CABO ROIG BUSINESS OWNERS WANT ILLEGAL TRADERS OUT B

usiness owners in Cabo Roig, particularly those on the area known as ‘The Strip’ are calling on the police and local councillors to help rid them of illegal traders who set up wares on the pavements and terraces harassing tourists and general making the area look inhospitable. The ‘Looky Looky’ men have become the scourge of the area and refuse to move even when asked to do so by the business owners. One owner said: “Last night there were 57 of them, with blankets on the streets and more of them walking around with handbags, hats and sunglasses for sale. We also believe that they could even be selling drugs and want the police to come and clear them from the area once and for all.” Continued on page 2

reopening.

However, the bar, restaurant and business owners claim that despite calling the police on several occasions nothing is ever done, in fact the police don’t even come to the area to see what the situation is and if they do turn a blind eye and don’t make any arrests. Another owner said: “These traders are illegal. If we call the police to report illegal selling, you would think that they would respond but they aren’t bothered.” Owners claim that if confronted the illegal traders get aggressive and have even physically attacked owners who try and remove them from their terraces. Legal owners believe that this is already affecting their businesses and will have even more impact on profits through July and August if families are put off and keep away. Many of the legal businesses in Cabo Roig, which, unlike the illegal traders, are contributing to the national economy, employing staff and paying their taxes, are concerned that if the problem is not dealt with as a matter of urgency there will be a lot of establishments closing at the end of the season and they won’t be

Hassle The Looky Looky men block the pavements and even hassle families and couples eating meals on terraces. Whilst other areas seem to be tackling the issue, the powers that be in Orihuela Costa are not. Pilar de la Horadada and Torrevieja have run specific clean-up campaigns over recent years dedicated to getting counterfeit goods off their streets and to curb the numbers of Looky Looky men. Unfortunately, this means these dodgy dealers are now plying their counterfeit goods on The Strip because they know they can get away with it. It seems that all of the Looky Looky men moved on from surrounding areas are now dealing knock-off trainers, tshirts and designer goods in Cabo Roig. Given the lack of action by the authorities local business owners have this week set up a Business Association for Cabo Roig and are demanding that something is done to address the despicable situation. They are calling for police and politicians to take back control of the area and restore it to the tourist hotspot and family friendly area it always has been. Mireille Toddington

Publication and distribution of election material investigated It is believed that public money could have been used to distribute thousands of leaflets around Torrevieja prior to the local elections on 26th May. The association that investigates illegal election practices had been asked to look into the matter by the PSOE. It is alleged that altogether around 5,000 leaflets were distributed, many of them in the car park of Torrevieja hospital. The leaflets asked people not to vote for the left leaning parties in the week prior to the election. They claimed that to do so would destroy the hospital and also prevent the N332 being widened. The local

election finally saw the parties of the left removed from office and the PP returned to local government in Torrevieja town hall where they had been for 30 years prior to the 2015 election. Leaflets are not allowed to be distributed in this way on private vehicles in car parks. In addition, it is believed that public money was used in their production and it is this that is currently being investigated. The leaflets were of high quality and questions had already been asked about how they could have been distributed so widely on waiting cars in the hospital car park without its own security becoming aware.

The leaflets urged people not to vote for Compromís/Los Verdes or the PSOE on the grounds that to do so would lead to longer hospital waiting lists and that these political parties would destroy the hospital. The hospital is semiprivatised with the concession coming up for renewal shortly. Other allegations made by the leaflet included the left parties blocking the widening of the N332 and preventing the opening of the disabled centre. The Electoral board of Orhuela (JEZ) has now sent the information to the anticorruption prosecutor of the Vega Baja. Suzanne O’Connell

BITE SIZE Man detained for NEWS: the attempted On Sunday 23rd June it was the annual bonfire celebrations that take place in different regions of Spain to celebrate the longest day of San Juan. People were invited to come to the beaches of La Mata, El Cura, Los Locos and Los Náufragos between 9pm and 2.30am to light their bonfires and celebrate the Midsummer evening. In order to avoid the issue of nails and other items remaining on the beaches after the bonfire, people were asked to use only the wood supplied by the town hall. Altogether it was advertised that 5,000 kilos of wood would be made available and that this could be collected from various points adjacent to the beaches. The early finish was requested in order to ensure that the proper cleaning of the beach could take place before people arrived the following morning. The ritual includes that people light bonfires and jump over them in order to rid themselves of the bad things that have happened the previous year. They then bathe in the sea to signify a fresh start.

New rubbish contract put on hold A tribunal has put on hold the process of contracting a new cleaning service for Torrevieja. The previous council had wanted to appoint a new provider of this

murder of his son

A well-known businessman from Torrevieja was arrested following a knife attack on his son. The police were called to the aparthotel that the man owns following a report of a serious incident on the morning of the 12th June. The 69 year old man had stabbed his 35 year old son following a family argument. The victim had tried to defend himself with his hands and had received a number of injuries to them. Eventually, he was seriously injured by a stab wound to his side and his father has since been arrested and charged with attempted murder. It is believed that the argument started over his father’s proposal to sell the aparthotel, an action that his ex-wife was opposed to. The crime took place in the building itself and the Guardia Civil were called to attend to a fight between two

men. When the police patrol arrived they found one man of 35 years old who was covered in blood and also had a number of stab wounds to his hands. In spite of his injuries the victim was still able to explain that the perpetrator was his own father. The injured man explained that there had been a heated argument and his father had taken a machete with which he had begun to attack his son. His son had used his hands to defend himself, trying to avoid the knife damaging any vital organs. Finally he took a stab wound to his side which caused him to haemorrhage as well as suffering many cuts to his hands. When the ambulance arrived it was recognised that the victim’s life was in danger and he had to be stabilised before being taken to hospital. In the meantime the father tried to leave the aparthotel but was prevented from doing so by the Local Police who arrested him. The knife used in the attack was not found on the victim’s father and it was suspected that he had hidden it on the premises. Following an extensive search the knife was found. The accused was moved to the Guardia Civil barracks in Torrevieja and faced the courts on Friday morning. He was kept in custody after his court appearance. Suzanne O’Connell

No sunbeds on the beaches

T

he 2019 tourist season has begun without Torrevieja’s beaches being equipped with their usual beach furniture. The usual sunbeds, umbrellas and even the raised vantage points for the life guards, aren’t yet in place. The life guards are already patrolling the beaches but they do not have the seating that makes it possible for them to see further out to sea. The contracts for the different services that equip the beaches appear to be in various stages. The contract for beach services is not likely to happen this year and there is still some way to go when it comes to the supply of the surveillance chairs for the lifeguards. Seven of their huts also

need repair work done on them to make them 2019 ready. The difficulty can be traced back to the intention in 2016 to buy new furniture. This did not arrive for the 2017 season but it was still possible to use the old furniture at this point. In 2018 the life guards brought in their own beach chairs to sit on. However the omission still does not seem to be remedied. The problem seems to lie with the split of the two services into two separate contracts. The previous council wished to issue one contract for the provision of the seating for the lifeguards and one for the repair of the beach huts that house their equipment. However, this award was frozen

by the auditor and a new attempt to make a contract was tried in November 2018. However, internal technical and administrative delays have prevented these contracts from being concluded. It is hard to see from outside of the town hall whether the six month delay in administration is down to lack of staffing, the length of the process itself or deliberate sabotage of change. Whatever the cause, it means that there are no contracts in place and no furniture or services on Torrevieja’s beaches. Fortunately the lack of provision does not extend to the first aid services and life guards. They are in place if sadly lacking the equipment they need to get the job done. The new PP government is now responsible for addressing the situation but have so far only commented that the contract was drawn up prior to them coming into office. The lack of sunbeds, umbrellas, jet skis, inflatables and other leisure services and equipment will be a setback for some of these beaches. They are popular activities in the summer time and those people who enjoy them may be forced to look for beaches elsewhere. Suzanne O’Connell

BITE SIZE We’re watching you! NEWS: Continued from page 3 service following concerns about the current provider, acciona, who has been responsible for cleaning Torrevieja for many years. There had been controversy over the original allocation of the contract which had been designated by the previous PP mayor, Pedro Ángel Hernández Mateo, who has since served a prison sentence for corruption. Now a central court has partially suspended the procedure for awarding the refuse collection service and cleaning contract.

Companies can still submit their tenders within the deadline at the end of this month. However, any decision cannot take place until the court decides on the appeal to stop the contracting process going through.

The Odyssey in Torrevieja The Calvario neighbourhood in Torrevieja had been setting the scene for the summer solstice bonfires with their own version of the Odyssey. The local artist Alfredo Guillén took the characters from the famous Greek poem and turned them into statues that eventually ended up on fire as part of the celebrations. It is an annual event in the area that includes a giant paella, DJ and dancing displays. The ‘cremá’ when the effigies are set on fire, might not be to the same size and standard as in Valencia, but it is certainly an interesting feature of the advent of summer in the town.

