Town hall on the attack Torrevieja town hall is on the attack - to tackle the mosquito problem that has been plaguing residents over the last

number of weeks. The council has intensified the works to control the mosquitoes in an attempt to offer some relief from the huge swarms of pests encountered in the area recently. The Councillor for Health and Pest Control, Concha Sala, expects the situation to improve gradually as intensive anti mosquito treatments are carried out across the area. The issue has become somewhat of a political football with disparaging remarks being cast from both those in opposition and in government. The green party, Los Verdes, have criticized the current administration for the mosquito problem but the PP, currently in power, lays the blame squarely at the door of the former Mayor, José Manuel Dolón claiming that not enough preventative measures were taken to avoid the current problem.

Councillor Concha Sala revealed that due to abundant rain in recent weeks, the mosquito population has increased and in response, the town hall has doubled work teams on pest control duty. In many of the areas affected – particularly around the salt lake – pest control work has been ongoing for two weeks, seven days per week, said Councillor Sala. The work teams have been spraying larvicide treatment in the town’s flood plains to kill mosquitoes before they have a chance to develop and in problem areas such as a the ‘via verde’ walkway and urbanisations such as Torretas, Baños de Europa and Torreta Florida, teams have been administering a product which will also kill adult mosquitoes. The Park of Nations, El Chaparral and San Roque have also been

sprayed as well as the Acequión canal and parts of Los Balcones. Councillor Sala was keen to remind citizens that they can advise the town hall of problems with pests through PROP office or by telephoning 607 246 907 (from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.), or by sending an email to: ddd.torrevieja@gmail.com, indicating your name, phone number, address and type of pest.

Father charged for leaving 4 year old alone A father has been charged with abandonment after he was found to have left his four year old son alone at an Alicante hotel while he went out for drinks. The child was found wandering around the hotel car park naked in the early hours of the morning of September 3rd. Unbeknownst to the father, hotel staff phoned the police when they found the child alone – when he returned at 7am the next morning, the child wasn’t in the hotel room so the man went to the police station to report his son missing, and was arrested. Officers had in fact been trying to contact the father for much of the night, having called him repeatedly but without success. The boy did not speak Spanish but officers managed to communicate with him in French and asked him where he was staying. The child was able to bring officers to the hotel room, which was empty. When the officers still couldn’t contact the child’s father, they brought the boy to the health centre to ensure that there were no problems and once he was given the all clear, he was brought to the provincial home which is under the management of the social services department of the Valencian Government. The man was sentenced to a six month suspended jail term as well as a 32 month withdrawal of his parental rights over the child.

Seprona seeks sanctuary for suffering animals Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre (EHCRC) was contacted recently by Seprona, the Environmental Protection Division of the Guardia Civil, from Elche requesting immediate assistance in the rescue of three little ponies from the Crevillente area. Seprona had been alerted to the appalling state of the animals and on closer inspection decided they could not remain with the owner. The three emaciated ponies were seized and the officers contacted Rod Weeding cofounder of EHCRC. As always Rod dropped everything to go and help Seprona and these poor animals. However, when he arrived the owner was far from happy about his animals being taken away and argued quite heatedly with the officers but eventually he surrendered the equines. All three are now safe and have been seen and examined by the EHCRC Vet, Dorothea Dudli von Dewitz. The ponies

were incredibly malnourished, painfully thin, parasites inside and out and marks and scars on various parts of their bodies and their hooves needed attention. The little black and white pony is practically skeletal, with more severe scars on his back possibly from a badly fitting saddle. He arrived already with a head collar in

situ and on removing it EHCRC found a huge nut and bolt type fixture on the top of the head collar. It has come to light that this type of harness is used on ponies in the live carousels, which believe it or not are still legal in some parts of Spain. Kids line up as their parents pay for them to ride on these poor trapped ponies as they

go round and round and round in the heat of the baking sun as part of the ‘entertainment’ at fiestas and festivals. Education, raising awareness and changing public opinion for the better on animal welfare is a huge part of what EHCRC tries to do on a daily basis. This latest rescue is going to put so much more strain on the Centre financially as it brings the number of equines to over 120, but how could it refuse. Rod and Sue Weeding said: “How could we say no to helping these innocent creatures? We will continue to do our best but as always we need the help and support of the community to get these ponies in the best state of health possible. Well done to Seprona for acting so proactively and for deciding to follow up judicially; they have asked for detailed veterinary reports in order to pursue a prosecution. Until people stop treating animals this way, we have to help the authorities to continue to do their job of seizing these poor suffering animals and getting them out of these hellholes. Another huge step forward in animal welfare at least here in the southeast of Spain where we are now seeing the authorities take a stand for animal rights more and more. We would be grateful for any donations and thank you all so much.’ To donate or for more information check out their website www.easyhorsecare.net

Employment programme launched Torrevieja town hall has revealed its plans for a labour insertion programme, intended to reintroduce young unemployed people to the workforce. The programme, which was launched this week by Councillors Sandra Sánchez and Vicente Chazarra (councillors for personnel and employment, respectively), aims to employ 32 young people on full time contracts for a duration of 12 months and is being run in collaboration with the local development agency, ADL. The project is made possible thanks to two grants awarded by the Valencian Employment and Training Service, LABORA, and co financed by the European Social Fund.

Weather experts have predicted that another ‘gota fria’ is set to hit the Alicante region this week. The weather will remain unseasonably wet in parts as the fourth incidence of torrential rainfall in just one month is due to hit the area. The ‘gota fria’, a cold wet weather front, swept through northern Spain on Monday and is due to affect the entire peninsula by the end of the week. It is estimated that heavy rains will fall in the Alicante province on Wednesday. Experts revealed that over the last few months, many weather observatories across the province have collected three times as much rainwater than usual. The State Meteorological Agency has issued a warning about the arrival of a DANA (Isolated Depression in High Levels) as of Monday. It is expected that

the bad weather will travel from north to south in the east causing heavy precipitation (very heavy in parts), intense winds and dangerous sea conditions. With regard to the Valencian Community, the most intense rainfall is expected to take place on Wednesday. The regional government has urged town halls and local emergency service providers to be vigilant, paying special attention to emergency notices issued by the Emergency Coordination Center of the Generalitat. Citizens can also follow the emergency broadcast system online at www.112cv.gva.es or on twitter @ GVA112. In the eventuality of emergency incidents in the region, residents are asked to inform

Alicante man completes 13hour swim An Alicante swimmer has achieved his goal of crossing the sea between Ireland and Scotland - the equivalent distance to that of a marathon. After 13 gruelling hours in waters with a temperature of under 13ºC, Jorge Crivillés is one step further towards his target of completing the Seven Oceans title - an achievement that no Spanish swimmer has ever managed to date. So far, he has crossed the Santa Catalina Channel in California, the Tsugaru Channel in Japan, the English Channel between Dover and Calais (UK and France), and the Molokai Channel in Hawaii, in addition to the North Channel from Scotland to Ireland. This leaves him with only two more to do, one of which is the Cook Strait in New Zealand and which he is already planning for. Afterwards, Crivillés' final thrust will be the Strait of Gibraltar. He has in fact already swum this body of water, but in a neoprene suit - and to qualify for the Seven Oceans title, he needs to cross all of the above without one. Crivillés attempted the ScotlandIreland channel a year ago, but had to bail

out as he ended up suffering hypothermia - although he was determined to keep trying until he succeeded. He was facing extremely taxing conditions in the last six hours nearly half the crossing - with strong currents and high waves, and even coming face to face with a swarm of 'Lion Hair' jellyfish - a species so notorious and deadly that it even featured in an

instalment of Sherlock Holmes. Crivillés escaped relatively unharmed, but with several painful stings. Five kilometres from the Irish coast, he was trapped by a powerful current which kept him paddling constantly and getting nowhere for some time. "The last six hours were tremendously hard because the sea complicated things

greatly," he said. "However, I'm very happy to have closed this chapter of my life. My team's support was crucial in getting me to the shore." This support team, who followed the plucky swimmer by boat, included his brother Carlos Crivillés, his kayaking friend Rafa Pastor, and Mexican swimmer Nora Toledano - a woman who has already completed the Seven Oceans trial and swum the DoverCalais channel twice. Whether or not the ScotlandIreland crossing was to go ahead was a decision that could not be made until the eleventh hour due to currents and turbulence in fact, Crivillés, 48, had already flown three times before to Belfast and Donahadee but been forced to abort his attempts before even hitting the water. A member of the RC7 association and sponsored by the ASISA Foundation in order for his swims to raise money for the GEPAC cancer charity, Crivillés is hoping to complete the Cook Strait crossing before the end of this year.

