Less Brits visiting Spain A

nother record tourism year is forecast for 2019 based upon closing figures for the month of June. In the first half of 2019, a total of 38.2 million foreign holidaymakers visited

Spain, an increase of 2.8 percent year on year, and their spending per head rose by 3.7 percent, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE). The average holidaymaker from abroad spent €163 a day in June, which included accommodation, food, excursions, transport, souvenirs and general entertainment – a rise of 8.2 percent or an average of €1,098 per head for the whole trip. UK nationals totalled 2.1 million in June and 8.3 million in the first six months of this year – a reduction of 5.3 percent on the same month in 2018 and of 1.4 percent for the first half of 2018. Acting minister for industry, trade and tourism, Reyes Maroto, says she is 'very concerned' about the shrinking numbers of British visitors. British tourists are always likely to be a feature. With an estimated 275,000 UK nationals living in the country and its popularity for buying holiday homes, expatriates will continue to be visited by friends and family. So, trips here are cheaper because accommodation is available without having to pay for hotels or apartments.

But Maroto says although Brexit is 'a great unknown' that could affect tourism in Spain, and the extent of these effects impossible to predict, she believes the recovery of competitor destinations could be an even greater influence. For Brits merely seeking warm weather, beaches and swimming pools, offers in the Greek islands, Tunisia, Egypt

and Turkey have usually managed to undercut Spain on price, although until recently, safety fears in light of repeat terrorist attacks drew holidaymakers away from the latter three. Now they are all becoming trusted destinations again, it is possible British sunseekers travelling to Spain will decline in number. Brits still made up the largest country group in the first six months of 2019, despite their fewer numbers, and a fall was also seen in French tourist totals in the first half of the year, by 2.2 percent to 4.7 million. In terms of spending whilst on holiday in Spain, the Brits were the most flash, parting with a collective total of €7.75bn in the first half of 2019.

HELP US CATCH THEM! Suspected murderers, sex offenders and drugs traffickers are among just 11 fugitives left on the run in a campaign that has seen 84 offenders already caught across Europe. The National Crime Agency and the charity Crimestoppers are urging the public to help catch the last fugitives who have escaped justice. All of them have connections to Spain but may have moved around over the years and will be using false identities. Their details are being re-released as millions of Brits are enjoying their summer holidays abroad. “As my fellow Britons know, the success of Crimestoppers, whether in the UK or Spain, is all about the active support of ordinary people for the work of the police, so I would like to appeal to British residents and holidaymakers in Spain to be on the lookout this summer for these 11 fugitives from British justice. Your information, given anonymously, can put these criminals back where they belong: behind bars in the UK,” said British Ambassador to Spain Simon Manley. The 11 include Sarah Panitzke. Panitzke, 45, from Fulford, near York, is wanted by HMRC and is accused of laundering approximately £1bn for a crime group involved in VAT fraud. To carry out the alleged frauds, she travelled extensively to places including Dubai, Spain and

Andorra. She absconded in May 2013 before her trial finished. Panitzke has a Yorkshire accent and is about 5ft 5in tall. Eighteen members of her crime group received sentences totalling 135 years. Also on the list is alleged murderer Allan Foster, 43, who has been on the run since May 2006 when David Rice was shot dead as he sat in his car in South Shields, Tyne and Wear. In June, Christopher Guest More Jr, 41, became the latest fugitive to be arrested and returned to the UK after being on the run for 16 years. Andy Cooke-Welling, of the NCA’s International Crime Bureau, said: “Operation Captura has been a resounding success. But we are still hunting the remaining fugitives on our list and will not stop. We urge holidaymakers and expats in Spain and elsewhere across Europe to keep their eyes and ears open this summer. “There may also be people in the UK with vital information on their whereabouts, and we would urge them to get in touch. Having the public’s attention focused on them makes it so much harder to hide.” Anyone with information about the whereabouts of a fugitive should can contact Crimestoppers 100% anonymously at crimestoppers-uk.org or call 0800 555 111. If sighted, the public are advised not to approach any of the fugitives but to contact the police immediately.

Man gored to death at local festival

Continued from page 3 (from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm) at the Municipal Leisure Centre in Torrevieja, there are summer parties with fun music and popular prices on drinks and snacks, organised by the council for the elderly.

Better home help Pilar de la Horadada has received a grant from the Diputación de Alicante for more than 47,000 euros to be allocated to the municipalities Home Help Service. These grants are aimed at municipalities with less than 50,000 inhabitants, and are annual. To the amount issued will be added to the one received by the Department of Equality and Inclusive Policies. In total, the City Council has been awarded 79,131 euros. This budget is intended for the payment of salaries to the professionals hired to provide the Home Help Service. The purpose of this service is to meet the daily life needs of users and at the same time contribute to their independent living. Services offered included those of a welfare and rehabilitative nature but also include preventive and educational programmes. With this budget, the City Council can offer this service to the local community as required. The funds will also help support the aim of preventing unnecessary hospitalisations.

Carnival time The Councillor for Fiestas, Concha Sala, together with the president of the Cultural Association Carnaval de Torrevieja, Francisco Pizana and the president of the chirigota “Los Sangochaos”, Vicente Zapata, have presented the plans for this year’s Summer Carnival Parade which will take place on 16th August. The event will start at 8:30pm leaving from the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre and weaving its way to Miguel Hernández Square and will run over two days with the Carnival parade on Friday and on Saturday 17th with the performances of the invited chirigotas, all of which are participating in the Chirigotas Carnival Contest of Cadiz. The festival will open the performance of the local chirigota "Los Sangochaos", followed by José Antonio Vera Luque, who takes part for the second consecutive year performing "Children without a name", followed by Manolo Santana with "The curse of the Black Lapa” and the chirigota “Daddy Cadi ”. Tickets for the festival can be purchased through the chirigotastorrevieja website and at the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre. Ticket prices range from € 15 to € 25.

Orchestral manoeuvres The Councillor for Culture, Antonio Quesada, the director of the Youth Orchestra of the Province of Alicante (OJPA), Francisco Maestre, and the President of the Torrevieja Symphony Orchestra, Pelayo Mellado, have presented the plans for the VII International Festival of Young Continued on page 8

A man has died at a Spanish festival after being knocked to the ground and gored by a young bull. The unnamed 26 year-old was standing near some steps at the EL Pinos fiestas, Alicante, when the animal was released into the square on 1st August. The bull charged at the man and as he tried to make his escape, it thrust its

horns into his leg causing him to suffer an eight inch gash to the calf of his leg. The man was helped to his feet by festival goers and given emergency medical treatment by doctors on site before being rushed to Elda Hospital. However the injury had ruptured a main artery in the man’s leg and he bled to death whilst on the operating table.

Torrevieja protects against terror attacks The PP local government team has purchased 22 “barrier” planters that prevent vehicles from passing through public spaces. These will be strategically placed from Vista Alegre, to La Libertad, through Juan Aparicio and Los Españoles avenue and on the beach of Cura. Following the jihadist attack on the Ramblas of Barcelona, Torrevieja placed 42 concrete barriers around the cities promenade to prevent the passage of vehicles on to the maritime facade which is frequented daily by thousands of people. The new planets will replace the concrete barriers with a more aesthetic solution that will be in keeping with the attractive look of the see front but fulfil the same preventive goal. The contract has been awarded directly with a downward bidding cost of 17,707 euros and tendered to three companies and published in the municipal website, in this case, with a purely informative objective since the municipality had already chosen the supplier. The planters will be planted with flowers and shrubs and will in place in a few weeks on the walkways, once the contract is formalised. The current barriers - similar to those that can be found in road works to separate lanes - offer an image that adds very little to

the tourist nature of this area, the most popular in the centre of Torrevieja. Meanwhile, the government board has decided to start the file to hire a free and rotary parking management system for a large section of Ramón Gallud Street, the main artery road of the town centre. The objective is to allow parking in part of the street again, but without imposing a blue zone and ensuring that there is mobility in the parking lot with a time control of the parked vehicles. The contract sets an annual expense of more than 60,000 euros for five years. The file is in its initial phase and is unlikely to be underway before the end of the year.

The next morning town hall officials held a minute silence and the following day of the festival was cancelled as a mark respect to the deceased. After hearing of the man’s death the Mayor of El Pinos, Lazaro Azorin, said he was heartbroken. He said: ”I wish to convey my most

sincere condolences to the young man’s family at this difficult time.” A funeral for the man, who was from the neighbouring town of Petrer, was held on Saturday. Event organiser Fransisco Albert said that the man was a ‘professional’ at the festival and had known the risks involved when working with bulls.

Costa Blanca Lions Summer Camp Summer

The Costa Blanca Lions Summer Camp brings 22 young people from around the world to visit the Costa Blanca and enjoy a mix of cultural, sporting and charitable activities. The Lions Clubs from across the Costa Blanca work together to put on a packed schedule of events for these youngsters and promote friendship, respect and solidarity among these international visitors.

This year the summer camp has been sponsored by Specsavers Ópticas, which has provided t-shirts for the youngsters to wear. Francisco Jurado, Store Director of Specsavers Ópticas in Torrevieja, Guardamar and La Zenia also visited the Melvin Jones glasses recycling centre with the group to see the important work they do and help to clean and sort the glasses before they are delivered to those in need around the world. They are proud

to be able to support such a great initiative. “We have been collecting glasses to donate to the Lions Clubs across all our stores for many years now and work closely with our local clubs, so we are very happy to sponsor the uniform for the camp and help out in activities where we can”, commented Francisco Jurado. “It was very valuable for me to visit the Melvin Jones Glasses Recycling Centre and see

the excellent work they do for others and help out alongside the Costa Blanca Lions Club Summer Camp participants. From September we will look at other ways that we can help the centre and support the incredible work they do.” “As an international optical brand with stores in 10 different countries and a multicultural, multilingual team here in Spain, we whole-heartedly support the key message of friendship, respect and solidarity between different nationalities. It is great to be able to welcome these youngsters to our area and help them have an amazing experience they will never forget. ”Specsavers Ópticas stores are located in Calpe, Javea, Benidorm, Torrevieja, Guardamar and La Zenia on the Costa Blanca and offer high quality, affordable optical care and free, comprehensive eye tests including important health checks. Rojales Council continues Spangles at Corales en el Mar to support rescue centre A group of young adults, between 16 and 21 years of age, recently visited Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre (EHCRC) in Rojales as part of a motivational and guidance programme for youngsters. The young participants were part of the JOOP Programme (Jove Oportunitat), which is designed and organised by the IVAJ (Institut Valencià de la Joventut) and financed by the European Social Fund. The programme participants, together with the town council technician and their teacher, witnessed the centre's care of 120 rescue horses, ponies and donkeys. Miriam Ferrández, the Rojales group teacher said: “Our group visit has helped us all to become more aware of the importance of caring for, and respecting animals. For some of the group, the idea of volunteering has also been aroused, which is very positive.” One of the participants said: “It was very nice to touch the animals and be with them, but also very sad to hear their stories and to know people could mistreat them. Luckily there are rescue centres like this where animals are helped and become happy again.” Yet another student added: “I've always liked animals and cannot understand how people could be capable of hurting them or abandoning them. I would like to volunteer here.” Rescue centre founders, Sue and Rod Weeding, were delighted the young adults chose to visit the centre. "It is very encouraging to witness these young people interacting with our rescue animals," said Sue. EHCRC currently employs three locals

as staff, but hope to provide more opportunities to the community should funding become available for more employment. "Rojales council are incredibly supportive and are continuing to pursue possibilities to include our centre in employment and tourism opportunities," said Sue. "Should funding become available, maybe one or more of these young people could work at the centre in the future." The rescue centre is currently ranking highly on Trip Advisor’s list of recommended activities in Rojales. The centre is now receiving more visitors from far afield including holidaymakers who are on cruises and dock in Alicante and if the date doesn’t coincide with an Open Day then they can easily organise a Private Tour. EHCRC is also now appearing in some in-flight magazines like Flybe. If you would like to find out more information on visiting, supporting and donating then check out their website http://easyhorsecare.net/