Headteacher doubles up as councillor The headteacher of Colegio Público Ciudad del Mar is to take up his role as PP councillor whilst also continuing on in the school. He will be the councillor for education and this has raised some eyebrows and concerns as to whether his decisions will be affected by the public office role he holds. The school, Ciudad del Mar, has a reputation for pursuing a more thematic type of education than the usual book focussed lessons that most children in Spain are used to. In the past few years it has featured on television programme and has been copied by other establishments keen to promote a different, more progressive, type of education. In his new role as councillor for education, Ricardo Recuero will have to take decisions that affect his own school too. Some feel that this could mean his decisions are compromised. Councillor Ricardo Continued on page 6

Almost anywhere in Torrevieja you could possibly be watched on camera. If they worked, that is.There are more than 200 CCTV cameras in the streets of the town with the intention of picking up what’s going on. However, many of these cameras have been out of order since they were first introduced in 2010 and the intention that they could monitor traffic offences and be used in court, has not really materialised. The network of cameras is intended to be used to control traffic, pick up where crimes are taking place and protect property. Lack of maintenance has meant that they have not been able to carry out this function to the extent that was expected. Now the system is receiving a

makeover and it is hoped that the cameras will be able to serve the prime purposeof making the streets safer. In November 2018 a new contract was awarded for maintenance of the security and traffic cameras and the renewal of the CCTV recording system. This is now in place and the cameras and network are being improved. Ninety per cent of the cameras are located in the centre of the town and along its main roads. Of the 200 cameras in total, 75 are linked to the passage of traffic and the remainder are in positions around the paseos in the town centre. The cameras are controlled from the headquarters of the local police who can watch what’s going on, on a number of linked screens. Suzanne O’Connell

Councillor Recuero has now sent out a letter to the parents of children at the school informing them of the decision to continue in his role as headteacher whilst also taking on other ‘professional challenges’. He is denying that there could be a conflict of interests and in meetings his school will be represented by the Head of Studies.

It was a wonderful night in a magical setting as the crème de la crème of the local restaurant trade gathered at Finca Rebate to celebrate the 2019 Costa Blanca People Culinary Awards. Awards were presented in a number of categories including Best Gourmet Restaurant, Best Coffee Shop and Best Chef. Each winner was invited to make an acceptance speech and many restaurateurs were overcome with emotion while thanking their hardworking staff and members of the public for making the award possible. The awards were followed by a fantastic disco provided by Simon Morton of Sunshine FM. In addition to the awards themselves, a raffle was held in aid of APANEE which raised €775.

Plans for La Vuelta Plans are being made for La Vuelta cycle race which is due to set off from Torrevieja on Saturday August 24th. This is a prestigious and important event that is watched across the world and it is vital that the town creates the right impression for those watching. It is planned that the start of the race will be from in front of the Dique de Levante, next to the Marina Salinas. The mayor, Eduardo Dolón, has chosen this as the site believing it will be a good vantage point for the Torrevieja coastline, including Paseo Juan Aparicio. This decision changes the location originally suggested by the previous local government. They had put forward the salt works as the back drop for the race and it was publicised that this decision led to a clean up of some of the rubbish that had accumulated in the area. Camino de Santiago Kathy Clements and her husband Mick have been living in Torrevieja since their retirement in 2010. The couple are not your average retirees. At age 66 and 75 respectively, they have just returned from the Camino de Santiago and far from being tired, they are already planning their next ‘camino’!

We spoke to Kathy and Mick just days after their return, having covered 145 kilometres in nine days. The pair have always loved walking and visited Galicia in 2014 with David’s Coachtrips. They were enamoured with the beauty of the region but at the time didn’t realise that they would soon return to Santiago de Compostela but this time on foot! The seed of an idea must have been planted because after being gym goers for two years, in a bid to stay active in retirement, the couple swapped the gym for long walks. Kathy explained, “Mick has severe back problems including sciatica and fused discs. The

walking was better for him than the gym and soon we found ourselves walking between 40 and 70 kilometres in a week!” The idea grew as it dawned on them that they could tackle the ‘French way’ of the Camino de Santiago – a route that requires pilgrims to complete the last 100 kilometres on foot

(or horseback) or the last 200 kilometres by bicycle. They began gathering information, joining Facebook groups like the ‘Slow Strollers’ and watching The Way, a movie about the Camino and began getting down to the serious business of training. Kathy also read the book “Boots to Bliss” by Claude Tranchant, a 64 year old woman who walked over 2500km alone from Vezelay in France to complete the Camino de Santiago. Kathy explained, “We walked every day with our full backpacks on, walking around La Mata natural park, doing between nine and 11 kilometres at a

time.” The couple may not have made it at all, had it not been for the medical care Kathy received at the clinic here in Spain. “I had a really bad foot injury in 2015,” she said, “So bad, there was talk of amputating my foot! I thought that would be the end of my life as I knew it - have always loved walking, loved the idea of being able to walk out my front door and just go wherever I wanted in the world with my own two feet. The thought of losing that ability, losing my independence, scared me to death.” Kathy continued, “I have done some scary things in my time – ziplined in Alaska, been on a sea plane, took a helicopter over Ayers Rock and much more – I have always felt the fear and done it anyway. The thought of not

being able to walk was scarier than all that put together so with some great care from the clinic here and some serious physiotherapy, I was able to

recover in about a year and importantly, to keep my foot and with guidelines from the doctor, began my ‘camino’ training.” The training was a challenge for Mick too. His back problems had meant that he had been prescribed a lot of pain medication over the years and had to spend time weaning himself off this before the serious training could begin. Mick said, “I didn’t really realise how dulled the medication had made me. I was on a combination of patches and tablets, and really it

was only when I began to come off them I realised how they numbed my senses as well as the pain.” Now, even after the ‘camino’, Mick is only on the bare minimum of pain meds for his back and hopes to keep it that way. But even with all the training, nothing really prepared Kathy and Mick for the experience. Kathy said, “We could definitely have done with more uphill training. There are no hills around here, so it was hard to train for this, but when we actually got there, the hills were steep and went on for miles, so that was a struggle.” Thankfully, the training paid off that Kathy and Mick sailed through the

camino and (with the help of a bit of Vaseline applied to the feet – a pilgrim ‘hack’) escaped without a blister in sight! They began each day’s walk at around 8.20am (they hadn’t planned on an exact departure time, it just happened that they naturally hit the road at around the same time each day) and walked until around 3pm. Despite the physical training, Kathy said that nothing prepared them from the actual journey. Every day, they relished in facing whatever was in front of them – even a couple of rainy days. Their journey was made even more magical by all the little experiences typical of the camino – the leaving behind of a ‘burden stone’, an impromptu sing song involving a backpacker’s guitar, the wonderful people they met along the way, the smells of the forest and eucalyptus along the way. Eventually, the road led them to the city, the cathedral and the tomb of St James where they joined a two hour queue to receive their certificates of completion. Their ‘treat’ on finishing their 9 day. 145km journey on foot was a cold beer and a slice of cake. Would they recommend the camino to others? Yes, absolutely – Kathy said, “Whether you are religious or not, it is a beautiful experience.”

Outstanding martial arts award for local man

L

a Florida man Paul Jackson, has been awarded Black Belt, 8th Dan in Jiu Jitsu at the tender age of 72 years old. Paul studied, practised and taught the martial art for more than 42 years in his native Blackburn and was delighted to receive news of his award and celebrate his achievement at the Emerald Isle where he is a regular customer. Paul said: “At last I have been recognised for the hard work and dedication to Jin Jitsu. The award came as a great but pleasant surprise.” Jin Jitsu is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on

grappling and ground fighting which evolved and developed its roots from Judo. It is founded on the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger, heavier opponent by using technique, leverage, and most notably, taking the fight to the ground, and then applying joint locks and chokeholds to defeat the opponent. Jui-Jitsu was a fighting style that was developed by Samurai warriors. It is considered to be one of the oldest Japanese martial arts and was developed out of

necessity during the Feudal period. The first records of an unarmed martial art that is similar to Jui-Jitsu is in the Chronicles of Japan. The current governing body requires a practitioner remain a black belt for a minimum of 31 years and as with many other martial arts, the black belt is the highest common belt within jiu-jitsu, denoting an expert level of technical and practical skill. Estimates of the time required to achieve the rank vary, but all holders of this rank have thousands of hours of experience. Dan means step or stage and refers to the rank or grade of a belt holder.

Sunny Spain Weather experts are forecasting a hotter-than-usual summer in Spain this year. The announcement came just as the most awaited season began with the recent Summer solstice. Officially, summer started in Spain at 17.54 mainland time exactly on Friday (21st June), the longest day of the year, and its temperatures will average around 0.5ºC higher than typical for the coming three months, with a 'real feel' of 0.6ºC more. To the west of the mainland, temperatures are expected to average 1ºC higher than, normal, according to the State meteorological agency, AEMET

– particularly in the Sprovinces of Cáceres and Badajoz (Extremadura), Huelva (Andalucía), León and Zamora (Castilla y León), and Ourense (Galicia). The first few days of summer 2019 will bring rain and a drop in temperatures in the northern half of the mainland, and see the mercury climb to at least 33ºC in the rest. As yet, forecasts cannot be accurately made about whether there will be more, or less, rainfall than usual this summer. AEMET's findings show that summer 2019 will be similar to that of 2018, which was also around 0.6ºC

hotter than usual, but not as hot as those of 2015 or 2017 – and certainly not as much as what the agency calls 'the famous summer of '03', when thermometers typically read 1.9ºC more than the average on record since 1981. This spring has had one of the warmest endings of late, and has been the sixth-driest this century with 15 percent less rainfall between March and May. These data means Spain is officially classified as being in 'meteorological drought', particularly in the eastern half and the northern third and 'some of' the Canary Islands, AEMET says.

