efforts of the medics who managed to recover his vital signs, died a few days later at the General Hospital of Alicante where he was transferred by helicopter. Avery, of Irish nationality, spent the holidays on the coast with his mother, his two sisters and his grandparents and his father was also expected to arrive at the resort this week. The investigation indicates that the tragedy was an accidental death when he wondered of whilst the family had breakfast. They realised that the little one was not there when they finished eating and rushed to find him, but the little boy had made his way the communal pool of the urbanization. Neighbours found the child floating in the water and, when the Local Police arrived, they found the child "very cold", according to municipal sources. A Basic Life Support ambulance was sent to the area with a doctor from the health centre of Orihuela Costa, who gave the first medical attention to the child, until the Samu doctors arrived from Guardamar and the medical helicopter. After performing resuscitation for more than an hour, the boy recovered his vital signs and was transferred in a very serious condition to the hospital where he was fighting for his life for several hours, until his heart stopped beating the following morning. Family members are receiving consular help and the proceedings for this accidental death have been referred to the guard court of Orihuela. In Torrevieja, the second of the deaths due to drowning was a 60-yearold swimmer who died in the waters off Los Locos beach. The lifeguards came to rescue him, but when they

reached him he was already dead. The man was at sea, at the height of the ‘Longline Curve’. According to the Civil Guard, a Maritime Rescue boat from the Red Cross recovered the body from the water around 12.55pm and shortly afterwards the doctor from a Samu ambulance certified his death.

According to witnesses, his family was present at the time of the tragedy. This cove can be very dangerous with swells and strong currents. On the day of the incident the sea was raging and the waves hitting hard and despite the presence of the rescue team on the beach of Los Locos who came to the rescue, little could be done to save the man’s life.

Amazing fundraising On-line fundraising for little Avery has raised 11,000 euros in 24 hours after being set up by a family friend to help pay for medical costs and repatriation of the 3 year old to his family home in Mallow, Co. Cork.

Vehicle burnt out in Orihuela Costa The Civil Guard has opened an investigation to clarify the reason behind a vehicle fire in Orihuela Costa, which appears to have been set deliberately. The blaze was extinguished by fire crews from Torrevieja.

The fire originated in the interior of a vehicle in Playa Flamenca in Orihuela Costa, on the waste-ground near to Parque del Duque. The SUV, parked in isolation from the public highway was completely burnt out.

British kickboxer on holiday in Spain stops robbers attacking family A British kickboxer on holiday in Spain has stopped Spanish robbers attacking an English family and recovered a watch worth more than 27,000 euros. Iman Barlow, 26, nicknamed ‘Pretty Killer’ was living it up with her boxer boyfriend in Mallorca. As the robbers tried to flee Iman kicked one of them in the chest, before her man Stan Stannard, 26, punched the other robber. The crime-fighting sweethearts have now returned to their Melton Mowbray home following the incident last weekend. Imam said she kicked the man in the chest to ‘slow him down’, She added: “He carried

on running and then a young girl shouted ‘he’s got my dad’s watch’ so Stan ran after him and hit him with a left hand punch. “Afterwards you start thinking he could have had a knife or a gun but instinct just kicked in at the time. We were given €50 from the family as a reward which we didn’t want. But she refused to let us leave without it. “So we enjoyed our last afternoon in Mallorca with some free burgers.” Imam has over 17,000 followers on Instagram and has won 88 of her 97 fights, 36 of which were knockouts.

British air hostess drunk on Spanish flight An Easyjet flight attendant has been escorted off a plane and arrested after allegedly being drunk while working. The pilot radioed air traffic control at Newcastle Airport to alert the police before the aircraft from Alicante touched down. Julie Birkett, 48, from Huddersfield has now been charged with performing an aviation function whilst unfit through drink. She is no longer employed by the budget airline and is set to appear in court in north Tyneside on 4th

September. The Yorkshire woman and her crew served passengers on the service, which took off at 11:40pm on Friday and landed at 1:10am UK time on Saturday. An Easyjet spokesperson said: “As this is a police matter we cannot comment on an ongoing investigation. “Easyjet has a zero tolerance policy on drugs and alcohol and our rules and regulations are very clear. The safety of our passengers and crew is our highest priority.”

BITE SIZE Collective action to contest loss of voting rights NEWS: Continued from page 3 Concepción with Canónigo Torres.

Off duty policeman stops drunk The off-duty Torrevieja policeman saw a car zigzagging down the carriageway and watched as it swerved onto the opposite side of the road. The officers was in his own car driving home from work when he noticed the car in front of him was driving erratically. The agent alerted 112, the Civil Traffic Guard and the local police in Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa. The police blocked the car as the young Spanish woman in her twenties headed towards the AP7 at Mil Palmeras along with two female passengers. In the breathalyzer test, the driver gave a rate of 0.52 mg / l in exhaled air, more than double the legal limit (0.25 mg / l) but less than the rate where the crime warrants an instant court case (0.60 mg / l). A fine of one thousand euros and the withdrawal of six points from the driving license has been levied.

Amateur boxer arrested for silent assault The 30 year old victim required facial surgery to have four titanium plates implanted and the bones of his face reconstructed. The attack occurred during the Moors and Christians festivities at the end of July. A 19 year old was arrested by the Civil Guard in Guardamar del Segura as the alleged perpetrator of an injury crime. According to police the victim was walking along the street with other friends when the attacked walked up and punched him hard in the face, without speaking a word. The blow made him fall to the ground unconscious, and all his friends could do was call the emergency services as the attacker fled the scene. For weeks police focused on local businesses, gyms and even on social networks, to find a profile that matched the characteristics of the attacker and finally found a young man who had practiced amateur boxing.

Pleasure boat fire in Torrevieja A spectacular fire in the port of Marina Salinas de Torrevieja generated a considerable response in the town. A pleasure boat moored in the dock of the port began to burn for reasons that are still under investigation. Soon the flames spread through the boat, forcing the employees of the company that owns the vessel to make use of the fire extinguishing system in the port to try to put the fire out but the extinguishers and hose weren’t enough. The Local Police and the Civil Guard attended the scene, as well as the firemen who managed to put out the fire before more vessels were affected. The emergency services placed a cord around the ship to prevent a diesel leak or the pollution generated by the fire from spreading through the port. The boat, called ‘Freedom’, belongs to a wellknown boat rental company and is used for leisure and fishing.

New tourism brochure for Torrevieja The Councillor for Tourism of the City of Torrevieja, Rosario Martínez Chazarra explained that in this new brochure, there are 51 distinguished companies representing 12 of the 35 trades such as hotels, restaurants and bars, but also the large number of shops, the three marinas, and the Natural Park of the Lagunas de la Mata-Torrevieja (in which there are more and more tourists interested in completing the routes) and public services such as beaches, tourist office or public safety. Inside you can find the information provided by each company in Spanish and English with details of the services they offer, as well as an identifying photo of them. The brochure aims to improve the tourist experience and satisfaction. The Councillor for Tourism thanked all the companies involved in the SICTED system for their effort and involvement in the tourist quality of Torrevieja and for their contribution so that this brochure goes from strength-to-strength each year.

On behalf of 15 Orihuela Costa residents, Helene Akerman, President of C.L.A.R.O., presented formal letters of complaint addressed to the Electoral Registration office (Censo Electoral) and the Orihuela Town Hall requesting explanations as to why they were not able to vote in the Orihuela municipal elections on 26 May. Something that C.L.A.R.O believes is a potentially serious matter involving the denial of a basic, legal, democratic right. Helene said: “Thanks to the people concerned who contacted C.L.A.R.O. representatives at three different polling stations in Orihuela Costa on 26 May, we have been able to coordinate this collective action. However, the extent of the problem will not be known until the authorities have investigated and replied to the formal complaints now registered. It is very probable that this is just the tip of the iceberg and many others experienced the same

problem on voting day but did not raise the alarm. The outcome of the election may even have been affected.” C.L.A.R.O. as a political party which contested the election, has also demanded explanations. On the day of the election, the complainants, all non-Spanish EU citizens, British and Irish nationals, approached C.L.A.R.O. party representatives on duty at the three different polling stations to say that they had been denied the right to vote in the municipal elections, despite having voting cards, having voted previously in municipal elections and being able to vote in the European Parliament elections held the same day. As EU citizens, once the wish to participate in local or European Parliament elections has been registered, this right can only be revoked by a formal declaration. No such declarations have been made. C.L.A.R.O. promised to take action on their behalf. It has taken time to

Helene Akerman

engage a competent lawyer, prepare formal complaints and to re-contact

the persons concerned and have them sign the letters of complaint. Helene added: “Since we believe that this may only be the tip of the iceberg, we appeal to any Orihuela Costa or Entre Naranjos residents who were denied their right to vote in the Orihuela municipal elections on 26 May, despite being registered to vote, having voted in previous local elections and who have not formally withdrawn this right to contact us either by e-mail on Claropolitico@gmail.com or telephone 0044(0) 771 902 8057 or 0034 669 350 491. No costs are involved in joining this action. The greater the number of those affected who formally complain, the more seriously the authorities will take this apparent violation of a legal, fundamental right. If it results from an administrative error or, more seriously, a manipulation of the vote, we demand to know and we will seek responsibilities.”

