WALK FOR LIFE 2019 S

unday (2nd June) saw more than 420 people completed this year’s annual 5k Walk for Life organised by Maria and the Pink Ladies in aid of anti-cancer charity the AECC.

The event was the biggest of recent years as hundreds flocked to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the flagship fundraising event, see the walkers set off and return and also to enjoy the fun atmosphere and afternoon of entertainment. It cost just â‚Ź5 to enter and this donation along with any sponsorship Continued on page 4

It was a perfect day and the sun shone across blue skies at Playa Flamenca beach front as the crowds gathered to support the event. Everyone, walkers and supporters, dressed head to toe in pink....men, women, children and dogs! And the

result was visually impressive...as was the 6,595.58 euros that was raised by the event. However, organisers are confident that this figure will increase over the next week or so as sponsorship money is collected and a final total will be announced shortly.

Plague of mosquitos An operation to reduce the number of mosquitos around the lakes is currently taking place following a rise in the number seen and felt in the Torretas’ urbanisations. The company responsible for tackling the plague have sent out workers to target the areas where they are breeding. The problem has been exacerbated by the recent rainfall which, combined with the rise in temperatures, makes for perfect breeding conditions for the mosquitos. The heavy rainfall at the end of April led to almost two hundred litres per square metres of water. The accumulation of this fresh water has been largely responsiblefor the plague. One of the main targets for treatment is the larvae which can be treated effectively without harming other insects and wildlife in their natural habitat. The workers enter the water and tackle the mosquito larvae before they turn into adults. The treatment includes the use of

biological products as the company is not allowed to use chemical products in this sensitive and important natural environment. Vehicles with spray guns and people with sprinklers have been out in the streets of the Torretas. There have also been workers spraying the ditches created to hold rain water during the floods. These areas have also seen an accumulation of water and consequently an increase in mosquitos. The company treating the pest is Compañía de TratamientosLevante (CTL) who have been working without a contract for months as there has been no time to draw one up. However, this service is considered absolutely essential for the protection and comfort of local people. The firm also have treatment to tackle the tiger mosquito and are planning to introduce more bats that feed off the mosquitos. Suzanne O’Connell

BITE SIZE Ibuprofen 600 and NEWS: 1g paracetamol now On 28th May a body was found floating in the water in the Cala del Palangre which is a cove between Los Locos beach and Punta Margallo. A member of the public called 112 at about 7.30pm after the woman entered the water fully clothed and swam to a cordoned off area, later the witness lost sight of her. Shortly afterwards the woman was found floating face down a little further to the south in an area of rocky coast. The Guardia Civil and Local Police attempted to resuscitate her for more than 15 minutes until the arrival of the ambulance confirmed the death. It is believed that the homeless woman used the area as shelter.

Punto Violeta During the May fair from the 29th May to the 3rd June, a ‘Punto Violeta’ was established between 8pm and 11pm. The purpose of having this meeting point was to raise awareness of the issue of domestic violence and support victims of aggression. It was also planned to coincide with a festival event which can be a time when aggression against women can be more prevalent. The ‘Punto Violeta’ was attended by professional staff and it was hoped that its presence might encourage respect for women and enable them to be harassment free. ‘Festivals and leisure events are a time when women can suffer more violence than usual,’ explained councillor for Continued on page 5

on prescription only Ibuprofen in 600mg capsules and paracetamol in one-gram pills are now only available on prescription, and pharmacies can be fined for selling them over the counter. In practice, they have not been authorised for over-the-counter sales since 2015, when the Law of Guarantees and Reasonable Use of Medications was passed, but it has rarely been enforced. This leniency started to change in February when the Spanish Medications Verification System (SEVEM) came into effect, meaning every single box of medicines carried its own individual code allowing it to be tracked, plus a seal on the lid preventing them from being opened before sale. But as yet, no real controls have been stringent enough to prevent pharmacies from selling Ibuprofen and paracetamol in these quantities. Now, though, the ministry of health has announced impromptu inspections on random pharmacies and, if any are caught failing to stick to the prescription requirement, they could be fined between €30,000 and €90,000, depending upon the severity of the offence. As nearly all high-street pharmacies are independently-owned and

typically family-run businesses which order in drugs and claim the prescription cost back from the State via their regional College of Pharmacists, a fine of this amount could literally lead to them going out of business overnight. To this end, it is expected local chemists will become far more stringent on sales of these medications, and customers are urged to be understanding and not pressurise their pharmacist. Paracetamol can still be bought over the counter in 500mg or even 650mg pills, and Ibuprofen in 400mg capsules, so the end result may just mean a few more euros for the buyer who would have to double up or take an extra 50 percent rather than swallowing just one pill. Otherwise, GPs will rarely hesitate to give a prescription for those who need to take them regularly.

Continued from page 1 money goes directly to the AECC. All those who registered to take part received an official Tshirt donated by Spain Property Shop and a bottle of water courtesy of Evolution Bar, both based locally at La Fuente Centre. The walkers warmed up with a Zumba work out by Angie Nichols and set off abut 10.30am. First back in just 29 minutes was Bernard Mercer, but most enjoyed the stroll around the coast. The walk is supported by the Orihuela Costa Town Hall and the Local Police who will safely guide the walkers around the circuitous route. After the walk there was a family fun day with live music through the afternoon performed by some of the top entertainers on the Costa Blanca, an on-site bar, hog roast and burger bar. The entertainment was hosted by Stevie Spit and Sunshine FM was on hand to

make sure there were continuous top tunes around the live entertainment. Local performers giving their time for free to entertain the crowds included: Al Joel, B Rumble, No Limits, ABBA Elite Girls, Morris Dancers, Jacuzzi, Keily Page, Johnny Lea, Diane Diaz, Rees, Cindy Fitzpatrick and Nigel Burchill’s Elvis Tribute. There was

also a special surprise as ‘The Blues Brothers’ arrived in an American Police car and

performed a set from their show. The money raised will go directly to the AECC to help fund it subsidised Early Detection Programme and research projects. The Early Detection Programme provides subsidised private screening for male and female cancers including: bowel, skin, breast, cervical, ovarian and prostate. Since being formed Maria and the Pink Ladies have raised nearly 400,000 euros for the AECC.

social welfare, Fabiana Ibarra. ‘We wanted to raise awareness amongst the population in general and those attending in particular. It is a serious problem that exists in our society; violence against women just because of who they are. We also want to challenge those attitudes that are also violent by nature such as harassment or humiliation.’

Worker injured after falling A 64 year old workers was injured on Wednesday 29th May following a fall whilst he was working on scaffolding three metres high in Torrevieja. The accident happened at around 10.15 am for unknown reasons and the man lost consciousness after falling. An ambulance took him to Torrevieja hospital where he continued to be in a serious condition and without the use of his legs. The accident is now being investigated to determine the causes.

Project zero ‘Proyectos Zero’ came to its conclusion on Thursday May 30th. The project has involved 120 students who aretaking an architecture degree at the University of Alicante. They have been exploring the future for Torrevieja through different workshops and through getting to know the town themselves. The project has required the students to redefine Torrevieja and the results have been on display in the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre. Those participating are first year students who have enjoyed the opportunity and have been able to offer optimistic and positive suggestions whilst also being critical.

Data protection advice for charities The councillor for charities, Carmen Morate, has announced that on Thursday 6th June there will be a talk about data protection aimed at charities in the town. The meeting will take place in the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre from 10am until 12pm. Continued on page 8

As the council chambers in Torrevieja town hall are about to change over from the four-party coalition to the PP, there is some dispute about projects in motion. Throughout the outgoing party’s time in office they have tried to put together a plan for the refuse collection service. Now with their days numbered, some of them still hoped that they could fulfil their ambition to establish a more environmentally friendly contract. The May council meeting went ahead as planned inspite of the recent local election which saw the current opposition party, the PP, re-elected. There were two points on the agenda. The first, the town cleaning contract and the second the removal of ‘adopted son of the city’ from Federico Trillo. On the first count, there was disagreement about whether it was acceptable to continue to vote through a project during this time of transition. Pablo Samper for Sueña Torrevieja and the PP were all in agreement that the cleaning contract should be put on hold and passed through by the incoming councillors. The handover will take place on June 15th. However, councillor Fanny Serrano and José Hurtado of the Greens argued that there was no reason why decisions couldn’t continue to be made during this interim time and that normal business continue. The contract is now advanced in its progression through the different stages of council business and, argued Councillor Serrano, it was only a matter of finalising some technical issues. The contract would then be up for public scrutiny. The second matter for discussion was whether Federico Trillo should continue to be an ‘adopted son’ of the town. He had been awarded the accolade by the previous PP mayor, Pedro Hernández, who has since served time in jail. Doubts about the suitability of the award have

been raised due to his links with corruption cases, a military aviation accident (Yak-42) and the fact that he hasn’t even bothered to collect the golden shield that he was awarded. Federico Trillo was defence minister when the Yak-42 plane crashed carrying

