CALLS FOR ROAD SAFETY IMPROVEMENT T he Neighbourhood Association Archangel of San Miguel has called for a new road to be built between the town of San Miguel and its satellite urbanisations after a new accident saw a driver have a lucky escape as her car ended in the ditch at the side of the road last week. During the accident, the car left the narrow and winding tarmac road, skidded and embedded itself against the fence of the orange grove. Accidents are an all too common occurrence on the road to Eagles Nest, Las Filipinas, Blue Lagoon and El Galan. This is a busy road with high levels of traffic including farm vehicles and lorries. The road is the only one linking the heart of the traditional urban centre of San Miguel with its urbanisations. A Neighbourhood Association spokesperson said: “This dangerous road runs along the route of three cattle trails, which is a ground considered not to be

developed or in need of special protection. The legally recognised uses of this type of land is for the use of livestock and the displacement of agricultural machinery, which is complemented by leisure and nature activities such as hiking, horse riding or bike riding. “The municipality of San Miguel de Salinas, as noted by a circular from the General Direction of Sustainable Mobility of the Department of Urbanism last year, omitted the construction of a road, linking the urban areas. This means that it is impossible to modifying the current route as legislation, only allows the resurfacing with tarmac. Unfortunately, the resurfacing works carried out last month have increased the dangerousness of the road as the road surface is now higher and as there is no hard shoulder, any small mistake on the part of the drivers results in drastic consequences. The vehicles skid and leave the road without the possibility

of correcting or even getting back on the carriageway as the sides are much higher than the ground next to the road.” The Association is calling for the urgent the construction of a road that solves this serious problem which has been an ongoing issue for four decades. It is calling for the livestock roads to be released to provide the municipality with the necessary green infrastructure access for agricultural work and the leisure and enjoyment of nature by local residents. Warning for local cat owners Use our vistas – at a price This week The Costa Blanca People was contacted by local animal charity APAH, which had an unusual story which has both a chilling warning and a happy ending. A few weeks ago APAH took a cat into its cattery. There were obvious signs that the animal, which they later learned was called Rocky, had been a pet with a home and caring owners. Although he didn't

Rocky, safe and well

have a microchip, he showed signs of wearing a collar and he was desperate to be with people. He soon settled into the cattery, but volunteers noticed he wasn’t completely happy and believed that living that way was not what he was used to. One of the Cattery volunteers took a brilliant photo of Rocky and it was used for the charities rehoming advert, in the hope that someone would like the look of him and offer to adopt him. Therefore, you can imagine the surprise when the charity received a phone call from Rocky’s original owner. The person was 99 percent certain from the photo that APAH had her cat and what unravelled was an amazing story. Rocky had been missing from his home since February, and although his home was in Playa Flamenca, he was rescued from Pinar de Campoverde; so not exactly around the corner and

a long way for even an adventurous cat to stray. A meeting between the cat and his owner was arranged and the recognition on both sides was instant. The lady was absolutely delighted, as she had never given up hope that he was still alive and the cat was pretty pleased too! They went home together, but the story of his disappearance was a chilling one. According to the owner, on Urbanisation La Florida in Playa Flamenca, someone has been kidnapping people's cats and driving them away from the area before dumping them to fend for themselves. This is not an attempt to reduce the numbers of a feral colony - which people sometimes do, often by illegal and despicable means - this is forcible removal of people's much-loved and wanted pets. The lady who owned the cat also told us that one of her cats was so badly abused and injured that it cost a substantial amount of money in vet bills, let alone the associated worry and trauma, to save the cats life. An APHA spokesperson said: “This is shocking cruelty by someone who has no right to decide whether people's cats should live or die. Many of the kidnapped cats will have suffered a fate completely different to this one lucky cat. Taken from the loving security of a home, they could have died in any number of ways, from starvation or dehydration to being the result of a road traffic accident, in an area they would not be familiar with. Cat owners who live in this area need to be made aware that the lives of their cats are seriously at risk. If anyone knows who is responsible for this act of cruelty, the authorities should be made aware of what is taking place. We are hopeful that publicising what is happening and what this person is doing just might worry or even shame the person involved enough that they might stop to what they are doing.” Mireille Toddington

The salt lake is not only an important ecological resource and salt mining business, it is also in demand by marketing agencies. Now, the company who owns it, the Salins Group, has established a rate for the use of the land and facilities. It will cost €1,200 for three and a half hours of filming. This does not include extras such as night time, Saturdays, Sundays or holidays or the number of vehicles that can enter the industrial complex. For this amount you can picture the pink lagoon and the mountains of salt in your advertising literature. Such is the demand, apparently, by big companies to have a stake in the image presented by this unusual landscape. Our pink lake extends to around 1,400 hectares of water on which you can almost walk because of its salt content. There is huge potential here, of which the company is aware and it is not just about selling salt. The burnt out shell of the ‘snail’ is still evidence of the interest there is in the reportedly therapeutic value of the mud and salt combination. The ‘snail’ was to be a spa built on the edge of the lake to cater for those willing to spend money bathing in its mud. Now it is estimated that the Salins Group could collect as much as €40,000 a year by selling the right to using the images in publicity campaigns. This is in sharp contrast to the money that they can make from actually mining and selling the salt itself. Already we’ve seen the pink lake and its contrasting white salt mountains used in campaigns by the fashion industry Inditex. El Corte Inglés are also using the backdrop. Most recently Eduardo Dolón

posed in front of the salt mountains for his successful publicity campaign in glossy magazines for the PP. It is not only taking pictures of it that is proving to be popular. The tourist train route attracted more than 25,000 visitors in six months, in spite of having to be suspended for a couple of weeks due to heavy rains. It looks as though this amazing natural landscape is set to be used even more. Let’s hope this is not at the expense of the ordinary public still having access to it. Suzanne O’Connell

False gas inspector arrested

A young man posing as a gas inspector has been arrested in Torrevieja. Last month the 24 year old man from Algeria was caught after a report was made to the police. The man had entered a property without permission claiming to be there to check on a gas appliance. The owner of the property immediately called the police and although the man had fled by this time, he was caught nearby due to the description given to the police. The Belgian home owner reported that he had not asked for a gas check and that he suspected that the man had been intent on thieving from his property. The police found the intruder’s car in which was a suitcase containing items stolen from other properties including mobile phones, jewellery, a watch as well as cash in pounds and euros. These items appear to have been stolen during robberies that took place in Torrevieja, San Fulgencio and Guardamar del Segura. The items have now been returned to their rightful owners. The man has been charged with breaking and entering properties, burglary and theft and he continues to be under investigation for more crimes. He is currently in prison awaiting trial, bail has been refused.

The show entitled ‘For One Night Only’ was the last event in a month of fundraising activities on behalf of AECC (Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer). These events were organised by F.A.B. (Fighting Against Breast Cancer) who are a group of women who have all been affected by the disease. The show took place on 4th June at the Cardenal Belluga Theatre in San

Fulgencio. A very impressive total of €11,000 was raised, €1,000 more than they had been hoping to collect as a result of the month’s activities. Before the show, good luck videos were sent by the Nolan sisters as their lives have also been affected by breast cancer. Top acts appeared for free including singers Diane Diaz and Shani Ormiston. Jim McMail performed his tribute to George Michael and Chloe Lee sang in tribute to Cher. The comedian Justin Sane was also there to entertain. In between the acts, three women spoke about their breast cancer experiences. Leigh, Jean and Diane’s stories are all different but were equally moving for both the speakers and the audience. Diane Diaz was the compére for the evening which concluded with 13 women from the F.A.B committee performing their version of the Real Ladies Full Monty in honour of all those who have been affected by breast cancer. Maria Wilson and her Pink Ladies attended the evening and Maria accepted the cheque from F.A.B. on behalf of the AECC. Finally, there was a standing ovation for all those participating after the last song, ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’.

The cost of the PP electoral campaign The PP party, newly re-elected in May, has spent most of their €17,000 annual allowance on the recent electoral campaign. The money was spent between January and June and is allocated for the running of each political party. They received €10,633 at the beginning of January and another €6,900 during the following six months. Almost all of it was spent between March and June. The PP has used the money for legal

services, lawyers and office supplies. Two expenses are particularly noteworthy. One is €3,328 paid to a well-known advertising group and another to a printing press for €3,327 dated April 12th and May 5th. In contrast, Los Verdes spent €300 on a Facebook campaign. Indications continue that the hand over from the outgoing government team to the incoming will not be a harmonious affair. Tension is high and there is no love lost between the PP and the other political parties who have held office for the past four years.

Los Verdes reform Los Verdes (The Green Party) have decided to refresh their structure following the recent local elections. Following the vote on 26th May they have three councillors elected into the town’s local council. Those expected to take up these seats included Councillor José Manuel Dolón, José Hurtado and Carmen Morate. Now, the previous mayor, José Manuel Dolón and councillor José Hurtado (councillor for the budget, contracts and education) are to stand down from their elected positions. In their place councillors Carmen Morate, Israel Muñoz and Juan Carlos González, will take up their seats on the new council in opposition to the PP. The decision was taken during a two hour meeting at which Dolón and Hurtado received recognition from party supporters for the work they have done. However, they decided to stand down and allow movement in the candidacy list to allow for a fresh start and a new structure. Explaining his decision to stand down, José Manuel Dolón pointed out that he had been a councillor for the last 28 years and spent the last four as mayor. He was keen to add that he would still be offering his support and would continue to be an active part of the Green Party but believed that it was time for a restructure. ‘The people who voted for us,’ explained José Manuel Dolón, ‘know that we are still going to be here. It isn’t a desertion, it’s a restructuring of the party. We will be collaborating with the councillors.’ Three other members of the party on the candidacy list have been unable to take up positions as two of them have work commitments outside of the town and Manuela Osuna has health issues. José Hurtado, is a secondary school teacher of philosophy, he explained that in 2015 he encouraged José Manuel Dolón to head the Green’s List at a time when he had just retired. José Hurtado himself has been involved in politics for