Cove cleanup The Councillor for the Environment, Dámaso Aparicio, has announced that during the first half of September the coves of Cabo Roig and Aguamarina will be cleaned. However, this year the cleaning will be done from the sea, rather than from the cliff face. The the works have been awarded to the company Orthem, for a total amount of 2,930 euros plus VAT. Councillor Aparicio explained that "the action will allow the collection, removal and classification of all types of organic remains, such as wrappings, boxes, cigarette butts, food scraps, papers, bottles, rubble and contaminants, among others." The main objective of the Department of Environment is "to avoid the degradation of the environmental aspect of the cliffs and coves, improving the appearance and cleanliness in these areas where it is complicated, if not impossible, to reach with machines". The company will have a zodiac team

with experience in this type of work, with specialists who will carry out the cleaning of the area with the appropriate protective equipment for this type of work. The Councillor said that it is important to "raise awareness about the proper use of beaches and coves", so he has called for people "to avoid throwing rubbish away indiscriminately around the cliffs and coves, especially the types that take longer to disappear like plastics and cigarette butts, since they end up in the sea and “it is the marine life that suffers the consequences of this lack of sensitivity and civility”.

pensions and residencia The UK government has announced that it will continue to uprate the UK State Pension paid to people living in the EU each year for the next 3 years. The UK State Pension has already been uprated in the EU for the year April 2019 to March 2020. The government has now committed to uprating the UK State Pension paid to those living in the EU each year until March 2023, in the event that the UK leaves the EU without a deal. The government plans to negotiate an agreement with the EU to make sure UK State Pensions for those living in the EU will continue to be uprated in the longer term. The UK basic and new State Pension is uprated by either 2.5%, average wage growth or by prices growth as measured by the Consumer Price Index – whichever is highest. There is no need for individuals to take any action unless your circumstances change between now and 31 October, in which case you should contact the office that pays your pension/benefit to let them know. Information on pensions can be found at www.gov.uk/brexit-pensions. British Consul Sarah-Jane Morris said:

“From the many outreach events that we have held across Spain and the Facebook live sessions that we’ve done for UK nationals, we know that the uprating of pensions is an issue of great concern to many people living here, so I hope that the news will provide reassurance that their pensions will continue to rise”. For the latest information on how Brexit will affect UK nationals and the actions you need to take, do visit gov.uk/brexit, sign up for email alerts to the Living in Spain guide on gov.uk and follow Brits in Spain on Facebook.” Advice for UK nationals living in Spain, including on pensions, can be found at: https://www.gov.uk/living-inspain Meanwhile, UK nationals who may struggle to complete their residency applications will be helped by measures announced by the UK Government. Up to £3 million is being provided for organisations who will inform UK nationals who live in EU member states including Spain, about the need to register as resident and support them as they complete their applications. The Government wants to support those who may find it harder to complete all

the paperwork – focusing in particular on pensioners or disabled people, those living in remote areas or with mobility difficulties, and those needing assistance with language translation or interpretation. Organisations working with people who might be affected and who might require additional support can apply for project funding from the Foreign & Commonwealth Office from 19 September at gov.uk/fco. The fund’s programme team, based in London, will be running a series of webinars to provide bidders with a fuller understanding of the fund and an opportunity to ask questions on the bidding process. Interested organisations can find further detail at https://www.gov.uk/government/news /3-million-grant-to-help-uk-nationalsin-eu-for-brexit. Individuals wanting to access support with their residency applications will be able to contact organisations who are successful in their bid, once the funding has been awarded. In the meantime, UK nationals living in Spain should continue to prioritise registering as a resident by 31st October.

Thief poses as fake charity worker to steal phone A thief posing as a charity worker has stolen a brand new iPhone X from a Brit expat while she was dining in a Costa Blanca restaurant. ‘Distraction tactics’ were used as the con artist approached Jacqueline Parker and her two nephews whilst eating out in Javea’s Arenal area. The ‘pregnant-looking woman’ put a note asking for money on top of the Javea resident’s phone, before snatching both as staff asked her to leave.

“It’s caused so much hassle and upset I would rather people knew how this happened,” Jacqueline said. She explained that the woman came ‘inside’ the restaurant – which is not being named – and put the card over her phone. Her getaway was so quick, neither Jacqueline’s family nor staff initially noticed. However, after using the ‘Find My Phone’ app failed, Local Police were called.

“The police were brilliant. They looked everywhere but came back with nothing,” Jacqueline added. “The waitress said it was the first time she had come across this situation. Please be aware that this is happening and keep your personal belongings safe.” The iPhone X was ‘brand new’, and has a starting price of €1,000.

GBP / EUR UPDATE In the week that parliament returned from summer recess, there was a lot of drama over Brexit which spilled over to the pound. Early in the week, the prospect of an imminent general election caused the pound to fall an average of 0.8% against other major currencies on Monday. There was nothing in the ecostats to lift the political cloud; the manufacturing purchasing managers' index from Markit came in at 47.4, a seven-year low, like-for-like retail sales fell by0.5%, UK consumer confidence fell three points to -14 and business confidence was at its lowest since records began in 2012. This left all eyes on Brexit and there was much to see. The Prime Minister lost his slim majority of one when an MP defected, a cross-party group of MPs succeeded in taking control of the House to move forward on a Bill aimed to prevent a no-deal Brexit and 21 Conservative MPs had the whip removed after voting against the PM. Sterling strengthened in anticipation that the Bill would succeed, but Johnson’s lack of majority adds another layer of political uncertainty. The PM’s call for a general election was voted down with opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn stating that the priority was preventing a no-deal departure. Any further certainty on this front may assist the pound. However, there was also positive indications from Bank of England governor Mark Carney, who stated to the Parliamentary Treasury Committee that due to the preparations already made in the event of a no-deal departure, "the

impact of a no-deal Brexit would be less severe than first thought." His statement may have got lost in the dramatic news cycle, but it did not go unnoticed by the market and the pound strengthened by an average of 0.7% against major currencies. Brexit uncertainty continues to be a major influence on sterling and future developments in the coming weeks may cause further volatility. Manufacturing data across Europe were higher on the month, but five of the eight were still below the 50 mark; the headline for the accompanying PMI statement was “Eurozone manufacturing slump continues in August.” Germany’s numbers were the weakest at 43.5 and together with the fact that orders have been falling across the Eurozone at the fastest pace in six years, the euro was under pressure. However, it wasn’t all bad news for the euro, which made gains midweek against a weakened US dollar and the market welcomed the new coalition in Italy, which means that another general election has been averted. The main focus currently is on the plans of the European Central Bank (ECB). The ECB is due to meet next week and the market is anticipating a change in policy and the possibility of a cut in interest rates, a return of the quantitative easing programme or possibly both. Changes from the ECB are likely to impact the euro and investors will be watching closely in the run up to the meeting on 12th September for any indications of which way the ECB may be moving.

Cs demand San Miguel clean up Looking for winter activities? Try the U3A... Cs has criticised, what it calls, the "laziness" of the government team in cleaning the urban centre of San Miguel. "We believe that we must undertake the cleaning of the main streets immediately, especially in regard to the adequacy of the sidewalks, removing the bushes that grow incessantly in them," said Cs spokeswoman, María José Costa. She proposes the implementation of a ‘shock’ cleaning plan, “because the residents do not understand why, in fact, the hygienic maintenance of the town centre is not being

carried out at the same time as that of the urbanisations belonging to San Miguel". The spokesperson reminded the government (led by the PSOE with the support of IU and independent) "that all residents live in the area they, pay the same taxes and have the right to enjoy a clean municipality." She accused the government of trying to win over the residents of the urbanisations to the detriment of those in the town.

Stuck for something to do to pass the long, lazy days in Spain, or just looking for something to do that is a bit out of the ordinary? Or simply a chance to make new friends, take part in activities that you have maybe only just thought about before? Or do you have an idea for an activity that you could would like to take part in and possibly run for your own, and others satisfaction?

Right then, all you need to do is visit Torrevieja U3As Groups Fair at their HQ on Monday 30th September where you will be made welcome and can then browse around the displays of the groups currently being run by the U3A and talk to the Group Leaders. You can even join up to the Torevieja branch of the U3A for the princely sum of €5 which will give you a full year’s

subscription and the opportunity to sign up with any of the groups that may take your fancy. Usually there is no further outlay, just the initial joining fee! If you would like more information on Torrevieja U3A, simply visit the website torreviejau3a.org. and read all about the University of the Third Age. You can even find them on their (new) Facebook page, so what are you waiting for?