62 Spanish soldiers and 12 Ukrainian flight crew. It was claimed at the time that the plane they were using was in poor condition but Federico Trillo insisted that it was safe. There was also mix up over the return of the bodies with incorrect identification. However, even this decision has hung in the balance. Two people abstained from the vote to allow a vote or not: Pilar Gómez of Ciudadanos and Domingo Soler who had worked in the department of defence for Trillo. This vote was just passed but when the actual vote took place, Councillor Gómez changed her mind and voted to leave the decision to the incoming PP when they take office. A decision that means it is unlikely to be passed. The minority status of the last government has been a great disadvantage to them throughout their time in office. They have been unable to move forward in many areas due to the very slim balance of power. It was unlikely that in these last weeks of governing anything was going to change. Suzanne O’Connell

Dining and dancing Sevillanas style It might be over for another year, but those participating in the Sevillanas fair over the weekend will have plenty to remember it by. La Feria de Sevillanas is a rich and vibrant celebration of the sevillanas tradition. It takes place every year in Torrevieja, usually around this time or a little earlier in May. The feria is characterised by flamenco and parades of elaborately decorated horses and riders. Different marquees provide food and entertainment over the course of the weekend and a number of different dance schools perform on the stage. This Andalucian style event attracts thousands of visitors every spring and is declared of Provincial Tourist Interest. The fair has been taking place now for thirty years and has had its ups and downs, including having to take place one year in October due to contracting difficulties. Again, this year it did have to be postponed by a couple of weeks pushing what is traditionally known as the May fair into June. The fair opened on Wednesday May 29th and activities were planned during the week too. However, it is the weekend when the crowds really turn out to enjoy the occasion. Saturday is always a focus for the fair with a mass taking place in the morning at the main church in the town followed by the parade of

horses and carts. On Saturday June 1st there was a performance by Manu Tenorio and the dance schools Soul Dance and Paya’s. Both dance schools took the opportunity to show off what their students could do. The music that accompanies the flamenco isn’t always the easiest to understand or enjoy. However, if you were there on Saturday night you might have recognised a Spanish version of ‘I will survive’ and seen two of the younger groups dancing to it. There was a good audience for all the shows. However, the system of sitting in the seated area is difficult to understand and there seemed to be a lot of confusion. In the end, those wanting to sit down whilst they watched had the last say with many pushing past security at the entrance to take their seats regardless. On Sunday the horses were once more out on parade and two dance groups performed; Embrujo de la Casa de Andalucia and Dharma. The fair concluded on the evening of Sunday 2nd June with a performance by Raya Real. 2019 has seen a successful fair, albeit a little late, with some spectacular performances and a great atmosphere. BITE SIZE Help with clothes recycling NEWS: Continued from page 5 The talk explains the details of data management but charities will also then have the option of receiving free advice and support over the course of a year. This offer can only be made to 15 charities and those that are interested should go to the PROP office to register. If they had to pay for this service it would cost them €2,904.

Rock and Roll business The University of Alicante is collaborating with Torrevieja town hall to present the summer course ‘Rock and Roll Business: the business of contemporary music’ that will take place from 22nd to 26th July in the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre. The course offers the opportunity for people to find out more about the financial side to making music. It focuses on key aspects such as innovation, production, marketing and finance. The course is suitable for business people, accountants and professionals involved generally in the music business. It might also be of interest to students with different qualifications such as degrees in law and journalism, thosewhose goal is to start professionally in the music business and fans of rock or pop. Examples of successful practice include Kiss and The Rolling Stones who formed successful companies from which other businesses can learn. What is key here is how to turn customers into fans.

The religious charity, Caritas, has installed seven recycling bins for clothing in Torrevieja. Their interest in the clothes recycling project is in order to enable the handing on of clothes in a dignified way to those people who need them. The new recycling containers can be found at the entrances to different churches including Inmaculada

Five months without Henry On Saturday 1st June at 6pm a new rally at the door of the Orihuela Costa Town Hall was held to highlight the disappearance of Henry Alejandro Jiménez Marín , who disappeared on 1st January from La Florida urbanisation. The rally was organised by friends and family to shown that Henry is not forgotten.

Concepción, Parroquia de San Pedro y San Pablo, Parroquia de San Roque y Santa Ana as well as inside the Colegio y Residencia de las Hermanas Carmelitas MisionerasTeresianas and outside Carrefour. This is part of a larger project that the group are involved with across Spain. Altogether 29 diocesan are involved in ‘Moda Re’ and three recycling plants have been built which will be sustained by 3,800 collection points and 80 donation points. In the Diocese of Orihuela – Alicante, which is where Torrevieja is located, the RETEXTIL programme hires people who are unemployed and provides them with opportunities to get back into the labour market. The programme is designed to give an ethical response to textile management making sure that all the garments that are handed over are used efficiently and that none go to landfill or incinerators. There are also attempts to ensure that the distribution of the clothes is more equitable and that those asking for them can do so in a dignified way. There will be different points of sale where people can go and select the clothing but can take them away without having to pay for them. Suzanne O’Connell Since his disappearance, the family of this young man has been battling to keep Henry and his plight forefront of mind for the police, Town Hall and the general local community. They continue to hold rallies and searches to find him, at the same time they fight so that the case is not forgotten by the media. On Friday afternoon, a Mass was celebrated in the Parish of Pilar de la Horadada and on Sunday afternoon at 6:00 pm, there was another walk around in the area of Playas de Orihuela to raise awareness of Henry and his disappearance.

Electricity bills down and cheaper than last year Electricity bills went down by 5 percent this month, making them a total of 8.7 percent cheaper than a year ago and saving the average household €5.17. According to the National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC), which regulates price-setting of public and private sector utilities and essential services, the typical household is on a 4.4 kilowatt (kW) supply with an annual consumption of 3,000kW per hour, or 250kWh per month, meaning May's electricity bill would be €53.74, a saving of €2.82 on that of April and of €5.17 on that of May 2018. The wholesale energy market has also seen a reduction, with the average daily price for May being €48.40 per megawatt per hour (MWh), being 13.5 percent lower than in May last year and 4.2

percent cheaper than in April this year. Price forecasts for the year 2020 show a guideline price of €56.08 per MWh. Overall, the average wholesale price of electricity in 2019 has been €54.60 per MWh, or 5 percent lower than in 2018, when costs began to soar. After a series of consecutive increases, by September 2018, the wholesale price of electricity peaked at €71.27 per MWh, or 40 percent higher than the average for the previous three years. Electricity bills for consumers – households or organisations – are split 65 percent in taxes and charges and 35 percent in consumption, meaning relatively little incentive for customers to save on energy use.

A not-so-secret vote Complaints have been lodged that the vote in Torrevieja’s local elections on May 26th 2019 was not valid because the voting papers were left in a visible position on tables. This means that people picking up their chosen ‘list’ of candidates would do so in full view of those in attendance around the voting tables and other local people. The issue was brought to the attention of the body responsible for the fair application of the election in Orihuela. Altogether there were eight options for local councillors and more than 20 for the European elections. The lists of candidates for each party would normally be located in separate booths from where people could pick up their chosen list without it being obvious who

they were voting for. The reason that the selection of lists wasn’t under cover, it was claimed, was due to lack of booths large enough to house all the different slips. Altogether 15 complaints were received about the location of the ballot papers. An alternative to the larger booths for the papers would have been the use of screens to block the view of other people. However, these were not in place in Torrevieja. An official complaint has been made to the courts by the IU party. It is unlikely to be upheld but the complaint could then be taken further and lead to a delay in government handover. Will the new bus service go ahead? The plans for a new bus service in Torrevieja are ready to go ahead but the townspeople must wait for the decision of the PP party as to whether this will happen or not. The acting mayor of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón, explained that a contract has been prepared and the new service could begin in a year and a half pending the decision of the new government. The contract would need an

investment of 26 million euros and this would provide 37 new buses which would be electric in order to fulfil sustainability requirements. Councillor Manzanares, who has been closely involved in the drawing up of the contract, pointed out that when the coalition government took over the reins in 2015 there was no contract for the service and many people felt that Torrevieja’s bus service had many

deficiencies. Whether the new contract will go ahead or not is unclear. A similar contract which sought to make significant changes to the refuse collection service was voted against by the PP when in opposition. However, with their new majority, the PP will have the only say on whether the new contract goes ahead or not. Suzanne O’Connell

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP Despite being a short week due to the bank holiday, there was a lot for the pound to take in. Theresa May resigned as Prime Minister and several prominent Brexiteers emerged as front-runners for the top job. The results of the European elections were also announced, showing significant losses for the two major political parties and gains for both the Brexit Party and staunchly Remain parties such as the Liberal Democrats, the Green Party and the SNP. Despite all the turmoil, the pound held relatively steady as much of the uncertainty had already been priced in before the weekend began. Investors appear to be wary of a Brexiteer in Downing Street, but appear to be patiently waiting for a clearer indication of the outcome and the pound held steady. It’s likely that the development of the leadership campaign may have some impact in the coming weeks as a clearer picture emerges. Meanwhile, there was little in the data to give sterling any assistance; UK retail sales were flat on the month for April, but this was better than expected. However, the CBI's Distributive Trades Survey for May was significantly below forecast at -27%. It’s likely that the market will be watching the Conservative leadership race closely in the coming

weeks as an indication of the direction on Brexit.