16 years, ‘now with the resurgence of the PP,’ explained Hurtado, ‘it’s the best time to stand aside, not to stand back. We are not abandoning anyone. Instead we will be helping our councillors.’ Carmen Morate is already known as a practising councillor. During the last mandate she has been actively involved in changing practice at the animal shelter and improving conditions for the animals kept there. She has supported the foreigner community and is a well-known figure amongst English speakers. Now, she will head the list of Los Verdes and take a strong stand in the opposition. In second place is Israel Muñoz who was previously the advisor to the mayor during the last mandate and was fifth on the candidacy list. In third place is another well-known figure in the foreign community; Juan Carlos González will become councillor following his position as director of the International Residents’ Office. Juan Carlos was originally in eighth position on the candidacy list. Los Verdes have also been analysing the results of the 2019 election. In 2015 they had four councillors and this time, their share of the vote was reduced meaning that only three were elected. In response to this. José Hurtadoaccepted that some votes might have been lost because of their alliance with Compromís but that they did not consider this to be substantial and that it was to be expected. T

he councillor of Urban Transport, Begoña Cuartero, has announced that the taxi services for Orihuela and Torrevieja will jointly serve the coast during this summer to ensure that the high demand from tourists on the coast can be met. This agreement comes after a meeting between the Town Councils of the two municipalities and the approval of the regional Consell. "The relevant departments have given the goahead that, after the success of last year, the taxi drivers of Orihuela and Torrevieja work together on the coast this summer, with the aim of providing a better service to local residents and tourists, "said Cuartero. The Councillor reported that "this joint service will be offered from 16th June to 15th September. In addition to the increase in population, this arrangement also addresses the problems of accessibility drivers face on the N332.” The Department of Urban Transport has informed the Local Police of Orihuela regarding the regime of reciprocity for this period, during which an inter-urban fare will be applied to the whole journey.

Councillor Cuartero During this time, passenger cars with VT transport authorisation with a taxi license in Torrevieja will be able to carry out the service from the following locations in Orihuela: Playa Flamenca, La Zenia Boulevard, Cabo Roig and Villamartín. Similarly, vehicles with Orihuela's taxi license will be able to complete services originating from the following stops in Torrevieja: Paseo de la Libertad, Industrial Park, Bus Terminal and Public Hospital. Councillor Cuartero thanked the City Transportation Council of Torrevieja and the associations of taxi drivers of both municipalities, for their involvement and collaboration in this project, which improves the tourist image of both cities. Finally, after years of procrastination, Punta Margalla is in the final stages of restoration. This important promenade stretches from Las Columnas on the Playa del Cura to the Cala del Palangre and the avenida de La Purísima. The work began on 1st February and is now expected to be completed at the beginning of July. The work is being paid for by the Provincial Council of Alicante and Torrevieja town council. The work has badly needed doing for decades and means that the area now falls in line with other paseos in town including that of Juan Aparicio. The area around Las Columnas was finished some time ago and now we are in the last stages of the completion of the furthest parts of the walkway.

Petanque pitches were not included in the original design but these have been re-introduced due to requests from local residents. Modifications have also been made to rainwater channels in order to try and prevent vehicles being stranded due to flood water. In total, an area of 11,750 square metres of ground has been improved with new green areas, children’s play areas and seating. The steps have been demolished along with the balustrade which had fallen down several times already. Plans to renovate this area originally began in 2010 but it took six years of delays and haggling before it was eventually put into operation in 2016. Suzanne O’Connell

Alcoholics Anonymous Open Meeting Friday 14th June Using the hashtag #YoSoyTorrevieja, the Habaneras commercial centre is arranging a number of activities aimed at raising awareness of the environment and how to protect it. The campaign this summer has a particular focus of improving the cleanliness and condition of the beaches. The campaign has been launched in agreement with the town hall in

Torrevieja and Agamed with the aim of sharing the ambition that we bring the issues to everyone’s attention through education. The three organisations; the town hall, Habaneras and Agamed are focussing on promoting the importance of protecting the marine environment. The campaign got underway on 5th June to coincide with World Environment Day. To launch the event,

Habaneras has unveiled a sculpture of a white shark which will be used to hold plastic containers collected by the town’s people on the beaches. These will be brought from the collection points that have been organised. The campaign has been launched with the agreement of the Guardia Civil and there will be a large raffle with bicycles as prizes for those who participate by collecting the plastic.

Alcoholics Anonymous is holding an open meeting on Friday 14th June at 12 noon, in Calle San Miguel De Salinas 2, Torrevieja. (Not to be mistaken for the town of San Miguel). There will be two members of A.A sharing their experience. Everyone is welcome. If you think you have a problem with alcohol, or someone in your family or a friend may have a problem come along and listen to what they have to say, we are there to help. Admission is free. Look forward to seeing you.

Summer fire prevention for the Coast T

he Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuaña and the Councillor for Emergencies, Víctor Valverde, have given details of the Civil Protection fire engine which is brought into service each year to coincide with the arrival of summer, aimed at the prevention of forest fires. The Fire engine will have a permanent base in Orihuela Costa and another will be located in the districts and they will be manned 7 days a week and the schedule of cover will be from 10am to 6pm. "Four new troops have been added to the four existing ones and we have tried to start them as soon as possible, since a very hot summer is expected. In fact the teams are

already active," Councillor Valverde explained. He also stressed that the service is highly effective "who know the municipality really well and in many cases the fire prevention team arrives at the place of incidence before the other emergency services. They will also carry out general prevention work especially in areas where there is a forest or woodland. " The campaign has already begun and will continue until 30th November, since once the summer period ends a period begins where the municipality must be prepared for a possible cold drop, or gota fria, that may come. "Once the summer service is finished, what will be done will be to control the channels and ravines of the entire municipal area in terms of rubbish and blockages ," said the Emergency and Civil Protection Coordinator, Pepe Andúgar, who also said that “in Orihuela Costa we will have a Zodiac rib prepared for any type of emergency that may arise in the sea.” Mayor Emilio Bascuñana wanted to highlight the effort made by the Emergencies Department "to meet the needs of our municipality in the best possible way, with the complexity that this entails in summer due to the very nature and diversity of our municipal area". He explained: "New additions have been made and the equipment in this area has been improved, with the aim of continuing to always improve emergency services. We also want all citizens to exercise extreme caution, but these resources serve to give us greater peace of mind and in case there is an incident, that it will dealt with as soon as and as efficiently as possible." New refuse collection contract to be challenged The incoming local government elected on 26th May will aim to stop the new contract for cleaning services developed over the last two and a half years. The PP local government will take over on 15th June and they have made their intentions clear that they wish moves towards the awarding of the new contract to be frozen. The refuse collection and cleaning service has been one of the most controversial areas for discussion over the

past four years. The current service employs 200 permanent workers and 90 temporary workers. The new contract is worth around 81 million euros and is intended to cover the next four years with one possible year of extension. It is now being claimed that the contract could mean less workers being employed as it includes technological advances such as the use of side-loading trucks which reduces the number of

personnel needed for each vehicle. It’s also claimed that the new contract extends the working day from 37.5 hours to 40 hours a week. There is some uncertainty as to the extent to which the PP can put a stop to the contract’s progression. Sources from the outgoing government team have suggested that it can only be challenged now by a bidding company. Suzanne O’Connell

GBP / EUR UPDATE Ongoing Brexit uncertainty is continuing to weigh on the pound, and is currently being compounded by the political uncertainty as Theresa May’s tenure as Prime Minister comes to an end and the Conservative Party seeks a new leader to take over the role. The pound is likely to remain volatile until a clear picture emerges both on the UK’s new leader and the road ahead for Brexit. Brexiteer Boris Johnson is currently the

bookies’ favourite at 6/4 in the Conservative Party leadership race. MP Sam Gyimah is the only candidate calling for a second referendum, and the differing views among the many candidates makes it hard to see the future direction. Manufacturing and Construction PMIs both fell short of forecast by two points, coming in at 49.4 and 48.6 respectively. In addition, a report from the British Retail

Consortium showed sales were down 3% in May compared with the same month last year, and “political and economic uncertainty” were given as the most likely causes. It’s clear that positive news for the pound is thin on the ground; the US President’s promise of a “phenomenal” trade deal was met with scepticism over concerns about the impact on British standards for goods and the NHS. The euro also struggled this week after some missed targets on Service Sector PMIs and growing speculation about what the next move of the ECB might be. The French Services PMI missed forecast and came in at 51.5, still in the growth zone, and Italy was a neutral 50.0. There were some results that came in above forecast, but the mood was dampened by the uncertainty in Germany as the fallout from the European Elections suggested that public opinion was leaning towards the German Green party and away from Angela Merkel’s ruling coalition between the CDU and the SDP. Investors are looking to the ECB for action as inflation remains below its 2% target but there is no agreement on exactly what action would be appropriate. There is little room for further interest rate cuts and a return of the quantitative easing programme would be likely to have a detrimental effect on the euro.