Nearly 400 people evacuated off Denia ferry A passenger ferry travelling between Majorca, Ibiza and the Spanish mainland had to be evacuated after running aground on Friday night. Nearly 400 people were ordered off the boat and put into life rafts in the port of Denia, around 30 miles from Benidorm. The Spanish coastguard and police helped passengers get to safety in a dramatic rescue mission that took two hours to complete. Incredibly there were no reports of any injuries as the Pinar del Rio ferry was cleared. Balearia said in a statement: ‘The fast ferry Pinar del Rio ran aground at 11.30pm last night by Denia’s harbour wall without any personal injury to passengers or crew. ‘The fast ferry, which was coming from Palma and

Ibiza, was going to dock in the port. There were 393 people and 70 vehicles on board. ‘All the passengers were unharmed and were evacuated using Spanish Coastguard and Civil Guard vessels and a Balearia tug.’ The company insisted there was no fuel spillage as an investigation was launched. Divers are evaluating the damage to the ship and trying to refloat the ferry so it can be brought into port. Passengers due to travel today on the stricken ferry have been relocated to three other ships. The Pinar del Rio fast ferry was involved in an incident in June last year when it ran aground off San Antonio in Ibiza. The vessel can carry 463 people and 80 vehicles.

First downpour since Navy prepares for megaquake that could wipe Easter

out Mediterranean coast

Since the rains during Holy Week, the Vega Baja has had no rainfall above 5 litres per square meter, the lower parameter of rainfall. However, when the rains did come last week, they did so in style with a heavy localised downpour that seemed to single out San Miguel de Salinas. The town was where the most abundant rainfall was recorded, at 32 litres per square meter, according to Pedro José Gómez, of MeteOrihuela. In some streets of the municipality the water reached the height of the curbs and completely flooded a number of roads. Luckily, in the fields and orchards the dryness of the earth absorbed most of the

rainfall and the Local Police of San Miguel de Salinas did not receive any notification of weather-related incidents. However, Local Police in Rojales were called out after a large branch snapped near the IES La Encantá and caused an obstruction. In the urbanisation of Ciudad Quesada, the 8 l / m2 was also quite noticeable, according to Meteo Orihuela, which led to parts of the golf course flooding. The most noticeable characteristic of the rains was its localised nature. It rained in Rojales and Orihuela (4.6 l / m2), but in Almoradí there wasn’t a drop. This was also case with Orihuela city and one of its districts, Raiguero de Bonanza,

where the rainfall barley met 0.2 l / m2. San Miguel was flooded but the coast remained dry. These rains, Pedro Gómez explained, were caused by the presence of cold air at high altitude and the wind inlet of Levante that provided a lot of humidity. The huge shortage of water suffered by the region and crops has not diminished despite the heavy rainfall. Farmers used the term "dust killer" to refer to how it has impacted on crops. Although any rainfall is welcome, given the severe drought, these rains failed to quench the thirst of the Vega Baja orchard, with the exception possibly of San Miguel de Salinas.

Europe is preparing for a shock 7.0-magnitude earthquake, amid concerns that a doomsday mega-quake could unleash a tsunami into Mediterranean’s tourist hotspots, with just 15 minutes warning. Ten leading navies carried out a surprise four-day 'Mighty Waves' drill intended to prepare European countries for a earthquaketsunami disaster. Forces from Israel, US, France, and Greece took part recently in the doomsday drills in Israel's Haifa port that responded to a simulated 7.0-magnitude earthquake. In the simulated scenario, the earthquake struck northern Israel, killing thousands and knocking out infrastructure. During the exercises, the forces simulated extracting wounded civilians from the sea for treatment and transferring humanitarian aid. Representatives of seven other navies took part as observers. On average, a severe tsunami hits the Mediterranean Sea once a century, and Israel’s coastline suffers one on average every 250 years. A shock 2016 report from Israel’s Foreign

Affairs and Defense Committee’s Home-Front Readiness Subcommittee found that if Israel were to be struck by a 7.5 magnitude earthquake, an estimated 7,000 people would be killed and another 8,600 injured. European countries lead the Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the Tsunami Early Warning and Mitigation System in the Northeastern Atlantic, the Mediterranean and connected seas. As part of the system, countries have more than 20 minutes to evacuate its populations the moment an earthquake happens in Crete or Greece. The threat of a

European mega-quake follows a warning that the southern Atlantic coast of Spain is under threat of being wiped out by a tsunami. Regions such as the south of Spain and the east of the Mediterranean are actively seismic, putting them at risk of tsunamis. Ignacio Aguirre, an expert on natural risks at the Environmental Hydraulics Institute of Cantabria, said: “We don’t pay the necessary attention to areas that are threatened by the probability of tsunamis, such as southern Spain.” The researcher warned that cities like Huelva and Cadiz need an emergency plan put in place.

New political party to fight for independence

From Monday the 19th August Partido Independencia Orihuela Costa (PIOC) will be a political party fighting for the Independence of Orihuela Costa. Founders believe that the time is fast approaching for the Coast to break free from Orihuela city and aim to campaign for Independence. Spokesman Peter Houghton said: “We are looking to the examples set by our closest neighbours who broke free and

even dropped the name Orihuela, such as Guardamar for example. Actually, Orihuela Costa was given to us by our illustrious Council, so there is no reason why we should be called Orihuela Costa, why not Costa Campoamor for example. “If you check any Title Deeds, nowhere does it say Orihuela Costa. Secondly, think how much we will better off, not just financially but also we will have

more control over what and how much is being built here on the Coast.” A great example is Pilar, look at their roads, proper zebra crossings, nicely painted with proper warning lights. Clean streets, no rubbish piling up by the bins. Whilst we are under the shackles of this council and Mayor, we will never progress. Meanwhile, the bulk of their 49 percent revenue that is generated here on the coast paid for by our taxes goes to finance projects in the city and nothing for here on the Coast. “What was once a whisper is now growing into a voice and that is we have had enough!” PIOC went on to explain that gaining independence will not be achieved over night and that its frst aim would be to secure financial control. It believes this would allow the coast to ´blosssom and flourish’ and encourage residents will stay longer. Other aims include the opening of the half-built Emergency centre, a Cultural centre, the installation of the missing footbridges and infrastructure improvements to several local roads.

Spain to take some of Open Arms migrants

Spain and five other countries in Europe have offered to take in the 147 migrants who remain on board the charity rescue boat Open Arms now that Italy has temporarily lifted its ban on undocumented migrants seeking asylum. France, Germany, Portugal, Luxembourg and Romania have joined Spain in agreeing to resettle the refugees from Africa who were rescued from drowning in the central Mediterranean and who are mostly escaping threatened or actual violence, torture and, in the case of girls and women, sexual assault. Open Arms' Italian captain Riccardo Gatti says he will 'believe it when he sees it', given that the craft has been adrift on the sea for a fortnight and no European government has offered to help. A further four rescuees were evacuated due to medical problems, joining about 10 others, including three pregnant women about to give birth at any minute. The Open Arms has been permitted to enter Italian waters in the previous two days, having spent the last 13 days adrift in waters that did not belong to any country as it was not granted permission from any national authority, meaning drifting within three nautical miles of a coast would have been considered an illegal incursion. Spain's government says the migrant issue needs to be dealt with on a Europe-wide basis, and has been pushing for the EU to agree measures with all member States concerning rescue and distribution - but Spain has been very much alone in its appeal so far, with several right-wing European governments opposing having anything to do with the refugees. Gatti revealed that the situation on the boat at the moment was 'reaching crisis point', with despairing refugees threatening suicide and many of them in poor health.

Hollywood star Richard Gere, on a break with his Spanish wife Alejandra Silva in Rome, purchased and handdelivered food parcels for everyone on board the Open Arms earlier last week. He revealed that he spoke to Spanish president Pedro Sánchez on Thursday and that the latter 'understands the situation'. "I spoke to him from the boat and reiterated how much I believed in his sense of goodwill and his sensitivity, but how I believed he was looking at it from a political, not a humanitarian, viewpoint," Gere said. "The metaphor I used was that these people were jumping out of a burning building and that those whose values border on neo-fascism were not only failing to applaud the rescuers, but actually penalising them and forcing them to put the people back inside the burning building.

Darkest forces "Anyone who has a negative image of the migrants should speak to them personally. They're innocent people traumatised women and children." Gere had talked to most of those on board and said the tales they told of what they were running from were horrific. He described a teenage boy being bought and sold by the military, and three generations of women who had been repeatedly raped and tortured. "There's a clear right side and wrong side to this issue in the face of the darkest forces," Gere, 69, reported. The actor referred to US president Donald Trump as 'the darkest force on the planet'. Heart attack cyclist rescued from Sierra A

29-year-old male is in the Hospital de la Vega Baja with a reserved prognosis, after suffering an accident in the Sierra de Redován, in the area of the via ferrata. A helicopter rescued the young man and transferred him to the San Bartolomé hospital after he suffered a cardiac arrest. Apparently, the man was sports riding on the bike on the mountain and suffered an accident, which happened around 10am on Sunday morning. A SAMU team moved to assist and was supported by a medical helicopter team.

Brit left penniless by conman landlord A British expat in Benidorm has been left with just ‘€40 euros to her name’ after an alleged conman changed the locks to her newly refurbished bar. Karen Wadrop, 47, said it was her ‘dream’ to run a Benidorm

boozer and found a landlord eager to rent an establishment to her in the Rincon de Loix area at the beginning of June. But after spending ‘every penny she owned’ on redecoration, new stock and workers’ wages, Karen was

‘shocked’ to find new locks on her doors on 12th August. Karen soon learned the landlord was himself a tenant in rent arrears of ‘over €45,000’. “I paint on a smile and cross my fingers, but inside I’m worried sick,” Karen said.