The Torrevieja Councillor for Emergencies, Federico Alarcón was on hand to watch an emergency drill carried out on La Mata beach as part of the beach safety programme. Crowds gathered around the professionals as

they dealt with a simulated emergency situation with saw them attending a ‘victim’ in the water. According to the brief the surfer had suffered a blow to the head from his board and lost consciousness in the water. The ‘accident’ was spotted by a lifeguard who was working at La Mata beach, in front of the Pura Vida beach bar. After seeing what happened the lifeguard activated the protocol of actions established by UTE SALVAMAR. The ‘accident’ happened at a distance from the shore, out of the buoy line, so the rescue had to be carried out with the aid of the jet ski that is based on the beach of La Mata. The boat, with skipper, lifeguard and towed stretcher, moved quickly from its base on the beach to where the accident happened. At the same time lifeguards on the beach were ready with the necessary equipment such as a semi-automatic defibrillator, oxygen and first aid kit assuming the victim has the worst injuries possible.

After being alerted by the Head of Emergency Relief the Coordinator of UTE SALVAMAR notified the health services available to the rescue location. After getting the ‘victim’ from the water and assessing his condition, it was determined that he had suffered a cardio-respiratory arrest. The lifeguards then proceeded to assemble the oxygen kit and the defibrillator and activate the instrumental CPR protocol. After arriving at the beach the health professionals of

UTE SALVAMAR in the ambulance took over from the lifeguards and continued with the resuscitation. After about 10 minutes they recovered a pulse and proceeded to stabilise the patient for immediate transfer to the University Hospital of Torrevieja. Local Police officers, alerted by 112, attended the scene to clear the beach area and keep people at bay while the casualty was treated and until he was taken to Torrevieja Hospital.

A blacksmith will set up a complete workshop and show the sculptures he has made and a friendly potter offers the opportunity to turn a small bowl on her wheel. There will also be workshops for children and stalls with traditional delicacies. Felipe sells pan de higos,

made of dried figs and almonds and will show you how arrop i tallaetes Valencian speciality made of grape syrup and pieces of pumpkin - is made. There will also be a tavern, run by a group of local youngsters. Two talented jugglers will jump around on stilts, ride on crazy bikes and crack jokes with the public and the fair will close on both evenings with a fire show. The fair is organised by Amata, the regional craft association that has spent the last 24 years organising the few real craft markets to be found in this part of Spain. Amata insists on that everything on the stalls has to be made by hand and by the person actually on

the stall. The fair coincides with the fiestas of the Virgen de las Nieves, which are held every other year, because Hondón shares its patron saint with the neighbouring village of Aspe. On Saturday, at the end of the fair, the famous Correfocs or fire run is held at midnight. This is where a group of people, dressed as devils and other fantastic characters will run, jump and dance around a big float that drives slowly through the streets of the village, while setting off all sorts of fireworks, a spectacular - and above all a noisy event that attracts hordes of people to the village. SAVE THE MAR MENOR!

The Mar Menor is unique in Europe, and perhaps the world. Now it is slowly dying, and the marine creatures, such as the sea horses, that live in it are being poisoned, as are the surrounding beaches. The discharge of polluting products from agriculture, especially nitrates, as well as sewage, industrial discharges, etc., continue to enter the Mar Menor. The flooding around the Los Alcazares area is also getting worse every year, adding to the pollution, and people’s homes are being threatened. Protestors believe that the principal reason for these disasters is the failure of authorities and politicians alike to ensure that the canals, ramblas and waterways constructed to prevent flooding, are kept

clear and in good repair and that no pollutants reach the water’s edge. A group of dedicated individuals is striving to stop this environmental disgrace but despite repeated promises those responsible refuse to act. We need help. Not money but signatures of support. Please sign this petition and help us protect the environment, and the people who live near to and around the Mar Menor. To sign the petition please search for: Petition. Save the Mar Menor. (TIP: Right click to translate to English) Please note that we do not want any donations. Simply your signature and another e-mail address to help spread the word.

The Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, accompanied by the Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana have opened the new road which connect the CV-95 Torrevieja with Orihuela Costa and is hoped to alleviate congestion on the N332 and CV95. A key part of the local infrastructure plan was the connection of the primary network between Torrevieja and Orihuela without going through the N-332. The area, which will also feature a new urbanisation, has about 288,000 square meters, of which 57,000 square meters are of green areas and 21,000 square meters of tertiary soils, destined for commercial areas and homes, with a maximum of 1,298 possible homes. Likewise, the entire partial plan has LED street lighting, underground containers, all green areas have an irrigation network

connection to the main municipal network and the existing pine forests in the area have been maintained. The road, Avenida Denia, which borders the municipality of Orihuela along the coast, through a roundabout that is shared between Torrevieja and Orihuela, has an approximate length of 1.5 kilometres, is 30 meters wide and has four lanes with a parking area

and landscaping. The Mayor of Torrevieja stressed that the opening of this road will serve to decongest the traffic saturation on the CV-95, and that from now on, once people know that the road is open it will become a of the most important travel routes in our area.” Finally, the mayor of Orihuela thanked Eduardo Dolón for his invitation to open this new road and stressed the importance of continuing to improve links between the municipality of Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa, ensuring that they will continue to introduce improvements to solve the traffic problems that currently exist on the N-332. The road and planned urbanisation can be found on the ‘Torrevieja hospital road’ heading away from Torrevieja towards the San Miguel and AP/ motorway island.

Bus crash on AP7 The Guardia Civil has confirmed that two people have been seriously injured after a coach collided with three cars on the AP-7 motorway outside of Alicante. The bus, reportedly ‘full of tourists’ was operated by Portuguese travel company Vale Do Ave. None of the passengers on the bus were thought to be seriously injured – the two people who were hospitalised were said to be in one of the cars.

The accident happed at 10.30pm on Saturday evening at KM 674 in the El Campello area, which is the exit to Alicante Airport. An eyewitness said there were ‘four or five’ ambulances on scene and ‘around 10 police cars’ in attendance and emergency services were seen taking people on stretcher from the wreckage. According to local information sources

the side of the coach was open and the luggage locker was full of suitcases, so it is believed that the coach was ‘packed’ when it crashed. The coach is believed to have been a 52-seater and had hit the car in front, which had crumpled into a ‘chunk of metal’ according to witnesses, who also said that there were flashing lights everywhere and that the accident ‘looked quite bad’.

GBP / EUR UPDATE It was a very difficult week for the pound as fears of a no-deal Brexit escalated and there was little from the government to alleviate those fears. The CBI reported that neither the UK nor the EU is prepared for a no-deal Brexit and that "even with mitigation, no fewer than 23 of 27 areas of the UK economy would experience disruption". Sterling started the week by losing an average of 2.1%, falling to a 28-month low against the US dollar and a 22-month low against the euro. It did manage to regain some of its losses later in the week. The GfK measure showed that there had been an improvement in consumer confidence from -13 to -11 but the Bank of England (BoE) didn’t show the same optimism. The BoE held interest rates at 0.75% and cut the growth outlook for 2019 and 2020. Governor Mark Carney stressed that the forecasts were based on the UK leaving the EU with a deal and that those forecasts could be further downgraded in the event of no-deal. The US Federal Reserve cutting interest rates added to

the pressure on sterling and investors will be looking for more positive news next week, which may be thin on the ground with parliament in recess. While not facing the same level of pressure as sterling, the euro also had some challenges this week. GDP across Europe expanded by a provisional 0.2% in the second quarter, meeting forecast but falling far short of Q1’s expansion. Confidence measures were all lower in July, according to GfK and German consumer confidence softened to 9.7. In Spain, the two inflation measures came in at 0.5% for CPI and 0.7% for HICP. Spanish retail sales in June were up by 2.4% from the same month last year. Headline inflation was down from 1.3% to a provisional 1.1% and core inflation - excluding food and fuel slowed from 1.1% to 0.9%. The numbers reported appear to give further impetus to the European Central Bank’s plans to ease monetary policy further which means that the euro may have some further changes on the horizon.

Farewell special lady Twenty one years ago, Scots lass Wilma Aitkinhead residing in Campoverde with husband Bill, found she was a little bored and needed to find an outlet for her exceptional organisational skills. After many years as a bookkeeper ,in the UK, she wanted a role where she came into contact with people, was kept busy, work in a team, could find personal satisfaction and felt valued. She found exactly what she was desperately seeking by becoming a volunteer for Age Concern in their

Charity Shop in Torrevieja. The opportunity arose for a shop manager, so after a few months of working in the shop one day a week, she jumped in with both feet and took over the reins. Wilma thrived in this position and achieved all her own goals which in turn benefitted Age Concern. On Wednesday 24th July Wilma retired, much to the regret of Age Concern, her fabulous team of volunteers and all international customers that frequented

the shop. Her volunteer team treated her to a fabulous night out at the Masa Hotel and Age Concern spoiled her with an afternoon tea party at the Day Centre in La Siesta amongst many past and present

volunteers. President, Maureen Payne, gave a heart warming speech and presented her with a basket of flowers and a travel voucher for 250 euros. Wilma responded with grateful thanks to Age

Concern for all the support given over so many years and vowed not to lose touch. After a cava toast, Wilma handed over the keys to her successor, Susan Self, and wished her much success, pleasure and fun being, not only a valued volunteer, but as the new shop manager. Susan, from La Florida, said how being a volunteer for such a respected charity was an important opportunity for her and looked forward working with the existing volunteers and is looking forward to adding to that team in the very near future. So it’s hasta luego to Wilma and hola to Susan.

Tel: 604 270 171 Live in Spain more than four weeks a year?