EUR The EU elections have altered the political balance in Europe. No longer is the centre-right/centre-left coalition in charge of affairs: the small parties have grown and the big parties have become smaller. This will complicate at least two appointments that are key to the EU economy.Jean-Claude Juncker's position as president of the European Commission and Mario Draghi's as the head of the European Central Bank must both be filled. Whoever takes the top jobs has a lot to contend with. Beyond the issue of Brexit, ecostats this week showed that German business confidence softened and provisional PMIs pan-Euroland all missed the mark. Euro zone manufacturing was particularly weak at 47.7 but the 51.6 composite Euroland figure was a little more positive. In Germany and Sweden consumer confidence faded slightly, but across Europe the EC measure improved from -7.3 to -6.5. The euro has not yet seen major fluctuations due to uncertainties elsewhere, but it’s clear that the picture in Europe may make the euro vulnerable in the future unless there is an improvement in growth and a clearer picture regarding future leadership.

Torrevieja town hall commended

Neighbourhood watch kept informed

The WWF España has recognised the efforts of Torrevieja town hall in la Hora del Planeta 2019 (Earth Hour). This took place on Saturday 30th March and Torevieja was active in the campaign, raising awareness of the importance of looking after our planet and the risks that there are from unsustainable energy sources and energy waste. To raise awareness during the campaign the town hall buildings, Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre and the Inmaculada church, turned off their lights from 8.30pm until 9.30pm as a a symbolic gesture. La Hora del Planeta is a WWF campaign that started

On May 27th the La Siesta/ San Luis neighbourhood watch organisation got together at their usual venue of Casa Ventura to hear about some important services in Torrevieja. The group, which is composed of local multi-national residents, were addressed by the Red Cross and the Samaritans. The new deputy president, Dave Longworth reported on the Citizens Participation Group meeting at the

in 2007 in Sydney, Australia. The campaign focuses on the need to save energy in the home and take up some simple practices that can help contribute to the fight against climate change. There are more than 188 countries, thousands of towns and cities and millions of people who have taken part across the world. Torrevieja has been awarded a diploma by the WWF in recognition of their participation. Councillor José Manuel Dolón now urges the people of Torrevieja to maintain their respect for the planet and avoid excessive use of energy and resources. Suzanne O’Connell

health authority and provided more information about the newly developed telephone translation service that is being introduced. Following this successful meeting there will be more information next month about other support that is available. This includes the Help At Home team and the new Foreigners’ Office team. Looking a little further ahead, Consular representatives from Alicante will be attending the meeting on September 23rd to provide information about Brexit and finally, what British nationals living in Spain can expect. Accident on the CV-90 A woman is in hospital following an accident as she came off the roundabout leading into Montesinos on the CV-90. The vehicle she was travelling in then caught fire 40 metres off the road. The accident is being classed as rather unusual and is still being investigated. The woman was seriously injured in the crash which took place in the early hours of the morning on 27th May. The Guardia Civil is now investigating what appears to be an unusual sequence of events. The car had come off the road as it was travelling towards Rojales at the roundabout. It then travelled for 40 metres before catching fire. The driver was helped to escape from the car by a witness as it was beginning to burn. It was not easy to locate the driver as the car was far from the road

and in the middle of bushes. The track taken by the car from the road was not discernable and adds to the mystery of this accident. Local police from Torrevieja, the Guardia Civil, ambulance and firefighters attended the incident and the woman was taken to Torrevieja hospital. The woman was found to have a broken leg, injuries to the chest and abdomen and numerous bruises. She is still said to be in a serious condition. The car was left burnt out in this salt marsh area just inside the natural park of La Mata and Torrevieja. This is the second time in recent months that an accident has occurred here. Another vehicle left the road and came to rest next to the roundabout. The remains of this accident can still be seen. Suzanne O’Connell

Date rape drugs intercepted A 62 year old Irish man and a 47 year old British man from Torrevieja have been arrested in connection with a stash of date rape pills found in luggage at Elche-Alicante airport. The Guardia Civil detained the two people following a find of 14,600 pills altogether on two separate occasions. The drug has the effect of sedating those taking it and is the type used in enabling intercourse without permission. The drugs were found in two batchesand arrests were subsequently made, one in April and the second in May. The first batch of the drugs was discovered in January when the pills were intercepted in the airport on their way to Ireland. They were part of a shipment by air and were discovered in the airport warehouses before being loaded onto the plane.

Following this, an investigation began andthe 62 year oldIrish man, who had sent the package, was arrested in April. The second batch was found as a 47 year old British man attempted to take the drugs over to England on 22nd May. He was carrying a total of 9,150 pills of the same substance as the Irish man earlier in the year. The two men do not appear to be connected. However, the investigation is still open. The drug is only available on prescription and has a sedative effect. Because of this they are used for sexual purposes. Taking this drug without proper supervision is potentially very dangerous. Both men have now been charged and brought before the court. They have been released on bail pending a trial. Suzanne O’Connell

Seagate Wealth Management

Still using your UK financial adviser? M

any people who have retired to Spain and have investments still use their old UK‐based financial adviser. This could be for a variety of reasons, from feeling comfortable with the person they have been dealing with for many years, to not knowing any local Spanish‐based financial advisers. One of the main problems of continuing with your old adviser is they may not be authorised to give advice here in Spain. They almost certainly will not have the in‐depth knowledge of the tax‐ efficient products available to Spanish tax residents. Apart from the understanding of the Spanish system, having a local adviser means you can pop in to their office for a chat and be kept up to date with all the various changes that take place. This is especially relevant at the moment with the uncertainty surrounding Brexit. There are many advisers in Spain, but it is vitally important to ensure that the adviser you choose is UK qualified and properly authorised and regulated. Seagate Wealth advisers all used to work for Lloyds Bank and have a deep understanding of what British people want and expect from their financial adviser. Having worked in the service industry, they are fully‐ versed in customer care and regulation. By being a completely independent company, Seagate Wealth has access to a vast range of flexible, cost effective products from some of the worlds’ leading providers, including Prudential International. Here at Seagate Wealth, we can help with savings and investment advice, tracing lost pensions as well as managing existing pensions. If you are thinking about finding a new Spanish‐based financial adviser, then give us a call and see what we can do for you to ensure you live life the way you want.

Summer spruce up If your home is due for a design update, but you have a limited budget and even less time, you're in the right place. These ideas are all simple but will leave your space feeling fresh, ontrend, and refined. You can tackle each of these decorating ideas in one day, even though the results will look like it took way longer to pull off. Spruce Up Your Entryway If you don't have a grand hallway, then introduce a small console table. For a formal yet modern aesthetic, opt for a traditional table and then hang modern abstract art above it. Swap out your Throw Pillows Throw pillows are the easiest way to freshen up in the bedroom or living room. Introducing a new colour, print, or shape with a cushion can make the whole space feel new again. Install a Canopy If you want to transform your bedroom into a palace fit for royalty, add a canopy. A white gauze fabric will hang beautifully and bring an ethereal look to the bedroom. Reupholster your Furniture Reupholstering your furniture will automatically freshen up an entire space. Try making juxtapositions in the room work so well—the angular mirror, vivid orange photography, marble fireplace, rustic stool, and geometric pottery can all be unexpectedly complemented by the softness of the pastel chairs. Colour-block Your Wall For a graphic statement, colour-block your wall. Paint half of it a bold colour or opt for two neutral tones. Such as, black creeping

up about a quarter of the way while the rest is a nice shade of steel gray, creating an understated-yet-unique statement. Apply accent Wallpaper You don't have to wallpaper your entire room—just pick a wall and accent with it. It's fast, easy, and makes a big difference. Opt for Statement Art Make a simple wall a little more exciting with oversized artwork. Choose largescale photography or something abstract and vibrant to really make a statement. Install New Lighting If there's anything that can singlehandedly polish off a room, it's a light fixture. Case in point, a brass pendant light. It feels much more refined and sophisticated than a table lamp would and

will contrast with more traditional elements throughout any room. Put a Bold Floor Lamp In The Corner Choose a floor-to-ceiling lamp is an architectural stunner that really brings in that added wow factor. Look for a floor

lamp that doubles as artwork for a similar vibe. Stand behind a statement piece such as a leather armchair or an ultra modern corned suit. Create a Reading Nook No formal reading nook? No problem. Add a bench with a pillow in front of your bookcase and call it a day. Or if you have a recess window add a bench seat or low storage, add padding or cushions and you have an instant window reading seat. Add a Bench At The End Of Your Bed You don’t need a footboard. A bench will get the same job done. It’ll help anchor your bed, act as a spot to sit and put shoes on, and serve as storage for extra pillows and blankets. Paint Your Floors Think how simple your bathroom looks now add in a bright blue floor? The quick change allows the tub to take centre stage and somewhere you’ll want to soak in all day long.