Congratulations to Mare Nostrum

Torrevieja’s mayor, José Manuel Dolón and the councillor for sport, Victor Ferrández, congratulated the female ‘cadet’ handball team, Torrevieja Salud Mare Nostrum, during a presentation on 5th June. The team had recently been declared the Spanish champions on 2nd June during the final part of the tournament which was held in Torrevieja. The mayor congratulated them for their passion and dedication and thanked them for promoting the good name of Torrevieja and raising its profile in such a positive way. Councillor Ferrández noted the

Clairvoyance for charity On Wednesday 16th May an evening of clairvoyance was held at Bar Sacko’s in El Limonar in aid of the San Jóse Obrero Orphanage. Four mediums gave their time for free and the co-ordinators of the event would like to thank Belinda Bradley, Morag Bullock, Debbie Blevins and Sammy Fitzsimmons for their support. The evening began with the co-ordinators for fundraising events on behalf of the orphanage, Ken and Lyn Adams, explaining more about it and the

importance of the example they are setting to other young people when it comes to taking up sports and keeping healthy. The Torrevieja Salud Mare Nostrum team became champions following their defeat of Beti Onak Navarro with a score of 28 to 25. The final leg of the championship in Torrevieja included the eight best clubs across the country. The team is coached by Susana Fraile and Diana Box and during the championship they enjoyed the support offered by the crowd in their home town. During the reception recognition was also given to tennis star Alejandro Manzanera from Almoradi. He had won the Mutual Madrid Open tournament in the under 16 category after beating Daniel Mérida 6-2, 6-2 in the final. He trains at Club de Tenis de Torrevieja and follows in the steps of Nicola Khun who won the same title in 2012. Both the handball team and Alejandro were presented with a salt ship gift, and copies of the book ‘Sensaciones’ which is a collection of photographs by Tomás Ortíz. Suzanne O’Connell

reasons why the money is so badly needed. The orphanage is home to children between the ages of 6 and 16 whose parent are unable to care for them. During the evening there was also opportunity to take part in a raffle and altogether €300 was raised. The cheque for this was then presented to the Director of the Orphanage along with €200 vouchers for clothes which Belinda and Kevin donated. The orphanage is always in need of funds to support the children and young people who live and work there. Ken and Lyn would like to hear from any clubs or associations who think they might be able to help with their fundraising events. They can be contacted on 676 650 210. Suzanne O’Connell

Employment in Spain close to a historical high After more than five years of job creation, Social Security affiliation in Spain is near a historical high. There were 211,752 new contributors to the system in May for a total of 19.44 million, according to figures released by the Labour Ministry. That is just a few thousand shy of the record number posted in July 2007, one month before the first clear signs of the impending economic crisis. Meanwhile, May unemployment fell by 84,075, for a total of 3,079,491 people without a job. May is typically one of the best months for the job

market in Spain, together with April, June and July. This suggests that the Social Security affiliation record could be broken, even if the pace of job creation has slowed down a little. The new contributors came from all sectors of the economy. The most relevant industry was the hospitality sector, which added 76,591 new workers. Most new contributors were salaried employees, while the number of new self-employed workers grew much more slowly.

Nearly nine million job contracts were signed in the first five months of the year, a 2.34 percent rise from the previous period. But nearly 8.1 million of these were temporary contracts, while permanent ones continued to drop as part of an ongoing trend this year. The government said that this is due to the elimination of permanent contracts with an option to fire the worker without compensation during the first year, an option that had been introduced in 2012 as part of a sweeping labour reform.

School calendar

An outline of the school calendar for 2019 to 2020 has now been released by the Alicante provincial government. The school year will begin on 9th September for children in primary and secondary education in the province’s schools, including Torrevieja. The school year will end on 16th June for Secondary schools and on 18th June for infant and primary schools according to information released by the Conselleria de Educación. The dates for Christmas include holidays from 23rd December to 6th January and for Easter from 9th to the 20th April 2020. The Spanish school system does not include half term holidays but is broken up into three ‘trimestres’ which include what’s called the Autumn, Spring and Summer term in the British school calendar. In June and September, primary schools close an hour earlier, finishing at 1pm. Other days when schools will be closed include 9th October, 1st November, 6th December, 19th March and 1st May. Additional dates can be expected to be added to this as local holidays are announced. Those people with children at local state schools can now at least begin to plan ahead a little. Seagate Wealth Management

Are Your Savings Still In The UK? M

any people who have moved to Spain do not want to bring all their savings and investments with them to this country. Spanish banks do not have a great track record and then there is currency question – Sterling or convert to Euros? One of the main problems with keeping your money in the UK, is a lack of adviser to keep an eye on your investments and switch funds when the need arises. Your UK financial adviser should not continue to work on your behalf if you are living as a Spanish tax resident. Another problem is that UK based savings like ISA’s, Premium Bonds and other NS&I products are not suitable for Spanish residents. As a Spanish tax resident there are a number or products offered by some of the worlds’ largest financial institutions specifically tailored to meet your investment needs. Indeed, one such provider, Prudential International, have a Spanish tax compliant savings bond that outperforms the UK equivalent simply because of the taxation treatment. Here at Seagate Wealth we understand that many ex‐pats do not wish to bring their money to Spain and for that reason we work with a number of product providers to ensure their money works as hard as possible with minimum risk. The Prudential savings bond offers clients a way to grow their money virtually tax‐ free, with no need to report on their annual tax return or the Modelo 720. The other major benefit is the money is not held here in Spain, but in the Republic of Ireland. The Seagate team has a wealth of experience in providing advice on all aspects of savings and investment options. If you have an investment, but no adviser, we can help to get your portfolio back on track.

Feng Shui your bedroom Feng Shui is one of those techniques that we're all likely to have heard of, but not many know how to correctly follow. The ancient Chinese method is said to help create balance and happiness in life – and all it takes is some rearranging. Here's some tips for getting started on your bedroom: Keep your bed away from the door Your bed should be a good distance away from the nearest door wherever possible, in order to create some space. It also helps to create air flow under and around the bed, so wherever possible pick a bed with legs, and avoid cluttering the space underneath. If your room allows, keep beds away from the wall and place a table either side, if possible. A headboard is also thought to be good Feng Shui, as you want as much support behind your head as possible. Try to avoid sleeping underneath a window.

Consider your colour palette According to Feng Shui, certain colours can bring different energies into our lives. Before decorating, ask yourself what you want to bring to your life. • Pastels will add peace and restfulness • Grey and white will bring clarity and efficiency • Yellow and beige bring stability and protection • Fire colours, such as red, pink and orange, will give energy and passion

Create air-flow Open windows as much as possible in your bedroom to let fresh air in, and invest in a good quality air-purifier. Be aware that fragrance oils may have ingredients that could disrupt Feng Shui. However, essential oils are a good addition to the bedroom. Contrary to popular belief, plants may not bring good Feng Shui. They are thought to possess too much Yang, meaning there will be too much energy and you may struggle to get the rest you need. If you do have plants in your room, try to keep them as far away from the bed as possible.

Choose soft lighting A bright, harsh light will prevent you from properly relaxing. Use lamps to

light your bedroom, or install a dimmer switch. Avoid having a light directly above your bed, if you can.

Pick beautiful artwork Pictures of calming scenes are particularly good on the walls, as they may help to soothe you. Choose things that make you happiest; however, avoid pictures of water as these could invite possible financial loss or robbery.

Get rid of clutter As Marie Kondo says, if it doesn't spark joy; throw it out. Keep walkways and floor space as clear as you possibly can, and keep it as much of an oasis as you're able to. After all, the bedroom is the one place where you should feel truly at-home and relaxed.

The long goodbye

My mother suffered from dementia for many years before she died. She lived a good old age, so we can’t feel ungrateful, however I have not grieved in the way I thought I would. I won’t say it’s had no effect on me at all, I am very sad, however this is not the way I thought I would be when losing my mother. Mother and I were always very close, but almost as soon as the dementia started, it changed her. She turned into a child overnight. For the rest of her life she was more often than not very grumpy, self absorbed, demanding, and had absolutely no empathy for anyone. All this I know to be true of patients with dementia and so I tried to be understanding. However I found it very difficult when I had a cancer diagnosis. There were times when I couldn’t be with her because of treatment

www.costablancapeople.com

and illness, and when I told her, she couldn’t have cared less. This was not my mother. The slow decline upset me more over the years than her death did, but I feel horrible for it. You hit the nail right on the head here. This was not your mother; not the mother you knew anyway. When people suffer from Dementia and Alzheimer’s it literally changes them into someone you don’t recognise anymore, and I think ‘the long goodbye’ as it is sometimes referred desensitises you, so when death finally comes you can feel quite numb about the whole thing. You are concerned that you did not grieve, but I think you have. I think you grieved every day for all these years for your mother’s loss, so you shouldn’t be so hard on yourself. It might help you to look on the many forums online for help in coming to terms. Have a chat to someone who’s been in the same situation, and I can assure you there are many.

Spain suffers less congestion than most of the world Next time you're stuck in a traffic jam anywhere in Spain, count your blessings because none of the country's towns or cities are in the world's top 100 gridlocked locations, nor even in Europe's top 60. In fact, the Spanish city with the longest traffic queues – Barcelona – is only 118th in the world out of 403 metropolitan areas in 57 countries and 61st in Europe. Cádiz is the city with Europe's fewest traffic jams and, worldwide, is only beaten by Greensboro-High Point in the USA, which is at number 403. According to the recentlyreleased TomTom Traffic Index 2018, drivers in the central hub of Barcelona take an average of 29 percent more time to get to their destination than they would on an empty road or one where cars were flowing freely. Surprisingly, Madrid is only joint fourth-most gridlocked city in Spain along with Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Palma de Mallorca is the second-most congested city in Spain, with drivers having to allow 25 percent extra time, followed closely by Granada, slowing motorists down by 24

percent - although future annual indices for the latter may also see it drop down the rankings, since the opening of a high-speed AVE railway line on 26th June and plans to double its destinations within the next couple of years mean the once-isolated Alhambra Palace venue will gradually be able to rely much more heavily on public transport. In the centre of the south-coast city of Cádiz, drivers only need to allow an extra 9 percent for their journey time than they would on an open road with the same speed limits. Traffic volumes have increased since 2017 in the majority of Spanish cities, albeit only by around 1 percent - with the exception of Alicante, Santander (Cantabria), Vigo (Galicia), Cartagena (Murcia) and Oviedo (Asturias), where vehicle numbers have not changed, and Granada and San Sebastián (Basque Country) having reduced their congestion by 1 percent. In Europe, out of the top 13 most gridlocked cities, four are in Russia, with Moscow being the worst, as drivers have to allow 56 percent extra time to reach their destination. Istanbul is the

second-most congested city in Europe, involving 53 percent extra travel time, and Kiev (Ukraine) is fifth, with an additional 46 percent of time needed to get anywhere. Bucharest (Romania) is the most gridlocked city in the EU and the third-busiest on the European continent, requiring 48 percent more driving time; Athens is the second-busiest EU city and the seventh-most congested in Europe itself (40 percent extra time needed); Rome, Italy and Warsaw, Poland are joint third in the EU and eighth in Europe (39 percent extra time), whilst the remainder of the top seven in the EU and top 13 in Europe are Brussels and London jointly (37 percent extra time needed) and Paris (36 percent). The world's most-gridlocked city is Bombay – latterly known as Mumbai – on India's west coast, where journeys take 65 percent longer because of the traffic. Colombia's capital, Bogotá is the second-worst with 63 percent extra time required, followed by the Peruvian capital, Lima and that of India, Delhi, together (58 percent), and Moscow.