Woman killed by own car A 38 year old woman has been run over by her own car in a freak accident in Castalla, inland from Alicante. The tragedy happened after she got out of the vehicle and it rolled backwards her. The woman had her two children, a seven year old boy and an 18 month old baby, with her in the car at the time she was fatally injured. According to sources the woman had reportedly put the handbrake on, and it is not known how it became disengaged. However, the vehicle was released and the van began rolling on the slope whilst the woman was behind

it. Running over her and crushing her. There were several medical professionals and police officers nearby despite it being a rural location, as there was an annual fiesta celebration about

to start. Several of them rushed to the scene once the alarm was raised by a local farmer. Paramedics also arrived quickly but despite their efforts they were unable to save the woman.

Shock as 15 year old charged for falling through manhole A family of Brits have had their holiday ‘ruined’ after a young girl fell into a septic tank at a ‘death trap’ villa in Alicante. The group of 14 people arrived at the Villa L’Arc in Moraira – after forking out almost €7,000 – only to find ‘loose hanging handrails’ over a six metre drop and a ‘loose manhole’ covering up the fetid tank. In the accident a 15-year-old girl fell ‘up to her waist’ into filthy water and came out screaming. According to the group the manhole was on the floor of a sunbathing area,

without any warning signs. A family member said: “If she’d been any younger she could have died in a dark concrete tank of dirty water.” Young relatives were ‘cutting their toes’ on the broken covers of the pool skimmers, and the group claims the sinks and drains were blocked for the first three days of the stay at the ‘death trap’ villa. “When you’re paying €6,800 it really is a poor show,” they added. “We feel robbed, misled and cheated businesses should not be allowed to offer family

holidays in dangerous homes like this.” Wright claimed that workmen from the Benissabased rental company came round and only ‘laughed at the family’s misfortune’. The family made a denuncia with Guardia Civil after the compnay withheld the €1,000 deposit and have threatened to make ‘weekly negative reviews’ on TripAdvisor until the deposit was returned, which it was this week. However, the company withheld €60 for a ‘replacement manhole cover’.

Three arrested for drug trafficking in Orihuela

CostaBlancaPeople 20th - 26th August 2019

Orihuela Local Police officers have arrested three people as alleged perpetrators of a drug trafficking crime. The arrests, the result of two different police actions, were carried out after officers saw an exchange of drugs and money to an individual who was driving a motorcycle. The man was then pursued and stopped by officers. At the time of the arrest, the man was carrying ten cocaine papers, all prepared for sale. In another action, the Local Police of Orihuela arrested two other people after thirteen bags of marijuana and eight

cocaine papers were found inside a vehicle, which was stopped for having and expired ITV. Again the drugs were prepared and ready for sale. In addition, the occupants also carried large amounts of cash and a scale used for the sale of drugs.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP: At the end of last week, sterling lost an average of 1.0% against major currencies. Compared with its position prior to the referendum three years ago, it is 13% lower. Relative to its place in the immediate aftermath, it is down by 6%. Brexit and the ecostats contributed to another difficult week for sterling. Despite parliamentary recess, fears over no-deal continue to be stoked, as does the resistance against it, with John Bercow stating that parliament will be shut down to force through a no deal and Jeremy Corbyn proposing to head up a caretaker government ahead of another general election. The latter was not met with a warm reaction from the markets and with a disappointing slew of figures this week it was not a robust enough proposal to assist the pound. Britain’s GDP shrank by 0.2% in the second quarter of the year, worse than expected and the pound weakened on the news. Manufacturing output fell 0.2% in June and industrial production was down by 0.1% for annual declines of 1.4% and 0.6%. Unemployment increased slightly to 3.9% and the good news was that basic earnings were up by the same amount, 3.9%, outpacing inflation. Inflation was the one area that gave assistance to the pound because the numbers beat forecast but the recovery was short-lived. The UK consumer price index rose 2.1% in the year to July while the old retail price index, which includes housing costs, was up by 2.8%.

EUR: Movements from the euro were counter-intuitive. ZEW’s surveys of investor confidence in Germany fell in August but the euro moved higher after the release. There was also little reaction to the fact that German GDP shrank 0.1% in Q2. It is perhaps because the slow-down has been so well signalled that the results were expected. In addition, technical support at $1.1160 twice prevented it falling before that support gave way and the euro lost a fifth of a US cent on the day. It was also a fifth of a cent lower against the pound. There was a lot of focus on the German numbers; CPI inflation came in unchanged at 1.7% and EU-standard HCPI inflation also held steady at 1.1%. Nothing announced this week from across Europe seemed to imply that there would be a change to the ECB’s plans to adjust monetary policy. Towards the end of the week, the euro fell against the US dollar, heading towards a two-year low reached in July, due to positive figures from America despite the US yield curve suggesting that a recession may be on the horizon. The Governor of the Bank of Finland, Olli Rehn suggested that a "significant and impactful policy package" was needed to support the European economy. The Bank of Finland is considered a rate setter in relation to the ECB and as a result his remarks to the Wall Street Journal were given due consideration as a sign of things to come.

Will he ever change?

I really like this girl

My partner and I have been together for 3 years. In that time he has had several affairs. On each occasion I suspected something, found proof and confronted him. Every time he swears he will change. Now I am recognising all the signs again. I have told him how hurt I get and how worthless I feel. He says he loves me and that he won‘t do it again. I want to leave but we have two children. They are young at the moment, but I worry they will find out when they are older.

I really like this girl who works on reception at my gym. I don’t know how to approach her - I haven’t got much confidence. I think she likes me because she smiles when she sees me, but I guess she might smile at all the customers, so I am not sure. I don’t want to make a fool of myself. I’ve never had a proper girlfriend. Any advice?

Your partner is a serial cheat and it doesn’t look like he is able to help himself. You’ve given him chance after chance and it’s not getting any better. How can someone say they love you, then disregard how you feel when they cheat? Your children will detect unhappiness between you as they get older, and it can be devastating for them to learn there have been infidelities. Only you can decide whether it is worth staying with this man.

Take it slow - start off by chatting about every day things - comment on the weather, the traffic for instance. Ask her if she has to travel far to get to work, those sorts of things, and build up the conversation each time you go. Use her name when you are talking to her, be friendly but don‘t come on too strong. As you get to know this girl casually, then you will know if she is available because she may slip in the fact that she has a boyfriend (or not). Then you will know for sure. If she is single then suggest a coffee after work.

Funny smells in your home You know that ultra-fresh, citrus-kissed scent that greets you when you walk into the lobby of a luxury hotel? You may fantasise about your home having a signature scent that makes it feel like a clean, safe sanctuary, but life (and reality) can sometimes get in the way. Whether it’s a smelly dishwasher, mysterious shower drain smells, pets, kids, or even unwanted moisture, there are many side-effects of everyday life that can fill your home with a less-thanpleasant scent. If you can’t figure out where that ghastly odour is coming from, check these likely causes—you might find the culprit where you least expect it. Your pets They’re very much a part of the family, but just like humans, they can get smelly. When their hair falls out, bacteria grow— and it could get nasty really quick. To remedy this, bathe your pet often, and

also clean the spots where they sleep and eat once a week with soap and water (no harsh chemicals). Also vacuum under beds and sofas to avoid hair (and odour) build-up. Your bedding We’ve all heard that we can’t smell our own home, and that is because it smells like our bodies. One particular offender in this case is your sheets, which become steeped in your own body oils and dirt when you don’t wash them regularly. Experts recommend washing your sheets weekly if you shower in the morning, and every two weeks if you shower at night. Rubbish bin This one seems obvious—rubbish stinks, after all. Little spills and crumbs can build up over time and form bad odours inside your can that linger even

when you take out the rubbish bag (you should empty the rubbish regularly, of course). To clean the bin properly, spray it with diluted bleach and let it sit for a few hours. Rinse it with plenty of water, and then use soap to wash it out. Another solution: Designate one bin for “dirty rubbish” and take it out every day, even if it isn’t full. Your front-load washer Household appliances that come in constant contact with water can harbour mould, which is the perfect breeding ground for smelly bacteria. Every time you open and close the washer’s door, moisture from each cycle is trapped in the seal. The detergent drawer can also trap moisture and mould. To prevent this, always leave the door and detergent drawer open for a few hours following your last load. And if you find mould, use a one-to-one mixture of white vinegar and baking soda to wipe down the affected areas. Your dishwasher Just like your washer, this is a popular spot for potential mould—and smells. It’s warm, damp environment is like heaven for mould spores, especially when there’s food particles left behind from your last cycle. Fix it by regularly running an empty dry-heat cycle to flush out the interior, including the silverware basket, filter, panels, and door gasket. If your silverware basket gets mouldy, remove it and let it soak in the kitchen sink with diluted bleach and warm water for 30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly before replacing.