GBP / EUR UPDATE

T

he progress of the Conservative Party leadership elections had a significant impact on the pound this week. All five of the pro‐Brexit candidates insisted that they would deliver the UK’s departure from the EU and four of them refused to rule out no deal and financial analysts now put the prospect of a no‐deal scenario at 4/1. After a series of televised debates and votes by MPs, the candidates have been whittled down to the favourite from the start, Boris Johnson, and Jeremy Hunt. Voting papers will now be sent to party members to make the final decision, which will be confirmed and announced in July. Meanwhile, the pound will be left in limbo with little progress on Brexit. There was a brief piece of good news when the British Chamber of Commerce (BCC) upgraded its growth forecast for 2019 from 1.2% to 1.3%. However, forecasts for the following two years were downgraded to 1.0% in 2020 and 1.2% for 2021. Inflation data came in on target

at 2% and the Bank of England (BoE) kept interest rates the same as expected. In contrast to the BCC, the BoE cut the growth forecast to zero, with the accompanying statement suggesting growth would be flat in the second half of the year. The key influence on the euro came after an announcement from European Central Bank (ECB) President Mario Draghi, who stated that "In the absence of improvement [to the economy], such that the sustained return of inflation to our aim is threatened, additional stimulus will be required.” The announcement appeared to take the market by surprise and the euro was marked down; it lost half a US cent and fell two thirds of a cent against sterling. US President Trump suggested the move was a deliberate attempt to weaken the euro, reiterating his frustration that the Federal Reserve to take similar action, but the news from the ECB was taken on reflection as a reasonable approach to support the euro amidst slowing economic growth across Europe.

Clairvoyance for charity On Wednesday 16th May an evening of clairvoyance was held at Bar Sacko’s in El Limonar in aid of the San JóseObrero Orphanage. Four mediums gave their time for free and the co-ordinators of the event would like to thank Belinda Bradley, Morag Bullock, Debbie Blevins and Sammy Fitzsimmons for their support. The evening began with the coordinators for fundraising events on

behalf of the orphanage, Ken and Lyn Adams, explaining more about it and the reasons why the money is so badly needed. The orphanage is home to children between the ages of 6 and 16 whose parent are unable to care for them. During the evening there was also opportunity to take part in a raffle and altogether €300 was raised. The cheque for this was then presented to the

Director of the Orphanage along with €200 vouchers for clothes which Belinda and Kevin donated. The orphanage is always in need of funds to support the children and young people who live and work there. Ken and Lyn would like to hear from any clubs or associations who think they might be able to help with their fundraising events. They can be contacted on 676 650 210. Suzanne O’Connell

Russian detained for money laundering A Russian fugitive has been arrested in Torrevieja following the release of an international warrant for her arrest. The Russian authorities had ordered the warrant with extradition orders in April due to charges of bribery, money laundering and the falsification of documents. The woman, who is 50 years old, is thought to have been living illegally in Torrevieja since 2017 when she fled Russia following the allegations that she had obtained illegally 32 million rubles, the equivalent of €543,000. The Russian authorities were in touch with the Alicante police authorities at the beginning of June to alert them to the possibility that the woman was now located in Torrevieja and to ask for their help. The offences took place between 2014 and 2017 when she was the member of a criminal organisation and was in receipt of the money through a number of fraudulent activities. However, before she could face the courts in Russia, she had fled the country and had moved to Spain where she was living without have legalised her situation. The woman was finally arrested on Monday afternoon 17th June. If found guilty she could face imprisonment of up to seven years. Suzanne O’Connell

Is your pension pot wisely invested? T

he favourite funds of people living off their investments in retirement have delivered handsomely over the past few years, new research shows. A saver who put a £100,000 pension pot into the best‐selling Fundsmith Equity in spring 2015 would be sitting on £165,100 now ‐ even if they had made withdrawals of £5,000 a year. The pension freedom reforms launched in 2015 mean a saver can now keep their pot invested and draw an income from it, rather than buy an annuity which provides a guaranteed income for life. The good news is that so far, pension freedom investors have benefited from strong stock market returns and even better active fund selection, in most cases generating a golden combination of income and capital preservation. Pension freedoms have seen many older people taking active control of their retirement investments for the first time, and many find choosing just one fund a tempting idea. There are plenty of investment firms touting funds to accommodate them. 'Multi‐asset' funds hold shares, bonds and other investments, are well diversified, and avoid anything too exotic that could suddenly skew performance. However, investing in just one fund contradicts an important tenet of investing, that you shouldn't put all your eggs in one basket. The key is to know how your money is invested and spread your risks as widely as possible. If you currently have a pension fund and are not sure how well it is performing or are thinking about taking control of your pension, then Seagate Wealth can help you make the right decision. We offer a range of pension solutions that offer our clients flexibility and control to ensure the best outcome for their pension.

Find your design style Modern, industrial, shabby chic….and the list goes on. A significant challenge many of us face is a lack of understanding to define personal interior design style... Modern and contemporary Modern and contemporary are two styles frequently used interchangeably. Contemporary is different from modern because it describes design based on the here and now.T he primary difference separating modern and contemporary design style is that modern is a strict interpretation of design that started in the 20th century. Contemporary on the other hand, is more fluid and can represent a sense of currency with less adherence to one particular style. Minimalist The minimalist concept takes notions of modern design and simplifies them further. Colour palettes are neutral and airy; furnishings are simple and streamlined, and nothing is excessive or flamboyant in accessories or décor. Industrial Industrial style draws inspiration from a warehouse or an urban loft. There’s a sense of unfinished rawness in many of the elements, and it’s not uncommon to see exposed brick, ductwork and wood. Think high ceilings, old timber and dangling metal light fixtures with sparse functional furniture. There may possibly be one or two pieces of abstract art or photography to add a dash of colour to

an otherwise neutral colour scheme derived from the primary materials of wood and metals. Scandinavian Scandinavian design pays homage to the simplicity of life demonstrated in Nordic countries. Scandinavian furniture design often feels like a work of art, although it is simple and understated. There’s

functionality in the furniture along with some interesting lines, many of which have a sculptural influence. Other common characteristics include all-white colour palettes and the incorporation of natural elements like form-pressed wood, bright plastics, and enamelled aluminium, steel and wide plank flooring. If there are pops of colour it often comes from the use of art, natural fibre throws or furs, or a single piece of furniture. Traditional Traditional design style offers classic details, sumptuous furnishings, and an

abundance of accessories. It is rooted in European sensibilities. Traditional homes often feature dark, finished wood, rich colour palettes, and a variety of textures and curved lines. Furnishings have elaborate and ornate details and fabrics, like velvet, silk and brocade, which may include a variety of patterns and textures. Bohemian Bohemian is a popular style for home design and fashion. It reflects a carefree lifestyle with little rules, except to follow your hearts desire. Bohemian homes may include vintage furniture and light fixtures, globally inspired textiles and rugs, displays of collections, and items found in widely varied sources including flea markets and during one’s travels. It’s not uncommon to spot floor pillows and comfortable seating spaces when incorporating the bohemian style. This eclectic style can incorporate an ultra-glam chandelier paired with a well-worn rug and a mid-century chair. Rustic Rustic design is drawn from natural inspiration, using raw and often unfinished elements including wood and stone. Rustic design may incorporate accessories from the outdoors with warmth emulating from the design and architectural details that may include features like vaulted ceilings adorned with wood beams or reclaimed wood floors. Many designs now integrate rustic design with more modern furnishings and accessories.

She's a shopaholic

Worried about getting old

My wife has emotional problems. She felt un-loved by her parents, who sent her to boarding school while they worked away. Her parents are no longer alive. My wife is very negative about things, and turns to shopping constantly to make her feel better. She is happy for a short time afterwards, and then is down in the dumps again. I have told her I think she has a problem. It's costing us a fortune. I have suggested Therapy, but she says talking about it, won't change her past.

I am 15, and I am afraid of getting old. Everyone says how pretty I am, and I have been told that I could be a model. However, there is only a short time that I can do this type of work before I am too old. I look at members of my family who are growing old and ageing. I don't want that to happen to me. It's all I can think about.

Therapy won't change what's gone on in your wife's past, but talking about it will help her to accept what happened. In time she will feel better, and will hopefully be able to move on. She obviously feels she was let down by her parents, and this is understandable. The compulsion to shop continually is her way of comforting herself, but if not addressed, it can become an addiction. You can't fix the inside, with the outside. She would greatly benefit by seeing a Therapist, and your GP can help with this.

I am afraid there is no alternative to growing older and ageing. We have to accept that this is what happens to us all. Keep in mind that a lot of unfortunate people die young, and don't even get the chance to have an interesting life and grow old. You are lucky, you are young and healthy and have your whole life ahead of you, so make the most of it and try and feel grateful. A career in modelling would be wonderful. Not many young girls get the opportunity. Have some fun, and don't dwell on the things you cannot change.