7 Words you need to understand, when buying in Spain Rebecca Serwotka

Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward – 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today! Featured on Best Buy Spain – Property TV – Sky Channel 189.

Do you think the Spanish people speak fast? It always sounds like they’ve got so much to say, and so little time to say it. So they have to speak as fast as they can, to get it all out as quickly as possible! When you’re buying a home in Spain, you get more involved in the whole process than that of the U.K. And when you’re sitting in the Notary’s office, ready to complete your purchase, you’ll hear the local professionals jabbering away between themselves. Unless you “habla Español” you’ll not have a clue what they’re even talking about!

Never fear, my home buying amigos! Mi casa es su casa! Here’s a quick translation of the 7 most important words you’ll hear during the buying process, that you may not be accustomed to: 1. ESCRITURA: (Pronounced “Ess-kree-tour-a”) Title Deeds 2. NOTARIO: (Pronounced “No-ta-reo”) Notary; A Public Official Authorised By The Government That Prepare The Title Deeds. 3. REGISTRO DE LA PROPIEDAD: (Pronounced “Rehhist-row Day La Prop-e-eh-dad”) Land Registry. 4. NOTA SIMPLE: (Pronounced “Not-ah Sim-play”) Land Registry Search 5. ABOGADO: (Pronounced “A-bow-ga-doe”) Lawyer 6. HIPOTECA: (Pronounced “Ippo-tech-a”) Mortgage 7. N.I.E. (Numero Identificacion Extranjero): (Pronounced “New-me-row E-dent-if-e-kath-eon Extran-hay-row”) Foreign Tax Identification Number; Most times you’ll hear the locals say “Knee-eh” for short. So now you’re ready with the jargon, you can better understand a few of the most important words you’ll most definitely come across, during your home buying journey! And with a little practice, you’ll be able to actually say them yourself! ¡Suerte! (Good luck!)

Bingeworthy Box Sets The Young Pope Young and charming, newly elected Pius XIII, aka Lenny Belardo, is the first American Pope in history. His ascension appears to be the result of a simple, effective media strategy implemented by the College of Cardinals. In the Vatican, however, the prevailing wisdom is the church's leaders have chosen a mysterious figure as their guiding force. And Pius XIII proves to be the most mysterious and contradictory of them all. As Belardo begins his reign, he is stubbornly resistant to the Vatican stewards, instead relying on Sister Mary to serve as his chief adviser. While she urges him to focus on leading his billion followers, the young pope shows little interest in making himself known, either to the College of Cardinals or to the masses. The 10-episode drama series stars Jude Law in the title role and Diane Keaton as Sister Mary, a nun from the U.S. now living in Vatican City

The Affair

"The Affair" explores the emotional/psychological effects of two affairs. Young diner waitress Alison and her husband, rancher Cole, are struggling -- personally and financially -- in the wake of tragedy. Noah, a settled teacher and would-be novelist, is summering at his in-laws' Hamptons estate with his wife, Helen, and four kids. When Noah meets Alison, they begin an affair. For her, he's a welcome escape; for him, she's a pretty distraction. But, the tryst eventually ends two marriages -- one that was already a bit shaky, the other that was on solid ground.

Being sedentary affects heart health The Increase in being sedentary at work, thanks to new technology, negatively affects our cardiovascular health •

Almost 83% of the population barely performs any physical activity while at work.

The changes seen at modern workplaces, marked by the use of new technologies, have created increasingly sedentary working environments, which have a very negative influence on cardiovascular health, particularly among the younger active population, state Cardiology specialists at Quirónsalud Torrevieja and Murcia hospitals. According to the data obtained by the Ministerio de Sanidad, ServiciosSociales e Igualdad [Ministry for Healthcare, Social Services and Equality] in 2012, 82.6% of the population barely performs any physical activity during their job or main occupation, and the numbers continue to increase. For Doctor Juan Luján,

Cardiologist at Quirónsalud Torrevieja Hospital, “the lack of physical activity implicit in most current work positions, together with an abandonment of the Mediterranean diet, has as a consequence an increase in obesity and the early development of cardiovascular diseases and high blood pressure, especially among the younger population.” “People who do not perform any type of physical activity in their job,” points out Doctor José Nieto, Cardiologist at Quirónsalud Murcia Hospital, “present a risk between twenty and thirty percent higher of suffering a cardiovascular event than those who perform work that requires some form of physical activity.” “These risks increase significantly for people who accumulate over seven hours a day of sedentary work, especially if they sit for over thirty minutes without getting up,” indicates Doctor Luján. Doctor Nieto recommends periodically getting up from our work station to talk on the phone or with a co-worker, walking up and down the stairs that lead to our office, and taking breaks to walk. Tips to care for our Cardiovascular Health in the Workplace The specialists at Quirónsalud hospitals recommend following

the guidelines while at work in order to enjoy good cardiovascular health: • When possible, walk to work, park your vehicle further, or get off the bus one stop earlier. • Use the stairs instead of the lift at our workplace. • Get up from your desk every half an hour to walk around a bit. • Take advantage of breaks to take a walk. • Stretch at the beginning and end of the workday. • And if, despite everything, you have a very sedentary job, it becomes even more necessary to include physical activity in your lifestyle habits outside of work. Finally, the specialists remind us that, “although most people don’t need a special assessment when starting to perform physical activity, examination by a specialist is recommended. In case you suffer from diabetes or present several cardiovascular risk factors, it may be advisable to undergo a stress test before starting an exercise programme.” Please note that all information contained within this Costa Blanca People Business Profile has been provided by the client, and is therefore deemed correct and accurate. Brit falls from 15th floor in Benidorm A British holidaymaker has died after falling from the 15th floor of his apartment block in Benidorm. Colin McGarry from Belfast, died after plunging from the balcony of Torre Gerona in the ‘Little England’ area of the Costa Blanca resort. The 48year-old had arrived in Alicante on the Friday with a group of friends. A post-mortem is due to take place in Spain and local police are probing the incident, but have not released any information. It is understood the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust is assisting the McGarry family in arranging to have Mr McGarry’s body brought home, which is expected to take up to 10 days. Colin’s family say they have been left "heartbroken" by the tragedy. Mr McGarry's family and his fiancee, Gail McMillan, were informed of the tragedy in the early hours of Sunday. Ms McMillan, who had been in a relationship with Mr McGarry for 26 years, said she had been left

feeling "numb". She said her partner, a former boxer with Sacred Heart Boxing Club, had been unsure whether to go on the trip which was booked in February. However, as a massive Liverpool fan, he decided to go when it co-incided with the European Cup clash between Liverpool and Spurs. Paying tribute to her partner who she described as "the most generous person" she knew she said: "He has taken care of me all these years. Everybody who knew him, loved him. He was family-oriented. He took care of everybody. He was such a hard worker." Lynette Brady said the loss of her brother had left their family "devastated". "We lost our daddy four years ago and Colin was like the head of the family," she said. "He just cared for and looked out for everybody. We all looked up to him. He was the one you went to for advice."

FRIENDS REUNION NEWS If there's one person who keeps teasing Friends fans with a potential reunion, it's Jennifer Aniston. The actress has spoken numerous times about how she would be keen to pick up the show 15 years after it left our screens, telling Ellen DeGeneres most recently that 'anything could happen'. "Why not? You know what, because, listen, I told you this. I would do it," the actress said of taking on Rachel Green

again, before adding that she hopes the rest of the cast would be keen too. The girls would do it. And the boys would do it, I'm sure." This isn't the first time Jen An has spoken of a Friends reunion. Asked on the very same show in February 2018, she commented, "Anything is a possibility, Ellen. Anything! I mean, George Clooney got married! That's like, anything can happen! I think it's wonderful."

Sadly, though, despite Jen insisting the rest of the cast - Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, Matthew Perry and Matt LeBlanc - "would do it", a lot of them have said things previously to suggest otherwise. Matt LeBlanc, who played Joey Tribbiani, told Mail Online at the end of March 2018: "I don’t want to do it – simple. People want to know what happened to them. But it was about a finite period in a person’s life after college, before you settle down and start a family. To go back and revisit all these years later, well I don’t know what the story would be

now. They would all have moved on from that period so it just wouldn’t be the same. "Put bluntly, I don’t think anybody wants to see an old Joey having a colonoscopy." David Schwimmer, who played Ross Geller, said something similar when he appeared on Megyn Kelly Today. "Look, the thing is, I just don’t know if I want to see all of us with crutches [and] walkers," he commented. "I doubt it - I really doubt it. But thank you for asking, and moving on!"