Welcome to Gambia airport and the city. You can see a lot of interesting places such as The Gambia National Museum, The African Heritage Museum or African Heritage Centre.

THINGS TO SEE AND DO:

The Gambia is a country in West Africa and is the smallest country on the continent of Africa. It has a short North Atlantic Ocean coastline in the west and is surrounded by Senegal so that it is almost an enclave. The country occupies the navigable length of the Gambia River valley and surrounding hills.

BANJUL:

The second largest city and capital of Gambia is Banjul. The city is on an island, which has constrained its size population is only 40,000. Consequently much of the population now is based on the mainland between the

James Island. An excursion inspired by Alex Haley's bestseller and movie Roots. You can go there on cruise up the centre of the wide Gambia river, towards the former French trading post of Albreda and the village of Juffureh. Views of the river bank are distant. Visit the setting of Roots, an old slave trade station. Kachikally Crocodile Pool. very popular, many crocodiles (West African Nile Crocs), opportunity to touch/pat West African Nile Crocodiles. Sanyang Beach. One of the most beautiful beaches in Gambia. Rainbow Beach Bar is a great place to spend the day.

EAT AND DRINK

Being on the Atlantic ocean,

Banjul has some excellent and well priced seafood on offer. The locally produced peanuts are also very good and go well with a pint of Julbrew (made by Banjul Breweries, who also make soft drinks.) Also, you can find more interesting food in Gambia, such as Benachin or Jollof rice, a traditional West African rice dish with onions, spices, tomatoes or tomato paste mixed with meat, fish or vegetables. Chicken Yassa, that is chicken boiled with onion, black pepper and lime or lemon. Domoda, meat stew with rice and peanut butter sauce Gambia is truly international and the fish is to die for. You can try Palm Wine, juice from palmtrees that is collected and fermented. It is used as a kind of wine by the locals, and you may get a chance to try it if you go on a tour to rural Gambia or Spirits, you can most of the well known spirits and liqueurs in the tourist areas along the coastal strip.

Not allowed to see the kids Since our son's divorce we have not been able to see our grandchildren. Our ex-daughter in law is making life as difficult as she can for our son as well. We used to have the children after school, and they would also stay with us sometimes at weekends and school holidays, which was lovely for us - we are all very close and practically brought them up. We knew our daughter-in-law was likely to prevent us from seeing the children once they separated. What can we do? We've written to her, and telephoned to speak to the kids but she ignores us. Our lives are so empty now.

It's sad when grandparents have few rights when it comes to seeing their grandchildren after a marriage breakdown. If your son is having difficulties with access he should see his Solicitor. In normal circumstances a wife cannot prevent the father from seeing the children. Once access has been sorted out, you may have to be content with seeing your grandchildren when your son comes to visit.of money.

Can't stand the in-laws' interference My wife's parents suggested we move in to their second property, an apartment in a nearby village, rent free. To begin with this was great, but her mum and dad now feel they can call the shots about how we decorate the place etc. I am not sure it will work out. I want us to own our own property one day.

A gift of an apartment rent free certainly sounds like a nice gesture, but I don't suppose you want this situation to continue forever otherwise you are going to feel beholden to your wife's parents. You could bide your time for a couple of years to allow you to save for your own place. In the meantime talk to your in-laws to discuss what they would be open to, decoration-wise. A compromise is better than letting resentment build up, and I suppose it is their place after all. Lastly, have you thought about asking them if they would be open to you buying their apartment one day?

Juan Carlos I to retire K ing Juan Carlos I retired from public duty on Sunday (2nd June), exactly five years to the day since he abdicated in favour of his son, King Felipe VI. The Rex Emeritus has been considering giving up his Royal engagements since last year when he turned 80, according to a formal letter he sent to his son in the latter's capacity of head of State. This idea 'was reaffirmed in light of the unforgettable commemoration of the 40thanniversary of the Spanish Constitution', HRH Juan Carlos I reveals. King Juan Carlos' final official act was the presentation of the Spanish Order Awards 2019 in the San Lorenzo de El Escorial Royal Monastery on 17th May, when he handed the prestigious prize to historian Miguel Ángel Ladero. His last Royal trip was to Chile in March 2018, accompanied by his wife, Queen Sofía, who is the mother of the reigning monarch and from whom King Juan Carlos I has lived separately for many years. HRH Juan Carlos I was a key figure in bringing the Spanish Constitution of December 1978 into effect, spelling once and for all the end of dictatorship and the dawn of democracy, sealing the Transition process that began with the death of General Franco in November 1975. The 40th anniversary of its signing left King Juan Carlos I 'full of emotion', since it 'evoked, with pride and admiration, the memory of so many people who contributed to make the Transition possible'. “This event [in December] allowed me to renew my feelings of permanent gratitude to the people of Spain,” the former monarch wrote. Since his abdication in 2014, King Juan Carlos I has carried out his official activities 'with the same determination to serve Spain and the Crown' which 'inspired' his reign, but 'the time has come' to 'turn the page' in his life, he explains.

He has taken this decision through 'a father's great love and pride', and signs off the letter by pledging his 'eternal loyalty' to his son and with 'a great big hug'. HRH Juan Carlos will retain his Royal title and his status as official member of the Royal family, meaning he will still be referred to as 'King' and enjoy the same legal status as he has since his abdication. This includes a form of 'diplomatic immunity' which, in practice, merely means that any legal dispute or criminal action against him goes straight to the Supreme Court, the highest audience in the land, leapfrogging lower courts, in the same way as with government members and MPs. The retired King's last appearance in public – although not as part of official duties – was on Wednesday 22nd May at the Las Ventas bullring in Madrid during the fair in honour of San Isidro, watching a bullfight alongside his elder daughter, the Infanta Elena. Queen Sofía will continue with her own Royal engagements, including work on behalf of the numerous charities she patronises and King Juan Carlos I is likely to carry on with ad hoc private activities, such as supporting charities he is involved with.

SELLING? DON’T ASSUME A BUYER WILL HAVE VISION

Rebecca Serwotka

Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward – 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today! Featured on Best Buy Spain – Property TV – Sky Channel 189.

Creating a space in which buyers can see themselves in, is one of the fundamentals of selling a home. The typical real estate agent might tell you that the buyer will have imagination and will be able to change the paint colour on the walls, in order to fit their own needs. Have a purple kitchen? No problem! The buyer will have vision! Have strange, outdated furniture or a hobby collecting ceramic statues? That’s ok! The buyer will overlook it! Run as fast as you can from any agent who gives you that kind of advice, because it simply is not true. Some buyers are accustomed to managing home makeovers or even building a house or redecorating—the vast majority are not! Buyers must be able to see themselves living in your home when they walk through it. Are there too many family photographs on the counters or walls? Do you have a specific hobby, a fascination with a certain culture, or a distinct type of art gracing every room of your home? Understanding a buyer’s mentality is key. Every individual is different, and every member within the family in search of a home, is different too. Make the inside of the home as crisp and clean as possible. If the walls are any colour except the palette of neutrals found in current new construction homes, buyers may not be able to envision themselves in that space. Create a blank page as much as possible.

Apple™ has a clean white store, clean white products, and lots of accessories in various colours that the consumer can add to their core white product. Think of your home like a blank canvas, and let the buyer be the creator and the artist of their own space. Despite the effort it may take, it’s crucial to apply a neat, neutral paint job to the rooms that need it. Paint is extremely affordable, and although a neutral colour is not what you may want to live with every

day (remember it’s not about you!), neutral walls always show better than designer colours from more than five years ago. A professional real estate agent knows this and is honest about the small details that can kill or ignite a deal. A big myth homeowners often have is that the buyer can simply overlook certain things that stand out, like crazy colours or collectibles. The truth is that these things distract buyers from appreciating your home, and most buyers will simply just move on to the next house. Present an inviting, peaceful, and calm space where prospective buyers can imagine themselves creating their own identity. Selling? Enjoy the journey! Ready to sell your home? Head to www.80thingsreport.com for a list of the 80 things not to neglect when selling your home! See our advert in the centre pages of this newspaper.

Oceans Outdoor Furniture Oceans Outdoor Furniture now have three stores within the Costa Calida region, these are currently located in Cartagena, San Javier and Torrevieja, with the recent opening of the fourth store in Denia on the 27th May 2019. All of the above stores have been opened within the past four years and are part of a much wider expansion programme. This programme of

expansion has recently been accelerated with an investment of €250,000 to open five more stores within the next 18 months. These are planned to be located within the Costa Calida region and will all stock the full Oceans range. In addition to the store opening programme

Oceans, who already develop all of their own products, are currently working on some great new designs for 2020 and 2021. Speaking to the Costa Blanca People, a spokesperson for Oceans Outdoor Furniture, said, “Here on the sun drenched Costa Calida and Costa Blanca, outdoor living is such a big part of enjoying your time here that we invest considerably in not only bringing you a quality long lasting product but one that is also, comfortable,

affordable and designed to be styled to suit your property.” “Trends and styles change from season to season and that is why we are always designing new products and new styles of furniture. The products we are currently designing are quite radically different from current styles but are what we expect to be the trend in the years to come. Rattan furniture has been at the forefront of what we sell and have sold for many years

and whilst we believe this market will continue it will become less of the main stream product that we sell.” So whether you are looking for Rattan furniture, Aluminium furniture, Barbeques or occasional items for your terrace or garden then Oceans is surely the first stop. Call in and see one of the fully trained helpful staff who will be more than welcoming and will help you choose the perfect items for your property here in Spain.

