Air Force plane crashes off La Manga the Air Force Display Team ‘Eagle Patrol’ at San Javier Miitary Air Academy, has plummeted into the sea about four kilometres off La Manga. At the moment, vessels from the Copla Emergency Plan have activated a level 1 rescue and are mobilised in search of the pilot who had managed to eject, while the causes of the accident are still unknown.

An Air Force plane crashed into the sea a few kilometres off La Manga yesterday morning. Sources from the City Council in San Javier and the Academy of the Air

Force are aware of the accident and confirmed that the craft was a C-101 reactor. The Councillor for Transparency, Citizen Participation and Public Administration, Beatriz Ballesteros, said that the pilot managed to eject from the aircraft before the crash. However, at time of going to press the crew were still missing at sea. The 112 Emergency Coordination

Centre for the Murcia region has confirmed that around a hundred calls were received alerting authorities to the incident, indicating that "a fighter plane has fallen from the sky and crashed into the sea." The Mayor of San Javier, José Miguel Luengo, has also confirmed the plane crash. He explained that the plane, a C101, 'hunter' type, which is often used by

Craft fair in Aspe Every two years the small town of Aspe holds a fair at the beginning of September. Two years ago the Town Hall changed it into an authentic craft fair, with demonstrations of traditional crafts, workshops for children and lots of entertainment. The event was so successful that they decided to offer the same this year with live craft demonstrations, puppet shows, stiltwalkers and in the evenings fire juggling. The fair will be held in the lovely Plaza Mayor, on 7th and 8th September, in the shade of enormous trees and a backdrop of old buildings and beautiful arches. About 20 craftsmen and women will not only set

up shop to sell their work, but will actually be at work during the fair to show the love and attention they give to each item they make. For younger visitors there will be lots of activities to

enjoy, including puppet shows, workshops, old fashioned games and story-telling. A local potter and several local lace makers will participate and Amata, the craft association organising the market, has arranged demonstrations of glass blowing, forging and weaving, as well as some 20 stalls with a wide range of hand made goods for all tastes. You can choose from ceramics and pottery, beautifully hand-made bags, soft toys and small furniture made of recycled wood. There will be several stalls with unique jewellery in alpaca, macramé, porcelain, ceramics and even recycled beer cans. The stall of Francisco Martinez deserves a special mention, because he makes miniatures of most of the regional products: pallets for the transport of marble (complete with slabs of marble!) and small crates with "uva embolsada" which might look a bit strange if you don't know what they are about. When you drive through the area you will see many vineyards full of white bags: these are put around the white grapes to protect them from bad weather and to delay the ripening so the grapes are at their best around New Year. Because it is a Spanish tradition to eat 12 grapes at midnight: one at each strike of the clock. The Town Hall has asked Amata again to organise the event, because the regional craft association guarantees that everything on sale in

the fair is made by the participants: nothing comes from a factory or is imported, all is made by hand and often at the fair itself by the person who visitors see on the stall. The fair opens on Saturday 7th of September at 11 o'clock with music and cabezudos; opening times, both Saturday and Sunday, will be from

11am till 2pm and then again from 5pm till 10pm or later. Aspe is a small town 12kms from Elche and 6km from Novelda, and has a lovely old town centre. In the Tourist Office, only 50 yards from the fair, visitors will find a map of the town with several nice walks in and around the town, all clearly indicated. Aspe can be reached easily, both from the A7 and the A31 motorway. For further information, in English, call 639 979 678 or see photographs of the fair that Amata organised at Aspe in 2017 at http://www.amata.es/Aspe_17.html

La Vuelta hits town

Saturday 24 August saw Torrevieja host the start of La Vuelta a España with a team time trial of 13.4 kilometres. The start ramp was located in Las Salinas de Torrevieja, the Natural Park while the finish was in the town itself. Colombia’s Miguel Ángel López led home the Astana team to secure the first red jersey of the race in what turned out to be a dramatic opening team time trial. Astana finished with a time of 14 minutes, 51 seconds over an 8.33 mile flat, urban circuit on the streets of Torrevieja. The team ended two seconds in front of Deceuninck-Quick Step, and five ahead of Team Sunweb. There was disappointment for prestage favourites Jumbo-Visma as five riders from the eight-man team came off their bikes after encountering a patch of water on the road; which oddly enough was blamed on a leaking paddling pool near to the course!

Jumbo-Visma’s leaders Primoz Roglic and Steven Kruijswijk are two of the favourites for the general classification, but they already have ground to make up after the crash. The team regrouped to limit their deficit to 40 seconds at the end of the 13.4km race against the clock. Of the 176 riders participating in La Vuelta 19 from the spectacular Salinas de Torrevieja Dimension Data were the first to start, just before 7pm. They set the first time of 15’25” and held the lead for about ten minutes, until it was bettered by CCC Team which clocked 15’06”. Tejay Van Garderen’s EF Education First were the first to break the 15 minute barrier with a time of 14’58”. Team Sunweb then rode even better: 14’56”, enough for them to finish on the podium, but not to fend off Astana (14’51”).

Storm season advice

The Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, has shown ‘surprise and disbelief’ at the statements made at a recent press conference by Los Verdes, in which they assured that there is a project already done and budget approved for the present year 2019 of 1,769,061 euros for the “resurfacing and repair of the Paseo de La Mata”. The Mayor branded the claims as “lies” and “falsehoods” and accused Los Verdes of not telling the truth to the media and trying to deceive the citizens of Torrevieja. The Mayor has documented that there is no project already carried out by the previous government team, since it has been the current Popular Party government who, two weeks ago, in the Local Government Board, approved the drafting of the draft resurfacing and repair of the Paseo de La Mata, for an amount of 40,189 euros, and that of the Dique de Levante, for an amount of 42,235 euros. Therefore, it is only now that the project will be drafted to complete the La Mata works. The mayor said it is amazing that Los Verdes, who have been in the government team for the past four years, have no record of the Continued on page 5

Spain’s Civil Protection squad has issues a series of recommendations in light of forecast storms and flash floods across the country. The Costa Blanca south has already experienced several torrential rainfalls over the last week or so and another is forecast for today (Tuesday 27th August)

The volunteer rescue and emergency service has said that the northern parts of Aragón and Catalunya, all of Madrid, and most of the Comunidad Valenciana, Murcia and Castilla-La Mancha have been on 'yellow' or 'orange' alerts for torrential rain, thunder and lightning since yesterday and will be until at least midnight Wednesday. Recent flash floods in the provinces of Alicante and Castellón caused road blockages and left cars trapped.

The Civil Protection advises residents and visitors to keep an eye on official forecasts on TV, radio and social media, and in areas where very heavy rain is on the cards, to avoid going out on foot or by car if possible. Drivers should take extra precautions when parking and ensure they are nowhere near a river or a flood plain, since if the water level rises and the car is swept away, it could dam up the flow and cause it to burst its banks, with disastrous consequences. Those who cannot avoid going out in their cars should try to stick to motorways or main roads and avoid country lanes, not to stop anywhere near water, and to proceed as slowly as possible. Sticking to higher ground is the safest option, whether driving or parking. Civil Protection volunteers also advise keeping away from open, flat areas, tall trees, or hilltops if thunder and lightning appear, and to stay away from electrical wires or anything metal. Seeking refuge in or near a building, but avoiding anywhere the air flows in – which includes keeping windows shut – is recommended. The safest place during an electric storm is inside a car with the windows shut, as the rubber tyres 'earth' the lightning.

New British Ambassador Hugh Elliott arrives in Spain Hugh Elliott, a member of the UK’s Diplomatic Service since 1989, succeeds Simon Manley as Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Spain and nonresident Ambassador to Andorra. The Ambassador takes up this new role having previously been Director of Communications in the Department for Exiting the European Union. On his arrival, Hugh Elliott said: “With a wealth of cultural, commercial, and people-to-people links, the relationship between the UK and Spain is like no other, and I am proud and honoured to represent my Queen and country here in Spain.” For the Ambassador, this strong connection with Spain has been an important part of his life for decades. “I met my wife Toñi while working as an English teacher at the University of Salamanca, Spain was my first diplomatic posting in the nineties and my two children were born in Madrid. I can understand why so many UK nationals have chosen to make Spain their home,” he said. He added that “We are approaching an important milestone as the UK prepares to leave the European Union on 31 October”. His message was one of reassurance to UK nationals currently living in Spain that “We’ve given EU citizens living in the UK the legal certainty of their right to live and remain in the United Kingdom. And I’m very pleased that the Spanish Government has put in place, through the Royal Decree, the same guarantees for British citizens in Spain.” Mr Elliott acknowledged that people have

questions and concerns, and undertook that he and his team would be working hard to answer them. He also urged people to sign up to the Living in Guide (gov.uk/living-in-spain) where they will find the latest, accurate information on Brexit. Two key actions that UK nationals should do now is to ensure that they are correctly registered as a resident and registered for healthcare as a resident. A video message from Hugh Elliott to UK nationals can be found at https://www.facebook.com/BritsInSpain/videos/ 1100205536841750/ Mr Elliott can be followed on Twitter @HughElliottUK.

La Vuelta crash The support car of the Euskadi Murias La Vuelta team suffered a car accident in the early afternoon on Saturday when it was following the cyclists on a reconnaissance tour prior to the 13-kilometer time trial that kicked off the Spain Cycling Tour in Torrevieja. The accident has occurred at the confluence of Diego Ramirez Avenue and Orihuela Street. Luckily, despite the large number of people who were already in the street to witness the time trial at about five in the afternoon, and the violence of the smash, there were no personal injuries.

Almoradi building collapse Part of the ground floor of what until a few years ago was the Municipal Professional Conservatory of Almoradí and converted into municipal rehearsal rooms for local groups has sunk. No one was injured in the incident since it happened at dawn. In the afternoon, one of the 14 groups that rehearse in the facilities found the damage to the 42-yer-old building. After being reported to the Local Police, officers sealed the area to prevent access. In total, this collapse has affected four of the seven rooms of the building.

Smokeless beaches for Torrevieja Has Los Verdes announced a motion presented by the group to investigate the possibility of "Beaches without smoke" to improve the sanitary and environmental conditions. The Greens claim that approximately 14 percent of beach waste comes from cigarette butts, which can also take up to 10 years to degrade and is an initiative that is being launched in other municipalities such as Cullera and Oropesa, and in more than 118 beaches of the state and 80 coastlines. In the words of Los Verdes spokeswoman Carmen Morate: "This is a motion that aims to improve the life of Torrevieja citizens as are all the proposals presented by this political group, remembering that in other municipalities it has been the PP itself that has presented or put it into effect." The deputy spokesman Israel Muñoz explained: “The intention is twofold since not only the study of the creation of these beaches is requested, but also the work on the implementation of public awareness programs for the environmental impact of ciggarette butts on the beaches and the natural environment.”