Bank of Spain improves economic growth outlook

T

he Bank of Spain has improved its 2019 growth outlook for the Spanish economy, raising it to 2.4 percent from the 2.2 percent it predicted in March. The reason for this uptick is the fact that the economy has demonstrated “greater strength than anticipated,” said Óscar Arce, the Bank of Spain’s head of research, at a news conference. From now on the pace of growth will gradually slow down, according to the supervisor, which also warned about the risks to the job market from the minimum wage hike and from outside factors that could hurt the economy, including growing protectionism, Brexit, and doubts about the Chinese economy. The Bank of Spain has calculated that the 22.3 percent minimum wage increase introduced by the government of Pedro Sánchez could result in the loss of around 125,000 jobs. Arce said that the supervisor, which has faced government criticism over this estimate, used a calculation method backed by a prestigious academic publication to arrive at the number. But Arce admitted that there is no certainty because calculations were made by extrapolating 2017 figures. “We don’t have a crystal ball,” he said.

Arce also conceded that employment figures have been better than expected, but said that the Spanish economy is affected by many other factors besides wages. Despite a global slowdown, the Spanish economy has outperformed expectations on the back of public spending and strong internal demand. During the second half of the year, the supervisor expects slower growth due to fewer exports and

quarters, the export markets will recover to some degree.” But “a high degree of global uncertainty” will eventually lead to lower household consumption and lower investment. “As a result, it is expected that after the 2.6 percent figure posted in 2018, GDP growth will slow down to 2.4 percent in 2019, 1.9 percent in 2020 and 1.7 percent in 2021.” The supervisor also warns that even though the public deficit is shrinking thanks to economic

the price of oil. But financing costs will shrink, supporting continued growth. The Bank of Spain expects the current expansionary period to extend to 2021 thanks to sustained competitiveness, the private sector and a favourable monetary policy. And “in the absence of new adverse developments in the coming

growth, the structural deficit – corrected for fluctuations and one-off measures – will remain “at very high levels.” This week, Brussels announced it plans to take Spain out of the Excessive Deficit Procedure after a decade in the program, but warned that it will keep an eye on the evolution of its public debt and deficit levels.

Brazilian mother of five is 1,000th gender violence victim in Spain Ana Lucía da Silva is officially the thousandth woman to be killed in a domestic violence case in Spain. The central government delegation in the southern Spanish region of Andalusia confirmed that Da Silva, who died last Friday, has joined the long and tragic list of women who have been murdered by their partners or former partners since 2003, when official records began. Her body was found on 14th June next to that of her partner, Salvador Ramírez, by fire-fighters who entered their home in the Valdeolleros neighbourhood in Córdoba after being alerted to a fire. When officers arrived minutes later, they found an “unusual” situation for a fire, according to police sources. From that moment on, the theory that Ramírez had killed his partner began to gain ground. It was finally confirmed after the court in charge of the case announced it would be tried in a gender-violence court. Da Silva was allegedly killed by Ramírez, 45, who already had a murder conviction for killing another partner. In 2002, he confessed to murdering his then-wife, Amanda del Carmen Cabeza, in Algeciras (Cádiz), when he was 27 and she was 22 years old. They were the parents of three small children and were separating. According to reports of the crime, the wife was regularly abused. Her body was found in the bathtub with signs of strangulation. He was sentenced to 17 years in prison and set to be released in 2020. But

according to sources in the government sub-delegation, he was granted Grade 3 prison status – the least restrictive – in October 2017, and conditional release in February 2018. In prison, he behaved so well he was awarded a number benefits. He even signed up to a program aimed at combating gender violence. On 21st December, 2017, the prison board recommended to a judge that Ramírez be given conditional release for a period of two years, adding a favourable report on his ability to reintegrate into society. On 23rd January, 2018, the Córdoba judge granted him conditional release and set out a series of rules, including the condition that he must live in a shelter run by the Catholic NGO Cáritas and “maintain until the end of the sentence the good behaviour and conduct that have determined the individually established favourable prospect of social integration.” Ana Lucía da Silva arrived in Córdoba from Brazil last spring, according to her sister, Priscila da Silva. She left four children behind but came to Spain with one daughter, Raquel, aged 16. Raquel was at school when her mother was allegedly murdered, and was reportedly devastated when she was told. Soon after receiving the news, she went to the home with her aunt. Da Silva had been in a relationship with Ramírez since the end of last year, and they lived together in the working-

class neighbourhood of Valdeolleros. Fire-fighters were called to the home after neighbours spotted smoke coming out of a window at around 11am on Friday. By the afternoon, smoke stains were still visible on the balcony, although the fire only affected one bedroom. The door remains sealed by police. Da Silva had tried to start a new life in Córdoba. In an effort to adapt to her new country, she began attending Spanish classes at the beginning of this year. Ramírez went with her to her first class. “She was reserved, but always had a smile,” says one classmate. She went to classes twice a week and never missed a lesson. But she was forced to stop going two months later after finding work as a domestic helper. And although a local NGO had helped her to create a program to help her integrate into society and the workforce, Da Silva had found the job on her own. According to Da Silva’s fellow church members, “she sometimes worked in hotels, other times cleaning homes or caring for elderly people.” Every Sunday morning, Da Silva went to an evangelical church in the Santa Rosa neighbourhood, popularly known as El Laurel. Ramírez went with her on several occasions. “She introduced him. She wanted him to also follow her religion, but he didn’t speak a lot,” the same sources say, adding that Da Silva was a “very good and trusting” person. Perhaps for this

reason, despite knowing about his murder conviction, she had no misgivings about him living with her and her daughter – something the people around her warned against. “She was a survivor, she fought to get ahead in complicated circumstances,” say the church members, who add the decision to share a flat with Ramírez was about sharing expenses, given that both were struggling financially. Ramírez asked for permission to leave the Cáritas shelter and the public prosecution agreed. He had been working as a dishwasher in a restaurant

for a year, thanks to a local NGO that helps people at risk of social exclusion. His workmates said Ramírez had “ideal” behaviour, and found it strange that he didn’t turn up to his shift on Friday at 10am. However, they soon learned what had happened. In the neighbourhood where they lived, not a lot was known about the couple. “We saw them sometimes, but not a lot,” say staff from the establishments next door to their flat. Da Silva’s family is hoping to launch a GoFundMe campaign to raise €5,700 to repatriate her body to Brazil.

Buying in Spain? 5 tips for a smooth completion day Rebecca Serwotka

Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward – 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today! Featured on Best Buy Spain – Property TV – Sky Channel 189.

There’s no difference between how much or how little you’re spending to buy your home in Spain, the completion day will be the same for everyone, whether you’re Antonio Banderas, or Mr. & Mrs. Joe Soap. When you’re ready to complete your purchase, everyone will be anxious and excited about the day ahead, so here are 5 tips to make sure your completion day goes smoothly:

1. Dress for the occasion. This means, don’t turn up in beachwear! You wouldn’t visit a Lawyer in your own country wearing skimpy shorts, bare chest and in flip flops, so don’t do it here either. You’re not expected to be wearing a shirt and tie, but smart casual will show the

Notary, (these professional people authorize and sign the Title Deeds), the respect he or she deserves, and I can assure you, the respect will be mutual. 2. Have your payments ready. You will have already been instructed how payment is to be made, so if you need to collect any Bankers Drafts from your bank, be there early. 3. Be prompt. Wherever you’ve been instructed to be, make sure you’re there in plenty of time. Allow yourself time to park the car. This time of year, there’s more traffic around, which means you may need to find a parking space a little further away than you’d like. 4. I.D.’s. Make sure you take your passport for identification, and residence paper (if applicable) or N.I.E. certificate. 5. Be patient. The Notary’s office can be very busy, and even if you arrive on time, you can experience what seems like an exaggerated wait time. Don’t get stressed about it. That will achieve nothing, and it definitely won’t speed up the process. Take a breather, and go with the flow. The phrase “mañana” doesn’t exist for nothing! Once you’ve signed your Title Deeds (Escritura) and handed over your payment, you’ll receive the keys to your new home in Spain. And now all that’s left to do is, start creating many happy memories! Buying? Enjoy the journey! On the hunt to buy your home in Spain? Head to www.QuesadaDeals.com for a list of the best area deals! See our advert in the centre pages of this newspaper.

Bingeworthy Box Sets Vinyl

The music scene in 1970s New York is still awash in sex and drugs, but rock 'n' roll is giving way to an era of punk, disco and hip-hop. Desperately trying to navigate the changing landscape is American Century Records founder and president Richie Finestra, whose passion for music and discovering talent has gone by the wayside. With American Century on the verge of being sold, a life-altering event rekindles Finestra's professional fire, but it may leave his personal life in ruins. Martin Scorsese, Mick Jagger and Terence Winter are among the creators of the hourlong drama series, which stars Bobby Cannavale (HBO's "Boardwalk Empire") as Finestra.

Boardwalk Empire

Atlantic City at the dawn of Prohibition is a place where the rules don't apply. And the man who runs things -- legally and otherwise -- is the town's treasurer, Enoch "Nucky" Thompson, who is equal parts politician and gangster. Side by side with his brother Elias, Atlantic City's sheriff, and a crew of ward bosses and local tough guys, Nucky gains a reputation as the man to see for illegal alcohol. He does business with all the top gangsters -- Al Capone, Lucky Luciano, "Big Jim" Colosimo -- and he does it well ... until a former protĂŠgĂŠ takes matters into his own hands, setting the Feds on Nucky's tail.