- Here's why it's worth pre-planning your funeral as an expat - When the time comes, will your loved ones know how to arrange a funeral in Spain? Traditional Spanish funerals happen as quickly as 24-48 hours after someone dies, and delays could cost loved ones hundreds of Euros in mortuary expenses. In addition, it’s common practice for Funeral Directors in Spain to request either part or full payment upfront. That means your next of kin might have to pay hundreds or thousands of Euros before the funeral can take place. This can make it much harder to shop around. Language barriers, unfamiliar funeral systems and different customs mean that your loved ones might find it difficult to compare funeral services and make a choice. Whether you live in Spain all year round, or have a summer home here, a prepaid funeral plan from Avalon lets you pay

for your funeral in advance. And if you split your time between the UK and Spain, an Avalon plan is valid in both countries, so you can have a funeral in Spain or back in the UK. Avalon are the fastest growing provider of funeral plans in Europe, helping more than 70,000 customers across Europe and the UK for over 25 years. They work with a network of local and independent Funeral Directors to help your loved ones cope with the unfamiliar Spanish funeral system, and give you the send-off you want.

Make your house smell like home Moving into a new place and getting a fresh start is always a nice feeling. But sometimes no matter how much you clean or how hard you scrub your new place just doesn’t feel like home — at least not yet. It’s quite possible that a home fragrance is the last accessory you need to add that finishing touch. When it comes to home scents you’ll quickly find that there are a wide variety of delivery methods which means you have a lot of options. Yankee Candle Yankee candles are one of the best candles you can buy, they have just the right amount of fragrance without being too overpowering. An added benefit to candles is the ambiance they add to any room. Yankee candies provide up to 150 hours of burn time, but clearly it’s best not to leave them unattended. They come in a range of scents to suits all tastes and can help set the mood of the room from fresh, to romantic to festive. Reed Diffusers Reed diffusers are an attractive option because of their low maintenance no fuss, no muss quality. No dead batteries or fear of burning down the house here. Reed diffusers pull the scent through the reed where it evaporates in the air. With the beautiful bottles that reed diffusers come with it’s easy to see why they can quickly and easily kick your decor up a notch. These can be a little overpowering, especially in a small room. So, start with half the amount of reeds supplied and add to them as

required. Automatic air fresheners A simple and cost effective solution to scenting your home, these devices can be bought in most supermarkets and homeware stores. They come in several colour options and design shapes have improved over recent years. These are battery powered and allow you to control the amount of spray used and the frequency of the spray. The freshener comes in a wide range of fragrance choices. Nebulising Essential Oil Diffuser Nebulising diffusers are the strongest aromatherapy diffusers on the market because they don’t use water or heat for distribution. These machine are electric and so can be used to your convenience and simply unplugged when required. The power supply also means that you can cover a lot of square footage quickly and efficiently. As an added

bonus nebulisers come in a ranges of designer colours, shapes and sizes add a sleek touch to any decor. Candle Warmers etc. Wax melts are usually made from paraffin wax and the end result is a home fragrance that lasts longer than air fresheners and most essential oils. Wax warmers fragrance your home like a candle but without the soot and the worry of an open flame. These can be brought to melts, classic accommodate aromatherapy scents and various colours to suit your decor and tastes. Aera Smart Diffuser If you want to go a bit more high tech for your home fragrance, there’s an app for that. The Aera smart home diffuser is a base that works with proprietary Aera fragrance capsules. The benefit here is that you can control the fragrance strength, create schedules and even create unique fragrance profiles, all from your smartphone.

Travel survey Greeks enjoy the longest holidays of any European Union citizens, according to an analysis of new data. Eurostat’s survey of 1.3 billion leisure and business trips shows wide disparities in the travel habits of EU nations. Citizens of Greece spend an average of 9.9 days on a trip – almost double the EU-wide mean of 5.1 days. The only other nation staying away for over a week was Luxembourg, at 7.1 days. Estonians and Latvians have the shortest trips, averaging just 3.3 days – exactly one-third of the typical Greek holiday. Next briefest is Finland, across the Baltic, at 3.4 days. British travellers are away for an above-average 5.5 days, but the Irish are lower at 4.6. The statistical office of the European Union found half of all trips involving at least one overnight stay were for holidays and leisure, one-third for visits to relatives and friends and one in eight for business. Eurostat's figures also reveal the proportion of trips that were taken outside the home country. Romanians are the most loyal, with all but 6 percent holidaying at home. The only other country with overseas trips in single figures was Spain, at 9.4 percent. While the Europe-wide average was 26.7 per cent of trips taken abroad, the UK was well above at almost one in three: 32.8 percent. Citizens of smaller countries

with a land border have a far higher propensity for foreign holidays. Four out of five trips by Belgians are outside the country. For Slovenia the figure is almost two out of three and for Austria a half. However, Luxembourg is far more extreme, and appears to have almost no domestic travel industry to speak of. Only 1.7 per cent of citizens take a trip involving an overnight stay in the Grand Duchy. The people of Luxembourg also take the highest proportion of trips by air of any nation in Continental Europe, at 42 percent. They are beaten only by the islanders of Ireland (43 percent), Cyprus (49 per cent) and Malta (63 percent). Three out of 10 trips made by UK citizens involve flying. By far the biggest proportion of journeys are made by car, with an average of 64 percent. Slovenians are most in love with their cars, used for 85 percent of trips. More than three-quarters of trips that begin in Portugal, Spain, Bulgaria, Hungary and the Czech Republic involve a car. Among the British, exactly half of trips are taken by car. The only countries to score lower were Luxembourg, Cyprus and Ireland – all on 48 percent, reflecting the high proportion travelling by air. The most enthusiastic rail users are the French and the Germans, but even then only one in seven trips is made by train. The EU-

wide average for rail journeys is one in nine, but the UK scores one in eight. Only one Greek in 90 uses a train for a holiday or business trip involving an overnight stay. While long-distance coach travel is a minority activity across the European Union, with only 5.5 per cent, the figure is much higher in the Balkans. Bulgaria (16.2), Croatia (18.7) and Romania (19.2) top the list. For the UK, the figure is 3.8 per cent. Of the Continental nations, France (2.4) and Netherlands (2.2) are least likely to travel by bus.

In response to over tourism issues, two of the Mediterranean’s busiest ports may change how they manage cruise ship arrivals. Palma de Mallorca in Spain and Dubrovnik in Croatia receive thousands of international cruise ship passengers daily but they’re struggling to cope with what most of its citizens see as an excess of tourist numbers, as well as the air pollution produced by cruise ships. The port of Palma, in south-west Mallorca, is the third busiest in Europe for cruise ships (receiving 1.75 million passengers annually) and the second most polluted (behind Barcelona). Now residents, activists and organisations have come together to sign a petition for the number of cruise ships to be curbed to just one per day, with a maximum of 4000 passengers disembarking daily. The petition states that “mega-cruises at Palma has increased in unsustainable and undesirable ways for our city, causing a serious environmental and territorial impact, as well as growing social protests.” It has so far received 11,000 signatures and will be presented at a conference in Palma on Friday. Marta Ferriol, coordinator of the NGO Tramuntana XXI, one of the organisations that signed the petition, told the Guardian: “The problem is cruise ship tourists arrive all at once and they

saturate the historic part of the city. They don’t spend money in the city. We’ve recently seen a report from Venice that says this type of tourism brings few benefits to residents.” While city authorities have yet to respond to the petition, Dubrovnik is already moving ahead with its plans to improve how the city manages a high volume of cruise ships. In order to “preserve and protect” its cultural heritage, the city and Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish best practices for long-term destination management. The MOU sets out plans to implement the 2020 cruise ship berthing policy to cap the number of cruise ship arrivals and will introduce the previously developed Respect the City visitor campaign, which aims to promote Dubrovnik as a more sustainable tourist destination, as well as limit the number of daily visitors to the UNESCO-protected Old Town. Mayor Mato Franković said: “This commitment is just a beginning of a joint systematic, integrated and participative approach that will target some of the most important tourism issues locally and globally.”

Playa de la Granadella

This gorgeous beach near Jรกvea, on Spain's Costa Blanca coast, is known as La Granadella and its seagrass beds make it perfect for snorkelling. The horseshoe-shaped cove has calm, sapphire water and is flanked by a dense forest of emerald Aleppo pine trees. Why go? For its sheer beauty, even though it is shingly rather than sandy. The horseshoe-shaped cove with Blue Flag status has calm, sapphire water and is flanked by a dense forest of emerald Aleppo pine trees. The only problem is that it is so gorgeous it gets very crowded. Who goes? Spanish and European families, both tourists and residents. There is a long-standing expat population in this area, from the UK, Germany and other northern European countries.

What is there to do? Be sure to take a snorkel and mask. The seabed falls away quite steeply from the shore, but if you swim out for 65 feet or so the shingle is replaced by sand with posidonia seagrass beds. You can also walk through the woods behind the beach, breathing in the scent of the pine trees, or up to the castle or lookout point on the cliffs. Bars and bites There is a shack on the beach and a few restaurants in the row of buildings behind the bay. Have I won the lottery?

I came to the computer and internet late in life, and am enjoying it immensely. Recently I received an email from the Australian Lottery, saying that I had won several million dollars. It also said that in order to release the funds, I needed to send 600 Pounds to the sender. I was overjoyed at the win and told my friend who warned me that she thought it was a scam. I am cross with her and think she might be jealous.

Spanish mortgages get cheaper Passive Aggressive

For some years now my mother-in-law has been giving me some very ill chosen and pointed gifts for birthdays and Christmas. It started with a huge book on house keeping when we were first married, then progressed to things like cleaning implements such as a broom and dusters. To begin with I thought I would ignore it and perhaps the behaviour would wear off in time, but last year she gave me a book on child-rearing, and this year a book on dieting. It upset me so much. Should my husband have a word?

Homeowners with a mortgage due for its annual review this week will see their monthly payments drop again now that the Euribor is set to end July at a new historic low. The Eurozone interest rate, upon which mortgages in Spain are based, will end the month on -0.282 percent, breaking the record low set in March 2018 of 0.191 percent. From then until March this year, the Euribor continued to rise, but only very slightly and remained in negative figures. It has now been in negative for 41 consecutive months and no interest rate rise has been put into place since 2011.

No genuine lottery organisation would ask you to send money to release more funds, so do please be careful. Unless you remember entering the Australian lottery and buying a ticket, I am afraid this does sound like a scam. I too have received these types of emails and I imagine everyone else does. Please don’t send money to anyone you don’t know, and especially someone who contacts you via the internet out of the blue. There are so many dishonest people out there, and the creation of the internet has spawned many of them. In this case, your friend was being a good friend!

This is called being ‘passive aggressive‘. Giving someone an unsuitable gift can be a person’s way of putting in the boot, without actually having to say anything. You have two choices; your husband can speak frankly with his mother, telling her you know what she is doing, or you can call time on gift-giving as a whole - say you are only going to be buying for the children in the family now - you don’t want to receive any more gifts, and you think everyone else should do the same.