La Vuelta footage reveals rooftop drug garden La Vuelta de España, the world famous cycle race, had some unfortunate repercussions for a budding horticulturalist in Lleida this week. News helicopters covering stage eight of the event inadvertently captured footage of a rooftop cannabis growing factory. Just days after the footage was revealed, police moved in and confiscated 40 marijuana plants. Police officers – and any cycling fans with a keen eye – would have seen live footage of the rooftop plantation the race helicopter flew overhead. According to local daily newspaper, ARA, the police force was already aware of the situation, and the homeowner had already left the premises, leaving behind a collection of furniture on the street as well as the plants on the roof. No arrests were made when the police raided the property to remove the plants.

How to make a pension last a lifetime: The essential guide to financial success in retirement • Four years ago, a rule change had dramatic consequences for retirees • The reforms, known as 'pension freedoms', gave flexibility around spending • This means people can opt for something called drawdown, where you keep your money invested in shares and funds and take out income when you need it

F

our years ago, the Government brought in a rule change that had dramatic consequences for retirees. The reforms, known as 'pension freedoms', gave savers unprecedented flexibility around how they spend their hard‐earned cash in retirement. But with that freedom comes a huge responsibility to ensure you do not run out of money and end up living on the poverty line in old age. Before the rule change, most people simply bought an annuity, which is like an insurance policy that guarantees to provide a set income for life. While this is still an option — and for many people a wise choice — those who feel confident managing their own investments can instead now opt for something called drawdown, where you keep your money invested in shares and funds and take out an income as and when you need it. There is an alternative to managing your own funds, and that is where Seagate Wealth are on hand to help you make the right choices for you and your family. We can provide you with dedicated pensions solutions that offer a comprehensive range of investments coupled with local experience and expertise in a well‐ regulated, tax efficient manner. Careful planning — with the help of an adviser — means taking your money efficiently. When you have worked hard all your life for your money and it has not been handed to you on a plate, you deserve to enjoy it.

Creative craft ideas for the home Even though it's tempting to spend all your days outside enjoying the late summer sunshine, make time for these adult and kid-friendly fall crafts. These creative craft project will give you

such as Marigolds and dahlias — your pick. Pumpkin Stress Balls Fill orange balloons with rice and draw on faces with a black Sharpie to create stress-relieving pumpkins. Dip Dye Candles For a special Autumn glow, dip plain taper candles into a custom mixture of orange crayon shavings and melted candle wax. Just let them dry before you light 'em.

Winter wreath Bare wreaths can be brought from local stores such as craft suppliers or Chino Bazzars or you can make your own from metal wire. Once you have your base decorate with leaves, dried flowers and berries or felted balls or pom poms. Leaf Garland Cut fabric scraps in harvest hues in the shape of leaves and hang from string, tape or ribbon for an instant mantle upgrade. Hang the bunting around windows, doors, pictures or lights if you don’t have a fireplace. Colorful Acorns Paint stray acorns, pine cones or twigs in fun colours and then cover in glitter for display-worthy shine. These can be placed in decorated bowls, jars or vases. Wine Cork Pumpkin Put spare wine corks to use by gluing them together in a pumpkin-shape and decorating the ends with orange acrylic paint.

exactly what you need, whether it's a fun rainy day activity to keep your kids busy or a simple, affordable way to add seasonal cheer to your home. Best of all: Each and every one of these crafts double as autumn decorations that you can leave on display from September through to Christmas. Give your home a warm and cosy vibe with these ideas made with pumpkins, foliage, acorns, candy corn, and more fall favourites. Pumpkin Pots Dress up your mantle, front stoop, or dining room table with adorable flower arrangements. Carve out mini pumpkins just like normal, then cut the bottom of a water bottle, and drop it in to act as a vase. Fill with flowers

Pencil Cup Paint has the power to turn something ordinary into something unique — like an apple pencil holder your kids (or kid's teacher) will love. Simply decorate a mason jar to look like autumn fruit and finish with ribbon.

Salvaged Centre-piece Say cheese — graters, that is. Old or salvaged cheese graters make a lovely table display. You can spray paint or decorate with glitter then simply drop a tea light underneath so the illumination of the candle twinkles through. Bookmarks Make fun and decorative bookmarks by simply cutting shapes out of felt, decorate with beads, ribbon or glitter and glue to a clean lollipop stick.

More superrich in Spain since wealth tax

Spain’s super-rich population has grown 74 percent since wealth tax was reintroduced in 2011, in the middle of the economic recession as a measure to boost the countries coffers. Figures for 2017 released by Spanish tax authorities show that 611 taxpayers declared net assets of €30 million or more. In 2011 that number was 352. The number of citizens who declared property worth more than €1.5 million grew 35 percent for a total of 60,337 individuals. The Spanish Tax Agency’s statistics show that the ultra-wealthy have benefited from the economic recovery to a greater extent than other citizens. The levy is controversial, and Spain is one of the few remaining countries that still taxes an individual’s net assets (if these are in excess of €700,000) on top of income or capital gains. While it is a state levy, it has been devolved to the regions, leading to huge disparities depending on the location of an individual’s tax residence. The Madrid region, for instance, has a 100

percent allowance, meaning that its super-rich population has to pay nothing in wealth tax. This deprives the regional government of €955.6 million a year. Catalonia, which does collect the wealth tax, makes €498.5 million annually. Part of the reason why the super-rich population has grown so much is the fact that in 2012, the government of Mariano Rajoy, of the Popular Party (PP), introduced a tax amnesty that uncovered €40 billion that had been going undeclared until that point. The following year, the government approved a tax form known as Modelo 720 that forced individuals to declare their international assets or face a stiff fine. This uncovered €156 billion in assets that Spanish residents were keeping undeclared abroad. The tax agency’s statistics for 2015 show that there were 71 people worth more than €100 million that year, including athletes, artists, business leaders and the heirs of Spain’s wealthiest families.

Agadir

Three languages are spoken in the city: Tashelhit (first language of the majority), Moroccan Arabic, and French. The city was destroyed by an earthquake in 1960; it has been completely rebuilt with mandatory seismic standards. It is now the largest seaside resort in Morocco, where foreign tourists and many residents are attracted by an unusually mild year-round climate Agadir after 1960 The current city was rebuilt 2 km further south, led by the architects Jean-François Zevaco, Elijah Azagury, Pierre Coldefy, and Claude Verdugo. Agadir became a large city of

over half a million by 2004, with a large port with four basins: the commercial port with draft of 17 metres, triangle fishing, fishing port, and a pleasure boat port with marina. Agadir was the premier sardine port in the world in the 1980s and has a famous beach stretching over 10 km with one of the finest seafront promenades in the world With Marrakech, Agadir is a very important centre for tourism to Morocco, and the city is the most important fishing port in the country. With its white buildings, wide flowered boulevards, modern hotels and European style cafes, Agadir is not a typical city of traditional Morocco but it is a modern, active and dynamic city, turned towards the future. New Talborjt This area is named after the old district of Talborjt (meaning "small fort" in local Berber, in remembrance of the water tower which was first built on the plateau in the former Talborjt). Lively, the New Talborjt which has been rebuilt away from the Old Talborjt, has as a main artery the Boulevard Mohammed Sheikh Saadi, named after the victor against the Portuguese in 1541. Some good hotels and restaurants have been built on the main arteries.

Old Talborjt Overlooking the waterfront and Wadi Tildi, this old district (whose name is sometimes spelled Talbordjt) was once a shopping area and very lively with its large square where there was a weekly market, hotels, schools, mosque 90% of the buildings in Old Talborjt were destroyed or severely damaged by the earthquake in 1960. The Abattoir (Industrial area) One of the most popular neighbourhoods, it is known for its Square for taxis and buses. It is a junction that unites the heart of the city and its surroundings. This district was the least affected by the earthquake of 1960. Souk El Had This is the largest market in the region. It has about 6,000 small shops. It is surrounded by walls and has several entrances. It is organized into different sectors: furniture, crafts, clothing, vegetables, meat, spices etc. It is possible to find all kinds of handicrafts and traditional decorations. La Médina La Médina is a handicrafts space created in 1992 by the Italian artist Coco Polizzi, at Ben Sergao, a district close to Agadir 4.5 km from the city centre. Built using techniques of traditional Berber construction, it is a kind of small open-air museum, on five hectares and home to artisan workshops, a museum, individual residences, a small hotel, and an exotic garden. Climate Agadir features a subtropicalsemiarid climate with warm summers and mild winters. Located along the Atlantic Ocean, Agadir has a very temperate climate. The daytime temperature generally stays in the 20s °C (70s °F) every day, with the winter highs typically reaching 20.4 °C or 68.7 °F in December and January. Places to visit • The view of the city and the bay from Agadir Oufella (Casbah) • Bert Flint Museum on Boulevard Mohammed V • Valley of the Birds, a pleasant bird park stretching along the Avenue of Administrations, between Boulevard Hassan II and 20 August • The garden of Ibn Zaidoun • Mohammed V Mosque, on the Boulevard President Kennedy • Souk el Had • The little train of Agadir: circuit around the city • Amazigh (Berber) Heritage Museum at the Ayt Souss Square • The garden of Olhão or "Garden of Portugal" and its memorial museum in Talborjt • The marina with its Moorish architecture and shops

Our son is a layabout

No time to ourselves

Our son has turned into a pot-smoking layabout who refuses to discuss his future with his Dad and me. He won‘t take a job, and he didn't do well in his exams. He is always short of money, and to our annoyance we have discovered that his grandmother has been supporting him.