The majority of our readers will be familiar with the tragic situation of local young woman Tasha Lynch. At the age of just 23 years old the La Marina resident was struck down with two very rare viruses, Myasthenia Gravis and Transverse Myelitis. With Myasthenia Gravis, the immune system blocks the communication between nerves and the muscles. Transverse myelitis is an inflammation of the spinal cord, a major part of the central nervous system. The spinal cord carries nerve signals to and from the brain through nerves that extend from each side of the spinal cord and connect to nerves elsewhere in the body. Both these incurable diseases attack the autoimmune system by attacking its own body and healthy tissue and in simple terms the nerves are not telling the muscles what to do. This then can lead to issues with mobility, eating, swallowing breathing and speaking. Tasha is currently being fed through a

tube and also has a tracheotomy which allows her to breathe. Tasha needs a cocktail of medication everyday in addition to specialist care and her Dad Andy gets no official financial support to provide these and is calling on the community to help him raise funds to cover some of the considerable cost. This could be by holding a fund raising event or making a personal donation. A fund has been set up via Tash’a facebook page or through: www.paypal.me/nlynch93 Tasha said: “Since becoming poorly, as a household we have lost two fulltime incomes as obviously I can no longer work and my stepmum has to stay home with me while my Dad works. This has put a huge financial strain on us, so any help at all is much needed and greatly appreciated.” Some of themedications are subsidised on Tasha’s SIP card but the family still has to pay the remainder. Others aren’t subsidised at all and neither are any of the supplements Tasha has to take for her

News ‘mito cocktail` which was prescribed by the specialist team that assessed Tasha in the USA. The ‘mito cocktail’ is vital in helping to slow the progression of Tasha’s condition. The family also has to pay towards the

Tasha Lynch

care provided by Jennifer Cunningham nurses for the part time care Tasha needs

whilst Andy is at work, on weekday mornings. The company subsidises Tasha’s care and also holds its own fundraisers to raise money towards this on the families behalf. However, Andy still has to pay 200e a month and a set hourly rate on top if Tasha needs additional assistance. Her medication costs vary depending on what she needs as often she will need extras such as antibiotics, steroids or painkillers. The family also has outgoing costs for items like catheter bags – Tash, who is an absolute whizz on the Ipad orders her own specific sterile bag to try help reduce her infections, nutritional supplies for her feeding tube and she also has to have a certain type of dressing for her central line as she’s allergic to the ones the hospital uses. Tasha has just come back out of hospital after contracting sepsis, which to someone in Tasha’s condition is life threatening. Also her kidneys aren’t great and the family have recently found out she now has some cerebral degeneration too. However, despite everything she faces and battles on a daily basis, Tasha does so with a smile and loves communicating with people via the internet.

Benidorm calls for scam ban Benidorm Town Hall has requested that the Spanish government outlaw the ‘shell game’ after a Brit tourist was battered in head for warning elderly passersby about the scam. The three political parties elected to Benidorm’s Town Hall have united to request Spain’s Congress outlaw the roadside ‘shell game’. The Popular Party (PP), Spanish Socialist Worker’s Party (PSOE) and Citizens (Cs) held a meeting last Thursday (23rd August) to demand the government modify the Penal Code and tackle the ‘fraudulent’ practice. It comes after Brit tourist Nathan Smith, 23, was battered in the head for alerting elderly passersby to the con. The ‘shell game’ involves a conman hiding a pea beneath one of three halved potato pieces as unwitting passersby bet money on where it is. However, but game masters use sleight

of hand and trickery to cheat passersby out of up to €50 in cash. Benidorm has tried for 30 years to rid its streets of the game, according to minutes from the Town Hall meeting, but awareness campaigns have not been successful. Police are powerless as the shell game fraudsters are not committing a crime. Gambling is illegal, but as passersby place the bets, it is they who are breaking the law – not the conman taking the money. The motion was expected to be debated in Spain’s Congress yesterday as the Costa Blanca People went to press. Minutes from the meeting recorder a councillor stating: “We need quick proceedings and effective legal measures to eradicate this fraudulent activity from our streets. The shell game damages Benidorm’s image and our tourism industry.”

Spain issues international health alert over listeriosis outbreak intensive care. So far, one person has died from the outbreak: a 90-year-old woman who passed away in the early hours of Monday in a Seville hospital. In other regions, the most important case involves a “premature newborn whose

mother consumed pork meatloaf in a bar in Madrid in July,” the Health Ministry announced. Listeriosis is a bacterial infection that can cause severe illnesses such as sepsis, meningitis and encephalitis, and can even be fatal. Those most at risk are the elderly, unborn babies and newborns, or people whose immune systems are compromised. The infection can also cause gastroenteritis and fever. It is primarily transmitted, as in this current outbreak in Spain, by the ingestion of contaminated foods. The severity of the crisis has prompted the Andalusian regional

premier, Juan Manuel Moreno, to cut short his summer vacation in order to preside over a government committee that will be monitoring the outbreak. On 14th August, Seville City Council, run by the Socialist Party (PSOE), took the “precautionary” measure of halting production at the Magrudis factory. From that same day onward, the Andalusian regional government – which is in the hands of the conservative Popular Party (PP) and center-right Ciudadanos, with the support of far-right Vox – limited itself to ordering the meatloaf products off the shelves but allowed for the continued sale of other products from the company. Supermarkets such as Alcampo, meanwhile, withdrew all of the firm’s products from its shelves. The regional government waited until Wednesday of last week before ordering all products from Magrudis to be taken off the market. These include lomos, a kind of preserved pork loin, and chicharrones, or pork belly. Experts such as José Juan Rodríguez, a professor in nutrition and bromatology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, have expressed surprise at the decisions taken by the regional government. “With the existing evidence that points to the contamination of the meatloaf

having taken place in the factory, it would have been recommendable to withdraw all of the [company’s] products,” he said.

Delay The regional government also waited five days before taking the meatloaf off the market, despite being aware on 9th August that two samples analyzed had returned a “highly positive” result. The Junta, as the regional government is known, admitted on Wednesday to a “two or three” day delay, but regional official Elías Bendodo blamed this on Seville City Hall, accusing the municipal laboratory that carries out such analyses for the Junta of having mixed up the meat samples, something that the local authority denies. City Hall has defended its management of the crisis and has insisted that the samples of meat from different companies that it received were incorrectly labeled. The acting health minister, María Luisa Carcedo, waded into the controversy after stating that some procedures must have failed for the outbreak to become the biggest ever seen in Spain. “There will now have to be inspections and probes, which will have to be carried out by the civil servants in the Andalusian Junta, because this is a regional competence,” she said. “And we will find out where the failure was. But obviously [a failure] has taken place because the established procedures are designed so that this does not happen.”

Local rescue centre battles to save 3,800 calves The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre, near Rojales, has started a petition to save 3,800 young cows on a livestock carrier denied permission to dock in Cartagena to collect life-saving food supplies. Centre founder, Sue Weeding, said the cows will ‘starve’ if the ship is not allowed to dock. The Julia MK boat was due to dock on Monday at 8pm, but a legal dispute between the shipping company and a fuel company has seen the boat left helpless in the Atlantic. An official for Spain’s Ship Agency Department said the Julia AK livestock carrier has been ‘denied authorisation’ to dock in Spanish territorial waters. The letter continues a ‘court order’ has blocked the ship, which is travelling from Rio Grande in Brazil to Derince Koceali in Turkey. A spokesperson for the Lebanese company who own the ship explained that there is only enough food to last until the official docking time. The food is there waiting for the cattle and the court issue is going to be solved, but may take a few days to be done. But the problem is the cows cannot wait that long to eat and they risk dying from starvation.

An outbreak of listeriosis in Spain caused by meat produced by a firm in the southern Spanish province of Seville is now having international repercussions. The country’s Health Ministry has activated alert and communication systems with the European authorities and the World Health Organisation (WHO) “given the possibility that cases might be detected in other countries.” The move, according to ministerial sources, is a precaution in case any tourists visiting the country may have contracted the infection after consuming contaminated products in Spain. So far there have been no registered cases outside of the country. The current outbreak of the bacterial infection has its source in pork meatloaf – known in Spanish as carne mechada – sold under the brand name La Mechá, and produced by the Seville-based company Magrudis S.L.. The health chief in Andalusia, Jesús Aguirre, confirmed that there are 132 cases in the southern Spanish region, as well as four more in neighbouring Extremadura, and three in each of the following regions: Catalonia, Asturias and Aragón. The total number of infections currently stands at 145, with the number of suspected cases – i.e. people with symptoms compatible with listeriosis but who are yet to be positively diagnosed – as high as 529. A total of 53 people – including 23 pregnant women – are currently hospitalised in Andalusia due to the bacterial infection, three of whom are in

Homes, volunteers and donations wanted Torrevieja´s animal shelter (Albergue Municipal de Animales) is urgently in need of homes and volunteers to help lost and abandoned cats. This could hopefully be adoption but if not, fostering is also very beneficial while a cat waits to find its forever home. Shelter life can be very distressing for theses animals, especially older cats who have been accustomed to a home and have been abandoned for reasons such as death or illness. Many of the cats crave human attention and having volunteers come in every day gives them an opportunity to get this affection. Life can also be boring in the shelter,

especially for young and active cats. So playing is also beneficial. Alongside the adult cats, there are many kittens that will bond very

quickly with a new family. However, if they are not adopted or fostered quickly, again the volunteers are vital in socialising the kittens so that when prospective adopters come into the Centre, the kittens are not nervous. The volunteer role is vital in providing someone to spend time with them, keeping them socialised and ensuring that they are ready for adoption when the right person comes to the centre. If you think you can help, either by adopting, fostering or volunteering, please visit the shelter between 10 am and 2 pm from Monday to Friday, or between 9am and 1pm on Saturdays and Sundays. The shelter is located in Avenida Los Nénufares, which is just off the CV905 close to Habaneras shopping centre. Take the slip road for the Police and Fire stations and turn right immediately past the Fire Station. The shelter is on the left at the end. Donations are also beneficial: towels, bedding, pillows, cat litter and, of course, monetary donations. Food donations are also helpful, but check with the shelter first regarding the types needed. FACUA and police warn of hoax calls and messages