Stud Farm opens doors for exclusive visit Those looking to experience the ´real Spain’ and discover a few hidden gems can now book a new and exclusive visit to the prestigious Yeguada Bejar stud farm. An admirer of the majestic and noble horse, José Conesa founded Yeguada La Peña de Béjar in the year 2000 when he retired and channelled his energies and passion into the world of horses. The first step was to travel to different stud farms in Andalucia, Barcelona and Alicante with the aim of finding the best quality pure Spanish bred horses. As a result he acquired the best examples of both stallions and mares from all over Spain to create the stud farm. Situated between Levante and Andalucia, Puerto Lumbreras is where more than 450 of these extraordinary Spanish pure breed horses can now be found. Breeding and schooling horses are the main work carried out in the Peña de Bejar. Candau, Lovera, Romero Benitez Escalera or Yeguada Militar brands are the backbone of the stud farm and from these lines the most important stud farm in the region of Murcia has been formed. The result has been awards for the breeding of Pure breed champions in Valencia, Jerez and Seville. The stud has numerous

wins in the category of functionality of movement in the dressage arena and victories in morphological competitions at an international level and prizes for the best thoroughbreds in many national exhibitions. A large quantity of trophies and the quality certificate vouch for the success of the breeding. The trip takes place on 20th September and begins with your pick up from one of the local meeting points on arrival the visitors will be treated to a full guided tour of the stud farm. This will be followed by a performance by the prestigious show horses where the classic combination of drama and art combine to make for a high class dressage and theatrical spectacular. The horse, in harmony with both the music and the rider, is the essence of classical dressage. Representatives of the pure Spanish breed, the horses and

riders of the impressive Lumbrense stud farm are ambassadors of tradition, dexterity and skill. Uranium IV and Bronco VII are the equine stars of the arena, stallions that deserve their position at the very pinnacle of the sport. La Peña de Béjar is today a major player in this competitive world of showmanship and dressage and this is a unique opportunity to experience all it has to offer. The trip culminates in a Spanish lunch at a local traditional restaurant. Organised by local Spanish lady Begona Josa del Portillo, the this tour is the perfect way to discover the wider region as well as sampling the delights of one of the most prestigious stud farms. Begona has been hosting trips and tours for several years and has helped hundreds of people to enjoy a taste of the ‘real Spain’. To book you place and arrange pick up call Begona on 622 188 772.

Nine women accuse Spanish tenor Plácido Domingo of sexual harassment Nine women have accused Plácido Domingo, one of the leading figures in the world of opera, of sexual harassment. Their testimonies have been published by the Associated Press (AP), which said that only one of the accusers, the retired mezzo-soprano Patricia Wulf, agreed to go on the record, while the others withheld their identities for fear of reprisals. The news agency reported that the Madrid-born tenor and opera director allegedly harassed young women who were starting their careers, offering jobs in exchange for sexual favours and professionally punishing those who refused his advances. The alleged events took place over the course of three decades, starting in the late 1980s, said the AP. None of the women could offer documentation to back up their accusations, but the AP “independently verified that the women worked where they said they did and that Domingo overlapped with them at those locations.” Domingo responded in a statement: “It is painful to hear that I may have upset anyone or made them feel uncomfortable – no matter how long ago and

despite my best intentions.” After calling the accusations “inaccurate,” Domingo added that “I recognize that the rules and standards by which we are – and should be – measured against today are very different than they were in the past.”

The 78-year-old Domingo is one of the most admired tenors of all time, and a powerful figure in the world of classical music. He has sung 150 roles in over 4,000 performances, continues to sing, and also works as the director of the Los Angeles Opera. He famously teamed up with Luciano Pavarotti and José Carreras to form the popular trio known as The Three Tenors in the 1990s and early 2000s. Eight singers and a dancer told the AP that they were harassed by Domingo, whose attitude towards women was “an open secret” in the world of opera. One of them said he stuck his hand

down her skirt, and three more said he forced kisses on them at business lunches, dressing rooms and hotel rooms. Another half a dozen women said Domingo made overtures that made them feel uncomfortable, including insistent phone calls to ask them out on dates. Seven women said they felt their careers had been hurt after refusing Domingo’s advances. The AP spoke with “almost three dozen” other people from the world of opera, who confirmed that “they witnessed inappropriate sexually tinged behavior by Domingo and that he pursued younger women with impunity.” Two of the women said they finally agreed to have sex with Domingo because they felt they could not refuse the most powerful man in their line of work. Many women said that colleagues warned them never to be alone with the tenor, not even in an elevator. “There is an oral tradition of warning women against Plácido Domingo,” said a mezzo-soprano who worked at the LA Opera but is not among the accusers, the AP reported.

Still no closer to forming government More than one hundred days have passed since the general election, and there is still no sign that acting Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is any closer to reaching a governing deal that would allow him to be voted back into office. The leader of the Socialist Party (PSOE) won the highest number of seats at the April polls, but fell short of an absolute majority, meaning he needs the support of other parties if he is to continue as Spain’s prime minister. Sánchez failed to secure either an absolute majority or a simple majority in his first investiture bid in July, after negotiations broke down with anti-austerity group Unidas Podemos (a coalition of Podemos and the United Left), which chose to abstain from the two rounds of voting. The Socialists, who have 123 seats in Congress, depend on the support of Unidas Podemos’ 40 deputies, but the two parties have been unable to reach a governing deal, despite months of negotiations. Sánchez offered the party a deputy prime minister spot, as well as Health, Housing and Equality ministries, but Unidas Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias

demanded a deputy prime minister role for social rights and equality, as well as the Health, Labour and Science and Universities ministries – a demand Sánchez refused. Relations between the PSOE and Unidas Podemos have remained strained since the failed investiture bid, and sources from La Moncloa, the seat of the central government, say there is currently no contact between the two parties. Sánchez is now trying a new strategy to win the support of the anti-austerity party: instead of a coalition government, the acting prime minister wants to reach an agreement on government programs. As part of this strategy, Sánchez has been meeting with women’s associations, environmental groups, organizations that fight against depopulation and education activists. But Unidas Podemos remains suspicious. Unidas Podemos lawmaker Pablo Echenique wrote in a message on Twitter: “Either I keep 100 percent of power, with 20 percent of the votes and 35 percent of the seats, or I take Spain to new elections. This continues to be the last ultimatum-threat of Pedro Sánchez. All the rest is just

decoration.” If Sánchez fails to be invested at a second potential vote in September, Spain will head toward fresh elections in November. It would be the fourth time that Spaniards have been called to the polls to choose a government in four years, and the fifth election held this year alone.

Abstentions The PSOE has called on the right-wing Popular Party (PP) and centre-right Ciudadanos (Citizens) to abstain from the investiture vote to break the political deadlock, but both parties have refused. What’s more, PP secretary general, Teodoro García Ege, said recently that PSOE should abstain to allow the PP and Ciudadanos to lead a coalition government headed by PP leader Pablo Casado. “As the only problem Spain has in forming a government is that no one trusts Pedro Sánchez – not even Podemos, or Pablo Iglesias trust him, a space should be made for another candidate,” he said. His comments came a day after the King of Spain, Felipe VI, stated: “It would be best to find a solution before going to elections.

Siem Reap

Siem Reap) is the capital city of Siem Reap Province in northwestern Cambodia. It is a popular resort town and a gateway to the Angkor region. Siem Reap has colonial and Chinese-style architecture in the Old French Quarter and around the Old Market. In the city, there are museums, traditional Apsara dance performances, a Cambodian cultural village, souvenir and handicraft shops, silk farms, ricepaddies in the countryside, fishing villages and a bird sanctuary near the Tonle Sap Lake and a vibrant, cosmopolitan drinking and dining scene. Siem Reap today—being a popular tourist destination—has a large number of hotels, resorts, restaurants and businesses closely related to tourism. This is much owed to its proximity to the Angkor temples, the most popular tourist attraction in Cambodia. Attractions Angkor Wat: Angkor Wat (Wat temple) is the central feature of the Angkor UNESCO World Heritage Site containing the magnificent remains of the Khmer civilization. Angkor Wat's rising series of five towers culminates in an impressive central tower that symbolizes mythical Mount Meru. Thousands of feet of wall space are covered with intricate carving depicting scenes from Hindu mythology. The most important are the Carved Bas reliefs of the Hindu narratives. Angkor Thom: Angkor Thom is an inner royal city built by Jayavarman VII, the Empire's famed 'Warrior King', at the end of the 12th century and is renowned for its temples, in particular the Bayon. Other notable sites are Baphuon, Phimeanakas, The Terrace of the Elephants and The Terrace of the Leper King. Other temples: A number of significant temples are dotted around

Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom within the Angkor Archaeological Park, including Ta Prohm, Preah Khan, Banteay Kdei, Phnom Bakheng, Ta Keo, Ta Som, East Mebon, Pre Rup and Neak Pean. These temples may be visited along the grand circuit or the small circuit routes. Markets: The Old Market or Psah Chas is located between Pub Street and the Siem Reap River, and offers a mixture of souvenirs for tourists and a variety of food produce and other items meant for the locals. Other markets in Siem Reap include the Angkor Night Market which is located off Sivutha Street, Phsar Kandal (The Central Market) located at Sivutha Street which mainly caters to tourists, and Phsar Leu (The Upper Market) which is located further away along National Road 6 but is the biggest market of Siem Reap used by the locals. Nightlife in Siem Reap The majority of bars and pubs of Siem Reap are concentrated in on a strip called Pub Street and it's surrounding alleys. Although peaceful during the day, the streets in the Pub Street area which is just a block away from the historic Psah Chas (Old Market), comes alive with lights and music. Tourists, both local and international alike, starts pouring into the bars and pubs and give the streets almost a nightly street party scene. Artisans Angkor Artisans Angkor is a semi-public company founded in 1992 which aims to revive traditional Khmer craftsmanship and provide employment for rural artisans. It is also associated with a silk farm where visitors may learn about sericulture and weaving Cambodian Cultural Village Opened on 24 September 2003, the Cambodian Cultural Village assembles all the miniatures of famous historical buildings and structures of Cambodia. There are 11 unique villages, which represent different culture heritages, local customs and characteristics of 21 multi races. Climate Siem Reap features a tropical wet and dry climate. The city is generally hot throughout the course of the year, with average high temperatures never falling below 30 C in any month. Siem Reap has a relatively lengthy wet season which starts in April and ends in November. The dry season covers the remaining four months. The city averages approximately 1500 mm of rainfall per year.