Last year, homeowners in Spain were, in many cases, starting to consider switching to fixed-rate mortgages due to the very tiny but steady rise in the Eurozone interest rate which experts had been warning of for some time. Many feared it would rocket to its highest-ever level, which was 5.393 percent and reached in July 2008- but the Central European Bank (BCE) has never introduced

a sharp hike and has long been keeping rates down to aid growth in the common currency area. Its chairman Mario Draghi had been talking about a possible slight increase after the summer, but in March he announced there would be no plans to do so until at least the year 2020 due to a weakening in the Eurozone economy. Some of the daily rates seen in July were fairly drastic drops – on 24th, it fell to -0.321 percent and remained below -0.3 percent for seven days. It has not risen to 0 percent since February 2016, when it first fell into negative figures. This time last year, the Euribor closed July on -0.18 percent, meaning mortgages due for their annual revision now will see a saving of approximately €4.50 a month based upon a loan of €100,000 over a 25-year term.

A figure and loan term such as this would typically involve monthly repayments last July of €368.74, but a review of it this month would see these fall to €364.24. But even if the Euribor shows signs of rising, mortgage holders in Spain would not need to rush to apply a fixed rate. Unlike in the UK, where the central bank interest rate on the day the monthly repayment is due applies – leaving quotas constantly open to fluctuation on a variable-rate mortgage – in Spain, repayments are adjusted annually. This means that if the Euribor starts to rise, homeowners have a full 12 months between reviews to decide what to do.

Political instability in Spain takes a toll on global image Political instability in Spain is hurting its global image. The country has fallen from 25th to 27th place on the Good Governance Index, compiled by the MESIAS project with support from España Global (or Global Spain), a state agency working to monitor and improve the country’s image abroad. The index ranks countries in six different areas: control of corruption, government effectiveness, regulatory quality, rule of law and voice and accountability. Spain fell in all parameters from 2016 to 2017 except for rule of law, where it moved up one place to 26th spot. But the most pronounced fall was in the area of political stability, where Spain fell from 33rd to 40th position on the list of 145 countries. The study is based on World Bank data from 2017, which is the latest year available, and does not take into account the recent failed investiture bid of acting Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez of the Socialist Party, or his successful no-confidence motion of June 2018. According to José Maria Cubillo, a doctor in economic and business studies at the Autonomous University of Madrid and the leader of the MESIAS project, the drop can be attributed to the crisis in

Catalonia, where an independence movement has divided the region, and to the repeat elections in 2016. “What’s worrying is that Spain has fallen in five of the six parameters that are measured, and more importantly, there is a continual drop in good governance since the index began 12 years ago,” he explains. In 2005, Spain came in 20th place on the world ranking but today it is ranked 27th. In control of corruption, the country has fallen from 18th position to 32nd, and in government efficiency, it is ranked 23rd, down from 17th. “Spain is still a world leader when it comes to good governance, within the first quartile [of the list], but it continues to follow a downward trend, and if this path continues, it could fall behind its EU neighbours,” warns Cubillo. According to the study, New

Zealand has the best government in the world. Five EU countries (Finland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Denmark and Germany) are in the top five, and another 13 are within the top 20. Cubillo believes the sevenpoint drop in political stability reflects “a certain dissatisfaction” of Spaniards towards the political class. “What the data tells us is that there is a feeling that things are not going well. Instability causes uncertainty and inhibits people when it comes time to make long-term decisions,” he explains. Spaniards’ opinion of their government’s ability to control corruption has dropped in recent years, reaching its worst point in 2017 with the trial in the so-called Gürtel case, the largest probe into political corruption in Spain’s democratic history. Confidence in government effectiveness and regulatory quality have also steadily fallen.

Spain’s BBVA under formal in vestigation in vast spying case Spain’s second-largest bank, BBVA, has been placed under formal investigation by the country’s high court, the Audiencia Nacional, as part of a far-reaching spying probe known as the Villarejo case. The case is named after José Manuel Villarejo, a former police commissioner who is believed to be at the heart of an espionage network spanning two decades’ worth of phone taps, undercover recordings and other invasions of privacy against scores of politicians, business leaders, judges and journalists. As part of one of the 10 separate probes that make up the sprawling Villarejo case, High Court Judge Manuel GarcíaCastellón has placed BBVA under investigation for alleged bribery, disclosure of secrets and corrupt business practices, in line with prosecutors’ requests. The bank is thought to have employed the services of a company run by Villarejo to secretly spy on rivals and on officials from the construction giant Sacyr, which launched an unsuccessful takeover bid for BBVA in 2004. Comisiones Obreras, the bank’s main union, has accused former chairman Francisco González of being “the main person responsible for the bank’s loss of reputation” and asked to

sever “any formal ties” with him. The bank’s current chairman, Carlos Torres, said in a note that his priority is “to clear up the facts.” In their written request to the judge, prosecutors held that “BBVA hired and made illicit payments to a company named Cenyt, whose owner was Villarejo, affecting several sensitive areas of the bank and various executives for a prolonged period of time.” Prosecutors want to probe whether BBVA hired Cenyt to spy on individuals with the goal of obtaining information about Sacyr, the construction giant that tried to push away former chairman Francisco González in 2004 and 2005. Villarejo, who has been in pretrial custody since November 2017, worked informally for the bank for 13 years, between 2004 and 2017, during which time he earned around €10 million. Prosecutors have reached these conclusions after analysing paper and digital documents

seized from Villarejo in November 2017, as well as material contributed by BBVA. The decision to investigate the lender itself comes on top of an earlier move against eight current and former bank executives. While there are no prison terms for legal entities, an unfavorable verdict could carry hefty financial penalties. Money making Former police commissioner José Manuel Villarejo allegedly ran a lucrative business on the side for years, selling sensitive information to wealthy clients as leverage against their rivals and enemies. He apparently had a network of “moles” working for him at banks, telecommunications companies and even the Tax Agency; these employees provided him with phone records, bank accounts and tax returns containing confidential information about his own clients’ targets. Although he has been in pretrial custody since November 2017, Villarejo is thought to have ordered a trickle of recent leaks to the media, all of which have caused embarrassment to several high-profile individuals, including former Spanish King Juan Carlos I, and Justice Minister Dolores Delgado.

Staying safe with S.A.C. Security and safety go hand in hand in today’s busy and dangerous world which is why the almost forgotten trade of Locksmithing is now viewed with the same high regard as any other trade. The world is rosy until the moment arrives when you find your business or home has been burgled or your keys are lost or stolen. This is where S.A.C. (locks and keys specialist) comes to help out with fuss and little or no disruption to your home or business. S.A.C. set up business on the Costa Blanca over 21 years ago and in that time the company has grown extensively. The region of Alicante and especially Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa was host to a small number of holiday makers but mainly consisted of tiny fishing village where security was not an issue. With the massive construction boom over the last number of years, coupled with growth in tourism, the area has become a metropolis with towns and urbanisations blending together. Tourism is one of the biggest businesses on the Costa Blanca and with the cheap and regular flights from Britain and Northern Europe, this area has become home to thousands of expats. Many retire gracefully to experience the laid back easy way of life but despite the benefits of a life of relaxation, expats do need to be aware of the importance of a good security system. S.A.C. offers a vast range of services from changing locks, opening doors, installing safes and security alarms, keyless entry systems, electric gates

and even remote house entry systems. They have an excellent reputation for fast efficient service and are members of the European Locksmiths Association and registered with Urge 24. They are legally registered and recognised by insurance companies. They offer services over an extensive area from North Costa Blanca (Denia, Benidorm) to as far south as La Manga and Cartagena. S.A.C. told the Costa Blanca People, “We are not on a mission to try to terrorise you into hiring us but sometimes the sun, easy way of life, not to mention the odd vino or sangria makes us a wee bit lax in our safety habits.” So take the best advice from S.A.C. and let your daily motto be “practice safety and security daily” However, if you do happen to lose your keys, double lock your safe, get burgled, need a new alarm or security system fitted, S.A.C. are only a phone call away. Strictly Come Dancing 2019 has announced footballer David James, comedian Chris Ramsey and EastEnders' Emma Barton are the stars confirmed for lineup... but One Show guest host Stacey Dooley messes up the big reveal. The announcement kicked off Strictly's annual hype, which sees the latest roster of contestants slowly unveiled across the month of August. Footballer David James, comedian Chris Ramsey and EastEnders actress Emma Barton all appeared on The One Show, where Stacey Dooley and Matt Baker were in charge of the announcement. David was first to be revealed, but Stacey was heard chattering about him in the background while Strictly announcer Alan Dedicoat drummed up the suspense, somewhat ruining the moment. The news comes hours after broadcaster Iain Lee let slip wrongly that the first three stars to be revealed were going to be Sam Allardyce, Jamie Laing and Anneka Rice. Other names floating around include Line Of Duty's Adrian

Dunbar, Boyzone singer Keith Duffy, broadcaster Louis Theroux, footballer Peter Crouch and RuPaul's Drag Race UK judges Michelle Visage and Alan Carr. Katie Price 'set for fresh row with ex-husband Peter Andre as she refuses to do drug tests'... despite taking cocaine 'weekly' for a six-month period. She admitted in February that she was taking cocaine 'weekly for about half a year.' And, five months later, Katie Price, 41, is now reportedly facing a fresh row with exhusband Peter Andre, 46, as she is refusing to take hair strand drugs tests. According to a report, the glamour model has told friends she doesn't need to take the tests because her life is back on track. Love Island winners Amber and Greg DIDN'T apply to be on the show as it's revealed only six of the Islanders were chosen through the general application process. Just 17 percent of this year's participants came

through general application, while 83 percent were picked by the ITV2 casting team or by professional agents. 85,000 applied for this series and the show featured 36 contestants, including the occupants of Casa Amor who didn't make it into the main villa. Twenty-four were found by the Love Island casting team, six came via professional agents and just six came from general applications. MPs on the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport committee investigating reality TV had queried how many contestants had been approached by the casting team Cristiano Ronaldo sells £2.3M secluded hillside mansion to Portugal team-mate Pepe... but the Juventus star loses £1.25m on the home he bought in 2012. The secluded property is hidden away in Portugal's only national park. Ronaldo's generosity is highlighted in that he 'took a £1.25m hit on the sale'

Pride of Spain Awards 2019 Now in its thirteenth year, the Costa Blanca People’s Pride of Spain Awards celebrates ordinary people who do extraordinary things, with nominees reflecting the core value of giving for the good of other people, and the community at large here on the Costa Blanca. Once you decide what category your nominee fits into you can nominate someone - a family member, a colleague, a community member or even someone you respect and admire from afar - who you feel deserves recognition for what they do or have achieved. At the heart of the Costa Blanca People’s Pride of Spain Awards is Costa Blanca People boss, Claire Richards, who started the original concept and continues to drive the initiative with her hard work and commitment. Claire told us, “When we launched the Costa Blanca People Pride of Spain Awards in 2007, our aim was simple – to unearth and celebrate our unsung heroes - the people who make this community great. It’s hard to believe that it is thirteen years later, and The Pride of Spain Awards have exceeded our wildest expectations. Each

year, we continue to be overwhelmed by the stories of selfless actions, courage, compassion and heroism. This is our chance to celebrate the fact that every day countless expat residents go out of their way to help their neighbours, often receiving little recognition for the extraordinary contributions they make to their communities. All of us know someone who deserves such recognition for their selfless actions. It might be your mum, your sibling, your cousin, your best friend, neighbour or school teacher.

