handball championship will take place in Torrevieja. The town will play host to the final stretch of the competition for young women between the ages of 14 and 16 years old. Only the last eight teams will take part in this phase and from them the national team will be selected. The Mare Nostrum secondary school team will be taking part in the event which will take place from Wednesday 29th May until Sunday 2nd June. On Saturday June 1st the semi-finals will be played and on Sunday June 2nd there will be a match play off for third and fourth places. The grand final will take place at 12pm on June 2nd.

A fresh look for the fishing port It looks as though Torrevieja’s fishing port could have the make over it’s been hoping for. The port has been included in plans published by the Valencian regional government which could also attract European funding. The work would include the adaptation of the docks and improvements to the environment. At the moment the exact amount of money to be invested is unknown. In April Councillor Fanny Serrano met Continued on page 8

The Partido Popular, or PP as it is commonly known, has won the local elections in Orihuela with 9,461 votes, which is equivalent to 34 percent. However, in order to be able to continue in power it will once again need to join forces in a coalition government as it has for the last four years with Ciudadanos. Despite the win, the PP, a conservative party, have lost two councillors (1,183 votes) securing nine and Ciudadanos obtained five, which if they work together gives one more than is required for the absolute majority. Emilio Bascuñana was the most voted for candidate in the elections and will continue to lead the nine PP councillors. The Socialists’ six councillors will be led by Carolina Gracia in Orihuela. However, the poor performance of the PSOE has seen it lose influence in many municipalities across the Vega Baja where it has governed as the major partner of a coalition although it has maintained a dozen councils. Ciudadanos’ five councillors in Orihuela will be led by Jose Francisco Aix. Carlos Bernabe head of Cambiemos will have three councillors. Vox will be represented in Orihuela Town Hall for the first time with two councillors headed by Jose Maria Garcia Escolona. Results PP – 9,461 votes (34.18 percent) PSVP-PSOE – 6,420 votes (23.20 percent) Ciudadanos – 5,289 votes (19.11 percent) Cambiemos – 3,574 (12.91 percent) Vox – 1,895 (6.85 percent) However, the votes painted a completely different picture on the Coast where Cambiemos swept in with 949 votes, the C’s gained 544, PSOE 471, PP 312 and Vox 252. Of

course, this is all weighted and is taken as a whole vote across the municipality and so despite people on the Coast making it quite clear they are far from impressed by the PP , that is exactly who they will continue to the be governed by. Of course, as with all elections, the run up to the 2019 campaign has seen its fair share of controversy. The Mayor may well be keeping his position but has been plagued by claims that between 2007 and 2014 he claimed a salary for a job in the national Health Department that he didn’t do. These claims led to confrontation within the PP at a national and regional level in terms of who would be listed as the lead candidate for Orihuela. National Health Minister Ana Barcelo finally put paid to the allegations made against Bascuñana and he repeated his candidacy. The PP turmoil was also fuelled by the Brugal court case, which was concerned with the alleged irregularities in the rubbish and waste management contract for the municipality of Orihuela dating back to pre-2011. The accusations focus on two former PP Mayors; Jose Manuel Medina who was in power between 1991 and 2007 and Monica Lorente who was Mayor between 2007 and 2011. Mayor Bascuñana has valued the results positively and in his first statement he said that “we won the elections in adverse conditions, against many elements, both external and internal,” this in reference to the internal disputes within the PP itself. However he will need to rely on another party if he is to remain in power. Questioned about a possible pact with Ciudadanos, Bascuñana said that “from Monday we will establish contacts and follow on from this new scenario that the people of Orihuela have given us”. Traffic chaos as truck overturns

50€ Discount on Any New Bike

There was traffic chaos on Sunday as a truck carrying melons overturned on the A-7 motorway at Orihuela, forcing the road to close for most of the afternoon. Miraculously, no one was seriously injured in the incident which occurred just after midday on Sunday near exit 546 of the busy stretch of motorway at the turn for Orihuela and Benferri. The driver of the truck and the two occupants of a car also involved in the incident escaped unharmed. Tailbacks of over two kilometres built up in both directions as emergency services were forced to

close the road as the accident was cleared. A detour was set up and drivers, who had been trapped on the motorway in the heat for over two hours, were diverted off the motorway towards Santomera. The truck, which had been heading towards Alicante, overturned and slid along the motorway, dragging signage with it and blocking both lanes of traffic. An Audi, travelling behind the truck, could not avoid crashing into it. An investigation has been opened into the cause of the crash.

On Thursday 24th May Councillor Domingo Soler appeared before the cameras to present the proposal for Torrevieja’s new coat of arms. ‘It’s something we’ve been working on over the past few years,’ explained the councillor, ‘and we’ve been to Valencia many times to discuss and negotiate the design.’ The shield had to be provisionally agreed by the Heraldry Council which specifies many technical points that must be incorporated in the design. The coat of arms is a square shield with a rounded tip containing a silver tower next to a wall with a portal. On the right hand side there are blue and silver waves,

a gold ship and above, a royal crown. The crown is dictated according to the tradition of the Kingdom of Valencia. Changes from the old shield design include the disappearance of the seagulls and little houses that appeared to the right of the tower. The design will have to now be put forward to the new council that takes its place following the local elections. Domingo Soler will no longer be in office but expresses the wish that the new council unites on the subject of an image of Torrevieja that represents all its constituents. Suzanne O’Connell

Investigation into Three Kings contracts A court in Orihuela is investigating the allocation of contracts for the annual Cabalgata de Reyes processions in 2014. There is a maximum threshold of €18,000 up to which a minor contract can be awarded which allows an easier processing procedure to take place. However, there were two contracts awarded to carry out the procession in 2014 by the PP. One of these was for €18,000 and another for €8,280. It is being claimed that both contracts were for the same activity but were split in order to avoid having to go through the more complicated contracting procedure. The two contracts, it is claimed, were signed six days apart and the recipient of one of them joined the company providing the other a few months later. The court continues to investigate these irregularities. Suzanne O’Connell

Rock Against Cancer Once again, Monroe’s Rock Café are organising their well known Rock Against Cancer concert in Torrevieja. This year it will take place at the Eras de la Sal, Paseo Vistalegre. There are two dates planned which include Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th June. The event will begin at 4.30pm and the first band plays at 5pm. The tickets are €10 for the day and €18 for a two-day pass. You can obtain the tickets from Monroe’s Rock Café on 12 Calle Apolo Torrevieja, from the AECC Office, 55 Calle Apolo Torrevieja or from entradium.com. Last year was the first year that the event was held in the Eras de la Sal and this has proved to be a popular venue. There are a number of well-known local bands performing including Kolted and Ricky Diamond and you will hear tribute groups to bands such as Iron Maiden, ACDC and Queen. There are also usually additional activities arranged which appeal to different members of the family and it is an enjoyable day out. The proceeds for the event will got to

Illegal leafleting investigated An investigation has been launched into the distribution of leaflets on cars outside Torrevieja hospital during the local election campaign. The campaigns are carefully controlled in Spain and there are clear rules about where advertising can take place and how. The leafleting was done anonymously and included around 5,000 leaflets which were placed on the cars and asked patients and visitors not to vote for the left. The publication made reference to the Valencian

Compromís and PSOE have indicated that they would like to see the hospital returned to public management when the concession runs out in November 2021. The firm responsible for placing the leaflets has acknowledged that they were asked to print 5,000 and place them in the hospital’s car park as well as in other parts of the town. This firm has admitted awareness of the prohibition on placing leaflets on windscreens but that it had been assured that it

government and accused them of wanting to destroy the hospital which is privately run. Other allegations included in the leaflet were that the left would continue to maintain its commitment to the valencian language and would not follow through the plans to double the N332. The leaflet is clearly printed and whoever is responsible has made a significant investment in its production. The implication is that it is the management group of Ribera Salud itself that has had involvement in its printing and distribution. Both

could do this in the public car park without any problem. Ribera Salud have denied any involvement. The investigation continues but questions now have to be asked about how such distribution could go ahead in broad daylight without the knowledge of the private security service which patrols the hospital. It has also been noted that one of the images used in the leaflet can also be seen on other publicity issued by the company. Suzanne O’Connell

The budget is passed at last Finally, the 2019 budget for Torrevieja has been passed on Friday 24th May after what has been an unusual turn of events. Councillor Paqui Parra for Ciudadanos has registered on sick leave for three months and consequently the four party coalition has been able to vote through the budget after what has been a long and difficult path. Los Verdes (Green Party), PSOE, IU and APTCe have ten councillors together. Sueña Torrevieja have supported the budget in their role as opposition councillors. However, the eleven councillors of the PP blocked the passage of the budget when supported by the two Ciudadanos councillors. With this support reduced to one, the budget could at last be approved. The budget had limped along, having a vote in its favour in January due to councillor Miguel Cano being away in Australia. This allowed the provisional passage of the financial agreement for 2019. Objections have been met all along the way with challenges to details. The budget amounts to around 90 million euros and is necessary to take forward the major plans for the town. However, now we wait for the votes to come in on Sunday to determine exactly how the money will be spent. However, the coalition party must at least feel satisfied that they have finally brought home a budget to bed. Suzanne O’Connell

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP It was not a positive start to the week for the pound; despite the PM’s assurances of a “bold offer” that will “win new support”, the market didn’t seem convinced and sterling was down by an average of 0.3% on the day and 1.6% down from last Monday's levels. There was a slight increase after a rumour that the new deal would include a second referendum, but fell again after it became clear that it was not on the cards – there was an option included in the bill, but to be decided by parliament only if they approved the withdrawal bill. Sterling fell as the political ramifications became clear. A lack of compromise between Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn, the resignation of the leader of the House of Commons and the increased pressure on the PM to announce her own departure all left the pound struggling. The European Elections on Thursday may provide a further indication of the mood of the electorate, but the results aren’t due out until Sunday when all of Europe has voted. In the meantime, there was little in the ecostats to change the picture for the pound. The CBI's Industrial Trends Survey showed that "Total orders reached their lowest balance since October 2016, while export orders worsened to a balance not seen since July 2016," highlighting the impact of Brexit. The overall index

was five points lower on the month at -10. Headline inflation rose from 1.9% to 2.1% in April, missing the 2.2% forecast. Whatever the numbers say, all eyes remain on politics as Theresa May announced her resignation and the market gears up for a leadership content at a crucial moment in the Brexit process and the pound will struggle under a further level of uncertainty. EUR Euroland inflation was unchanged at 1.7%. Data released this week included a widening of Euroland's trade surplus, a 5.7% jump in housing starts and a 0.6% rise in building permits. A strong 2.1% increase in Canadian manufacturing shipments counted for little, perhaps because of trade concerns. The ongoing US-China trade war is having a knock-on effect on European trade and business confidence. The elections for European parliament are taking place for the next few days; while perhaps not as significant as in the UK where it may indicate where people stand on Brexit, the chances are that the results may suggest how firm the grip of nationalism really is across Europe, and whether there is a sense of optimism about the European Parliament moving forward. They may be a reaction from the euro to the election results early next week once the votes have been counted.