Consumer organisations and police have warned of another round of phone scams and hoaxes, including calls with a Chile country prefix and WhatsApp messages telling users not to eat pork. FACUA-Consumers in Action said on Twitter: “Whether or not they have spelling mistakes [usually a giveaway sign that a message is a hoax or virus] never pass on food alerts via WhatsApp unless they come with a link to a reliable source.” It says a viral message has gone round warning users not to eat any pork products, in light of a listeria outbreak in Sevilla which has affected at least 155 people, including a baby, and claimed the life of a 90-year-old woman. Andalucia regional health authorities have withdrawn all products from sale which come from the firm whose meat has caused the outbreak, but no other official warnings have been released. The WhatsApp message reads: “Latest news on the listeria case. Do not eat pork products until the issue of where they come from has been clarified. It appears they come from an abattoir in Sevilla. This is being investigated. This has been communicated to us this afternoon.” A punctuation error – a space between 'case' and the full stop – gives

a clue that the message is a fake, and who the 'us' in the last line is has not been made clear. As health authorities have pointed out, the only meat affected is by the brand 'La Mechá', owned by the firm Magrudis, and production of it was stopped in May but was still being consumed recently because it had a use-by date of three months from manufacture. The Trade Federation for Meat Industries (FECIC) says national consumption of any kind of meat is not affected. Meanwhile, National Police have warned phone users not to answer calls with a country prefix of 0056 – for Chile – unless they know someone who lives there, then they should check the number corresponds with that of their relative or friend, or contact them via other means to see if they have rung. Calls are normally made between 16.00 and 23.00 mainland Spain time (15.00 and 22.00 in the Canary Islands), claiming a family member has been kidnapped and demanding a ransom. “However realistic it sounds, don't fall for it, don't pay, and do report it,” National Police say on Twitter. “Don't fall for this blackmail – it's what is known as a 'virtual kidnap'. Stay calm and call us on 091.”

Digital police technology for Torrevieja The Councillor for Security, Federico Alarcón (PP), has announced the tender for the contract to award the supply of Tetra digital communication equipment for the Local Police of Torrevieja. Currently only a small number of officers of the total of 160 use digital technology for their communications in the city. The rest continue to work with analog technology and conventional stations. These are very unsecure because data can be captured with relative ease and most local police forces left this outdate technology behind almost ten years ago. The contract includes a lease with the option to purchase for four years with a

downward bid amount of 300,000 euros. The supply includes more than two hundred Tetra communication units, about twenty stations for patrol cars, also digital, and accessories such as headphones and mics.

I don’t think I am an Alcoholic, but I am aware I am drinking too much wine and I want to cut down. I go out socially a fair bit. I decided to not drink at all for a while - it was very boring, and I didn't have any fun. I am depressed when I can’t go out and drink with my friends.

In the past I have given my children money whenever they have asked for it - thousands and thousands over the years. Now I only hear from them when they want something, and they only stay on the line for a very short while - time enough for me to make a transfer. I know I have brought this upon myself, but how can I change things now?

You don't have to cut alcohol out completely. If you switch to cider there are some bottled supermarket brands that are not as potent as wine, for instance. Or, try switching to lager. Also, if you can get fit and do some regular vigorous exercise, this will help you enormously. Exercise produces endorphins and will make you feel good without feeling the need to drink alcohol so much. Perhaps suggest to your friends that you do a weekly exercise class together. Addiction to alcohol can creep up a person over time, and it can be difficult to control the habit. If you want to enjoy the odd drink and not have give up alcohol entirely, then you can make some small changes now.

This is going to be tough I am afraid. You have got yourself and your children into bad habits, and I am sorry to say that they may not have much respect for you if they know you are such an easy touch. As for wanting to change things now, you can tell them that the last hand-out will absolutely have to be the last, because you simply do not have the money to spare. You must stress that you know they will understand, and you are certain that because they love you, they would not want you to endure any personal hardship.

Passengers injured on Spanish flight Fourteen people were injured when a flight operated by Spanish charter airline Evelop from Mauritius to Madrid hit severe turbulence, the company has said. The Airbus 330 aircraft landed safely at

CostaBlancaPeople 27th August - 2nd September 2019

Madrid airport after suffering a 15-second episode of clear air turbulence which caused the plane to drop 100 metres (328 feet), Evelop said in a statement. Fourteen people suffered light bruises and were taken to local hospitals for treatment, it added. They were all discharged on the same day. Three flight attendants were among the injured, an Evelop spokesman said. One passenger, who gave only her first name, Mar, told news radio Cadena Ser that the plane "plunged like when you are at a fairground attraction."

"We saw many passengers fly literally over the seats, some hit the ceiling, others the seats beside them," she added. The airline said the seat belt warning activated before the plane flew into the turbulence zone. Clear air turbulence is turbulence that occurs in otherwise calm, clear blue skies, without any visual indication such as clouds. Evelop, which is based in Spain's Balearic Islands, operates short and long haul flights out of Spain and Portugal on behalf of tour operators.

GBP / EUR UPDATE There was some good news for the pound in the ecostats this week. Retail sales increased 0.2% in July against a predicted fall by the same amount and UK house prices rose 1.2% in the year to August, with turnover stronger than usual for the month. The CBI Industrial Trends Survey also exceeded expectations; it came in at -13 for August, ten points above forecast and 21 higher than the previous month. However, while it was better than expected, the accompanying report highlighted that orders were “below normal” and pointed to the ongoing uncertainty over Brexit as the cause despite Minister Michael Gove dismissing the impact of a no-deal Brexit as "bumps in the road.” Regarding Brexit, Boris Johnson’s government is forging ahead. European Council President Donald Tusk dismissed Boris Johnson’s letter, confirming that the Irish backstop was a non-negotiable element but the PM was undeterred. He met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French premier Emmanuel Macron this week and received a similar response. The outcome of the meetings was largely as expected; sterling was down 0.25% on the day against the euro, yen and US dollar after the meeting with Merkel but in general, the outcome of those meetings were as expected and investors didn’t react. It’s clear that the market is watching the negotiations closely as the clock runs down to the deadline and it’s likely that any developments that may arise from the G7

meeting in Biarritz this weekend, either in the form of a Brexit breakthrough or future opportunities for trade, will be considered significant when the market reopens next week. Politics also came into play for the euro after the resignation of Italy’s Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte but the response from investors was muted because it had been expected. There was more of a reaction to the discussion over economic stimulus and the future actions of the European Central Bank (ECB). Finnish central bank governor Olli Rehn suggested in an interview with the Wall Street Journal that the ECB will reveal a "significant and impactful" policy package next month. However, it was not only the ECB that is considering stimulus; German finance minister Olaf Scholz indicated that an extra €50 billion of government spending could be mobilised if required. This is a level similar to the injection delivered during the financial crisis. The euro moved lower after Rehn’s comments about the ECB but there was no particular response to the extent of Germany’s plans. When it came to the euro, investors appeared more focused on the numbers than politics or future plans. Inflation came in lower than expected as prices fell 0.5% between June and July. This moved headline inflation down from 1.3% to 1.0% which sent the euro lower, although that was in part due to the fact that it had risen ahead of the announcement, suggesting investors expected better news.

Petrol and diesel prices fall for third week running Petrol and diesel prices have been dropping now for three consecutive weeks – welcome news at a time of year when Spanish residents and foreign visitors are more likely to take their holidays. It is not clear whether the trend is expected to continue, but is already unusual for the time of year, given that summer is when fuel prices typically rise. Based upon last week, petrol prices

per litre have fallen by 0.68% and diesel by 0.66%, averaging €1.312 and €1.20 per litre respectively, according to the European Union's Fuel Bulletin released yesterday (Thursday). This means a typical 55-litre car fuel tank costs an average, in Spain, of €72.65 to completely fill, or the same sized diesel tank, €66. Both types of fuel have increased in price since the start of this year, by

11.28% for petrol and 6.19% for diesel, but both are cheaper than they were this time last year, petrol having fallen in price by 1.2% and diesel by 2.28%. And in the last month, petrol has fallen in price by 1.28% and diesel by 1.07%. Fuel remains a long way off its highest price in history, which was over the first week in September 2012. A time when Spain's financial crisis

was biting the hardest with sharp tax hikes having been introduce that same week, most motorists were trying to squeeze every last kilometre out of their cars with the fuel light on as petrol soared to €1.522 per litre and diesel to €1.445. Their highest prices so far in 2019 were in May, at €1.437 per litre for petrol and €1.258 for diesel, but have fallen significantly since then.

Former King to undergo heart op Spain's former king Juan Carlos I, who retired from public life in June, has undergone heart surgery, the royal palace said. Doctors detected the need for the operation during an annual check up in June and the operation was scheduled for the end of August, a spokesman for the royal palace told Spanish news agency AFP. "It does not seem like it is a serious case," the spokesman said, adding the 81year-old had "led a normal life" since he was told he needed surgery. The royal palace did not specify what medical condition would be treated. The operation will be carried out at a private hospital at a Madrid suburb. Juan Carlos, who helped smooth Spain's transition to democracy in the 1970s after the Francisco Franco dictatorship, abdicated in favour of his son Felipe in 2014. Despite having retired from public life, he has continued to be spotted in public at bullfights in Madrid and at a sailing competition in Finland. He underwent a knee operation last year and has had multiple hip operations.

Get composting Composting not only reduces trash in landfills, but also improves your garden. Compost is organic material that can be added to soil to help plants grow. That means bigger produce, prettier flowers, shrubs, tubs, fruit and veggies s at no additional cost.

good choice if you're worried about the way your compost pile will look (or smell)! You can easily make a container, order one online or buy one at your local hardware or gardening store. Look for a bin that's about 3 feet in diameter and not much taller than your waist.

Maintaining a balance is important is because "brown" materials are rich in carbon, feeding the organisms that break down the scraps and "green" materials supply nitrogen - key for building the cell structure of your new soil.

Composting is one of the most effective ways to minimise the amount of garbage your family sends to the landfill; around 30 percent of what we throw away are food scraps and general garden waste. Not only does this reduce methane gas, which is a major factor in global warming, but composting also controls rubbish bin odour. And the biggest payoff? You'll be left with a rich fertiliser you can use in your own garden or donate to friends and neighbours.

You can add almost anything from your kitchen and gardento make your compost - some surprising organic material includes egg shells, cut flowers, coffee grounds (and paper filters), old newspapers, tea and tea bags, hair (from pets and your own hair brush!), toothpicks, and even matches.

Your compost also needs oxygen and moisture. Without air, your pile will start to rot and smell. Moisture helps break everything down; sprinkle the compost with water every now and then, unless your scraps are wet enough on their own. With the right mixture, your compost should smell like nothing but earthy dirt.