Ryanair cabin crew in Spain planning 10 days of strikes Spanish unions representing Ryanair cabin crew are threatening 10 days of strikes in September over the airline’s plans to shut down bases in Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Girona. The Sitcpla and USO unions on Wednesday lodged a notice of their plans for industrial action on September 1, 2, 6, 8, 13, 15, 20, 22, 27 and 28. The Irish low-cost carrier operates 13 bases in Spain, all of which would be affected by the stoppages. Following Spanish legislation, company and union leaders will now be called to a mediation. If no deal emerges, a formal notice of strike will be filed with the relevant authorities.

Jairo Gonzalo, an official at USO, questioned the company’s “willingness to reach a deal, or even to come to the meeting with a negotiating attitude.” “Over a year’s worth of meetings at official Spanish institutions at which they routinely displayed a mocking attitude does not give us the slightest hope of reaching any kind of understanding,” he added. The protests are a result of Ryanair’s plans to shut down its Las Palmas and Tenerife Sur bases on January 8, as well as its Girona base at an undisclosed date. There are 300 cabin crew

employees working at those bases, although Ryanair did not say how many would be laid off. The company says the decision is based on delays in the delivery of the grounded Boeing 737 MAX, rising fuel prices and higher labor costs. Meanwhile, Ryanair pilots in Spain are also considering industrial action of their own. The pilot union Sepla said the closure of the three bases could lead to as many as 100 layoffs among aircraft captains. The airline faced a series of pilot and cabin crew strikes across Europe last year.

Tax office writes off all debts of €3 or less! Spain’s tax authorities have wiped out all debts owing by individuals and companies for €3 or less, according to a communication released last week. Hacienda, as the national revenue office is known, says an amendment has been made to a Ministerial Order dating back to 2002 and that those who were owing as at March 1 this year would be removed from the

debtors' list. This move is 'strictly financial', Hacienda explains, since unpaid tax totalling €3 or less would cost more to chase up and collect than the amount owing. Even taking into account that the collective amount of debts held nationally that do not exceed €3 may total hundreds of thousands, each and every one of them would require a letter, text message or email, or even a

notification in the State Official Bulletin (BOE) where payment reminders have failed, plus the employee time required in issuing these, meaning the total admin and labour cost would surpass the collective sum missing. Tax authorities say it is 'not worth it' as they would 'get nothing out of' continuing to chase these cases.

Average cost of rent in Spain jumps 50 percent in five years A new report from the Bank of Spain has revealed that the average cost of rent in Spain has risen 50% in the past five years. According to the study, which is based on figures from the real estate website Idealista, rental prices rose the most in Palma and Barcelona (more than 50%), followed by Málaga, Madrid, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Valencia (around 45 percent), between the end of 2013 and May 2019. Areas in inland Spain however, saw the lowest spikes in rental prices. The report found that the rental prices have increased at a “significantly” faster rate than housing costs. The rising cost of rent is hitting low-income homes particularly hard. According to the study, families with few resources, who account for the majority of the rental community, are less likely to buy property, given the difficulty of accessing credit. What’s more, they spend a higher percentage of their salary on rent. The report showed that in 2014, the average spending on rental expenses represented 27% of the net income of all Spanish homes, and 46.9 percent of the net income of low-income homes. In both cases, Spain is above the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) country average.

According to the report, “24.7 percent of homes had rental costs of more than 40 percent of their net income in 2014, compared to the OECD average of 13.1 percent.” Spaniards in the lowest income bracket spend 63.9 percent of their net earnings on rent, a figure only topped by Greece (68.6 percent). The Bank of Spain report indicates that the increasing profitability of rental properties has attracted new players to the market such as investment funds, businesses and real estate investment trusts (known in Spain as socimis). The study, however, says this is not the only

possible factor behind the rise in rental prices. Other causes include the precariousness of working conditions, which make it more difficult for Spaniards who are unemployed or in temporary jobs to buy property; the growing number of people moving to the cities in search of work; and the reduced amount of available social housing. The Bank of Spain study does not reach any strong conclusions on whether the rise in short-term vacation rentals like Airbnb have pushed up the cost of rent in Spain. While the report makes note of the trend, it argues there is no proven correlation.

Bingeworthy Box Sets Search Party The disappearance of former college acquaintance Chantal leads several 20-somethings to get entangled in the mystery of how she went missing. Leading the search party is Dory, a lifelong doormat who works as a rich housewife's assistant. Dory makes it her personal mission to find Chantal -- and she's bringing her friends into the investigation with her. Self-diagnosed narcissist Elliott, who puts his ego aside long enough to agree to help Dory, is particularly good at detective work. Bubbly actress Portia excels at chatting up suspects for information because of her desperate need to be in the spotlight. Sheltered-but-sweet doofus Drew has to grow a spine to help solve the mystery and save his deteriorating relationship with Dory. Dory's exboyfriend Julian seeks the truth, regardless of who it hurts, because of his background as a journalist.

Nighty Night Notorious for its dark humour, the show follows narcissistic sociopath Jill Tyrell (Julia Davis), alongside her moronic, asthmatic assistant Linda (Ruth Jones), as Jill learns that her husband Terry (Kevin Eldon) has cancer. She uses this fact to manipulate new neighbour Cathy Cole (Rebecca Front), a wheelchair user with multiple sclerosis, whose husband is Don Cole (Angus Deayton), a womanising doctor and the man with whom Jill becomes increasingly obsessed.

Jade Goody’s widower Jack Tweed has revealed he hasn't found love 10 years on from her tragic death aged 27. On a recent edition of Good Morning Britain, the TV personality, 32, admitted he hasn't managed to get into a successful relationship since the Big Brother star's passing as 'no one compares' to his late wife. The former footballers' agent confessed he felt like he 'lost her all over again' when he recently watched Channel 4's documentary, Jade: The Reality Star Who Changed Britain, but insisted he hopes the program will promote smear tests following Jade's death from cervical cancer. Jack tied the knot with reality star Jade in 2009 following a three year romance, just one month before her passing on Mother's Day. The Essex native who briefly had a relationship with Chanelle Hayes in 2013 admitted he hasn't been able to completely move on with another woman since his loss. He explained to hosts Richard Madeley, Kate Garraway and Charlotte Hawkins: 'I’m alright, I

just get by, you know what I mean, I just get on with it. 'But yes, I haven’t met anyone. I don’t feel like I could meet anyone yet, as no one really compares to Jade, so I don’t want to put that person… It’s not fair on a person to put them through that.' Netflix horror film Eerie leaves viewers so petrified they have to sleep with the light on as they gush about the 'creepy' supernatural drama. The new Netflix drama is set in Sta. Lucia Academy for girls, and follows guidance counsellor Pat Consolacion (Bea Alonzo) as she tries to uncover the mystery behind a student's gruesome death. During her investigation, Pat discovers the secrets of the Catholic school, its strict head Mother Alice (Charo SantosConcio), and the monster that has been nurtured in the shadows of the institution over the past century. Viewers were petrified by the horror film so much that they even struggled to sleep in the dark, and took to Twitter to share their struggle.

Kate Garraway left Good Morning Britain co-host Richard Madeley red-faced as she joked with her co-host about the rude play on his name as they discussed UKIP leader Richard Braine, who has complained about people referring to him as d***brain'. Turning to Richard, Kate asked 'So what's it like to be a d***? Love Island's Maura Higgins 'is set to star in her own reality TV show without beau Curtis Pritchard' following her success on this year's series. The Irish beauty, 28, is apparently the key focus for television executives after they decided against featuring couple's spin-offs this year. Maura and Curtis appear to be going strong, with the ring girl recently gushing that she couldn't wait to be reunited with the professional dancer on Instagram. But producers are allegedly worried that Love Island relationships have ended during filming in previous years and want to avoid the same thing happening again.

Get your summer viewing sorted with AA Free English TV AA Free English TV based in La Florida, 03189, close to La Zenia Boulevard have been providing English television services for over 16 years on the Costa Blanca, Costa Calida and now worldwide. The company fully understands the needs of expatriates to have affordable and reliable television which AA Free English TV can provide on many different platforms including all premium channels from many countries. Using their wealth of knowledge they will happily advise you on the best system for your needs and requirements and they boast they will not be beaten on price or service.

Their main specialisation is installing satellite systems mainly for Europeanclients and they have dealt with many happy clients from Holland, Spain, France, Germany, Scandinavia, Portugal, India and more. Installer Stuart is a fully trained Sky engineer who has been in Spain for over 16 years and works with Pete, who set up the company in response to his own frustration at not being able to get a decent reliable platform to watch British channels. Satellites were once the main and only way to pick up British TV and are still very popular with AA Free English TV clients. Free to air systems start from as little as 295 euros oneoff payment. Other options available to customers are IPTV internet protocol television. These work without a dish and just require an internet onnection. They

offer a full TV package with five day catch up TV service with over 5,000 movies and700 box sets series included from only 330 euros including the receiver. Pete believes IPTV is the future of television as the infrastructure for the internt get beter and better. We also have our top of the range system at only 299 euros with 28 days catch-up TV on hundreds of channels plus over 10,000 movies and over 1,000 box sets for you to enoy when you want. All the systems are considerably cheaper than the monthly payments you pay to the rebroadcasting companies making them the sensible choice in making real monetary savings in the longterm whilst still enjoying an ever-widening range of program choices. You can also see the systems working before you purchase from us. We are

always at the end of the phone and nine times out of ten we can get to our clients within 24 working hours. AA Free English TV Tel:606297825 www.aafreeenglishtv.com

UK’s top paid TV star Amanda Holden has reportedly become the highest-paid female TV star in the UK, beating out stars such as daytime darling Holly Willoughby. A source said that the Britain's Got Talent judge, 48, has earned a staggering £5 million this year from a string of six-figure deals, including her job as a DJ on the Heart Radio Breakfast

Show. Amanda has also cashed in thanks to various ranges for Marks and Spencer's and QVC Interior, and also owns two properties with husband Chris Hughes. The source said: “Amanda's earning potential has gone through the roof the last few years. She's raking it in from various angles and is sitting very pretty

right now. Amanda has now overtaken other female TV stars including Holly Willoughby and the likes of Claudia Winkleman. She's hot property and ITV's golden girl.” It was reported that Amanda has earned her millions through various TV deals, including around £1 million as a judge for Britain's Got Talent. The mother-of-two has been a regular on the panel since the show's inception in 2007, and will also join Simon Cowell, David Walliams and Alesha Dixon for the

upcoming BGT: The Champions later this month. Amanda is also reportedly earning £1.5 million for her job as a Heart Radio DJ making her a higher-paid radio star than BBC favourite Zoe Ball. Last month it was also reported that Amanda had signed a £1 million record deal with Virgin EMI after a hefty bidding war. The much-loved also has a £500,000 deal with Fenn Wright Mason, alongside ranges with Marks and Spencer and QVC for a similar figure.