Environmental June Torrevieja’s town council are making June ‘sea awareness’ month. In a campaign that includes Agamed and Habaneras shopping centre, the importance of the seas and the oceans will be the main focus for discussion. Activities are being organised including workshops, talks, films and other promotions designed to draw attention to this important natural resource. All the activities will be free and one of the key messages will be the importance of ridding our waters of plastic. The poster advertising environmental June features a turtle and is illustrated with the colours chosen to depict the Sustainable Development Goals for 2030. The aim of this month is not only to raise awareness of the problems caused by littering the sea with plastic but also some practical ideas about what can be done to reverse the problems that have been created. Several films and documentaries will be shown in the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre. On June 2nd it will be ‘Captain Fantastic’, on June 7th Netflix’s documentary ‘An Ocean of Plastic’ and on June 11th it will be the turn of Barbacana. All these

films will be shown at 8pm. On Thursday June 6th there will be a conference in the Casino at 7.30pm entitled ‘Sea turtle conservation in the Valencian Community’. On Sunday June 9th at 8pm there will be a music concert in La Mata’s natural park by the chamber group of the Torrevieja Symphony Orchestra. There will be a free transport service to this event. On June 5th a campaign will begin called ‘shark patrol’. This will focus on collecting plastic from the beach and Habaneras shopping centre will participate in this too. A plastic container in the shape of a shark will be unveiled in Habaneras to draw attention to the danger of plastics as damaging our coasts. Also on June 8th there will be a talk led by a shark expert in the Real Club Náutico about the effect of climate change on the shark community in the Mediterranean. During last year’s environmental month a total of 2,500 people took part in the various activities. It is hoped to beat this with the 2019 events. Suzanne O’Connell

How to make a pension last a lifetime: The essential guide to financial success in retirement • Four years ago, a rule change had dramatic consequences for retirees. • The reforms, known as 'pension freedoms', gave flexibility around spending. • This means people can opt for something called drawdown, where you keep your money invested in shares and funds and take out income when you need it.

F

our years ago, the Government brought in a rule change that had dramatic consequences for retirees. The reforms, known as 'pension freedoms', gave savers unprecedented flexibility around how they spend their hard‐earned cash in retirement. But with that freedom comes a huge responsibility to ensure you do not run out of money and end up living on the poverty line in old age. Before the rule change, most people simply bought an annuity, which is like an insurance policy that guarantees to provide a set income for life. While this is still an option — and for many people a wise choice — those who feel confident managing their own investments can instead now opt for something called drawdown, where you keep your money invested in shares and funds and take out an income as and when you need it. There is an alternative to managing your own funds, and that is where Seagate Wealth are on hand to help you make the right choices for you and your family. We can provide you with dedicated pensions solutions that offer a comprehensive range of investments coupled with local experience and expertise in a well‐ regulated, tax efficient manner. Careful planning — with the help of an adviser — means taking your money efficiently. When you have worked hard all your life for your money and it has not been handed to you on a plate, you deserve to enjoy it.

Best show garden at Chelsea Flower show It's the one award every designer yearns for, and with the M&G Garden winning the Best in Show, it's given Andy his eighth gold medal. Built by Crocus, this woodland landscape with stone platforms and huge burnt timber sculptures representing natural rock formations, is inspired by nature’s power to regenerate.

about how he hoped visitors would interact with his garden. 'I want visitors to think "wow!" when they first see it, then be drawn into the detail and engage with it – to look closely at individual plants and the water in the garden. In fact they could recreate our use of waterspouts at home, using just one to have water falling into a small pool,' he said. Only four Show Gardens won Gold Medals this year, including The M&G Garden, The Resilience Garden designed by Sarah Eberle, The Welcome to Yorkshire Garden designed by Mark Gregory, and the Morgan Stanley Garden designed by Chris Beardshaw.

HERE ARE SOME OF THE ‘BEST IN’ WINNERS... The M&G Garden features a rich tapestry in a lush, naturalistic style, mostly in shades of green with a small pool at the front and a free-flowing planting structure alongside statement blackened timber. A focal point of the garden, the burnt oak timber has been fashioned to resemble rock formations and is positioned to guide the eye through the garden and its lavish planting. RHS judge James Alexander-Sinclair said: 'We seldom have the pleasure of judging perfection but in this case, Andy Sturgeon’s garden did not disappoint. The garden delighted designers, thrilled landscapers and perked up the plants people to no end.' In a previous RHS interview, Andy talked

Best artisan garden Family Monsters Garden designed by Alistair Bayford and built by idverde From financial problems to health and wellbeing issues, this garden represents the range of pressures faced by families in Britain today. Through a circular design, the garden leads to a family space, where all can come together to reflect, get their pressures out in the open and gather strength to face them together. The pool of clear water offers reflection and perspective. Best space to grow Beyond the Screen designed by Joe Perkins and built by The Outdoor Room This coastal-themed garden aims to celebrate the positive impact of spending meaningful time on social media and how

this can enrich lives – particularly those of young people – in the real world. The garden celebrates the stories of people who use Facebook to find common ground with others and to connect in real life, including the 1.5 million people in the UK who are part of a gardening group on Facebook. Best construction The Resilience Garden designed by Sarah Eberle and built by Crocus Set within the British countryside, the garden looks ahead to the challenges facing forests of the future, exploring how our woodlands can be made resilient to a changing climate and the increasing threats of pests and diseases. The garden helps visitors to learn about these challenges, and what action is being taken to ensure our forests are healthy for generations to come. Highlights include exotic species alongside native species which have been specially selected to thrive in habitats that mimic existing and probable effects of climate change.

Welcome to Mumbai

Mumbai is the capital city of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is the most populous city in India with an estimated city proper population of 12.4 million as of 2011. Along with the neighbouring regions of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, it is the second most populous metropolitan area in India, with a population of 21.3 million as of 2016. Mumbai lies on the Konkan coast on the west coast of India and has a deep natural harbour.

The seven islands that came to constitute Mumbai were home to communities of fishing colonies of the Koli people. For centuries, the islands were under the control of successive indigenous empires before being ceded to the Portuguese Empire and subsequently to the East India Company when in 1661 Charles II of England married Catherine of Braganza and as part of her dowry Charles received the ports of Tangier and Seven Islands of Bombay. Mumbai is the financial, commercial and

entertainment capital of India. It is also one of the world's top ten centres of commerce in terms of global financial flow Economy Mumbai is India's largest city and is the financial and commercial capital of the country as it generates 6.16% of the total GDP. It serves as an economic hub of India, contributing 10% of factory employment, 25% of industrial output, 33% of income tax collections, 60% of customs duty collections, 20% of central excise tax collections, 40% of India's foreign trade and â‚š4,000 crore in corporate taxes. Along with the rest of India, Mumbai has witnessed an economic boom since the liberalisation of 1991, the finance boom in the midnineties and the IT, export, services and outsourcing boom in the 2000s. Although Mumbai had prominently figured as the hub of economic activity of India in the 1990s, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region is presently witnessing a reduction in its contribution to India's GDP. Architecture The architecture of the city is a blend of Gothic Revival, Indo-Saracenic, Art Deco, and

other contemporary styles. Most of the buildings during the British period, such as the Victoria Terminus and Bombay University, were built in Gothic Revival style. Their architectural features include a variety of European influences such as German gables, Dutch roofs, Swiss timbering, Romance arches, Tudor casements, and traditional Indian features. Language Mumbai has a large polyglot population like any other metropolitan city of India. Sixteen major languages of India are also spoken in Mumbai, with the most common being Marathi, Hindi, Gujarati and English. English is extensively spoken and is the principal language of the city's white collar workforce. Culture Mumbai's culture is a blend of traditional festivals, food, music, and theatres. The city offers a cosmopolitan and diverse lifestyle with a variety of food, entertainment, and night life, available in a form and abundance comparable to that in other world capitals. Mumbai's history as a major trading centre has led to a diverse range of cultures, religions, and cuisines coexisting in the city. This unique blend of cultures is due to the migration of people from all over India since the British period.