I urge you to take a few minutes and nominate them for a Pride of Spain Award in 2019. On behalf of everyone at the Costa Blanca People, I would like to thank our readers, sponsors, political and community leaders who lend their ongoing support to the Costa Blanca People Pride of Spain Awards.” To nominate your local hero, simply go to http://www.costablancapeople.c om/pride-of-spain-awards/ and fill in the online form. If you don’t have internet access, simply call or visit our office (address on page 57) and we will do the rest for you.

Kelly and Dooley to make surprise appearance TV presenter Lorraine Kelly and broadcaster/ Strictly champion Stacey Dooley have pretty exciting day jobs, but the pair have landed a dream gig on the upcoming series of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK. The duo will guest appear in a special Snatch Game episode, which sees the competing drag queens impersonate famous faces. “We can officially Ru-veal that Lorraine Kelly OBE and Stacey Dooley MBE will join the Drag Race UK family for the iconic maxi-challenge Snatch Game,” the

BBC announced. Snatch Game is a parody of the show Match Game, or Blankety Blank as it was called here in the UK. The queens have to answer questions while impersonating their chosen celebrity and it's a fan favourite. The BBC went on to explain the credentials that make Lorraine and Stacey perfect additions to the inaugural Drag Race UK. “Lorraine Kelly, Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, is

well known as a LGBTQ icon in the UK, even being crowned an "Honourary Gay" at the 2015 Attitude Awards for her support for the LGBT community and being “One of Britain's cult gay icons"; so is the perfect choice for the cult game and Drag Race Classic, Snatch Game. “Stacey Dooley, Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, is the sweetheart of British TV and a wellknown broadcaster and documentary film-making and, of course, reigning queen of Strictly Come Dancing,” the

press release explained. Speaking about their guest appearances, Lorraine said: “It was hilarious! I had such good fun. I am in awe of every single one of the queens.” Stacey added: “I had the most incredible time. Didn’t know what to expect. They were magic all of them. So impressive. It was brilliant.” RuPaul’s Drag Race UK is the first UK adaption of the Emmy-winning franchise and global hit and will showcase the most fabulous queens the

country has to offer. Maisie Williams, Geri Horner, Jade Thirlwall, Michaela Coel, Andrew Garfield, Cheryl and Twiggy have previously been announced as special celebrity guest judges joining RuPaul and Michelle Visage for one episode each alongside Graham Norton and Alan Carr who will be on rotating judging duties. MNEK, AJ and Curtis Pritchard have been announced as Drag Race superstar coaches.

How to outsmart food labels Are your trips to the grocery store more like an episode of Supermarket Sweep than leisurely strolls down each aisle. It's so easy to run to the market, grab a few things somewhat blindly, and run out to do whatever errand you have next on your list. But when we're grabbing products without really looking at them, we might be doing ourselves (and whomever we're feeding or sharing food with) a disservice. There are various requirements and rules for many food agencies when it comes to food labels, but some of the rules have loopholes, so to speak, and others aren't regulated at all, which can allow manufacturers to put certain health food claims on products that are misleading. This is bad news for the consumer, who might trust that something that says "all-natural" or "fatfree" is 100 percent good for them. But you can take control of the situation by reading the labels carefully and educating yourself. Below is a list of common "healthy" phrases you might see on food packaging and asked a nutritionist what they actually mean.

salt and water). It may include the seal, and the label must include the name of the certifying agent. "Made with organic ingredients" can be listed on a label for a product that contains a minimum of 70 percent organic ingredients (excluding salt and water). The ingredients (up to three) must be labelled as certified organic ingredients, and the product can't claim or post a seal stating that it is an organic or 100 percent organic product.

Low-fat Anything classified as low-fat must have three grams or less of fat per serving, or less than 30 percent of calories coming from fat. But there's a catch to these low-fat foods. When fat has been removed, something else has been added into the product to preserve the taste of the food. Often it is sugar that is added in excess to make up for the taste. The calories can be around the same; however, you end up potentially loading up on other ingredients that are not as good for you. Don't be fooled that something is healthier for you just because it is low-fat. Experts suggest comparing the labels of low-fat packaged products and their full-fat versions to see how they stack up. Compare sodium, sugar, and differences between the number of ingredients listed on the food label. Foods low in saturated and trans fats are what the general public should keep an eye out for instead of total fat (because then they can be missing out on the health benefits of healthy fats like mono and polyunsaturated fatty acids!).

Organic Fortunately, the term "organic" is heavily regulated for the most part. "Overall, organic products have strict production and labelling requirements, and if a product wants to claim that it is organic or made up of organic ingredients on its display panel, most products need to be certified. There are some exceptions to this however, depending on the farm and level of operation, says the national Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. When shopping for organic products there are some tips and tricks that you can employ. These include looking at the ingredient list and keeping an eye out for the organic seal, which indicates it was certified by a regulatory body. There are some exceptions out there where a product does not need the stamp, so looking at the seal is an important step. Falsely representing a product as organic can put a company at risk of a penalty. But, concumers need to bear in mind that just because a product states that it is made up of organic ingredients, doesn’t mean that the whole product is 100 percent organic. There have been reports of some false organic claims, so it’s important for consumers to do some research to find trusted organic brands in addition to looking for name of the certifying agent that made the organic claim on the label. Additionally, shoppers can look to the Organic Labelling Standards for further education: "100 percent organic" can be used to label any product that contains 100 percent organic ingredients (excluding salt and water). It may include the seal, and the label must include the name of the certifying agent. "Organic" can be used to label any product that contains a minimum of 95 percent organic ingredients (excluding

All-natural This is where it gets dicey and it's crucial to read those labels. Currently, there is no formal or official definition for "natural," although the FDA has indicated it is working on defining the term. Right now, the FDA classifies natural as not having anything artificial or synthetic added or included in the food, but it does not define processing. There could be a lot of benefits to having a solid definition for 'natural' in the future. It may be a tool the industry can use to get the public to consume foods in their natural (whole, minimally processed) forms. In recent years, the industry has definitely gone and is going in that direction—and this is great for the public to be more aware of their nutritional health. However, right now since the term can be an unknown, a product that claims to be "all-natural" or have "natural flavours" or "natural ingredients" may not be good for you after all. Just because a product is made up of natural ingredients doesn't mean the product as a whole is natural or that the way it was processed was natural. These foods may still be made up of questionable additives, ingredients, and processing methods that are not the best for health or the environment.

Gluten-free This one made our list of "healthy" foods that could be scams because it could have binders and fillers that could upset your digestive health. Gluten-free foods aren't automatically healthy. It's important to note that it can compromise nutrition if the diet is not well balanced. When gluten is removed during food processing, manufacturers may add in more ingredients like salt, sugar, and other starches to add more flavour to the product. Also, packaged gluten-free products may be lower in fibre and B vitamins than glutencontaining grains. To find healthy gluten-free options, she recommends looking for products that are lower in sugar and have at least three grams of fiber per serving. Also, opt for items in their whole form (quinoa, brown rice, beans, sweet potatoes, vegetables).

And while this is a better alternative to drinking regular soda for people trying to manage their blood sugar, diet soda is still not a quality nutrition source. Artificial sweeteners are known to cause headaches while sugar alcohols can cause gastrointestinal issues like bloating, gas, and loose stools. More research is needed, but diet sodas can also affect your gut health. Additionally, these diet sodas include preservatives and artificial colouring, which aren't great for you. And on top of that, these diet products might even exacerbate your sweet tooth. Long-term consumption of diet products can change the taste buds. Artificial sweeteners bind more strongly than sucrose due to differing structures, which make them taste much sweeter to us. This can often stimulate the appetite and make us crave foods that are sweeter. So it's safe to say that you want to proceed with caution when consuming diet products. Unless medically advised, experts recommend limiting foods labelled as 'diet.' Focus on hydrating with water or sparkling unsweetened beverages and adding your own fresh fruit juice to it.

Multigrain

Diet Similarly to sugar-free products, diet products (like soft drinks) often contain artificial sweeteners and sugar alcohols.

First things first, multigrain is not the same thing as whole grain. Although multigrain crackers or bread might sound nutritious and good for you, it just means that they're made with more than one type of grain, and they might not be made with whole grains. Other similar terms that might be misleading include

"stone-ground," "100 percent wheat," and "seven-grain." "Whole grain" is the healthy term that really matters here—some products include barley, quinoa, oats, and brown rice. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, whole grain means that all parts of the grain were used (the bran, the germ, and the endosperm), whereas refined grains only contain the endosperm. Whole grains are known to keep your body healthy and give you glowing skin and shiny hair. They can also help reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers. When choosing a whole-grain product, look for ones that are high in fibre and with fewer added sugars, the Academy advises. When it comes to reading labels, look for ingredients you recognise and be wary of the ones you don't. Opt for whole foods instead of processed products. Being a smart shopper will pay off in the long-run for you health-wise— and plus, just knowing you've outsmarted clever packaging and marketing is a big plus.

Food myths we all believe A poll of 2,000 adults suggests that many people still believe a number of nutrition myths. Commissioned by the Love Fresh Berries campaign, a third of those polled agreed celery takes more calories to eat than it provides and people still believe eating carrots improves eye sight and fruit rots your teeth. Nicholas Marston, chairman of Love Fresh Berries, added: “There are so many food myths and misinformation around that it’s sometimes hard to know what is actually good for you and what we should be eating. Often the difference between truth and a myth can be somewhat unclear so it’s important to distinguish between them and get information from reputable sources, not hearsay.” Oranges are the best natural source of vitamin C Strawberries actually contain more Vitamin C than oranges (57mg/100g compared to 42mg/100g for easy peeler oranges). Just seven strawberries provide the recommended daily amount of Vitamin C which contributes to the normal function of the immune system along with the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Cooking fruit and vegetables reduces its nutritional value Cooking does destroy some

heat sensitive vitamins such as folate and Vitamin C. The longer that fruit or vegetables are exposed to heat, the more nutritional value they lose. However in some instances, health benefits are unlocked through cooking. Too much of any fruit rots your teeth Fruits which have a high acid content can damage the enamel of your teeth if eaten excessively. However, the sugar in most fruits will not rot your teeth. Carrots help you to see in the dark This is a myth but carrots do contain Vitamin A which is important for good vision. Eating celery burns more calories than you gain by eating it In reality there are no negative-calorie foods. Even though celery has low calories, high water density and high fibre, your body still doesn’t use as many calories to process it as there are in a celery stick. Organic fruit is healthiest There is a negligible nutritional difference between organic and non-organic fruit. Chocolate is an aphrodisiac There is limited evidence that

chocolate is an aphrodisiac as there are such small amounts of the substances which have an effect on desire in chocolate. Drinking fruit juice is as nutritious as eating whole fruit Whole fruit contains vital fibres and nutrients that are removed when juicing.