Quirónsalud participates in the Euromelanoma Campaign, providing Free Examinations Thanks to early diagnosis, most skin cancer cases can be curable Valencian Community, June 17, 2019. Hospital Quirónsalud Valencia and Centro Médico Quirónsalud Alicante are collaborating with the Euromelanoma Campaign, providing free mole examinations from June 25 to 28 in Valencia, and June 26 to 28 in Alicante. Those interested in undergoing these examinations must request a prior appointment at 960 019 852 in the case of the Valencia hospital centre, and on the website www.euromelanoma.org or at 915434535in the case of Centro Médico de Alicante. Every year, 5 thousand new cases of melanoma are diagnosed in Spain, together with 75 thousand non-melanoma skin cancer cases. “Melanoma is the skin cancer with the worst prognosis. However, if it is detected early, there is an 80% probability of curing it,” assures Doctor José María Ricart, Head ofthe Dermatology Service at Quirónsalud Valenciaand the Instituto Médico Ricart, “additionally,” he adds, “complete information about melanoma is the most important prevention measure, since anticipating diagnosis reduced the possibility of it becoming mortal by almost 90%.” The dermatologist insists on the importance of having annual check-ups, since estimates show that four out of every ten Spaniards will get skin cancer at some point in their lives. The symptoms presented by this type of skin cancer appear as an alteration in a pigmented lesion, which experiences a change in size, colour or shape. As el Doctor

José Carlos Pascual, Coordinator of the Dermatology Service at Centro Médico de Quirónsalud Alicanteexplains, “we use the “ABCDE” rule to detect possible skin cancer: A is a reference to asymmetry of the mole, B stands for irregular borders, C means several colours in the same lesion, D is a diameter above 6 mm, and E, perhaps the most relevant characteristic, evolution, in other words, the presence of changes in the mole over the course of weeks or months.” Doctor Pascual recommends performing self-examinations periodically, and in case of any doubts, consulting a specialist. The physical examination performed by specialist physicians is currently the best mechanism for early detection of melanoma. As Doctor Ricart states, “a dermatologist has tools that increase diagnostic precision, such as dermatoscopy, which allows us to observe the microscopic structures of moles. In addition, in patients with multiple atypical moles, it is essential to have body photographs, due to which following up in the long term is essential, as it enables very close and careful control of the moles each person presents.” The specialists at Quirónsalud recommend avoiding sun exposure during the hours of highest radiation, and alert about the consequences of sunburns, “because skin may forgive, but it doesn’t forget.” This is why they recommend always using an adequate sunscreen for each skin type, re-applying it every two or three hours, drinking lots of water, and wearing certified sunglasses and adequate clothing. The sun is the main risk factor for developing the disease. Doctor Pascual explains that

having suffered more than three sunburns during childhood multiples the risk of melanoma appearing.” People with multiple moles or with a family history of melanoma are also at greater risk. Spanish dermatologists have participated in this European campaign for the detection and awareness of skin cancer since the year 2000. At a European level, at least 33 countries intervene in Euromelanoma, and so far, over 450,000 free examinations have been provided.

High Effectiveness of Mohs’ Surgery in the Treatment of Skin Cancer The Dermatology Service at Hospital Quirónsalud Valencia is part of the small number of centres that remove skin tumours using Mohs’ Micrographic Surgery, which allows for an immediate examination of the scope of the lesion. “For the performance of this surgical technique,” explains Doctor Ricart, “the dermatologist extracts the tumour tissue and reconstructs the area; the pathologist analyses it through the microscope in order to identify all the cancer’s roots, and detect possible residual tumours that require further resection.” This surgery achieves a high percentage of healing, while also avoiding the destruction of healthy tissue. Interest rate rise postponed The European Central Bank's (BCE's) decision to postpone interest rate increases across the board means mortgages and credit in general in Spain and other common currency countries are likely to remain stable for some time. According to the BCE's board of governors during a recent meeting in the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius, interest charged to high-street banks across the Eurozone for excess of reserves would remain at its current 0.4 percent until at least the middle of 2020. This is the second time since 2011 that the BCE has postponed an interest rate rise, having previously said that they would start to climb by summer 2019 or, at the latest, the end of this year. Although the interest charge on excess of reserves is different from the Euribor, or consumer interest across the Eurozone charged on mortgages, credit cards, for late payment, and other general finance, the decision announced by the BCE is part of a general policy of keeping rates down in order to encourage the flow of funding throughout bloc of countries which use the euro. The BCE wants to aim for a rate of inflation of about or just

below 2 percent, but no higher, and despite rock-bottom interest, it was still only at 1.2 percent in May and 1.7 percent in April. Inflation in the Eurozone calculated without taking into account the rising prices of fuel, alcohol, cigarettes and food came in at 0.8 percent for May, well below the 1.3 percent for April. Containing inflation and encouraging investment is the BCE's main aim, which it reaffirmed during the meeting in Lithuania – so it does not appear that the Euribor will be on the rise until at least the middle of next year either, although this was not explicitly stated. Having sat at around the 2.5 percent mark from 2002 to 2006, the Euribor reached an historic high of 5.45 percent in September 2008, coinciding with the financial crisis, the collapse of Spain's housing market and recession and unemployment across the entire European Union, which meant mortgage payments spiralled out of control and led to countless repossessions. But it dropped sharply in 2011, fell below 1% in 2013 and has been in negative figures since February 2016 – in fact, May closed with a Euribor

interest rate of -0.175 percent. This is in spite of fears in early 2017 that it could rise, forcing homeowners to tighten their belts.

Unemployment in the Eurozone Also at the meeting, the governors revealed that unemployment as at the end of April – the last full month for which figures are available – had fallen to 7.6 percent in the Eurozone, its lowest since 2008, and to 6.4 percent in the European Union, its lowest since the year 2000 when Eurostat started compiling figures for the bloc as a whole. Unemployment in Spain, based upon figures at the end of the first quarter – the most recent available – was 14.7 percent, or 3.35 million registered as jobseekers. This is a vast improvement on figures during the financial crisis – in autumn 2012, it peaked at 27.2 percent, rising above 25 percent for the first time in history, with 6.2 million registered as unemployed. Unemployment in Spain currently sits at around the same level as in 1981, which was the lowest it would be for the rest of the 20th century, and about the same as in the year 2000.

Kombucha UK pub chain JD Wetherspoon has launched kombucha nationwide and in two flavours cherry plum and ginger lemon. Despite the fact that it is regularly touted as a drink with plenty of health properties, the fermented tea drink still isn’t widely known in the UK or across Europe. Here’s everything about kombucha - from how it’s made to possible side effects.

What is kombucha? Kombucha is a soft, slightly fizzy drink that is made with a sweet tea base and is fermented. The process of making kombucha involves a specific culture known as a ‘scoby’. Scoby stands for “symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeasts”. The bacteria and yeasts are what are converted into sugar and gives the drink its distinctive sour taste. kombucha is made using: Sugar, Cold filtered water, Black/green tea and Scoby, which can be purchased online or taken from an existing batch

of kombucha. The tea and sugar are steeped in boiling water. Once this mixture has cooled, the scoby is added. The kombucha is then covered and left to ferment for up to a week. It is then transferred into an airtight container with some extra sugar and left alone for a few more days. The longer the kombucha is left for, the fizzier it will be. Flavourings like spices and fruit can be added at this point as well. Rich in beneficial probiotics and antioxidants, the health benefits of kombucha have been a huge selling point of the fermented drink. The Institute of Health Sciences states that 80 per cent of our immune system is located within the gut. The healthy bacteria in kombucha colonises our gut.

According to Healthline, kombucha has been scientifically proven to have health benefits. These include: - Being a source of probiotics - A source of antioxidants - Having the ability to kill bad bacteria - Potentially reducing heart disease - Helping manage type two diabetes - Possibly having cancer preventing properties Due to the fermentation process of making kombucha, it contains a small amount of alcohol. While the level of alcohol is generally incredibly small, pregnant women would be best to avoid the drink. Diabetics should also be aware of the level of sugar that’s left over, even after fermentation.

Falafel, the chickpea treat Falafel is the crispy street food staple enjoyed by millions around the globe –that was honoured last Tuesday with its very own Google Doodle. More than just a vegetarian lunchtime snack, the humble falafel defies dietary requirements because it's loved by meat-eaters and vegans alike thanks to its flavourful chickpea filling. It’s versatile too, and can be consumed in anything from a hummus-filled pitta bread wrap to a fresh and zesty salad. Recipes vary, but the traditional falafel is made by blending chickpeas with herbs and spices, rolling the mixture into small balls and deep frying them. It sounds like a simple process.

But the falafel’s origins are slightly more contentious. While several regions claim the delicacy as their own, it’s almost impossible to trace who exactly invented it, as variations have been eaten around the world for centuries. It’s traditionally viewed as a Middle Eastern dish and is a common sight in restaurants and at market stalls across the Levant – Israel even has its own song to homage its love of falafel, titled “And we have falafel”. It’s thought that the first people to start eating falafel in pita bread were Yemeni Jews, but the dish has surged in popularity across the world along with the rise of vegetarianism.