Can't get it out of my mind I lost a close family member recently. Although years previously, this person told me not to see them in the chapel of rest, her elderly husband needed to see her one last time, so there was no way I wasn’t going to accompany him. Now though, I can’t get the image out of my mind. It’s the last thing I think about when I go to sleep (if I can sleep at all), and the first thing I think about when I wake. I can see now why she asked me not to go. She’d gone to see her own mother after she died, and I promised her I wouldn’t do the same if that’s what she wanted. I don’t feel bad that I broke a promise, just that I can’t forget it, and I can see now that she was trying to spare me. Viewing loved ones in the chapel of rest is always going to be a traumatic experience, and the image can stay with you for many years. The person doesn’t look the same for one. I remember my mother said that the funeral home had done her mother’s hair wrong, and put too much make up on her, and that she would have hated it. She also didn’t warn me just how ‘cold’ the deceased would be, and that came as quite a shock to me when I went, so I do understand how you feel. When these thoughts enter your mind it’s important to try and distract yourself. Sit up and read an amusing book before you go to sleep, or watch the television until you are really tired. Finally some bereavement counselling may help you, or to join a bereavement group. Getting over a close death can take years, but we can learn to cope with the right help. Spaniards remain pro-EU Optimism about Spain's national political situation has soared since the general elections, voters of all parties hugely support the country's membership of the European Union, but a majority believe Spain needs to take more of a central role in the bloc – these are the conclusions reached by market researchers Metroscopia. According to the survey, an overwhelming 81 percent believe that Spain benefits more by being in the EU than it would outside it – a view largely held by young adults, but which is still prevalent even in the over-65s. Voters of all political parties in the youngest age group interviewed – between 18 and 34 – were the most likely to support Spain's being an EU member State, at 86 percent, with the 55-64 and over-65 categories the least likely to, but still believing the European Union to be beneficial to Spain in 79 percent of cases. Those aged 35-54 inclusive were 82 percent in favour of the country's continued EU membership. Across the board, Spaniards do not believe the EU is perfect, but rather than being a reason to want to leave, they consider the situation could be improved by Spain taking on a more central role within the entity. During the reign of the PP between 2011 and June 2018, Spain's presence in the EU was not greatly felt, although even during the previous PP-led tenure from 1998 to 2004 and the last socialist-led government of 2004 to 2011, the country could still have made itself more conspicuous, the public often said at the time. Spain's real 'thrust' within the bloc was during the reign of socialist president Felipe González with lasted until 1998 – a leader credited with aiding the country’s joining of the Union and making its presence felt, leading to significant

investment in national infrastructure. In total, 55 percent of Metroscopia's interviewees feel Spain should carry more weight within the EU than it currently does, and view the situations in the UK and Italy – the former, with Brexit scheduled for 31st October at the latest, reducing the membership to 27 countries, and the latter, with a far-right government now in power – as the ideal opportunity for Spain to 'push itself'. As for national politics, a Metroscopia survey in March found that 87 percent of Spaniards thought the situation was 'bad' – with the country being led by a party which only held 85 seats out of Parliament's 351 – but now, only 56 percent take this view. Spaniards' views of the national economy remain poor, however: 93 percent of Vox voters, 86 percent of PP voters and 83 percent of Ciudadanos voters are of this opinion. A majority of those who voted Unidos Podemos – 65 percent - believe the economic situation is 'poor', although a much lower figure than those who voted for the right. Among those who cast their ballots in favour of the winning socialists, though, those who consider Spain's economic situation to be 'poor' are in the minority, albeit only just, at 49 percent.

BUYING YOUR HOME IN SPAIN WITH FAMILY OR FRIENDS? Rebecca Serwotka

T

hinking of buying your dream home in Spain? And, it just so happens your friends are wanting to do the same too! Well what if you pool your funds together to buy something more substantial, that would accommodate both families? Sounds great? Maybe not! Well, you need to think this through very carefully. The idea of joining monies together, to buy something bigger sounds great, and creating your own type of “timeshare” seems extremely appealing, but it’s not all a bed of roses. Over the years, I’ve had my fair share of buyers that jointly purchase property, with either their close friends or family, only to find out later, that it was one of the worst decisions they made. It all started out great, but in the end, not only couldn’t they agree on dividing their time spent in the mutual home equally, but couldn’t agree on furnishing style, or who would pay for what, when things needed replacing! If you are still keen to purchase a property with another family, try creating your own little “community fee” between you. That way, if anything needs replacing or repainting, no-one will have to begrudge putting their hand in their pocket. One major problem that could, and I’ve seen happen, is when one party wants or needs to sell the mutual home, and the other does not. Obviously, this could be a major hurdle, as forcing someone to sell, can be very costly and very unpleasant. If I still haven’t dissuaded you, then the absolute best way to

protect yourself, is to put everything you agree on, IN WRITING with a Solicitor. The same applies if you are including family members on the Title Deeds. Think long term first, before including any “in-law’s” on your purchase. You may think you have a good relationship, well maybe you really do, right now anyway, but no-one knows what’s in the future, and there’s nothing worse than having to pay off your daughter’s ex-husband, for example, to have his name removed from your Title Deeds. Again this can be a very costly experience. If you’re buying a property, and putting it in your loved one’s name, there is a *clause in Spain called “usufructo.” This directly translates into English as “usufruct.” Simply meaning, that whoever you appoint, i.e. yourself, has the right to enjoy the use and advantages of a property that doesn’t belong to them. Using this “usufructo” clause, will allow you to remain in the property for as long as you wish, and even though you are not the legal registered owner, no-one can force you to vacate the home until you are ready to say Adios! So if you decide to buy a home with someone other than your significant other, treat it is a logical business deal, and make sure everything is agreed upfront and put in writing. Look at it as a type of “prenuptial” agreement, before tying this deal together! And if the other party doesn’t like it, and asks why you want everything in writing, tell them, because Rebecca told you to! *With any legal matters regarding property law in Spain, it is always best to seek the advice of a local Lawyer. If you need any recommendations, please feel free to contact my office.

Orange is the New Black

Bingeworthy Box Sets Line of Duty

The series begins revolving around Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling), a woman in her thirties living in New York City who is sentenced to 15 months in Litchfield Penitentiary, a minimum-security women's federal prison in upstate New York. Chapman was convicted of transporting a suitcase full of drug money for her girlfriend Alex Vause (Laura Prepon), an international drug smuggler. The offense had occurred 10 years prior to the start of the series and in that time Piper had moved on to a quiet, lawabiding life among New York's upper middle class. Her sudden and unexpected indictment disrupts her relationships with her fiancĂŠ, family and friends. In prison, Chapman is reunited with Vause (who named Chapman in her trial, resulting in Chapman's arrest) and they re-examine their relationship. Simultaneously, Chapman, along with the other inmates, attempt to grapple with prison's numerous, inherent struggles. Episodes often feature flashbacks of significant events from various inmates' and prison guards' pasts. These flashbacks typically depict how an inmate came to be in prison or develop a character's backstory. The prison is initially operated by the "Federal Department of Corrections" (a fictional version of the Federal Bureau of Prisons), and was in a later season acquired by the Management & Correction Corporation (MCC), a private prison company.

Socially awkward high school student Otis may not have much experience in the lovemaking department, but he gets good guidance on the topic in his personal sex ed course -- living with mom Jean, who is a sex therapist. Being surrounded by manuals, videos and tediously open conversations about sex, Otis has become a reluctant expert on the subject. When his classmates learn about his home life, Otis decides to use his insider knowledge to improve his status at school, so he teams with whip-smart bad girl Maeve to set up an underground sex therapy clinic to deal with their classmates' problems. But through his analysis of teenage sexuality, Otis realizes that he may need some therapy of his own. Sex Education is a British comedy-drama web television series, created by Laurie Nunn, that premiered in January 2019, on Netflix. The series stars Gillian Anderson, Asa Butterfield, Emma Mackey, Ncuti Gatwa, Connor Swindells, and Kedar Williams-Stirling. In February 2019, it was announced that the series had been renewed for a second season.

Business Profile

Seven out of every ten ovarian cancers are diagnosed in advanced phases Seven out of every ten ovarian cancers are diagnosed in their most advanced phases, because they present very non-specific symptoms that can be confused with other illnesses, which means that carcinomatosis is already present in most cases, claim specialists at Quirónsalud Torrevieja and Murcia. In Spain, ovarian cancer is the fourth cause of death by cancer in women and, although it is not extremely common, there are 3,200 new cases diagnosed each year. The age range presenting the most incidence is between 55 and 65 years of age, and although it’s not very common, it is often very aggressive and insidious when it comes to diagnosis, due to its non-specific symptoms, which can be confused with abdominal discomfort similar to indigestion, changes in intestinal rhythm and, sometimes,

the appearance of vaginal haemorrhages between menstrual cycles or in menopausal women. When confronted with these symptoms, specialists recommend going to the doctor and undergoing all necessary tests. According to Doctor Pedro Bretcha, Surgical Oncology Specialist Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja, “the use of technology is important, but what is most necessary is a multidisciplinary perspective regarding the cancer, with a specialised team, because treatment of this disease cannot be left exclusively in the hands of a surgeon, an oncologist or a gynaecologist; it must be led in a consensual manner and adapted to each patient.”

HIPEC increases survival rates in patients with ovarian cancer Surgery and, particularly, the use of HIPEC, increases survival rates in patients with ovarian cancer. This treatment is currently applied by the specialists at Quirónsalud Torrevieja and Murcia on patients diagnosed with peritoneal carcinomatosis, a pathology defined as the dissemination of a primary cancer, which can end up affecting other intra-abdominal organs. According to Doctor Pedro Cascales Oncological SurgeonatHospital Quirónsalud Murcia, “it is

precisely in these patients in whom, with the right approach, we can get results that could hardly be imagined before, results that depend significantly on the surgical team treating the patients.” In fact, the use of HIPEC increases the survival rate of patients with stage-III epithelial ovarian cancer. In addition, its use does not add any complications to the surgical procedure. This is the conclusion reached by the authors of a clinical trial published in the prestigious scientific journal The New England Journal of Medicine. Treatment with HIPEC allows for the combination of a high-intensity dose of chemotherapy, focused on the affected area, with a lower systemic toxicity due to the limited spreading of the medication from the peritoneal cavity to the systemic bloodstream, due to the characteristics of the peritoneal membrane and the medications itself. Its use requires intense training, with multidisciplinary teams and a high specialisation in oncological surgery, because it is a very complex technique. PAINT TRENDS FOR 2019 No wall in your home should be left as a blank canvas, so here’s the trending interior paint colours to get you inspired before the summer season ... Hazelnut Warm and inviting creamy shades of hazelnut paint colours are sure to never go out of style nor ever clash with

existing furnishings as it makes for one comforting go-to of a hue. For hazelnut paint colour ideas in your home, take a quick survey from room to room and consider which spaces need to be brightened up and catch more light as varying shades of hazelnut are great for bouncing light off to make a room appear larger than it is.