For months now we had looked forward to the birth of our baby, but it has been a real culture shock. We find we have absolutely no time to ourselves. I am still trying to work from home, and I am exhausted most of the time. So is my husband, and we don’t get any real time together. It is started to affect our relationship. We don’t have any family or friends nearby, so don't get any help.

First of all you must go to the source of his income and speak to his Grandmother in very strong terms, that she is not helping him become independent. Perhaps she doesn’t realise the money she is giving him is being used for dope? If she doesn’t understand the implications then paint a very clear picture of his future to her if she continues to fund him. Hopefully the withdrawal of cash should sort him out, but he needs to realise that he can’t spend his whole life living this way, and will have to shape up at some point. From what you say, his friends are all moving on and going to University. Maybe in time he'll pull his socks up, otherwise he will be left behind.

Why don’t you go along to a parent and baby group. You will meet other parents there and believe me, they are in the same position as yourselves - exhausted and in need of a break. Once you have got to know the others, you could suggest minding their children sometime, and they could do the same for you. Alternatively you can find a good babysitter at registered agencies. It is important that you both get a rest. You can’t be super-parents - it's about making time and taking a break.

HOW SOON CAN YOU SELL A HOME AFTER BUYING IT

Rebecca Serwotka

Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward – 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today! Featured on Best Buy Spain – Property TV – Sky Channel 189.

Most times you’ll hear people say, you should keep your property for at least 5 years before selling it, especially if you want to recoup the legal costs too. However, there are times that this rule is just a myth, and should be ignored.

1

. You purchased it low and the value has gone up. If you bought a “bargain,” and the market is hot, selling up sooner rather than later is absolutely the right thing to do. You purchased it low, knowing you’d make a tidy profit, so there’s no point in waiting for 5 years, if you can make money on it now.

2

. The area has gone down. Buying in an area that is going downhill will ultimately have a negative effect, on your home’s value. Selling as soon as possible would be the ideal scenario, to try to salvage as much of your home’s equity as possible. Sometimes it’s better to cut your losses and get out while you can.

3

. You hate living there. Money isn’t everything, and if you just really hate living there, then you most definitely should sell. There is no legal limit on how long you have to keep a property after buying it. You could purchase on a Monday and sell it on Tuesday! The decision of how long to own a home, is entirely up to you.

Selling? Enjoy the journey! Thinking of selling your home, and want to know what papers you’ll be required to provide? Send an email to sales@homes4u.es to request the list. See our advert in the centre pages of this newspaper. www.homes4u.es

Cinderella comes to San Fulgencio The Fairy Godmother’s iwand is playing up – causing all sorts of problems for her and the cast of Cinderella! Will she able to send Cinders to the ball?! This wellloved tale is the subject of the Stagestruck Christmas Show – to be staged at the Teatro Cardenal Belluga in San Fulgencio at the

end of November. Written and directed by Suzanne Stokes, all the favourite characters are there – but with a few twists, lots of humour, singing and dancing, and special effects including a dazzling laser show. So don’t miss the antics of the ugly sisters, Listeria and Fartina – or maybe the chance to do a bit of line dancing… Performance dates are 28th 29th and 30th November at San Fulgencio. Curtain up at 7.30 pm Tickets, priced at 10 euros available at The Card Place, Benijofar, the Post Box, Doña Pepa, and Cards and More, La Marina. You can also book on line by emailing stagestruck.show@gmail.com or call 625 883 387 Last year Stagestruck was able to donate 8000 euros to the Alzheimer’s Society.

DIVAS at Hondón Carnival

The Hondón de los Frailes Carnival took place on a recent Saturday as part of the week long Fiesta celebrations. DIVAS (Drama in the Valley Association) once again took part in the Carnival parade and this year the group had a “Chinese” theme. Together with a beautifully decorated float and an amazing dragon, 19 members and friends took part in delightful colourful costumes made by a talented costume maker. The parade weaved its way through the narrow

streets and those taking part were delighted when the multi-national onlookers showed their appreciation by applauding as they passed by. The evening was truly memorable - full of lights, music and colourful and inventive costumes including very young local children and a number of associations and groups. DIVAS would like to welcome new members to our group and further information can be obtained by emailing hondondivas@gmail.com

Bingeworthy Box Sets My Brilliant Friend This adaptation of Elena Ferrante’s moving tale of female friendship is the perfect combination of heart-warming innocence and devastating reality. Following the lives of Elena and Lila, two girls from post-war Naples, My Brilliant Friend tracks their journey as they grow up and experience the world. The casting really shines here; the young Italian actresses cast to play both child and teenage Elena and Lila have an authenticity about them which gives the show something special.

Catastrophe When two become one after a fling ends up in an unexpected pregnancy, Sharon and Rob must figure out what to do next. Written by and starring Sharon Horgan and Rob Delaney, Catastrophe follows the couple as they decide to try and forge a relationship while juggling the realities of pregnancy complications and family feuds.

Aesthetic Breast Surgery is the most in Demand for Women and Men in Spain B

reast surgery for women, and gynaecomastia surgery for men, are the two most popular aesthetic interventions for the population. Every year, over 18,000 patients in Spain undergo mammoplasty, followed far behind by liposuction, blepharoplasty or eyelid correction, rhinoplasty and abdominoplasty. In light of this information, Doctor José Salvador, Head of the Plastic Surgery Service at Quirónsalud Alicante and Torrevieja, explains that, “The breast area is the one that can generate the most self-esteem conflicts, for men as well as for women. In second place, we have protruding ear surgery for men, and eyelid surgery for both genders.” “While the goal of gynaecomastia surgery is to eliminate the increased mammary volume that often appears in males during their youth (due to hormonal

problems) or as adults (due to excessive fat deposits on the mammary area), a mammoplasty seeks to increase the size of the breasts in women, whether it is a simple enlargement or due to a need to lift the breasts and remodel their shape after pregnancies and breastfeeding,” states Doctor Salvador. As for the age bracket that submits to the greatest amount of these interventions, the surgeon says that they are between eighteen and twenty-five years old, “though there is also a second peak in a more mature age bracket, between forty and fifty years of age.” The increase in this type of intervention is due to body worship and the safety of the interventions. “Body worship, the need to look good, and the ease of going to clinics staffed with excellent plastic and aesthetic surgery professionals have led to steadily

increasing demand for these surgeries, which will be more and more in demand,” clarifies the surgeon. This excellence, as well as the incorporation of innovative technology performed by some hospital centres, has made Alicante one of the favourite destinations of patients from other countries for the performance of plastic and aesthetic surgical interventions. “The choice of Alicante is based on the fact that it is a well-known city in Europe, where plastic surgery with a high degree of professionality is available, and because its climate and attractive beaches create an opportunity to mix surgery with leisure,” according to Doctor Salvador.

Plastic surgery rumours made Zellweger 'sad' From plastic surgery to Harvey Weinstein, no topic was off-limits in Renée Zellweger’s new interview with Vulture. She also talked about being diagnosed with depression during her six-year hiatus from Hollywood and is sure to get the rumour mill going by referencing an ex-boyfriend of hers who is gay. The Bridget Jones’s Diary actress, who portrays Judy Garland in the new biopic Judy, talked about the big to-do over

her appearance — and whether she altered it — in 2014 at the Elle Women in Hollywood Awards, which led to her penning an essay for HuffPost entitled “We Can Do Better.” “There’s a value judgment that’s placed on us,” Zellweger said. “As if it somehow is a reflection of your character — whether you’re a good person or a weak person or an authentic person.” The star, who was on a self-imposed

hiatus from Hollywood at the time of the kerfuffle, went on to say that “the implication” was that “I somehow needed to change what was going on because it wasn’t working. That makes me sad. I don’t look at beauty in that

way. And I don’t think of myself in that way. I like my weird quirkiness, my offkilter mix of things. It enables me to do what I do. I don’t want to be something else. I got hired in my blue jeans and cowboy boots with my messy hair. I started working like that. I didn’t have to change to work. So why was I suddenly trying to fit into some mold that didn’t belong to me?” Zellweger was unwillingly pulled into the Weinstein drama — despite keeping

silent about the disgraced movie mogul, who produced the three films she received Oscar nods for Bridget Jones’s Diary,Chicago and Cold Mountain. That’s because, in a classaction lawsuit filed last year, actress Melissa Sagemiller claimed that Weinstein had told her that he’d received “sexual favors” from Zellweger and Charlize Theron. Through her rep at the time, Zellweger said, “If Harvey said that, he’s full of sh**.”