There is a cauliflower shortage It might be getting harder to get your five-aday when it comes to vegetables if this latest news is anything to go by. There is a shortage of cauliflowers, cabbages and broccoli after a week of heavy rain damaged crops in Lincolnshire. But it doesn't stop there as our 'love to hate' Christmas staple, the humble Brussels sprouts, may also be at risk. Online food shoppers will notice that supermarkets are only offering organic cauliflowers. Customers are also being advised that standard single and large cauliflowers are "currently unavailable". British Growers have described the situation as "very concerning" and chief executive Jack Ward says that the shortage is likely to continue into September. The affect is being noticed now after crops in the region were deluged with as much as six inches (152mm) of rain in a week in June. Mr Ward said: "For some, a year's work was

destroyed in one week of rains." "Crops come in waves but we're looking at the shortage going on for another two to three weeks, possibly extending to broccoli. "The rain also affected a lot of young plants so there are likely to be problems into winter across the board with brassicas. There's some way to go but crops that have been waterlogged, like Brussels spouts, it's not getting them off to the start they need to produce the quantities we would want to see." The supply chain has also been hampered by extreme temperatures in Europe and particularly here in Southern Spain, which would normally make up any shortfall in the UK. A Tesco spokeswoman said: "Recent wet weather has affected cauliflower growth in some parts of the country, but with our dedicated cauliflower growers based all across the UK, we continue to have a range of cauliflowers and cauliflower products in our stores."

Unexpected causes of food poisoning - and how to avoid them Illnesses caused by eating or drinking contaminated food or drinks is widespread with statistics showing many as 4.1 million Australians affected each

generate a heat resistant toxin. It's this toxin which can cause food poisoning symptoms. These include nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.

year. While people tend to take extra care with chicken, fish and meat, there are a range of other foods including pasta, pastries and fruit that can make you sick. This guide reveals five unexpected causes of food poisoning and the simple ways you can avoid it. 1. Cooked rice and pasta The Food Safety Information Council explains if you've become sick after eating cooked rice and pasta, you may have eaten food contaminated with Bacillus cereus. The germ is commonly found in soil and sometimes in foods that are grown close to the ground like grains and rice. The bug is considered harmless, however, it is resistant to cooking and problems can arise if foods are left to sit in warm, moist conditions. This is because the bacteria produce heat resistant spores, and if allowed to germinate,

2. Soups and gravies Clostridium perfringens is a less wellknown bacteria, but it's one which is responsible for stomach cramps and a mild form of diarrhoea. According to Good Food, the bug, one found broadly in nature, thrives in warm, moist and airless environments. Soups, stews, and gravies are perfect. 'Under these conditions, the bugs can produce toxic spores that can't be destroyed by further cooking.' the publication states. When consumed, the bug produces toxic spores in the gut, and it's this toxin which makes people unwell. 3. Fresh fruit Fruit such as rockmelon, watermelon and honeydew melon have a high risk of causing food poisoning. This is due to Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria which can grow on the rind and spread to the

flesh. The bug itself is found widely in soil, water and vegetation, and can be carried by pets and wild animals. 'A vegetable or fruit food product can become contaminated anywhere along the chain of food production: planting, harvesting, packing, distribution, preparation and serving,' The Conversation states. Symptoms of food poisoning by listeria include fever, muscle aches and gastrointestinal problems such as nausea and vomiting. 4. Cream pastries Staphylococcus aureus - or golden staph - doesn't originate from food as such, more it's passed on through poor food handling. The bug, which is present on hands and sometimes inside the nose, of around 25 per cent of the population doesn't cause illness in healthy people. However, those who carry the bacteria can contaminate food if they don't wash their hands before touching it. Food poisoning by Staphylococcus aureus - staph - manifests as a sudden

onset of nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps and diarrhoea. 5. Fresh fruit juice While fresh fruit juice is healthy and comes packed with vitamins, if left out of the fridge it can become a breeding ground for a range of bugs including E.coli. It's advised by Good Food to treat fresh juice as you would fresh milk and keep by keeping it in the fridge and thoroughly washing all juicing equipment. E.coli can cause cause diarrhoea, stomach pain, nausea and vomiting, lasting between five to ten days. Serious illnesses caused by the bacteria include pneumonia, meningitis in newborn babies and hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure. What are the four ways to prevent food poisoning? 1. Clean: Always apply the 20/20 rule: wash hands for 20 seconds with warm soapy water dry hands for 20 seconds before starting to cook repeat frequently especially after handling raw meats, or

vegetables with visible soil. 2. Chill: Poultry, dairy foods, vegetables, salad ingredients, etc should be refrigerated at or below 5ºC. Cooked food should be stored in covered containers and either put in the fridge to cool, or frozen immediately. Frozen foods should be defrosted in the fridge not on the kitchen bench. 3. Cook: Properly cooking food minimises the risk of food poisoning. This means cook chicken, minced or boned meats, hamburger, stuffed meats and sausages right through until they reach 75°C using a meat thermometer. 4. Separate: To avoid crosscontamination keep raw and cooked foods separate when storing and preparing. Food should be stored in covered containers in the fridge and put raw meats and poultry in the bottom of the fridge so the juices don’t contaminate food on lower shelves.

LinkedIn is joining the dark mode revolution

Hot on the heels of highlighting Facebook's upcoming dark

mode, Jane Manchun Wong discovered that LinkedIn is doing the same. The app researcher apparently found the unreleased dim color option while digging through the code for the Android app. She noted that this dark mode "appears to be in an early stage of development," since it's only showing up in some parts of the app and some dark text is still

displaying against a dark background. LinkedIn, which has been owned by Microsoft since 2016, didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. Google announced that an official dark mode is coming to Android Q and Apple revealed its dedicated dark mode for iOS 13, both of which are coming later this year.

Instagrammers can now create their own reality filters Facebook has recently opened Spark AR, a tool that lets Instagrammers create their own AR-powered effects, to the world as a public beta. Earlier this year at the Facebook F8 conference for developers, the company announced that soon anyone will be able to make AR-powered effects for Instagram with a tool called Spark AR Studio. While the tool was previously only available to select Instagrammers, yesterday it became accessible to everyone as a beta. According to the company, everyone can be a creator whether you are "a professional or have a limited tech background." Though Spark AR provides users with a library of

effects, sounds, and animations that can be patched together to create a filter, users can also insert their own sound files and objects to uniquely enhance their work.

There's additionally an Effect Galley that users can browse to find "niche AR effects from upand-coming artists." Once published to Instagram, Spark AR tracks a project's performance so that creators can

see the total impressions, captures, and shares made over various time periods. Anyone can search through the user-made AR filters by scrolling to the end of the available effects in the effects tray and tapping "Browse Effects." All AR experiences used on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and Portal were created using Spark AR Studio by company designers. Now, the brand's community can help bring their own AR flavor to the platform, too. While the tool is still in public beta, considering that Snapchat has also launched a similar platform that has proven popular among users, the Facebook-brand AR studio is likely here to stay.

Astronomers detect new repeating signals from deep space

One of the biggest mysteries out there in the Universe is inching closer to answers. An astonishing eight new repeating radio signals known as fast radio bursts (FRBs) have been detected flaring from deep space. At the start of 2019, just one of these mysterious signals, FRB 121102, was known to flash repeatedly. In January, scientists reported a second repeating one (FRB 180814). This new paper - available on preprint server arXiv, and accepted into The Astrophysical Journal Letters - describes eight new repeating signals detected by the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) radio telescope. This brings the known total of repeating FRBs to 10. It means we're starting to build a statistical database of repeaters, which could help astronomers to figure out what these signals actually are. Fast radio bursts are certainly perplexing. They are detected as spikes in radio data, lasting just a few milliseconds. But, in that time, they can discharge more energy than 500 million Suns. Most FRBs are only detected

once and can't be predicted, so tracing them back to their source is really tricky. That's why repeaters are so important. And the news that they are not as rare as we thought means it might be possible to trace more back to their source galaxies, and determine what kinds of environments they come from. We can also start looking for similarities and differences between repeating FRBs. "There is definitely a difference between the sources, with some being more prolific than others," physicist Ziggy Pleunis of McGill University told ScienceAlert. "We already knew from FRB 121102 that the bursts can be very clustered: sometimes the source doesn't burst for hours and hours and then suddenly you get multiple bursts in a short amount of time. We have observed the same thing for FRB 180916.J0158+65, for which we report ten bursts in this paper." On the other side of the scale, six of the FRBs reported in the paper only repeated once, and the longest pause between signals was over 20 hours. The eighth one (FRB 181119) repeated

twice after the initial detection, pinging a total of three times. We don't yet know what this means, but it could indicate - as hypothesised in a paper last month by Harvard-Smithsonian astrophysicist Vikram Ravi - that all FRBs are actually repeaters, but some are a lot more active than others. But there are similarities between FRBs, too. The individual bursts from repeaters seem to last a little bit longer than the bursts from one-off FRBs. That's pretty interesting. There's also the frequency drift. The first two repeaters - FRB 121102 and FRB 180814 - showed a downward drift in frequency, with each burst getting successively lower. Think of a sad trombone sound effect. Most of the eight new repeaters, also demonstrated this downward frequency drift. This could be a clue as to what's producing the signals. CHIME is optimised for monitoring a very broad swathe of the sky, across a lower range of frequencies than radio telescopes like ASKAP or the Parkes Observatory in Australia, which have also detected FRBs.