Orihuela bid for UNESCO Creative City of Literature

The Councillor for Economic Promotion, Miguel Ángel Fernández, and the municipal technician Eduardo Rodríguez, travelled to Madrid recently to meet with the Secretary General of the National Commission of UNESCO, Belén Llera, along with a representative of the Ministry of Culture, to present and the application of Orihuela as a Creative City of Literature, which would be framed within the Network of UNESCO Creative Cities. “Orihuela puts in value the multicultural potential of the municipality with more than 122 nationalities, its distinguished natural and cultural heritage, its rich archives and printing tradition, its diverse community of creators, and the poet Miguel Hernández. All these elements are arguments for the upcoming candidacy this June,” said Fernandez. UNESCO has launched the call for new locations for its Creative Cities Network. The councillor has declared that Orihuela “is a source of opportunities for a new experiential creative tourism, for which the city bids through literature, innovation and creative industries.” The UNESCO Creative Cities Network was created in 2004 to promote cooperation with and between cities that identify creativity as a strategic factor for sustainable urban development. The 180 cities that currently form this Network work together towards a common goal: to position creativity and cultural industries at the centre of their local development plan and to actively cooperate internationally on the subject. By joining the Network, cities commit to sharing

their good practices and developing ties that link the public and private sectors and civil society to strengthen the creation, production, distribution and dissemination of cultural activities, goods and services. They aim to develop poles of creativity and innovation and increase the opportunities available to creators and professionals in the cultural sector and to improve access to and participation in cultural life, in particular for the benefit of disadvantaged groups and vulnerable people and fully integrate culture and creativity into their sustainable development plans. Spain has six cities on the Network Barcelona and Granada are Cities of Literature, Seville is the City of Music, Burgos and Denia, Cities of Gastronomy and Bilbao City of Design. International Summit of Literature and Festival of Poetry and Light Orihuela will take advantage of the celebration of the VII Forum of Cities and Creative Territories, which will take place in 2020 in the municipality for having won the 2019 Creative Spain Cup, to launch an annual Program focused on promoting this bid. Among the planned activities that will reinforce the bid is hosting the International Summit of Literature and a Festival of Poetry and Light planned to take place in the heart of the city, for the enhancement of all its rich heritage through Literature. There will also be a Cafés-Tertulia route, poetry recitals and dramatised routes through the old town. Creative Industries will be strengthened with the already planned first Exhibition of Creative Industries (MICCO) and specialised training will be promoted in the sector of entrepreneurship and creativity. All these activities aim to turn Orihuela into a true creative ecosystem that enhances its vitality and positions it as a 'Creative City of Literature by UNESCO', as a true cultural and creative tourist destination. GAVIN & STACEY TO RETURN FOR SPECIAL Gavin & Stacey is coming back! James Corden tweeted recently : “Ruth Jones and I have been keeping this secret for a while ... We’re excited to share it with you. See you on Christmas Day.” To prove he’s not being funny like, the Late Late Show star posted a cover of the script too. Ruth Jones and I have been keeping this secret for a while ... We’re excited to

share it with you. See you on Christmas Day @BBCOne #GavinandStacey pic.twitter. com/gTRa3cp90t - James Corden (@JKCorden) May 28, 2019 Gavin & Stacey followed the coming together of two quirky families – one from England and one from Wales – after a young couple fall in love. Mathew Horne and Joanna Pageplay played the

titular characters, while the writers – Cordon and Jones - starred as Gavin and Stacey’s friends, Smithy and Nessa. Other prominent cast members included Alison Steadman and Larry Lamb, who play Gavin’s parents, Pam and Mick, and Melanie Walters and Rob Brydon, who portrayed Stacey’s mother, Gwen, and her uncle, Bryn. It's been almost 10 years since we last

caught up with the Shipmans and the Wests, with the last episode airing on1st January, 2010. What will have happened to all over favourites in the decade since the last episode? Will Nessa have even more bizarre yet true stories? How many times will Pete and Dawn have broken up and got back together? Will Gwen have learned to make

something other than omelettes? Will we finally learn what happened on that fishing trip? Last year, Ruth said she reckons she knows what baby Neil would be like at the age of 11, while the actor who played Neil’s mum shared a photo of what he looks like now. Back in March, Pam actress Alison Steadman said that she doubted there would be a reunion special, so we’re hoping she has left some space in her calendar for filming this.

SUMMER SCHOOLS NOW OPEN FOR REGISTRATION

The Councillor for Education, Begoña Cuartero has opened the registration period for summer schools for this year 2019. “This service will be available in the city, districts and on the coast of Orihuela, and the registration period is already open from 24th May,” said the Councillor. The Councillor explained that the summer vacation period represents for many families in certain personal, professional or work circumstances, additional concerns and difficulties in relation to the adequate care of their children and how to occupy them without the school routine, “so that from this Department we intend to respond to this real need through a municipal resource such as the Summer School”. The Department offers around subsidised places for schoolchildren of the municipality aged between 3 and 12 years of age, for a program to be developed in the facilities of CEIP Miguel Hernández and CEIP Villar Palasí in Orihuela, as well as on the coast and in the districts, provided that a minimum of 12 children enrol. The program will begin at the end of June, and will run until the end of August, from 9am to 2pm each weekday.

This year the Miguel Hernández University will hand over its facilities in the campus of Desamparados, so that a small group of these Summer Schools can carry out their activities, after the good result of last year's pilot project. Councillor Cuartero was accompanied by Paloma Ferrer, representative of Oriverano, the company that manages the Summer Schools activities, who explained that from now families who wish can register their children for this service, which will be priced at 30 euros a fortnight, or 60 euros per month. This can be done through the website: www.oriverano.es, by emailing: info@oriverano.com or calling: 656 339 412. As for the program, Paloma Ferrer said: “We have three major drivers, one is the city of Orihuela, through which we intend to teach our children the cultural and educational capacity we have. In addition, we have around nine projects through which we aim to ensure that the children have fun and learn at the same time, as well as added perks such as visits and trips to the museums and libraries of Orihuela, all with directed activities and at no extra cost.” Finally, Begoña Cuartero wanted to emphasise that the main objective of this program “is the reconciliation of work and family life to offer leisure and free time alternatives, as well as having some educational content for all children in appropriate environments and spaces, such as the centres of infant and primary education across our municipality.” Mireille Toddington

THE RISE OF MEATLESS MEAT 2019 has been an incredible year for a niche industry: alternative meats. First, Impossible Foods, a leading creator of plant-based meat-like burgers, announced the Impossible Burger 2.0, an improved recipe over previous meat substitutes that tastes, well, a lot meatier. In April, Burger King announced the launch of the Impossible Whopper, Qdoba said it would make Impossible Meat bowls and tacos available at all of its US locations, and Del Taco announced it would offer Beyond Meat’s beef alternative. Meat alternatives are clearly having a moment and it’s offering us a glimpse into a different future for meat. The factory farm system has contributed to a range of problems, from increasing antibiotic resistance to the climate crisis. Proponents of meat alternatives say they could help change that equation. Meat alternatives aren’t new. There have been veggie burgers available in grocery stores for a long time. But the meatless meat products on the market today are different in one important way: An alternative meat, like a Beyond Meat burger or the Impossible Burger, is a product made from plants that is meant to taste like meat, be marketed to meat-eating customers, and replace some of those customers’ meat purchases. That’s what makes them different from veggie burgers, which have typically been aimed at vegetarians. There’s another kind of meat alternative on the horizon: so-called cell-based (or lab-grown, or cultured) meat products are made from real animal cells but are grown in a food production plant instead of taken from animals raised in captivity and slaughtered for consumption. These aren’t on the market yet - and some are sceptical that they’ll work out - but they are meat alternatives too, and they might be part of the big picture as we try to move away from relying on factory farming to supply the meat consumers want. Caroline Bushnell oversees retail research at the

Good Food Institute, a nonprofit that works to promote meat alternatives. “Veggie burgers have been around for many decades,” she said. “Plantbased meats are still just getting started. The next generation is really designed for meat eaters, so the stakes are higher for what the products need to deliver on. People really like the taste of meat. Instead of trying to convince them to eat a kale and quinoa bowl, why not try to make meat for them in a better way?” The teams behind meat alternatives work to ensure their products have the flavour, macronutrient balance, and cooking experience of meat. The Impossible Burger famously bleeds, thanks to a meat protein called heme, which the company produces from yeast. The leading companies that produce meatless meat products have actually gone out of their way to make sure their products won’t be tarred as just for vegetarians. Burger King’s Impossible Whopper, for example, comes slathered in mayo. Nigella to open cancer cookery school for patients