Holidaymaker steps in to fly plane to Alicante An off-duty pilot starting his summer holiday with his family ended up flying the plane to Spain himself after the original captain did not turn up. Michael Bradley, who works for easyJet, announced to his fellow passengers from the tarmac of Manchester Airport that he had offered to step in and fly them all to Alicante in order to avoid a two-hour delay. Pointing to his wife and son "sitting in row 15" of the plane, the airman said she had learned of the delay before they set off for the airport from home, and told him with a "punch to the back of the head" at 3am. Because of this, he deliberately packed his licence and ID, just in case. Before going through airport security, he decided to make a call to see if his services were needed. Recalling the incident over the public address system, he said: "So I phoned up easyJet and said: 'Hiya, I'm standing in the terminal doing nothing... and I'd very much like to go on holiday - and if you need a favour, I'm standing here ready to go.' "And they said: 'We'll phone you back.'" The easyJet representative phoned back 38 seconds later, Mr Bradley said, with their official request: "Please, please,

pretty please with a big cherry on top, could you fly the airplane to Alicante." Amid laughter and applause from the cabin, Mr Bradley said he hoped everyone would "be all right" with one of their pilots dressing in holiday attire rather than the usual uniform, adding: "Then we'll go to Alicante."

Michelle Hannah Potts, a passenger on the flight, detailed her experience on Facebook, saying she had been expecting a delay after seeing it on the board, before it abruptly changed to the original timing. "Had to leg it across the airport to get on the flight," she wrote. Inquiring at the gate about the quick

change, she said: "Asked the guy at the desk what's going on and he said: 'Oh your pilots gone missing but a guy that's going on your flight is going to fly the plane.' "Luckily the guy was actually a pilot! Probably would of been cancelled if it wasn't for him! Legend." In a statement, easyJet said it was "grateful" to Mr Bradley for volunteering, saying it highlighted the "commitment and dedication of our crew wanting to go the extra mile". The company added: "This is fully in line with regulations as he had his licence and ID with him. Safety is always our highest priority." EasyJet said the delay to Mr Bradley's flight was due to a knock-on effect of a French air traffic control failure on Sunday, which led to the company relying on standby resources across its network. "[Mr Bradley] was well rested, having previously had four days off and was legally permitted to fly the aircraft," the company said. "Clearly, this is exceptional, but shows the commitment and dedication of our crew wanting to go the extra mile."

Brands embrace plantbased foods The launch of the Greggs vegan sausage roll felt like something marketing experts and cultural commentators would be pulling apart for years to come. But it was an iconic move for Greggs: its profits leapt more than 50 percent, to £40.6m, in the first six months of 2019. Queues were forming at Greggs branches up and down the land and the Quorn factory in Darlington, where the filling is made, was going into overdrive. It was hard to keep up with demand for the piping-hot, fermented-fusarium-venenatumstrain-PTA-2684-based snack. The snack was launched with all the fanfare of an Apple product and the vegan sausage roll is now one of Greggs’ five bestsellers, but sales of all of its ranges have increased to the point that Whiteside was able to distribute a £35m special dividend to shareholders in July. The company is looking into vegan versions of its other bestsellers. Greggs is emblematic of the “vegan halo” effect, by which companies that have embraced veganism have reaped the rewards. In May, the “fast-casual” chain Leon reported that its sales for 2018 were up 24.5 percent to £95m. A lot of that is down to offerings such as jack wings, in which jackfruit replaces fried chicken, and the beetroot-based love burger. In January 2018, 46 percent of Leon’s sales were

vegetarian, while 34 percent were vegan. By January 2019, those totals were up to 64 percent and 55percent. The Love burger is the chain’s third-most popular item, prominently displayed on menus and posters. Papa John’s, the pizza chain, has also seen a boost from its vegan “sheese” range, which launched in January. The phenomenon is not confined to food. Dr Martens boots have strolled in and out of fashion many times in the past few decades, but the brand is

proving a hit with eco-conscious teenagers – and celebrities such as Kristen Stewart, Jessica Alba and Gigi Hadid. Dr Martens has been owned by Permira, a private equity company, since 2014. Private equity companies, as a rule, tend to value profits over ethical niceties. But it is increasingly hard to separate the two. Permira has helped Dr Martens almost triple its revenues, from £160m in 2013

to £454m in 2019. Something like the reverse seems to be happening with brands that place meat front and centre – at least according to Cardlytics, which tracks purchase data from 2.5m UK bank accounts. Overall, the fast food sector, which has seen huge growth in recent years, saw a 1 percent decline in spending last year. The chains that suffered some of the biggest falls were burger and fried-chicken brands: down 7 percent and 6 percent, respectively. “On-the-go” food companies such as Leon, Eat and Pret a Manger – which have made visible efforts to foreground vegan options – saw spending rise by 5 percent. In some ways, the clamour doesn’t make a lot of sense, given that only about 1 percent of Britons are vegan, according to the Vegan Society. The owner of one food company complained that, not so long ago, he invested lots of time and money to develop gluten-free versions of his products – then people stopped buying them. He is working on vegan versions, but is mindful that the trend may not stick around forever.

Firefox’s latest version blocks thirdparty trackers You’ve had the ability since October, and in June they made it official, but it’s only today that Mozilla’s Firefox web browser will protect your privacy by blocking third-party tracking software for all its users by default — theoretically keeping companies from keeping tabs on your online activity and potentially selling it to others. That’s because with Firefox version 69, Mozilla just flipped the switch to turn on its Enhanced Tracking Protection for all users, instead of just new users (as it did in June) or making you opt-in if you want to try it (as it did last October). “Currently over 20 percent of Firefox users have Enhanced Tracking Protection on. With today’s release, we expect to provide protection for 100% of ours users by default,” reads the company’s Tuesday blog post. Mozilla’s protection doesn’t go quite as far as Apple’s Safari web browser in that Firefox merely blocks a long list of supposed bad actors, rather than all third-party tracking software. But it may allow some sites to operate that rely on cookies to help serve up legitimate content, too.

Journey to Jupiter's icy moon starts in the Arctic Britney Schmidt, an astrobiologist, sat in a small yellow tent, carefully studying the handful of monitors set up before her. They displayed a livestream of telemetry data, sonar readings and a video feed from a robotic vehicle exploring the oceanic underbelly of Antarctica’s ice near the United States’ McMurdo Station. The exploration is part of an effort to ultimately search for life in the alien ocean of Europa, one of Jupiter’s moons. The mission will also help us understand the physics of melting glaciers, and prepare for sealevel rise. Europa has an ocean that covers the whole globe and is capped by a thick layer of ice. It is one of the spots humans are most likely to find life beyond Earth. The ice-covered ocean in Antarctica is an apt testing ground for technology we might one day send to Europa. Schmidt and her Georgia Tech team launched the robotic vehicle, named Icefin, through a hole in the 12-foot-thick layer of ice covering the ocean below. The video feed shows a wall of ice stretching down into the abyss. This is the underside of the Erebus Glacier Tongue, a glacier that flows off the

nearby land, plows into the frozen ocean, and plunges 1,000 feet down into the water. Every once in a while, some of Antarctica’s wondrous marine life swims past. It's an otherworldly environment — and that is exactly the point. But Icefin itself will not go to Europa, and any robotic mission to the Jovian moon is probably decades away. While Icefin’s great-greatgrandchild may become an interplanetary explorer, Icefin itself is tackling another, more immediate, scientific challenge: understanding melting glaciers. Glaciers around the world are disappearing at an unprecedented rate. According to a recent study, 335 billion tons of glacial ice is lost each year, amounting to about 0.04 inches of sea-level rise per year. Just in August, Iceland held a funeral for the first of its glaciers to be lost to global warming. Now, as the ocean warms, its role in melting glaciers from below is the subject of intense research. Schmidt directs Icefin toward a critical juncture underneath the glacier: the grounding line. This is where the glacier lifts off the seabed and starts to float on the ocean. “That's the

most dynamic part of the climate system,” Schmidt said. “As the ocean warms up, it's eroding that place. And then the grounding line moves back over time and that can make the whole thing unstable.” But the grounding line is also deep below the ice, far out of reach of divers and boats. This robot, however, even if still wearing its space-explorer training wheels, is able to reach it. Schmidt said that the Erebus Glacier Tongue is not at immediate risk of collapsing. And even if it were, it is a relatively small glacier that would not contribute much to sea-level rise. But it is a good training ground for Icefin to test its functionality before heading to a much bigger glacier. While EGT is in healthy condition, other Antarctic glaciers are in a much more precarious state.