Run by expert beautician Meleah, the ‘CoolSculpting’ treatment is based on Cryolipolisis or fat freezing as it is also known. This is a new procedure taking Hollywood by storm and involves the non‐ invasive cooling of body fat to break down fat cells, resulting in a reduction of body fat without damage to other tissues. The effect takes several weeks to be seen but the results are permanent and can result in up to 40 percent fat loss in one session. The procedure is non‐invasive, there are no long‐ term or significant side effects and anaesthesia and pain medication are not needed. During the procedure: • A vacuum applicator is placed on the skin to bring it into contact with cooling panels. • Patients feel a cold sensation for a few minutes, as it produces an anaesthetic effect. • The fat is cooled for up to 45 minutes. This treatment is specially designed to reduce areas of stubborn fat; it can target the chin, upper arms, ‘bra fat’, back fat, abdomen, flanks, underneath, buttock and inner and outer thighs. The treatment is scientifically proven to use cooling technology to safely and effectively eliminate fat cells. The method of freezing triggers fat cells to die and the body then naturally eliminates these fat cells. Four areas can be treated at the same time and

one session takes around 45 minutes to an hour. The most crucial part of this treatment is the aftercare, this requires the client to drink 2‐3 litres of water per day to flush out the dead fat cells. Results can be seen two weeks post treatment although the client will continue to gradually eliminate fat for up to 12 weeks, as long as the aftercare advice is followed. All clients must complete a consultation form as well as read and sign a declaration before any treatment can be undertaken. Shaped by Meleah is the only local specialist to offer this unique treatment; until now it was the preserve of leading clinics in Marbella and Madrid. Those wishing to discuss the treatment further or book a consultation can contact Meleah directly to discuss which clinic they would like to attend and the times she has available. Shaped by Meleah is open from10am until 6pm Monday to Friday and there is some flexibility for evening and weekend appointments but, these are limited and restricted to one clinic. To contact Meleah call 603 157 404, email: shapedbymeleah@gmail.com or find her on facebook or Instagram at shaped_by_meleah. Additionally, if you are a professional beauty salon, fitness or wellness centre and wish to discuss with Meleah the opportunity of her offering this treatment from you premises, then contact her on the above details. Her current clinics are located in San Miguel and La Fuente Centre but, she is looking to widen her reach across the region.

Tom Ford brings chic perfection to skincare Tom Ford is infamously a control freak, but it's for good reason.. From resurrecting Gucci, a stint at YSL, to his own successfully-luxe eponymous line plus, of course, films, Ford has has proved his way or the highway truly works. Brand new to Tom Ford Beauty, which the designer launched with Estée Lauder in 2005, Tom Ford Research is the most formal realisation of the designer's obsession with perfection. Part skincare line part real-life research facility, the new project, focuses on a theory that it calls 'the Caffeine Effect,' an idea that is largely founded on the stimulant's ability to increase skin’s natural energy, boosts hydration, and leave it looking brought through promoting the movement of sodium ions. Through these studies, Tom Ford Research scientists formulated three key ingredients containing caffeine—white porcelain cacao, caffeine, and gyokuro (a type of green tea)—into two, unisex products meant to energise, refine, hydrate, and transform the skin. Launching in Europe later this year, Tom Ford Research's Serum and Crème Concentrate are the results of intense clinical studies and dermatologist testing to realise the designer's vision of perfect skin. Meant to be used successively, the products only require a small amount for radiant-energised-looking skin with diminished pores and fewer lines and wrinkles. In fact, over 96 percent of testers that used both claimed their skin felt softer and smoother after just one week.

Natural superfood sweetener Lucuma may just be the most powerful superfood you've never heard of. With its natural maple-like flavour and plethora of health benefits, the delicious and nutritious fruit is a favourite in its native countries Peru and Chile, and is slowly becoming more and more popular around the world. Lucuma powder is an excellent source of fibre, minerals, and beta-carotene (provitamin A). Just two tiny teaspoons of the powder offers two full grams of fibre — imagine how much you could add to your favourite smoothie or yogurt. The powder also boasts an impressive amount of potassium and calcium, which is always a plus if you're trying to supercharge your food with more minerals. If you're interested in adding lucuma powder to your drinks or dishes, you can try out some popular brands available online at Amazon. You might also try perusing your local vitamin or health food store to see if they carry any other lucuma powder options.

Worrying Number of Drivers Admit to Drink Driving

In an independent survey conducted by the RACE automobile association of Spain, as part of the European Fatigue Eurobarometer 2019, a worrying 14 percent of drivers on the roads of Spain claim to drive regularly under the influence of alcohol, endangering their lives and other road users. Although the survey results we are focussing on are about Spain in particular, as the survey was part of a European campaign it revealed that drivers from France, Austria, Switzerland and Italy stand out among those who ignore the dangers of alcohol more frequently.

It is also worth noting that Spain has one of the lower limits of maximum permitted alcohol across the continent, far lower than the UK. So, the best option, as always, is none for the road. For the data collated in the last full year, 2018, alcohol and/or other substances was found in 43% of drivers who died in road traffic incidents. Despite this figure, and worryingly similar, 44% of drivers on the roads of Spain acknowledge having consumed alcohol and then driving, and 14% admit to doing it as part of their normal routine. The average figures across Europe shows that of the 15 countries who took part in the survey, 43.6% admit to

How to Legalise an Electric Scooter We have explained previously difference between electric vehicles and which require registration and a driving licence. However, one question that is still arising is how one goes about registering a scooter. Legislation in Spain has been brought about through the need to comply with safety regulations implemented by the European Union. In other words, although the legislation is Spanish, it is driven by the requirements of Europe. The reason that this is important is that the scooter must have a European Certificate of Conformity in order to be registered in Spain. Some of the imported vehicles don´t have this and therefore are impossible to register, and so you must be very careful when purchasing the scooter.

The certificate will have an homologation code, such as e9*168/2013*11263*01, as an example, which the engineer will check to ensure that the vehicle meets the required safety standards. The certificate must be taken, along with the vehicle to the ITV station for a registration test. The vehicle itself will have a unique serial number, which will be engraved somewhere on the structure of the vehicle, and this will be checked to ensure it is the same as the certificate. The inspectors have a standard list of items to check and if satisfactory the ITV card will be produced and the vehicle registered at your local trafico office. The scooter must then undergo periodic tests based on the age of the vehicle.

driving having consumed alcohol, making Spain about average. The figures not only speak for themselves in revealing a worrying trend, what is also of concern is that many drivers are ignorant of the limits. Moreover, many drivers are more concerned about getting caught having consumed alcohol than the actual danger posed. Across Europe, 62% of drivers surveyed said that they are concerned about getting caught, a figure which is 50% in Spain, rather than acknowledging the risks that their actions pose. However, getting caught having consumed alcohol or drugs is in fact the lesser of evils, as the consequences of being involved in a serious or fatal incident whilst driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is something that many people now have to live with, having been responsible for causing deaths or serious injuries as a result.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT â– CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Answer me this - if you get done by a speed camera for speeding, do you blame the speed camera or yourself? Or if you get caught nicking something from the local corner shop and your face gets recognised on CCTV - do you blame the CCTV for the outcome? I'm assuming not, so why are people blaming VAR for all the bad in football as if it is VAR itself breaking the laws of the game?

VAR, and this is an opportune moment to point out VAR is not a thing in itself but a human sitting in a room watching about ten TV screens and making decisions based off the clear evidence in front of him, does not make the rules. I repeat, VAR does not make the rules. it is there to see whether the laws of the game have been broken and when VAR spots one being broken (whether you agree with the laws of the game or not) it is supposed to say something. You know, just like at the Etihad on Saturday night. We can argue until we are blue in the face about whether the current law around handball by an attacking player deliberate or otherwise leading to a goal being chalked off is fair or not. That's a completely different debate. What kind of needs to be kicked into touch like an Adrian clearance straight away is this whole "VAR is killing football" chat. It's not, it's really not. 'But last season it would have counted' cry some people. That was last season, mate. 20 odd years ago, your goalkeeper could have picked the ball up if it was passed back to him. Before that, your striker could get cleaned out when through on goal and the defender would only get a stern look from the referee. Things change, sometimes for the better. And, to be fair, it's about time the defending team got a couple of things going in their favour, right? After all, they are not allowed to tackle, touch or even breath on their opponents anymore. And with that rant slotted into the far corner as effectively as Gabriel Jesus' late, late non-winner against Spurs we can head to the home of the champions. Let's be honest - Spurs were terrible

and the Poch admitted enough after he'd stopped giggling at his good fortune as history repeated itself once again. Last season Sergio Aguero's bootlace being offside was the reason Spurs and not City progressed in the Champions League. This time it was the ball brushing Americ Laporte's arm on the way to Jesus who almost made his entrance look like another inspired change by Peppy G. Pep called it one of City's best performances in his time there which is curious, given the manner in which they conceded their goals. Sure, Raheem Sterling continues to look like the finest English player produced since Paul Gascoigne. Yes, Kevin de Bruyne whips in a deadly ball. But City stepped off the gas each time they led against Tottenham and paid the price when 'magic moments only' Lucas Moura equalised a mere 19 seconds after coming on the pitch. It's been an interesting week for the current Liverpool number one, Adrian. Called off the bench to concede Liverpool's only goal against Norwich a week ago, he became the hero of the UEFA Super Cup Final victory by saving Tammy Abraham's penalty in the shootout. His reward was to get cleaned out two-footed by a 'fan' meaning he was an injury doubt for the trip to Southampton - so much of a doubt that 35-year-old Andy Lonergan was grabbed out of the pub on again to be told he might actually play. Fortunately for the ex-Rochdale keeper, Adrian recovered just about enough to stand up between the sticks at St Mary's - just don't ask him to kick the ball, OK?