Celebrity chef Nigella Lawson will open the UK’s first cookery school for people living with cancer. From Tuesday 4 June, the non-profit organisation Life Kitchen will offer free cookery classes to those living with the disease in order to encourage a love of cooking and eating through “accessible and creative recipes”. The school, which will be based in Mowbray Park Sunderland, will host cooking classes for cancer sufferers who may suffer from a loss of taste as a result of undergoing cancer treatments. A side effect of chemotherapy drugs can include the changing of taste receptor cells in the mouth with some sufferers saying food can taste metallic. Food writer and stylist Ryan Riley founded Life Kitchen in 2018 in memory of his mother who passed away from small cell lung cancer in 2014. Like many cancer sufferers, Riley’s mother struggled with the loss of taste and appetite during chemotherapy treatment. “My mother couldn’t taste anything,” Riley said about his mother’s experience. “The only thing she enjoyed was ice pops.” Each cookery session will last around three hours and will be available to community members and those from further afield, as well as double up as an outreach space. During the lessons, Riley hopes to teach students the basics of cooking, seasoning, layering of flavour

and different tastes. The food stylist has worked alongside Professor Barry Smith from the University of London who specialises in senses to help create a menu that is suitable for cancer patients and their sensitive and changing tastebuds. “We’ve looked at umami rich foods and developed recipes like our lentils with mushrooms and gremolata,” Riley explains. “We’ve also worked on strong and balanced dishes such as Life Kitchen’s roasted rose harissa salmon with fennel yoghurt salad and our signature pineapple tacos dish.” Macmillan Cancer Support says that while those living with cancer may find that food tastes different during chemotherapy treatment, this is usual temporary. “You may no longer enjoy certain foods or find that all foods taste the same,” a statement on the subject on the cancer charity’s website reads. “Food may taste very sweet or salty, or you may have a metallic taste in your mouth.” To help deal with changing tastes during treatment, Cancer Research advises patients to choose foods that have strong flavours (garlic, lemon juice, herbs), use plastic utensils if food tastes metallic, and marinate ingredients overnight or for a few hours to add flavour. Since the launch of Life Kitchen, Riley has hosted several pop-up cooking masterclasses at locations across the UK. He has also received support from several celebrities including chefs Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and Jamie Oliver, as well as television presenters Stephen Fry and Sue Perkins (who is now a patron of the charity). In February, Fry urged his 12.7m Twitter followers to donate money to the fundraising project to launch the cookery school. Interior designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen has also designed an exclusive print for the school; an official pattern printed on Life Kitchen’s new tea towels, apron, and other kitchen items.

APAH fundraiser APAH hosted a successful 'Gladrags & Cava' night recently to raise much needed funds to help care for the abandoned and abuse animals it has rescued. Everyone who came along enjoyed the evening, and cheered on the ladies who had offered to model some of the clothes, which were available to buy. There was an amazing range of designer label clothes, all with the original price tags still in place, with outfits originally priced as high as 385 euros! In fact, the original price of many of the clothes was 100 euros plus. A shoe, handbag and hat set with an original eye watering price tag was bought by a lady with a wedding to go to, and organisers even managed to find her a dress which matched them perfectly. She went away

very happy at having sorted out her wedding outfit at a fraction of the original cost. Many of the ladies who attended asked on the night when the next one would be, so the event obviously proved a huge hit. So much so, that the charity will be holding another event later in the year and will make sure it is advertised well in advance. The figure everyone was waiting to hear is how much was raised on the night and that was a much-needed 510 euros. The charity wants to thank everyone who came along and ‘particularly the hard working ladies from the APAH shop, the lovely ladies in Bar Las Rosas, the wonderful 'models' and of course all the people who came to meet us and scoop up some fantastic bargains’.

Charity donation British Ambassador thanks Las Salinas Lodge donates two thousand euros to DEBRA charity (the butterfly children) At the recent Saltpot Luncheon, of local Lodge Las Salinas 79, Worshipful Master Norman Barrall and his wife Carol presented the Director of DEBRA with a cheque for two thousand euros, which enabled the charity to buy two, much needed, computers. The Director of DEBRA, Evanina Makow, expressed her deep gratitude for the award explaining how the computers would facilitate their activities considerably. DEBRA is an organisation devoted to providing support for families with children suffering from a rare and complex skin disease called Epidermolysis Bullosa, they are often called butterfly children because of the delicacy with which they must be cared for. They have a team consisting of a psychologist, four specialist nurses, and three social workers who travel, when needed, to anywhere in Spain to provide

support and training to the family and hospital staff. If you would like to help the charity they would be very grateful for any donation you might care to give, and this would help them to continue their excellent work. If you would like more information about Freemasonry, please contact the email address below. prensa@glpvalencia.com

Expat Volunteers The British Ambassador, Simon Manley, held an event at the Melia Hotel in Alicante on to say thank you to all the Volunteers from different expat groups here on the Costa Blanca who, in his words “Have helped enable him and the consulate staff here in Spain to do their jobs.” HELP President Christine Baillie and HELP Office Manager Joan Mitchell represented HELP Murcia Mar Menor at the event, and took the opportunity to mingle with the other charity workers whilst enjoying the drinks and canapes supplied on the hotel terrace. Simon Manley, who will be stepping down this summer, has represented the Queen here in Spain since 2013, was educated at Oxford and Yale before joining the British F.C.O., has a Spanish wife Maria Isabel and three daughters. Mr Manley said he had no idea what he would be doing next but was looking forward to a new challenge having enjoyed his life in Spain for the last five years.

HELP has been asked many times by the British Consulate to help both expats and visitors to the Mar Menor area who have required our assistance and, thankfully, the Charity has always been able to give the support and assistance

required and will continue to do so to the best of its ability. If you feel you could donate a few hours a week of your time to help HELP please contact the office on 968 570 059 or visit our outlet at the Oasis Centre in Los Alcazares.

Torrevieja Christian Fellowship is on the move Torrevieja Christian Fellowship (TCF) announced recently that it is on the move. The church has been located in Torrevieja for over 30 years but with rising rental costs the time came for TCF to buy its own building. Pastor Chris, along with the Church Officers, began the arduous task of searching for suitable venues – seeking one which was not only affordable, but could accommodate the church

members and its activities. Several months into the search, TCF were introduced to Natasha Holding from Leddy Homes, a family run estate agent in Los Montesinos. Pastor Chris said, “Once the building had been found, it was great working with Natasha from Leddy’s on the finer technicalities of the purchase. It was a wonderful feeling having all those who have helped and supported TCF in this purchase, at the

Notary Office on 17th April 2019 where we completed and received the keys”. The new TCF church is located at Calle Daya Nueva 12 in Los Montesinos and after some refurbishment will be open for services. The last service at the ‘old’ church (on Avenida de las Cortes Valencianas, Torrevieja) was held on May 19th. In the interim, services will be temporarily held at El Nacional Grill Restaurant, Punta Prima, while the new building is being

prepared. Pastor Chris said, “We as a Church have been on an amazing journey of miracle after miracle. Initial work necessary to convert the building into a Church, includes floor tiling, a suspended ceiling, lighting and electrics, fire safety and improved toilet facilities.”. Chris added “Our thanks to the congregation and friends of TCF in Spain and abroad and to Natasha at Leddy Homes, who have supported this venture

and worked so hard to make this possible”. Church Elder Roy Newton said, “We are all very excited at this purchase. Our new location in Los Montesinos means the new church will be accessible to English speaking people in a much wider area such as Quesada, Rojales, Benijofar, Algorfa, Los Montesinos, San Miguel, Orihuela Costa and farther afield, as well as Torrevieja.”

High cholesterol linked to Alzheimer's, study finds High cholesterol raises the risks of earlyonset Alzheimer's disease and may even cause the devastating brain disorder, new research suggests. A link between the more common lateonset form of Alzheimer's and high 'bad' cholesterol has been established by multiple studies, but the type of disease that sets in before age 65 is not as well understood. Now, researchers working with the Atlanta Veteran's Affairs hospital and Emory University have found that blood cholesterol may significantly raise risks for early-onset disease - whether or not you have the dreaded 'Alzheimer's gene.' The new study's findings suggest that a healthier diet might help stave off the onset of crippling memory loss. There are four genes that seem to raise risks for early-onset Alzheimer's disease. Collectively, these genes likely account for about 14 percent of the 200,000 cases of

early Alzheimer's in the US. Alzheimer's, typically strikes after age 65, but between five and 10 percent of sufferers develop memory loss beginning in their 40s or 50s. Some who inherit particularly high-risk genes for the disease may begin to lose their memories as early as in their 30s. Like older-onset Alzheimer's there's no way to make an unequivocal diagnosis of younger Alzheimer's disease until an autopsy can be conducted after death. Tests given to diagnose the disease remain relatively subjective, treatments are minimally effective and a cure does not exist. Scientists hope that by better understanding the disease's root causes and risks, they can get closer to developing treatments or perhaps preventing the disease altogether. But until gene therapies for Alzheimer's are fully developed, there is nothing to be

done about Alzheimer's risks written into someone's DNA. Instead, the Emory scientists looked at a more easily changed risk factor: cholesterol. Specifically, they focused on low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or 'bad' cholesterol. They assessed blood samples and DNA from 2,125 people, 654 of whom had been diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's. About 10 percent of the participants with early-onset Alzheimer's had a variation of the APOE gene that is closely associated with the disease. Another three percent had at least one of three other risk genes, according to the study, published in JAMA Neurology. But that meant that the vast majority of the group had unexplained early-onset Alzheimer's. A possible explanation lay in the tests for blood cholesterol levels. The men and women with high LDL were at an elevated risk of developing Alzheimer's at a young age, regardless of their genetic risks. 'The big question is whether there is a causal link between cholesterol levels in the blood and Alzheimer's disease risk,' said Dr Thomas Wingo, neurologist and lead study author. 'The existing data have been murky on this point. One interpretation of our current data is that LDL cholesterol does play a causal role. If that is the case, we might need to revise targets for LDC cholesterol to help reduce Alzheimer's risk.'