Man eats ‘world’s biggest breakfast' in 28 minutes A farm owner is claiming his English breakfast is the biggest in the world after he doubled the size of his previous big breakfast. Ted Phillips of Shepherd's Place Farm in Nottinghamshire has created an 135-item breakfast with 12-15 pieces of each component of the traditional breakfast. He has upped his breakfast

from the Terminator Two after diners were completing the meal too easily. His new one is called Terminator 3: Judgement Day, costs £20 and weighs over a stone. Despite its intimidating mass, professional competitive eater Kyle Gibson (known as Kyle v Food) has already defeated the beast, gobbling up the tray of

grub in just over 28 minutes. Most impressively perhaps is Karl, 20, still managed to find room to fit in a huge 10 scoop ice cream cone for afters. Where does he put it? Ted said anyone who completes the Terminator 3 in an hour will make the cafe's wall of fame and get breakfast free for a year.

Sparkling wines for summer fun Are you over poor-quality prosecco? Crying out for decent cava or champagne? Heard the chat about crémant and col fondo? Drinks experts and industry insiders have been whispering about the impending downfall of prosecco – the bottle we’re most likely to pop – for a few years, because the market has been flooded with so many stomachstrippingly terrible examples of the Italian fizz. Some have mooted a return to cava, which was popular in the 1980s and 1990s before suffering its own quality problems and falling out of favour...except here in Spain, of course. Searches for cava on waitrose.com have increased by 191 per cent this year compared with last. Cava sales at wine merchants Jeroboams have

doubled in three years. At Aldi, cava sales have more than doubled since 2012, with close to two million bottles sold in 2018, surpassing champagne. However, the retailer shifted 12 million bottles of prosecco last year. There’s also evidence we’re ready to experiment with different types of fizz, and there are many more around. Have you tried a crémant, moscato, franciacorta, pétillant naturel, or any of the many brilliant English fizzes on the market? How about a New World sparkling wine, prosecco col fondo, or grower champagne?

M&S customers are experimenting with different types of sparkling. Graham Beck rosé, a South African sparkling for £10, is selling almost double the volume as 2018. The Craft 3 Sparkling, an Australian blend, has seen sales soar by 72 per cent. Searches for crémant on Waitrose.com have increased by 80 per cent year on year. Searches for English sparkling have risen by 36 per cent.

Foods to keep hunger at bay Anyone who has ever tried (and failed) to lose weight through dieting or detoxing will usually agree that the constant feeling of hunger they felt was the biggest barrier to reaching their goal. Feeling hungry is, in fact, why most diets simply don't work long-term. We experience hunger when we don't consume enough calories, but the types of food we eat can also impact on how satisfied we feel after eating. Here we explore how the body controls our hunger levels, and what foods we can eat to prevent the hunger monster from striking. How your body recognises that it's full Satiety is the feeling of fullness after eating that suppresses the urge to eat for a period of time after a meal. Such feelings of fullness play an important role in controlling how much we eat. Many people believe that satiety is only determined by how full our stomachs feel after eating, but that is only part of the story. When we eat or drink, the food enters our stomach and intestines where it is digested and the nutrients are absorbed, and a series of signals are sent to the hunger/fullness centres of our brain. Hormones are then released in response to the nutrients as they enter the bloodstream, which trigger our bodies to recognise that we've had enough. This process generally occurs 1520 minutes after we experience a feeling of fullness in our stomachs. How long we feel full for after eating is determined by what and how much we eat, as well as internal factors such as our fat stores.

The types of foods that enhance fullness Research shows that enhanced satiety foods (those with an increased capacity to inhibit appetite in the period after eating) directly promote reduced food intake, and also help with healthy eating and weight management strategies, by lessening the effect of hunger on motivation and mood. The following factors impact on how filling a particular food is... The 'energy density' This is defined as the amount of energy (or calories) per gram of a particular food. Lower energy density foods provide less energy per gram of food, enabling you to eat more of them without consuming too many calories. Examples of low energy density foods include, fruit and vegetables and foods with a high water content such as soups and stews. Fibre content A fibre-rich diet is thought to promote satiety and weight management because it contains foods that have a low energy density, such as fruit and vegetables, which when eaten in the same quantities as high energy dense foods are equally as filling, but provide less calories. The way in which high fibre foods are digested also promotes satiety. Fibre slows down the emptying of the stomach, increases digestion time, and impacts on satiety hormone release- processes all associated with heightened sensations of fullness.

Protein content Studies show that foods high in protein seem to keep us fuller than foods high in carbohydrates or fat. Protein changes the levels of several satiety hormones, including ghrelin and GLP-1, which effect appetite. High protein foods include lean meat, fish, eggs, pulses, nuts, yoghurt and tofu. Glycaemic index (GI) GI is a ranking between 0 and 100 given to foods, describing how quickly their carbohydrates are digested and absorbed into the blood. Rather than higher GI foods like white bread and pasta, low GI choices like wholegrain bread and pasta, oats, and unsweetened yoghurt gradually release their energy and keep us feeling fuller for longer. Fat content Fat is also filling, however a word of caution as it is also very energy dense and excessive consumption can lead to weight gain. Furthermore, a diet high in saturated fats can negatively affect heart health. Choose foods that are high in heart healthy fats such as nuts (also high in protein) and avocado or drizzle a tablespoon of olive oil on a salad. How quickly you eat it It can take 15-20 minutes after food is first eaten, for the full range of satiety signals to reach the brain. Eating too fast therefore promotes over eating, as you may not recognise how full you are until you've eaten too much. Foods that keep you fuller for longer...

Potatoes Potatoes have a high water content, and contain moderate amounts of fibre and protein. Back in 1995 a scale called the 'Satiety Index' was developed, which ranked foods according to their ability to satisfy hunger- and potatoes came out top of the rankings. Potatoes should be eaten baked or boiled with their skins on to maximise the fibre content. Eggs Eggs are an excellent source of high-quality protein. A large egg contains around 6 grams of protein and includes all 9 essential amino acids. Eggs also ranked highly on the Satiety Index. Enjoy for breakfast on a slice of wholegrain or rye bread for added fibre. Bean soup Soups and broths have a high water content, which means they fill your stomach for very few calories. Chunky bean soups are also high in protein, fibre and resistant starch — a 'slow release' carb that keeps blood sugar levels steady. Extra-virgin olive oil Rich in oleic acid (a monounsaturated fat). The bio-active compound this contains is called OEA (derived from ingested oleic acid) and has been shown to increase satiety. Drizzle olive

oil onto your salads and vegetables to increase their fullness factor. Greek yoghurt Contains double the protein content of regular yoghurt, and is great option either at breakfast or as a snack to manage appetite levels. Top with fresh fruit and oats (also high on the Satiety Index) for added fibre and nutrients. Apples Rich in fibre (a medium sized apple contains about 4g fibre, 17% of your recommended daily intake) and a low glycaemic index. Combine with a tablespoon of proteinpacked peanut butter for a hunger-suppressing snack. Almonds A small handful (about 30g) of nuts is a satisfying snack to keep hunger at bay between meals, and when eaten with foods containing carbohydrates, they reduce the glycaemic index of the meal. Nuts are also a good source of protein and heart healthy fats.

How to get fuller lips without fillers Thanks in part to a certain new mom from Calabasas, who also has a penchant for colourful wigs and liquid lipstick, getting lip fillers is now about as pedestrian as having a facial in some beauty circles. While the cosmetic industry will surely thank her for the uptick in bookings, the truth is that naturally full lips have long been considered attractive. And the good news is that there are plenty of products and techniques you can try before resorting to the needle. First things first: hydration. Finding a lip balm that works for you is crucial — your lips actually look smaller when they're dehydrated. It's a weird analogy, but think of how a sponge shrinks as it's wrung out, then enlarges when it absorbs water again. Lip-balm preferences are seemingly as hardwired as being a morning or night person, so the best lip balm for you is whichever one you'll remember to apply. Terry's Baume de Rose is an expensive — but truly unrivalled — moisturiz¡sing pick, and Charlotte Tilbury's new Collagen Lip Bath is a

huge hit with lip lovers. Collagen doesn't perform topically in the same way it does subcutaneously, as the molecules are too big to penetrate the skin, so take that part of the name with a grain of salt. Either way, it's

excellent for hydrating, and contains peppermint extract to give a subtle plumping effect without the telltale burning sensation of a lip plumper. And about that burning sensation: The reason so many lip plumpers are painful to use is that they work by causing inflammation, which makes blood rush to the area. The irritation makes your body release chemicals like histamines and prostaglandin, which gives a temporary plumped effect. Quite often, they use the same

ingredients found in spicy dishes to harness those properties — which explains why your lips might look especially luscious post-spicy pad thai. Exfoliation has a similar effect. As well as removing dead skin cells, the stimulation of manually scrubbing will give you a short burst of added volume. You can buy a lip scrub for this, but many people find using lip balm on a cotton bud or a toothbrush just as effective. Now, all that's left is to find the perfect lipenhancing makeup. Use a lip liner that matches your lipstick closely, and sharpen it to a fine point. Draw ever so slightly over the edge of your lips, being especially careful around your Cupid's bow. Then, apply your lipstick. A classic makeup artist trick that really works is to apply gloss to the centre of your lips for a more 3D effect — clear is fine, and much more utilitarian than buying one coordinating gloss for every lipstick you own. A dot of highlighter on your Cupid’s bow can help enhance this effect, too. It might not be quite as dramatic as Kylie Jenner’s transformation — but it's an excellent, and needle-free, place to start.