Choose an outdoor space for your compost - you need at least 3 square feet of space - and a bin. A closed bin is a

The trick is to aim for equal amounts of "green" waste and "brown" waste to keep your compost healthy. "Green" waste includes moist matter like fruits and vegetables and "brown" waste is dry matter can be items like wood shavings, dry leaves, or even old newspapers.

Is there anything I can't compost? While they are compostable, dairy or animal products (even animal bones) will start to smell and attract pests, so toss those in your old-school rubbish bin. The same goes for fats, oils, and pet waste. Also, if you have a disease or insect ridden plant, don't add it to the pile - it could contaminate your compost, making it unusable. Over a few weeks, your food scraps will turn into soil. Turn your mixture over every week or two with a shovel or garden fork to mix it up. If you're not seeing progress after a few weeks, add more "green" material and make sure you're keeping the pile moist. If it's smelly and wet, add more "brown" material and turn the compost more frequently. Also, break apart any big materials (like branches) to keep air flowing. Your compost is ready when it looks and smells like soil!

Hanoi

Old Quarter: The Old Quarter, near Hoàn Kiếm Lake, maintains most of the original street layout and some of the architecture of old Hanoi. At the beginning of the 20th century Hanoi consisted of the "36 streets", the citadel, and some of the newer French buildings south of Hoàn Kiếm lake, most of which are now part of Hoàn Kiếm district. Each street had merchants and households specializing in a particular trade, such as silk, jewelry or even bamboo. The street names still reflect these specializations, although few of them remain exclusively in their original commerce. Colonial Hanoi: Under French rule, as an administrative centre for the French colony of Indochina, the French colonial architecture style became dominant, and many examples remain today: the tree-lined boulevards and its many villas, mansions, and government buildings. Many of the colonial structures are an eclectic mixture of French and traditional Vietnamese architectural styles, such as the National Museum of Vietnamese History, the Vietnam National Museum of Fine Arts and the old Indochina Medical College. Tourism: Hanoi is sometimes dubbed the "Paris of the East" for its French influences. With its tree-fringed boulevards, more than two dozen lakes and thousands of French colonial-era buildings, Hanoi is a popular tourist destination. The tourist destinations in Hanoi are generally grouped into two main areas: the Old Quarter and the French Quarter(s). The "Old Quarter" is in the northern half of Hoàn Kiếm District with small street blocks and alleys, and a traditional Vietnamese atmosphere.

Many streets in the Old Quarter have names signifying the goods ("hàng") the local merchants were or are specialized in. Two areas are generally called the "French Quarters": the governmental area in Ba Đình District and the south of Hoàn Kiếm District. Both areas have distinctive French Colonial style villas and broad tree-lined avenues. Entertainment: A variety of options for entertainment in Hanoi can be found throughout the city. Modern and traditional theaters, cinemas, karaoke bars, dance clubs, bowling alleys, and an abundance of opportunities for shopping provide leisure activity for both locals and tourists. Hanoi has been named one of the top 10 cities for shopping in Asia by Water Puppet Tours. The number of art galleries exhibiting Vietnamese art has dramatically increased in recent years, now including galleries such as "Nhat Huy" of Huynh Thong Nhat. Cuisine: Hanoi has rich culinary traditions. Many of Vietnam's most famous dishes, such as phở, chả cá, bánh cuốn and cốm are believed to have originated in Hanoi. Perhaps most widely known is Phở—a simple rice noodle soup often eaten as breakfast at home or at street-side cafes, but also served in restaurants as a meal. Two varieties dominate the Hanoi scene: Phở Bò, containing beef and Phở Gà, containing chicken. Bún chả, a dish consisting of charcoal roasted pork served in a sweet/salty soup with rice noodle vermicelli and lettuce, is by far the most popular food item among locals.

migrant arrivals in Spain tops Hen and Irregular Spain fall by 39 percent Stag destinations

Benidorm has reportedly hit number one for stag party destinations in Europe for 2019, according to at least two sources, pinching Prague's crown although the exact order of cities recommended for men's prewedding parties varies according to who is rating them. UK-based tour operator The Stag Company says Benidorm is top, with Prague second, a listing shared by the British stag party website 'Last Night of Freedom', which had Benidorm at number nine in 2018. Other sites put Krakow in Poland, Riga in Latvia, Budapest in Hungary, and Bratislava in Slovakia near the top, and include Berlin and Amsterdam, with scoring related to price and entertainment opportunities. Most lists feature Barcelona in the top 10, although behind the more northerly destinations, which include the UK cities of

Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, Liverpool, Cardiff, Edinburgh, London, and Brighton. For hen weekends, traveller site Trivago puts Brighton, UK at the top and Marbella (Málaga province) second, calling it 'the classiest resort on the Costa del Sol', 'glamorous', and 'synonymous with daytime pool parties, beachside restaurants and great hotels', and recommending 'joining the rich and famous on the water' for a boat ride or sailing lessons. Ibiza is third on Trivago's list, describing the island as the ideal place to 'siesta by the pool during the day' before 'hitting up...the clubs by night', although also mentioning its suitability as a 'serene sun-kissed retreat' where groups of friends can 'wander the charming streets of Ibiza's old town' and tasting 'some traditional tapas dishes during the warm evenings'.

The Stag Company describes Benidorm as having a 'vibrant nightlife and warm weather' and 'as lively by day as it is by night', and describes easily-available 'classic stag-do activities' in the Costa Blanca holiday capital including go-karting with barbecue and beer, 'bubble football' and paintballing. For Spaniards, the island of Ibiza and the cities of Barcelona and Granada have become increasingly popular for hen and stag weekends. None of these needs any introduction, and all three have plenty of activities for the daytime - not least the Alhambra Palace and the famous souks in Granada, the Sagrada Família cathedral, Montjuïc mountain, the Ramblas and the Parc Güell in Barcelona - as well as excellent restaurants and bars for the evening and a lively, festive atmosphere after dark.

The latest data on irregular migrant arrivals through this route, covering the present year to last Tuesday, shows a 39 percent drop compared with the same period in 2018, for a total of 18,018 people. With financial and logistical backing from the EU and Spain, Morocco has deployed its security forces to contain the migratory pressure on Europe. The Spanish government of Pedro Sánchez has presented Morocco as a strategic partner in the fight against unauthorised immigration, and got Brussels to extend a €140 million check to that country in exchange for its assistance. Spain will add €30 million in support. The 39 percent drop means that the Spanish government is coming closer to its goal of reducing irregular immigration by half in 2019. Last year, by comparison, the western Mediterranean route became the main gateway into Europe after Italy closed off access to its ports. As a result, there were 65,000 arrivals in Spain. These days, it is Greece that is seeing the highest arrival figures in the Mediterranean: 28,200 so far this year. Morocco’s assistance has been essential to Spain’s ability to present itself to Brussels as the EU member who is doing the best

job at controlling Europe’s southern border. Pressure from the EU has been increasing, and not everyone approved of Spain’s unilateral decision last year to take in the Aquarius, a migrant ship that had been refused entry by Malta and Italy. Paris, for instance, views the southern European border as a gateway into France. A recent study by the International Organization for

Migration (IOM) showed that a little over half of the people arriving in Spain stay there; France is the second country of preference. Rabat and Madrid have reactivated bilateral agreements that had been dropped, such as the one allowing for the quick return of migrants to Moroccan territory right after they jump the fences at Ceuta and Melilla. Moroccan security forces have also intensified the number of raids, forced transfers and deportations. Moroccan

statistics, which the EU considers unreliable, show that Rabat has stopped 42,000 crossing attempts. The vast majority of would-be border crossers, 80 percent, hail from sub-Saharan Africa. Navy support For the first time, Morocco has also become involved in maritime activities. All the operations that had been carried out by Spanish teams in Morocco’s search-and-rescue zone are now being handled by the Moroccan Royal Navy, which takes the rescued migrants back to their departure point. Official Moroccan government sources told EL PAÍS that 8,000 people have been rescued at sea. The new dynamics have opened up new routes that are longer and more dangerous. “Migrants are increasingly departing from the western coast of Morocco, near the cities of Kenitra, Rabat, Skhirat and Casablanca. This leads to more accidents and more scams by the clandestine smuggling networks,” warns an internal report from Brussels that this newspaper has seen. To midAugust, 208 people have died or disappeared during the crossing to Spain, representing one out of every 100 people who attempt the journey, according to the IOM.

Harry Potter romance rumours Harry Potter co-stars Emma Watson and Tom Felton may be dating. Potterheads are freaking out at the prospect of a Hermione and Draco or "Dramione" relationship. Due to Felton's recent Instagram posts, fans are shipping the pair harder than ever. British actors Emma Watson, 29 and Tom Felton, 31, have sparked romance rumours on and off. This time around, the romance rumours were stirred when Felton posted a photograph of the two of them on his Instagram recently. The duo, popularly known as Hogwarts students Hermione Granger and Draco Malfoy, reunited for a jam session. The picture shows Felton teaching Watson how to play the guitar. The actors are seen donning pyjamas and jamming in South Africa. "Quick learner x," Felton captioned the picture. In another photograph, Felton is sitting cross-legged on the beach with two thumbs up. He wears a T-shirt that reads, "WOMEN DO IT BETTER". He credited the photo to "EW." According to reports, Watson and Felton have been close friends for a long time. They maintained their friendship even

though it has been quite a few years since the last "Harry Potter" film was released. They make appearances in each other's Instagram pages very often. Neither Watson nor Felton's reps have officially confirmed the relationship. The "Little Women" actress once confessed in an interview in 2012 that she had a crush on her co-star and friend Felton. "Between the ages of 10 and 12 I had a really terrible crush on Tom Felton. We love a bad guy, and he was a few years older and he had

a skateboard and that just did it really," Watson admitted on the "The Jonathan Ross Show". She loved the fact that Felton was cool and could do many tricks with his skateboard. Watson shared how he knew that she had a crush on him, but he would just turn and go. The "Beauty and the Beast" actress was heartbroken when Felton once said that he looked at her as his younger sister. "And it just broke my heart, still does," she said in her interview.