In North America, falafel could only be found in specific Arabic or Jewish neighbourhoods and eateries up until around 1970. Now, it’s widely available across the US in mainstream restaurants and is topped with everything from Yemeni hot sauce to Iraqi fried aubergine. Falafel also appeals to healthconscious diners thanks to its high protein and complex carbohydrate content. In 2012, the world’s largest falafel was created in a kitchen at the Landmark Hotel in Amman, Jordan. It weighed 74.8 kilograms (164.8 pounds) and had a height of 152 centimetres (59.8 inches). It took 25 minutes to fry.

Children allowed to drink alcohol Fish and Chips off 'more likely to binge-drink' the menu Many modern parents pride themselves on being relaxed about letting their children have a drink. But that first sip of beer during a family barbecue, or thimbleful of champagne on New Year’s Eve may not be as harmless as it seems. A scientific review has found parents happy for their children to try alcohol are more likely to see them become drinkers. The children of permissive parents are more likely to binge-drink and to consume alcohol frequently, based on 29 studies in children aged seven to 18 years of age. Researchers led by the University of Cambridge say many parents believe it is the ‘social norm’ to allow even young children to try alcohol, in a bid to give them independence. But in giving in, often to avoid conflict, they may inadvertently be encouraging drinking. The review of almost 16,500 children and more than 15,000 parents looked at parents’ attitudes on their children ‘sipping’ alcohol, and whether they approved of children drinking or found it acceptable. The children of the most lenient parents were 58 per cent more likely to report having got drunk, and 52 per cent more likely to drink frequently. Mariliis Tael-Oeren, who led the research, said: “There are many myths related to children’s alcohol use, such as the old “forbidden fruit” idea that if alcohol is forbidden by parents it becomes much more appealing. “Because of this, parents might allow

children alcohol at a dinner party, at New Year’s Eve or their own birthday party if they turn 13 or 14. “It is easy to see why parents think their

children are not that far from adulthood, or that it is fine to give them a bit because everybody else is doing it. “But one of the reasons why this might lead to greater alcohol use in children is that it sends mixed messages - without them alcohol is not allowed, but with them it is fine. It is much better to have a clear message for children.” Among the research looked at for the review was a US study of more than 400 children which asked mothers how they felt about their child tasting or sipping alcohol. The study, by the University of Pittsburgh, found 10-year-olds were 18 per ¡cent more likely to drink alcohol if their mother had lenient views about it. Parents who believed drinking was acceptable early in childhood had

children 54 per cent more likely to drink as teenagers, according to another study of more than 1,200 12-year-olds from the University at Buffalo last year. Taking all the studies together, the children of parents who were less worried about alcohol were 45 per cent more likely to try alcohol, according to the review co-authored with the University of East Anglia and published in the journal Addiction. When figures were last available, in 2016, one in 10 English pupils aged 11 to 15 had drunk alcohol in the last week, consuming six units on average, which is the equivalent of two-and-a-half pints of low-strength beer. Research suggests children aged four start to understand that alcohol is drunk in specific contexts and is usually just for adults. Mrs Tael-Oeren, from the Behavioural Science Group at the University of Cambridge, said: “Ideally alcohol use should be initiated when the brain is fully developed, i.e. around the age of 25. And although it might sound a bit unrealistic, especially when taking into account alcohol use rates, it is something to think about. “Alcohol use can be problematic, particularly among young people. It’s important that parents and children understand the short and long-term consequences of drinking. “If parents don’t want their children to drink, then our study suggests they need to be clear about the message they give out.”

Fish and chips could be off the menu permanently due to global warming, a study has warned. Scientists say larger marine species including cod and haddock - face being wiped out as rising temperatures reduce oxygen in the oceans. The findings were based on an analysis of different sized crustaceans found in abundance in the Antarctic. When the gas in the water they were in was cut they got smaller - supporting the theory bigger sea creatures are more vulnerable to climate change. Previous studies have suggested portions of the British pub classic will be up to a fifth smaller by 2050. Study coauthor Dr Simon Morley, an ecophysiologist with the British Antarctic Survey, said: 'Marine animals thrive in the Southern Ocean but life in these freezing waters has led to the evolution of many distinct characteristics. These "strategies", which allow animals to survive in the cold, are expected to make many Antarctic marine invertebrates and fish vulnerable to the impact of climate change. 'Understanding these impacts will not only help us to predict the fate of marine biodiversity at the poles but will also teach us much about the mechanisms that will determine the survival of species across the world's oceans.' The study suggests failure to control greenhouse gas emissions will have a greater impact on marine ecosystems than previously feared. Co-author Professor John Spicer, a marine zoologist at the University of

Plymouth, has spent more than 30 years examining the effect of climate change on ocean organisms. He said: 'Over the last 50 years, the oxygen in our oceans has decreased by around two to five per cent and this is already having an effect on species' ability to function. Unless they adapt, many larger marine invertebrates will either shrink in size or face extinction, which would have a profoundly negative impact on the ecosystems of which they are a part. This is obviously a major cause for concern.' Professor Spicer said it was one of the most important changes occurring in an ocean becoming increasingly modified by human activities - making the water warmer.

Jose Lladro dies aged 91 Spain argues over Co-founder of one of the world's largest names in porcelain figurine collectibles, José Lladró, has passed away aged 91, meaning his two daughters now own his 15 percent share of the company. It was set up by the three Lladró

each – decided to distribute their shares to their children. The late Juan Lladró and his four daughters held 70 percent of the firm, whilst the remaining 30 percent was split equally between José and his two daughters and Vicente and his three children.

brothers – Juan, who died in December 2017; José, and Vicente, who is still living - in 1953. They created the Lladró brand in their tiny, humble workshop in their native village of Almàssera, Valencia province, but within less than a decade, their beautiful, intricate and delicate figurines were being sold in bespoke shops and concessions, and in collections in independent boutiques, on all five continents. By then, the company had set up its head office and factory in the Valencia-province town of Tavernes Blanques, where it remains today. In 2003, the brothers – who owned a third of the company

Vicente is now the only surviving original founder, and the company is in the hands of its second generation. Lladró figurines are soughtafter worldwide, highly-treasured, and even the cheapest and most basic come with a three-figure price tag, given that they are all made entirely by hand. Among the animal figurines, the cheapest is a basic white matt swan for €85, but a limited-edition koi carp with aquatic flowers comes in at €3,800. Angels, scenic arts – ballerinas, musicians, jugglers, contortionists, musical instruments and even a lifelike bust of Marilyn Monroe for €1,250

– sports, including equestrian, and flamenco dancers, trades including doctors, nurses, sailors and graduates, fantasy and legends including mermaids, dragons and fairytale characters, men, women, children, parents with babies, parents with children, families, love themes, religious themes including Indian gods, Buddha and the Three Wise Men, cultures and traditions including Venetian gondoliers, Ancient Egypt, African and oriental figures, vases, and Mahatma Gandhi are among the vast range of statuettes and detailed miniature scenes which average in price from around €200 to €600, with the finer ones reaching between €8,000 and €10,000. The biggest and most expensive is a Venice carnival scene, costing more than a house at €185,000. But as it is 1.44 metres wide and 85 centimetres high with more than 100 figures and 450 pieces in it, created by 35 artists who spent 22,000 hours on it, the price may be unsurprising. Home accessories, light fittings, Disney characters, jewellery and even perfume are also created in Tavernes Blanques and retailed worldwide. Delivery anywhere within Spain is free for orders of €200 or more, which covers the vast majority of Lladró's wares. Guided tours around the Tavernes Blanques factory – the only Lladró creation centre in the world – are hugely popular with international visitors.

‘Cooperation government’ Nearly two months after a general election that gave a victory to the Socialist Party (PSOE) but delivered a fractured parliament, acting Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has begun working in earnest toward a deal that will allow him to form a government. Sánchez met recently with Pablo Iglesias, head of the antiausterity Podemos party, to discuss the exact nature of the “government of cooperation” that both leaders recently announced. This meeting, first reported by eldiario.es, did not go well, according to sources familiar with the situation. The main stumbling block is the fact that Iglesias wants Cabinet positions that will reflect his party’s weight relative to the PSOE in parliament (42 seats versus 123), whereas Sánchez has rejected this idea. Instead, the PSOE leader, who originally wanted to lead a minority government with support from the Unidas Podemos group, is now willing to offer Iglesias midlevel government positions, but not ministerial portfolios. Additionally, Sánchez is offering to make Podemos his party’s preferential partner and for both groups to sign a joint program ahead of his own investiture bid in Congress. Both parties have announced that they had agreed on a

“government of cooperation” to replace the coalition government initially sought by Podemos, which came in fourth at the 28th April election after the PSOE, the Popular Party (66 seats) and Ciudadanos (57 seats). For Iglesias, a coalition government and a cooperation government are essentially the same: a joint executive where Podemos would hold a third of the Cabinet positions, reflecting its own weight relative to the PSOE inside Congress: 42 to 123. But for Sánchez, it means making Podemos its priority partner for key decisions, drafting an investiture deal that would influence the political agenda throughout Sánchez’s term in

office, and offering Podemos midlevel positions in his administration. So far, Iglesias has said very clearly that he will accept nothing short of ministerial posts for his party. In the meantime, the PSOE is pressuring the PP and Ciudadanos to at least abstain at the investiture vote where Sánchez will seek to be officially appointed as the prime minister of Spain. There is no date yet for this vote, although Socialist sources are talking about the first or second week of July. If Sánchez were to fail in his bid to form a government, and no other successful candidate stepped up, Spaniards would be facing a fresh general.