Lilac gray Though dove gray is one of the most classic paint colours when looking for modern alternatives to stark neutral paint colour ideas, there’s something a tad moodier about 2019’s lilac undertone injected options. For one, the addition of lilac works to make gray hues warmer, more gender neutral and cheery.

Dark green Officially called night watch and one of Pantone’s top 2019 paint colours, the hue is basically a new take on rich hunter green that hasn’t looked so viable since its last time in the interior design spotlight in the 90s. From muted to moody, this deep green colour trend can work to emulate the feeling of lush botanicals.

Bet365 to relocate from Gibraltar PEST CONTROL CARRIED OUT amid Brexit fears ON THE COAST

Bet365 has announced that it is moving its operations from Gibraltar to Malta, citing Brexit as a main reason for the move. The €70 million move is likely to mean the relocation of 1,000 staff from the betting giant’s offices on the Rock. The expansion in Malta, where the betting company has had a presence for a number of years, was welcomed by Prime Minister of the territory, Joseph Muscat. Meanwhile, the Government of Gibraltar said in a statement that it was working very constructively with Bet365. “It is clear that the decisions announced by Bet365 are directly related to Brexit and not to any matter otherwise related to Gibraltar,” the statement said. The large-scale relocation of staff from Gibraltar to Malta is expected to take place once major headway has been

made in the Brexit planning. A statement of Bet365 said: “As part of our strategic and contingency plans to ensure EU market access and to maintain and enhance operational efficiencies, we have been building our presence in Malta and operating a dual regulatory and licensing strategy between Gibraltar and Malta for a number of years. “However, from an operational and technical perspective and given our operating model, it has become increasingly challenging to efficiently run such multi-site operations and this has necessarily resulted in us conducting a review of our operations. “We also continue to operate in a highly uncertain environment, driven primarily by the continuing Brexit landscape.” The announcement comes just four years after Bet365 opted to make Gibraltar its main licensing hub.

The Councillor for Health, Noelia Grao, has given details on the schedule for pest control works that the Department will carry out until August across the municipality. She said: “It is at the beginning of summer with the arrival of the high temperatures when we begin to reinforce these measures in the centre of Orihuela, on the Coast and across the districts, with the aim of controlling and preventing possible pests, insects and rodents in the municipality through the application of treatments,” explained the mayor. During the last week these works were started in La Matanza, La Murada and Desamparados. This week they continue in San Bartolomé, La Campaneta and Molins. From 27th May to 2nd June the teams will be in La Aparecida and Raiguero de Levante, Corredores and Bonanza Raiguero and from 3rd June to 9th June the treatments will be carried out in the hamlets of Torremendo, Arneva and Hurchillo. Then from the 10th to

30th June, these works will continue in Orihuela city, while from 1st July 1 to 4th August they will focus on Orihuela Costa. The councillor was accompanied by Lidia Nájar, biologist responsible for the company Lokímica SA, winner of the disinfection contract for the municipality, who said that “these treatments are carried out in the municipal sewerage system, approximately 4 times a year, rotating starting in districts, the city and Orihuela Costa”. She added that “now the summer campaign is being developed, because with the increasing temperature it is always very important to maintain control”. Finally, Noelia Grao wanted to remind citizens of “the importance of keeping homes and outside areas in good condition to avoid trouble spots of insects, pests or rodents” at the same time she pointed out that people can contact the Department of Health by telephone on 965 305 983 or through the email: sanidad@orihuela.es to report any pest related incidents. Orihuela supports World No Smoking Day

The Councillor for Health, Noelia Grao, announced that the Health Department of Orihuela Town Hall is supporting World No Smoking Day, which takes place on 31st May. On the day the Community Prevention Unit in Addictive Behaviours of Orihuela (UPCCA) will have an information table in several of the local schools across the municipality to raise awareness about the dangers of consuming tobacco. “In 2019 this commemoration focuses on lung health and UPCCA staff will inform and advise students about the problems associated with smoking,” the Councillor said. In schools theoretical and practical workshops will be taught throughout the day for various groups, with which it is expected to reach more than 500 students. According to the UPCCA a Survey on Use of Drugs in Secondary Education in Spain (ESTUDES) undertaken in 2017 reported that 34.7 percent of students between 14 and 18 years have used tobacco in the last year, while 8.8 percent do it daily. In fact, Spain already has as many smokers as before the anti-smoking law of 2005 and its toughening in 2010, which led to a significant reduction in the number of smokers. Mireille Toddington

Coast still facing waste and rubbish problems

This week The Costa Blanca People heard from local residents who still feel the Coast has considerable issue with waste and rubbish collection. One resident, H. Wieme, who lives in Lomas de Cabo Roig says the Town Hall has been quick enough to embrace the recent investment in the Costa by businesses, but not to increase the services and infrastructure as required. H. Wieme said: “In Lomas de Cabo Roig we have a new Commercial Centre, two Chinese bazaars, a fuel station and a few new bars as new neighbours. They are all welcome, but what would be more welcome would be if Orihuela Town Hall does what is needed to reorganise the waste and glass containers in the area. Our administrators have asked several

times but nothing has changed. Even the waste service workers have informed the Town Hall more than once about the bad hygienic situation around this new commercial centre; but without success.” However, Lomas de Cabo Roig is not the only area to suffer from heaps of rubbish sitting by bins for weeks on end and residents are once again asking ‘why the Coast has such a low level of waste management and not enough recycling bins.’ H. Wieme said: “If we look at San Fulgencio, Rojales, Benijofar and Pilar de La Horadada it seems that a good waste management service is possible. I believe that Commercial Centres must have their own waste and glass bins away from resident houses, but this isn’t the

case in Lomas de Cabo Roig and at the moment they even place construction debris and boxes next to the inadequate waste containers. This then stays there for weeks. The daily amount of rubbish being left is considerable, let alone the weekly accumulation. “During the summer this debris smells awful when the waste containers are full, how people will sit outside to eat at home or on the restaurant terraces is beyond me. But the bars make it worse by dumping their food waste next to the containers! The dumped waste is a play area for cats, vermin, rodents and cockroaches through the night and the waste collection service will not pick up any waste that is placed next to the containers.

Rubbish bins Local residents are calling on the Town Hall to urgently issue guidelines for restaurants and bars in terms of when and how they can dispose of waste and to put services in place to make regular collections. The number of waste containers are also insufficient and additional ones are needed to cope with

the sheer volume of rubbish, as well as separate containers for commercial use. Residents are also confused as to why the waste containers have been placed next to the two car parking exits of the new commercial centres and obstructs and the exit of the underground parking. Locals fear that it is only a matter of time before this causes a car accident.

LANDMARK OCCASION IN ANIMAL WELFARE Rojales Council has confirmed that it has donated €6,000 to the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre, in addition, it is also committed to enforcing current laws and changing policy for a better future in animal welfare. Most people don’t realise that the Centre receives absolutely no funding whatsoever. Since coming to power the current Council has been a staunch supporter of the Rescue Centre. The councillors recognise the valuable resource that the Centre provides and continuously negotiate with the Valencian Government to encourage changes in animal welfare. Not just the issue of funding but also changes to the laws on animal welfare. The local government is committed to making this a yearly contribution with the added plan of working with other Councils to encourage them to do the same. Sue Weeding, Co-Founder said: “This is a truly inspirational act on the part of Rojales Council. The Mayor Antonio Perez Garcia and his delegates have been constant supporters and regular visitors to the Centre. We are incredibly grateful for these resources but also the commitment to encourage other Councils to do the same. We have taken in many animals not just from the local councils and Police in our area but from the north of Valencia to as far south as Granada in Andalucia. This commitment by Rojales Council is just the forward thinking approach needed to progress animal welfare in Spain.” The Council realise the huge service that EHCRC provides to the community, which now works mainly with the Police and Guardia Civil to offer advice and rescue of the most at risk, abused or neglected equines on a 24/7 basis. Spokesperson on behalf of the Mayor and the Council said: “The Town Hall of Rojales supports and appreciates the work of the Foundation Easy Horse Care Rescue and the great effort that is made in the care of horses, donkeys, ponies and other animals

that have been abused or abandoned. Without this commitment and solidarity from Susan and Rod, these animals would have to face a far worse destiny. Unfortunately, as public administrations we have serious difficulties in directly dealing with these issues. From our Town Hall we want to show our commitment to the Foundation, providing assistance and collaboration as much as possible, and we are very aware of the mistreatment and abandonment of animals, which unfortunately remains so present in our society. The Police want to remind everyone that abandonment and animal abuse are criminal offences in the Spanish penal code which can carry financial or prison sentences. We have trained police on our staff dedicated to the investigation of this type of crime, and we organize public talks and courses, which explain the issues on animal abandonment and abuse, and above all to raise awareness among people.” For more information on the rescue centre go to their website www.easyhorsecare.net Or visit the Rescue Centre on their open day the first Sunday of every month 1pm till 4pm.