James Bond 25 has a name: Daniel Craig's final outing as 007 has the title ‘No Time To Die’. The title was confirmed recently, as filming continues to take place for Daniel Craig's final outing in the role of the super agent. Directed by Cary Fukunaga, the film is

written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge who was brought on board to sprinkle her magic on the script for the 25th movie. The film had previously been given the working title Shatterhand, however the new title has since been changed to match Bond's more iconic film titles. The latest Bond film sees the secret agent's tranquil life in Jamaica upturned after his friend Felix enlists his help in a mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist. Production finally kicked off in April of this year, though it had already been delayed by several months following the departure of director Danny Boyle. No Time To Die will be the final Bond movie to star Daniel, after taking on the role in Casino Royale, and then starring in Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, and Spectre

Cristiano Ronaldo reveals he is 'proud' that his 'innocence has been proven' as he discusses model's claims he raped her in Las Vegas, but says 'when people question your honour, it hurts' Ronaldo said on a TV that '2018 was the most difficult year on a personal level. When people question your honour, it hurts,' he said in reference to historic rape claims that ex-model Kathryn Mayorga went public with last year. He may well be 'proud' that his 'innocence has been proven' after cops dropped criminal probe but Ronaldo is still facing a civil lawsuit, which his lawyers are currently seeking to dismiss. The Juventus and Portugal player has repeatedly denied the allegations Lose woman Nadia Sawalha has been branded a lair by sister Juia. Julia Sawalha has lashed out at big sister Nadia - accusing her of "destroying their

family" and claiming she has told "lies". The Absolutely Fabulous star, 50, slammed her sister, 54, for using "fake tears" to "gain sympathy and attention" on a recent episode of Loose Women. During a special segment looking back on her life, Nadia said she had a "really volatile relationship" with her younger sister and they had gone through lengthy periods where they did not speak. Emotional Nadia looked close to tears as she opened up their "intense on and off relationship" to her fellow Loose Women panellists. However, Julia has accused her sister of "talking lies and rubbish" for six years while creating a sibling rivalry. In a furious rant, Julia tweeted: "So tired of #nadiasawalha talking about our ‘stormy’ relationship which she created. I've kept my privacy for 6 years to protect my family, whilst she talks lies & rubbish. "You have destroyed our family so don’t sit on TV with your fake tears to gain sympathy & attention."

Otitis and Gastrointestinal Infections, the Most Common Emergencies for Children during the Summer Long days in the pool and on the beach are the origin of otitis and gastrointestinal infections in children, two of the most common reasons for visits to Accident & Emergency during the summer, state the specialists at Quirónsalud. Otitis is an infection of the auditory canal, which transports sound from outside the body to the eardrum; its cause is the proliferation of fungi or bacteria that cause the infection. “This type of infection,” points out Doctor Laura Parra, Head of Paediatric Accident & Emergency at Quirónsalud Alicante, “tends to be very recurrent during summer vacations, especially in children that spend a lot of time in the water. If there is significant moisture in the auditory canal, the ear can become irritated and the skin on the canal can break, which allows the bacteria and fungi that cause these infections to enter and proliferate.” As for the most common symptoms presented by children with otitis, we see pain, which can be very intense and is often aggravated by pulling and even brushing the pinna, discharge and occasionally fever. In order to avoid otitis, Doctor Parra recommends “always

using ear plugs, as long as they obstruct the auditory canal completely, or also the application, in children older than three, of a drop to the point of saturation, every night, of a solution of alcohol and boric acid, which is available at chemists, if swimming will be frequent. The use of swimming caps, while they do not prevent water from getting into the ears, is convenient for hygiene if the pool is very full.” In the summer, the odds of children getting gastrointestinal infections are also higher, especially those of viral origin, such as adenovirus and rotavirus, which are most commonly contracted through faecal-oral contact, “ due to which we make sure, as much as possible, that children do not swallow water in small public pools, and make sure they wash their hands every time they go to the toilet, especially in children younger than five, whose incidence is greater,” warns Doctor Adalgisa de Caro, Paediatrician at Hospital Quirónsalud Murcia. The symptoms of this type of infection are a greater number of bowel movements and abdominal pain, of varying intensity, around the navel, associated to vomiting and fever.

The specialist at Quirónsalud Murcia insists that we must be vigilant for signs of dehydration, such as a dry tongue, reduced activity in the child, crying without tears, the presence of sunken eyes and scant urine, and go to Accident & Emergency if the child is continuously vomiting. Doctor de Caro recommends, in case of gastrointestinal infection, maintaining the child well hydrated, preferably with rehydration fluid bought at a chemist. “We should not use home-made solutions, such as lemonade with baking soda, or commercial sodas, to replace lost fluids, since they aggravate gastroenteritis and may cause severe, and even lethal complications,” advises Doctor Parra. Tips to enjoy Safe Holidays in the Water Doctor María Mínguez, Head of the Paediatric Service at Quirónsalud Torrevieja, recommends following these guidelines in order to enjoy days in the beach and in the pool with our young ones without suffering any scare: • Maintain direct supervision at all times, especially in the case of small children, even if they are wearing water wings or have

flotation devices, but also of older children, especially if they can already swim. • Protect them from the sun, and apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before exposure to the sun, and renewing the application every hour and a half to two hours. • Prevent so-called digestion interruption by getting in the water little by little, and waiting around two hours to swim after a heavy meal. • Have them wear swimming goggles to avoid conjunctivitis, whether it is caused by infection of irritation from chlorine. • Wearing sandals to walk through showers and moist areas, since with the heat, damp areas become a significant source of fungal infections. • Dry their ears well when they come out of the water, to avoid otitis.

snaps and sizzling bikini photographs as she soaked up the sun with former TOWIE star Mark. Michelle, who found fame as Tina McIntyre in Coronation Street, stars in Brassic as former wild-child Erin. The sixpart Sky One series follows the lives of Vinnie, played by Joe Gilgun, who suffers from bipolar disorder, and his smart best friend Dylan, played by Damien Molony. The two pals have been inseparable since childhood, but Michelle's character Erin threatens all that when she announces her plans to

leave town and start a new life for herself and her son, Tyler. Joe, who is known for starring opposite Vicky McClure in This is England, also co-created the project. Speaking about the upcoming series, he said: "I'm truly humbled by the opportunity. We've got an amazing team of creators and watching it all take form has been very moving. Bipolar is a big part of my life. We want to show that you can have mental health issues and in some cases live a productive, exciting life, full of adventure."

(11oz) of the lemon curd into a 23 x 30.5cm (9 x 12in) baking dish and spread to level. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, melted ice cream and remaining lemon curd until smooth. 2. Pour batter on top of the curd. Bake for 45-50min, or until it’s deep golden brown. Serve immediately with a dusting of icing sugar, if you like.

For the topping 100 g fresh breadcrumbs Finely grated zest 1 lemon 3 tbsp. finely chopped parsley 2 garlic cloves, crushed 2 x 400g tins cannellini beans, drained and rinsed Directions 1. Preheat oven to 200°C (180°C fan) mark 6. Heat 2tbsp oil in a medium pan and fry chorizo over medium heat until golden. Remove with a slotted spoon to a plate. Add flour to pan and stir until combined with the oil. Gradually stir in sherry and stock, to make a smooth paste. Simmer for 2min until very thick; season and set aside.

2. For the topping, heat 2tbsp of the oil in a medium frying pan, add breadcrumbs and cook until lightly toasted. Stir in lemon zest and parsley and remove to a separate plate. Wipe out pan with kitchen paper and add final 3tbsp oil. Add garlic and drained beans and fry gently for 2-3min until warmed through. Mash roughly and season. 3. Arrange cod chunks, chorizo and spring onions in the base of a 1.7 litre (3 pint) pie dish and dollop over the thick sauce (the fish will release a lot of liquid to thin the sauce). Cover with bean mash and sprinkle over breadcrumbs. 4. Cook in oven for 30min until piping hot and breadcrumbs are deep golden. Serve.

Adult binge drinking is on the rise Binge drinking seems like only something college students do, but it turns out, many older adults drink alcohol in excess, too. New research published this week in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society found 1 in 10 adults over the age of 65 engages in binge drinking, putting them at greater risk for falls and other medical problems. Researchers from New York University analysed data on 10,927 people over age 65 who participated in the National Survey on Drug Use and Health between 2015 and 2017. About 10.6 percent of participants reported binge drinking, which the

study defined as having five or more drinks at once for men and four or more for women, within the past 30 days. (That's also the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism's definition of binge drinking for people of all ages.) The same group of researchers published a similar study in 2017, looking at binge drinking among older adults from 2005 to 2014. Though the two studies asked slightly different questions about alcohol use, less than 9 percent of people over the

age 65 said they'd engaged in binge drinking during the past month in the previous study, which led researchers to believe rates of excessive drinking in older adults may be slowly rising. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) recommends that people over age 65 who have no chronic diseases limit themselves to three drinks per day. However, 80 percent of older adults have at least one chronic condition, such as heart disease, cancer, or diabetes, according to the National Council on Aging (NCA). The NIAAA says those who have a health problem or take certain medications may need to drink less or not at all. That's because, according to the NCA, alcohol can worsen some chronic diseases (such as hypertension and diabetes), have a dangerous interaction with certain medications, or make people forget to take their medication all together. "Binge drinking, even episodically or infrequently, may negatively affect other health conditions by exacerbating disease, interacting with prescribed medications, and complicating disease management," the study's lead author Benjamin Han, MD, assistant professor at NYU Langone Health, said in a press release. To make matters more complicated, the research also found cannabis use was higher among binge drinkers, a combination that may increase older adults' risk for falls. According to the NCA, falls are the leading cause of broken bones, trauma, and deaths among older adults. Dr. Han said in the release, "Our results underscore the importance of educating, screening, and intervening to prevent alcohol-related harms in older adults, who may not be aware of their heightened risk for injuries and how alcohol can exacerbate chronic diseases."

Spain’s beer producers warn industry under threat from Brexit The profile of Spanish beer is growing internationally but a new set of factors is threatening to undermine its success. Although beer consumption has bounced back last year after losing ground during the economic crisis – 20 percent between 2007 and 2012 – the economic slowdown coupled with external factors such as the possibility of a no-deal Brexit have started to ring alarm bells. “It’s a little early to say, but we have felt the effects of the economic slowdown and then there is concrete data, such as the drop in British tourism,” said Jacobo Olalla, managing director of Spain’s beer producer association Cerveceros de España, during the presentation of a report on Spanish vacation habits, produced by the association. According to Olalla, Brexit is going to have a huge impact on the Spanish beer market, both in terms of tourism and exports. The United Kingdom is the third biggest export market for Spanish beer – 467,132 hectoliters in 2018 from a total of 2.97 million – and the main source of foreign tourists in Spain. “It’s a country with a big beer culture which doubles or triples our consumption and also helps us to export,” Olalla adds. Summer accounts for the biggest consumption of beer in Spain. As much as 31 percent is drunk between June and September – the equivalent of 11 millions of hectolitres, according to Cerveceros de España. But although the British continue to choose Spain for their summer vacation, the comeback of destinations,

such as Turkey, as well as the growing global climate of uncertainty, are reducing their numbers; in June, 2.1 million UK tourists came to Spain, 5.3 percent down on the previous year. “Brexit could have consequences for the pound [which hit its lowest exchange rate since 2017 at the end of July] and for tourism – not just holiday tourism,” said Olalla, referring to the number of Brits who own a second home in Spain. “A hard

Brexit, which will probably limit freedom of movement, could send them home. Brexit is not good news for anyone.”