Adele loses more The acid on than a stone after everyone’s lips! taking up Pilates She has been spicing up her life since she split from her husband of three years Simon Konecki. And Adele's Reformer Pilates class has reportedly given her a new lease of life as she has lost more than a stone in weight after attending the workout with pal Ayda Field. The Hello hitmaker, 31, displayed her slimmed-down figure in a black ensemble when she partied with her childhood favourites The Spice Girls over the weekend. A source told said 'Adele has been out enjoying herself and she sees that as her priority at the moment, along with being a mum to Angelo. 'She has been loving her new workout regime and it really works for her. 'It’s a bonus that she has shifted some weight. Her mates are glad she’s letting loose and there’s nothing but good feelings towards her. She’s got a new lease of life.' The Reformer Pilates class helps improve posture, flexibility and balance as well as a great

weight loss strategy. And it's all the rave with the Alist celebs including the likes of Jennifer Aniston, Kate Winslet and Madonna. Adele has been making some changes since her split from her husband of three years Simon. It was reported that Adele and Simon had been 'living separate lives for years' after news of their shock split emerged in April. Adele, who met the charity entrepreneur in 2011 and married him in secret in 2016, said the pair were committed to raising their son Angelo, six, together 'lovingly'. The singer's representatives said: 'Adele and her partner have

separated. They are committed to raising their son together lovingly. As always they ask for privacy.' Her spokespeople added the star would be making no further comment on the matter. Adele and Simon tied the knot sometime in 2016, though they managed to keep the secret wedding under wraps until the following year. The singer confirmed the union on-stage as she picked up a Best Album Award at the 2017 Grammys. During an emotional acceptance speech, she said: 'I'm married! My husband, my son, you're the only reason I do it.'

Hyaluronic Acid. To the less beauty savvy, it may sound like something you don't want to put anywhere near your face, but, what if we told you that it actually holds the key to smooth, flawless and hydrated skin? In fact, our own skin cells actually produce Hyaluronic Acid naturally in a bid to maintain moisture levels. But, thanks to pesky ageing and environmental aggressors, to name just a few things flung at our faces on a daily basis, those levels tend to take a bit of a dip. Cue sensitivity, dullness, fine lines and uneven tone and texture. Need we go on? HA (hyaluronic acid) is critical in maintaining skin hydration, although it can be degraded by free radical mechanisms caused by things like UV exposure. Topically applied, it helps to hydrate the skin and maintain this hydration as a humectants, which is a substance used to reduce the loss of moisture. Here's everything you need to know about the hero skincare ingredient that is hyaluronic acid and why you should be slotting it into your regular beautifying routine. That

is, if you haven't already. 'Hyaluronic Acid (which you might find hiding on the labels of some of your skincare products as HA), is naturally occurring in the human body. The substance works as a magnet for moisture, helping your cells retain as much of it as possible so that your skin

feels and appears hydrated, plump and healthy.

Just a single gram of Hyaluronic Acid has the impressive ability to hold up to six litres of water. Add to that, a super smart ability to regulate that moisture within the cells, so as not to drown them and you've got one genius ingredient. If your skin isn't already lapping up the benefits of Hyaluronic Acid, this is why it should be: 1. If skin is sufficiently hydrated, it feels super-soft, plump and pillowy and looks so much more radiant. See ya, Insta-filter. 2. When skin is hydrated, lines and wrinkles (even the deeper ones) appear diminished, so it is a great ingredient for those with ageing skin who are desperate to cling on to their youthful perkiness. 3. It works wonders on everyone. 'Hyaluronic Acid works for any skin type, says Dia Foley, 'even sensitive or breakout-prone skin, as well as those with an oily complexion.' 4. Recent research suggests that Hyaluronic Acid also has antioxidant properties, which means it can act like a shield against free radicals we aren't in control of, like pollution and other aggressors.

Kim Kardashian is teaming up with Winnie Harlow Whilst all of us were losing our actual minds over Kim Kardashian's latest KKW Beauty Body Makeup drop (bye-bye psoriasis), the beauty mogul recently revealed her latest celebrity collab. Having teamed up with sister and fellow beauty entrepreneur, Kylie, the winner of TV competition GlamMasters, Argenis Pinal, and her go-to make-up artist Mario Dedivanovic since launching in 2017, Kardashian has now turned to supermodel Winnie Harlow for her next KKW Beauty collection. The law student announced that she was teaming up with the model, who's vitiligo has become her signature, on an episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians'. In the episode viewers are treated to a sneak peek of the photoshoot for the collab campaign which appears to show Kim and Winnie laying on sand dunes. As of yet there is little detail about what products the collection might consist of, possible price points or launch dates, but with Winnie's love of jewel toned eyeshadow, super long lashes and her uniquely beautiful skin, people are expecting epic things. Needless to say KKW fans are losing it over the exciting announcement, turning to Twitter to show their love for the impending collaboration.

Tech Fact

Technophobia: fear of technology

The phrase first gained recognition during the Industrial Revolution, and has continued to evolve. The term is defined as "the abnormal fear or anxiety about the effects of technology." People or groups who feel uncomfortable or anxious around advanced technology can also be considered "technophobes."

Nomophobia: fear of being without a mobile phone

Nomophobia is the fear of being without a mobile phone, and over 60% of people suffer with nomophobia. This isn’t too surprising given how much we rely on our smartphones to get our news, our social media and generally update ourselves on what is going on in business.

Britain and Spain must create future together British ambassador extols the excellent relationship between the UK and Spain, both inside and outside the EU: We must “create our future together” This is the British Ambassador’s last celebration of The Queen’s Birthday in Madrid, as his six years in Spain come to an end in August. On Thursday 20 June, more than 700 people celebrated the strong links that unite the UK and Spain at The Queen’s Birthday Party, a party to celebrate the 93rd birthday of Queen Elizabeth II, who in 2019 also celebrates 67 years as sovereign. The part ytook place in the British Ambassador’s official residence in Madrid under the banner of “Creating our future” and brought together personalities from the worlds of politics, business and society, such as the Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities, Pedro Duque; the Secretary of State for Tourism, Isabel Maria Oliver; the Congressional spokesperson for Ciudadanos, Inés Arrimadas; and the Vice-President of Banco Santander, Matías RodríguezInciarte. In his welcome address, HMA Simon Manley underlined the excellent ties between both countries and called for the continuation of this special relationship in the future. “We have shared challenges such as climate change, the ageing population, Islamist terrorism and the digital revolution. Inside or outside the European Union we have to tackle them together,” emphasised the Ambassador. Spain and the UK have trade flows of

more than 62,000 million euros per year. More than 300,000 UK nationals live in Spain and nearly 200,000 Spaniards live, study and work in the UK. Academic ties and the collaboration between security forces in the fight against drug trafficking and terrorism are also very strong. This was the last Queen’s Birthday Party in Madrid for Simon Manley who, in August, will hand over to the new Ambassador Hugh Elliott, who has been Director of Communication in the

Government’s Department for Exiting the EU, and the Foreign & Commonwealth Office. “I am grateful to the Spanish people for their collaboration and help, and I confess that this has been the best job of my life”, adds Manley. Using the hashtag #QBPMadrid2019 on Twitter and Instagram you can see everything related to the party. The Embassy has just launched its official Instagram channel @ukinspain.

The Sound of Silence From 1 July, all electric vehicles sold in the European Union must emit a noise when travelling at 20 kilometres per hour or less. The legislation aims at making it easier for other road users, such as pedestrians, to be aware of the presence of the vehicles which may otherwise approach in silence. Generally, the noise of traffic is something we have all become accustomed to, despite the all too frequent incident when pedestrians are distracted, by a mobile phone or perhaps music for example, we are all used to hearing traffic from the early days of learning, stop, look and listen, before we cross the road. Modern electric cars can approach in silence, especially when travelling at low speeds, as even the wheels making

contact with the road surface can be very quiet. Now, the legislation states that these vehicles must emit a noise when travelling at 20 kilometres per hour or slower, so that their presence can be heard.

However, the noise which must be emitted has to be at least 56 decibels. A computer might emit 40 decibels, a fridge 50 and an air conditioning unit 60

decibels, a Boeing 737 landing a mile away is about 90, so the noise is actually not that loud. There is also no mention in the legislation as to what the noise must sound like, and so it could be that vehicle manufacturers replicate the noise of a combustion engine, or a clown car horn, a mosquito, a squeaky wheel, a Boeing 737, or any other sound that they so choose, or maybe installing a unit that allows the driver to choose the ambient sounds that the vehicle emits. By the way, many of the electric cars sold on the market already have a noise creation feature installed, and could actually be quieter than they are, so it´s not something to be overly concerned about if you are considering making the switch to electric.

If you are looking for a very small companion then Oreo could be the boy for you; weighing only 3.16 kilos he is tiny. He was originally found abandoned but that person can no longer keep him. Oreo is a funny, cheeky boy of 2 years who loves going for walk and sitting on your lap. He will have to stay at the kennels until he has had all the relevant vaccinations but can be reserved until he is ready to go.