Bars & Restaurants BEST CITIES FOR EUROPEAN DINING

Copenhagen Think of Copenhagen restaurants and most people instantly think of Noma, which has recently reopened in a new location. Given the difficulty of bagging a table (not to mention the cost), most of us will never get to sample René Redzepi’s creations - but seeing as Noma alumni have gone on to open up their own places, and other talented young chefs have been inspired to follow suit, there’s never been a more exciting time to eat out in this city. From a six-course tasting menu that puts locally grown vegetables centre stage, to a trendy Mexican taco joint, Copenhagen is brimming with fantastic foodie experiences. Paris The more than 70-strong offering of Michelinstarred restaurants in Paris is formidable, from the legendary outfit serving grand classics in the Eiffel Tower to swinging sought-after joints where, in true Parisian style, the phone is never answered and the dining room is always full. Then there are the bistros and brasseries, all veal kidneys on the menu and vintage coffee machines on the bar. And excitingly, hip, affordable joints are on the uptick, where guests can feast on everything from Asian-inflected tapas to gourmet pancakes. Barcelona Barcelona's impressive food scene covers all manner of Spanish cuisines. Head to the maritime district of Barceloneta if it's paella you're after, but if you want traditional Catalan dishes it's best to stick

37

European city breaks can be defined by those all important restaurant choices. Whether you want to eat like the locals do in a tiny hole-in-the-wall, join the crowds spilling out of the latest buzzing opening, or book ahead for high-end and Michelin-starred fare – a memorable meal is a must.

inland in Barri Gòtic or Gràcia where you'll find tiled dining rooms and plenty of pa amb tomàquet (bread rubbed with tomato) and hearty fare. And of course, there are tapas everywhere – from downright classics on charming squares to modern versions at hip restaurants following in the footsteps of Ferran Adrià. Lisbon The Lisbon food scene continues to boom. An influential wave of young local chefs have remained loyal to the culture of the Portuguese table whilst reimagining it afresh, drawing on the endless bounty from the sea and coastline, the mountains, plains and vineyards. International chefs, such as acclaimed Peruvian Diogo Muñoz, have arrived too, offering diversity on a previously almost uniquely Portuguese platform. But dining out here is not merely about fashion or trends – food is held in high regard by 'lisboetas' and eating out is a necessity rather than a luxury. Just make sure you book a table. Budapest Until relatively recently, many restaurants in Budapest seemed to 'suffer' customers rather than welcome them. Hungary's proud culinary tradition withered on the Communist vine, and in the immediate aftermath the food remained stodgy and the waiting staff sullen. But all that has changed. Now you'll find restaurants catering to all tastes and budgets. Menus are imaginative, service is good, there is a sprinkling of Michelin stars, and vegetarian options go beyond breaded mushrooms and fried cheese. Raise a fork and get stuck in.

Visits for Vodka lovers Vodka, the star of many cocktail recipes, is a popular spirit that could be worth travelling for. The alcohol has a long, somewhat uncertain history dating back to at least the 14th century. Vodka also has strong roots in places like Russia and Poland. With such a storied history, there are several destinations a vodka fan might travel to learn about and experience the spirit. Here are a few places with vodkacentric attractions and fares that any lover of the spirit might enjoy. Warsaw, Poland, offers different ways to learn about and taste new and traditional vodkas. Visitors to the Polish capital can devote some educational time to this popular spirit. In 2018, a vodka museum opened in Warsaw and it's in a neo-Gothic former distillation plant. There, visitors can even book special experiences based on the history of vodka or how to pair the spirit with food. The tour company Eat Polska also offers a vodka tour in Warsaw, as well as the cities of Kraków and Gdańsk, for those interested in taking their tasting experience around town. The tour involves tasting different varieties of vodka as well as foods that contain the popular spirit. St. Petersburg, Russia, is also home to a vodka museum. The Russian Vodka Museum, appropriately, is a place where visitors to St. Petersburg can explore a collection of quirky bottles, glasses, stoppers, and other ephemera of the country's long history of vodka making. It also boasts the world's largest collection of Russian vodkas and visitors can enjoy a guided experience that includes a tasting.

The Netherlands is a rich vodka destination. Those passing through the southern part of the country can tour the Nolet Distillery, producer of Ketel One vodka, which is located in Schiedam. Whilst there, you'll also get to see De Nolet (also known as Noletmolen), which is considered to be the tallest windmill in the world, since it is used to power the distillery. Fans of Absolut Vodka can learn about the history of the spirit in Sweden. On the island of Djurgården in Stockholm, Absolut has its Museum of Spirits, home to exhibitions on alcohol in Sweden and more. The location also houses a bar, restaurant, art exhibits, and café, so visitors have plenty of ways to experience the popular Swedish vodka. Or sample local vodka in one of the southernmost bars in the world. Should you ever find yourself in Antarctica, you might consider visiting the Vernadsky Research Base, which was famously sold by the UK to Ukraine in 1996 for one British pound. The base was originally established by the British and was meant to be an Antarctic expeditionary base. The base still functions as a research centre but it's now also home to Faraday Bar, where visitors can warm up from the cold. Faraday Bar is considered to be one of the southernmost bars in the world and the place produces its own vodka, which is made from glacier water and can be purchased for $US3.Notably, straight vodka is the only drink on this bar's menu. In New York City, try a special vodka and tour a distillery. You can try plenty of

vodka flavours and labels at bars in New York City, but for a unique experience you'll likely want to check out Our/New York, which boasts being the first vodka distillery in Manhattan since Prohibition, when the creating and selling of alcohol was made illegal throughout the '20s and '30s in the US. While there, you can taste cocktails made with the label's specialty vodka, which is partially distilled, blended, and handbottled in Manhattan. Our/New York uses NewYork-City water and a special copper-based distillery system to give the vodka it's unique flavouring. The location also has a full-service bar and tasting room and visitors can embark on a 20-minute tour of the distillery. Visit Austin, Texas the home of Tito’s and other major vodka producers. Austin is home to quite a few distilleries, including that of popular craft-vodka brand Tito's. Although the craft label doesn't offer tours of its distillery, it sponsors a number of big-ticket, food-filled and music-filled events in the area that are worth visiting, like Austin City Limits, Hot Luck, and the

Austin Food and Wine Festival. In Austin, you can also visit Deep Eddy Vodka's tasting room to try some specialty flavours, like ruby-red grapefruit and sweet tea. While in Texas, you can also tour Dripping Springs, a local micro-distillery. There, you can also partake in vodka tastings. It's located in Dripping Springs, which is about 45 minutes outside of Austin.

Fat burning foods We all know the traditional dieting rules – eat less of certain foods to start shedding the pounds. But what if you could throw out the old-school rule book? What if eating more of certain foods could help to boost your metabolism, prevent blood-sugar spikes and help you burn more fat? Avocado Avocados contain high levels of monosaturated fat, which can help to slow the release of sugars into the blood stream, helping to reduce blood sugar levels. This in turn helps the body to break down fat. Research shows foods that decrease the blood sugar level force the body to burn fat in order to release energy. Turmeric This yellow spice can decrease inflammation in the body. This includes fat cells themselves, which can also become inflamed. One of the active ingredients in turmeric is curcumin, and studies show if you consume curcumin, you’ll gain less weight and have a lower percentage of body fat. Berries Berries are rich in antioxidants and are known to help burn fat. Berries are also packed with fibre and water, which can help you feel fuller for longer. Blueberries

regulate fat burning and fat storage, helping to reduce abdominal fat, while raspberries are packed with dietary fibre, which helps to improves bowel movement and keeps you feeling fuller for longer. Pineapple Pineapple contains a compound called bromelain, which works with other enzymes to help the body break down and digest fat. There is also research to suggest that bromelain can help suppress the appetite, and that it can increase fat excretion. Eggs Eggs contain high amounts of protein and are low in calories, making them a great option for fat burning. They also contain an amino acid called leucine, which acts as a catalyst in your body to burn fat and maintain muscle mass. Almonds Research has recently been carried out that shows that, on top of all the already known nutritional benefits, almonds may also be good for your waistline. A new study showed that snacking on 42g of almonds every day vs. a high-carb snack with the same number of calories not only reduced “bad” LDL and total cholesterol, but also reduced belly fat and waist circumference.

White beans White beans, such as cannellini beans, act as alpha amylase inhibitors, which basically means they can slow down the absorption of carbohydrates by blocking the enzymes needed for their digestion. This means you do not get a high blood sugar spike after eating them, which can result in the laying down of more fat. Chilli Chilli can often be found in slimming products, as it can help to stimulate metabolism, having a thermogenic effect. You can also use this miracle ingredient directly on your skin in the form of a good quality chilli oil. This can help increase circulation, reduce cellulite and increase fat burning. Salmon Salmon is a brilliant source of high-quality protein, which is beneficial for fat loss as the body must work harder to digest it This can also make you feel fuller for longer. In addition, salmon is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are shown to reduce inflammation and promote fat burning. Studies show that fish oil supplementation can help to reduce abdominal fat, as well as the stress hormone cortisol, which is also linked to fat storage.

Never eat a rare burger "I think they're done. You can eat beef rare anyway so it will be fine." Most of us have either said or overheard this at some point, especially when it comes to the summer and we all dust off the barbecues. Burgers and sausages are staples of any outdoor feast, and even if you have some fancier opinions on offer you still can't skip the basics. But according to food experts we need to be extra careful when cooking burgers. Everyone knows you can eat a steak rare so surely it's the same for burgers, right? Wrong. It turns out it's actually a very different story and eating one which hasn't been cooked thoroughly can cause serious food poisoning. It's different in restaurants, as they can put strict controls on the way burgers are cooked but we can't do this when we're cooking on the barbecue. According to the Food Standards Agency 's website, burgers which are served rare or undercooked may contain harmful bacteria which could make you very poorly. It explains: "Harmful bacteria can be carried on the surface of whole cuts of meat. When a rare

steak is seared these bacteria are killed, making the steak safe to eat. "When meat is minced to produce burgers, any harmful bacteria from the surface of the raw meat spread throughout the burger. Unless the burger is

cooked right through, these bacteria can remain alive on the inside. This applies to all burgers, including burgers made from good quality or expensive meat. That's why a burger needs to be served well done, while a steak can be served rare." And it's not just cheap meat which causes problems, as contamination can start at any point of the process including during the slaughter. There is no

way of knowing which animals carry harmful bacteria in their gut. How to check if a burger is cooked properly There are a few simple checks you can do on your burgers to check they're ready to eat. • cut the burger in the middle and check none of the meat inside is pink • check all the juices run clear • make sure the burgers are steaming hot all the way through. You can also reduce the chances of getting food poisoning by avoiding crosscontamination. To do this, make sure you: • keep raw meat separate from cooked meat • store raw meat on the bottom shelf of the shelf and keep it covered • use different utensils, plates and chopping boards for raw and cooked meat • wash your hands after touching raw meat.