Summer, beer and paella Spain is the fourth-biggest beer producer in the European Union. Last year, the sector sold more than 40 million hectoliters, more than half in bars and restaurants. According to the last report from the Ministry of Agriculture on food and drink consumption in Spain, beer is the most popular cold drink outside the home. In 2018, it accounted for 35.2 percent of cold drinks consumed, compared with 32.7percent of water and

19.5 percent of soft drinks. Meanwhile, consumption within the home dropped in volume but rose 2 percent in value. According to the report The Spaniards’ Ideal Summer, produced by the Madison Market Research company, 70 percent of the 2,021 Spaniards surveyed described their ideal summer as a combination of beer and paella in a town or at the beach, accompanied by their partner in 43.7 percent of cases, friends in 15.6 percent and family in 36.2 percent. “Tourism, climate and lifestyle have made Spain the third-biggest consumer of beer,” said Olalla. “It’s not about consuming alcohol; it’s about having a refreshing drink.” This would explain why Spain is one of the biggest consumers and producers of non-alcoholic beer. “The total consumption of this product is 15 percent of all that is drunk while in France it is just 4 percent,” said Olalla. Eighty percent of Spaniards associate drinking beer with an aperitif or a meal, according to the report. Rice dishes, paella and Spanish omelette are all foods that those surveyed regularly have with beer when at the beach. The survey also covered favoured vacation spots and found that the most popular resort is Benidorm, followed by Playa Norte in Gandia and Barceloneta. What those surveyed appreciated most about these beaches was the environment (57.6 percent) and cleanliness (46.3 percent). Among the more rural destinations, Conil de la Frontera, Llanes and Formentera were all frontrunners.

Real risks of cutting carbs Low carb diets have been popular for years. But lately zero carb diets have been gaining media space and the experts are worried. Depending on what you choose to eat, a no carb diet may be even more restrictive than a keto diet. While there’s no precise limit to the grams allowed per day, this approach essentially involves eliminating as much carbohydrate as

diet is linked to a significantly lower risk of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and some digestive diseases. Certain types of fibre also act as prebiotics, which serve as food for the beneficial gut bacteria that support immunity, anti-inflammation, and mental health.

Carb flu You’ve probably heard about the keto flu. It happens when someone first adopts a keto diet, with symptoms that may include headaches, brain fog, irritability, dizziness, nausea, and muscle soreness. This occurs as your brain, which typically uses up to 60 percent of all the carbs you eat, must adapt to a different fuel source.

Social and psychological side effects Any extreme diet makes social eating a challenge. Strict diets can lead to avoiding get togethers with friends and

possible. Considering that vegetables typically contain 3 to 4 grams of net carb (that's grams of total carb minus grams of fibre) per cup, and an ounce of nuts provides about the same, a truly zero carb goal eliminates more healthprotective foods than any other diet. The focus with carbohydrates should be quality and balance, not banishment. It’s absolutely true that there are some bad carbs, such as processed grains and refined sugar; but that’s just part of the carb story. The side effects of attempting to eliminate all carbs are very impactful for both quality of life and health....

You could miss important nutrients Slashing carbs severely reduces the intake of many key nutrients found in foods that are shunned or limited, including vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, fibre, and prebiotics and healthful fats. There is no multivitamin or powdered supplement capable of replacing the myriad health-protective nutrients that stop showing up for work in the body. This shortfall can potentially affect immune function, cognitive health, and up the risk of chronic illnesses, including heart disease and Alzheimer’s. In fact in Blue Zones—areas in the world where people live the longest, healthiest lives—diets are predominantly plantbased and relatively high in carbs.

Experience poor digestive health The daily recommended target for fibre is at least 25 grams per day. And this important nutrient is only found in foods that contain carbohydrates. A high fibre

family or can cause people to become obsessive or fearful about food. Others who are unable to maintain the restrictions, and thus fall off the wagon, often experience extreme guilt and even depression. Going on and off strict diets is a pattern that can morph into seriously disordered eating and crush people’s quality of life and mental health. Bottom line: a zero carb diet is not necessary or recommended for either long-term weight loss or optimal health. In fact, recent research shows that a plant-based diet that includes whole, fibre-rich foods; mono-unsaturated fats, like avocado, olive oil and nuts; and plantbased proteins, like lentils and beans, plays a major role in the prevention and management of type 2 diabetes. Plantbased diets, which are moderate to high in carbohydrates, have been shown to generate weight loss, improve insulin resistance, support a healthy gut microbiome, and reduce the formation of advanced glycation end products, or AGEs, compounds associated with aging.

Unhackable internet Scientists in Barcelona are working on next generation photon technology, the quantum internet. At the ICFO Institute of Photonic Sciences, the team is developing an altogether new kind of web, where messages are sent via a few photons, and any attempt to intercept communication will always be detected. The hardware to create the quantum internet is not yet robust, certified and compact enough to allow the

technology to be deployed, and there are challenges in sending messages over very long distances.

However, the science of quantum key distribution, in

which a quantum random number generated key is exchanged in order to unlock data shared in a traditional way, promises a great deal in terms of building a super-secure internet. "Your data will be protected, for example, your financial, your health data. Also from a defence and security point of view, there will be a significant benefit, not to mention to secure power grids or transport grids," explains Valerio Pruneri, CiViQ Project Coordinator at ICFO/ICREA.

Scientists developing tech for visually impaired Translate images into sounds and you have a valuable navigation tool for blind people: increasing their mobility, safety and autonomy. The white cane is still one of the most common tools that blind people use to stay mobile. But think instead how valuable an electronic device would be if it could communicate on the surrounding environment to its user. Scientists at the University of Bucharest are working on just

that."The system includes a 3D camera that continuously scans the environment, very fast, 20 times a second,” says Alin Moldoveanu, Technical Coordinator of the Sound of Vision Project and Professor at the Politehnica University of Bucharest. “Then we process that information with computer vision algorithms and we break down every individual object. Each individual object is presented to the user through 3D computer-

generated sounds and he hears the object through vibrations on a belt on his abdomen."

Google Maps enormous navigation arrow Trying to follow Google Maps navigation and walking at the same time isn't always the easiest thing to do, especially if you're on a busy street or a shaky connection means that the navigation lags ever so slightly. Even just following the small blue dots guiding you can be a challenge -they're just not easy to see and don't always pinpoint exactly where you are. Sometimes by the time the arrows catch up to your location you’ve take a wrong turning and are now heading the wrong way. But a new feature in the Google Maps app for iPhone and Android will now make it 100 percent crystal clear where you're supposed to turn. How? By superimposing a massive arrow on the screen of your phone to tell you so. It's called Live View and it's here to help you get to your destination quickly and efficiently. The Live View feature presents the area around you as viewed through your phone's camera, using AR to place huge arrows that tell you exactly when to turn left or right. If you get lost, you

can swivel your phone or body until you see the arrows pointing you in the right direction. As of right now, Live View is only available for walking navigation, but experts say they wouldn't be surprised if Google eventually opened it up to driving directions, too. This week, Google will slowly roll out this new function to Android phones and iPhones, so users are advised to keep checking back. Google updates Maps with AR, Facebook tests new video service 1. Open the Google Maps app on your phone. (This isn't available on desktop navigation, of course.) 2. In the search bar, type the address or business name you're going to and select the location. 3. Tap Directions. 4. Select the Walking icon. 5. Tap the blue Live View button (it's right next to the Start button). Now when you start walking toward your destination, large arrows and the street name will appear on your screen to guide you.

The best time to work out is in the morning - here's why Hotly debated fitness topics are in no short supply: yoga vs. pilates, cardio vs. strength training, treadmill vs. outdoor running - the list goes on. But no dispute is as polarising as the one surrounding morning vs. evening workouts. Of course, the absolute best time to work out is whenever gym time meshes with your schedule so you actually show up regularly. If you can only squeeze in a jog or yoga flow after work, it's smarter to do that then skip it altogether, exercise physiologists and trainers say. That said, there is an optimal time to work out when you'll reap the most benefits - and that's in the morning. Research shows that starting the day with a heart-pumping sweat session does come with indisputable health benefits; and honestly, it's not as hard as you think - -once you get the hang of it. Still not convinced? Let these five science-backed reasons to start setting your alarm a little bit earlier do the trick.

1.

You’ll make better wellness choices all day When you start the day working on your health, you'll strive to maintain that healthiness. Think about it: When you're proud of yourself for consistently killing it at your 8am class, you won't want to ruin that healthy high by always gorging on breakfast donuts, right? Instead, you'll

likely try to keep that awesome feeling going by skipping the pastries, taking the stairs to get to your office, and indulging in a grain bowl at lunch rather than the big brunch special. All of these little moves add up to a healthier you.

2.

You’ll sleep like an actual baby in a good way. According to the National Sleep Foundation (NSF), people who hit the treadmill at 7am sleep longer, experience deeper sleep cycles, and spend 75 percent more time in the most reparative stages of slumber than those who exercise at later times in the day. The NSF also notes that those who sweat at night tend to have more trouble catching shuteye, possibly because working out raises your body temperature - and an overheated body is a known sleep saboteur.

3.

You might lower your blood pressure People with high blood pressure, aka hypertension, often need medications to control this dangerous condition. But lifestyle changes like exercising in the morning - may help.

In one 2014 study published in the Journal of Vascular Health and Risk Management, researchers had participants exercise at three different times of day: 7am, 11am, and 7pm. Those who worked out early in the morning at 7am reduced their post-workout blood pressure by 10 percent. That dip continued all day and lowered even more at night, compared to the other participants, the researchers concluded. (The study subjects who worked out at 7am also slept better and had longer sleep cycles compared to their laterworkout counterparts.)

4.

You'll get a mood boost to help tackle the workday Working out gives you that boost of endorphins, which are basically natural painkillers for the body . If your brain gets that endorphin bath early in the morning, you'll start your day feeling more optimistic and less susceptible to stress and anxiety, setting you up for a positive, productive workday. You’ll also

get a feeling of accomplishment knowing that you’ve made time for yourself first thing and have made your mental health a priority.

5.