Convictions for driving under the influence jump in Spain Preliminary data offered by Spain’s Attorney General’s Office show a 10 percent rise in just one year in convictions for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. These convictions grew to 56,173 in 2018, compared with 51,085 in 2017, representing 21 percent of all convictions for any kind of crime. More than 40 percent of drivers who died in traffic accidents had consumed alcohol or drugs. Pere Navarro, head of the DGT national traffic authority, has ruled out introducing tougher penalties for violators. “It’s not clear to me that the solution lies in higher penalties. “At some point we might have to do it, but we don’t support it,” he said last summer. Instead, Navarro said that the priority is to increase roadside checks to avoid “a feeling of impunity.” Such a rise would signal a change following deep cuts made under the previous administration of former Popular Party (PP) Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. Under Rajoy, alcohol breath tests were reduced by 20 percent on Spain’s roads. In 2013, the Civil Guard screened more than 6.4 million drivers to see if they had more than the legal limit of alcohol in their bloodstream. Three years later, there were 5.07 million tests, and in 2017 there were 5.18 million. “When it comes to alcohol, unlike other drugs, an increase in preventive testing shows no evidence of being effective once we have reached the goal of creating awareness among the general driving population,” said then-Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido. The drop in breathalyzer tests was accompanied by a reduction in Civil Guard officers on traffic duty. In September of last year, Navarro said that 250 more officers would start patrolling the roads in

October, and that another 400 would be added in 2019. Other violations Most court convictions for driving offences involve being under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the wheel, but they are not the only ones. In 2018, 28,868 drivers were found guilty of driving without a license, 2,797 refused to take a breathalyzer test, 872 were sanctioned for reckless driving, 450 for speeding, 60 for showing a manifest contempt for the lives of others (such as so-called kamikaze drivers), and 44 for other types of risky behaviour on the road. Last year, a total of 89,264 people were convicted of driving offences, representing 34 percent of all convictions for any crime. This is an 8.9 percent rise from 2017, but remains below the figure of 92,682 convictions in 2014. Meanwhile, road fatalities fell to 1,180 last year, compared with 1,198 in 2017.

NEW BEACH BARS OPEN

Luisa Boné, the city councillor for the beaches of Orihuela, together with Thomas Herteux, General Manager of the Bfun Group, have presented the new beach bar facilities that will be available on all Orihuela Costa beaches this summer. The new beach bars are already open on the beaches of Punta Prima, La Caleta and Cala Capitan (Cabo Roig), Cala Bosque and Cala Cerrada (La Zenia) and La Glea (Campoamor) and will soon be open on all of the other beaches. The City Councillor Boné emphasised the beauty of the local beaches with the renovation of all the facilities carried out this year. The beach bars have an inspirational design in white with shades of blue which appears on various features such as the counter and on the front of the chiringuitos, where you have a distinctive identification mark with the inscription Orihuela Costa. This symbol is meant to reflect the city on the beaches. In addition, all the furniture has been replaced and updated. The tables and chairs that sometimes contained advertising logos were removed and replaced by new ones with an appealing, modern design with no advertising of any kind. Different earth tones and colours were used in the composition for the furniture. The city councillor for the beaches said that “we have worked a lot on accessibility on our beaches, with the aim of offering services for everyone’s enjoyment. This year, for the first time, all the beach bar terraces have a platform, rather than all the tables

being in the sand. The menus will be available in Braille and for those who need it there will be table service.” Following the same design as the beach bars, all the toilets on the beaches have been renewed. The toilets have Braille plates with inscriptions for women, for men and those with limited mobility. These are small but very necessary steps to ensure beach accessibility for all. Councillor Boné said: “We are very happy with the work that has been done in just two years which has resulted in the improved image of the beaches. The beaches of our city are at a very high level and now have a very good reputation on an international level.” Thomas Herteux added: “We are very excited about the start of this new season. This year, Chiringuitos del Sol has prepared many novelties for all those who want to have fun on the beaches of Orihuela Costa. “We have completely renovated all the beach bars so that customers can enjoy state-ofthe-art facilities with exceptional design.” Senor Herteux was keen to point out that they “will expand the calendar of leisure events with more live music, sports championships and a wide range of nautical activities. All this will be achieved without ignoring our commitment to the environment and this year, once again Chiringuitos del Sol will undertake a variety of activities specifically designed to raise awareness and care of nature for the whole family.”

Edamame shortage in Spain

A staple ingredient in vegetarian and vegan ready meals and restaurant menus in many western countries, edamame has only just found its way to the vegetable counters of supermarkets in Spain. But after advertising it as a tasty snack that helps you lose weight without trying, stores across the country have run out just as fast as they began to stock it. A young, unripe soya bean consumed in its pod, edamame is normally boiled or steamed, with or without salt, and eaten whole, meaning no peeling, chopping or other preparation is required and they can be ready in two or three minutes. They are filling and full of flavour, but with no fat, minimal carbohydrates and very few calories, meaning serial fridge-raiders can chomp them all day long without worrying too much about putting on

extra pounds, or kilos. Edamame pods have followed the same trail as aloe vera, green tea, quinoa and avocado as low-fat, high-nutrition foodstuffs that have made their way around the world onto the plates and into the cups of those who seek optimum health benefits from their diet. Until now, other than in Asian restaurants - and even then, very rarely - edamame beans have rarely been seen in Spain, but no sooner have they started to appear on supermarket shelves, they have vanished faster than the chains can restock them. Carlos Ríos, founder of the Spanish movement Realfooding, contacted Mercadona when he was unable to buy his usual supply. He tagged them on Twitter with the message: “Let the Edamame Hunger Games commence!” They replied to his tweet with: “We are currently out of stock and, over the course of the coming summer, we will once again be offering this product in our stores. We apologise for any inconvenience. We have taken your comments on board and shared them with those in charge of this product. Best regards.” A flood of tweets followed from all over the country, with one - presumably tongue-in-cheek claiming her daughter was crying because her usual poke-bowl was short of these magic beans. El Corte Inglés supermarkets, catching onto the Edamame Hunger Games theme, posted a photograph of a scene from the film with the caption: “We've got them!” Other consumers on Twitter have said that the hunt is now on and urging people to stockpile their freezers so they can survive until summer when Mercadona gets some more. It has not been confirmed whether other major national chains such as Carrefour and Mas y Mas have been stocking them. If El Corte Inglés runs out before then, Spain’s newfound Realfooders may have to switch to another almost-calorie-free munching snack, such as celery, cucumbers or carrots, all of which are in stock practically year-round in Spanish stores.

Valencian chef to open paella restaurant in London

Valencia-based celebrity chef Quique Dacosta’s London restaurant is set to open on 7th June in the up-market Fitzroy neighbourhood, offering dishes largely based on the region’s star recipe: paella. Dacosta, who has three Michelin stars and two eponymous restaurants in Valencia city and in Dénia - the latter of which was once named the top eatery in Spain - says his new premises at 64 Eastcastle Street in the UK capital is his first venture abroad. “I’m very excited about being able to bring part of our tradition and cuisine to one of the five biggest capital cities in the world,” Dacosta says. Its name says it all – Arròs QD – being the valenciano word for rice, followed by the chef’s initials. What non-Spaniards often term paella is better known to Valencians as rice dishes, of which there are literally hundreds of recipes, paella making up just a handful of them and being probably the mostassociated with Spanish food outside the country. The extent of Dacosta’s menu at his new London premises will give British diners an idea of just how many paellas really exist a two-hour flight from their doorstep. Other dishes will be served, of course - a selection of bespoke starters, vegetables, fish and roasted meat, plus dessert, using both Valencia rice and UK produce. The wine list will be replete with Spanish varieties as well as from elsewhere in the world, helping to give wine from Spain a much-needed boost in the UK,

where the only name really known is Rioja and where other varieties tend to be unbranded and cheap, giving an incorrect impression of the country’s huge array of home-made drinks. Also on the drinks front, creative versions of classical cocktails will be served up in the exclusive lounge-bar area. The restaurant is 1,000 square metres and has space for up to 140 diners on two floors and in four different settings. Customers will be able to see the rice dishes being cooked on a wood fire before they eat. Quique Dacosta is widely held to be one of the greatest experts in rice dishes on earth and published a book in 2005, Arroces contemporáneos (Contemporary rice dishes). His Dénia restaurant, which used to be called El Poblet after the bar complex it sits next to, but which was renamed Restaurante Quique Dacosta, a few years ago, has twice won the Best European Restaurant Award granted by Opinionated About Dining, and has rarely been out of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list - even topping it on one occasion. He famously featured in an episode of Gordon Ramsay’s Costa del Nightmares, a Mediterranean spinoff of his Hell’s Kitchen, in which he took the owners of an eatery in Els Poblets - the next town north of Dénia -to Dacosta’s premises to learn silver service waiting skills.

Royal British Legion honours Ignacio Ramos On Sunday, the day of the Municipal Elections here in Spain, Ignacio Ramos completed a 32-year career as councillor, 20 of them as mayor of Pilar de la Horadada. When Ignacio first took office the municipality had about 9,000 residents and only nine years had elapsed since its segregation, its independence from the municipality of Orihuela Now the population exceeds 20,000 people, many thousands of whom are expatriates. During his period a mayor one of his main achievements has been the diversification of the local economy into different sectors. During times of economic prosperity he has supported the construction of tourist housing on the coast, in Mil Palmeras, La Torre del Pilar, the golf course at Lo Romero and Pinar de Campoverde. He has also played a very important part in the reinforcement of the very important greenhouse agricultural production in the area that is dedicated to international markets. Hence two of the main reasons why the people of Pilar de la Horadada and its municipality enjoy such prosperity. The mayor has always been a great champion of the expatriate population in the town and in the last 10 years

he has been a major benefactor of the Royal British Legion, instrumental in its use on Remembrance Sunday of the Capilla de las Mil Palmeras, an event that he has always supported by his attendance. He was also instrumental in the creation of the Garden of Remembrance in front of the parish church to which he and his council have made regular improvements, completely refurbishing the area in the last 12 months so that it is now it is a place where people can sit quietly and remember their loved ones in quiet reflection. The Orihuela Costa and District Branch of The Royal British Legion is deeply

indebted to Ignacio Ramos for the support he has provided during his tenure of office, and as a mark of appreciation a small presentation was made by members at their May meeting, of the Pulitzer prize winning book, The Guns of August, written by Barbara W. Tuchman, to thank him for his loyal an valuable patronage over the last ten years. The photograph shows the mayor and his successor, Pilar Samper, along with Vice Chairman, Eddie Coleman, Membership Secretary, Walter Montfort and Branch member Louise Innes, who is also the Chair of the Mil Palmeras residents Association.