Eat fruit skins for health boost According to experts, it would seem that eating the skin of fruit and veg could help improve your mood, make you look younger and even kick cancer... Oranges Save your fingernails and eat the whole fruit, peel and all. According to a 2004 study in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry, powerful antioxidants called super flavonoids found in orange and tangerine peels can reduce levels of total cholesterol and “bad” LDL cholesterol, without lowering the “good” HDL levels. Antioxidants mop up damaging free radicals which are produced by our bodies when we breathe and eat and are linked to disease. Ones obtained from the peel were 20 times more powerful than those from the juice and the same goes for all citrus fruits. Although we throw away the peel because of the bitter taste, the pith contains high levels of pectin, a component of dietary fibre known for its jam-setting qualities, which helps lower cholesterol and acts like a pre-biotic, helping colonise the gut with beneficial bacteria. How to eat it: Add grated orange peel and zest to salads, cauliflower cheese or baked salmon. Apples Peeling the skin off an apple means throwing away the fibre. Almost half the vitamin C lies within 1mm of the skin’s surface so you’re losing that too. And most of the fragrance cells are in the skin, so you can have a tasteless fruit if you peel it. Red apple skins are particularly rich in anthocyanins, which are antioxidants that may protect against several types of cancer, in particular prostate cancer. Yellow apple skins contain carotenoids like betacarotene which help maintain healthy eyes, combat cancers and protect against heart disease. And green apple skins are rich in lutein,

which can help reduce the risk of cataracts and birth defects and also protect against cancers. The bright colour of apple skins is completely indicative of the healthy polyphenol content in it. The core and pips don’t contain higher levels of antioxidants but are an excellent source of soluble fibre to help stabilise blood sugar and aid digestion. How to eat it: Dip slices in heart-healthy peanut butter. The protein-carbohydrate mix forms a perfect post-workout snack. Garlic According to a 2003 report in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, garlic skin is recognised for having powerful antioxidant properties, and researchers from the Wakunaga Pharmaceutical company in Japan identified six antioxidant compounds within its skin. Peeling garlic removes phenylpropanoid antioxidants found in the velvety membrane which help fight the ageing process and protect the heart How to eat it: Slice a whole garlic head in half lengthways or even roast whole. Bananas The uses for banana skins extend beyond slapstick pranks. A Taiwanese research team from Chung Shan Medical University discovered that banana peel extract can ease depression because it’s rich in the mood-balancing hormone serotonin. It also protects your retinas because it contains lutein, an antioxidant from the carotenoid family, which protects eye cells from exposure to ultraviolet light, a cause of cataracts. In clinical tests, the research team exposed two groups of retina cells – one a control group and the other group soaked in a solution of banana peel extract – to strong light six hours a day for two days. At the end of the experiment the control group had died while the group

soaked in banana peel extract suffered no damage. There was no difference between using skins that had gone brown and those that were still yellow. How to eat it: The research team advises boiling the peel for 10 minutes and drinking the cooled water, or putting it through a fruit juicer and drinking the juice. In brown skins the bitter, starchy carbohydrates have turned to sugar, making it sweeter. You can also add other fruit juices to make it more palatable without losing any of the nutritional benefits. Potatoes You’ll double your intake of nutrients by eating the skin. Just one fist-sized potato skin provides half your RDA of soluble fibre, potassium, phosphorous, iron, zinc and vitamin C. Pound for pound, potatoes contain more vitamin C than oranges, so are perfect for anyone looking to ward off colds and boost their immune system. How to eat it: Roast unpeeled potato wedges in a drizzle of olive oil. Pineapple Along with fibre and vitamin C, pineapple’s real health benefits lie in the enzyme bromelain, which can break down many times its own weight of protein in a few minutes. This makes it excellent for people with indigestion as food is digested and absorbed quicker, reducing bloating. Bromelain is an anti-inflammatory too, so eat pineapple if you are suffering from hay fever, arthritis or gout. The middle core actually contains twice the bromelain concentration of the fruit – and canning destroys the bromelain content, so throwing away the core is a real no-no nutritionally. How to eat it: Press and crush the stem and add the juice to smoothies. It can be rather stringy, but that leftover pulp can again be added to soups or casseroles for extra fibre.

Tech Fact

Wikipedia needs an army of antivandal bots Wikipedia's mission is to make knowledge freely available to anyone with access to the Internet. However, anyone with internet can also sign up and edit pages – which results in what they call vandalism (someone purposefully altering facts with malice). There is a very robust moderation system but there's only so much that a person can do, in terms of actively monitoring changes and correcting

changes that vandals make. That's where the bots — essentially computer programs — come in. The bots (like ClueBot-NG) keep a track of all changes made to any page and instantly revert back to the 'correct' version if a vandal decides to change things. About 1,941 bots are authorised for use on the 38,818,162 Wikipedia pages at last count.

Winners of ‘Irish Tapas Route’ The second Irish Pub Crawl took place in Orihuela Costa on Easter Weekend in probably the worst weather that the coast experienced this year so far. Undaunted, 20 Irish pubs put their best foot forward and produced an excellent ‘Tapas Route’. Town hall councillor for tourism and foreign residents Sofia Alvarez provided two busses to get participants safely around the route. Participants were able to vote for their favourite Irish pub on a specially designed app called “Rutappa”. Paddy’s Point in La Zenia which is

celebrating its 20th anniversary this year won the food award with ‘Best Tapa in an Irish Pub’. The Irish pub with the best atmosphere was awarded to the Stray Sod in the very popular La Fuente centre. The Cabo Roig Strip, where eight different Irish pubs participated in the Irish Tapas Route, produced the winner of the ‘Best Decorated Irish Pub’, McCafferty’s. Most importantly the many customers who participate in the Irish Pub and Grub Crawl had a fantastic and fun time. They were able to have a tapa

and a drink for €2.50 in each Irish pub they visited. There were people from many different countries who attended, Irish, British, Spanish, Swedish and Norwegian were the main nationalities seen moving from Irish pub to Irish pub. The weather may have been bad but “the music and the craic were mighty”. The date for the third Irish Pub and Grub Crawl in 2020 has not yet been decided but it is likely to be held on Valentine’s weekend 15th and 16th February. Watch this space!

How to Lose your Licence A 34-year-old man from Galicia has had his driving licence withdrawn after losing 28 points in a single week. In the first incident the driver attempted to avoid and flee from an alcohol and drug checkpoint. A few days later he was intercepted by another patrol that subjected him to an alcohol and drugs test, in which he tested positive. Just a few hours later another patrol stopped the vehicle and performed a test, which was positive once again. As a result of the “habitual risk” that the driver presents, the Guardia Civil calculated a loss of 28 penalty points for several “very serious” infractions that also resulted in an accumulate fine of 4,200 euro . As a result of the severity of the incidents the outcome is that the driver also had his licence withdrawn, and it cannot be recovered by time. In order to be eligible to drive once again, not only will the driver have to wait for a period of time to pass, he will also have to undergo a driver awareness and training course, and then have to submit to a driving test once again, as if he had never been issued with a licence previously, as a new driver. Habitual and repeat offenders are classed as “high risk” when it comes to road safety and can therefore be subjected to special surveillance so that they do not endanger other drivers and, in extreme cases, their vehicle may be confiscated. If you´re wondering how easy it might be to lose points, the DGT has issued a list of some the top reasons, categorised by their severity.