You might lose more weight, if that's what you're aiming for. Yep, if you're working out to lose weight, your results might depend (at least a little bit) on timing. According to a 2019 study in the International Journal of Obesity, those who exercised earlier in the day (at least before noon) lost "significantly more weight" than those who exercised later in the day, past 3pm. While researchers admit that the study was small and needs more data to back up these claims, they also found a few other differences in morning versus late exercisers: According to researchers, early exercisers were slightly more active throughout the day, and ultimately ended up taking more steps than late exercisers. Those who exercised early on also ate about 100 calories less - though researchers said these differences are barely applicable.

6.

You’ll have the rest of the afternoon and evening free In a perfect world, you would look forward to your regular date with the elliptical machine with pure, unbridled enthusiasm. But sometimes going to the gym is the last thing you want to do; it feels like a chore or a time suck, or the weather is terrible and you just want to go home and watch a Housewives marathon. Make it there early in the day, however, and you get your sweat session out of the way, so you won't nag yourself about it later. Especially if you have a busy schedule, working out in the morning can be the best way to plan and ensure that your workout doesn’t get pushed to the side at the end of a long day. If you’ve worked out in the morning, you don’t have to choose between exercise and happy hour or exercise and dinner with friends, so it’s easier to make it a habit.

Boost your energy with food When your feeling run down and exhausted, it’s an easy option to turn to sugar and/or caffeine to bolster flagging energy reserves. But this is a bad idea! Fatigue breaks us down physically and emotionally and wreaks havoc on the immune system, making us more susceptible to illness, depression, and even chronic conditions like heart disease. Moreover, proper nutrition and the timing of what you eat can do wonders to make you feel alert and powerful. Here, are some top tips for eating for energy. Eat more iron from plants Certain nutrients, especially iron, may help women feel more energised. Nearly 10 percent of women between the ages of 20 and 49 are iron-deficient, which can cause fatigue and impair physical and mental endurance. Iron is needed to deliver oxygen to cells, and too little has also been shown to decrease immunity. A recent study found that over 10 years, women who consumed the most plant-based iron were 35 percent less likely to develop PMS than women who consumed the least. Great plant sources of iron include beans, lentils, spinach, and sesame seeds; eating them with vitamin C-rich

foods can boost iron absorption. Eat the right food combos Experts say the right formula for maximum energy is: fruit or veggie + a whole grain + lean protein + plant-based fat + herb/spice. Balance is key; your body loves to be in balance. Giving it less of something it needs throws things off, as does giving it more than it needs. Eat an energizing breakfast Don't limit your morning meal to protein or carbs; breakfast needs to be balanced too. Instead of having just yogurt, add some high antioxidant fruit, a good fat like nuts or seeds, and raw or toasted oats. And go for organic non-fat yogurts to maximise protein and quality. Eat more real food Real food means food that's closer to nature: whole grains rather than processed chips or crackers from a box, whole fruit rather than juice or fruit bars. The energy dividends will pay off! When I've had clients swap more processed

foods for ‘real' whole foods, their energy has gone through the roof, and many lose weight, even if the swaps result in eating more calories. Eat more superfruits You should aim to eat a wide variety of superfuits - apples, stone fruits, berries, tomatoes. Limiting yourself to the same old banana for breakfast curbs your nutrient and antioxidant intake and can make you feel run down. Research shows that people who eat the same amount of produce but a wider variety have less oxidative stress, which is a precursor to aging and disease. Choose the right energy bars When choosing an energy bar, ignore what's on the front of the package and check the ingredients list. If the ingredients read like a recipe, and I feel like I could buy the ingredients and make it myself, that's great. If it reads like a science experiment, with ingredients that aren't real whole foods, then pass, regardless of the protein/carb/fat ratio or vitamin/mineral content.

Millie Bobby Brown to launch beauty brand It’s been a week full of celebrity beauty brand announcements. Following in the footsteps of Kylie Jenner and Rihanna, Selena Gomez and Ciara have both claimed to be starting their own beauty brands, and there is now another one to add to the mix. She’s the star of one of the most popular series to ever hit Netflix, but, despite being just 15 years old, Millie Bobby Brown is already branching out of Stranger Things territory. Yes, Eleven is launching her own beauty brand. The new line is called Florence by Mills, inspired by her great grandmother. Importantly, the brand will be PETAcertified, vegan and cruelty-free. Whilst the full product list hasn’t been publicised, Brown is staying clear of Instagram's favourite full-coverage matte foundations and instead opting for subtle bases so Gen Z can show of that nice young skin of theirs. Brown’s favourite products from the range so far are her Light Skin Tint and Eye Gel pads. She said: “I’ve been in a make-up chair since I was 11 years old, and have been introduced to all types of products. ...I wanted to come into the space because there was a gap in the market for young people.” Pricing will range from between 10 euros-ish and 30€ and will be sold at Boots in the UK and on-line.

Live longer with these healthy habits

Making five healthy lifestyle choices could prolong your life by longer than 10 years, according to a new study. The habits are recognisable - eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, drinking only in moderation, not smoking and maintaining a healthy body weight - but the study sought to quantify the exact extent to which they could impact a person’s health and longevity. The findings, published in the journal Circulation, suggest that adhering to these five behaviors could extend a woman’s life expectancy at age 50 by 14 years, and a man’s by 12. The researchers analyzed data from two large studies of U.S. health professionals, using a sample of almost 79,000 women and more than 44,300 men. The people filled out detailed questionnaires about their health and lifestyle habits every two to four years,

with researchers monitoring their adherence to the five behaviours highlighted by the study. People were considered to have a healthy diet if they fell into the top 40 percent of the study group, based on their Healthy Eating Index score; to drink moderately if they had a drink or fewer per day for women, or two drinks a day or fewer for men; to have a healthy body weight if their body mass index fell between 18.5 and 24.9; to exercise regularly if they were active for at least 30 minutes a day; and to not smoke if they had never picked up the habit. The researchers tracked the group for up to 34 years. During that time, more than 42,000 people died. Almost 14,000 of these deaths were due to cancer, according to the study, and almost 10,700 were due to cardiovascular disease.

Those who followed all five of the healthy habits, however, were 74 percent less likely to die during the follow-up period than those who followed none of them. Beyond that general risk reduction, they were 82 percent less likely to die from cardiovascular disease and 65% less likely to die from cancer. Those decreases in risk correlate to more than 10 years of extra life, according to the paper - a huge leap, especially in the U.S., where life expectancy lags significantly behind that of many other wealthy nations and is even declining modestly. The results underscore the importance of making small but impactful changes to your health and daily routines - and of following the wellness advice you’ve been hearing for years.

Safety for Cyclists One fact which is sometimes forgotten is that the road network is, generally, a coexistent space. In other words, generally speaking, the road is not an exclusive domain of cars, or vans, but an area where a multitude of different vehicle formats have equal “rights” to use the space, as well as obligations of course. When it comes to road safety, we must realise that as the driver of a car, for example, we have no more right to be on the road than any other vehicle, and we must especially be aware that in the case of many other road users, there is a scale of vulnerability which we must be aware of, and adapt to. As we put that into perspective, we must realise that last year, 94 cyclists lost their lives on the road network, and the majority of those fatalities were during collisions with other vehicles. We have already seen how new technology is helping to police the roads, with drones being the latest tool added to the road safety arsenal. These drones monitor the road from the air and the images captured are usable as

evidence to prosecute drivers of vehicles who don´t give sufficient space to cyclists when overtaking, for example. On the other side is the element of mutual respect and the drones can also be used to prosecute cyclists who don´t abide by the rules of the road as well. Cyclists do fall into a category of vulnerable road users, which is why giving them greater distance is crucial. Their vulnerability is because in the event of a collision with another vehicle, the rider is likely to come worse off. Therefore, the law establishes certain minimum requirements, such as, for example, it being mandatory to maintain a minimum lateral distance of 1.5 metres when overtaking. If you cannot guarantee that space, then you must not overtake. This is also an exception whereas you are allowed to cross a solid white line in the centre of the road, but only if there are no other vehicles coming towards you, which includes cyclists coming in the opposite direction, even if they are on the hard shoulder.

However, although the rule establishes a minimum lateral distance, there is some confusion as to how much space this actually is, especially as it can only be estimated by drivers at the time of overtaking. Also, it would appear that the rule is respected differently depending on the region, which in turn is dependent on the type of roads running through it. A study by the companies Gonvarri and Movistar revealed some interesting statistics about what drivers think, and what they do about the 1.5 metre standard. According to the data, in Catalonia 89% of the drivers respect the cycling safety distance. Meanwhile, in other regions such as Murcia, that figure drops to 77%. In a different study carried out by the MAPFRE Foundation and Bosch, focussing specifically on the perception of drivers, some 73% of the drivers questioned said that they don´t effectively monitor the distance before overtaking a cyclist, and carry out the move "unconsciously and automatically."

Getting a Replacement MOT Certificate It is common and perfectly legal to see foreign registered vehicles on the roads of another country. This allows holiday makers the freedom to travel with their vehicles across the globe. However, it is a different story if you intend to bring the vehicle to a new country long term, in which case you must register it in your new country of residence. You need do this as soon as possible, and it is a legal requirement if your vehicle will spend more than 6 months in a year in a foreign country. This article however focuses on a new service for holiday vehicles driven over and you lose the MOT certificate. The Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has launched

a new online service which allows you to obtain a replacement MOT certificate if you’ve lost or damaged the original and it is totally free. Visit: www.checkmot.service.gov.uk/ and enter the vehicle registration and the 11-digit number from the vehicle log book (V5C). The service is only available for private cars and avoids the need to visit an MOT centre to obtain a replacement, although this can still be done if you are in the UK, for a small fee of up to £10. And talking of MOTs; many people believe you can take a foreign registered vehicle to a Spanish ITV station and test it here. This is partly

true. You can submit a vehicle registered in any country for testing here in Spain. However, this is a “voluntary test” and is subsequently not legally binding or recognised. The service allows concerned vehicle owners to have their car checked by experts but is without being of legal consequence. The legally recognised test and certification can only be conducted in the country where the vehicle is registered. All vehicles, wherever their registered origin, must be taxed, tested and insured to be on the roads of any country.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Sometimes, a Premier League weekend passes us by without a great deal to point-the-finger of fun at. It’s drier than a Bank Holiday weekend in the UK (well, this last one anyway). There was a time where Man United losing at home to Crystal Palace would have been really, really funny. Now it’s barely a shock. There was a time where Arsenal being commended for not utterly folding at Anfield would have been an insult. Now, it’s just damning praise. And there used to be a world where Chelsea conceding twice at a club like Norwich would have had question marks over whichever one of Roman’s latest foreign fancies were coaching the side.