Investigtion This autumn, Schmidt and Icefin will join an international effort to investigate the Thwaites Glacier. Thwaites is roughly the size of Florida and

is at risk of catastrophic collapse. If that happens, it could trigger a sealevel rise of up to 11 feet, flooding coastal cities around the globe. Scientists don’t know when or how fast this glacier might collapse - and this is where Icefin can help. Schmidt will deploy Icefin to map the underside of Thwaites Glacier at its grounding line. If successful, it will make three-dimensional maps of the environment and collect data about the water chemistry that will inform scientists about the delicate iceocean-land juncture. That, in turn, will help scientists understand how stable Thwaites is, and how fast it might disintegrate. “We're motivated in the long run by getting this data that will send us into space,” Schmidt said. But, she added, meanwhile, “there's important climate problems and really just unknowns about the earth that we live on. And so, by thinking about it like a spacecraft problem, you’re actually able to see the earth in kind of a new way.”

Eating dark chocolate and red wine could protect against disease Most people want to do their best to lower the risk of developing scary illnesses like cancer and heart disease. While some factors like genetics can’t be helped, certain lifestyle tweaks can decrease your odds. According to a new study published in the journal Nature Communications, eating a diet rich in flavonoids, compounds found in plantbased foods and drinks, can reduce your risk of dying from cancer and heart disease. The study analyzed data from the Danish Diet, Cancer and Health cohort that collected information on the diets of 53,048 Danes over 23 years. Researchers discovered that people who regularly consumed “moderate” amounts of flavonoidrich foods had an inverse relationship with dying from heart disease or cancer. (Meaning, the more flavonoids they consumed, the lower their risk.) This effect topped out at having about 500 milligrams a day, researchers found. The study also showed a strong link between consuming regular doses of flavonoids, smoking, and drinking alcohol. People who

were at a high risk of developing chronic diseases due to smoking and drinking more than two alcoholic drinks a day seemed to benefit the most from eating flavonoid-rich foods. That doesn’t mean that eating flavonoid-rich foods will wipe out the harmful effects of excessive

drinking and smoking, the researchers warn. But, the study found, it may help lower the risk of developing chronic diseases from these habits. While flavonoids are known to be good for you, the researchers aren’t totally sure what it is about them that lowers the risk of developing certain diseases. Flavonoids fight inflammation and improve blood vessel function, which could play a role, lead researcher Nicola Bondonno, a post-doctoral research fellow at Australia’s Edith Cowan University,

said in a press release. Beyond that, though, more research is needed. Flavonoids are a group of compounds usually found in fruits, vegetables, grains, bark, roots, stems, flowers, tea, and wine. Flavonoids are known for their anti-inflammatory and anticarcinogenic properties, and are noted for their antioxidant benefits. Flavonoids are also a sub-class of polyphenols, a category of plant compounds that have been linked to a slew of health benefits, such as a decreased risk of developing heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. Flavonoids are phenolic compounds found in most plants and are the most plentiful of all the non-nutrient bioactive constituents of foods. Since the amount of flavonoids can vary widely in foods, and the amount needed for optimal health isn’t known, there is no Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) or Daily Value (DV) for flavonoids. But as a whole, flavonoid-rich foods are ones you definitely want to have in regular rotation in your diet.

Get a Better Night's Sleep We get it, life is busy, but here’s something you should know: sleep used to be considered one of the three pillars of health and wellness, along with diet and exercise. Today, though, research points to sleep being the foundation to living a better life, says Terry Cralle, certified sleep educator for the Better Sleep Council. So let-s take a look at what we need to focus on in order to get the rest we need.

Block out noise You may not recall the racket caused by yesterday’s midnight rubbish pickup, but your body probably does. Even if you don’t wake up, noise can disrupt your slumber and cause restlessness, increased heart rate and blood pressure, and changes in breathing patterns. These interruptions can lead to fragmented sleep, which makes it harder to reach the deeper, more restorative stages. Earplugs are a great way to avoid disturbances. Try usung soft foam earplugs which mould to the shape of your ear canal, filtering out noise almost completely. Another idea: Consider buying a fabric headboard or a plush rug to help minimise noises.

Aromatherapy Creating a bedtime ritual that includes diffusing essential oils 30 minutes before hiting the sack is a simple and effective way to cue the body to rest. Not only are there certain scents that encourage drowsiness, but the very act of setting up a routine helps signal to your brain that it’s time to start shutting off. For ultimate rest try this suggested blend: seven drops

of lavender, four drops of frankincense, four drops of cedarwood, and two drops of bergamot.

Chill out Body temperature regularly fluctuates throughout the day—it’s usually at its highest in the afternoon and lowest in the early morning. So if your room is hot, your body will work all night to cool down— and if you’re sweating, you’re more likely to wake up. The sweet spot: 65 degrees, according to the National Sleep Foundation. An easy-to-install thermostat can help you keep the temperature just right. If you have an air-conditioned bedroom, don’t be tempted to set the temperature too low. Keep it on cool but set at around 23-25 degrees the room will be cool but not cold and this temperature also minimises the risk of throat and chest infections.

Improve ventilation Room stuffiness can hike nasal congestion and hinder your ability to breathe while you doze. Per a study in the journal Indoor Air, people who kept their window open overnight felt more alert the next morning than they did when it had been kept

closed. If you live in a city and opening your window exposes you to noise, crack it open for 15 minutes during the day instead. No windows? No problem. Invest in a plant like a peace lily, which naturally purifies air.

Skip that chocolate dessert Whether it’s ice cream, brownies, biscuits, cakes or sweets — all cocoa contains caffeine. Which means your nightly choccie habit could be costing you precious Zzzzz’s. If you want to indulge your sweet tooth, consider yogurt (high in muscle-relaxing magnesium) topped with fresh cherries (which contain melatonin).

Pass on the booze Alcohol is a double-edged sword. Yes, that nightcap might initially help you doze off, but don’t be fooled—it reduces sleep quality, explain the experts. That’s because while booze is linked to increasing certain sleepy feelings, it also causes you to wake up repeatedly, interfering with restorative sleep. Instead of pouring yourself a glass right before you hit the hay, take your last sips two hours earlier.

Put down your phone In theory, a feature like

Apple’s Night Shift is supposed to help reduce the impact of melatonin suppression (a.k.a. that wired feeling you get from staring at your phone) by enabling users to make screen light “more warm.” However, a study in the journal Lighting Research & Technology showed that changing screen colour alone does not completely eliminate the impact on melatonin levels. Unfortunately, scrolling yourself to sleep is a bad idea no matter how you look at it. Just as with alcohol, it’s suggested that you try to avoid staring at any screen one to two hours before bedtime.

Think about what you brush with Peppermint toothpaste and mouthwash might help bad breath in the morning, but it should be avoided at night. Minty flavours keep us alert.

Instead, opt for something milder, such as a herb or spice toothpaste. Weleda’s Calendula Toothpaste is an amazon best seller and its fresh fennel taste will make you feel clean and calm.

Be careful with meds Along with some cough and cold remedies, certain over-the-counter migraine medications are packed with caffeine and could be the culprit for keeping you up. Make sure you check the label and go for pain relievers without the stimulant.

Weird things linked to memory loss later in life

S

cience suggests that what’s good for your body is also good for your mind: Exercise, a balanced diet, and maintaining a healthy weight all seem to be good for the brain, and may even reduce buildup of proteins related to Alzheimer’s disease. But there are lots of other factors that can affect your risk of dementia or age-related memory loss. Some are obvious (like genetics). Others are less so. Here are a few that might surprise you. Herpes Earlier this year, scientists made the surprising discovery that the herpes virus may play a role in the development of Alzheimer's disease. In a study of nearly 1,000 human brains, published in the journal Neuron, researchers found that the brains of people who died of Alzheimer's disease had up to twice the levels of herpes simplex virus 6 and 7 compared to those who died of other causes. These two types of herpes are extremely common and are known to cause the childhood rash roseola. According to the researchers' findings, these viruses seemed to interact with genes also linked to Alzheimer's disease. In another recent study, published in Neurotherapeutics, scientists found that people with herpes simplex 1—the type of herpes that causes cold sores—were three times as likely to develop Alzheimer's disease later in life, compared to people without. Taking antiviral drugs to treat herpes symptoms seemed to reduce their risk, however, suggesting that these medications may be protective against dementia, as well.