LOSE SIX POINTS: Driving with a rate of alcohol greater than 0.50 mg per litre of exhaled air. If professional and novice drivers (qualified less than two years), the limit is reduced to 0.30 mg / l. Driving under the influence of drugs, psychotropics, stimulants and other substances with similar effects. Refusing to submit to a breathalyser test or drug screening. Driving in a reckless manner (endangering other drivers), driving in the opposite direction or engaging in unauthorised races. Exceeding the speed limit by more than 50% the maximum authorised limit and by at least 30 kilometres per hour. Using mechanisms or instruments that inhibit traffic monitoring or radar detection systems. Exceeding driving time by more than 50% or reducing rest times by more than 50% of those laid down in legislation on land transport. LOSE FOUR POINTS: Driving with a blood alcohol level between 0.25 and 0.50 mg per litre of exhaled air. For professional and novice drivers, the limit is between 0.15 and 0.30 mg / l. Throwing objects on or nearby the road that could cause fires, accidents or impede other road users. Driving on motorways or dual carriageways with vehicles that are expressly prohibited. Driving a vehicle with an occupation that increases by

50% or more the number of authorised seats. Driving a vehicle without a licence for that vehicle. Driving with a suspended licence or having been banned for driving that vehicle. Driving negligently and putting other road users at risk. Failure to comply with the legal provisions on the priorities and the obligation to stop at the stop sign and traffic lights. Failure to comply with the legal provisions on overtaking, endangering or hindering those moving in the opposite direction and overtaking in places or circumstances of reduced visibility. Overtaking, endangering or hindering cyclists. Perform a reversing manoeuvre on motorways. Increasing speed or performing manoeuvres that prevent or hinder overtaking by the driver of another vehicle. Failure to observe the signs and signals of agents that regulate movement. Failure to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. LOSE THREE POINTS: Making the change of direction in breach of the provisions in road safety laws. Driving using a mobile phone, programming the browser, using headphones or other devices that reduce the attention. Not using seat belts, child restraints, helmets and other protective equipment.

Tales from the Top Flight ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Dear reader, 21 seconds. 21 seconds is all it took for Liverpool to utterly expose the hapless Kieran Trippier’s total lack of regard for positional play and to win the somewhat dubious penalty that saw them take the lead against Spurs in Madrid. And for Spurs, that Champions League minute-and-a-half covering the climax in Amsterdam to the referee pointing to the spot was the epitome of crashing from a very great height. In tribute to the 2019 Champions League final, today’s column is going to be a slightly nervy, tired affair that will leave people thinking about all the class, brilliance and sheer drama of this season’s Champions League columns by me. It’s fair to say that the Champions League probably used up all its drama in the semi-finals as the clash in Madrid won’t be remembered as a classic.

So, hands up if you had Divock Origi as the last scorer in the Champions League this season? I mean, at the start of the season when you wonder how things might pan out. Not many of you, I am sure. The Belgian seems to have found himself a useful knack that his fellow countrymen number nines seem to have lost – scoring important goals on the biggest of stages. Are you watching, Romelu? That could have been you. And how dare Liverpool celebrate like that, with their 64% pass completion rate? And what about all those neutrals they left feeling disappointed by their performance on the night? Have some respect lads, will you? I jest of course before the complaints start flying in quicker than Moussa Sissoko had broken Tottenham hearts. Had Liverpool ended the season without any kind of silverware it would have been either very, very harsh on them or very, very funny. I am still not entirely sure which. The majority of the first half will be remembered for a determined, driven break through the midfield heading towards Hugo Lloris’ penalty area. The problem was, it was from the pitch invader – not Jordan Henderson. That said, Harry Winks stepped aside as if she was wearing a red shirt. The second half was a little more frenetic as Spurs seemed to realise that they did need to try and get some shots on goal if they were to turn things round – Alisson was by far the busier goalkeeper but did he have to make any kind of save that you wouldn’t expect him to make? No, probably not. But, people will now remember that he has made the most

saves by any goalkeeper in a Champions League final as if that, in itself, is an award. Yes, Spurs had more of the ball but they didn’t really land anything that looked like a killer blow to Liverpool’s belief that they were going to get to “talk about six, baby”. After the game, King Kloppo hailed the team talk given by none other than James Milner, suggesting that without it Liverpool may not have triumphed on the night. Jurgeylad also informed us that his big rival Peppy G had been on the phone to congratulate him already before they both declared that they’d set about “kicking each other’s butts again” next season. Mauricio Pochettino was understandably more downbeat saying that ‘now was the time for calm’ and that the inclusion of Harry Kane had nothing to do with the result. Poch said Kane had come off the pitch ‘fresh’. Well, that’s hardly surprising given he hardly touched the ball, no? The Kane situation put the Poch stuck between a rock and a hard place. It was a decision that was nothing more than an irritating distraction – it would have been easier on Spurs if Kane had still been injured for the match. Not because Kane doesn’t add something to Tottenham, of course, he does. But because the whole thing about having to even make a decision has multiple knock-on effects and just makes life more difficult than it needs to be. And, frankly, it wasn’t down to Kane that Spurs failed to really threaten. I’d be looking at Christian Eriksen this morning and seeing if Real Madrid might still be daft enough to make a bid. And as for Kieran Trippier? Gareth Southgate knows, that’s all that can be said. Dele Alli isn’t immune from criticism either, it wasn’t his best night.

Mind you, it’s not been his best season. ‘But what about his assist in Amsterdam?’ I hear some loyal Spurs folk shout from the back. My friend, that wasn’t an assist. That was a shocking touch that just happened to lead to the biggest goal Spurs scored this season. As for it being ‘harsh’ on Lucas Moura, regular Spurs fans in a moment of honesty will tell you that apart from a treble against Huddersfield and that hat-trick in Amsterdam he’s actually been pretty average since the New Year. ‘But he’s got momentum’ people still cry. There was a three-week gap between Moura’s anonymous last performance of the season against Everton and the final. So tell me again where that momentum is meant to be? People might think I am ignoring the fact that Liverpool have won their sixth ever European Cup/Champions League crown. I am not. But what can you really say about Liverpool’s performance? It did the job. And that’s all they needed to do. It was rather strange seeing them sit back and knock it long and straight for Salah and Mane to run on to but, after all, they did have that early goal advantage to sit back on. And, bless them, it was quite hot in Madrid. Sure, it was a little weird watching Jordan Henderson lift a trophy that is really only meant to be handed to the greatest players in European football but I soon changed my mind after I saw the footage of him celebrating with his Dad. If you haven’t seen it on social media yet, stop reading the rest of this rubbish and go and find it. It’s the most warming thing you’ll do today. On TV, watchers abroad were treated to Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger in the Bein studio analysing the game

together. That’s a little bit better than wheeling out Steve McManaman and Jermain Jenas again, eh? Jose couldn’t resist one little jab, though – suggesting that Klopp and Liverpool had scored early then opted to ‘park the bus’. You have to respect Jose as that is the sort of pettiness I am sure we can all get behind. One thing the Champions League final did do for us all is make us look at the Europa League final in a new light. And it also gave all those Arsenal fans a reason to come out of their dark rooms and engage in the world once again. Over in Baku, (yes, all the way over in Baku) the first-half had been equally dire without any pitch invasions – after all, I don’t think anyone was that brave or stupid to risk doing that there. Yet, in a magical little spell after the break, Chelsea did what Chelsea tend to do in these situations and find a way to win where Arsenal did what Arsenal tend to do and, you know, find a way to lose. It will be a sweet goodbye for both Eden Hazard and Maurizio Sarri, both sure to leave the club over the summer with their winners’ medals tucked in their pocket. As for Chelsea, they’re still likely to turn to Frank Lampard’s Derby County manager, Frank Lampard after he led them to Championship glory by winning their biggest match of the season against Leeds United. And with that, the club football season was over. Gone. Finished. Never to be seen again. Until, of course, Sky get hold of it all again next season and remind us all of every single moment through the medium of highly irritating montages.

One very good race Another great turnout of 17 competitors sailing 10 boats for the SAMM races. There was a dead calm when everybody arrived but, as forecast, the wind picked up to 4.5 to 5 knots at the start then built quickly to 6 to 8 knots where it remained for the whole 75 minute (4500 seconds) race. Everybody made a good start and the fastest boat in the fleet, Topaz Duo, soon pulled ahead hotly pursued by two groups, the Laser Radial, Laser 1, Omega and Laser 2000 then a few minutes later the two Sailfish 18’s and the two Gamba’s with the diminutive Sea Hopper bringing up the rear. These two groups had some exciting and tight racing amongst themselves, with boats constantly changing position, as the individual crews tried different tacks to gain the advantage, and lapping within seconds of the rest of the group This order continued for a few laps but

eventually a couple of mishaps soon had the fleet spread out all around the course. The about to finish signal was sounded at 4230 seconds and the boats finished in between 4252 and 4619 seconds. The corrected times gave the honours to the Sailfish ‘Mistral’ (Julian Pering and Steve Rocks) with the other Sailfish ‘Ginetta’ (Ian Sinclair and Peter Beck) second just 3 seconds behind. A brilliant performance by the two largest boats in the fleet. By the time the 5 minute warning signal was sounded for the second race the wind had increased to 12 gusting 15 knots the maximum for safe sailing for SAMM members, most of who are between 60 and 75 years old. Within four minutes it had increase further to 15 gusting 18 so the Race officer was forced to cancel. For more info about SAMM and its race program go to www.sailingmarmenor.com