We live in a dry, unfunny, almost predictable Premier League era folks. We’ll start at Anfield where the fact that Virgil van Dijk allegedly got dribbled past was the ‘big news’. Now, I’ve watched this back several times and being turned on the halfway line, sprinting back into position and waiting long enough for Nicolas Pepe to make another poor decision doesn’t really strike me as being ‘dribbled past’. But hey, Twitter means we are all obsessed by meaningless stats now. Arsenal came with a gameplan the problem was, they’re nowhere near as good as Liverpool and that meant their “sit back and defend then hope Nicolas Pepe can dribble past van Dijk” idea didn’t have that many legs. The other key flaw on building a gameplan around your defence is when (a) you are Arsenal and (b) you’ve selected David Luiz.

Luiz was at his peak at Anfield, conceding one penalty for pulling Mo Salah shirt in a way that suggests he is unaware VAR even exists. For Salah’s second, Luiz was clearly sprinting to catch a bus in the opposite direction to where Salah was going. There was talk of a brighter future at Arsenal this season - I think we can draw a line under that concept now, can’t we? At Old Trafford, United headed into the match with Palace with an unchanged team meaning, most likely, unchanged attitudes - yes Paul Pogba, I am referring to you. We can argue all day long that Pogba forced a good save from the spot-kick at Molineux after that drama. We could even agree on the fact that United were a little hard done by with regard to VAR and it’s incompetence on Saturday. But hear me out - Pogba mucking

about over Monday’s spot-kick added more pressure than was needed to Marcus Rashford’s penalty against Palace. And Rashford, a boy with a 100% record and capable of doing it in Paris when the pressure was really on, missed. Combine that with Pogba then needlessly giving the ball away in true Pogbaesque style after United had squared the match and well, Ole isn’t going to be baby-faced much longer at this rate.

ended up the winners thanks to a fine goal by teacher’s pet, Mason Mount. The last time Man City went to Bournemouth the hosts tried to win the game without completing a pass or getting a shot on goal. At least this time round, they managed to hit the back of the net with a Harry Wilson stunner the only kind of goal he scores. Unfortunately for Eddie Howe’s men, VAR doesn’t apply for goalkeepers and City scored three. Tottenham can forget challenging for the title after they were flat, again, at their new stadium. Being honest, Spurs were poor against both Villa and City

suffered the double indignity of losing again and being responsible for West Ham actually winning in August. Mark Noble scored with his first touch of the season before big Seb Haller netted a brace - the second a fine overhead kick that was completely wasted by the fact he was one-yard out when he did it. Brighton’s top start to the season ended the moment Florin Andone planted all 18 studs into his opponent. Down to ten men, Brighton still played well but ended up giving Southampton the 2-0 boost they needed.

A lot of the pre-match talk was about how young Aaron Wan-Bissaka was going to put Wilfried Zaha in his pocket - well, Zaha had the perfect answer to that. Why play left-wing when if you pop over to the right you can be up against Luke Shaw and then Ashley Young? And they say Wilf isn’t an intelligent footballer. Over at Carrow Road, Tammy Abraham finally proved what many of us have known for years - he is absolutely deadly against Championship centre-backs. Abraham scored twice, but so did Norwich City who, to be fair, rattled Chelsea more than they should have. Teemu Pukki continued his “best start to a Premier League season by a balding player who wouldn’t look out of place on the Sunday park” by scoring again but it was Frank Lampard’s Chelsea who

and were lucky to be going into the game with Newcastle with four points. They finished the game with Newcastle still on four points, mainly because the Geordies have a new homegrown number nine called Joe Linton. The big striker scored his first goal for the club and it proved to be a Newcastle winner in London - which is almost a rare as a decent Newcastle number nine nowadays.

Jamie Vardy hadn’t scored in the 2019/20 season but, as a Sheffield Wednesday fan, he was nailed on to get one against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane. It’s going to be a long season for Chris Wilder’s men.

We should all take a moment to respect the fact that had Rafa come to Spurs and left with a 1-0 victory it would have been ‘a tactical masterclass’. Maybe Steve Bruce is cleverer than he looks, managerially?

Friday night saw Everton prove once again that having some decent money to spend isn’t as useful as spending it wisely. Aston Villa, who spent £120m or so on sprucing up their squad for the Premier League, played them off the pitch and it was their record signing Wesley who stood out. Wesley got the opening goal, and Theo Walcott missed from a yard. All is right in the world.

As a result, Watford’s Javi Gracia is in pole position to be the first Premier League manager fired as Watford

Burnley were delighted to be on the other side of a Europa League hangover, drawing with Wolves 1-1 after Nuno’s historic night in Turin.

Your week in sport

I did try and pass this week’s column off as “BEN STOKES, THAT IS ALL”. Sadly, I am expected to write a little more for my money. Test cricket’s alright, no? Wow. Simply wow. England won the ‘greatest game of cricket EVER’ for the second time in just over a month. Not only was it very decent of England and Australia to finish the 3rd Test on Sunday allowing us to review it properly, but it was also the greatest English Test match finish ever witnessed. Ever.

CostaBlancaPeople 27th August - 2nd September 2019

Don’t 2005 at Edgbaston me. This was utterly incredible. Don’t forget, England got bowled out for 67 in the first innings. 67. Steve Smith, had he been playing, would have been fuming to get 67 on his own - let alone the entire team. England went into Sunday needing another 200 odd to win the match against all odds with eight wickets remaining. Joe Root batted for his job and was supported by Joe Denly, batting for his Test career. The stage was slowly being set, even when Root and Denly got

themselves out. At that point, the Ashes was gone. Totally gone. Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow flirted with it making a canter once again, and then the wickets tumbled. England were being predictable - killing us with the damn hope yet again. But, we’d all forgotten about Jack Leach, hadn’t we? England were 286/9 and needing 77 to win when Jack Leach came out at number 11.

Jack Leach ended up with one not out - easily the finest one not out he will ever get in his career. At the other end Ben Stokes, biffed, calculated, created, smashed, worked, ran and backed his partner to face one ball an over. Yes, yes - Australia screwed themselves over with a daft review only to see Stokes given not out when plumb moments later. Yes, yes - Nathan Lyon’s fumble failed a clear run out (which would have made it two too many after Jos Buttler’s failure earlier).

Even at that point, you couldn’t say England were home and dry. When the scores were level, Leach getting his single, and Stokes was on strike you were allowed to believe. Funnily enough, Stokes got Man of the Match. He scored two off his first 42 balls. And then 74 off his last 42. Oh, and he can bowl a bit. What is it with Headlingly and famous Test comebacks? (Come on, twice in nearly 40 years counts). Now, can we go on and win the Ashes?

Las Ramblas Golf Society McIlroy wins golf's biggest ever prize Results for w/c 19.8.19 With strict adherence to our rules regarding scorecards and weather conditions, Bryan Neal found himself disqualified not just once but twice this week! Having seemingly won Monday’s ‘2 ball Texas Scramble’ alongside Reg Akehurst with a net score of 66.25, it was later discovered that they hadn’t dated their card or entered the name of the game! This resulted in Geoff Biggerstaff and Terry Field being elevated into 1st place with a net 67. This was despite Geoff taking a tumble on the 8th tee and causing himself Graham Murray some small injuries. I thought it was a little unkind when one of his With it being just 5 clubs and a putter playing group remarked, ‘Where are we Mike Mahony was sweating somewhat as going to get a crane this time on a he normally loses at least 2 clubs out on the course! Monday morning to pick him up?’ With just 12 players braving the weather, things then went from bad to worse for our ‘Commander in Chief’ in Wednesday’s ‘5 clubs and a putter’ Stableford. His three playing partners decided enough was enough with the heavy rain (at times) and retired early thus leaving Bryan with no-one to mark his card, which consequently led to his second disqualification of the week. Sounds harsh but I’m sure Bryan would agree ‘rules are rules.’Wednesday’s winner was Graham Murray with 38 points. He was followed home by Mike Chapman with 34 and a very surprised Richard Connock took 3rd, with 32. There were no ‘2’s today so a ‘Rollover’ for next week!

Beating the runners up by just one point and with a total of 87 our winners of Friday’s ‘Change Partners’ were Alan Douglas, Graham Murray, Jamie Conway and the fictional Albert. Myself, Rachel and Nick Lee together with Reg Akehurst were unfortunately the ‘bridesmaids’ today. On our ninth hole Allen McClusky says to caddy, ‘ Oooh nooo!I’m going to drown myself in the lake.’ Caddy replies, ‘Think you can keep your head down that long sir?’ Pues hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell

Nobody can ever deny that it should take a magnificent display to collect $15m and so Rory McIlroy produced one on Sunday night by winning the Tour Championship and so with it the biggest first prize ever in golf. And whatever is said about McIlroy’s fifth majorless season in succession, there can be no doubt that 2019 will be a campaign that lives long in his, and his bank manager’s, memory. The 30-year-old was not simply content with winning in Atlanta on the new controversial handicapped system - or with outduelling playing partner Brooks Koepka in the final round. That tussle with the world No 1 meant a lot to McIlroy, after being beaten so throughly by Koepka in the WGC St Jude Classic three weeks ago. “Brooks got one over one on me at Memphis and I wanted to get a bit of revenge today,” he said. But there was more. Much, much more. The Northern Irishman made it his mission to lift the East Lake title by taking the fewest strokes of the 30-man field, not merely by prevailing on the unprecedented format the PGA Tour brought in for their season finale. And with a 10-foofter for a birdie on the l18th, McIlroy believed that he had ensured that nobody could deny who was the player of the week at East Lake by shooting a 66 for an 18-under total. “My goal was to shoot the lowest score of the week and that is why that putt on the last meant so much to me,” he said. “It was such a cool way to end. I’ve given myself so many chances this year and to win three times is awesome.

I’m very proud of myself and will enjoy myself tonight.” Much will be said about the radical overhaul of the climax to the PGA Tour, with the FedEx Cup standings dictating who began on what score in the first round of this event. Justin Thomas, was on 10-under, with Koepka on sevenunder and McIlroy two further back. In the end, Xander Schaffelle came nearest

in the handicap and in shots, but was four and three behind respectively behind the new world No 2. McIlroy joined Tiger Woods as the only other player to win multiple FedEx Cups and reiterated his belief that the success was not about the money. “All that matters to me is this silverware,” he said. On the Ladies European Tour, an emotional Carly Booth won her first title in seven years at the Czech Women’s Open. The Scot shot a 70 to finish on nine-under to finish a shot clear of a group including England’s Charlotte Thompson and Hayley Davis. At the Scandinavian Invitation on the European Tour, South African Erik Van Rooyen carded a closing 64 in Gothenburg to finish 19-under to deny England's Matt Fitzpatrick, who also shot a 64, by a shot.