Red and white meat 'have an identical effect on cholesterol' White meat has the same effect on blood cholesterol levels as red meat, researchers have discovered. It has long been believed that consuming red meat is worse for a person's cholesterol than white poultry, so scientists at Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute (CHORI), the research arm of UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland, were surprised when their study showed that consuming high levels of red meat or white poultry resulted in higher blood cholesterol levels than consuming a comparable amount of plant proteins. "When we planned this study, we expected red meat to have a more adverse effect on blood cholesterol levels than white meat, but we were surprised that this was not the case - their effects on cholesterol are identical when saturated fat levels are equivalent," said study

senior author Ronald Krauss, senior scientist and director of Atherosclerosis Research at CHORI.

This effect was observed regardless of whether the diet contained high levels of saturated fat, which increased blood cholesterol to the same degree across all three sources of protein. Krauss said their study is the first comprehensive comparison of the effects of red meat, white meat and non-meat proteins on blood cholesterol, a waxy

substance found in the blood. High levels can increase the risk of heart disease. The results indicated that restricting meat altogether, despite it being red or white, is best for lowering levels. Nonmeat proteins such as vegetables, dairy and legumes, such as beans, show the best cholesterol benefit. "Our results indicate that current advice to restrict red meat and not white meat should not be based only on their effects on blood cholesterol," Krauss said. "Indeed, other effects of red meat consumption could contribute to heart disease, and these effects should be explored in more detail in an effort to improve health." The meats analysed did not include fish, grass-fed beef, or processed products such as bacon or sausage.

Top trick to making perfect scrambled eggs There’s nothing more uplifting than seeing a golden plate of light and fluffy scrambled eggs when you wake up in the morning. Granted, they are super versatile and can be cooked many ways from fried, poached, hard-boiled, to even an omelette. But going with scrambled is always a classic choice. Forking into a pile of custardy, golden goodness, though, comes with a little technique and cooking knowledge. To start, you’ll need to make sure you have some high-quality eggs. We recommend choosing grade AA eggs because they have the best ratios of thick whites to rounded yolks. Then, you’ll need a whisk. The whisk is one of the most underrated cooking tools out there, but it’s the secret to whipping up fluffy goodness. And

if you’re looking for more, be sure to check out How to Cook the Perfect Eggs for Every Cooking Method to really master the art of making eggs the right way! And now for the big reveal… By whisking your eggs, you incorporate air, which gives your sunny scramble a soft, melt-inyour-mouth texture. Be sure to whip the egg yolk and whites together evenly so that there aren’t any streaks in the mixture. Season your eggs with your choice of spices. We like ours with a little kick, so in addition to salt and ground black pepper, we like to add a pinch of red pepper flakes. Place a nonstick skillet on the stove, and melt some grassfed butter (about half a tablespoon) in it under mediumlow heat. We think medium-low is the best temperature for

achieving a light, airy scramble. After allowing the butter to fully melt into the pan, pour your egg batter in and let it sit for a few seconds. Add your chopped veggies or shredded cheese before folding the eggs with a plastic spatula. Be sure to lightly push the eggs off the skillet and let it stir in the pan until bigger curds form. Pro tip: Kill the heat before your eggs are all cooked through. This helps you avoid overcooking them and turning them into a rubbery mess. Now, grab a plate and fork and lightly season the eggs again with pepper and salt before digging in! Check out these other mindblowing ways to use your eggs if you’re looking to get even more creative.

Summer Health Hazards In summer, you’re probably more than eager to get outdoors and soak up as much sun as you can. Your schedule might start filling up with barbecues, weekend trips with the family and plans to lounge in the park or at the beach. But just like you need to prepare your beach bag with all the essentials like towels and sunscreen, you also need to prepare yourself and your family for the dangers being outside in summer could bring. Athlete’s Foot Athlete’s foot doesn’t just happen to athletes. When feet come into contact with fungus, the skin of the foot may become infected. Dark, moist areas are prime real estate for fungi to grow; repeatedly wearing wet shoes or socks can put you at risk. If someone else with athlete’s foot walks barefoot in a locker room, the infection can also spread. Make sure to wash your feet often to prevent the condition and keep your shoes and socks clean. Bacteria at Water Parks Water parks can be a breeding ground for dangerous bacteria. If you’re not careful, exposure to these germs can make you or your family very sick. Norovirus, fungal infections and other illness can occur. To prevent these ailments, be sure to steer clear from the water if you’re sick, avoid swallowing pool water, keep cuts from being exposed to pool water and shower immediately after you leave. Biking Injuries Biking can be a great way to get some exercise without stepping foot in a gym,

but make sure you practice bicycle safety. Drowning Know the traffic laws for bicycles and Drowning isn’t as rare as you might wear the proper safety gear. Remember think. Firework injuries The Spanish love fiestas, firecrackers and fireworks! Fireworks can create some incredible displays, but they can also be dangerous, especially when people set them off near their own homes. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, an average of 280 people go to the emergency room with fireworks-related injuries each day during the month of Independence Day. Make sure to read up on the proper precautions to prevent injuries, as they can be serious. Burns are the most common injury, but damage to the eyes and ears may also occur. Food Poisoning Summer is prime time for barbecues and picnics. But don’t leave your favorite summer sides out in the sun for too long. Exposure to higher temperatures can put food at risk for growing foodborne bacteria. If you leave food out too long, you could get sick after eating it. Instead, take steps to avoid food poisoning and make sure you know how long your favourite perishable foods actually last. BBQ injuries Messing up a recipe isn’t the only risk you take when you decide to grill this

summer. Make sure to grill safely by keeping the grill far away from flammable objects, keeping your distance from the flame and cleaning your BBQ when necessary. Heat Stroke Heat stroke is most common in the summer months; if you plan on spending time outdoors, you’re going to want to know the symptoms to watch out for. Heat stroke occurs when your body temperature rises above 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Someone with heat stroke may experience confusion, altered speech, nausea, vomiting, rapid and shallow breathing, headache and increased heart rate. If you or someone near you experiences a few or all of these symptoms, call 112. This condition requires emergency medical treatment. Jellyfish Stings It is probably safe to say the during the Spanish summer you might see a jellyfish or two on the sand. Jellyfish can lurk in the ocean water as well, creeping up on you where you can’t see them. Jellyfish stings can be seriously painful; when they strike, their tentacles inject venom into the skin from thousands of microscopic barbed stingers. If you are stung, exit the water immediately and seek medical attention. Remove the barbs with a credit card or other plastic object and rinse the affected area as soon as you can. You can use ocean water to rinse, or vinegar if you have some available. Portuguese man o' wars, though different from jellyfish, pose a similar threat. Watch out for them on the sand.

Losing weight is a walk in the park Adding some extra steps to your day is a great way to lose weight, and it doesn't have to be running; walking is an effective way to shed pounds, especially if you're just starting out. According to experts "You can absolutely see weight-loss results from walking 30 minutes a day.” A 30-minute walk can burn around 150-200 calories, depending on factors like your speed and bodyweight. Some of those calories burned will come from fat, which is even better news if you really want to see results. Want to get the most calorie burn from your walk? Experts believe there are a few ways you can up the intensity. Do some hills. Adding in changes in incline (think hills) will help increase the intensity along with the total number of calories burned. If you can't make it to the top today, aim to hit the half- or even quarterway point. Gradually work your way up as you get stronger. Add in short power intervals. A few faster steps can make a big difference for weight loss. Speed up to a brisker pace for oneminute intervals, then slowing down for 30-40 seconds, and repeat for your full 30-minute

walk. Reverse your usual route. Have a particular loop that you walk every day? Simply reversing the direction will provide muchneeded variation to keep your body challenged and changing. Run a little bit, if you can. Adding short running intervals to your walk can help tremendously with

weight loss. They don't need to be any longer than a minute to make a big difference in the amount of calories you burn. Variation is key in avoiding the dreaded weight-loss plateau. That means that, as you get stronger, you should look for more challenging hills and keep pushing harder during your fast intervals, though you can still keep the walk to 30 minutes in length. Your body is a very smart machine, becoming accustomed over time to the stressors you

impose upon it. If you don't change it up, it will stop changing." Ramping up your intensity and varying routes and elevations is a great way to shed pounds consistently. How Much Should You Walk Per Week to Lose Weight? The great thing about walking is that it is low-impact, so you can do it frequently. If you're a true beginner, get started by walking three to four times per week, 30 minutes at a time. For maximum results work your way up to five or six walks per week. Try to incorporate intervals into at least two of those walks, try doing them on Tuesdays and Thursdays with steady-state cardio walks (all at the same pace) for your other three workouts, but any nonconsecutive days will do. Previous research suggests that exercising for three 10-minute intervals gives you all the same benefits as one continuous 30minute session. If you're short on time, breaking your 30-minute walk into a few shorter bursts is a great solution. No walk is too short; what matters is the total amount of minutes you hit.

Spain develops life extending cancer drug A drug which keeps metastatic breast cancer in check and provides patients with nearly two-and-a-half years grace before resistance sets in has been developed in Spain, and is now on the market. Until now, women with breast cancer with positive hormone receptors which had spread were given a hormonal treatment which would keep the disease controlled for an average of a year, after which the tumour would become immune to it, normally with fatal results. But 400 Spanish women with an HERpositive strain of breast cancer which had come back and spread have been taking Abemaciclib along with the standard hormonal treatment, via clinical trials, and are responding well, says the research team. Sold under the brand name of Verzenios, the drug stops the cancer progressing for an average of 28.2

months, according to the Lilly Foundation who developed it with the help of the GEICAM Group of cancer researchers and Madrid's Gregorio Marañón hospital oncology department. Head of Oncology, Dr Miguel Martín Jiménez – said by Nabil Daoud of the pharmaceutical company involved to be one of the top experts in their research area - has reported an excellent response rate. Work has been ongoing on creating a drug to 'turn metastatic breast cancer into a chronic condition', rather than a death sentence, since 2002, the Lilly Foundation says. Verzenios is 'very well tolerated' with 'very few side effects' and 'controls the disease in a way never seen before', Dr Martín Jiménez reveals. He explained that it supposes a 'before and after' in stage VI breast cancer and provides an 'injection of optimism' for patients. Dr Eva Ciruelos of the medical

oncology service at Madrid's 12 de Octubre University Hospital and deputy chairwoman of the SOLTI breast cancer research group says around 30,000 women are diagnosed in Spain every year with breast cancer, but only 8 percent of women diagnosed for the first time will go on to develop a metastasis, meaning 'the situation is not very frequent'. Of these 8 percent of 30,000, seven in 10 will be found to be affected with the subtype known as 'Luminal', with positive hormone receptors. Early stage benefits Dr Ciruelos says the next step is to see whether Abemaciclib offers any benefits to early-stage breast cancer, to make the drug more specific to individual patients, subtypes and stages of the disease, identify different aspects of it, and searching for different tumour markers to work out what to do when treatment fails. Ongoing research into the drug may, the team says, lead to its being a permanent, lifelong treatment for metastatic breast cancer, so as to provide more than 28.2 months of life and quality of life before the disease starts to progress again. The Lilly Foundation wants to see if it can be adapted for use in other types of tumour, and even whether it could somehow 'penetrate into the brain'. Abemaciclib in pill format has been available on prescription since the beginning of May and is said to be 'very comfortable' to take with few, if any, adverse effects.