Stagestruck success The Stagestruck summer show Strictly X Factor proved to be a roaring success, and they have been overwhelmed by the reaction from audiences. Written and directed by Suzanne Stokes, the story of how the Bragton Village Hall Committee tried to save the building by raising money with a talent show had comedy, pathos and wonderfully professional singing and dancing. The production numbers were

astonishing with exciting dance routines and special lighting effects by Robert Stokes, who travelled all the way from the UK to do the show. A video is being prepared and a link to YouTube will be available soon. The show raised 3,500 euros for Alzheimer’s and donations will also be made to other local charities. This talented company are already making early preparations for Cinderella, their Christmas pantomime!

Jobs at Mercadona Mercadona supermarkets are seeking new employees in practically every store in Spain for the summer and have started advertising already. With a series of store revamps ongoing across the country, involving expansions and new services, the chain has been advertising for permanent staff every month this year, but as always, will take on additional, temporary employees for the high season. Year-round, over 90 percent of Mercadona employees are on permanent job contracts, and the starting salary for the first year is €1,328 gross per month, rising to nearly €1,500 by the third year. For most roles, applicants do not need prior experience, as full training will be given on the job, and the only qualifications required are the ESO (Spain's answer to GCSEs) or the equivalent. Non-Spaniards seeking to work there will, of course, need to be able to speak and understand Spanish, although if they live in cosmopolitan areas, it is likely the addition of their native language would be considered a bonus. Positions are offered this month, fulltime, for shelf-stackers, cashiers, delicatessen, meat and fish counters, delivery workers and storeroom workers, along with jobs in the logistics centres. Offers are open in nearly every province, including in San Isidro (Alicante province), Sabadell, Caldes de Montbui, Ripollet, Sant Feliu de Llobregat, Esplugues de Llobregat, Rubí, Sant Cugat dels Vallès, Granollers and Mollet del Vallès (Barcelona province), Olot (Girona province), Ibiza town, Campos and Sa

Pobla in the Balearic Islands, Paterna (Valencia province), Fuengirola, Marbella and Málaga (Málaga province), Bormujos (Sevilla province), Calafell (Tarragona province), Tarazona (Zaragoza province), and in the Greater Madrid region, in Las Rozas, Majadahonda, Pozuelo de Alarcón, Valdemorillo, Villanueva del Pardillo, Mejorada del Campo, RivasVaciamadrid, San Martín de Valdeiglesias and El Álamo. Other provinces with jobs up for grabs are A Coruña and Ourense, in Galicia; Zamora, Valladolid and León (Castilla y León); Álava and Guipúzcoa (Basque Country); Cuenca, Toledo and Ciudad Real (Castilla-La Mancha); and the regions of Navarra, Asturias and La Rioja. Part-time jobs cover Friday, Saturday and Monday – Mercadona's policy is never to open on a Sunday – a total of 20 hours for a gross monthly salary of €663, or for 15 hours with a gross monthly

salary of €497. The Paterna (Valencia) jobs are in the co-innovation centre for packaging technicians, implantation technicians, online communication and online marketing or sales, with a starting fulltime salary of €22,722 gross per year rising to €34,494 within three years. As at the end of 2018, chairman and founder Juan Roig reported that he had 85,000 employees in the group, having created 1,800 new permanent jobs after sales rose by 6 percent. For 2019, Roig predicts sales increases of 3.7 percent, reaching an annual turnover of €25.2 billion, and to be able to take on a further 1,000 extra permanent staff. Most stores offer online sales with a delivery option, or delivery can be arranged at the check-out counter. Next month, a logistics-come-delivery centre will open in Barcelona, in the Zona Franca, which will employ 300 people.

Arthritis drug withdrawn for over50s due to lung clot risk Health authorities in Spain have ordered restrictions on the use of a drug prescribed for rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis for the over-50s due to the possible risk of a pulmonary embolism, or blood clot on the lungs. In conjunction with the Spanish Agency for Medications and Healthcare Products (AEMPS), the ministry of health has reviewed the risk-benefit balance of Tofacitinib – a process where the likelihood of sideeffects is weighed up against the potential benefits of a drug, to determine whether it should be prescribed – and considers that the typical twice-daily dose of 10 milligrams must not be taken by anyone aged 50 or over. Clinical trials to evaluate the safety of Tofacitinib have found that the risk of pulmonary embolism, which can be sudden and fatal if not caught in time but which does not always show notable symptoms, is too high above a certain age, and that the medication also heightens the danger of at least one other cardiovascular incident. Health minister María Luisa Carcedo says Tofacitinib will be withdrawn for anyone aged 50 or over, but the risk is not found to be significant enough to do in younger patients. This is a temporary move until further testing can be carried

out. Anyone currently taking Tofacitinib and who is around the age of 50 or older should immediately make an appointment with their GP to arrange for another type of medication to be prescribed. Sra Carcedo says patients should not abruptly stop their treatment before their doctor's appointment, however, unless they have noticed signs of possible adverse effects. If any symptoms that share characteristics with those of a blood clot on the lungs are noticed, patients should immediately head for A&E either at their nearest hospital or walkin clinic. These signs can include shortness of breath, which may come on very suddenly; sharp chest pain which suddenly appears and becomes worse with coughing or breathing deeply: faster-than-usual

heartbeat; faster breathing; sweating; anxiety; fainting or feeling faint; and coughing up blood or pink, foamy mucus. Sometimes, pain or swelling in one or both legs, usually in the calf, can occur, depending upon which lung artery is blocked. Many of these warning signs, however, even several together, may be an indication of a much more harmless condition – shortness of breath, sweating, fast breathing or heartbeat, chest pains and feeling faint are all consistent with a panic attack, for example – so patients should try not to worry unduly. But they should still seek immediate medical attention as a precaution, even if they know they already suffer panic attacks. If a pulmonary embolism is caught in time, it can be treated relatively swiftly, but without medical attention, can quickly be fatal.

Podemos attacks Zara owner’s healthcare donation The Spanish anti-austerity party Podemos has questioned donations made by Inditex founder Amancio Ortega to Spain’s public healthcare system. The business mogul – who, with a fortune of €56 billion, according to Forbes magazine, is Spain’s richest man – promised in 2017 to donate €320 million through the Amancio Ortega Foundation so that public hospitals across Spain could buy new equipment to diagnose and treat cancer patients. However, the Podemos candidate for the Madrid regional elections, Isa Serra, argued that the public health system should not accept the donation in an interview last week with the radio network Cadena SER. In a message on Twitter, she explained her position: “The public healthcare system cannot accept donations from Amancio Ortega. It should be funded with taxes. The same ones Inditex avoids and evades. €600 million in three years.” There is no proof that Inditex, the parent company of fashion labels such as Zara, Bershka and Oysho, avoids paying

taxes using legal means common to transnational corporations such as Facebook and Google. But in 2016, The Greens-European Free Alliance group presented the European Union with a report accusing the company of using its subsidiaries in the Netherlands, Ireland and Switzerland to avoid paying €585 million in taxes between 2011 and 2014. Inditex rejected the findings and maintained that the study was “seriously” wrong. The question over whether the public health system should accept donations from Spain’s wealthiest man has since become a hot topic. Ciudadanos (Citizens) candidate Ignacio Aguado said refusing donations “only benefits the ego and the sectarianism of those who propose it,” while Serra insisted “the public healthcare system cannot depend on the charity or mood of billionaires.” The leader of Ciudadanos, Albert Rivera, said Serra should “look in the eyes of a cancer patient” and tell them that “your ideological sectarianism does not allow you to accept these donations.”

Serra, who has been supported by Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias, argued that the other problem with donations is that they are “finalistic.” In other words, “they do not come from an expert analysis that studies where the resources should be distributed. This leads to inequalities and first- and second-class patients and illnesses,” she wrote on Twitter. In an article on the Spanish online newspaper El Español, Ciudadanos deputy Francisco de la Torre, who is a tax inspector by trade, replied that it is the health department that decides where the money goes, arguing: “You spend less money on buying hospital equipment that is given to you … honestly, you don’t need to study a master’s degree to know this.” The PP candidate for Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, has called on Serra to apologise for her statements on Ortega’s donations. Acting Finance Minister María Jesús Montero, from the Socialist Party (PSOE), argued that a fair tax system is “not incompatible” with business donations to “services that are for all citizens.” The government added that it is planning on raising minimum taxes for large corporations to 15 percent. Amancio Ortega Foundation Since 2015, the Amancio Ortega Foundation has been supporting a program to help provide public hospitals with new equipment to treat and diagnose cancer. When the €320-million donation was announced in 2017, it was warmly welcomed by patients and the healthcare sector. Public hospitals in Madrid, for instance, urgently need new new equipment. According to an investigation by EL PAÍS last March, 40% of high-tech equipment is more than 10 years old.

Tech Fact

DID YOU KNOW?