Fitness trackers 'don't lead to major weight loss' Fitness trackers do not lead to major weight loss or lower blood pressure, according to new research. Researchers at the University of Florida have analysed six studies exploring the health benefits of wearable devices and found the fitness trackers appear to have "little benefit" when it comes to reducing blood pressure and cholesterol, or even helping people to lose a significant amount of weight. The devices do motivate people to exercise more, by reminding them to move during periods of inactivity, but it's not enough to significantly change someone's health, lead author Ara Jo said. The analysis found that the increased movement rarely lead to major changes in chronic disease outcomes among adults, at least when they used them without the assistance of a trainer or doctor. "The weight loss findings are pretty surprising," Jo said. "I thought that wearable devices would definitely help to lose weight, at some point, because they make people move, but apparently that is not the case. "They can motivate people to avoid a sedentary lifestyle, but that does not change people's lifestyle to be (adequately) active." The research team

focused on six studies, involving a total of 1,615 people, and four of them used the Fitbit while two used a mobile phone app. Only one of the studies showed significant weight loss among participants who used wearable devices, and none of them showed a significant reduction in cholesterol or blood pressure. However, Jo made it clear that the gadgets are still helpful in encouraging people to be active. She added, "But someone who expects to see significant effects like weight loss or clinical outcome improvements, it won't be as useful." The findings were published in the American Journal of Medicine.

Staying cool during summer runs Nothing quite beats summer running here in Spain; clear blue skies, warm temperatures, longer days and plenty of promenades, beaches and countryside to utilise. But when the mercury starts edging higher, it’s important not to get too hot-headed and to hit the trails without some preparations - this is essential, not only from a performance perspective, but also for the sheer enjoyment of the activity. Just a five per cent drop in hydration can result in a 20 per cent drop in performance. Therefore, it is well worth considering the following suggestions before putting on your trainers and heading out for your summer run. Hydration You’re going to be sweating a lot more than usual, so up your fluid intake before, during and after running, as dehydration will result in performance drop off, slower recovery, as well as possibly headaches and/or cramps. But, the answer isn’t to simply drink more and more water, indeed over consumption can dilute your body’s sodium concentration and lead to hyponatremia (aka water overload) in more extreme

instances. Instead, try to replace both lost water and salts in a balanced way, the quantities of which vary from person to person. By drinking the right amount of water and salts (add an electrolyte powder into your water bottle), or popping some gels in your pocket - this will keep you at peak performance. Clothing Wear lightweight clothing made from synthetic fabrics, these will help wick sweat away from your body keeping you cooler. If it’s likely to be sunny, SPF rated fabrics - which are quite commonplace now in running sportswear - are a great option (particularly so if you’re a little lazier on the suncream application front). Accessories A light mesh cap will help keep the sun off your face as well as helping with cooling, and sunglasses are a must too. Hydration packs - or vests - are very popular in the running community, and for good reason. They can weigh as little as 90 grams, yet with a bladder and soft water bottles you can carry around 2L of water, plus

items like your phone, sun cream etc - so you can head out for hours at a time whilst being totally self sufficient. Suncream Apply sun protection on all exposed skin, particularly those sensitive areas that see less of the sun, such as the backs of your knees or neck. UV levels are high in the summer so use SPF30 as a minimum, and consider trying out one of the brilliant single application sun creams if you know you’re a bit lazy on this front - they’ll protect you for up to 10 hours without the need to re-apply. Exertion Levels The old adage of listening to your body has never been truer when running on a hot summer’s day. Factors such as your core temperature rising too high, dehydration and loss of salts are very much in the mix, and once you’ve overdone it, it’s hard to get going again. So lower your usual pace, even consider dropping down to a speedy walk for a couple of minutes every mile or so if you’re starting to feel it, just whilst you recompose yourself.

iPhone sales down, but Apple profits up

Tech giant Apple posted a small gain in sales for the third quarter of the year. While iPhone sales fell, the company made up the difference in higher revenues in services such as its software store and music service. Sales climbed 1% to $53.8bn (£44.3bn), while net profit fell 13% to $10bn. The company stemmed some of its drop in sales to China. The results beat Wall Street estimates and shares gained 3.5% to $216.10 in afterhours trading. For first time since 2012, iPhone sales represent less than half of company's overall sales. Sales of the device are down by $741m on this period last year. In China, sales fell 4% to $9.16bn, after a drop of 22% in the second quarter. Exchange rates have made the iPhone expensive for Chinese customers. Apple forecast sales of between $61bn and $64bn for the final three months of its financial year.

Dave via email asks: Hello Aunty. I have had my desktop for several years (bought over from UK) and I am still on windows 7, I know I need to get with it and update to Windows 10 but it does all I ask of it. One of the problems I have is it will not store any password that I enter. It used to before I came over to Spain. Do I finally chuck it out the window and upgrade or can you help me to keep it operating for another 20 years? Aunty Says: Hello Dave. This is more likely an issue with your browser (Chrome, Firefox or Internet Explorer) rather than Windows itself so maybe do a test and install the latest version. All browsers have an option in their settings regarding saving and managing passwords so have a look to see if something has been set to specifically never remember password. You can normally bring up the settings page from the 3 dots in the top right corner (Chrome) or a cog icon (Firefox). You may be able to upgrade your machine to Windows 10 so before it ends

up in the swimming pool give Phil at eNET Computers a ring on 687362844 and see what options you have. Michael via email asks: Can you please recommend software to scan documents and translate them to English? Thank you. Aunty Says: Hello Michael. I’ve always found the scanning software that comes with the printer is great for scanning, and then run the results through Google Translate. The basic principle is to scan the document and rather than save it as a picture (jpg etc) choose to save as a Word (or any text document format). This is known as Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and it is the quite clever function of the scanner to be able to recognise letters and create a editable document that you can save and work on. Mary from Orihuela asks: Hi Aunty, I read an article a while back about internet speeds so had a look on www.speedtest.net but I´m not sure I understand the results. My download speed was 4.44Mb and the upload speed was 0.71Mb. Firstly what is the difference between upload and download speeds and should they be so far apart? Aunty Says: Hello Mary. The download speed is the speed you are able to read data from the Internet, (i.e. loading webpages, opening emails or watching TV or videos) and 4.44Mb per second is low but sadly average for Spain. The upload speed is the speed you can transfer data onto the Internet and 0.71 is a bit low, but again is quite normal for Spain. A low upload speed may cause problems when you are using a webcam during Skype etc. Any questions then do email me at auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com. See you all next week.

August exodus Coast supports calls is here for toll abolition

Thursday saw the start of another holiday exodus in Spain, with more than 2.9 million cars on the roads at any point between the early evening and midnight on 1st August. Over half of these – 1.55 million – were on the east coast, of which half a million were on the roads in the province of Alicante and 800,000 in that of Valencia, or more than the equivalent of one car for every inhabitant of Valencia city. Many firms in larger cities and inland areas shut for the whole of August, which is when workers take their annual leave, and even where companies continue to operate, August remains the most popular month of the year for holidays. The vast majority of those who do not have a beach on the doorstep will not stay at home for their break, but instead will head to coasts, to cooler countryside locations, or to urbanisations with swimming pools. A high number of Spaniards own second homes they use for holidays and, when these are nearby, move into for the whole of the summer; in some cases their holiday homes are only a couple of kilometres from where they live the rest of the year. The result of all this is that 1st August continues to be one of the busiest traffic days of the year, and anyone planning

on making a journey by road, especially long-distance, was strongly advised to allow extra time. Motorways and major highways heading coastwards, and secondary roads leading to beach towns, are traditionally among the most gridlocked every August 00and extra police officers and resources have been employed. Speed traps and breathalysing points are likely to be increased across August to ensure driver and passenger safety, and will target back roads as well as major trunk routes as a deterrent for those who think they can escape the controls by taking a short-cut. Helicopters will be patrolling the skies to watch out for speeding, dangerous driving, mobile phone use at the wheel, and occupants not wearing seatbelts or with children not in the property type of seats. Over August as a whole, a total of 47 million cars are expected to be on the road – one for every inhabitant in Spain – of which 20 percent will be in the eastern provinces of Castellón, Valencia, Alicante, Murcia and Albacete. Once that first rush of the month is over – typically by around midnight last Thursday – the next major exodus is due on the evening of Wednesday, 14th August, since the following day is a national public holiday.

This weekend OC Avanza business organisation in Orihuela Costa added its voice to that of Eduardo Dolón, Mayor of Torrevieja in calling for the abolition of the AP7 tolls at La Zenia and Los Montesinos. Raymond Kearney, president of OC Avanza pointed out the return journey toll cost to Alicante Airport is almost 16e. The not-sopopular alternative is to spend a long time in traffic jams on the N332, this is quite unbearable in the summer heat and coupled with the long queues at check-in and at security checks. The whole stress element of travelling to or from Orihuela Costa from Alicante Airport is turning people off holidaying or buying property in Orihuela Costa. To add to the congestion many vehicles travelling on the AP7 leave the motorway between Quesada and Campoamor clogging up the N332 every day. Most Orihuela Costa businesses rely

Eduardo Dolón

on tourism. The many excellent restaurants and bars need tourists to keep their businesses afloat and to give their staff work continuity. Six years ago, OC Avanza organised a petition calling for the abolition of the toll at La Zenia. Over 7,000 people signed the petition and it was presented to the then mayor of Orihuela. Political party CLR presented a motion at the Orihuela Town Hall Plenary meeting, the motion was approved by all political parties except Claro, who voted against the abolition of the toll. Visitors from the five closest neighbouring cities Cartagena, Murcia, Orihuela, Elche and Alicante are put off by the expensive or difficult journeys to visit Orihuela Costa. Most residents of these five cities rarely travel to Orihuela Costa to shop, eat out or even to spend a day on the beach. AP7 tolls from Girona to Alicante will end this year but the two tolls in a 10km stretch that

effects businesses, residents and visitors to Orihuela Costa are set to continue for a further 28 years. Kearney said “Orihuela Costa’s commerce and hospitality sector are badly affected by these abusive tolls as well as residents who have to face traffic jams every day on the N332”. The organisation is grateful also to the Orihuela Chamber of Commerce president Mario Martinez for publicly speaking out over the weekend about abolishing the AP7 tolls. Likewise, the Cabo Roig Business Association whose very livelihood is under severe threat from up to 100 illegal traders selling illegal goods on a daily basis also wholeheartedly support the removal of the AP7 tolls. A spokesperson for the association said “We are under fire on all fronts, we pay our taxes, we employ hundreds of people but the local authorities don’t support us, we hope they listen soon”.