As the weather warms up and the smell of coconut suncream lingers in the air, residents and visitors alike are blessed to enjoy the pleasure of eating and drinking in the glorious Spanish sunshine. With that in mind, the Coopers Arms in Doña Pepa, Quesada has some exciting news – the launch of its new cocktail terrace. Rod via email asks: Hello Aunty. I have Windows 10. I used to have Windows Media Player on my PC and used it successfully. It has simply stopped working for no apparent reason. I get the message "This app cannot run on your PC. Check with the software publisher". I've checked to see if it's in the settings and it is. I have followed many YouTube videos on how to reactivate/reinstall it with no luck. Can you please advise? Thank you for your help. Aunty Says: Hi Rod. Microsoft seem to be phasing out some of their old legacy apps via the latest batch of Windows Updates so maybe this is what is happening here. You could try and add it back from “Settings” “Apps and Features” and then “Manage Optional Features” where you should see Windows Media Player in the list.

Personally I dumped Microsoft’s Media Player (and Groove etc) and I use the fantastic VLC player from www.videolan.org which seems to load and run quicker than any of the other media player apps. Mervyn from Playa Flamenca asks: Like many people, I have numerous duplicate pictures on my computer, not organised very well. The Photo Stick extensively advertised on Facebook & other publications promises to solve this issue. It says that if you plug the device into your computer, it will gather and organize every photo you've ever taken. It seeks through downloads, photo libraries and more. It also organizes them according to when the photo was taken automatically removing duplicates, so you only have 1 copy of each photo. This sounds great

but reviews vary from fantastic to rubbish. What is your experience? Aunty Says: Hello Mervyn. I have been pestered with the same adverts from the PhotoStick people, and although what they are plugging is nothing new, they have packaged it up quite nicely. Basically you’re getting a USB memory stick with a bit of software/app built in that (in theory) will scan your computer for photos and videos etc. and copy them onto the USB stick and organise them for you. The reviews I have seen seem to vary considerably but generally they are not great. Maybe give Google Photos a go (which is free) and instead of a USB stick your photos are stored securely on the internet in Google’s cloud storage. Ben via email asks: A while back you recommended installing Malwarebytes and I had enjoyed a good few months but when this time expired I had to pay €40 to continue using it. Have I ended up paying for something which is free? Aunty Says: Hiello Ben. You can still get Malwarebytes for free but it is a slightly cut-down version and you will need to manually check your system rather than having the paid version do this automatically. I don’t think €40 is a lot to pay for such a useful app and I would certainly pay for it if I wasn’t such a tightarse. Email me your questions to auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com and I will see you all next week

Smoking whilst Driving It is currently not illegal to smoke whilst driving in Spain. However, the general consensus of a recent survey suggests it should be, if children are in the vehicle. There have been many stories shared through social media of drivers being fined for smoking, and although it is true that there are occasions when drivers have found themselves on the wrong side of the law, but it is not the act of smoking which has caused fines or sanctions to be issued, it is usually as a result of distraction, which can be the case when taking a cigarette out of a packet, lighting it etc, for example, or for throwing the cigarette end out of the vehicle, which is the most common infraction, and has all too often led to devastating results. In the UK, the law changed in 2015 making it illegal to smoke in a car when children under the age of 18 are on board, but in Spain it is still legal. However, eight out of ten people (86.3%) believe that it should be made illegal. This is the result from a survey conducted by the Spanish Society of Family and Community Medicine (semFYC), as part of the 20th Smoke Free Week, which took place last

week, in the run up to World Day without Tobacco, celebrated on 31 May. It is noteworthy that this percentage has increased almost ten points with respect to the study that was conducted last year when seven out of ten

respondents (77.3%) were in favour of stricter rules when children are in the car. However, if we take children out of the equation we now see the opposite trend regarding smoking when in a vehicle. In 2018, more than 60% of respondents were in favour of banning smoking in vehicle, whereas this year the figure has dropped to 54%. The semFYC association is using the data to lobby for an update of the smoking laws, which they say has had a

considerable impact on public health over the last decade although elements are obsolete, they say. In the opinion of the family doctors, "there has been a relaxation of the current rules and many things in which we were pioneers, such as the Law of Smoke Free Spaces, have been left aside". Overall, semFYC want an increase in tobacco taxes, generic packaging, the protection of existing and increase in smoke-free spaces, a ban on advertising, and financial support for treatment of those wishing to stop smoking. Almost 20% of the Spanish population smokes. Between 2017 and 2019, a slight increase in the number of smokers and a decrease in the number of ex-smokers has been detected. The average daily consumption of the smoker is almost 11 cigarettes a day. The age of initiation is at 17 years old. Meanwhile, as we approach the long, dry summer season, we are also on heightened alert for the risk of fire. It is illegal to throw anything from a vehicle and there are hefty fines for those who throw even the smallest item, like a used cigarette, from their vehicle.

Tales from the Top Flight ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Dear reader, we never liked the UEFA Nations League anyway, did we? And we’ve definitely never been on board with this whole VAR fad that seems to be stopping England winning major international titles. With about five minutes to go against the Netherlands, it looked like Jesse Lingard had successfully glossed over the fact that England had been hopelessly outclassed for the previous 85. But, those pesky officials in a room somewhere in Moscow or something had other ideas, unfairly applying the laws of the game absolutely correctly and calling time on the charade that made it look like England might be one of the two best international sides on the continent. And of course, that gave John Stones the perfect excuse to have the kind of on-field career meltdown that really is going to be difficult to recover from no matter how nice Gareth

Southgate is in post-match press conferences. England did not lose to the Dutch because they tried to play out from the back. They lost to the Dutch because

Southgate

(a) they forgot to mark the guy who scored the exact same goal for Ajax against Spurs in the Champions League semi-final, (b) because John Stones seems to think he has a divine right to an extra ten seconds on the ball and (c) decided to play the kind of pass to Ross Barkley that was only going to make the Chelsea man a subscapegoat for the whole mess. Of course, your average English fan was quick to write-off Holland’s Matthijs de Ligt as a ‘fraud’ after he conceded a penalty to Marcus Rashford following his own mistake and then got megged by Jadon Sancho – but being blunt, it is England who suffered a little bit from frauditis in this end-of-season lead balloon. Southgate’s team selection did not

smack of someone who was that bothered whether England progressed to Sunday’s final or not. I mean, had it been a World Cup qualifier where we needed three points to progress to the actual World Cup do you think he’d have left the Liverpool and Tottenham players on the bench? No, probably not. Heading into this match claiming that the Nations League was ‘very important’ to them and then picking Fabian Delph alongside Declan Rice in the middle of the park don’t feel like moves that are on the same dancefloor. Not that England’s alleged first team did much better in Sunday’s pointless third/fourth play-off match against Switzerland. I’ll level with you, I didn’t watch it. I was busy watching a proper football tournament in France. But I hear that VAR once again denied us a victory that we barely deserved and put the England fans that had chosen to hang around in Portugal (not causing trouble, honest guv, it’s the local police) the punishment they may or may not have deserved by subjecting them to another half-an-hour of that glorified training session. Still, at least England were able to win a second penalty shootout in a row. I wouldn’t put it past Southgate to have played for the 0-0 just to practice that scenario. With Maurizio Sarri almost certain to be officially unveiled as the new Juventus manager before you get around to reading this, Southgate was quick to rule himself out of the running for the Chelsea job and hoped his assistant, Steve Holland, was also sensible enough to realise that he has just that little bit more job security if he stays put with the national team. Frank Lampard is believed to be not going back to the Bridge because they had the temerity to suggest he needed

to interview for the job – after all, if beating Leeds United in Derby’s very own play-off final wasn’t proof enough that Frank is the real deal, what is? According to some very random reports, Jose Mourinho is being lined up to replace Rafa Benitez at Newcastle United. It makes perfect sense. I mean, Jose and Mike Ashley are a match made in heaven really, until you get down to the fact that Jose might just expect a bit of a transfer budget to waste. Mourinho being linked to Celtic and Newcastle in the same summer; how the mighty have fallen, right? The clubs I mean, not Jose.

Mourinho

Having snaffled a young Welsh winger called Daniel James, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has moved on to the next name on his list of young British players to be tasked with bringing the tradition of Manchester United back to Old Trafford next season. Apparently, Crystal Palace were not that impressed by United’s opening gambit of £40m for Aaron Wan-Bissaka and would prefer

them to go away and least double it. De Ligt has also been linked to United for weeks but having almost put money before his career once by even thinking about a move to Manchester he is prepared to make the world fully aware of his priorities by ending up at Paris Saint-Germain next season. Harry Maguire and James Maddison might soften the blow for Ole by agreeing to be lambs to the eventual slaughter in another doomed bid to stop the rot at United. The pair will probably cost about £100m from Leicester City and Solskjaer wouldn’t mind if they chucked in Ben Chilwell too. Eden Hazard has got his wish and will be sharing a taxi with Sarri to the airport. He’s catching a flight to Madrid and will be unveiled as a Real Madrid player on Thursday following Madrid’s oh-so-coincidental-that-it-happenedto-be-half-time-in-the-Spain game announcement that the deal had been done. The press release also coincided with the opening game in the Women’s World Cup meaning that Madrid had ambushed consecutive FIFA tournaments with their own ego. Sadly, if they’d just been able to be a little less rubbish between the two tournaments then life might be a bit nicer at Real.