Vic via email asks: After a long Windows Update all I get now when I start my laptop is a blue screen with “Something Happened” and a “close” button. I haven’t clicked anything yet as I’m worried I might lose all of my photos and documents. Aunty Says: Hello Vic. This is not an uncommon problem with Windows Updates, and clicking the close button should hopefully restart your laptop and return it prior to the dodgy Windows Update. David via email asks: Whenever I plug my any of my USB memory sticks into my computer I get blue screen with a load of white writing flash quickly on the screen and then my laptop restarts. The USB stick works OK on

my daughter’s laptop so I’m guessing it is the laptop. It is a 9 year old Toshiba running XP. Aunty Says: Hello David. It certainly sounds like a problem with the laptop, and as it is 9 years old and Windows XP has long been retired I would suggest getting a new one. You can get a reasonably god spec one for around €350. All makes/models in this price range are pretty much the same but I would go for a minimum of 15.6” screen, at least 4GB RAM and a minimum of 500B hard disk. It will come in Spanish but I know Enet Computers will convert everything over to English plus transfer data from your old computer, give them a cal on 687362844. John via email asks: Hi Aunty. I have been using

Ccleaner for years and I have never had any problems. The only thing that does concern me is recently when I run Registry Tool I see a lot more entries and I’m not sure if I should delete all of them. Most of them are MUI files and unused file extensions. Aunty Says: I steer well clear of any cleanup program that wants to access and edit my Windows registry purely because I have witnessed so many messed up computers. The Windows registry is a huge, complex and very delicate database that stores absolutely everything Windows needs to know to run properly and it only takes one slight error and your computer can be rendered useless. The files you are finding are harmless and take up very little room so best leave them be. Certainly let Ccleaner clear any temp files if it finds them. John from Los Balcones asks; Dear Aunty. How can I change the size of the pointer of my mouse as my wife is always complaining she cannot make it out on our laptop? I just have standard USB mouse. Aunty Says; Hi John. Type MOUSE into the search bar (bottom left) and a new window will popup. You should then see an option on the right “Additional Mouse Options” and here you can set all kinds of options. Email me your questions to auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com and I will see you all next week

Running into Traffic! We all know that running is a great way of keeping fit, but within the urban landscape of towns and cities, the risk factor can increase, not from sporting injuries, but from runners choosing to mix with traffic. According to a recent survey conducted by the Ministry of Health approximately a third of all adults in Spain choose to perform some form of sporting activity in their spare time. Of the many sports on offer, running is becoming increasingly popular, but some 30% of those who defined themselves as runners practice their activity on the roads or pavements. One of the biggest risks identified during running, not unlike driving, is distractions, and in particular due to a lack of special awareness caused by listening to music through headphones. Another risk, again similar to all road users, is that of visibility, with many runners choosing to take to the roads during the latter part of the day, but without wearing high visibility clothing. However, it is possible for runners to move harmoniously through the streets, enjoying that urban landscape and improving their fitness at the same time. To that end, the DGT has published their top tips for runners, and for drivers, in the hope of reducing the risks. Top Tips for Runners If you run on the road always keep to the left hard shoulder, facing oncoming traffic. If you run in the city remember that the pavement is designed for pedestrians to move at walking pace, therefore give plenty of room when

passing pedestrians. Be aware of your surroundings at all times; beware of vehicle access and egress points. Vehicles that leave garages for example usually anticipate the possibility of pedestrians, but not necessarily runners. Anticipate these situations! Be seen at all times, especially near junctions and crossings. Make sure it is safe to cross before you do so. Wear reflective clothing, especially if you run during reduced light or bad weather conditions. If you wear sunglasses, make sure you take them off if the light begins to fade. Beware of the surface beneath your feet. If it has been raining there may be slippy patches. However, dry ground can also be slippy when covered with loose rubble. Beware of distractions! Do not wear headphones that isolate you from ambient noise: they prevent you from

hearing what is happening around you, and do not use your mobile phone while running: it will distract you from traffic and its dangers. At traffic lights, remember that even though you are running you are still a pedestrian. Press the button at the crossing if there is one, and wait for the green signal before crossing. Be alert at all times. Towards the end of a run you may start to feel tired, which could lead to distractions. Of course vehicle drivers also need to be alert. If you are a driver, be prepared for the unexpected. Reduce your speed and exercise extreme caution at pedestrian crossings or their vicinity, garage exits, junctions etc, and always be prepared to stop if needed. Make sure your vehicle is in prime condition, as you never do know when a surprise might arise and you need to stop quickly. Be prepared.

Choosing your ITV Station Following on from our recent article explaining some of the facts relating to the ITV inspection, one question is still continuing to crop up. The question relates to vehicles which are registered in the Valencia region and their eligibility to have the test carried out in Murcia, for example. As we explained, according to the information provided by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism of the Spanish Government, article 17 of Royal Decree 920/2017, of October 23, states that a vehicle owner is free to choose the ITV station in the national territory wherever they desire to have the technical inspection of vehicles performed. It is true that in 2004 the Valencia region approved a law which adds elements to the test in the region, but that does not take away from the freedom to choose represented by the

national law. If you take your vehicle to a testing station in the Valencia region the test will comprise of more elements, but the resulting pass will give you the same certificate as in the Murcia region. We can explain this further by showing how there are also price differences in some parts of the country, and so one could argue that it is unfair that the cost may differ. However, article 19 of the same Royal Decree, which deals with inspection fees, states two things. Firstly that the tariff regime will be established by the autonomous community, so Valencia or Murcia for example, and secondly that the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness will periodically publish the prices in order to facilitate the free choice of ITV test centres. So again, you can see, according to the law you are free to shop around from region to region.

New slimline Corsa Startling increases in Vauxhall has confirmed that the new Corsa supermini, soon to be revealed, has shed up to 108kg from the outgoing model. That dramatic weight loss is due to the new CMP platform that underpins it - something that Vauxhall can thank its Groupe PSA overlords for. Vauxhall also points out that the lightest new Corsa model weighs 980kg. The news comes as the first teasers drop for the new small car, destined to be re-launched this year not just in ICE formats but as an EV, too. A full suite of petrol Corsas will follow, but Vauxhall and its European wing Opel are firmly pointing the spotlight on the first electric Corsa, a car designed to make a splash in the burgeoning EV space. One sole photograph has been issued first, before the full set of official pictures. It depicts a shadowy detail of the new 2019 Corsa's IntelliLux LED headlamp, a first for the small supermini sector. They are capable of remaining on full beam, actively shuttering off the light in segments to avoid dazzling oncoming drivers. It's a technology more often seen on executive cars. What else can we expect of the fourth-generation Vauxhall Corsa?

The new Corsa will go on sale later in 2019 - and the electric model will be sold alongside the Grandland X plug-in hybrid PHEV. Vauxhall is really pushing electrification as the ‘next big thing’ for its product plan. No official details are available yet on the electric Corsa, but petrol heads expect a battery capacity of around 50kWh - enough for a 200-

mile range. The new 2019 Corsa has already been caught on test and spies in the car world report a conventionally packaged supermini to take the fight to the Ford Fiesta and VW Polo. It is likely that Vauxhall will drop the threedoor body style to concentrate on more practical five-door models. It'll be based on the PSA smallcar hardware called CMP, now that the French manufacturing group has bought GM Europe's car-

making business. That means the new 2019 Vauxhall Corsa will share its oily (and sparky) bits with the upcoming generations of Peugeot 208 and Citroen C3. Expect to see the PureTech downsized petrol engines, most likely the threecylinder 1.2 available in different states of tune and we expect a 1.5 diesel to be offered too (though it may be dropped for right-hand drive UK sales). 'As a British Brand since 1903, in fact, Britain’s oldest car Brand, Vauxhall has always been known for bringing cutting-edge technology to the mainstream, at an affordable price,' said Stephen Norman, Vauxhall’s group managing director. 'And with the all-new Corsa, we’re doing it not once, but twice, by electrifying the UK’s best-known supermini, and adding lighting technology normally only found in premium cars.' Vauxhall Corsa: millions of sales Vauxhall has sold 2.1 million Corsas in the UK since 1993. Across Europe, make that 13.5m. So electrifying this popular small car seems like a clever step propelling Vauxhall from also-ran to class-competitive at a stroke.

criminal behaviour The office of the Attorney General has released advanced information relating to offences committed on the roads in 2018, revealing that alcohol and drug use is the most common crime. During 2018, the Public Prosecutor's Office opened a total of 110,651 criminal proceedings for crimes against road safety, a figure that represents an increase with respect to 2017, in which 96,303 openings were registered. The report from the Public Prosecutor shows that of all crimes against road safety dealt with last year, 62% are for consumption of alcohol or drugs before driving, with 69,121 criminal cases. This is also the crime against road safety that has grown the most with respect to 2017, with 9,656 more cases. There are also 2,013 open processes for the refusal of drivers to undergo blood alcohol tests, almost 200 more than in 2017. This increase has also led to an increase in the number of sentences for these two crimes. In 2018, a total of

56,473 prison sentences were handed down to drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, compared to 50,552 the previous year; In addition, 2,797 people refused to take the test, 356 more than those sentenced a year earlier. The figure implies that the message is still not getting through as to the dangers of alcohol and drugs when driving, and is now in line with statistics from a decade ago. It is important to note that this figure relates to an excessive consumption of either alcohol, drugs, or both, so that it warrants being dealt with by criminal proceedings with prison a likely result, rather than lesser, though still very serious administrative offences which result in a fine.

There has also been an increase in the number of people found driving without a licence, or lacking the correct one. Driving without a licence is also a criminal offence and in 2018 there were a total of 36,646 cases recorded, resulting in 28,868 sentences, compared to 30,875 in 2017, which represents an almost 20% increase. There has also been an increase in the number of drivers recorded at an excessive speed, again at such an extent that it warrants criminal proceedings. A total of 842 drivers appeared before a judge to explain the reason for driving at such as excess of speed, and there has also been an increase in the number of reckless driving cases with 2,761 complaints in 2018, compared to 1,553 in 2017.