Bug´s owner was moving away to work and unable to take her with them, hence the reason she is here at the kennels. Bug is a happy, gentle, affectionate dog and although an older girl of nearly 10 years she still loves to play Dolores on 966 710 047 or email info@satanimalrescue.com

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Dear reader, I should apologise in advance for today’s column. But it is not my fault. Honest. Blame them over there. Yes, them! The clubs and players. I can’t help it if the clubs are not actually buying anyone or if the players aren’t throwing hissy fits to get a transfer to somewhere more or less glamorous. What do you expect me to do? Make stuff up? This is not the Daily Mail, my friend. I am a serious football writer. OK, I’m not serious. OK, I’m not a football writer. But hey, neither are the Daily Mail so maybe I should start making stuff up. Anyway, Tammy Abraham clearly didn’t get the email. Chelsea’s returning loan striker says he is ‘buzzing’ to be back at Stamford Bridge and believes that the transfer ban the club is under is a great opportunity for he, and the the other young Chelsea players, to make a good impression.

Tammy, I hate to tell you this but you’re going to be that rebound relationship my friend. You know the one. The one where you go out with just anyone after a proper relationship splits up because, well, you need to date someone. But then, as soon as someone better comes along or, in this case, Chelsea are allowed to buy ready-made failures at centre forward again, Tammy will be cast aside wondering what he did or said wrong. As far as I know, Chelsea still haven’t sorted out who their new manager is going to be - let alone taken the register of all the 57 players coming back to Cobham from various clubs across the world. That said, it’s not like Chelsea to start pre-season training with nobody properly in charge, is it? Last week, it was being rumoured that Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s move to Manchester United was happening and was potentially distracting him from England’s U21 European Championship tournament where AWB managed to score a late owngoal against France. It’s not Wan-Bissaka being distracted that means England are coming home early. It’s the fact that Aidy Boothroyd is in charge. Crystal Palace are believed to have made it clear that they want £50m upfront to even entertain the idea of selling their right back. So, naturally, Ed Woodward brought all his negotiating talent to the table and went back to Palace with an offer of £55m. And you wonder why United are struggling these days. And, once United have been able to cross AWB off their list, they will be allowed to move on to their next target. That’s right. The selfproclaimed biggest club in the world

appear to only have the ability to work on one transfer target at a time and there’s no guarantee they will secure that one! Real Madrid, if we want to play a game of comparisons, seemed to announce an entirely new squad last week. And they still want Paul Pogba. When the £55m deal breaks down, United will move on to Norwich’s Max Aarons who is, conveniently, the player Palace have earmarked as their new right-back if they do sell Wan-Bissaka to United. David Brooks has been waiting far too long to be linked to Old Trafford given he is young, plays in the Premier League and British so he will be delighted to know that Ed Woodward might get around to contacting Bournemouth sometime in mid-August to make things happen. It’ll take that long because Mr Ed needs to fire off an email to West Ham about Issa Diop and Declan Rice. One player who definitely won’t be joining United next season is Ajax’s Matthijs de Ligt. He has seen the light, ahem, and is currently deciding between being a better version of David Luiz for Maurizio Sarri at Juventus and a big sack full of cash with his name on it in Paris. Potentially joining him in Turin, should he opt for Italy, will be Chelsea’s Jorginho, obviously. The little midfielder is contractually obliged to follow Sarri wherever he goes which means there will be a gap in Chelsea defensive midfield area. Now, if only they had the best defensive midfielder in the world at the club or something. Here’s one for the Scottish readers. Celtic’s Kieran Tierney is being linked to Arsenal. I wouldn’t worry too much Celtic would like some money for him and Arsenal don’t appear to have any.

The Celts Club De Golf

Captains’ Prize What a fantastic day with 85 members competing for the honour of winning that coveted prize, the Captains. As usual there are a number of people that need to thanked, our competitions committee under the guidance of Camillus Fitzpatrick and ably assisted by Philip Mountford and Terry Fitzgerald. Denis McCormack and Susy Gomez for their organisation of the night’s entertainment. Jean, Paul, Karolina and allthe course staff at La Serena, well done and thank you. To Gloria, Vanessa and Marijose and all the clubhouse staff thank you. The day began with the traditional drive-in, it was one of the most entertaining ever. Jim a player with a natural draw, or hook some might say, subdued the nerves teed up and duly managed a clean strike, straight right into the water. Second ball now and feeling a little apprehensive teed up, knocked the ball of the tee with his address, we all fell silent to give him a chance and yes you guessed it, straight right again. Nearest the Captains’ drive became difficult to mark. But Terry sorted it for us. We played off the white and blue stakes, with a few grumbles, but the results justified the decision. Camillus

sorted the cards at La Serena and we all made our way to El Prado restaurant in San Miguel for the evening dinner dance and presentation of prizes. Jackie Whyte provided the top class entertainment in her usual professional manner and soon had us all singing and dancing. Thank you Jackie. Down to the results of the day. Our special prizes of the longest drive nearest a white line on the 11th went to Gary Conroy. The other very special prize nearest to the Captains’ drive went to Tony Woodward after the snorkel had been brought into play. QUESADA BOWLS CLUB MATCH REPORT This week the weather got hotter and so did the competition in the leagues! Quesada Blenheims lost their match against Emerald Isle Victors despite winning the overall shots 80-72, Emerald Isle won the match 8-4 points. This means the Blenheims are in 3rd place in the league, 9 points behind the leaders San Luis Wellingtons but with a game in hand. It’s all still to play for in the South Alicante summer league, Spitfire Division. Unfortunately Quesada Lancasters are not doing so well. They lost their match against San Miguel Moors 12-0 and 152 54 shots. Meanwhile in the VCL league Division A it was a nail-biting finish to the season for Quesada Lions. In their last match they were beaten by San Luis Falcons 8-4 points and 90-83 shots. So despite tying on 70 points each with San Miguel Sheriffs, the Lions were edged into 3rd place in the league on shot difference. Disappointing in terms of league position but a great season for the Lions with some excellent wins and shot scores throughout. Well done to the Lions squad! In Division B of the VCL League Quesada Tigers last match against Greenlands

Jasmin was a good result. They drew the match 6 points each but with Greenlands winning the shots 83-68. Unfortunately the Tigers finish the season at the bottom of the division despite some spirited matches on the way. Thanks to all the squad members for their hard work and support throughout the season. Onwards and upwards next year! In the South Alicante Knockout competition, remaining Quesada representation is as follows: Mens singles (Peter Morgan) Ladies singles (Mel Highland) Mens Pairs (Terry Morgan and Alan Barton) Mixed Pairs (Terry Morgan and Claire Dye) Quesada Bowls is a friendly club with a mixture of competition, league and casual players. BEACH HANDBALL CHAMPIONSHIP AT LA ZENIA ABBEY ANGLING We Fished the 5th round of the Summer Series at The Embalse De Pedrera on Tuesday the 18th of June. It was a beautiful summers day with virtually no wind intially and it had been a full moon that night. Many experienced anglers will know that following a full moon fishing is often affected and the fish become reluctant to feed. This was indeed the case at Pedrera as most of the field struggled to catch fish. The match was pegged around either side of the old match point but the water was very low and lots of reeds were evident and became problamatic in virtually every peg. Ian Brown continued his excellent run of form to complete a hatrick of wins. He used the method feeder at about 40yds and fished pellet to catch 11 carp for a total weight of 11.600kg. In second place was the every consistent Neil McBernie with 4.960kg and third was Richard King with 4.440kg. 1st Ian Brown 11.600kg , Method feeder with pellet 2nd Neil McBernie, 4.960kg, feeder with pellet 3rd Richard King, 4.440kg ,

method feeder with pellet or corn. There are still some vacancies available for membership at the club. All details are available on our website www.abbeyangling.es or from Terry on 965328368 RODS & REELS The following day were where once again at The Embalse De Pedrera. One angler from the previous day refused to attend and appeared to be a broken man after the fishing at the same venue the day before. I can only say what a difference a day makes. Upon our arrival it was slightly cooler and much more wind was evident witha nice ripple was on the water and the match was pegged with virtually identical pegs from the day before. Lenny Bolton, drawn on the old peg one, in a bay on his own on the left hand side took full advantage of a good draw to win the match convincingly. He caught carp all day long, initially on the feeder with pellet but then on the pole with pellet and paste to compile a very impressive weight of 40.140kg. In second place was Dave Hutchinson with 22.620kg who

also employed similar tactics but fished mainly pellet on the pole. In third place was the noisiest angler in the world, who seems to be fishing with an imaginary friend, Richard Wood with 19.200kg who fished the method feeder. The fishing was that good I will give you the top 6 results. 1st Lenny Bolton 40.140kg, fishing the feeder and pole on pellet and paste. 2nd Dave Hutchinson 22.620kg, fishing the feeder then pole on pellet 3rd Richard Wood 19.200kg, fishing the method feeder with pellet 4th Bill Reade 17.940kg,fishing the method feeder with pellet 5th Marlene Richardson 15.600kg, fishing the method feeder with pellet 6th Ian Brown 14.450kg, fishing the method feeder with pellet There are still some vacancies at the Club and if anyone is interested in joining please contact Richard Wood on 61145142 Tight Lines TERRY SCREEN