First Electric Scooter Registered With questions still being raised over whether the more powerful electric scooters can be registered for use in Spain, N332 took one along to have the initial ITV inspection carried out. The vehicle we used was provided by mobility experts MABEQ, based on the Orihuela Costa and offering the sale and hire of all kinds of mobility vehicles from those needed by people with restricted movement, to those looking for a modern transport solution like these powered scooters. We have to raise a point of caution here as not all of the vehicles can be registered as they must be of an approved type. The scooter provided by MABEQ is an approved one and comes with a European certificate of compliance. Because the vehicle was brand new and needed registered, we were unable to drive it to the test centre, and so instead we transported it secured in a van to the ITV test centre in San Javier. The inspectors at ITV San Javier first checked the documentation, and that the vehicle was suitable for registration,

confirming the serial number along with the model. Once confirmed as being suitable, the initial test was carried out, where the inspectors check everything from lights and indicators to brakes, along with a long list of technical details, just as they would for a petrol powered moped. The vehicle was successful in all safety checks and was issued with the ITV card. Now, whoever purchases this particular vehicle simply has to go to Trafico with ITV card to get the Permiso de Circulacion, the log book, and then purchase the number plate in a "tienda de recambios". This is the first scooter of this type to have been registered in the area and is thanks to the collaboration between N332 and businesses like MABEQ and ITV San Javier to improve road safety and provide accurate information to help road users, such as in this case by providing facilities in the process to register the scooters. Irrespective of the physical characteristics of the electric vehicle, if it can exceed 25 kilometres per hour, or

exceeds 1,000W in power, then it must be of a type approved for use in Spain, and must be registered. That means it will then be given a number plate the same as a moped, and will be issued with an ITV card once an initial inspection is carried out, as well as vehicle log book once registered. The electric scooter must then undergo an ITV test once it is 3 years old, then every 2 years, just like a moped. The person riding the scooter must also be in possession of a full licence for a moped (category AM), for which a car licence (category B) is sufficient, and must also have mandatory insurance. The rider is also obliged to wear a crash helmet, which must be a type approved for riding a moped or motorbike, not just a cycle helmet, and can only ride the scooter on the road, and lights are of course mandatory, as well as other physical minimum standards which will be checked and approved in the original process. You can find out more at mabeq.com and itvsanjavier.com and follow both businesses on Facebook.

Happy Birthday DGT To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Direcciรณn General de Trรกfico (DGT), Correos has released a commemorative postage stamp. The stamp, which was presented this week to the Director General of Traffic, Pere Navarro by the President of Correos, Juan Manuel Serrano, features the DGT logo and is symbolic of the road network. The stamp is based on a solid black background, on which several lines extend as wakes that simulate the roads, which thanks to the varnish applied on the stamp, have phosphorescent tones. The number 60 is also drawn with lines representing these roads where more than 40 million vehicles travel each year. The stamp is a limited edition and will only have a print run of 180,000 copies, although you can buy one for the standard price of 0.70 euro per unit, according to Correos. Correos has been investigating

improvements to their collaboration with the DGT. Since the start of 2018, the post office was the designated collection point for the new eco-labels for vehicles, and since June of this year it is now possible for replacement driving licence applications to be processed through many main post offices. Under the agreement, since 24 June, 2,400 post offices across the country can

process applications for replacement licences in the event of loss, damage or deterioration. Since 1959, the DGT has been tasked with ensuring safety on Spanish roads. As indicated by the motto of its 60th anniversary, 'Advancing with Safety', during the six decades, the DGT has been adapting to the needs of traffic in Spain, always ensuring the safety of drivers, pedestrians and other road users.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

I’ll tell you this for free, folks – football is BACK. I’ll give you this bit of insight for nothing as well – if Mohamed Salah could finish he’d be one hell of a player. Mo Salah had almost as many chances as he had days off between the end of the AFCON tournament and yesterday’s kick-off in the Community Shield – and he missed them. All of them. Apart from the penalty in the penalty shoot out, Salah managed to miss from five yards, hit the post, see one deflected just over and watch various other clear-cut chances come and go. Liverpool looked like they might still be a little jetlagged from their various pre-season jaunts as Peppy G’s Man City settled quickly into the kind of passing rhythm that will have us

wondering at what point exactly they will self-combust in Europe. Guardiola had spoken before the traditional curtain-raiser at Wembley, saying how he was not prepared to gamble winning a hat-trick of Premier League titles by gambling everything on the Champions League this season. And, as a result, you could see he was taking the first title of the season very seriously – managing to become the first manager ever to be shown the yellow card at Wembley for moaning about someone getting fouled. City led early, Raheem Sterling getting one of those chances that he loves – the ones from three yards where he doesn’t have to think about it. Moments later, he was moved from goalscoring centre-forward back to the wing as Leroy Sane limped out of the action – probably upsetting fans of Bayern Munich more than the City faithful. For me, one of the more interesting observations from the game was the

realisation that Kyle Walker is slowly morphing into Pablo Zabaletta. That will please West Ham fans no end as he’ll probably end replacing the Argentine full-back at the Athletics Stadium in the next couple of years. I also concluded that I liked the oneoff kit being worn by City at Wembley – it was a plain affair, (unlike the match, ahem), shorn of the billboard advertising of Etihad Airways. Given all the pallava over the summer about a certain Irish bookmakers giving the soul of football back to the fans by not having their logo on the front of the shirts they sponsor, it was nice to see this slightly more subtle nod to history as the shirt was designed to start City’s 125 year birthday celebrations. And, if their celebrations go on anything like my Nan’s 125th, it is going to be a long season. Despite Mo Salah managing to miss anything coming his way, Liverpool did manage to find an equaliser and take one of the better Community Shield matches in living memory to penalties. Joel Matip headed home Virgil’s cross – the defenders showing the attackers what was meant to happen in Claudio Bravo’s area. And so to penalties – Allison did eventually go the right way for one put must have been worried about hurting his hands, so allowed it to go straight through them. Other than that, he played safe from injury by throwing himself out of the way at every opportunity. Bravo, sensing this might be his only

game this season, took it far more seriously and went as far as saving one – meaning City’s 100% strike rate saw them start the defence of their ‘quadruple’ in style. Pep, mate. It’s still not a trophy. But well done, that was very entertaining. Up at Old Trafford, where they were no doubt reminiscing when they used to take part in the Community Shield, it looks like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has finally got his man. Before we all start pointing and laughing at the price United are paying, it’s worth remembering that Pep himself wanted to sign Leicester’s Harry Maguire – though, admittedly, he fell of his chair in hysterics when he heard that they were quoting £80m saying ‘only Ed Woodward would be stupid enough to pay that!’ And, guess what? Solskjaer is also ‘confident’ that Paul

Your week in sport One of the frustrating things about a Monday deadline for this newspaper is that by the time you read this you’ll know the result of the first Ashes Test. Ha, what am I saying? I am tapping away here with a couple of overs left on day four and England need to score 398 to win – which, to the completely uninitiated means that they have to bat all of day five to save themselves from being 1-0 down. But, you never know – you might be reading this and scoffing at me as Jimmy Anderson defended like a hero with one working calf to frustrate the Australians and earn us a not-very-deserved draw. From where I am sitting, it’s not that England haven’t played well at Edgbaston. Far from it – they’ve been decent considering they have been playing with ten men since the morning session.

It’s just that they haven’t got Steve Smith batting at four – we’ve got Joe Denly and I reckon even you can spot the difference. Jimmy Anderson, who passed a fitness test on his calf injury having been rested in the Ireland match, pulled up lame after bowling four overs on the first morning – you guessed it, his calf. As a result, England were a bowler down for rest of the match – not that it would have made much difference the way Smithy returned to the Test arena. This was Smith’s first Test match since returning from his ban for that instance – well, given how little the ball was swinging for England I would imagine one or two of them wondered whether they could get away with a bit of sandpaper in their pocket. Oh, I know, I know – we are England, we’d never consider stooping to such lows to gain an advantage. We’d rather keep asking the umpires to change the ball just because we can’t get it to swing legally. I have a sneaky suspicion I am going to see more of Steve Smith than my family over the next month or so – the guy just doesn’t know how to get out. England’s best chance against Smith was for the umpires to drop another one of their

Pogba will at least be physically present at United this coming season, if not mentally. Real Madrid still haven’t shown Ole the colour of their money and, as a result, we are in for another 12 months of watching Pogba sulk his way through 90 minutes on Thursdays and Sundays. That’s right, don’t forget Manchester United are in the Europa League. OGS also confirmed that Ashley Young has been named club captain for the 2019/20 season saying that whenever he is on the pitch, Young will wear the armband – and United fans are hoping that becomes a grand total of zero times he wears the armband. Finally, today – Everton have signed a very good striker. They’ve shelled out £30m for Juventus’ Italy international Moise Kean – get ready to file this one under ‘transfers that looked really good on paper’.

umpteen clangers in this match and for Australia to have no reviews left to save him – the only problem was, with so many decisions being wrong in the first place all the reviews were remaining. There’s a reason this series is being sponsored by Specsavers. Even if England had been able to sneak one past Smith’s edge and hit the stumps, there is no guarantee the bails would have come off. Joe Root, batting at three for England, survived yet another example of the bails being superglued to the stumps this summer – the wicket still shaking as the third umpire deduced that Root had missed it by a mile. Not that it made any difference – Steve Smith still had to bat again. A hundred in each innings somewhat overshadows the fact that Rory Burns had clearly learned something from watching Jack Leach bat against the Irish. Burns got his maiden Test ton and he needs to do exactly the same on Monday to become an instant Ashes hero. At least one left-hander in the side can bat, hey Moeen? Ali is a player that I love but he needs to be dropped for his own sanity right now – and there’s even an argument to say that he and Jonny Bairstow could so with a short, sharp

spell on the sidelines. Ali and Bairstow combined average about 90 less than the Australian number four in the last 18 months (and Smith hasn’t been allowed to play). And it is also time for Bairstow to decide whether he wants to concentrate solely on his Test batting or continue as a wicketkeeperbatsman – the reserve wicketkeeper-batsman. The final oddity from me as Australia take the lead in this summer’s Ashes/we head to the next match all square (delete where applicable) was the sight of Jofra Archer on the field as 12th man. If we are resting him and saving him for the rest of the series, why on earth are we risking him on the field chasing down lost causes? Oh, and I really like Steve Smith – let’s not hang him for making a silly mistake. Admire the fact that we’d give up our entire top order to have a bat like him.

A sadly depleted turnout, due to members returning to the dubious delights of the English Summer and others on flying visits, left only five competing for El Plantio 2's monthly medal. After two years of trying to win the coveted trophy, Barry Walthall was finally successful with a bogey free round.

This particular Friday was a good day for high scores, which also brings with it a few handicap cuts. The Venue was Font De Llop which played well and was in excellent condition, and the weather also helped as it was not scorching hot. We had a guest and a couple of new members to look after but there was no need as they walked away with most of the honours between them. The results on the day were, nearest the pins on the par 3's Nikki Ead, Mark Kinsella, Alex Bolton and Kevin Hufton who also was nearest the pin in two. Best front nine Mark Kinsella, best back Nikki Ead, best guest Mark Kinsella who also scooped

the two's pot. Gold division winner was Jim Mc Carthy (36) silver and overall winner with promotion to the gold division was Alex Bolton (40). We returned to our new bar on El Raso, where we actually formed the society approx. 8 years ago and which is now called O' Briens for the presentation where our captain, George Marshall Deane presented the prizes and also won the football card. Our next outing is on the 9th of August at Roda, anyone wishing to join us for this or any other fixture please email us at rubysgolf@yahoo.co.uk