Even on one leg, Adrian looks like a significant upgrade on Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet and even Alisson conceded a goal of a similar ilk last season. A lot will be made of his blunder but the bigger point is that since Alisson went off injured at Anfield, Liverpool have not looked anywhere near as steady - even Virgil looks human. Liverpool took the three points home with them and no Southampton player really did enough to get themselves on Klopp's wishlist. Newcastle look utterly Pukked at Carrow Road as Teemu Pukki followed up his opening night goal with a hat-trick against Steve Bruce's hapless charges. Bruce's response? It could not have been any more Proper Football Man as he called the squad in for extra training on Sunday. I hope he made them run lots of laps as well, that'll learn them. Arsenal beat Burnley for about the 20th time in a row which is a surprising statistic given that Burnley are supposed to be exactly the type of team Arsenal struggle against. Yo-Pierre scored the winner after debutant Dani Ceballos ran the game from midfield. Sean Dyche was left thumbing through his 'irrelevant things to say after the match guide' and started moaning about players diving which was strange given that nobody dived at the Emirates - even Nick Pope. It seemed fitting that the first Frank Lampard's Chelsea goal scored at Stamford Bridge in the Frank Lampard era came from teacher's pet and super swot Mason Mount. Leicester will have been delighted to

Your week in sport A few key things came out of the Second Ashes Test at Lords. Forget the result, momentarily. You can even go as far as forgetting the weather. We witnessed one of the Ashes battles - Jofra Archer versus Steve Smith.

remove from the crease in this series until Archer was unleashed. Granted, Archer didn't actually get him out as such but for the first time since his return to the Test arena Smith didn't look like someone totally and utterly dangling England's bowling attack on puppet-like strings. That spell was brutal and it did end with Archer hitting Smith somewhat worryingly just below the ear - but this is not about that. For all the people immediately saying Archer was bowling dangerously, unfairly, unsportingly, whatever - hush your noise and go and watch Robin Smith bobbing and weaving in the 80s and then go back even earlier and watch the guys that used to bat without a lid on uncovered pitches.

Is there anyone out there still wondering whether Archer can easily transition from white-ball to red-ball cricket? If there are, they are fools. Smith has been virtually impossible to

I am not downplaying the Smith injury at all - how he got up I do not know and the fact he was ruled out the following day was completely expected. But, batsmen are more protected than ever nowadays - armour, pitches and bowling regulations mean that it is very much in the batter's favour compared to how it used to be. So to see a proper battle like this - the closest thing to Don Bradman Australia

have had facing the closest thing to Michael Holding England have had - was thrilling Test cricket and bodes well for the rest of the series. Justin Langer did say Australia would look to tire Archer - the fact that he just got quicker and quicker the longer his spells went on will have been noticed by the Aussies. As for the rest of it - well, it briefly looked like England might get themselves level. But let's not hide from the fact that if you take Archer and Ben Stokes out of that match and there's not a great deal to get excited about in the England camp. Jason Roy needs more time and we hope we can work out how to become a Test player. Joe Root is proving why he thinks he is better at four. Joe Denly loves a pretty 20-odd just like James Vince did - and he needs to convert them into something of more substance. Jos Buttler looks a bit lost, despite digging in pretty well with Stokes on Day Four and the early part of the last day and Jonny Bairstow looked like he might just be remembering how to bat.

come away with a point and could have easily had all three had James Maddison not missed an absolute sitter - but Chelsea have now been OK-to-good in the first-half of each of their three games this season and fallen off a cliff in the second. Something going on at half-time? Sheffield United and Crystal Palace somehow ended up on Sky on Sunday - the first of the "we've got to let them on TV at some point" matches of the season. Aaron Wan Bissaka must have been incredibly important to how Palace play because they were terrible at Bramall Lane and Chris Wilder can celebrate the first win of what will be a very long season in the Steel City. Aston Villa have been what we can only describe as 'active' over the summer bringing in no less than 12 players. The one who was the least gambley-gamble type in that haul was keeper Tom Heaton, so gaffer Dean Smith will have been delighted to see him needlessly bring down Bournemouth's Callum Wilson after 90 seconds into his Villa Park Premier League debut. Douglas Luiz feels like more a diceroll and he showed both sides of his coin - he gave away Bournemouth's second and then scored a stunner late in the game to give the Cherries a few nervous moments towards the end. Brighton coulda/shoulda won against West Ham at the Amex. VAR was involved again, but you might not have heard about this one because, you know, it wasn't a big match. Brighton are yet to lose under Graham Potter whereas West Ham are yet to win this season - which is pretty standard for August. The Marco Silva Derby was as dull as the irritating attempts to turn this into a rivalry suggests. Everton won, if you are interested enough to care.

â– CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com But that strong point England used to hide behind - that middle order. Not so much right now. It's clear the rest of this series is going to come down to whether (a) Smith plays in the next Test and (b) if he does how quickly can we get him out? From there, it's all down to the x-factor Archer brings to the party and which bowling attack controls the conditions. It's a great series for England to win from here!

Presentation 16th July 2019 Held at Domino´s Bar Restaurant This was the first summer season for the Costa Blanca League. It was quite a battle to the end of the season, where Amigos Belgas played Domino McCoy´s for the 1st and 2nd position. Amigos Belgas won the match to take 1st position, McCoy´s 2nd. Also, a tight match between Domino Knights and Pumas for the 3rd position, where Pumas came through fighting. All were awarded medals. For the first season of the new league, it was an enjoyable one. Well done to all who took part.

Results for w/c 12.8.19 With a huge contribution from our latest recruits Nick and Rachel Lee, Mike Mahony and myself found ourselves on the winning team in Monday’s ‘2 from 4 and all on the par 3’s’. With an impressive score of 105 points, we were 7 points short of the winning team’s record set back in 2016 (which Mike also happened to be a part of). I have a very strong feeling Nick and Rachel won’t be playing off today’s handicaps for much longer! Wednesday’s Stableford provided two major surprises. Not only did Ron Percival make it onto the leader board today but he won with 41 points! Apologies for no ‘photo of Ron but his agent wouldn’t allow us to include it without payment for publishing rights. (Plus he’s a bit camera shy.) Dave Pulling took silver with 38 and was closely followed by (our handicap secretary) Bryan Neal, who came in with 37 points. John Shervell was also in the hunt with 35 points. Bryan commented

afterwards ‘that’s the first game this year that I’m going to have cut myself!’Two ‘2’s today, one going to guest Jamie Conway and the other to Rachel Lee (yes, she had been cut 2 shots from Monday.) The winners of Friday’s ‘Bowmaker’ were Terry Field, Ken and Liz Robertson and our guest for a few weeks, Eileen Moriarty. A great score of 114 points was enough to see them home. Of course it does help when Terry manages to score 5 birdies! Rachel and Nick Lee were in the money yet again as, together with Alan Douglas and ‘Albert’, they scored 112 points. For any of our readers scratching their heads, a ‘Bowmaker’ is played in teams of four with the best three scores to count on each hole. Por ultimo, Ken Robertson says to caddy ‘That can’t be my ball, it’s too old.’ Caddy replies ‘It’s been a long time since we teed off, sir.’ Pues hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell

The councillor was accompanied by Irene Celdrán, president of AECC Orihuela, and by María del Carmen Cámara, widow of Miguel Ángel Tomás, who came up with the idea of the event. Miguel Ángel Tomás was a teacher in several educational centres in Orihuela and practiced golf for 30 years of his life. “I thought it might be interesting to create a tournament in memory of my husband, and I began to mature the idea. Now it is a reality and the fundamental thing is that we will help AECC Orihuela,” said Cámara. Irene Celdrán thanked the Department of Sports for their support, and Maria del Carmen Cámara for

thinking of the charity. AECC Orihuela has been running since 1953 helping people affected by cancer and their families. The tournament will be played in Stableford Individual mode and will feature various categories. In the men’s competition there will be 1st category (up to handicap 12.4) and 2nd category (handicap from 12.5 to 24); in women’s there will be only one category. In addition to the awards ceremony, a raffle of gifts will be made for all participants. Registration will be open until Wednesday, 28th August and can be made at the Villamartín Golf Club, either by email: golfvillamartin@grupoquara.com or by calling: 96 676 51 70. The price will be 25 euros for members and 45 for nonmembers. Those who wish to may also make a financial contribution to the Santander Bank account ES45 0049 6079 3325 1615 4719. “I encourage all golf fans to participate in this new tournament, because we can help many people through the sport. I thank the Chamber and AECC for organising it, ” Councillor Bernabéu concluded.