Air pollution Older women who live in areas with high levels of pollution are 92 percent more likely to develop dementia than women living in cleaner-air climates, according to a 2017 study. The link was strongest in women who had the APOE4 gene, a genetic variation that increases the risk for Alzheimer’s disease. If these results hold true in the general population, the study authors say, air pollution could be responsible for about 21 percent of dementia cases. When we breathe in these tiny particles, it can trigger inflammation throughout the body. And for certain people, inflammation seems to be a way of pressing the fast-forward button on the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.” Poor sleep You know that missing out on a good night’s sleep can lead to brain fog the next day, but research also suggests that disturbed sleep over time may be linked to a buildup of Alzheimer's-related brain proteins. Scientists believe that exercise loosens up amyloid proteins in the brain that have been linked to Alzheimer's disease, but that good quality sleep is required to actually dispose of them. Sleep is absolutely essential for taking out the garbage and keeping your brain healthy over time.

Poor sense of smell How well a person can recognise familiar odours may soon be an important clue to predicting the development of dementia. A 2016 study published in Annals of Neurology found that volunteers who had more trouble identifying scents like menthol, clove, strawberry, and lemon seemed to be at an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

When someone can’t distinguish between different smells, it may absolutely be a signal that Alzheimer’s disease is brewing. However, it can also be a sign of Parkinson’s disease and other neurological problems. Experts say a scratch-and-sniff test could be an inexpensive, non-invasive way to pinpoint people who might benefit from early treatment or prevention strategies. Your eating pattern When patients ask what they can do to reduce their risk of dementia some

experts recommend eating an early dinner—and then nothing until breakfast the next morning. Fasting for a minimum of 12 hours, as well as eating fewer calories overall, may be a way to promote brain health as we age. Restricting your eating overnight can trigger the body to burn ketone bodies— a type of brain-healthy fat—rather than carbohydrates, he explains. It helps you fuel the brain with something that’s not only more efficient from an energy-burning standpoint, but that may have an anti-aging effect as well.

Loneliness Research shows that older adults who report feeling socially isolated may be at higher risk for Alzheimer’s disease. In a 2016 study from JAMA Psychiatry, senior citizens whose brain scans showed the development of amyloid protein clusters were 7.5 times more likely to be classified as lonely than those whose scans were negative. Experts aren’t sure which comes first— if dementia symptoms cause people to feel left out or withdraw from social activities, or if feeling lonely actually promotes the development of dementia—but they suspect the relationship may go both ways.

Concussions For people with a family history of Alzheimer’s, a blow to the head might accelerate the cognitive and brain changes associated with the disease. In a recent study in the journal Brain, young to middle-aged adults who’d had at least one concussion and had genetic risk factors for Alzheimer’s had less gray matter in parts of the brain associated with dementia, compared to other study participants. Those same participants also performed worse on a simple recall test, suggesting that these brain changes could have real consequences on memory functioning. Researchers hope they may be able to use these findings to identify people at risk for Alzheimer’s disease at an earlier age.

High blood pressure You know that high blood pressure is bad for your body and your brain, so the results of a recent study published in Alzheimer's & Dementia may catch you off-guard: When hypertension develops in old age, it appears to actually reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. As we get more frail, having a reserve of blood pressure may actually be protective. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t worry about high blood pressure earlier in life, though. The research is clear that for young and middle-aged adults, untreated hypertension appears to increase the risk of developing dementia later in life. Knowing your numbers when it comes to blood pressure, cholesterol, and body mass index—and talking with your doctor about how you can optimize those numbers—is still one of the most important things you can do.

Social Media Dangers! Most people know that using a mobile phone when driving is wrong, even though we will all witness it on a regular basis. It is illegal, because it is potentially deadly. However, the days of using a mobile just to make a call are long gone, as the development of the smart phone has led to an increase in the potentially lethal use. According to figures from the DGT, 12% of drivers and 31% of pedestrians make regular and dangerous use of social networks, a percentage which has increased in the last five years. The most recent report of distractions prepared through collaboration with BP, Castrol and the RACE highlights how there is “an exponential increase in dangerous attitudes in traffic related to the use of the mobile phone. The report is based on a survey of 2,132 people aged between 18 and 65 years of age in 17 Autonomous Communities. According to this survey, 96% confessed to seeing someone talking on the mobile while driving (80% on a regular basis), and 76% using the mobile phone without speaking (manipulating or looking at it). According to the report, "those who a few years ago were children and teenagers are now drivers between 18 and 24 years old and, with their arrival at the wheel, have increased exponentially new dangerous uses of the smartphone, without implying a decrease in the usual dangers" -like talking hands-free or using the mobile to chat or look at the email. In addition, "people belonging to other age ranges are also much more familiar with new technologies, and have integrated them into their day-to-day life." The biggest gap between the smallest age group and the total number of drivers occurs in the use of social networks: 12% of the total respondents confess to using them regularly while driving, raising the percentage to 17% among young people

18 to 24 years. The use of social networks behind the wheel on a regular basis is in fifth place, behind the manipulation of the mobile such as GPS (25%), instant messaging (19%), hands-free calls (14%) or email reading (13%). Derived from these uses of the mobile behind the wheel, approximately 530,000 drivers acknowledge having suffered a mishap or incident because of a distraction. Comparing the data of the 2019 report with those of the 2014 we found a

worrying increase. Five years ago, only 0.5% of drivers confessed to using this device to consult social networks (12% regularly in 2019). Only 1% used them to take photos and videos (12% this year). Almost 8% used it as a GPS device (in 2019 this percentage reaches 25%). Among the 'traditional' uses we also find an increase, although more restrained, when using the phone to send or receive hands-free calls (12% then and 14% in 2019) or instant messaging (14.4% versus at 19% current).

Pride of Spain Awards 2019

Last chance to nominate Now in its thirteenth year, the Costa Blanca People’s Pride of Spain Awards celebrates ordinary people who do extraordinary things, with nominees reflecting the core value of giving for the good of other people, and the community at large here on the Costa Blanca. Once you decide what category your nominee fits into you can nominate someone - a family member, a colleague, a community member or even someone you respect and admire from afar - who you feel deserves recognition for what they do or have achieved. At the heart of the Costa Blanca People’s Pride of Spain Awards is Costa Blanca People boss, Claire Richards, who started the original concept and continues to drive the initiative with her hard work and commitment. Claire told us, “When we launched the Costa Blanca People Pride of Spain Awards in 2007, our aim was simple – to unearth and celebrate our unsung heroes - the people who make this community great. It’s hard to believe that it is thirteen years later, and The Pride of Spain Awards have exceeded our wildest expectations. Each

year, we continue to be overwhelmed by the stories of selfless actions, courage, compassion and heroism. This is our chance to celebrate the fact that every day countless expat residents go out of their way to help their neighbours, often receiving little recognition for the extraordinary contributions they make to their communities. All of us know someone who deserves such recognition for their selfless actions. It might be your mum, your sibling, your cousin, your best friend, neighbour or school teacher.

I urge you to take a few minutes and nominate them for a Pride of Spain Award in 2019. On behalf of everyone at the Costa Blanca People, I would like to thank our readers, sponsors, political and community leaders who lend their ongoing support to the Costa Blanca People Pride of Spain Awards.” To nominate your local hero, simply go to http://www.costablancapeople.c om/pride-of-spain-awards/ and fill in the online form. If you don’t have internet access, simply call or visit our office (address on page 57) and we will do the rest for you.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT â– CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

W

ell, to be fair we've had at least a couple of weeks of proper football before they threw a dull international break in there, didn't we? I mean, imagine how the Italians must feel - one match and then the clubs take ten days off again. That's normally what it's like in the Premier League. And for what? Let's be honest Scotland, Wales and Ireland aren't going to qualify for even a massively increased Euro 2020 so what is the point of them even turning out? And England, bar that awful campaign under Shteeve McLaren, always qualify - it's the actual tournaments that kill us. You know the impact the UEFA Nations League had when I'd actually prefer to watch that tournament

than see England stick four past Bulgaria. Granted, I am being massively inconsistent here. Only 18 months ago I was moaning about how England used to stick seven past Turkey at Wembley in the last 80s and how we seem to struggle against lesser nations nowadays.

be in and around the England squad for a while to come. Declan Rice showed that even without being any good in possession he is still a serious upgrade on Eric Dier - after all, Rice is there to win the ball back and if no Bulgarian is in the England defensive midfield area who can he win it off?