PHOENIX CAR CLUB VISIT THE GUNS AT MAZARRÓN The Phoenix Car Club’s monthly drive took the members to the big guns at Mazarrón. The route via the AP7 and Cantares was straightforward but from then on things took on a whole new perspective when the E22 and the RME23 to the guns dealt up some superb roads with spectacular views over the sea and the town of Mazarrón to the west. The guns at the Batería de Castillitos date back to the 1930’s when the two big guns, built by Vickers in the UK, were installed as protection against possible attack on the port of Cartagena. The barrels of these guns are 59ft long with a 15” calibre and a range of 22 miles (35km). Nearer the sea and a further 2km walk is the Batería de Jorel which features three 12” guns with a range of 12.5 miles. There is some debate as to whether these guns featured in the famous war film, The Guns Of Navarone, and no amount of research has produced a definitive answer but, one way or another,

the guns of Mazarrón are well worth a visit. The road to the guns is fairly narrow and parking is restricted so a midweek visit is advisable to avoid the possible congestion at weekends. Visiting the guns and parking is

Tales from the Top Flight ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Dear reader, it’s been a weird week in football. With no Premier League action for at least a few weeks (they do start rather early these days, don’t they?) and with the Champions League and Europa League finals still days away the mainstream media have been scrambling around trying to come up with anything that could make less-rubbish-than-usual copy. And when Manchester United are in another alleged crisis, they always grease the wheels to at least something getting published. If you are a footballer with some kind of potential and you are not currently drawing a wage from Old Trafford there is half-a-chance that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has you in his sights as he desperately tries to return United to their days of Ferguson.

You see, back then United would bring in the very best young talent and give them the greatest stage on which to perform. You think back to Roy Keane, Paul Ince, Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand et al. All young players with a hunger to be the very best and where better to become that than under the guidance of Sir Alex? The thing is, when those eventual superstars rocked up at OT they were greeted by a changing room full of winners. Players who were there to win more than they had already won and not ones to suffer footballing fools gladly. So a warning shot to Matthijs De Ligt, Ryan Sessegnon, Sean Longstaff, Daniel James, Ben Gibson and every other young talent being linked to multimillion moves to the Theatre of Former Dreams. You won’t exactly be spoiled for choice when it comes to role models. There’s no Steve Bruce. Or Gary Neville. Or Peter Schmeichel. Or Bryan Robson. Or Eric Cantona. Or any of the others, really. On one hand, it is great to see Solskjaer still sticking to the Ferguson manual of management; he must be up to about page 86 now. But just buying the best young talent this summer isn’t going to be enough – though pinching De Ligt from underneath Barcelona’s nose might just start something interesting. There’s not been a great deal to report from Liverpool as they prepared for the Champions League final by heading out to Marbella for some warm-weather training. The good

news for the Reds is that a bit of sun as done enough for Bobby Firmino to declare himself fit. Tottenham have opted to remain in Enfield where a bit of good old fashioned May weather has done enough for Harry Kane to throw himself into contention for a start in Madrid. But, the build-up to Tottenham’s biggest ever match has been put to one side as the attention surrounded one man and one man only; Mauricio Pochettino. The Poch’s quick quip that Real Madrid has said ‘no’ to his request to train and sleep at their complex as they wouldn’t let him in ‘until he was their manager’ went down like the proverbial lead balloon in the laugh-a-minute Bernabeu. Real were quick to release an official statement saying that they had

Matthijs De Ligt never said no to any request like that, and I guess nobody bothered to tell them it was a joke. You’d have thought Florentino was used to comedy by now, having had to watch his team all season. It wasn’t just lost-in-translation gags flying around Spurs HQ. Poch has also caught the eye of those that do the

business in Turin. Spurs may have seen off both United and Real but they might have to strap themselves in for a summer of Juventus making eyes at their manager. But, Juventus are keeping their options open. Having politely asked whether Pep Guardiola would consider getting away from all those awkward questions he’s been getting in press conferences and being told ‘not unless you are any good at breaking the FFP rules’, Juve have been drawing a shortlist which appears to be down to just two men now. Pochettino is joined on that list by none other than soon-tobe-departing-you’d-assume Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri. That’s right. Juventus don’t appear to be too put off by the fact that, at the time of writing, Sarri is still yet to win a trophy in his career. They were put off, however, by the wage demands of Jose Mourinho, surprisingly still available after Celtic gave the job to Neil Lennon. Mourinho was given the Cristiano Ronaldo seal of approval and then managed to alienate the Juve bigwigs by being just that little bit too greedy. That doesn’t sound like Jose, right? He’s in it for the love of the game, no? Of course, this is all an unwelcome distraction for Sarri ahead of Wednesday night’s kick off in Baku. Sarri has made it clear that if his Chelsea future is all hinging on him winning against Arsenal then they may as well sack him now – exactly what Juve are waiting for as they’d rather not give

Roman Abramovich £5m for a manager who is on his last legs. More worrying than the prospect of losing Sarri for most Chelsea fans is the news that N’Golo Kante broke down in training on Sunday and could well be out of the Europa League final. Sure, sure, he’s not played a single minute in his actual position this season but with Ruben Loftus-Cheek also unavailable Chelsea might be forced to give Kovacic a whole 90 minutes and that would never do. Arsenal are preparing for the final in their own way, of course. They’ve carefully navigated Arsene Wenger tactfully appearing for interviews in the build-up and they’ve opted not to make a massive song-and-dance over the fact that Micky-T has chosen not to travel to Baku because nobody seems too bothered about his safety. Rumours that Arsenal’s decision not to kick up a stink are because it saves Unai Emery having to tell the Armenian he’s been too rubbish this season to be selected are completely unfounded. Man City are just casually waiting by the phone to learn whether UEFA have balls big enough to kick them out of the Champions League next season. I think we all know the answer to that one. So, by the time you next read something I’ve written we’ll finally have the answer to the question hanging over all of us. Who will be more unbearable if they win the Champions League? Liverpool or Tottenham fans. I know who I am backing, but I’m not telling you.

Your week in Sport ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

You’d think someone would have realised, wouldn’t you? England have been preparing for this Cricket World Cup 2019 ever since Bangladesh humiliated us by sending us home early in 2015. We’ve prepared pretty well, all things considered. After all, we are currently top of the world rankings. We have the most feared batting lineup in world cricket. We can even afford to bring in a 90mph speedster at the last minute to boost our already more than ample bowling attack. We smashed Pakistan, winners of the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, in our final series before this great event is due to get underway. It’s almost fair to say no more preparation was needed. So why, oh why, were we playing Australia in a “practice” match in Southampton on Saturday? OK, had we beaten them you could argue that any chance to stick the boot in to our biggest cricketing rivals should not be turned down. But what we have ended up doing is handing the advantage to the Aussies. Let’s give Steve Smith the chance to get used to some of the terrible banter he is likely to get for the first few matches of the tournament. Better still, let’s help him get used to English conditions by serving him up a ton. Better than even that, let’s let the Australians actually beat us so their mentality of “we’re better than England no matter how good they think they are” actually has some

validation. If that wasn’t enough, let’s get a few injuries along the way as well. In training the day before, skipper Eoin Morgan managed to get a small finger fracture meaning he sat out Saturday’s farce. Mark Wood is never too far away from breaking down injured and, guess what? Wood pulled up lame when bowling meaning that David Willey’s broken heart might get a chance to mend itself sooner than he would have expected. Jofra Archer was supposed to have been able to put his feet up on Saturday and instead found himself on for Wood and chasing down the ball heading to the bonudary. Archer slipped, looked like he’d hurt himself and was also taken off the field as another “precaution”. Joe Root was delighted as he hadn’t expected to get kitted up and found himself getting an unwanted game. Better still, England coach Paul Collingwood, well into his fifth decade, found himself needed in the field wearing someone else’s shirt. It all started to feel somewhat village. England were ready. They didn’t need this game. They didn’t even really need the one against Afghanistan on Monday (which will have probably been played by the time you read this). They could only really lose from Saturday and they managed to do that with aplomb. Never, ever forget. No matter what the ODI rankings say there is still the small matter of going out and winning eleven (I think) games of cricket to win the tournament. And I can certainly think of a few other countries more used to doing that than us.

San Miguel Golf Society Liverpool FC vs Tottenham In theory a shotgun start should begin with a big bang but 33 members and 8 guests fired off their opening tee-shots in eerie silence, an ominous sign that the Noise Abatement Society has a Spanish branch. A combination of calm, warm conditions and kindly pin positions meant that high scoring was a strong possibility and so it proved with the winners of each of the three divisions giving par a skelp in the ear. The Vikings conquered swathes of England, France and Russia (Scottish editor’s note: they lost to the Scots at the Battle of Largs 1263). To this list we can add Vistabella after our own Viking – Norwegian Kyree Skarsmoen – topped the scoring with a whopping 42 points. An incredible achievement but sadly 5 points shy of the All Bandit Comers record of 47 shot earlier this year. Mick Roscoe’s 39 was

wonderful too, especially noteworthy for churning out eleven 3’s on his card. Consistently scoring net par after net par has earned him the moniker “The Grinder”. Barry Lane’s impressive 38 seemed rather paltry in the circumstances but well done to him and the other prize-winners. At the presentation, the ego of Gold Division players needed serious massaging after it emerged that none of them managed to get on the green at the par 3 11th. The pain of the elite was palpable (as was the sniggering of the lower orders). Winning results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 4th Mike Jordan (35 on CB), 3rd Keith Wickham (36 on CB), 2nd Norman Padmore (36 on CB), 1st Mick Roscoe (39) Silver Category: 4th Rod Wilcox (34), 3rd David Gibson (35),

2nd Brian Mulligan (37), 1st Kyree Skarsmoen (42) Gold Category: 4th Hugh Reilly (32), 3rd David Alderdice (37), 2nd Denis Ryan (37 on CB) and 1st Barry Lane with 38 points. Nearest the pins (sponsored by Property Shop): Hole 2 John Rose, Hole 7 Kyree Skarsmoen, Hole 15 Norman Cahill Abacus (sponsored by Mike Kaylor’s IPTV): Adrian Roberts Best Guest: Andy McDonald (38). Second Best Guest: Keith Little (33 on CB). Third Best Guest: Mike Jones (33 on CB) Our thanks go to all staff at Vistabella for their contribution to the day. Next week we will be at Altoreal, then on following weeks at Villamartin and Lo Romero. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Captain Tony Smale a call on 628227687.