Your week in Sport ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

I tell you what, as a ‘batsman’ I am a fan of this new game of cricket. No, not the Hundred – that will die on its backside within five years. I’m talking about this new game of cricket where you can get clean bowled and yet you are not out because the bails just refuse to come off. It’s not enough that the bowlers are being asked to bowl on absolute roads so that the tournament organisers can please the paying public with every score being above 300. No, they want to make it even more difficult for them by making the bails so heavy that they don’t dislodge – even if they do get hit at 85mph and above. I’ve probably seen it happen twice in my life before the Cricket World Cup 2019. And now I have seen it happen five times in 15 matches. That’s crazy. I think my favourite one so far was when Chris Gayle was batting for the Windies and was given out caught behind – the review showed that Gayle had missed it by a mile and that wooden sound the umpire picked up was the ball nicking off the off stump and going through to the keeper. But, you can’t change the bails now – we’ve started going down this river and now we need to see it through until the very end. Even if that does mean batsmen are going to get even more lives than your average domesticated feline.

I might have said in last Monday’s column that England would beat Pakistan because everyone beats Pakistan. I was saying it half-tongue-incheek as regular readers of this rubbish probably picked up on. Of course, England lost. And they lost because Pakistan were better in the field than they were. Imagine that! It turns out that those regular 300+ scores the Pakistan bats were collating in the ODI series whilst losing were just about getting their eye in. They were waiting for their proper bowling attack to turn up knowing full well they’d be OK. I’ve called Pakistan out as my wildcard for the fourth semi-final spot and they showed me why they are a wildcard in their first two matches. Battered by the Windies pacemen in the first match and then world number one beaters in the second. The disappointing thing from England’s point of view was the fact that they felt the need to copy and paste the Windies bowling plan. Just whacking it in short wasn’t working and I am not personally convinced England benefit from Mark Wood doing everything he can just to bowl a quicker ball than Jofra. Would the middle period guile of Liam Plunkett or Tom Curran not be better? England sorted themselves out against Bangladesh with Jason Roy smashing 153 before getting caught out trying to hit six sixes in a single over. He fell with his fourth swing of the bat. Are England going to win this tournament? You know what? I don’t think they will (this week).

This week’s 3rd round of the Summer Series was fished at the El Bosquet Complex Section B on the 4th June. The turnouts are now improving with the better weather having arrived and the catches are also increasing. The Master Bill Reade drawn on the boat took the top spot with 25.660kgs, in second place was Neil McBirnie with 21.500kgs and coming in to take the third place was Richard Wood with 20.460kgs. RODS & REELS

Our 9th round of the Spring Championship was also fished at the El Bosquet Complex Section A on the 5th June. It was another bright day but extremely windy it was blowing at gale force all day. Neil McBirnie had a fantastic day to take top spot with 58.000kgs, despite having to go into his swim to free a fish which lost him valuable time, and then losing over half an hour when he was unable to fish at all due to the severity of the wind. Taking second place with 15.400kgs was Mick Dixon and coming in third was Steve Budd with 10.600kg 1st Neil McBirnie with 58.000kgs fishing the pole using pellet 2nd Mick Dixon with 15.400kgs fishing the pole and feeder using pellet and corn 3rd Steve Budd with 10.600kgs fishing the feeder using corn and bread There are still some vacancies at the Club and if anyone is interested in joining please contact Richard Wood on 611451423 Tight Lines TERRY SCREEN

Imanyo Golf A fantastic day for yet another major competition in 2019, many thanks go to our new sponsor for the day, Vincent Real Estate. The format was singles full handicap stroke play, there were three categories with prizes for winners and runners up from each group with the best Nett score being the overall winner. On arrival at the course we received a friendly greeting from Antonio and staff at Altorreal, the course was in great condition although the greens were sandy as they had just been hollow tinned but that made no difference to the scores achieved, and the weather was fantastic at 30o and slightly overcast. Winner of the Vincent Real Estate Plaque was group C winner, Tony Whyatt, with an incredible eight under par Nett score of 62.9, runner up from group C was Alan Boyden with a 3 under par Nett score of 68, winner of group B was Chris Darling, also with an incredible Nett score 7 under par of 63.9, runner up from group B was

Miguel Garcia with 6 under par Nett score of 66, winner of group A was Alec Aspden with Nett score 68.7 and runner up from Group A was “The Wine Collector” Brian Court with Nett score of 70.1. The nearest the pins winners were hole 2 in two shots Martin Gadney, hole 5 Chris Darling, hole 8 Chris Houghton, hole 10 Simon Dakers, hole14 in three shots “Keep it in the family” Alan Ralph and hole 17 Chris Darling. Best front nine went to Tony Whyatt with a fantastic Nett score of 28.5 and best back nine went to Alan Boyden with an incredible Nett score of 31. The presentation was held back at Imanyo’s, thank you to Vincent’s Real Estate for providing all the prizes and thank you to Antonio, Norma and staff at Imanyo’s for the great food and hospitality. The football card winner was our Charity Queen Dons Ralph with Leicester City winning €40 and making €40 for our charities 2019.

the tricky 14th. Thanks for the beers boys! Ken Robertson took the honours on the day with a resounding 42 points. Hot on his heels, with 41, was Geoff Biggerstaff and in third place with 38 points was Olga Douglas. It was the ‘counter game’ on Friday and in first place with 96 points (which is 10 less than our record) were John and Ellen Drakesmith, Heinz Lei and the ever faithful ‘Albert’. Por ultimo, in the words of the great William Wordsworth himself ‘Golf is a day spent in a round of strenuous idleness.’ Pues hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell

San Miguel Golf Society President’s Trophy Final Round

A very good turnout of 45 members and 3 guests arrived at Villamartin to play a course in good condition, although with greens still showing signs of recent hollow-tining, and quite possibly the warmest temperature during a round of any society golf day to date this year. The latter took its toll on some. A lot was at stake, being the final contributing round to this season’s President’s Trophy, a President unable to attend due to illness, but in the thoughts of several. Some of those who had returned from the previous weekend’s golfing trip away to Albacete, where Robin Eastman had taken the main prize, appeared to continue being a touch worse for wear, having only got home on the Monday night. Liz Sully, with a superb 42 points, was easily the day’s best scorer. Simon Speak and Keith Wickham were the other two

Las Ramblas Golf Society Quesada Bowls Club A PAIR OF ACES! Just ½ a point separated our top three teams in Monday’s Texas Scramble. By a whisker and with a nett score of 59.375 our winners were Ron Phipps, Mike Mahony and Mike Chapman. On to Wednesday and it was round 5 (of 6) for the Club Championship Stableford. John Shervell and Alan Douglas both managed a ‘2’ today but went home empty handed after Reg Akehurst (at the ripe old age of 89) scored a hole in one on the 6th. Now a hole in one is a rare thing indeed but not long afterwards Andy McDonald also managed to get one! This time it was on

With a bye this week, Quesada Lancasters had a day off to enjoy the stunning blue skies and soaring temperatures. Whilst the Blenheims, their sister team, enjoyed a convincing win 10-2 against Vistabella Fairways in the South Alicante Summer League Spitfire Division. The shots were 98-70 and this result puts the Blenheims in 3rd place in the league, with a game in hand. So lots to play for in the next few weeks. Meanwhile in the VCL league, Quesada Tigers played Vistabella Saxons in a tightly fought match. With convincing wins for the Tigers in the Mens singles and the Rinks disciplines, the pairs narrowly lost on the last end by one point. This meant that Vistabella won the match 8-4 but the shots score was close with Vistabella winning 75-68. Quesada Lions played San Miguel and delivered another strong performance winning the match 10-2 points and 9176 shots. This puts them in 2nd position in the league only 3 points behind the leaders - San Miguel Falcons. With only 3 matches left in this league this season, lets hope the Lions can keep up the good work. Anyone interested in joining Quesada Bowls Club we welcome both new and experienced bowlers. We’re a friendly club with a mixture of competition, league and casual players. In addition to league matches and Club competitions we have our popular Saturday morning chicken drive which is open to visitors and we have free coaching for new members. players to beat 36 points, both by two. The rest of the top 20 had little to separate them. Given recent results, as well as today’s, it appears that SMGS’s adherence to the official handicap system, with amendments being made for each player for each round based on cards delivered, is working, and tightening up the fields. There will, of course, always remain exceptions, as Liz demonstrated. Returning to the President’s Trophy, the

The 2019 SAMM “Spring Bash” For the last 8 years the SAMM Social Committee has organised the annual “Spring Bash” at the Costa Narejos hotel which allows many members and their other halves to enjoy some fun social time together. The 2019 event started on May 14th with a sail to Sardine Island (Isla Perdiguera) in the Mar Menor for a picnic and swim. Eleven boats carrying 42 people struggled to get there in time for lunch due to the very light wind. The only boat to come from outside the Mar Menor “Lottie” had to motor the whole way from San Pedro Marina. A great time was had by all and everybody had a great sail back to their various bases as the wind came in strongly in the afternoon. Dinner at the hotel that evening was followed by a fun quiz

complied by Paul Shard. May 15th morning was taken up by the regular monthly SAMM meeting, followed by a free afternoon, then dinner and a barn dance at the hotel in the evening. A pity no photos were taken as some of the dancing was hilarious. The final day May 16th offered a free ‘do as you please’ morning, a Chinese banquet at the restaurant ‘Asia’ at 1.30, with ten pin bowling at the Ozone bowl to round off the celebrations. Many thanks go are due to Jill Chorley and her Social Committee colleagues for all their hard work to make this a success.