Ryan Giggs

Gareth Southgate Gareth Southgate does seem to have changed that as Bulgaria were seen off with minimal effort - as Roy Keane was quick to point out at halftime. For a column that likes to mock the mockable, England were just a bit too efficient for my liking. A hattrick from Harry Kane? Of course there was, it's September and he was at Wembley. A goal from Raheem Sterling from half-a-yard? Yep, he doesn't miss those any more. We even got to see Frank Lampard's Mason Mount make his England debut and, no doubt, he'll

All in all, it was job done heading into Tuesday's top-of-the-table clash against Kosovo which is being played in Southampton - no, I don't know why either. Scotland managed to lose, as usual. They led Russia, but that wasn't on now, was it? It took a late own-goal to ensure that the Scots remain on track not to ever qualify for a major tournament again. As for the Welsh, I think we can all agree that this might be Ryan Giggs' first and last effort at management. Wales weren't very good in their 2-1 win on Friday night and Giggs already

looks lost - imagine how lost he will look when Gareth Bale gets injured again. Ireland, somehow, drew with a very good Swiss side in Dublin - this is an Ireland side managed by Mick McCarthy of the 1990s playing football as if it is the 1990s. Still, a point is a point. Watford made a peak Watford move - Javi Gracia is no more at Vicarage Road, paying the price for taking the club to an FA Cup Final last season and only having one point on the board this. Watford fans, although a little surprised and disappointed as they'd grown to like Gracia were allowed at least 30 minutes to wonder who Watford's owners had up their sleeve. Watford normally have a plan, something different - and, to be fair, it normally works. Therefore, going back to Quique Sanchez Flores is a bit of a surprise.

Still, they didn't move quick enough to bring in Diego Maradona. He was available up until Friday night but was appointed manager of Gimnasia in Argentina. Maradona in a gymnasium? I'm not convinced.

YOUR WEEK IN SPORT â– CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Well, that's that then. I mean, there was some sense in having the 4th Test in Manchester in September - if we needed rain to save us, this was the best choice of venue. But no, not even rain could save England from Steve Smith and that bowling attack.

cause one little bit. Let's be clear here - there wasn't a great deal between about eight of each side's 11 picked each time. Eight players on both sides were distinctly average in each Test match and more often than not, Australia found three more than England that were an absolute cut above. Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood made the ball talk all series and, even with the emergence of Jofra Archer, it was clear that their bowling attack was

this over and over and over again and yes, it was special to watch. But it means nothing now. Nothing. As Ben Stokes said before the game, 'it is worthless if we don't bring home the Ashes now' and we haven't. You can't knock the character England have shown throughout the series - they nearly pulled it off on Sunday night to steal an incredible draw facing that bowling attack. But character is not enough. I'm finally prepared to accept that bringing the best of the ODI side to the Test arena is not going to work unless they are able to adjust their game slightly for the demands of red-ball cricket. I, like so many others, desperately wanted to see Jason Roy do what he does at the top of the order but it hasn't happened for him. It's not just Jason Roy though - Joe Root needs to be relieved of the burden of being a terrible captain and

The Ashes The Ashes remain with Australia and deservedly so. After all, they have the greatest batsman I have ever seen play the game - whoever decided to ban him for a year cost England the Ashes. Giving Smith 12 months or so to mentally refresh, hone that crazy technique further and set goals for himself to smash did not help our

better than England's. You didn't see Australia scraping the bottom of a barrel and coming up with Lurch Overton, did you? How on earth he is anyway near a Test attack is beyond me. The 2019 Ashes has given us Headlingly, of course - but does it even count? Had Steve Smith played there is no way Ben Stokes would have had his moment. It's lovely that Sky get to play

Ben Stokes

let him bat and remember what it's like to regularly convert 50s into big hundreds. The whole side needs a revolution now - ideally timed with a new coach coming in. A direction needs to be mapped out, players selected that match it and away we go. Players that have to be retained, in my humble opinion, are Rory Burns, Root (as a player, not a captain), Stokes, Archer, Curran (remember him?) and Broad. The rest are fighting for their spots and can we please bring back Ben Foakes? Although it is always sad to see the Ashes pass us by once again, you can only doff your cap to the genius of Smith and applaud the bowling skill of Cummins. And, you can never take the World Cup away from us.

It was a fantastic day for our first competition of the new season which was sponsored by Danny and Sharon Collins from England. The day started with the traditional full English breakfast in Imanyo’s, twenty players took part and the format was full handicap Stableford playing in two groups with an overall winner. On arrival at El Plantio we received the usual friendly greeting with everything ready and waiting, the course was in its usual great condition, the tinning had been done a few weeks ago but the greens were still a bit unpredictable. The weather was blue sky, 30o but humid. Playing in group A the winner of the Collins Continental Cup, and previous winner from 2017, was the sponsor’s son Liam Collins with his new name “EL BANDINO”, he came in with an incredible 54 points, runner up in group A, same as last year, was Miguel Garcia with 34

points, group B winner was “Mr Twelve Trees”, Steve Ayre with 36 points and runner up in group B was “Keep it in the Family”, Alan Ralph with 34 points. There were six nearest the pins and a longest drive, Liam Collins won hole 3 in three shots and hole 7, Alan Martin won holes 9 and 14 and Dave Martin won hole 16 in two shots, Alan Martin also won the Longest Drive trophy on hole 11. The presentation was held at Imanyo’s. Thank you to Danny and Sharon Collins for providing and presenting all the prizes, also thank you to Antonio, Norma and staff at Imanyo’s for the fantastic food and great hospitality. for the two hours we were waiting for the outcome. Thanks to you all. That said, maybe more shotgun starts would be welcomed by the members? When the numbers had finally been crunched, it was clear that the higher handicappers found it hardest to score on a course that was playing long on most holes. Scores in each division certainly support this theory.

Big 100 for walking footballers GRAN ALACANT OLDIES WALKING FOOTBALL CLUB celebrated its 100th weekly session on Thursday 29th August MATCH FISHING REPORT We fished the 1st round of the Winter Series at the El Bosquet complex Section A on the 3rd September It seemed to be the hottest day so far this year with the Sun at its most powerful. RODS & REELS Our 3rd round of the Summer Championship was also fished at

the El Bosquet Complex but on Section B on the 4th September. Again it was another very hot day but the rain storms that had been about kept away. Neil McBirnie was brilliant once again on this venue and came in tops with an enormous weight of 57.400kgs,( well done the boy ) following him in second place was Bill Reade with 37.880kgs and just behind in third was Lennie Bolton with 37.080kgs. This match was probably the best total match weight on this venue with everyone on double figures.

The picture shows the 15 players who took part on the day, plus Barry the founder and Jonathan the club mascot. After the game, as usual, we all arrived at Bar Sioux for a well earned drink, and the bar kindly supplied some nibbles for us all. We play every Thursday, we do not stop because it is too hot, or too wet, as all games are played indoors at the Gran Alacant indoor sports hall, all

well under cover. The club started up over two years ago and weekly sessions see anything up to 20 players each week enjoying the non contact, non tackling, sessions where fitness can be improved week after week, with very little fear of getting hurt, which for the elderly players is very important. Many of our players come and go when they are here on Gran Alacant and we have Brits,

El PLANTIO GS The first hole on El Plantio 9-Hole course carries a 17 and 18 Handicap and should, logically, be the easiest hole on the course. However six players had 2 shots each and none were successful in landing on the green. Therefore, the nearest the pin prize was left unclaimed with the other one being claimed by eventual joker competition winner – Alistair Douglas, who, the previous week had achieved a Hole-in-One on the first hole. Nearest the pins – Hole 9, Alistair Douglas. Second place, Handicap 10, Graham Blakeway – 40 points. First place, Handicap 6 , Alistair Douglas – 42 points. If anyone would like to join our Society, we play at

Norwegian and Spanish players. All are welcome. We all play for fun, nothing taken too seriously, the idea is for our older players to have fun and get fit. The day after the 100thsession we had a get together at Lounged (one of our sponsors), where Joan laid on a wonderfull buffet for us all and Lou was kept busy serving drinks. Around 20 players and families took part and were also entertained in the square by live music. Lots of drinks, lots of food and lots of chat among wonderful friends who players and family have now become. A big thank you to the players, who keep turning up every week to make our club the great success that it has become.

El Plantio Golf Club every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. We use both courses - the Par 3 9 hole course and the main 18 hole course, so we cater for all abilities. The membership rates are very competitive, so call for more details. Anyone who wishes to play in the Society as a guest or join as a new member, contact David Swann on 865 779 983 or 648 476 752.
